This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast.
Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule.

On the Look Back at it podcast.
From 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 was big to me.
I'm Sam Jay.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we
survived it with our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year.
It was a wild year.
I don't think there's a more important year for Black.
people.

It's the herd.

IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1.
You've got a lot of choices out there.
We always appreciate you choosing us.
Former New York Giant Victor Cruz is going to join us in New York.
The Giants are off to a great start.
This is an interesting game.
Go down to Jacksonville.
They're scoring points.
So you're going to have that offensive at Jacksonville and that defensive front of the New York Giants.
Very interesting matchup.
Now, you are in late October, so the weather is not a problem.
for a northern team.
I think this game is going to be strangely entertaining.
That Giants Ravens game, I watched the replay of the other night.
I think it was NFL Network.
I watched it again.
That was a wildly entertaining game.
Kind of lucky for the Giants.
You got a little bit of luck.
In this league, you'll win games.
I don't care how you win them.
You got to win games, and the Ravens have been a bad fourth quarter team.
Can the Giants get lucky and come back in every single game this season?
Listen, you take it when you get it and you're frustrated when you don't.
That's J. Mack, of course.
So I had a very, very hot week last week.
25 games, 15 and 10 so far.
I feel good.
The dogs are barking.
Here is our Blazing 5.
That's a hot one.
Let's blaze it up.
Fire it's Collins, Blaz and Five.
Browns and Ravens.
My one favorite I like is Baltimore minus six and a half.
They've led every game by 10 points.
It's a top five scoring offense, and their defense has a takeaway in eight straight games.
But this game's about Cleveland.
they're banged up on the O line, banged up on defense, and Jacoby Brissette, the leagues figured him out.
Last three weeks, he's completing 55% of his throws.
He's 0 and 3, and he's not always getting great protection.
Also, Cleveland's defense due to Miles Garrett, Denzel Ward dinged up, they've been a terrible fourth quarter defense.
The Ravens are furious.
They believe they gave a game away last week.
they come home and they beat convincingly,
2820 over the Browns.
It will not be this close, though.
They'll control the game.
Packers at Commanders.
You know, Green Bay may win, but I'm going to take the four and a half points.
Taylor Heineke had a great game the last time he faced the Packers,
and he's completed 75% of his throws in three of his last four home starts.
He's a gamer. He can play.
The Packers have their fewest points scored in any six games span.
and Aaron Rogers history.
And in second halfs, the last couple of weeks, they're a mess.
David Boktiari's all banged up.
Randall Cobb out, Christian Watson's got a hamstring issue.
They have no second gear.
And their defense is not pressuring the quarterback.
They're the only team allowing opposing quarterbacks in the league to completely 70% of their passes.
I think Washington, I'm going to take the points.
I'll take the Packers and Aaron to make something happen late to win.
But 27-24 Green Bay take the points.
Jets said Broncos.
Jets, I'll take the Jets plus one.
They won't need it.
They'll win outright.
Listen, this franchise, they've taken the ball to Zach Wilson's hands.
He doesn't have any giveaways in five of his last six starts.
And they're giving the ball to their running back Bruce, Brees Hall, who's great, 400 scrimmage yards the last three weeks.
This is a defense run first team, and they've taken the ball out of Zach's hands to make mistakes.
But the story of this team is defense.
Last three weeks, gaining confidence, playing their butts off,
and they will dominate a mess of an offensive line in Denver.
Even when Denver moves the ball, they're atrocious in the red zone.
Is it coaching?
Is it Russell?
Is it the O line?
I don't know what it is, but it is.
So they're going to settle for field goals.
Even when they move it, I take the Jets to win 24, 23.
I like their optimism, energy, and health right now.
Chiefs at 49ers.
I'm taking the Niners.
They've won six straight home games, and Garoppolo is always better at home, and they're getting healthier.
They're averaging 7.3 yards after the catch.
That's best in the NFL.
The Chiefs are not a great tackling team.
But the Niners' defense is getting healthier.
And they are money, baby.
And in this game, I think Nick Bosa's back.
Jimmy Ward could be back.
The Chiefs have allowed three-plus touchdown.
touchdowns in five or six games most in the NFL.
This is a leaky defense.
And I know, ah, they just lost to Buffalo.
They lost a Buffalo because Buffalo on that game was a better team.
San Francisco, though not completely healthy, at home is the better team here.
And they beat the Chiefs 3027.
Seahawks at Chargers.
It's an interesting one.
