JMAX, sometimes you wake up in the morning and you're groggy. Other times you wake up in the morning and you get a warm. You get an Adrian Morgianowski bomb, which is Dan Hurley and the Lakers. Our escalating discussions, arguably the best college basketball coach, a grinder, an East Coast guy, a tough guy, a fighter. Out the law, lawn land. What are we to make of that? Bob, we should pump the brakes a little, but this is great news. JJ Reddick, no pressure during the broadcast tonight.

All right, so the Lakers, according to Woj, I know Woz, I know Woz, I. I owe is trust woge, preparing massive offer to Yukon's Dan Hurley, who is a regular on our show. My immediate thought, as I wake up, do Whartle, watch a few news updates, see my woge bomb. My initial thought is, I don't think it's a bad idea, but Dan Hurley and LeBron, what does that mean for LeBron? My second thought is Jeannie Bus, who owns the Lakers and Rob Polenka, who runs them. they've got to be looking at these playoffs going the best player in the world is yokic he's young he's out west the second best player's luka he's he's out west he's young and then aunt edwards and okay c and we got old lebron and brittle a d and a bunch of men forget the celtics two best players are in their

prime go look at the finals look at the final four teams look at the west you're looking at ruy and reeves and brittal ad and lebron San Antonio and Houston by next year could be really interesting. The West is packed all young stars. Lakers don't have one. How do you get one? Well, you draft them and develop them. So LeBron's a free agent.

He'll probably opt out. But woe's this morning talking about this, even mentioned Bronny James being drafted to the Lakers. So it might take his brawny's been given a bit of a heads up. We'll get into more of that later. but if you're going to hire Dan Hurley, remember, he's like Brad Stevens, who the Celtics hired. He's a slow builder, a culture guy. He's not a microwave guy.

That's what LeBron and A.D. want. They want to be good now. He's a let it-bake guy. He did not, he had a losing record, all three jobs first year. Wagner losing record. Rhode Island, he was 8 and 20 first year. Yukon he had a losing record. He didn't win a March Madness game until like year five at Yukon. He is a slow build guy.

Hard coach develops talent, create to culture. LeBron wants to win now. AD wants to win now. Lakers, they want to win now. This is a team guy. This is not a microwave guy. I think it would be a great move. You start looking around.

This idea that you used to be able to, you know, have three stars in a team, but they call it the apron, the second apron, the new CBA. It's very, very hard. You're never going to see Golden State again, Draymond Clay. staff KD. NBA is trying to get away from that. They don't want that anymore. So that's why a lot of these good teams, it's a slow build. You can add a B player, you can add a porzengis, you can add, but it's a slow build. That's what the league wants. Players staying in their city, draft, develop. So Brad Stevens, year one with a Celtics,

and again, that's my comp, although obviously Yukon's a much better program than Butler, but year one Brad Stevens was 25 and 57. It took him four years to win the playoff series in the Cruddy East. I mean, so if you want to use that as a comp, are you okay? Are you comfortable as a Laker fan with that? I don't think the Lakers are comfortable. I think it'd be great. But I'm, you know, I'm looking right now at that Laker roster.

The Lakers history, I've been watching this, you've been watching this. It's very impatient. New York, L.A., Chicago. These owners don't want to be in fourth place very long. You've got NFL teams, red hot major league baseball teams, increasingly popular soccer teams. People are distracted in Los Angeles. Are you ready for slow cooking?

You know, are you ready to put it on the old barbecue pit for about six hours, eight hours? Lakers ready for that? I don't think they are. Dan Hurley was on our show after we wanted Natty not long ago, and I asked him, what am I to make of all these Dan Hurley to the NBA rumors? It's certainly flattering, but I've got a long career of turning down jobs or more money to stay in places that I was happy and that fit me and that, you know, provide me the resources to at that level achieve the things you want to achieve, you know, the opportunity to go for,

shared for a three Pete right now is the only thing that is obviously on anyone's mind here. All right, so then we pivot to this. And I have so many thoughts on why Dan Hurley to the Lakers would be great, but I don't think the Lakers are built for it.

I think Hurley's built for it. It's like I say about the WNBA and the media. WNBA, those women are built for it. The media can't figure out how to handle it. I think the Lakers couldn't handle it. I think Hurley'd be fine. J.J. Reddick. So what do we make a J.J. Reddick?

