What up? Welcome in. This is The Herd wherever you may be and however you may be making this part of your day. Thanks so much. I'm Doug Gottlie. In for Colin Cowherd on a Friday. You ain't got nothing to do. I got no job. You want to get fired your day off, right? You ever watch a sporting event and you're like, I'm tired as if I played in that sporting event? You ever do that? Like a really good, and we're getting ready for it. for football season, right? You were like, oh, you watch a, I remember watching last year Colorado State, Colorado. And I don't have a dog in the fight. Not in any way.

But the game was so good. It was so hard hitting. Obviously, Colorado State, you know, stepped over the line a little bit, a couple of their hits. But there was a lot of trash talk. Just an unbelievably fun and energetic football game. I remember turning it off and it was late at night. And I was like,

that was awesome but now I'm tired I didn't do anything other than sit on my couch yesterday and as I think most of you know I'm now the new head coach at Wisconsin Green Bay

so I'm in my office and I'm hosting my own show and the game is on and I'm watching and the game ends right about the time my show ends but I just and I went back and watched it again I was like

oh my I'm exhausted exhausted so pretty awesome game. There's not a basketball person I know. That wasn't a great game. No one, everyone says that was a great game. And I think there's a lot to ingest there.

There's a lot to discuss in terms of this game. We can get to Steph Curry and the threes. We can get to Serbia. but I think the most important thing that you have to understand. And Steve Kerr gets this, is that FBA is not the NBA and is not college. It is a different way of playing the sport that many of you grew up thinking you knew

how it was supposed to be played, how it was supposed to be officiating. Everything from how they call a charge, the basket interference rule, like most Americans think that there's no goaltending in Feebo hoops. That's not true. There is goaltending. The only place there's not is offensive goaltending. The ball's on the cylinder, you can knock it in or knock it out. Now, if it's a free throw and on the second free throw, you can knock it out defensively,

but if you tip a free throw and it goes in, they actually get two points, not one. So that's, again, by rule. But when you get caught up in, Jason Tatum not playing, when you get caught up in, why did they do certain things? understand that watching international basketball and looking it through the prism of the NBA is a mistake. It's much like when you watch an NBA or NFL game and you watch it through the prism of college football, college basketball. Tommy Frazier is one of the greatest college quarterbacks ever. He could not play in the NFL. And yet, you know, there will always be people that look at it or, you know, there's the Tebow thing work for a short period time.

Like, well, why doesn't it work in the pros? It's a different game. The hash marks are different. The skill level of everybody around you is different. Physicality is different. But the rules being different. The perfect example is in college football. You get around three to three and a half yards.

You can block downfield in an RPO. In the NFL, it's a yard to maybe a yard and a half max. That completely changes when you put that ball in the belly if you're running back and you pull. it out in terms of trying to read whether or not they're running the football or they're throwing the football. In Feeba, there are no three-second defensive rules. There's no defensive rules in terms of can you play zone, can you play man, or whatever. But there's also a different way in which the game is officiated. All kinds of bump and bang and grabbing holding. And then when a guy

drives, any sort of contact perceived or otherwise usually ends up being in a foul. The travel rules are evaluated differently and called differently, it's different. So when you ask yourself, okay, I understand there were four MVP's on the floor in winning time for Team USA. Why wasn't Jason Tatum? Why can't he even get a sniff?

And the reality is what Steve Kerr is doing is absolutely brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. They played nine guys and Derek White played seven minutes, I think, last night. It was really more of the eight guys, eight and a half. Because you just can't do it where you don't have, if you don't have the time with 40 minutes, the stoppages, they don't call nearly as many fouls, there's not nearly as many timeouts.

All those things don't work the same. Additionally, you have players who are taking on new roles playing less minutes. It's like Kevin Durant coming off the bench. He didn't come out the bench ever in his NBA life. He's coming out of the bench now. It's a different rhythm and you've got to leave them in longer. And I understand we look at this roster and you say to yourself, how can a roster made up of four NBA regular season MVP's? All the championship stuff as well.

