Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule. of two. Listen to Stuff to Bole Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever
Starting point is 00:01:33 you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Cliver Show. This is a place for raw, unfills of conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to The Clifford Show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for The Heard at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeart Radio app by searching Herd. Now let's get this party started. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go. It's our two. Greg Co. Selling five minutes live in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:02:37 It's the herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening. IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. Jayh Mac is joining me. Nick Saban next hour. J. Mack is joining me today. The Cowboys falling apart a little bit. Tyron Smith is out now for two, possibly three months.
Starting point is 00:02:53 They do not have a one. left tackle in the building with NFL snaps. That is a bad place. Again, injuries happen. Even cluster injuries happen. Ravens last year had cluster injuries at running back. Week 12, they were the number one seat because it's a great organization with a great owner, great front office, great coach, and a great quarterback.
Starting point is 00:03:15 Dallas's issue is, oh, they've lost some guys, and now they've had injuries. And it does feel like they just don't have the leadership in the front office, from the ownership, from the head coach. Dax actually, who I trust the most. If you're going owner, GM coach quarterback, Dak by far I trust the most, but they're a limitation. So it is, no Tyron Smith. What did you, J. Mack, what did you have the Cowboys win total at?
Starting point is 00:03:41 I had him around eight or nine wins. I don't have them in the playoffs. I think right now it's the Eagles or Giants winning the NFC East. Who you got? Well, I had them, I said on this show, I think last week, pound the under. Yes. They opened up at 10.5.
Starting point is 00:03:55 I thought it was the best under bet on the board. You can't find that anymore. Yeah. So to me, they feel like this morning an eight win team. Yeah. So who's winning the division? I think Philadelphia, Jalen Hertz, who's now a professional bodybuilder. I still have reservations about if he can ever sit in the pocket and complete 64% of his
Starting point is 00:04:15 throws. But they'll be productive. And in that division, you can be incredibly flawed. In 2022, I'll take the best offense in the. division, and I think Philadelphia will have the best offense. Long shot bet for you, Eagles number one seed in the NFC, only because the other divisions are very challenging for each of the leaders. Minnesota, Green Bay are going to slug it out, right? Ram should battle the Niners, and then you've got maybe the Saints versus the Bucks, and the Eagles, they could
Starting point is 00:04:39 coast and be a 12-win team. They could. That division, Washington is garbage. We know this. Well, I don't agree with you, but it's an interesting take. I'm all for interesting takes. Yes. By the way, Josh McDaniel is now the Raider coach. They've had joint practices with New England this week. And we're all, we've been saying this all offseason ad nauseum. What the hell's New England doing with this defensive coordinator, Matt Patricia? You know, I understand Belichick's loyal to guys, but calling the plays with Mack Jones year two seems I can't figure it out. I can't wait to watch what happens. But Josh McDaniel was asked about it and here was his response. I really don't know exactly, you know, what everybody. he's doing over there. I just know that, you know, they got a lot of, they got a lot of really
Starting point is 00:05:25 good coaches. I think at the end of the day, Bill has a plan for whatever he wants to do, and, you know, that plan sometimes he has foresight that some of the rest of us don't have. I didn't have it when he pushed me ahead and help me do that. So, you know, I got a lot of friends over there. I got a lot of people over there that I have a tremendous amount of respect for. coaching's coaching. So he said sometimes Bill knows things we don't. And then sometimes old legendary coaches get rigid and stubborn. Tony Laruso White Sox.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Been a bumpy year. He's a legend. Greg Popovich, the Spurs this morning have the lowest projected win total in the entire league. He couldn't get along with Kauai Leonard. DeMarjorosen left had his best year without Greg Popovich. and DeJante Murray, who was their best player, no, he's going to get rid of him, doesn't want to pay him big money. Sometimes old guys get stubborn.
Starting point is 00:06:26 Here's the interesting thing to me. Belichick always had, it was called the Patriot Way. And there were two things about the Patriot Way that mattered. Number one, team first. It's about the team, not you. That was always Bill's mantra. It's about the team above everything. The second thing was, whatever it takes to win.
Starting point is 00:06:49 I mean, they took guys, Randy Moss had a reputation. I mean, they had guys on that roster that, you know, Aaron Hernandez, draft pick, came with a ton of baggage. It was always team first and whatever it takes to win. And they did. And a couple years ago, Urban Meyer said something, and I have noted this five times probably minimum on this show, and it bothered me. Belichick told Urban Meyer.
