Here we go on a Tuesday. Lots to talk about live in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:03:13 It's the herd wherever you may be. And however, you may be listening. Thanks for making us part of your day. One hour from now, the herd hierarchy. Nick Wright today, Eric B. enemy in studio. Can't wait to talk to Eric Biena Mee. Mahalms, Andy Reed, Belichick in college.
Starting point is 00:03:29 Can't wait for that. couple of hours. Jay Mack, I don't even want to talk about Raiders, Falcons. I'll bury that one. Why not? Eight people watched it. But I think what we watched last night, you could see it in the body language. It was visual.
Starting point is 00:03:45 It was obvious. The Chicago Bears are a broken franchise. Oh. Yeah. Okay, Vikings. We'll get to that in a bit. But this is a broken franchise in Chicago. The ownership, bottom three. team president, a young general manager, hit and miss. If he left, fine, if he stayed okay.
Starting point is 00:04:05 Coaching staff, none of it works. None of it. Yeah, they got some decent players. The Jets have all sorts of good players. They're four and ten. And Caleb Williams, who was privately concerned before the draft but didn't want to be a bad guy, this was his nightmare. They have no leadership.
Starting point is 00:04:23 Top down. And by the way, how do you fix it? well, the only way to fix it, go to the Chargers, who also had a really good young quarterback, had a handful of really, really good players. And they went and stopped screwing around and finally paid big money for a coach. Fifteen year, $15 million a year, Jim Harbaugh, and they have not regretted a second of it. They had a bad culture. Why?
Starting point is 00:04:56 most notably they had a coach Brandon Staley that was completely over his skis just like the bear staff you can't blame Thomas Brown I mean he's had three different parking spots in the organization in four weeks they keep moving him up the food chain he's not ready for this stuff he'll be fine he'll have a nice career there is only one answer to this it's Mike Vrable that's it there are no other answers no more lightweights no more coordinators this lift is too big even with Vrable I'm not sure he can solve everything. But this is an organization and, frankly, a city that's very, very political. And the only times in the history of Chicago, sports or politics, that you've ever had great success is with strong, defiant leadership.
Starting point is 00:05:44 Look at the history of the city's sports. You had Theo Epstein. All right. And Mike Ditka. All right. You start looking around from politics. To sports. That's Chicago's answer.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Vrable's it. There's nobody else out there. There's nobody else out. No college guys. No lightweight coordinators. The job's too big. And like the Chargers, the Chargers, at least, that's why I think this is a big lift. I'm not sure if Vrable can solve it.
Starting point is 00:06:13 The Chargers have always been good at quarterback. I mean, it was Dan Foucho I grew up watching. Breeze, Rivers, Herbert. They've always been high-octane, fun to watch. And it's not like the Spanos family. They had a reputation as being full. frugal, they weren't crazy, they weren't meddling, they were frugal. They no longer are.
Starting point is 00:06:30 They finally just said, sometimes in life you just have to admit, I got to get out of the way. And the Spanos family said, you know what, we're giving it to Harbaugh, and Harbaugh's going to build a staff, and he's going to call the D.C., the general manager, and they just got out of the way, and it works. And that's the only way to do it. I think this is a much bigger lift, much, much bigger lift than the Chargers job. Like when they hired Harbaugh, we all kind of knew, oh, yeah, I go in 10, 11 games, they may make the playoffs, and they're going to. Okay, we could feel that.
Starting point is 00:07:03 But this one is, the division is really good with really good coaches. You could have had Cliff Kingsbury. You couldn't get out of the way. You could have had Harbaugh. Kevin Warren couldn't get out of the way. There is only one way to solve this thing. I mean, you won the Bryce Young trade, and you're only one game better than Carolina. And it was the steal of the decade.
Starting point is 00:07:21 So it's not, and it's just not a quarterback thing. And let me give an example. And I, and for the television audience, you'll understand this. Radio's a little harder to follow. But if you look at every division in football, not named the AFC South, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Kansas City, Rams, Tampa, Detroit, Philly, Washington, I can argue, all have either the best owner, the best front office, or both. it's not just the quarterback and coach although they are really important it all starts upstairs bills owner front office excellent lions front office excellent kansas city all of the above washington flushed all the losers out have much better people in ram stand cronkey less
Starting point is 00:08:11 need like it's just a scouting department you can just keep blaming coaches you can keep running around this organization is broken. Vrable is the only answer. I feel bad for Caleb Williams, but this is what he was worried about privately. Out here in Los Angeles, my people connected to him said, you're not going to be a bad guy,
Starting point is 00:08:33 but man, look at their history. They've never had a 4,000-yard passing quarterback. That's why I said, the chargers are a little bit, you can kind of look at the chargers and go, well, look what they did. They got out of the way and got Harbaugh. But the chargers had never been this dysfunctional. They just lost a bunch of close games.