How could you possibly, possibly not just beat the living tar out of everybody? But you're playing a sport in a different way. it's officiated in a different way. It's a different game. And betting, obviously, against Team USA in terms of the line. It seems like a really easy bet. But, like, we won by six, but we scored six points in less than four seconds. So it's not really indicative.

If you watch that game, we trailed the entire game. It took an incredible defensive effort, some incredible timely shot making. and even then he needed one of the one of the Serbian players to fall down on a defensive rebound and travel otherwise they have the ball

with a chance to take the lead late and it's fascinating like I listen to our network all the time I watch the other networks as well and how many people were critical of Joel Embed Colin was Colin said he's just wasting our time taking up minutes

shouldn't even be on this team. Am I correct? Like I do watch the same clips. I do listen to the same show. And again, I'm picking out Colin. It is his show, but he's not the only one. And my point on my show was this. Look, you have the only radio host

in the history of national sports radio, who's coached games internationally, whose coach games internationally, where you have 12, you're trying to get in, you can really only play nine or ten, and who's actually a coach right now, so understands the nuances. And oh, yeah, by the way,

the difference in American rules, NBA rules, and college rules. This is what you got. So what I'm telling you now, you can write down as law. We were not winning a gold medal. I could have told you this before last night. And I did.

I said this repeatedly. We're not winning without Embeddede. Mbid is there for a reason. The last time we played Serbia, even though we won handily in pool play, the game, the plus minus was zero with Nicola Yokic in the game. We needed somebody who had that type of body who could guard him man up, who could also go at him in the post to wear him down some and could score at his level.

And if he helped off, could make him pay. We did all those things. And so so many of you want to Steve Kerr to bail on his strategy of how he was using Embed and what do you know and the third time they play Serbia, we don't have a chance if Joel NBee doesn't play. Because in international competition,

you have to guard true centers. You have to have that immovable object inside. If you want to win a World Cup, if you want to win a European Cup, if you want to win a world title in the Olympics, you have to contend for the fact that you're going to have to play Fiba-style basketball and you're going to have to defend Nicola Yokic in the low post.

And unless you can do that, don't count yourself as a guaranteed winner. So I guess this is me hopping on the radio saying, I didn't have to say I told you so, but Steve Kircher did. I'm sure you all think it's super easy. You have NBA all-stars just roll it out. They played together. Did you notice that LeBron James didn't try and go one-on-one in the fourth quarter, that he was just facilitating?

And at the end of the game, when they needed a bucket, they gave the ball to Kevin Durant, who played okay until the fourth quarter. He got guys to buy into the roles that they're needed to to play. That's what coaching really, really, really is. And Kerr nailed it. And so many of you said,

get rid of Joel Embed, we don't win yesterday without him. Heck, Steph Curry wasn't particularly good until yesterday. And oh, yeah, by the way, now you play France, which is going to be a really hard game on the road, incredible hostile environment, talented team, and a team that has played FIFA basketball a lot more than us.

And the fact that you're going to have Joel Embed fully rested actually ends up being, excuse me, Jason Tatum being fully rested, actually ends up being a benefit to you. But you have to start with the premise that it's different than the NBA, completely different. So all the awards and accolades, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. Russell Westbrook is a.

terrible international player. He's been and I know now he's not, but he's been a multi-time MVP average a triple double, three consecutive years. You would think based upon those stats, he'd be great in field basketball. He'd be terrible.

He can't shoot. And as much as he seems like he plays great defense, he's bad on switches and in terms of communication and if you can't switch and garden in the post, you can't play. They've been hiding Steph Curry all tournament long and only yesterday were they modestly successful the defensive end.

And that was because, and that was because, that was really because of the time and the situation. So I'm not sitting here telling you that Steve Kerr is God incarnate, but he knows a whole hell of a lot more than all of us do. And especially, frankly, all of you do. unless you played or coached all-star level players, where you have 12 of them,

where you can realize 40-minute game, you can't play 12 guys. Nobody can get the rhythm. Nobody's happy. Nothing works. Whereas some guys have to play through it. Kevin Durant, for example, didn't play nearly as well in the first half.

