Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me.
Starting point is 00:01:09 I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:01:27 Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard,
Starting point is 00:01:57 but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeart Radio app by searching heard. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Oh, here we go on
Starting point is 00:02:35 a Thursday with stuff happening. NFL tonight, Dolphins, Bengals, Aaron Judge, tying the American League home run all-time record. It's the herd, wherever you may be and however you may be listening. Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio FS1, one hour from now if you play fantasy football, bet football, just love football, want to get smarter at football, Greg. Co-sell. One hour from now, J-MAC. We're all watching little baseball in the last few days.
Starting point is 00:03:06 Baseball can, we're not always sure we trust everything we see in baseball. This feels a little different, right? A couple weeks to the postseason, very stoked. I think we're headed toward a Yankees Dodgers World Series, right? That's what the world wants. Well, it's not what the world in Atlanta, Houston want. I disagree. So Aaron Judge is six, seven. He's two. He's 280, he looks like what a home run guy should look like. Right? There's not a lot of ambiguity with Aaron Judge. He's big.
Starting point is 00:03:36 He's stronger than everybody else. He looks like what a home run king should look like. And last night, tying Roger Maris, here's what it sounded like. And the payoff. There goes that he left. It is high. It is far. It is gone.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Number 61. He ties Rod. Maris for the American League's single season record with 61 home runs. It's a two-run, Judgy and Blas. Here comes the judge. Now, for the record, McGuire, Bonds, and Konseco, at times we thought they were clean and they were for a while. But Aaron Judge feels different. And here's why.
Starting point is 00:04:22 There are three things in life that they fall into this category. believe what you want. And those three things to me are religion. I'm agnostic. If you think somebody upstairs pulling all the strings, I got no problem with it, but I'm agnostic. That's number one.
Starting point is 00:04:44 NFTs, number two. I think it's a grift, a con. If you want to put your 401K in those puppies, knock yourself out, champ. Never spend a dollar with them. And number three, home run hitters. I believe two are clean indisputably.
Starting point is 00:05:02 Ken Griffey Jr., Aaron Judge, in the last 20 years. That's it. Everybody else is dirty or I got at least like 1% of suspicion. Maybe I'm naive. I never had that suspicion with Ken Griffey Jr. And I've never had it with Aaron Judge. I will never invest in NFTs. And I don't think life is fate.
Starting point is 00:05:29 I think it's based on your own decisions. Don't waste your breath or your tweets. I know who you're thinking of. I don't want to hear it. I've got 1% suspicion at least for everybody else in the last 20 years. Not Ken Griffey Jr. Not Aaron Judge. It's a great day in baseball.
Starting point is 00:05:48 Because here's the thing about cheating. It not only affects the moment you cheat, but then for years and years it stains leagues and other people, like Tim Donaggie. Now everybody's just like, well, Tim Donagy did it. The whole league's on the take. No, Tim Donagy had mobster friends. Not everybody in the NBA is on the take that wears the officiating uniform.
Starting point is 00:06:13 I know your team lost. It must be on the take. It's funny. You only say that when your team loses. Aaron Judge, it's a great day for baseball. Great kid. No ambiguity. Love what I saw.
Starting point is 00:06:28 And here he is after. It's an incredible honor, you know, and getting a chance to be, you know, associated with, you know, one of the Yankee greats, you know, one of baseball's greats, you know, be enshrined with him forever is, you know, it's, you know, it's, words can't describe it, you know, and that's one thing that's so special about the Yankees organization is all the guys that came before us and kind of paved the way and, you know, played the game the right way, did the things the right way, did a lot of great things in this game and getting a lot of, you know, getting a lot of, you know, chance to be, you know, mentioned with those guys now is, I can't even describe it. It's, it's, it's, it's, uh, incredible honor. That's for sure. What a great kid. We are very lucky with our American sports stars. It can be Patrick Mahalms. It can be Aaron Judge. It can be a Mookie Betts. It can be a LeBron James. We're lucky. How would you act if you had a hundred million in your 20s, late 20s, early 30s. Guys are broke on Twitter.
Starting point is 00:07:34 They're all jerks. We are so lucky in American sports that overwhelmingly 99% of our greatest, most gifted, most talented, and richest athletes, and Judge will be the last one of those very soon are easy guys to root for. Good for Aaron Judge. Great day for baseball. Okay. Now let me grumble about something.
