It is a, what is it, Joy, Tuesday.

It's a Tuesday. Live in Los Angeles, it's the hurt. Wherever you may be, however you may be listening, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio FS1. I've said up before, I'll say it again. My favorite thing is when stories break five minutes before we go on the air. And we've just got to figure it out, and we're scurrying. It's fantastic. And Joy Taylor, you know what the story is, Joy?

Let me see. Is it the opposite of what Aaron came out and said was categorically false? Because I think some are going to predict it that. Yeah. When it comes to Vaxes and contracts, he's not the most straightforward guy. So here we go. The Packers and Aaron Rogers, and this was always sort of our hunch. I said from the beginning, I thought he would stay.

I didn't think he wanted to be a villain. Green Bay is a well-run organization. Four-year deal, $200 million. That's the story. A ton of it, $153 million. guaranteed, so that helps the cap, meaning he won't be a prodigious cap hit. He makes a bunch of money. So my first takeaway is, this is what I kept saying, that I thought.

I thought the other choices, I thought Tennessee, Pittsburgh, and Denver were very interesting options. But all of them had something I didn't like about them. Denver, good God. You've got to play Mahomes twice, Derek Carr twice, and Justin Herbert twice a year. Six games against three of the best quarterbacks. That's just every year. That'd be like being in the SEC and having Alabama twice a year. Can I get them a season with no Alabama occasionally?

I don't want to play them twice a year. So that part to me, I didn't like. Pittsburgh. I love Mike Tomlin. O-line's bad. And how many offensive coordinators have they whiffed on? They got another bad one. Tennessee.

Well, they are a mile deep into that Ryan Tanyhill contract. So even if Aaron came and Tanyhill was traded, you're stuck with Tanyhill's contract for two years. Even if you make the trade move to June or July or whatever the date is, you still have to, over two years, pay Aaron and Tannihill. So this was the one that made the most sense, even though I thought Pittsburgh, Denver, Tennessee were all interesting, solid options. But let's think about why Aaron stayed. Number one, and you know this, I know this. The NFC North is a mess. Chicago's in a rebuild.

Detroit's in a constant rebuild. Minnesota has regressed badly. The NFC now that Breeze, Sean Peyton, and Brady are gone. That thing is wide open. NFC is wide open outside of the Rams, who we think they're going to be good for the next several years. He also likes his head coach, and he's got an offensive head coach. That matters.

His coach is not only generationally of the same age. They like the same music. They like the same stuff. They can kind of connect. That matters. It matters. Vic Fangio's 70. Aaron Rogers is young.

That probably, you know, we know this to be true. Is that generationally, if you kind of like the same stuff, you get along with people, most of your friends are the same age, right? Or close. So we know, we know that old defensive coaches are not the trend in the NFL. Now, Nathaniel Hackett may have been good at Denver, but the point is a lot of things worked in Green Bay. It also lets Aaron, who's a little petty, say, yeah, Jordan Love Pick. That was a massive waste of a pick.

He kind of wins that. Green Bay drafts and develops very well. They always have. They've always had great offensive lines. This is a good organization. The grass is not always greener. It's not. A lot of people move, and it's never the same.

They move in my business. They move in your business. The grass is no is greener. The Packers have developed Super Bowl champions with Bart Starr, Brett Fav, and Aaron Rogers. It is viewed as a very good drafting and developing franchise. Yes, there's a hole in Green Bay. They don't attract free agents. If I was an NFL player, probably would not be my first choice.

And they don't have an owner, sometimes good, sometimes bad. But Tennessee had an issue. Ryan Tanniel's contract. Pittsburgh has one. They can't get the OC right. Denver had one. Brutal Division. And you don't know if Nathaniel Hackett can coach.

Nobody has any idea. we thought Big Vangio could coach. He could. Wrong side of the ball in 2022. So I look at this thing. You don't have to be best friends. I think what this proves is you don't have to be best friends and agree on everything to work. Brady Belichick did not have dinner in 20 years.

