Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer,
Starting point is 00:00:18 Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
Starting point is 00:00:39 It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:04 Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of Ton Tons and Wampas on the Ice Planet Hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule. of two. Listen to Stuff to Bole Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:01:39 Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Cliver Show. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go.
Starting point is 00:02:34 It is a Monday. We've already got breaking news today. Live in Los Angeles, it's the herd. Wherever you may be, however you may be listening. I got Jimmy Johnson on the show today, Sean Payton on the show today, Greg Olson on the show today, one hour from now. Where Colin was right, where Colin was wrong. Breaking news. Frank Wright.
Starting point is 00:02:57 been fired, head coach of the Colts, J-MAC is joining me in a Monday. Frank Reich, if I had an opening, would be at the very top of my list. I think he's an excellent coach. But remember, this owner now, Jim Mersey says running the organization. So the GM and the coach basically do what they're told. They didn't want to get rid of Carson Wentz. They did. Make fun of Carson Wentz all you want.
Starting point is 00:03:23 You had a very good year last year. Now they're trapped. Good division. You know, if you go there as a head coach, good division, great chance to win some games, right? AFC South, but the ownership situation, less stable, Colin. Let's just say that. Yeah. So we'll get into that more later.
Starting point is 00:03:37 Let's start with this. For years and years, there was this discussion about Aaron Rogers is better than Tom Brady. And I'm like, folks, it's not just about throwing pretty passes. The media loved Aaron Rogers. He's a little like them, self-absorbed. But Brady actually is no passive aggressive. barks, yells, confrontational, never quits, total foxhole guy. Yesterday is a great example of the difference over the last year or two of Aaron and Tom Brady.
Starting point is 00:04:06 Now, in defensive Aaron yesterday, they were missing their top receiver got hurt on the first play of the game. That did not help at all. So let's be fair here. You know, kid gets hurt. Reek before, Christian Watson got hurt. He didn't have a ton to deal with. But this league, the NFL humbles you very quickly if you are not all. in all the time. Off season, during season, sideline, and Aaron hasn't always been all in,
Starting point is 00:04:34 especially in a season with kid-wide receivers. You see quarterbacks decline. I see quarterbacks decline. It's usually a physical thing. But Aaron's often looked checked out during games. He keeps mentioning retirement over and over, which is why Devante Adams left. He won't commit off-season or in-season to developing, putting your arms around, and mentoring young receivers. I talk to old legendary quarterbacks all the time. I really do. You know I love football and I love the quarterback position. And the guys that get out of it, they can still play, but they don't want to go all in physically. They find they're close to 40. Teammates are 20. They don't have a lot in common. So they call to rap. And I get it. And with Aaron, he's becoming a lot like older
Starting point is 00:05:23 Brett Farb. And I've always been an Aaron guy more than a Farv guy. I think Aaron's smarter. I think he, I don't, Farv was too gunslinger for me. I know he, he related to middle America and Aaron's more coastal, but I've always been an errand guy over a Farv guy. But Aaron's becoming Favre, stubborn, rigid. I'm going to do things my way. I'm going to hint constantly at retirement as if I don't need the sport. So what did Green Bay do in the offseason? They went and got him his old 70-year-old quarterback coach. They went and overpaid for Randall Cobb because that's what made Aaron happy. Was that really the best move for the organization?
Starting point is 00:06:02 I'd argue it wasn't the best move for Aaron Rogers. He just doesn't want any discomfort anymore. He won't run an offense with motion. Remember at the end with Mike McCarthy? He would roll his eyes. I mean, that's literally been now reported. I'm not going to run that play. I'm not going to do motion.
Starting point is 00:06:18 I want Randall Cobb. I want my old quarterback coach. I don't want to throw to young receivers. It's becoming very Brett Farr. And I do think Aaron still is a great, great player, but I think he took a lot for granted this year. Like, you know, we'll just beat Minnesota. No, Minnesota's got better players.
Starting point is 00:06:35 Oh, we'll sweep the lions. I don't know. Jared Goff in that offense, pretty good at home. Well, it's the Bears. I don't know. I looked at Chicago yesterday. That was one of the best losses of the year. Maybe yesterday was humbling.
Starting point is 00:06:49 I hope so. I don't think the season's over. I think the season for Green Bay is limited. because the quarterback, as I said all offseason, does not have the personality to put his arms around and be almost a surrogate father to these young receivers, and that's what it takes. I don't believe Aaron is washed physically.
Starting point is 00:07:08 I don't believe Russell Wilson is washed physically. Aaron throws a beautiful ball. Aaron is still athletic. Had a couple of nice scrambles yesterday. He's still smart. This is not beat up on Aaron Day. It be honest about Aaron Day, and Aaron needs to look in the mirror.
