Starting point is 00:02:20 It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard Podcast.

Find your local station for The Hurt at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day in the IHeart Radio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. Thanks for listening to The HARD podcast. Here we go, hour two and a Monday. Matt Hasselbeck, five minutes away. We're live. It's the HARD. Last night as good as the NFL gets. Niners, edge pass, the Chicago Bears, drama in Pittsburgh. who's left offensively to help Aaron Rogers. San Francisco and Seattle. How good is that?
Starting point is 00:03:30 It is great to have you in a Monday. Let's not waste any time. Where Colin was right, where Colin was wrong on a Monday. Where Colin was right? Well, well, well, slinging Sammy Darnold. You know, quarterbacks with consecutive 13 wins seasons in NFL history, it's Brady Manning, Rogers, Farr, and Sam Darnold.
Starting point is 00:03:54 Yeah, he's in pretty good company. Just goes to show your first job isn't always your best. Sam Darnold never worries about the occasional mistake. Always looking forward. He and JSN, by the way, that has got to be a top five combo going forward. Where Colin was wrong. Probably been a little tough on Brock Purdy, or maybe he's just getting better because the last month,
Starting point is 00:04:19 Brock Purdy's aggressiveness. efficiency, movement has been stuff for the ages. And I know Garapolo was good in San Francisco. It wasn't this good. He wasn't this aggressive. I thought yesterday was as good as he's played. I mean, just making ad-libbing, playing within structure. And I like the fact that he throws a pick six and it doesn't get him down.
Starting point is 00:04:42 It doesn't change his mood or body language. Number two, Red Zone offense. I know Kyle Shanahan's great, but this is the best quarterback play he's had since. since Matt Ryan won the MVP. Where Colin was right? Mike Vrable, I had predicted New England will be a playoff team. They're going to be the double
Starting point is 00:05:01 your win total team. They tripled it and they fixed everything in one season. Remember when we didn't like their wide receiver room? Well, their top five offense, top five defense. And they've immediately surpassed Sean McDermott
Starting point is 00:05:16 Year one. That's not the way it should be. Now, now Drake May, good is he this good i don't know but this was to me the easiest offseason call with all that free agent money josh mcdaniels mike brable and an improving drake may this team's going to get good fast and they did where colin was wrong the colts have lost six straight maybe they shouldn't give up two first round picks for a cornerback sauce gardener i have defended the head coach and the gm but even the philip river story he went oh for three daniel jones the truth is
Starting point is 00:05:51 who he is sort of surfaced eventually. Right now, they're not close to Jacksonville offensively in their own division, and they're a mile from Houston defensively. So at best, they're the third best team in a pretty wonky division. I was wrong. Where Colin was right? I never bought into Aaron Glenn. I mean, they've been blown out four straight games by 23 or more.
Starting point is 00:06:17 It looks like the players have quit. How can you be a defensive coach? and not have a single interception all season. That's kind of historically embarrassing. It's okay. Nat Hackett, you knew early, David Cully, Freddie Kitchens, Jim Tom Sula. Like some coaches feel like coordinators not head coaches, but this has been pretty bad. This has been pretty bad.
Starting point is 00:06:39 Where Colin was wrong. I figured Chip Kelly, Pete Carroll, Gino Smith would at least be interesting. I didn't know they'd be awful. I mean, Gino can throw the ball and Chip Kelly and Pete Carroll and they got housed yesterday by the New York Giants. Now, the good news is they have the number one pick and they're going to draft the quarterback out of Indiana. But I almost think Max Crosby. Is it time to trade Max Crosby? He deserves better and you can get more draft capital because they feel like the Raiders feel like they are a mile away.
Starting point is 00:07:14 Where Colin was right? Excellent NFL reporter Ian Rappaport, Saturday report. of yes, the Giants, if they had the number one pick, would consider moving Jackson Dart and drafting Fernando Mendoza. Why wouldn't you? Jackson Darts 3 and 8, not 8 and 3. Jackson Darts fine, but if your scouting department says Mendoza has a much higher ceiling, then you go listen to your scouting department. The Giants offense has been mostly dismal for a decade. Everything has to be on the table when you're the Jets, when you're the Giants. You know, everything has to be on the table.
Starting point is 00:07:50 You can't say, well, we've got our franchise quarterback. As I've said, I like Jackson Dart. He spends more time in the blue tent than an REI manager. Not good enough. Where Colin was right? Finally, JJ Reddick. This was my concern when the Lakers were red hot without LeBron James. J.J. Reddick admitted, since LeBron returned, we haven't been organized offensively.
