Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:01:59 All right, hour two and a Friday, live in Los Angeles. It's the herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, thanks for making us part of your day. Went out last night, had a couple of pops with J-Mack. We were talking about football breaking down schematics. It was good to seeing you, my man. Yes, it was. What a pops is it?
Starting point is 00:02:22 That's what you, I literally started laughing yesterday, driving home. You said something yesterday. Two days ago, and the word just made me laugh. And you said, I had some bad take, and you're like, do you booze it up last? It's like, no, I don't do that. I had a beer with friends. So it's a beer, not a pop. And by the way, you're not drinking beer.
Starting point is 00:02:44 You know that. Whatever. The point being, we had fun last night. And we watched, by the way, basketball school, Arizona 38, a place Lincoln Riley used to coach 24. Oh, yeah. You said you do a couple, take a couple jabs at Oakland. I will say Arizona is sneaky good. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:05 It proves once again the PAC 12 was loaded this year, and it didn't mean much to Oklahoma's got a new quarterback, so I wouldn't take much from that. But it makes me really happy because I know Jed Fish, he's a great guy, and Arizona's, it's a basketball school. They were a handful this year. Like Arizona is no fun to play because you know what? They'll drop 17, 20 points in the fourth quarter like Oklahoma, who outplayed them, and you look up and you got run. So Arizona next year moves to the. Big 12, right?
Starting point is 00:03:32 And they recruit Texas like crazy, so it's a great fit for them. Yeah. Good. Way to go, Jed Fish. Where to go, Arizona. All right, here we go. I don't know if I like my picks. It's a weird week.
Starting point is 00:03:42 Got backups everywhere. Here's a blazing five. That's a hot one. Let's blaze it up. Fire it up. It's Collins, Blazing Five. Titans and Texans. I like the Texans minus four and a half.
Starting point is 00:03:54 CJ Stroud comes back. They're five and two in their last seven games at home. I like the coach. I like the quarterback. And C.J. Stroud at home. has a 109 passer rating this year. He's been like a pro bowl quarterback at home.
Starting point is 00:04:07 There's no question his impact. He returns after a concussion. They're a different football team. 99 passer rating with him, 68 passerating without him. And the Titans are 2 and 6 over their last 8. The O-line's bad. Six of their last eight games. They've been held under 20, and they're a bad road team.
Starting point is 00:04:27 I like Texas to win by 10. Maybe I'm nuts. I know people love Rabel, so do I. 2717 Texans. Raiders at Colts. I don't understand this line. I think the Colts should be favored by more. I'm going to take the Colts at home minus three and a half.
Starting point is 00:04:43 Again, four and two over their last six games, and Minchew's been a very good home quarterback. At home this year, 10 touchdowns, three picks in the 92 passer rating. Michael Pittman, good receivers coming back. He's returning to play. The Raiders are off a wild. emotional win over the Chiefs. They'll regress. Josh Jacobs, Colton Miller banged up, and Aidan O'Connell on the road this year has been the league's worst quarterback.
Starting point is 00:05:12 I think the Colts should be favored by way more than three and a half. Until I see it, I'm taking the Colts to win 2620 over the Raiders. Rams and Giants. This is going to be closer than people think. I'm going to take the Giants plus five and a half. Rams, I think, will win late. although their field goal kicking suspect. The Giants are three and one in their last four home games. I've always liked Tyrod Taylor. Smart guy doesn't make any mistakes.
Starting point is 00:05:41 This year in his three starts, 92.8 passer rating, no picks. Rams defense over the last three weeks, they've gotten into shootouts. It has regressed. It's a bunch of kids. It's a little banged up. I think it's a really close game. The Giants are going to cover. I wouldn't be shocked if they won.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Rams are going to win 2420, but I think five and a half is just way too many points. West Coast team, indoor team going outdoors to a feisty New York Giants team that I think is well coached. Cardinals and Eagles. I'm taking the 11 and a half. Give me a break. Kyler Murray moves the chains. Jalen Hertz has been struggling. Kyler Murray this year, 97 and a half pass-a-rating last week's loss to the Bears.
Starting point is 00:06:26 He's been a good player. He moves the sticks. Jonathan Gannon's the coach. You know he wants to impress his former employee, the Eagles. And let's be honest about Philly. I like them, but they're a rough sled right now. For their last five games, they've allowed 25 plus points. The offense can't put good quarters together.
Starting point is 00:06:43 Jalen Hertz has 18 giveaways. Philadelphia is the better team, but this defense since week eight, the coordinators have figured it out. You can move the ball. And Kyler Murray, his instincts are tough. 11.5 points? Give me a break. Arizona's going to cover.
Starting point is 00:07:01 They're not going to win, but they're going to cover 3024 Philly. Steelers at Seahawks. Steelers are overvalued. Mason Rudolph on the road, aggressive defense that's getting better. I like Seattle minus three and a half. By the way, Gino Smith returned last week. I don't think he's a hoist the trophy guy, but Gino's more than capable. He completed 69% of his throws last week and 105 pass.