Starting point is 00:07:14 Urban Meyer had gone to practices. And he said, you know, I asked, he goes, I'm always amazed at how these non-stars in New England, he makes some stars. I started asking him about it and he said, he made the point to me and I shared it with our team. He said, at this point in my career, said Belichick, I want to coach guys I like. I want to coach guys that want to be around and that's it. I'm not going to coach anybody else. Wait a minute. That, that ain't team first.
Starting point is 00:07:44 that's not whatever it takes to win. That's personal. That's selfish. I'm only coaching guys I like. You didn't do that when you had the dynasty. You took a lot of big swings on players. Aaron Hernandez was, think how talented he was. What he dropped to like third, fourth round?
Starting point is 00:08:06 I mean, Randy Moss came with baggage. That wasn't the Patriot way. I'm only coaching guys I want. That sounds very particular, very personal, very personal, very, very, very. comfortable. It doesn't sound like a championship team. Hey, Jalen Ramsey came to the Rams. He came with a lot of diva qualities. OBJ came to the Rams, made it work. I mean, you're living, you're not being realistic. If you think every guy in that roster is a guy you'll want to go camping with. You got to get some dudes. They come from different backgrounds, all sorts of
Starting point is 00:08:42 personalities. I'm only coaching guys I want. That is not. Not the Patriot way. It was always team first and whatever it takes to win. You know what it takes to win? Go getting guys that, you know, had a bumpy path, a little turbulence. Sometimes they're harder to coach. Sometimes care more about money than wins. You've got to take them on for a while.
Starting point is 00:09:03 So the idea that Bill, Bill knows things we don't. I'm sure he does. But I've watched Popovich struggle post-tim Duncan. Duncan's been out of their six years. They're still awful. but not even a close to a playoff team. Old and stubborn. Nothing. Bobby Knight.
Starting point is 00:09:22 Nothing punctures brilliance like stubborn. Like nothing. Greg CoSell, 42 years at NFL films. That in itself is amazing to me. 42 years. I hope they've given you a watch and a nice blazer because that is a heck of a commitment. This will be my 43rd. I guess it's a good thing you like me then, Colin, huh?
Starting point is 00:09:46 Yeah. Yeah. So I watch, now Kenny Pickett's got two preseason games. I watched him remembering what you said. And the one thing that I really like, when he makes his mind to throw it, it's out. He does, he's like, get it, see it, throw it. That's a real quality. Burroughs got some of that.
Starting point is 00:10:07 And so I watched that watching him and I come away and I'm like, I don't know. It looks pretty good to me. You've seen him two games. What are your thoughts? You know, and ultimately what you said is what quarterback is. That's the way it's taught. We're so used now to seeing guys run around. How many times this week have we seen Patrick Mahomes in the sidearm throw? And obviously Mahomes is a special, special thrower. But at the end of the day, get the ball, get it to the right receiver at the right time with the right kind of throw. In a nutshell, that's what quarterback is. When he had Fryermouth on the 24-yard or on that, a two-minute drive. He had pressure right in his face. And because he's a natural thrower,
Starting point is 00:10:49 an easy thrower, he threw the ball early to Fryermouth, and he threw it with touch and pace. And that was just normal for him, because that's the kind of passer he is. You know, I've said from day one when I watched his tape in college that he was the best quarterback in this draft, and he will start for Pittsburgh, whether they decide to do that week one or not, none of us can say, but he is the best quarterback on their roster. Wow. Well, I trust you on that. I don't like what New England's doing. I think you have to set young quarterbacks up for success. I just think that's why I don't even know if Trey Lance is great, but I think they're setting him up to succeed by getting another receiver. And Danny Gray with Brandon Ayu. They're setting him up. He should succeed.
Starting point is 00:11:35 If he doesn't, he's not built for the league. By the way, the Chargers did this. They got a Pro Bowl Center and a left tackle for Herbert. You're setting him up to succeed. Mack Jones, I don't sense it. I don't see special players in the perimeter. I like the O line. What are you making of these moves and what do you expect his development? It's been a turbulent camp, Greg.
Starting point is 00:11:58 Yeah, it has. I mean, I like Mac Jones, the player. I think from the standpoint of traits, he has one trait that I think really plays well, given that he's not a big power thrower. and that he has the ability to make throws from contested pockets because he doesn't really need to step into throws. Some quarterbacks are striders. You know, Matt Ryan's always been a strider. Trevor Lawrence is a strider.
