Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer,
Starting point is 00:00:18 Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Starting point is 00:00:41 Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. For 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J.
Starting point is 00:01:11 And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:35 Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports Radio in noon to 3 Eastern, 9 a.m. to noon Pacific. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day in the IHeart Radio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. We're listening to Fox Sports Radio. All right, here we go. It's hour two. Great to have you in. Albert Breer and Danny Green, 15 years and a league will stop on by. Last hour, quite a pleasure.
Starting point is 00:02:08 The official NFL draft guy, Dane Brugler, from the Athletical Stop By. He does as well as good a job as anybody does doing that. J. Mack, got to tell you got a very exciting weekend plan. Going to Vegas for UFC 300. 12 current or former champions on that card. Best UFC card of all time. What hotel he's saying that? I'm not going to get into that.
Starting point is 00:02:30 Very nice. Are the pools open yet? I'm not going to be at the pool. Just get a cabana post up. Vegas now is a food and event town. It's not a food and event town. It's always been viewed as a gambling town, but you can gamble all over the country now. It is a great food town and a great event town.
Starting point is 00:02:46 And that's where... I think I would call Vegas more of a party town than an event town. Come on. You've got... You're going to have Super Bowls and UFC 300. Vegas does big events. big, big events. It used to be, you know, the money was in certain things.
Starting point is 00:03:03 It's, when I watch a lot of that, you walk through a slot machine crowd. It's not a dynamic demographic. What's the gambling budget this weekend? I don't gamble when I go to Vegas. I eat well and go to events. I don't gamble. Interesting. No table games at all.
Starting point is 00:03:18 None, zero. A crap, the little roulette? I won't gamble one second. Roulette is a sucker's game, but man, it can be fun. Okay, gambling. I'm not anti-gambling. Did I tell you? I made gamble.
Starting point is 00:03:26 I made sports. book gamble, do a future on USC being Natty. Oh, stop it. Have you seen their schedule? Ohio State is the Natty. Well, yeah, probably. Real quick, though, I was in the Bahamas. You could gamble there, and I wanted my kids to watch me gamble at the table.
Starting point is 00:03:41 And, of course, the pit bosses are like, they have to be far away. I was like, why? Who cares? They can't watch their dad gamble? And so I was like, I'm not giving you my money. I actually think that my wife always says this about parenting. Be a great example or a horrible warning. Kids learn from both.
Starting point is 00:03:57 So I love telling my kids, dad gambles a lot. Let them watch me. See how it lands. Life's an adventure. Let's see how it lands for the kids. Listen, some of these card games are straight up math games. I want my kids thinking math when they're at the gambling tables. I don't know why you're laughing.
Starting point is 00:04:14 That's real tough. No, I mean, if you're asking a kid, what would you rather do? Crapes or math? I think the answer is obvious. I mean, have you seen the movie 21, the counting cards in Vegas? Awesome movie. It's a great movie. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:26 I'm trying to teach my kids. Hey, listen, you've got to be able to count some cards. I have a problem with any of this. I think it's excellent parenting, and I hope people out there can understand the value of a good card game for children. Should we start turning the power hour into the parenting hour? That's a great idea. By the way, so I want to show you something.
Starting point is 00:04:49 So Janus is out until the playoffs. He's out, you know, regular season wraps up Sunday. He should be. It's got a little tweak. So the bucks this season. kind of fascinating the bucks this season without yonis have a higher offensive rating in games without him make more threes and have a higher three point percentage in games without him and they shoot 41 and a half percent from three in games without him number one in the league when he's not on the floor now i'm not trying to argue long term the bucks are better without yonis but i will argue the Dame Yonis thing's not working. It was a Hail Mary.
Starting point is 00:05:31 If I say Hail Mary in the NFL, what do you think? Low percentage desperation. The Dame thing was much lower percentage and more desperate than anybody wants to acknowledge. They've had all season to figure it out and they can't. It was a Hail Mary, which we've said multiple times. And they don't have any first round picks, right? All the pick swaps, they gave it a way to get Dame and Drew Holiday. They have a very, very old roster.
Starting point is 00:05:54 And I think Bobby Portis is the kid. at 29. I think a lot. I think Janice knows all of this stuff. So the other thing, the NBA draft is not the NFL draft. I mean, Houston can be awful. They hit in a quarterback and a couple of receivers and a coach. They win the division the next year. That's not the NBA draft. I mean, think how good of a coach Greg Popovich is.
Starting point is 00:06:16 They're going to go like, you know, 20 and 62. And he's got Wemby, because you're getting 19-year-old kids. So in the NFL, you can turn it around. Bill Parcells went to Miami, not even as a coach as a personnel guy, a GM guy. I mean, they went like, I mean, they went from like one win to 11 or something like that. Five to 11 or one to 11. You can do that in the NFL. You can't in the NBA.
