This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
On the Look Back at it podcast.
For 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 was big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year.
It was a wild year.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Here we go on a Friday.
Live in Los Angeles, it's the herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening.
Thanks for Megan House.
That's part of your day.
Blazing 5.
We've been on a three-month heater, and actually, I kind of like to pick.
There's six games I'm picking 5.
Probably love 2 to 3, but, you know, that's the breaks.
We have a lot going on today.
We've had breaking news four or five straight days.
We have it again today.
J. Mack, tis the season for breaking news.
Yeah, yeah.
I don't know how you, I mean, you're really toughing through this week.
It sounds like this could be your flu game, your Jordan flu game today.
There we go, my Jordan flu game.
I'll get through it.
So, the Patriots have hired one of their own linebackers coach, Gerard Mayo.
His nickname is Bill Jr.
His entire career was New England.
It would not be my first choice.
He's a defensive head coach.
You know how I feel about that?
It's a lame, talentless offense, and good luck for a linebacker coach trying to solve it.
I do, however, think there is a way to solve it, and the Houston Texans are the way.
Hit, got the number three pick in the draft, hitting the quarterback.
You get Drake Maid, Jaden Daniels, LSU, kid becomes C.J. Stroud-like, and you have a smart GM-level guy that can do the personnel in the draft.
And you can just worry about the defense and getting it right?
Listen, Sean McDermott's in with a great quarterback.
Todd Bowles has Baker Mayfield.
He made the playoffs.
John Harbaugh's got Lamar Jackson.
If you hit on a quarterback, that's where defensive coaches thrive.
You fix the defense.
Have a stark quarterback lead the offense.
But he is known as Bill Jr.
So it shows the power of tradition.
In the Northeast, I lived there for a decade.
Boston is the most provincial town out east.
It's lovely.
It's wonderful.
I've got friends there.
It's a stay within the family town.
Fences make good neighbors, as they say, in New England.
They keep their arms around the region.
If you look at most great hires, it's outsiders, though.
Sean Payton and New Orleans was an outsider.
McVade of the Rams.
Shanahan to the 49ers.
Stefansky, all those years in Minnesota, Cleveland.
He's going to win his second head coach of the year.
Pete Carroll in Seattle, no connection.
If you look throughout the NFL, it's mostly outsiders, John Harbaugh of the Ravens.
A couple of coaches we like now, young guys, Shane Stuyken, Indy, no connection.
Zach Taylor, Cincinnati, no connection, Mike McDaniel, Miami.
So outsiders do very, very well.
And I would have tried to get an offensive guy in a new set of eyes and new ideas and new
perspective, but they're going to go with Bill Jr.
It really comes down to their first draft pick.
If they can find a quarterback and hire like the Texans did or really,
sharp guy upstairs, you can turn this around quickly. I mean, the Texans were a joke this time
last year, an absolute joke. Talk bottom. Now, I think they're going to win this weekend. I think
they have a real shot to win this weekend. But the Patriots, it does feel like, to me anyway,
the Patriots are just adding a new chapter to the same old book. But it's the power of tradition.
It's hard to let go. I grew up as a kid.
kid and my college football team, the Huskies, what a national title.
And for the next 25 years, anybody that knew the former coach had a coffee with them.
They often wanted to hire as the head coach.
That's just the way it works in football.
If you've had great sustained success, you generally look within.
I would go outside.
I would go offense.
I would reboot.
But, again, you hit on the quarterback in the draft.
Texans did it.
The Patriots certainly can.
Here's Eric Mangini, the former Patriot Plenty of Rings yesterday.
Drod's never played anywhere else.
He's never coached anywhere else.
The only system he knows is the system that he's been in.
So you're going to get a younger version, a different personality,
but he can't draw on any outside experiences of other ways to do it.
I don't know if you want to go follow Bill Belichick because of what the expectations are.
And Drod Miao, I'm sure he's an excellent candidate,
but it's the same thing that you had, and that could be, that's going to be challenging.
Yeah, all the years I've been doing this, it's just a very powerful reality.
Sustained success means you look backwards, you lean into it, you hire the assistant, the player,
the connectivity between the X legend and hopefully the new legend, it's just the way it works.
Not the way I do it, but get a quarterback, I could be wrong.
there's a story. Dan Graziano, a very good reporter, is reporting that the Eagles firing
Nick Seriani on Monday, if they lose to the Buccaneers, is on the table. So we have talked
about this. This is the place that nobody's discussing with Belichick, because it's not
open, but I think it's a real possibility. Strong ownership, excellent personnel guy, what they
need is somebody to shore up their linebackers and secondary. That's literally Bill
He wouldn't have to be the personnel guru.
