Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule. of two. Listen to Stuff to Blow Your Mind on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J.
Starting point is 00:01:41 And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for Black.
Starting point is 00:01:57 people listen to look back at it on the iHeart radio app apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts thanks for listening to the herd podcast be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to three eastern nine to noon pacific on fox sports radio and fs one find your local station for the herd at fox sports radio dot com or stream us live every day on the i heart radio app by searching herd you're listening to fox sports radio It is a Monday, a glorious Monday. Starting point is 00:02:39 Fight on, fight on, fight on. Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1, 1 hour from now where Colin was right, where Colin was wrong. I am going to be difficult to deal with after an amazing Saturday night. J. Mack is joining us. Wow. How much fun I get to start my weekend Saturday, USC, and then I get to end it with Mahomes and the Chargers. What a showcase of talent that was.
Starting point is 00:03:07 Wow. And then today we get USA soccer. We got a great Monday night football matchup. We do. It's a great week for sports, Colin. Let's start with Mahalms versus Herbert. My two big takeaways in that game is great in anything in life. Great creates clarity.
Starting point is 00:03:25 Okay? If you're still clinging to Taylor Hineckee or Daniel Jones, you think you can go toe-to-to-to-to with Mahomes? When shootouts with Mahomes, give it up. Burrow can. Josh Allen can, Justin Herbert can, may not win most of them, but they can go toe-to-to-to-with- Burrow. They can make big plays, make Patrick sweat a little. He creates clarity. If you're still clinging to Daniel Jones, man, you're not winning shootouts here.
Starting point is 00:03:50 He's playing a different sport than Daniel Jones and Taylor Heineke. Okay. Mahomes is not just a physical unicorn. He is a mental unicorn. A demeanor is perfect. I mean, he is a unicorn on so many levels. When Aaron Rogers trails late, he looks annoyed. When Mahomes trails late, it's a challenge. He's salt.
Starting point is 00:04:15 He binds everything together and brings the best flavor out of everything. Rebuild the O line, no problem. Picks it up game one. Rebuild the receiving core? No problem. I'll make Tony work. Optimistic, never aloof, always engaged, willing to adapt, incredibly coachable. What can't he do? So that's the first thing. He creates clarity. There's about six guys in this league that can go toe to toe with him and compete with him and challenge him. Herbert's one of them. And what a shock. Mahomes wins the battle.
Starting point is 00:04:47 Just like he's won the biggest battles with Josh Allen. The second thing is, think of all the money and the time that Denver spent, the Raiders spent, the Chargers spent trying to dethrone Patrick Mahomes, cornerbacks, edge rushers, big swings. Yeah, he's still 8 and 2, he's the king. And that's the way it works. When you have a great, great all-timer, I mean, the Pistons, tackled Michael Jordan for a lot of years. He got stronger and he never looked back in the East. How many coaches did LeBron get fired in the East or Sabin get fired in the SEC?
Starting point is 00:05:32 Great simply overcomes. The chargers are buying pass rushers. Denver's spending big money. Raiders bring in pass rushers and Mahalms and they're all trying to beat Mahalms here in November and December. Get around Thanksgiving. That's the real regular season. They're spending that money, not for September, not for the week after Labor Day. They're spending it for November and December. And after last night, Mahomes is 25 straight wins in November and December. Leads the NFL in touchdown passes, leads the NFL in passing yards. And he is the target, not only of the AFC West, Mahomes is now the target of the league. when you draft a guy and this is what greatness does
Starting point is 00:06:19 can our guy go toe to toe with the Mahomes in a big game? I mean, Jimmy Garapolo gets to a Super Bowl in San Francisco with a better overall roster, I would argue, is like, we got to draft another quarterback. Jared Goff gets to a Super Bowl. And Sean McVeigh is like, that's not going to be good enough.
Starting point is 00:06:42 I mean, that's what this kid is doing. And he proves that you can do it all. He's such a unique player. And it's not just the physical gifts. It's the coachability, the adaptability. You can watch certain star quarterbacks trailing late in games. You can watch their body language. They get tight.
Starting point is 00:07:01 They feel annoyed. Now, Mahomes, the body language is good. Patting guys on the back. Let's go. This is what we do. I've never seen anything quite like it. there's a little Brady just add a better arm lots of mobility and an offensive coach and Andy Reid it's like you know Brady with three other gifts and here was Patrick on the comeback win I just thought it was cool today that when we I went in the huddle everybody was just like let's just do it but there was no like doubt that we were going to go down there and score there was no doubt that we were we were going to make make it happen and the offensive line to the receiver
Starting point is 00:07:42 versus the running backs, tight ends. Everybody had their mindset of let's take it one play at a time, get it down the field, and go out there and get a touchdown when it counts, and that's what we did. It's so interesting. They took a brief shot of Justin Herbert's face watching Mahomes. He had just led his team to the lead, and they took a shot of Herbert. And he was like, oh, boy.