Starting point is 00:07:26 rating against the Titans defense, and the Seahawks defense give Pete Carroll credit last couple of weeks. It has played better. And the Steeler team, give me, you know, George Pickens was great. But they beat Jake Browning. Okay, this offense is a water pistol. Mason Rudolph, passerating career, low 80s. I think Seattle's going to win this game, and I don't think it's going to be as close. I'm going to take Seattle 2721, and I don't think it'll feel that close.
Starting point is 00:07:55 I think you'll know watching this game. Seattle is the better team. So it's a weird, weird week for lines. I don't love them. But I'm going to take some favorites, the Texans, the Colts, and the Seahawks. And I'm going to take a couple of dogs because I do like the coach and the quarterbacks consistent with the Giants. And the plus 11.5. Again, I know Philly's going to win.
Starting point is 00:08:19 That's a lot of points. You can move the ball against Philadelphia. 11 and a half? Who are they blowing out this year? I just looked it up. Kyler Marie back at practice today. He had an illness. He'd been out all week. And Hollywood Brown, though, is going on the IR.
Starting point is 00:08:34 So one less weapon for your boy, Kyler, going into... So give me your summation, your opinion on my picks. I like Seattle's... I like the Seattle pick the best. I do not like Houston. Strout off the concussion, really? Dicey. You pick some ugly games.
Starting point is 00:08:49 Where's Dallas, Detroit? I was going to take... Baltimore or Miami. Come on, man. No, Baltimore, Miami is, I tell you, I try to stay away from the big TV games. There's too much emotion. Also, Baltimore's off a huge, dramatic win. I think they're the better team, and they're at home.
Starting point is 00:09:06 But I could see them pulling back. You know, you beat the Niners. Even if you lose or beat the Niners, they tend to beat you up physically a little bit. So I think Baltimore, situationally, is going to regress and not play that well. Miami played okay and beat Dallas, but they got something to prove because nobody believes them still. And by the way, Detroit, Dallas, I strongly considered. I strongly considered. I think Dallas is going to win. They're good at home. But I will say this. Detroit can run the ball and you can run on Dallas. So I just, I would have taken, I think initially in the week,
Starting point is 00:09:39 I would have taken the Cowboys. The more I looked at it, I would have taken Detroit, but we'll see. Let's bring him on. Twelve years in the NFL, a wine Somali and a great broadcaster, Super Bowl champion. Will Blackman is joining us, driving up from the He'll be on speak today as well. But, you know, we always showcase him on this show. How are you, first of all? Let's start with that. Great broadcaster.
Starting point is 00:10:01 I'm glad you think that. I do think. No one else does. No, no, no, no, I do. By the way, I asked. Jay Mack, no one else does. This is a hard business. You know that.
Starting point is 00:10:08 I've been trying to get a situation for years, so I'm glad you're not. Sucking up to the right people. I'm glad I'm not. By the way, I asked you out for dinner. He's like, no, it's my daughter's birthday. And I'm like, oh, great, family guy. He said family man, in quotations. Happy birthday, Jay. Love you.
Starting point is 00:10:25 We love you, too. Let's start with this. The whole Lamar Jackson thing, San Francisco. Man, everybody, cats and dogs living together and fighting about it. I said this week, I don't care about stats. Influence. When I watched the Niners play against Lamar, they weren't nearly as aggressive. I mean, Fred Warner, who's an all-timer, he made him miss a couple times.
Starting point is 00:10:49 And Fred tease off. Fred was like, oh, yeah. looked like he was playing in, you know, sticky shoes. And I'm, so your takeaway, having faced great athletes your whole life as a great athlete, what do you see when you watch Lamar? There was one play in particular I saw what Lamar is when he had that long scramble for first down. And it was kind of a reminder like, just letting y'all know, like, I can run if I want to. Anytime I want.
Starting point is 00:11:16 Anytime I want, I can just take off. And I think going into the game, that's what San Francisco. Fran was really trying to avoid. It's like, yes, he obviously can make plays with his arm. He's throwing the ball while. He has weapons across the board, finally, you know, at every position.
Starting point is 00:11:34 And, but he is still probably the best ball carrier in the NFL. Like, if he decided to just take off and go get yards, he can't be... He and Christian McCaffrey. Yeah, whenever Lamar wants.
Starting point is 00:11:46 So, I just love where he is just his comfort and his maturity, just how he is, just his state of mind. And he just looks so calm every single time. He never looks bothered, never looks rather. Even after a mistake, he makes a great play. He just goes right to the sideline.
Starting point is 00:12:06 He's back to business. There was a point in the game where they were up, and you saw him get into a little argument with somebody. He is competitive. That's what I mean. And so for me, it's like, man, they're up. They're winning. Things are going great, and it still matters in terms of getting the details right.
Starting point is 00:12:20 So people have always sort of rolled their eyes at the personality of Russ, Russell Wilson, but now over the last 24 hours, everybody's come to his defense, and this is no way to treat him. You know, here's the thing. And I'm a big believer in this. Reassess, new data. So when they let Russ Cook in Seattle at the end, Russ Centric offense, it wasn't as good. He goes to Denver.
