Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hard Way with your favorite therapist and host, Kear Games.
Starting point is 00:01:10 This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor. It signals to the world that you're not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to. Listen and learn the hard way on the AHA radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of Tontons and Wampas on the ice planet, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:02:26 Here we go on a Tuesday live in Los Angeles. It's the herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, we're on IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. Greg Olson next hour, draft around the corner. Kyle Hamilton, Notre Dame Safety, later this hour, we are getting ready for the draft on Thursday, but we've got NBA hoops to talk about the playoffs. Now we're starting to see a very clear picture on who is seen. separating. It looks like Dallas now. The ceiling is much higher than a Utah. Philadelphia
Starting point is 00:03:04 still a little bit in the crosshairs of drama. Joy Taylor is joining me. But Boston, Brooklyn, is officially now. Stamp it. Joy, it is over. Sweep. That was something. Do not predict that. No, I had the nets in seven. Whenever you watch a football game and a team struggles to pick up every yard. You know they're in trouble. When you watch a basketball series and we knew by about the middle of game two, yeah, Brooklyn got no easy shots. And it was like, they're not going to, they're not going to win this series. So let's start with that. Series was over after the second game, probably midway through the second game. You have a very young coach with not a lot of coaching experience, Steve Nash, who knows his future, trying to out duel a more experienced guy in the
Starting point is 00:03:53 trenches who had been in the NBA on a bench for a long time and a deeper team a better team the boston Celtics so remember though a couple years ago kairie irving informed us that they would not need a coach really it'd be by committee if if kre wanted to coach if kd wanted to coach this was really what kiree believes he probably still believes it now after last night's loss he also believes he could be not only co-coach but co-general manager here's what he had to say I don't really plan on going anywhere. So, you know, this is, like I said, this is added motivation for our franchise to be at the top of the league for the next few years. And, you know, I'm just looking forward to the summer and just building with our guys here.
Starting point is 00:04:40 When I say I'm here with Kev, I think that it really entails us, you know, managing this franchise together alongside Joe and Sean and just our group of family members that we have. in our locker room and our in our organization. Oh boy. Us, we. No, no, no. Kyrie's that person that loves to tell you, he has all the answers. Remember, he said the world's flat. Magellan actually proved it wasn't, but if you want to sail around the world to disprove Magellan, go for it. You'll have plenty of time now. You're out in the first round. He also told us the vaccination, how it affects all of us.
Starting point is 00:05:19 I tend to lean on Ivy League in Stanford epidemiologists, but what do I know? he can coach and now he can general manager. Yeah, okay. There's types, this type of guy is all over the internet. He's almost always anonymous and he's always a loser. Tells you how much he knows about the world. Way out of his territory. His confines.
Starting point is 00:05:41 Again, I'm not a shut up and dribble guy. IMA. Be great at what you're great at. That's awesome. Bill Belichick, stop drafting. Let the scouts do it. I'll say what I said yesterday. KD has to go to the.
Starting point is 00:05:54 owner and the front office and say, get Kyrie out of here. Get him out of here. Now there's another story that the Ben Simmons saga, now it's back to being a mental health saga. Okay. First it was injuries and mental health. That was back to injuries and back soreness. Now it's mental health.
Starting point is 00:06:12 The agent and the player, wherever the wind blows. Kevin Durant, listen, Steph Klan, Dremont and Steve Kerr are laughing their butts off. They're saying, We told you not to leave. We told you it was a good thing here. And Kevin Durant struggled with that. Draymond confronted him. You remember the video.
Starting point is 00:06:33 Hey, we won before you were here. Okay, well, when you're gone? They're right. And KD's wrong. Now, careers in the NBA often end sadly. Michael Jordan at the end of the Wizards with ugly, Shaq fell apart physically. Even LeBron now.
Starting point is 00:06:48 It's kind of a mess. But Kevin Durant still averages 30 a game and shoots over 50%. It doesn't need to end this way. but he wanted to leave the warriors because he wanted to prove I can do it my way. And instead, he's proven the opposite that he does because of his personality. He needs structure. He needs a coach. He needs a reliable teammate.
Starting point is 00:07:13 He wanted to show Golden State, I'm going to do my own thing. We've seen it. It doesn't work. And that's okay. A lot of people leave corporations. they're going to start their own business. Many succeed. They become an Elon Musk, a Mark Cuban, and then many don't.
Starting point is 00:07:31 And then they come back to the corporation and make a great living and a great employees, but they're not really basically do it on your own mavericks. It's not their personality. KD needs structure. He's a wander. Emotionally, he's kind of a wander. He needs somebody to rein him in, give him structure, hard coach him. He needs teammates that are reliable.