So he plays Jason Tatum. Then you don't have Kevin Durant rocking, real, and ready to go and hit that game-winning shot. So to me, the takeaways are, don't win without Embed. Steph was finally waiting for a break-loose game, and that was the game that he ended up.

And I think a lot of it was because, and Beds in the game, so that means Yokic is in the game. And when Yokic is in the game, he doesn't come out and cover on screen actions, and that was one of the thing that freed up Steph Curry. And the nine-and-a-half-man rotation absolutely worked. I don't think they play as well in the fourth quarter if they play more guys in the first three-quarters.

We'll turn our attention to you. from international basketball competition with NBA players to the National Football League and a friend of the show,

who of course you can hear his podcast on Collins Volume Podcast Network, is none other than the one, the only, John Middukoff. And John McIntymecough joins us here in the herd. John, how much of the game, the basketball game did you watch yesterday? I'll be honest, I didn't know it was on until it was going. And then I looked and I saw the score and I just, I was like, I'm not even going to watch this in my office. So I ran out and watched the second half in the living room, but it was, it was riveting. I'm not going to lie. Wasn't that great?

That was awesome. It was awesome because, and I told this to people, like, look, I hope people fully understand. In no way am I truly comparing apples to apples coaching, like the Maccabi Games team in Israel to Team USA. But here's the similarities, okay? The only thing people give a crap about in the Maccabi games is the men's, men's, open basketball. That's the one I coach. And the only thing they really keep up, if you lose, it's a disaster. If you lose this disaster.

And so I can relate to, you have 12 guys, I can tell you the championship game, I got 10 in, I just couldn't find the ability to get the other two in. And then you get to like, there's like 30 seconds to go in the game. Like, do I shove them, shoehorn them in now, makes them feel like they're scrubbies or not really scrubbies? Like, that's really hard. But I also understand, and you have to have coached at that level before. the international game is a different brand of basketball.

A different brand of basketball. I was trying to explain to Maria. I was like, I think this could go down as like one of the biggest losses ever. She's like in basketball? I'm like, no, in sports. Yeah, but that's because we look at the four MVPs on Team USA and the other, you know, first team on. And we equate the fact that they're MVP's, okay, there's a bunch of stuff to it.

One, like where we fail as a country in terms of basketball players, none of those guys outside of Derek White have come off the bench in years, right? So these are rules they've never filled. They barely play international competition. It's a different style, different basketball, different everything. They don't play together a ton. And as you can see, like, this is what happens. There are people complaining even now about Jason Tam not playing.

Like, they won an amazing comeback. Why are you complaining? but that's how we that's how we treat kids you know and so of course how you're treated as a kid don't do once when you don't want to do a thousand times we think NBA players are the same

yeah I mean people are actually complaining about Jason Tatum right now is that still a thing yeah Jason McIntyre did we're going to have mine later on the show Jason Tatum's mom apparently took to social media there's some other I don't know but you know

they should have been to Durant They should have been Durant for him. I mean, I probably would have been the move. Yeah, that would have been moved. That would have been smart, especially considering Kevin Durant's the best closure we've probably ever had outside of Michael Jordan. Let's go to the NFL, shall we? What do you make of the Jalen Hertz beef with Nick Sirionni? I think the number one thing that stood out to me in that article is which we've been kind of hinting at for a while.

is Siriani's schematic acumen, which to me is pretty crazy in this modern day football for a young offensive guy, but he clearly, that's not him. I mean, he's really, what his skill set is, in theory, is like a Harbaugh brother, a Dan Campbell, like this crazy leader, which I think we all kind of question as well. Once you lose respect, you know, you've had bosses and coaches,

and there are some, no matter what, you're going to not always agree. But when you respect them, especially as you get older, it's like whatever, I totally understand. When you lose respect because you do not get it back. Do you think that they don't know what they're doing, Doug. It's not like you lose respect because you think more. I don't think. Yes, I think that's the, that's the, and I've had this with other coaches where they'll call me like a month or two months in the season. Like, this guy doesn't know anything, right?

