Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. For 1979, that was a big moment for me.
Starting point is 00:01:08 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year.
Starting point is 00:01:25 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show.
Starting point is 00:01:51 This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast.

Joy Taylor in for Colin Cowherd all week next week.
Starting point is 00:02:38 And today as he is enjoying his Caribbean vacation, I know he was having some travel issues earlier in the week, so hopefully everything is going smoothly for him and his family as he was off on vacation, much deserved. We have a really fun show today. A lot going on today as the NBA draft was last night. I'm joined by Ryan Music. Alex Curry is also on vacation still.
Starting point is 00:03:01 across the ponds. She is still in Italy, so thanks for hanging with me today, Ryan. It's great to be the last two standing here on the stage. I know. It feels very empty out here. I'm not going to lie. I very much feel on an island. Because Alex is usually much closer, and you're on the other side. It's like social distancing. That's right. We're still doing that here in California. Amongst other things is, you know, the rest of the country reels this morning. But we won't get into that. We have a very loaded show today. Joel Klat will join us at the bottom of the hour. big news in college football this week with Arch Manning committing to Texas. We'll ask him about that.
Starting point is 00:03:35 And of course, he is also a USFL analyst as the playoffs start this weekend. So we'll talk to Joel Klapp, Mary Kay Cabot, Brown's beatwriter, Cleveland.com. You know, I love talking to Mary Kay. And there is a lot going on in Cleveland's with Baker and the Deshawn Watson situation, which continues to develop feels like every day. John Hollinger, senior NBA columnist for the athletic. We'll discuss the NBA draft with him. Get his thoughts on some of those picks. And Chandler Jones will be in studio with us, Raiders defensive end. He is playing in one of the most interesting and tough divisions. I think probably the toughest division in football this year. I think that division is going to come down to health, really.
Starting point is 00:04:14 So we'll talk to him here in studio, which is always very exciting. So a loaded show today. Thank you so much for hanging out with us and joining us on this beautiful Friday. The NBA draft was last night. And in general, there wasn't a whole lot of drama. leading into the drafts. It didn't seem like there was going to be any kind of drastic moves. It was kind of consensus that just Jabari Smith was going to be the first pick. And then here comes Paolo, which I loved. I loved, I loves Palo's suit.
Starting point is 00:04:44 And I love that he was the number one overall pick. It just was a little strange considering that Orlando had the number one overall pick. And it seems like all the reports were set. And they throw us a curveball. They didn't even meet with Powell. They didn't even work him out. They didn't even talk to him until Monday. So it was a bit of a surprise.
Starting point is 00:05:06 I don't know if I can go as far as drama because he is a big body, very talented from Blue Blood, led Duke in scoring. So it's not like it is an outrageous off-the-board pick, but it did come a bit out of left field, especially considering Orlando has the number one pick. You don't need to smoke screen anybody. Nobody's jumping you in the dress. so you really don't have to keep it a secret. And generally the number one overall pick in the drafts,
Starting point is 00:05:32 particularly with the NBA, is pretty known. It's pretty understood who is going to go number one. And this draft was a bit unique in that way, in that we didn't really have someone that everyone felt very strongly about. It just seemed that the reports were consistent. But I really like this pick for Orlando.
Starting point is 00:05:48 They have a lot of young, nice pieces. As I mentioned, he is a huge body, 610, 250 pounds, plays with a lot of power. I think he's going to fit into what they're doing and building in Orlando perfectly. I'm excited for this move. And I'm excited for the way that the rest of the draft went as well. So the most debated or discussed player in this draft was Chet Holmgram.
Starting point is 00:06:11 And that is because of his very unique body type. And we've been seeing, well, I've been seeing because I'm a nerd who watches grassroots basketball on YouTube. But for those of you that also do that, we've been seeing highlights of Chet for a long time. And obviously he played at another blue bud in Gonzaga. His unique body type and skill kind of drew some questions. And this is why he wasn't the number one overall pick. It sort of felt like he needs a little bit more development in his body.
Starting point is 00:06:41 So where he goes is really going to matter. I love that he went to OKC. Colin and I talked about this a lot yesterday. But he's not only going to a place that has a great draft record, but it's also a place he can sort of hide. If he doesn't perform well in his first year, if he struggles or stumbles a little bit, that's fine in OKC. He's not under pressure to go in there and transform the franchise overnight,
Starting point is 00:07:07 even if he is the number two pick in the draft. He's able, they're patience, they're not demanding. And with his particular body type, we all assuming that he needs to put on more weight to compete at the NBA level, this is a perfect place for him. I love that he ended up going there. We discussed it a lot this week. I thought it was the perfect place for him to end up.