One time. Bradshaw and Chuck Knoll didn't see eye to eye. Aikman and Barry Switzer won a Super Bowl together. Not exactly bosom buddies. Bruce Ariens and Brady generationally. The way they view offense, totally different dudes, they want a Super Bowl together. You don't have to be best friends. Not everything has to be agreed upon.

We all know that. I mean, look at our politics. Everybody's like this and that. I'm an independent. Some social stuff, I'm a liberal. Some business stuff, I'm a conservative. You don't have to be all one thing. I don't have to agree with a candidate on every policy to vote for him for governor or senator.

I don't have to agree on everything. Do I think most of it works? most of Green Bay and Aaron works. The division's bad. The coach is young and offensive-minded. They draft offensive lines and develop them pretty well. He's got good weapons. Not as good.

Not as good as Tennessee. Not as good as Pittsburgh, in my opinion. Not as good as Denver, but they're good enough to be a number one seed. He's got a great fan base. He's got plenty of commercials in Green Bay. He'd make more if he quarterback for the Rams. LeBron's doubled his net worth in, you know, four years in Los Angeles. Joe Burrow would make, I was told by an agent,

Joe Burrow would make over 150 million more if he played for an L.A. team over a Cincinnati team over the course of his career. He's got to pick personality. He'd lean into it. But you know what? State Farm, IZod. Aaron's doing just fine. And the contract is massive. There is some dispute on how big the contract is. It does make him the highest paid in the NFL. Whatever. I don't care. The bottom line here is they gave him so much guaranteed money. It's not going to be a punitive cap hit. That's actually pretty good. I think more teams should do that. If I was the Seahawks, I would look at Ross. Wilson after this contract and say, hmm, I'd pay Russell money.

You know, Kyler Murray drives me nuts sometimes, but I'd probably pay him the money. Pay it guaranteed. Lower the cap hit. Maybe that's the new trend. Maybe this is the frontier now. Give these quarterbacks $150 million. Keep the cap hit really low. That seems to be the trend of the top 10 cap hits at quarterback last year.

The top 10, only one Patrick Malmes won a playoff game. So in the end, the grass is a. always greener. It's a well-run organization. It's a lousy division. He's got compatibility with a lot of the pieces. And I give Green Bay and Aaron Rogers credit. They've been thinking about this thing for a year. And Green Bay, the world is changing in the NFL. The best quarterback won every division in the NFL last year. I couldn't tell you the last time that happened. I mean, quarterback's always mattered. Now the best quarterback won every division. An offensive coach was in every

NFC playoff team. Every single one. Every NFC playoff team. Even the ones we don't know if we like, Nick Seriani got to the playoffs. What I worry about in the NFL is Mike Tomlin. Does he connect with offensive coordinators? Pete Carroll, feels outdated. Vic Fangio gone. Mike Zimmer. I don't think they're incompetent. The world is changing and I don't think they're embracing it.

It reminds me a college basketball years ago when the one and done about 10 years ago became a thing. And guys like Bobby Knight are like, I refuse. Bobby Knight, irrelevant since then. Coach Kay initially didn't want it. Just read his book. Then Coach Kay said, I'm losing to all these teams that are embracing the one and none. So Mike Shishowski said, I'm going to embrace the one and none. So the world is changing in football. Quarterbacks always been important. It's about 80% of it now. And Aaron's got a young offensive coach and a bad division. Schematically, they don't feel outdated. I don't know if Matt Lafleur is great, but he certainly competent. You don't know if Nathaniel Hackett's going to work in Denver. We have no idea.

I thought Vic Fangio had a chance to work. We got no idea. 75% of these young coordinators get the job and they're done in five years. So there you go. For the record, full disclosure, this is not necessarily great for me because I think the story would have been far more interesting elsewhere, but I still guessed he would stay in Green Bay. But it is great for the company I work for, Fox because man, oh man, there's a lot of great quarterbacks in the AFC and a lot of the great ones are retiring or moving in the NFC. So it's nice to have Aaron back for our business. Okay, so there you go. I don't even know. Should I even go to a second story or push it? I think I'll push it because I, Twitter yesterday was a bake sale of bad cookies.