He wouldn't talk much with the owner.
He likes to do his own thing.
They've got the quarterback.
They've got the receivers, tight ends, the O line.
Cap is fine.
That one works.
But Philly would have to lose.
I don't think they will.
But I do think it points out something that's fairly obvious,
and it took a while to figure out or did it.
Nick Seriani, between his sort of juvenile sideline annex and theatrics,
his anxiety at the podium and the total erosion of the Eagles offense,
and he's an offensive guy, it appears that Nick Seriani's a bit over his skis.
It was Brandon Staley with the Chargers.
The more money they spent on defense, the worse it got, had to fire him.
They're spending plenty of money on offense in Philadelphia.
It's bad and getting worse.
All the great coaches offensively in this league, McVeigh, Shanahan, Andy Reed,
they lose coordinators all the time.
it has very little effect on the quality of the offense.
I mean, Kevin Stefansky's on his fourth quarterback.
It's had no effect on the offense.
Zach Taylor lost Joe Burrow halfway through the season.
They finished above 500.
Siriani just lost a coordinator.
He didn't lose.
A.J. Brunt, he didn't lose Donovan Smith.
He didn't lose his left tackle.
He didn't lose Kelsey.
He didn't lose.
He just lost a coordinator.
McVeigh loses him annually.
Shanahan loses him right.
Andy Reid's lost several.
He loses a coordinator and it's man overboard.
So we have multiple offensive coaches this year on their second, third and fourth quarterback.
Stuyken, Kevin Stefansky.
Look at Green Bay.
Look at how much Jordan Love has improved October 15th to close to January 15th.
He is like a new player.
I mean, you can say you knew all along, but LaFleur was barking at Jordan Love after games at the Post.
podium in October, and now all he talks about is how good his parents are, what a great kid he is.
I mean, it's like transform Jordan Love, and Jordan obviously deserves a lot of credit for that.
But here's what I would ask you.
Whenever I have a question about a coach, the first thing I ask is, are they getting their side of the ball right?
Nick Seriani loses a coordinator, all the talent in the world can't.
The second thing is, Brandon Staley's Chargers, what's your identity?
I thought it was analytics.
and then it stopped being analytics.
What is Nick Seriani's identity?
Is he a great play designer?
No.
A great play caller?
No.
A massive culture builder like Dan Campbell in Detroit.
Not really.
So when he got hired, I said,
I talked to two or three people in the league,
and they all said the same thing.
I don't know if he's ready.
He butchered the opening press conference.
Honestly, looked absolutely terrified to be up there.
And it was very turbulent for a year
until Shane Steichen started calling plays.
And my guess is Shane Steichen created a shield to protect his limitations.
Because that's what it looks like right now.
Sometimes in life it takes a while for the truth to come out.
You have a protector, a shield, and you're really over your skis,
and we just don't know it, and all of a sudden the shield leaves, moves on,
and you are unseated, you unravel.
And that's what it feels like.
The Eagles offense in the last five weeks,
it's getting worse, is 30th in giveaways, 23rd in passing yards and offensive touchdowns per game.
So again, Seriani leaves.
They have some inertia from that offense.
Shane Steichen leaves, excuse me.
They've got some momentum from that offense.
The longer he's gone, the worse it gets.
It looks like to me, it's a Brandon Staley thing.
By the way, Brandon Staley was one of the finalists for the jobs in Philadelphia.
That's why the Chargers I was told hire him.
The Eagles wanted him.
So they wanted a new young guy.
Staley didn't work.
Nick Sariani loses Monday.
I mean, if the story is out by a legitimate reporter,
firing him is on the table if he loses.
Well, that means if he loses, he's fired.
Unless it's like a brilliant offensive performance.
They lose in overtime.
There's a bad officiating call.
So this is the one to keep your eye on with Belichick.
It's not being discussed because it's not open.
But I always worry if you can't get your side of the ball right.
And secondly, when you have a great coordinator or something,
somebody leaves and the longer that person's gone, the uglier it gets.
Remember, over 50, 60% of the guys hired, don't make it.
Right?
They don't make it.
And even the great ones, Andy Reed and Philly, Belichick, and New England, eventually that doesn't work.
And you move on.
So that's where we are.
There's a lot of interesting stories today.
The Alabama job has not been filled yet.
Keep your eye on that.
That thing could break today.
Absolutely could.
Everybody says the pressure is on the cowboys.
I'm going to make an argument.
There's a lot of pressure on Detroit.
I think you're going to like this, Jay Mack.
Blazing five and 50 minutes.
I just can't get over this Eagles take.
We're going to give Jalen Hurts now his third offensive coordinator next year.
If we move on from Syria.
