Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:01:06 A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes,
Starting point is 00:01:24 creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok. On the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:41 For 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84's big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians,
Starting point is 00:01:54 and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. We're listening to Fox Sports Radio. All right, welcome back to The HARD.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Hour number three. I'm sorry, hour number two of a three-hour tour. It's going so fast, Jay Mack, that I thought it was hour number three. It is hour number two. I'm Chris Broussard. He's Jason McIntyre. We're in for Colin Cowher, who is on his way somewhere, I guess, Jay Mack. And about to enjoy a long weekend.
Starting point is 00:02:58 So good for him. I hope he has a ball. and that's our man. So we're honored to be filling in for him live from the Fox Sports Radio Studios and we are having a ball. All right, let's go to football for a moment, J.MAC. You brought up in our interview last hour
Starting point is 00:03:18 with E. From Salam that it's been a rough few weeks for Lamar Jackson. And let me recap. And you kind of dismissed it as what, a network, a TV show poll or something like that. What was it? Was that wrong? I'm about to, yes, you were wrong.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Okay. Because a TV show poll would presumably be a poll of fans, a poll maybe of media. Okay. A poll of reporters from that network. This was not that. This was a poll of 50 plus executives in the NFL, coaches in the, NFL, scouts and players in the NFL. Lamar Jackson's peers, and they did not have him in the top 10 of quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:04:12 All right, I agree with you, travesty. Should have been ahead of Dak Prescott, should have been ahead of Deshaun Watson, who we haven't seen on the football field in over a year. All right. But there was that. And then I was stunned. to see Lamar Jackson get challenged on Twitter the way he did from Bernard Pollard.
Starting point is 00:04:37 Now, Bernard Pollard was no Hall of Famer. He was no pro-bowler. He was a hard hitter. Yeah, he was a hard hitter. And he was a good player. He started for the Ravens when they won the Super Bowl. So he's not some chump, right? But still, I was surprised because usually
Starting point is 00:04:57 players and even former players defend Lamar Jackson. Even if inside they may feel like, okay, he does have his deficiencies, this and that, people go out of their way to praise him, all right, and defend him. And so for Bernard Pollard to go out, it was a bit surprising for me to me.
Starting point is 00:05:18 And what he said, J. Mack, was that he's got to be better throwing from the pocket. And, you know, he didn't say it the right way, but it was something Lamar could learn. He was like, why everybody understands the way he plays is not sustainable just because of age or potentially injury. And so they need to be talking about him staying in the pocket and being more of a quote unquote traditional quarterback.
Starting point is 00:05:44 And he then throughout, you mentioned earlier when we talked to Ephraim, they got to get him some top flight receivers. Well, they've tried. And I get it. They haven't gone. They haven't been able to get a Tyreek Hill in the building. or DeAndre Hopkins to listen to him. But they have reached out to good receivers,
Starting point is 00:06:02 and they've been turned down, okay? Because I'm with you. Stefan Diggs worked wonders for Josh Allen. DeAndre Hopkins worked wonders for Kyler Murray. So you are right in that they need to get this young quarterback a great receiver. They went after T.Y. Hilton. He turned down more money.
Starting point is 00:06:21 Okay, okay, he's not all pro. But still, the fact, that makes it worse. No, it doesn't. You got average receivers, good receivers, saying thanks, but no thanks. I'll take less money to go to Indianapolis and play with Carson Wentz. You had Kenny Ghaladay choosing the Giants.
Starting point is 00:06:41 Now, I know they offered him more money, but the Giants and Daniel Jones over Baltimore. You had Ju- Well, wait a minute. He's not choosing Daniel Jones over Lamar Jackson. Like he's choosing New York City and a lot of money over Baltimore and I don't know if Baltimore offered him.
Starting point is 00:06:57 Like, don't say he picked Daniel Jones. Take Kenny Galladay out. I don't necessarily agree with you, but take him out because they did offer him more money. Ty Wight Hilton turned down more money. Jujo Smith-Schuster turned down more money from Baltimore to stay with an aged Ben Rothensberger. And then Hollywood Brown, his boy, Lamar's boy, left to go to Arizona. wanted to trade. And so this is my question.
Starting point is 00:07:30 Because I am a Lamar fan, but I'm also objective. And this is what I want to ask you. Is the shine, when you look at all this stuff, somebody challenging him on Twitter, players not wanting to go there. Well, not somebody. I mean, a former Ravens Super Bowl champion. Whoopty damn do.
Starting point is 00:07:50 Oh, so we just go pooh-poo. How many guys challenge you on Twitter a day? Do you care? this is a football player or ex-football player. That's all I'm saying. Usually they've defended him. Don't compare an ex-professional athlete to Joe Schmoe who works as an office manager. It's not the same when you're talking about sports.