I initially leaned Chargers.
but I'm going to take the Seahawks for a couple of reasons.
We have to be honest here.
Gino Smith is playing really well.
72% completion percentage, 13 touchdowns, two picks.
With these new rookie tackles in Seattle, both are fantastic.
Kenneth Walker, they have a run game that's two-tiered.
And the Chargers, even when they've won,
three of their four wins have come by less than six,
so they're in a lot of close games.
Justin Herbert got pressured 15 times last week.
their offensive lines still not completely healthy, and they're allowing almost six yards of play.
I think it's a really wildly entertaining game that can go either way.
But we've got to be honest here, these rookie offensive tackles for Seattle, Kenneth Walker,
Rashad Penny, this offense now is for real.
We've seen multiple weeks of it.
We got a little upset here.
I think the Seahawks win a wildly entertaining game, 28 to 24.
I was talked into that yesterday.
That's why I told you.
I think it's fair.
With the Chargers, even when they win, win close.
You've got to be careful about giving teams that, you know,
given the Chargers, relinquishing points.
So once again, outside of the Ravens, I like underdogs.
Scoring is down across the league by seven and a half points per game from two years ago.
And big plays are down significantly.
So the last couple of weeks, I'm going to take points and see how it pans out.
Victor Cruz was a pro bowler, a Super Bowl champ, six years in the NFL, all with the Giants.
So I stayed away from the Giants this week, but I will say this.
Whatever their ceiling is, I do think what they're doing is clever.
I can see the coaching.
I think it's sustainable.
Are you surprised so quickly, Victor, that Daible has sort of, I mean, let's be honest about Donald Jones.
This is the best Daniels ever played.
surprised it's worked this quickly?
I am surprised.
I'm surprised it worked this quickly.
I'm surprised that the players have bought into the system,
have bought into what Dayball has brought to the table,
has brought into what that coaching staff has put before them.
I think, you know, these are all culture wins.
Like, maybe the last one was probably the one when you're like, okay,
the Giants may be a good team.
But anyone before that, you're just kind of like, we won, but I don't know if we're good
or not, you know what I'm saying?
But it's all coaching.
It's all dayball.
It's all about them.
leaving and what he's telling them and how he's preparing them week in and week out.
You know, you know the culture of the Giants.
People in New York, it's like the Yankee fan base.
They've been season ticket holders forever.
I think they like the way they're playing.
I think Daibel is like an every man.
And when you're a New York giant, there's not a lot of fluff here, man.
They expect you to go in.
What do you make of Daniel Jones?
There's a little Eli Manning here.
I guess my question is this.
at Mahomes and Herbert and Lamar, and I look at all these guys. To you, what is Daniel Jones?
What could he be? Or is this kind of it? Well, it's tough because the years that he's been with the
Giants, he's never really had the receiving core or the amount of weapons around him to really
see what type of player he can be, to really see what type of quarterback he can be. But I think
he's just, he's an above-average game manager, if I had to put a title on it. I think he's not
just a game manager. I think he can do a little bit more than Ex-Denotes. I mean, he led a 14-play
drive for points against the Ravens and another 12-play drive to seal it at the end. It was just like
he can do the things you want him to do, but I don't know if you can put him in that Mahomes and
that Justin Herbert category because from a skill set perspective, he's just not that. We just
haven't seen that level of gameplay from him specifically.
Sequin Barclay is a great player. How surprised are you? Not only has he been effective,
but, I mean, they have just leaned on him, man.
He is, you know, this after that injury, we were like,
I was like, I don't think he's ever going to be the guy again.
How surprised are you?
He is the guy.
I'm very surprised.
I mean, for a running back to have that type of injury, you know,
you see them come back, but they kind of come back as a shell on themselves
or they kind of take a little time to kind of get their bearings.
He came back like, I'm ready to rock, get me the ball,
and I'm ready to put this team on my shoulders.
And that's what he's been doing.
He's our best player on that football field.
Yep.
And he's making the plays and making sure that his team is counting on him to be there
week in and week out.
And so far, he's handling it, man.
So I'm going to defend the Niners on the McCaffrey trade, and here's why.
Very rarely in the NFL, do you get a team that's got great young players and great
veteran players?
And you have this really good chemistry.
And I'm a big believer like you can never predict because this sport has a regulated
level of violence.
Guys get hurt on one play.
So when you've got this great mix of, I mean, come on, you've got some Brandon I,
Yooks, an unbelievable town.
Then you got George Kittles older and Quaun Alexander.
You got some old guys.