Starting point is 00:07:53 because deep down, Kevin Durant's very reliable. He loves basketball and likes to wander, but he likes to win. He plays real defense. He's accountable and he's committed. And right now you've got two guys in Ben Simmons and Kyrie Irving that just aren't. And his career is ending sadly, but unlike MJ, he's not washed. Unlike Shaq, he's not falling apart. Even LeBron now missing a lot of games.
Starting point is 00:08:19 Kevin's a 30-point per game player in this league. He is still absolutely as good as anybody on the planet get in a bucket. And he is trapped. And what is the one thing he wouldn't do in San Francisco with the Warriors? And it's not his personality. He would not confront Draymond Green. And it blew up his career. He's not going to confront Kyrie.
Starting point is 00:08:43 It's not who he is. You got to go upstairs. You got to ask the owner. You got to ask the boss. Get him out of here. because otherwise, they're already laughing at you at Golden State. Everybody else is going to be two. The only way to turn this thing around is do what you're uncomfortable doing.
Starting point is 00:09:01 Confrontation. Otherwise, it is a sad, sad ending for a remarkably committed basketball icon. All right, so we're getting real close to the draft. And it has been a really interesting last three. or four months in the NFL. For years and years and years, there are certain positions you pay and certain positions you don't. And you don't want to overpay for any position.
Starting point is 00:09:32 But suddenly in the last couple of months, wide receivers have just started making quarterback money. You know, it's like almost, you've heard of a housing bubble. It's like a wide receiver bubble. Like we know they're valuable, but I mean, good God, the 19, 20, 30 million a year. It's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. We have housing bubble. We have market bubbles.
Starting point is 00:09:53 I do think we have a little bit of a wide receiver bubble. So the Niners have Debo Samuel and they're in a tough spot. George Kiddell is great, but he gets banged up. Brendan Ayyuk has been really inconsistent. So he's probably always going to be a two. And they don't really have a three. Now, they do run the football better than almost anybody. Their coach is really smart.
Starting point is 00:10:16 He elevates everybody. And the Debo Samuel situation was kind of tricky. So Debo, people tend to forget. get this, it's recency bias. Debo is not a dependable 12-catch a game guy. He's erratic. He has one-catch games. He has nine catch games. And so San Francisco thought, how do we make him more consistent? We'll add him into the run game. And voila, they found the secret sauce. He runs a little, he receives a little, now he's a big-time player. But he doesn't want that, right? He doesn't want to get banged up like that. And I understand it. But he's not Stefan Diggs. He's not Jamar Chase.
Starting point is 00:10:51 You don't get the same receiver every weekend. So they thought, let's add an element to his game with our great coach, Kyle Shanahan. This will now make him a wildly productive player. And he's like, okay, if we're going to do that, I want to be paid now. I want to be paid early. I want to be paid most. So now we've got a real issue. John Lynch talked about this and said, we love him.
Starting point is 00:11:09 We don't want to let go of him despite all the rumors you hear. I can't ever imagine, you know, wanting to move on from Debo. You put yourself through the exercises of, you know, even though we don't have. have a first round pick. You have to be thorough in this process and prepare for everything. And so you go through and do that. He's just too good of a player. So we've got nothing but love for him and nothing but appreciation for what he's bought. But you just don't let guys like that walk. So let's just think about this for a second. Let's just talk wide receivers broadly, holistically here. Kansas City and Green Bay. You and I, everybody would admit Kansas City and
Starting point is 00:11:45 Green Bay. These are well-run teams. They really are. They're well-run teams. They're well-run teams. They have said, we can't pay $30 million for a receiver. We can't pay. We're going to let him go. Well-run teams have said, we just can't do it. Who spent big money this offseason on wide receivers? Jags, dolphins, Raiders, and the New York Giants have the most expensive wide receiver room in the league.
Starting point is 00:12:14 Hmm. We all get receivers are important, but I'd like to repeat those teams that are spending a fortune. Jags, dolphins, giants, raiders. And I'd like to repeat the teams who are actually getting value out of receivers, seeking, you know, a little budget constraints. Green Bay, Kansas City, and the Rams. The Rams went and got Alan Robinson.
Starting point is 00:12:37 They went bargain shopping and kind of stole him. And he may only be a two, but he's a great two. So the Rams, they let Robert Woods go. They went bargain shopping. think they're a wildly effective team in the wide receiver space. They like draft them and they don't whiff on a lot of them.