Starting point is 00:08:10 Let's just keep it real. And you got these receivers that didn't want to play there. And you've got him not being ranked in the top 10. What are your thoughts on this, J-Mack? Has some of the shine or the shine? Come off of Action Jackson. Absolutely not. The shine is not off.
Starting point is 00:08:29 If anything, he's ascending. The guy's 24 years old. Let me just remind the unwashed masses out there, the guys who come at me on social media. Oh, Lamar Jackson stinks. The guys you just dis. He can't be a running quarterback. I just want to note to everybody. Lamar Jackson started halfway through his rookie year, ended up getting the team to the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:08:48 Second year was the MVP of the league, sat out week 16. third year sat out week 16 and the only injury he's gotten for a quarterback who runs a little more than Josh Allen, by the way. Lamar Jackson has never been injured running the football. The one injury he suffered last year with the ankle in the pocket, he was trying, you know, he was trying to elude a defender because his offensive line was garbage. He took the most sacks last year because of the injuries. And that's how he suffered the ankle injury. So I know he looks like he could suffer a lot of injuries because he runs, but so does Josh Allen.
Starting point is 00:09:20 So did Russell Wilson. These guys are smart. They know how to elude defenders and go down early. Lamar Jackson's running ability is not a hindrance. If anything, it's a positive. I don't think I would offer him Deshawn Watson fully guaranteed contract. I don't think he gets Josh Allen money. I don't think he gets Patrick Mahomes money.
Starting point is 00:09:39 But I definitely think. Well, he hasn't accomplished. He hasn't accomplished what Patrick Mahomes. That's not how it works. It's usually last man up. It doesn't matter. Well, that's bad business. Jimmy Garapolo hadn't accomplished Jack.
Starting point is 00:09:49 And he became the highest paid. quarterback ever. And it's bad business. And now they're sitting on the most expensive backup in NFL history. But Jay Mack, you know how it works. Well, that's bad business. Is that about what you've done? If you're in top level quarterback and your time is now, you generally become the highest pay. Deshawn Watson just got the worst quarterback contract or best, defending how you look at it in NFL history. Is that the now set in the market? The Cleveland Browns are morons. That's what they are. You can take Deshawn out. I'm with you on that one. Josh Allen deserved the money. Josh Allen has done a lot. He's gotten the bills to...
Starting point is 00:10:22 He hadn't done as much as Lamar Jackson? The Buffalo Bills have been to the conference championship. The Buffalo Bills have been to the playoffs. Josh Allen's an MVP contender. He's right here with Lamar Allen. Lamar Jackson's an MVP. Chris, have you looked at the... Yes, I'm aware of that.
Starting point is 00:10:36 Have you looked at the odds? The bills are the Super Bowl favorites. Josh Allen is the MVP favorite. It's undeniable. So he's worth more than Lamar Jackson. Number two, he's not Patrick Mahomes. We don't even need to go into that. Dak Prescott is the guy who really makes my
Starting point is 00:10:51 blood bubble. This guy has the same amount of playoff wins as Lamar. He has no MVP to his name. And let's be realistic, Dat Prescott is a good, not great quarterback. Lamar Jackson, if you look at the advanced metrics, which I use to gamble, and Lamar Jackson is a top 10 quarterback, undeniably. This is not even up for discussion. I don't care if you don't like the cut of his jib when he's throwing the ball in the pocket. The guy is a 66% completion guy as an MVP, 64, then 64. He's a good pocket passer. Is he great? No, he's not Patrick Mahomes. He's never going to be. But good luck trying to lowball this guy and then find another quarterback after Lamar Jackson. I think you need to pay him at least Dak Prescott money. I would say more, a little more than Dak. And then you
Starting point is 00:11:35 go on with your life and you go back to being one of the five best teams in the AFC and in the Super Bowl hunt. Well, look, I agree with some of what you said. I do think Lamar Jackson should have been on that top 10 list. I think he's He has been great. But when you say he's ascending, you're just wrong. Now, hopefully he ascends this year. But the last two years, since he won his MVP, he has declined in essentially every category
Starting point is 00:12:09 passing and rushing the football. And this is why I'm saying to Lamar, I hope he hears me. I've been saying it on TV. I've been saying it on radio. I've been saying it on podcast. Lamar, get your money. Because J-Mack, if you don't think his style of play
Starting point is 00:12:31 puts him in harm's way more than a typical drop-back passer, I don't know what to tell you. And you're right, he has, he's done a great job of eluding the big hits for the most part and avoiding injuries running the football. But that style is not a long-term style. Because when you lose a half a second, or I should say a half a tenth of a second, or a tenth of a second, two-thirds of a second, off your 40 time.
Starting point is 00:13:03 Guess what? Those shots that you were able to avoid, all of a sudden, they're connected. Let me just remind you. And he is half the side. We saw what running the football did to Cam Newton. He's twice as big as long. He was a battering ram, dude. Lamar Jackson is not.