Starting point is 00:06:37 So, you know, my take is, the T-wolves have had high draft picks forever. I don't think they've won a playoff series in like 20 years, 20, 21 years. So I think Milwaukee's in a weird space. So they need some, they're an old roster. The dame thing's not necessarily working as you look at all the analytics. Could it get better next year? Certainly. Some stuff doesn't gel, but it's not like they haven't played together. So it's very fascinating. I said, I don't know how good Milwaukee is. I think they're the most interesting playoff team. If they get matched up early with a Boston and
Starting point is 00:07:09 Philadelphia or a Cleveland and get run or a Miami and get run, I think Janice is over struggling in the playoffs. I think he's over it. Danny Green, 15 years, three NBA championships. What's interesting, he got one with the Spurs, the Raptors, and the Lakers, host to Inside the Game Room with Danny Green. Smart guy. I always love them on the show. You know, we talked about that, is that sometimes when you get a star and you're not in a glamorous market, like a Milwaukee,
Starting point is 00:07:37 and you may win, but you're like, we've got to make this move because players won't choose us. We got to go trade for them. And I thought the Dame Yannis thing would be better. The analytics tell you it's not. great. Are you surprised that Damon Yannis, Danny, has not been a perfect fit?
Starting point is 00:08:01 No. I think this year, I think a lot of people expected better, but it's just the first year. Mind you, there's been a lot of changes. There's been a lot of injuries. Guys coming and going during the trade deadline, they picked up different people. I don't think that they don't fit. I just don't think that the defensive side is
Starting point is 00:08:17 producing the way they expected. And that's due to the lack of Drew and the pieces they've gotten around, you know, letting Drew go. Changes your defense. letting certain people go, change your defense. So, you know, Jay Crowder's a guy that's had injuries. They don't have a bunch of three-and-d guys. Now Malik Beasley's been shooting the hell out of the ball.
Starting point is 00:08:35 Defensively, he has to carry a load in that starting group of guarding the perimeter. Because obviously, they're a little bit smaller. You know, Dame is not the greatest, he's not terrible, but he's just smaller. They have a smaller, you know, front court or back court with him. And then Pat Bev, he's a defender too, but he's smaller. So I think that's where their weaknesses are. It's not the offense. obviously the dame can score yonis score brook it shoots it well they have good shooters around them
Starting point is 00:08:58 but defensively is where they lack a lot of the discipline and then with a coaching change you know that that makes things a little bit harder you know midseason you got it 30 and 13 you got a coach and change probably changed up a whole offense trying to figure each other out i think it just needs more time so i'm not that shocked but i also think you have to we have to give a little bit more grace period because of the things that have happened this year with them so i was saying to start the show that there was a time My favorite first player was Dr. Jay, and we all love Michael. And it was the spectacular. But analytics now are not about dunks in the spectacular.
Starting point is 00:09:34 They're about different things. The league's getting more European. And by the way, when you play below the rim, you age more gracefully. You start high flying, you crash on the floor. John Wall, Dwight Howard, Blake Griffin, Russell Westbrook. Steph's 36 looks like he could play forever. Luca and Yokic to me. Those guys look like they could shoot those jumpers
Starting point is 00:09:57 until they were 44 years old. So I look at Luca and I look at the European players and I look at Yokic. And it's not as aesthetically pleasing. It's not the NBA I grew up with. I love it. But I look at those teams.
Starting point is 00:10:12 Do you see what's happening to the league where these guys that kind of play more deliberately below the rim, analytic superstars, not that optically, they're not jumping high-flying guys. Do you see the change the NBA is moving to more European and that Luca and Yokic may be our magic and bird the next 10 years? Yeah, I see it, but I also think it's never going to go completely away
Starting point is 00:10:43 from the American type of basketball style of play, I guess you would say, quote-unquote, of the athleticism. You still have guys like Anthony Edwards. You still have guys like John Morant. Those guys are still, maybe if they can adapt and adjust, but some of them said their careers may not last as long, like a Dirk, because they shoot the one like a fade, which you don't have to be athletic to do. But they're great players, and I see them adapt and adjusting.
Starting point is 00:11:06 But yes, I have seen that the league has changed some and going in that direction. Those guys are crafty. They're pros at 15, 16 years old, so they have really good fundamentals. They have really good touch. They have high IQ. There's some smart, probably more smarter than some of the American players, for sure, because they've been doing it so long. And they have to be smarter, crafty, because they're not as athletic.
Starting point is 00:11:25 But I still see a lot of that American style play happening because we have so many dynamic superstars, so many guys that can do not only be athletic, but can score, too, under the rim and do this. Anthony Edwards and John Morant, those guys, I can still see them. Shag, SGA, I see those guys still be able to score and adapt and adjust when their athleticism isn't as high as it was when they're younger. They'll Blake.
Starting point is 00:11:49 People say Blake, but he developed a jumper in mid-range. you shot some threes, and then in Detroit, you play a different style of game. So I can see guys adapt and adjusted as they get older. But people love that. The reason why they sell out of tickets, people love to watch those type of things. People want to see those type of things. They want to see the athleticism. They want to see the dunks.
Starting point is 00:12:05 They want to see the fast breaks. Why they change the take foul rule, you know, stop in the break rule, because they want to see more fast breaks and more points and more threes. So, yeah, I can't see us completely getting away from it. You know, I've said, I don't think the Lakers could beat Denver, but I could argue they may match up better with them than anybody not named the Celtics. They're long. LeBron A.D. at least makes Yokic work.