Starting point is 00:12:58 So all I'm saying here is San Francisco, I understand this and I've been saying this now for three weeks. A few years ago, three teams in the NFL went big on running backs. The Panthers with McCaffrey, the jets with Lavian Bell, and the Cowboys with Ezekiel Elliott.
Starting point is 00:13:14 Any of them happy with those contracts today this morning? No, not really. Vikings did with Dalvin Cook, that one you can live with. But there's housing bubbles and there's stock market bubbles and there's tech bubbles. San Francisco's saying, we may be in the middle of a wide receiver bubble here and we like him. But let's not frame this as, you know, he is Jamar Chase as a talent or he is as dependable as a Stefan Diggs. He was a little erratic, came into a camp, not in.
Starting point is 00:13:50 great shape, one year played only six games. It wasn't until the Niners said, we're going to add him into the run game. He will be more consistently valuable. And he really was. He was very dynamic last nine, ten games of the year. But you've got to be careful here. College football is now given the NFL 25 guys who can play a year. Like a lot now.
Starting point is 00:14:09 I'm not saying there's a Jamar Chase in this draft, but there may be a lot of Michael Pittman's with the Colts. There may be 15 of those. And as the world turns, I think it's an interesting proposition. I think if Brandon Iyuk was as good as they had hoped, they'd move off him. He's not, so I don't think they can. A lot of good stuff today. Boy, the Dallas Mavericks, you've got to feel good about this.
Starting point is 00:14:33 You've got the world's worst break. Luca gets hurt. And you're thinking, oh, but in a weird way, it let everybody else kind of say, okay, our guy's gone. Can we stave off Utah for about a week for about 10 days until our Our guy comes back, and man have they? Thoughts on that coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific.

Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement

Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking.
Starting point is 00:16:43 What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:17:01 To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really?
Starting point is 00:17:24 Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and, conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Trip Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Starting point is 00:17:50 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross.
Starting point is 00:18:09 Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions. bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real
Starting point is 00:18:23 conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free, our Heart Radio app, search Learn the Hardway, and listen now. Welcome back to Mavs, route of the jazz last night. As I was watching it, beginning of the second quarter,
Starting point is 00:18:40 you not only felt like the game was over and Dallas was going to cruise, you kind of felt like the series was over. Dallas and Utah. in a weird way are both seeking the same thing, but they have two different challenges. So Dallas, due to Luca, has really no ceiling. If they get him the right components, they won two games in the series without Luca.
Starting point is 00:19:01 So their ceiling is through the roof. Utah has kind of met their ceiling, where their number one, Donovan Mitchell, many believe is a two. Rudy Gobert doesn't offer anything on the offensive end. And like the NFL, becoming a passing league, the NBA is now a Shooters League and an offensive league and there's only so much defenses can do. And they're too good for a lottery pick, but not good enough for a long playoff run.
Starting point is 00:19:24 What Utah has going for them, and this is a big thing in life, is self-awareness. They know that. That's why they brought in DeWade to change the outside perception. They know, they've made the playoffs six straight years. They're well-run. In the building, they do a lot right. I've been to their facility more than once. Well-run, smartly built.
Starting point is 00:19:43 great coach, good kids. They do a lot right. They're trying to change the perception. They're not a great free agent market, and that's why you bring DeWade in. So they have the self-awareness to know, we've got a little bit of a ceiling here. What they need is to hit a home run in the draft
Starting point is 00:19:59 in the next couple of years in Donovan Mitchell's prime. They have to go hit a home run. Good luck. Dallas has to hit a home run, too, as a number two player with Luca. So Luca's the one, and will be for the next 10 years in Dallas. Can they find it too?
Starting point is 00:20:17 They've already whiffed once on Porzingis. Spencer Dinwidies a three. Some would say a four. We'll give them a three. So they already whiffed on Porzingus. They never did get Dirk Nevitsky a two. And they tried. It's attractive market, I think.
Starting point is 00:20:30 They tried. They got really good players past their prime that kind of faked it out and won a title. But in 21 years, they only got to the conference finals three times. They could never be consistent in the postseason because it was too Dirk. dominated. And whereas your spurs and your other teams could find a two and a three. So they have totally different challenges.
Starting point is 00:20:51 One, with no ceiling, that's Dallas with Luca. And you could see it last night very early in the second quarter. You're like, all right, they've pulled away. You know, everything has to go right for Utah to get to a finals. With Luca, you can make some mistakes. You can whiff on some draft picks. Dallas will get a free agent. you can whiff on Porzinger, you still win playoff series.
