Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of Tontons and Wampas on the Ice Planet Hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith Rurali. of two.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Listen to Stuff to Blow Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we
Starting point is 00:01:47 survived it with our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black. people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:02:05 Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the Heard at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Heard. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Ah, here we go on a row. bust and busy news-breaking Thursday live in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:02:36 It's the Hurt. Wherever you may be, however you may be listening. IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio FS1. One hour from now, Greg CoSell. Every Thursday for the next 20 weeks, top of the second hour, bet on football, fantasy football, or just want to learn more. Greg CoSell, top of next hour, Nick Saban Hour 3. J. Mack is back.
Starting point is 00:03:00 Jason McIntyre on a Thursday. We got breaking news. And listen, we've talked about sometimes the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had a really rough camp. The Dallas Cowboys have had a rough offseason. Now they lose their left tackle Tyron Smith for months. Jack Prescott just got to be crestfallen this morning, right? No left tackle. Amari Cooper's gone. So let's start with that. Tyron Smith is a first ballot Hall of Famer. in the last two years alone, in the NFC East, Dak Prescott, when Tyron Smith doesn't play, is a 500 quarterback. I'm not going to count early rookie DAC.
Starting point is 00:03:40 I'm talking about fully formed lots of weapons, Zeke, Tony Pollard, C.D. Lam, Amari, Cooper, 500 in a lousy division without Tyron Smith. His passer rating goes from like pro-bow level, 108-1.1. 109 with Tyron Smith to when he hasn't played, 95. That's Jimmy G. Territory, right? So we're talking, this is a big loss. This is a big loss.
Starting point is 00:04:09 So think about from last year. They've now lost both tackles and a starting guard. Two productive wide receivers, a one and a three. A top pass rusher. Michael Gallup's coming off an ACL tear. Zeke has been slowly declining for years. and the free agent wide receiver, they acquired James Washington, is out six to ten weeks with an injury. Oh yeah, Mike McCarthy's still the coach.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Of the 32 NFL teams, nobody from the end of last year until this morning with this news has had a worse offseason. And I do not believe it's bad luck. I think it's bad business. I feel like the Cowboys are too insular. They need a fresh set of non-Jones family eyes in the organization. Jerry Jones said this morning about this injury, hey, this team drives through Zeke. It's 2022. He's a declining running back.
Starting point is 00:05:09 A running back. I said this two weeks ago. The Cowboys are becoming the Raiders with Al Davis aging and Jerry aging. They're out of touch. They are playing catch up to the chiefs, the bills, the Rams, the Ravens, the better organization. They've also had back-to-back kind of to me, sketchy drafts, a couple of hits like Michael Parsons and some misses and some reaches. And again, this is what's interesting.
Starting point is 00:05:37 Injuries, even ugly ones, to crucial players are not a death sentence. Green Bay Packers last year lost one of the best corners in football, Jaira Alexander, the best pass blocking left tackle arguably in the sport, David Bactiari, and Zedaria Smith, good pass rusher. but Aaron Rogers still guides them to the number one seat. Baltimore. Baltimore fell apart last year. Didn't they lose three running backs before October? They fell apart.
Starting point is 00:06:11 They left tackle, running back, crucial positions. They were still the number one seed in week 12 until Lamar Jackson got hurt. Why? Because John Harbaugh and Lamar, you trusted them to guide you. there. It's not that Tyron Smith is injured. It's both tackles, Amari Cooper, declining Zeke, and Mike McCarthy, can he elevate you? Harbaugh did with the Ravens. And Lamar and Aaron did with the Ravens and the Packers. Those teams had brutal injuries. I mean, Baltimore was insane last year. How they were a number one seed in
Starting point is 00:06:52 week 12 as one of the coaching marvels in the last few years. They were missing. Left tackles, running backs, corners, huge stars all over the team. They were number one seed in week 12 because Harbaugh is a great coach and Lamar's a great quarterback. But
Starting point is 00:07:08 do you trust Mike McCarthy and Dak Prescott to take you there and save this season? I trust Dak more than Mike McCarthy, but that's the issue here. I've watched the Rams fall apart. I've watched the Niners have injury issues. I've watched the Packers. I've watched the Ravens. But if you have an A quarterback and an A coach or one of them's an A, I feel you can get
Starting point is 00:07:32 through it. We saw the Packers and Ravens last year. This organization needs a fresh set of eyes. They feel totally outdated. For Jerry Jones to say this morning on another show, hey, this offense runs through Zeke. Come on, man. He is. He is. a declining running back and it's 20-22. All right. So the Lakers are finalizing a deal, giving up a couple of players to get Patrick Beverly. Now, okay, I have been very, very critical of the Lakers going forward.