Starting point is 00:07:22 He needs to refocus. He needs to recommit. He's got to stop talking about retirement. That is why the Vante Adams left. You got to care more about your play caller and trust your play caller more than your shaman. Here's Aaron after. When I decided to come back, it was all in and I don't make decisions. And then, you know, hindsight, 2020, you know, have regrets about big decisions like that.
Starting point is 00:07:48 So I was all in. and this is a lot of life lessons for sure this year. But luckily it's not over. There's still a lot of games left. We'll be counted out probably by many. And we'll see how we respond. By the way, you were not all in. That is, that is, you went from being, from another earth to dating blue of earth,
Starting point is 00:08:15 to what in the world are we seeing currently on this earth, which is, I don't know what I see other than a quarterback who keeps talking retirement, who won't put his arms around receivers, who you saw the last couple of drives. I mean, he checked out. He's done with it. And I want to pivot now to Tom Brady because Tom Brady was the opposite of that. Think about Tom Brady's year. The biggest gap between Brady and Rogers, I talked about it for years, was
Starting point is 00:08:45 display yesterday. Brady for the last year has been going through a public divorce. Don't think this thing got ugly two months ago. When you have a net worth of $500 million and she has a net worth of $600 million, they have been dealing with this divorce for a year, for a year. Okay, these things don't happen overnight. He's been dealing with that. He's been getting, you know, people taking shots and, oh, Tom's not committed. They can't run the ball. The receivers haven't helped him. Nobody can stay healthy. He fought with Bruce Ariens from the beginning, even though they got a super Bowl. But here was Tommy Brady invested to the final drive on the sidelines after the game, fighting no passive aggressive nonsense, no pouting on the field. Brady is 45 years old, and they are
Starting point is 00:09:30 asking him to throw almost 60 times a game. They can't run the ball. And this organization was always going to be a challenge. Do you remember what I said, okay, I'll pat myself in the back when he came to Tampa. I said, it's not going to be about players. It's going to be about the organization. Tom is committed, all in, intense, focused, and obsessed. Hey, I lived in Tampa. It's Ebor City. It's cocktails early.
Starting point is 00:09:55 It's warming and golf all winter long. It is a loose non-buttoned-up organization. And it is to this day. It has always been an underachieving loose organization with tons of talent. They've never struggled with talent. James Winston's teams had talent. But Tom from Day, one has been asked to be the adult in the room.
Starting point is 00:10:18 Sinch it up. Put your arms around it. Galvanize it. Put a fence around it. Let's get all in here, guys. All focused. And that first year, we saw him yelling and screaming and dog cussing. And in the by, they got it right, won a Super Bowl. And then last year at the end of the year, remember, it got a little loose. This is probably about the time Tom was struggling in his personal life. He had other focuses. He had things to deal with.
Starting point is 00:10:41 Like a family, his kids, concerns. It got loose. And once Tommy was. a little loose, forget it. That's what this organization is. They're all loose. Every day in Tampa, you're trying to get everybody all in. I covered the organization. I've always had like a soft spot for the Buccaneers, but it has been a struggle from day one to make sure everybody gets how important it is. Running backs, they gain weight, they lose weight, they fumble, they don't show up, linebackers, wide receivers, drop passes. It's still loose. It would be a mess without Tommy here. But you have to absolutely love how committed, how much of a foxhole guy Brady is. And he is living
Starting point is 00:11:22 proof of belief. I know it can be corny. And I know sometimes it's cringy. With Brady, you never doubt he believes. Maybe it's false hope, corny optimism. But I'm watching that game when he got that ball back with almost no time left. And I'm like, yep, that puppy's over. Here comes Tommy. They hadn't played well, they can't run the ball, he's throwing it for the 50 third time, the 54 time, the fifth. And that's what it's all about. It's not just about you throw a pretty ball. It's about commitment all in.
Starting point is 00:11:59 You notice when Tom, when there was a retirement thing that came out about, was it six months ago, eight months ago about Brady? It was reported he had considered retirement. He didn't talk about it publicly because he knows you start talking about it. with your teammates and they're like, we're not all in. Who's guiding the ship? Yeah, Tommy did consider retirement. He didn't constantly throw it out there.
Starting point is 00:12:22 He wanted to hide it from people because he knows it's detrimental to the leadership and the quarterback process. But if you watch this Tampa thing, what's so miraculous about it, if you look at the history of this franchise, it's been one or two great leaders. Tony Dungey, great leadership qualities. Dungey. Tom Brady, great leadership qualities. It's taken that guy. It is taken that like iconic, classic lead men, lead them, Dungey, Brady. That's when they've had their success. And then those guys leave and they flail. If Tom left tomorrow, this organization would be flailing all over the
Starting point is 00:13:05 place. But I just loved. This was so Tom. Maybe this is his last come from behind when. Maybe this is it. but it just reeked of Tom and belief, and here he is after. That was awesome. That was fucking awesome. How much does this team need an emotional win like that? We needed it. We got it. We fought to the end.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Defense played great. Made some plays offensively. I know we left a few out there, but it's a team's tough team. Got some great players, glad we won. So many things happening today, Frank Reich, who I believe, leaves a very good coach. This will be the classic day. This is the way social media works. When a man or a woman gets fired, everybody dumps on him. So everybody will dump on Frank Reich today that he can't coach. He doesn't know what he's doing. I think he's a very good coach.