Starting point is 00:13:18 Not a battering ram. No, he's not, but he's also not nearly as big as cam. Fair enough. There's a reason we haven't seen running quarterbacks last as long. This is the evolution of quarterbacks, I would argue. It's not the evolution. Look at most of the other quarterbacks. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:34 They throw the football more often. You picture Russell Wilson, he's sliding all the time. Josh Wilson, again, much bigger than Lamar. And this is, so that's all I'm saying. That's why Pollyton, and I'm not endorsing everything he said. because I thought he was crazy on some of his comments. But Lamar does have, they have to throw it more because he already isn't running as much
Starting point is 00:13:57 or as effectively as he used to. I want to remind you of the last time Greg Roman was winning an offense. It was in San Francisco. A guy by the name of Colin Kaepernick comes in, takes the league by storm. Colin Kaepernick, I knew you, I still have visions. He won me so much money in San Francisco against the Packers. Money, money. It always comes back.
Starting point is 00:14:16 I'm a gambling guy for Fox. but I'll never forget Kaepernick torching Green Bay in the playoffs. I think back-to-back years, and it was like, holy cow, Colin Kaepernick is the future kind of quarterback in this league. You remember Bill Pollyan, former Colts GM went on and was like, oh, yeah, Colin Kaepernick's an all-time great already. But guess what? Greg Roman was the offensive coordinator, and after three years,
Starting point is 00:14:36 the league kind of sort of figured out the offense. And Kaepernick did not have an off-speed pitch, aka could not win from the pocket. We're not there with Lamar Jackson, but this is your first. five of Greg Roman and Lamar Jackson. Guess what? When you look around the league, and as I said, other quarterbacks have added a receiver.
Starting point is 00:14:56 You know, I've been bagging on Tua Tungo Viloa for a while. He just added Tyree Kill. So, Tua's probably going to improve and everybody's going to say, see, Tua is great. Well, no bleep, Sherlock. He just got Tyree Kill. You look at Lamar Jackson, you kind of do that shrug emoji. Have they not tried, J.Mack?
Starting point is 00:15:11 But they haven't tried to get a Tyree Kill? They haven't tried to get a D'Andre Hopkins. These are top 10 receivers, bro. You don't think they would want to get one of those guys? Spend the frigging money. Back up the Brinks. Buffalo did it from Stefan Diggs and Josh Allen as a superstar now. Did they have the money to offer, Tyreek Hill?
Starting point is 00:15:26 Make the money. Make it happen. You got Lamar on the rookie deal. Look, that's revisionist history, Jay, man. And I'm with you on trying to get him a big-time receiver. I've been saying that for almost two years. But they have tried to bring in better receivers and dudes didn't want to come. And one of their guys walked.
Starting point is 00:15:45 and Hollywood Brown now is defending Lamar and that's his friend. You could be friends and not want to play with a guy. But he left. There was no reason for him to leave. Well, he did go to college with Kyla Marie. They were buddies. He's played for a few years with Lamar.
Starting point is 00:16:02 I'm sure they're buddies too. He chose Kyler because he thinks he throws the ball better. Let's just keep it real. I like Lamar too. I like Lamar too, but he's got to improve in his past. And if you're not saying that, then you're not doing them any faith. I think we all have to improve it something, Chris. Like, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:22 Of course, Lamar needs a little to be better at passing. Remember, Josh Allen came into the league as a frigging project. That's your, we all have to improve. Yeah, Josh Allen improved and got the bag. I need to eat a little bit. I need to cut down on the fried foods. Let's compare that to Lamar Jackson being a better path. By the way.
Starting point is 00:16:39 And you, from what I hear, need to work on your jump shot. Oh, geez. Well, by the way, it's good thing you brought that up. around in the box sports. By the way, Fox Sports will have a team in the media game at the Super Bowl in January or February, in Arizona, yeah. So I said, I don't think Chris Bussard has hung up the sneakers. He's just got to get in shape, work on the cardio, and then he'll beat it.
Starting point is 00:17:01 I play once in about three or four years. Oh, my gosh. We'll see. Maybe. All right. Rumor has it, J. Mack, that Kyrie wants to stay in Brooklyn, with or without KD. We'll get into that next with Brian Lewis from the New York Post. He joins us. Chris Bruce R and J. Mack, in for Colin. This is The Herd.
Starting point is 00:17:19 Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the look back at it
Starting point is 00:19:14 podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it, including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84's big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. So. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:19:50 Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversational. with so many incredible guests. I'm talking.
Starting point is 00:20:15 Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses.
Starting point is 00:20:34 Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now.