Starting point is 00:21:16 That's not where Utah's at. But I will say this for the jazz. They know what they are, and they know what they're not. A lot of people and a lot of companies and a lot of organizations don't. That's why they smartly brought DeWade in. Can he solve it? Well, just because you know you have an issue doesn't mean you can solve the issue, but that's the first part of solving it, acknowledging you got a problem.
Starting point is 00:21:38 But Dallas is a fun team. They're a really interesting team. you got somebody as good as Luca who there's an argument to be made, best young player in the league, a future really bright for Mark Cuban. They just got to do what they couldn't do with Dirk. Find a Robin. Find a Hall of Fame level number two. Joy with the news.
Starting point is 00:21:59 No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Oh, the Sixers not looking so feisty the last two games. I still like him. I still like him in the series. And there's a lot of stuff going on there, but I like them. The stuff that's going on is what's worrying me, though,
Starting point is 00:22:18 because the Raptors are a good organization with a lot of talents. They're well-run, well-coached. So I could see them snicking this series out if Philadelphia keeps playing with them. They lost two straight to the Raptors, 103-88 loss in game five. Philly had a 3-0 lead. Yeah, and last night was that was the Raptors from the very beginning. Right. You watch the game.
Starting point is 00:22:40 Seven minutes in, Raptors going to win. Wasn't a game they snuck out. Yeah. They won that game. Joel N.B. doesn't seem too worried about the losses, but he does want more out of James Harden. I've been saying all season since he died here, you know, he just needs to be aggressive and he needs to be himself. You know, that's not really my job.
Starting point is 00:23:00 You know, that's probably on coach to, you know, talk to him and tell him to, you know, take more shots. By the way, let me throw this out there. What Embed wants is the old James Hardin. Right. And what he has is maybe an old James Hardin. It's possible. But also, James has been, you know, he's been doing what's been asked of him to win. We were talking about this yesterday.
Starting point is 00:23:27 Yes. But there are moments when he does have to be more aggressive. Listen, he, let's just be honest about this. He's the opposite of Tom Brady, LeBron and Russell Wilson. He partied hard. He closed a lot of clubs. and because of that, he's only 32. Joey, he's age quickly.
Starting point is 00:23:46 Like he is not as quick and elusive as he was two years ago. Like he looks, you know, some guys that, you know, we just watch this. Westbrook and Cam, you're like, they're only 32. Hardin is not as quick as he was two years ago. And he's never been like, you know, Russell Wilson, LeBron, Brady committed to the process. He's like just a gifted score. Well, he's going to have to. tap into that a little bit if they're going to make a run this year. He's had 15 points and 4 of 11
Starting point is 00:24:18 7 assists in game 5. In the playoffs, he's been averaging 18.4 points per game. He's shooting 42 from the field and 37.9 from 3. And that's the bigger issue I have. It's the field goal percentage. That tells me, doesn't quite have the legs. He doesn't quite get the lift. The shot's not quite as easy. I didn't look this morning. If you go back to in his his his primaries, and now, I would imagine the field goal percentage is much lower now. I don't have a problem with Joelle Embed saying this. No, not at all. At all.
Starting point is 00:24:50 Nor publicly, because we've been very critical of stars who are being too gentle on their teammates. I don't know how James Hardin is going to receive it or if he's already said it to James Harden, I imagine he would have if he had said it publicly. But to your point, does James still have it in him? He's going to have to take it to another level. Like they need James Harden to be aggressive. that they need the scoring. And particularly to get out of this series,
Starting point is 00:25:14 which they've dropped two now to the Raptors. And Bede is also dealing with the hand injury, so that could be playing a role in things as well. But I'm not going to lie. I'm a little nervous for the Sixers. You should be. Here, I'll say this. Now you're starting to hear the Doc Rivers narrative.
Starting point is 00:25:31 Ah, Doc can't close out a series. So I'm just interested. This will be a really good game. This will be one of the better playoff games in the first round. Philly in Toronto. It's going to be a really good game. Oh, Canada is what they're hoping for. So Nets' leadership met with Ben Simmons prior to game four yesterday
Starting point is 00:25:50 to discuss the physical and mental hurdles remaining in his return to the court. Ben Simmons reiterated his desire to play as soon as possible, but they're going to have to wait until next season, obviously, as the Nets got swept last night. Now, according to reports, Brooklyn made it clear to Ben Simmons and his agent Rich Paul that the organization, plans to continue to give him every resource necessary to return in the short and long term. He has three years and $114 million left on his contract after this season.