Starting point is 00:12:43 It's a mess. And three different coaches, a college coach, Pete Carolyn Payton, have just said, I'm going to move off you, and not for stars. for like Mike Glennon, Gino Smith, Drew Locke, Jared Stidham. There is something to reassess with Russ that maybe it was the defense and Pete Carroll and Marchon Lynch. He was the icing, but he wasn't the cake. Is that fair? Do you reassess him now after the Denver mess? Yeah, when I look at Russ in Seattle, it was, it's Pete Carroll's culture. No question. He's the guy. Young, fast, aggressive.
Starting point is 00:13:19 Yeah, he's the guy. He's a star. It's his culture. You know, he's big on defense. The defense was stout. They were able to run the football. He had, you know, on every sign, it's always compete, you know, like always battle. And it was competition throughout and through it. And he and Russ did a great job of quarterbacking that team and making the plays. And when he went over to Denver, I just looked at it from the outside. And I know Russ personally, I looked from the outside. I was like, this is a different situation. because now you come into here where there's no always compete, you know, there's no win forever program with Pete Carroll. There's, you know, the defense is talented, but still, you don't know these guys. You know, it's a different city. You have a new head coach. And you're the guy.
Starting point is 00:14:04 Yeah, and you have a new head coach in Hackett who's never been a coach before. And so he's learning how to be a CEO to begin with. And so this whole thing is different. And I remember I was actually in London and I got to hang out with Russ for a little bit. And I said, how you doing? He said, I'm doing great, just weathering the storm. And I was like, but this is a different storm, you know. And it's already noted that he lost his best friend in Trevor Moad, the performance guy who,
Starting point is 00:14:28 that's a big deal for him because he was able to keep Russ in the neutral mindset. So now Russ is learning how to handle this side on his own. And just from a emotional, just a mental standpoint, it's a beast. And he can still go out there and play football, but I just know overall this is a different storm. So when he came out and he was like, hey, you know, I'm going to bring Super Bowls. I want to do this. And I'm like, man, that's tough. You can't come to a new place and just say things like that.
Starting point is 00:15:01 You know, it's really hard because now the contract alone and the trade alone is already high expectations. So as a quarterback and as a head coach, you have to, you have to be able to gain control of the locker room. first before you can do anything. Yeah. You know, and it reminds me of like, you know, you don't hear much. Now, it's a little different, but golf was playing an MVP level, but you don't hear much about golf in Detroit because he's there and he's just, he's just playing football. That's it.
Starting point is 00:15:32 No commercials, no anything. Yeah. Yeah. And so when you go to a new place, like, I was talking to my wife the other day because I had a, my middle school sweatshirt on. And I remember after every carryover year, I went to a new school. my dad was sent me to a new school to make new friends and so when I go to this new school I'm like I'm just going to like put my head down do my work right and organically gain friends if
Starting point is 00:15:57 that's the place and for me it was easy just go play sports you know or if I went to a new team you know maybe I was known in the area again let me try to like earn down yeah head down let me try to earn these guys and I think just coming in with the setting the expectations I'm going to get these Super Bowls. We want to do this. The mansion, the beautiful wife. You're the star. Not even that because, I mean, players, you know, they have homes and wives, what have you. It's just more
Starting point is 00:16:24 they knew that was coming to Denver with all that, but just, I guess, saying all these things makes it super hard. And in the situation, and now, I think just, it just seems like Sean's over. Sean Panthers is over. Oh, he's just over. Yeah, he's just over it. Is what it seems like. Yeah. The, you know, I was
Starting point is 00:16:42 watching the Jets last and this idea that Aaron's going to solve it next year. And I'm sitting there thinking, Flacco's the fourth quarterback Cleveland has had. And all through the league, offensive coach won with Tommy DeVito, Gardner Minchus in the playoffs. I'm watching offensive coaches have major disruption at quarterback.
Starting point is 00:17:09 Kevin O'Connell is still in the playoff race, fourth quarterback. And yet the defensive coaches, when there's a disruption, it is a circus. And I've been a Robert Sala fan. But I'm watching that last night and I'm like, they're getting blown out more. The defense has regressed. He's unemotional in the sidelines.
Starting point is 00:17:26 They still haven't figured out what to do with Zach Wilson. This idea that Aaron's going to solve it. And I'm like, man, this goes way deeper than Aaron. It's very easy for Aaron on the sidelines to go, hey, I support this mess. What happens if it becomes your mess? Right. I watched that last night and I'm like, they're a mile away.
Starting point is 00:17:44 This isn't a, Aaron's healthy. It's a buffalo's going to. not going backwards. Buffalo's on fire. Miami's coach, brilliant. They're not going anywhere. New England probably gets a quarterback and an offensive coach. What's a realistic expectation on this Jets team with Aaron a year from now? What's realistic in your eyes? Yeah, I mean, they went all in this year with Aaron Rogers, you know. Even coaches, players. Yeah, they went all in. And in fairness, it was kind of the right move, if you look at it from the grand scheme, like the defense was a top defense in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:18:22 And the glaring issue last year was the quarterback situation. And so when that happened, when Aaron went down, it literally took the air out of the entire organization. They've never recovered. They never recovered. And you can see it just trickling down to the point where now, now it almost seems like they're playing with no kind of emotion or hope for this year. No juice last night.
