Hey, this story's a good one. We're going to be good. We're a day away from the NBA draft, which I've got to be honest, as a basketball guy my entire life,

this is a hard one to sell you on. We'll discuss why it's so difficult and what exactly has happened that's allowed us to get to this point where the NBA draft used to be the draft. It did. And now they're breaking into two days, and I mean, obviously the Bronny James, thing is going to cause people to watch, I guess, in day two, but good luck in naming a lot of these guys that are trapped in day one. We'll talk about that throughout the show. Got some Dallas Cowboys chatter to discuss, especially with, stop me, have heard this sport,

but apparently the head coach thinks the owner might be meddling a little bit too much. We'll get to that. Also waiting on Jordan Love and the likely contract extension. That's part of the discussion. Maybe a little baseball. A little hockey with a hockey champion being crowsy. last night in South Florida, the Edmonton Oilers. You talk about classic old school hockey go back traditionally, right?

Edmonton, Alberta. They marched down to South Florida after erasing a three-none series lead, and then they lose in what, like, was exciting. It's not the most exciting moment in the sports calendar, but exciting. The juxtaposition of that with, for example, the WNBA will get to a little bit later on. This is my first time filling in for Colin

since I was named the head coach of Wisconsin Green Bay, or we just go by Green Bay, the Phoenix. So I'm actually broadcasting out live from my office. We already had practice this morning as part of our four hours. We can practice with the guys during the week. And so there's no better person in the history of sports radio to speak on a topic that I'm going to speak on,

which just happened to happen yesterday officially. in Los Angeles. J.J. Reddica's new head coach of the Los Angeles Slikers. And look, it's a different approach to hire a guy who's never been a coach. As much as I've never been a paid head coach, I have coach teams that have played overseas. I've run my own AAU program in Southern California. I coached for my dad's program, the same program back when he was alive. I've been a consultant at different places.

I've interviewed for a lot of jobs. So I would say there's a little bit more experience, actually a lot more experience than what JJ has, but JJ has more of the experience that actually matters. He played in the NBA. So look, there's no one else who can tell you what I know now, which is the coaching, granted, I haven't coached a game yet as far as college basketball.

I understand that it. it's going to be way more difficult than coaching in AAU and coaching overseas in many ways, because teams will have at the end of the season, 30 games of film, they'll know everything you do, and you've got to find a way to still put your players in the best position. But can it be done? Yeah. It can be done. It's being done. And it's been done in the NBA. I mean, Jason Kidd just coached in the NBA finals.

Granted, I don't think it went great in Brooklyn, but he got that job fresh out of playing. He didn't even have a year or two to kind of catch his breath. Steve Curry never coached a day in his life. He seems to have worked out okay. Fred O'Hoyberg hadn't coach and then became the head coach of the Iowa State Cyclones, his alma mater and was great. He was okay in the NBA. Some of that's more personnel driven.

He's been very good at Nebraska. And we could go through the Bill Russell was a player coach. Magic Johnson was a coach hadn't coached before. That did not work out well. we've seen both sides to it. But I thought there was a lot of the answers and a way in which he presented the answers, which tells you kind of the real story.

First, I don't know why JJ insists on saying this. I don't know why the Lakers continue to promote this idea. But JJ was asked about LeBron James' role in the hiring process. Here was his response. Lois' advice to you throughout this whole coaching search process. He didn't provide him. advice. LeBron and I did not talk about the Lakers job

until Thursday afternoon about 30 minutes after I was offered the job. And that was very intentional on both our parts. Okay, there's somebody in the background that said what we're all thinking. He's like, ah,

come on. You didn't talk once about the job? Look, I think Rob Polenka, he not everybody loves Rob Polinkin the NBA he's always been straight up with me again full disclosure I coach Rob Polinka's son for two years this son's name's Durham great kid great kid left-handed can really shoot make shots not a great mover but a great shooter I've never known Rob to to to not do something that has a lot of thought in it right

there is purpose in the things he says and things he does. If you think for one second that any of us are buying that JJ Reddick didn't take the job that LeBron James wanted him to have. And I get it. Like this is kind of LeBron's thing, which is he feels like he wants to be like the godfather and people just doing things for him without him asking them to be done. But one, the godfather was a book and then an epic movie. Two, I don't believe he's actually ever read the book.