Starting point is 00:26:22 He hasn't played a game since game seven of the 2021 Eastern Conference semifinals against the Hawks. That was June 20th, 2021, so almost a year now. He's making $35.4 million in base salary this season. Now it's unclear how much of that he got because he has agreements with the Sixers and they were withholding his pay. So who knows how much of that he got this year. But the point is, he is being compensated well and he is not playing basketball. And it is apparent that it is still not just the back situation. The mental side of things is also affecting him not coming back.
Starting point is 00:27:00 It's exhausting. It's the, you know, Dack Prescott contract story. We're like, can we just come back when it's resolved? I feel like with this story, I'm like, I'm exhausted. I've been saying that. I just, I don't know what the, I don't know what's new. What's new? What's the development?
Starting point is 00:27:16 Nothing has changed. Well, they keep moving it. It's the shell game. It's like it was mental. We all backed off. And then it was physical. We were all hopeful. And now when he couldn't play and he got ripped by Barclay Shack and everybody,
Starting point is 00:27:26 now it's back to the mental. And it's like, I thought we got past that. So at this point, I just feel like he's being protected by an agent. I think he's been protected and coddled most of his career. I just, for me, it always comes back to this. I could not let my coworkers down like that. I could not, I could not literally say, I'm just going to be off the show for a while. And you guys are all like, when's he coming back?
Starting point is 00:27:47 And I don't know. I just, you know, right now it's upstairs. It's like, I'd have a guilt thing. I would have a, like you love the sport or you don't. You want to be there for people beyond yourself or you don't. If you have a mental health situation that you're dealing with, that's preventing you from being able to work, then I, everyone is totally fine with that.
Starting point is 00:28:08 But there's no need for the, to your point, the shell game of when he is possibly coming back. Just let us know when you're coming back. Yeah, yeah. I don't need to follow the saga all the way through. I just, I mean, I don't think he's that good of a basketball player for it to be this much drama.
Starting point is 00:28:26 Well, he's not a plug and play player. He has to be in a specific system. He's terrified to shoot. He's not good in big moments. Yes, he's an elite defensive player. he can score the ball and distribute. So can lots of guys who we don't spend this much time worrying about when they're going to be back. He hasn't played basketball in a year.
Starting point is 00:28:43 So, you know, it's interesting. We talked about Hardin and now we talk about Simmons. The truth is both franchises, even though I like what Philly did, much easier, fewer moving parts. It's, there's issues with both. Like James has peaked. Like he is, he's getting old fast. And Ben, if not peaked, we put his career on pause. Like, what is it?
Starting point is 00:29:06 So, like, the truth of the matter is, if Hardin was as good as he was three years ago, Brooklyn probably would have gotten more. So Darry did have limitations on, you know, you got two players. At least my guy Hardin is on the court. Like, I'm getting minutes. That's what I said at the beginning, as soon as the trade happened, at least I'm getting someone who plays basketball. And loves basketball. I think he loves basketball. James, he loves.
Starting point is 00:29:29 Right, but he's literally a human body on the floor. Like, Ben Simmons is not playing basketball. We're not talking about a multiple time MVP, multiple championships type of player. Yeah. Does he even impact your organization in a winning way? What does he ever won? It's all fair. I've been done with the saga, but then they brought it back for game four, so here we are again.
Starting point is 00:29:55 Just whenever he's ready to come back, let us know, and then we can start discussing how he's going to impact any team that he's on. So Jay Wright retired a week ago after 21 seasons at Villanova. The two-time national champion coach said he didn't want to ask his players to commit 100% when he wasn't fully committed. So this morning, he was asked about the possibility of coming out of retirement to coach in the NBA. And this is what he said. Not right now. That was something, you know, I always thought about my experience with the Olympics, it kind of scratched that itch. I kind of feel like I did it, you know, a little bit.
Starting point is 00:30:32 And I love coaching those guys. Right now, I definitely need a break. Right now I'm looking forward to this position at Villanova. But I don't feel like down the road, I don't know what I'm going to feel like. It's a little crack in the door. But also, can't all of us answer questions like this? The media tends to want a definitive answer. And he's like, listen, man, I can't wait for the Villanova thing.
Starting point is 00:30:53 But who does know what they're going to think in two years? I prefer this type of answer rather than an absolute answer, definitive answer. I don't like speaking in absolutes. He's right. What if in two years he's miserably bored? And he's like, nope, I still have some left in the tank, and I've spent some time with my family.
