This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's
superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
A win is a win.
A win is a win.
I don't care what I'm saying.
Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media.
Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show.
This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard,
but celebrated.
So let's get to it.
Listen to the Clifford show on the I Heart Radio app,
Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
And for more behind the scenes,
follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok.
On the Look Back at it podcast.
From 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84's big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year,
unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians,
and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Here we go on a Thursday.
The topic's all lined up.
How lucky you're going to live in Los Angeles.
It's the herd.
Wherever you may be, however you may be listening.
IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1.
It is great to have you in today.
I get some Raider talk, Baker-Mayfield talk.
Baseball team heads are going crazy.
What a great day of baseball.
Topics. Joy Taylor, how are you?
I'm great.
There's some of the two playing games weren't quite as thrilling.
No. Atlanta's very interesting.
We thought Atlanta would win.
Yes.
It's funny. Greg Popovich doesn't win as much like Belichick without his star, doesn't he?
It's funny how that works.
He would scold you for that call.
So let's start with this.
I've said before, Baker-Mayfield's not as interesting today as he was for the years
I was critical of him.
But he talked yesterday, went 90 minutes, and you know if Baker talks, I'm going to talk about it.
At this point, you know, he's probably not a franchise quarterback.
He's more of a bridge quarterback.
There's no real market for him.
There was a story out of Seattle today.
The Seahawks wouldn't mind him, but they're going to go with Drew Locke.
So there's really no market for him.
So yesterday, he sat down, and this happened months ago, I guess, but it was released yesterday.
It was sort of a rambling off the cuff, not terribly prepared.
90-minute conversation with a guy in a camo hat, probably a buddy.
I've said before, Baker talks too much, often too rambling, very impulsive.
So let's start with this.
This was what Baker had to say about for his new team, this is how he's going to approach
his new teammates.
I'm not going to force it.
I'm going to be myself because I feel like I tried to force it when things on the field
weren't going well in the past couple years.
I feel like I'm going to go in there and be myself
because that's worked for me in the past.
If I'm worried about getting them to like me,
what am I doing?
They don't care if I like them either.
They want their quarterback to win.
They're trying to get a paycheck.
If their team wins, they get paid.
So the guys that don't really personally like me,
that's fine.
But I have to have the respect.
And the way I do that is just working my ass off me and myself.
Because you can get sniffed out in a heartbeat if you're fake.
So you're not going to change.
I don't know.
I think I'd change a little.
The last four years have been snark, disappointment, combativeness, medical staff coaches.
Baker was in a hole.
He grabbed a shovel and just kept digging.
Once again, he talks too much.
It wasn't calculated.
It wasn't prepared.
90 minutes is way too long.
And go get a professional like Jim Gray.
That's what Brady did.
instead he admitted he has a Napoleon complex that booing bothers him, that the media bothers him.
Weakness, can't control his emotions, inability to adapt. I'm just going to do what I do.
Folks, most successful people, and what I'm about to say in my life has always been true with no exceptions.
The most successful people have a perfect personality match for their job.
I've known a thousand salespeople.
The dozen or so that are great are social, charismatic, affable,
they're great salespeople.
Their personality's perfect for it.
It doesn't mean you can't be a salesperson without those qualities,
but you're not going to be as good as the person who has the perfect personality match.
I've had three or four accountants.
The best accountant I currently have, super detailed.
regimented,
incredibly reliable.
He's great.
He wouldn't be a good salesperson,
and a salesperson wouldn't be a good accountant.
This is why Brady is so great,
and Peyton Manning was so great,
and John Elway was so great,
because their personalities,
Russell Wilson is so great.
Their personalities were perfect for the position,
are perfect.
To be a great franchise quarterback,
there are things that matter.
It's not your arm strength.
We've had a lot of guys without great arms.
It is toughness.
Baker is that, by the way.
Baker's tough.
I'll defend him forever on the toughness.
Emotional discipline, highly prepared, very accountable.
Never play a victim.
Fall on the sword for teammates.
Baker's an artist.
Baker's a linebacker, a wide receiver.
He's impulsive.
He's emotional.
He's off the cuff.
First thing in his mind comes right out of his mouth.
Russell Wilson's calculated children's hospitals, IG videos, Tom Brady podcast, gets Jim Gray, the documentary, he had control of the editing.