Starting point is 00:12:21 Mack Jones does not need to stride to make throws, and he's very, very accurate, really precise with his ball location. None of us will know how this will work out with play calling and the offensive coaches. That's all speculation. They've tried to address the wide receiver position. Devante Parker at his best, and he's been hurt much of his career, but at his best, he's a legitimate boundary X, the single receiver that can win one-on-one matchups and get vertical as well. I was sad to see Taekwant Thornton get hurt, and he'll miss at least the first eight weeks,
Starting point is 00:12:56 because I really liked his tape coming out of valor. But I think it's an unknown, Colin, as to what this offense will look like. They don't have a fallback now, so they're going to play the two tight ends, I believe, or with three wide receivers, whereas last year they sort of stabilized their offense by playing with a fullback and running the football. Yeah. Yeah, it's like more pressure on Mack Jones, less to work with. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:23 So I said this a couple days ago, I think it was. I said, I still think Kansas City and Mahomes will be productive. And at the end of the year, they may score as many points. I said, but here's the difference. They've made a living off lightning strikes. the ability to come back 10, 14 down, fast. You're not going to do that with Juju Smith. That's Schuster.
Starting point is 00:13:44 That's not the same. And I said, a lot of cars can get, a lot of cars get to A to B. Sometimes you have to get A to B fast. And they have, Mahalms and Andy Reed have gotten down 10, 14 points or more in playoff games, and you never feel like they're out of it. I think they'll be productive, but I am interested if they have to score a different way. All these new receivers, how do you think it looks? Well, it's interesting.
Starting point is 00:14:08 that because they ended up doing that a year ago. Do you remember early in the season? Mahomes went through some struggles. Yes. He was not as sharp early in the season. And they settled him down by really condensing their offense quite a bit. He became kind of a timing and rhythm thrower. A lot of people forget that. There were a lot more short passes, a lot more quick game throws. That's how they settled him down. Even though they had Tyree Kill, a year ago, Tyree Kill did not catch as many lightning strikes as people might think. So Mahomes has done that and the nature of the receiver position may be such that they do more of that this year. Who knows? Preseason is always hard then to advance to the regular season, but maybe someone like Jody Fordson who's in a sense a big
Starting point is 00:14:56 wide out playing tight end, maybe they line up more with two tight end sets and do more of that because they don't feel as good about their receiving core. You know, I think Andy Reid's been doing this a long time that they'll get that figured out. But clearly Mahomes is a great thrower, and he's a very smart kid. And I think that their past game, while it might look a little different than we may remember in the big play days, they'll still be a productive passing game. So I thought Daniel Jones was a reach. I feel more second, third round quarterback, but whatever.
Starting point is 00:15:30 He is what he is. Now, Brian Daibel has a history, and we have to respect that. He gets quarterbacks who are. little loose, cleans them up mechanically. We saw it with Josh Allen. So, you know, Daniel Jones, my primary knock isn't his size or his athletic ability. He went to Duke. He's got to be pretty bright. It's been, go back to his college career. He struggled to get to 60%, 61%. You got to get the boss talking to Kevin O'Connell yesterday of the Vikings. He's like, I couldn't throw the ball accurately. And so here we go into like season number four with Daniel Jones. But Brian Dayball,
Starting point is 00:16:03 the other day, Jason McIntyre said to me, look at his completion percentage. And the preseason. I know it's preseason. But what do you expect from Daniel Jones and Dable? What will it look like? Well, it's funny you say that because I did kind of a detailed study of Daniel Jones this summer. And I was a little more impressed, to be honest, than I thought I'd be. I thought that on third down in particular, he was pretty good. You know, don't forget, at his core, even though he can run, he's not truly a mobile quarterback. He's essentially a pocket player. So what he needs is he needs to be secure in the pocket. He needs a good old line and he needs stability at the wide receiver position.
Starting point is 00:16:41 So he's comfortable delivering the ball because I'm not sure he's truly a risk thrower. I think he needs to feel comfortable. And he hasn't had that with the Giants. So again, I agree with you. I'm not suggesting that if this works with Dayball, that all of a sudden he's Tom Brady. That's not the point. But I think he can be efficient within the context of a well-schemed passing game. game, and they sort of have two different conceptual themes working here.
Starting point is 00:17:08 You have Daibel, and then you have Mike Kafka who comes from the Andy Reed School. So I think there's a lot conceptually and tactically that they can do to help Daniel Jones. And I wouldn't be surprised if he's better. Now, again, they're going to need some stability on that O line. They can't have a revolving door, or it's going to be very difficult. Yeah, it does feel like they found their tackles. I thought Andrew Thomas last year. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:30 Yeah, he's good. and I think Evan Neal is promising. So if you can get the tackles right, that's a starting position. Listen, I laugh when people say, oh, Devonte Adams, what is he going to do without Aaron Rogers? And my takeaway is, what's Aaron going to do without Devonte? I think Devonthe and Derek Carr are going to work. And I think because of Hunter Renfro and Darren Waller, you can't double him. It's going to be very difficult.