Starting point is 00:07:58 That's what I like to do. I'm irascible. Oregon has an offensive coordinator, and he is blaming LeBron James for super teams. All these players now, he says, in college football, they want to join super teams. Okay. Well, one of the advantages of age is hopefully a tad bit of wisdom and experience. In 1975, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the world's most top. talented basketball player said, I'm over Milwaukee. I'm going to go west.
Starting point is 00:08:35 My entire life, dating back to the 60s and 70s, and I don't really remember the 60s, I was too young, but mid-70s, I do. The greatest athletes in all sports, Olympic athletes, they wanted the freedom of choice. John Elway, 1983, I refused to be drafted by the Colts. Eli Manning, 2004, I will not be a charger. So let's just stay. stop that right now. LeBron James wasn't the first star. NBA go back to Spencer Haywood. That's who I grew up with in Seattle in the 70s. The greatest athletes have wanted freedom of options and freedom of choice. Now let's pivot to the super team thing. That bad LeBron, bad, bad LeBron's super team. So that was 2010. He decided, I'm going to go to Miami. You do realize that in 2007,
Starting point is 00:09:31 three years prior, the Celtics created a super team. They went and got Ray Allen and KG All-Stars to play with Paul Pierce, another All-Star. So the Celtics created a team, a three-pronged super team that LeBron looked up and went, I got a Zeldrudez al-Guscus and Larry Hughes and Moe Williams. I can't beat that team. And I know what you're saying. This mythology, by the way, that LeBron ruined the NBA. Every league should be so lucky to have a LeBron James.
Starting point is 00:10:06 Plays hard, plays forever, wins titles. But this mythology, this super team thing is funny. So number one, since the 60s, that's as long as I can remember, right? 71, 72, you know, I'm 7, 8 years old. I can start, you know, I remember watching the Super Bowl in 1972 in a black and white TV, Miami, Washington, Garoia Premium. I can name 90, probably 70% of the starters. Okay.
Starting point is 00:10:30 So since that time, the greatest athletes have wanted power and freedom and leverage and choices. The second thing is LeBron's super team move. There was a precedent. It was called a Celtics in the East. He couldn't beat him. And I know what you're saying. Michael Jordan didn't leave. He had a great coach.
Starting point is 00:10:52 By the way, he nudged the other ones out of the building. And he had a very competent GM. Well, Magic Johnson didn't leave. Yeah, he inherited Kareem, had a legendary owner and franchise, and also, by the way, had a coach fired that he didn't like. So just admit it. There's a chunk of you out there, and maybe it's politics, whatever it is. I don't know. You don't like LeBron.
Starting point is 00:11:21 But the idea that LeBron created super teams, that LeBron created mobility. Now, I do think LeBron and his mom. mobility has made other stars in the league at least have to consider it. But Bradley Beale doesn't go anywhere. Damien Lillard's not going anywhere. Yonis isn't going anywhere. Most of these guys don't want to leave. 75% of stars, if you ask all these pro athletes, unless they have just a terrible coach
Starting point is 00:11:53 or a horrible owner, they all want to get drafted by a team, buy a house, and stay there forever. players don't want to bounce around the country. I didn't want to have to bounce around the country. Sometimes you have to for commerce. But we got to slow down on the LeBron. He created those super teams. You do get that Paul Pierce is really good.
Starting point is 00:12:16 And they made big trades for KG and Ray Allen, who are also really good. You're talking to the Hall of Fame guys. LeBron's like, yeah, I'm going to make a Hall of Fame. I need some help. So he went and got Bosch from Canada. and he went and called Dwayne Wade. It's like, at least now it's three on three.
Starting point is 00:12:33 And I got a good coach and Pat Riley. So if you don't like LeBron, you know, you have the right not to. Don't masquerade this. He created this and he's the only one that wanted to do this. And everybody's following him. That's just not true. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. On Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app.
Starting point is 00:12:56 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
Starting point is 00:13:16 I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Starting point is 00:14:39 Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day but just so y'all know
Starting point is 00:15:02 I mean at this point Mark this is the second episode where we've discussed crack so I'm starting to see that there's a through line We also have AIDS on the table right now so Thank you finishing that sentence
Starting point is 00:15:12 I don't think there's a more important year for black people Really? Yeah for me it's one of the most important years for black people in American history Listen to look back at it On the IHeart Radio app Apple Podcasts
Starting point is 00:15:25 Or wherever you get your podcasts Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardaway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tript Fantine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch.
Starting point is 00:15:58 Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.
Starting point is 00:16:15 Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free, our heart radio app, Search learn the hard way and listen now. You are now entering the No Bull Zone sponsored by Credical Bull. Great rates, none of the Bull.