Yesterday was 90 minutes of rambling.
You grabbed a shovel, you're in a hole, stop digging.
Yesterday should have been about two things for Baker Mayfield.
Two things.
And this was done, I guess, a month ago.
A, what I've learned, and B, what I plan to do better.
Period.
Shut it down.
What I've learned, this is what I'm going to do better.
End of interview.
That's it.
Because right now, bro, there's no market for you.
None at all.
And I'm not anti-Baker.
I was right the first time.
I was right at the end of the year defending him because he was hurt and it wasn't
fair the criticism he got in Ohio. It was not fair. He's way better than that. And he is one of
the 32 best quarterbacks. Calculated, sometimes as a quarterback, you got to kind of manipulate.
You go to that podium. You can't say what you feel. You've got to fall on the sword for the team.
Eli Manning always spoke, always available after losses. Always wins. Teammates got the credit.
Losses. Eli always took the hit.
Is that what he truly believed, folks?
There's a million guys out there, tough guys.
Hey, I don't sell out for anybody.
Tom Brady's been selling out stadiums forever.
Give that a run.
It's a pretty cool life.
Baker, though, said, I've got no regrets in Cleveland.
Here it is.
Honestly, I have no regrets of my time in Cleveland
of what I tried to give to that place.
Right.
And true Clevelanders and true Browns fans know, know that.
I feel disrespected 100% because I was told one thing and they completely did another.
That's what I'm in the middle of right now.
And you know what?
Okay.
I got my taste of it because I've had four different head coaches in four years, a bunch of different coordinators.
I've had talk about the highs.
They always come back.
No regrets?
None?
Called out the medical staff fighting with coaches, calling out coaches.
No regrets?
I don't think he's built for it.
I think he's talented and therefore is good enough, just talented enough.
And he is talented.
He's a really talented guy.
He's talented enough to be a franchise quarterback.
But he's not ideally built for it.
He can't help himself.
Tom Brady every day wakes up and just leans in to what he truly is.
Baker Mayfield every day wakes up and has to fight his instincts for what he wants to be.
it's so hard for him.
It's not a natural fit.
He'll land somewhere, but there's an argument to be made.
He did himself no favors yesterday.
The GMs impressed by that are the kind of GMs that were in Cleveland that drafted him and got fired.
The chutzpah, the ego, the victimhood, the lack of accountability.
I'll just do me.
Oh, yo, yoy, he needs a better manager, maybe a better agent.
All right.
So I saw this yesterday.
Clayton Kershaw had a perfect game
and they pulled him after 80 pitches.
Oh my word, the seam heads in America were beside themselves.
Baseball writers, even respected ones, were apoplectic.
Oh my God.
The Dodgers were right.
Let me give you the ABCs of why this was the right decision.
A, athletes are not here for your enjoyment or mine.
It's a business.
Colin
It's only been 23 perfect games ever
Hey champ let me give you another number
Clayton Kirshaw's got one left arm
Take care of it
B, pitch counts are part of baseball
They have been forever
C, the Dodgers, this is how they do business
Analytics, they've been way ahead of the curve
D, Kershaw was cool with it
He got hurt all at the end of last year
He got hurt
He's an old pitcher.
He knows his arm.
E.
It was a shortened spring training because of the lockout.
So he didn't get the work he usually does.
How about F?
This is the best baseball roster people are saying in 50 plus years.
They got bigger fish to fry than an award than a magical feat.
Congrats on the whole in won at a golf tournament.
That guy never wins the tournament.
Clayton Kirshan and the Dodgers have a chance at history.
Remember, the only World Series he's won was in that pandemic shortened season with about 60 games.
He wants a real one.
I mean, he gets credit for that, but he wants a real one.
He's a Hall of Famer, got a stack of cash, and he knows his body better than baseball writers do.
Kirshah was okay with it.
Here he was afterwards.
Those were selfish goals, and we're trying to win, you know, and that's,
that's really all we're here for.
I would have loved this stage, but bigger things, man, bigger things.
I mean, blame it on the lockout, blame it on me, not picking up a baseball until January,
but, I mean, there's no, I mean, my slider was horrible lost two innings.
So I just, it didn't have the bite.
It was kind of, it was time.
Clayton Kershaw does not owe me, you, or baseball, anything.
What did LeBron James say last week about the scoring title?