Starting point is 00:08:10 I think like the Dallas Cowboys, they could use a fresh set of eyes in the building that aren't friends to Jeannie Bus. But I will say this. I kind of like this move. My three thoughts on the Lakers acquiring Patrick Beverly. Number one, playoff games, he can be a big time player. He's annoying. He's been in big playoff games, and he matters.
Starting point is 00:08:33 You can put him on a top scoring guard. He's a pain in the butt. AD and Patrick Beverly and LeBron at times are really good defenders. So you just brought in a really, really good defender. And a guy that's played in big games is annoying, can be a disruptor. there's a Rodman quality there. There's a Draymond quality where on the floor, you put him on one of their better players.
Starting point is 00:08:54 He's a pain in the butt. My second thought is, if you do acquire Kyrie Irving, and I think that's still on the table, he's a terrible defender. Patrick Beverly covers. You know, Steph Curry, not a great defender. Well, Clay Thompson covers.
Starting point is 00:09:10 Andrew Wiggins now can cover. So, you know, in the NBA, some of the great scores, and the Lakers still need a shooter on this roster, some of them don't defend. Kyrie Irving's a bad defender. Patrick Beverly is an A defender. So if you get him, and I still think the Lakers want him, I don't think they're done,
Starting point is 00:09:28 he covers for him. And my third thought is, this is another move to simply agitate Westbrook. Russell Westbrook and Patrick Beverly do not get along. This is now the third or fourth move in the last couple of months to agitate Westbrook and get him to just go. Remember those two leaks, those stories that create. Haynes story leaking. You're seeing leaked stories and they all seemingly take shots at selfishness and Westbrook and his inability to, you know, evolve and adapt to new roles. So, I mean, this did not, I guarantee in the Westbrook household, they weren't, they weren't popping a bottle
Starting point is 00:10:05 of champagne over this. But I do think this, and it's easy to be cynical, and I've been highly critical of the Lakers. LeBron, Anthony Davis, and Patrick Beverly, that is something. That's three guys that can defend. Now, are they finished? No, they have got to get another shooter. They have got to go in the market. I don't care if it's body healed. I don't care if it's Kyrie Irving. They got to get another shooter.
Starting point is 00:10:27 But I don't think they're done because of the time they made this move. They wanted to get Patrick Beverly in now. They want him for camp. They want to go. And LeBron, Beverly, and AD, those are elite defenders, especially AD and Beverly. LeBron, it's in spurts. When he feels like it or late in the game, late possessions, he's good. So that feels like they are some.
Starting point is 00:10:48 They're kind of a rugged physical defensive team. They need more shooters. But I don't think they're done. I mean, folks, we're, we're, we're, camp hasn't opened. We still got camp. We got trading deadlines in what? February. They're going to make more moves.
Starting point is 00:11:01 This feels like the move before the big move. Add Kyrie to this team. Say it out loud. LeBron A.D., Patrick Beverly. All right. That's something. May not be Golden State.
Starting point is 00:11:18 May not be Boston. Maybe it's not even a healthy Denver. But it's something. And I tend to trust LeBron in the postseason. And by the way, Stanley Johnson, Taylor Horton Tucker, that's who they gave up. Come on. Those guys, I mean, they're guys. And they're not, I mean, they're pro athletes.
Starting point is 00:11:36 I totally respect them. But did you expect them to be big in a big series against the Warriors or the Clippers? Not really. So I got to be honest with you. Not every move is a final move. and not every move has to be a big move. This is a complementary move that works perfectly if you acquire a, you know, you still can give up draft picks in Westbrook and go get a shooter.
Starting point is 00:12:05 Then it's a really interesting, because a lot of shooters in this league don't defend. So this feels like the move before the move, I like it. It doesn't make them Golden State. I don't think they're nearly as versatile or deep as the clippers. I don't, you know, I still think Boston's core is really good, really talented, and I love their coach. I don't think they're top three or four in the league. But let's not poo-poo. It's something.
Starting point is 00:12:33 How big of something? I don't know. But the one thing that is so clear, if they could have picked a single guy in the league to agitate Westbrook, this would have been the guy. I mean, LeBron is a host. over Russell Westbrook. Remember, Russell was not in that meeting a couple of weeks ago with LeBron and his agent and Darwin and Darwin Ham and the GM. A couple weeks later, they get Patrick Beverly. Come on now.
Starting point is 00:13:01 And not a coincidence. They're trying to drive Russ out of town. And, you know, and that's that. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeard Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Starting point is 00:13:27 Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:13:49 I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way,

Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes,
Starting point is 00:14:45 Follow at Clifford and a TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English.