Starting point is 00:21:02 All right, I'm Chris Brousard. He's Jason McIntyre and you are listening to The Herd. We are in, of course, for Colin Cowherd. Our next guest covers the New York Post or works for the New York Post covering the Brooklyn Nets. Longtime Beat Rider goes back almost three decades with me. My man, Brian Lewis. What's up, brother? Is Brian there? Well, we'll get that, Jay Mack. We'll have Brian Lewis coming in.
Starting point is 00:21:32 Now, his story has started a big, big firestorm, this whole Kyrie Irving content on staying. Chris, the one thing I'll say about stories that leak out in July. Everything feels like it's coming out from a certain camp for a certain reason. Would you agree with that? Yeah, and especially today, really more than ever, because, and by today, I mean, you know, at this point in time, because you are seeing so many reporters with different stories, opposite stories, right? One is saying Kyrie wants to go to the Lakers.
Starting point is 00:22:08 Another saying he wants to stay. One is saying Kevin Durant, you know, doesn't want to. play with Kyrie. One is saying he does. You're seeing so many contradictory reports, and to your point, that shows you that stuff is leaking for a reason. Different camps are putting spins
Starting point is 00:22:25 out to get their story out. After that Jeannie Bus tweet basically about LeBron, the veiled tweet. The one about Kobe? Yes. It was pretty clear to me that the vibe was sorry LeBron, I'm not giving up two future picks. The team
Starting point is 00:22:41 matters more than your legacy. Okay? We're not doing that deal for Westbrook for Kyrie. We're not giving up the two picks. So then what you see is a few days later, the Brian story, Kyrie, I'm fine staying in Brooklyn, which is essentially saying to the Lakers, hey, you guys are struck with Westbrook unless you ante up and get the picks. So you can read this so many different ways. And I'm not saying Brian was used or anything like that because I do know Brian. I worked at a newspaper in the New York City area.
Starting point is 00:23:06 And I know he's a credible reporter knows his stuff. has covered the NBA for a while. It's like, you know, okay, so Kyrie wants to stay all of a sudden when he, remember when he run on the red carpet? It was, I think, at the BET Awards. And he was asked, like, do you want to stay? And he like deferred the question. To his agent. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:26 His stepmom. Yeah. All right, we got Brian on the line. Let's bring him in. Brian Lewis, New York Post, Brooklyn Nets, beat writer. Brian, how are you? All right. How are you doing? Excellent. We're good. You're on with me and Jay Mack. We were just talking about your story. Big story that Kyrie Irving wants to stay in Brooklyn.
Starting point is 00:23:46 We have seen a lot of reports, Brian, as you know, as well as anybody, contradict reports. Some are saying Kyrie wants to go to the Lakers. You're obviously writing that he wants to stay with the Nets. Some are saying Katie wants to play with Kyrie. Others are saying he doesn't. Tell us about your report and how certain you are that Kyrie definitely wants to stay with the Nets. All right. Here's what I will tell you. From what I'm less to believe,
Starting point is 00:24:15 Kyrie never wanted to leave. I think what Kyrie wanted was to be here and get all his years and get all his money. Right. He wanted his cake, eat it to, and get some pie on top of it. Right. Right. That's what he wanted. When it became obvious to him, that wasn't going to happen. The net's, no, the next. gave him a deal, it wasn't just a one year to take it or leave it. I do not know whether it was another two or whether it was a total of three, that I couldn't tell you.
Starting point is 00:24:48 But when it became obvious, they weren't interested in giving him a five-year deal or probably not even a four-year deal. That's where things started to get a little contentious. And you know how these things can go? You're negotiating. Feelings get
Starting point is 00:25:04 hurt. People draw lines in the sand. Yada, yada. Right? Now, Now, am I going to tell you that he would not gladly play for the Lakers? No, I'm not going to tell you that. I'm not going to say that at all. What I'm going to say is what he wanted was all of his years and all of his money. And to be playing here with KD and have a chance to win.
Starting point is 00:25:25 That's what he wanted. He never asked for a trade. Now, when things got tested. But he did give him a lift. Yeah, he gave him a list, obviously, right? Right. Requesting permission to try to work a deal. because if you listen and parse the words carefully,
Starting point is 00:25:43 what is said in there was he opted in, he planned to play. Quote, now if the Nets don't want him, that's a different story, unquote, which goes back to what I'm saying about feelings being hurt. So let me ask you this quickly before J. Mack steps in. Do you think he signed the opt-in strictly to get the. the extra $30 million, but always, once he signed it, his intention was, you know what, I'm signing it to get my money, but I want to go to the Lakers? Or do you think he signed it with every intention of playing for the Nets?
Starting point is 00:26:20 I think he signed it because any agent at this point now, the way the NBA is going to advise you, get your money. Right. We can sort stuff out later if we need to. Always get your money. And he wasn't going to go out on the, he was not going to go out on the market on a whim. and take six million dollars, right? That's just not happening.