Trent Williams older.
How many years left?
I get the McCaffrey deal.
When you first saw it, did you think, dang, four draft picks.
What was your initial interpretation?
My initial reaction was like, boy, they gave up a lot.
But if you think about where Carolina's at, they're in full rebuild.
They're trying to stockpile picks and kind of get into the next couple years and see how they can transform into a holistic team in the next few years or sort of probably going to be in the quarterback market come this offseason.
So they're just trying to get ready for that.
But on the Niners side, I'm like, whoa, they got two Debo-Samuel-esque type of players that you can put anywhere, put them in the backfield, make plays for you, split them out, get mismatches all over the field.
And Debo, he may not like being in the backfield as much.
So now they got McCaffrey, who's used to being in the back field that actually enjoys being back there,
knows how to run between the tackles as well.
So they got another weapon in their plethora of weapons offensively to put out in the football field
to make it tough on defenses to try to just cue in on just one, two, three guys.
So when you play with an Eli, and I think Eli is so subtly funny that you would get it when you're around him.
Like he's not as outwardly funny as Peyton, but he's a very smart, clever, funny guy.
he's not a yeller and a screamer.
But I saw Kyler last night get into it with Cliff.
And my takeaway is this is not high school or college.
There's a lot of pressure on him.
He's getting whacked by the media.
That team has got to win this game.
And I'm like, folks, sports is live and it's raw.
You always worry about yelling at coaches.
But how often in your career, six years, practice games,
how often does the volume get to that point?
Never necessarily on game day.
And also, if I even try to talk to Coach Kaufman that way,
I don't think it would have ended very well, to be honest.
They probably wouldn't end it very well.
But when I see Kingsbury, right, when I see Cliff and I see Kyler out there,
you got to think, Kingsbury had been recruiting him since he was in high school.
Right.
They know each other and through college.
Now they're in the process.
This is a family, it's a family-like atmosphere between them too.
So when I looked at, I looked at, oh, these are just two like Kyler talking to his uncle,
tell him to chill and calm down.
I got this.
You know, I got this under control.
It felt like a family type of spat that just happened in real time.
I think that's what we saw.
But you got to think about these guys have known each other forever.
They've grown up in the business, sort of speak, together to a certain degree.
And I think all you saw was, you know, two family members,
hash it out in the field, making sure everybody's calm down and we got everything squared away.
Yeah, that's a great take.
I never thought of that.
You're right.
They've known each other.
They're comfortable barking a little bit.
They've known each other for over 10 years.
All right.
Exactly.
OBJ.
Now, I said this.
I said, I think Green Bay is the spot because Aaron historically trusts veteran receivers.
He trusts Randall Cobb.
He's struggling with young receivers.
By the way, Brady did not love young receivers.
You know, he liked it.
It took four years for Edelman to work.
So, I mean, when you look at OBJ, do you think there's a culture, a team, a quarterback he fits with?
I think there's a couple.
I think I love Kansas City.
I think they're just missing that, you know, obviously that Tyreek Hill void of that big play threat to just give him the ball in space and he can take it to distance.
I think Odell provides that, given healthy and all those things.
And I agree with you.
I think Green Bay.
I think they are dying for someone to kind of lead that receiver room and kind of get everybody together.
I think Aaron Rogers is Aaron Rogers, right?
He's going to get those guys as prepared as they can and lean on those young guys.
But you need that one leader that's been in the trenches that understands the game of football.
the highest level that can make plays.
And with Aaron Rogers, the type of arm that he has, him and Odell will be sweet music, making
sweet music together.
But Mahomes, if we want to win now, I think Odell needs to go to Kansas City and be part of that
receiving core and get those guys together.
And that's that next step that they can take offensive.
Yeah, and OBJ proved it last year.
He knows football.
You put him in about a week later.
He figures it out.
finally you created the salsa touchdown celebration now they have something i'm i'm told called
the gritty are you a are you bothered by it is it a is it a lousy knockoff what do you make of the
gritty no i love the gritty man the kids are all for it and the kids love it it's a worldwide
phenomenon now i mean i just saw chuck pogano doing it in his room somewhere like it's it's
officially someone said it's officially the macarena now like we got to put it to bed and find
something new now. But I love it, man. The kids love it. I'm all for it. Victor,
what a pleasure to see you. Great takes and insight. Continued success. He's on the first
thing's first set, so I bet he's on that show today, and it's great seeing you. Likewise, Colin.