But when he had a good one, he was an MVP-level guy.
So he's proven when you give him a good one, he's great.
You know, continuity matters.
I mean, do you want to be the Browns and the Jets changing your underwear?
like every week.
Like,
I mean,
this is,
it just doesn't make sense
to rotate a coach in,
like every two years.
But does it make sense
that a coach
struggles early
and struggles late,
does it make sense
to retain him
when it does appear,
the connectivity to wins
is a singular coordinator
who's now in the coach
of the year candidacy
in Shane Steichen.
So,
I mean,
you could say,
it doesn't make sense.
Philadelphia's history
is they move off average.
They're not,
chaotic. Annie Reid was there for over a decade. I mean, Doug Peterson was there four and a half,
five years. Chip was there for three years. But they'll move off people if you don't hit their
standard. And their standard is, we get to Super Bowls. That's a great point. The Buffalo Bills had
their issue with the offensive coordinator, Ken Dorsey, right? Ran him out. They ran him out.
They got the new guy Brady in. They didn't panic and say, oh, McDermott's got to win. Now, if
McDermin had missed the playoffs, that's another story. But they also, they looked and said,
boy, when we get Josh Allen the right coordinator, he's the best player in the last.
league. And then they replaced Dayball. They put in a guy and just like, oh, he's regressed. They get rid of
him. Josh is now back to being arguably the best player in the league. If you have a great talent,
it could be a pitcher, whatever it is. And clearly when you give him the right assistant,
he elevates to elite status. That guy leaves. He drops. Well, go find the next great coach.
There's always a great coach out there. But we know that about half the time, you just hire the
wrong coordinator, assistant, or head coach.
It's stunning to me that Matt Patricia could be calling defensive plays in Nick
Siriani's like win or get fired game.
Like that ain't good news for the Eagles.
Patricia's been a disaster.
Come on, you know this.
Now, I do like Philadelphia Monday, but I think it's all of it's on the table.
If Dan's reporting it, it's on the table.
It probably helps that hardball's out there, Rabel's out there, Patriots step in it and
hire chair.
Are the Patriots of New Lakers, by the way?
Just hiring former Patriots.
Let's just keep it in house, you know?
It's very common.
Winters here in L.A.

I'm going to take the Chiefs minus four and a half.
That's not the best number, but I think the dolphins are a bit of an injury-plagged mess in zero degrees at Kansas City.
Take the Chiefs.
Listen, I don't think the Steelers can beat the bills.
Mike Tomlin, though, is a great underdog coach.
Bad, cold, windy weather.
I think tens too many points to give up.
I take Pittsburgh as the side.
And yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll take the Rams plus three at Detroit head coach, quarterback advantages.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam Jett.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple,
podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Gerald thinks all the pressures on the Dallas Cowboys hosting Green Bay.
And I do think Green Bay is a live underdog with that offense and that staff and
Aaron Jones running and those receivers and that protection.
I think Green Bay could drop 25, 27, 30 on the Cowboys.
I just tend to think the Cowboys will drop 33 or 34 on a Green Bay defense that's mostly
been a sieve.
But this week, Jerry Jones said, listen, I'm still absolutely.
committed to my head coach Mike McCarthy.
I don't know how I could be any clearer.
Coach McCarthy is under contract for next year.
And so that's not an issue.
Secondly, I couldn't be more pleased with what he's done and how he's coached.
I certainly haven't sat down here right in the middle of the playoffs
and started talking to him about something like a contract or something like that.
Why would you do that?
This is where he needs to have.
He, by the way, is the busiest cat in all of Texas.
So Jason Garrett had DAC for four years, and he averaged 10 wins.
And Mike McCarthy's had DAC now for four years, and he's averaged 12 wins.
But DAC is more expensive now, so I think the roster I would maintain had a little more depth with Jason Garrett,
who didn't have to have expensive DAC.
It's better than the roster now with expensive DAC and Mike McCarthy.
So, but four years, between the two of them, their average and 11 wins, both offensive coaches.
Yet neither's had any success with DAC in the playoffs, right?
How do we know it's not a DAC issue?
So his closest comp in the NFL, and I've said this for years, is Kirk Cousins.
They have virtually identical regular season resumes.
It's weird how close it is.
But you know what else?
They have identical postseason careers.
Kirk Cousins is on his second head coach, and he's one in three in the playoffs with a passer rating of 93,
completing 66% of his throes.
Dax had two coaches.
His playoff record is two and four.
Complete slightly less of a percentage than Kirk.
Passer rating's also lower.
It's the same guy.
Dak, to me, is Kirk Cousins with a Jordan brand, is that people in Dallas think Dack is amazing.
People in Minnesota love Kirk, but they don't think he's.
