vacation wherever you are just keep it locked here at fox sports radio we got you got a good hour for you charlie we'll join us later on the show uh we'll get you ready for the big game the iron bowl bedlam you name it as well uh the bears won yesterday wong and it's always funny to me on how like we didn't have you know live sports with fans on tv for just about a year then we do it's a day that's supposed to be dedicated to family and the food and yellow football. And every year you'll get the, why are the lions on? Yesterday it was like perfect. So I coach U-Sports.

I have a basketball program. And one of the things you got to find in U-Sports is you got to find the right level for each kid and each team. So in basketball, or at least at the club level, they'll have, I guess they have like something called copper, which is. Okay, copper, bronze, silver, gold, and then sometimes I'll have platinum divisions. And what you have to do is you have to be realistic with your players, how good you are. Because if you step into a platinum or a gold level deal and you've got silver players, like, it's not going to be a fun hour. It's going to be miserable because they're just so much better.

and you got to find the right level. I thought, and I know they didn't do it on purpose, but I thought the Lions and the Bears, that was the right level. Now those two teams are going to the playoffs this year, especially not the Lions. Lions have been mostly competitive with mostly everybody that they've played,

but in order to give them a legit chance, they got to play a silver level team. That's the Bears. Remember the Bears, in addition, to not being great on offense, they don't have their two best defensive players in terms of rushing the quarterback. You know, Khalil Mack out for the year, that's going to change you. So Matt Nagy said after the game, I can't tell you how much this win means to me.

When there's distractions, which is in every sport in all facts of life, there's always going to be distractions. It's how you handle them. But the reason why we got the win is because of how they handled the distractions. It's my job to make sure of honest and open communication. I just can't tell you how much this win means today to me because of what they did. Matt Nagy talked about how proud he is of his team. The only thing I can do is give complete appreciation and thanks to the players and coaches. This is a special group across the board.

You know, obviously state in the obvious, we've been through some stuff. The distractions the last couple of days, but it just proves to who they are, what type of fighters they are, what type of winners they are. And there's just an appreciation that I and we as coach. coaches have for them because they're the ones that had to go out and do it today. He hears them talking about the turmoil of the week. So there was a report that came out that was false and that's where it started. And then we had practice and we continued with our days and we had our practices like we normally would.

And I cleared it up with the team. And then as I think everybody is aware, the next day, George came in and had a good talk with the team and confirmed that that was true. And then we went about our business. So he's like, look, I had to call my boss. It's like having to do three-way calling. She said she likes you. I don't know, I'll call. Let me just call her.

Okay, let me click over. Put yourself on mute. Don't talk. And you'll hear her say she likes you. You ever do party line when you're a kid? You're not in your head. You did party line. How weird is it to try and mention these things to your children now, by the way?

Forget about trying to get their own line, right? Like, I remember my sister talked to my parents into getting her own phone line when she was like 14 years old because you used to not have call waiting. Then you had call waiting, which was you had call waiting. Oh. Then you had three-way calling. But all this was from a landline. Like now you can do it from your cell phone.

You can be anywhere in the world doing it. It's so hard to imagine these things where you had to call an. And no, I'm not old enough to have the break-in call. Can you call phone number eight and have break-in? But that's what it feels like here. Matt Nagy confirmed today that Justin Fields has crack ribs. He'll start as soon as he's cleared medically. So I think a lot of people wonder what the heck's going on?

Why didn't they have a better plan for Justin Fields? And the answer is Matt Nagy meant what he said. He wasn't going to start or play Justin Fields this year especially early in the season. And we talk about open lines of communication. I'm sure it was openly communicated to Justin. I don't know if it was to the owner. And I definitely don't know if it was to the fans.

But the simple guess is Nagy was his last year in Kansas City. Okay. Remember, that's Mahomes sat out for 15 games, 16 weeks, and then start a week 17. And you know what they didn't do when he started week 17? They didn't change the offense to tailor it to, Pat Mahomes, they made a chase to a couple of plays here, there. But the idea was that they wanted to make him fit what they were doing. It just would take some time to do so, and they had Alex Smith in the meantime.

That's what he wanted to do in Chicago. Well, why didn't you run Reed Option? And why didn't you? Because that wasn't the plan. The plan was to make him into a better version of anything they'd had being quarterback of their offense. Will you like the offense or don't like the offense? Whatever you think of it, you're, you're, allowed to. But imagine if you got a plan like, all right, like, this is a season long thing.