Starting point is 00:26:43 Nobody's giving away that kind of money. Yeah. He's not leaving 30 mil on the table. Brian, I got to ask you, you cover the nets. Can you think of a more, you've been in the newspaper business for at least 20 years, maybe longer, but can you think of a bigger disaster than Kyrie Irving this past year in Brooklyn, going AWOL from the team, refusing the vaccine? I know that's his choice, whatever.
Starting point is 00:27:06 The James Hardin stuff, where Hardin shows up, and, you know, they're all excited, and the next thing you know, Kyrie comes back, they go from first place to Kyrie's burning sage and James Harden wants to get the hell out of town. Like, this was as big of a disaster, Hindenberg style as we've seen in recent years, right?
Starting point is 00:27:23 Yes, in recent years, you know, I did a piece where I was looking at the worst failures in NBA history. And right, and I put this third, and really, frankly, it might be second. Listen, trading Bill Russell, that was pretty bad. Right? Other than that, I'm really struggling to find something worse than that.
Starting point is 00:27:48 Now, I'm prefacing by saying, listen, they're not going to give away Kevin Durant for nothing. It's just not happening, right? And they've got a lot of offers, but they don't have that offer, right? That Hershey Walker deal where you say, I have no choice but to do this. They haven't gotten that. So it's not impossible, and we're trending in that direction. We could see all of these guys here in training camp, right? There's no market for Ben Simmons.
Starting point is 00:28:16 No. Right, right. So it's not impossible. We can see all three of these guys here in training camp. I wouldn't rule that out. Brian, do you? I wouldn't even bet my money either. Do you know the answer to this?
Starting point is 00:28:29 Does Kevin Durant want to play with Kyriever? Because obviously the timing of his request. Okay. A lot of people will sit here and tell you that they know the answer. No, come on. That's not me. I have no problem. If I don't know something, I'll tell you, I don't know, but I'm endeavoring to find out.
Starting point is 00:28:47 And I am currently endeavoring to find out. Brian, if I asked you to put a percentage chance on this, I think we'll have fun with it. So the odds, Kyrie knows, after this $36 million deal, nobody wants to get in bed with him because he's crazy. Okay, we don't know what he's going to do. He's more likely to quit than anything. No teams offering him anything. what are the odds Kyrie comes in as a good soldier, Brian? He shows up at every game and he tries hard and he doesn't go AWOL, doesn't fake injuries,
Starting point is 00:29:13 doesn't ask for time off, and he tries his best. And the entire season, Kyrie is a model citizen. What percentage chance do you give that happening? Well, see, here's, listen, Kyrie will probably define model citizen differently than you will or the chris might or than I'm. Well, put a definition on that then. Fine, put a definition. What does Kyrie model citizen look like? Listen, I think the best you can hope for Kyrie.
Starting point is 00:29:39 The best you can expect is that when he's healthy, he plays. That's the best. Now, yeah, he's a little guy that hurls himself in the lane, so he gets hurt, right? But even that, you expect him to play whatever, 60-some-odd game, 65 games, right? I think model citizen for Kyrie and every player's different. Model citizen for him is when he's healthy, assuming he misses, whatever, 15, 16, 17 games due to injury, that he goes out in place.
Starting point is 00:30:18 Right? And that he doesn't stir up any trouble. That's all. That's all you're asking for him. Not a high bar, mind you. Right. Gun to your head. Do you think that Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are back,
Starting point is 00:30:32 with the Nets next season. I do believe both of them. The way we're trending, I think they're both in camp. How long that lasts, I don't know. Brian, if they come in, what do you think, we asked you about Kyrie's attitude,
Starting point is 00:30:48 if he comes back, what do you think KD's attitude will be if it started a season, he's with the Nets? I don't think KD has it in his DNA to just put his feet up and not play. Yeah. I don't think he's built them.
Starting point is 00:31:04 way. You know, we've seen it from some guys. We saw, we saw the way Harden acted to get what he wanted. We saw the way Ben Simmons acted to get what he wanted. I don't think KD. has it in. And I just said, like 10 minutes ago, I don't want to try to judge within another man's heart. And now I'm going to turn around and do it. But I don't think he's built that way, right? So I think he's going to come out. He's going to practice. If he's still on this roster, some training camp, I think he will come out, he'll practice. when he's time to play, he'll play hard, he will not be interested in load management, he won't be randomly taking days off or weeks off. This is not him. Now, that doesn't mean that he may not still at that point want to get traded. He could, right? If he just says, I don't like the vibe here,
Starting point is 00:31:52 I don't like the environment, I've lost faith, and what have you, yeah, it could happen. But I don't think he's going to sit and hold out. One quick one on the Steve Nash relationship with Kyrie. I told the story on my podcast how Kyrie invited Steve Nash to his house after he was announced as Nash as a coach. And Kyrie basically refused to answer the door for like 25 minutes. Nash was stuck in the rain as Kyrie basically sending a message, hey man, I'm running the show here. Eventually, you know, he had his housekeeper or whatever, let him in.