Starting point is 00:17:54 And Josh McDaniels is really good at this, bunch sets, moving people. What's your prediction on kind of Derek Card? Devante Adams. I think it'll work fine. They're going to be really difficult to defend. In some ways, I think back to last year with the Bengals, there were a lot of teams last year that started to cheat a post-safety over the top of Jamar Chase. And then you'd get one-on-ones for T. Higgins or Tyler Boyd. And I think it's going to be interesting to see how teams do that. Adams is such a good or outrunner. He's been doubled a lot. Aaron Rogers is an unbelievable throw or maybe the best we've seen, and he could still make throws,
Starting point is 00:18:33 and Adams would still win versus double teams at times. But it's going to be very difficult. And you're right, Josh McDaniels is a master of the use of personnel and particularly formations. And it's going to be really, really difficult. We'll see how teams choose to play. You know, that we have to see. But Devante Adams, Waller, who can detach from the formation, Renfro,
Starting point is 00:18:57 don't forget, McDaniels is not beholden to, rent for, oh, he's just a slot. You're going to see a lot of different formation looks from the Raiders. Yeah, McDaniel's really clever. Josh really is clever. So, you know, I don't know what Malik Willis is. He's a pro athlete, that I know. He's got some skill. He's a big strong kid. What do you make of a preseason for Malik Willis who went much later in the draft than many suspect that he would? He's got a long way to go. He's, he has no real feel for the details and the nuance and the subtleties of the position. He's a kid who can throw it hard. He's a kid who has running ability. But when it comes down to the kinds of throws, you have to
Starting point is 00:19:37 make the pace throws, the touch throws, the timing throws. He's not there yet. Plus his footwork on his drop into the pocket as he sets. He needs a lot of work there. So there are times his feet are not really under him with a firm base. And he's not truly ready to throw with the proper sequencing, with his lower and upper body working together. So his accuracy and his ball placement suffers. So he has a ways to go. Obviously, they want to give him as many snaps as possible in the preseason because they would like to be in a situation where, hey,
Starting point is 00:20:09 if Tanya L had him miss some time, they would rather put Malik Willis out there than Logan Woodside for sure. But Malik Willis does have a long way to go. And the offense he ran a liberty, you know, it was, it's not his fault, but it was kind of remedial. And that's what he grew up with in college. Yeah. Finally, I said this, is that I find Cleveland hard to root for this year.
Starting point is 00:20:34 And the way it ended for Baker Mayfield, I find him incredibly, this is a fun story for him. It's a really fun story for Baker. And I'll be rooting for him. Caroline is interesting. They're all lines, a little patchwork. But when McCaffrey was healthy, Darnold started 3-0. They got a couple of nice receivers, DJ Moore. Robbie can beat you deep.
Starting point is 00:20:56 And Matt Ruhl's a clever offensive guy. Are they laying in the weeds a little bit with Baker? Is there something there with them, or do you think they're just kind of a rebuild six-seven win team? Oh, hard to say, but I don't think they're rebuilt. Baker Mayfield's a professional quarterback. You can say what you want. I mean, he can line up and play. He's a very good thrower of the football.
Starting point is 00:21:16 I think ultimately what Matt Ruhl would want to do, and hopefully McCaffrey's healthy, is it all starts with the run game. Baker's used to that kind of office. offense. That's what Cleveland was. It all starts with the run. I think this is a team that would probably line up more with three wide than with multiple tight ends, but I still think the run game will be the foundation. McCaffrey is a big time receiver as well. So I think this is a good spot and a good offense, a good scheme for Baker. Because Baker, the bottom line is he's a six-foot quarterback. Six-foot quarterbacks need the scheme to help them a lot because they're six
Starting point is 00:21:52 feet. So they need to be clean. They need to be secure. They need to be comfortable. And the run game and the play action elements and dimensions that work off that, Colin, will help Baker a lot. That's, that was the case in Cleveland two years ago. Greg Cocell, isn't it great? It's so comfortable for me. It's like, it's like the robe and the coffee in the morning. Thursdays, next 20 weeks, Greg CoSell, we all get smarter. My friend, it's great seeing you again. Thanks, Colin. Really appreciate it. You bet. The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeart radio app. Search herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like.

Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:24:17 I'm Sam Jette. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:24:42 We also have AIDS on the table right now. They're finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games.
Starting point is 00:25:09 And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Trip Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses.
Starting point is 00:25:36 Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way.