Starting point is 00:13:59 I think he's dealing with an impulsive owner. I think he got Carson Wentz to 27 touchdowns and seven picks. He didn't want to get rid of him. He was told he had to because he played like crap at Jacksonville, which the Colts are prone to do. I don't know why. They don't play well down there. And so the owner got in a mood, get him out of here, and they're stuck, trapped, figuring out bailing water. What do we do at quarterback? And so they brought in Matt Ryan, who does look a little washed, a little washed, right? We all kind of see it. I don't think Aaron is. I don't think Russell Wilson is. I think Matt is a little bit. And then here's what you're left with. I've been told this for years and years by coaches.
Starting point is 00:14:41 You know, in college football, you've got to deal with, you know, dorky boosters in the NCAA. In the NFL, a coach, you got to deal with owners. And they want their way, they get their way, or you get fired. And Frank Reich did. I'd hire them tomorrow if I had an opening. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. On Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.

Starting point is 00:15:46 my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw,

The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast, it's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing
Starting point is 00:16:22 something bigger. So, if you've ever supported me, or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Starting point is 00:16:50 Well, you can find out on the Look Back at It podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 was big to me not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
Starting point is 00:17:17 So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Starting point is 00:17:33 Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away,
Starting point is 00:17:55 such as the biology of taun tons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith Rule of Two. Listen to Stuff to Blow Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Well, it's good news, bad news Monday for Jason McIntyre. If the Seahawks finish with a winning record, he is going to put the Seahawk logo in the side of his head and they look really good. That's the bad news. The good news is the Jets were victorious yesterday and they're starting to kind of find a sustainable pattern to winning.
Starting point is 00:18:26 How sustainable. I still think they sometimes manage the game around Zach Wilson. But listen, let's talk Buffalo. I said last week on the show, this did not go away. over well, but I picked him as like the fourth best team in the league. And I said, you can't just be a fighter looking for knockouts. You have to have some nuance because you get to the playoffs and these games get close. Look at Cincinnati, by the way, when they couldn't run, and now that yesterday they could run. It's a totally different team. If Cincinnati can run like that the rest
Starting point is 00:18:53 of the year, not even Kansas City's beating them. You've got to be able to occasionally run the football. But the bills do nothing with nuance. And yesterday was a game that needed nuance. So they are so dependent on Josh Allen. And the Jets have excellent corners to shut down the big play. Well, Buffalo is so reliant on the big play. And then when they couldn't run, they're in third and eight. Well, if you're at third and eight against this Jets pass rush, good luck. The Jets have excellent corners.
Starting point is 00:19:25 Soss Gardner, maybe the best pure corner in the league. He's unbelievable. He is a Dion Richard Sherman level. close the game down on his side corner. And so when you take away the big play from Buffalo and make them run the ball and eat the clock and have a little nuance, they're limited. They're a limited team. We are four years in now with Buffalo, four or five, they still don't have a reliable running game.
Starting point is 00:19:52 In five of the eight games they've played, Josh Allen's been the leading rusher, including in both losses. You're not going to win Super Bowls like that. They've become the Dallas Mavericks with Luca Donchage. So, you know, the Mavericks, basically Luca and Josh Allen have to be Superman or the team doesn't win. So the Mabs are five and three and Luca is on pace to break like Wilk Chamberlain's records for scoring. And he'll probably win the MVP. And he could and should. And they're five and three.
Starting point is 00:20:21 And if he doesn't play well, they have no chance to win. And Josh Allen is six and two. He would be by early vote getter for MVP. And if he doesn't play great, they have no chance to win. That is not in the history of sports. Mahomes won a Super Bowl, but he had improvements there. He had a little pass rush. He had a little running game.
Starting point is 00:20:39 This is not just about knockouts. Nobody says Tyson's one of the great heavyweights of all time. You got to have a jab. You got to have some nuance. You have to win more than just on gigantic plays from an amazing quarterback in Josh Allen. And the Jets take the big plays away with Sauce Gardner on the corner. And since you can't run, it's third and seven. or second and 11, and you've got to throw on these kind of downs, you're dead.
