Thanks for making us part of your day. Really like where we're going today. There's a lot of stuff going on, J. Mack. J.J. Reddick, five minutes. after our show ended, got tabbed as the as the Lakers head coach. And it was, we had kind of predicted it Wednesday. We thought it landed Wednesday.

That's what we'd heard. There's a lot of different angles on this. If that's the tree, there's a lot of branches on this story. Okay, I'll take it. All right. Let's start with this, J.J. Reddick. Here are two very common traits, too, in highly successful people.

High IQ, highly competitive. Not a lot of failures. Smart people who are very driven and competitive succeed. Coach K at Duke has had a lot of smart people and a lot of competitive people come through that program for all those years. And at 77 years old today, he acknowledges JJ was as smart as any player he's ever had

and as competitive as any player he's had. Now, the only thing that gets in the way of really smart competitive people, men or women, the only trait that can get in the way of that is stubborn. And you see that just puncture really smart competitive people. I don't know, JJ, well enough to know, is he stubborn? But in the NBA, you have to be adaptable. It's a long, long season. There's injuries.

There's egos. You've got to be able to pivot. Keep players happy. But I'll be honest about this. He'll be a quick learner. I don't really worry about J.J. Reddick. I worry about the Lakers' impatience and competency. Just think about this.

The two best teams in the league, in my opinion, their favorite next year are the Celtics and Denver. Denver landed the Joker, the best player in the world, surrounded him with good players, and it still took an excellent coach Mike Malone. What was it, seven years? win a title with the best player in his prime, didn't have to trade for him and give up draft capital. They got him in the second round. It took him seven years with the Joker, best player

in the world in his prime. The Celtics landed two excellent players, maybe not as good as Joker, but Jalen Brown, Jason Tatum, excellent players. That excellent coach, Brad Stevens, who's now an excellent GM, Brad Stevens. It took them seven, eight years. They had to add pieces. So whether you land the best player in the world or two other elite players, we've had six champions in six years. The talent is all spread out. Gone are the Shaq Kobe years. The magic Kareem worthy years.

It's not like that anymore. Hard to get a third star. Now the good news for the Lakers, they have three nice pieces. Anthony Davis is a top 12 player. Defensively, he's a gem. LeBron's still very, very, very good. And a playmaker, he makes people around him best. matter. And Austin Reeves is a solid playmaker. If I had to move in my wood, but he's a solid

playmaker. They could also trade DeAngelo Russell if he opts in or if he ops out. They got 18 million bucks to play with. So there are far worse situations in the NBA to inherit that what JJ Redick is. But there's a lot of things to consider here. They don't have any shooters. JJ's a shooter. He wants a roster of shooters. That's his game. The other thing, like the Yankees or the Dallas Cowboys. Lakers are a big brand in a big city and the expectations are always a little unrealistic. And here's the other thing. Anthony Davis played 76 games. LeBron played 71. They're not going to play that many games next year. That's the healthiest AD and LeBron have been in years. And that got him a playing game and getting almost

swept by Denver. I played Denver well, but that that's what AD playing every night got you. That's what LeBron playing virtually every night got you. I'd bet my 401k that AD's not playing 76 games as a Laker next year. Okay. So that's stuff to think about. So the Lakers, to me, need a lot of patience here. This is not a championship roster. I'm going to propose a massive deal after the break, something to consider.

But I don't worry about J.J. Redick. Mike Shishowski's like, that's the smarter players ever had. And he had like Quinn Snyder and other guys, a lot of smart guys. Trajan Langdon was a smart guy. I mean, Shane Badiye, it's like Duke. It's like smartest guys in the world, right? Like some of the smartest basketball players ever, you know, Dukeies. And Coach K is like, yeah, that's the smartest player I've ever had.

As a competitive player I've ever had. So, ah, he'll be fine. I wish they would have made the move earlier so he could build a better staff. but you cross your fingers on that. There's this other issue to consider. Dan Wojke, L.A. Times. Remember, stuff gets out when somebody wants it out. According to his story, Reddick's assent

as a favorite in the coaching search came without LeBron James urging. They wanted to make sure that got out. In fact, they were more concerned about how AD felt about the move according to this story. who doesn't co-host a podcast with JJ Reddy. So you've got to balance that baby. That's something.