It was terrible yesterday. It was an all. all-time dumb day on Twitter in regards to the Calvin Ridley story. He bet on some football games in the NFL and they suspended him for a year. And the opinions from respected sport media were pathetic. This is not a complicated story and we'll talk about that coming up. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.

Great to have you back. Some of you just like to argue. You like to agitate, not lubricate. Yesterday, a story came down, not very complicated. It was pretty an easy one to figure out, but, oh, God, the takes were just embarrassing.

The NFL suspended Atlanta Falcon wide receiver Calvin Ridley for next year because he bet on NFL games. As an NFL player, you can't bet on NFL games. Everybody knows that. It's a rule. Well, the hypocrisy. Everybody knows the rule. They have supposiums on it. They have symposiums on it.

They bring all the players in. Can't bet on NFL games. By the way, many of you may not know this. NFL players can bet on college basketball, NHL. They can be casual beters. They can't bet on NFL games. That's the end of the tweet right there. But, but, but, Colin, the owners can

invest in gambling businesses. Yeah, and players know that too. That's a, that's kind of understood. Yeah, owners can own a business that you and I can bet on, but not the players, who are told over and over, there's signs in locker rooms, there's a symposium, they can't do it. Colin, that is hypocrisy. Yes, yes, there is some in life that's hard to figure out. Like, for instance, marijuana is legal in California. but if you drive a school bus, you will be drug tested. What? I know Tad filling up his bong water this morning is struggling with that.

Just because marijuana is legal in California doesn't mean you can smoke it at all businesses. It's crazy, right, Tad? The owner of the Sacramento Kings years ago, the Maloof brothers, owned a casino in Vegas, had a sports book. So at a casino, you're allowed to be. bet in those. It was in Las Vegas. You're allowed to bet there. They had a sports book where people go bet

and yet the Maloof's couldn't bet on you know like Sacramento King Games. Tad the Bongwater is really now struggling. Here's a new rule in life. If the rules are clearly stated, no excuses.

Everybody knows professional athletes cannot bet on the games in which they play. And everybody knows that owners have different rules. You can cut players, their employees. You can trade players. They don't even get to use the same tax benefits that owners do.

I know I work at Fox. My bosses get stock options. I never have. Yeah. My bosses, forget the owners. My bosses have different rules. Roger Goodell is an employee. He can be fired tomorrow by the leak.

He has no right to fire any owner. Owners, this is why top employees in all businesses would ideally like a cut of the business. I own a couple of hamburger places. We give our managers a little cut ownership. We think they work harder. Not everybody does that. That's the ideal situation for an employee.

You work hard, you're a manager, you get a little cut of the profit sharing. But every single player knows. You cannot bet on an NFL game. in the NFL. Go back March madness. You can't do it. Now we can debate how long the suspension can be. That's a good argument.

Should it be a year or six months? You can certainly make the argument. You know, the NFL has kind of gone in on sports gambling. It's bad, but let's make it, you know, nine months, not a year. But the NFL also knew this would happen. They knew it would happen. This is why they have like the celebration rule kind of like, like they know they have to over-officiate it sometimes.

to make a statement, they're saying basically, oh yeah, I know it's one bet in 1,500 bucks. You're out for a year. They're sending a message. We knew what would happen. We know it's bad. We warned you, we're going to make this one hurt. They should not make this a light sentence. Calvin, feel bad for you, but this is not difficult.

You know the rules. They're stated everywhere. There's signage everywhere. There's symposiums annually. It's discussed regularly. You smoke cigarettes, folks. They cause cancer. There's a warning on the side of the box.

