Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule. of two.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Listen to Stuff to Bole Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Cliver Show. This is a place for raw, unfills of conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast.
Starting point is 00:02:12 Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeart Radio app by searching Hurd. Now let's get this party started. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go. It is a Thursday.
Starting point is 00:02:36 Tonight's the night. Game 6 in Boston, Warriors can close out the NBA season with a win. It's the hurt. Wherever you may be in, however you may be listening, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. Joy Taylor filled in for me yesterday. I'm back. We got a lot of things going on today.
Starting point is 00:02:54 Tonight could be the end of the NBA season. I'm not sure if it's going to be. My gut feeling is Boston's going to play well. It's my feeling. But again, it's the NBA finals. This has been a zigzag theory until the last series until the last game when the Warriors the first time went back-to-back game.
Starting point is 00:03:11 So, Joy, what do you got tonight? Who do you like? You've been pretty good on the temperature of this series. Who do you have? I think Boston wins tonight. I think it goes seven. I've had it going seven since the start. And it's going to be a rough arena to walk into.
Starting point is 00:03:24 Not the Golden State hasn't seen that before, But Boston's going to give him their all. During the bubble season, I was texting with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. He's pretty smart. Owns 50 businesses, billionaire. And I'm talking about, to him, I'm emailing Mark because you can email Mark Cuban. And he's one of those rare business superstars who emails back. And we're kind of arguing about the league and where it's going.
Starting point is 00:03:50 And I give him a list, a very, very small, small list, six, six. long of NBA superstars. He says way too big. Because he knows the metrics of NBA superstars. The biggest mistake fans often make is confusing star with superstars. There's very few superstars. The NFL's got three. Brady, Mahomes, Aaron Rogers.
Starting point is 00:04:15 That's it. That's it. That's it. It's generally Super Bowls several in many cases. And Jason Tatum, tonight. He's a star. Many of you think Russell Westbrook is, nine-time All-Star MVP. When Kevin Durant got traded to the Warriors, the commissioner of the NBA thought it was unfair. He's like, there's nothing I can do about it, but I don't think it's good for our competition.
Starting point is 00:04:46 When Russell Westbrook gets traded to the Lakers, the only question is, will he screw it up? To be a superstar, you have to not only change the temperature of your team, you have to change the temperature of the league you're in. People start drafting players to stop Shaq. People start drafting hiring coaches to stop Michael Jordan or Larry Bird. Like Nick Saban's a superstar in college football, he's had 40 coaches fired in a conference. Tom Brady literally changed the way the Jets, the Dolphins, and the Bills drafted players. Peyton Manning did that in his division.
Starting point is 00:05:24 That's a superstar. Kevin Durant is a superstar. Westbrook's a star. It's not changing the temperature of any room. Shaq, MJ, LeBron, Dr. Jay. Literally the Eastern Conference. LeBron leaves, it's totally different.
Starting point is 00:05:41 Nobody got to the finals while he was there. So Jason Tatum, to me, is a star. I don't see superstar ever. If Chris Middleton doesn't get hurt, I think Milwaukee beats Boston. Without Chris Middleton, it took him seven. I mean, do you think without Jalen Brown, Milwaukee would have needed seven if they had a healthy Chris Middleton and Janice and Drew Holliday? And so it's the thing about it like supermodels.
Starting point is 00:06:07 Giselle, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford. If I've heard of you, you're not a model. If I've heard of you, you're a superstar. And there's not many. Naomi and Giselle and Cindy are way up at the top. We're talking eight figure, $300 million net worth. And even in the NFL, which is much more popular in the NBA, it's a tight list. It's under five.
Starting point is 00:06:30 I think it's three. I think if Russell Wilson won a Super Bowl or two in Denver in the next three years, then he gets up there. But the next two games, here's the opportunity for Jason Tatum to break through. Because if he can overcome, go through these maze of obstacles, and that's what made Jordan a superstar, not the points. It's not the points. it was that he had to get through Detroit and he had to get through magic and he had to get through bird and he became ours like Michael we watched him we didn't like Detroit they were tackling him
Starting point is 00:07:03 and we didn't like the chippy play of Boston and Michael got through both and he was glamorous and good looking and cool and he was ours and outside of Chicago he was still wildly popular there's a tiny tiny tiny group of superstars and they change the temperature of the league and they make it through a series of obstacles. Tonight's the start for Jason Tatum. Or I'd love to have him on my team. But I mean, Zach Levine, good player. He doesn't change his own team.