That is something. But again, in review, the JJ Redick piece, smart, competitive. As long as he's not stubborn, he'll be fine. Lakers, competency, patience, I haven't seen it in a decade. That's my concern. So I'm going to throw this out there. I am not proposing this. This is not my big trade proposal, but it's something that needs to be addressed.

Trey Young, and I've said before, I would have no problems. Trey Young with LeBron James, space the floor with LeBron and A.D. I'm for it. Trey Young sent out a tweet, an hourglass, a cryptic post after the J.J. Reddick News. So how do the Lakers get a Trey Young? Well, they could move D-Lo.

They could move some bench guys, James Vanderbilt. They could give up three first-round picks. probably have to give up Austin Reeves. I'd be here for it. I know, I know. I'd be here for it for Trey Young. I do think Trey Young would work here. It feels like something A.D. would like because Trey Young would space the floor.

It'd be harder to collapse. It's very easy now to collapse on Anthony Davis because the Lakers don't have anybody that can shoot a three. And Trey Young's an elite three ball, a true point guard, at least in 2024, he's a point guard. And he's a playmaker. So LeBron wouldn't have to be the overwhelming playmaker every time down the floor. Trey Young could do some of that.

LeBron could play off the ball occasionally conserve some energy. You couldn't just collapse on Anthony Davis so he would face the floor. So it's the sort of thing the Lakers do. Big, splashy trades, free agent signings, not working through the draft. They're not the Royals or the Pittsburgh Pirates. That's not what they do. They're not even OKC, a well-run team. loves to draft and develop, but I don't know if OKC has the guts to pull off a big trade.

Sam Presti likes to draft and develop and accumulate picks, and that's fine. So does Boston, but Boston had the guts to go out and get Porzinger and Drew Holiday and their champs. But I do think this works. He's a floor spacer. He is what they are not. In his prime, really quick, playmaker, and can shoot threes. I mean, this team is the Celtics number one in the NBA shooting threes. Lakers 28th.

I mean, he is exactly what the doctor ordered. Quick, twitchy, prime, threes, playmaker. And it should be noted. What was J.J. Reddick? He was a guard that shot threes. How do we know if J.J. Reddick can coach Biggs? He would never was a big. He's never coach Biggs.

But I know J.J. Reddick, if you listen to J.J. Reddick, this is a guy J.J. Reddick could work with. J.J. Reddick was a playmaker. He was a moving around the floor guy. He was a shooting threes guy. My guess is, quarterbacks, no quarterbacks, playmakers and shooters, no playmakers and shooters. He'd be good with Trey Young.

So I wouldn't propose this, but I'd be okay with it. I think there's a better deal out there. But I do think another thing to consider if you made the Trey Young deal, and I was at an event in the last six, seven months, where Trey Young was there, and LeBron made a point of showing

up. Just saying, I was at the event. LeBron didn't have to come. Tray Young was there, and LeBron made sure he got to the event. Just to shake hands, say hi. It would also, Trey Young would also create some momentum and inertia. Because when a new coach takes over, JJ Redick with no experience, if you gave him the same roster, people'd be picking him apart, picking him apart. Trey Young would take a lot of the attention away from us micro-managing, micro-inspecting JJ Reddick. We'd have all the eyes on Trey Young, LeBron, and AD.

We wouldn't worry as much about coaching. Because the Lakers didn't have any three-ball shooters in a three-ball league. All we did is talk about Dharvan Ham's rotations. You get Trey Young in. We're going to be talking about Trey Young, not the coach. So I think the Trey Young, him putting out an hourglass is saying, ah, it's a matter of time, I would be on board with that. Now, J. Mack is not a Trey Young fan, and he's a pretty shaky defensive player. But it should be noted, so is Luca.