LeBron said, pursuing a scoring title is beneath me.
Frankly, he's right.
He really is.
Scoring titles for Michael Jordan?
Who cares?
Scoring titles for, you know, a guy who's been a six-man?
That's a big deal.
Clayton Kershaw is above awards.
Clayton Kershaw is about winning games.
He is arguably the greatest left-hander of all time alongside Sandy Kofax,
and I would argue there's more talent in baseball now than ever.
It's probably harder today, but I'm not a seamhead.
It's discouraging to see that people who cover the sport can't wrap their brains around this simple fact.
These great athletes are not here for our enjoyment.
Their health and their well-being, and they know their bodies better than I do, certainly, and you do,
are paramount.
The skipper got it, the Dodgers got it,
Kershaw got it.
Derek Carr's got a new contract.
We'll talk about that.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd
weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific

Clever Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits,

this platform became bigger

The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast.
It's a space for honest,

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast.
Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a
brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the
biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business
sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple
podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. You're now entering the no bull zone sponsored by credible
great rates, none of the bull. Um, just because
of what I do for a living, I have had to, I have to negotiate contracts every few years.
Okay. And when you negotiate a contract, and many of you have done this, some will do it,
some won't do it. It's fine. I don't love doing it. I have to hire a representative.
I don't want to go, you know, face to face with my bosses and injure our, you know, puncture
our relationship, right? So when you go into a contract negotiation, this is pretty obvious,
but I'm just going to lay it out for you. You get some stuff and you don't get stuff. Nobody gets
everything. Tom Brady didn't get everything. You don't get everything. You don't get everything.
And so it's very important.
There's only eight players in the league that have a no trade clause, meaning you can't send
them to a crappy team.
Russell Wilson had one.
Mahomes has one.
And now Derek Carr has one.
And it's important to note that Derek Carr, Mahomes, took less money.
Russell Wilson could make more money.
But they're not just about money.
They like money.
I like money.
You like money.
We all like money.
but those quarterback said, I'll take a little less money,
but you're not sending me to a crappy team.
I want to win games.
I want to win games.
So I'll take a little less money.
I'll get better teammates.
And you can't trade me to a crappy team.
Aaron Rogers said, I don't need a no trade clause.
Just give me the most money you can.
Isn't that interesting?
He signed that contract with Green Bay knowing,
we know this now, knowing Devante Adams was leaving,
still signed it.
knowing it would make the Green Bay front office trapped, not a lot of flexibility with his deal to get star receivers.
That's when they're not bidding on anybody.
Aaron didn't care.
Give me the most money.
I want to be the highest paid guy.
He has every right to do that.
But Derek Carr signed a contract yesterday.
It's like Patrick Mahomes.
Like Russell Wilson.
It's not all the money he could have gotten.
And it has a no trade clause.
You can't ship me off to a lousy franchise.
I'm not going to allow that.
I want to go to a winner because I'm about winning.
Here's Derek Carr.
Everyone looks at like certain numbers and they're going to say,
oh, well, you know, they're not going to get the whole picture of how it's structured and how we did things.
So we made sure, you know, guys like Chandler, guys like Devante,
guys like hopefully Hunter and Foster and those guys can stay here, you know, the way we structured it.
You know, I went through a heartbreak already last time I signed my contract.
My best friend left.
You know what I mean?
And I didn't want that to ever happen again.
People tell you what matters to them.
Derek Carr's telling you, winning matters.
I'm going to take less so I get more good players.
And if you do get rid of me, I get a say no to a lousy franchise.
That's the Mahomes deal.
Not all the owners in the NFL and the NBA care about winning.
They don't.
the guys that own the bucks care about winning.
Right?
Steve Ballmer with the clippers, that dude wants to win.
Not all NBA and NFL owners are about Jim or say in Indianapolis.
That dude wants to win.
Carson Wentz drove him nuts.
Get him out of town.
I don't care.
I respect that.
Because you think all these owners care about winning.
No, they don't.
A lot of them, I'm getting the check.
Dan Snyder doesn't care about winning.
Washington.
Winnings, he'd like to win.
A lot of people say they'd like to win.
A lot of quarterbacks say they'd like to win.
Aaron would like to win.
Aaron would like to win, he took money.
Because in a contract negotiation, even Aaron Rogers, you don't get everything.