Starting point is 00:32:22 But their relationship has not gone well. We saw after the season when they were swept. Kyrie said, yeah, Kevin and I will sit down with the GM and the owner and we'll talk about what's going on. Like the disrespect level to Nash is not good. Can the Nets in good faith bring back Kyrie and Kevin Durant to work with Steve Nash? I think they can only for one reason. Steve Nash is a uniquely positive, easygoing person. There are a number of coaches that I don't think it would work with at all.
Starting point is 00:33:00 By that, I don't even mean level of success. I mean a number of coaches who have said, yeah, this is not working. One of us is leaving, right? You make up your mind which one of us is going out the door, right? There are a number of coaches that would respond that way. I think Steve is as positive a guy as you could ever want to be, right? I mean, this guy may little orphan Annie look depressed, right?
Starting point is 00:33:26 That's just the way he is. And that's one reason why he seems to be able to, at least handle coaching in this environment. Now, you can sit there and argue his endgame and his system. That's a whole separate issue. That's for another conversation probably that we can carry on about it. I do think they can, but I do think the Nets as an organization want to see some changes. And I don't know at this point in time, you know, Kyrie is not 21.
Starting point is 00:34:02 I mean, he's not old, but I mean, he's pretty much a developed player. I think you probably know what you're going to get. And that's why there was no five-year deal. That's why there was no four-year deal. All right. Because you can't count them. That's our man, Brian Lewis. Great stuff, brother.
Starting point is 00:34:19 Hey, have fun chasing this down the rest of the summer. Love it. Oh, it's got my ulcer working. That's Brian Lewis, New York Post. Brooklyn Nets beat writer. Great stuff, brother. have a good weekend. All right.
Starting point is 00:34:33 Thanks for having. Yep. Here's Ryan Music with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. All right, guys, let's keep it rolling here in the NBA. Jason, I think you made a little quick reference to this before we brought on Brian.
Starting point is 00:34:50 Lakers owner Jeannie Bus made some waves a couple weeks ago when she tweeted, I miss KB. He would understand and explain everything that I'm not allowed to. Honestly, he was the greatest Laker ever. he understood team over self, meaning your rewards would come. If you valued goals over your own, then everything would fall into place. All can reply. The interpretation by most was yes, Chris.
Starting point is 00:35:12 This was in reference to LeBron James, his leadership of the Lakers, or maybe that they would be potentially bringing in Kyrie Irving in the near future. Well, she's pushing back against that notion telling NBA.com, No, it was my heart full of sadness. You look to people surrounding you that feel the same way to commiserate. That's all it was. It wasn't intended at anything other than I had sorrow in my heart and I was trying to lighten my load. In the larger context of this conversation, she was making reference to an upcoming series about the Lakers on Hulu,
Starting point is 00:35:47 and it's surfacing memories of Kobe and just how much she misses him. Chris, you buying this explanation? No. And I like Jeannie. is a really nice person. But if it's just about Kobe and you missing him, he was in the franchise with 20 years. You knew him well.
Starting point is 00:36:08 You had a personal relationship with him after that many years. Talk about that. Talk about Kobe the person. Talk about Kobe the dad. Talk about what you miss about him as far as his personality or whatever it may be. Don't bring in the Lakers. I mean, you don't need to bring in the Lakers. and what's going on right now if you're just releasing about missing Kobe Bryant.
Starting point is 00:36:34 And so that's why I don't buy it because she tied it in to what's going on with the Lakers right now. Yeah, it's a risky move on her part because, you know, she's not as social media savvy as a guy like LeBron. And you start trying to play these games with LeBron. It's a little out of her depth. I will just say, Chris, I'm not that excited about the Hulu series, but I did love, love, love the HBO series on the Lakers. Winning time. Yeah, winning time was incredible because guess what?
Starting point is 00:37:02 The Lakers didn't have final say on it. So we got to hear like real stuff, even if it was Hollywooded up. I don't even know if that's a phrase, but you know what I'm saying. Yes, yes. It was entertaining. I got to admit, I know my man Jerry West didn't like it. You know, you watched the whole thing. And obviously, I have never seen that side of Jerry West.
Starting point is 00:37:22 I've talked to him many times, many times. I've never seen him act like that. But I thought as it went on, I mean, the depiction got better, but I get why he was upset. But the bottom line, it was very entertained. There's no doubt about it. And I'm actually looking forward to season two. Is that happening for sure?
Starting point is 00:37:42 I believe so. Oh, okay. I don't quote you, but I think so. The only thing I heard was if it's about Kobe Shack, there's a certain person who's going to try to squash the Kobe angle in Colorado. Oh, yeah. Yeah. No.