And you all love Luca. There's a lot of guys in this league who are offensive players who are not great defensive players. Trey Young has gotten better as a defensive player, but he is a playmaker. He is a shooter. He's in his prime. And I'll tell you, he was in the biggest city in the south. He is a big city player. When he broke into this league, where did he play best?

New York City. Trey Young is not going to wither under the lights. He's a big city player. Atlanta's the big city in the south. Love playing in New York. He'd fit in Los Angeles. He would not shrink. So if that's the move, and Trey Young's giving you a cryptic tweet,

if that's the move, I think there's advantages to it. We pay a lot more attention to him. him than the rookie head coach. And good God, the Lakers need guys that can shoot. They need guys that, I mean, Rui Yachamor. I always say, oh, three ball. If that's your guy, you're not a championship team. A.D. LeBron and Trey Young, that's getting past the first round.

So, J. Mack, I am going to propose the trade I would make. And I'm not going to, I just think you have to strongly consider it. It's a summer Friday. Let's get off. to a nice start here. Colin, do you want to give up, like, the entire roster except for LeBron and AD for Trey Young? Because we just talked about this.

You can do what the Celtics did and get, like, really nice three, four, five guys. Or you can go for a third star, which is what the Suns did, and that flop badly. I think the NBA's turning. I would rather go try to find me a Derek White and Alex Caruso type guy,

find three of those to go with LeBron and AD as opposed to one. Derek White aren't out there. Fine. a slightly less 80% of Derek White. You're not a championship team with old LeBron, AD playing 64 games, Austin Reed,

Austin Reeves, and a poor man's Derek White. That is not a championship team. Don't forget Rui Hachimora. Yeah, that's not a champion. If you want to be a championship team on any night, AD protects the basket. LeBron, the playmaker, Trey Young dropping 34 from her perimeter. And guys,

that is a team that could compete on any night with any team. I mean, listen, this is Los Angeles. If you want to do, like, tweaking, that's, that's not L.A. Yeah, I know. I don't know if this solves, like, who's guarding Jamal Murray and crunch time?

It doesn't, adding Tray Young, it doesn't. You go up against the Celtics in the finals. Who's guarding Tatum and Brown? Okay. Like, you know, Trim Young doesn't solve that. Now, coming up next, I think something has to be considered. Buy Low, Sell High.

Reddick is a guard who was a great shooter. He loves the Celtics. If you listen to the podcast, Five and Out, that is the exact opposite of what the Lakers are. So for him to succeed, the Lakers have to make moves. This AD doesn't shoot threes anymore. They don't have any three-point shooters. This roster is not built for J.J. Reddick.

And there's a story that Jeannie Bus wanted to get Dan Hurley. You got J.J. Reddick. So give him a chance. Build him a team that can work. When Frank Vogel was the Lakers coach, they had all that size at AD, LeBron, you had KCP in the wing. There was length. Vogel was built for a big team. Like coaches Mike Dan Tony doesn't like Biggs.

J.J. Reddick's going to be great with guards and playmakers. So give him a chance. The Lakers, if LeBron's out, Austin Reeves can't be your guy. that he can be your second playmaker. He can't be the lead dog and win consistently as the West gets bigger. So Kendrick Perkins, broadcaster, other plays, said, I want to see how it goes with JJ Redick. If he's not thriving with Anthony Davis,

I wouldn't be surprised if Anthony Davis wants out of Los Angeles. So what if Anthony Davis doesn't want out of Los Angeles? Would the Lakers consider moving AD? There's a basic understanding on. Wall Street, buy low, sell high. Anthony Davis just had the healthiest year of his career. He's in his prime. The league is getting bigger. You could rebuild the roster moving him and fetch a ton. Hell, Rudy Gobert got five first round picks and rotational players, and AD is significantly better than Rudy Gobert. There is no proof J.J. Reddick wants a big man who has moved

away from three-point shooting. AD doesn't shoot him anymore, and when he does, he's awful. 27%. If you listen to JJ Reddick's podcast, it's a tell. He's telling you what he likes. Celtics, ball movement, everybody can shoot. This roster has no shooters.