Starting point is 00:08:15 There's just too many positions. that we are wasting. This is what I said. LeBron won't play defense anymore. And all you're doing is taking the ball at Austin Reeves or a Lucas hand in this idea that, well, LeBron will make it work. Yeah, but I mean, he's been the best player in the league
Starting point is 00:08:33 for about 15-year stretch. He's also got pride. And so this is a disjointed, uneven roster. The pressure now on Rob Polinketta make some moves. Or maybe it's sort of a lost year. but JJ Reddick saying the honest part out loud and the uncomfortable part
Starting point is 00:08:51 LeBron coming back has made things a little difficult too Colin right calling wrong in a Monday and with that Matt Hasselbeck 18 years in the NFL joins us I gotta say maybe I have
Starting point is 00:09:06 maybe I have trait bias where I like my quarterback's to be big and strong maybe I have draft bias where if you're the last guy taken in a draft although Kurt Warner and Tony Romo were undrafted, but the last three weeks with Brock Purdy, now that his toes healed.
Starting point is 00:09:22 Red zone, he's aggressive. I mean, I watched last night, I'm like, yeah, you can get to the Super Bowl with that. I guess I just whiffed, right? I mean, I was just wrong on him. Yeah, yeah, you're coming around. I mean, I like to see it. I mean, I think it was a long time.
Starting point is 00:09:39 You were complaining about certain things, but you're not alone. Listen, he doesn't pass the eye test. Like you see him. he looks like he might be a college kid or a high school quarterback. He doesn't wow you with those tangibles, but his intangibles are off the charts. And when you talk about a guy like Kyle Shanahan or John Lynch
Starting point is 00:09:56 or these guys who understand how to evaluate quarterbacks, he clearly is their guy. And he listened to his teammates talk about him, whether it's Trent Williams or Kittle or McCaffrey. They're like, no, no, this is our guy. This dude's a dog. He's a beast. And I think we saw that the other night.
Starting point is 00:10:11 He plays on rhythm. He plays from the pocket, outside the pocket. I think Kyle Shanahan does a really nice job with these shorter quarterbacks, getting them outside the pocket just as much as they're inside the pocket for better vision. You know, and he's got Moxie. He started over 40 games at Iowa State. There's something to playing when you're in college and not sitting and watching. And, you know, I think he's a little bit more agile than people realize defenders included.
Starting point is 00:10:36 Yeah, no, I'm dead. He is way more athletic than I've ever given him credit for. He's been dinged up a little in his career. For the first time, in a long time, he's held. healthy, and he moves well. Now, I said if you're the Bears, my bigger issue is I don't think, I thought they were reactive on defense, not proactive. Salah's got nothing to work with, and he's blitzing, he's mixing stuff up. He's trying to make Caleb a little uncomfortable. He made him just uncomfortable enough on that final play. But overall, I kind of feel like second straight
Starting point is 00:11:06 game, Caleb didn't get sacked, didn't have an interception. I think you got to feel pretty good if you're Chicago. You lost a track meet. You've been winning all these games. If you're going to lose, you can lose to the hottest offense in the NFL. What was your take on the Bears? Yeah, well, I think three games in a row where Caleb's played really well and really encouraging. This was just a great offensive matchup. You got Ben Johnson on one side, Calch-and-in-on-on-the-other. It was really fun offensive game.
Starting point is 00:11:31 If you love defense, you're probably, you know, pulling your hair out just a little bit. But explosive plays, trick plays, quarterbacks being really elusive, doing it on time, doing outside. You know, I think there's still opportunities. One team had to go home the loser, right? And so when you watch the film the next day, you can usually point to three to five plays that if we just make one of those plays, we win the game. And you heard Chris Collinsworth on the broadcast last night, you know, allude to it. Like, man, if we just had a tick, if you could have just found a way to get the ball to this guy this one time.
Starting point is 00:12:01 And that happens in every game. And I think that's why this game was so fun to watch. And it's also why I think everyone's excited if it happens again. But no, it was a good quarterback battle last night. And I got to give credit to both guys. played really well. Just one guy made the play at the end, and the other guy didn't. And, you know, they might meet again, and it might be different the next time.
Starting point is 00:12:22 So much fun. Such a fun NFL game. I'm going to support the bills going for it. I thought the Eagles defense was on the field the entire second half. You have Josh Allen. You're at home. You're favored. I'm going to go with it.
Starting point is 00:12:37 I'm not going to be a backseat guy. Were you okay going for two in Buffalo? Yeah, I would have been good either. way like either way you could make the argument for for uh not you know the eagles hadn't done much offensively but then again we're at home i got josh allen is my quarterback i've got a two point play this is what happens when you decide on your two point play the night before or maybe even two days before in an air conditioning room with a group of people you write on your big call sheet okay if we've got fourth and goal to win the game our two point play is what what are we calling and you feel really good
Starting point is 00:13:10 about it sometimes and i i bet you they felt really good about this point play. The play worked. And I, you know, Josh Allen, he's got to be kicking himself. 99 out of 100 times. He makes that throw. Guarantee it. It was kind of shocking to see him not make it. Now, he's banged up. He's got a real bad foot injury. He maybe he can't push off, feels the pressure, bad weather, all the stuff. But no, I'm, I'm in favor of going for that. And, and I'd be in favor of calling the exact same play again in the exact same situation. I'd feel good about the quarterback making the play. The Eagles are so weird. I can't even wrap my brain around.