Thank you so much, man. Victor Cruz added some spice to the NFL. Great to see him against. A great
point on Cliff and Kyler. That's a great point, which I didn't think of. They've known each other
for a decade. You can always yell at people you've known for a while. Right. It's like family.
What? You don't like that? I get news.
for you. By next year, I'll be barking at you in between segments.
If I started yelling at you about something on the show, would I be here?
Oh, you've only been here like three weeks. You'd be in big trouble.
But a year from now, if you were upset and you scream at Ryan or me, like, okay, you're
part of the family. You're not really there yet. You're kind of like, I don't know what
are you right now. Joy became family, and Joy left us, and we were sad in the family,
and you're the new guy that came in, and we're checking you out a little bit. We kind of like you.
Well, listen, on the basketball court, if you're not defending like you should or
talking on screens, I'm going to probably yell at you. And you're not going to do anything
because I'm right.
I don't know about it on this show, though.
You're the potential in-law to be.
Like you're visiting for the weekend.
We'll see if we keep you.
We're not sure.
But we like what we see so far.
You're fun at dinner.
You got your smart.
I'm a good hang.
You haven't asked for a hand in marriage yet, but it's very close.
That's not happening.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.

To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we
don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.

because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,

Absolutely.

Beerling sends the first one in the year.
Soto's back on it.
He lost it in the sun.
The sun aided double.
Bang.
He rips it down the line.
One Soto has his move upside down.
And the parties pick back up in San Diego.

Way back.

One game apiece, the scene shifts to Philadelphia for a pivotal game three.
When the Padres and the Phillies, coverage begins tonight at 6.30 Eastern.
3.30 Pacific, only on FS1 and the Fox Sports app.
A lot of stars.
You know, it's funny about this.
Cincinnati historically has been, like, kind of reluctant to trade picks.
Like, the Bengals of all has been super conservative.
One of the big moves they've ever made was drafting Jamar Chase when people thought,
thought they were going to get offensive linemen.
It got him to the Super Bowl.
Green Bay has been unbelievably conservative, not going for the flashy wide receiver,
the talented wide receiver.
Wouldn't you like Christian McCaffrey today?
Because San Francisco has Debo and him, and they're going to pound you when you face each other potentially.
Like everybody's sitting around, I have this rule in life.
It's the I'll figure it out rule.
I'll figure it out.
You can't plan everything in life.
If you trust yourself, you'll figure it out.
San Francisco basically bailed on this next draft.
What about, they'll figure it out.
Lynch is smart.
Jed York is smart.
Kyle Shanahan's smart.
Look at their roster.
They'll figure it out.
By the way, they may get an unbelievable offer for somebody and they just say,
all right, we'll trade one of our great linebackers.
We'll trade one of our great safeties.
They've got three safeties they like.
You figure it out.
but McCaffrey's not available very much.
Vaughn Miller's not on the market very much.
So when you get the opportunity, you roll with it,
and then we'll figure it out.
They did get fortunate figuring out the Jimmy Garoppolo.
Remember, nobody was wanted him because of the shoulder surgery.
Trey Lance gets hurt, and they got Jimmy Garoppolo waiting in the wings.
They restructure his contract.
They're probably the best team in the NFC right now.
Oh, God. On paper.
I know the Eagles fans are not going to like to hear that.
But they are.
I'm not afraid of Sam Frank going into Philadelphia in January.
and winning that football game.
We've seen them going to Green Bay.
Yeah.
Shanahan's got a good team.
And so, again, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, though, in this league, the smartest people, you know, the saints were constantly redoing contracts and the rams are constantly redoing contracts and the niner's are getting compensatory picks.
If you really trust yours, everybody yaps, a lot of yappers out there big, I'm this, I'm that.
Do you really, really trust yourself?
Then go for it.
be vulnerable.
You'll figure it out.
That's what the Niners are saying.
We'll figure it out.
We trust our brain power.
We trust our coaching.
We trust our scouting.
We'll figure it out.
But McCaffrey's not on the market very long.
By the way, the Rams, another big swinging team,
they were calling on this too.
According to Peter Schrager,
I saw this morning, they were calling it.
They're another.
We'll figure it out.
By the way, it does leave you a little vulnerable.
if you don't have any picks in the draft.
But folks, the smart team, the teams like the Bears can never figure out the cap.
They literally can't afford anybody.
The smart teams, they always figure out a way to get draft picks.
I mean, I remember a couple years ago, I got to give them credit.
A few years ago, you know, Seattle didn't have a lot of draft picks and they were trying to figure some stuff out.