It's got no shooters. And AD tried the three-ball thing, didn't like it, and was lousy at it. Move back toward the basket and had an unbelievable year. He's not going to play 76 games again. Again. And even when he did, it got him a playing game. This roster was built for Darwin Ham, and they fired him.

It is not built for JJ Reddick. And I think there's a trade partner. Just think about this. What is an organization with a ton of draft capital, a bunch of good young players, which the Lakers have nobody in their prime, except AD and it's a late prime, the Lakers need shooters, wing defenders. They don't, that's, they have a, and that's what the league is. The Lakers have a huge hole. Need shooters and now a coach who's going to be good at coaching them. They need wing defenders. Think about Oklahoma City.

Skinny Chet Holmgren. They don't have enough girth to face a Yokic. Or a Carl Anthony Townsendon, a Gober, or a Horford and a Porzenghis. They just don't have enough, they don't have enough girth. They're not good enough on the glass. They got plenty of wings, SGA. they need a big. They have a ton of draft picks.

They also have a surplus of good young players. And you're not winning championships with a bunch of good young players. You're not. Even the Celtics went and got Drew Holiday and Porzingas. And an older player, Derek White's older than you think. I think he's 29 years old. You're not winning with kids in this league. So is Oklahoma City going to brag to have all these draft picks and great 22-year-olds?

Or do you want to win? You're not beating Denver ball. Boston with a bunch of kids. You're not beating him with Chet Hongren. You're not. It's over. I don't know if Sam Presti has the guts, but I would think these are the key pieces. I think there's a perfect trade partner. To build a roster and give J.J. Reddick a chance.

Anthony Davis with Chet Hongren, with a Lou Dort, with an SGA, is immediately, along with Boston and Denver, a favorite to win the title. that is a great team meanwhile what are the lakers need 23 year old jalen williams average 19 a game his ceiling's probably closer to 25 to 26 he's 23

he can defend case and wallace tremendous young defender only 20 high ceiling take a while but lebron will get him up and running quickly four first round picks try to get most of them not this draft but next draft this is a lousy

draft try to get the next draft the money doesn't work with this you have to add a third team you got to make the money work lakers may have to take a bad contract probably with a big but this roster is not j jrudex roster you give him some three and d guys some wing guys some shooter guys lebron can hit a three just had one of his best if not his best three point shooting you may have to move in austin reeves but ad would fetch you what you haven't had forever young ascending players in their prime. I mean, come on. Kyle Kuzma, Lonzo, Ball, not as good as these guys potentially. So, and LeBron's at a point in his career where he's going to have to play with young guys,

because the franchise now is not LeBron. It can't singularly be LeBron. It was five years ago. It's not now. So to me, there's a trade partner. I don't know if Sam Presti just wants to draft and develop his way to respect. He's already done that. He's got no titles. He's been there once. At some point, even Boston and Brad Stevens said, we have Tatea and Brown, who are a better combination today than Chet Holmgood and SGA, and we got to go add two more pieces. Denver had Yolkich, Murray. They're like, we need Gordon. We need another elite player.

So to me, you can draft and develop and get patted on the back by all these fanboys on Twitter, or you can make a huge move at Oklahoma City and get for the next four years with AD, SGA, and Chet. You can give yourself a shot. because this young team and not as good as Denver. They're not as good as Boston. Chet Holmgren gets tweaked. You get no size. You're not

formidable enough front court. Just a thought. Just a thought. I mean, again, OKC's got a million draft picks. You only got so many roster spots. You only got so many roster spots. It's time to shrink the draft capital and all the young guys you love

and get a dog and go get a 75 game dominant defensive player with a great offensive player. Both SGA and Hongren are terrific offensive players. You need a big dog that doesn't want to shoot threes that's going to protect their rim. Or you can have a bunch of draft picks and kids. Draft picks and kids don't win in this league. They just don't win. And the Lakers, you'll say, well, the Lakers won't win. They're not going to win a championship here in the next two years.