I was just told a week ago he was building a staff. So did he tell the Lakers? No, thanks. I mean, let's be honest. J.J. Reddick, a podcaster currently with LeBron, becoming LeBron's coach, is like a Saturday night live skit. It's weird. Does he break down Laker losses?

I mean, how does that thing work? It can't possibly work. the players it would it would could be a subversive move you'd have players that like come on podcast so uh and they just started that business and lebron likes his podcast business did did j j reddick leaked the story did the lakers i mean did honestly did the agent for somebody leak the story so lakers maybe leak it so they get a better deal with j j reddick jrick wants 10 lakers want to play him six so they leaked the dan hurley story to get j j jrudec to settle down and take a lower contract. I mean, there's so many, so many things don't make any sense here. But this, I've said this for years. Stuff gets out when people want it out. And remember,

JJ Redick was a week ago compiling a staff. The woe story, language matters. They're just targeting Dan Hurley. They've had preliminary contact, not interviews. they've just had preliminary contact with Hurley and the sides are planning to escalate discussions. That means they called his agent. And his agent called Dan Hurley and said, would Dan Hurley be willing to discuss this? That's what it sounds like to me.

I'm reading this thing. This is, my agent calls me and says, hey, they may call you tomorrow. Would you take the call? Yeah, sure. That's what it sounds like. So this got out because somebody wanted it out. Did the Lakers want it out?

Because J.J. Reddick starts driving up the price. Because J.J. Reddick knows the job is his and starts demanding stuff. The Lakers aren't comfortable. So they leak it to bring J.J. Reddick's offer to a more realistic place. There is a – by the way, I want to play a bite. This is Gino Oriama, who was at an event. He's the Yukon Women's Basketball legendary coach. He was at an event with Dan Hurley last night.

This was on the Dan Patrick show this morning. I happened to be at a thing with him last night. And I have no idea what's going on. You know, I have no idea where this is going and what's happening. But I said, just leaned over. And I said, hey, I think you can win a lot of championships with the Lakers, you know, more so than a guy who's never coached. And he just looked at me and, you know, nodded and we had a good laugh.

and then this morning I wake up and wall-la. So I don't know what's going on. And it'd be a bad day for Yukon for sure if this happens. And it would be a great, great day for Dan Hurley. For the record, Yukon is stacked again. So you want to bring in Dan Hurley with the Lakers history of impatience and the revolving door of coaches, it's going to be a price. I don't have a problem with Dan Hurley or JJ Reddick.

Hurley's obviously already established as one of America's best basketball minds and coaches. He has proven he's a culture builder. JJ Reddick spent more time around the pro game. But I still contend if you look at what Hurley does, in NBA circles, Hurley is very respected. This isn't like years ago, remember the late Jerry Tarkinian got a job? Like a guy's like Tark or Bobby Knight, the late legendary coaches. were college coaches. They didn't feel like NBA guys. Billy Donovan at Florida felt like an NBA guy while he coached college and has done well in the NBA. Hurley feels like he could do both.

Mike Shishchevsky coached at the Olympics feels like he could do both. Mark Few, by the way, very good offensive coach, not a yeller and a screamer. Mark fuse at Gonzaga. He feels like if he wanted to, he could do some NBA stuff. Some guys feel like they fit. Dan Hurley feels like he fits. but for the record, if he stays at Yukon, they will be one of the top two or three teams with a great chance to three Pete. So it's not like he's just leaving a college job. It's like leaving Kansas if you're Bill Self.

Like this is the Northeast College job. In an area of the country that still loves and embraces college basketball, Yukon is the gig. So this is not just, yeah, let me sleep on it. Now, you got your wife's from Jersey. You have the best college job in a loaded northeast, passionate part of the country that still loves the sport. But, J. Mack, I will say, sometimes I wake up, and I'm like, wow, that's a big story.

It feels like a big story, but I got to ask you a question, Colin. When Woj writes, Palinka and Jeannie Bus are eager to formally discuss their vision with Hurley. They haven't even spoken yet. Who does that? Who does that? Who says, we are announcing that we are going after this coach. Why would you do that? Why would you put that out there so the whole league knows college basketball on the day of the NBA finals? What's really behind this announcement?

Is it a smart move to, hey, let's talk to him, let's get close, and then if it leaks, it leaks. Who leaks before you? Or to drive a better bargain for JJ Reddick. Maybe they're getting down to the end on the negotiations, and they're really struggling. and his agent are asking for things, and they're like, no, let's pump the brakes. You've never coached. We're going to make sure this story's out to know that this isn't your job yet.