Starting point is 00:16:35 So good to have you. A lot was made and has been made on Russell Wilson and his struggles in Denver. So there are two quarterbacks in this league that I like appear to like way more than you do. Jimmy Garapolo, who I see is a B-B-minus quarterback, but I think he's got some moxies, some leadership stuff. You can take him on the road against, you know, Aaron Rogers and outplay Aaron Rogers in the fourth quarter. You could play him against Patrick Mahomes. He's not as good as Patrick or Aaron, but he outplayed Patrick Mahomes for three quarters. He outplayed Aaron last year in the fourth quarter. I don't think he's great. I think he's a B to a B minus quarterback.
Starting point is 00:17:11 But there is something about him. He's not Kirk Cousins. He doesn't shrink. He's just limited. There's a big difference. And the other one is Russell Wilson, who I view as like an A-minus quarterback. He doesn't throw it like Mahomes or Herbert or, you know, I don't think he's Josh Allen or Bray. But I think he's a minus. So those are the two that I like way more than you. But is it possible? I'm not saying probable.
Starting point is 00:17:33 Is it possible that Nick Wright is right about him? Here's Nick. They are married to this guy who has given us no indications whatsoever over the last, forget 12 quarters, over the last 12 months, that he's still an above average NFL quarterback. But he's going to be 34. he's undersized, he won't run the ball anymore, he doesn't seem that comfortable, and all of a sudden, Colin,
Starting point is 00:18:03 doesn't it seem like maybe some of the offensive line troubles follow Russell Wilson around? Listen, seven years ago, he was unbelievable, but he's not that player anymore. So, yeah, they're going to be patient. He's going to be their quarterback this year and next year in the year after. But I think you can rip up your AFC West Broncos
Starting point is 00:18:21 division winner ticket if you haven't already. Now, I do believe that hyper-mobile quarterbacks age very fast. Cam Newton, MVP, not as good, over. Big Ben declined very fast. A lot of hits moving around. Michael Vic, I do think hyper-mobile quarterbacks age faster than a Jared Goff sitting in the pocket slinging it or a Brady sitting in the pocket slinging it or a Stafford sitting in the pocket slinging it. Matt Ryan is gradually, gradually aging.
Starting point is 00:18:54 So is it possible that Russell Wilson has, he's starting to fall off a cliff? Because that's the assertion by everybody else. So I, in my arguments, I tend to be unemotional. Probably a fault at sometimes, but I don't really care about the emotion of it. I tell people all the time. The answer is always easy to find. Just take the emotion out of it. So let's just find his best three year stretch as a pro.
Starting point is 00:19:20 When is Russell Wilson's best three year stretch as a pro? a pro. We looked it up this morning. 2018, 2019, 2020. Okay, that's his best three-year stretch. So I'm supposed to believe now that a quarterback that
Starting point is 00:19:38 A has never been hit a lot. He doesn't get hit. He's not Cammer Big Ben. He's not that size. He doesn't get hit a lot and that is obsessed with his body and nutrition, pliometrics, and taken care of
Starting point is 00:19:54 himself, literally fell off a cliff from 18 months ago. Even last year after the injury was good. So it comes down to this. 18 months ago, he just ended this unbelievable three-year stretch. It's not been hit a lot in the last 18 months. And, I mean, think about this. I mean, just you start, you want me to believe instead of what I do believe, you want me to believe 18 months removed from an obsessed body guy who doesn't get hit a lot has fallen off a cliff
Starting point is 00:20:32 or that Nathaniel Hackett is completely over his skis as a head coach, that he got a job because he was Aaron Rogers buddy. By the way, Adam Gase got a job because he was Peyton Manning's buddy. It happens. These big star quarterbacks have major influence. Guys will call Peyton Manning. They'll call Aaron Rogers. Hey, what do you think? Oh, I love him. And we found out later Aaron played darts with him, drank beer, and he made him laugh. Or whatever, maybe it was bourbon. So that's why he defend him. This is not Big Ben, who never took care of himself in the offseason,
Starting point is 00:21:06 never really cared about the nutritional stuff, but that was not Big Ben. And he took a lot more hits because he was a bigger target. Or Cam Newton, who I don't know if he took care of himself in the off season, but I mean, Cam Newton had a lot of injuries in his career, right? I mean, he once got hurt badly his shoulder, I think it was, because he tackled somebody. I got a guy that never gets hit. 18 months ago ended a great three-year stretch, and now I'm supposed to believe with a rookie head coach
Starting point is 00:21:32 who can't figure out situational football, it's Russell's issue. I don't think it is. Nick Wright, here is Nick wrong. That's my guess. J-Mack with the news. Turn on the news. This is the Herd Line News.