We've all had that with your, you're at a dinner party and somebody. It starts talking about a topic to which they clearly don't know what they're talking about. And it doesn't matter what they say after that. When they act like they know what they're talking about and they say something that is categorically false, any human being, especially guys are like, yeah, he's full of it. I don't believe it where he says. Well, the thing about this, if you look at, let's just look at Andy, Kyle, and McVeigh, do you think Stafford, Purdy, or Mahomes, if they were kind of struggling,

who would the first person they would go to? He had to call Wink Martindale and even Wink's like, you know, I've been coaching 80 years. We've never had that happen, but it actually kind of makes sense because Jalen's lost, he's looking for help.

He's knowing they could help him. That's bizarre. So is it fixable? No, because you can't, it's not like he's a 22-year-old quality and control guys. They can learn stuff. I mean, this is a guy

who gets been coaching for a while. So how are they going to change that now all the sudden he knows play. I mean, basically what they acknowledge is we understand Nick knows nothing in a sense of like at the level in which you have to in the NFL. So we're going to bring in Kellyn Moore, who's just an intellect from Chris Peterson, his dad with a coach, who's a scheme guy, and he's going to handle it, and Nick's just going to be 100% the CEO, don't even get involved with Jaylin. That's pretty crazy to me. I would understand that the coach was like 65 years old,

but you're a young coach now they're talent on the team I still think they're going to be pretty solid but it's hard to not when you know what hits the fan and I keep this in the back of your head like

does Jaylen think they are coming from Sabin you know that's like Harvard level football like he kind of knows what it looks at Shane Seichen I don't know I don't know just this is Philly it could get weird

and it could get weird fast they lose big games. What about the Jalen part to it where I get it? Siriani may not know what he's talking about, but like Jalen has a bit of a rep going back to the college times as a guy who, how he purports himself being about the team and being this great leader, when the truth is he's about Jailin's about Jailen, right? That's what the Oklahoma guys thought.

Like he's talented, but by the end of the year they just, let's not have him do progressionaries. Let's just have him run it. And he wasn't beloved there, especially by the coaching staff. Do we call it any of Jaylen's kind of act into question considering he did call an opposing defensive coordinator in the season to ask for help?

Yeah, I think, you know, if you wanted to take Suryani side, like if you're his boy, it's like, this guy thinks he's like Russell Wilson Jr. Exactly who he is. Take over. So it's like, hey, we don't want to do that because it's not going to work, right? we had success when we used you as this hybrid player scrambled you around.

Like, we don't want you sitting in the pocket like you're Peyton Manning. It's weird. Like, all these guys are getting paid anyway. Well, I understand like, hey, I don't want to run every play. I think most coaches, I totally understand. But we're going to scramble you out. But they all want to play exactly like Peyton Manning. Like, Jayland's already got $200 million.

Like, just play whatever is going to work. That's what I, if you wanted to argue. the other side, which, listen, this isn't all on Siriani, the argument of, in the sense I'm not saying that he actually knows stuff, but that the success of

Jaylen was not playing like he played down the stretch last year, which was throwing piss, and turning the ball over. So there has to be a balance. And again, that's why they go to Kellyn Moore, who has kind of been around at all, spent a lot of time around a younger DAC, so maybe he can kind of

bridge the gap because I think Callan Moore's pretty bright, nose and stuff, and he's going to have to figure it out. But, like, Jalen isn't not culpable in any of this for sure. You mentioned Russell Wilson, not going to play.