Starting point is 00:08:49 They always developed quarterbacks. They had a bunch of good players. And the ownership group was not meddling. I don't know if you can fix Chicago. Some things are unfixable. Vrable's the only answer. Here's Caleb after. It's been frustrating and encouraging.
Starting point is 00:09:06 The frustrating part is obviously we're on a... How many games now? Eight. Yeah, eight game losing streak. And that's not... Like I said before, it's new to me. I haven't experienced anything like this. So their encouraging part is how much we fight as a team.
Starting point is 00:09:25 Okay, so let's just talk about the Vikings. Again, Raiders, Falcons, I can't put that in the first segment. So Sam Darnold, Minnesota has a tough decision. I would franchise Sam Darnold to keep him around. But they brought Daniel Jones in. They drafted J.J. McCarthy. It is likely that they're going to let Sam Darnold become a free agent. And here's what's really interesting.
Starting point is 00:09:46 I love Donald. You know that. First of all, his success is a total indictment on the Jets in Carolina. I mean, Aaron Rogers' career since he went to New York, circled the toilet. Okay, so Sam Darnold is only 27 years old. So somebody's going to get a very good quarterback in his prime. Big, strong, mobile playmaker, coachable kid. Here's the thing, though. You're not going to get this good of a Sam Darnold.
Starting point is 00:10:14 Because you know, I don't even have to tell you this. coaching is not even in this league. I mean, the gap between a McVeigh and a Kevin O'Connell, Andy Reid, Sean Payton offensively, and the rest of the league, or most of the rest of the league, is the Grand Canyon. All that said, you're not going to get Kevin O'Connell, you're not getting Justin Jefferson, you're not getting Jordan Addison, the O line is underrated. This is a perfect scenario for Sam. and I look around at all the teams that could get Sam Darnold.
Starting point is 00:10:48 And I'm like, ugh, there's one exception. There's one exception. The Indianapolis Colts. Anthony Richardson's had 14 starts. He completes 50% of his throws. It's a hard decision. Sometimes you just got to say, it's not working. The Colts roster, like the football.
Starting point is 00:11:13 Vikings, above average. Colts have good receivers, not Justin Chaverson, good receivers. Their O-line, top 10 to 12 in the league. Their defense, go-ass bow Knicks and Sean Peyton, their defense had the game won. Jonathan Taylor had a goofy decision and fumbled away the game, but he's an excellent running back. There is one place where Sam Darnold can go, and it's going to look closest to this. It's in the very winnable AFC sound. It's not a great ownership division, even in Indy. It is wonky and winnable, and you'll get about 85%. You don't get a Justin Jefferson.
Starting point is 00:11:54 You're not getting him. All right, that he is just different. But I'm watching this last night, and I think they've got a very tough decision to make, but he's only 27 years old. Sam's got three to four years prime. That'll be the length of his contract. And I think Minnesota's going to let him go. I think I try to franchise him.
Starting point is 00:12:13 but if they don't, coaching in this league is not even. But going from Kevin O'Connell to the Colt Shane Steichen, that's as well as Sam Darnold can do. Michael Pittman, he played with him at USC, good old line, nice roster, Sam Darnold Colts. You would get the closest version of Vikings, Sam Darnold. I don't think Minnesota is a Super Bowl team,
Starting point is 00:12:38 but I do think, I do think, what you're seeing between Baker, Mayfield, and Sam Darnold, is this rebirth of really talented quarterbacks, and it is an indictment of the Cleveland Browns. It is an indictment for both of them with Carolina. It's an indictment of the Jets. Ownership, GMing, coaching is not close to equal in this league. So Donald's going to either keep flourishing for the Vikings
Starting point is 00:13:05 or potentially flourish for the Colts. And folks, if you watch Denver and the Colts, Bo Nix is right out of college. Second half, that's an NFL franchise quarterback. Colts don't have one. Took a swing, young kid, nice kid, doesn't work. J. Mack, we got so many things going on today. So many things with, I think people have finally come to terms with TWA in Miami.
Starting point is 00:13:29 You know, for years, people pushed back when we offered, when we suggested that Tua winning in January in the AFC was fools gold. little pushback on the two of train this one. Boy, Calhurt, you know, I thought you were on to something with the Sam Darnold to the Colts. I liked that. I was just looking into the cold. They have 50 million cap space. I kind of like that move. 50 million caps space. You follow it up with two of the problem?
Starting point is 00:13:54 You think two is the problem in Miami? No, I got like a million problems. I will just say, as I'm watching Minnesota last night, and I'm watching this weekend, Colts have 50 million in cap space. They got the roster. Yeah. Denver was getting him. hammered at home. And Denver's a playoff team.
Starting point is 00:14:13 They were getting unrest, hammered at home with the Hall of Fame coach. One team just needs a quarterback. Because I looked at the six teams that'll go after Darnel today. It's five disasters. And one, I think they could turn in Minnesota very quickly. Okay, we got a lot of stuff going on. You know, Eric B. Enemy and Nick Wright today,
Starting point is 00:14:34 heard hierarchy top of the hour. Hey, it's getting close. I went shopping yesterday. I got my daughter's stuff all taken care of. Cold weather? Oh my guy. It was like an Arctic blast out here in L.A. You left the house? It was 60. Okay. This morning it was like 40. It was 52. Okay. I had gloves in a winter hat. Hey, it's us to Jonas Brothers, and guess what? We have some big news. What's the news, huge news? We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas. We invented a podcast?