So Aaron's choice, just give me the money.
I don't care about not.
You can trade me anywhere at the end if I get my money.
Pat Mahomes, Derek Carr, Russell Wilson, it's not that.
They're going to take a little bit less.
You're not going to be able to put me on an island with a bunch of stiffs.
I totally respect that.
I'm not saying you can't just take the money.
Like the wide receiver, go take the money.
Quarterbacks, coaches, your legacy's built on playoff wins and Super Bowls.
Love what Derek Carr did.
I said this this week.
There's 12 quarterbacks in this league that are capable, in my opinion, of winning a Super Bowl.
Derek Carr is one of them.
Maybe closer to 12 than one or two, but he's one of them.
Good day for the Raiders.
Joy with the News.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the Hurdline News.
Well, we had some NBA playing games last night,
and the hawks were dominant in their win over the Hornets to keep their season alive.
Trey Young bounced back from a slow start, 24 points in Atlanta beat Charlotte 132-103.
So now they will play the Cavs on Friday for the final playoff spot.
In the east, while in the west, the Pelicans are still in the hunt.
C.J. McCullum at a game high 32 points, and they beat the Spurs 113.
So they will play the Clippers on Friday for the eight-seat in the conference.
Okay, Clippers are going to beat the Pelicans, and the calves are going to beat the Hawks.
So that means that the heats will play the Cavs.
Number one seed will play the eight C, which will be the Cavs.
The Heat are going to win that series pretty convincingly.
If Jared Allen was healthy for the Cavs, it would be a much more interesting series.
But an older veteran team is going to be a young talented team.
So Miami will beat.
And then it'll be Celtics Nets, Bucks, Bulls, Sixers, Raptors.
I cannot wait to watch Nets Celtics.
It's a really exciting first round.
Oh, no, it's fantastic first round.
Fantastic.
And then in the Western Conference, you'll have the Sons against the winner of the Pelicans or Clippers.
Clippers.
Probably win that convincingly.
But then you have Grizzlies Timberwolves, the two youngest teams in the league.
That's going to be incredible.
I'll take the Grizz.
I would also take the Grizzlies, but it's still going to be a really fun series.
And you have Warriors Nuggets.
I got to tell you something.
Be very careful about it.
Be very careful.
The best shooting team in the NBA,
the All-Star break has been Denver.
And Jamal Murray, I just read this yesterday,
Jamal Murray may play in the playoffs.
I didn't know that.
So we can dig that up.
But if he came back,
Warriors are...
If the Warriors are healthy,
they should win.
I'm taking the Warriors.
But I also think it's going to be close.
And then you have Mavs jazz,
which is also very interesting now because we don't know the status of Luca.
That's a question mark.
If Luca's healthy, I would take the Dallas Mavericks.
We don't know if he is.
also Quinn Snyder is a really good coach, and if Luca's not 100%, he will manipulate this series.
And I would, that one could be the best series.
And the reason being is we won't see Luca be playing 40 minutes a night.
And if that's the case, Dallas could be in trouble.
The problem with Luca is, and we don't talk about it as much as we probably should,
because we're constantly talking about Anthony Davis coming in and out of shape,
and we're giving Zion all these problems.
Luca does not take great care of his body.
And not saying that's why he's injured right now,
but he's notorious for not eating great and relying on his talent.
And I don't think they want to risk.
Like if you're the Mavs,
do you risk trying to brush him back from this injury?
We've seen how that goes in the playoffs.
I don't play him game one, and I just see you the outcome.
And then if we lose game one, I try to play him a little.
I mean, it really is an outcome.
If I took a two-o lead on Utah, I wouldn't play him.
If I'm in the whole O2, game three, I probably have to play them if he can play.
So that's one of those.
Remember the Warriors that had the Kevin Durant stuff?
Well, that's not saying, but that was a catastrophe.
They brought him back too soon.
So you have to be very careful with that.
So the Celtics and Nets kick off their first round series on Sunday.
I love that the first round is so interesting.
Like normally we're just like, all right, this is going to be soon.
No, no, there's no, there is no, we said this all year.
Phoenix?
I mean, Phoenix feels like the only one that's like that's probably going to be a
sweep. Yeah, yeah. I think, by the way, what the NBA got lucky, the team that's a tough matchup for Phoenix is the clippers.