You've got to give J.J. Reddick a fighting chance. with a roster built for what he does. Wings and shooters. And LeBron running the show for the next two to three years. There's my proposal. That's what I would do. Sam Presti might not even take the call. J-Mack with the news.

No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So I just posted your trade thing on my Instagram. I'm very curious how Lakers fans react. I'll say this. How does Anthony Davis, respond to being shipped to OKC. Clutch.

LeBron, Clutch is LeBron and AD. And all of a sudden, Clutch goes to AD, hey, we're sending you to Oklahoma City. How's he taking that? You guys always do that. You know what? KD was there for years, and if you ask KD, he liked it. Russell Westbrook said he liked it.

He didn't have a choice. He was drafted by there. You have to play it when you get the massive extension. You make OKC sound like it's Yemen. It's a middle of the country. It's a cool down town. not Yemen or Outer Mongolia, but it basically is Siberia. Oh, I know.

I think it's... These guys don't go out on the town anyway. They're, by the way, you're on a plane for half the season. The other half of the season, you're sleeping, practicing, and playing. These guys aren't out on the town. It's in the middle and in the off season, you go have your Malibu place. I don't care where I play. I want to play with a winner.

The Lakers were in the conference finals two years ago. Dude, the West is packed and everybody's young and getting better. years ago, might as well be eight years ago. The Warriors three years ago on a title. They're a mile away. Did you cover the LeBron reaction when he gets draft picks, aka young guys?

LeBron, according to his story, had no say in the coach. This is about J.J. Reddick. If you want to give J.J. Reddick a shot, this roster is the opposite of what he... He wants shooters. They have no wing defenders. Boston

is exactly what he wants. eight guys that can ball handle, shoot, and defend. Lakers have like two. Don't you think Polinka can reshape the roster this offseason? You don't have any faith? The Lakers, I don't. You only have one great trade piece. LeBron's not a great trade piece at 39.

You have one great trade piece who just had his healthiest year, and in the last eight, he's had one really healthy year. It was just the one you had. You're going to bet he's going to play 76 games again? Yeah, I'm 72. You're laughing as you said. Well, listen, headlines at the end of the show is going to be spicy because you're not going to like my rhetoric reaction. All right.

Let's get to the NFL. Trevor Lawrence signed the biggest contract in Jaguars history, making him the highest paid quarterback in the NFL. His deal also includes the third most guaranteed money in league history. Lawrence is not feeling any pressure despite the big money. Quarterback in this league is pressure anyway. So, yeah, I guess on the outside, there's going to be a bigger expectation, you know, with the long, term deal and being the franchise quarterback and, you know, having the contract to, I guess, say that. It might change how other people look at it. But for me, I think I've had that,

I've kind of carried that responsibility anyways, but it does feel good to have it done. That was a goal that, you know, team and myself and my team wanted to get done is to have it, you know, finished by the time training camp came around so we could just, you know, put everything towards this year and getting ready to go bring a championship here. They'll be fun. Bring a championship here. Well, yeah, this is really a lot of you. Are they in your Super Bowl bubble? Yeah, they are actually.

The Jags? Yeah. And the Jets are not? No, yesterday I showed you my bubble. Remember I showed you the 12 team? Oh, that's right with the contract. Yeah, they're both in the mix. Yeah. There's 12 teams that have a shot based on how contracts work with quarterbacks in the league.

Jets and the Jags are both lower end, but they're in there. So Trevor Lawrence, last three seasons, if you had to guess turnovers last three seasons. A lot of them. Yeah, a lot of them. 60. Yeah, a lot of them. Most in the NFL. Yeah. One's had battle lines.

Oh, that's what I'm bleeding. It couldn't possibly be Trevor Lawrence. Unlike the Jets, actually, he plays, though. That's good. Unnecessary jab at my jets. All right, fine. Let's move on to the next topic. Now, this one, this is going to irk you.

So Jordan Love is next man up to get paid. Tu, Tua, as well. But Jordan Love is a more interesting one right now. Adam Schaefter of the other network believes Trevor Lawrence's $55 million average annual value will be the floor, the floor for Jordan Love's new deal saying, I don't believe Jordan Love is taking less than Trevor Lawrence. Now, you and I have sparred over this, Jordan Love.