Starting point is 00:07:33 Bradley Beale, I love him. Did he make his team great? That's a star. Westbrook, players often left him and got better. That's a star, regardless of how many awards you have. So for Jason Tatum, this may be a golden opportunity, not only to win the finals, win it from down in the finals,
Starting point is 00:07:53 beat Steph, Drayman, and Clay, and Kerr in the finals. That's how you catapult yourself from star to superstar. And they're very few. And by the way, what you can't do is question publicly verbalize whether you're a superstar. I'm sure that I've seen it as a huge debate. Is he a superstar? Is he not? I want to know where that came from.
Starting point is 00:08:19 Did I tweet that? Did I ever say that I'm a superstar or, you know, I'm on the verge? Like, that never came from me. But it has been a big deal, it was last year and a half or two years. And I see it all the time. And there's always been a question of the back of my head. Like, I wonder who spoke on my behalf or said that or why that was such a big deal. Please, less of that.
Starting point is 00:08:44 Shack, Dr. J. Magic Bird, are not Michael LeBron, are not saying that. But fans always just, oh, superstar. Like, I'm not a car racing guy, but Dale Earnhardt, senior, when he was racing, I knew about him. That's a superstar. Jeff Gordon was a superstar. Everybody else just wins races. And a lot of guys win races. But if you don't follow car racing and you know the intimidator, you know the number of the car, that's a superstar.
Starting point is 00:09:13 Jason Tatum on his way tonight with a win and a winning game seven. And it's not easy and it wasn't for Jordan. So I saw this story yesterday, and it was celebrated. It was celebrated all over the media. No context. Just congrats. This is great. Minka Fitzpatrick is now the highest paid safety in the NFL in the history, a position that doesn't nor shouldn't be paid a lot.
Starting point is 00:09:36 He's a very good player. But everybody's like, yeah, he got his money. And I thought, Pittsburgh's getting into an interesting place. They have a great history. but almost none of it in the last 12 years. Their biggest rivals in the AFC all have better quarterbacks now than they do. They have a defensive coach in clearly an offensive league. And after the Minka Fitzpatrick signing,
Starting point is 00:10:04 the Steelers now have the most expensive defense in the NFL, number one, and the least money in the NFL invest in an offense, number 32. That ain't great in 2022. The standard in Pittsburgh used to be winning Super Bowls. You know what they brag about now? Mike Tomlin's never had a losing season. I mean, that's not a negative, but that's something like the Browns
Starting point is 00:10:33 would be happy with. I mean, seriously, take it to college football. Would Ohio State ever brag about, you know, our coaches never had a losing season? It's kind of the standard. I mean, when you're in a division for, years with the lowly Bengals and Browns, you should be four and oh against those two. The last two playoff games, Pittsburgh has been in.
Starting point is 00:10:56 They have trailed in both at one point by 28 points, four touchdowns. I mean, I'm all forgiven T.J. Watt as much as he wants. He is insane. And there's a handful of defensive players. Aaron Donald, show him the bag. But a star safety, the Steelers defense last year was ranked 24th. Pass Rock. anchored by T.J. Watt, exceptional. But it was 24th. I'd scale back on the big raises for the defensive guys not named T.J. Watt. Again, what is the standard?
Starting point is 00:11:34 I got nothing against Minkovitz Patrick. He's a very good player. But they're starting to feel like the Seahawks a little bit. They don't have nearly as good a quarterback as other people in their division. Seattle doesn't. I mean, what if Tray Lance is good? Then it's Stafford, Kyler Murray, and Tray Lance? And you go Drew Locke?
Starting point is 00:11:55 Defensive coach, like the Seahawks, haven't had any real success in a long time in the playoffs, and you pay a lot of money to safeties, and your defense has been getting worse for years. I know we all like to celebrate athletes getting money, and I'm all for athletes getting money. And Mink is fantastic. I love the trade. He's a playmaker,
Starting point is 00:12:15 and you had to pay him something. get it. But the standard in Pittsburgh, I don't know, in the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, my entire life was like Super Bowls and not just getting to them. I mean, ask yourself as a Steeler fan. When they got to the Super Bowl and lost to Green Bay, to go out and party that night? Is that a big night for you in Pittsburgh? No, it's just Steelers. Steelers don't lose Super Bowls. They get to them against Arizona and win. They get to them all sorts of times with Terry Bradshaw and when. They got to one with Big Ben and Seattle and won. What's the standard?