And we also have to pay Darwin Ham because we just fired way early in his contract. So that's a great point. Maybe that negotiations with Reddick are not going as smoothly as everyone thinks. It gets a little turbulent toward the end. You get down to real money and buyout clauses.

And Reddick's like, what, I'm going to be here for two years, then you're going to fire me? Yeah, so you do it everybody else. So your best guess is probably it's still Reddick. My guess this morning is Reddick is in the league. I've been doing this 30 years. Stuff only gets out when people want it out. That is it. Tom Brady went to Tampa.

We knew five minutes before. Tom didn't want it out. I mean, think how big that story was. Think how big that if Mahomes in five years was leaving, all the speculation, and then we found out five minutes before. That's because Patrick Mahomes and his family don't want it out. Somebody wants this story out. My guess is the Lakers to drive down JJ's price.

That is my guess. That makes the most sense. But I'll tell you another thing. And I really thought about this this morning. This is my favorite part of this is kind of looking ahead and why I don't think it works for the Lakers. And I'll, and I'll, this. This, L.A. plays a part in this and I'll discuss it. coach, culture, development. That's what he does. That's what the NBA's becoming now. So there's a term used in business, and my best bosses ever have been good at this called seeing around corners. Can you see problems three or four or five years down the road before they happen? So when it comes to Hurley and the Lakers, two things to remember. There was not an NFL team in Los Angeles for over 20 years,

and during that time, the Lakers won titles. The Dodgers were big but weren't winning World Series titles where the Lakers were. It's a Laker town. It's one of the only cities in America, big ones, that's an NBA town, first, second, and third. And they're used to it. The bus family is used to dominating the media, being the cool team in town. Second thing is that has created something within the Lakers that they're not comfortable not being in the news.

They will not stand being the fourth and fifth story. So now from that, I want you to think about what is very possible very quickly in Los Angeles if you hired Dan Hurley and started mostly a rebuild. Jim Harbaugh and Sean McVeigh are two of the top four to five coaches in the sport and both have star quarterbacks. The NFL eats every other sport in its way alive, even in Los Angeles over time. They've got the coolest stadium in the league, Super Bowls here, Jim Harbaugh, Herbert, Stafford McVeigh, and Stan Cronkey, the second richest owner in the sport. They'll buy stars. Again, the NFL is more beloved, even in Los Angeles. than the NBA over time.

Oh, what about the Dodgers? Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman. No salary cap. They are the Yankees of 10 years ago. Otani now is stealing the thunder in the city, and he's not even pitching yet. He's just de-hing. What if the Dodgers start repeatedly getting into the World Series, winning occasionally, but getting to them? Oh, and then there's Steve Balmer, Clippers owner.

much richer than the bus family, building a new arena. It'll be the sphere for basketball just down the road from the Staples. He drafts or recruits a star or two. Kauai eventually leaves. A more magnetic dynamic star runs the organization with Ty Lou. Oh, and then there's USC entering the Big Ten, where they'll now have home games regularly with Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin. not to mention two West Coast powers, Oregon and Washington.

The Coliseum should be buzzing for years to come. You think the Lakers are going to be okay being 38 and 44 in year two of the rebuild with Dan Hurley? In Stores, Connecticut, I lived there for a decade. People will be more patient. They root for snow. This is Los Angeles. It's not Cincinnati. There's a lot to do.

beaches, mountains, Vegas a quick flight away. This city has been nothing but successful in sports since I arrived eight years ago. And we're just moving into the prime years. Otani now a Dodger. Harbaugh and Herbert for the next five.

Steve Balmer finally getting his arena and eventually out of that ugly Kauai contract. We're just starting now. USC games, no longer Washington State and Oregon State. It's Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan. The city's about to explode with sports. And you want to rebuild? I'm not buying it.

If I was Dan Hurley, my wife's a Jersey girl, best college program, I'd ask for $12 million a year. I mean, my wife moving out of Jersey, that's worth three. The job itself is worth four and a half. Connecticut to L.A. house prices, that's another $3 million annually. Do the Lakers have the stomach to finally pay massive money for a coach and rebuild at the same time? Two levels of discomfort for this organization.