Starting point is 00:07:28 So I love that he did end up going there. And when you look at really what OKC is doing, this is just a perfect swing for OKC to take. Now, I don't think it's an outrageous pick. Anyone that took Chet Holmgram, I just think it's better for him as a player, as a young player, who obviously, you know, needs to put on a little weight on the NBA level
Starting point is 00:07:48 to go somewhere where he's not, that's not going to be demanded of him right away. But not only is OKC have 16 first round. picks over the next five drafts. They have a long history of drafting really great players. So that's not even in question. I love their draft last night. We're showing it here. Jalen Williams of Santa Clara, Jalen Williams of Arkansas, Usman Dang of France, and obviously Chet Holmgren. And as I mentioned, they have 16 first round picks of the next five drafts. So they're going to be developing for a while and that's the perfect place, the perfect place
Starting point is 00:08:18 for Chet to end up. Now the last takeaway I have from the draft last night is that Of course, there's always a lot of panic, particularly when it comes to college sports. Anytime there's a change, everyone freaks out. Everyone freaked out about the one in Dunn rule. Everyone's currently freaking out about NIL. And I think what you noticed, well, I noticed in the draft last night. There were a lot of blue bloods drafted last night. A lot of college traditional powerhouses.
Starting point is 00:08:45 You got Duke. You got Arizona. You got Kentucky. You got Baylor. You got Kansas. You got UCLA. There were two G-League players drafted in the first rounds. Few international players. 26 of the 30 first round players were college basketball players.
Starting point is 00:09:01 There was so much discussion about all these players going overseas, all these top players going overseas, all these top players going to G League. The college basketball scene is going to be ruined. The sport is going to die. There's always this overreaction to everything. Everything's going to be fine. And when I looked at the balance of what happened last night, my other takeaway was NIL is going to help college basketball. The big argument for G League and for going, to play internationally was money. Because everyone's money situation is not the same. Yes, it's nice to go to college
Starting point is 00:09:30 and get a bit of an education and get that experience and then go on to the MBA. But not everyone can just avoid not making money for a year. So having the option of the G League and going international is important. You should have that option. And now with NIL, you can go to one of these massive schools
Starting point is 00:09:48 and make the money or more money that you would make in G League or playing internationally and stay here in the States. So I think it's great. I think overall, the college basketball season this year was a massive success. The ratings were up for college basketball this year. 13%. The blue blood still rained.
Starting point is 00:10:08 The NBA playoff ratings were up. And I thought this was a really nice night for the NBA. That being said, that being said, I think I said it was my final takeaway. But this is actually my final takeaway. I think the NBA draft should move around a little bit. I love what the NFL draft has done going to different cities and making it a fan experience. It's been in New York forever.
Starting point is 00:10:27 I understand New York. It's the mecca of basketball. But I think it'd be cool to see the NBA draft move around. I think it'd be cool to be in Seattle, a huge basketball city that obviously doesn't have a men's basketball team. It'd be awesome to see it there. Some are like Chicago, Memphis. I'll give you my list later on in the show
Starting point is 00:10:47 of where I think they should move it around to. But I think that they should look into that. I don't know if I'm the first person to suggest this. I doubt I am. But I think it would be cool for them to adopt what the NFL is done with the NBA draft and move it around to different cities and make it a thing. Transitioning to Kyrie Irving. This has been a story for quite some time.
Starting point is 00:11:08 And it's getting messier by the second in Brooklyn. I think at this point, Kyrie Irving's MBA story has been written. I consider him an all-time great finish. sure at the rim. Obviously, he's an unbelievable score. He has handles that we rave about. But he's also blown up every place he's been since he was with LeBron James. And I was very supportive of him, actually, when he was in Boston, because I never bought into the whole idea of Brad Stevens' unbelievable system. It's just a system. He can't fit into the system. All right, well, we've seen that Brad Stevens system didn't just work for Kyrie.
Starting point is 00:11:46 Emé Udoka took them to the NBA finals. It was obviously not just Kyrie. he wasn't resonating with. And that's not a knock on Brad Stevens basketball mind. Obviously, they moved him from the front office and he's doing a great job. But it's now become very obvious that this is what Kyrie does. I just don't think you can win a championship with Kyrie as your one or two. He's not a number one. He showed that in Cleveland and in Boston. And he's not a reliable too. He's showing that in Brooklyn. He turned his back on the brawn and now it looks like he's turning his back on KD. Now, I don't really know what is going on in Brooklyn. Whatever a you choose to follow because there's so many of them,
Starting point is 00:12:24 whatever direction, good luck. I can't make anything of it. One minute it's Kyrie and Katie are fighting. The next minute, Katie is going to leave. If Kyrie doesn't stay, Kyrie wants to stay. Now he has options that he would like to go to. Who knows what's going on behind the scenes in Brooklyn?