Starting point is 00:08:03 A minute and a half left. He's just like, oh, boy. I mean, it's the only quarterback of my life. Not even Brady gave you this. when the chargers were driving down the field, the entire discussion was, don't score too soon. It wasn't about scoring.
Starting point is 00:08:21 You don't score too soon. Oh, a minute and a half left. They may have scored too soon. Well, after he came back 13 seconds and beat Buffalo, I get it. What a spectacular talent. How lucky is the NFL to have that kid his face of the league? All right.
Starting point is 00:08:36 So our favorite bet of the weekend was actually the Cowboys. You could see it coming. The Vikings played in a wild. wildly emotional game against the bills. The Cowboys were, after that, lost in Green Bay backed into a corner, you knew they'd play well. But this morning, if you listen to Cowboy fans, they're Super Bowl favorites. I've come to the conclusion with the Cowboys. I'm just here for the emotional circus.
Starting point is 00:09:00 I'm not going to take a sight. I just like watching it. I mean, think about the stages of the Cowboys this year. Week one, that gets hurt. They get throttled by Brady and the Bucks. Woe is me. Weeks 2 through 5, backup Cooper Rush starts winning. Is Dak coming back? Dax no good. We have a quarterback controversy.
Starting point is 00:09:20 Week 6 through 10, Dak kind of slides back in for Cooper Rush. And you're like, eh, I don't know. He's bad against Green Bay. We need to get OBJ. And the final stage of the Cowboys is they dust off Minnesota yesterday easily, and they're the best team in the world. And if you look at their schedule, all you cowboy haters out there, just take a seat. They're going to have a lot of laughs and a lot of hope because now they get the giants at home,
Starting point is 00:09:51 the Colts at home, the Texans at home, and they're at the Jags. So it's a lot of Ws for the Cowboys coming up. And there's going to be a lot of hope. It's going to be a firework show. And listen, is Dallas a fun team? Absolutely. Are they a talented team? Oh, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:10:06 Are they a Super Bowl winning team? I don't think so. but there's more twists and turns than Yellowstone, so I'm into it. And I will say this about Dallas. There's a lot of things to be optimistic about. Tony Pollard has emerged home run hitter at running back. OBJ appears to be leaning Dallas. The offensive line's playing better.
Starting point is 00:10:27 Young offensive line is playing better. DAC is now healthy. And they appear to have a two-headed monster at running back where DAC isn't relied upon to throw 40 times a game. The Cowboys are 3 and 0 when DAC is throwing the ball 27 times are fewer. So there is a recipe for Dallas to win, and that recipe is don't rely on DAC to do a Mahomes or a Josh Allen or a Burrell or a Brady where he's got to throw 40 times a game. But I know a lot of you love the Cowboys, and I know a lot of you hate the Cowboys,
Starting point is 00:11:01 and I'm just here for the ride. There was stage one, week one, then the Cooper Rush stage, then the Dak returns and we're not good enough stage. And now we're in the stage where, oh, we can do this every week, blow everybody away. We're the best team in the world. And I'm not bothered by it. I'm here for the laughs and fun and optimism. I'm here.
Starting point is 00:11:22 Jerry Jones, after the W. Do you see this team as being one of the teams that's in it for a championship? Or how do you look at this team that you've seen in this? A resounding yes. Yes. Unequivocally, yes. I think we've had adversity. We very easily could have some more adversity.
Starting point is 00:11:42 But if we can get in there healthy and still have games like the last two we just had on the road. And so, yes, I think if we use the experience of what we're having in the season, then we're going to be playoff ready. But I sure do think that what I see out here right now is the team like that you could go get a Super Bowl with. All right. There's no reason to hate. We're getting close to Thanksgiving. It's the holidays.
Starting point is 00:12:13 We share food. We share love. Not everybody shares that optimism. But there's a lot of things to be happy for. The O line's getting better. Dak wasn't sacked. He's healthy. Pollard's a home run hitter.