I'm not sure he's totally watched the movie because he can't pick out his favorite quote. But three, that's just a movie and a book. The reality is everyone knows. And why wouldn't you? Why wouldn't you discuss with your best player what's it look like? Why wouldn't you understand what you're walking into? Or if you're taking the job, are you going to be here? And I think most everybody knows LeBron James is going to be there.

you know, his agent can throw out whatever he wants about him being a free agent, about him potentially leaving, about there's no ties to Brani. He can say all these things. The reality is that LeBron is not leaving his daughter in elementary school or his son and other son in high school. The reality is he's trying to leverage the fact that he could be a free agent to get them to draft, get them to draft Brani. and the fact is that in order to make sure that he while he opts out of his contract he signs the new one

you got to do the best you can to make him happy and there isn't outside of Tailu tell me somebody else you can go that guy's going to work with LeBron James do we know if JJ's good enough we have no idea we don't but in order to command the respect

of an NBA locker room usually you have to have played in the NBA and in order to coach in the NBA, you have to have the respect of the locker room. In order to have the respect of the locker room, you have to have coached in the NBA or played the NBA. It's a little bit of a catch-22. Here's JJ when he was asked about the Lakers pursuing Danny Hurley. I was getting ready to call game one of the NBA finals when the Dan Hurley news broke. And Rob was quick to call me.

We had a great conversation during that whole four-day period. Like at no point was my ego or feeling. hurt or bruised in any way. Dan Hurley is a two-time national champion at Yukon. I am a two-time 55 Swiss League champion in the third and fourth grade division. Like, I understood. Totally accurate. It's the only way you can't approach it.

By the way, that's the way I got this job. This job was open a year ago, actually in February, and a coach named Sundance Wix came and got the job. and Sonny had been a head coach previously at Northern State. He had worked with my boss, Josh Moon, there. And when Josh called me and said, hey, listen, you're my 1B, but Sundance Wix is going to take the job, going to offer the job going to take the job.

Had I not handled it the way that JJ handled it, I wouldn't have got the job when they circled back to me after Sunny left to take the Wyoming job. And you can be as bitter as you want, but you've got to realize, especially in our position, And when I say hour, I know I didn't play as much or as well or as long as JJ Reddick, but the idea is still the same, right? Former player becomes broadcaster, gets a head coaching job without being an assistant coach. It's a different path than other people.

It's the same path as each other. Which can't be is like super bitter Betty that a guy didn't want to go all in on his career when he had somebody who similar level of energy and excitement created, at least for me. And oh yeah, by the way, he'd been a head coach and he'd have. had a resume and had work with the athletic director before. Who am I to criticize? The same could go for Danny Hurley. Like if you're JJ Reddick, what are you going to be critical of?

No, Danny hasn't coached to play in the NBA. But Danny has been as good to college level as anyone has ever been in short order here in the last couple of years. So, of course, I see some parallels. Do I think it'll work? Well, look, here's why it has a great chance of working. here's what I have is a great chance of working she's got the buy-in of his best player right if the most important

you are in basketball who your best player is your best player is engaged in the whole process he bought into who you are and like look lebron can sit here and try and separate himself from jjay i didn't have anything to do with the whatever he knows he's forever tied to j jraddick

he's sworn by j j jraddick's intelligence as a basketball guy So if JJ Reddick doesn't have it, it is on LeBron. And when LeBron wants to make something work, he usually makes it work. So we can sit here and say they didn't talk about it, whatever. We can act like LeBron doesn't have anything to do with the hiring, or that doesn't mean that he'll be back. We know LeBron will be back.

We know he has something to do with the hiring. And even if it's more perception than reality, he's got to make this thing work. otherwise, this is LeBron's handpicked guy. This is the guy who did the podcast with LeBron. If it doesn't work with him, it won't work with anybody. All right, coming up next, I'm Doug Gottliebilling in for Colin. This is The Herd. He covers the Cowboys for the Athletic, but you had the story, which so many of us discussed yesterday, which is you got a head coach of Mike McCarthy, who's becoming frustrated with how much he has to deal with Jerry Jones. You have Dak Prescott, who appears to.

to be playing in a kind of prove it year for his next contract. You got some stuff there to get to, right? Also, we'll talk some NBA draft. Mark Medina is going to join us next hour. Ryan Hollins in the third hour. We've got a good amount of things to discuss. Let's welcome in John Moshoda. He joins us.