We're just going to work with a kid and get him ready, you know, to start at the end of the year. And then starting next year, it'll be his team. And he'll already have played a year within this offense and watched and figure things out and whatever. Like, that's the plan. The Pat Mahomes plan is the plan. Got it? Yes. And then the owner's like, hey, I want you to play that guy that you said you weren't going to play. Because I drafted him and I want him to play. He said, And you can tell it's like you can tell your boss as much as you want. Like, but wait, we spent all this time on this one project. We're all, it was all ready to go.

We're all lined up where it's a, it's a one year process. And like, yes, fine. I don't want you to. I change. Change. So. And, and I don't think there's a couple things. Are there always going to be guys that are haters of their head coach that

aren't playing enough, aren't getting enough opportunity to think that a head coach and change should be made? Sure. and I don't know what's real and what's not in Chicago, whether or not they fought for him or just fought for their job or the reason they were so lackluster up until the end of the game was they really don't care if Matt Nagy stays or Matt Nagy goes. But it is a distraction and it is really hard to function

when everywhere you go, everything you turn on is talking about your head coach and even with the lions coming up, then it kind of gets in your head like, wait, they think we're going to lose to the lions? and then you are down to the lions as a chance you would lose the game. Matt Nagy's not fired yet. Leaking stories which aren't true doesn't, when they become true,

doesn't give you affirmation. It doesn't give you confirmation. It just became a spitball story which seemed to rattle the bears because the bears thought they had a plan, then the plan changed, and now their season's gone to hell. hell in a handbasket and you've thrown kind of a live grenade into their coaches offices

thinking just because we haven't had a meeting doesn't mean they haven't had meetings and just because we don't know doesn't mean they're not telling us. That's the problem. You know what's interesting here is that I saw this story and I thought it was really, really good, really good and really interesting as, you know, it's like this week's broken up.

You know how every, what's funny about Thursday night football is, everybody complains about Thursday football until it's Thanksgiving, and then no one complains about playing on a Thursday in Thanksgiving. Have ever seen that? So, the one thing you need to know about the Bill's win last night over the Saints is Tredavius White got hurt, and it looked bad. If you didn't see, I think Buffalo was only up 10 nothing at the time, kind of a ho-hum first half where they didn't play great.

He's an all-pro corner. He allows just 50% completion percentage, which is fourth best among defensive backs with 50 plus targets. And, like, look, he's a huge, huge part of what they do. Plus, like, I think the kicker is, here's a dude who's coming back, you know, to Shreveport, to Louisiana. And obviously he's part of a good team that came in playing poorly. They're only up to nothing.

And it looked, it looked like a season ender. It looked like a seasonender. Charlie Weiss in a moment. Let's get to Hurdline News first. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the Hurdline News. It's funny to bring that up, Doug.

I thought the exact same thing yesterday. There were six teams. worth of players for the chance that's somebody complaining about a Thursday night game, and nobody did. Seemingly all season, there have been at least one guy complaining about the Thursday night game, and nobody did last night. I wonder what's that. And look, well, what's crazy about it is that's not as much part of the new TV deal as the other ones are. So, I don't know, I just find it, do I think Thursday football is really hard in the body and probably

probably a bad idea, yes. But if you can find a way to, there's no other solution for how to generate more revenue. There's no other TV windows to be had. They're not going to go out college football on a Saturday. You know, Monday's hard enough as it is. Friday night, you're not going to have the viewership. Plus, you got high school football.

Thursday night's the only way to go, and it works. It just doesn't work for their bodies. Okay. You know, everyone has something at their job that they would really like to cut out. but you can't because there's so much money at stake. When I travel, you know, I'm calling UNLV versus UCLA tomorrow in Vakes. I mean, who travels would not like to just, I would love to cut out expense reports. Just set a fee it's going to cost.

Just give me money and I'll figure out how to make it all work. You give me 500 bucks, you give me $30,000, you give me $1,000. I'll figure out it. Just tell me how much I got. That's not the way it works. And so everyone has this at their job. Something they like to not do because of money. But, you know, the money does end up.

It's the business at the end of the end of the end. What else you got? Now, we all saw the sideline scuffle yesterday during the game, which was actually a pretty good fight for NFL standards, right? Kelvin Joseph and Roder were ejected after they got into a scrum after a punt during the game. Line judge or side judge. Tom Hill was bloodied in the scrum. Now, what people may have not seen

was that there was some chippiness that spilled into the postgame handshake. Tackle Tristan Hill was caught on video punching Raiders guard John Simpson after the game. As the teams were shaking hands in the middle of the field, Simpson was restrained from going back at Hill.

Hill was expected to receive a fine. And then video has surfaced of there was a fight at the concession stands. A couple nice ladies were obviously had a situation where according to the video a woman jumped over the concession stand to come at somebody who was in line.

