Well, I know you were watching, J-Mack. Your beloved Dallas Mavericks. Actually, it's one of those regular seasons of NBA games that was a little bit of a showcase. The players knew they were on TV, and they knew everybody was watching because Clay Thompson, the former warrior Great, came back. now a member of the Mavericks. So everybody was watching. You could see the energy and the effort level of the players was through the roof.

It was one of those nights where the kids were around. And I was like, guys, look at this matchup. Oh my gosh. The Mabs are going off. They're like, Dad, I thought we rooted for Steph Curry. I'm like, oh, we can root for both. It was a great night of basketball. Yeah. Warriors continue.

They're nine and two, and they beat the Mavericks. But it was about Clay Thompson. Clay Thompson came back. They gave fans the Clay Thompson hat. He's a legendary boater. He played well. They had a video. It was wonderful.

It was sweet. Romanticizing. Very special night. And now everybody can go their own way. Warriors are better without him. Dallas is better with him. Trees do not grow to the sky. You have to factor in age, contract, and injuries with older players.

Get out of this whole Warriors owed him anything. Have you ever run a business? That's not how it works. What can you deliver now if you're a lot? a top executive or a top athlete. I'm not paying you for seven years ago. They treated him well. They paid him $260 million. It's a

world-class organization. You don't give out lifetime achievement contracts. They do that in Hollywood, and it's usually cringy. Nobody was disrespected here. Again, there's salary caps. It's grown-ups. I think what happened, and Clay

was getting very streaky, he was sort of becoming a ghost in the playoffs, and Offensively, he used to be a great player, but there's so many injuries, he became a little bit of a, a little bit of a liability, sometimes not a little bit. And the warrior said, listen, we're going to offer you a role, reduced salary, it'll be a role, and he didn't like the offer. And I have no problem with the warriors offering them a reduced role and reduced salary. And I have no problem with Clay Thompson saying, no, Mab's going to pay me more and need me more. That's called sports.

San Antonio, Tony Parker, Manu Genoobli, accepted. roles as they age. And here comes Kauai Leonard. And we're getting younger. And we have to. And they accepted their roles. Clay Thompson's like, I'm not going to. I've been at the top of the mountain here. I was the number one, two garden a league for a long time. We got the name Splash Brothers, probably the best back court ever. Certainly in the Jerry West Gale Goodrich class. It was a great. And he deserved all of it. And they paid him and they treated him well. But he didn't like his role. And I think

what is this, I've seen this with guys. A lot of us guys collected baseball cards as kids. You know, and then we got girlfriends and grew up. But a lot of you guys never ever lose that childhood devotion to your athletes. They move on. It's a business. Why is everybody in the NBA chasing the Boston Celtics? They moved off KG and Paul Pierce.

They got a bunch of picks, and those picks became Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown. That's why everybody's chasing them. because they hit on two picks and then they find Derek White, go get him somewhere and pour Zingas and make moves, and now they're easily the best team in the NBA. So it's 2024. Sports is an incredibly cold business, and that's okay. Everybody knows it is. Nobody's losing sleep.

That doesn't mean last night wasn't cool, wasn't special. I felt the Warriors could have treated this a lot of different ways, but they wanted to make sure. Look at the crowd. It's great. they all got Clay hats. Clay meant a lot to these people. But you know what means more now? The future.

And signing him to a long deal, a lifetime achievement contract, that paralyzes franchises for a decade. And you know what? I think Clay is going to be great in Dallas. They need a catch-and-shoe guy. They got Kyrie and Luca. Those guys always have the ball in their hands. Clay is perfect in Dallas.

He's a catch-and-shoot guy. You can give him the ball with three seconds on the clock. Boom, hits a three. But he was appreciative. I think it meant a lot to the Warriors. It meant a ton to the fans. And here was a really nice guy after. It was a really cool experience.