Starting point is 00:12:26 OBJ's a lean. Defense Micah. I mean, did we or did we not predict? J. Mack predicted. Watch Micah have the play early in the game and he did. It's fun, though, right? The stages of the Cowboys roller coaster. Sean Payton next hour, Michael Vic this hour,
Starting point is 00:12:45 Colin Wright, Colin Wrong, the start of next hour. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-taped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
Starting point is 00:14:37 I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little camp? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at It Podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:15:00 I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed cracks. I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really?
Starting point is 00:15:19 Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests.
Starting point is 00:15:43 I'm talking Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses.
Starting point is 00:16:02 Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way.
Starting point is 00:16:25 Open your free, our heart radio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. It is great to have you here on a Monday. some USC thoughts coming up, some Raider thoughts. Sean Payton next hour. Michael Vic, what a pleasure to have you in. I am on cloud nine. I am feeling good.
Starting point is 00:16:44 It was that you can't make me, you can't make me frown today. It's impossible. Life is good. So, listen, I don't want to be a bully with Zach Wilson. He didn't have much of a run game. And Bill Belichick's a great defensive coach. So it's not like I thought
Starting point is 00:17:03 Zach Wilson and the Jets offense was going to run up a surplus of points and productivity. But here's our reality now with Zach Wilson who loses and completes nine throws. Okay, here's our reality. It's because of generational changes, as we've discussed many times on this show,
Starting point is 00:17:24 about football and how it's changed in high school and college, that the NFL and college are now married together. The leap is not as hard. that in high school, seven-on-seven camps, kids are more ready to play now in the NFL out of college. They get 10,000 throws at the time they're 14 years old. So I no longer give you three years to prove you can make it. I give you Thanksgiving year two. Just like we give coaches, a year and a half, I better see signs. And with Sala, I'm seeing signs. Passionate defense, in the right spot. They've drafted it well. He's developing players. First year was bumpy. I didn't
Starting point is 00:18:00 like what I saw first year, Jets were wildly uneven. But year two, Sala has it going. This team has his footprints all over it. It's a solid defense. It's like the Niners. It's going a million miles an hour. It's feisty. It's physical. It's passionate. It makes plays. Sala appears to be, you got the right coach. And I love the GM. So let's be positive. In this whole league, owner, GM coach, quarterback of the key. GM coach, look like he got the right guys. Owner I don't love. Let's go to the quarterback.
Starting point is 00:18:35 What did I say about him early? I said in college, he played four good teams. He was 0 and 4. Utah twice, Washington, Coastal Carolina. He beat up on a lot of, you know, North Alabama, Texas State, Troy. And the problem with me was Zach Wilson was, even his college tape.
Starting point is 00:18:56 He was spectacular regularly. But the NFL's not about that. coordinators don't give you a lot of spectacular. Maybe once, twice a game unless you're Mahomes. You don't get spectacular. You've got to grind it out. He's a little small. He's a little undisciplined.
Starting point is 00:19:12 He tends to be a little cocky. And the little stuff is hard. The little stuff like acknowledging when you're the issue. Josh Allen stinks. He admits it. Joe Burrow stinks. He admits it. Lamar Jackson stinks.
Starting point is 00:19:24 He admits it. Aaron Rogers stinks. He admits it. Zach Wilson struggling with the I'm awful and it's not my fault. As an offense, though, I mean, you guys are only able to score three points. The defense only lets up three points. I mean, do you feel like you let the defense down?
Starting point is 00:19:40 No. No. Thank you. The room's open. Listen, Robert Sala, this is New York. This ownership is impatient. Robert Sala is sitting around thinking, how long do I got to wait? My GM's giving me players.
Starting point is 00:19:58 I'm building the great defense. it's the offense holding us back. So, you know, this is not a pat on the back thing. And it also, he didn't get a lot of help from the run game. And Belichick's a great coach. I wasn't expecting him to throw for 240 yards. 160, touchdown, no picks, make smart plays. But you got to complete more than nine throws.
Starting point is 00:20:20 And when the game's over, you got to own that you stink. So it's the little things. But again, you know, he is. is very reliant on the spectacular. It's why I compared him to Johnny Mansell. Yeah, Mahomes can do spectacular. So can burrow. But you got to be accurate. In 20 starts, he has one game with a passer rating over 100. It's consistency in this league. You got to be able to hit the stuff in the flat, the curl patterns. Got to pick up first downs on third down. That's the league. You can do an occasional spectacular thing, but coordinators, this is not the Mountain West
Starting point is 00:20:58 conference. You know, you're not, you're not facing Troy or North Alabama where you got grad assistants actually putting on a headset. Now, this is like they take away the spectacular. They make you play left-handed. I just don't see it. Rookie receiver Garrett Wilson was even harsher on his team's offense. We all got to be more detail. We all got to have a better plan. It's not okay. I mean, straight up, it's not okay. How many total yards we had? Yeah, the . Not going to fly. So, you know, we got the dudes.