She was a worker. She was working there. Somebody said the magic word. She hopped over the counter and then slipped on something. So that was the first fail. Then when she got up, she walked right into a two-piece. I mean, right into a two-piece. I mean, you know, you've been in scrumps. footwork. I've never been in a strum as an adult.

Somebody came at me at 24-hour fitness. But, yes, footwork is important. Footwork's important in having your feet. Yes, stable is important. She did not anticipate that coming over the bar. She slipped on it, and that gave her the disadvantage to begin with. And then she got the worst end of the deal. So that was not pretty.

But I will say this. As far as sideline scrums during the game and that concession fight, It was pretty good, right? I mean, for typical fight standards at an NFL game, that was pretty bloody. Do you watch them on? So now there's three types of people on injuries, right? When injuries, I look away, I don't want to see it.

I only want to see it once. Or I watch it on repeat. I think fights are much the same. Do you like watching the fights of the videos and the stands? I like watching the fights until somebody really obviously takes it and gets hurt. Like you just mentioned the pro bowler for the bills that's out. I saw the injury and never wanted to see it again. I'm that guy.

If I see it, I don't want to see a replay. You're once. You're number two. Yeah, that's something. I'm officially in that camp. Quickly, Doug, today at the press conference for the Bucks, Bruce Ariens said Antonio Brown is the only player that's ruled out for Sunday's game against Indy. That's going to be a good game.

Brown has been dealing with an injured ankle, but there's also that speculation. that he used that fake Vax card, right? And it was reported yesterday that the NFL has reached out to Brown's former personal chef, Steve Ruiz, as part of their investigation into that. Just kind of reading between the lines here, you think the bucks are keeping Brown out until that investigation has been thoroughly decided on? I don't think so. I can be wrong. I don't think so.

But do I think it, Antonio Brown and being in Florida, having a fake backs card is the most Antonio Brown, fakes backs card, Florida story ever? Of course. Like, sorry, it feels like it all fits there. But I'm also taking the word of a scorn chef. And the story was that there's lots of guys in Tampa that have fake backs cards. I think he's legit hurt. I think this is going to be one of those, like, really competitive games.

Indy's good. Indies started off poorly. And they, you know, they had Baltimore dead to right feet at halftime. And then Lamar went, you know, decided to become an X-Men. I think Indy's pretty good. So, and I think they need him because their offense still does need a little bit of punch to it. But I don't think it has to do with that favorite facts card. What's the old saying?

Hell hath no fury like a scorned chef? Is that what the... Hell hath no wrath like a scorned personal chef. That's his saying. Remember when Celtics guard Marcus Smart told reporters that Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown just don't like to pass the ball? We thought that was pretty funny. Well, a recent report by ESPN quotes an anonymous Eastern Conference executive as saying this. They've looked like players that legitimately don't enjoy each other's success.

And it's been like that for years. The fact that it's still rearing its head is not surprising in that regard. Jason Tatum is about Jason Tatum. I don't think he cares about winning, and if he does, it's on his terms. I think that's accurate. I think that's accurate. I mean, like, look, you go back to the start of the season, and, like, the first game of the year, Jalen Brown was cooking.

He had, like, 46. Jason Tatum was some ridiculous, like 5 of 25. At the end of the game, Jason Dave kept shooting the ball, like he was the one who had 46. He's the – it's really interesting how we look at the Mamba mentality. Like, Kobe was really hard to play with. he just was you know and it was really really hard he was super talented really hard to play with and honestly like there's a good portion of his career where he took bad shots and was selfish and i think that's part of the mama mentality that jason tatem has adopted because the mom mentality became

more known later on in his career and posed after he died for his level of work ethic intensity his intense belief in himself and in all the things that he's done but I think there's a lot more to do than that and that's Jason Stewart with the news well that's the news and thanks for stopping by the herd lie news

okay let's welcome in Charlie Weiss he joins us now in the herd former head coach at Notre Dame former coach of Kansas long time of course this in the national football league and joins us in the herd on Fox Sports Radio. Charlie, let me actually start with what we saw yesterday from the Dallas Cowboys. I know that they're without their top two wide receivers, but I mean, the Raiders had them beat several times over.

I just am I wrong to be to be in the camp of, hey, Dak Prescott's a good quarterback. He's not great. The great ones win those games. And it's not just one game, right? Like the, against the Chiefs, they don't have all their players, but nine points against that D. defense. Am I crazy to say that like that's the difference between the Brady's, the Rogers, is even the breezes, as opposed to the Dax, in that the difference is slight. Some win those games and some do not. One dimensional points and he throws for 375 yards, but critical errors.