Starting point is 00:12:54 I don't know. It feels like to me a defensive coach, 32nd in offensive spending, first in defensive spending. That is not a place I'd want to be in 2022 and going forward. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
Starting point is 00:13:22 It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. Starting point is 00:14:49 Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tantons and wampas
Starting point is 00:15:07 on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith Rule of Two. Listen to Stuff to Blow Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
Starting point is 00:15:27 I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:15:51 I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Then you're finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really?
Starting point is 00:16:09 Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app. Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. You're now entering the Noble Zone, sponsored by credible great rates with none of the bowl. So Tom Brady was on the Dan Patrick show yesterday and he was talking about, I mean, I think we've all kind of sensed this with Tom, is that, you know, he was Mr. Focus, Mr.
Starting point is 00:16:34 intense. Just know, there was, I mean, literally he'd take footballs and invite teammates with a supermodal life the minute he won a Super Bowl down to Costa Rica. Like that is obsessed. I think Russell Wilson now to me is the only athlete in America. He's moved to the obsessed list. Total focused all the time, 24-7. Russell Wilson said during the time he broke his finger,
Starting point is 00:16:56 he was rehabbing 19 hours a day. That is beyond even a driven, focused athlete. So Brady was talking about it. I think it's a very interesting bite by Tom. Here it is. Time went by and then you just get super competitive, you know, and I think I'm part crazy. I mean, I think that's the reality.
Starting point is 00:17:18 45 years old, and I'm out here with a lot of young guys that are trying to take my head off. And I see Aaron Donald work out on my Instagram. I'm like, damn, maybe I should have retired, you know? Because he's a beast. But, you know, I had the appetite to compete. And it's going to be gone soon. I mean, there's no doubt about it. And I got to, you know, just really appreciate what the time I have left, because it's not a lot.
Starting point is 00:17:43 You know, and after he won his first Super Bowl with Tampa, I've never felt it's the same. And it always comes back to this. Three words. Something to prove. It's not money. It's not fame. After he won without Belichick, he was already the goat. We already said that. We spoke that into existence. He played that into existence. He's happily married, great family, rich, won. But he always had to prove something. It wasn't Belichick. It was me. So when he won in Tampa, did you notice last year? He didn't bark as much. He didn't complain as much. You and I knew he wasn't happy around Thanksgiving. Joy and I talked about this on the show. It's like you can tell he's not really happy. But he wasn't as angry. He wasn't as pointed. Some of it festered. Nothing ever with Brady festered. Ever in New England. Ever in the first year. Something to prove. I saw this with LeBron James. After he won in the bubble in Los Angeles. He had nothing to prove. He loses what he has. He loses what he. He has. He visit the next year to Phoenix in the playoffs in the locker room after the playoff loss he's like I can't wait for space jam can you imagine him saying that nine years ago
Starting point is 00:18:53 I mean you literally drive from the locker room home and start working out for the next season and I think I think something to prove is a big deal now now Aaron Rogers after he won a Super Bowl said is this all there is so for Aaron it's not a knock on Aaron after he won the Super Bowl. Maybe Aaron's never quite been the same. What does he have to prove? He doesn't have the family dynamic, but he's like rich and happy and he won a Super Bowl. And Aaron said at the time, all right, is that it? And I do think winning in L.A. and winning in Tampa, you're just out of the something to prove arena. And there's a story that's been fairly well documented by people I trust that Tom was ready to move into ownership last year.
Starting point is 00:19:39 and it's one of the reasons I don't like Tampa this year is that I don't think they're, I don't think they're talented enough to not be focused. Because I still think the Rams want to prove it wasn't a one-off. I think McVeigh's got stuff to prove. I think he's got stuff to prove in division against Kyle Shanahan and San Francisco who had his number.
Starting point is 00:20:00 I think Stafford wants to prove a lot of guys have won one, one Super Bowl. Very few, two or more. All those losing seasons in Detroit, Matt Stafford's guy. One Super Bowl is not enough for me. And so I do think. I think that three words, something to prove. And it's an incredibly health.
Starting point is 00:20:20 It's not a criticism at all. It's absolutely healthy. I mean, what do you need now? I don't think Tom needs anything. And the fact that he can self-reflect and go, yeah, folks, he really, if he had the perfect scenario, would have been in Miami now in the ownership space. That's where he wants to be. Not as much on football, which you can't even think about five years ago.
Starting point is 00:20:42 Forget 10. Joy with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. George Kittle thinks there should be more buys during a 17-game season. Recently told Kevin Hart on his show, cold as balls, that he thinks that they need to add another one.