Starting point is 00:15:06 Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:15:29 We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:15:49 Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we, are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch.
Starting point is 00:16:20 Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.
Starting point is 00:16:34 I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. You are now entering the no bull zone sponsored by credible.
Starting point is 00:16:55 Great rates. None of the bull. So this is a bummer story. Oklahoma City, Chet Holmgren, 7-1-190. There were body concerns. Tall, lanky, drive to the basket. We talked about this before the draft. this stuff, these pro scouts, it's what they do for a living.
Starting point is 00:17:12 They were all concerned about this. He got hurt at a pro am. I don't know why he's at a pro am in a tiny gym in Seattle. And he got hurt here and he's out for the year. Now the silver lining is, and I had said this when he got drafted, I would put a limit on the number of games he could play as a rookie anyway, like 50, 55. I kept saying that over and over.
Starting point is 00:17:33 He's too skinny. And if you're playing him 80 games, he's never going to be able to put on weight. The cardio is exhausting in the NBA from college. college your rookie year. So my takeaway was put him on it, never play him three straight games. So the silver lining here is he can go spend eight months putting on weight. Now, Willie, Sean Bradley never could. Some guys can't. But the silver lining is he's not the only guy to get hurt. Joe L. M. B'd missed his rookie year. Joe L. M. Bede is one of the best players in the league. You know, a Blake Griffin. Remember that? Blake Griffin missed his rookie year. Had a great career.
Starting point is 00:18:05 So it's not the end of the world. There's a silver lining. Put that kid in a weight room and put on 15, 20 pounds. But, but there is a history in the NBA. And pro scouts do this for a living. They know more than you do. And they know more than I do. And I asked my two scouts in the NBA, and they both said, if I had the number one pick, I wouldn't take him. Oklahoma City, though, had a bunch of picks. So I support OKC going out and getting him. It's the same, you know, it's like in retirement. If you had $50,000 to return, retire on, don't take big risks. If you had a couple million dollars to retire on, yeah, but he comes up to you, hey, 25,000 bucks on this side business, it's crazy,
Starting point is 00:18:48 then roll the dice. Oklahoma City has so many great picks in the next three years. I think you've got to take big swings. And I think his talent, his skills for a seven-foot guy are unbelievable. Maybe they're not Kevin Durant, but they're in that kind of class, right? Put the ball on the floor, slash shoot. So, but let's be honest about it. this. I remember getting pushback when I said, yeah, he's 7-1-190. I got real concerns. Well, he can put on weight. Yonis is the exception. Skinny dude for years didn't get hurt. KD's been hurt a lot. Yal Ming got hurt a lot. Porzingis got hurt a lot. Most of you have never seen a guy named Sam Bowie, one of the top five, 10 college basketball players of my life.
Starting point is 00:19:34 His career ended. Tall 7-4 skinny guy. Like, unbelievable. skills like Chet Holmgren. For the time he was playing, he was pulling up on fast break, 7-4 guy for jumpers. Sam Boy was unbelievable. Sean Bradley was another guy. Everybody thought he was going to put on weight. He didn't. New rule on the show.
Starting point is 00:19:53 If professional scouts are concerned about your body heading into an NBA career, Zion, Sean Bradley, Chet Holmgren, they do it for a living. They're probably right. So this kid's already checked one of the two concerns. His two concerns were, we'll never put on weight. We don't know that to be true. My guess is he's not going to put on a ton. And the second thing was, he'll be hurt a lot.
Starting point is 00:20:15 That one's already checked and he hasn't played a game. In fact, I went this morning to a NBA profile, NBA draft.net. And this is a scout. Lack of physical strength remains his biggest hurdle. Can he add weight and maintain agility? Big question mark. Without better body strength, durability is a factor. More physical players will bully him under the rim.
Starting point is 00:20:41 Shies away from contract, contact, which limits the amount of separation ball handlers can get in the action. Every one of the criticisms is weight-based, is body-based. So don't get defensive. Like Ted Hongren, Zion, Sean Bradley, Porzingeres. These are real concerns from real scouts. I don't think he ever puts on huge weight. When I look at Janus, he still looks thin to me. me, he's just so muscular it works, but he's an outlier.
Starting point is 00:21:13 Bigs get hurt, skinny bigs get hurt a lot. Bigs that slash, Porzingis, Durant, Bigs that slash. By the way, Anthony Davis is a, you know, he's more than a back to the basket center. He can move through the lane. When you fall in your 7-1, that is a long way to fall. So I don't think, though, it's the end of the world. I've seen guys miss their first year, and I will totally defend OKC drafting them. They have done such a great job to compile picks.