Caviot mTOR. You smoke them. You can't sue them. Not anymore. There's a warning. You know the rules. You know the rules. You can't bet on NFL games as a player.

And stop all this. Well, the owners, yes, the owners are allowed to be investors in a business where you and I can bet. Players can't. I know it freaks out. I know you're upset. I know you're really, really angry. But there's always been different rules for mom and dad. dad compared to the 12 year old, boss compared to the employee, owner compared to the boss.

As long as they're stated clearly with complete clarity, don't whine about it. Calvin Ridley did something that wasn't terribly smart. Let me ask you, if I'd have told you, if I'd have told you before that story came down, Hey, there's a story coming down that an NFL player bet on games. What would be your first thought? Oh, my God. Is it a quarterback? Oh, my God.

That's going to be brutal. Your first thought is, oh, that ain't good. So why are you arguing it's not that bad? It's bad. Don't do it. Go ask Pete Rose. It's not good. Just don't do that.

The NFLPA allows you, go put $20 in a college high. hockey game. Want to bet the Nashville Predators tomorrow night? You just knock yourself out. Calvin Ridley put his own name on his betting account. Joy with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line

news. Well, Russell Westbrook has gotten a lot of blame for the Lakers struggles this season. His performance was lacking once again last night. 17 points on 5 of 14 shooting in the 117, 110 loss to the spurs. And after the game, he talked about all the taunting

that he gets and how it's starting to affect his family. My family has reached a point to where it's really weighing on them. And it's very unfortunate just for me personally because this is just a game. This is just a game. This is not end all, be all. And when it comes to basketball, I don't mind the criticism of missing and making shots. But the moment it becomes where my name is getting shamed. it becomes a issue.

He's speaking specifically to being called Westbrook at games. That's been like 10 years now. He feels like it's shaming his legacy because his last name means something to his family and to his kids. And calling him Westbrook is, you know, making fun of that and shaming that. He also, you know, his wife talked about some of the criticism and harassment that they're getting on social media and death wishes. And overall, look, fans are going to express their frustration. And I think fans have a right to boo and cheer. I don't think they have a right to be disrespectful or harass people or send people death wishes.

No, first of all, I've said this before. I am not a Westbrook fan. I haven't been for years. He's been one of the two or three great athletes I've totally pushed back on. That said, if I went to a game, I would never taunt him. I just don't think that's cool for fans. I have no problem booing and yelling. Don't touch players.

But then it becomes, is it the opposing fans? at your own fans. Well, that makes it worse. You really can't tell opposing fans not to, not taunt players, but opposing fans are going to try and disrupt your game. Of course. That's what playing on the road is. So as far as his family goes, and he's saying he doesn't want to have them at home games and all that. And I totally respect that. This is a reflection of how toxic it has gotten with the Lakers and Russell Westbrook. And to me, overall, that's what's disappointing. But I think there is blame to go around in every situation. Yes. I don't think it's all on the front office. I don't think it's all on the brawn for bringing him in.

If you are defiance in your position while your play is not reflective of what you have been in your career, then that is how people are going to respond to. Think about three athletes in America today, Baker Mayfield, Ben Simmons, and Westbrook either are getting crap now or it's about to come for Simmons. Could I not argue in all of them, Baker Mayfield has agitated over-lubricated for years, and I've warned him about it. Westbrook was abrasive for seven, eight years in Oklahoma City with that media. Abrasive. Ben Simmons literally sat out a year for his contract. Nobody harasses Lamar Jackson. Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, Joe Burrow, Tom Brady. Like, I'm not blaming Baker, Westbrook. Let's just keep it on those two. I'm not blaming them solely. But one of the things I have been on for years with Baker, is, dude, you're not going to win this with the media. Like, stop it. Stop agitating every press