I appreciate the fans very much. The captain's hat ended up being a great touch. So I'm such a passionate boulder. And I saw a lot of familiar face in the crowd. That was a warm-hearted feeling. So it was really cool to see the fans. their gratitude towards myself and something I will never take for granted. Wonderful guy, wonderful moment, terrific night, touched a lot of people,

and this is a nice bow on the present. Everybody is better served. Frankly, Clay Thompson is better served, not being a warrior. He'll be a much more important player on a warrior team that is basically now Steph Draymond, Wiggins, and kids. It is a deep roster. They play a ton of guys. They play a bunch of minutes.

They're long. They're athletic. Steph, still elite. Dremont, what he does, still elite. Wiggins, they're stuck with a contract. They just didn't want to be stuck with two contracts. Great night. Way to go, Clay.

All right. So the Bears moved off yesterday. Offensive coordinator, Shane Waldron. So now the stories trickle out. Bears players went to the head coach and the GM. Matt Iber Fluse, Ryan Poles. And they said, get Shane out of here. Some of the older players, veteran players, wanted to bench Caleb Williams for his backup.

Benching Caleb Williams is not the solution. Fixing him as the solution. Veteran pro athletes don't have any patience because, they see the end of their careers coming and the end of their contracts. It's why players should play, not coaching GM. Look at LeBron's teams when he leaves. They're a mess. Teams let him GM.

Older players have agendas, their contracts, their stats, and their careers. I mean, have you seen what the New York Jets look like? They handed too much power to Aaron Rogers, and what was Aaron doing as an older player, seeking familiarity and seeking comfort? He didn't care about the Jets plans. He cared about Aaron Rogers. And, you know, if I was older broadcaster, of course, I'm still so young now, maybe that's what I'd care about.

But, I mean, you can't lose patience on this. First of all, young quarterbacks is a roller coaster ride. Let's just take a look at Bo Nix. Remember how bad Bo Nix was in the first two starts? You guys were all bailing on him. Colin, you don't know what you're talking about. This guy's no good. You're just listening to Sean Payton, Sean Payton, Sean Payton, you text, and your buddies.

I'm like, no, he's a rookie. on a pretty average roster with one or maybe two really good offensive linemen. Bo Nicks, first two weeks. No touchdowns, four turnovers, and a 47 passer rating. Should you bench him? No. Shane Waldron's not an elite coach. Bears are not an elite organization.

Caleb Williams is a rookie. This was going to be bumpy. I'll give you a great example. We love C.J. Stroud. C.J. Stroud last year had a three-game stretch. C.J. Stroud. Y'all love him. I do. Three-game stretch.

57% completion rate. You remember that? And by the way, he's had a couple of stinkers this year. And that's the guy we love. With a great left tackle, great weapons. Love his coach. Love his coordinator. I mean, we love everything he's around. He had a month last year, no good. And so Caleb's got eight games left, and the bears are four and five.

and I went on this show, we got the audio somewhere, and I predicted they'd be, I kept asking, what if they're a seven-win team, but you feel better about Caleb than Justin Fields? And my guess, if you look at their schedule, they're going to be a seven-win team. There are some wins in there, but they're going to be tough. Green Bay at home, Minnesota at home, they need to get at least one win there. But at Detroit, at San Francisco, at Minnesota, that could be a three-game skid. They get Detroit and Seattle at home, go to Green Bay. I think they got about three more wins in them.

and that's about where they should be. I mean, nobody thought, none of you who are Bears fans or not Bears fans, you didn't think Iber Flus and Shane Waldron were the Andy Reed and Spags of the next generation. Now, Washington, in my opinion, did it the right way. They cleaned house. They said, we're going to get this young quarterback, Jaden Daniels, new coach, new coordinator, new owner, new GM. Everything was new. We're all in the same timeline.

Chicago made a choice. You and I knew probably wasn't going to work. Iber Fluse was on the hot seat week one. In preseason, we were already trying to kind of pick apart what he was. So they decided because the bears are cheap and don't have great vision, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Let's just keep everybody, yeah, we'll just change the coordinator. Same president, same owner, same coach, same Washington to the opposite.