And so they won't sweep the clippers. So the first round for Phoenix could be much harder than the subsequent rounds after it.
Yeah. Well, Ben Simmons is reportedly getting closer to making his Brooklyn debut. According to Brian Winhorse, it could happen during the series.
He is targeting game four, five, or six to make his first appearance as a net. Now that is, of course,
course, assuming that the series would go past game four.
He is a riddle, a riddle wrapped in an enigma.
What is going on?
I don't, I have no idea, but I also don't know.
Look, the idea of Ben Simmons coming back is obviously very exciting in this situation.
But he's not a plug-and-play player.
He hasn't played since June 20th, 2021.
I know, but they're going to ask him to play eight minutes a half.
Yes. And maybe you get some defense out of him.
I am for that.
Right. But how much is he going to contribute?
I know.
If things go badly, what's the risk of that?
Because now you have an entire offseason to discuss how he's got to adjust.
This is a new team, a new system.
He hasn't played basketball in almost a year.
I don't want to name drop, but comedian David Spade emailed me two days ago.
He did. And David's a great guy.
We got him on the show before.
Yeah. He said, can you explain the Ben Simmons thing?
Is he hurt?
and this is what I would tell David and everybody.
We don't know.
No, he is, he has been hurt.
I guess.
He had a back issue.
No, he had a back issue.
He had a herniated disc in his back.
What was going on in Philadelphia was not an injury.
But since he's been in Brooklyn, it's been a back injury.
Like he got a.
So can he shoot now or what?
No, I'm assuming no.
Why would that have changed?
But that's what I'm saying?
Like, what version of Ben Simmons are we even going to get if he is out there?
And I don't know how he fits with all this stuff.
You know, because I'm not getting practice video.
report. So I find him fascinating. I'll go back and say this again. I thought he was going to be,
I thought he was going to be kind of a less likable Magic Johnson, 610, better defender than
magic, great distributor, finish at the rim, and eventually figure out how to shoot. Because his body
type was so unique. Now, he was never going to be magic. The, you know. Well, he doesn't have the
personality. Yeah, I mean, magic is just bigger than life. Everybody loves magic. And that's not Ben.
he's moody, but it's just been a massive disappointment.
It's chaos, but we're still waiting to see how it all works out.
And Woe has reported there's a real chance that the Southlicks get Robert Williams back during
the series as well.
Game six would be the four-week mark since he had surgery on the meniscus in his left knee.
So that series is going to be very interesting.
Tasty.
So the Cowboys are sitting with the 24th pick in the first round of the draft.
It's not one of the more star-studded drafts that we've seen.
but apparently that might not stop Jerry Jones from trying to move up
if there's someone that Dallas really wanted to get.
I would trade up this raft and just going in as much as you can say about it
until you see what's there or who's on the other line.
But yeah, I would trade up to since we're down as low as we are
in those first two or three rounds if we had a chance to
and somebody that we had really coveted was sitting at the bottom
and we were able to trade up and get him.
By the way, they need a tackle.
They need another receiver.
They have nine picks in the draft.
One pick in each of the first four rounds.
I'm for this.
If you told me they landed one of the top four tackles
because Lyle Collins has gone and Tyron Smith,
so they have to get a tackle.
And there's like four great ones
and then another four or five solid ones.
If you told me they moved up to get a tackle
and a receiver.
And this is a good draft for tackles and receivers.
And instead of nine picks, they got five.
I'd be like, because we know,
the roster's fine, but it's an offensive league.
We don't trust McCarthy.
They cannot be below average at tackle.
And right now...
No, they have to have a great...
The way that this team is set up,
they have to have a great offense.
Good to great offensive lines.
Yes.
I have no...
Do you like Jerry saying this, though?
Yeah, what he's saying is I'm open for business.
Most people in this draft joy are moving backwards.
Yeah.
Jerry's saying, I'll go up.
I don't think, again, the New Orleans Saints,
people are banging on the Saints for the Philadelphia deal,
but what they need is a wide receiver and a tackle like Dallas.
So the needs for the Saints and the Cowboys are the same thing,
and both are saying there's some good premium stuff up there.
Right, this is a draft to do that.
It's probably gone by the 17th, 18th pick.
So, you know, again, I don't think it's a great draft.
I think this will be a very interesting scout draft.