Starting point is 00:18:45 Yeah, none, you know. And it was similar to, so I took our daughter to the Chargers Broncos game. Yeah. And I just remember watching the Chargers. I was like, man, there's just no, no juice, you know. Brandon Staley. And it's almost like everyone can see the writing on the wall. Like this season is just, like, we don't know where to go.
Starting point is 00:19:07 And right now for the Jets, just how they're playing it is like, okay, you know, now we're not in a situation to play in the postseason. hopefully we do get our guy back for next year in terms of Aaron. And again, it's just, does he come in and fix it? No, but I mean, I think he comes in and fills a huge void. But, you know, I've been through. I had nine surgeries when I played. And you come back and what if something happens again?
Starting point is 00:19:36 That's what I said this morning. You think Aaron's going to last with this old line, 17 games? I don't. Right. Not with the pass rush in Buffalo. By the way, Miami's pass rush. has been on fire for two months. Right.
Starting point is 00:19:48 Like that's a real defensive front. Belichick's teams always create pressure. That's not a great place for a 40-year-old and a bad old line. So unless something happens in terms of like make adjustments, you better find people to protect him. Like it's going to be interesting. Because again, if something does happen again next year, like now where is this organization?
Starting point is 00:20:09 The Baker Mayfield. I love Baker. You know this. You know this. We already have this. discussion years ago, years ago. What? Just about Baker, yeah. You had your little...
Starting point is 00:20:21 I didn't have anything. I said he was a little immature. You spent a lot of time on social for the past five years about Mr. Mayfield. Okay, hey, what's your question, please? I don't even go to social. So my take was, though,
Starting point is 00:20:35 this year is really validating him. A second different conference playoff team. And the truth is, they're going to be too good to get a top five quarterback, top four quarterback, unless they just give up draft capital.
Starting point is 00:20:49 And I'm like, I'm looking around the league. The quarterbacks that we like, Trevor Lawrence, Jalen Hertz regressed, Dack can't win on the road against good teams, Joe Burroughs hurt again, Mahomes down year. These are the guys we love. And Herbert doesn't win enough. We love those guys. And I'm like,
Starting point is 00:21:08 Baker could win that division three years in a row. I'd pay, I would have no problem writing a fat check for Baker in a four-year deal. And it's funny. In Cleveland they had the team and the coach eventually, and I thought he was too immature. He's got a defensive coach with a losing record. There's no pressure for him at all in Tampa,
Starting point is 00:21:27 other than replacing Brady. And I look at Baker. Which I think he surpassed that already this year. Expectations are replacing Brady. So my takeaway is this is Baker's team. Yeah, you're going to get Carolina. I would sign him to three-year deal. Would you have a problem with it?
Starting point is 00:21:38 I will have no problem with it. Because it'll be extremely team-friendly. Extremely team-friendly in terms of a job. Yeah, in terms of what they're trying to do. I think the one thing I will credit Baker and I do love the most is just his resilience. Yeah. You know, even coming into the NFL, like he has such an effect as a leader at Oklahoma. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:03 And I just feel like when he came to Cleveland, they just gave him the keys to the car like way too early. And I think that's what happened in terms of everything backfiring. Because if he came in and they just said, hey, again, just come in, do your work, earn it, earn it, earn it. I think it wouldn't be big of a problem. But I think the fact that they was like, LeBron left, like we need a new star in Cleveland. Like, go be who you were.
Starting point is 00:22:28 And by the way, I don't know his agent, but if I would have representative, I would have said, bro, you're going to make a lot of money. I don't want you on 30 commercials, win some games. And I, by the way, I would have, and I know you think, oh, it's easy for an agent to say. I thought. The commercials aren't the big deal.
Starting point is 00:22:46 But it set up an expectation that he's a star. No, but he was the He was the Heisman trophy winner in first pick. Well, what was that mean? That's a big deal. That's a big deal. Historically. That's a big deal. That's commercial worth.
Starting point is 00:22:58 It's not that it was more so like when he got to the podium and he'll speak about injuries. He'll speak about contracts. Like he felt comfortable to do that. And I think the organization allowed that. And so now he spent, you know, he was on a little journey with the Carolina, went to the Rams. and now he's here in a situation, head down. Let me earn it. Let me hear in everyone's respect,
Starting point is 00:23:19 because he's done it before. He's walked on the two teams and has earned it. So one thing with Baker, he knows how to go ahead and earn it where he can gain respect to the team because now you hear nothing but great things from top down about... Oh, they love him.
Starting point is 00:23:30 Oh, yeah, about how he is there. So, no, I definitely would re-sign Baker and just continue to build the team around them. I'm trying to get him back on that couch. He won't come, but it's okay. You will. I bet you won't day. I'm not guilty.
Starting point is 00:23:43 for anything I said, but I do think this Baker's really fun. By the way, speaking of fun, Flacco's got nothing to lose. Zero. I mean, he's like, honestly, I watch him play. He's having the time of his life.