conference. Yeah, you're going to lose that one. You're going to lose it. You already lost. Now you're getting threats like the media has turned on you. And I think Baker does deep down realize it. When Russell was at the height of his powers, he was abrasive to people. Now he's not. No, he has been abrasive with the media this year. Well, yeah, this year he's good compared to Oklahoma City. It was a good. It was not like he has come in with, and again, I don't really subscribe to humble, but I do subscribe to self-awareness. And when it's become a monsoon of stories about how toxic it is and how hard it is, people want you benched. And like, at some point, there's a reason for it. It's not because you're crushing. If you were playing awesome and they

were winning, this would not be the situation. So as far as the family goes, totally respect that. And like, people who are sending death wishes, like, I mean, get a life. You're the worst kind of person. and the taunting and all of that. Away games, I can't speak for, away fans are going to do what they do. But as far as how toxic it's gotten, there's a lot of blame to go around. I just think if you're playing the way that you're playing,

you've got to reflect that accountability to the fans. And I think that that goes a long way. So the deadline to use the franchise tag is today at 4 p.m. Eastern. A handful of teams have already exercised it, and the Bucks could be next. Tampa and Y receiver Chris Godwin are, still working on a long-term deal, but they will reportedly tag him this afternoon if that deal can't be reached. Jesse Bates of the Bengals has been franchise tag. David and Joku of the Browns,

Orlando Brown with the Chiefs, tight-in Dalton Schultz with the Cowboys and Mike Gaseki of the Dolphins. He is a tight-in there. They've all been franchise ties ties. It's funny to watch people complain, not the athlete necessarily, but watch sometimes the fans in the media complain about the franchise tag. The players agreed to it because it makes you one of the highest paid players. Yes. Everybody says they want to long-term contract, but Godwin gets hurt a lot. And Mike Evans doesn't get hurt as much. So the reality is Larry Fitzgerald for years was never hurt. I'd give him a long-term deal. You don't always get the long-term deal if you're brittle. Like Anthony Davis signed a long-term

deal. It looks like a bad deal for the Lakers. Yeah. Like right? LeBron for a year signed one-year deals because he never got hurt. Now LeBron would rather have a long-term deal. So Chris Godwin, the players agreed to a franchise tag. I would rather put Chris Godwin on a franchise tag than a long-term deal. And I think he's excellent because I've, seen him miss too many games. So, you know, anybody complaining about this, players agree to this. You're part of a union. Players agreed to it. Teams have a right to franchise tag players who they like but are getting really expensive and they can be a little brittle. This is why they created it. You still get paid well. You get paid well. It's also a way to to kind of put things in a holding pattern while

you are working on long-term deals. Like we don't want to lose you. You need to get paid. We know you want to get paid and should be paid. So you're going to be the highest. paid until we work out a long-term deal. The Packers are reportedly expected to tag Devonte Adams following the Rogers news. So the Panthers have publicly stated they have no intentions right now of trading Christian McCaffrey, but they would take calls and listen to any offers on him. The GM reportedly has gotten more than one call about Christian McCaffrey and the Panthers are said to want a first round pick and another piece of compensation and any potential deal.

That feels a little steep to me for Christian McAfee. Caffrey? Oh, I deal him tomorrow. I like him. I would move him tomorrow. I mean, a first round pick and another player. No, no, no, no. I would give up a second round pick. Christian McCaffrey gets hurt a lot. I like him. That's what I'm saying. I mean, he's a tremendous player. Unbelievable. When he is healthy. But he's missed 23 games in his career all in the last two seasons. Centers and running backs don't get healthier. Right. If they've been brittle, it doesn't get better. He missed 13 in 2020 and 10 in 2021. And he's under contract with the team to the 2025 season. and he's the highest paid running back in the NFL's $16 million a year.

I know that's probably what they want for him, but that feels that feels steep for a player that is often not available. Yeah, that's what's out there. And not for like three or four games for like most of the season. Yeah, I also, now there isn't a, there's so many good wide receivers out there right now. There are so many, I mean, there's, I was just looking at a site yesterday, a rival site.