Yes, very much so. Very much so. You know, it's kind of a bizarre thing that they were actually in it late when there was, I mean, there was, and Tony Romo was even talking about it, right? There was a time it was when they were up, I think 2719, a chance to score a touchdown. They settled for a field goal that you felt like if they score a touchdown,

like this thing is over and even felt over after the field goal, but somehow they, they stuck around. All right, let's let's go to the to the bills. They lose their best cover

corner, but they look much better offensively, where are you on the bills in their postseason potential when you lose such an important Trinavius White, such a huge part of their defense? Charlie Weiss is our guest here. Doug Gautlyvin for Colin. This is the Hurt on Fox Sports Radio and the IHeart Radio app. Okay, there's lots of people drawing parallels between 2001 and that Patriots team and 2021.

Compare and contrast. Do you think it's the same? Do you think it's the same? Do you think it has the same ceiling? Do you think it's different? As a guy who's been part of that organization and now seen it from afar, what's your take on the comparisons of 01 to 21 in terms of the Patriots? Well, in defense, get the analogy there. Where is Mack in comparison? What the holes out there and said the Rams were disappointing, obviously against the Niners. Now they got the Packers on the road. But it was, you lose Robert Woods,

who's like a little things guy, right? Possession receiver, great blocker, route runner, good teammate, does a little bit of everything for a guy who does the big presumably when he's playing well, the big things well in an Odell Beckham Jr. Is that what's missing? Is the little things like what's not clicking with this team

that on paper should be performing better against better teams. So it is, it takes some time. But is it fixable? Is it fixable? Is the lack of chemistry this late in the season fixable when you add a new piece like OBJ? You'll get to think that. I tend to agree with you.

Okay, Baker has gone from, you know, it was, he was always well regarded from people I talked to in terms of how he's thought of in the locker room, that whether fans like him, or announcers like him or other coaches like him, dead matter. Those guys, they like playing for him. They like fighting for him. Feels like there's a bit of change. And I don't, I mean, like, look,

I don't care if he had nothing to do with it. When your wife puts on Instagram calling out the toughness of your teammates, automatically people are going to assume that's what Baker thinks. It's just his wife is now the filter and there is no filter there anymore. How do you fix that when you're the coach? How do you fix that when you're the quarterback? Probably a injured backup, to be honest with you. But that's me.

You've lived it. Is it better to have a healthy backup? Yeah. Hope of all the guys around him. It's his health as well. You know, I don't know. Listen, and it also depends on the level of injury. How is he hurt?

Is he injured? How much is it? But all that said, and I'll agree with you, his wife can't, she can't put that out on social media. Like she just can't do it. It's just, it's so damaging. Okay, Charlie,

the Seahawks for the last decade have been a constant in the playoffs. They've made it to two soupoles. Obviously, they went from an incredible defensive team to Russell Wilson's team. It does feel like we're at some sort of breaking point. Now, it'd be fair to say, hey, you could just move on from Russell and start over, but quarterbacks are really hard to find. They're just franchise. quarterbacks, Super Bowl caliber quarterbacks,

hard to find. So it's hard to move on from him. Pete Carroll, he's been the winningest coach they've had and they just gave an extension. Okay, you can get rid of the coach, but you still have the problems with the roster. You can get rid of the front office or do you get rid of all three? Like, what do you, if you're going to come

as an outside auditor, right? Hey, let's fix the Seahawks. Charlie Weiss, what do you do? We'll not be there. Like it's heading in a positive direction. I'm not going to second guess. whether either one of them is gone, it's heading into the direction where, you know, there's a good chance one of them won't be here.

Doug Gottlieb in for Colin. This is The Hurd. I'm here in Fox Sports Radio, the iHeart radio app. A quick reminder, I got a podcast called All Ball with Doug Gottlieb on the Hurt Podcast Network. It's pretty amazing. Yeah. Joe Bunizhar, who is my most recent guest, Joe was an assistant coach in college and then became like a workout guru for Tyron Liu and some other guys and grew that into IMG's basketball academy and then to Impact Academy. And now he's kind of synonymous with the not just a pre-draft workout, but the summer.

workout changing guys, bodies, diets, lives, et cetera, et cetera. Joe Bunazar, my guest, an all ball. A-L-L-B-A-L-L-L-L-L-B-A-L-L-L-B-A-L-L-B-A-L-L-B-A-L-B-A-L-T. These are the games this weekend that people's trash-talking over the next year are based upon. Ohio State is own Michigan for the last decade. Ten years ago today was the last time Michigan beat Ohio State. Harbaugh's never beaten him as head coach. And then, of course, you have Mike Gundy,

my own moderate Oklahoma State, who's the all-time record is Oklahoma versus Oklahoma State. 90 for Oklahoma, 18 for Oklahoma State, seven ties. 90, 18, and seven. And you have the Iron Bowl and Alabama and Auburn. You have other rivalry games as well. But those are the biggest ones. And it's just, it's interesting.