Starting point is 00:31:12 We vacationed, and we all think it's best that I go back to work for a few more years. After the third trip to Aruba, he's like, all right, I've done it. I want to get back to the grind. I can deal with the Northeast winters. I'm into it. I mean, it happens all the time. All the time. All the time.
Starting point is 00:31:26 very protective over the fact that you said you were retired. So I don't mind that he left the door open now. It is going to continuously put his name in the hat for any big job that comes up. So that is something that you have to deal with and is why some people answer these questions and absolute answers. So they don't have to deal with that. But, you know, this coach cycle, the Lakers, Kings and Hornets are looking for coaches already. We imagine there will be some other positions open.
Starting point is 00:31:53 And I do think he's going to, in kind of the same way that Sean Payton is taking is retired, I think it might be a little bit of a short retirement. Now, Jay, I think, might actually stay retired and might enjoy this new position. Because it's not, it's a new thing to kind of be semi-retired. Like, I'm retired, but I'm still, you know, I still have an office. Yes. I'm still dabbling. I still have a bit of a routine.
Starting point is 00:32:17 Sure. But I'm not going to have to be here every day and travel. Like, you know, you kind of ease back a little bit. So I wouldn't be surprised if we saw Jay Wright coach in the NBA, but I do think that unlike Sean Payton, this is like a very sincere retirement. Good stuff, Joy with the News. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 00:32:35 The Hurd-Ly News. So I saw a story yesterday, and a lot of stuff that comes out, I just don't report on the show, if I don't believe it. I don't believe this, but I will acknowledge it because the star player is so great, and there's been a reaction to it. Darren Waller's probably the second best tight end talent after Travis Kelsey in the NFL. There's a story that Packers are interested in trading for Darren Waller. It comes from Cheesehead TV.
Starting point is 00:33:02 All right. You can kind of figure out what direction that blog is interested in. Why would the Raiders trade him? He's only a $7 million cap head. Why would you let him go? The new Raider coach, Josh McDaniels, knows the value of tight ends. He had Grunk and Aaron Hernandez. this. So yeah, I think Green Bay would like to have Darren Waller, who wouldn't? But this is a classic. Why would
Starting point is 00:33:26 you leak this to a team-friendly blog? Because you can right before the draft tell Aaron Rogers and their fans, look at how hard we're working. We are uncovering every rock to find the next great player. If it really is this close, then why would it leak? We would just find out when it was done if it's this close. For the record, Derek Carr made fun of this move today. Jeff Howe at the athletic, poohed it and said, you know, they wanted Darren Waller in the Devante Adams thing, and the Raiders wouldn't give it up. Listen, Green Bay is in a very clear space. They're in a fingers crossing mode heading into the draft. They need to get one of these top receivers.
Starting point is 00:34:05 They have two picks in the first round. I'd move both to move up and get one if I really like the wide receiver. But right now they have old Sammy Watkins, older Randall Kopp, young kid, Unproven Amari Rogers, and Alan Lazard. That's not good enough. they're just not good enough. I mean, one of those guys will get banged up because it's the NFL and you always lose a receiver, right? So this feels like kind of a one-sided report from a, you know, team, more team friendly, somebody with connections in the team. But, you know, teams know who to leak stuff to.
Starting point is 00:34:36 They do. And they know, you know, who's our ally, who's our enemy. But I, you know, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it happens tomorrow. I'm paid to give strong opinions. I'm wrong often. But I, the idea of the raider. would let Darren Waller go in a division now with Russell Wilson and all sorts of weapons,
Starting point is 00:34:55 Kansas City, Andy Reid-Moholmes, and all sorts of weapons, they'd let go of maybe their best weapon. I mean, Devante Adams is on the perimeter, but Darren Waller is a, the Raiders may never get a tie-end this good for 15 years, 20 years. Like, he's just not a guy that I would let go unless he was a wild cap hit, 7 million not, or he was all beat up end of his career, not. Makes no sense to me. But it makes sense for Green Bay to get it out there. That part I totally get, which is, hey, we are this close. I mean, we are knocking at the door of getting the second best tied in.
Starting point is 00:35:32 I get that. Teams know who to give information to and when it will get out and who's an ally and who's an enemy. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, it's me, Rob Parker. Starting point is 00:36:14 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Starting point is 00:36:38 Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Starting point is 00:37:51 Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:38:14 To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:38:36 Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Pie. or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Keer Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience
Starting point is 00:38:57 in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses.
Starting point is 00:39:20 Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.