Starting point is 00:21:33 It's time. You know, it's time to be consistent. It's time to start winning the games we should win. I mean, they ain't even scoring offense, and we loves the game. So me personally, I mean, we got to, me personally, I just feel like we got to use this as, take it for what it is. We got our ass be. Yeah. Well, J. Mack, you tell me, Thanksgiving year two, I want to see something with a co-execkel.
Starting point is 00:21:58 be it a Robert Sala or a Brandon Staley. Thanksgiving year two. I'm going to hold my coaches to that. I used to give my quarterbacks the second, maybe third year. We're getting close to Thanksgiving year two. What do you see? There you go. That's exactly it.
Starting point is 00:22:15 Colin, I don't want to hammer the kid. He's a young kid. Yeah, same here. But that performance after the game, when he's getting asked about the offense do enough. Like, listen, Colin, if I stink it up here on the show, I'm going to accept responsibility.
Starting point is 00:22:30 That's what leaders do. You mentioned Josh Allen in the locker room. Accountability is everything. Well, especially... He took none of it. Yeah, especially when you're the most important player on a team, touching the ball 50, 60 times. Now, listen, I do think Robert Sala is doing a good thing
Starting point is 00:22:45 in giving him the vote of confidence. You don't want to strip the confidence. They do have a layup this week against the Bears who will be without Justin Fields, we'll talk about shortly. It's not over for the Jets, Colin. I know, listen, I know they're not good, offensively. It ain't over. This season is, they still have a legitimate shot at the
Starting point is 00:23:01 playoffs. We'll break down the schedules later, but hold back the laughter, Colin. At defense, by the way, dead last in the league last year. Top five unit this year, hands down. It was a gut-wrenching loss. Thank you for the tweet, by the way. I saw that. That was for a kind of you. I can feel your pain
Starting point is 00:23:17 on that part return. Stung. Jay Mack with a news. No, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Let's start with Justin Fields. One of the most exciting players over the last month in the NFL injured his non-throwing shoulder on, I think, the final drive against the Falcons. Tried to play through it. Colin, this is less about the shoulder and just a wear and tear on Justin Fields.
Starting point is 00:23:41 He ran 14 times in the first half. What are you doing? Well, it's a two-sided coin. When you're young as a quarterback, Russell Wilson, a lot of the, Josh Allen, as you're trying to figure out the speed of NFL defense, defenses, use the gifts God gave you your feet. Lamar did it. Josh Allen did it. Farve did it. Justin Fields is doing it. So as he's trying to figure out the speed and the concepts defensively, run for first downs.
Starting point is 00:24:08 I'm for it. But go ask Kyler or Russell Wilson or Lamar. They all put weight on. Why? This is not college. So this is what happens. Marcus Mariotto was a guy that loved to run. You figure out Michael Vick will be on later this hour.
Starting point is 00:24:22 You figure out very quickly in this league after about a year of it, and you're like, I've got to put on weight, I'm going to stop. So what you're hoping for fields, the goal has always been every six games, you run a little less and a little less. And then you get to year three, and you run about four times. But he's not at that level yet, and they don't have the gifts or the offensive line to allow him to do that. So I feel great sympathy for him because I do see a really substantial athlete growing in front of us. Yeah, the big problem is the Falcons have no pass rush and they sack fields four times. And they're like in his jersey the whole game. Yep.
Starting point is 00:24:59 So, you know, you've got to really think about it. Think about it going forward, Colin. You've got a good young quarterback. We think maybe he's the future in Chicago. You're three and eight. Do you want to risk further injury to this guy going forward? Currently, they have the number three pick in the draft, which is awesome. There's a good left tackle at Northwestern.
Starting point is 00:25:14 Will Anderson from Alabama, the edge rusher, Jalen Carter, Interior, Georgia. If you lose games, I think there's something here. So Trevor Simeon is the backup. He could get the start this week against the Jets. Would you force Justin Fields back out there, bone shoulder? No. No offensive line. And the Jets defense can get after it.
Starting point is 00:25:33 We know that. They sack back Jones six times yesterday. No, I just, I like, this is what Pittsburgh's doing with Kenny Pickett. Put the kid out there. Let him do his thing. This is not a championship year. You've got to rebuild the roster for him. But if I'm a Bears fan, that hurts.