Starting point is 00:23:59 Oh, man. I think Cleveland's a nightmare to face. They are. They're doing everything you need in terms of like the defense, the run, the energy. That's why Stavansky is my coach of the year. Yeah, Stavansky's been on Unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:24:13 Yeah. Outstanding, especially you go back to, you know, how well he was with, you know, Kurt, Minnesota, how well he was with Baker, how well he was, you know, right now with all four quarterbacks. I mean, they were seven and four before Flacco showed up, you know? I'm telling you, last night they got all sorts of guys banged up. If you just list top 10 players on every team in the league, San Francisco's number one. Cleveland's in that next group of about five teams of like dudes.
Starting point is 00:24:46 Like really good dudes. No, this energy reminds me of when, excuse me, when Baltimore went on that run, you know, to go win the Super Bowl. And he was just playing so free, so loose. And when they won the post game interview when he was like, oh, yeah. I don't forget what was it. When he said, I'm going to bang on the door and get that check. He said, now you're going to pay me.
Starting point is 00:25:09 I just brought a Super Bowl. And it was just, it was a magical postseason for Baltimore that year. And just what's going on, just how relaxed is. They show the video of him like falling asleep on the sideline. And I was like, look, he saw that Ravens defense every day in practice. And he had to go against Troy Palomalo twice a year. Like, he's not worried about these guys, man. Not worried at all.
Starting point is 00:25:31 That's why they call him Joe cool, man. What they say, flack around and find out. Is that the new thing going around? Is that a great one? That is a great one. No, I think it's awesome. And I love the fact that I love when quarterbacks like him find a new purpose. Because he was trying to.
Starting point is 00:25:49 I think he did call the Jets, I think, to come back. Yeah, we were really concerned about that. So the Jets didn't have the vision to see it. Cleveland with an offensive coach said, damn right, get over here. Doesn't that concern you a little about the Jets? Or let me throw this at you. There's a curveball. A couple days ago, the Jets activated Aaron.
Starting point is 00:26:15 Aaron was quoted as saying, I didn't want him to do it. They did it because the organization gave Aaron the franchise. And they didn't bring Flacco in, perhaps wanted to, but didn't want to tick off Aaron. Cleveland's like, what do we care? We need a quarterback. I don't know this to be true. But when Aaron said the other day, I didn't ask to be activated, and I believe Aaron, I don't think Aaron would lie about that. I may disagree with him on some stuff,
Starting point is 00:26:41 but Aaron said, I didn't ask to be doing it. So I trust Aaron. I think he's telling the truth. And so they activate him. And he's like, I didn't want that. Why did they do it? They did it because with Aaron, they didn't want to tick him off.
Starting point is 00:26:56 Sometimes you just do things to keep the temperature in the room. And I do wonder if the Jets knew Flacco was better than what they had. But that's a component to the Jets that is interesting. When you give the franchise to Russ or Aaron, the temperature changes. Yeah. No. And this is interesting because, as you all know, like my next step is to be, you know, in the front office somewhere.
Starting point is 00:27:21 Yeah. And sometimes when you have a team with strong personalities on there already, and they may be a player on the market that's like, hey, like, he could help us right now. Yes. But you also have to understand who you have on your team. Yes. And will that happen, you know? Like, obviously I'm good friends with JPP.
Starting point is 00:27:47 Can we play together? Jason P. or Paul. Yeah. And, you know, he and I, we still converse. And when he wanted to go so, you know, he was ready to come back. And I was like, well, what are you trying to do? And so I talked to some people. And it was kind of like, yeah, he would be great.
Starting point is 00:28:03 but now we're in a situation where we have a lot of strong personalities now would that work where we are? There's no question that happens all over the league. Because Flacco is sitting out there, the Jets passed. Did they know he was the better fit, but they were worried about how it would land?
Starting point is 00:28:21 I think that's a real thing. Right, and two alphas in a quarterback room, that's a... Not good. That's tough. Only so much oxygen. There's only so much where you could have many, many, many alphas in a room and it can still...
Starting point is 00:28:31 Yeah. Let me trust me. I have to go back with all this stuff sometimes. I have to let you breathe. What, you and Jason going at it? Is that what it is? battling for air time and sentences. Will Blackman, what a pleasure to see you.
Starting point is 00:28:46 Yeah, always, man. Reservation still stands. I'll be open tonight by myself. Reservation? Are you going to ask last minute on a Friday? Tuesday, yeah, Wednesday. Not Friday. Will Blackman and me have an opening?
Starting point is 00:28:59 Answer's always yes. I'm just saying. Drop the hammer. on the reservation guy. I have a great parley for you this weekend. Thanks to Drafking Sportsbook. New users use the code heard, H-E-R-D. That's me when you download the app.
Starting point is 00:29:12 Takes about a minute. Now for my parlay pick of the week via Draft King Sportsbook. Cowboys at home minus six against Detroit. I like Detroit, but they're hot and cold. Never as good on the road. Cowboys have to get good and get right. I'll take them to win by a touchdown. Steelers plus three and a half at Seattle.