He covers the Cowboys for the athletic. I am Doug Gottlieb. I'm Doug Gottlieb. And this is the Hurt, Fox Sports Radio, IHeart Radio app. And John, let's just start with Mike McCarthy. How is he viewed by the Cowboys Press? I think he's viewed as a guy that they like a lot of things that he's done and that he's had success at a certain level,

but I think that it's pretty obvious there's some disappointment that they haven't done more in the postseason. If they had, he wouldn't be going under his final year of his contract. And so that's what it comes down to. That's what he was hired for. It was to get past where Jason Garrett was going, which was, you know, he'd have one good season, one down season, they'd get in the playoffs, wouldn't make a deep run, bringing Mike McCarthy thinking that this will be the answer,

we'll finally make a deep run, and he's had some really good teams. But ultimately, because he hasn't been able to do it in the playoffs, that's why he's sitting here in a final year of his deal. How does their roster look in comparison to or alongside with how they want to play? I mean, it's still a good roster. That's the thing. There's a lot of doom and gloom with the Cowboys right now because they didn't do much in the off-season. It might have been the least that they've ever done in an off season in the franchise of history.

So it's not going to be a better team on paper than it was last year. And so, you know, if you're following the team, why would you think it's going to be any different in the postseason if you don't have a better roster? And they're just, they're expecting a lot of second, third year jumps from guys that, frankly, that's a lot of hope. You don't know for sure if they're going to do that. And then obviously you need guys like Dak and CD and Michael Parsons to play their best ball. in January, and that hasn't happened either. But on paper, it's still one of the better rosters in the NFL. It's still a team that

should be making the playoffs. But the problem is whether they win nine games or 15, there's really no reason to believe in them until you see them do something in January. No question about it. What about Dak? Obviously, a disastrous first half against the Green Bay

Packers ultimately did him in. In the last year, going the last year of his deal, where does he stand with the franchise? they i have never been told anything negative about dack by anybody in the franchise on or off the record never once doesn't matter how many drinks were being had where i was that nobody i have never heard anybody say a negative word about dac i just kind of wonder where we sit today if jerry jones is so frustrated by the way the season ended i mean that green bay loss you're down 32

midway through the fourth quarter you can argue that's the worst loss in cowboys history didn't play great. It's not his, it's not all on him that they lost, but there's a part of me to think that Jerry, he needs to see more from DAC in year nine to want to give him that big $55, $60 million a year contract. And if you're Dak Prescott, you're probably fine with waiting on that because if you don't get it from the Cowboys, you're going to get it from another team if they let him go to free agency. Even if he gets hurt, he got hurt before his last contract, and that he's ending ankle injury in 2020, still got his monster deal with everything that you could possibly want,

and no trade clause, no franchise tag. So he's in a great spot because he's going to get his money regardless. I think he would prefer to get it from the Cowboys. But I think the Cowboys, and mainly it comes down to Jerry, because he's the one making the decisions at the end of the day, I think ultimately he wants to see more from Dak in the postseason. And he's not going to say that publicly, but the actions speak louder in words.

And the actions are he doesn't have a new contract yet. Yeah, I think I would agree with you. And you know more than I do, but just outside looking in. You have to want more from him in the postseason. Look at San Francisco two years ago in Green Bay this year. Neither were good. The story out, I think yesterday, was McCarthy growing increasingly frustrated over Jerry Jones meddling.

I mean, you didn't know Jerry Jones is going to meddle? You know? John, I look at this as like the janitor going, I can't believe I have to clean up bathrooms. You didn't know that that's part of janitorial services, right? I don't really understand. Maybe you can help us out because you know this group on a day-to-day basis. What do you make of this story that McCarthy is growing tired of Jerry Jones meddling? Well, when I first saw the story, one of the first things I thought of was you can say that probably about every single coach that's ever coach under Jerry Jones or the Dallas Cowboys.