Starting point is 00:21:07 That Jets pass rush is just a handful. And here's Josh Allen after. Yeah, I mean, it's tough to win in this league. You're playing a good team and your quarterback players like, I made some bad decisions tonight. Really cost our team. Lots to learn from, a lot to grow from. But that's not the standard we hold ourselves to.
Starting point is 00:21:28 That's not the ball that we play. Lots to look at, lots of learn from. Buffalo will be a Super Bowl favorite when Josh Allen can play poorly and they can win. New England won a lot of games where Tom Brady had multiple picks. You can think two things at the same time that you need a great quarterback and you need him to make big plays, but also simultaneously you can't be reliant on him always delivering big plays. Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the league, right? even Patrick, wildly coachable, brilliantly talented.
Starting point is 00:22:04 Patrick will have these four and five game stretches every year or two where he just goes into the weeds. He's off on his mechanics. He just feels a little out of the zone. And then Andy Reed kind of reels him back in. And the other thing is, if Kansas City can rebuild their own line in a year and they're receiving corn a year and their defense in a year, why can't Buffalo build a run game in four years?
Starting point is 00:22:26 This team is way too Josh Allen reliant. It's fun. If you have them on your fantasy team, congratulations. But that's not what wins Super Bowls. And when you have somebody as good as Josh Allen, I've said this before, it feels very Cam Newton and Big Ben. It's unbelievable to watch.
Starting point is 00:22:45 But you got to build stuff around them. You can't just need them to be Superman, put on a cape every Sunday. That will have limitations. The season's never been longer. the defensive players have never hit harder. The coaching has never been smarter. Buffalo is a great watch.
Starting point is 00:23:02 But the Jets showed you shut down their run. If you have great corners and can shut their run down, they don't have any nuance. They don't jab at all. Congratulations to the JETS Jets Jets J-MAC with the news. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. It's a good morning for Jets fans. But I will say this.
Starting point is 00:23:25 Now, I don't want to go overboard here on the Buffalo Bills, but Josh Allen was hit on the arm on one of the final plays of the game. And there is some speculation that there was an elbow injury that he suffered to a UCL, something on the elbow. So if you want to know why this might be something, the places I gamble online have not listed a line yet for Buffalo, Minnesota. They don't know the extent of the Josh Allen injury. He did talk about it after the game.
Starting point is 00:23:49 That's massive. It is massive. And also what's massive, I said it a minute ago. The Cincinnati Bengals appear to have found a little bit of a run game. So even without Jamar Chase yesterday, if Cincinnati can run the football, watch out because Buffalo can't. And Kansas City's run game is hit and miss. They don't have Joe Mixin.
Starting point is 00:24:13 When I'm watching Joe Mixin run yesterday, and I'm thinking, without Jamar Chase, they're dropping 40 like that. Nobody is stopping that offense in Cincinnati. If they can run the football. It opens everything up. And the other thing, what's great about Cincinnati is when you can run that ball, the linebackers have to suck in on play action. So it makes the quarterback that much more lethal.
Starting point is 00:24:35 If Josh Allen has to miss a game or two, this opens the AFC wide open. The number one seat is now open. Listen, I'm not saying the Jets are there, but the Chiefs. Listen, Miami Dolphins, that offense. I mean, the defense can't stop a noseblee, but the offense is pretty damn good. Anyways, all right, let's get to the first story. The big news this morning. the Colts have fired head coach Frank Reich and he was in his fifth season with the team overall record 40 33 and one tough start this year 3-5-1
Starting point is 00:25:01 Reich is now the second coach to be fired this year after Matt Ruhl who was dusted by the Panthers last month Colin I don't know how good of a job this is you've got the unstable owner you have no quarterback you currently have no offensive line despite playing quitting Nelson a ton of money it's a very good point jason I was thinking about that when it happened this is no longer I have an impulsive owner the O line's not what it was. They also have gone on about, and you could blame Chris Ballard, the GM for this. They always feel receiver light. They just don't have enough good receivers. I don't think it's a great job. I'd say this, I don't want to create openings that aren't there, but I've said it before. You know, we kind of roll our eyes at the Raiders situation and the Chargers historically.
Starting point is 00:25:42 Those are good jobs. I got weapons everywhere. And I just look at this right now and I'm like, I'm not sure Chris Ballard, if he got whacked and Frank Reich are going to be unemployed for a month, max, they'll get work. They're smart guys. RICO surfaced somewhere. But I just looked at the cap hits for next year for the Colts. You ready for this? Number one, Matt Ryan, $35 million cap hit next year. He's been benched by the owner. But they got trapped. They didn't want Matt Ryan. They had to go get a quarterback because the owner wanted to get rid of Carson Wens. The number two cap hit is Shaq Leonard, the linebacker. Darius Leonard, right? The guy changed his name. But he's not healthy a lot.