Starting point is 00:13:45 A.J. Brown was feeling it. The short passing game was working, and then they just pulled the plug on the offense. They have four of the worst offensive halves in the league this year, and that's counting all the bad offenses. Explain to me what happens as well as you can with this offense about every other week. Who knows, man? Like, if you got, if you're an Eagles fan, like, who knows? This is what I would say about it, though. I'm not a win is a win, right? And we're not going to apologize for that. the stuff, right? And I've gotten on here before and have said, hey, listen, it would be better if the offense, instead of turning the ball over and playing sloppy and stuff like that, it would
Starting point is 00:14:24 be better if you took a knee three times and let your punt or punt. I mean, I remember doing the Rams Seahawks game earlier this year. And the Rams, darn old had an uncharacteristic day through four interceptions. And I said, if the Seahawks just would have taken a knee three times and let their punt or punt, they would have won. And that's kind of the mindset that it felt Philly went with a little bit in terms of, hey, let's play safe, let our punter punt. Our defense is playing actually really, really well. 13-0-0 lead most of the game. It's a scary lead, 13 points.
Starting point is 00:14:54 No one really loves the 13-point lead. It's a weird, I don't know, maybe I've been burned too many times. But then you let your punter punt, and then just, you know, don't step on the line when he downs a perfect pun on the one-yard line, you know, stuff like that. Execute well on special teams and help your defense play. But, no, it's a little frustrating when you're used to Philly's offense being good. but there is a complimentary football aspect to this where just don't screw it up when you're up by two scores. So it's, I mean, it's just so Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 00:15:24 So I like healthier Baltimore, even if Huntley plays, because I think he's a pretty capable backup. I watched him beat the Bears this year. He's good. Derek Henry, Zay Flowers. Harbaugh, this is rough. Washington broke his arm. D.K. is not around. I don't even know who their number one receiver is.
Starting point is 00:15:45 MVS. They don't have really a dependable run game and they quit on it sometimes. I like Baltimore in the final week. Do you and where are you with Pittsburgh today? Well, I start with Baltimore. I don't, for whatever reason, Lamar Jackson just doesn't look like Lamar Jackson this year. You know, I don't know if it's on the field, off the field, it's not the same. Tyler Huntley, you know, for whatever reason, when he's in the game,
Starting point is 00:16:08 they lean more on Derek Henry. They use their flowers in the run game. to get a little bit more of what I think about Baltimore Raven football. Like we're going to be the hammer, not the nail. We're not going to get too cute. Now, now the Steelers on the other side, they're not operating at full strength. You mentioned DK, huge loss, Washington, huge loss. I would love to see Aaron Rogers under Centermore using his Hall of Fame brain,
Starting point is 00:16:33 getting them into the right play call, using his cadence, taking advantage of free plays. It's something, the things that he does better than anybody. in the world, really. But this idea of him just dropping back and empty and throwing to his guys that he feels comfortable with, even if it's not a great matchup, that's not winning. I just don't think that's their best formula.
Starting point is 00:16:54 That's kind of what he tried to do. Aaron Rogers did last year with the Jets. That's not the thing to me. I think where he can be exceptional is when he's just sort of running the offense, you know, using all the skills and experience that he has and in helping the players around him, mainly the running backs be successful.
Starting point is 00:17:14 And again, I think it's like point guard, not shooting forward. And if he can do that, they can actually do some damage in the playoffs. But they got to kind of like, I think, take a hard look in the mirror and say, okay, what do we really do best right now? So, you know, it's really interesting. I'm watching Green Bay and Malik Willis. And he goes in Tennessee. And Mike Brable's in win now mode.
Starting point is 00:17:41 and so they don't pay a lot of attention to Malik. They're not going to be there to monitor him and mentor him. He goes to Green Bay and there's no necessary urgency. You know, Jordan loves your franchise quarterback. So he gets a really good coach, Matt LaFleur. He gets a really good organization. He gets really good players. And then you watch Malik Willis after a couple years and you're like,
Starting point is 00:18:01 this kid can this is why he was so well thought of. He also went to a small school in college, Matt. So the NFL was a huge jump. And that, you know, that doesn't help. And so I watch him now, and I watch the Packers, and I'm like, Jordan loves the franchise guy. If you ran a team in this league, because there's not going to be many quarterbacks in that first round, do you think Malik Willis, I look at that talent and I'm like, is he a franchise guy? Or is it just LaFleur, the environment?
Starting point is 00:18:32 And he's just a really, really talented bridge guy. But I'm watching Saturday night, and I'm like, man, there's a lot there. like I get why he was drafted out of liberty so high. Would you roll the dice on Malik Willis? Is it an environment or is that kid a franchise? What do you see? Are you saying as your starting quarterback in free agency? Is that what you mean?