Starting point is 00:12:39 And the fact that it's chaos is not surprising to me at all. Now, Adrian Rochonowski did tweet about some of the locations that Kyrie would be open to if he did end up leaving Brooklyn, he said, if Kyrie can't reach an agreement to stay in Brooklyn, he has a list of teams he'd like them to consider on sign and trades, including the Lakers, Clippers, Knicks, Heat, Mavs, and Sixers. None of those teams have cap space to sign him without the Nets help.
Starting point is 00:13:08 So this would be an elaborate trade if it does end up happening. It seems as if there's quite a bit of a drip towards that inevitable fate. when you look at the way the season ended in Brooklyn, they're the only team that got swept in the playoffs. They went into the season as one of the favorites to win the championship. That's quite a swing. The only swing worse was the Lakers who missed the playoffs entirely. So he straight up didn't play in all but 29 games
Starting point is 00:13:37 in the regular season and four postseason games. I just don't think that Kyrie can be your one or two on a championship team. That's not to say that he won't win another championship. That's not to say that he won't still contribute. We know what he can do when he's on the floor. Now, granted, take in mind, they only played in 29 games this season, so he was quite fresh when he was putting on those performances,
Starting point is 00:13:57 which will likely not be the case wherever he goes next. But then, of course, you have to consider that maybe it will, because Kyrie is perfectly fine, not only leaving millions of dollars on the table, but being completely unreliable. I don't have a problem with Kyrie as an individual. He is obviously a guy that does his own thing. He has done amazing things for the community.
Starting point is 00:14:17 When we're talking about basketball and building a championship team, the evidence most recently and over the past few years is that you cannot put him in a position where you can rely on him to be available, to be consistent, and to contribute to a winning championship level team. So I don't know what's going to happen in Brooklyn. I don't know how any of these teams getting involved can feel comfortable about making a massive move for Kyrie. He's talked about retiring. obviously he chose to not play for most of the season last year. There's a lot up in the air.
Starting point is 00:14:52 I just think any of these teams that makes a move for them, or Brooklyn, if they decide to work this out, really have to consider who else they're putting around Kyrie if they're truly going to make a run out of championship. Speaking of one of these teams that Kyrie mentioned, the Lakers will discuss what they're talking about doing next. And we'll talk to Joel Klatt at the bottom of the hour, USFL playoffs.
Starting point is 00:15:16 And Arch Manning, what that means for the college football landscape. That's coming up next. Joy Taylor in for Colin Cowherd on the herd. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. Starting point is 00:17:03 Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to? I do a little kill. Well, you can find out on The Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English.
Starting point is 00:17:20 Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84's big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS. on the table right now.
Starting point is 00:17:46 Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Starting point is 00:18:18 Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses.
Starting point is 00:18:37 Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.

The Dollar Shave Club Six Blade Razor brings notice. smoothly smooth shaves with six sanicil blades for swift hair removal and a lubricating strip
Starting point is 00:19:18 that keeps things smooth. Dollar Shave Club razors are sold at Dollar Shaveclub.com or in stores. Joel Clat will join us in just a few minutes. Talk about that Arch Manning to Texas move, some other college football stuff, and of course USFL playoffs start this weekend. But the Lakers have been mentioned with Kyrie Irving as a possible destination for Kyrie. There's been lots of trades thrown out there, Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook for Kyrie and Ben Simmons, and there's all kinds of things floating around
Starting point is 00:19:51 madness, multi-universe of madness. Is that what it's called? I think it's what it's called, right? Did I nail that? Yeah, I'm nerding out right now. Anyway, if the Lakers are going to convince anyone that they are finally moving in a new direction, I really don't know how Kyrie fits into that narrative. If they are
Starting point is 00:20:07 concerned about the future, if they are redirecting from the chaos that was Russell West Westbrook last year. I don't know how Kyrie fixes any of that. Is Kyrie a better player than Russell Westbrook? Of course. Of course. We know that. Of course. That's not up for conversation.
Starting point is 00:20:24 Is Kyrie going to be available? Who knows? I don't even know if Kyrie knows that. Now he's talked about being a different person than what he was when he was playing with LeBron before. Obviously we know what LeBron and Kyrie are capable of championship.