Starting point is 00:25:48 But this season has been such a win. even the losses are encouraging. Competitive. All right, next up, your Bengals. I think you had this in the Blaz and Five. Cincinnati, topples, Pittsburgh. Good second half performance by the Bengals defense. T. Higgins.
Starting point is 00:26:02 T. Higgins was good. Burrow had 355 and four tutties. Cincinnati did not have Jamar Chase and lost Joe Mix into a concussion. They've got nice depth here offensively. P. Ryan, I can't believe he had three touchdowns. Bengals get the win. But look at the schedule. coming up. I know. At Tennessee this week.
Starting point is 00:26:24 Versus Kansas City. Then they get Deshawn Watson who will be back. And Colin, after that, Tampa Bay, New England, Buffalo, Baltimore. There is no tougher schedule the rest of the way than the Bengals. So they might be six and four. Is this a playoff team? I think they are, and I think they're going to be in a series of close games. Something significant in that game if you watched it, was once again, the Bengals defense, after half, tends to shut down because Pickett was moving the ball. So this is what the Bengals do. They fall behind. They fall behind. Burrell leads them back, and their defense clamps down for the final hour and a half, and then they come back and win. That's kind of what they do. I think they actually match up
Starting point is 00:27:09 very well with Buffalo, and they match up very well with Kansas City because they can run the football. They got two really good running backs. And they're going to get Jamar Chase back here in a couple of weeks. So I think it's going to be down to the wire, but it's a really good football team. I've watched them now every game, points of every game. It's the same recipe every week. When they get into these third and longs, they struggle so when they can keep ahead of the chains a little bit, they're a better team. But that defense, after half, every week, adjusts and shuts people down. I mean, it is one thing to shut down, Kenny Pickett. This Tennessee team, I think they sackborough nine times in the playoff game last year.
Starting point is 00:27:43 This is a big game, and not to bring up the Jets again, but they have the same record as the Bengals did beat them head to head, but the Jets have a far easier schedule, Colin, than the Bengals. I don't think Joe Burroughs a lock for the playoffs just yet. And finally, look at you laughing. Greg Burhalter announced Sunday. Tyler Adams will be the captain for the U.S. in Qatar. Yeah. He's only 23 years old, youngest captain at the World Cup.
Starting point is 00:28:06 Youngest for the U.S. since 1950. Wow. He's also the first African American to be captain throughout a World Cup tournament. So very exciting stuff for U.S. soccer. off, I believe, in 90 minutes. England, you saw that match this morning. I knew we had the morning meeting. England was, I think they scored a touchdown,
Starting point is 00:28:24 missed the extra point, right? Yeah, six goals against Iran. But US Wales this morning should be fun. Yeah. J-Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Ly News. You could just give the
Starting point is 00:28:40 Heisman to Caleb Williams now. I know you don't want to hear it, but you watch Patrick Mahalms on Sunday night last night. Caleb Williams, a little bit the comp on Saturday night. 33 touchdowns and three picks. And don't tell me the Pac-12's no good. Actually,
Starting point is 00:28:58 it's the second best conference in the country this year easily. Oregon State, Washington, Oregon, Utah, USC, UCLA, all good teams. His loss this year was 380 yards, five touchdowns, and 60 yards rushing. Like Mahomes, it's more than just football. It's mobility and leadership and crisis management. He is better in big spots and big games.
Starting point is 00:29:21 This Trojan team has one draftable defensive player currently. He's a defensive end. He's really good. He'll probably go in the second round. They have two draftable offensive players, a guard, Andrew Vorhees and Jordan Addison. Caleb's not eligible for the draft this year. And yet, they don't have Michigan talent, Ohio State talent. They don't have Georgia talent, LSU talent, or Bama talent right now. And yet, he has reached. He has reached, shaped not only the offense, but the football program. This is what Mahomes is like. If you had to put Mahomes at a place with a bigger brand, go look at Mahomes' highlights.
Starting point is 00:29:57 Go look at Caleb Williams' highlights. They got two draftable players on that offense, but he's brought back the flare and the spectacular and the crazy and the fun to a football program that in Pete Carroll's heydays sort of stole L.A.'s heart. He is a completely different level player. I've had multiple executives tell me if he was eligible as a sophomore, he would easily be the number one pick. He is a sensational talent, good head on his shoulders, all this while having a brand commercials everywhere and his classes. It is a ton to balance.
Starting point is 00:30:33 But we ask a lot of our college and professional quarterback. So you know what? It probably helps him to the NFL that it can balance all these things, grades, books, brands, endorsements, football, practice. he is doing it brilliantly. He faced another really good college quarterback Saturday, and Dorian Thompson, a very, very good college quarterback, excellent, in fact. And you could see the gap.