All of a sudden, John Snyder and Pete Carroll, it was like a week later.
I felt like they found four draft picks.
If you trust yourself, you'll figure.
out. You remember the website I started? I was working at a magazine, Colin, and I'd
started this website on the side, and I decided, I'm going to quit the magazine job. I think
I can make this website happen. The first check I got was for like $97 for the month pay. And I'm
like, oh my gosh, all my friends, you know, my future wife's family was like, oh, you started a website,
did you, Jason? How's that working out? I was like, we're going to figure it out. Worked out
all right. Yeah, that's just, the Niners trust themselves. They trust their process. They
They trust their knowledge.
They trust their scouts.
They trust their instincts.
I'm for people like that.
Go look around sports.
The teams that drive you nuts are Green Bay.
Packer fan this morning.
Would you like to have Christian McCaffrey?
Why don't you start figuring stuff out?
Why don't you take a big swing on OBJ?
Because I got news for you.
That's another weapon for the Niners.
I'm not sure what weapon Green Bay has now on the perimeter.
What do they have?
They don't use Aaron Jones enough.
J. Mack with the news.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
All right, Colin.
Let's get started, obviously, with the big trade.
Christian McCaffrey is gone from the Panthers.
Carolina, remember, they were just listening to calls.
They were not out there pushing McCaffrey, who they loved.
He was their franchise guy.
You know, face of the franchise, I don't know who you go to watch the Carolina Panthers for now.
There's really no face.
It's a Baker Mayfield.
Before the season, we thought Atlanta, Seattle,
We didn't really talk about Carolina because they had Baker and we thought, oh, they'll be competitive.
They're the tank.
They're awful.
They're the tank.
Christian McCaffrey posted a thank you to fans after the trade.
Here's what he said.
I'm forever grateful for all the people who have helped me these past five and a half years make it so special for me.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Carolina.
I will always love you.
Keep pounding.
And now he's back to the Bay Area.
He went to Stanford, of course.
I think he's going to be a little happier.
Let me tell you something.
If you think this is a bad move, what does?
do you think in the Rams front office, Les Need and McVeigh saw that last night on Twitter?
And they went.
Probably a lot of F-Bounds.
Or do you think the Rams went like this?
Well, they gave up a bunch of draft picks.
No.
They went, oh, crap.
Colin, these draft picks that they gave up, just think about it.
Sam Fran's going to be one of the best teams in the NFC.
A second round pick is like the 58th pick in the draft.
And then the deep third.
Oh, yeah.
89th pick in the draft.
Come on.
That's nothing.
McCaffrey's a star.
He's not available a lot.
But remember, in Carolina, he was more of a workhorse.
He is a chess piece.
He and Debo are, and by the way, they're getting Elijah Mitchell back.
Coming back in two weeks.
And they also have Wilson.
They have somebody else.
By the way, when you line up Debo Samuel on one side, Christian McCaffrey, anywhere on the field.
Oh, by the way, George Kittle, Brandon Ayuk.
Like, that is a lot of weapons.
And Jimmy Garapolo is going to be severely elevated, I think, with this unit.
They're the best team in the NFC.
I'm sorry to say that.
I think they are.
Yeah.
All right.
Next up, let's go to the Arizona Cardinals.
We really haven't touched on the game last night.
DeAndre Hopkins made his debut.
Wow.
Pretty good one.
Ten catches against a beleaguered Saints secondary.
Back after the six-game suspension, both Kingsbury and Kyla Murray noted that he bolstered the offense last night.
Here's what they said.
You saw it, right?
I mean, it was a different-looking deal out there with him and the confidence that other guys is around and play with.
It's good to have him back.
I think once he really gets in shape, you know,
gets back in a run a route, it's comfortable in offense.
He can really do some things.
Great.
You know, his energy, his, I mean, obviously he's talented as ever.
But just having him out there, he was, you know, didn't look like he had any rust.
You know, knocked it off real quick if he had any.
But just his communication, you know, his feel for the game.
I mean, all of that, you can't put a price tag on it.
By the way, Zach Ertz and DeAndre Hopkins veteran targets, they had the Knights.
By the way, Kylo-Marie attempted 29 passes.
14 of them went to DeAndre Hopkins.
He caught 10 for over 100 yards.
If you can't stop him, why stop going to him?
Now, listen, I don't want to revisit the Kyler-Murie versus Cliff Kingsbury thing,
but there was weird body language from Cliff Kingsbury after the game about all the questions.
They had just won.