But just know, we are on the precipice of this city exploding. Otani pitching and hitting. Dodger stack. Now you don't have those. regional TV network so the middle and the bottom of major league baseball now it's like triple a baseball it's not even in sometimes some areas competitive the minute somebody like a pirate's pitcher is good he'll be on another team very quickly so just are you ready for that you're ready for the slow slow cook the slow build as the rest of the city is exploding in sports

i don't think they are j mac with the news This is the herd line news. All right, let's start with quarterback drama in Dallas. Your guy, Dak Prescott, boy, he is really angling for that long-term deal. Despite the lack of job security, it has not stopped Dak from his preparation leading him to OTAs. Listen to Mike McCarthy, really gas up his QB. I think Dak's having his best off-season program that we've had, and he hasn't, you know, he's had really good off-season programs. whole time. So I think, you know, this atmosphere that we practice in, you know, the receivers and the

quarterback have really hit the mark. You know, I'm very impressed with the quality of work, because they're really the other, most of the other positions really can't go full speed in most of the things that they do. So, but I think the offensive perimeter group and the quarterbacks have really excelled through this offseason program. I think we definitely have taken a step. Yeah, C.D. Lam's not there. What do I care? What do you mean? So, Dax's working with a bunch of B, C, receivers.

That will won't get on the field during the games. Well, somebody's going to have to catch passes if your boy Ceeley Lamb keeps holding it out. I mean, come on. Listen, man, I do enjoy these discussions, and it seems like, based on social media, the fans like it when we go back and forth over this. I just don't understand why you wouldn't want to just get this done deal with Dack first. Then worry about Parsons and or Lamb, each of who have more trade value than Dax. right? I think we would agree.

I don't think that's necessarily true. I just think they're elite players who you drafted. Dack's not an elite quarterback. He's a good quarterback who you picked up for fourth round. You kind of stole him, didn't pay him a nickel for four years. It's a different valuation with him. He has made you a lot of money, but he hasn't made you elite. That's exactly what, that's what Dack has done.

He's made you relevant and a lot of money. if you're Jerry Jones. Wait, wait, wait, wait. He hasn't made you an elite team. What do you mean? What's elite? Eleven wins, three years in a row, that's not elite? This isn't baseball.

It's not about history. It's not basketball, about style. It's about January and February winning. That's why Buffalo is considered disappointing and wins 10, 12 games a year. This is not baseball, where we talk about a guy hit 3.30 and won a gold glove and doesn't make the playoffs.

Mike Trout's a legend. Never won a playoff series. Well, wait a minute. Let's stick to football. But so they haven't had the postseason success. Yeah. So you've got like eight years worth of data that he's a really good quarterback, a top 10, top 12 quarterback. Over eight years. And you want to boil it down to like one or two games in the postseason?

Yeah, yes, I do. You guys are all doing that with Lamar Jackson, and he hasn't been around half as long. Well, wait, Lamar got paid. He got paid a lot. He's a lot better quarterback. He's a lot. He won 70% of his games in a better division and a better conference. He has won a couple MVP awards, too.

And he's come up short. Yeah, but he's a much better quarterback. Great. Well, fine. He gets more money than Dak Prescott. That's right. Fine. Go ahead.

He got over 50. He hasn't. That's what's discouraging. So let's say Dak goes in there to Jones and is like, hey, you know what? I see, I see Kyler Marie got 46 million a year. I've got more playoff wins in him. I got more playoff appearances. Just give me 46.

You see the world differently than I do. If I ran a movie studio, give me a great movie or nothing. Great movie or you're fired. Write Better Movies. We're in a great or nothing era. I'm not interested in 11 wins and out in the first round getting baked by Green Bay at home. I want great. Lamar is great.

Now, no, you can only have one person win the Super Bowl. Only one person wins the Masters every year. When Tiger was in his day, nobody else was winning it, right? Like, so we understand that. Oppenheimer and Barbie, great movies. Mission Impossible Cruise, movie star. The rest of it can't fill a theater. I'm not interested in good.

I want great. Well, if you're not interested in good, then why do you like that? like Kyler Murray because he's below good. I mean, you guys got a career losing record. He's got one playoff loss which he quit in the fourth quarter. I'm not paying him 58 large year. No, no, he got 46 mil. So why can't Dak get 46, 47 mil? Because he's not as good as Kyler Murray. Oh my gosh. My God. Kyler Murray's a better talent. Whoa. Oh my goodness. So you just, hey Dallas, Jerry, dump Dak, try to find great. Yeah. And then you'll probably, you know, die in the next 15 years and you won't get

another playoff win because you lost Dak. Let's move off good and go get great. Let's go get a great quarterback. If it were that easy, wouldn't everybody just be like, let me go grab some great? Aaron Rogers, Green Bay said bye-bye. They did it. They did it. They had a plan. They had a draft cousins.