And I just, I just, I'm getting, give me your thoughts on how the Pittsburgh quarterback situation plays out because I just, you had three different coaches say, I don't want Russell Wilson to be my quarterback anymore, right? Last three years. Three different coordinators, three different coaches. They're all like,

yeah, we're good. Okay. So now now he's going to play for a whole new coach. I don't, who wants him to run more? I don't, and then Justin Fields, like nobody in the league thought he was a starter at the end of last year. That's why nobody wanted to trade

for him to be a starter. So now we think Justin Fields is a start? Like, help, me understand what you think happens in Pittsburgh. Well, you know, I've tried to be glass-half-full on this, but if you wanted to take the stance of being glass-half-empty, what is a disaster? Like, would have Russell keeps trending down? They go to fields.

It turns out he actually, it wasn't all the coaches' fault in Chicago, and he's just kind of a run-around guy, and their quarterback position is just bad, because that is on the table. And that's why them sniffing around for Brandon I, you, and potentially trading their first round pick for them, is insanity. Because if that doesn't work out, and all of a sudden you're sniffing around quarterbacks next year

and you don't have any ammo, you're not in position to do that. And maybe their take was we get enough, we get with him with pickings, with our running backs, paramuth, our offensive linemen, they drafted some pretty sweet offensive linemen in this draft, and then we can just manage it to nine, ten, games with our defensive toughness. But I don't know, man.

I'm not a Russell Wilson guy. He's banged up. I'm just, I'm hopeful because I'm a sucker for talent, North or Smith, but usually guys like Justin Fields don't just all of a sudden become great, but it'll be interesting to watch them in the preseason, what their offense looks like. In theory, they should be able to run the ball a lot better with the offensive line and, you know, nausea playing for a contract. The little Warren guy is a good player.

So I think this thing could be a ticking time bomb. And again, not like a two-win team. But let's face it, like Tomlin's always hung his hat on worst-case scenario, we're 9-and-8 or we're 9-and-7. Well, what if it finally goes, because 7-10 in Pittsburgh would feel like a lot of teams winning three games, wouldn't it? Yes. And that, to me, eventually, like, they've been playing with fire the last couple years.

if they've had some injuries. Like you looked up last year, you know, Minka's on the sideline, TJ's been banged up. Like they're pretty dependent on, to me, on those two guys playing like, I would say, 30-plus games if they want to have a chance

Hey, Brandon Ayyuk, Kyle and those guys talking like it's past tense, yet he's still a member of the Niners. Tell me how this plays out. Yeah, to me it feels like at this point he's kind of stuck. Like, where's you going? Right? I think they lift a fire in,

because imagine if me and you ran the Browns, and the Niners have a pretty good idea, like he's never going to accept their contract. So they negotiated trade. And then who do you think leaked out that Amari Cooper was in the trade? The Browns wouldn't do that. The Niners did. Same thing with the Patriots are like, oh, Kendrick-Born, Matt Judon.

There's a leak in the players from the other teams knowing he's not going to go there. So I think the Niners have tried every tactic possible to be like, Brandon, you're stuck in this modern nice way. And at this point in time, like the Steelers have nothing to give because the first round pick is nothing for the 49ers right now. In the off season, that's a no-brainer move. But when week one, it's not that far away, it's stupid. And that's why I think that there's no traction on that deal.

It doesn't seem like any other teams in the league. Maybe Brandon I.U. This played his value a little bit because and Flash the position he's in. Like, bro, you're not a free agent, you know? You're technically under contract three more years in this sport, right? You got the 50-year option, then you've got two friends. franchise tax. We're actually doing you a favor by letting you kind of do this. But again, we have to

agree in the team that we would, yeah, we'll take Matt Judon, Kendrick Bourne, a third round pick. And then he's like, I'm never going there. So it's like, well, then you're not going anywhere. So let's just, here's our contract. Are you really going to pout about four years, $105 million, guaranteed? Like, are you going to pout on the dais if eventually you just kind of tap out and sign that? Because he'd be the five years. You'd be the five years. You're going to pout and he would be the first guy in league history to sign a $100 million contract. I'd argue in any sport and be angry because that's what it feels like right now. He knows he's stuck and he's just kind of playing this out because I know this.