They looked the best they have all season, and Kingsbury looked kind of defeated and beaten and unhappy.
Colin, I'm just curious.
If the right college job comes up, what are the odds you think Cliff Kingsbury says,
I don't need to deal with this guy, this quarterback, who doesn't want to do his own?
and is F-bombing me on national television.
Well, I don't think you worry about that.
That's life.
I think college football,
I think Cliff has,
would like to have a little bit of a social life, right?
He's played in the NFL.
He's coached in the NFL.
College football, you don't have a lot of time off with recruiting.
I think coaches, unless you have a Michigan,
Bama, Georgia, USC,
unless you have one of those eight to ten college jobs,
most guys like NFL.
I would stay in the United States.
college. I get college. You have more power over personnel, no crazy billionaire owner.
But Kingsbury's not, I don't think, going to get one of those jobs. I would doubt,
although Oklahoma, who knows, but my guess is he would rather stay here. Listen, Kyler Murray,
ask yourself this. Right now in the NFL, take out the Chiefs with Mahomes,
take out Buffalo with Josh Allen, take out Herbert, Burrow, Lamar Jackson, like five, five guys,
five, six guys. And maybe I'm missing one.
Almost everybody in the league
looks at Arizona and thinks,
well, we don't know about Kingsbury.
They would take a call on Kyler Murray.
Now, because the feeling around the league is,
I mean, God, Kingsbury couldn't win with Patrick Mahomes in college in the Big 12.
And I don't know if Cliffs battered, I don't think he's great,
but I don't think he's incompetent. He's certainly capable.
He got him to the playoffs last year.
But for all the people that are banging on Kyler Murray,
outside of the obvious top five or six,
almost everybody in the league would take a call
if you heard Kyler was on the market.
He would upgrade your team.
Do you think they'd move off Kyler before Kingsbury?
I mean, Kingsbury's dealing with a GM
who's kind of incompetent, the owner's shaky.
That's what I'm saying.
Everybody in the league right now
doesn't love what Kyler's doing.
Nobody disputes his talent.
Almost everybody questions whether Kingsbury is the guy.
So what I'm saying is you could, you could, if you, I'm just saying, I'm defending Kyler here, for all the critics of it, outside of about five teams, almost everybody would take a call of Kyler's on the market.
So if you think Kyler's the problem, what was Arizona the hour before they got him?
Bad and unwatchable.
Josh Rosen bad, yeah.
And they were just unwatchable.
Like owners want you to watch their team and buy their merchandise as well.
There is a watchability factor.
Lamar makes them very watch.
Herbert makes the Chargers very watchable.
Kyler does some things that drive me crazy.
Aaron does some things in Green Bay that drive me crazy.
That said, there's no duplicate on the market.
You just deal with some drama.
Or you move on.
You say, I don't like this owner who's a little kooky.
You got a GM who's made a lot of questionable decisions.
I'm telling you, this Kyler Murray stuff like him and Kingsbury, something's going on there.
Arizona State is an open college football job.
Cliff Kingsbury is a guy who likes warm weather, likes the social life, Tempe, Arizona.
Come on.
Don't rule it out.
We'll clip this off and if it happens.
In my entire life, I've heard what a great job Arizona State is.
Show me all the Rose Bowl.
How many guys are calling for Cliff Kingsbury's job at Arizona State after two years?
Nobody.
They're talking about Sean Payton already.
Final story, Colin.
Bailey Zappy has won both of his starts since Mack Jones has been out.
Belichick said today, they're still taking it day by day to see who the starter will be Monday night against the Bears.
And listen, coach Matt Eberflews to the-
He says he doesn't see much of a difference between the two quarterbacks.
Well, I feel that really this offense is the Patriots offense.
So I don't really see a big difference when I watch the tape before or after.
To me, it's the offense that they're running.
And it's their style and they're going to stick with that.
So I said.
It's a shot at Mack Jones.
Hey, unless he plays crappy, I'm sticking with Bailey's app.
Oh, here we go with the rhyming.
I'm just telling you, this campaign manager, Mack is a weak incumbent.
You can't tell me when you watch them, you see a major golf between Mac and Bailey.
So to me, whichever one you want to play, I don't care.
But right now, they're playing better with Bailey.
I don't care who you play.
But I'm telling you, if I'm sitting there watching it, and I think Mac's probably, if you go deeper and deeper and deeper,
Mac is a little bigger, he's probably a little better.
I don't doubt that.
But there's no Mahomes to Case Keenham or Josh Allen to Case Keenham Golf here.