It's a recruiting site. Yeah. And I went to the state of California's next year. They're top 100 players. I swear to God, it's 50 receivers. There are so many great athletes in America, and many of them want to be quarterbacks and wide receivers, because that's where the money is.

There's not a ton of good running backs out there. And there's huge value in that. But there's a rule in the NFL that GMs know, never give a running back a second contract, especially if he's been dinged up. I love Christian, but he's been dinged up. So I'm not. I would argue way more than dinged up.

13 games and 10 games is a significant. He's missed 23 games. That's a lot. McCaffrey to me is a guy that if I'm a playoff team and I still have a rookie quarterback under contract. Like, by the way, I'll just throw Chicago out there. You're not paying Justin Beals anything. Like if I'm Chicago, I'm like, boy, he would be with Montgomery and him. Yes.

Like, as Chicago makes sense. He needs to go to a place where it's not the, the, The load, the significant amount of percentage of the load is not going to be on him. By the way, chargers. Yes. Like, I can bring him on. With a young quarterback. The problem is he's such an elite weapon.

He's just in his own category when he's healthy. But that is a significant amount of time to miss. So, I mean, I would make a trade for him if I'm Carolina, I would try and they're obviously going to try and get the best deal. At this point, you can't build around Christian. No, that's the problem. But I got a rookie on a rookie quarterback. deal, he's great. So now Cincinnati has Joe Mix and they don't need one and they have a plenty of weapons.

Yeah, I love Chicago for that. Chicago makes a lot of sense. Now, San Francisco, just the way their offense is, doesn't really need to pay for running backs. Shanahan manipulates the O line and they figure out a way to bed. But there's players out there and teams out there. By the way, I'll throw this out there. Miami with Tua. They've already got one running back. Miami with Tua. We give him nine, We give him 10 carries, four catches. He's not a workhorse, but we use him as a weapon. Absolutely. Both of those places would be great for him.

Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Heard Lye News. So breaking news, we'll say it again. Aaron Rogers is staying in Green Bay. It's four years and a ton of money, highest paid quarterback in the NFL.

He denied a week ago that it was $50 million a year. He also denied the VACs thing. Aaron's not always straight with us, but, you know, people in Green Bay don't care. They got the quarterback for four years. This was always our hunch that he would stay. The division's awful. Now that Brady and Breeze are out, the NFC is wide open. I think only Los Angeles looks like a guaranteed obstacle next year.

We don't know how good Trey Lance is in San Francisco. So this to me makes sense. I do think all of the options were credible. I think, you know, he built in the home in Nashville. They got a good front. a good coach. They got nice weapons. Tennessee made sense, but you'd have cap issues with Tannehill. Pittsburgh made a lot of sense, but Mike Tomlin, love him. Defensive coach has made too many mistakes on offensive coordinators, and I don't like their OC right now. Denver's a great

fit, but good God, is that division insane. Mahomes twice a year, Herbert twice a year, Derek Carr, twice a year. I mean, if Derek Carr's the off-speed pitch, no thanks. So to me, I wouldn't want six games against three of the top ten quarterbacks in the NFL. That's a lot to ask for Aaron Rogers. So it makes sense. I got no problem with it. I think it works. And listen, at Fox, we're happy. We lost Breeze and Brady. Those were TV draws. Aaron's a big TV draw. The Packers are a big TV draw. You know, the contract, and we'll kind of wait for specifics. Ian Rappaport's very good and almost always accurate. He's reporting. They're paying him $153 million guaranteed. And that would be great if you're the Packers because the cap hit would be smaller. And I think my knock on Green

Bay has been no owner is sort of weird. There are times, I mean, sometimes I think Washington would be better off without an owner. I mean, not all these owners are great. So that's not the be all end all. I do think there's some limitations to the market as a whole as a free agent destination. I've talked to dozens of players. If you like hunting and fishing, offensive linemen, great place to go. A lot of players are like, there's nothing to do there. I'm single. I'm 24. I got a lot of money. There's a totally legitimate complaint. There's a reason Los Angeles, OBJ and a lot of these guys, they'd rather take less money.