Starting point is 00:21:48 Let's get started with the San Francisco 49er, Jimmy Garoppolo, Trey Lance. The drama never ends, even though, is done for the season. Steve Young is saying, I want an end to this Lance versus Garoppola feud because I was once a starting quarterback. I'm in the Hall of Fame. Stop the madness. Here's what Steve Young said. We don't need camps of people. I'm with Jimmy. I'm with Trey. Like, stop. There's a tough league and you do move on. And when you move on, you move on, we get over that. But when you got their red and gold on, stop. We're in it. Together.
Starting point is 00:22:20 We don't need to find the mitigating circumstances. It's not about camps. No, we got to stop that. The seasons are going to slide by as we argue about stupid stuff. Like, come on, let's go. Okay, let me disagree. Don't blame fans and media
Starting point is 00:22:34 because you had a quarterback that got you to the Super Bowl and you gave up first three picks to get him. This is Shinnahan's fault. This is all on Shannahan. Forget the fault for a second. What I'm saying is,
Starting point is 00:22:44 you created a dynamic that begged to be discussed. Right. Like, I still don't know if Trey Lans would be good. I thought out of college would be good. And now he's hurt.
Starting point is 00:22:54 But when you have a quarterback and the franchise doesn't win without him and he's not that old, and you draft another guy and gave up three firsts, it's going to get discussed on Sports Talk Radio in San Francisco and around the country. Sorry, Steve Young. People are going to argue about this. Like that's how sports works. Fans. Next up, Colin, the Chargers injury issues. Oh, my gosh.
Starting point is 00:23:16 Edge rusher, Joey Bosa left with a groin injury. Brutal. He's on IR. He's out at least a month. Yeah, no, no. He'll be back in November. Yeah, yeah. He's out at least four games for sure.
Starting point is 00:23:26 But Colin, have you seen this injury list? Brutal. So Herbert's dealing with the ribs. Keenan Allen, Hammy. Jalen Guyton, like their fourth receiver, torn ACL. Ray Sean Slater, the biceps, done for the year. Corey Lindley, one of the top centers in the league. He's like a top 10 center in the league.
Starting point is 00:23:41 Knee injury. Of course, Bosa, and now J.C. Jackson, who's coming off surgery. Okay. And it's like, Colin, that is literally six of their best nine players. So last year, it was the Ravens who fell apart. Yeah. And yet, Lamar Jackson and John Harbaugh, an A coach and an A quarterback, they were the number one seed before Lamar got hurt.
Starting point is 00:24:03 The year before it was the Niners that fell apart physically. And as long as Garoppolo was standing, they were a viable team. So the question here is, it's a fact. If you fall apart physically and have an A quarterback, and they do, you will survive unless you don't have at least a B coach. Or you turn in a gutless performance against the Houston Texans on the road. It's the NFL. You have bad Sundays.
Starting point is 00:24:28 And they fall to one in three? Well, I'm just saying we've seen, we have a precedent. Last year, Baltimore fell apart like this. But because they have a great coach, an A coach, and an A quarterback, they survived it until Lamar got hurt. We've seen the Niners deal with major injuries. But they have an A coach, and I would argue a B quarterback, so they kind of survive. So we know Herbert's a great quarterback. Nobody disputes that.
Starting point is 00:24:52 they should be able to win football games. Not all of them, despite that. Can we do odds to be the next Chargers quarterback on Monday if the Chargers lose? Next Chargers coach, I'm sorry. Well, I think you have to. We said. Okay. The NFL added playoff teams and the best quarterback didn't get in.
Starting point is 00:25:13 The best quarterback you can't have for two years in a row, the best quarterback in the league not making the playoffs. Sean Payton is sitting out there, a quarterback whisperer. So I think the heat is on Brandon Staley. By the way, a lot of these veteran players in the league are not all into this analytics stuff. When you go analytics, you have to win. You and I have talked about this. Analytics work in hockey, basketball, and baseball, because there's a game tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:25:43 So you can experiment during an NBA season. I mean, the Boston Celtics had a new coach. They were awful until January. You can do that in the NBA. But in the NFL, you go on a three-game losing streak, the locker room splits. So that's the issue. Analytics are much tougher because baseball, basketball, give you time to experiment with analytics. You can lose a game, and the locker room doesn't go, this stuff sucks.