Starting point is 00:20:39 We saw it. But that was six years ago. LeBron is a different player now. Kyrie is a different person now. There's a lot that I have questions about, about how it's just going to fit a plug and play situation. Now, hypothetically, if it was Anthony Davis, LeBron, and Kyrie, potentially that works. I could buy into that a little bit, but it's still the consistency factor for me. Anthony Davis plays in about 40 games a year. He's constantly injured. LeBron is now a year older. Now coming off of an unbelievable season, and he is not somebody who I am, you know, in the business of doubting,
Starting point is 00:21:19 but he can't play all the time. He can't carry a team all the time. So adding Kyrie to this, while his on-the-court contributions would be tremendous, you can't just talk about Kyrie in one dimension. You can't just talk about him as a player and how he plugs into a roster. There's a lot more that comes with Kyrie. What are you giving up to make this move? So in general, while it might makes sense when you're envisioning how, excuse me, how they will look on the court. But you have to look at the whole scope of things, especially when you're talking about the Los Angeles Lakers. If Kyrie was going to a stable organization with an established culture and a coach that was without question and stars that we know what they can do and contribute and there's a system
Starting point is 00:22:04 and role players, maybe that's a situation I could see Kyrie thriving in. But the Lakers are starting over with a new head coach who wants to establish a certain type of culture there. LeBron James is now a year older. Anthony Davis still completely unreliable. I just don't know how Kyrie fits into the narrative of we're going in a different direction. It feels like a band-aid that isn't really super sticky. So if it gets a little windy, it might just fly off. And now the wound is open again. So on the court, when I envision it, it works. But that is assuming that All of them are healthy, and we already saw how that went this year with the Lakers. Let's get to Ryan with the news before we talk to Joel Klapp.
Starting point is 00:22:48 Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Good morning, Joy. Good morning. On the other side of that equation of Kyrie Irving would be the future of Kevin Durant and what he may be doing in Brooklyn. He's reportedly not fully committed to the Nets. He is closely monitoring this situation, considering all of his future options.
Starting point is 00:23:09 descriptions. Kyrie has, as you said, already given his list of teams that he could be interested in. Durant has not told the Nets that he will request to trade if Kyrie leaves, but it still leaves his future in Brooklyn very much in the air. He does have four years left on his contract, and Kyrie has until June 29th to decide whether or not he will opt into his deal. You talked about Kyrie being someone who you're never really quite sure how committed he is these days. And this is the problem that the Nets find themselves. and they sort of sold out their culture that they had building prior to getting KD and Kyrie, which I understand.
Starting point is 00:23:46 The NBA is run by stars. You're going to need those star players in order to actually win a championship. The problem is you went for what ended up being three stars in Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and James Hardin. Three guys who have kind of shown, they're always willing to sort of use their leverage and be like, hey, I'm out if things aren't going exactly how they want. Yeah, they signed up for a very unstable. stable situation. That's why I'm kind of disappointed that we didn't get to see the full season
Starting point is 00:24:15 with James Harden, Kyrie, and KD, because I never saw this as a long-term situation. It always felt like lightning in a bottle. What did they play 16 games together? So we didn't get that, whatever magic that was supposed to be. And, you know, I think KD is the centerpiece to all of this. I mean, KD is still on any given night the best player in the league. Absolutely. So I don't, the thing about KD is this, though. When I think of KD, I don't think of a team. I think of just KD. He's sort of his own, he's just the player, KD, similar to James Hardin at this point.
Starting point is 00:24:51 Like, once you become so transactional and you've moved around so much, you and you're a star at that level, I don't associate you with a certain team, even with Golden State where he won his championships. Like, I can't see the jersey on KD. So him wanting to get out of Brooklyn, if this all falls, apart would surprise me 0%. Right. What about LeBron James? Do you think of Cavaliers?
Starting point is 00:25:15 Or for you, the heat? It's amazing Miami Heat. Yeah. Okay. I think that we will, I do wonder how we will remember LeBron James because everyone always argues with me like that the one championship is better than two championships, which I'm not great at math, but two is better than one when it comes to championships. I don't know, Joy.
Starting point is 00:25:31 I don't know. That could be. You don't get to be started. I don't know. What do you, what do you, like you close your eyes, you think of LeBron James. What jersey is he wearing? Probably Cavaliers. I mean, I am like a Lakers fan, so obviously that changes it a little. But I don't think he'll ever be remembered as a Laker because of the history of all of the other Laker greats.
Starting point is 00:25:49 You can't just win one and then mostly miss the playoffs outside of that. If he wins another one with L.A. It could be interesting at that point. But I think for the most part, because of he spent most of his career in Cleveland, that's probably what he's going to be remembered as. And bringing back the championship and everything that came up. He does lean into the Ohio stuff quite a bit. I don't know. For me, it's the heat.
Starting point is 00:26:14 It's where he won his first championship. It's where he won his most championships. That's right, for now. Yeah, that's what we're clinging on to. Let's turn our attention to the NFL here. Former NFL executive, Mike Tannenbaum was talking about another team of yours, the Miami Dolphins and their quarterback Tua Tua Tua.