He's amazing, mostly because they watch him lose to Aaron Rogers, who is a more gifted
thrower.
But I always think there's always a coach issue in Dallas.
Why isn't it just Kirk Cousins and Dack are kind of the same guy, two coaches, two
staffs, lots of different players.
Cousins and Dack have virtually identical regular season stats.
They also have identical playoff stats.
So if Dallas beats Green Bay as a home favorite, that feels like what Kirk Cousins would do.
And then in the next round, if they had to face Stafford and McVay, or, you know, maybe Detroit at home or San Francisco, you'd be like, yeah, Dak would lose that game.
But most people instinctively say McCarthy would lose that game.
But if you're just honest about it and you look at Cousins and Dax playoff and regular season,
stats. They are virtually
identical. In fact, McCarthy's
getting the best out of DAC he's
ever been, but he can't make him Lamar.
He can't make him Josh Allen Mahomes.
They're limitations. He's a fourth
round pick. You know who else is a fourth round pick?
Kirk Cousins
was a fourth round pick.
Nobody wants to come clean on this.
Kirk is Dak. Kirk's
a better thrower. More accurate,
the numbers tell you that. Dax's
a better mover. And they're both
B-plus guys. B-plus guys.
don't win road playoff games very often. B plus guys don't beat A guys at quarterback in the playoffs very often.
Kirk doesn't, that doesn't. Jay Mack with the news.
No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
All right, Colin, I feel like I'm going to turn into a weatherman today. Some of these weather reports.
Brutal. For the weekend.
Frightening. Like, listen, you and I don't mind watching football in crummy weather, snow, cold?
It looks cool on my television.
I don't know how people want to go to these games.
For instance, Kansas City, right?
The offense, we know the offense hasn't been great,
and Mahomes are struggling the receivers.
But have you seen this weather report,
potentially 30 degrees, negative wind chill?
Negative wind chill of 30 degrees.
I skied a few weeks ago,
and it was between four degrees and six degrees.
But an hour and a half, and I was wrapped up,
I was done.
And I had a helmet on, I had ski jackets, ski clothes.
after about an hour and a half, hour 45, us done.
So these guys can't catch a cold, the chief's receivers.
We know that.
And now the football's going to be hard because it's going to be cold.
And it's negative 30 degrees anyways.
Patrick Mahomes expects the offense to somehow take a leap heading into the playoffs.
I'm extremely confident not only in our offense, but in the football team.
You see how the defense is playing.
Offensively, I feel like we're going to play our best football at the right time.
And I think if we can just score, we don't have to score too much points.
So we can just score enough points.
Our defense will shut the door, and we can find a way to play.
to get a win. I think it's very low scoring. I think the number initially favored the chiefs.
It favors now the dolphins. This feels like 1613.
Yeah, so the total's coming down.
Should. As well, it should. What is the total right now? I'm seeing, uh, wow, uh, somewhere,
like 43, 43 and a half depending on, yeah, yeah, yeah. Unless there are fumbles near the goal line or,
I mean, you could have turnovers, but I mean, this feels so 1613 in perfect weather in the last six
weeks, Kansas City's not scoring. They're going to score in this. And it looks like
Mostor it's going to play, so Moister and A. Chan. Yeah, I mean, the dolphins should be able
to run the ball to some degree. Yeah. I'm worried about the Chiefs. I do think the Chiefs win.
I'm the same one. What's the percentage chance Miami wins this football game?
Well, again, bad weather can often favor the inferior team. So the favorite team, if the weather
was a non-factor would win. But bad weather means everybody makes mistakes and good teams usually
don't. So a good team could be forced into errors. They're not prone to make in moderate weather.
I mean, listen, Pacheco is a really good running back. I think he gives them a chance. I see like over
30 carries for each team. Absolutely. You just don't want to make mistakes in this crap. By the way,
it's tight ends, bubble screens, running the football. It's going to be a really, and by the way,
Tua is a very accurate thrower.
So, you know, you're doing stuff that's easy, peasy for Tua.
Yeah, like, Tyree Kill, I just don't know that this is a game kind of built for him.
You're not throwing the ball deep down the field.
Reverses, receivers now can be used as backs.
They'll get the ball to him, but it's not going to be post-patterers.
All right.
Next up is the really bad weather game.
The Buffalo Bills.
So they are hot, right?
They've won five straight.
The offense starting to hit its stride.
Josh Allen says the team is peaking.
at just the right time.
You want to peak at the right time.
I think this football team, we've still got our best ball to play, but we're turning in the
right direction.
You know, and we're very fortunate to be playing another game.
There's a lot of teams that aren't in the playoffs, a lot of guys that are, you know, not
practicing today.