Starting point is 00:21:01 He said there's a huge physical toll, and like 17 games is a lot. It's a lot of games with one buy, whether it's week four, the buys week 11. I'm advocating for two buys. Now, this is coming from a guy who is obviously extremely physical, plays like his hair is on fire. And he also mentioned that he spends a couple hundred thousand dollars on his body every single year. I, you know what? I think this is actually one of those things that feels almost like, why does starters play in the NFL preseason? It feels obvious. And it just takes somebody. I mean, you know, this is something if a great player like a Mahomes, Josh Allen, Russ Wilson said,
Starting point is 00:21:38 hey, I'm obsessed and I think we need two weeks off. I think it's, and for the record, to extend the NFL season for you and I another week, but they play the Super Bowls mostly in warm weather or domes. What do we care if it ends February 20th? I mean, I think I didn't like the addition of the game because I think that urgency is the biggest by far. The jewel that the NFL has. It's built into the style of the game that every single game matters.
Starting point is 00:22:04 The more games you add, the less of games during the regular season. matter. That's the issue that many of these leagues are dealing with. So I didn't like it for that reason. And obviously when you talk about health, it becomes a big conversation as well. Now, the loss of the additional buy in the postseason
Starting point is 00:22:20 affects how coaches can manage their teams during the regular season because you would think, oh, we have it locked up. You know, we can rest some guys, but there's only one buy. So you really can't rest your starters either. So I agree with you. I think it will take the top level players pushing forward, obviously.
Starting point is 00:22:36 the NFLPA has to negotiate something like this as well. But this is also something that the owners should consider when they decided to make this move. Like if you look at the NBA, players are looking to shorten the season. Like cut games. The NFL guys are like, we're okay with having another game. Just give us another week off. And to me, to me, if I owned a company and my employees are like, I don't want to work less. Can I have another week vacation?
Starting point is 00:23:00 Yeah, for the growth of the company. That's a much easier ass than go from 80 to NBA games to 68, where I'm like, have contracts with cable networks. It's much harder to cut games. Yes. It's easier to add a buy. Obviously, when you talk about scheduling, like, it's a lot, but you have to figure out a way to do this if you want players to be healthy and available in the postseason,
Starting point is 00:23:21 which is another huge issue that you run into with the NFL being a collision sport. Like you've added an extra game. If you're not going to give players rest, particularly a player like George Kittle, I think, is a great person to talk about this. Like, he's a huge advocate for player safety, but he's a huge advocate for players. but he's also somebody who's not going out there precious. So he can tell you, and he's dealt with injuries as well. He's missed 13 games since 2019 with various injuries.
Starting point is 00:23:46 Yeah, he's an old school football player. Fans love old school football players that'll play hurt. We're just asking for another week off. I think it's the future of the sport. I think it's the future of all these sports. Spread the season out. More by weeks. More rest.
Starting point is 00:24:01 Yeah. So NFL gave teams two by weeks in 1993 to extend the season for the new. TV deals and because they were sensitive to possible over exposure of our sport. Paul Tagliabu said that in 1990. Now, the two buys failed because of how they were divided up and because of its effect on TV schedules. But, I mean, this is something that hopefully they considered before they decided to make the move to expand the season that this is a collision sport.
Starting point is 00:24:28 I mean, player safety was obviously the first thing that came up when they added the game. Like, you can't really talk about player safety when you're adding an extra game. And we even talked about just give them an extra game. extra buy. So I think there'll be more momentum for this and it will probably be something we end up seeing. So Baker Mayfield continues to be a point of conversation, a possible trade to the Panthers remains a possibility. But a report yesterday indicates that a swap for Sam Darnold is probably not in the works. Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reported that it's very unlikely and it is her source is confident. It's not happening. She added that the Browns are comfortable with
Starting point is 00:25:02 Jacoby Brissette and Josh Jobs is their quarterbacks in the event that Watson is. suspended for all a part of 2022. Brissette has started 37 career games. Jobs have started none, but Brissette is a perfectly capable backup quarterback. I mean, if he has to start the entire season, I have the Browns as a
Starting point is 00:25:19 complete, they're off my board for predictions. Until we know what's going on with Disham Watson, there's no way to predict how things are going to go this season. At the very least, he's going to miss six games. How do you account for that, especially in this division with Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow.