It's been a flying success. Bears, we all. know this isn't going to work. We all knew it at the time. And you also have Iber Fluse is just coaching to save his job. Caleb's just trying to get better. So they have different visions right now. Iber Fluse, urgency. Caleb, patience, trying to get better every week, every pass, every series. So this is take a deep breath time. The solution is not listening. Thankfully, the Bears didn't. It's not listening to older players. They're loyal to their contracts.

They're loyal to their careers. Aaron to the New York Jets is a great example. He sought comfort. He sought familiarity. He didn't care about the Jets' long-term plans. You could screw this kid up if you sit him. Long, long runway here. I mean, we just moved the jet.

It's doing a U-S turn right now. It's just trying to get on the runway. It's not even on the runway yet. So J-Mack, Josh McDendale. Daniel's shown up in studio this hour. I saw something this morning that made me laugh with the Dallas Cowboys. It's not going to be a cowboy topic. Please don't turn the channel.

It is not going to be a Cowboy topic. Didn't you think the Cowboys and the Jets were two of the more interesting teams starting the season and now both of them are headed toward Top Team? I didn't think the Jets were. No, interesting, I said. Not great. Interesting. I think Aaron's complex.

But you know what's funny in our show, we get, our management will give us a couple times during the football season. They'll give us research on what teams are hot, what players are hot, and we just got some of that. Oh. Aaron Rogers is no longer popular. I like how you say us. I haven't seen that data. I haven't seen that data. Slide that

my way. Aaron Rogers, nobody cares. They want to talk about Lamar and Josh Allen, and they want to talk about Mahalms. The New York Giants test better than the New York Jets. When you haven't made the playoffs in over a decade, come on. No. No,

created equal. You know that. All owners are not created equal. I always thought Robert Kraft was a great owner. Stayed away. Let the football people do the football stuff. Has a son that can kind of keep him up on cultural trends and tech and all that stuff. And maybe once a decade, that owner says, hey, I'm going to make a move on this. We're keeping Brady. We're moving off Garoplo, which by the way was the right move. Belichick is a great coach. Not great with personnel. It was the right move. Garopold. was never going to replace Tom and be close to Tom. Okay. So, but I saw this.

The Niners just paid $92 million and gave a five-year extension to a cornerback. Diomador, Lenore, good player, gotten better. Gotten really good, last couple years, baller. So that means the Niners now are paying a fortune to Nick Mosa, Brandon Ayuk, Fred Warner, Javon Hargrove, George Kittle, Trent Williams, Debo, Samuel, Christian McCaffrey, another corner. They just signed this corner. And yet the Cowboys, with only two great players,

could not afford Derek Henry at $8 million last year at the trade deadline. It's Jerry Jones refusal to admit he should be nowhere near the general manager role. He doesn't know what he's doing. It's a bad, uneven roster. It's not just that DAC is wildly overpaid. They got two great players. Micah, who's good, but not Miles Gaird or T.J. Watt. and C.D. Lamb, who's exceptional.

Zach Martin, Dack are good players at this point. I mean, look at the Philadelphia Eagles. And they pay their quarterback. The Niners don't. J. Liners don't. J.L.Hertz makes $255 million. A.J. Brown. Three of their offensive linemen, eat. Dallas Goddard, Bryce Huff, Darius Slay, Sequan, they pay a running back of fortune.

And they're fine. They're not having to move pieces at the trade deadline. They are active. usually at trade deadline. They're active in the offseason. Not the Cowboys. Kansas City Chiefs. They just added D-Hop. They add pieces every year. They pay Patrick Mohorm's $450 million. They pay Chris Jones. They pay Joe Tooney, Creed Humphrey, Travis Kelsey. They're going to pay $26 million of DeAndre Hopkins. And by the way, the Chiefs make moves every year to go get guys. and they're not shopping the bargain basement.

Right? And the Cowboys didn't make a move of the trade deadline, and it didn't make a move in the off-season. And they had an okay draft. So we all know owners aren't equal. The ideal owner, you don't see him much, maybe once a decade, he has to step in and go, I'm keeping this guy or I'm keeping this coach.