There's just things that he does that are going to frustrate you. Now, I will say, I don't think that these things surprise. McCarthy now as much as maybe they did in 2020, 2020, 2021 when he first took over, especially coming from an organization like Green Bay that's run completely different than this one. And so because of that, I know that there were some things that surprised them,

but I don't think it's anything any different than any coach would have. I mean, it goes from the fact that, you know, your owner and general manager talks three times a week during the season, twice on the radio and once after games. I mean, when Jerry talks after games and he comes at a locker room, you know, there's a good 15, 20, 30 people around him. him. And there's sometimes, that's going on while Mike McCarthy's doing his post-game press conference. There might only be five people in there. And that's going to, that's going to wear on any

coach because they want to be the one that's putting out that message, especially after a big loss. But Gary's out there holding court for 15, 20 minutes because he provides a lot of, you know, intriguing information. So there's one thing there. The other is nobody has more access to a team media-wise than the Cowboys in terms of there's always cameras around. There's tours always around the facility. their practice fields on the outside are in between two, you know, 15-story buildings that you don't know exactly everybody who's watching your practices. And so there's always going to be that part of, you know, do we have to go inside to work

on certain things because we don't know who's watching this stuff go on. And, I mean, if you have subscription Netflix, you know if there's always something Cowboys related that's on there. I don't think cameras follow around a team behind the scenes more than this team. And these are all things that just don't go on at other organizations. and so you have to deal with a lot more here. And so I can see where anybody that knows Mike McCarthy would think, yeah, he gets fed up with certain things.

But at the same time, I would say the only thing that would be new to right now would be the fact of, hey, maybe just because, hey, he's going under the final year of his contract and he probably feels like, hey, I've won 12 games each to last three regular seasons. Only the chiefs have won more. Why don't I have a new contract? I can see a coach being frustrated with that, but then the Cowboys will come back and say, well, you know, we need more wins in the postseason. Speaking of young quarterbacks and new contracts, Justin Herbert's new contract finally takes place this year,

strength kicks in kind of this year. What do you think about the fit with Harbaugh's system and coaching? I think it's going to be fascinating because I think with a Justin Herbert type, you look at it from a perspective of, oh, well, they're just going to throw the ball over the yard and score a bunch of points and try and outscore everyone. well, that's not really Jim Harbaugh's style. And so I think in a way, it might, where you see Justin Herbert's numbers maybe come down a little bit more, and maybe they aren't, you know, the great fantasy numbers all the time.

I do think that he's going to, his system is going to help them, Jim Harbaugh system, is going to help them win more games. And so maybe, maybe it doesn't look as good on the back of Harbaugh, I mean, on the back of Justin's football card. But I do think that Harbaugh is going to have success in the NFL. I do think that he's in a good situation there. So, yeah, I don't see any reason why to think other than that. No, I don't see any reason to think other than that either. You know, they don't necessarily have the weapons at wide receiver,

but it does look like with Greg Roman. We know they're going to try and run the football. Take some pressure off of him that way. Okay, so last thing, kind of circling back to the Cowboys, Tyrant Smith no longer there. The strength to this group for a long time was not just the skill positions. It was up front. the older offensive line aged out.

What's left to protect Dak Prescott? They still got some good players. I mean, Zach Martin still has gas left in the tank. He's still one of the best guards in the league. And then Tyler Smith is arguably one of the best guards in the league as well. So you have outstanding guard play. The issue is that tackle, you could be starting a rookie and Tyler Guyton at left tackle. And I don't, I mean, unless you're taking one of these tackles in the top 10,

if you're getting a tackle that falls, you know, to the bottom 20s or out of the first round, there's going to be some growing pains. The idea that they're just, it's not, this isn't Joe Alt, you know, so there's going to be some issues there, I think, where there's going to be some times where they're going to have to do some other things to give some extra protection over there to help Dax blindside. But I think ultimately, as much as anybody can criticize the Cowboys for a lot of things, the one thing you really can is what they've done, drafting offensive linemen in the first round. They've had a lot of success doing that.

And so I do think ultimately, Geyton will be the answer. or left aggl. It might come with some growing pains early on. And then the other is just center. I mean, they let Tyler Bayadesh sign with Washington and free agency. And they drafted Cooper B. Bia out of Kansas State, who's played mostly guard at Kansas State. Now they're going to hope that, you know, he can be their future potentially at center. And so I just, those are two positions where we're used to seeing the Cowboys offensive line being one of the best in the league.

And I just think you're going to see some more growing pains from this group. And that's obviously not ideal for Mike McCarthy in the final year of his contract, Jack in the final of year of his contract. So it'll be interesting. I think ultimately that these guys will be the right guys with those positions. I just think early on there might be some rough spots. John, great stuff. Awesome insight.