Starting point is 00:30:57 I said last week on the show, I said, USC's going to win it, and this kid's the reason why he'll probably make a play late in the game. Running left, throwing right, running right, throwing left, throwing deep. Just a beautiful thing to watch. I don't see a hole in his game. I mean, I said it years ago.
Starting point is 00:31:16 Andrew Luck, I told you as a sophomore, is going to be different. I told you Trevor Lawrence would star. He's the next one. Everything. In crisis. Management, smart. You can just watch him growing, too. He was a little more temperamental early in the season.
Starting point is 00:31:32 You can see he's evolved a little bit. He's not quite as emotional. He's not afraid. He can bark at Lincoln Riley. They can bark back. Ten minutes later, they're all good. So he takes to coaching. but here was Lincoln on our show last week on sort of what makes this kid just different.
Starting point is 00:31:50 He has a cool athletic skill set the way that he can move, break tackles, his threat as a runner. But you combine that with an arm that is in a vision for the game that's really, really unique, especially for a guy his age. You know, you see touch throws. You see the bombs down the field. He really can from a skill set-wise, do it all, change arm angles. And then he's got a cool and tangible side to him too. He's a good leader.
Starting point is 00:32:16 He's a competitor. He's done a good job here early on. Our time here at SC, help him bring this roster together. You know, when you watch all these rebuild programs, Texas, Miami, USC, a lot of these big brands, LSU, there is something that's pretty obvious. If you bring in an offensive coach and you have great quarterback play and maybe one or two really nice weapons, boy, you can win fast in college football now. You can turn it around fast. LSU and USC have turned it around fast. I said Friday, I think they both eventually lose before the end of the season.
Starting point is 00:32:49 I think they're both very good. I don't think they're great. I think Georgia's great. I think there have been certain halves in which Ohio State's been great. Outside of that, there's a lot of good in college football. Georgia's great. Ohio State in moments is great. Not as consistent as Georgia.
Starting point is 00:33:07 But if you can't spot it with that kid, it's different. I mean, it is. The comp with Mahomes feels really accurate. Now, and he's got a good head on his shoulders, and it's going to be hard for him because he's going to hear how great he is for the next year and a half. He is going to hear how spectacular he is, and Los Angeles has ruined a lot of adults. I don't think it'll ruin him, but it certainly made my Saturday.
Starting point is 00:33:31 A lot of fun. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. He's by Carmen. I'm Dan Byard. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at a podcast. I'm Sam Jette.
Starting point is 00:36:02 And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what? went down and tried to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:36:26 We also have AIDS on the table right now, so. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:01 I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, We get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth.
Starting point is 00:37:25 Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have really. real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way.
Starting point is 00:37:43 Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the hard way and listen now. All right. Welcome back. Michael Vic, four pro balls. 13 NFL seasons is joining us. You know, the quarterback position is interesting now. There's more small quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:38:04 Russell Wilson came into the league. Well, you and Russell started. Yeah. And so then I think you both got Mansell drafted and Kyler drafted and Baker drafted. When you came into the league, most guys were 6'4. Right. You could get a guy that was tall, but nobody liked 5-11. Right.
Starting point is 00:38:21 And so I watched some of these young guys, and I see it in college and pro football. And I love what I see. I do worry about seeing over the line. So Jalen Hertz tears it up last couple of weeks, struggled a little. bit. Do you think some of that is people figuring out how to clog the lanes, people making it, I mean, as Jaylins kind of come back down to earth, what do you see? I mean, around this time of the year, when teams got film on, you show your identity. Your identity is very known of what you're going to try to do and how you try to run your offense. And so that gives them an indicator on what you're going
Starting point is 00:39:01 do and they're able to anticipate. So what you have to do at this time of the year is start to switch things up a little bit because, you know, it all looks the same to a defense. And so now your job becomes a little harder at the quarterback position. I've experienced that a couple times where, you know, around week 11, week 12. Yeah, they start taking things away. Now you've got to go to your second, third, and fourth receivers and find out, you know, different ways to continue to run the offense and make it so it's effective.
Starting point is 00:39:30 Yeah, I mean, I think we forget sometimes. Just the regular season is 17 games. And these are the best coaches in the world, right? And then you get a buy week. And a lot of times you'll see an offense or a defense get fixed in a by week where the coaches get an extra four days to look at film. So now we were talking about Justin Fields. Now, Justin's a big, strong athlete.