Once a decade. He does a new radio hits. He's not front and center. He doesn't believe he knows more football than a Belichack or a Vrable or a Mike McCarthy. I mean, just look at the Niners. Their Niners are now paying multiple receivers. They're paying multiple corners, multiple linebackers, positions you don't even want to pay. They're paying tight ends, running backs.

And they're like, yeah, let's pay another corner. And by the way, they'll pay their safety Hufunga in about a year or two. They'll pay him too. Cowboys, out of money. There's got to be a Swiss bank that can make a deal for Jerry. Here's J-Mack with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news.

This is the herd line news. Yeah, spicy matchup between the Steelers and the Ravens this weekend. Very interesting. You know, Deonti Johnson is a former stealer, then he had a pit stop in Carolina, and now he's with the Ravens. It sounds like Mike Tomlin is not really concerned about this new, weapon in Baltimore. To be honest, which I hadn't thought a lot about it.

He's not on a lot of their video, and so, you know, at this stage of the week, I don't know that I've weighed, you know, what he might mean to the matchup. They got more significant pieces with larger roles that are occupying my attention at this part of the week. Best quote in the NFL, he's right. He's not wrong. Yeah. Lamar Jackson. Interesting game. I think I like Baltimore, but I have missed on Pittsburgh all year long.

I finally, finally in a big game last week, said, I'm going to go with the Steelers. The Steelers, I will say this. I admitted I was wrong on the Steelers. I went and looked at some Russell Wilson numbers this morning. Oh, boy. That's the three games, right? Well, yeah, that's a pretty good sample size.

Three games. You don't think three games, you can kind of tell if a guy's got it or not? I mean, Joe Flacco, by the third quarter of his first start, we both went, it's over. Yeah, he doesn't have it anymore. Third quarter first start. I got 12 quarters with Russell. He's been great in 11 of them.

My favorite is Jared Goff. Go look at his rookie numbers with Jeff Fisher, seven games. Unplayable. He was unwatchable. He had the wrong coach. Right. So we're not, that's a different com. Yeah, but Arthur Smith, how do we know he's a guy?

What did he do with Desmond Ritter in Atlanta? Well, Desmond Ritter doesn't have NFL franchise talent. White and Tanna Hill. I'm out on that guy. But I'll just say this. This line movement's interesting. I would tend to agree with you on three taking the Steelers here. This Kyle Hamilton injury, that's not good on a back end of a defense for the Ravens.

It's already bad? Yeah, it's already really bad. Pickens and Mike Williams could eat. Boy, Steelers fans. I think that's every week I stay away from a game I just want to watch. I stayed away from Detroit in Houston. I just want to watch Steelers Ravens. I think the number's right.

Three is the number. I'm staying away. It's always close. Some teams you're really right on, I nailed the Vikings this off season. We knew the Vikings were going to be good and exceed expectations. As I was Washington. Washington. I was way wrong on the Steelers.

So was I. I don't think anybody saw this coming. Outside of people who wear black and gold or black and yellow to sleep at night, the weirdo Steelers fans. But like, hey, they've been great. And we've acknowledged we were wrong. We're not being stubborn about it. We're wrong.

They're a good football team. I mean, this is not a mirage. I think they're better than you're giving credit for. I don't think they're a Super Bowl team, but I think there's too many data points that show you they're really, really good and they will last. They run it, their defense, their pass rush, they don't make mistakes. They have a veteran court. There's too many things they do.

Like Washington was a little fool's goal. They've lost the best teams they've played. Pittsburgh has got, played the chargers. Now, Herbert wasn't 100%, but they could not move the ball at all. And they, and what the line on the Ravens game is. It's a field goal. And Vegas is telling you is a really good team. Well, let me ask.

Okay, so Pittsburgh has exceeded all expectations. So let's say they win one playoff game and then lose to, Ravens, bills, whoever. What are they doing the offseason? Do they just run this back and they go, oh, we got a shot here and you got to pay Russell Wilson. Now, remember, he's on the cheap because the Denver's paying his salary. I think he has one more year. You know Russell Wilson is going to be like, hey, I delivered, we got to the playoffs.