Whoever plays better of these two, I'm playing them.
Somebody suggested to me that Mack Jones
should go to the music guy at practice today
and have them cue up return of the Mac
as he jogs onto the field,
letting him know this is my team.
I'm back. I'm Mack Jones.
I don't think it's his team.
That was my theme song in college if you wanted to know.
These are the kind of things our audience is starving for.
J. Mack with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd-Lie News.
was the other, I'm the campaign manager
for Bailey Zappy. I'm happy with Zappy.
Unless he's crappy, I go with Zappy.
And Mac is whack.
So I always said, you know you have a
franchise quarterback. When if
he gets hurt and the backup comes in, you take
about 25 to 30 percent of the playbook and you get rid of it.
If Mahomes goes out, that gets way less clever
in Kansas City. Who is it? Chase Daniels
a backup? He's with the Chargers.
Chase Daniels is
I think he's on multiple teams at once.
He's on like nine teams in the league right now.

To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because,
a crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

So when I was watching Arizona last night,
I felt like I was watching the best team in the NFL that won't make the playoffs.
I don't trust them.
I don't know about their coach.
I don't trust them situationally.
but they are so fast and so athletic and twitchy
and they've got so many unique players.
They're really fun to watch.
But as you know, the margins are very close
in professional football. Seattle's
way better than we thought. The Niners just added
a piece. The Rams are getting healthier.
I don't, you know, it's interesting with Arizona.
A couple teams are better than we thought in their division.
Rams aren't as good but getting healthy.
And I look at them when I watch them.
I can't see the concept. I can't see the
theme. I just see Kyler Murray making a bunch of plays. And their schedule now gets really tough.
At Minnesota, they have to go play Seattle, who's playing great at Los Angeles, Niners, Chargers.
This is the tough spot. And I just don't know. I don't know what to make of them when I watch them.
And we had Greg CoSell on yesterday, and he said the same thing.
They are a mystery to me when I watch their tape. And I'm just being honest.
Look, every team has a plan. When I watch their tape, I struggle at,
time sitting in my office here at NFL films trying to figure out what it is they're trying
to get done rhythmically there's just no sense of continuity and stability to what they're getting
done and last year and the year before they i think were among the league leaders and playing with
four wide receivers on the field they've been hurt at the wide receiver position they get
de hop back tonight um a j green is back maybe that will be their answer they've been a difficult
both offense to watch.
Yeah, I think they're going to end up being the best team, the best roster that doesn't make
the playoffs.
The other thing is the Niners went out and got Christian McCaffrey.
So I think what they really did as the league pivots to offense, I think a big part of this
was showing you the respect for McVeigh and Andy Reid.
So Buffalo didn't need another pass rusher.
They had a great pass rush.
And they added Von Miller.
That's the ultimate respect to Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid.
We're already good at pass rush.
We have to be great.
And Von Miller last weekend, you can argue, was the difference in that game.
San Francisco's like, we don't want McBay to get him.
But when we play a Mahomes, like we've done before in the Super Bowl,
we don't want to leave any, anything to chance.
We know we have Debo and Brandon Iyuk and then Elijah Mitchell and a great defense.
Wouldn't it be great if we could keep Mahomes off the field for another couple drives?
Remember, the Niners lead the NFL right now with all these injuries.
The fewest three and outs in the league.
So like the bills that added to their strength pass rush with Vaughn Miller,
they had a really good pass rush.
They said to beat Mahomes, it's got to be great.
What San Francisco is saying, we already are the best in the league at converting third downs.
Like, that's what we do.
Keep Mahomes off the field.
But if McAfrey can get us four or five more conversions, we can't just be really good at that.
We have to be uniquely gifted.
Debo, McCaffrey, Kittle.
We have to keep Mahomahe.
off the field. I thought this move and the Vaughn Miller move are really showing a sign of respect
for Mahomes and Andy Reed. They added restraints. They didn't try to solve weaknesses. That's not
what Buffalo did. Buffalo is like, here's what we're good at. We have to be literally unblockable.
And the Niners are like, yeah, we're really good at converting third downs to first downs. We don't
get three and outs. We have to be even better. That's when you do, that's what you do when
Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, the smartest play design,
arguably and the most talented quarterback probably.
When they're together, that's the respect you show.
Chris Long earlier today about the McCaffrey move by the Niners.
I knew the price would be high for this guy.
And, you know, it's kind of like when you're gambling and you're down and then you've got to chase a little bit.