Starting point is 00:25:35 and then you have to consider that the Steelers are going to either have Tripisky or a rookie quarterback and they have a great defense. It's just not a division you're going to stay afloat in without a quarterback. But swapping for Sam Donald doesn't make any sense. He's not an upgrade over Jacoby Bressett. And you don't need to be that desperate if you're Carolina. Now, obviously, they don't want to pay Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield, which is the conversation that is holding up any possible trade to begin with.
Starting point is 00:26:00 So the Warriors have been criticized lately that they have a competitive spending advantage over the rest of the league. We just don't have enough money our own. Yankees did for basically the until cable exploded. I mean, the Yankees still have an advantage. For some reason, I don't know exactly what it is, but yes, network,
Starting point is 00:26:23 they don't have to share with the rest of the league. I think I'm right on that. Like the Yankees, for all you people that are whining about this, some of it is anti-California. Well, I doubt that they're Yankees fans either. I mean, they've had a competitive. The Dodgers, by the way, have a competitive event. The Yankees have a competitive event.
Starting point is 00:26:38 Baseball teams with their cable deals have huge. There's a huge difference. Well, the other conversation is this is a salary cap league. So, you know, in baseball, it's kind of understandable. And if you don't have enough money, you're just not competing. Right. But basketball is supposed to be a little bit more fair. Well, Zaza Pachulia responded to this criticism about their spending advantage.
Starting point is 00:27:01 We're not doing something that it's illegal or it's against. the rules, right? It's totally legal. So, you know, that talks, I mean, that's been a partnership group. Joe Jacob and, you know, Peter Goeber has done for this. Honestly, I have never seen anywhere that the ownership group being so dedicated and, you know, to be thinking about the players and their families. I think it's abhorrent the response to the Golden State Warriors and what they have done. Your billionaire owner could do the exact same.
Starting point is 00:27:44 he's not committed. I don't have respect for organizations that don't spend money and take care of their players and take care of their players' families and run good cultural institutions. I'm not interested in it. I don't care. I can't stand talking about places that are dysfunctional. It is no interest to me. It's not that hard to treat people the right way.
Starting point is 00:28:04 You own a team, expect to write some checks, and give your fans what they deserve, which is a winning culture and organization and reward the players that you draft, which is exactly what Golden State does. So here's why you should feel no sympathy for owners. Over the last 10 years, the television business now has Apple and Amazon driving up annual fees. Right. For the rights for those games, yes. Huge win for the billionaire owners.
Starting point is 00:28:32 They're getting more money from TV now because Apple and Amazon are freaking out networks like this, CBS. How do we stave off Apple and Amazon? They pay more than they want for the rights and get. fewer games maybe than they want, right? And so the networks have no control, for instance, over a lot of these leaks. The NBA, if they went to market right now, everybody would bid on him. Of course. So with the last 10 years with tech companies entering this space, it is fortified all these owners. The second thing is, globally, because of the chaos in the market, now our stock market's been great for 12 years. We're having a down month or maybe a down cycle for the
Starting point is 00:29:13 since World War II, every six years, we go into a recession. We've gone like 12 years with no recession. So it happens in America. If you're 28 and you have Bitcoin money, this is what happens in your life about four or five, six times. So by the way, globally, all the richest people in the world now are buying teams. So the valuation for all professional teams, you just saw what Apple paid for the MLS has gone through the roof. So if you lose 50 million a year, your team's going up worth 250 million a year. Can you imagine Steve Balmer bought the Clippers for $2 billion? And people are like, whoa, he got taken to the cleaners. He could sell it for a 40% profit. Now that he's building his own revenue producing arena, that thing is going to be worth
Starting point is 00:29:59 $5 billion by the time that arena is fixed. And that was considered a bad deal, the second team in L.A., the losing his franchise in the league. Well, the other thing that bothers me about this idea that the Warriors are just writing checks for what they're doing. They drafted Steph Curry, seventh overall, by the way. He was not the number one overall pick. Drafted Clay Thompson at the 11th overall pick. And Jemond Green was a second round pick. They drafted and developed this team. They won a championship with this core before Kevin Durant got there. If we don't appreciate the way that the Golden State Warriors organization does business. Who are we happy about? I'm just curious. Why does everything have to be a struggle?
Starting point is 00:30:44 What is this idea? They built this. They created this. They developed this. And now they want to pay the people. They nurtured this. They pay these players. Who, by the way, are loyal, because that's such a big deal to everybody, are loyal to this organization. Now all of a sudden we're mad that the owner is going to spend money to keep this together and continue winning and reward his loyal fans that have gone through a few years of downtime with injuries and whatnot. What is it that everyone's mad about? I'm really confused. I don't think the NBA should have a salary cap per se because it's not working.