No, he's not. I think he'd ride with Russell this year and next. You can draft a quarterback, but I think Justin Fields is a backup, is an exceptional backup. You think he's going to want to stay there to be the backup? He just proved. There's no market for him. Certainly there is. For Justin Fields?

Yeah. Mike Tomlin benched him. Well, benched him for Russell. By the way, and benched him and the team got significantly better. The market, there'll be no market for Justin Fields. I won't be robust. I'm talking like Carolina or something. He'll have no market.

If the Raiders aren't drafting in the top five. Justin Fields is not the answer. I'm not saying he's the answer. He's potentially a short-term solution. We know it's not Minshew or O'Connell. And if they're not drafting high enough, there's no way Fields is going to stay to be a... I thought Justin had another shot to start. But what I saw in his five or six starts and what I see with what Russell's done with the same exact talent,

we got a new... It's like Mac Jones. Hey, it's Belichick. Then you watch it for Jacksonville one start. Yeah. Can't play. Like I got new information. You and I never hold on to old information.

I got new starts. I thought CJ Stratt would be this. He ended up being that. And now this year he's pulled back. He's not quite that. Like, it's new information. If you're a pilot and you get a new flight plan because of storms, you want to fly into the storm or you want to adhere to the new flight plan.

Wasn't the new information on fields this year that, oh, he's not as bad as he was in Chicago? We watched them in Chicago. But we always said a lot of that is Chicago. And then Mike Tomlin went, yeah, it's not Chicago. And then Russell with the same players. They look like a top six team in the league. So I'm getting all sorts of new information. Tomlin's like, nah.

Russell were the same players. Wow. I'm getting bits and pieces of new information. All of it landing on the Justin Fields as a backup. That doesn't mean a month and a half ago. I'm like, I think he could get another shot. I thought it in the offseason. But when you start getting new information and don't pay attention to it,

you end up being a fan. You get fired and sit with them. Well, I mean, we didn't know if Russell Wilson would be a starter anyway. Remember, there was like Denver moved off and it's like any takers and Russell's looking around. It's like crickets. But now we have three games and it's been the three games that have looked the exact same way. No turnovers. Good movement.

Deep ball. Like all the games have looked the same. I wonder if it'll look a little different against a better defense. Not that Baltimore's great on the back end, but their front seven is pretty good. It's a good game. It should be fun. Let's go to the Colts. The Joe Flacco experiment is over.

reports are the Colts will go back to Anthony Richardson as the starter. Shane Steichen said, not just for this week against my Jets, for the rest of the season. By the way, Russ is on a one-year deal I was just told. I thought it was two, it's one. Stikin admitting he was wrong, Colin. Yeah, that's okay. I got this wrong. And I'm glad all along.

I said Anthony Richards has 10 starts. Can we have some patience? Prime example. Shane Steikin says he watched Joe Flacko like we all did and said he can't do it. but you don't know until you do stuff. You got to take swings. Shane Steichen took a swing. And thankfully, he didn't overreact to Anthony Richardson saying, I'm tired.

He didn't like it, but overreacting would be sticking with Flacco for another four games to punish Anthony Richardson. Anthony's young. He made a mistake. He learned his lesson. He won't do it again. But this idea. So wait, you think this was a punishment for that? Oh, I think it was part of it.

Yeah, I would say part. But Shane Steichen's not rigid. He's not stubborn. It's like, I'm not going to punish him for the season. Kids make mistakes. He's a kid. He barely played in college. This is Stikin's first rodeo as a head coach.

He's learning on the fly. Richardson certainly gives them a better chance to win long term than Joe Flacco. Flacco could retire in this offseason. It never made sense to go to Flacco. Richardson against the Jets is interesting. I just grabbed him in fantasy during the commercial break. I think he could have a good game on the ground. Jets can't stop the run. So now you got Anthony Richardson and Jonathan Taylor.