Like, that's what they're doing.
You know, I feel like they probably feel not so great about the Trey Lance pick, if we're being honest.
I mean, he could develop and that sort of thing.
But they know time's ticking.
and a lot of people are saying they got fleeced, well, not this year.
As long as he stays healthy, you're up there in the Bay Area and you're saying like,
why don't we, why don't we cash in on this window?
I think Colin, you're exactly right.
I think, you know, when there is a window, you do owe it to those players to go try to win.
Yeah, and I always feel like this on big trades.
What did your rivals think of it?
Right?
Like, what did your rivals think?
I got news for you.
When Pete Carroll left USC, everybody had a big sigh of relief in the PAC 12.
You know, when when Urban Meyer left the SEC, like, you know, it's like, oh, that, that, that, that, now we can win those games.
You know, Alabama had Sabin, but there was a lot of teams that Urban had beat up when Urban leaves Ohio State, right?
Everybody's like, oh, we have, we have a chance now.
I mean, he went like two years, didn't lose a conference game or whatever it was.
I mean, it was like, whatever it was.
how did the league and all the other coaches and coordinators and GMs react to the Niners getting him?
They didn't care about the draft picks.
They were like, I guarantee him Buffalo and Kansas City and Tampa.
It's like, you know, those guys are looking around.
L.A. is looking around thinking, man, that is a lot of dudes on that offense.
And the defense is great.
And the coaching is great.
The Niners, how people react to, you know, you can bang on Jim Harbaugh all you want.
Go look at the previous coaches at Michigan.
If he left Michigan today, I got news for you.
There's a lot of athletic directors and coaches in the Big Ten going, thank you.
Because he's built Michigan into a powerhouse.
The reaction around the league last night, wasn't people talking about draft picks.
It was like, good God.
God, they gave Shanahan another weapon, another chess piece.
That's kind of a sign of respect.
Last night, J-Mack went to the Laker game.
It may have set a record for the most shots ever taken by guards on one team and missed.
What was the number last night?
So Russell Westbrook, Kendrick Nunn, right, and Patrick Beverly were combined one of 25 shooting the basketball, one for 16 from three.
John Wall, by the way, who hadn't played in like two years.
He played pretty well.
Came back and had 15 points last night for the Clippers.
Listen, the Lakers were competitive in that game.
It was like tied in the fourth quarter.
They played a pretty good defense.
And then the Clippers decided we're going to let Russell Westbrook shoot the ball late.
He bricks a three.
And Lakers couldn't get stops.
That's a wrap.
I just, I need to ask you this because it ate at us all night.
Anthony Davis, watch him.
Why isn't he in the paint more, Colin?
He's floating around the three-point line, half the possession.
go post up, man.
It's very frustrating if you're a Lagos fan.
It would be okay if like a Kevin lover, a Bosch, or some of these bigs,
he had developed a really nice three-point shot.
The issue is, and I don't have an explanation,
ever since the COVID championship bubble year,
go look at his three-point shooting.
It has gone off a cliff.
So is he not putting the time in?
I don't know what it is.
So again, Anthony Davis,
I don't have a problem with my big going outside.
I really don't.
I have a problem when my big going outside shoots the reason, can't hit him.
I mean, we've seen Janus develop a better three-point shot.
We've seen bigs.
And Bede, he'll hit a jumper occasionally.
I made a little 15-foot.
I would prefer my bigs around the basket.
But Bosch moved out.
He could shoot.
Kevin Love moved out.
He could shoot.
I don't know what the answer is.
Anthony Davis has been on like a two-year, three-year run here.
his percentages from the perimeter are terrible.
So Colin, we know they're not a good three-point shooting team.
That's well-established.
We both want Buddy Heald and Miles Turner here.
So guess what?
If you're missing every three-point shot you're taking,
they shot like 20% from deep.
Get Anthony Davis on the block, pound it in there,
get a bucket.
Do something to stop the bleeding.
It's like when the Houston Rockets
missed 27 straight threes against the Warriors.
Remember that in Game 7?
Get a bucket.
They couldn't get a bucket.
Like Anthony Davis, get on the block.
Outside of Steph Curry, the warrior starters didn't
play a lot of minutes. Kauai didn't play a lot of minutes. So you watch the Warriors and the
Clippers beg the Lakers to shoot three and not play their starters as much as LeBron is playing.
And you lost both of them and you were controlled in both of them. Our three is coming up
on a Friday live in Los Angeles. It's the herd. Another podcast from some SNL late night