So this is a very inspired group right now.
We just love that we're able to come in here and do what we'd love to do.
So speaking of not practicing, Gabe Davis, will the
PCL doesn't look like he's going to be a go.
I don't see a world where they're throwing deep anyway,
but I look at the depth chart.
Gabe Davis out, sorry.
Khalil Shakir and Deonti Hardie are like next man up.
But I'll tell you what, both are pretty quick.
You're quick, yeah.
Yeah, they're quick.
I kind of like some of their young receivers.
Like Green Bay, I think they've done a good job.
I think Buffalo is, I'm not worried about that.
I think Gabe Davis has been inconsistent anyway.
I don't worry about that.
I've got to tell you, Green Bay and Buffalo have some little young receivers that move well.
I like them.
Here's what's interesting.
Steelers dipped under 10 at a lot of gambling shops.
It's still 10 most places, but some of the other ones are going 9.5 years.
I stayed away from it.
Well, the total is so low.
It's 34.5 right now.
So a 10 point margin.
It's going to be tough to get margin in this weather.
This could easily be...
2313-ish.
Do you remember that Patriots Bill's game was like a Monday night football where
Mac Jones threw the ball like three times?
Because the wind, those lake effect wins and the snow, like if you look at the pictures,
it looks really bleak.
the radar. This could easily be like...
So there were reports yesterday.
They weren't going to play the game in Buffalo.
I think that was... I don't know. I think it might have been some fake stuff, but like, you know,
people putting nonsense out there. The weather looks bad.
I just... I don't know who's going to this game, Buffalo Bills fans.
Anyways, final story. Let's go back to Nick Sabin's retirement.
It's caught a lot of people off guard. And now the next head coach, boy, this search,
Colin, Steve Sarkeesian will not be going to Tuscalo.
I'm glad.
Put out a tweet last night.
That's the best.
I mean, if you're asking me personally,
and all things considered,
the Texas job's the best job in the country.
No state tax in your big salary.
Austin, Texan is the best college down in the country.
Big N.I.L. collective.
Huge N.I.L. collective.
Best A.D. in the country.
Many subscribe to the fact that Texas has the best A.D.
You know what's funny, too?
Perspective.
People there love their food.
They love their music.
They have more of a life than your typical small college town.
So if you win 10, 11 games a year,
if Sark could in the next five years win one Natty, he's like Mac Brown. He's minted. He's a made man.
It is Texas is the best job in the country to me.
Because like in Alabama, there's no perspective. Ohio State, no perspective.
I mean, they want to run Ryan Day out. He's losing to Georgia and Michigan.
Texas is different. And it's also an amazing place to live.
He's sticking with Quinn Ewers. Quinn Ewers coming back, Arch Manning on deck. So they're set for the next few years.
But then you're like, all right, well, so who's Alabama going to get? We'll get to DeBoer in a second.
Mike Norvell, does that do anything for you?
I think he, I think if he's, listen, I said Sark's the first guy you call, but Sark should say no.
Davosweeney's probably the second guy you call, but why leave Clemson?
Well, Al-Alan D'Bore, I think,'s the best fit, but Washington's going to pay him $9 million a year, I've been told.
The boosters are all stepping up today.
So I guess the big issue with Dabo Sweeney, who I thought was a slam dunk, they started to look into his contract.
there's like an extra surcharge if he goes to Alabama.
Right.
Because he graduated from there.
That's a pretty smart move by Clemson to put that in the contract.
So then it comes down to like Mike Norvell or Kalin DeBorte.
Well, Norville's got more of a southern feel.
And in the south, again, very provincial.
Mike Norvel said he's staying now.
Is that the latest?
All right.
So now it's down to Kay.
Now the other name is that Tommy Reese, that 31 year.
The offensive coordinator who used to be at Notre Dame?
I saw it bandied about last night.
He would be like a Sean McVeyhire.
that nobody knows, but he's on the right side of the ball, young, energetic.
They think he's a culture builder.
Colin, if they don't get DeBoer, now you're looking at like third and fourth tier options.
Well, that doesn't necessarily a bad thing.
It's not always the worst.
Yeah, I mean, be very careful about the glamour hire is not always the best hire.
I, listen, again, Gerard, Gerard Mayo for the Patriots, it wouldn't have been my hire.
But if they could get their hands on Drake May, who many boys,
believe is not Caleb, but really good.
And Drake May becomes kind of a
Josh Allen big kid who can run and throw.
Guess what?
Gerard Mayo looks like a pretty good coach.
So, I mean, Alabama,
the chances of having a legend
and your next coach
is his equal, virtually none.