And listen, I do not envy scouts.
I find it fascinating that you have to risk your name,
predicting what a young kid coming out of college is going to do at the next level.
But because we're banging so much on how this is not a high-level talent draft,
and there's no real stars, and it's good, it's not great.
I do wonder how we're going to look back on this draft in about three years
and see if we were all right about that.
You know, listen, I like the process and the architecture of a draft.
I don't care about the players.
But the players, notwithstanding, I like the draft because I like
watching teams try to fill holes and spaces and I think it's a blast.
I also love seeing, you know, I was watching, who was it,
Juju Smith-Schuster when he got the call from the Steelers.
Like, I love watching Draft Day, like the moments with the families and stuff.
That's why the draft, I mean, obviously we're not going back to this,
but when everyone had to have their home cams was so cool because you don't get to see all
of them because some of them are at Draft Day, which is going to be a scene in Vegas, by the way.
Good stuff, Joy with the News.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd Lie News.
By the way, I started my show saying, I'm with the Dodgers, I'm with Clayton Kershaw,
pulling him for a perfect game.
He was injured last year.
He had a reduced spring training, a shortened spring training, and he didn't have his best
stuff.
He said after the game he was okay with it.
Now, many of you, I tried to fight off people yesterday on social media, which is always
a worthless cause.
People said, well, Colin, Colin, you said in the last couple weeks, you were really against
NBA guys taking games off.
Oh, brother, you don't see the difference?
NBA commissioner Adam Silver,
the commissioner of the sport,
expressed concern, deep concern
in his state of the union last week,
saying he thinks it hurts the league
when multiple stars every night
take nights off and don't play when they could.
This was Clayton Kershaw
pitching for seven innings.
It didn't take the night off.
What he said was, I don't have my best stuff, 15 years in this league.
This is not a concern for the Dodgers, Kershaw, the league.
He didn't take the night off.
He gave you an unbelievable performance.
He just didn't want to extend it because of health concerns.
Why do I have to explain that?
NBA stars who could play but refused to play is a problem.
So much so, the commissioner acknowledged it at his state of the union.
he made it a point of discussion.
He brought it up for a reason.
This is not the same thing.
Nobody thinks this moment will drive Dodger fans away forever.
He didn't skip anything.
He pitched brilliantly.
But he got hurt at the end of last year.
He's in his 15th or 16th year.
He didn't have his best stuff in his opinion, believe it or not.
That's how great Kershaw is.
He didn't have the bite to his hook.
He's like, I didn't really have it.
Well, you could have fooled America.
They're not the same thing.
One is a guy that gave you everything he had, but is concerned about his arm because he's had injuries.
He's older, a short and spring training, and he was hurt last year.
Almost had surgery.
The other is guys just taking the night off because.
Because this isn't difficult.
This is an easy one.
All right.
If you're like me, you're not leaving your house much this month.
The Masters, March Madness, now the NBA playoffs start.
The draft is around the corner.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd.

Do you remember when Diana Ross
double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast.
Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun,
thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the
biology of ton-tons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business
sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the IHeart Radio app,
Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. It's great to have you in. One of my favorite guests,
Stephen Jackson, 14 years in the NBA, a champion, tough guy. It's going to a fight right after
this podcast or this little interview here. So I don't want to take too much of his time. So I was
just telling Joy, some of these first-round matchups are fantastic.
Even I love the young T-wolves and the young grizzlies.
So the two young teams, they get to face each other.
So I want to ask you about Ben Simmons, because I don't know.
So did you have an experience in your career where there was a really talented guy,
but he didn't play much?
And he didn't play that year.
And then you inserted him into the playoffs because I don't know what to expect from him.
Is he in shape?
Does he get the spaces?
like what should I expect from Ben Simmons if he plays 10 minutes a half?
That's hard to say, Colin, because the only way you can get in basketball shape,
especially playoff shape, is by playing in the regular season and playing a lot of minutes.
You know, you can't just show up in the playoffs and expect to be in game shape.
I don't care what you do off the court.
It's not going to get you in game shape.
So I've never been in that situation, but it's hard to know what to expect from a guy like that.