Starting point is 00:18:51 Yeah, just go for it and sign him to a three-year deal. Yeah, it's interesting because I remember when he came out, a lot of people liked him, some people didn't. And, you know, I remember he was the third string quarterback in Tennessee, and he was an afterthought. And it was about Will Levis and Mason Rudolph and these guys. And, you know, clearly your environment does matter. Green Bay is one of those places that even back when I was the backup there,
Starting point is 00:19:13 even before I got there was Brett Fav, Mark Brunel, Ty Detmer, Steve Bono. Like there's like a lot of guys there in the room. They overinvest in the quarterback position. And Malik is one of those guys in a long list that play really, really good football. I think Matt LaFleur does a great job. I think Kyle Shanahan does a great job. I think Sean McVeigh does a great job. There's a lot of these guys that come from that Kyle Shanahan, Mike Shanahan,
Starting point is 00:19:36 Gary Kubiak, now, Clint Kubiak tree, where we have a system that we believe in. It's not all on you to go play playground ball. You just have to trust us, be coachable, and let the offense work for you. It's sort of like just-ad-milk and stir kind of deal. And some guys are able to make that jump, and some guys aren't. And I think Malik is a great example of a guy that plays within the system, has great coaching around him, and clearly is a problem for defenses. He's kind of overachieved for what his expectation level was.
Starting point is 00:20:08 Would I make a jump on him? If you're running that exact same offense, I think you can do that. Yes. Yeah, yeah. It's fun to watch. Okay, so Seattle plays San Francisco. And it's interesting, just to be instructive, Niners opened as a one and a half point favorite.
Starting point is 00:20:26 The sharps, the wise guys, all bet Seattle. And I was telling Jay Mack, he loves Purdy. And I said, Brock's one of those guys, that if you give him time and you don't speed him up, Sam Darnold's a little like this, that Brock is highly effective. If you speed Brock up, if you speed Darnold up, then you, because these guys are aggressive, throw the ball down the field.
Starting point is 00:20:49 Well, San Francisco is not going to speed Darnold up. They have no pass rush. Seattle can speed Brock up. So I think Seattle is probably the play here. What do you envision? You know Seattle so well. Seattle, San Francisco, you've seen both. both so many times. What is that going to look like?
Starting point is 00:21:07 Well, this is a really good Seattle team. And I know people have been sleeping on them until probably this morning, you know, on the national scene. This is probably the best defense they've had in a long, long time. This is the most points they've scored on offense, I think ever. You know, you go back to week one, though. In week one, Seattle played San Fran. And they just didn't look like themselves. And sometimes that can happen when you play your friends. And Clint Kubiak and Sam Darnold, they came from San Fran. Kyle Shanhan, like they know our offense. And it was unrecognizable what they decided to be on offense in that first matchup. They didn't have a fullback in the game. They were an empty
Starting point is 00:21:44 formation so much. And I think they just got to get back to, hey, this is our identity. And I don't care what you know about us. We're going to do what we do. And I think if the Seahawks do that the second time around offensively, yes, I agree. Sam Darnold will have time to to throw and he'll be comfortable. On the defensive side, I think Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy, DeMarcus Lawrence, those are underrated guys that can get pressure on purdy. But again, he's very, very elusive.
Starting point is 00:22:11 And just so if you just beat your guy in front of you, that doesn't necessarily mean that you won the down. Kind of got to play team defense to the whistle. So, no, I think the number one seed in play at San Fran. I think this is too close to call a game. The NFL got it right. Saturday night, prime time. It should be a great one. Matt Hasselbeck on a Monday. Wild night last night. Wild games. Great seeing you, man.
Starting point is 00:22:35 All right, buddy. See you. I am a fan of aggressive quarterbacks, but when you speed up aggressive quarterbacks, that's when the turnovers happen. That's what happens with Darnold. It happened with Andrew Locke. And Brock Purdy is not in this league because he plays it safe. Brock Pretty's aggressive. He is really aggressive. And sometimes it burns you. Last night, not a lot of pressure. He had the second. most time to throw Brock Pertie did last night of his entire career. That is not going to be the case with Seattle. They're going to be on him and that game plan, you can't just sit seven-step drop it against Seattle. It doesn't work that way. So I can't wait for it.

Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember.
Starting point is 00:24:21 I think it was on a call about what we should call it. And we were thinking I'm originally calling it. one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers was... This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this.
Starting point is 00:24:36 We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, where people could call in and say, Hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast.
Starting point is 00:24:47 But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. When Jacob met Levant this plant to a billion dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history.
Starting point is 00:27:49 You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming? after me. Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. We got all sorts of stuff going on. Diana Rusini does great work. NFL reporter joining us last hour. Oh, is this the best time of the year or what? J-Mack with the news. No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line news. All right, he didn't really talk about Derek Henry much.