Starting point is 00:31:20 Obviously, it's not working. Players go where they want to go. To me, if you draft and develop a player and you always pay them, I don't think you should be penalized for it. Ever. You should pay for Kevin Durant to come. The tax bill is $170 million. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:35 Which, by the way, they're able to write that check because there's all those fans in those seats. Yeah. Watching a good product that they put together. I really need to know what the negative is here. It's just this like backlash for money and I understand that. But I'm not going to get mad at an organization for doing things the right way and paying the guys that they drafted. I just don't know how you're supposed to do business. I'm very confused.
Starting point is 00:31:56 Yeah, Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd lies. The story is really fascinating to me. On a lot of micro and macro levels, you know, those great golfers a handful have left the PGA tour. And the PGA tour is like, fine, you're banned from the PGA tour. Yeah, the problem is the PGA tour doesn't control the Masters or the U.S. Open or the British Open or the PGA championship or the Ryder Cup.
Starting point is 00:32:24 All the stuff, you know, you and I care about and all the stuff the great golfers care about. The PGA is a lot like boxing. It's really divided, and this was bound to happen. It happened in boxing like 15 years ago. It was called the UFC, which almost put boxing out of business. So boxing was so divided. Bob Aram and Don King and this promoter and that promoter in a million belts and a million categories. And then UFC came in and said, nah, we're going to do it this way.
Starting point is 00:32:51 We got a guy named Dana White, Fratita family. They're going to run it. One guy, one centralized voice. And basically, that's what I watch on the weekends now. I don't watch boxing as much. I watch UFC. Okay, so that's what the PGA is. And golfers have said, this is not LeBron leaving the NBA.
Starting point is 00:33:10 This is not Patrick Mahomes leaving the NFL. These are all independent contractors. I don't root for the PGA. What is the PGA? Hell, it's a charity. It's a charity. It's a church with a golf bag. I don't root for it.
Starting point is 00:33:25 I don't care about it. What I care about, like boxing, was Sugar Ray Leonard. Marvin Hagler. I cared about boxers. I didn't care about boxing. I care about golfers. I don't care about PGA. And these independent contractors are like,
Starting point is 00:33:42 you control our media rights. Phil Mickelson had to spend a million dollars just to buy images of him and video of him playing. It's him. So this was bound to happen. PGA is a charity. I don't root. For all the golf tournaments,
Starting point is 00:33:58 I care about, all the golf tournaments, the great players care. about. PGA has no control over. They don't control the British Open, which I love, the Masters, which you and I love, the U.S. Open, the Riter Cup, the PGA championship. PGA doesn't control any of them. Now, the U.S. GA, which controls the U.S. Open, it may come in and suspend the players, and that would hurt. That would hurt if I was, the U.S. Open to me is, especially when you played at Pebble Beach or Pinehurst, it is just you can't turn the TV off all weekend. At least I can't. But, you know, I get all this stuff. Folks,
Starting point is 00:34:30 it's hard for me to be outraged when I give to the Saudis too. It's called the oil and gas in my car. I give to China too. An impressive dictatorship because I have an iPhone. I don't have to love what these golfers are doing and I have said this. I'd have a hard time leaving the PGA. I just wouldn't want all the blowback. But I'll say it again.
Starting point is 00:34:53 I get it. I totally get it. And I do believe this is the future of sports. Remember, Apple just came in and bought the MLS. Because the MLS said, why do I want to be the seventh most promoted marketed sport on ESPN? Apple says, you're our number one. MLS is like, bye-bye. Huge win for MLS.
Starting point is 00:35:15 This is the future of sports. If it wasn't Saudi money, let's say Apple said, we're going to buy the tour. It's not Saudi money. It's Apple money. Would you be outraged? No, and every stinking golfer would have left. Every single one would have left. Because what do they get?
Starting point is 00:35:35 What does Mickelson get from the PGA? He didn't get the Masters, doesn't get the U.S. Open, doesn't get the Riders Cup, doesn't get the PGA Championship, doesn't get the British Open, doesn't even get his media rights. Got pay a million bucks for him. That's why I'm defending these golfers.
Starting point is 00:35:51 Not because I like the fact they're doing it for oil money, but if it was Silicon Valley and Apple, you'd have no problem with it. Why should they be loyal? I understand your argument about loyal to American values. That I get. That's why it turns my stomach a little. But I do think this is the future of sports.