Starting point is 00:12:32 He's such a dominating defensive player, and he's been healthy now for a year and a half. LeBron in any big series can take over a game and create shots. And then they have enough guys. Austin Reeves, Dilo, can hit a jumper. I don't know if they can beat Denver. I look at Denver, and they don't have much of a bench. most good teams in this league don't they pay their big guys up front yeah do you think anybody in the west like i think i think okay c is just too young i watched minnesota last night and i'm like oh they kind of
Starting point is 00:13:02 match up with them is there a team that you think forces denver six or seven games or potentially could beat them i said one-on-one i agree with you i think anthony davis is the best one-on-one matchup for yokech and even then yokech kind of plays pretty well against the lakers there's no one-on-one matchup for him in the league that you can you know that that's going to stop him i think the best matchup you said minnesota last night but they still are missing car in tony towns yeah i think with those two bigs it gives yokish the best look and i think they're the only team in the west that gives them the best matchup yeah now lakers they have good pieces i don't think they have that second big that they need to because 80 is better playing away from the ball off the ball a weak side
Starting point is 00:13:41 having to guard yokic and the guard of aran gordon a cutter a lot but block shots on the week's side, but he doesn't have that. They have Jackson Hayes, but I don't know if that's enough. Yeah. You know, the best times when we were able to face them or play the moment with Lakers, we had Jebel McGee, Dwight Howard, we had multiple bigs that we could throw out him and, you know, play the two big game to where two defensive bigs can make it hard for him. The only team that I see that that kind of emulates that is the Minnesota Timberwolves
Starting point is 00:14:07 when they have Carlton Towns healthy. They need him back sooner than later if they want to make a good run in the playoffs. I think if Yannis gets bounced early in the playoffs, he'll grow. rumble. I think Jalen Brunson's better than I ever thought he would be. I think Golden State would make a run and move off all their young bigs. They'd give up draft picks, comminga. They'd give up anything. They're going to keep probably Draymond, Steph, and pods if they can, but they'll move off a lot. Let's say you were Janus, and here come the Knicks, here come the Warriors, would you just stay in the east, which is weaker? Because I do think if Milwaukee gets bounced, I mean, Janus is very,
Starting point is 00:14:46 moving through some coaches here. They don't have a lot of draft picks. Boston looks like they're much better equipped for the future. So is OKC and Denver. If you were a Janus and you were unhappy, is there a place? Because Brunson's better than I thought he would ever be. I'm not so sure. I think New York and Janus makes sense. No? I think it makes more sense than Golden State. They're a little bit younger. They're a little bit younger. They said it's in the east. It's wide open. The West is tough, man. If I'm one of those guys, I would not try to Let's say, I mean, some guys level the challenge. I mean, it's not getting younger.
Starting point is 00:15:20 He has the issues with the calf, the knee, and his ailments are coming along. So when he's younger, it may be different. Like, I want all the smoke. I want to get to the West and play in the West Coast teams and try to beat those guys. But he's already won with Milwaukee. He's proven that he's a champion and done it with his group in his city. So he's done what he's supposed to do when he was in the city, Milwaukee. He's able to know that now figure out what he wants to do and what's best for him without the city holding it against him.
Starting point is 00:15:43 And I do think the best place for him in the east would probably be the district. New York Knicks, honestly. But then you'd have to let go with some guys. They can keep Jalen, OG, and him. You'd have to get rid of Julius Randall, Mitch Robinson, Hartstein. There's a lot of pieces that you'd have to probably move in that deal that you don't want to get rid of because they have a lot of great pieces there in New York.
Starting point is 00:16:02 But yet, that would probably be the best fit for him in the East. Finally, Wembe, again, better than I thought, another European played against older players, so he walks into this league, gets really good, like Luca and Yokic, you know, Luca was by his 20th game in this league. You're like, oh, we've got an elite score. Is Wemby better than you thought he would be at this age and at this time? I think, yes, all the people you just mentioned are a lot better.
Starting point is 00:16:30 I knew Jaylen Brunson was good. I didn't think he'd be great. And I thought, you know, the New York bright lights would make it different. But Vennby, I think he has proven a lot of people wrong because nobody expected this. A lot of people thought, ball ball. A lot of people thought he was too tall and not agile enough to guard the pick and roll. but he's able to do it all. He's able to guard.
Starting point is 00:16:48 He's able to protect the rim. He's able to shoot threes, play from the high post. And to do it in such a short stint, man, is impressive. So it's this rookie year and the best is yet to come. So, yeah, he's exceeded my expectation. He's way better than I expected him to be. And I can't wait to see what his ceiling is or what he gets to in the next couple years. He's probably going to be the face of the league the next three years or so.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Inside the Green room with Danny Green, three different teams, 15 years in the league. Good luck to you. Congrats on your success with your pod, man. Thank you, man. You catch me inside the green room. I appreciate you guys. All right. Danny Green. Yeah, I think is, Wembe is, but the thing is the European guys get good really fast because they play against older players in the academy. And our guys, you know, it's like, you know, they basically, they're one and done
Starting point is 00:17:36 or they go G League, so it just, their ceilings are high, but it takes a while. Like, Jalen Green finally now, finally is like playing defense, can hit a three, and now he's just not runaround guy. It's like Jalen Green is athletic, but it's like, okay, now finally he gets the coaching. Jalen Green now is playing like a winning basketball style. Yeah. The Wombinima situation is interesting.