Starting point is 00:29:30 Let's be honest about the Seahawks. They've been outplayed and won the last two weeks. I'll take the hook at three and a half Pittsburgh. Broncos minus five hosting the Chargers. Listen, it's the season. Russell Wilson may get moved out of town. If he plays poorly again, I get a coaching and a quarterback edge at home, Broncos minus five.
Starting point is 00:29:51 If you want to take the herd parlay, check out Draft King's Sportsbook. New users, the code is heard when you download the app. 21 plus in most eligible states, but age varies by jurisdiction. Eligibility restrictions apply. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast, Superhuman, documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:30:40 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. Yep, that's me, Clipper Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from back. basketball to college football, or my career in sports media.
Starting point is 00:31:05 Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast. It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger.
Starting point is 00:31:39 So, if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Listen to The Clifford Show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little count? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:32:09 I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know.
Starting point is 00:32:29 I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed Correct. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. J-Mack with the news.
Starting point is 00:32:57 No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Start with the Miami Dolphins and your favorite hipster coach. Mike McDaniel coming off a big win over Dallas. What I nailed, you were wrong on that one. After this win, it feels like they're not getting enough credit for their physicality. Here's McDaniel addressing the stereotypes to his teeth. To spend your time worried about narratives, I would be a stressed out individual
Starting point is 00:33:25 because I know there's a lot of narratives around even myself personally. It is kind of odd, though. It's a, I feel like I haven't checked lately, but I feel like we're pretty good at stopping the run and running the football. It's generally not associated with cuteness. Whatever. I mean, there's always going to be something. Just call me out personally.
Starting point is 00:33:50 Just use my name, call me out. It's all good. I do like that. For the record, I like him a lot. I think he's, you know, I make fun of the hipster media because they love hipster coaches. but I think he's a really, really super bright guy, and I love their offense, and I love Tyreek Hill. We love Fangio. I really like a lot about him.
Starting point is 00:34:07 I think, I think they can get a little cute, and I have a history where they don't deliver. They're like the Cowboys without the Star in the Helmet. I don't see a lot in January. But this is a team full of good players. They got good players. Bradley Chubb, Jalen Ramsey. Got good players. So I know we have a lot of Dolphins fans that watch.
Starting point is 00:34:27 Trust me, they light me up on social media. It pains me how much I like McDaniel as a Jets fan. And oh, by the way, when Robert Sala came to the Jets, he brought Lefleur's brother as the offensive coordinator. He didn't bring McDaniel. Can you imagine if he brought McDaniel? This guy's really good. He's an excellent coach.
Starting point is 00:34:44 I like Miami this weekend. I like the fact that he addresses that stuff. Well, he's funny. He's like a guy you could go have a beer with and laugh and learn a lot about football. He's a likable guy. I like that he, you know, has the double hoop earrings as a young guy because I did two. You had double hoop earrings.
Starting point is 00:35:00 You didn't know that? When did they? One in each. For how long? So I graduated high school. My parents were like, you can't have earrings. And then so we go to Beach Week, you know, like after high school. And I instantly get them and come home.
Starting point is 00:35:14 And my dad was just so angry. And then I wore them in college for like a couple years. And then I had the holes when I met the wife. And she's like, you're not doing that. No, your wife's totally mature. So your wife called you out. Yeah. And what did she say?
Starting point is 00:35:27 You just say this isn't happening. That's not happening. I was like, all right. And by the way, you caved. Yeah. Anyways, McDaniel. You caved like the Jets defense last night. You just gave up.
Starting point is 00:35:38 Wow, harsh. All right, let's move on. Justin Fields and the Bears. Look at you laughing over there. Listen, bears have won three or four. They're in a good spot this weekend against Atlanta. I mean, they're maybe finishing on a high note. Some of the wise guys like the Falcons.
Starting point is 00:35:52 I just stayed away from this thing. I think Chicago's going to win. Aren't they? Listen, Fields is growing. and a lot of his coaches and teammates have noticed the improvement. All right. And there's been tremendous amount of growth. I mean, where he's just in this season alone, how far long he's come, you know,
Starting point is 00:36:08 taking care of the football, being in control of the game, I think that's been the coolest part since he's come back. His decision-making, you know, from just running a lot to running and scrambling to throw. So that, he's processed things quicker from the time that I got here to now. and so forth. So hopefully he continues to grow up with them. My two senses, I still don't see why he's not the quarterback for us next year. All right.
Starting point is 00:36:35 Well, it's a fun, it's been a fun project to watch. Yeah. I mean, you never want to bail on a guy and see him thrive elsewhere, right? No. But I think it's less about him. It's more about the money and starting over the clock at quarterback. If the Bears only had their, where are they at seventh? You know, they have a first pick, and they also have like the six or sevens or whatever it is now.