I think he's basically had like a good eight game stretch. Yeah, we would prefer, we would prefer they sign this deal in late October. Would be ideal for me. I'd love to see eight more. But the good thing the Packers have going for them, they draft exceedingly well, and they have a stop. of receiver, O-line, and tight-end talent that they don't have to pay for a long time, especially wide receiver and tight-end talent.

So they've got a stockpile for about three years. They don't have to be any of these guys. And they have hit on almost every tight-end and wide-receiver draft pick. So, you know, they want to lock this up. I tend to trust the Packers. They've been so good at this position and so good offensively. I just trust them. They're seeing practice video.

I'm not. you know, I mean, they, we just saw the games. So sometimes somebody just earns my trust. The Packers and offense and quarterbacks, if they think it's right, I trust him. So Jordan Love will chew up only 5% of the salary cap this year because he's on a really low number. Colin, if that spikes next year to, I don't know, 55 as his average. Well, then he eats up 16%? 16 to 20.

And then you're not. And then you're kidding, encroaching Dak Prescott territory. Okay, but the difference is, the count. Cowboys don't have six receivers they like. Okay. Or two receiver, two tight ends as good as the one the Packers have. So the problem with Dallas is they haven't hit on as many offensive draft picks. The Packers have hit on all of them.

Every one of those draft picks at wide receiver, all of them can play. They went and got two tight ends last year. Both are excellent. So they've hit on every offensive draft pick, including Jordan Love. So if you see Love is making, let's just say, 56 million a year. I'm okay with it. I would love to see eight more starts, but I think he's going to be fine. I think what I saw last year, and it was capped off by the Dallas performance,

where he was significantly more nimble, twitchy with a better arm than DAC on the road in his first playoff game. I was like, all right, I've seen enough. I remember when I saw Jared Goff go toe to toe with Mahomes. It was a Monday night football game, supposed to be scheduled for Mexico. And at that time, we liked Jared Gott. That's all I needed to see from Jared Goff. I was like, no, no, no, no.

American Idol, nine seconds in, you can tell who can sing. You can see talent. CJ Stroud, second game, that's a franchise quarterback. Joe Burrell, third game, that's a franchise. It doesn't take long to see talent. Jalen Hertz Super Bowl? Jalen Hertz is really talented. Now, he's better with Stike and then without him,

but he's obviously mega talented. That's not debatable. I just, it feels like, and again, I like love. I don't love him. That sounds silly. But at any rate, eight games, Colin. He had a good eight game stretch.

That's it. Jalen Hertz got paid off an entire season where he was nearly the MVP. Okay, let's think about this. I can't think of another quarterback. Tim Thibault had a great seven-game stretch. But if you were reasonable and honest. There was no good stats there. That's right.

So it's not the winning streak. It was eight games. He was in shootouts. He was productive. He didn't throw interceptions. He made good decision. Eight games at his last. level, C.J. Stroud last year

at eight games. Tim Tebow had seven. I didn't buy any of it. So it's Daniel Jones made the playoffs. I didn't buy any of them. Right. So it's not just about the number. It does not take that. I've never bought into Tua as a guy I'd pay $55 million and he's been to the playoffs. You have to contextualize

all of it. My eyes and the Packers history at quarterbacks tell me he's worth mid-50s. Between trusting that franchise and my eyes was I shocked that he got that good? Yes. But it was a absolutely legitimate eight-game stretch. He was in all sorts of games. He had good weather. He had bad weather.

He had home. He had road. He was great in all of them for eight weeks. So if he's getting 55, my gosh, Brock Purdy's going to break the bank next summer. No, he's not. He's not as good as Brockertie. He's not as close to us athletic. He's not as big. He didn't have that arm. He's not close to Jordan Love in terms of talent. Not close. Cognitively, Brock makes really good decisions. Who's the bigger athlete, the twitchier athlete, the better arm athlete, who moves better?