Starting point is 00:17:59 Could you be the defensive player of the year if you're on one of the three worst teams in the league? Because he's been unbelievable. What are the analytics? I don't have to problem. We're not saying he's been great, but the team success, it's like basically comes down to Rudy Gober or Victor Wambiama.
Starting point is 00:18:13 And Goberra is on like one of the best teams in the league. a defensive juggernaut, and Spurs can't stop anybody, but Wembeeniyama individually is killing everybody defensive. Well, if it was a draw, I'd give it to the winning team. But if the numbers lean in a direction, he'll choose that. I don't have to have teams. We're not talking MVP. If you're a bad team, you're not getting the MVP.
Starting point is 00:18:36 You're not that valuable. You're not making the playoffs. But if you're just talking about an elite defensive player, you can win the scoring title on a bad team. you're not voted on by that. Why can't you win an individual award on a bad team? Thank you. MVP, I don't need you to be the best team,
Starting point is 00:18:53 but you've got to be like a high-level MVP. You've got to be on a playoff team. And one of us may have a futures ticket on Wembaenaena defensive player of the year. You know, I'm not lobbying for it, but I'm just saying, like, the numbers say Wembe Nama's been extraordinary. And to hear Danny Green, nobody thought he was going to be bull, bowl.
Starting point is 00:19:10 Come on. Did people really think that? Well, were there doubters on Wemba Nama? When I heard about Luca and I watched Luca, I can remember watching Luca on YouTube, I'm like, he's kind of plotting. I mean, he'll score in this league, but I'm like, that guy's going to take over. Everybody was saying Luca, you know, oh, my guy's going to take over the league, and I'm like, he plays in slow motion.
Starting point is 00:19:36 Like, he'll score. A lot of guys, I've grown up with scores my whole life. And then Luca gets here and you're like, oh, my God. Like, I mean, I can remember his rookie year. he's 20 games in and LeBron was asked about Luca. He's like, yeah, you can't stop that guy. He was 19. I mean, you can't stop Wembeyanama.
Starting point is 00:19:53 Now he has no teammates. Put the spurs near the top of the list of interesting offseason teams. They should be in the mix for this Trey Young talk that the Lakers could get Trey Young or go after? Do you think Popovich would like Trey Young? I don't think he would. I'll tell you what. Wemba Jama's not going to sit around and be like a 19 win team for another couple years. I don't think that's on, you know, Popovich runs it.
Starting point is 00:20:12 He doesn't have any time. I mean, you almost made some veiled comments at the All-Star break. Like, he's putting it out there that this is not fun, and I want to win. Well, yeah, losing 60 games. Yeah, go get me some guys. I'm the franchise. I can argue Popovich, his theory is you can't win with a player. This is a two to three-year process.
Starting point is 00:20:31 We're going to be back in the lottery and get another great player. Then you go get your ancillary players that Popovich knew they weren't going to be a great team. They put them on a minutes restriction, a game restriction, which, by the way, was the right thing to do with that body type. This is not an overnight. The NBA draft is not the NFL draft. Popovich is like 73 years older, whatever he is. Well, whatever. A couple year progress report, and then we'll come back and we'll be good.
Starting point is 00:20:56 I think the Spurs are doing it the right way. Now, in three years, if there's a 38-win team, they're not. That's too late. Fix it now. Well, come on. Fix it now. No, that's... You're one binyama.
Starting point is 00:21:08 Drop the hammer. Come on. I'm not kidding. You got to let stuff bake a little. This is a unicorn player. once in a generation talent. And you're going to be like, let's take our time with this. It's different.
Starting point is 00:21:19 Like when a Ewing arrived, he had three or four years of college. It was different then. The NBA now is, it's just 19-year-old kids. You're not going to win with them. I mean, it's just now that Ann Edwards is like, oh, this is a veteran NBA. He can defend. He can. And he was great.
Starting point is 00:21:38 Well, he was in the playoffs last year. I mean, but he was a build-around guy for all-star break first year. you're like, whoa, took him two and three years to become like a winning playoff level player. NFL guy, CJ Stroud walks in, you're like top 10 quarterback. Fourth round, fifth round, you can get a Pooka and a Kooahua. You're like, oh, yeah, it's a Pro Bowl receiver because they've been in college football for four years. They're grownups. They've been in wait rooms for three, four, five years.
Starting point is 00:22:04 Wemby, he needs more time in a wait room. All these guys around him are kids. For two people who are not good with being patient, you and I, right? We agree. That's one of my weaknesses. I'm not patient. You're not either. I'm not.
Starting point is 00:22:18 I mean. I think certain times you have to be. When you're a parent and your kids aren't at the crap table, you need to be patient. Starting point is 00:23:18 Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:24:21 I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:24:46 We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. J-Mack, we are just, we're just doing things the right way on this show.
Starting point is 00:25:12 That's all I'm going to say with that. Oh, wait. Is that a veil comment about another show? I know. I got to tell you. Should we talk more hockey? I love your insistence that children need to see dad gamble. Ryan, are you in on that parenting 101?