Starting point is 00:16:07 Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there. But this one's extra special. So how did we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it.
Starting point is 00:16:24 Well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers. This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing. a bit for the podcast where people could call in and say, Hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys.
Starting point is 00:16:50 Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman helped make you funny. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and headwriter, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform?
Starting point is 00:17:17 We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm CJ Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defining the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win.
Starting point is 00:17:38 matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when I tease friends stop by, like Quentin Richard We dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash will get that thing.
Starting point is 00:18:13 That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball. Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah. You figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This week on Crimless, we're joined by our first ever guest. Sorry, our first ever human guest.
Starting point is 00:18:42 I don't think I could be in the same room with Shamrock the parrot. I'd be too nervous. That's right. The very funny Will Ferrell joins Rory Scovel and me, Josh Dean, for an episode dedicated to the many crimes committed by people also named Will Ferrell. They called to his fellow officer for the nippers. What are the nippers? Very good question.
Starting point is 00:19:04 No, I was thinking, would that be a good name for like a salad dressing? Simple assault. And it's a play on word, salt? Maybe not. I say we invest and we see. There's only one way to know. This did not amuse the cops. By the way, normally the cops are amused, but this did not abuse the cops.
Starting point is 00:19:21 Will even comes clean about some of his own crimes. I didn't get caught. You know why? If you don't want to be suspected of anything, you whistle as you walk. Listen to crime lists on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Here's something that should not be as complicated as it is. Getting a racist statue removed. And here's something that should be a whole lot easier than it is.
Starting point is 00:19:48 Getting a new one put up in its place. As long as there's a politics of race in America, there's going to be a politics of remembering the Civil War. To get to school, I had to go down Robert Ely Boulevard. Get to the grocery store, I had to go down Jefferson Davis Parkway. If you're an historian and you leave out half of what the history is, you're not doing your job. I'm Akila Hughes.
Starting point is 00:20:07 in Rebel Spirit Season 2 goes deep on both of those things. The fights, the politics, the people who won, and my personal campaign to add something to the Kentucky State House that's actually worth the wall space. We are more than our bodies. We contain essence. We contain spirit. How do you represent that?
Starting point is 00:20:26 They are just fueling a fire that is really catching. You'll see what I mean. Listen to Rebel Spirit Season 2 on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I saw something that I really liked. The 49ers have suspended linebacker Devondre Campbell for refusing to play in a game. He walked out. He's done for the season.
Starting point is 00:20:52 Baltimore, meanwhile, the Ravens have excused wide receiver Giante Johnson from team activities for a week. He refused to play at one point in a game against Philadelphia. The reason I love what San Francisco organizations and Baltimore are doing because it's the opposite of the NBA. Players trample everything else. They're coddled and pampered, making sure the stars are comfortable. The NFL is a true brotherhood. Rule number one, you play banged up, nobody's ever entirely healthy, and you never, ever, under any circumstances, quit on a teammate.
Starting point is 00:21:30 NBA, Joel M. B. announced earlier this year, I will no longer be playing back-to-back. Oh, and it was accepted, and nobody pushed back because it's the NBA. In the NFL, bye-bye, off the team. A.B. was a great player, and he was a lot of work, but people kept AB around. The minute he bailed on his team, he's never put on a pro uniform. San Francisco and Baltimore players, the coaches don't have to be hard. players hold each other accountable because all football players care about all football games until the final play.
Starting point is 00:22:15 There is a truth and a brotherhood in football that is really cool. It's just sort of like people in America that have to work hurt or sick in rain and sleet and snow. Maybe it's that that creates that brotherhood, that you just play hurt. But the Niners and the Ravens are not interested. in players who are healthy and available and refuse to play. It's not going to happen in this league. We've already got one NBA. We don't need another.
Starting point is 00:22:47 And there's lots of things about the NBA I like. I think the athletes are incredible. But in the NFL, personal reasons is not an injury designation. You're sad. Go get a therapist. It's not the league's problem. You're going to play and practice every day. physically capable.
Starting point is 00:23:08 If you can't and you're banged up, there are excellent doctors. There's less hitting in the sport before and after games than ever before. The league creates millionaires every day. But they do ask that if you're capable of playing, that you play. And there's a hierarchy to the NFL. You've got your general manager builds the team, your coaches coach the team, and your players play hard. and if they're capable of playing, they play.