The 49ers, like Kyle's not happy. He thinks this whole thing is kind of getting ridiculous. Okay. What about C.D. Lamb? Jerry said he's not in any sort of hurry. He's in the fifth year of his rookie deal. they can franchise tag him as well. Jerry obviously has the DAC deal to worry about as well,

as well as Michael Parsons. What happens with CD-Land? To me, that thing's a little different because like, C.D.Land's a much better player than IUCs. And, I mean, you just look at the last two years, he's got 107, 135 balls. And, you know, over 20 touchdowns. So it's like, you know you're going to pay them.

this kind of staring contest. Now, I understand maybe from their standpoint is he asking for like 2% more than Justin Jefferson. They are you saw this last year with Bosa. You know, Justin Jefferson, it was kind of an easy decision

for them. Once they got rid of cousins, they had a bunch of money to spend. The Cowboys are in a little bit more of predicament. But these contracts of 120, 130 guaranteed for a non-quarterback are just typically pretty tough, and there's a lot of back and forth, but eventually these teams sign it.

So I think you could argue you could do this last year with the diners. Like ultimately, you were hoping to get him for a little cheaper, but at the end of the day, Nick Bosa won, wouldn't you have been better off just giving them that contract on August 1st instead of September 1st? And that's the same thing with the Cowboys. Like, the number is going to be astronomical. Why not get him into camp right now and make sure he's in shape and ready to roll? So when you play the Cleveland Browns, he hasn't just had five.

Doug, good morning. How we doing? Great. It's great to be with you. We'll start where you guys left off with some NFL news here. The Jets are being cautious with Aaron Rogers as he returns from that torn Achilles. In fact, they're being so cautious that they held them out of practice due to wet field conditions. A little bit of rain over there on the East Coast.

Here's what head coach Robert Sala had to say about the decision. I just didn't want to expose him to it. If it was a game, if it was a practice, if it was clean outside, he would have practiced today. but call it over over protection, but it's just a decision on me. Now it's also interesting here. Sala went on to say that Rogers pushed back hard about holding him out of practice,

and this is just another instance where Rogers and Sala not on the same page. Obviously, we had the whole mini-camp situation, which they've moved past, but it was a little awkward the way that Sala said it was an unexcused absence, and then Rogers also saying it was news to him when he found out that he wasn't playing in the preseason at all,

basically at the podium one day when he was asked about Robert Sala saying he was leaning against him not playing in the preseason. So just a little bit of an awkward relationship dynamic between these two. I think there's a lot of awkward relationship dynamics with Aaron Rogers, right? He kind of is the king of the awkward relationships. But he can still throw a football really well. He's been through it all. There is a legit question out there into, is Robert Sala a good?

head coach. It's fair. They haven't had a quarterback, but there have been other coaching decisions that you question, and that's very much going to come to play this year. All right, and we will wrap it up here with a story out of the NBA, Jalen Brunson's contract extension with the Knicks was an estimated $113 million less than what he's eligible to sign for next off season, leaving many to wonder why he left so much money on the table. Well, here's Jalen Brunson at his press conference talking about that decision. I just knew that if I did this, it would give us

a lot of flexibility and to help us put us in a position to win. And I know that a lot of people don't agree with it. There's a lot of people who are thinking, like, it's not as smart from a personal standpoint, from an individual standpoint. But I just know that I'm comfortable here. This is home for me.

I mean, I think this is awesome. Honestly, Brunson knows that financial flexibility is the only way they'll potentially compete for a championship. And to be honest, also, like, if he continues to play at a high level, he's only 27. He's about to turn 28 in a couple weeks here. He's going to have another chance at another big extension in his early 30s if he's still doing what he does. No question. This is the thing we've been waiting for. for a long time in sports,

and LeBron James, I'll take $2 million less, is not what we're talking about. Like, this is a legit haircut. He's still going to make a ton of money. He'll make a ton of money in endorsements, and he's in New York City, but this gives him an actual chance to compete. Otherwise, you know, based upon the money he would have been making,

he would have had to be the number one player. As the number one player, I don't think you win a championship. And I think Jalen even knows that. It's a sacrifice of ego that we should champion. Just like we should champion the guys who don't play, very much in USA basketball. What have you done? The only thing that matters is if the team wins.