By the way, Kansas City did it with a very good Alex Smith. Lots of teams do it. Kansas City did it. Super Bowls. Green Bay did it, playoffs. This would have been helpful. By the way, Detroit did it, got Goff, and who's not considered great, and they're winning more. They did turn it around.

After God's first couple years were not great to Detroit. This fear-based DAC stuff is nonsense. He's good. Congratulations. Here's a ribbon. I'm not interested. So is Jared Gough is great now? No, I said he's not great.

And it's worked out for them. They moved off Stafford. Well, that's the thing. Goff just got his new deal. If I can move off Stafford and Aaron, I can move off back. Sorry. The confidence. Woo!

Next up, Kevin O'Connell yesterday with the Vikings. Remember that soundbite yesterday? Hey, we never, ever consider trading Justin Jefferson. Remember, we were like, wow, that's strong. Well, according to Adam Schaefter, the Jets, Colts, N-49ers reached out to the Vikings in attempt to trade for Justin Jefferson. I think Colts would have been a perfect fit. The Niners could have given them Brandon. Niners could have given you stuff back, which would have been interesting.

Well, so what are we to make of this? Is Kevin O'Connell lying? No. Or is Adam Schaefter wrong? No. Teams call. It's not my fault of other networks called me. It doesn't mean I call them.

If somebody calls Minnesota, I'd call Minnesota. If I was the 49ers and say, hey, we'll take Justin Jefferson, we'll give you Debo, you know, and something, you know, and something else. Like, there's no, nothing wrong with picking the phone up if people call. That's a big difference for me getting on the phone and calling and inquiring. Of course people call on Justin Jefferson. Of course they did. He's the best receiver in the sport.

Of course people call the Raiders on Max Crosby. Of course they do. So why would you say we never consider trading them when you're engaged in discussions with the Jets, Colts, and Niners? People call me all the time. I don't engage in discussions. I take the call. I said, by the way, if somebody called, let's say I'm the GM for the Vikings. Somebody called and said, could we get Justin Jefferson?

I'd say, what are you going to give me? And if you're like four first rounds. What do you want? I'd say, well, what are you thinking about? I'll take the call. Right. So is that not engaging? in discussions? That's just spitballing ideas. People call me and invite me to big flashy parties.

Well, who's going to the party? Lady Gaga, not interested. I can take the call. How about this, though? The 49ers don't want to pay Ayyuk yet. But they pay Justin. They were willing to pay. Yes. Yeah, I think that's reasonable. Say, I get it. That's a different story. Justin Jefferson and Ayuk. That's different. Ayuk is in that top six class. Is he not? Absolutely, but he's not the best receiver in the game. That's different. Randy Moss, there are a lot of guys that were second, third, fourth, fifth. There was one Randy Moss. So a big discussion. I mean, Michael Jordan was one thing. Barkley was great. There's a gap there. Gap in commitment, gap in titles. Magic and Bird, who was the third best player. So to me, there's a big gap between Luca and Tatum. Yeah. And one's

the first or second best player, the other's six. And you know what Iyuk would say? That's great. You love Justin Jefferson and think he's the highest paid. Go look at the playoff career stats. Tell me how they are. Get back to me, buddy. Final story to the NBA game, one of the finals tonight. Finally. Goodness, it feels like it's been forever.

Celtics are favored as they're chasing an NBA record. 18th title. Tatum, my guy, Jason Tatum, is the player under the most pressure in the series. And I love this candor when asked about pressure in the playoffs. I want to hear this. We want to be one of the greats to put on this uniform. You know, every grade before you won a championship. And that's what we try to play for every single season.

The expectations are obviously different here. I don't think about the future or what this may mean for me down the road. Just as simple as it sounds, just trying to stay present, stand the moment, enjoy it, right? Keep talking about pressure, pressure, pressure. It's the NBA finals. I like that. Very good game tonight. I'll be watching.

Very interesting. I'm going to take Boston. Boston 112.106. 112.106. Landing on the spread. I like that. You know, I just was looking this up. So Tatum has 108 career playoff games already.

Staggering number. For his age... He's 26. That's incredible. So then I looked up career playoff points. This is unbelievable. He's already... 43rd in the history of the NBA in playoff scoring.