Starting point is 00:28:30 His monster game Saturday night in Green Bay, Colin, propelled the Ravens into a win and in game. Obviously helped by the Browns beating the Steelers. But Sunday night football this week, it's Raven Steelers, a classic rivalry, AFC North on the line, playoff spot on the line. Derek Henry, just an otherworldly performance. Essentially, you know, Harbaugh remembers, oh, I screwed up last week against the Patriots. I forgot to feed Derek Henry. in the fourth. So what does he do? He overcompensates
Starting point is 00:28:59 36 carries. 36, Colin. That's absurd. For 216 yards and four touchdowns. You know, I mean, you could argue that he needed to keep feeding him? I don't know. They were up 14 in the fourth. How's Derek Henry going to perform the week after 36 carries against the Steelers?
Starting point is 00:29:18 He doesn't... I mean, the bottom line is these teams know each other. Derek Henry probably shows up at practice and doesn't... He doesn't... You know, I mean, he's basically in recovery. all week. He's also like one of those baseball pitchers that gets better from the fifth inning on. Like sometimes Derek Henry has, you know, I don't know what the historical numbers are, but he had a very slow start to his NFL career first couple years. But he just keeps getting better and better. He's often better late in games where he's got 25 plus carries. So I think
Starting point is 00:29:48 he'll be fine for the matchup. So the latest is Lamar Jackson. They're calling it a shade under 50%. I don't know how you quantify that. 47% chancey plays. Snoop Huntley was fine last week. I don't want to go overboard. I mean, the guy threw for like a buck 50, okay? JJ, not JJ Watt, they're saying is a long shot to play this week. That's not great.
Starting point is 00:30:11 And D.K. Metcalf suspended. Things are not looking good for the Steelers. I'm sure you saw. Aaron Rogers only completed eight passes to wide receivers. Tight end, Darno Washington, the big six-seven dude. Broken arm. It looks like his season's over. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:26 I don't know. This just not, we don't have the odds yet. I don't know what the over under is. Pittsburgh's only way to win, it would seem to me, is 1714, or you make a defensive play. So Pittsburgh's route to win is very limited. Baltimore could win by scoring points. I think Huntley's a pretty darn good backup.
Starting point is 00:30:45 I watched them beat the Bears this year. I watch him beat the Packers. I don't know. I trust him. There are certain backups in this league. Huntley's one of them. I trust him. He'll make smart decisions. Go back and look at the Bears game earlier this year.
Starting point is 00:31:00 He's composed. He doesn't make big mistakes. He plays within the system. I trust them in a big spot to beat Pittsburgh. On the road, Mike Tomlin's going to be like a three and a half point thereabouts, home dog in a very big rah-rah spot, which is what he's done amazing with over the years. Down Watt, down Metcalf. Nobody believes in us.
Starting point is 00:31:22 You know he's going to play that card all week. I mean, this is going to be a very close game. Yes. Yeah. What happens if Aaron Rogers fails here? Huh? Because remember, when they beat Baltimore a few weeks ago, Rogers and Metcalf were the big story. I think like the third play of the game, 50-yard bomb to D.K.
Starting point is 00:31:41 He's not there. Yeah, I'm not going to blame Aaron. I think he's duct-tape this offense together all year. The minute D.K. Metcalfe's not available. Look at the talent. There is nothing there. So you're not going to blame Aaron for targeting MvS against Denzell Ward three times with 25 seconds left? Who else can it throw to?
Starting point is 00:32:01 Scottie Miller? Jalen Warren? Kenneth Gave. Well, do something. Don't target their best quarterback with MVS. I don't know. I thought Rogers was quite bad. He was clearly ducking Miles Garrett.
Starting point is 00:32:12 Anyways, let's move on to Raiders Giants in the Toilet Bowl yesterday. This was a terrible game. I was the idiot who took the Raiders. and then hours later, Max Krosmys basically ruled out. And then Max Krosmi shows video on himself playing basketball at his outs as an FU to the Raider. I mean, this franchise is a disaster. And the Giants, you could argue, they were in line to get the number one pick last year, screwed it up, Juan, missed out on Cam Ward.
Starting point is 00:32:38 Now they're in the number one pick this year, beat the Raiders. They're not going to get Mendoza. I don't know, Colin. We got the draft order here on the screen for you. My Jets climbing back into the mix at the United States. three. Raiders will clearly go quarterback. If I was
Starting point is 00:32:55 the Raiders, I'd get Mendoza. If I was the Giants, there's a couple of, there's a couple of good linebackers. There's also... A linebacker a two, stop it. Come on. You just go get the best player. The Jets, I'd go...
Starting point is 00:33:11 Dante Moore? Dante Moore, if he's there? Yeah, if he's there. Would you say they're useless? Tennessee's got multiple needs. Arizona's a mess. Arizona is going to have a new coach. Is Cleveland going to stay with Shadoor Sanders?
Starting point is 00:33:26 I mean, he's going to get a look, but there isn't a quarterback you'd take because the Jets will take whoever is the next best. I would not be surprised if the Browns kept Stefanski and went after Malik Willis. He's going to be the best free agent quarterback, right? Yeah, but you're paying Deshaun Watson still. You got to go hit a quarterback in the draft. That's the thing about Shadur. You can have a decent roster with Shadur because you're not paying it.