Starting point is 00:26:17 They paid a linebacker. Okay. The Bears, you just saw Iber Flues go from Indy to Chicago. He's like, let's get Roe Kwan Smith out of here. Paying a linebacker. Number three, DeForest Buckner, then Braden Smith, the right tackle. Colin, this Colts team is a mess. You know, you hope your boy Ballard. It goes well for him. Next up, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs,
Starting point is 00:26:35 late Sunday night football. Wow. Man, I had the Chiefs in Survivor. This was a sweat in the fourth quarter. I don't know what Patrick Mahomes is doing. I think he threw 68 passes last, some insane number like that. How about this?
Starting point is 00:26:45 Tennessee did not have, I believe, a second half first down and got the game to overtime. I looked at the first time. sounds this morning. I think I'm off memory. Kansas City at 29, Tennessee 9, and I went to overtime. Malik Willis completed five passes. Well, he's not there yet. But let's give Mike Vrable a big round of applause. Listen, this might be, I think I called him the next Mike Tomlin, right? As an underdog, you don't want to bet against him. I was on the Chiefs like an idiot. Vrable's a damn good coach. Oh, he's fantastic. Scheming up stuff. I mean, the Chiefs had, I think, nine points with like
Starting point is 00:27:19 five minutes left in the game or something. No, no. And I, this is one of these, I don't, I don't, don't blame Kansas City. If you play Tennessee, that's what it's going to look like. They are going to get into a wrestling match. That is not a knock on Kansas City. I watched that game and I'm like, remember early in the game that Tennessee had that? They threw the ball to the tight end. The tight end. Yeah, yeah. And he just ran over nine guys. And I thought, okay, this is what the game's going to be. They're going to bully Kansas City, eat the clock, slow it down. And Willis isn't ready to be a starter right. He's got some talent, though. But again, he's a-at-what? Well, he's a kid. He's a big, strong athlete. He can move.
Starting point is 00:27:52 Yeah, I don't. I mean, he was like playing TechMobile in the pocket. Just running around for his life. He's a kid from Liberty. If we're going to, I mean, I mean, seriously, he's a kid from Liberty. Can we take a deep breath and give me? He shouldn't even playing. I'm not crushing him, but I would agree with that.
Starting point is 00:28:06 He should not be playing right now. Listen, people are killing Zach Wilson for 16 starts. Malik Willis, I didn't see anything. Well, I did. I saw a big, strong athlete. There's a lot of big strong athletes. Well, I like my quarterbacks to have some juice. He's got juice.
Starting point is 00:28:20 So what are you said? You don't like Bryce Young? I don't know if we're going to talk. about Bryce Young and Alabama. Not now. But, all right, let's get to the final story. Saturday night, World Series champions were crowned. It's the Astros. Now, we could be a little more positive. I'm sorry for not being upbeat about the cheaters from Houston.
Starting point is 00:28:35 They won three straight. One game six at home, four to one. Dusty Baker, shout out to him. How's that? Dusty Baker, oldest manager to win a World Series at 73 years old. Former Dodger, former Giants manager. Dusty's been around. When I was a kid, Dusty Baker was playing. He's been around forever. He's a baseball guy that's been Baseball's been in his blood
Starting point is 00:28:55 forever, really quality guy. Good for him. But you know what? For all you seamheads out there, you baseball people. Can you make an argument? And I don't know, I'm just throwing it out there. Is this one of the deepest pitching staffs in the history of baseball? They go to the bullpen. They got seven starters.
Starting point is 00:29:10 They just keep throwing arms at you. I'm not equipped to break down the deepest bullpens in major the baseball. But I will gladly talk about that Alabama choke job against your boy, Brian Kelly Saturday, Oh, look at Cowherd with a rare fist pump. Love Brian Kelly. Hey, listen, people got to apologize to Brian Kelly. All he got was slander in the offseason.
Starting point is 00:29:28 Remember for that stupid accent thing he was doing? Brian Kelly can coach. And how about Notre Dame? Take it down Clemson. Well, you're opening the door. Listen, college football. Wild Saturday. It was crazy.
Starting point is 00:29:39 Except for Tennessee, which. What I tell you Friday? Yeah, you were right. Georgia. I don't know. I don't even know what to say. Hendon Hooker had no clue where the blitzes were coming from. Tennessee's offensive line,
Starting point is 00:29:51 No adjustments. And now we're way off schedule. Georgia is great. So if you ever get, you know, if anybody tells you, Georgia's going to lose a big SEC game, check yourself. Check yourself before you wreck yourself. Georgia, I thought they would win the game. And Tennessee's great.
Starting point is 00:30:07 The new flavor of the month, it's great. George has been rolling like this for five or six years in recruiting. They got tons of players. They're a young team because they lost so many guys to the NFL. They're like 10 guys go to the NFL. So Georgia's just trying to kind of find its footing here because they're, They're young. They are.