Starting point is 00:23:40 It's not asking that much as a pro athlete to play if you can. J. Mack with the news. No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line news. How about Josh Allen, Colin? Best quarterback in the NFL this season, there's no doubt about it. He has locked up the MVP award. Another spectacular performance against the Lions,
Starting point is 00:24:05 362 yards, two passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns, and here's tight end Dawson Knox talking about his incredible run. It is incredible. It's hard to describe what he does on a consistent basis, every single day. I've talked about it before, but sometimes you just turn into a fan. I mean, he threw his chest pass, touchdown adult. He defiled back, but he's lifting the ball to guys, making plays with his feet.
Starting point is 00:24:30 I'm yelling in my head this slide, but he's running guys over. It's so much fun to play with that dude. It's really a privilege, and I hope I get to play with him as long as I possibly can. Heard hierarchy, paying a lot of respect, but I would still say this about Buffalo. We are so enamored and rightly so on Josh Allen. Their defense right now, lost in that Lions win was Detroit marked up and down the field, too. I don't know if you can win a Super Bowl with this defense. Like, it's one thing.
Starting point is 00:25:04 like Baltimore can be susceptible to the deep ball. But Matt Stafford was never sacked against Buffalo, and Detroit, in this loss, would have won 99 out of 100 games by scoring as much as they did and moving the ball as effortlessly as they did. The good news is the bills won't be playing indoors in the postseason and the AFC, right? They'll either be at home or going to perhaps Kansas City, which doesn't have nearly the offense that the Lions or the Rams do. So, I mean, I don't expect Kansas City to do this to Allen and the bill's defense in the postseason.
Starting point is 00:25:40 Do you? I don't think they're capable of it. I just think when I look at Detroit and Buffalo, it was wildly entertaining. Yeah. But my takeaway was that that doesn't play in February. At some point, you have to make stops. Probably. If you're doing a quarterback pyramid, Colin, is Josh Allen on his own tier above everyone else based on this season?
Starting point is 00:26:03 Forget about historical just this season. Yes, I think he's different than everybody. Yes, I do. So it's Josh Allen and the next tier's like Lamar, Burrough, I guess, Mahomes. Yeah, I mean, Mulhomes continues to be the best late game, fourth down, goal line quarterback, arguably in league history. So we can't just have recency bias. He doesn't have good tackles in Kansas City. They're still making it up as they go at wide receiver.
Starting point is 00:26:31 So, I mean, he's, he's, this is, by the way, the best supporting cast Josh has ever had, I could argue, this is the weakest supporting cast Mahomes has ever had. I mean, arguably, because Travis Kelsey's now way out of his prime. They can't get tackle right. Well, they got Hollywood Brown coming back this week, guys. Get excited, Carson Wentz. He's something. He's something.
Starting point is 00:26:52 Maybe? I don't think he's much. But Josh Allen, just unbelievable season. Bills are, oh my gosh, is that right? 14-point favorites against the Patriots at home on Sunday afternoon. That should be a fun one. Next up, we got to go back to the Eagles. This heated sideline confrontation.
Starting point is 00:27:08 So the Jalen Carter situation, he got a penalty for slapping a Steelers player on the head. And you can see Jailen Carter, there 98 laughing on the screen. Nick Siriani wants to go talk to him. And the defensive line coach hurt is like, no, Nick, you're not talking to him. Like he's like a bodyguard protecting the player. Colin, this was bizarre. Oh, yeah. I think this is troubling.
Starting point is 00:27:29 Eagles fans are like, oh, it's no big deal, nothing. Anyway, here's Nick Siriani talking about it. As Jalen was coming off the field, I was kind of getting after him there. And, you know, I think that there was part of me that wanted to go back. And then I went back. And what Clint was saying is, like, coach, I got it. I got it. I've already handled it.
Starting point is 00:27:51 And knowing, you know, and so I had said something to him, Clint had said something to him. And it wasn't, you know, knowing Clint and how he's coached him for the past, you know, half a year that he's been here, I knew we had it. And so then, you know, it kind of went away. Do the players and other coaches there respect Siriani? Well, it's interesting. Would you do that to Belichick or Andy Reed? Would you do that?
Starting point is 00:28:16 Would you do it to Kyle Shanahan? Would you do it to McVeigh? I mean, I think it, honestly, when I see this stuff, you would not do that to a head coach, because the great head coach is you fear. You're not doing that, Sean Payton. It's like a teacher. You fear the teacher.
Starting point is 00:28:29 The sub comes in. It's goof off time. They say no sub. This is Nick Siriani. the head coach of a pretty damn good Eagles team. And the worst part is Carter's like laughing like, I don't want to talk to this guy. Look at him. Look at his face.
Starting point is 00:28:40 He's like, eh, whatever. I just find that so disrespectful. And I know Eagles fans can poo-poo this as much ado about nothing. That's a head coach. I know. Just not the way it's not the way it should. I mean, again, I think coaches sometimes have to back off. Like, sometimes, you know, you see some of these college coaches throwing headsets and it's like chill out.
Starting point is 00:29:02 Yeah. But I think in. Just people that are willing to do that to a head coach. Confront him, stand in his way. What does it tell you? Not great. Eagles commanders this week. This is interesting.