Starting point is 00:26:31 All eyes are on him as he enters his third season, and they made some big moves in the off season. Here's what Tannenbaum had to say about Tua, a quote of all the quarterbacks in the NFL. Tua has more pressure on him than anyone, and Teddy Bridgewater is a very capable quarterback. It's not unreasonable to think. He could be playing sometime by midseason sooner than later if Tua hits any bump in the road, given everything he has to work with. A lot of Tua hype, but Mike Tannenbaum kind of going the other way, saying, whoa, whoa, whoa, let's see how this plays out. I'm separated from the dolphins at the
Starting point is 00:27:06 moment. They're still sending me flowers, trying to get me back. Are you even opening that door yet? Are you just giving it time? Well, I don't turn down flowers. So, you know, I bring the flowers in. You're not leaving them at the doorstep? Just drying and then throw the note away. We're not going to sit around and like think about it. But I love the moves that they've made. I hated the Brian Flores situation. I still think that's a mess. I don't know what Mike McDaniel is going to be able to do there. But as far as the personnel moves, they've been very aggressive. And obviously Tyreek Hill being the star of this list, the thing that gives me anxiety about what's going on with the dolphins is that part, is the height part. They've not earned anything on the field yet. And that's always what makes me nervous.
Starting point is 00:27:52 When people start talking about on paper, on paper, on paper, I'm like, I don't care about on paper. You don't win championships on paper. You win them on the field. You win them on the court. Those expectations can be dangerous. Yes. And for certain organizations, expectations are fine. They're used to expectations.
Starting point is 00:28:03 They thrive on expectations. They live up to expectations. The Patriots every single year when Tom was there were favored to win the championship. And yet somehow they convinced us they were like the underdog. Not me, but like they would do that whole thing. Like, everybody doubts us. Like, you're favored to win the championship again for like the 10th year in a row. Like nobody doubts you.
Starting point is 00:28:21 No one doubts you. No one is doubting you. But they were able to spin that narrative and kind of absorb all of the hype of that. But organizations that haven't done that, haven't been back to that championship level, obviously dolphins have championships, but not in most people's lifetime they're listening to this show. So that's the part that makes me nervous is the hype, because those expectations could be very unrealistic, and then the results are a disaster. Well, we will know to his future and whether or not it's with the dolphins by about halfway through the season.
Starting point is 00:28:55 We'll finish up with this. One of the big stories of the off season was Debo Samuel, his holdout, wanting a new contract. Was he going to get traded or not? He did not. He remains with the 49ers right now. And they made it clear that they don't plan on parting ways with him and they want to come to an agreement on a new deal. George Kittle is hopeful that a contract will come together soon. He said something crazy could happen. I could be eating my words in two weeks. But the Niners have done every major contract. Mine, Fred Warner's, this week before the season started. So my guess is in three weeks. We'll hear news of it, but I have no idea.
Starting point is 00:29:29 pretty confident that they will make something happen, which I wouldn't be surprised by. Last season, Debo had 77 catches for over 1,400 yards, 59 rushing attempts for over 365 yards and 14 total touchdowns. This is one of those situations where I think both sides either have or need to come together to understand we're the best for each other. He's the best fit in San Francisco. It's probably where he's going to have his most success. And San Francisco needs him to be a big playmaker in their own.
Starting point is 00:30:01 offense for Trey Lance to develop and become the quarterback that they traded up for. Yeah, I don't always root for outcomes when it comes to contract negotiations and these type of situations. But I want to see Debo in San Francisco. I agree with you. I think the system matters for Debo. They just need to come to an agreement, not just on the money, but how he's used. He obviously isn't happy with the usage that Kyle Shanahan has applied for him in this system. He wants it to be less collision. And the issue with that is if he goes somewhere else, they're going to want to use him in the way that Kyle Shanahan used him.
Starting point is 00:30:36 So it kind of defeats the purpose. And they're going to be probably less flexible on it because they're like, hey, we gave up all this to get you so that we can get the debo that we saw in San Francisco. So I really hope they're able to work something out. He feels right there. Again, I don't generally root for things like this. But he just is a fit for what San Francisco does. what Kyle Shanahan can do with him and also you have Trey Lance so you really want a powerful,
Starting point is 00:31:04 consistent weapon for a young developing quarterback. So for all those reasons, I really hope that they're able to work this out. It's been a little quiet lately. Like it was really feisty there for a minute. Things kind of settle down. I don't know if that's a good sign or not. It feels like usually once it gets quiet, all of a sudden you're like, hey, we made the deal happen because people are happy and when you're happy, you're not leaking information.
Starting point is 00:31:26 Right. You're not positioning yourself. There's no Game of Thrones stuff going on. So I like it. I hope that they are able to work something out with him there. I just think that they're a more dynamic offense with him there. And if he goes somewhere else, they're going to want him to be how he was there. So it kind of defeats the purpose of leaving.
Starting point is 00:31:42 That's Ryan with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd Lie News. Ryan Music in with me. Alex Curry is on vacation. Colin Cowher is on vacation. So Ryan and I are holding down the full.