Jordan love. All Jordan love. All Jordan love. All. Donald. Final story is to the NBA where Paul George will be the biggest name available in free agency. Clippers, they so far have not wanted to pay him more than Kauai. The 76ers have been linked to Paul George, but according to Shams Sharania, NBA reporter, Philly's interest in Paul George has significantly waned in recent days. Now, remember yesterday we talked about Paul George went on a podcast and made some comments. and I'm just trying to figure out why all of a sudden Philly is lukewarm on Paul George.

Well, did Dary see something in the finals and is like, no. Paul George may be lukewarm on the clippers and they don't want to look like publicly they took a swing and got the facial. So my take is they have reached out to Paul George. Paul George has said not really that interested. They want to protect the franchise. They don't want to look like they took a big swing and he said no, thanks. So they are going to frame it as if they're not interested, but the truth is they probably reached out and Paul wasn't interested.

And could just be a leverage play as well. Hey, hey, I know the Clippers aren't offering you to Max. We're not either. Sorry, it's not coming. Like, are the 76ers also they probably are trying to dodge any Joel and B tampering nonsense? Remember the finals Joel and B's like, Paul George.

Hey, we can use this guy, you know? I don't know. It just feels like this is a leverage season, if you will, where the teams and the players, Trey Young puts out that tweet, like an hourglass. Now we got the set. All of a sudden, the Sixers interest waning in Paul George. Something seems fishy there, no?

No. It's trying to protect the enterprise. This is what companies do. We weren't that interested. Right? That's what big companies do. This company's probably done it. The one I used to work at.

We weren't that interested anyway. When you reach out and the person says, now I'm going to pass. That's just part of the games. It's, it's, I get it. I love Paul George, but, you know, he wants to stay in L.A. He chose L.A. He's been to the Midwest.

He didn't like it. He doesn't want to go to the East. It does feel a little odd if Paul George was like, I can't wait to get back to the East Coast. It doesn't. No. J. Mack with the News. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.

So a couple of things here. I'm reading Bill Plashke's a very popular, long-time columnist in Los Angeles for the Times. His headline in foolishly hiring JJ Reddick, the Lakers continued down the road. nowhere.

So not everybody loves the move. Let me give you a comp. And somebody I know had over to the house for dinner before and a really, really good guy, really smart guy. Aaron Boone, manager of the Yankees. So Aaron Boone took over a big

brand. The Yankees. JJ Reddick taking over a big brand the Lakers. Big City Media, New York, L.A. Both inherited good teams. The Lakers are good, not great. Yankees made the playoffs, a good team. Both had one big star in their prime. Aaron Judge was young but was already a monster and AD.

Both franchises are owned by children of a legendary father, Jerry Buss and George Steinbrenner. Aaron Boone was just broadcasting, radio and television. JJ Reddick was just broadcasting, television and podcasting. I know Aaron really smart, but he had no experience. I don't know JJ. I'm told he's smart with no experience. Both JJ Reddick and Aaron Boone were very similar players. Intense grinders from athletic families who hung it up both at 36 years old.

They were overachievers, maybe a bit athletically, good but not stars. And Aaron Boone with the Yankees microscope was learning on the job. First couple of years, he got some pushback on how. he handled pitchers. But the three things that Aaron Boone did and why he's still now managing, he had a really good relationship with Brian Cashman. J.J. Reddick needs to have a very good relationship with Rob Polinka. Aaron Boone, unlike a lot of old baseball people, was not stubborn with analytics.

He bought into him. Aaron tends to just like information. That's one thing I can say for certain. Aaron likes new information. That's who he is. He wants new stuff. He's not a stubborn guy. J.J. Reddick's an analytic guy.

He loves the way the Celtics play basketball. And the other thing, Aaron Boone's likable and got total buy-in from guys like Aaron Judge very early. And J.J. Redick, we know LeBron likes him. So I can see J.J. Reddick doing all those things. And I know they're different sports, but you've got to buy into the analytics and don't be stubborn. Got to have a good relationship with a general manager. and you need buy-in from your star because both baseball and the NBA

mow through coaches. And Aaron Boone, because Cashman and the Yankees were patient, has got a great baseball team. Not a perfect baseball team. Probably not athletic enough in some spots defensively, but a very good baseball team. Capable of winning it all.