Starting point is 00:29:15 I saw that line. Would you make of it? Well, I would tell you I already bet the commanders, but I don't know what's up with AJ Brown. Like if he doesn't play, it's automatically fade to Eagles. Like, our offense is just so much worse without him. Final story, Colin, oh boy, here we go. Mike McCarthy has had a lot to deal with this season in Dallas.
Starting point is 00:29:33 Yes. the DAC injury. However, Dallas has turned it around, winning three of four, beating a bunch of bad teams in his weekly radio appearance with local Dallas radio. Jerry Jones talked about McCarthy and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, potentially staying saying, I think you're beginning to see the best of Mike Zimmer. But maybe the best is still ahead of us. McCarthy has shown that his team can handle adversity. I give them both high grades this year.
Starting point is 00:30:01 Ha! We said this three weeks ago. Oh my gosh. Mike McCarthy won a Super Bowl. When? Did TikTok exist back there? Is that your timeline? It's been a million years? I don't even know if the iPhone exists.
Starting point is 00:30:16 I'm kidding about the iPhone. But that was forever ago. I don't want to hear that. What have you done for me lately? Well, okay. Yeah. But I don't think anybody. By the way, 68 years old, Colin.
Starting point is 00:30:26 You'll be 69 in June. All right. Well, there's nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with. I'm not an age. Just putting that out there. All right. Do you see anything worth bringing these guys back?
Starting point is 00:30:35 Well, I don't think Mike McCarthy's a bad coach. I think offensively, I've said this before. They need to get a running back, another weapon, probably an interior offensive lineman. They need to move Micah and then draft another edge rusher. It's a great edge rusher year. If the Cowboys could get two first round picks, get a running back, replace Micah on the edge, and then go get DAC weapons. I don't think they're miles away, but I don't think they have the courage to do what's available.
Starting point is 00:31:01 Like I think Mike Vrable's a better coach than Mike McCarthy. I don't think they'd do it. I think they should trade Micah and get two first round picks. I don't think they'd do it. I think there's a path to success for almost everybody in the league, not name the Chicago Bears. I don't think Jerry's got the guts or the want to do it. That list you just rattled off of what they need to do, that's about as long as my 11-year-old's Christmas list. Okay?
Starting point is 00:31:23 All the stuff Dallas has to do to get back to relevant? I don't even think they're a 500 team next year. Oh, well? I mean, again, let's remember, DAC is making. all of the money, Colin. So you're kind of hamstrung with what you can do. By the way, we're, what, eight days after Christmas and Jerry Jones is doing radio interviews?
Starting point is 00:31:40 What? Come on, man, you're an owner. J-Mack with the News. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Heard Lye News. So listen, I root for young quarterbacks, believe it or not, because as we witnessed this weekend,
Starting point is 00:31:56 when the quarterback play is good, football's good. Nobody wants to watch Will Levis and the Titans. Like it's not fun. That's not what I want to watch. And so there's a headline today in Miami, one of the headlines is Tua proves he isn't the Dolphins franchise quarterback and a loss of the Texans. So when I'm tough on a Tim Tebow, I was tough on him, or tough on a Brock Purdy, or I'm tough on Tua. It's not because I'm a bully. Anytime you have to qualify things for a quarterback, you can't pay him big money.
Starting point is 00:32:30 You can't have ifs. Josh Allen's great, period. Matt Stafford's great, period. With Tua, if it's over 70 degrees, if he's healthy, if he has the fastest receiving tandem in the league, if he has an offensive coach, he's an if quarterback. Same with Brock Purdy. If Trent Williams is there. If McCaffrey's healthy. If he's got a Hall of Fame roster.
Starting point is 00:33:00 if it's not raining. That's an if quarterback. So Brian Flores, by the way, was a meanie, right? Everybody said, Brian Flores, he was too rough on him. But was he right? Mike McDaniels, the media loves him. Maybe because he's about the size of a sports rider. He's nice.
Starting point is 00:33:22 Mike McDaniel is there. He's supportive. He's nice. They can't beat good teams. Mike McDaniel can't beat good teams. teams and Tua can't play in the cold. And so even though Brian Flores was rough around the edges, we got to stop pretending this Tua thing is anything more than it is. He is an if quarterback.
Starting point is 00:33:44 If it's warm, if they're at home, if he gets protection, if he's healthy, if he's got McDaniel's playbook. But I watched them against the Texans. It's all dink and dunk. You're starting to see the best quarterbacks as the weather gets a little cold, a little frothy. The best quarterbacks are separating now. I mean, again, Matt Stafford, he's great. You're not doing a bunch of ifs. I mean, yeah, he is older, so you can't have four your starting offensive linemen out.