Starting point is 00:25:59 Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. Big Ten goes to Ireland, where Ramir Johnson leads the Huskers against the Wildcats. It's the airlingous college football classic Saturday at noon, Eastern on Fox. I am so jacked up for college football. I can't see straight. Big a year for Scott Frost, Scott Frost and Nebraska.
Starting point is 00:26:22 They're all big for Scott Frost. I've been hearing that for like, what, four years now? I've been supporting him. Scott Frost, I got your back. The rest of America does not. I'll take Nebraska in this game. Way to go out of a limb there, 13-point favorites. Nice job there, coward, yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:37 It's great to have it back. You can feel it now. It's kind of cooling down. It feels like fall weather. Here's Jay Mack with the news. No. Turn on the news. This is the Herd Line News.
Starting point is 00:26:48 Let's talk about a quarterback. We don't really talk about a lot on this show. Trey Lance, he's entering his first season as the 49er starter, doing so on a team that has Super Bowl aspirations. He'll also need to replace Jimmy G. Who already led them to Super Bowl 54. Despite the pressure, Nick Bosa believes Lance has everything he needs. I think he's in probably the best position you could be in
Starting point is 00:27:11 as a first-year quarterback with a defense. like us and a good O line. So he's got all the help. He just needs to, I mean, I'm not going to give him advice. Like I'm the QB coach, but I think if he doesn't make big mistakes, then we're going to be in good shape.
Starting point is 00:27:32 That's kind of how I feel. I think if you, you know, Garapolo, who I defend more than others, to a large degree, manage the offense. And they asked Jimmy to make about three throws a game. can tray now tray we know tray's a better deep ball thrower we also know he's more athletic can can't try make three to four big plays a game and my answer is yes he can that's why i have him as a playoff team i the two rosters i watched in the preseason that we're we're like eye-opening
Starting point is 00:28:00 buffalo and san francisco to me have the two best rosters in the league right now i think they're i think they're really good but i don't love their defensive front i think they have good edge rushers i don't i don't love them through the middle defensively and derwin james is a concern. I don't think this team has a flaw. I think it, now that Brandon Iukas popped, I get Kittle, Elijah Mitchell. They went and drafted another power running back out of LSU. I don't see the week. I think they're all lines better than people say. And according to reports, this Buford kid they got in like the fourth round, he's popped on the offensive line. So I think their roster is set for a Super Bowl. You know what the flaw is. Jimmy G. potentially still being on
Starting point is 00:28:38 the roster. And the 49ers have a two or three game losing streak. And then it's like, do we just go to the veterans so we get to the playoffs? It is a, I've said this, they're the most interesting team in the league. I'm not sure they're the best. This is the most interesting team in the league. You root for chaos, so you're rooting for it. I don't know if it's chaos. I root for drama.
Starting point is 00:28:56 There'll be drama here. All right. Tom Brady, next story. He's been in the headlines all off season. Most recently after Dana White revealed Brady almost joined the Raiders in 2020, 2020, before John Gruden nicks the deal. Former Buck's quarterback Chris Sims, wasn't surprised at the news. saying Gruden's ego.
Starting point is 00:29:16 Oh boy. Couldn't handle a star quarterback. Here's Chris Sims. He didn't want to deal with the pressure of Tom Brady. He wasn't going to have excuses to get out of that one in case things didn't work out. He couldn't blame Tom Brady if the offense didn't work. He would lose control a little bit, too, because Brady was going to be able to talk to Mark Davis, the Raiders owner. I want this. That's where I find it fascinating.
Starting point is 00:29:38 Even when I was in Tampa and there was the Brett Farr flirting and he ultimately went to the Jets, I always wondered if Gruden really wanted Brett Farr's. far of either. Well, I think that something that is undeniable is John's ego is healthy. And now this is the second person who has talked about this on this show. I don't know if it's right, but these are not hot takes. These feel like foundationally, these are legitimate arguments that Gruden is a control guy. I mean, I still don't get this. If you look at the Raiders drafting, they've found some gems in later rounds. That's the scouts and mail. but if you look at their first round picks, some of their early picks,
Starting point is 00:30:18 they're huge misses. Well, why would that be? That's kind of the Pete Carroll thing in Seattle. Schneider's had some great late round successes, but the first round picks for Seattle are bad. Why? Because the theory is that Pete would jump in and Gruden would jump in and say, that's the guy I want.