Starting point is 00:33:50 him anything. By the way, did you see the Chador interception yesterday? I was bad. It was bad. He just shucks it literally. Remember that game 500 where you just throw the ball high in the air and call out a number? I was like, that's like a throw in the backyard. It was atrocious. He's got to get, Shador's got to get out of
Starting point is 00:34:06 the running backwards thing. Yeah. Which by the way, mostly Caleb Williams has done a great job on that. But I'll tell you I'll tell you a story that nobody talks about. Here we go. Tyler Shuck. Oh, yeah. I can't wait for this. We're not doing it now, but go ahead, go ahead.
Starting point is 00:34:21 Looks like the Saints don't need a quarterback. Okay. I got to just stay calm because I keep getting these people on social media. Oh, you don't believe in Chuck. He's our franchise quarterback. I mean, we're crowning guys way too early. By the way, Jackson Dart? Where are we?
Starting point is 00:34:37 Franchise quarterback? Yeah. Oh, dear. Okay. Final story, Con, let's go to, oh, my goodness. We've forgotten all about your boy, Baker Mayfield, and Tampa. They are cratering, lost seven of eight, including. putting a fourth straight. This was an easy dub.
Starting point is 00:34:52 Dolphins beat him. I mean, I don't know what the hell happened to the bucks, Colin. The offense stinks all of a sudden. The defense can't stop anybody. Baker Mayfield, two picks and a fumble? He was quite bad. Here's Baker on week 18 where they can save the season and get in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:35:08 Offensively, it comes back to execution. You know, we obviously gave ourselves a fighting chance right there, but yeah, didn't do enough. And, yeah, those turnovers, obviously. crushed us. So got to come back and here's the thing.
Starting point is 00:35:24 We still have a chance next week. We've been blessed with a chance next week and guys need to handle it the right way. So Colin, real quick, did you see in the video one sleeve off his throwing arm? The other had some sort of wrap. I don't know, something was going on there. I'm just telling you he's hurt because remember he's a tough guy. He doesn't like to admit it.
Starting point is 00:35:43 And that's what took him down in Cleveland. See the video there? There's something going on with it. I don't know if it's just, it's ice or treatment. But something's wrong with Baker Mayfield. He has been so bad for two months now. Yeah, I mean, yeah, it's not been good. It's not been good. Early in the season, he was on fire.
Starting point is 00:36:02 This happened in Cleveland. They got to the playoffs. Buck fans are like, well, our offensive line, again, the chargers are 11 and 5 with a worse offensive line. Everybody's old lines banged out. It's a toughest position to play in the league. So it's not just that. It's had a rough season.
Starting point is 00:36:18 They have to, they have. a good GM. They got to hitting some draft picks. You know, they're going to have big conversations on what to do with coach, too. I don't know what they're going to do. I mean, they played very well early in the season. Listen, the NFL average is seven new coaches a year. So, you know, you start looking at the Raiders and Pete Carroll. You could see that getting flushed out.
Starting point is 00:36:42 The Jets and Aaron Glenn. You could see that getting flushed out. Like the Raiders don't do anything well. Chip Kelly didn't get along. with people on the staff. You could see that thing going sideways fast for Pete Carroll and in Vegas. So, Colin, I forget who posted this online yesterday. Are you ready for this number?
Starting point is 00:37:01 Heading into yesterday's Bucks Dolphins matchup, Todd Bowles' record in Tampa, 34 and 32. Yeah. Mike McDaniel's in Miami, 34 and 32. So now Mike McDaniel has a better record than Bowles. Yet everybody just wants to run off McDaniel, all the narratives about the dolphins and their softness. Well, Todd Bulls, same record, and he's got a franchise guy in Baker Mayfield, you claim. Yeah, I mean, it's, it's what?
Starting point is 00:37:30 Mike made Tua a Pro Bowler. Yeah. You know, like, and Mike's an offensive coach. I tend to with offensive, like Pete Carroll's an old defensive coach. If you blew him out, I'd get it. Aaron Glenn is a middle-aged defensive coach not working. I could move on. I supported Matt Nagy in Chicago when nobody would.
Starting point is 00:37:54 My take is he's on, he got Trubisky to the playoffs. He's on the right side of the ball. Matt Eberflues in Chicago, I was like, get rid of him. So like Mike McDaniel probably loses his job, but he's on the right side. He made Tua a pro bowler. Go look around. Go watch the game last night, Bears and Niners. Ben Johnson, Kyle Shanahan.
Starting point is 00:38:15 You think you're going to get that game with two defensive head coaches? Like you're seeing these offensive brutes. These offensive, brilliant offensive coaches, they're different. They're just different. So just Bulls? Is he in jeopardy if you think of damage? I don't know. I don't know if he should be.