Starting point is 00:21:41 You owe yourself big swings. So I have no problem with the draft pick. I think the kid will put on 20 pounds at least. And I think we'll look at him and go, you know what? Well, it wasn't the worst injury. Jordan missed some time with an injury. I think Stockton did. Bird did.
Starting point is 00:21:59 Guys get hurt. It happens. J-MAC with the news. No, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. All right, Colin, we're going to get started in the AFCE He's Tuatung of Iloa.
Starting point is 00:22:11 A lot to prove, obviously, this season. Dolphins hired an offensive-minded coach in Mike McDaniel. They traded for Tyreek Hill. But there's a big year for Tua, right? And he's got all the tools necessary for a major jump. According to McDaniel, the key to the progress will be harnessing his bravado. Here's what the coach said. When I first met him and took in his personality.
Starting point is 00:22:33 This was a guy that was just very guarded with scars. This guy that was quiet. You could tell he was trying to please. He jumps on stage with some bongos in the background and is dancing with the glow, chest out, confidence, bravado. Just magnetic. And I was like, that's it. That is the spirit of the athlete that if we can bring it out on the field, that's how you play the quarterback position in the best way. Colin, everyone on the Miami Dolphins cannot stop saying great amazing things about Tua.
Starting point is 00:23:02 Colin, this is like a please. We got to pump him up. We must elevate the confidence. Also, I'm going to defend Tua here. The last couple years for him, they have done such a bad job as an organization, beating him down with rumors and the Brian Flores relationship that I'm not going to crush the dolphins for going over the top the other way. And I said this with Kirk Cousins. I think Kirk Cousins will have a good year.
Starting point is 00:23:27 He and Zimmer, this was just a, there were fissures all over that relationship. So Kenne-O'Connell comes in and if he's got to coddle him a little bit and make him feel good, That's what Sean McVeigh did to Jared Gough when he first got there. Goff was so bad with Jeff Fisher that the first thing McVe did, you go back to that first year. All he said about Jared Gough was the kid's unbelievable. Sometimes with quarterbacks, these are young kids. You've got to build them back up when they've been broken down. So I'm going to give the dolphins a pass.
Starting point is 00:23:57 And we know two is an accurate thrower. So I'd be careful about saying it's too much hype. He's going to have at least a good B year. as a quarterback. One thing that's not really mentioned is the whole Herbert draft thing. Like, Herbert has been so damn good. Dolphins fans, we got to get Watson. Herbert's crushing. It might
Starting point is 00:24:18 be too much to overcome. I know they have the receivers column, but you have them in the playoffs, if I recall? Yeah, I think they're a borderline playoff team because I think three teams from the AFC West, KC, Denver, and the Chargers get in. So it kind of limits, you know, I think basically
Starting point is 00:24:33 Miami and New England battle for like the final spot. And my guess, is Tyreek Hill, the offensive players for Miami just win a game. They probably shouldn't win. I think New England has to play more perfectly to win. Their margin of error because they don't have a lot of power. I think Miami can win a game. They play poorly. They've just got playmakers. And I think they're both in that nine and eight, ten and seven spot. And I think Miami sneaks in. That opener with the Patriots is massive, which dovetails beautifully into our second story about Mack Jones and the Patriots. That offense dealing with some growing pains, obviously,
Starting point is 00:25:08 this offseason, especially following their struggles at joint practices, Colin. That's bad. Former offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels and the Raiders, they really gave it to the Patriots, and despite the issues, Mack Jones, he doesn't want to label things. That failure is putting a label on something that's not the process, so we're just trying to focus on the process and not the result, and failure would be considered a result. So we're just trying to work through it all, and we don't need to overcomplicate it football. It's a simple game if you make it a simple game.
Starting point is 00:25:41 So we're all trying to get there. It doesn't happen overnight, and we're making good progress. So that's all you can ask for. Yeah, Colin, it's tough to shake growing pains when you've got the weakest wide receivers in the division. The Jets are better on the outside. That's true. The Buffalo Bills definitely. And as you said, the dolphins are.
Starting point is 00:25:57 And without Josh McDaniels, Colin, this is a tall order for the Patriots. We have Greg Bedard on our show in about an hour and a half. He's a Patriot reporter. So they were scrimaging with a. the Raiders. You know, and when a team reporter, remember, players and coaches read team reporters. So when a team reporter who's going to have to face them the next day is like, this is a disaster. And it's not just Greg Bedard, who's a legitimate reporter. I mean, these New England guys, these Boston guys, there's a lot of fandom. It's much harder to be a local reporter and bagging a local team because you got to go to practice the next day.