Starting point is 00:26:06 You start losing football games with Justin Herbert on this analytic stuff, and you start losing guys fast because there's a scarcity of games, and you've got to win about 70% of them to 65% of them. The analytics guys are going to stick to what got them there. For instance, you're at the blackjack table just because you lose five hands in a row playing the correct way. But you can't be fired playing black check. You can just go broke. You can run out of money.
Starting point is 00:26:28 All right. Next up, Devante Adams, 10 catches for a buck 41 in his first start with the Raiders. But he's been a ghost the last two games. Total non-factor. I mean, he couldn't get loose against Tennessee, which has one of the worst secondaries in the league. But Devante Adams, hey, no worries, man. He's not stressing at all about the situation. All the Green Bay people will definitely still be on that.
Starting point is 00:26:47 and talk about, you know, try to compare the stats and all of that, but we're not doing this thing for stats at the end of the day. And obviously, we played professional ball together, Aaron and I longer than what me and Derek have. So, you know, we found times to, you know, and it kind of was a little bit more gradual than what this was. You know, we jumped straight into the fire, had a few one-on-one opportunities in the first week and got 17 targets, so now people are changing that up, obviously, and, you know, we've got to change some stuff up, too.
Starting point is 00:27:13 Now, their own three, in fairness to the Raiders, three close losses. This is not a bad team. You know how we talk about close games flip year to year? They were seven and two in one score of games last year. That's right. This year, 0 and 3. And now Devante Adams going up against Patrick Sertane,
Starting point is 00:27:31 who looks like one of the better young cornerbacks in the league. Denver's got a couple of corners I like. I'm on Denver this weekend, huh? I know the Raiders are a sharp pick. No, Denver's got George Payton, their GM sharp. They have more than just Patrick Sartan. They have some really good corners. Gregory and Chubb off the edge against that Raiders offensive line.
Starting point is 00:27:49 DJ Jones Interior lineman against that Raider O line? I like Denver too. I kind of like Denver. J. Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Ly news. By the way, I am not anti-analytics, but analytics in football, every analytic comprises something different.
Starting point is 00:28:08 In baseball, now analytics say, swing for the fence, strikeouts don't matter, just don't hit ground balls, right? analytics and basketball, you know, layups or threes, no mid-range jumpers. In the NFL, analytics are a lot of go-for-it-on-forth-down. Again, I am for aggressive coaching. But analytics are, there's an emotional, and the analytic people in football, they just don't want to acknowledge this. You got 17 games now. That analytic stuff goes sideways, back-to-back weeks,
Starting point is 00:28:38 and a lot of guys in that locker room are peeling off in your belief system. It doesn't work that way in baseball. Over time, analytics work in baseball. Over time, they work in basketball. Over time, they do work in football, but you won't get time because owners aren't going to give you two years to lose in analytic games. The Chargers have to start winning despite the injuries. So here's the elephant in the room. So Tua plays, they think, tonight.
Starting point is 00:29:02 He's got back and ankle injuries, back and ankle reportedly. Did not limited practice yesterday. I suspect he'll play tonight, but he's been. banged up. I'm just going to throw this out there. And if you're not ready to hear it, I apologize, but I can't wait for you to be ready to hear this. He has back and ankle injuries already in week three.
Starting point is 00:29:25 He took 40 snaps. He only threw it 18 times. He was sacked once. And he's got back and ankle injuries. Josh Allen took 92 snaps. He threw it 63 times. He was sacked four times. He ran it eight times.
Starting point is 00:29:41 He was hit a leg of. 11 times. Three words. Ready to go. Tua. 40 snaps sacked once. Back and ankle injuries. He's small. He has a history at Bama in Miami of getting hurt. You got to be available. Didn't know his love far. Eli Manning could drive me crazy. From the goat to the Kirk Cousins of the NFL. You've got to be available. And so it's the elephant in the room is that he's off to a great start, but like tonight, they say he probably plays. But I'm watching that game last week. He got popped one time, one time.
Starting point is 00:30:24 Kyler Murray last year at the end of the year, playoff game refused to run. He's small. Right? And so, you know, like tonight, think about Joe Burrell. Joe Burrell's been sacked. I think we looked this morning more than any quarterback in the league. He's coming off a major surgery where they took
Starting point is 00:30:44 something out of his body seven weeks ago, eight weeks ago. Tonight, three words. Ready to ball. I know it's the elephant. Nobody wants to talk about it. But I'm sitting there. This is what, you know, is, is, is, is, do you think Tua going to be this? Do you think Tua last 10 years in this league?