Starting point is 00:38:28 I'd have to go examine all of it. I am not paying attention. I have always thought he was pretty capable. I think he's a really smart defensive guy. I'd have to look at everything. Now, he did lose Canales, his OC, and then Liam Cohen is OC. Yeah. That's the downside of being a defensive coach.
Starting point is 00:38:46 if you do get a great OC, a year or two later, they leave, and then you have to reinvent yourself. And how many great OCs can you hire in succession? He nailed two to two. So you could say with Todd Bulls to defend him, okay, he got two right, and they were a playoff team. He missed on this one. Do you give him another chance with another OC and let Baker Mayfield have a say in the selection?
Starting point is 00:39:08 I think you could make an argument if you were the agent or defender of Todd Bull. So spot on by you, that's a great point. And I want everybody to listen. when these NFL insiders come on and they start talking about head coaching candidates, Colin, all they mention is defensive coaches. That's it. Jesse Minter, Brian Flores. Just listen closely.
Starting point is 00:39:27 That's all agents pushing their guy to get a head coaching job because everybody knows what your path. The right path is your past. Hire an offensive guy. We've been on this for like five years. Go look at the end of the season, your final six and eight coaches. It's a final four. Your Super Bowls. Jay Mack with the news.
Starting point is 00:39:44 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd lie news. And my take is, I'm not into fire the coach. But when you get into certain situations, like they can't get their personal life in order. We saw that at Michigan. Like, that's just one of those where there's egregious personal mistakes. Nobody's perfect.
Starting point is 00:40:02 People make mistakes. But there are certain times that gets in the way. The other thing I've always said about coaches, I've said this for 20 years, even if you've got a losing record, are you taking care of your side of the problem? ball. A lot of you guys bang on Lincoln Riley, and my take is U.S.C.'s offense is amazing. You don't have to like his recruiting all the time, but the offense, he's an offensive coach. So when Domingo Ryan's, I think, was it last year was struggling, people were banging on D'emico Ryans, and I'm like, the Texans defense is unbelievable. I'm good with that.
Starting point is 00:40:36 If you can get your side right, I know you know football. That's why with the Jets, you're like, they don't have an interception this year. and you're a defensive guy. That would worry me. Or Nathaniel Hackett was an offensive guy in Denver, and he couldn't do the clock. Remember the first game he goes back to Seattle with Russell Wilson, and they butcher the clock?
Starting point is 00:40:58 I'm like, you're an offensive guy. You've got to be able to figure that out. In Chicago, it's the herd. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays at noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, it's us, the Jonas brothers, and guess what? We have some big news. news news. We created
Starting point is 00:41:17 our own podcast called Hey Jonas. We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts around there. But, this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name Hey Jonas, guys?
Starting point is 00:41:34 I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it. And we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band. before Jonas Brothers was... This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes.
Starting point is 00:41:49 I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast where people could call in and say, Hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas,
Starting point is 00:41:59 and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen.
Starting point is 00:42:09 We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guide, Not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, S&L's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform?
Starting point is 00:42:31 We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Last night, a blown call changed the game. I'm Renee Stubbs. And on the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast, I'm breaking. breaking down everything happening at Roland Garris, every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on Clay.
Starting point is 00:43:51 Jenchen win. I mean, she went down in three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted. She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lina Rubakina is arguably the best player in the world right now, and I actually can win on any surface, because if she's serving, well, good luck. Consider this your court-side seat to the French Open. Listen to the Renee Stubbs Tennis Podcast on the online.
Starting point is 00:44:13 IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamist sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth. He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey,
Starting point is 00:44:43 I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across. When Jacob met Levin this went to a billion dollar fraud. Tonight on FS1, it's a college hoops triple header, starting with number nine Michigan State hosting Cornell.
Starting point is 00:45:29 Then it's Big Ten Women's Hoops as Silas Swords and sixth-ranked Michigan take on KB Faiso in Oregon. Then out west, it's Utah versus Washington. It all tips off at 7 p.m. Eastern, only on FS1. All right. One of the things sometimes a parent will come up to me if I have to speak to a college class or a high school class. What's the best advice you could give to my son or daughter? And my best advice is there's no one piece of advice. Everybody in the Internet's got all the advice. I have opinions.
Starting point is 00:46:00 Advice, there's no one way in life. Don't get your head down. Keep working. Early failure doesn't mean anything. You're in your 20s. There is no one piece of advice for any career. go look at the NFC West quarterbacks this year. Three different teams.
Starting point is 00:46:18 L.A. has a former number one pick, old Matt Stafford. They're crushing. San Francisco has the last pick, undersized, albeit talented, Brock Purdy. And Seattle's got a reclamation project in Sam Darnold, who, by the way, if you look at the numbers, the last several years, he's number one in wins, number two in big plays, number three in passing touchdowns. Yesterday, seven of eight on third down. He was outstanding. The bottom line is there's no one piece of advice. There's a million different ways to be successful,
Starting point is 00:46:54 especially at quarterback in the NFL. Maybe Malik Willis is your answer. I mean, the world gave up on Sam Darnold. Now he's had back-to-back 13 win seasons. You know who else has done that? Brady, Farrv, Manning, Rogers, and Sam Darnold. There is no one way. There's no linear path for an actor, a singer, a quarterback, great athletes.