Do you know how there's stories out there that you're led to believe and you go like, yeah, I'm not buying it. I'm not buying it. And not one, I'm not saying things are not backed by factual data. I'm just talking about making kind of common sense, right? So here's common sense.

Justin Fields. Okay, Justin Fields was acquired by the Pittsburgh Steelers, right? And so if you, if you remember back, okay, they, the bears clearly were shopping him, wanted to trade him, had the number one overall pick. Okay. Had the number one over a pick. So the bear's got a sixth round pick that could turn into a fourth round pick. Now, I understand that when you take on a quarterback and one who may want a new contract,

well, now it gets super interesting, right? You know, it's like Brandon Ayyuk and his actual value. One of the reasons it's not as high as, you know, if it's just player for whatever, ever trade is because in addition to acquiring him, you have to give him a new contract. You have to give him a new contract. Look, Justin Fields, you got for a six-round pick, and here's the beauty to it. He's going into year four of his contract. He makes $1.6 million this year and $1.6 million in a roster bonus.

So for a backup quarterback who has started for two years, better part of three years in the NFL, as your backup, he's going to make $3.2 million. That's what the cap hit is. It's 1.2% of your overall salary. So then you look at Russell Wilson and his contract. Because you're like, well, Russell Wilson, he's not making it very much this year. You're right. Russell Wilson's also only making $1.2 million.

So dollar for dollar, it doesn't matter. the difference is that they signed Russell Wilson after he was released signed Russell Wilson after he was released he would not have signed there I don't believe unless he got a promise he's going to start and as much as plenty of coaches have you know last three coaches have said like you know on Russell Wilson

anymore Seattle let him go Denver first year disaster second year no matter what the numbers look like Sean Payton who knows quarterbacks would rather pay him the biggest walking number ever instead of having him as your quarterback. So three different coaches have said, I think Russell Wilson's best football is behind him. That said, no one in the NFL was willing to pony up to get Justin Fields as a starter. And you can be modestly successful, would be the guest for Pittsburgh, with great surrounding

talent, good running game, good offensive line, good wide receivers with a guy who could just get the ball there as opposed to Justin Fields. I just, I don't buy that there's a quarterback competition. Maybe should there be? Maybe. And organically, there probably will be because I just don't think Russell Wilson's any good anymore. But the idea that Justin Fields was going to play tonight is playing in some sort of audition, I don't buy it. I don't. The whole league has three years of tape on him and the whole league has determined he's more backup than he is starter.

and it's really hard to fix somebody's footwork, vision, accuracy. May's got the whole package as an athlete, and he's got plenty good enough arm, so it's all those other things. I just don't see it being fixed, and promises are a real thing. You don't get Russell Wilson at $1.2 million unless you promised him he would start, he's going to start.

He always, he hits up one of those three spots. There is the occasional you'll call Colin on his time off. And you're like, how's Rhode Island, Colorado, and Chicago? And he's like, no, I'm just at my place. I'm just at my place in L.A. I'm just having a day to myself. Like, ooh, that sounds lovely. Who has time for that?

but yes, I do get the sense that when Collins off, Collins off, don't call me, don't worry about it, I don't want to know about it. When J-Mack, when he's off, like, you want to call me, I'll pop on. So J-Mack wants to, we're going to debate the Jason Tatum thing because I saw on his, I saw, I didn't listen to his daily pod that he still can't believe Jason Tatum didn't get minutes. Like, I just, I can't believe this is still a thing to any human being.

I just can't. Like, did you watch the game? Understand all of the different backflips you have to do to make sure you get dudes in and find the right thing. And when you find the right thing, then you don't sub again. You just don't. You leave it.