Starting point is 00:30:22 Michigan, to me, the two best teams I've seen in college football are Michigan and Georgia. That's it. So the big story, though, is with Clemson losing, Colin, this opens the door for a little bit of chaos because everybody thought they were going to run the table. Love it. I wonder if Michigan and Ohio State can sneak in if some chaos happens in the SEC. If Michigan, Ohio State play a wild game that goes to overtime, we would let SEC teams in. Why can't I let them?
Starting point is 00:30:45 I think Michigan is the best football team I've seen consistently. I think from the first second of the season to now, Michigan is the most consistent team I've seen, Georgia's second. I think George is more talented. But if we're voting on what I'm seeing, Michigan's the best college football team I've seen. And I did not rip up my USC futures ticket. They're not out of it, Colin. I know everybody wants to say Oregon's better. Oregon ain't better than USC folks.
Starting point is 00:31:08 But that's another topic for another day. Yeah, that's it. What a week. Listen, there's a lot of stuff happening. It's exciting. All right, J-Mac with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 00:31:21 The Heard Lye News. So Colin Wright, Colin wrong, top of next hour, a lot of stuff. Jimmy Johnson around the corner. I'm going to break early because I want to give Jimmy some time to talk here. I will tell you this. That Bears Dolphins game. Jimmy and I are going to talk about that. Sometimes in this league, I know fans don't want to hear this, some losses are okay.
Starting point is 00:31:43 That was the best loss by an NFL team this year, Chicago. because this whole season for Chicago is you're trying to discover what can Justin Fields do. So you go to the first six games, look at his numbers, and you go to the last three games with Justin Fields, and that's against Belichick, and that's against a very good Miami team. This whole year is exploration. It's not about, you're not winning a Super Bowl with this team. What can Justin Fields do? First six games, a lot of turnovers.
Starting point is 00:32:11 Last three games, it's like, how good would you feel today as a Bears fan? I'm watching that game. I'm like, you want to win that game. But remember, Miami is about a year ahead of Chicago in the rebuild. So they've got their great left tackle. They've got the second great receiver. Chicago is not there yet. And I was very critical of Chicago.
Starting point is 00:32:30 I picked him for dead last. I didn't like Matt Eber Bluce, a defensive coach. I think they got their quarterback. I think they got their coordinator. I think they got their head coach. What a day to be a Chicago bear football fan. And you lost. But you had to go walk to your car.
Starting point is 00:32:46 as you're driving home to the burbs in Chicago or wherever you're driving home to, you had to be sitting there thinking, I feel great about our future. You don't have to win every game in this league. When you get into these rebuild situations, there are these moments where all you're trying to figure out in Chicago is, can Justin Fields be the guy? I'm watching that thing yesterday and I'm like, he is running past fast linebackers. He's running over corners. That was a, that was the best watch of the day.
Starting point is 00:33:14 There weren't a lot of great watches yesterday. That was the best watch of the day. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, what's up, everybody? It's me, three-time Pro Bowl of LaVarrington, and I couldn't be more excited to announce a new podcast called Up on Game. What is Up on Game, you ask? Along with my fellow Pro Bowler, T.J. Hushman Zada and Super Bowl champion.
Starting point is 00:33:39 Yep, that's right. Plexico Burris. You can only name a show with that type of talent on it. Up On Game. We're going to be sharing our real-life experiences loaded with teachable moments. Listen to Up On Game with me, LaVar Arington, T.J. Hushmanzada, and Plexico Burris on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast from. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way,
Starting point is 00:34:16 Podcasts Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care which I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th.
Starting point is 00:34:41 You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes,
Starting point is 00:35:00 creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast. It's a space. For honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger.
Starting point is 00:35:21 So, if you've ever supported me, or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Listen to The Clifford Show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-taped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
Starting point is 00:35:44 I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:36:08 I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:27 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun. Thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of taun tons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two.
Starting point is 00:37:01 Listen to Stuff to Blow Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. He's a Hall of Famer, Multiple Super Bowls, National Championships. Fox Sports got a new book out called Swagger, Do Out Here, November, November, 15th. I've already been diving into it. It's fantastic. Great storyteller, Jimmy Johnson. So let's start with this. You know the dolphins very well. And, you know, listen, you got lucky. Aikman gave you everything. Size, arm, leadership, toughness. But a lot of times you get a Tua. He's not as big as you'd like. He doesn't have the big arm and you got to kind of work around him. I look at this Miami offense and I think and team and think I feel kind of like there's a ceiling.
Starting point is 00:37:49 But maybe I'm wrong, Jimmy. What do you see with the dolphins? Yesterday on Fox NFL Sunday, we were kind of doing a mid-season award. And I gave my award to Chris Greer, the general manager with the dolphins. He has surrounded two with all the tools that he needs. He brought in Armstead, you know, the left tackles. He brought in a couple of running back from the 49ers. He brought in Tyreek Hill.