Starting point is 00:30:38 And it's like, no, no, no, that's when you get Rashad Penny as a first round draft pick. Or you get Alex Leatherwood over drafted. So, and I, I am speculating, but I was told by somebody in the Seattle organization, I was told us two years ago that Pete would kind of put his stamp on a first pick. Get out of the way. Belichick. I thought Seattle had the best draft in seven years, and it was reportedly a John Snyder draft. And I think Gruden, he had a 51 percent power move over Mayock. Now, come on now.
Starting point is 00:31:09 You hire a GM as an organization, and you're not going to let him make the first picks in the draft. That's his job. But isn't the owner generally going to side with a quarterback over a coach? Well, it depends. Remember, when Mark Davis hired Gruden, I mean, at that point, we didn't, Derek Carr wasn't as well thought of as he is today after leading that team to the playoffs. It was a Gruden's organization, right? I just remember the stories about Brady going to Kraft and saying, why did you guys draft
Starting point is 00:31:37 Jimmy Garabolo? I don't want him here. Get him out of here. And then Kraft ended up trading him, remember? And I just, you got to side with the quarterback. most important position in sports, Colin? I think you do. All right, let's go to the final story here.
Starting point is 00:31:48 Kevin Durant, back to the NBA and the Nets. They had a wild offseason full of drama after KD made and later rescinded a public trade request. Part of the reason the deal never played out was due to the Nets' high asking price. Oh, boy, with an anonymous NBA exec saying, teams don't want to overpay for someone who has proven he will burn your house down. That seems a little... That's a little excessive. He didn't...
Starting point is 00:32:11 First of all, Golden State had a defendant. him. Yeah. Or no, no. Oklahoma City, I defended him. I did. Golden State, I thought it was a terrible business decision. But he didn't burn their house down.
Starting point is 00:32:21 The bottom line is he got him two finals MVP's and two titles. So he didn't burn anybody's house. By the way, you can say all you want about Kevin Durant and Brooklyn. Dude play when he's healthy, he plays on both ends. He takes the big shots. He plays his butt off. He appears to be pretty coachable. So I thought his move out of Golden State was horrible judgment.
Starting point is 00:32:43 Absolutely I would take Kevin Durant as long as I don't have to gut my franchise. Isn't Kyrie the one who burns down houses? He burns bridges everywhere he goes. Kevin Durant does not. Just because he asked for a trade. Like he played through the injuries, nearly beat the bucks two years ago in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:32:59 He played this year. Kyrie Irving is the problem in Brooklyn. It's not Kevin Durant. Well, I think the criticism of Kevin that's fair is I'm not going to give up my future, multiple draft picks, and multiple stars. because what happened in Brooklyn was the chemistry was good, and they traded it to get Kevin Durant and draft picks.
Starting point is 00:33:20 So I would give up draft picks to get Kevin, or I'd tweak my roster. Like Boston, Jalen Brown, a bench player, and two picks. I feel like it's not crushing my core. And my guys are mostly young, so I'm not. But the idea that I'm going to do like what Minnesota did, no. You can't, you can't, and that's a fair criticism of Kevin.
Starting point is 00:33:40 Kevin, you weren't happy in Golden State, and that place is hummed. That's Apple. Brooklyn can't get picks for, they have to get picks for Durant because they don't have any because of the James Arden deal. So they have no picks for like the next three years. You can't be awful and have no picks. So yeah, Durant just in a no-win situation. I'll defend Kevin Durant on this one, though. Same here.
Starting point is 00:33:59 J-Mac with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Ly news. And I'll say it again, I do like the Patrick Beverly move for the Lakers. I think it's the move before the move. I don't think that's their last move. But AD, Beverly, LeBron, and an additional shooter, that's a team.
Starting point is 00:34:21 Can I ask you something? So we haven't mentioned Kendrick Nunn, who was a big free agent signing for them last year. So they got None who's healthy. He was hurt all last year. Beverly and Russ. Which of those three is getting traded? Well, Pat Riley gave up on None. So if he gave up on None, I give up on None.
Starting point is 00:34:38 Westbrook's going to get moved. They don't want Westbrook in the building. That's why they keep dropping these stories to make him look bad. They want him out. They want him to go, get me out of this organization. I'm not going to be humiliated. I mean, it's obvious what they're doing. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:37:31 I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed. That's correct. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:37:49 Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. For 20 years, Greg Bedard's been covering the NFL. He's got a Patriots podcast, founder, editorial director of Boston Sportsjournal.com. He has been at these joint practices. The good, the bad, and the ugly. He's covered everything for New England. and I've been reading him for a long time and following his tweets.