Starting point is 00:25:26 How would he know? He doesn't have kids. Well, that doesn't mean he doesn't read books on kids. He definitely does not read books on kids. Jay Mack with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 00:25:40 I can't believe you never played the card game 21 with your kids. Like it was like, you know, in a Vegas casino, but in your house with like pennies. You don't do that? No. But I'm not against it. It's good for quick math. Recall. I think that's actually really clever and smart.
Starting point is 00:25:58 That's why I'm here. It's a gateway game, though. A little bit of a gateway game. A gateway game. All right. Russell Wilson is getting a fresh start in Pittsburgh. after a pretty busty two years in Denver. He'll pair with Mike Tomlin as they both look for their second Super Bowl's.
Starting point is 00:26:14 Russ gave his new coach some praise, saying it's one of the greatest gifts in the world to be able to work with Mike Tomlin. Yeah, I don't know. Greatest gifts in the world? That's a big handful there, isn't it? I think it's a little bit much. But this is Russ's brand. He's always over the top.
Starting point is 00:26:32 Well, he's very optimistic. That's not a bad quality to have. Very optimistic. It's a little much for some, a little cringy for some, but optimism, is that a bad thing? You be an optimist, I'll be a realist. Okay, okay, okay. The realist. Hey, Mike might be done after this year, and I'm on my last hurrah.
Starting point is 00:26:51 I'm on my third coach in four years. Yeah. Not great. No, I think I veer toward, you know, when people say you want the good news or the bad news. Give me the bad news. Yeah, yeah. I'm not looking for fluff and rainbow. Cotton candy.
Starting point is 00:27:05 Give me the bad news. I don't think Pittsburgh, I don't know exactly, I'll follow Vegas and draft kings on the Steelers. I don't know what to make of them. Okay, let me ask you, who's the worst team in that division? There's your answer. Raiders this morning. Wait, who?
Starting point is 00:27:23 In that, oh, I'm sorry. Steelers, Browns, Bengals, and... I would say, Pittsburgh. Yeah. By the way, Nick Chubb going back to the Browns coming off that gruesome injury. Browns are going to be better. Pittsburgh's probably going to win seven, eight games. What's the over, what's their over under?
Starting point is 00:27:40 What's the future bet? I think they're about an eight win team. Yeah. Eight and a half. Yeah, I'd probably, I'd probably take the under. You don't have to bet all the total. I would say this. I don't think there's an edge of you.
Starting point is 00:27:51 I don't think I would bet that. I don't feel strongly about that. I think they're an eight to nine win team. So Vegas is right on that number. I feel very strongly that the Vikings are over six and a half. For the record, what did I feel most strongly about last? year at this time, what team was underappreciated? The Rams.
Starting point is 00:28:11 And I said, it were six and a half. I said, that's with Stafford, Donald, Cooper, Cup, and McVeigh. But they were old and they, you know, they had a quarterback. Stafford. They have a great quarterback. Minnesota. Their coaching personnel is all the offensive guys, Shanahan, you don't know that Kevin O'Connell. They all like Sam Donald.
Starting point is 00:28:33 I know. I like Sam Donald. He's a nice guy. what happened to him in Carolina? How'd that work out? Come on, let's be real. Let me ask you this. Let me ask you this.
Starting point is 00:28:41 What works in Carolina? NBA and NFL? So what evidence do we have that he does work? I mean, he didn't play in San Francisco. We don't have evidence that he's a franchise guy. We have evidence, though, Baker Mayfield could get you to a playoff. We have evidence that Sam's really talented, but we don't have evidence that he consistently wins. I think, well, Vegas is telling you he doesn't.
Starting point is 00:29:03 Vegas doesn't buy Sam Darnold. NFL offensive coaches do, but the Draft Kings is saying we don't trust it. But I do think the one I tend to bet unders, the one over bet to me was the Rams last year and the Vikings. The Vikings are not going to be a lousy football team. So this just hit me. So last year at this time, Baker Mayfield goes to Tampa and everybody's like, oh, they're going to be sellers at the deadline. You get a quarterback on his second, third, fourth chance. You've got some skill position guys.
Starting point is 00:29:34 Tampa had Evans and Godwin. You got a pretty good offensive-minded guy in Canales calling plays. I could admit. Maybe you're right on Minnesota, and I'm missing something. Maybe they're the Tampa of last year? The difference is the NFC North is really good. Chicago is going to be noticeably better. Detroit and Green Bay.
Starting point is 00:29:54 I would argue. You just love Detroit and Green Bay. Are you sure you want to move to Chicago or is it not Detroit or Green Bay? Let me tell you something. Milwaukee. Go to the Milwaukee Dells, the Wisconsin Dells every weekend. Yeah. It's a good living.
Starting point is 00:30:05 I heard a sixers real cheap at the Dells. Very cheap. Next story is the Arizona Cardinal. They're open to trading the fourth pick in the draft, but they reportedly won a huge haul for it. I teased this earlier. So Arizona is said to want a deal similar to what the Niners did in 2021 to draft when they got Trey Lance.
Starting point is 00:30:24 In that deal, San Francisco sent three firsts and a third to grab Trey Lance. That's what Arizona wants for the fourth pick. I think that's insanity. And I think they end up probably just taking Marvin Harris. Nobody's giving up three ones for the fourth best quarterback in the draft. That's not happening. That's not happening. So now you end up with Marvin Harrison at four.