You're getting four points. Colts are getting four points. I mean, I'm not betting on this garbage game, but I am. Go Colts. Jets are looking for that high draft pick. Final story is in the NBA, Colin. Oh, man, this was an amazing finish last night. Detroit and Miami. Detroit gets an alley-yoop with one second left to tie it. Spolster goes timeout. They didn't have any. Technical foul. Detroit wins the game. Spolstra, one of the best coaches in the league.

We would agree. Here's what he said after the loss. I just made just a serious mental error, you know, there at the end. That's on my, that's on me. I feel horrible about it. You don't want him to come down to a mental error like that. You just would have liked to see him this go double overtime. That's the kind of game it felt like. It deserved to go double OT and not have somebody get in the way of that.

and unfortunately, you know, even as a veteran coach, I got in the way of that. Yeah, he's won about a hundred games there. I can live with that. But I'm sure the internet is eating today, crushing one of the smartest guys in the league because, you know, occasionally aggressive people make mistakes. Who cares? He pulled to Chris Weber, you know. Who cares?

You know, it's just he has won them multiple series. Forget games. I've watched him as like a seven and eight. eight seed. I mean, this guy got into the playoffs a few years ago, like as a deep seed, and ended up in the finals. This guy has won series as a coach. Some Miami Heat fans, I'm not going to get too down the rabbit hole, but they're a little upset with the Miami defense for the first time in like a decade is looking awful. They're getting a little old. Jimmy Butler a little long in the two?

That is exactly why they have a ton of talent? No, they're not real twitchy. They're getting old. It is not a great defensive roster. I mean, if you watch the Warriors now, for instance, Drey, Steph, and kids. Well, their rebounding's great. Their effort is great. They're playing tremendous defense. I mean, like, the Warriors defense. Why?

Because they're all young. They got energy. Old rosters, Milwaukee has gone down the tubes defensively. Now, Brooke Lopez and Janus can defend the rim, but they're not a very good defensive team. Why? Because they're old. They can't defend the wing.

Boston has athletes in their prime. Tatum Brown. Derek White. What a shock. The Celtic. defend the perimeter at a high level, athletes in their prime. Last night, if you were watching any hoops between Cooper Flagg with Duke, by the way, the Celtics lost to the Hawks in a great game.

This heat, obviously, Steph Curry. Good night of basketball, like midweek, you know, that's a little nice, right? I'm assuming you watch. Clay Thompson, Steph Curry, splash butter. Did you have your captain's hat on? Captain Coward. It's got kind of a Hugh Hefner feel to its odd hat. He liked it.

The college football, second time the college football 12-team playoff bracket was introduced last night. Miami, Oregon, BYU, and Texas would have, you know, they get those buys in the first round. Folks, people are arguing about Georgia, SEC.

I know they lost. They should be in the top 12. They beat BYU. Georgia's 13th. They control their fate. They play Tennessee this weekend. if they win they're in and Tennessee's not. Last year, we were arguing about an undefeated FSU team and a one-lossed Georgia team getting in.

I'm not going to lose a lot of sleep arguing about the fourth best team or the fifth best team in the SEC. Best is subjective. Here's what's not. Qualifying. Okay, BYU is qualifying. I don't need to see an SEC team play an SEC team in the playoff again. It's called the regular season. There's a purpose for it.

There's a purpose for seeding in this 12-team playoff. There is a purpose for the playoff itself. I don't need to see more Ole Miss Georgia. I've seen it. The top four seeds currently lead their conference and get a buy. That's not subjective. That's called qualifying, saying, you know what, I could drive. I'm only 13, but I could drive that car.

That's subjective. Could you drive it? You're kind of young. Going to the DMV and getting your license is qualified. fine. You can drive a car. You may not drive it well, but you can drive a car. So, like, don't confuse the two. I don't want to get into arguing if the fifth best SEC team could beat Boisey State. I want to see the best running back in the country play. Today, they'd play Ohio State. I'd watch. It'd be in Columbus. They probably wouldn't win, but I'd watch. I'd like to see the best running back in the country.