He has more points in the postseason than Stockton, Paul George, Isaiah Thomas, who won two titles. Jason Tatum, whether people like him or not, they think he's top five. He is on track to be a top seven score in the history of the playoffs in the NBA. Look what he's done since he entered the league. I would argue they're very well run, so he could play another 10 years in Boston or move. So, I mean, to me, because they have a very very,

very good brand, very good general manager, it's a real thoughtful franchise, those numbers are only going to go up. He's going to get more and more and more opportunities. And because athletes like Tatum take care of themselves so aware, well, it's not the steak and potatoes gambling and cigar era of Michael Jordan, that if I said to you, he played for 12 more years, he'll end up like top two to three score all time. Absolutely, he'll be behind LeBron, but he won't be behind many. Well, Luca could also catch LeBron. I don't know. I just don't understand how people cannot be rooting for Jason Tatum. With all the nonsense he deals with, oh, he's not clutch.

I don't know if he's the number one. You don't know how people, you don't have to be rooting against Tatum, but you could be rooting for Luca because he's so great and it's a fun story. Who are you rooting for most? Well, I root for interesting. I know. Okay, fine. Well, then you're just dismissing it. That's my whole show.

And so what's more interesting is the, Celtics unraveling. Yeah. And Luca winning. That's better for our show. I root for our show. I don't root for teams. Yeah, because if the Celtics win,

nobody's going to say, does Kyrie Irving leave? But if Tatum, I'm not even rooting against Tatum, if the Celtics just sort of unravel at home in a big game five or whatever, or seven, oh my God, that is cats and dogs living together. That's unrats, tire fire on the four. 405. That's good for us.

Yeah. No, you're, I mean, I agree with that. I just, I worry about the storyline for the Celtics if they lose this series. Are people going to come out and say, it just doesn't work. You've got to break up. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, you don't do that. But it does, it does. It does. What does it do that? Well, let's say the Celtics

lost in six, not even seven. Okay. They lost in Dallas, game six. You wouldn't break Tatum and Brown up. You would probably be concerned. You'd probably say, you know What really screwed us up is Porzingis and his health. Can we go find a Derek lively?

Can we go find a young guy that's healthy? Let's not go back, double down, rinse, and repeat on the Porzingis thing because he came to us with injury history, and now he was hurt at the end of the year. I would stay with Drew Brown. I mean, you kind of are locked into almost all those guys for a while. You are, but you're asking me what would happen. You wouldn't break up Tatum and Brown. I would hope not, but I think we're going to hear probably some of that.

You know, there's a bunch of Boston Yahoo's in the media who think they know what to do. Let's not. And they want to, oh, you got to win titles. Some of the best American journalist, Bob Ryan, Dan Shaughnessy. My favorite. I like Shaughnessy. Felger and Maz, the best local show in the country's Boston. It's very good.

Along with the Euros, it's all part of a huge summer of soccer, featuring the world's biggest stars starting June 14th on Fox. All right, John Fanta, Fox Sports College basketball reporter, says that Dan Hurley, the Yukon coach, informed his players, he is in talk with the Lakers. Dan Hurley did not hide the fact he, his agent, are talking to the Lakers. It's real. Huskies have a noon practice. Hurley told his players, his business as usual for now, but the Lakers did call. He and his agent are in discussions. So the Wojbom is, as usual, accurate.

Dan Hurley in real discussions. I think it's a smart move. I don't think the Lakers have the stomach for. a rebuild. I do think the Lakers have probably told LeBron James, they gave him a little bit of heads up. This is one of our decisions. There's a story out that LeBron told Jeannie Buss and Rob Polenka, whoever you hire, hire somebody for the next 10 years, not for the next one or two that I would be here. So that's the story

being reported today that LeBron said, hey, just whoever you're going to hire, build a big brand, get the right guy, don't make it a one or a two-year thing. so which is what the Lakers have been prone to do, put a Band-Aid on a flesh wound, and it just doesn't work. So you'd have to pay Hurley a fortune to leave. You'd have to make a big, long commitment. I think he's a great coach. I think it would work.

It's a family of basketball geniuses, but are the Lakers willing to take a step back? Because LeBron's got one or two years left. A.D., you know, you can build around him, but he's not leading you to a title. He is a number two. That's his personality. that's his game. Offensively, he can be sort of hit and miss. So there you go. I thought this was interesting.