Starting point is 00:36:12 Is that gigantic companies like Amazon and Apple are going to come in and buy leagues. Now, you're not going to buy baseball because of antitrust exemptions. There are some stuff that protects the NBA, the NFL, and the NBA. But college football, by the way, keep your eye on it, is very vulnerable. So is the NCAA. I've said it before. If I ran a TV network, I'd go buy five teams in college football. I'd put them on my network.
Starting point is 00:36:35 Noon, three, seven, one on Sunday, maybe on Friday. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of taun tons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith Rule of Two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind
Starting point is 00:39:18 on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English.
Starting point is 00:39:40 Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:40:02 We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. history of the NBA playoffs.
Starting point is 00:40:25 Only eight guys have hit more threes than Danny Green, three-time NBA champ, 13 years in the NBA, he's out joining us live. He was a starter for 40 games for the Sixers this year, including the playoffs. So you know Boston really well in the Eastern Conference, and you've played a ton in the Western Conference and know the Warriors. So, you know, I said going into the series, I said I think Boston has more two-way players and more talented defensive players. I think the Warriors have a deeper reservoir of offensive players.
Starting point is 00:40:51 And I think we've seen that in the last couple of games. James. Is this series going the way, Danny, you thought it would? No. I think, let's say, we all agree. We think Boston was the better defensive team, had the more talent, the more depth, the more length, more athleticism. And we knew Golden State had more experience. So we weren't sure, but I think a lot of people predicted Boston to be a three-two and not Golden State. But Golden State is playing well. Andrew Wiggins is playing a hell of a series, and not just offensively, but defensively. And that's the difference maker right there with, you know,
Starting point is 00:41:25 Cetton, he's had some struggles. That's because Wiggins has been guarding him. He's playing. He's doing an outstanding job of guarding him on defense, but also offense putting pressure on them. Seth has been Steph, obviously two-time MVP and showing why he's been two-time MVP had a game where he carried him offensively. But, you know, it's a hell of a series,
Starting point is 00:41:42 but I think a lot of people predicted Boston to be on top right now. So Jason Tatum, at times, I think teams tend to follow their star and adopt the personality a little bit of their star. I think you see that in the NBA. And I think Jason Tatum's a great young man, but at times this team gets tight. This team shrinks. And I think Jason's still a developing player.
Starting point is 00:42:03 Doesn't quite have that. And so I think sometimes they take in his personality. I do think at times, Danny, they don't have championship level confidence. That's what my eyes see. Do you ever see it? I agree. I think it's just the championship level maturity, more so anything. And I said they're still all developing.
Starting point is 00:42:20 they're still all young. They take not just Tatum's personality, but Brown, smart. You know, I think smart's toughness brings some out of Horford. Obviously, he's one of their older veterans. Tatum, yes, he is a superstar, but, you know, right now he's, you know, having some inconsistent playoff games where it's not back-to-back or consistent throughout the series. And there's times where he said he's getting hot, and then it's times where he just goes cold
Starting point is 00:42:43 and he say it may shrink. And a lot of team kind of follows suit. But I do love the fact that he's humble. I do love the fact that he makes place for his team. I think he needs to be more aggressive, but I just think, I said, I talked about it on my pod earlier inside the green room about him to be able to attack and get more of the switch. Obviously, we know he can score on anybody, but it makes a lot easier to make plays when you get the switch of a weaker defender other than Wiggins on you to able to attack score, but not just the score, but to attack and make a play for your team. What do you make of the Warriors? I felt like going into the season, their young guys weren't ready and their old guys were too old, and it was a hard thing to bridge.
Starting point is 00:43:18 that's what it kind of felt like to me. The old guys were all banged up a little bit and expensive, and the young guys like Cominga and Moody just weren't ready. Are you surprised at all they've gotten here? I'm not surprised at all because I don't think the old guys are that old. I do think the young guys are young. I think their young guys weren't ready, but Poole has shown himself, he's proven himself to be very valuable
Starting point is 00:43:38 throughout these playoffs, even though in his finals he hasn't played, the way he's played, I guess, in the previous series. But a lot of their young guys have proven, and they've been prepared and been groomed. the last two years since they have made the playoffs for these type of moments. But they're old guys very, very much still young enough to get it done. And that's why I'm not shocked or surprised at where they are right now. When you guys, Philadelphia, face the Warriors this year,
Starting point is 00:44:00 what was the biggest challenge defensively when you faced Golden State? Well, at the time, they didn't have clayback yet. So we were lucky enough to play them without another offensive threat. So the biggest was trying to chase theft, and he was on that run where he was having, you know, consecutive 30, 40, 40. points games and he was about to break the record for three-pointers in the season. So our biggest thing wasn't just not letting him get the record. We were trying to stop him for getting three-point of tenth because that allows us to win the
Starting point is 00:44:28 game. But just to focus on him and not let him beat us by himself, so we wanted the others to beat us. Now there are a lot more dangerous with Clayback and obviously Jordan Poole emerging. So it's a lot tougher. I don't know if Wicks played and we played him at home. He played him definitely on the road, but he's also emerged as a different type of player as the season went along as well. You know, he's an interesting guy, Andrew Wiggins, Danny, is that I think he has number one pick talent and he's a number one pick, you know, athlete.