And the Lakers aren't. But Aaron's team wasn't initially maybe not that, not quite that champion. leadership level either. Had to make some moves. So my feeling is we can bury JJ Reddick, but smart guys who are highly competitive, and that's JJ Reddick and Aaron Boone, they have a very quick learning curve. I've been saying this for years in my business.

Hire smart. You can teach them radio. I can teach people television. I can't make you smarter. Aaron Boone's smart, it's worked. And JJ Redick's smart, competitive. I think it could work. Let me, let's talk about expectations for the Lakers, though.

And that's not something this organization can come to grips with. So as I said earlier, this roster has almost no three-point shooters. Celtics led the league, Lakers 28. They don't take a lot of them, and they don't make a lot of them. J.J. Reddick, that was his specialty. That's what we know he can coach. So this roster's not built for him. I think they have to make a big swing, be it to Tray Young or move Anthony Davis.

I think they have to make a big swing, get younger, get more athletic on the wing, and get more shooters. I mean, AD was the healthiest he has been in forever, and he's not going to play 76 games next year. The West is loaded, it's young, it's ascending, this is not a championship team. So what are realistic expectations? So let's just look at this. Last year, they won 47 games with... LeBron and AD playing over 70. And the West was good, but still really young.

And that got him eighth best in the West. With this roster, getting older as the West gets better, a coach with no experience, 41 and 41, 500 to me, is a win. That's realistic. If AD plays 69 games, maybe 66, if LeBron plays 67 games, there's no way AD is playing 76 again. So to me, the Lakers are in no man's land. They're not great and they're not terrible.

It's the worst place to be in the NBA, at least when you're terrible, you get draft picks. You get in the lottery. The Lakers are in no man's land. For years, Portland with Dame and in that group, they were in no man's land. They weren't great. They weren't terrible. What did they get out of it? One nice Western conference trip.

That's what the Lakers just got out of it a couple years ago. They're in no man's land. The Lakers have to pick a direction. Do you want to get bad or do you want to get great? And they don't have the patience for a total rebuild. So to me, from middle to great, there's one way to do it. Get Tray Young or Trade A.D. Both work for what J.J. Reddick's capable of coaching at this point.

shooters, wing players, three and D guys, that's what I know he can do. I have no proof that he can coach big guys, AD. I have no proof of that. AD is a hot and cold offensive player, more of a defensive guy. So to me, Trey Young or move AD, rebuild it, five-year window, draft picks, youth, shooters, wing defenders, all the Lakers need all of that stuff. this roster in the ascending west, you are in no man's land with this. Because I'll say it again, you're not getting 76 games from AD, and you're not getting 71 from LeBron.

You're not. But I don't buy, I watched Aaron Boone in that hot, you know, stove, you put your hand on that Yankee stove, it'll get burnt. They are all, you have 20 riders around the cage every day. That's the biggest story in New York. during the, you know, October football season. You know, it's the Yankees are a big story. Aaron Boone navigated it. They'll little pushback on pitching moves early, but people like Aaron Boone.

GM liked him, bought into analytics, clubhouse likes him. I think JJ Reddick can work with a big swing to Trey Young or AD moving. Then it can work. You know, when you hire these young coaches, in football, if you hire Jim Harbaugh, you allow Jim Harbaugh to build the roster he wants. That's understood. When you hire a new football coach, GMs allow the coach to build a roster he wants.

In basketball, why aren't you going to do that? I mean, you're paying somebody $40 million for five years. You're going to stick them with a Darwin ham roster? Defense, length, big, that's not what he's going to do. So if football does a really good job, you know, in college, you can recruit 25, 30 players, every year. But in the NFL, look at the new coaches. You know, D'emico Ryan's a defensive guy. They're letting him dictate a lot of their personnel moves. And I think that's the way to do it in