No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Hello, Ryan. Good morning, Doug. Good to be with you here on the herd. Let's turn our attention from the NFL to the NBA. The Warriors are facing a tough decision with Clay Thompson as his contract is up and his potential exit in free agency.

Here is Golden State General Manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. saying they want Clay back, but it's complicated. I'm reasonable, I'm rational, that's how I'm always going to operate, but to say like a guy like Clay Thompson, who's met so much this franchise to completely strip the emotion away from it, I think that's almost impossible. But, you know, this is a business. And we'll talk through things. We continue to talk through things. And, you know, like I said, we're hopeful, but, you know, we'll see. We've got to figure things out. And that's just the everybody has the limit to what you're willing to spend.

And this is why I've never liked radio segments that, and you don't do this wrong. Ryan and Jason Stewart, my producer for my show, who's in with us today as well. He doesn't do it either. But we all know it's been done where you go like, well, would you trade Clay Thompson? What are you offering me in return? Would you re-sign Clay Thompson? Well, what is the dollar amount? You know, all these things matter.

Definitely. And I think what you're hearing from Mike Dunleave is like, look, do we want them back? Yeah, Clay Thompson can still play. Yeah, I mean. Can't be where your top three players. Sure. I mean, he's not quite the same elite two-way player he once was, by any means, but he's still effective. Of course. Yeah, he averaged just under.

He has to be your fifth best starter. Okay? Fifth best starter. May 4th, fifth best starter. And again, instead of building around the fact he's your best defense player, he's still good. Yeah. Okay? He's still good. There's nothing wrong with him.

He's just not a star anymore. And he can't pay a guy who's not a star, star money, because it just limits you. Right, he's just not 27 years old and can play on the other team's all-star players so that Steph Curry can just go out there and run the entire offense and not be a complete and total liability. Right, plus he can't score the way he used to. Yeah. Okay, but now, now can he get you 14, 15 a night? Yes. Yeah.

Can he guard? Yes. I mean, even in a down year last year, he averaged just under 18 a game, shot 50% from the field, and 39 from three. Now, he had a really... The three was a little down. Yeah. But can you expect him in the life of a three-year contract to average somewhere, you know, to the 14 to 16 a game?

Yes. Absolutely. And be efficient doing it, sure. He just won't get to those nights of 30, 35 nearly as often. Right, yeah. He's not going to drop 36 and a quarter dribbling the ball four times or whatever he did that one time against. I think it was the Kings.

Yeah. Yeah, those days are over. And I mean, I think really what this also comes down to is the other side of the equation, which is what is it that Clay wants? Is Clay looking for that big payday and for him to be a member of a team where he can still be that number two option? Well, if that's the case, then it's probably not going to be in Golden State. But, you know, maybe a team that has young talent like we keep hearing the Orlando Magic, maybe they are willing to go there for Clay. but then that means he has to then value that role that night in and night out position over finishing his career with the Warriors. Because I think it's pretty clear that the Warriors are not willing to probably give him that top tier money that he may be looking for right now.

Nor should they be, right? That would be bad business. Bad business. And I think hiring Dunleavy, that helps because he hasn't been with him the whole time. I'm sure, I'm sure Clay, everybody's got an ego. His ego's probably got to be hurt by it. Yeah. But the reality is, I don't think we're saying anything that people don't know.

I mean, I think people... People think he's washed. He's not washed. Sure, sure. But I do think people feel this sort of you owe it to him loyalty because of what he means to the organization. I mean, like we've heard people will say this about the late, Kobe Bryant and the way he finished his career with the Lakers and that they owed it to him.

Now, Kobe's a little different than Clay, but in that same idea is that he's done so much for the organization, you should be able to just give him what he's asking for at this point in this career. But I don't think that's what makes the Warriors the Warriors. Yeah, that's a great point.

How that work for Lakers? Yeah. You know, at some point at some point, like, you're, yes, you want to honor what he's done and treat him with great respect. And if it's even close, right? If it's even close, yeah, I mean, you're throwing some more money here. But he's not a max player.