Starting point is 00:36:56 Somewhere in five to ten. 10 range. If that was their only pick, the six or seven one, then you would stay with him. But it's just a weird circumstance where he's talented and growing slightly, and you get the number one pick. For the record, you could get a fortune for that
Starting point is 00:37:11 number one pick. You do need a meeting. You could get two ones and two twos. Easily. I mean, what's your quarterback situation next to you? Well, then you'd have Justin Fields. And you have to pay him. Well, you could do, it's the fifth.
Starting point is 00:37:27 your extension thing. You're going to do the Jordan love deal. We're like, we like you, but we don't love you. Well, you'd pay him more than that. But then you're just back at this in a year or two. That's why I would move off. But I also think you can move him and get a second round pick for him. A second and a fourth, absolutely. I think Atlanta's the place, and I think Atlanta would give up.
Starting point is 00:37:46 Atlanta's a mess at quarterback. Atlanta plays the Bears. That's what's interesting about this game. Is that what if he goes out there and Arthur Smith sitting there thinking, I wish I had that guy. I like that guy. We'll see. All right, final story. Listen, C.J. Stroud has missed the last two games with a concussion suffering against the Jets.
Starting point is 00:38:02 He is coming back. He's out of concussion protocol and will start Sunday against the Titans. Different team when he plays. What's that? Houston's a different team. Well, no tanked L. We'll see. We'll see.
Starting point is 00:38:14 Houston's in a three-way tie atop the NFC South with the Jags and Colts. Stroud was having an amazing season. Look like he would be a lock for the offensive rookie of the year. I don't know. Puka Nakua is making a major push. He's insane. He's so good. One of the most shocking draft picks I've ever seen in my life.
Starting point is 00:38:32 I watched him in college. I watched him at BYU and Washington. I just didn't see this. I don't think the Rams saw this. The only person, and I think I've told you the text, in July, my buddy who is close with the Rams, said Stafford loves Puka Nakuwa. I never really heard of the guy like, oh, really?
Starting point is 00:38:50 Fifth round picks? And Puka's been amazing. Stroud's been very, very good, but do you, I know you don't care about awards, but who you, I mean, if Stroud gets him to the playoffs. Well, if Stroud got to the playoffs, he had to overcome chaos. Puka Nakuwa has Cooper Cup, Matt Stafford, Sean McVeigh. He didn't have to overcome anything. He had to be good. C.J. Stroud had to overcome that franchise.
Starting point is 00:39:16 I'd give it to C.J. Stroud. Yeah. I mean, I'm going to tell you something. I want him in the playoffs. I don't think he'd win. Rookie quarterback's play. but he's, I mean, Texans have been in some playoff games. It's the one you don't watch.
Starting point is 00:39:28 This one with C.J. Stroud, I'd watch. I'll just say, against the Jets, I know it was raining. Without Tank Dell, they looked awful. And that was the game he ended up getting hurt. Remember, they couldn't move the football. So, like, I know Nico Collins is fun and Noah Brown and all this stuff. Dalton Schultz, they're just not the same without that stretch the field guy in Dell. It's true.
Starting point is 00:39:46 I'd be careful with your Texans, but it sounds like you already laid it. I did. I already bought two jet skis. J-Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd-Ly News. I cannot get over the fact that you had two earrings.
Starting point is 00:40:02 I can't even get over it. God, you were, you were, you were thought you. Do you want me to show you a picture during the first of break? Yes, yes, I do. You're going to, you're going to mockery. It's going to be endless mockery. So what? I just sit here every day and get killed for being opinionated.
Starting point is 00:40:17 It's part of the game. It's part of the game. You're right. I want to see it so badly. Let's get to a commercial. Does the audience need more, more, more McIntyre on the show. Earrings, men's basketball. No, that I'm over.
Starting point is 00:40:27 Earrings, bring it on. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Hi, this is Jay Glazer, and you may know me for the world of football or fighting or even shows like HBO's ballers. What you don't know is for my entire life, I have lived in something I refer to as the gray. Depression, anxiety. So now I'm coming out with a new podcast. Unbreakable, a mental health podcast. podcast with Jay Glazer, where each week, while we talk about mental health, I hope to describe it.
Starting point is 00:40:58 Give it words. Listen to Unbreakable with Jay Glazer on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Starting point is 00:42:36 and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English.
Starting point is 00:42:56 Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Starting point is 00:43:21 Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Make sure you play this week's Fox Super Six Free to Play Game. Download the Fox Sports app and enter for free for a chance to win your share of $10,000.
Starting point is 00:43:51 cast prizes. So I just got to look at the J-MAC photo with earrings. In the history of the world, Mona Lisa number one, that picture number two. I've never, I cannot get over it. I'll buy that off you. Okay. I want to show you some numbers from a quarterback. Random guy, maybe you've heard of him. Just some numbers from a quarterback and where they currently rank in the National Football League. Please present this, if you will, graphic people. Points per game. Who is this quarterback? The NFL rank for points a game for this team is fifth.
Starting point is 00:44:32 Top five points a game. Well, maybe it's not him. What about the yards per game? He has a lot of say with that. Oh, third. Completion percentage for this quarterback. Where does he rank in the national? Oh, he's fifth.