Starting point is 00:39:34 Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free. iHeartRadio app search learn the hard way and listen now all right great to have you back in the draft starts thursday one of the players that will be picked in that first round is kyle hamilton a multiple time uh all-american at notre dame three years there still very young the kind of safety that can
Starting point is 00:40:01 cover he's got great range he's got great size he's also got an amazing podcast called inside the garage and i hired him at one point okay i said it right there i gave i gave myself a little love all right so he's a great kid and he's an unbelievable talent and right now you're in Vegas in a golf cart because the draft's going to be in Vegas. Are you, Kyle, how are you anxious? How do you feel this morning? A little anxious, a little nervous, excited, obviously. I feel like throughout the process, I've kind of just taken a step back and gotten
Starting point is 00:40:29 the opportunity to just assess everything and say I'm most likely knock on wood, going to be a first round draft pick. So it's the dream no matter where I go. So it's fun at the end of the day. What kind of NFL player do you envision yourself being? I would say somebody who's a great locker room guy, good communicator, also produce. I feel like I can be a cornerstone of an organization for however long they'll have me. And I'm just excited to prove all that.
Starting point is 00:40:55 So I feel like sky's the limit. You know, the game is changing, and it's a wide receiver league now more than ever. In your career, I think at Notre Dame, you only gave up one touchdown in like 1,400 snaps. You know, for the people that say, well, it's a safety. What are I going to bet? What would you say to the critics of the position? Yeah, I mean, I think the game's changing. Obviously, guys like Derwin, first of all guys are more needed and more look for,
Starting point is 00:41:27 and I feel like I fit that mold. I mean, at one point, everybody's one of the triple options, so football's got to change. I feel like this is just part of it. So maybe I'll be another guy to add to that in 10 years from now, who knows, maybe there's another six-four safety, and they can just look back to me and won't have any questions. You know, it's interesting. You're leaving college football in a very chaotic time
Starting point is 00:41:51 between Transfer Portal and the NIL. And you're a very heady kid. Let's talk transfer portal. So I see guys leaving all the time. And my concern is, and it's not a huge concern because I would be more concerned if players couldn't transfer. Like sometimes it's a bad fit. But do you worry at all that players now will just like,
Starting point is 00:42:12 move anytime there's an obstacle, anytime they don't start. Do you think that's an issue potentially with the transfer portal? Yeah, I think it definitely is, and it kind of it sucks because there's that added aspect of like working through stuff like that that goes to
Starting point is 00:42:28 college football and there's so many instances where guys don't play. So maybe they're third year and they have a great year and they do great things. But I mean, every situation is not the same. Some are validated. Some are kind of shooting the gun early, but transfer portal is kind of becoming somewhat of a free agency now.
Starting point is 00:42:45 Yeah. Now the NIL, again, I'm for paying players. There's no real guardrails right now. Here's my concern about the NIL. Is that a kid, if somebody just outbids him, he may not go to a good fit or a good coach. But if a booster steps up and says, here, I'll pay a million bucks to be a linebacker,
Starting point is 00:43:03 and he doesn't fit the scheme, it's not like a well-run. It's just a big booster in the South has the money. I worry about kids will be seduced just for the biggest check. Am I overstating that, or do you think kids understand that fit is often better than just a check? Like I said, I mean, every situation is different. I'm sure some guys understand that and some guys value other stuff past the money.
Starting point is 00:43:28 But at the same time, and this is more of a basketball thing, but what I'm worried about is schools like Belmont or Davidson, schools that have good basketball programs and are consistent year-to-year, but may not have the money to recruit or, compete with other people, it would kind of weed them out in a way. And then it'll be a very top-heavy sport and just league in general. So I'm kind of worried about that, how the younger or maybe less endowed schools will compete with the bigger name schools. By the way, your dad, Derek Hamilton was drafted in the NBA, the Nets, if I recall. So he was a heck of an athlete. You got some lineage there.
Starting point is 00:44:04 You know, at Notre Dame, I've always kind of held it to do a higher standard. Is there not bitterness, but do you look at it and think, man, oh man, I would have liked to have been paid at Notre Dame. Those practices were hard with Brian Kelly. How do you look at it now that you just miss the NIL? I mean, we got a little bit of it. Obviously, it was still very brand new, but I mean, definitely bittersweet, but at the same time, I feel like it'd be a little weird and it makes getting to the next level. Not that it's any less important, but maybe less significant if you're making millions in college and go to the NFL where you might be making less. It's kind of a crazy world we're living in now, but I mean, it's a new norm.