They want to stay out here. The weather's good. A lot of people, a lot of things to do. So it doesn't, it makes sense. Do I think they're a Super Bowl team right now? I don't. I think the league is changing. Weapons matter more than ever. And Aaron Rogers proved against San Francisco, he does not trust a second wide receiver for this

franchise. That's not my opinion. that's what happened in the game. He threw to Devante Adams or Aaron Jones. Both great. But you start looking at the Rams and the Buccaneers and the Chiefs, the last three Super Bowl teams. It is great tight ends, great receivers, a second, a third, a top back.

It is a weapons league. And Green Bay does not have enough ammo on the outside. Now, Devonte Adams is a big, strong kid that's mostly healthy. but ask yourself this today. And the Rams, as deep as they are and as good as they are, when OBJ got hurt in the Super Bowl, for a half, they were not the same team. Devante Adams twists an ankle, end of the year, you're not winning a playoff game.

I don't care what your buy situation is. I don't care how healthy you are. The league is changing. You need more weapons. And you've got to find a second and third receiver you can trust. So Green Bay does have a history of drafting well and developing well, so you keep your tabs on that. But that's the story today.

It's great to have you. And Aaron Rogers has signed with the Green Bay Packers. If you're just in, four years, a lot of money. Most of it guaranteed. The specifics will be kind of weeded out over the next few guys. Ian Rappaport's very good. He said the guarantees are $153 million. Aaron has said that's categorically false.

Pat McAfee, his friend said it's not true. I don't know. The bottom line is Aaron's back. They are going to pay them. This, I can assure you, a lot of it's guaranteed money. That allows for a less punitive cap hit, which is smart. And I've said this before. The grass is not always greener.

I think the Packers have won Super Bowls with Bart Starr, Farvin, Aaron Rogers. The division's won won won't. at best. I don't think it's a bad move at all. In fact, I think it's probably a smart move, and we've been predicting this. Peter King now joining us, NBCSports.com, Football Morning in America. What is your initial reaction to the Aaron relationship continuing on in Green Bay? You know, when I was at the Scouting Combine last week, Colin, I saw Matt LaFleur walk into a private room. I'm not so sure he was happy that I saw him with one of Aaron Rogers' representatives. So you're figuring, well, you know, they must be getting something done if they're meeting

here at the combine and they really want to try to get it done, you know, within a week or so. And so there were a lot of signs that pointed him staying, but I just never, I never thought it was over until Pat McAfee talked about it today. just because Aaron Rogers is a mysterious guy. Yeah. I think I have two reactions. The first, I tweeted today, that if Aaron Rogers plays to the end of his contract,

this contract in 2025, it'll mean that the Green Bay Packers will have had two quarterbacks in 34 years. So right now, let's say you're a 35-year-old man in O'Clair, Wisconsin, and you love the Packers. you will have never known until your 40th birthday, a non-all-time quarterback playing for your team. Yeah.

That just, that amazes me. Like, what's more impressive? The Steelers having three coaches in 53 years or the Packers having two quarterbacks in 34. I mean, you could argue either one, but I think that part is amazing. And then I think the second part of it, Colin is simple. If you're Aaron Rogers and you can make the same amount of money wherever you go because he probably could, and you want to take your best shot at winning a Super Bowl, then your best shot is in the NFC North with the Green Bay Packers in a quarterback-heaven weaker conference, clearly in the NFC. You don't have to jump over Mahomes, Burrow, Josh Allen, Justin Herbert.

You don't have to jump over all those guys to get to the Super Bowl. All you have to do is beat out and look. There's some very good teams and good quarterbacks in the NFC. But the depth right now at this point in history, I mean, you tell me, is there any question in your mind that today, as we sit here, that the lowest odds, the best odds of anyone to win home field next year in the NFL playoffs, Packers got to have the easy, you know, by far the best odds of anybody. So if that's the case, why wouldn't you go back to Green Bay?