Starting point is 00:31:56 here in Los Angeles, which is we are now in the middle of summer, although it was really foggy this morning. Did you get fog? Fog and rained like three days ago. No, it's crazy. It's like the apocalypse. Listen, we haven't had rain in a long time, let alone rain in June was not expected. Yeah, for those of you who don't know that song is true, it never rains in Southern California. So when it does rain here, it's terrifying for everyone. Everyone just freaks out. We'll talk to Joel Clat in a few minutes. We're waiting for him to link up. We were just talking about Tua and the Tua hype is making me a little bit nervous. We have Joel Kla. Okay, we'll go to Joel. We'll talk about two in a minute. Let's go to Joel Klaat.
Starting point is 00:32:36 Fox Sports College Football Analyst, USFL analyst. Hey, Joel, how are you doing? I'm good. How are you, Joy? I'm doing great. It's good to see you. It's been a while. It's nicer to come on and see you than Colin. I can tell you that. Colin's on vacation. Colin is in the Bahamas. and I, you know, Colin's not a big hat guy. He's not a backwards hat guy and he's not a big hat guy in general. And I told him that that sun down there in the Bahamas is not going to be kind. So you're going to have to lean into the hat. There's nothing I want more than to see Colin Coward with a backwards hat on.
Starting point is 00:33:10 And then we can just all, you know, never live it down. He better not have too many margaritas and let that happen. He better not. But you've been covering the USFL all season for the inaugural season. You are calling the USFL semifinals, Philadelphia stars in New Jersey. the General's Saturday, 3 Eastern on Fox. And the league has been great. The viewership has been great.
Starting point is 00:33:33 The product's been great. It's been really fun. What are you expecting for this weekend's USFL semifinals? Well, you know, it's interesting. I think with any league, you're going to have teams that, you know, the cream rises to the top. And there are teams that struggled. And I found during the course of the season that when you got some of the top tier teams
Starting point is 00:33:50 facing one another, the quality of football was really high. And so that's what I'm looking forward to this weekend is because now we've got the playoffs in these top four teams that have made it to this point. We're in Canton, and in particular in our matchup with New Jersey against Philadelphia, these two teams I thought were probably playing the best football at the end of the regular season. They actually just met each other last week. So it's the rare back-to-back matchup. Generals were able to win that one. They've won nine in a row. But overall, Joy, it's just a quality of ball.
Starting point is 00:34:20 When you get the better teams against each other, and we certainly have that with the stars in general. the quality of quarterback play, I thought, is and will be very good with both the generals guys, Luis Perez and DeAndre Johnson, as well as Case Cookess from Philadelphia. So, you know, that's what I'm expecting. I think that we're going to see a great game tomorrow in this semifinal. Yeah, Kirkus is having himself quite a season. Are the New Jersey generals the best to win at all, the best bet? I think so. I think so.
Starting point is 00:34:50 I know Birmingham was the one that started out. You know, it's got the undefeated team. and was kind of the odds on a favorite. But when you look at New Jersey, their only last was to Birmingham. It was in the first week of the season. They've won nine in a row. And when you dive in and study them on tape, what you see is they're really fundamentally sound.
Starting point is 00:35:08 You know, Mike Riley, their head coach has done an outstanding job. They've got playmakers on the outside with the league MVP, Kavonte Turpin. They've got Darius Victor. They've got Trey Williams running the ball in the backfield. They've got this two-headed quarterback monster, each playing different roles. DeAndre Johnson, that's a run. thrower type. Luis Perez maybe a little bit more of a statue in the pocket type of prototypical pocket passer, but it works. And then defensively, they're very basic, but they're very tough.
Starting point is 00:35:35 They are right now my favorite to win the championship because of how good that they have been, not just through the nine-week winning streak, but more in particular late in the season in the last three or four weeks. Joel Clat with us here on the herd, Joy Taylor, in for Colin Cowherd. He is calling the USFL semifinals. Philadelphia stars New Jersey Generals Saturday at three Eastern on Fox. So this week we got some pretty exciting news. A guy who's been quiet about his whole commitment process.
Starting point is 00:36:04 The family's been very protective of Arch Manning. Rightfully so because, you know, Manning is your last name. You're going to have to handle things a little differently. But he committed to Texas. And that is a big announcement for college football. What does that mean specifically for Texas football? Well, it's fascinating because they've stacked up these high commitments, you
Starting point is 00:36:24 year after year after year. And I just keep thinking to myself, like, we've got a quarterback battle at Texas going into this fall between a former number two quarterback in this class, Hudson Card, and a number one overall quarterback in Quinn Ewers. Let's just say, sake of argument, Joy, that Quinn Ewers wins the job. Well, he still has three years to play. So then Archmanning gets there next spring,
Starting point is 00:36:47 and is you going to battle it out with Quinn Ewers? You know, these are only the, both of these guys are in the rarefied air, of having these perfect recruiting scores, along with a guy like Vince Young. These are the only quarterbacks. And they're all converging in this one place at Texas. I just find it fascinating. And to be honest with you, you start to look in the crystal ball. Joy, maybe one of these guys is going to finish his career at Texas in the new landscape of college football.