Starting point is 00:30:45 And I do think you're probably right. Then chargers go offensive line. I was thinking about this. Here's the only two teams I am sure will not trade down. Bears commanders. That's it. Three through 16 could all trade. trade down. I do
Starting point is 00:31:06 think Minnesota and Seattle will trade up. Raiders as well, potentially. But the only two teams that are not and should not trade down, in my opinion, bears commanders. Everybody else, there's an argument. Get out of there and go back.
Starting point is 00:31:22 Okay, so if Minnesota's really moving up, with 11 and 20, whatever, where are they going? Like, are they going to 6? Minnesota could stay put if, again, let's just say this. The Patriot It's opt not to get a quarterback because they like Caleb and Jaden Daniels, and New England doesn't like any of the other quarter.
Starting point is 00:31:41 They don't like Drake Men. So they just say, Patriots say, we'll take Marvin Harrison. No way. They don't have a receiving corps. And the Cardinals say, I mean, again, there's a world in which the Vikings don't have to move up much. So let's say the Patriots take a non-quarterback. Cardinals take a non-quarterback. The Chargers can't find a buyer.
Starting point is 00:32:02 They take a non-quarterback. the Giants don't like the available quarterbacks. I mean, start looking at that. I don't think the Titans are drafting a quarterback. Titans are not. They're going to rock with Will Levis, see what he's got. The Falcons are not taking a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:32:15 The Bears at 9 are not. If the New England Patriots and the Chargers cannot find a trade partner, they can't find one, and the Chargers and the Patriots stay put and draft a receiver which they both need, then Minnesota starts thinking, what are we doing here?
Starting point is 00:32:32 We don't have to move. I don't think they will. I think they can get McCarthy at 11. I think all this JJ McCarthy top six is fueled by teams in the top eight trying to get them to trade up for McCarthy. I don't think McCarthy goes top eight. Final story is, oh, this is fun. Caitlin Clark said goodbye to Iowa basketball Wednesday
Starting point is 00:32:51 as the team was on her for their runner-up finish. She thanked everyone, and Iowa announced Caitlin Clark's number 22 jersey will be retired. Kind of cool. We know how impactful she was. A lot of people are debating, oh, women's college hoops will go back to what it was before Caitlin Clark next year. Well, by the way, that's possible.
Starting point is 00:33:11 It was a growing sport regardless, so it's not going to go back to 1985 levels. It will be vibrant. And I do think, Juju Watkins, there's returning really good players. Yukon's good. South Carolina's good. But also, Caitlin Clark going WNBA. So, you know, my daughter plays hoops. I coached her.
Starting point is 00:33:32 We're awesome. we're already looking at Caitlin Clark tickets for when she comes to LA right and if you look at the WNBA tickets for the LA sparks it's like you can get in for 20 bucks 20 bucks the Caitlin Clark game's like $150 yeah that's what jacked up prices and then you see reports like almost all of her games the prices are swollen massively well you think Connor McGregor fights are a little more expensive this is what stars do she's a star in America legitimate star no question no question my daughter's like will she be a starter
Starting point is 00:34:01 in the WNBA I was like yes Probably, yeah. Her vision? I don't know if she'll be an all-star, but she'll, in the history of basketball, if somebody is appropriately sized, you know, high school to college, college, a pro, and they're great scores, they usually score. Doesn't mean they'll be a great player, but she'll be a score in the WNBA. She's at the level where, like, if you're at a bar and you're hanging out with buddies
Starting point is 00:34:20 and you look at the screening, Caitlin Clark's in a WNBA game, you're probably going to have one eye on the game, even if you're not a women's college, who's because of the Caitlin Clark factor. Like, that's just the reality. She is going to draw my attention. I couldn't tell you who the number one pick was last year. I have no clue. Or the year before that.
Starting point is 00:34:36 But I know she's of interest to a lot. In my lifetime, Cheryl Miller and Caitlin Clark are the two biggest stars in women's college basketball. I mean, they're the best players, but to me, that was a lot of good. Nancy Lieberman was a great player. I mean, there's been a lot of great, Deanna Tarassey, Sue Bird. There's been a lot of great players, my Amora.
Starting point is 00:34:55 But the two iconic stars, remember, it's like the NBA's had a lot of great players. MJ, Shaq, Magic, you know, LeBron, Steph, not many become icons. You know, all the great NBA players, about seven of them that have become like, you know, Carl Malone was great.
Starting point is 00:35:14 Akeem was great. A lot of great players. There's been about six icons. Steph is in the icon status. Steph's in the icon status. LeBron's in the icon status. Kobe, Shaq, Magic, MJ, not many. Okay, let me ask you next generation.
Starting point is 00:35:26 Hey, D's great. He's not in the icon status. Just take your time on this thing. Is John Morant in the icon status? No. God, no. So here's the weird thing. I know a lot of, you know, I got a lot of dads and their kids are like my kids' age, 10, 11, 12, 30, 40.
Starting point is 00:35:42 Jammarant is like a superhero to these young kids. I'm not kidding. You know who he's not to? Those of us. I get it. But I'm talking like in a few years, all these young kids will be of buying power. They want his sneakers. They've got John Moran.