Starting point is 00:39:52 I think they've discovered they have the quarterback they like. I would not risk it. I'd have no problem shutting it down. This means better draft picks. And this offensive line needs another pick or two. What do you make a field, his growth, his development, and the injury? It definitely feels like something is missing within the offense. I don't know if it's a big play guy.
Starting point is 00:40:13 I do think that and feel like they got the running game that's sustainable. But it's a big play piece that's missing from this offense. And I like what Justin has been able to do over the last couple weeks. He's maturing into his role. I do think he's running. a little bit more than he should be. It should be more of a timed, you know, more of timing within the offense, you know, one hits, two hits. As soon as his back foot hit, hit ball coming out, I would like to see more of a control, you know, offensive game plan. And that's on him. That's on him understanding,
Starting point is 00:40:47 you know, what has to happen, what needs to happen, and being able to anticipate throws and see guys open, throw them open. That's very important, you know, at this juncture in his career. And so I look back in my second year. Those are the things that I've worked hard on. Those are the things that I practiced hard. And obviously, it worked out for me in the game. So I want to see Justin in the pocket not improvising as much, only when he needs to, but the ball coming out and making throws that I know he can make. So we've talked, he's a Jets fan. And you guys both went to Virginia Tech. You transferred to James Madison. But we, you know, one of the things that's cruel about professional sports is that the harder you work in college, you go to the worst team,
Starting point is 00:41:31 often the worst owner. It's just unfair. The second thing is when you play quarterback, it's doubly unfair because you often go to a bad team and at 22, you're the face of a franchise in Atlanta. I lived it. Or New York. And so with Zach, I didn't love him out of college, but I'm seeing him misstep. Now, Baker did it in Cleveland.
Starting point is 00:41:53 It washes over. You do it in New York. You got six papers. Talk radio. So go back to your Atlanta years, the podium, the comments. Did you have moments where you were just over your skis a little bit early? Yeah, I remember walking into the building the first day and kind of looking around. And even my first game, preseason game in the stadium at the Georgia Dome and like looking around and saying to myself, this all belongs to me.
Starting point is 00:42:21 And if I want this to work, it's all going to be predicated. on what I do. And, you know, being the bus started to creep in and not being the bus was something that... And you heard it? Yeah, I heard those whispers. We didn't even have Twitter then.
Starting point is 00:42:37 We didn't have Facebook. We didn't have anything. But this was a mindset that I took on, like, that's not going to be the case. And so when I'm accepting all these responsibilities as a quarterback, I know, you know, this all depends on how much work I put in. And so when I watch Zach Wilson
Starting point is 00:42:52 and, you know, how he's developing, how he's maturing. Something's missing there. I don't know if it's with the offensive coordinator. You know, to go nine for 22 yesterday, I mean, that's just, in your second year, that's something that just shouldn't happen. And so I don't know what a disconnect is, but he should be doing a lot more. If I was him, I'd take a page out of Justin Fields' playbook when it, you know, when it's all not going well, then started to scramble, start to improvise, be a reason,
Starting point is 00:43:21 be a reason that your team have a chance that won in the game. I mean, it was 3-3 all the way into the end of the fourth quarter yesterday. And I know Zach Wilson is talented enough to make some plays outside of what the offensive coordinators, the plays that he's calling. He's capable of doing that. And that's what disappoints me in this situation. I know he can play better. Was there a moment for you?
Starting point is 00:43:42 Like we saw it very early, like there's stages. So Lamar comes out, goes six and one. You can see the talent. And there was a sense like, well, if you see it. a second time, can he throw on third down, can he throw a train, and gradually he's gotten better and better and better. When you go back to being a young quarterback, because we got Trevor Lawrence and we got Justin Fields and we got, we have a lot of
Starting point is 00:44:02 this stuff. Was there a light, light goes on moment for you? Was it year two, year three? Because you grew up generationally different. You didn't, you weren't on seven on seven camps with 10,000 throws in high school. It was harder in your generation. What was the difference year one, year two for you?
Starting point is 00:44:17 Year one, playing behind Chris Chandling and watching him. I like studied everything that he did. And Chris was, he was a mastermind in terms of mastering Dan Reeves' offense. And so I wanted to be that. And so coming into my second year, OTAs, training camp, I worked hard, and people don't know this, to be mentally as sharp and focused as Chris Chandler. And that put me in the position where I could go out and run the offense, you know, be decisive, anticipate throws, and ultimately it led to a great season in the Pro Bowl.