Starting point is 00:26:31 It's ugly and it's bumpy and Buffalo's better and Miami is better. Frankly, you know, we'll wedge the Jets in. the Jets are going to score points this year. I don't know how good they are, but they're going to score some points. They've had back-to-back really good drafts. They've hit some home runs in the draft. So there's no question. This is the most anemic offense in the division. And in 2022, that, to me, doesn't feel like a playoff team.
Starting point is 00:26:53 Yeah, and remember Brady could elevate guys. Wes Welker and company got, like, obscure players. I don't know that Matt Jones can do that. He's a team manager. We don't know. Yeah. All right. Final story, Colin.
Starting point is 00:27:03 I'm sorry, laughing. The Cowboys obviously try to bounce back from last year's early playoff exit, Dak Prescott, the focal point of the offense, viewed it by some, not me, as an MVP candidate. Don't tell that to Jerry Jones. Colin, he believes the offense starts and stops with Ezekiel Ellet. Here's what he said this morning. Zeke is in the best shape he's ever been in.
Starting point is 00:27:24 Now, it is still a fact, we go as Zeke goes. I know it's a lot on Dak's shoulders, but we go as Zeke goes. He's very capable of being everything we've ever wanted him to be. The wild card, though, is the guy that's playing beside him. him Pollard. And so we put Pollard in some plans. That with Zeke. For the defenses, we'll have to work against midweek and be ready. Then you've got Pollard. We really like where we are at running back. And it all starts and stops with Zeke. Yeah, this is, come on now. I would argue at the end of last year, I thought Pollard was better than Zeke. Unquestioned. I thought Zeke was the second best
Starting point is 00:27:59 running back the Cowboys had. But the mindset that we're going to go as our running back goes. Well, think of this. So this is interesting. You just said this. to me during the break that if you're the cowboy, to me, and I trust Matt Mosley, who was on the show yesterday, you've got to go get a left tackle. Yes. So Dallas does not have an experience left tackle.
Starting point is 00:28:17 You can't punt the season. So you got to go get a left tackle. What was floated in Houston? Laramie Tunsell, the left tackle for Houston, obviously one of the better guys at his position. Not great last year, but come on, it's Houston. Does Dallas say, hey, we need him. We need a bridge to Tyron Smith,
Starting point is 00:28:34 who, by the way, probably won't be Dallas next year, given his contract. you go get Tunsell? Would you give up a first round pick? I think I would. Well, Jerry's desperate. Well, I mean, sports is about finding a great asset and then protecting it. The Colts found Andrew Luck and didn't
Starting point is 00:28:49 protect him. So, you know, I've always believed in the NFL. You find a quarterback, you protect a quarterback, and then you draft guys to go after their quarterback. Right. So to me, putting DAC in games now with the current Cowboy Left Tackle, who's never started an NFL game. Doesn't have any NFL snaps. I'm going to go get a left tackle.
Starting point is 00:29:12 And I think Houston, now, if I'm Houston, I'm not just going to give you Laramie Tunzel, because I have a young quarterback. And Davis Mills, I don't want him getting banged up. So, you know, my takeaway is if you're going to get, if you want my left tackle, I want a first round pick. And maybe something else. Maybe more. Yeah, I mean, if a receiver gets five picks, what does a star left tackle get? Yeah. It feels like to me it's a first and a fifth or something. And if you really want to panic Dallas fans, remind them that Dax salary, because of the contract he signed, goes up significantly next year. It's going to be even tougher to build a team with Zach's contract, Dax contracts spiking next year. Colin, it's not looking good for the Cowboys.