Starting point is 00:35:54 He'll be out in the first round of the playoffs. I'm with you, man. I'm just, like, John Moran is more beloved than Zion is right now among young. He's not an icon either. Is he more beloved than Steph? Steph has been in the league for 15 years. Don't do that to me. Come on.
Starting point is 00:36:09 I'm trying to have a reasonable discussion. There's something about John Morant that everybody loves. I don't love him, but I don't dislike him, but he's not going to be an icon. First of all, high-flying guy that doesn't shoot well, ends up getting hurt, ends up not really winning in the playoffs. At some point, there's a ceiling to that. Beyond Hayes, flashy. That's fun, too. But you know who's going to advance in the playoffs?
Starting point is 00:36:33 Yokic. I know. Boring old Jason Tatum. I get. Well, I mean, you got to throw it a just a little diss. He loves, I can't wait for the playoffs to start. Celtics are going to dominate so much. Jason Tatum's not boring.
Starting point is 00:36:47 Another 40 piece. Another sweep. J. Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd Lie News. Say Big on your water. And energy bills with a Navian tankless water, 15-year limited warranty.
Starting point is 00:37:02 Go to tankless made symbol.com. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Hey, we're Kavino and Rich. Fox Sports Radio every day, 5 to 7 p.m. Eastern. But here's the thing. We never have enough time to get to everything we want to get to. And that's why we have a brand new podcast called Overpromised.
Starting point is 00:37:26 You see, we're having so much fun in our time. two-hour show. We never get to everything. Honestly, because this guy is over-promising things we never have time for. Yeah, you blubber lips. Blame and me. Well, you know what? It's called over-promise. You should be good at it because you've been over-promising women for years. Well, it's a Kavino
Starting point is 00:37:41 and Rich after show, and we want you to be a part of it. We're going to be talking sports, of course. We're also going to talk life and relationships. And if Rich and I are arguing about something or we didn't have enough time, it will continue on our after show called Over-Promised. Well, if you don't get enough Kavino and Rich, make sure you check out
Starting point is 00:37:57 overpromise, and also uncensored, by the way. So maybe we'll go at it even a little harder. It's going to be the best after-show podcast of all time. There you go. Over-promising. And remember, you could see it on YouTube, but definitely join us. Listen to Overpromised with Kavino and Rich on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:38:16 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast, Superhuman, documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:38:46 A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care which I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clipper Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from Batsy, basketball to college football or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.
Starting point is 00:39:07 This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast. It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So, if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream,
Starting point is 00:39:35 this is right where you need to be. Listen to The Clifford Show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-taped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with a little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at It Podcast.
Starting point is 00:40:02 I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed cracks. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:40:27 We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:40:48 All right, we got some NFL stuff percolating. Albert Breer is now going to join us live. Albert's always got the very latest. tough Monday morning quarterback. So it was interesting. I like Greg McElroy, but I kind of rolled my eyes at the Caleb Williams hasn't faced any adversity. And I'm like, have you watched USC's offensive line for two years?
Starting point is 00:41:06 Its nickname was adversity. It's just bad. And I think the Pack 12 was actually good last year. And there was only one way to win there. And it was by shootout. He didn't have very many bad halves. Your take on as we get closer to the draft, the nitpicking on Caleb, is any of it? Do you hear around the leak?
Starting point is 00:41:25 Is there any of it that you think, oh, I kind of buy that? No, I mean, I think he's a pretty clean prospect overall. You know, like some of the stuff, it's interesting because, you know, you see people putting clips out of Caleb scrambling around, right, like when there might be open receivers. And so this is a good example of why you need to talk to the teams and not just look at the tape, right? Like, yeah, I had one team tell me, and this was last week, maybe the week before, that when they had Caleb in a meeting, they asked him about one of these plays.
Starting point is 00:41:56 And he had Brennan Rice open over the middle at about five yards. And he passed that up, broke and Tane rate to the right side, winds up scrambling for 25 yards. And Caleb's explanation was, well, you know, I saw Brennan and Rice open at five, but it looked like he was going to be taken down at seven yards, and it was third nine. And so I figured we weren't going to pick it up that way,
Starting point is 00:42:19 so I could pick up the nine yards on my own with my legs, which instead of just not seeing something would show you that he's got pretty good processing speed. So, you know, I mean, we've just, this guy's, and it's another example of this guy just having been on a pedestal for so long, and you build him up for so long, that's all it's left to do is tear him down. The question with his dad was a real one, and that came up, you know, but I, you know, I know what Cliff Kingsbury told the Bears was that Caleb's dad was in the practice facility just once last year. I mean, it's just one time, and that Caleb's dad's involved in the business side, but not really. really the football side. So, you know, I'm not saying that there's no questions with him as a prospect. Obviously, there are. But, you know, I think as far as the onfield stuff goes, there's a lot of disagreement on Drake May within the league. There's a lot of disagreement on J.G. McCarthy.