Starting point is 00:39:35 And oh, my, holy crow, it's been ugly. So obviously, it's a mess. And the joint practices are kind of fascinating because it's not a game and you can kind of work on things. And you see, you know, sometimes you can hide certain things. And in these joint practices, what was the one thing with New England's offense, the most discouraging part, Greg, in your opinion that you saw in these practices? that look let me first say the Patriots did have a good day yesterday so I don't want that to go unsaid and they did a good job in two minute warning situational stuff had some touchdowns against the Raiders but in general the most disturbing thing is they can't block anything under center I mean it's a it's a disaster even yesterday when they were good they ran the ball five times four of them got stuffed at the line of scrimmage or worse they ran two screens that were stopped immediately like there is just a lack of attention to detail up front and what they're doing that.
Starting point is 00:40:32 I've never seen, I mean, I've never seen in my time covering the NFL. I mean, it looks like an expansion type offense when you're talking about it. And it's scary to watch. The biggest thing is, the biggest thing is, look, Colin, we know Mack Jones had a good rookie year last year. Yeah. And, you know, you would think, all right, he can build off that. Everybody's back. Only Devante Parker and Cole Strange are new in this offense.
Starting point is 00:40:57 You would think, okay, he's going to build on that. But what they're doing to him, new coordinator, new quarterbacks coach, new playbook, new, you know, you're not protecting him up front. It's straight out of how to ruin your young franchise quarterback playbook that we've seen from countless terrible teams over the years. I never thought I'd see the Patriots be one of those teams, but it looks like they're going to be. Okay, Mack Jones body language. That's the kind of thing I can't see. You see it. Do you think he knows he's a little bit in trouble?
Starting point is 00:41:27 Is he uneasy? He knows. He knows. And you can hear it in some of the quotes that he's given in the offseason. I mean, look, Mack Jones is a very smart quarterback. He has been coached by the best. He knows what it is to be coached by the best and what that looks like and how to be prepared and how to set up an offense, how to set up plays. And you can tell that he knows that he's not getting that right now. And it's gone through the whole offense. I mean, when they take the field at some points, look, yesterday was a good day. for them. They were excited. Good for them to celebrate that. But almost every other practice, since about day one, the offense comes off the field and they just look miserable because they have had very little success. We'll see if they can build off what happened yesterday, but I certainly have my doubts. You know, I said this earlier in the show is that years ago, Bill had a comment to Urban Meyer that, you know, I'm only going to coach guys I want to coach.
Starting point is 00:42:23 And the Patriot Way, I lived in Connecticut for a lot of those Super Bowls. The Patriot way was team first, ego, second. And I read that quote and I think, Bill, that's Greg Popovich. I don't want to coach Kauai Leonard. Well, Kauai Leonard's great, figured out. Like, I read that and it feels very particular and very selfish. I'm coaching who I want to coach.
Starting point is 00:42:44 That quote has bothered me for a couple years. Does it mean anything or am I overreacting? No, I think you're 100% right. I mean, you know, you look at their roster, especially compared to some of the teams in the division, Buffalo, for sure. Miami, you know, probably we'll see with the new head coach. But they are distinctly untalented at a lot of places.
Starting point is 00:43:04 I mean, the teams that are practiced against them talking to, you know, their front office, their coaches, the Panthers and the Raiders, like, you know, they're like, the Patriots can't cover in the secondary. They have nothing down the field. Devante Parker was their big sort of addition. You know, the Raiders just wrote them all out of bounds in the two practices and he never really did anything. They do have some talent at running back, but if they can't get to the line of scrimmage, what good does it do?
Starting point is 00:43:32 And also, Colin, it's not just the players. I mean, look at his decisions with the coaching staff. He could have kept Carm Brissillo, the offensive line coach. He had another year left on his deal. But because his buddy, Matt Patricia, was available, he let Carm go to Vegas with Josh McDaniels. You know, why not keep him and have some continuity? because he deferred to Matt Patricia. You know, Joe Judge, same thing.
Starting point is 00:43:58 I mean, if you're going to run an offense and want the best for Mack Jones, why wouldn't you bring in a guy like Adam Gase, who say what you want about him as a head coach? But he's a hell of an offensive coordinator and play caller and play designer. And, you know, that would have been sort of the best thing for Mac Jones. Instead, he's being coached by a defensive coordinator and a special teams coach. Yeah. You know, Brady always had a very, and still does, kind of a squeaky clean public image.