Starting point is 00:31:01 Because Josh Allen will. Justin Herbert will. Tom Brady, we're on 20. This is the thing about Tua that I worry about. I think he's a very accurate thrower. I think he's a great kid. I think he's great at the microphone. but beyond that, he got popped once and he's all banged up.
Starting point is 00:31:19 I mean, Josh Allen, 92 snaps, 63 throws, sacked four times, hit 11 times, ran eight times, meaning he's tackled another eight. He was exhausted, but we don't have him, you know, limited participant, hurt, not sure if he's going to play. It matters. You know, say what you want about a lot of these quarterbacks in the league you don't love. They're always available.
Starting point is 00:31:41 Like that is, listen, If Garoppolo was more available, it wouldn't make him more talented. But if Garoppolo was always available and never hurt, they probably don't trade three first round picks for him. I don't believe they do. I think they may draft another quarterback. They're not giving up the farm for half a decade. You know, injuries are a huge deal.
Starting point is 00:32:03 All right, we're around the corner of Greg Bedard. Man, the Patriot situation is not getting better. We'll talk about that. Also top of the hour, Greg Kossel. Starting point is 00:34:59 To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed cracks. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:35:21 Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Starting point is 00:36:42 Go to tankless, made simple.com. Tankless made simple.com. He's the founder, the director, Boston SportsJournal.com. Patriots podcast, Greg Bedard. He had said, before the season, this was not going to be pretty. Your article this week details Belichick, Patricia Joe, Judge, are fighting to win a battle, but losing a war. Explain that to our audience, if you could, Greg.
Starting point is 00:37:10 Yeah, so what happened, you know, the first two weeks the Patriots did what they had to do, especially against the Steelers to get a win against Mitch Chubisky. They didn't have to do much on offense. So they featured a wide receiver known as Little Jordan Humphrey, who is a, you know, big receiver. He's sort of an in-between tight-end wide receiver. And they did that because they thought he would give them an advantage blocking and in the running game. And in that game, that worked out. And then suddenly against the Ravens, who score 30 points, you know, just waking up.
Starting point is 00:37:40 in the morning. The Patriots decided to put little Jordan Humphrey on the field for 54 snaps and Kendrick Bourne for 18. Mind you, Jacoby Myers, their best receiver, was out this week. And really, when you look at it, those decisions, the Patriots are trying to, you know, they're trying to gain five yards instead of three by getting that advantage there instead of being explosive. And it's just these are the types of decisions you get when defensive coaches are in charge of offense. Yeah, the seven lowest rated passer ratings in the league. That's where. Yeah. We lost you for a second, Greg. We lost you for a second. I want to pivot to something. Six of the seven lowest passer ratings in the league have defensive head coaches. And I think to your
Starting point is 00:38:30 point about Belichick and Patricia, there's a sensibility. Seth Wickersham was on our show a couple days ago. And he detailed a story when he was writing his book on the Patriots where Belichick went in on this thing called it was a gator offense and a gator package. And Wickersham took it to Brady. And Brady said to him, I don't know, well, what is that? He goes, well, those are defensive coaches. That's what they would call it. That's not what it's really called in offense. And so my passerating stat, it's detailing what you're saying, Greg, which is this staff without Brady and McDaniel don't have a feel for offense, right? Right. And they're falling behind other teams. I mean, when you look at the league,
Starting point is 00:39:10 the top efficiency teams and passer, you know, these are teams that Baltimore, Jacksonville, Miami, Philadelphia, Buffalo, you could say four out of the five are contenders. You know, the Patriots are 22nd. And in running efficiency, where the Patriots lead the league in efficiency, they're there with the Browns, the Vikings, the Cowboys, the Lions, and the Bears. I mean, it just shows you. you need to be efficient in the passing game to really be a good team in this league. You know, I said before the season, I thought this is going to be ugly, and I do think Kraft and Belichick may have a conversation at years end.
Starting point is 00:39:49 Be a consultant. You don't want to do this. And maybe Belichick initiates it. Now, I'm just, that's a hypothetical. But if they were a 6 and 11 team, is there a chance Bill's like, you know what, I don't see much light at the end of the tunnel? I think it depends on how it looks, Colin. I mean, you know, in what kind of shape Mac Jones is in.