Starting point is 00:43:08 There's even disagreement on Jaden Daniels. There's much less disagreement on Caleb Williams, much more unanimous of an opinion that he belongs at the very top of the time. So I said, Albert, I'm going to put up our draft board here. I said outside of Chicago, They're taking Caleb. And Washington, I'm told, strong lead to Jaden Daniels. Cliff Kingsbury likes his style. They don't have a run game or no line. They think he fits and makes them more dynamic immediately.
Starting point is 00:43:36 Outside of those two picks, I could argue everybody else outside of maybe the Vikings could move down. Is there anybody else besides the Vikings that you see as a move up team? Yeah, there are three teams that have investigated moving up. The Giants, the Broncos, and the Raiders. And so you have the Vikings at 11. They've obviously investigated it. You have the Giants at 6. You have the Broncos at 12 and the Raiders at 13.
Starting point is 00:44:09 And I think part of that would sort of depend on what quarterbacks are available. Like you hear the Raiders connected to Jaden Daniels quite a bit because Jaden Daniels was coached by Antonio Pierce for three years in Arizona State. but if Jaden goes two to Washington, maybe that idea of trading up is dead. The Broncos, I think it's dependent on Sean Peyton's, whether or not he sees one of these quarterbacks that way. And if he does, like, I don't, I wouldn't doubt that he'd be aggressive, given that he really liked Patrick Mahom seven years ago
Starting point is 00:44:40 and missed out on him by one pick, and we're all sort of prisoners to run history. You know, and obviously we know the Vikings are trying to move up, and, you know, I think they're at a comfort level with either JJ or, Drake May. And that leaves the Giants. And that's why I think the Giants are sort of the pivot point here. They've talked to teams about moving up. They've done everything that you would do, Colin, if you were taking a quarterback high in the first round, right? They had JJ and Drake in in early March for 30 visits. That's incredibly early. Usually 30 visits are happening this time
Starting point is 00:45:11 of year. So a month early, they had those guys. They've been on campus. They met with Michael Pennix in Seattle. Eight of them were there for that. They've worked some of these guys out privately. They worked out J.J. McCarthy on Easter Sunday. So they've done everything that you would do if you were taking a quarterback high in the draft. Now, are they doing that because they're genuinely interested in moving up for one of them or taking one of them at six? Or is it a shell game trying to get somebody else to jump over them? So either Malik neighbors or Marvin Harrison will fall to them. I think that's why the Giants have sort of emerged as a pivot point because they have investigated trading up, whether they do it or not is an open question.
Starting point is 00:45:51 You know, there was, they went and got Trey Lance for a four, and they have Cooper Rush. Yep. I don't view either as a franchise guy, but more than capable potentially backups. I do think, if you go look at the history, the 24th pick what the Cowboys have, there have been a lot of great players. I could see them drafting a quarterback because I do think there's a kid from Tulane and maybe the Notre Dameer. But after the first round or top of the second, it thins out pretty quick at quarterback. It does, Albert. Could you see Dallas going for a Bo Nix for a Penex at 24?
Starting point is 00:46:28 Yeah, I don't think that's impossible. You know, they need to solve their financial issue over the next couple of years. And this is a train coming down the tracks, right? Like, so, you know, you hear rumblings about CD-LAM, maybe not showing up for the off-season program. We'll see on Monday. But obviously, he's going into a contract year. Michael Parsons isn't going into a contract year.
Starting point is 00:46:50 the Cowboys, no doubt, will pick up his fifth year option, which gives them control through 2025. But, you know, his earning power is at an incredibly high level right now. And Nick Post had just got $34 million. So is he going to rattle cages about getting a new contract for himself? You know, and then you have DAC. So, like, these three players could wind up costing you, what, $120 million per year between the three of them? Yeah. Can you keep all three?
Starting point is 00:47:15 Or do you want to create escape hatches for yourself? You know, I think, you know, the one thing that you and I have talked about a couple times over the last few weeks has been, you know, like where the quarterback market is relative to some of the guys who are coming up. Joe Burroughs making $55 million a year. Do you give Dak Prescott $56 million a year if you are Dallas? Do you do that for Tuatoga Volo if you're Miami? Do you do it for Brock Purdy if you're San Francisco? Do you do it for Jordan Love if you're Green Bay? or do you have to get creative and get the guy to take less and will he take less?
Starting point is 00:47:52 These are all open questions the Cowboys are having to answer now with the backdrop of having two other players at premium positions with big tickets that you're going to have to take care of over the next year or two. The one way to solve that would be to create an exit strategy from one of the players and one way to do that would be drafting a quarterback late in the first round there. If you really like a Michael Pennix or a Bow Nixon, and you think that they're going to grow into quarterbacks, that can approximate the production of Prescott.
Starting point is 00:48:18 Good stuff. Albert Brerer. He's always good. He's good again. Good senior money morning quarterback. Thanks, Albert. All right, thanks, Colin. You bet. Sean Payton piece is interesting in Denver. You're staring at Harbaugh and Herbert, Reed and Mahalms. That's how you get just to the playoffs. Not doing it with Jared Stidham. Denver's really interesting.
Starting point is 00:48:44 They need players. and a quarterback. You stick with your Bo Nix prediction? I don't know what I'm sticking with. I still can't get off that. My kids watch me play craps debate. 45 minutes ago. I've got to consider that.
Starting point is 00:48:59 Hour three coming up. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and headwriters,