Starting point is 00:37:57 It's understandable. I don't know if it'll go that far. I think it'll stay with the Showtime era. Oh, okay. Yeah. The Hulu one is, I think, going into all that, right? Oh, wow. All right.
Starting point is 00:38:08 Yeah. Or at least that era. I don't know if it'll get into that, but that era with Kobe and Shaq. But I believe winning time, if there is a second season, I think it'll still be the Showtime era, not Kobe Shack. All right. All right, we'll wrap it up here. One more NBA story.
Starting point is 00:38:26 It looks like the Sons will be keeping their big man, D'Andre Aiton, who's been constantly mentioned in a potential sign and trade involving Kevin Durant, who had the Sons on his list of teams he would play for. But the Pacers proposed a $133 million contract over four years to the restricted free agent, which means the Sons have the ability to match. And it's been reported they will in order to retain Aiton as a part of their core going forward. Jason, right move by the Sons here? Oh, this is a tough one.
Starting point is 00:38:55 This is like a 30-minute discussion. The sons did not want DeAndre Aiton. That's very clear, right? They had two chances to offer him contracts. They refused both times. And only because they were absolutely forced to because they lose him for nothing, the sons are going to pay him four for 133.
Starting point is 00:39:12 They didn't have it. They had to match it. I know they didn't want to, but they had to. Does that make sense, Ryan? Sure, I mean, I get it. You're saying they had to because he's an asset. Yeah, you can't. lose a guy you took number one before
Starting point is 00:39:25 Luca Donge it's for nothing after what, four years, three years? You can't do that? Yeah, look, I actually like the move. Now, they're going to have to smooth some things over. Obviously, he's going to be upset because the feeling is that they didn't want him, or at least they didn't want him at this type of money.
Starting point is 00:39:41 That's the thing. And look, Robert Sarver, their owner, has been cheap. There's no doubt about that. Over the years, he's been known as one of the cheapest owners, if not the cheapest, in the NBA. And so, yeah, he didn't want to max out DeAndre Aitin, which is tough to do in today's NBA with most centers.
Starting point is 00:40:00 Obviously, Embed and Yokets are different animals. But outside of that, you know, it's tough to max out a center. But I do think for their basketball team, like keeping it strictly basketball, I think they're still a contender. Now, obviously I like Golden State better than them. I like the clippers better than them. you can argue Dallas, maybe Memphis will be better than them.
Starting point is 00:40:23 But I do still think they're in the mix in the West. I don't think that would have been the case without DeAndre 8. Denver, too. You can throw Denver in there. I don't know that they're better. But they're in that range. Oh, the disrespect. The disrespect, they haven't, they got swept in the first round?
Starting point is 00:40:39 They didn't have Murray or Porter, bro. Come on. You said Yokic. You just say Murray or Porter. That's the team. When they had the team together, they took down Playoff P. And your guy, Kowai Lowe. they got swept.
Starting point is 00:40:51 So, yeah, they'll be in the mix, but I'm not about to say they're one of the top two contenders out west. So I think DeAndre Aiton, 17 points, 10 rebounds, decent touch on his jumper, don't have to run a lot of plays for him to bog down your offense. He's still going to give you those numbers.
Starting point is 00:41:08 I think they need it. And so I think it's a good signing for them, and they did get him for a little less money than they wanted to, Ryan. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The HARD Lye News. All right, I don't know if Tony Romo is a big believer in Dak Prescott.
Starting point is 00:41:27 I got my doubts. We'll get into that next. It's Chris Broussard and Jason McIntyre. In for Colin. This is The Hurt. What the hell does George Bush got to do with a little Kim?
Starting point is 00:43:53 Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:44:13 I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you. But just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed correct. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:44:31 Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast. Starting point is 00:44:48 And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing
Starting point is 00:45:07 and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid?
Starting point is 00:45:22 Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way.
Starting point is 00:45:38 Open your free, our heart radio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. Hey, welcome back to the herd. Bruce Ard and Jason McIntyre in for Colin. We're live from the Fox Sports Radio Studios. And we're going to step into the NFL for a moment. Tony Romo, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, was talking about the Cowboys recently.
Starting point is 00:46:03 And he says some controversial stuff. Here he is. You're seeing just a little bit of change start to happen. So I think you'll see a shift in philosophy of a little bit. The identity might change and get back toward the 16-ish. you know, 17-18 season. But I still think Jack Prescott's going to have a fantastic year.
Starting point is 00:46:20 I think he's shown he's more than capable of playing great football consistently throughout a year. And I just think it's going to be a little different, you know, because the weapons won't be quite as dynamic. They'll still be very good. But I do think that you'll see teams play them just a little bit differently. All right, Jay Mack, your thoughts.