Starting point is 00:44:49 But it took a lot of hard work, Colin. It took a lot of dedication and Dan Reeves pulling me to the side saying, look, if you want to be one of the best in the league, here's how you're going to have to go about it. And I inquired about John Elway a lot. I asked about the things that John did. I seen Chris, and I wanted to chase that greatness how I could chase it. So it was a lot of things that was instilled in me from my head coach
Starting point is 00:45:13 that made me the player that I was at a young age at 22. I watched Caleb Williams Saturday night. I watched Mahomes left. I love Caleb. You love him? I love him. And there is a comp. You know, some of it is, it's hard to explain, but when I watch Mahomes play, it's almost like he sees the game in colors nobody else does.
Starting point is 00:45:35 Like sometimes he's throwing, the best way I would explain it is like some pitchers in baseball just know the corner. Greg Maddox lived on the corner. Kurt Schilling lived and I watch Mahomes play and some of it I don't think is teachable. It's not. It's very like Caleb. Some of it's just the way they see the game. They see open players. Instincts, you know, the belief in themselves.
Starting point is 00:46:02 It's like they got eyes in the back of the head. They do things. I watch Patrick do things and I wish I could have, you know, had a fraction of that. Because it makes the team so much better. And, you know, I always look at the Kansas City Chiefs. As long as they got Andy Reed. and Patrick Mahomes together and that guy, Travis Kelsey. They'll be good.
Starting point is 00:46:21 They will always be good. And we'll always have a chance at beating you to the finish line. You know, Andy, and I've said this, I think Mahomes is great, but it does matter to have that kind of coach. Go back with your days with Andy. What did Andy do to elevate you? And you said it was very quick. Right. It was quick because Andy was just demanding, detailed and demanding.
Starting point is 00:46:42 So he's going to put a lot on your plate, and then he's going to circle back with you two or three days later and see if you got to understand. understanding of what he's what he's trying to accomplish. So Andy likes to operate when he makes a play call, you know why the play call is coming in. So you know why. You know why. And then sometimes it got to a point where I can anticipate what was coming. Like the things that we worked on third down, when I hear it, you just smiled to yourself because automatic, I know this is a first down.
Starting point is 00:47:09 I'm prepared for this moment. I'm ready for this moment. Thank you, coach for sending that play. But you got to be coachable with him. But you got to be coachable. He'll bark. And you got it. Yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:47:17 That was the, I was talking to somebody this morning, they asked about Andy. Like, what is it about him? And I'm like, you know, what he demand out of you and what he's going to ask you to do, he's going to know if you're not prepared and if you didn't study. And so that alone will get you put on the bench. And he'll tell you, I bench you. You know, I play the next guy. I play the guy who's going to listen, who's going to, you know, go out there and do it the way I want it done.
Starting point is 00:47:43 And you got to respect that. That's great. That's amazing. So I said this about Mahal. before. I just find him as the face of the league. He's got an easiness with him. He's not a rigid kid. There's a looseness with him. And maybe it's his dad was a pro athlete. But he's like a kid that's like he trusts and respects Andy and he just lets him coach him and mold him. And then Andy knows he's so talented. He can't over coach him. And now it's to a point to your point is I had a chance
Starting point is 00:48:10 to spend some time with him over the summer. And you know, Andy still coaches, but it's like having a conversation with him, he allows Patrick to go out and kind of like freelance in practice. Call it your way. Make the checks you want to make. If you make a mistake, let's just talk about it. And Patrick is kind of running a lot of what's going on over there. Now, Andy, he's still the overseer, without a doubt. Respect now.
Starting point is 00:48:36 But Patrick is learning how to pretty much become an offensive coordinator on the field, if that makes sense. Oh, yeah. Yeah, so he's, when those players are being called, Patrick knows. Can you imagine if you got Andy Reed as a rookie? Andy always told me if he had me as a rookie that we'll have a couple of rings together. I believed it. I believed it. He caught me at the tail end of my career and thank God because that experience will help me with my experiences with young quarterbacks in the future,
Starting point is 00:49:05 whether I'm coaching the quarterback camp or just giving advice. And so I always lean on that coming from an offensive guru like Andy. You know, those moments that I spent with him was so invaluable that, you know, I'll never forget it. Great seeing you, man. It's good seeing you, too. Michael Vic, 13 years for Pro Bowls. Too bad you can't come out of retirement and quarterback the Jets. They could really.
Starting point is 00:49:29 I know. I just keep digging on McIntyre, the poor guy. Colin Wright, Colin Wrong. We start hour two and a Monday. How much fun is football? Is it great or what?