Starting point is 00:38:17 You know, they have got a lot of weapons offensively. Now, defensively, they have struggled at times this year, but, you know, a year ago, they were pretty good on defense. Yeah. Yeah, I will say this, Jimmy, there's no teach in speed. They just, they beat guys down the field a lot. Now, let's talk Justin Fields. I see a little bit of Josh Allen where,
Starting point is 00:38:41 You know, this development process, Jimmy, year two, you don't see the field like you do year four. And sometimes he just takes off. But Jimmy, again, athletically, there's just not a lot of Justin Fields on the face of the earth, from what I can see. Yeah, if they can develop, you know, the offensive line a little better, you know, they're running the football pretty decent, but a lot of those numbers are Justin Fields running the football. Right. And he gets better as his accuracy throwing the football. They can be a weapon offensively.
Starting point is 00:39:16 They can be exciting because, like you say, he's got tremendous talent. Yeah. They're really a fun team to watch. So, you know, Jimmy, coaches have certain methods or models. Like Pete Carroll has always loved young teams. He's a motivator and a teacher. And I've had players tell me this. teams get older, you know, sometimes with Pete, you know, the stories and that relentless
Starting point is 00:39:42 energy, it doesn't always land the same. But at USC in college, young teams, he can motivate. I watched Seattle this weekend. I thought they were going to be terrible, Jimmy. I thought they were going to be awful. How surprised are you? I'm shocked. I'm not shocked about Pete Carroll because he's an outstanding coach. And like you say, he can motivate that football team. he can bring him together to where, you know, they're all working and getting better. As the year goes on, they've gotten better every single week. The surprise is Gino Smith. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:19 I mean, really, it was a perennial backup. And so a lot of people took a look at him and said, hey, he's not our guy. And Pete looked at him. And I heard this, you know, from Alonzo Highsmith, who was working with the Seahawks a year ago, he said that a lot of the players bought into Gino last year. He started three games. I think he might have won one or so. But the other players rallied around Gino a year ago.
Starting point is 00:40:47 And so Pete had a little bit of an inkling there that, hey, this guy might be better than what we thought. Yeah. Well, I mean, he was drafted high. He's a big, strong kid. You saw him yesterday take off a couple of times. He can move. Right. How concerned are you that Buffalo, this is a lot.
Starting point is 00:41:03 this is four years now. They don't have a run game. There's no nuance to this offense. It's big plays or nothing. Does that concern you? It concerns me a little bit, but they're a pretty good defensive team. So, you know, I think that the defense and Josh Allen
Starting point is 00:41:20 and those great wide receivers can probably carry them. Now, there's going to be times that, like you said earlier on, when the Jets, when those corners shut down those wide receivers, they're going to struggle a little bit offensively, but hopefully the defense can carry them. They're still one of the best teams in the league. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It is, you know, it's funny, too, with Josh Allen. He's so talented, Jimmy.
Starting point is 00:41:45 When you go back to your career that you don't want to get in the way of him, but you want to corral him a little. But I think sometimes with Josh Allen, I would just bake in some mistakes, right? I don't want to overcoach him. Yeah, you know, the problem with Buffalo is they depend so much. much on Josh Allen. And yesterday, he didn't have a good day. He made a couple of really poor decisions. And so that's going to be a problem when you rely that much on him, because the quarterback's not going to be great every single week. And yesterday was a day he wasn't great.
Starting point is 00:42:21 And so they had a problem with the Jets. Okay. So, you know, I've been pretty critical of Aaron Rogers through the years, but I would still contend he's great. He's an unbelievable talent. but I had said before the season, listen, you got kids coming from FCS schools in Reno, Nevada. If you don't commit to these guys before the season, this is going to be ugly in season. And so a lot of this stuff feels a little predictable to me, does it to you? Yeah, Colin, yeah, we always talk about chemistry, especially with a quarterback and his receivers. Well, that chemistry has got to be built. He knew he's going to have young receivers.
Starting point is 00:42:57 That chemistry's got to be built up in the all season. It's got to be built up in the OTAs. It's got to be built up prior to training camp. A lot of quarterbacks get their receivers and they fly them in and they work out during the summer. Well, that didn't happen with Aaron Rogers. And so now those receivers are struggling. There's no chemistry. And Aaron Rogers, I don't care how great he is.
Starting point is 00:43:22 If you don't have chemistry and you start pressing, it looked like to me Aaron Rogers was pressing yesterday. I've never seen him so upset. Well, I don't know if he was upset at the receivers or he's upset in himself. But he made three really poor throws. I mean, that wasn't on the receiver. That was on Aaron Rogers. He made some poor throws on those interceptions. But I think he's pressing because of the problems he has in the passing game.