Watching the WNBA and Caitlin Clark story is fascinating. The best women's basketball coach, Gino Oriama, said he thinks Caitlin Clark is being targeted. So he said targeted. He used that word. So let me just ask all you media and fans that think she's being targeted. What did you expect that she would be given a layup drill, wildly popular, college player from Iowa, joins the WNBA, and now is its richest player before she plays a game. What did you think?

She wasn't going to be tested. Diana Tarrasi told us this was what's going to happen. She said she's going to struggle in year one. And the reason Diana Tarrasi is a good comp is Diana Tarrosi is about the same size. And she said, she's going to get, it's going to be rough for her. I'm going to push her around. It's a physical lead. So just from a basketball perspective, what Caitlin Clark is going through is understandable.

Forget all the emotional stuff. She's six feet and 150 pounds. When Steph Curry came into the NBA out of Davidson, he was like six, two and a half, 172. He got pushed around. You know what Steph Curry is now? Six two and a half, 198. Curry came in rail thin. Look like a high schooler.

Now he's cut. That's the reality of going to a pro locker room, pro nutritionalist, nothing against the Iowa lunch table. But this is the pros. This is what quarterbacks look like. This is what athletes look like when they get. I just drove by the Laker facility yesterday. It is, it is beautiful. They've got rows and rows of things.

These guys don't want for anything. It's not college. So, yes, a fairly slight player. You know, six feet, 150, probably has to get to about 157, has to put on weight, has to get used to it. She's only shooting 38% from the floor. Also, the WNBA front-loaded her schedule. So you would expect she'd get beat up a little bit and be tired. I saw her in an interview two days ago.

She didn't have the same energy. She sounded tired. And the other thing, you have to remember, in the NBA, you get drafted in June. You don't play until October. In the WNBA, you get drafted, they hand you a jersey, they blow the whistle, and you have to play. She's been playing nonstop. She doesn't get a break. So this league is not great for rookies, especially stars who walk in and make double what every other player does,

triple, quadruple because of endorsements. This was all completely predictable. If Steph Curry didn't play at Davidson had ended up in the championship game and, let's say, played at Kansas, he'd be much more of a target because if he played at Kansas, he'd come in with a shoe deal. He came from Davidson. He didn't have one.

The only notable thing about Curry's feet early is he had a bad ankle. It wasn't about shoe deal. She's coming in with a shoe deal. She's coming in kind of slight. So this is all just the basketball stuff. It's totally predictable. Diana Tarasi, great player, said,

it's going to be rough. Yes, she's shooting 38%. Next year, my guess, she'll have her sea legs under better foundation she'll shoot in the mid 40% I mean she's averaging 16 5 and 6 and a half she's a good player those will all perk up but this is uh it's just just don't take if we're going to use step curry as a comp then use step curry as a comp if step would have come out as a higher profile guy and that skinny it had been on the floor constantly so that's just the reality of it she's getting she is dealing with what

you deal with for her size in a pro league. Here was Gino this week on her being a target. Is she facing the rookie challenge, the rookie hardships that are inherent with being a rookie? Yes. She's also being targeted. And I don't remember when Jordan came into the league, guys looking to go out and beat them up. I don't remember when Bird and Magic came in the league and elevated the NBA.

I don't remember them getting targeted. getting beat up just because of who they were and the intention they were getting. But it's different. Jordan did get beat up about year three when he became a threat to the Pistons and Celtics. She's not a threat to win the title. Either was Jordan when he got to that dysfunctional bulls team. But the minute Jordan became a threat, he was the most gifted player and a threat to now win the titles. He started getting tackled.

Jordan rules. so she's not a threat to win, but she is a star in a league that's never had one. The NBA had it stars. Bird was there and Magic and Dr. Jay and Wilton. NVA had it stars. They weren't starved for stars. That's not what NBA has always had stars. WNBA's never had a star.

So if you're the catalyst, if you're the star, there were some Tiger Woods animosity. I mean, nobody was throwing clubs at him. But there was a lot of stuff. Some of it. There were racial overtones. remember multiple golfers saying kind of inappropriate things. Everybody was a little chippy with Tiger until everybody realized, hey, these purses are going up.

Tigers making all this money. But there was pushback on Tiger initially before he started dominating and driving the purses for all the tournaments up. Cole Hamels. Remember when he threw it, Bryce Harper? Remember that? Remember Bryce Harper, the chosen one out of high school? Cole Hamel's thrown at him.