Starting point is 00:29:51 Jay Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd Lie News. So Mike Martz was kind of ahead of his time, a very bright offensive guy. He now works for 33rd team. It's like a website where they have a bunch of former executives in the NFL and they do podcasts and, you know, columns and all that stuff. So Martz was talking about the Chicago Bears and Justin Fields and he thinks this could be the worst team in the league, the worst offense. Fields is a guy that is not a, he makes a lot of mistakes, not particularly accurate at times. He's not quick reading rat guy and he's on a horrendous team. I don't know if I've seen an offense that bad in town since the 0-16 Detroit Lions, you know, they just
Starting point is 00:30:33 don't have anybody there. Man, I tell you, it's a bad football team. Well, they're over under a six and a half and that's in a bad division. So it is a bad football team. And I would say this. Atlanta and Seattle are going to be bad, but they have a plan. It's a tank year. It really is. Chicago's going to be bad. And this is a promising year in a weak division. And this is why I said a week ago, two weeks ago, you've got to trade Roquan Smith. Nobody needs linebackers to win anymore. Rams linebackers, worst part of their team, they won the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:31:11 Bengals linebacking Corps, very average, could have won the Super Bowl. Nobody's winning that linebacker. Bears can't get the online right. They have one legitimate receiver. Moody, that's it. So I have real concerns about Zach Wilson, the Jets quarterback, and Justin Fields, the Bears quarterback. The difference is, if you look at
Starting point is 00:31:33 how the Jets have built with Joe Douglas, the last two drafts. They've done it right. Now, I don't know if Saul is the right coach. But in the last two drafts for young Zach Wilson, they've gotten him, Garrett Wilson, may have been the best receiver in college, Brees Hall, who I think is going to be a really good running back, Elijah Vera Tucker, a pro-bowl level offensive lineman eventually, in my opinion. Elijah Moore, clever wide receiver, and Michael Carter are running back in the fourth round,
Starting point is 00:32:01 who was a bit of a steal. So they're getting him pieces and they're getting him production. Now, Beckton and the left tackle's done, but they're doing it the right way. Offensive pieces, running backs, offensive linemen. And back-to-back drafts, they're doing it the right way. The Bears holding on to Roquan Smith. So you're asking a young quarterback with an unproven defensive coach and one legitimate receiver in a division that's got, you know, a top.
Starting point is 00:32:32 top five organization, Green Bay, and a super talented offensive team Minnesota that's going to score a bunch of points with a new offensive coach. I feel like the Bears operate like it's a 1958 franchise. They're a black and white TV in a digital world. They just do not feel like they're connected. They're slow to pivot. They can't figure out the salary cap. The Rams manipulate the salary cap.
Starting point is 00:32:54 The salary cap manipulates the Bears. And I said this the other day. Name their best receiver ever. name their best quarterback ever. Like they just don't get offense. And they have just romanticized Ditkin, 85 bears, forever. Enough.
Starting point is 00:33:14 Pivot to offense. Give up Roquan Smith. Get Justin Fields help. The O line's still bad. So the Jets may be bad, but they're doing it the right way. Back-to-back drafts. Running backs, O-line.
Starting point is 00:33:29 And they've hit on these guys. They've done a really good. I mean, they hit on a running back last year, Michael Carter. They went for another one this year. They want to do two good running backs. That's how you have to do it. You got to overcompensate for that lack of experience. So the Jets and the Bears may both be bad, but at least I look at the Jets and go, that's the way to do it.
Starting point is 00:33:48 Joe Douglas is doing it the right way. That is a very promising. Now, Buffalo's great. Miami's got better players. But if the Jets fail, you went down doing it the right way. I don't feel like that with the Bears. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Starting point is 00:36:36 To be clear, 84 was big to me not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for Blank.
Starting point is 00:36:58 Black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Starting point is 00:37:51 Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. So his last two articles, and this is something we spent, we think the most interesting
Starting point is 00:38:22 team in the preseason has been the Steelers and the Kenny Pickett stuff. But there's also some something, Kevin, and I'm a believer that last year, all seven NFC playoff teams had offensive coaches. And I can like Belichick and Mike Zimmer and Mike Tomlin and Pete Carroll, but the world's changing. And, you know, I look at the Steelers O line. It's a four-year rebuild. It is still awful. Andy Reid figured his out in four months. I don't know what to make of the Steelers. I mean, you wrote your recent article about them. I can like Mike Tomlin and be concerned about the direction of the franchise at the same time. How do you feel? It's a pretty strange franchise because they have the most expensive defense in the entire NFL. Now, that's indicative of
Starting point is 00:39:07 the fact that they've got a bunch of second contract veterans there. But they've got the cheapest offense and it shows, frankly. Where do they go a quarterback? I don't know. I want to take a step back on this Kenny Picker preseason stuff. I keep a headline from the New York Times in my phone, just to remind me, it's from preseason 1998. And it says, Ryan Leaf out duels Peyton Manning. Okay. That's and I, anytime I want to get ahead of myself on any of these guys in their preseason, I talk about that. But I do think Trubisky will probably start the season. But it's a strange franchise right now because they've had the same quarterback for for almost 20 years, the same GM for 20 years and same coach, obviously, for 17 of those. They get to find out what it's like to be a normal NFL franchise actually has turnover. Yeah. The commanders do this every year. The Browns do it every other year. The Steelers actually have to. go through. They have so much stability and they will have stability going forward. But this is turnover for them. And that's why I find where they're at so fascinating column, because it's going to be a process they haven't gone through. Yeah. No, it's a great line.