Starting point is 00:40:09 Look, they've played three games. He has two X-rays after games and one win so far. And who knows how long he's going to be out with this high ankle sprain. You know, if they sort of ascend towards the end of the season, look, they have a part of the schedule coming up after Green Bay this weekend where they should go six and out. And if they can get to, you know, seven and three and set up the final stage, We'll see how things looked at.
Starting point is 00:40:35 So I want to ask you about Josh McDaniels. We know this to be true. Some people are built to be great vice presidents. Some coaches are just fantastic coordinators. I pick the Raiders for fourth, but I think he's going to work in Las Vegas. I really do. And I think it's clear, Greg, Patriots miss him. They miss his understanding, his sensibility, his touch.
Starting point is 00:40:59 I mean, I think it's clear that Mack Jones has regressed without him. what do you make of the O and three start? What do you make of the owner already meeting with him? Now, we thought he was too arrogant in Denver, right? He was too cocky and too arrogant. He seems to have stepped back a little in that space. But what do you make of the O and three start and the owner already having a private meeting with him? As far as I know about Mark Davis, I think that's the norm for him that he does meet with coaches right after the games.
Starting point is 00:41:26 I don't know that to be true. I don't cover the team every day. Now, I have watched the Raiders film every week. to see what McDaniels is up to. And on film, that's a good football team. I mean, you know, they've lost every game by one score. They are not making the crucial plays that they need to make to win gains. That's obvious.
Starting point is 00:41:44 But I don't think that they're far away. That's a talented team. They're figuring out some things on the offensive line. The defense had a lot of issues with the Titans this past weekend. But, you know, they really need to get that one win. If they can get that one win, you know, I think they're right back in that. thing. Yeah, we've talked about this yesterday. There's a couple
Starting point is 00:42:06 of plays away from making it work. So you've seen Miami multiple times covering the Patriots. And they've always had a little bit of a little bit, there's a jinks thing when you put New England down in Miami, even average teams. I don't think
Starting point is 00:42:24 this team in Miami personnel-wise is average. I do believe Buffalo going forward is going to control this division and control Belichick. He can't force punts with Josh Allen. Miami's the interesting one. I don't trust the Jets. I do trust the bills.
Starting point is 00:42:39 Miami's the team that keeps them out of the playoffs. So you watch this year's matchup with the new coach, the genius offensive coach and the genius defensive coach Belichick. What was your takeaway flying home after that game? I mean, it was a knockout for McDaniel. I mean, it just his schemes, how he sets up to Colin, it just shows you the value of really good. offensive coaching in this league and also about talent. I mean, we can have this whole argument about
Starting point is 00:43:07 Mac Jones. Is he talented enough? You know, is Belichick falling behind the times? But look, if you give a quarterback that you can win with, and I put Tua and Mac sort of in the same category, you can win with them, but you A, need to support them with really good coaching. Two, you need to support them with really good talent. And you could say Tua has both of those things. Right. Mac Jones doesn't. I mean, if you look at the first. interception against Baltimore where everybody's like, oh, you know, look at Mac Jones. What's he doing throwing there? They ran a play action off of stretch wide zone there where they hadn't run that run concept the entire time. They barely run it this season. So guess what happens?
Starting point is 00:43:48 The Ravens linebackers don't even wait for Mac Jones to finish with the run fake. They're already in their drop. If you have a good offensive coordinator, that linebacker's not supposed to be there. But Matt Patricia did not set up that play. He put Mac Jones. as a deficit, whereas Tua, everything that they are doing, there's a reason for it. I want to finish here to Brady. You know, you had a great opportunity. Not only do you watch Brady's games, but Greg, you're around him. You're an observer. You see the body language. You could tell when he was, you know, sometimes a little snarky with the media, the deflategate stuff. So this year, I mean, listen, there's a bit of a marriage crisis. It's uncomfortable to
Starting point is 00:44:32 talk about, but it's been all over the gossip columns and all over the reporting, right? And there's been multiple reports. He just doesn't look the same, feel the same. What do you kind of make of, I do feel it's his last year. I've said years ago, I'm not going to guess. Who knows with Brady? He's so willful. But what do you kind of make with what's happening, even if it's Giselle and Brady,
Starting point is 00:44:54 the crisis, is it predictable? Could you have seen this happening? No, because, you know, every season. in when even when Tom was here, when he started training camp, he looked like he was 35 years old. He looked tan, he looked, you know, he looked filled out. He looked unbelievable. This year, Colin, when I saw him during training camp and, you know,
Starting point is 00:45:16 when he came back, I didn't recognize that guy. He looked 45 years old where that's not the way he normally starts season. And then on the field, they have a lot of injury issues and things like that. It looks like the 2019 Patriots Brady, where he's just things aren't going. the way he wants it. He's a perfectionist and he's frustrated. Yeah, no, that's a really good point. It does feel like that year. And by the way, that year
Starting point is 00:45:40 we later discovered Greg, he'd already made up his mind. He was leaving. I think, you know what I mean? So I do think, Brady's not a great actor. Maybe he is on Instagram, but you get kind of an authentic. You noticed in 2019, he was
Starting point is 00:45:56 lack of a better word, a little pissy. He was just not, he was barking. He was checked out. Yep. Yep. And I think you're right. feel a little bit of that with Tom this year. It happens. It happens to all of us. All right. Boston Sportsjournal.com. He's got a great breakdown. Judge Belichick, Matt, Patricia.