Starting point is 00:43:49 By the way, Dallas now goes to Green Bay. So life's pretty good for Mike McCarthy. He heads up to Lambo with a lot with a healthy team and a lot of momentum. So that's going to be a handful for Aaron. So you know this as well as anybody, is that these billionaire owners, a lot of them look at their teams as toys, you know, right? And, you know, they bought their NFL team for 400 million. It's worth $6 billion. And they want to say.
Starting point is 00:44:16 And I look at Indianapolis now, and I always thought it was a rock, solid organization. But they fired Frank Wright this morning, Jimmy. And I got to tell you, like a Sean Payton's out there, I don't know if it's a great job right now. I don't know if it is. What do you make of what's happening? Well, I think it's a terrible job. I mean, you look at their cap numbers, you look at their players, they don't have a quarterback. You don't have anything to build on right now other than you're going to be a bad team.
Starting point is 00:44:45 So you're going to have some high draft picks. So there's not going to be a quick turnaround there at Indy. It's going to take them a few years. And if you've got an owner like Ursa that is going to be making some decisions, then you've got a bigger problem. Yeah. So I don't know about Ballard. I don't know how good he is.
Starting point is 00:45:06 Evidently, you know, they've made some bad, you know, moves personnel-wise. And so he made some mistakes there. So I think it's a bad job. Finally, you're one of the great college football coaches of all time, as you well know. And you know how much I love college football and you do too. So I've always been a huge fan of Brian Kelly. and sometimes Brian can be a little cringy, but my takeaway is it is hard to rebuild programs
Starting point is 00:45:33 and sometimes you've got to be a little bit of a butt, sometimes you've got to break some eggs, but I watched him beat Nick Sabin, and I felt when I watched that game, I thought that's why he left Notre Dame. He wanted to face Sabin with as many NFL bodies as Sabin. Do you know, Brian, what do you make of his quick ascension here at LSU? Yeah, I don't know him very well.
Starting point is 00:45:57 I've met him, but I think you're wrong on one part. It's not difficult to rebuild an LSU or an Alabama or a Georgia. Now, if you want to rebuild, now, rebuilding a Wichita State or an Iowa State, that's a tough one. But it's not hard to rebuild LSU. Look at those athletes. I was so happy for Brown. Oh, please. Look at all the players in the league in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:46:27 the Jamar Chase's, all the great players that came out of LSU. When you've got great talent, you're going to win a lot of games. And if you do a good job of coaching, you're going to beat the good teams. All right, Jimmy and the Fox NFL crew live from an Air Force base in Qatar on Sunday in honor of the Veterans Day. Veterans Day means a lot here at Fox. Jimmy, I know you love that show. We always appreciate you stopping by. The book behind him is Swagger.
Starting point is 00:46:53 It's available in about a week. What's the date today, Jamie? What is it like the 7th? November 7th. Okay, so we got a week from today. I'm diving into it. David Hyde, great writer. Can't wait for people to read it.
Starting point is 00:47:05 Jimmy, you know I love having you on. Okay, I had college football all day, Saturday, 12 hours, 12 hours of pro football. Now I'm going to go halfway around the world and entertain the troops. Jimmy, great seeing you. Okay, good talking to you, Colin. Okay, this just got what? I know what you're going to talk about. I was going to make sure you mentioned it.
Starting point is 00:47:28 it, the Colts situation. Do you have it? Yeah. Jim Mersey, Colin. So the Colts are naming, it's off the rails. Broadcaster Jeff Saturday is the interim head coach. Yes, they're pulling him out of the booth in Bristol, Connecticut, and he's going to be going to Indianapolis. This is real to be the interim coach. I love Jeff. Has he ever coached? Apparently he's coached a high school football team at some point, or he's done some high school. I'm trying to read up on this. This is staggering, Colin. They named a broadcaster the interim Are you sure the Colts didn't name the interim coach Jeff, and it will be named Saturday? And it's not Jeff Saturday.
Starting point is 00:48:06 It's next Saturday. Some guy named Jeff is getting it. I mean, it's speechless. You know, it's pretty clear. Look at the Collins face. I don't think I've seen you this stunned. Yeah, you know him pretty well, right? He's a great guy, great guy.
Starting point is 00:48:21 Smart guy. Surely. Jeff Saturday is the interim coach. You know, what if an NFL coach? fire somebody this week and names you the interim head coach. Colin, leave the herd. I've never, he's certainly, I mean, Jeff's really bright and is a great leader. Wow. Yeah. I don't, I'm going to have to gather myself. I don't know quite what to make of that. Yeah. Hour two, Colin Wright, Colin Wrong next.
Starting point is 00:48:53 Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite, unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends, me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