Right. He's just not. You can't give Max player money. You know? So, yeah, his ego is going to be a little bit hurt by it. Okay, that's called getting older. Just is. You know, sometimes you've got to suck it up and go like,

like, is it really that bad a thing to make $30 million instead of $50 million? I don't know. All right. Let's turn back to the NFL. You mentioned this briefly there with John Moshoda, but the Jets added eight-time Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith from the Cowboys to help fortify that offensive line for Aaron Rogers in order to try and keep Smith upright for this upcoming season.

The Athletic is reporting that the Jets planned for training camp to be heavy on rest days for Smith. Yeah, I mean, look, there's a guy who is the best in the business, but his time has come and maybe sort of passed. A lot of times, and this is like the Bill Belichick thing, right? Guys that he trade away or released or allowed to be signed away, those guys usually had one good year and then kind of off into the sunset. We'll see if Tyrant Smith has one good year. Yeah.

The thing is he's been hurt a lot. And remember, yes, he's going to have rest days. Well, you got Aaron Rogers who, he may have some rest days too, but he's missing some of what I think is valuable time with some new teammates. So, you know, how it all comes together. In a perfect world, Tyrant Smith returns to Prime Tyrant Smith with Aaron Rogers. And if you give him time, he's still awesome. But, man, I don't know.

Yeah, I completely agree with a lot of those points you were saying. Normally, I'm not going to make too big a deal out of something like this, that a veteran is getting rest days and not necessarily participating day in a day out of training camp. But Aaron barely played last year. He's never played with Tyron Smith. And in addition to Smith in total, they have three out of their five projected starting offensive linemen are new to the Jets and have never played together. So as a general rule, when we tend to see what makes Elite O lines across the NFL, it's continuity and chemistry,

which is something that this team is clearly, clearly lacking at offensive line. Not to mention you touched on it. Tyron Smith, who has had a great career, hasn't played more than 13 games in a season since 2016. So this sort of falls in line with sometimes the discussion that we have with NBA and load management. Like, okay, how effective is load management? I know you don't want to play the guy too much,

but then what's the balance between something like what we saw with the clippers at times, which is like these guys don't really ever play together, and then you just expect them to turn it on at some point. So it's certainly going to be a challenge for the Jets, this training camp, and heading into this upcoming season. The Jets are buying a used land cursor, right?

That's a used range rover, excuse me. Right. Use range rover. where, I mean, when a range rover's new, you know, fresh out of the factory, like, dude, that thing drives like a dream. Engine is cool, whatever. But, you know, you get some miles on it. We know how those things act and react, and he's just not that guy anymore.

So the older range rovers, not nearly as appealing as some of the other cars that are older. And we'll just see what the percentage of, the thing that changes as you get older is the percentage of games in which you're the old you. Right. You know, and if you get in your 30s as a left tackle, you've been carrying all that weight for that many years, and you've suffered through a bunch of injuries. It's the can you be, can you be Tyrant Smith one in two games, one in three, or one in four, one in five? That's the real challenge. And we'll wrap up with this, 49ers, and Brandon Ayuk continued to be at odds over a new contract. Super Bowl champion and ESPN analyst Ryan Clark reported that Iuk met with the 49ers yesterday about said contract and also added this.

when Clark recorded an interview with IUC recently, he showed up with the Washington Commanders number two overall pick quarterback Jaden Daniels, his former teammate at Arizona State. This is also now on the heels, of course, of that TikTok video of IUC talking to Daniels on FaceTime, expressing that he feels as though the 49ers don't want him. Well, here's the problem.

He's under contract. That's a very good point. To make $14 million. year. That's what the, that's what the breakdown is. And, you know, it's the club option. Technically, he's an unrestricted free agent at the end of next year. But because he was a first-round draft pick, I believe they can franchise type of they want. And again, again and again. So, look, we've seen plenty of wide receivers be sent packing, but this is the year where he wants a long-term extension. And the question is for Brandon Ayyuk. And this is, it's a real,

it's a real one. I understand you're in a place where you're probably thinking, I'm not going to catch 120 balls in a year. You're just not. And he doesn't have the versatility of a Debo and they already paid Debo Samuel. The question becomes,

you know, you got to just be very, very cautious of getting so upset and making too big of a stink of it so that it doesn't become an option and the Niners can really screw you. If they want they can raise you. They can trade you late to a team

that you don't want to get traded to. There's a lot of different things they can do. But in the meantime, let's just remember. He's still under contract, and they can have him under contract for three more years they want without negotiation. And that's right. Music with News. Well, that's the news. And it's really interesting because when you think of drafts, obviously the football draft has far overshadowed out the NBA draft for probably since the LeBron draft. I mean, like last year, Victor Ebenyama, it wasn't as big a thing as maybe should have been, but now you start to realize, holy cow. that guy could very easily become the best player in the league in the next three to five years. But it's interesting, you know, it feels like we've overmined a resource. It feels like we've overmined a resource. And, you know, pick whatever you want. I mean, this is like the Chilean Seabas. Isn't Chilean Seabas actually endangered now?