But at the same time, we're not talking about a normal.
a guy, Colin. We're talking about Ben Simmons. We're talking about one of the best
defenders in the league. We're talking about first team all defense. We're talking about one of
the best playmakers in the league at 6-9. So if I got to throw a guy like that on the court
and just see what's going to happen with a guy like Kyrie Irvin and Kevin Durant, I'm willing
to take my chances. Yeah, you know, I said this. I think they're going to beat Boston.
I really do, because I think what they're thinking is if we can bring Simmons in and just
guard Jason Tatum, that's your assignment, eight minutes a half. And then I get
Durant and Kyrie Irving, Stephen.
I like Brooklyn to upset Boston.
Your thoughts?
Oh, I'm going, I'll have Brooklyn to win the championship from the beginning of this season.
And not even knowing that everything they was going to go through through the ups and downs,
but I believe in this team and I believe in Kyrie and KD.
And I'm just interested in see what Steve Nash is going to do.
It's going to be hard to stop Tatum.
Tatum is a great score and Brown.
It's going to be hard to stop those guys.
And this team is not a great defensive.
team. They're going to have to find the way to come together on defense and be better on
defense to beat these guys because these guys have been scoring through the ceiling of the last
couple of games. Okay. Now, Hardin did not play well end of the regular season. He did play
well initially. And I think, Stephen, one of the things when I've watched M. Bden Harden and
Maxie, they're still Tobias Harris. They're kind of trying to figure it all out. I don't think
you should go into the playoffs trying to figure stuff out. So I, even though I liked
the move to get Hardin?
What do you expect from them in the playoffs?
I don't know what to expect because Hardin has let us down in the past years in the
playoffs.
All the big moments he hasn't stepped up.
We know what Joel can do.
We know what he's going to be in the playoffs.
He's going to be the same dominant big man that he's been all season.
And my MVP.
But I just think James has to find himself.
He's been making excuses for the last three, four years, and it's always been an excuse.
Well, now it's not an excuse.
You have a great coach.
You have a great young team.
You have the MVP in my mind in B.
So there's no excuse for you not to show up.
Will he show up?
We'll see.
Stephen, you were a good playoff player.
Can I make the argument that some guys are not built for it?
They shrink.
They're not playoff guys.
Do you ever have a teammate like that?
I know a lot of guys like that, Colin.
It's the same.
A lot, the best shooters in the NBA, some of them can make shots in a regular season,
but when they count in the playoffs, they know where to be found.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's Steph Curry.
He can shoot all the time.
Yeah.
When you sleep at church, at the bakery, at the grocery store, he on five.
Okay.
Let's go to the West.
So I'm on an island here.
I love the Clippers.
I like their roster.
I love their coach.
I like their versatility.
I wish they had a second star, so I don't think they'll beat the sons.
but I'm going to pose this to you.
You know this.
Not all owners are about winning in any sports league.
Some of these guys, it's just net worth and that stuff.
It's a business.
Steve Ballmer of the Clippers lives for basketball, very impatient, richest owner.
If they get wiped out by the sons, four and five games, Kauai's been, you know, hasn't worked.
Paul George, I like him a lot, but he's been hurt.
would you if you were Balmer just say, man, I gave this thing two years.
These guys can't stay.
I didn't pay all this money for an eight seed.
What if they get blown out by the Sons?
What would you do?
I wouldn't break it up because I still haven't had a legit shot.
You know, I still haven't had both of my stars for a full season.
And then you're playing against spending signs.
You're not playing against eight seed or seven seed.
You're playing against the best team in the league.
So if they go out there and compete and do that,
a great job. Obviously, you want to win the series and you go in the series to win, but if you
come up short, you can't really say blow it up because you still haven't seen the dynamic
of Kauai and Paul George together for a whole season. So I think that's still worth the ticket of
admission. Okay, I want to ask you about Patrick Beverly. And he bounces around the league.
He's annoying as you know what. There is a line in the NBA between dirty and just annoying. And I
think Rodman was mostly just annoying. I don't think he was a dirty player. Bill Ambere,
I thought, was a dirty player at times. Where do you, what do you make of Pat Bev? Are you a fan?
What do you make of him? I mean, Pat, Pat, Beth, he got heart. I mean, that's really all I can say.