Starting point is 00:44:57 But not everybody, not everybody wants to have that dog. Like in Minnesota, it's chaotic, four coaches, six years. That just beats players down. Like, I feel like, are you surprised at all that he has gone to the Warriors and is a number one pick is so comfortable almost immediately in that culture? Not at all, man. As you see, that atmosphere, that organization is a wing organization. It seems like everybody that goes there feels pretty comfortable and does well. And a lot of that is due to the effect of their foundation.
Starting point is 00:45:31 The step effect, obviously, Draymond, Clay, the encouragement, the confidence that those guys have. And I guess the way they allow you to feel comfortable, make you feel comfortable, make the game easier for you, allows you to play your game. But I think the biggest thing for him was mental. Like you said, playing for, you know, when you're a losing team or an organization where it's a little different where you're not winning games, it's harder to stay mentally locked in and to be that dog that you speak of. When you have, you know, certain guys around you play winning basketball, it makes it a lot easier to adapt that mentality. It's a lot easier to play that way. And you can see he's becoming a dog that a lot of people doubted him to be early in his years. His podcast is inside the green room.
Starting point is 00:46:13 What do you expect tonight? Boston at home, will they wilt? Is it over what's your gut feeling, Danny? Well, I've been expecting a lot of things from Boston and they haven't lived up to it. Last game, they didn't play, I would say they played probably one good quarter out of the three. And, you know, Tadam got hot in that third quarter.
Starting point is 00:46:31 They all played well at third quarter, but the rest of the game, the first half, they really didn't show up the fourth quarter. So it all depends, man, if they're mature enough to show up and play like they're supposed to play at the Boston team that I believe they can be. If they do, I think we're all hoping for a game seven. But I do expect them to bounce back
Starting point is 00:46:46 because they've been undefeated after losing one game every playoff series, but they've lost two now back to back. So I would assume and hope that they would come in with some fire, playing at home, and bounce back to get a win, and force the game seven. By the way, a minute left. What's the magic with Steve Kerr? Why is he so good?
Starting point is 00:47:03 I said he's a great confidence builder. He's great in encouraging his guys, not just his young guys, but his older guys. He believes in his players. And obviously, he's a descendant of pop, so he understands what it takes to win if you're professional. So he's done a great job. I was just grooming and building his guys like in Jordan Fool.
Starting point is 00:47:19 I remember two years ago, Jordan Fool was nowhere near the player he is now, but allowing him the freedom, allowing him to grow and give him that confidence and encouragement, you know, makes him be comfortable in this situation, be prepared and ready for these types of scenarios. So Steve Hur is in a great job. Also, X's an O, so he's making the right adjustments. He obviously has DNA, he knows how to win, not just as a coach, but as a player. So he understands the game to a high level, has a very high IQ, and knows how to make the right adjustments for his team.
Starting point is 00:47:46 to win. Even when we all know, it's that either man down or, you know, talent-wise, they're not as strong as other team. He can find ways to win and beat teams that are better than them. Yeah. Lude Olson, Greg Popovich, and Phil Jackson are the three mentors for Steve Kerr. Those are great coaches. Inside the Green Room is the podcast. Danny tells us he's going to be ready before the All-Star break. Good seeing you again, my man. Same, man. Thanks, thanks for having on the show, man. You bet. Inside the Green Room. No, I mean, just think about that. I mean, we're all products of what we see every day. Lute Olson, top 10 college coach ever, Greg Popovich, probably top five NBA
Starting point is 00:48:23 coach ever, and Phil Jackson, probably the best coach ever. That's what he watched for years and years and years. That's what Steve Kerr watched. Now, on his own, he's smart. That helps, though. That helps a lot. If your three bosses are like three of the top five bosses collectively in their respective sports.