Starting point is 00:47:20 And yesterday, Sam was great on third down, even within a game. Sam yesterday, excellent on third down. That was his thing. Here's his coach. I know it wasn't Sam's like best game of all time and the stats reflect that. But like there's a big time third down throws with pressure in his face. You know, we threw the one to Jacks. You know, that route to Cooper.
Starting point is 00:47:45 I mean, those are some big time throws that, you know, in the face of pressure that we need to be able to make and they're not easy to make. Okay, I want to talk Sador Sanders. Because we talked earlier about the Browns beating the Steelers, we concentrated on the Steelers. What would I do if I ran the Steelers? I love their GM Andrew Barry. I love their coach Kevin Stefanski. I'm going to throw this out. You still have that Deshawn Watson cap hit?
Starting point is 00:48:10 I would stay with Shador Sanders. If Dante Moore does not come out, I would stay with Shudor Sanders. You're not going to be a top 10 team. He needs an entire offseason being coached by Stefanski as the number one quarterback. This year he went into camp as a scout team guy. I would stay with Shadur. Do I think Shadur is ever going to have great traits? No, he's not that big.
Starting point is 00:48:35 He doesn't have a great arm. He's athletic, not that athletic. But you know what? He's a big play guy. he has some really awful picks. So what? Purdy, Stafford, Darnold, Andrew Luck,
Starting point is 00:48:48 I'm not crushing you for that. They don't have a very good offensive line. They need to. This is not a great quarterback class. In Cleveland, need some draft capital, right? Rebuild your O line. Shadour Sanders, a fifth round pick is inexpensive.
Starting point is 00:49:05 Do I think he's great? No. But next year, if Dante Moore doesn't come out, you start looking at the 2027 quarterback draft class. Pretty tasty, pretty interesting. Guys that could come out this year, like a Ty Simpson or a Dante Moore,
Starting point is 00:49:23 if they stay in, they get another 13, 14 starts. So about every third year, you get one of these first round quarterback classes with like four or five guys who can play. This year is not one of them. So why reach on a quarterback if you're Cleveland? There's three great offensive tackles in this class. Go get one of them, two from Utah.
Starting point is 00:49:43 Go get an offensive tackle to support Shudor Sanders. Your second, third, fourth pick, rebuild the offensive line. Go get another wide receiver. Give Shadour Sanders a chance. This offense right now, you don't really give them a chance. You don't mean, what quarterback has a chance? You're just not good enough. So, again, I don't need you to be Tom, Brady, and Patrick Mahomes.
Starting point is 00:50:08 If I need a quarterback, I've got a ridiculous, I mean, Sean Payton got lucky. He needed a quarterback in Bo Nix, Drake May, Penix, McCarthy, Caleb, Jaden Daniels. The year that he needed a quarterback, it was a great quarterback class in Denver, he got lucky. You know, the year the Patriots needed a quarterback, they got lucky. They were a bad team, lottery pick level, and Drake May was there. But some years like Cleveland, they're not going to get Mendoza. So just give Shadur the reins, build the offense around him, attack the wide receiver position, give Shadur a fighting chance next year, and let's say he wins seven games and go seven and ten.
Starting point is 00:50:52 You're probably drafting nine in a draft with four to five quarterbacks, and you can get one without having to give up draft capital. But this idea, everybody's saying, well, is he good? Is he not? There's a lot of analytics that say Shadur isn't very good. there's also analytics that say Jackson Dart's not great but the Giants are going to give now that they're the number two pick they're going to give Jackson Dart another year they're going to give him stuff to work with
Starting point is 00:51:17 so I don't I think there's a real argument that I mean just look at how much these young quarterbacks approve year to year look at Drake May last year to this year he's the top three four quarterback in the league this year last year he had moment where he looked really good. He didn't even have a lot of great gains. He had a lot of great moments. So I think I'd stick with Shadour. And if I was Kevin Stefanski,
Starting point is 00:51:44 I would go to the owner and say, you're wearing this mess because of you. You're the one that guaranteed the Deshaun Watson deal. So let me do it my way. Do I think you're going to be a playoff team with Shadour? No. But give the kid a shot. I mean, I still contend with a good infrastructure.
Starting point is 00:52:04 I mean, yesterday, he beat him. Aaron Rogers. Aaron had, I mean, that Pittsburgh roster, that Pittsburgh roster is better than that Cleveland roster. And Shindor had a really bad pick. He also had a couple of nice throws. So, there you go. All right, Diana Rusini shows up in our last hour. Now, yeah, football starts getting real serious. San Francisco in Seattle next Saturday. That is one for the ages. Think I'm going to Clean hawks on that one. Hey guys, it's us. The Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe. I'm Kevin.