Starting point is 00:44:30 But, you know, I guess if you're in the public eye for 25 years, you could be a politician, a CEO, or a quarterback, there's some dings, right? And there's spy gate and deflate gate. And, you know, there's been a couple of things. Now, when the stories come out about, oh, he was talking to the dolphins when he was a patriot. bit. And now Bruce Ariens gets reassigned. You know, he retires, unretires, 11 days gone at camp. I'm not going to speculate. Is today in New England, you know, obviously nobody's happy when he leaves. I get that. But there has been a little ding to the squeaky clean, right? He's the politician. We've pulled back the cover a little bit. It's not always as it appears. Any of this stuff
Starting point is 00:45:19 stick to you? Do you, any of these bad PR moves or this weird off-season stick with you? In the short term, yeah. I mean, in the long term, no. But I mean, you look at both Brady and Belichick, and, you know, we've seen this with other stars and other sports. I mean, the longer some of these guys hang on, the coochier and weirder and, you know, the more control freaky they get. And I think, you know, you can draw a parallel between, you know, Brady and Belichick in this regard is that as they keep hanging on and sort of doing this battle away from each other and almost for supremacy on who was the bigger reason for the Patriot's success, you know, both of them are making missteps that you're just like, really? Did you really want to do that? I mean,
Starting point is 00:46:01 I guess we'll have to see. Yeah. So let's put the Patriots schedule up there. Circle back to the Patriots. I picked him for third. I don't have them as a playoff team. I think I can I can make an argument. The Jets have better offensive personnel. I think they've hit on a couple of really nice players in the last couple of drafts. I look at this schedule and I'll tell you what, Greg, the last seven weeks from Kirk Cousins on, that could get really dire. That is, that is Kirk Cousins, Josh Allen, Kyler, Murray, Terrick, Carr, Burrow, Josh Allen, Tua. I think they're an eight-win team. You look at that schedule. What do you see? Well, before the season, when the schedule came out, I put them at nine and eight. After what I've seen,
Starting point is 00:46:45 seen in this training camp and sort of the direction that I see them going. I think that's, that might be the best case scenario. You know, I certainly have my doubts now after what's gone on for the last month. But there's no question that the close of the schedule is tough. I mean, you put Kirk Cousins there. I wouldn't. But they, they start on. I look more at the start. I mean, at Miami, at Pittsburgh, the Ravens, and at Green Bay. I mean, if they don't go two and two, there. They do have a middle of the schedule where they can do some work, including the Vikings. Yeah. You know, if they're okay, they should be favored. They could go 7 and 0 in that stretch, but they got to go two and two to start the season. And I don't know if they can do that.
Starting point is 00:47:29 Yeah. Good stuff. Greg Bedard has a Patriots podcast. You've been doing this for a long time, Sports Illustrated, Boston Globe and others. Great, great stuff. I appreciate your insight and your honesty. This was great, Greg. Thank you so much. Anytime. Thanks, Colin. You bet. Yeah, that was pretty That was pretty, you know, I said it is harder for a local reporter to be brutally honest. He's got to go to practice today or tomorrow, whenever it is. So to say what he was saying is, you know, Devonte Parker can make some plays. He's not going to separate from you, but I did think he was a decent addition. But, you know, again, I'll say it about the Jets.
Starting point is 00:48:06 You start looking at the Jets, the last two drafts. They have hit on some really nice offensive pieces. Buffalo stacked. And we know Miami went and paid for Cedric Wilson. So the New England, to me, as the least dynamic offense. Now, they had the best coach. But if he's saying the old lines bad, the one thing Brady always had, Brady didn't always have great defenses.
Starting point is 00:48:29 He didn't always have great running games. He didn't always have great receiving cores. Brady always had good offensive lines with Dante Scarnacchio. So if they're not blocking up front and they're not going to have much of a running game, you're just telling Mack Jones, you need Mac, to be Josh Allen. You know, Josh Allen has not had a great O-line since he entered the league, nor they have a great running game. But they can win shootouts because Josh, like Big Ben early or Cam early, he can make plays with his feet. If this O-line can't block, this is a bad football team.
Starting point is 00:48:59 Because that's the one constant for Brady. Even when he didn't have the playmakers, they could control the clock. They could kind of manipulate your defense. They could keep, stay on the field. if this is a three and out, six and out offense, watch out. And by the way, that opener against the dolphins is kind of spicy now because Miami matches up with Howard and Jones two good cornerbacks. And if you can't get separation on the outside, like where's Mack Jones going, bad offensive line against a dolphins front that added Melvin Ingram in the offseason? I think I might have to take the dolphins in week one against Patriots. Dolphins swept them last year, by the way. I know, I know.
Starting point is 00:49:37 I know. Can you detect some glee in you with the Patriots? struggling as a Jets fan. Yes, I can't. All right, Nick, Saban hour three. Haven't talked to Nick in a long time. Be fun as to heard. Another podcast from some SNL, late night comedy guy, not quite.