I mean, Oklahoma is hit on almost
every coach they've hired. But Barry Switzer
left, they had Gary Gibb,
and it worked. And USC post
Pete Carroll had four hires. A lot of
talented coaches. Didn't work. What do you make
to board, he had a radio appearance and he has canceled it and all these Washington fans like,
oh, it's over.
Well, I am told, you know, right now Washington has a new athletic director. So they are going
to boosters and saying, you know, no state tax up there. So probably they're just saying,
let's get the 10 million bucks. I want my staff to have a raise so it doesn't get poached.
So this is what coaches have to do. They have to use this leverage. The other name that has
to be considered is Lane Kiffin. Now, he and Nick had a, you know, it was, you know, it was,
It contentious, but a friendly, respectful relationship.
I think Lane is arguably the best hire, but he's very happy at Old Miss, and he is a,
that Old Miss team next year.
They're going to be good.
Oh, they're a top five team.
So, but if you're telling me Bama or Old Miss, I take the Bama job.
Kiffin, it's funny about Kiffin.
And this is a great thing in life.
Kiffin was done.
His career was over, fired in a parking garage in L.A.
But he's good at what he does, head down, focused,
Look at his career now.
May replace the legend.
So Kiffin, if you ask Nick Saban about his best coordinators ever, he's going to say Sark and Kiffin.
Okay, you said coordinating.
How is Kiffin done as a head coach?
Excellent.
Florida Atlantic or wherever it was, great.
All missed and excellent.
And the pressure of Alabama, you think he can handle it?
Oh, the pressure.
Yeah.
Well, I mean, he's coaching in the SEC right now.
I mean, I'm not out on him.
I'm just, you know, playing devil's advocate.
All right.
Are we done?
There we go.
Jay Mack with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd-Lie News.
If you coach in the SEC, there's pressure.
Kaelin-Nabor at Washington.
They've run through coaches.
If he doesn't win nine games a year and he will,
but if he doesn't, he'll be in trouble.
All these jobs.
Chip Kelly at UCLA, it's a basketball school.
He's been under pressure for four straight years.
Football is the only thing that makes consistently big money in college athletics.
You've got to win.
So it's not the pressure to replace Sabin.
it's the lack of perspective at Alabama.
Ohio State's like that.
Ohio State, Alabama, there's about seven, eight of them that are just nonsense.
USC stuck with Clay Hilton forever.
Texas has stuck with guys.
They have standards, but Texas is always taking a deep breath.
They don't fashion themselves as crazy people at Texas.
USC wants the kids to have a good experience.
They don't want to become a carousel.
Bama's like, I mean, they'll fire you if you have a bad first year.
I mean, they'll just run you off the campus.
campus. So that's not the pressure. It's just, I don't like taking jobs where there's a lack of
perspective. If you interview for a job, what are realistic standards for me to meet? I mean,
if Fox had come to me first year and say, we need you to be DSPN. Well, it's not a good job.
Be realistic. We've got to build this thing up. It's going to take six, seven years.
So I don't think Alabama has a ton of perspective. Ohio State can be crazy town. I mean,
Ryan, they beat everybody but Michigan and Georgia. Who in the hell's beating those teams?
Yeah, Florida Gators probably qualify for Crazy Town.
Well, a lot of those SEC towns, they just, you know, perspective really, that's why I've always said Michigan and Texas are great jobs.
They'll give you another year.
The Michigan example of Harbaugh.
I mean, they struggled early and they kept him in year nine or whatever it is.
Harbaugh was losing to Michigan State for the first four years.
And it was like, no, we're going to keep, we're going to get this right.
He's a Michigan man.
Let's get it right.
The caving to social media and outside nonsense pressure is just.
It's a lot of bad athletic directors do.
The good ones don't.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio,
FS1 and the IHeart Radio app.
Hey, we're Kavino and Rich.
Fox Sports Radio every day, 5 to 7 p.m. Eastern.
But here's the thing.
We never have enough time to get to everything we want to get to.
And that's why we have a brand new podcast called Overpromised.
You see, we're having so much fun in our two-hour show.
We never get to everything.
Honestly, because this guy is overpromising things we never have time for.
Yeah, you blubberlips.
Blame and me.
Well, you know what?
It's called over-promise.
You should be good at it because you've been over-promising women for years.
Well, it's a Kavino and Rich after show, and we want you to be a part of it.
We're going to be talking sports, of course.
But we're also going to talk life and relationships.
And if Rich and I are arguing about something or we didn't have enough time, it will continue on our after show called over-promised.
Well, if you don't get enough, Kavino and Rich, make sure you check out over-promised.
And also uncensored, by the way.
Maybe we'll go at it even a little harder.
It's going to be the best after-show podcast of all time.