Starting point is 00:34:11 You can't have cluster injuries. But when you're considering signing Brock Purdy to big money, ask yourself, is he great? If, if the weather's ideal, if Christian McAfreth is healthy, if Kyle Schaeffreth. is healthy. If Kyle Shanahan's coach. I've said this about Dak. He is great. If he has the best offensive line in the league, and if
Starting point is 00:34:38 he has a top two or three running back Zeke, that's the only time that we've gone, wow. Otherwise, I watch Dallas Cowboys now. Dak's obviously better than Cooper Rush. But, Jay Mack, you tell me, I watch the Cowboys play now. How much better are they? I mean, Cooper Rush is winning games.
Starting point is 00:34:54 Cooper Rush beats Carolina. Jack would beat Carolina. So just ask yourself, if you want to pay a quarterback $60 million, is he an if quarterback? And I think Tua is. I thought he had a rough game against the Texans. The Texans are not a great team. They've regressed from last year, and here was Tua after.
Starting point is 00:35:15 I got to protect the ball. I got to play a better ball for our guys, especially in a situation where the team's counting on me to go and drive our offense down to potentially. potentially tie the game up, and that's not what I did. And, you know, that's not how you win games in this league. I just need to be better in all aspects with that. It's nothing against Brock.
Starting point is 00:35:41 It's nothing against Dak. It's nothing against Purdy. It's nothing against Tua. But I always ask myself, is he an if, or is he just great? Great, I'll pay a $55 million up. The more ifs I get, okay, now we're in the 40s. or now we're in the 30s. I love Sam Darnold.
Starting point is 00:35:58 But if he got a defensive coach, he wouldn't be the same player. Sam Darnold's a very, very high-end if quarterback. If he gets Shane Steichen and Indy, he'd win. If he has Kevin O'Connell, Justin Jefferson, he'd win. But if you gave him the Jets mess or Carolina's mess, he would struggle because I've seen it. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern,
Starting point is 00:36:21 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, it's us, the Jonas Brothers. And guess what? We have some big news. What's the news? Huge news. We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas. We invented a podcast?
Starting point is 00:36:33 Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it.
Starting point is 00:36:49 And, well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers. This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, people could call in and say, hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your
Starting point is 00:37:19 podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert smigel and friends on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas.
Starting point is 00:37:55 And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows. Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup,
Starting point is 00:38:23 he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court licking his fingers while he got the ball. Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah.
Starting point is 00:38:46 You figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This week on Crimless, we're joined by our first ever guest. Sorry, our first ever human guest. I don't think I could be in the same room with Shamrock the pair. I'd be too nervous. That's right.
Starting point is 00:39:12 The very funny Will Farrell joins Rory Scovel and me, Josh Dean, for an episode dedicated to the many crimes committed by people also named Will Farrell. They called to his fellow officer for the nippers. What are the nippers? Very good question. No, I was thinking, would that be a good name for like a salad dressing? Simple assault. And it's a play on word, salt?
Starting point is 00:39:34 Maybe not. I say we invest and we see. There's only one way to know. This did not amuse the cops. By the way, normally the cops are amused, but this did not abuse the cops. Will even comes clean about some of his, own crimes. I didn't get caught. You know why? If you don't want to be suspected of anything,
Starting point is 00:39:54 you whistle as you walk. Listen to crime lists on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Here's something that should not be as complicated as it is, getting a racist statue removed. And here's something that should be a whole lot easier than it is, getting a new one put up in its place. As long as there's a politics of race in America, there's going to be a politics of remembering the civil war. To get to school, I had to go down. Robert Lee Boulevard. Get to the grocery store. I had to go down Jefferson Davis Parkway.
Starting point is 00:40:26 If you're an historian and you leave out half of what the history is, you're not doing your job. I'm Akila Hughes. In Rebel Spirit, season two goes deep on both of those things. The fights, the politics, the people who won, and my personal campaign to add something to the Kentucky State House that's actually worth the wall space. We are more than our bodies. We contain essence.
Starting point is 00:40:48 We contain spirit. How do you represent that? They are just fueling a fire that is really catching. You'll see what I mean. Listen to Rebel Spirit Season 2 on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Fox College Hoops Friday takes over prime time as St. John's Rip Bidino leads the Red Storm against Providence. In a big East battle, it all tips off Friday at 8 Eastern on Fox. Well, when the NFL decided to expand to 17 games in 18 games.
Starting point is 00:41:23 weeks. And they're going to expand to 18 games and 19 weeks. In fact, 20, they'll probably add another buy. So the league now is becoming about attrition more than ever. So I grew up. It was 14 games forever. And then it was 16 games. And now it's 17 games. And so this league now is about pacing. It's about attrition. It's about many teams get good after a mid to late season by. So if you go to the last three seasons, those are the three years when the NFL has had 17 games and the winners of the Super Bowl are Kansas City, Kansas City, and the Rams. And they all got really good late and they struggled at some point early or in the middle of the season. So again, Detroit won September and October. They are falling apart. I think they're the third best team
Starting point is 00:42:20 in their division this morning. I think Green Bay is better this morning, healthier and better. I think Minnesota right now this second is better slightly. Detroit is beat up. The defense is a mess. They can only win by shootout now.