Starting point is 00:46:15 Greg is always appreciate you stopping by. Anytime. Thanks to call. You bet. You know, I was thinking about this is that the New England Patriots are the great dynasty of my life. And the Jacksonville Jaguars are the most forgettable friend. I mean, they tarped the upper deck, right? Now, the Raiders did that for years in Oakland, but they're not forgettable.
Starting point is 00:46:37 The Raiders have always been an iconic brand. But it is interesting. My wife always says, as a parent, you can be a great example or a horrible warning to your kids. Both are effective. You know, kids, often kids, I'm not going to be my mom or dad doing this or great example or horrible warning. So the Patriots, the great down.
Starting point is 00:47:02 dynasty of my life, and the Jaguars, forgettable, actually prove a couple things. Number one, New England proves as great as your coach is. You can have the best coach in the league, an A coach. He's completely limited if he doesn't have a great quarterback. And Mack Jones is not a great quarterback. Belichick now is a 500 coach. So that's just something to always think about. The second thing, Jacksonville proves, no matter how gifted your quarterback is,
Starting point is 00:47:32 Trevor Lawrence, you get him a mess at head coach, he can't overcome it. So the difference is this. Very hard to annually win Super Bowls unless you have an A quarterback. You also have to have at least a B head coach. So when you're a New York giant fan and you're arguing for Daniel Jones, stop it. Now, Day Bowl may become a B or a A, but you can't be taken serious. in this league. Jacksonville proves you got to get the coach at least mostly right. It didn't have to be perfect. Mike McCarthy won a Super Bowl. Doesn't have to be perfect.
Starting point is 00:48:15 But if the coach is a B, the quarterback's got to be an A. Gough got to a Super Bowl with McVeigh. Garapelow got to with Kyle Shanahan. So when you're talking, we don't even know if Dable can coach. But we know that Daniel Jones is not an A. And we know that the quarterback is about a 70-30 split in importance. as good as Andy Reid is. He was losing their first round with Alex Smith. He's now getting championships every year with Mahomes. So it's a 70-30 quarterback more important than coach. Burrow and Taylor last year with Cincinnati.
Starting point is 00:48:45 That's right. We think Zach Taylor's a good beat coach. We don't think he's an A yet. By the way, the great stat from Bedard, if anybody missed that, Mac Jones has played three games. He has one win and two X-rays after games on injuries. That's brutal. It is.
Starting point is 00:48:59 He can't stay healthy. Well, here's the other thing is that Mac Jones is struggling to stay healthy, Tua struggles to stay healthy. Neither's overly mobile. Interesting. So when you say, oh, Lamar's hurt. I worry about the running quarterback. It's Mack Jones that's getting dinged up. It's Tua in his career that's getting dinged. They don't run around. Well, Trey Lance as well, just got suffered. Kind of a freak injury there with the angle. Well, we talked about this earlier. You get hurt all the time.
Starting point is 00:49:25 Peyton Manning had four neck surgeries. Tom Brady missed a year because somebody lunged at his knees. Dack Prescott's out now because he banged Russell Wilson last year. banged a thumb and a helmet. Jack Prescott. Yeah, you can't, you can't. This whole thing about Lamar, while he runs around, he can get hurt.
Starting point is 00:49:41 Guys, he's been playing like four or five years. He's been hurt once. I mean, like, come on. Is he great? Yeah. Is he an A? Yeah. If you have an A, sign them.
Starting point is 00:49:50 I mean, that's the rule. You got an A, figure out the money, sign him. Usually early. Hour two next. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