Starting point is 00:37:16 And I think Steve Sarkeesian understands that you can and might have to back up every single class with a great player and a great player. great prospect. Gone are the days where you can say, listen, we're going to take a great quarterback prospect in one class, and then we're going to wait a class or two before we go after another one. You've got to back them up because these guys can leave right away. Now, the one thing that I also find fascinating about this is that Quinn Ewers has already taken up his transfer. So he's stuck at Texas. He's got to win the job or else he's got to have to sit out of here if he leaves. So he's a little bit behind the eight ball when you're taking a look at all these battles, all these guys that are about to be on campus in Austin and battling for that
Starting point is 00:37:58 QB1 spot. Yeah, but I mean, if you're Sark, you can't not recruit Arch Manning, right? That's right. That's exactly. Well, you bring up a great point. And by the way, I didn't even get into that aspect. There's so many different aspects of this. Joy, how about the feather in the cap for Steve Sarkis to get Arch Manning? I mean, this was, I can't remember, maybe you can. I can't, can you remember a recruit that was as highly coveted as Arch Manning? I can't. In, no.
Starting point is 00:38:30 Maybe in, I mean, for basketball, it's different, obviously. Like grassroots basketball, these kids have these massive followings in YouTube and, you know, you've got Sierra Canyon out here. They make more of a difference right away in basketball, right? I mean, you can be a national title contender like that if you get the right number one recruit, if you will. Yeah. But this is a big deal. And it's not just because of his rating, but it's because of his name. Because Steve Sarkesian won the most coveted prize that we may have ever seen in recruiting in college football.
Starting point is 00:39:07 And it's not just that that guy chose Texas. It's that the Manning family chose Texas and Steve Sarkisian. I mean, I really believe that this is going to. send Texas into another stratosphere as far as recruiting goes, because every single recruit out there in particular offensive skill position players are going to be looking at this and saying, listen, it doesn't matter who wins this position, we're going to have a quarterback at Texas that is outstanding and a quarterback that understands how to operate. Remember now, the last time Steve's Darkeesian had weapons, he had one of the best offenses, maybe in the
Starting point is 00:39:45 history of college football, with Mack Jones and Devante Smith and Nubonty Smith and Nubon. Najee Harris, all these guys at Alabama and you see what he was able to do, I firmly believe that Texas is heading right down that road to have an offense like that here in the next couple of years. Because if I'm a recruit and I'm looking out there and I'm like, all right, listen, the Manning family is allowing Arch to go to Texas and they trust Steve Sarkesian. That's a huge feather in the cap. And it might overtake what A&M has done in recruiting. Because remember, A&M won the year last year. So you can say like, well, Texas Teng and Jimbo Fisher, they're the best for recruiting college program in the state of Texas.
Starting point is 00:40:26 Can you say that now with Arch Manning going to the University of Texas? I'm not sure. And I think that we're probably going to see a slide towards and a movement towards Texas and Steve Sarkeesian. We'll see if that pays off with wins on the field. We're talking to Joel Clatt on the herd, USFL semifinals this weekend. You and I haven't had an opportunity to talk about NIL, although I feel like we're kind of a. aligned with it. Obviously, it's a very long, nuanced conversation, and I feel like you and I could talk about it for hours. It seems a little bit like it's calmed down. Maybe it's just the time of
Starting point is 00:40:58 year that we're in. But really quickly, my solve for it, I think, is mostly just based on the fact that I think everyone's freaking out and stuff usually corrects itself. People aren't going to keep throwing millions of dollars against the wall if it doesn't result in a championship, first of all, which is why I don't, I'm not that concerned about it. Like, there's stuff. that's expensive now. And if you're going to keep paying millions of dollars for an offensive line and you don't want a championship, eventually going to stop doing that. But if you could suggest just one temporary solve for NIL for college football specifically,
Starting point is 00:41:32 because obviously this is a much bigger conversation than just college football. For college football specifically, what would it be? Man, that's a, first of all, that's a great question. And you're right. We could probably go on your podcast and talk for hours about NIL and everything that goes along with it. There aren't that many quick fixes. And I think you would acknowledge that, right?
Starting point is 00:41:51 And I think that's part of the problem is that it runs so deep. If there were to be a quick fix, if you will, or something that you could do in the near term, I think it would be enforce the rules on the books. So a lot of people will discuss NIL and say, it's the Wild Wild West. There's no rules, you know, let's go. But that's not the case. The problem is, and I've said this before with you guys, the problem is, is that the NCAA or the governing body, whoever it is, right? They're not enforcing the rules that are already there.