Starting point is 00:40:10 Washington goes through this every year. So I don't know why Tom was gone for 11 days. Probably a work-life balance thing. But I do think it's interesting. One of the reasons we both think he chose Tampa because he looked at what they had and they were missing a right tackle. and it was a year with good tackles in the draft, and they went and got it. So it was a little bit like Matt Stafford of the Rams. It was like, man, they just need a catalyst. I can walk right in here.
Starting point is 00:40:38 You look at the Bucks injuries this camp. What do you think Brady's, what do you think he sees what he's thinking? Somebody told me after the last Patriots game he ever played against Tennessee through that pick six, look like James Winston out there, that he felt that that situation was hopeless in New England. in the roster situation.
Starting point is 00:40:57 There was no way to build a receiving core and some of the things they needed. They had a great defense, but they did things on offense. And Tom Brady was very, very good, even though we've heard stories about maybe he didn't have as robust to market as we thought, but he did know how to pick a team when he picked Tampa Bay,
Starting point is 00:41:13 a fast defense. He could recruit some guys. He'd bring Grunk back. The offensive line was solid. And I think if you gave him this roster right now, this offensive roster with this offensive line, in particular, Allie Marpet retired before he came back. But if you look at these injuries,
Starting point is 00:41:26 I don't know if you would have come back to play for this, Colin. I just think that he, I think this is getting to be a much worse situation than he anticipated. I think if you go back in time, he probably never retires in the first place and just says, hey, Alan Marpet, what's one last ride kind of thing? This is getting to be a dire situation. And I frankly think he's probably in the back of his head saying, oh, what did I come back for? Yeah, no, and I mean, he came back because they reassigned Bruce Ariens in the lawsuit in Miami. me, I think he had wrapped it up.
Starting point is 00:41:58 So you're a couple, last week you had an article. I love Joe Burrow. And I remember when he came into the league, people thought I was ripping him. I said, I think he's Tony Romo. And I always defended Tony Romo. I love Tony Romo. And he's got one of the highest passer ratings. He made some errors late in games, but he went for it.
Starting point is 00:42:15 He was a kind of let it rip guy. And I like him as a broadcaster. I liked him as a quarterback. And it was like, you don't like Burrow. Well, I didn't think Burrell was going to be this good. And I just think he's different. There's an it and his deep ball passing behind a battle line is kind of courageous. So you did a story about this, sort of the magic in mythology of Burroughs sort of deep ball passing.
Starting point is 00:42:38 What did you find? What did you hear? As interesting a quarterback as I've ever been around. And you cannot go into that locker room and not hear an amazing story about Joe Burrow, throwing into double coverage or, you know, we can't even on TV say what T. Higgins told me he thinks when something and sees the ball coming towards him and saying, I'm in double coverage right now. What the heck is going on?
Starting point is 00:42:59 It's unbelievable. And what I think is interesting now is the Bengals are becoming a real NFL franchise because of Joe Burrow. What I mean by that is they're building into a practice facility. I mean, nobody ever thought they would do. They're going to sell the naming rights to the stadium because, frankly, they need the money. I was joking with somebody when I was down there in Cincinnati. They shouldn't sell naming rights to the stadium.
Starting point is 00:43:18 It's just sell naming rights to Joe Burroughs contract. A local skyline chili would give all the money. in the world to be the Joe Burrough second contract presented by Skyline Chilling, right? Just get it on the ground floor there. But I think it's just, you know, his pre-snap adjustments are unlike anything, anybody's seen since Peyton Manning, frankly. And it's funny because everybody I talk to, they say, ah, you know, we're hesitant to say the Peyton Manning word. You know, we don't want to make any comparisons. But it's getting harder and harder every year to not see those comps. When you talk about the fact he's able to throw with anticipation and see those windows, know exactly where everybody's going
Starting point is 00:43:53 be on the field play a defender against themselves, which is classic Peyton, knowing exactly when someone's going to turn. Brian Callahan, the officer coordinator, was an offensive assistant on those Denver teams. He understands his stuff. And he says there are times when Joe comes to him on the sideline and says, they can't cover this. We're calling our shot. We're going to score a touchdown. That stuff is pure Peyton Manning. And that's why I think it's so fascinating because we're seeing a legend grow in front of our eyes. And he's got the personality to be that kind of legend cop. You know, I've been critical of two franchises over the last couple of years, the Cowboys and the Lakers, and for the same reason. It's very insular.