I like Pat Bell. I love his heart because you have some guys with all the talent in the world,
but they ain't got no heart. And I'll take a guy sometimes with heart over talent. But Pat,
he did a good job to sell it. Pat, Pat don't.
really lock nobody up. He don't really stop nobody. He's selling it. I mean, all this
celebrating after winning a playing game shows that these guys are not used to winning. That's
all it says. I wouldn't have done it. I mean, I remember when we beat Dallas, the number one
seat in the first round of playoffs. We celebrate with our fans, but we didn't jump on the table
and do all that. We knew we were just going to the second round. So it was way too much for me.
And, you know, I really don't know the history with the Clippers, but it wasn't worth.
all that. Okay. So give me your finals. What do you think we're going to see?
I would say Phoenix, Brooklyn. Oh, you really like Brooklyn. Yeah, I do.
How would you have defended Kevin Durant? I tried multiple years. Couldn't do it.
Yeah, he's a handful. So don't make me lie, I can't tell you. I mean, the best thing for me,
the times I did have a little success
when you make it difficult. You can't block
a shot, you can't stop him, you can't take
the ball from him, just try to be physical
and make it difficult. And that's with
any star in the NBA. Nobody's
really stopping guys. If you
have anybody say Patrick Beverly is
stopping the guy, no, he's not. What he's doing
he's making it difficult for the guy
and he's having an off night.
All right, go to Dallas, enjoy the fight, have a
great time. You know we love you. Fox Sports
NBA analyst, Stephen
Jackson. See you, buddy.
My guy.
All right.
All right.
Love him.
Great.
He's honest about that.
There used to be Ruben Patterson.
They called a Kobe Stopper.
And Kobe was like, well, he's not doing a great job of it because I know my number.
Do you have the Kobe book?
No.
Oh, it's fascinating.
It's like he breaks down each player that he played against in the NBA and talks about
like what he would do against them.
And that's like a little story or anecdote anecdote about these players.
It's so good.
But yeah, I mean, he's right.
You're not really stopping them.
They're too good.
There was a player Tony Allen.
Yes.
I thought was a very good defensive player.
Tony Allen was exceptional.
But even the great defensive players, and similar in some ways in the NFL now,
you're not really going to stop them.
Can you be disruptive?
Can you be disruptive?
Can you make things difficult and disruptive?
Take something away from them, force them to do what they weren't planning on doing.
In both instances, football and basketball,
make the offense work faster than they're comfortable with.
The Bosa brothers make you throw it a little quick.
quicker than you want to. Pat Bev makes you shoot a little, just Aaron Donald. Yeah, just Aaron Donald's
going to make you uncomfortable. And before everyone starts freaking out, we're not saying that
Pat Beverly is as good as Aaron Donald. Yeah, no, no, that we're not. And the Kershaw thing is not
NBA players taking the night off. They're not the same thing. It's going to be all right.
It is. So, um, um, the draft, I talked to Bill Polion last night. Uh, one of my favorite draft
guys is around the corner. Uh, it is interesting.
When Baker Mayfield talked yesterday, it was interesting.
My take was, and today is Baker Mayfield's birthday.
So there's no reason for me to pounce on him.
I've said this before, and I said it to start the show.
I don't think his personality is perfect to be a franchise quarterback.
I think he wakes up and has to fight his instincts every day.
Russell Wilson, Brady, Manning, Elway,
I think their natural personality is that of a quarterback.
And I do believe this.
We all have, I've gone to enough therapy.
We all have, there's the artist, there's the impulsive, there's people that are more rational.
We all have different personalities.
The people that become superstars in life, their personality fits their job perfectly.
Yeah, generally rock stars have some rock star tendencies.
Yeah, yeah.
They're not overly concerned with being responsible to hotel rooms and tour buses.
Right. So that's what makes them rock stars. That's what I've always said. I've always been able to separate art from artists.
I don't expect my artist. I don't want them to be criminal. But I understand that to get to where they got to get, there's a lot of paint to spill. I mean, artists are different. And we need artists. All your educated societies have great art.
That's why we, you know, national endowments of the art. We need our artists. They're good for our kids. They're good for our brains. They're good for our enjoyment. They're good for a lot of things. They're good for a lot of things.
They're good for a lot of people's employment.
But there are brain types.
And I think with quarterbacks, the brain type is you can't be impulsive.
Carson Wentz, impulsive.
Baker's impulsive.
Cam was often impulsive.
Now, they're all talented enough to still be able to do it.
But it's not an ideal fit.