Starting point is 00:46:42 It sounds like he's saying that he expects them to go back to 2016-17, 17. That's when they were a run-first offense, and Ezekiel Elliott was one of the best running backs in the league. Is that a shot at Dak? He tried to clean it up a little bit with some complimentary talk. But what do you think? You're always looking for people to stir up trouble.
Starting point is 00:47:01 No, I'm just asking. I mean, I know how you rock, man. That's not how I rock. Listen, Dak Prescott, I believe, was a rookie in 2016. And they wanted to be safe with the mid-round pick, ushered in as the injury replacement for Romo. And it was the ground and pound work when you've got the great offensive line. I believe they have two new starting offensive linemen.
Starting point is 00:47:23 They lost Amari Cooper on the outside. The word is Michael Gallup will not be ready until at least Halloween coming off the surgery. So they're going to go into week one, it looks like, with C.D. Lamb as the number one receiver. And the number two receiver looks like it's going to be a rookie named Jalen Tolbert, a twitchy guy out of Southern Alabama. or South Alabama, he's good. But those aren't the weapons that Dak Prescott got to being a top 15 quarterback with. And as for Ezekiel Elliott, I mean, this fact is, I don't know how else you, how could you positively spin this?
Starting point is 00:47:58 Ezekiel Elliott's rushing yards have dipped each year as a pro. He has steadily declined every single season. He averaged like 58 yards a game last year. You know, the bounce isn't there. I personally think Tony Pollard is a better back right? now than Zeke Elliott. It's not a knock on Zeke. It's just reality. Chris, look at his numbers. The numbers don't
Starting point is 00:48:18 lie. Okay? He is just not what he was when they had the best offensive line in football. I think Dallas takes a big step back. I might be betting the Eagles and Giants depending on the odds. Giants? To win the division. I'm betting on the Giants coaches. Not the talent,
Starting point is 00:48:34 but the coaches and the rebound from injuries. I love their defensive coordinator. I don't care if Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells are coaching them. Well, their coach last year. The Giants? Macadu was a total, I mean, just disaster. You mean, Judge. I'm sorry, Judge.
Starting point is 00:48:48 McAdoo was before that. Judge was horrible. But I just, I think the Giants had a lot of injuries last year. If they can get healthy, I really like Daybull coming over from Buffalo. I think they've got a small chance. That division is not great. Like, nine or ten wins is going to win that division. All right.
Starting point is 00:49:03 I don't think Dallas steps back nearly as far as you do. It is a horrible division, and I think that helps them out. Now, obviously, Ezekiel Elliott, is not what he used to be. And I actually am with you in that they need to get the ball to Tony Pollard more, which I think they will. The question for them has always been,
Starting point is 00:49:21 can he handle a steady diet of rushing the football? Or will he get injured? I want to see if I'm the Cowboys. And I'm not saying you bench, Ezekiel, but maybe it's more 50-50 than what it has been with Zeke being that number one guy. They are not built right now to run it. like they used to, unless these two can, you know, be a one-two punch
Starting point is 00:49:45 and they can both share the load. But in general, I do like this philosophy. And I've been a long-time DAC fan, J-MAC. From the time he stepped in the league, I thought he reminded me of a Russell Wilson. I thought a little lesser version of a Russell Wilson. But as much as I've liked him, because I've liked his intangibles, I think he's a leader, I think he's a winner, I think he can galvanize the locker room. he's not an Aaron Rogers type quarterback.
Starting point is 00:50:16 He's not a guy you just put on your shoulders or he will put you on his shoulders and carry you with his arm. And Dallas has forgotten that. All this talk, remember last year? Oh, when you throw for 6,000 yards? Did you just study and analyze the yards? Most of those huge games came when they were down big. And the defense went pre-vent.
Starting point is 00:50:40 and then Dak brought him back with a bunch of yardage. Sometimes won a couple, sometimes lost. That's not impressive to me. Where were you when you were getting smashed in the first half? Digging the hole. Hey, can I ask you? And so let him be more of a dynamic game manager who can throw it well here and there,
Starting point is 00:51:02 who can make plays with his own. I've always called Jack a playmaker or a game manager who can make plays. But isn't by definition... With his arms and with his legs. That's what they need to get back. By definition, a game manager is not dynamic. He is safe. No, but I'm saying he's a unique game manager.
Starting point is 00:51:19 He is a game manager who can make plays. Okay. He can make plays here and there. I just want you to rewind. He's more than your typical game manager. You said Jack can put a team on his back or you want him to. I said he can't. Oh, you said he cannot.
Starting point is 00:51:33 I was saying he cannot. They've gotten the impression over the last few years that he can put them on his back. He's not that guy, but he is a game manager who, when needed, can make a big play with his arm or his legs. That's what they need to get back to. And we'll be back with an hour left, J. Mack and Chris. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman helped make you funnier.