Starting point is 00:44:31 You know, Jeannie Bus has built stuff with, you know, friends of Kobe and friends of Jeannie Bus. And I'm like, you've got to bring in fresh eyes here. You just can't, it can't be at corner store. The Cowboys, similarly, it's, it's, I need, I need new eyes here. So last year, the Packers and the Ravens were decimated with injuries. yet Green Bay finished number one, number one seat. And Baltimore, Week 12 was a number one seat because Harbaugh, Lamar, Aaron, overcome it. Okay, so now this year, it's Tampa and Dallas, right?
Starting point is 00:45:06 Like bad off-season. I think Tampa will be fine because of Brady. But I don't think it's a hot take saying, I think Dallas, if you go to the last, the Super Bowl until today, I think they've had a terrible offseason. Terrible. Terrible. I don't think, I think it's, in the AFC, they're a third to a fourth place team. I really believe that.
Starting point is 00:45:29 Are they a playoff team, though, in the significantly weaker NFC? Are they? In the NFC East, I mean, I think that can be wide open. I don't really know what direction that goes in. But I agree with you. They're not a contender, and they should be. If you have a quarterback, like Dak Prescott, you should be competing for the NFC champion. championship every single year. And the failure to not do that is a failure of team building and
Starting point is 00:45:55 understanding what you are. I just saw a quote. You guys put it up there. The Jerry Jones said, we'll go where Zeke goes, where Zeke takes us. That's not how this works. You were just talking about Justin Feudel's mythologizing and the Bears mythologizing the 85 bears and defense and all that stuff. I still feel like there's so much romanticism about the Emmett Smith one game in Dallas that we're going to build through the running game. That's not how this works, Jerry. Now you can say that. You can say that, but you also have to build an offense where everything's going to work. They haven't done this. This tackle injury is a complete disaster.
Starting point is 00:46:27 Do they panic and try to go get Laramie Tunsel? I just saw somebody speculate that on Twitter. I don't know, but I do know that where they are right now is a failure of, frankly, the Jones family. Yes, that's exactly what I feel, is that, you know, good teams get hurt. Green Bay, by the way, lost David Boktiari, Jira Alexander, and Zadaria Smith. and they may have lost their tight end for a while. I forget. I mean, they had major injuries.
Starting point is 00:46:53 They ended up hosting a playoff game. Like, this stuff happens in the NFL. All right, Kevin Clark, the ringer. Check out his slow news day videocast. It's always funny. Kevin, it's great seeing you. See you soon, Colin. All right, yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:06 Go read is Joe Burrow, the myth and mythology, the magic and mythology of Joe Burrow. It's really, really interesting. And, boy, this Dallas thing is. You know, you know when teams, like, I can't be the only person that thinks this. Like, I understand I didn't grow up in a traditional family. So I don't romanticize, you know, church or prep schools because I didn't grow up around it. Like I, when I moved to the East Coast, it was kind of cool.
Starting point is 00:47:35 You'd see these prep schools that looked like Hogwarts and people have been going to Fenway and Martha's Vineyard in the Cape for the families for 75 years. And part of me was jealous. It's like this is awesome. The advantage to not having that and having to find your own way in life is that you are always kind of looking for the next thing. You're looking through the windshield, not the rearview mirror. And it's amazing to me these franchises, the fact that Cowboys let Cedric Wilson and Amari Cooper go. Are you watching the league?
Starting point is 00:48:08 I mean, the Rams had a good receiving corps and they brought in OBJ. Hey, Cooper Cop. I mean, they had Van Jefferson. They had workable tight ends. They drafted a couple young receivers. I mean, the Niners drafted another receiver. They have Debo Samuel. They have George Kittle.
Starting point is 00:48:26 They have Brandon I.E.U. who had a promising rookie year. They go get Danny Gray from SMU. Like Tampa Bay. They're always looking to ads. Kansas City. They may lose Tyreek Hill, but they drafted more receivers. They brought in Jujuice Ms. Schuster and a Packer receiver.
Starting point is 00:48:42 And you look at teams. like Cleveland now. If Amari Cooper twists an ankle, that is a terrible receiving core. If C.D. Lamb twists an ankle, Dallas is going to be a disaster. So it's like when you start romanticizing the past Dallas, you know, you wake up and the Lakers do a little bit of this. They have romanticized, you know, the magic, the Shaq and Kobe. And look up and the warriors are just young star, young star, young star. And I sometimes I look at it. and I'm like, it's not that hard to be ready to overcome an injury. It should not decimate you.
Starting point is 00:49:19 Cowboys online now is bad. Three years ago, it was the best in the league. Greg CoSell, it's Thursday. He is money. Coming up our number two, it's the hurt.