Starting point is 00:44:47 Passing yards per game, maybe it's the receivers. Maybe it's not. But, oh, he's third. Passing touchdowns in the NFL. Third, passer raiding in the NFL. Sixth. I thought Brady retired.
Starting point is 00:45:06 Those were goat numbers. I wonder who this is. Let's see. Who's the quarterback? Jared Goff. So let me get this straight. Brock Purdy has a fan club. Dak has a support group.
Starting point is 00:45:19 So does Kirk Cousins. Baker Mayfield. In Detroit, it's, I love Ben Johnson. You know, Jemir Gibbs, Sam Leport is the best rookie tight end I've ever seen. Amaran St. Brown is underrated. The culture Dan Campbell's created is second to none. Or maybe it's Jared Goff. You know, maybe it's Jared Goff.
Starting point is 00:45:40 Number one pick. Brock Purdy's the last pick, and he's got support groups. You criticize Brock Purdy. You question maybe it's Shanahan and the weapons. You get nothing but heat. Jared Goff, well, yeah, Ben Johnson is established as a great, really? I mean, I'm not denying that Jamir Gibbs and Sam LaPorteur have been terrific, and I have said I think the front office for Detroit is money.
Starting point is 00:46:07 But once again, Jared Goff is winning a lot of games and just won the division for the first time in 30 years they did in Detroit. Matt Stafford couldn't in 12 years and had some good coaches like Jim Caldwell. Just saying, I said this week, the arguments about Lamar Jackson, watch the games. Look at his influence. Jared Goff, I've said this for years, throws one of the prettiest balls in the league. If I told you, Matt Ryan with a bigger, better arm, Matt Ryan won an MVP. So Goff won with McVeigh.
Starting point is 00:46:41 He's winning with Dan Campbell. He has had some good left tackles. I won't deny that. But, I mean, Amaran St. Brown? Good. I like the rookies, but they're rookies. Rams did have a good O-line for the record. Brady had one for 20 years in New England.
Starting point is 00:46:59 Aaron Rogers never had a bad O-line in Green Bay. DAC has never had a bad O-line in Dallas. This one's better than I thought they would be. So O-line, I'm not going to discredit you because you have reasonable protection. I'm not going to discredit you. Well, he's had, you know, he's got these offensive coaches. So is Aaron Rogers before he got to New York. York. He had Mike Holmgren, Matt Lefleur. I'm just saying, we line up to support Baker,
Starting point is 00:47:27 and that's fine, and Dak, and that's fine, and cousins, and Purdy. Now, Russ, he's got everybody in Denver. It's not his fault. Blame Peyton. Jared Goss pretty good. He's like top five, top three and everything. Now, I will not in any way argue that it's all him. I really love Detroit's front office. Back to back to back drafts. Really good. But Jared can spin it. He's pretty good. Detroit doesn't win the division. It's just not what they do. Pistons are a mess. Tigers are a mess.
Starting point is 00:48:00 Lions historically are a mess. Jared Goff arrives. Good GM. It's funny what happens. All right, J. Mack. Blazing 5's done. One hour from now, little before that, J. Max got his picks. By the way, did you touch the Washington-San-Francisco game
Starting point is 00:48:17 in Blais and 5? I thought strongly about San Francisco. I hate big favorites. But if you go and listen to Greg Coasell yesterday, he said they moved the ball up and down the field in the first half against Baltimore. They just had a bad pick. Washington's defense is anemic. Well, the report out of Washington is Jacoby Brissette, who was slated to start hamstring injury today. They may have to go back to Sam Howell. Well, Sam Hill's not. He's not what? He's fine. They're not going to, he's not the future. He's a backup. He's fine. They just benched him, I think, again. Hasn him Brissette come in like twice in the last? Well, you know,
Starting point is 00:48:51 I said earlier this year on Sam Hal, I said there's something there. And then I watched more of them and I said there's not enough there. There was something, but it was not enough. There's nothing wrong with Sam Howell being a career long backup. He could easily be chased Daniel out of the 15-year career. A really capable backup. He's not a starter. After watching this year, I would agree.
Starting point is 00:49:10 I mean, we saw Desmond Ritter. Ritter's not a starter. He's not a starter. Taylor Heineke is okay. He's a valuable backup. Ednaudle's not a starter. Everybody gets their chance. You know, and I'm sure Howell's ticked off like, well, I mean, you
Starting point is 00:49:21 got Eric Bienemy, who knows a little bit about offense, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. You got some weapons. Offenses line's not great. I mean, how many years do you want to give this guy a chance in Washington? Well, again, defensive coaches, and it's my thing. I think Pete Carroll's a legend, but how many years are going to convince yourself, Gino's going to hoist a trophy? You're not in this thing to win games. Pete wins national championships and Super Bowls. I just think offensive coaches have moved off Alex Smith, Gough, and Garoppolo. Sean Payton's moving off for us. Defensive coaches have this philosophy. Just cut down on the turnover as we can win with defense.
Starting point is 00:49:57 And it was Ron Rivera. And you can't. You can't do that anymore. Gotta score a lot of points. Gotta score a lot of point. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
Starting point is 00:50:14 help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and Hell Ed writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