There you go.
Over-promising.
And remember, you could see it on YouTube, but definitely join us.

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all.
embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

A win is a win.
A win is a win.
I don't care which I'm saying.
Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, the reactions,
my journey from basketball to college football,
or my career in sports media.
Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined.
And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.
This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators,
and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated.
One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment,
and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to?
to do a little kill.
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84's big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS.
on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
It's a Packers against Dak and the Cowboys.
It all kicks off at 4 Eastern One Pacific on Fox.
At Fox, we only bring you the very best of games.
It's all we bring you here.
We have very high standards.
So Detroit is favored.
It's one of my blazing five picks, the Rams, Detroit.
They're favored over the Rams.
They are the feel-good story, right?
Dan Campbell losing franchise.
And you could view the Detroit Lions reasonably as we are entering a new era of winning,
perhaps of dominance.
Or you could view them differently.
Just consider this in division for Detroit.
Jordan Love can play.
He's way better than everybody thought, including Matt LaFleur in October.
Their young, tight-in receivers are excellent.
Aaron Jones now healthy.
They always draft and develop O lines.
You're not beating them.
You're not going two and O against them a lot with that offense.
Chicago probably drafts Caleb Williams,
the most talented college quarterback, many beliefs into Andrew Locke.
and Minnesota's got a sharp young offensive coach.
Kirk Cousins is 19, 10, and 1 in division since he got there.
You're not sweeping them either.
That division's going to get better.
Add this.
Jared Goff is going to be the most expensive quarterback in that division
because his contract next year is the last year.
It's going to be very expensive to retain him.
And if you try to move off him, 50% chance, you'll whiff on your college draft pick.
So Jared Goffs going to be not necessarily the best quarterback in that division.
He's not as talented as Caleb Williams.
He's not as athletic as Jordan Love.
Not quite as accurate as Kirk Cousins, but he's going to be very expensive in a year if you retain him.
Add this.
Jim Harbaugh lands in Washington, Belichick in Philly, two major upgrades to the NFC coaching tree.
Be honest.
If Detroit, with this roster, and it is a great roster,
I really like it all but the secondary.
If they lose this weekend,
you sure Dan's the guy?
I'm not denying he built a great culture.
But I have said five times on this show,
the star of this franchise is your GM.
Golf's good.
Campbell's likable.
But you watch that cowboy close.
We're not playing Madden, right?
Going for two?
That was bad coaching.
Yes, he's built an aggressive culture.
what's the second gear?
What's the next pitch?
So I don't think you're going to feel nearly as good about Detroit's future if they lose to the Rams.
McVeigh in a rebuild year would be beating you with a stacked roster.
Okay, that division, even if the Vikings don't move off Kirk Cousins, he's 1910 and 1 in that division.
He had a 500 record against Aaron Rogers.
You're not sweeping him with Jared Gough.
You're not.
So I think this, you know, Dan Campbell's done a good job.
He's built a tough, aggressive culture, did not like his coaching down the stretch against Dallas.
He talks about facing the Rams this weekend.
I'm not worried about that, the stage, the all of those things, because we've dealt with that for a while now.
And I feel like we're prepared for that.
You know, it's going to come down to all the same things it does in every game for us.
It's going to be the fundamentals, you know.
stay true to what we've done and what's gotten us to this point.
Won 12 games for a reason.
We're where we're at for a reason.
Let's do it again.
Here's the other thing.
I saw a quote this morning on Belichick.
Jeremy Fowler, reporter at the other place, says he quoted an NFC executive.
Quote, I don't think teams are clamoring for Belichick.
I might be wrong, but I'm skeptical.
He's older.
Things got stale in New England.
I think it would take a pretty desperate owner, in my opinion.
Now, I think to some degree, he is right.
But he's not absolutely right.
You're going to tell me Belichick with Justin Herbert wouldn't make the Chargers viable?
Yes, he would.
Philadelphia loses Monday.
Fire Sariani.
Belichick with Jalen Hertz and those weapons.
Wouldn't make them better coached than Philly?
Yes, he would.
Now, a total rebuild in Carolina for a team that doesn't have any.
Anything right? Needs great drafting and Bill wants to say in personnel, that's desperate.
But he is the greatest defensive coach ever. And here is a reminder of what we currently have
in the AFC. The number one seat is Baltimore. Defensive leaning head coach with a star quarterback.
The number two seat is Buffalo. Defensive head coach with Josh Allen.
The number four seat is Houston. Defensive coached D'emico Ryan's with C.J. Stroud.
If Bill has a star quarterback, don't know if you've checked, he wins rings.
Most of your great defensive coaches.
Go look at the history of the NFL.