So all these things now with a 12-team playoff have a purpose. Regular season, got a purpose. Okay, conference championships. It means something. Seating has a purpose, as will the playoff. So I don't have a problem with it. I still think Texas is going to end up playing for the national championship. My guest is they'll play Ohio State, although I think right now Oregon's the best team, but I think it'll be very difficult if they have to play Texas, has better players, and Ohio State they already beat. But I think Oregon is the best team I've seen.

Ohio State and Texas, I think, have the best players. I would be fascinated to watch Alabama and Indiana. I would take Alabama. but I mean this Indiana coach is something else. So again, it's got a purpose. I can't wait for it. Josh McDaniel's going to join us in studio. I got so many things to ask him.

several seasons NFL head coach Broncos and Raiders Josh McDaniels is now joining us we've never officially met I think we've you may have come on before when you were the Raiders coach you were coming on the Zoom time during COVID that kind of stuff I got so many things to ask you let's start with this

so we watch these young quarterbacks I tended to think I thought Peyton and Bonex was a good fit I worried greatly about Caleb and Chicago's history if you were just privately talking How many starts, Josh, do you need with a rookie quarterback before you are driving home and maybe calling an assistant thinking, I'm not sure we got him or he'll be fine, we got him? I think you need to give a time. I think there's no question, you know, a few games here or there is not going to tell you all the things you need to know about whether or not he's going to be able to do all the things he needs to do to win at this level.

Yeah, I mean, Jimmy was not going to be ready right off the bat. three years in in 2016. You know, he had to start in Tom's absence, and he was able to do that. He learned and developed and was much more ready to do that then. I think they're all different now. Honestly, they're all coming from different backgrounds, some different systems than others.

And then I think it really, what matters most is that marriage of the quarterback, what he's learned, what he's good at, where is he going? What type of system are they going to implement there with him? And whether they're willing to adapt to his skill set and what he does well. You know, I think you're seeing some of that now with Jaden. He and Cliff work. Yeah, definitely.

And they're doing things that he's good at. You know, and I think what Cliff's probably, you know, doing now is, is what else can we add to his bucket? You know, he does these things well. Now we want to keep developing, you know, evolve him as he goes. throughout his career here and see what else we can add to him. Do you worry about Caleb Williams' accuracy and consistency? Are there things you can't clean up?

I think you can always make things better. And I haven't seen everything that Caleb has done. Certainly Caleb was very well regarded coming out of USC and had a great career there. And I think all these young quarterbacks come out and they find, life in the NFL is a little different. The windows are tighter. The coverages are different. The looks, the disguises, force you to hold the ball

and have to do different things with it. And so I think, you know, give them time. You know, they're going to make some mistakes. They're going to learn. And again, I know they just made a shift or a change there, and we'll see if that changes some of the success that he's having. You know, I've said this over the last month. The chiefs have become the Patriots.

I'm not sure they have the best roster, but I'm sure they have the best head coach, best quarterback, and one of the best coordinators on either side, that was you. I'm also sure situationally, they are smarter than you are. That's what you guys were for 20 years. You'd bring out that Edelman Pass against the Ravens, and you're like, how did they not use that six weeks ago? That's a beauty, that's a gym, and you had to hide it.

Was it just you and Brady and Bill? Is it just people? The chiefs have become you guys. They're not always the best team, but they literally play their best football. Go-line stand, late third down. Yep. What is it? What's the met?

Block field goal. Yeah. They could have done that in the first quarter. Yeah. They hid that puppy until the last play of the game. Yeah. I think they care about winning. I think they have a lot of guys that are selfless there.

And Andy, you know, he's obviously been doing this for a long time. And he's got that entire culture, you know, buying into. winning's the only thing that's really important at the end of the day. And you saw it with Kelsey early in the year, wasn't catching a lot of passes, but you didn't hear about any bickering or complaining or anything like that because I think they've really figured out, you know, what's most important is how do we play as a team

against this opponent this week and be victorious? And so I think Pat's matured. He understands what he needs to do each week. Some weeks it's throw 46 times for 350 yards. Other weeks it's throw for 100. 150 yards and one touchdown, you know, but Patrick's kind of put his ego aside. Not that he ever had one like that, but he knows that I have to play a certain way to give our team the best chance to win. I thought Tom did that for years and years in New England, and it's just going to be hard to beat them.