Starting point is 00:42:37 Dan Campbell, I think, is getting a little edgier and riskier because he knows he can't make stops. That onside kick call, that's just desperation. You're not doing that if you trust your defense. and it's like a major in golf. You don't win majors on Thursday and Friday.
Starting point is 00:42:53 You win them on the weekends. Often on Sunday. September and October are not winning this league. If you go to last year, who got hot late? Packers, Lions, Rams, Chiefs. So it is about timing as we've expanded this season. It's not like this in college football. And the NFL, the margins are tight.
Starting point is 00:43:11 And Detroit early looked like Alabama was saving. They were blowing teams out. Remember, who did this last year? Who got hot last year? year early to mid. It was Baltimore. Kansas City got hot late. Okay. This year, Detroit hot early. Go look at their injury list. It's insane. And I think it's changing the perception of the staff that they know they have to take more risks. Offensively, defensively special teams. So this is a December and January league,
Starting point is 00:43:43 and I don't think Detroit right now, I think they got multiple issues. And Dan Campbell's answer is, We've got to be tougher. He was on local radio. You went 11 in a row, you know, and you lose, and then the sky falls. You get used to eating fillet, and I'm talking to all of us. And, well, everything's good. Life's good, you know. But you forgot what it was like when he had nothing and he ate your fucking molded bread.
Starting point is 00:44:07 Sometimes you've got to get punched in the mouth and remember what it used to be like to really appreciate where you are. And we'll do that, I promise you. If it's the other way defensively, we give up 700 yards, and we win by one point, You're going to see a smile from my ear to ear. Okay. I appreciate the alpha.
Starting point is 00:44:25 But the truth is, they got backups playing everywhere. And if you face Josh Allen or Green Bay's offense or now Minnesota's offense or the Rams offense and you're using backups, they're backups for a reason. I mean, I love Dan Campbell. But the answer is not always, try harder, be tougher. They're running out of players. There's a reason there's guys that are backups are on the scout team. They're just not as good.
Starting point is 00:44:49 And so now I saved it to the end of the hour. J-MAC, I said, 11 people in America outside of Atlanta watch the Raiders and the Falcons. It was not good. We're all asking the same question, though. You're asking this this morning. Why are they still playing Kirk Cousin? So Atlanta won but could have lost on the final play. And it shouldn't have been that close because the Raiders right now, they're in, you know, it's the worst team in the league.
Starting point is 00:45:12 So here's the reason. Because Atlanta knows that if they play Michael Pennock, Kirk Cousins, they can never go back to him. And they paid like $180 million. The staff and the front office convinced Arthur Blank to pay $180 million. And now Arthur Blank's saying, we're like 13 games into this thing. Now, I told you, my prediction, I was very pro-Kirk cousins.
Starting point is 00:45:42 I said, I think he'll last until Thanksgiving year two. Then it's Pennix. He ended up last on about 10-11 games. So he lasted the half, not the year and a half. That was my take is, I mean, Aaron Rogers, for the record, last month, has played his best football. He's older than Kirk Cousin, same injury. So Aaron's actually played very well. I think that's what I thought I would say.
Starting point is 00:46:04 Slow, slow, slow, slow, he'll be fine. Second year, he's just, it doesn't work. But this happens all the time. So they talked Arthur Blank into writing that check. Because Arthur Blank's like, are we going to draft a quarterback? why pay for a quarter? I mean, they had this thing. They were going to draft the quarterback. And so, okay, we'll do it.
Starting point is 00:46:23 Well, so now you have got to exhaust every last start. Last night, Kirk Cousins had 11 completions. Now, they won the game. But I think if you look at Atlanta's schedule, they're only a game back at Tampa, and they have the tiebreaker because they beat the bucks twice. So I think if Atlanta would have lost, they would have gone to panics.
Starting point is 00:46:45 But because they won, and they're only a game. back and if you look at Atlanta's remaining schedule, it looks like Giants, Carolina are wins, Washington's a tough one. Whereas Tampa's got to go to Dallas and then, you know, New Orleans historically, you know, New Orleans is New Orleans. They can be tough. I think Atlanta is going to make a change, but I think the reason we're all asking why Kirk Cousins are not panics is because they asked the owner to write a huge check and they wanted to just make sure there is nothing. nothing left in the tank. And Rahim Morris had been very
Starting point is 00:47:21 defiant defending Kirk Cousins, but after last night's performance, he was not. Here's... Yeah, here's Rahim. He's got to play better, and, you know, obviously, you got to go back, got to be a look at everything, but, you know, he wants to play better, he's got to play better, we've got to find a way
Starting point is 00:47:37 to give him to play better, and obviously we'll get to work tomorrow, and that's a part of our process, right? You go, you look at the tape, you review, with the people that needs to be reviewed with. You know, we get all the coordinators in the room, we'll talk with everybody and we got to play better at the quarterback position so last five games kirk cousins has one touchdown and five picks it's done i just it's done and that that's okay his passer ratings like below 65 but atlanta's not a super bowl team they're not and they knew it they're not
Starting point is 00:48:05 a super bowl team and so you know again this is about the big picture but don't kid yourself in this league these billionaire owners do not like to write 180 million dollar I mean, when Sean McVey was in less need, we're pleading with Stan Cronkey, the first or second richest owner in the league, to go get Matt Stafford. And they said, we'll be paying Stafford and Jared Gough. It seems obvious. Like, Stafford's great. Goff's very good. Stan Cronkey's rich, but Stan Cronkey has to be convinced.