He's rebuilt some bridges there. It makes a lot of sense. Let me shift to the Kyler-Murie stuff, which is interesting. You know, in poker, you've got to have a buy-in to be part of the table, right? That's understood. I look at the NFC West with Kyler Murray. With McVeigh and Shanahan, in my opinion, the two best offensive coaches, young offensive coaches in the NFL. Not talking to Andy Reid.

Now, so the two best offensive coaches, young offensive coaches, are the Rams coach and the Niners coach. So for Seattle and Arizona, the buy-in, the minimum buy-in is you've got to be special at quarterback. You have to be. Even with Kyler, he's only three and nine against Kyle and Sean, but many of those games are down to the final play games. He could easily be nine and three or six and six. But I look at Arizona and you may not like the drama. My takeaway is the cost of doing business against McVeigh and Shanahan

in an increasingly offensive league is you've got to have a star quarterback. Russell Wilson is 11 and 10 against McVeigh and Shanahan. That's with a bad defense. didn't have Russell. You're looking at 3 and 17. So to me, Arizona's got to pay him, don't they? I agree. I think what this is about more than anything else is Kyler Murray got beat up last year. He's a smaller quarterback. And on his contract, he is due $5.5 million this year. Now, the vast, vast, vast majority of non-oligarchs in this world would love to make $5.5 million. However, you know, in the market, as if you look at the quarterback market right now,

you see that that is one-eighth of what the best quarterbacks make. And again, we understand that rookie contracts don't. pay guys enough money, all that if you're really good. But all I know is this. When the Arizona Cardinals drafted Kyler Murray, they were a three-win team. This year, even with his horrible playoff game, they were an 11-win team. I'm not saying he's delivered everything that he's promised. Yeah. But you tell me right now, do you think Michael Bidwell or Steve Kime or Cliff Kingsbury want to take their chances playing with a different quarterback next year? No, they don't. But I don't think, especially with a pretty shaky offensive line, I don't think if I'm

Kyler Murray, I'm playing this year for $5.5 million. I'm just not. You know, the other thing, Peter, is for years and years, even when I was a kid, I can remember Spencer Hayward of the Sonic saying, I'm not going to play unless I get, you know, this, this, and this. The NBA's always been a players league. And we've always known that because you only have five starters on the floor and one or two stars can make the difference. But here's what's happening to the NFL. The best quarterback won every division. All the rules have been moved to help offense. Every NFC team had an offensive coach that made the playoffs. And my takeaway is the NFL quarterback, star quarterbacks, Peter, are starting to get

a little NBA star power, which is you're not winning divisions without a star quarterback, period. And the NFL owners for years have had leverage over their coaches, their players. and some of these quarterbacks now, Aaron and Kyler, Peter, they got a lot of leverage. Yeah. No question about it. And they're going to use it too. Yeah. Because the Arizona Cardinals know that, you know, it's not like they can trade Kyler and get five picks and go up and pick a quarterback.

Now, in time, they might be able to get a quarterback. But just remember, 2019, first round, Kyler Murray. 2018 first round Josh Rosen. Yeah. I mean, you know, you got to be a little bit realistic that you may not want to, you know, to bow to Eric Burkart and Kyler Murray. I get that. But in order to compete in your world, you better make peace with Kyler Murray. You better make it work.

You better figure out a way to guarantee him. Look, there's a way to do this contract. Okay. Keep your cap number really low this year and next and just have a bunch of guaranteed money in the deal. Yeah. And make it so that it's not a lifetime deal. Just make it for like the next four years so that he can make representative money this year rather than Tyler Huntley money. Yeah. No. Good stuff. and it's also benefiting the quarterbacks. So you can't win every negotiation. Arizona maybe doesn't win this negotiation. You face McVeigh and Shanahan for the next decade.