Starting point is 00:42:29 So, Joy, we have rules about boosters. We have rules about inducements. We have rules about tampering. And all of those things are where I think NIL has been kind of like bastardized and used in a way in which it shouldn't be used. and if we just enforce those rules, and we said, listen, you can't tamper with a current student athlete at a different school. You can't induce a recruit based on the NIL to get them to come to your school. You can't have a booster that is specifically there just to pay a player
Starting point is 00:43:01 that is not tied to a legitimate NIL entity. If we just enforce those rules, I think a lot of this would start to iron itself out. Joel Clatt this weekend, catch him the USFL semi-finals, Philadelphia stars New Jersey General, Saturday 3 Eastern and Fox on Fox, and Clat and the Big Noon crew have their first game on Thursday, September 1st, Penn State at Purdue, 7 p.m. Eastern on Fox. It's going to be an exciting season, but make sure you check out USFL semifinals this weekend. Thank you for joining us, Joel. Good to see you. And enjoy week two will be in Austin for Alabama, Texas. So that'll be a fun one.
Starting point is 00:43:36 Yummy. Enjoy the weekend, Joel. Thank you. Great to see you. You too. Joy Taylor in for Colin Cowherd on the herd. Next, Seahawks are Panthers. They really want to invest in Baker Mayfield. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, I'm Doug Gottlie. The podcast is called All Ball. Starting point is 00:46:06 Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84's big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack,
Starting point is 00:46:32 so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now, so. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Joy Taylor in for calling Cowherd today and all next week, alongside Ryan Music. So Baker Mayfield is still in Cleveland. So I guess technically he's employed, but he's not going to be playing quarterback for Cleveland's this year.
Starting point is 00:48:30 I think he's a bridge quarterback at this point. That might be a stretch, considering that he really only has two suitors in Seattle. and Carolina, two rumored suitors. And those teams are going through camps. And Seattle has kind of slid into the most interested spot. Last week it was Carolina. Both would probably like Baker Mayfield,
Starting point is 00:48:52 but they don't want to pay for Baker Mayfield. In the end, the market tells you what you are. There are certain circumstances where you get a bad break, right? You're down on your luck. Someone has slandered you. You had a bad situation with a coach. There's something going on where the market doesn't really understand your value and you go to a situation and thrive.
Starting point is 00:49:11 Sometimes that happens. And then sometimes you're on every other TV commercial. You have a Super Bowl level roster coach of the year and you end up essentially unemployed, which is a situation that Baker's in. So he created this situation for himself. He did not have a bad break. You can't have the situation that Baker had overall and consider it a bad break. I, like the rest of the market, just don't think Baker is that good.
Starting point is 00:49:35 and when you have to consider everything else that comes with Baker, it doesn't really seem that it's worth it. Carolina and Seattle, the only two teams that have been linked to him, agree with that. That's why they don't want to pay for him. Seattle has Drew Locke. Carolina has Sam Darnold. Do I think that Baker is on the field better than both of them a little bit,
Starting point is 00:49:56 but they're not even willing to pay the guaranteed money, the $18 million, which is a steal for a franchise quarterback at this point. So the market tells you what you are. And when you look at the entirety of Baker Mayfield's career in Cleveland, he had one good year. We know the year that it was. They went to the playoffs. They beat the Steelers in the playoff game, which is nice. It was a nice year.
Starting point is 00:50:18 He had a almost perfect roster around him, coach of the year. But if you look at everything else that happens around Baker Mayfield, and this is a significant body of work to evaluate, it's been bad. You can talk about his rookie year. They were still bad. They were not a good team. what you do know is that Baker cannot elevate a dysfunctional situation or an average roster. We know that. We can see that. We watched it. Carson Wentz is getting a third opportunity at a higher price point. Baker can't end up on another team yet. You can't create that much chaos for yourself
Starting point is 00:50:52 in an already chaotic situation and then expect people to react to your talent alone. So it was cute for about two weeks and then it became ridiculous to anyone who doesn't eat the lint out of their belly button. This situation was off the rails very early. I've sold my Baker's stock and my Brown stock entirely a while ago, and I feel great about it. It is not an ascending stock. I don't know where Baker's going to end up, but I do know that the people are going to do everything that they can
Starting point is 00:51:19 to pay as little as they can for him. And no matter where he goes, he's not going to end up at a great organization because they wouldn't be in this situation to begin with. Can't elevate a bad roster, and that's probably where he's going to end up. Coming up, Mary Kay Cabot gives us an insider's look into Baker's future, plus everything else that's going on with the Sean Watson situation.
Starting point is 00:51:39 And will Kevin Durant force his way out of Brooklyn? What's going on in Brooklyn with Kyrie and Kevin Durant?