Great defensive coach with a star quarterback in his prime, they hoist trophies.
Mike Tomlin, when Ben was in his prime, young and in his prime.
So if he gets Justin Herbert or Jalen Hertz, in year one or two or both, they're going to be good football teams.
So we have, however, come to discover more information.
This is why we change opinions on the show and why you should every day of your life.
We have new things we know for sure.
Bill needs a certain template to win.
There is a template with Bill.
It's got to have a star quarterback, like mostly everybody.
Now, Kyle Shanahan doesn't so far, but he also doesn't have any rings.
You got to have a star quarterback with Bill.
And the other thing, I think Bill needs a very shrewd personnel guy.
By the way, he had one in New England.
He left for Houston.
They had a great draft.
So Bill needs a personnel guy, not his strength, needs a quarterback, little toned-deft offense.
Those are not big asks.
But I will say that one of my biggest concerns with Belichick, and this is really my concern
with any older executive, is that can you build a sense?
staff. It can't be your kids and retreads that nobody else wants. That's my concern.
Belichick's the greatest defensive coach in the history of football, pro football, easily.
And I still think he's a good coach when he has an elite quarterback. That's why Carolina, very
risky. Atlanta, very risky. But I mean, Chargers, you think he's going to struggle? You don't
think they'll be as good as Brandon Staley? Philadelphia? You don't think he's as good a coach as Nick
Seriani? So I honestly, and again, this
Philadelphia stuff, they have a coach, but there are stories now more than one that they,
and we have a history of Philadelphia. They'll move off a coach if it doesn't work.
Stuff to think about. Eric Mangini yesterday on why it would be hard for Bill, however,
to cede total power wherever he goes. Bill, I think, does a really good job with free agency
and on the pro side. The college side has been more of a struggle. Now,
for him to get the opportunity that he wants, he may have to get into some type of relationship,
but I would think to bring him in, it's got to be more of a partnership.
Who is going to sit and tell Bill, this is the guy that you need to coach?
This is the guy that should be on the 53 man roster.
No, we're not bringing in this free agent.
It's just hard to envision the personality that can do that.
Hmm. So there are certain fits, but New England's already checked a box.
They're going with somebody that's called Bill Jr.
So that one's done.
The chargers, I'm told, do strongly consider Ben Johnson and Harbaugh.
Both are being considered.
So there's a divide a little bit in the chargers.
Certain people close to Dean Spanos, like the young Ben Johnson,
others in the building, a little more favorable toward a legendary coach and Harbaugh head coach.
That's where we stand today.
Brabils out there a very good opportunity for him somewhere.
Let me just go through the AFC East real quick.
Jets, defensive head coach.
Buffalo Bills, defensive head coach.
New England Patriots, defensive head coach.
Miami Dolphins, one of the smartest offensive minds in the league.
Dolphins fans have to be happy with the way the Patriots search went, right?
No, if you are, I mean, ask you.
yourself, if you were a dolphin
fan today,
Gerard Mayo,
anybody shaking in their boots
in Miami? Not at all.
By the way, let me just, I floated this on my
podcast. It's a little out there. If you're
Woody Johnson and the Jets,
you see Braybel unexpectedly
hits the market. You see Harbaugh,
he's out there. Nick Sabin
retires. Belichick
out in New England. You got some of the best
coaches in football on the market.
even if you gave Robert Sala the vote of confidence a month ago,
don't you have to kind of at least call Jimmy Sexton
or Jim Harbaugh's guy and just be like, hey, we got our guy,
I know you don't want to come to the Jets, just give me a number, a ballpark.
Isn't that your job as an owner?
To like, oh my gosh, I didn't know if Rabel was going to be out there.
You told me I can't upgrade Vable over a guy like Sala who's going 1833.
I'm keeping Sala because I don't want to go for Vrable or Harba?
Well, they have made a decision as a franchise to let Aaron Rogers sort of be the de facto chairman.
So the moves are all made based on Aaron.
I'm going to call Jim Horbaugh.
What do you think?
No, I'm a mask mandate guy.
I'm just making that.
That's a joke.
I don't think.
I think Aaron now has final say on a lot of things.
And that's not my organization.
It's yours.
But I think you brought Aaron there and there's an understanding that you're going to have his people,
Alan Lazzard and Nat Hackett.
I'm not saying I would do that.
But that's the decision.
And I say, when you hand the franchise to an old player and the old player gets hurt,
I mean, I don't have the Jets in the playoffs this year.
I didn't, and I don't have them in next year.
I've already made my next year projections.
I mean, based on what I think the top of the draft will be,
I don't see the Jets.
I think Aaron's career in terms of relevance is over.
Blazing 5 next.