Starting point is 00:44:46 And I'm all for it. I mean, it's great to see kids make money for themselves, their families, their loved ones, and I have an opportunity to provide and had a young age. And I have an opportunity to figure out and manage money and financial planning and all that stuff. Kyle Hamilton, Notre Dame safety is going to be probably a top 10, top 12, top 15 pick. a lot of times in the draft, you know, you do these interviews. And, you know, teams sometimes blow smoke sometimes. Did you come out of that process and think, I think they kind of like me.
Starting point is 00:45:19 I think that is there a team or two that you, I mean, I think if I was being drafted, I would absolutely be looking at the teams and thinking, man, I fit there. They could use a safety. Is there a team or two that you kind of been looking at? Yeah, I mean, hopefully all of them see me as, that somewhere where I'd fit with them. But at the same time, it's kind of weird because I know as much as you do in terms of where
Starting point is 00:45:45 I'm going to get drafted, who's going to draft me, who likes me? Because this whole process is really just a smokescreen. And it's, there's all these rumors and all these Twitter GMs that it's kind of a hectic process, but I have no clue at this point. Yeah. By the way, he just signed a nutrition partnership with Herbalife Nutrition. So you're all dialed in on that. Tell me about that.
Starting point is 00:46:10 Yeah, so I was training out at Proactive, which is a training facility north of L.A., near Calabasas. So they partnered with Herbalab Nutrition, which is a big nutrition company, to build this facility. It was top of the line. It was awesome. They had everything for us from drinks to food to chef, like all this other stuff nutritionally. And it kind of prepared us a little bit for the next level, like guys like Vaughn Miller, Aaron Rogers. all of them were training there at the same time. So for us to be in the same treatment as them, it was pretty cool.
Starting point is 00:46:41 By the way, is this your phone you're on right now? Because this is the clearest signal, Joy, I have ever seen on a phone. Is it really? Oh, my God. Seriously. I can see you more clearly than I can see my producer who's 20 feet away. So whatever phone you're using, stick with it. Sign up for a longer plan, buddy.
Starting point is 00:46:58 This is not my phone, but it is. But, yeah, it's working so far. Kyle Hamilton, Notre Dame. Good luck. talk soon. Thank you, Colin. I appreciate you. You bet.
Starting point is 00:47:09 I had actually two teams in the NFL call me because he was on my podcast, and they saw that I did a podcast with Kyle and his friends at my house. Two teams called me and said, what's he like? And it was very funny. Doing their due diligence. Yeah, so one, both are in the AFC. Yeah. One, I can't give up. So they're both in the AFC.
Starting point is 00:47:32 One. No, that's enough. One is a really good team and one is, rebuilding team. Okay. And I gave them, I, Joy, I was very much the scout. In fact, the one team came back to me and sent a text. I kept it.
Starting point is 00:47:47 I framed it. It's at the house laminated. They were like, you know, you could probably be a scout. And I was like, yeah. Yeah, I could. Sure. Absolutely. Not really.
Starting point is 00:47:54 Well, you and I were talking about this morning. Actually, the real podcast we should do is in the makeup room. It's not the end between the breaks. That's where we get our best takes is while we're getting our hair and making them. In the makeup room. Yeah. It'd be a great podcast. Just 20,
Starting point is 00:48:06 minutes of talking about the industry and crazy people. Yes, we talk a lot about crazy people. By the way, yesterday, Elon Musk bought Twitter. Oh my word, the democracy is in peril. People went crazy. People went, yes. There has been a reaction to that move. I have no idea. I was just getting comfortable with Trump not being on Twitter. I don't know if he's coming back, but I'm okay. Listen, the only thing worse than overspending for a company, and it feels like he did, is people telling people how they should spend their money. If Elon Musk is worth
Starting point is 00:48:38 a zillion dollars wants to spend it by on Twitter, hey, it's your money. I'm not going to tell you how to spend your money. I wouldn't spend $44 billion to buy Twitter, but you know, who am I?
Starting point is 00:48:47 I mean, I feel like there's other problems in the world that could have been solved with $44 billion, but it's not my $44 billion. So to your point, I'm not going to tell them how to spend it. But boy, people were,
Starting point is 00:48:57 the democracies in trouble. Well, you know, free speech is very important. Oh, free speech. I just, I just, I got to be honest with you. Only 23% of America is on Twitter and 6% use it. And 2% know what free speech actually means. None of them were on Twitter yesterday.
Starting point is 00:49:15 1800flowers.com right now. Go to 1800flowers.com. The code has heard, H-E-R-D, offering $25 off two dozen assorted roses, multiple colors, absolutely beautiful. Mother's Day is coming up. Yeah, $44 billion for Twitter. Who knew? Seriously. I