Starting point is 00:48:39 So I'm going to be paying Goff's Detroit salary and he better be good. So Stafford wins a Super Bowl, you're good. because Gough got to a Super Bowl. Stafford got there and won and was great. The no look past a Cooper Cup. So all this stuff comes down to Atlanta's like, okay, we talked this guy, Arthur Blank, and they're writing this gigantic check. We've got to make sure.
Starting point is 00:48:58 We got to make sure. And I'm surprised. I am. I'm actually surprised. Aaron Rogers has been as good as he's been the last two to three weeks, and Kirk Cousins has been as bad as he's been the last month. A little surprised by it. Not shock, but a little surprised.
Starting point is 00:49:14 All right, Jay Mack. Eric B. Enemy and Nick Wright stopped by today. I want to go back to the Chicago Bears. We talked about this at the top of the show. It's funny because I think there are three franchises in the league that are broken. Bears, Jets, Giants. Now, I think of those teams, the Jets have the best players. The Jets now have a left tackle.
Starting point is 00:49:34 They have two receivers, a running back. I like their defensive front. Aaron now playing better, not great. Corners are excellent. So I was asking this morning, I texted a friend in the NFL. I said, if I'm Mike Vrable, because he's the best candidate, the Jets have the best collection of players.
Starting point is 00:49:55 Many are not even paying yet. Breast Hall and Garrett Wilson, Sauce Gardner, you're still years away from paying them. The Giants have the greatest history. So the Jets have the best players. The Giants have the best blue-blood history. The Bears have the most talented quarterback. So I was asking an executive in the league,
Starting point is 00:50:17 you're Mike Frable, and I think he's the number one candidate if the Giants let go of Brian Dable. Would you lean into the Giants' history and their revenue flow, the Jets roster, or the Bears quarterback? Okay. I hate to answer a question with a question, but what is Aaron Rogers doing? Is he returning to the Jets or not? Yeah, he'll return for another year. Okay. And we're cutting in New York, for the Giants, we're cutting the quarterback Daniel Jones. So he's gone. Okay. Yeah, so the Giants have to find a quarterback. I can't believe I've got to admit this. The Giants have to find a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:50:52 The Jets have one for a year, maybe two. And the Bears have one, but they have more dysfunction than the Jets or the Giants. They don't have the Giants history, and they don't have the Jets roster. So ask yourself as a listener or viewer. You are the coach. Chicago has a star quarterback, but they're the biggest mess. The Jets have Aaron playing well now, But it's Aaron, and the roster, however, is very good.
Starting point is 00:51:20 It's a good roster. Yeah, but Rogers trumps all that because you got to deal with that guy. He's a headache and nonsense. And then, you know, is he going to leave in a year and you're starting over? Robert Sala had to. Mike Vrable will run the franchise. Aaron will lose. Rogers is going to do his Joe Rogan podcast and go on the former punter show and say stuff.
Starting point is 00:51:40 I don't want any part of that. For me, it would be between Chicago and New York. Which New York? The Giants. I don't want to go. Why would you want to go to the Jets? Who's the GM? What's going on with Rogers?
Starting point is 00:51:53 Those are unanswered questions. I know Chicago, I got a lot of dudes. I got a great lineup. Owner seems to be staying out of it. The Giants owner, Mara, kind of looked. I've been told. Got involved in the room. You saw the video on Hard Knots.
Starting point is 00:52:05 I've been told. Mara wants to keep Daibol. The concern now is the locker room is quit. Now, I'm not saying it has, but you watch that game. Well, there's a report that the GM and the coach are not exactly a package deal. When you see that stuff, it's coming from somebody. I'm sure Daible, just like the Atlanta Falcons, is in self-preservation mode. Hey, you guys want to jump the GM?
Starting point is 00:52:28 Fine, fine, fine, fine. I'm good here. Vrable and Belichick, I'm told, both believe the Giants should retain Daible. Belichick thinks that I've been told in Vrable. They both think Daible's not the problem. So how's this? I would lean slightly Giants because you get one of the top two picks. But I'm not taking that without seeing what happens to the Eagles in the postseason.
Starting point is 00:52:51 What's going on in Atlanta? Is that job going to come open? Has Rahim Morris screwed this up enough? Ask yourself this. Oh, I got a good idea on the Giants. Move down. Don't take a quarterback. Next.