you'll go to a restaurant and they'll say chile and sea bass and you're not eating chile and sea bass because i believe chile and sea bass are are endangered because we overfished it and that's what we've done with with the with the college game really and and i i do think there will be some evening out so the g league night has been an abject disaster it's really interesting. You know, for 26 years, the WNBA lost money. And what people should know is it's not subsidized nearly as much by the NBA. Those teams are individually owned, so it's not as bad.

But the fact is that the G League Ignite was always a money loser. It lasted like five years, and it was gone. The WNBA lasted 25 years and was not gone. But the G League Ignite is going away. Players are being compensated, some handsomely so, to stay in college. There is the opportunity to go to Australia and some overseas teams, although I think with the money people are making in college, they won't leave. They'll go to college and rightfully so. But we have quite obviously overmined the resource of college athletics in that, I mean, you can't name half the guys in the first round.

You've never seen them play. You don't know who they are. And I think that one of the parts that is missing to the discussion, which has always been missing, to the discussion is that the NBA does play a massive role in the minimization of the importance of college athletics, college basketball, you know, they just do. They play a massive, massive role in it. And, you know, Adam Silver can sit there and say, like, their problems are not our problems, and now that players can be compensated, whatever.

Again, I think it's ultimately going to work out because players are going to stay in college longer because many of the borderline ones understand I can make more money than I can't stay in and then potentially going overseas or playing in the G league and that G league stuff will always be there for me. That's the perception. But diminishing the value of college,

what you get is you get unfinished products. But more than anything, forget about whether unfinished products as players or as people. they don't have a following. And there was an article Steve Kerr wrote, and this is going back to his days, I believe when he was still the general manager of the sons, it may have been when he was a broadcaster,

where he talked about the fact that, like the NBA needs players to stay in the college more. If we think back in our lifetime, very few players have come out in the one-and-done era. I can think of two that had a gigantic following. One was Zion Williamson, the other one was Kevin Durant. outside of that, most of the guys who were one and done,

they didn't have the following. You know, it actually helps the NBA's business when, I mean, look at what's happened with the WNBA with Caitlin Clark. Is Caitlin Clark the reason the league is on fire? Yes. But a good portion of it was the fact that she stayed and played this past year. I don't believe she could have come out the previous year after three years. chose not to.

Now, she could have stayed too long and gone back for another year. That wouldn't have made sense. Now all her records are clean and valid, and we don't have to throw out that she played an extra year. But the fact is that we learned about her. I don't know when you learned about her. I learned about Caitlin Clark about mid-season, not this past year, the year before.

And then she goes to a championship game, and there's all the theatrics with Angel Reese. Had that been it, had we only gotten to know Caitlin Clark over that month-long, month-and-a-half, two-month-long period of time, wouldn't have had nearly same effect. But because she came back for an additional year, everybody knows who Caitlin Clark is. Everybody followed her, and many of you watched her play a regular season game in college. People are watching the WNBA now who made fun of it for 25 years. And the fact is that the men's game has gone the opposite route, and it's gotten the opposite sort of effect. women's basketball is on fire

because you know all these even Angel Reese and again I'm not one of these guys that thinks anybody's tuning to go oh my Angel Reese is playing let's turn or not but the fact is you know who she is why?

Because she was part of the conversation of basketball for two consecutive years we don't have that in the NBA all these guys let me just get out as soon as I can but part of what makes it work is when people know who you are and so they follow you

that's why the college has worked for football. Obviously a different collective bargaining agreement, but three years, but you build up a following. People know who you are. Worst draft ever, no question. But part of it is we've overmined this resource. I'm Doug Gottlieb. Been for Colin coming up in the herd.