Like, you know, we have gotten to this point for Michigan. And right now Nebraska. By the way, did you guys see this spread where Nebraska was, I think, a favorite to Iowa? Iowa's 9 and 2 ranked 16th in the country. And guess what? Their trailing's having nothing to Nebraska. Nebraska's 3 and 8, 1 and 7 in conference play, but they played everybody close. Missouri, Arkansas is like they're trying to pretend like that's a rivalry now because they're in the SEC,

even though usually Missouri would play Kansas, the border war this time of year. Colorado, Utah. We already had the Egg Bowl, Georgia, Georgia Tech. Texas Tech Baylor. Is that the Battle of Brazos River? I don't know if that's Baylor, Texas Tech, I want to say. You know, there's the Iron Bowl. There's Oregon versus Oregon State.

There's the battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe, right? That's Wisconsin, Minnesota. there's Clemson, South Carolina, which didn't that end Lou Holtz's run at South Carolina where there's a bad brawl and then they couldn't go to the bowl game because of it? Notre Dame Stanford, which traditionally big rivalry and USCBYU, USC's season at some point will mercifully come to an end and they'll find a new head coach.

But these rivalry games are, I can't think of two more interesting ones, though, than Michigan and Ohio State. Just because, look, Ohio State, they're doing that same thing they did when Cardell Jones won on the national championship where they just kind of ho-humed through most of the season, survive, and now they're kicking everybody's ass. Then you got Michigan who, I thought they were the better team in the Michigan State. I know they didn't win the game. I thought they were the better team in the Michigan State.

Nonetheless, Michigan State finds a way to win, and Michigan's been really good outside of that. They just don't throw it all that well. but you have Harbaugh who has has changed, right? He hired basically a new staff. They're all younger guys and they do things a little bit differently and they try and relate to the players a little bit better. Gundy's Mike Gundy at Oklahoma State, again, similar change in, and some of it's out of necessity.

This is his first 10 years. They were all offense. He's a former quarterback. He's a former quarterback coach. He's a former offensive coordinator. The Big 12 is an offensive league. It's all about offense. Now that's a team that's built upon a great defense.

So you've you've tried it one way. Both programs have tried it one way for a long time. Michigan's tried it one Harbaugh's way for a long time. Now he's like, you know, let's bring in some new voices, some new perspectives, some new styles, and it's worked. Gundy has done it his way and it's worked, with the exception of Oklahoma, for a long time. now his defense, his entire team's makeup has changed. It's changed a great deal. And it will be, it will be fascinating to see how it looks on Sunday after the dust settles.

I saw an insane, an insane debate topic, where they were earlier today. will Michigan fire Jim Harbaugh if they lose to Ohio State? Like, no, no, they won't. And I understand that Ohio State essentially fired John Cooper because he couldn't beat Michigan. So why shouldn't, you know, and at that time, then they hired Jim Tressel and now they started beating Michigan and the rest, as they say, is history.

But they're not firing Jim Harbaugh. if he, you know, if he wins, he won his 10th game, if he goes 10 and 2 and loses to a house state. Because that would, that would, here would be Jim Harbaugh's records at Michigan. 10 and 3, 10 and 3, 8 and 5, 10 and 3, 9 and 4, 2 and 4 in a year in which was just, it's kind of a joke of it. Look, if you don't need anything better to point out how crazy last year was, Michigan, Penn State could win, Indiana could.

There you go. They played six games. And back to 10 wins. So in, what was it? In six seasons in which you could win 10 games, four of them, he's won 10, one, he's 1, he's 1, 9, and the other one was 8 and 5 in year 3. You're not firing Jim Harbaugh.

But if you start, I do think if you start winning a game, like it's one where, and I think, Oklahoma State's the same way, where there's so much pent, anger, animosity, stress. If it's a close game, you almost have to favor Ohio State. You almost have to favor Oklahoma. Because whether those players have won or not, it's just a belief. It's just like a cultural thing where this is what we do. We win this game.

On the other hand, if Michigan and Oklahoma State get leads, all that pent-up frustration usually comes out in a blowout. out win. Mike McCarthy had some interesting stuff to say. Cowboys lost to the Raiders, but it wasn't about the Raiders or about his own team. It was about the officiating yesterday.