You know, you're going to have to play your A game. You're going to have to be really good situationally, you know, really good situationally. And you're going to have to, you know, fight tooth and nail to out-coach them, you know, which is very different. phone call for anybody to do? Owners are all billionaires now. Robert Kraft, like Jerry Jones when they bought the Patriots, I mean, they were bailing water to just make rent, right?

Now they're all billionaires. Firing a staff is a rounding air. Moving off coaches, David Tepper and Carolina, five, six games in, Robert Salafia. It feels like owner's wealth has created more of an impulsive feel and that staffs are feeling. it. Staffs are tougher. You never felt

that in New England, but you probably felt it with the Raiders. Do you think it's affecting coaching in this league? You're forced to be impatient because they're impatient. I think you definitely have an urgency that you feel now in the league. I don't know.

You're right about the New England situation. I never felt that. I felt urgency to do my best. I think we all did to try to win. But I think you're seeing that more and more that there's a very short shelf life on opportunity. And the urgency to do well and show that you know exactly how to improve and make progress, it's evident.

You know, it's evident across the league. And whether it's quarterback changes, coaching changes, coordinator changes, that's certainly part of our game now. We all have to accept that. We all understand the life that we live. And, you know, I hope it doesn't affect decision-making and things that you think are the right things to do for the organization. But I certainly, I know there's a premium on winning quickly, that's for sure.

I always defended when you and Tom would have the once-a-season blow-up on the sidelines. My take is, I mean, really, three and a half hours, it's on television. I'm on television. There are public jobs. It's not always pretty. You're doing stuff live. I can't hide in an accountant's office. During the week, though, with you and Tom, when would you present the game plan?

Was it a give-and-take back-and-forth, or would you present the game? or would you present the install on Tuesday, Wednesday, Tom goes along with it. Did Tom push back a lot on installs? I think the more Tom played, the more success he had, the more he understood what he liked and what he didn't like. It certainly became a huge back and forth for us. I mean, I have emails that are pages and pages long of things that he liked and things that he didn't like, you know, and I think that's what you have to do nowadays is,

when the quarterback has thoughts and opinions and ideas of what he feels good about, you certainly have to take all that in and then try to figure out exactly what's the right blend of things that fit that week against that team. And Tommy was not shy about giving input on those kind of things, and he earned it, earned every bit of it. And so we usually would be emailing on Monday, Tuesday, and then obviously we practice Wednesday, Thursday, and try to nail it down. But we were emailing on Friday night and Saturday morning as well to try to finalize the game plan.

And I just think that, you know, when you have a guy like him, Pat Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, you know, these guys that have certainly had a tremendous amount of individual success, team success, they've earned the right to give you their input. And you need to take that input in and try to figure out how to utilize it the best way. Bill had admiration and great respect for you, brought you back. obviously you had great success together. How often on the headset would Bill say, Josh, you're not

doing that reverse here. Josh, we're running the football, or did he give you carte blanche? He was really good about letting you kind of get into the rhythm and flow of the game. He may say, hey, can you stick a run in here? I want to get it down to the two-minute warning. Something like that situation. Or he would say,

hey, you got four downs here to get the first down. You know, it's third and three, and, you know, at the 37, hey, you got two downs. go ahead and try to do whatever you want to do here. But he definitely did a great job of just guiding us. He didn't over-do it on the headset. It's hard to do that. When you've got a guy in a rhythm, he's calling plays, he's trying to set things up.

It's hard to really interject too much, and I thought Bill was great at that. Did he ever say after a game, you were great? I don't know if he ever said that. He might have patted me on the back once or twice, but you knew when you did a good job. He definitely let you know that in certain ways. Might not have been the way somebody else did it, but he did. Okay. You felt respected.

I did. I did always. I'd love to have you back. Anytime you're around, families in town. I know your dad, you said, occasionally watches the show. That's right. And he must be bored out of his mind. I appreciate that.
