Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Ah, here we go, hour two and a Wednesday, live in Los Angeles. It's the herd, wherever you may be, however you may be listening.
Starting point is 00:02:40 Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1. I swear I'm going to wear a vest one of these days. What is this obsession you have with Vest? This is the second time you brought it up now. I'm getting concerned. Anne likes me to stay current and young, and I've got a bunch of new shoes. And this look is very accountant. I want to be more dynamic.
Starting point is 00:02:58 So you feel like tossing a vest in the mix is the... I think a vest would make people take notice. Oh, yeah. That's, it would do that for sure. What kind of vest are you talking about? Cowboy vest, leather, maybe a leather vest. That's what I was concerned about. Well, what kind of vest would you be okay with?
Starting point is 00:03:19 None, zero. But I just wanted to know what kind of direction you were going in. A leather. It's a very like I wore a puffy. It wasn't a vest. like the, you know, it's kind of a vest, I guess. But it's like the puffy one that you wear, so, you know, so you can use your arms. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:34 That's a big look. But I don't think that's, is that a vest? Is that called a vest? I feel like it's not a vest. I don't know. Well, I'm, you know what? But do the vest that you're talking about are what's concerned me? I think, right, I got it a little boring.
Starting point is 00:03:44 And I think it's time to get. I feel like there's other ways we can jazz up your look, Colin, without going full leather vests with, you know, bangles and such. Okay. Well, I'm going to give everything a consideration. So, you know, it's the time of the year when the NBA playoffs start, and we have to listen to grumpy people tell us about the good old days of the NBA. Oh, it was so good years ago. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:10 We romanticize the old 80s NBA. Yeah, the Lakers and the Celtics were really good, and I love Dr. Jay. But you would have like three to four starters on like playoff teams that couldn't shoot. players are much better today, much more skilled. Everybody can handle a ball. Everybody can shoot a jumper. Almost everybody can pass. Not these big, slow guys lumbering down the floor.
Starting point is 00:04:34 So Draymond Green, because everybody's saying, man, guys in the 80s would knock Draymond Green out. He responded. And so it baffles me when every guy just because they played in the 80s, just because they played in the 90s, It's like, man, if you played an R-Day, you get knocked out. Like, no, not really because it wouldn't be you. So, okay, you're saying Rick Mahorn would have knocked me out.
Starting point is 00:05:02 Rick Mahorn probably knocked you out. Like Bill Lambert probably lays you out. So were there enforcers of that time? Of course. Would they have knocked you out? Of course, their fine was also $2. That's right. The fine now is a million.
Starting point is 00:05:20 So his point is, 99% of you guys were getting bullied by their bullies. So stop tell me how tough your game was. Charles Barkley was pushing you all around. There was one Barclay. 90s basketball has been overly romanticized. And my guess is because the Knicks were relevant for one of the few times in my life. And when New York's relevant, they just want to, you know, we have to make sure we pay attention to them. But the Pacers' Knicks series were a free throw shooting contest.
Starting point is 00:05:47 One of the games was like 88 to 68. It was awful and unwatchable, but we do 30 for 30s on anything that's happened in New York, which, you know, it's the biggest city in the country. These warrior teams would run the Pacers and the Knicks off the floor. They would run all those teams in the 80s outside of maybe the Lakers and the Celtics off the floor. Small ball, you think all these Charles Oakleys would have been able to give me a break? I mean, the Knicks shooting guard was John Starks, who was. once went two for 18 in a game seven. He was their first or second best shooter. He went 0 for 11 and threes in a game seven. So can we stop? Can we, and that's their shooting guard for the
Starting point is 00:06:31 Knicks. I mean, can we slow down a little on how great the basketball was? It's funny how it works, but athletes get bigger and stronger. We now have so many players internationally. So the pool of players is much larger. It's like baseball. We've never had this many good baseball players. They come from everywhere. I mean, in the NBA, I can remember, you know, you go back to these 80s or early 90s, there'd be that one international player in the Eastern Conference you talk about. And that one got, everybody's got great. Folks, look at our, look at our first team all NBA.
Starting point is 00:07:07 Embed, Luca, Janice, some of the best players in the league. Many of them are from an international pool that has exploded over the last 10 years. So spare me on all these tough guys. Tough guys back then couldn't shoot. Tough guys now can play and not close. These warrior teams would run everybody in the 80s off the floor except maybe the Lakers. Maybe the Celtics. They'd run the Sixers off the floor.
Starting point is 00:07:35 I'll tell you that. They'd run that Houston team off the floor. All these tough guys. Give me a break. It's like you're all UFC fighters out there. All right. Let's bring in our guy, Mark Medina. It's been covering the NBA for a lot.
Starting point is 00:07:48 long time. Covered the Warriors, covered the Lakers. He's covered them all. Now he covers NBA writer, NBA.com. Okay, I'm going to throw this at you. Good to see you. So I don't believe, I think LeBron is very calculated. And he's just, you know,
Starting point is 00:08:04 smart people are. And so he's now twice talked about oh, we'll love to play with Steph Curry. LeBron knows the Warriors have a better owner, a better GM, a better coach, and a better star. You don't want to keep playing for this team. He knows Anthony Davis is not a worker. It is
Starting point is 00:08:24 understood. Anthony is not a worker. He's not a guy that's banging out these work. It's understood in the league. And he's looking at it thinking, okay, even if we get rid of the Westbrook contract, we got no draft picks, we got an old roster, we can't defend. I'm easily the best player on the team. If the Lakers got a call and they said, got to have a matching salary, Clay Thompson, Jonathan Coominga, Gary Payton, and two draft picks. Should the Lakers say yes? If I'm Rob Polink, I would double check.
Starting point is 00:08:59 Is this really Bob Myers on the phone, or am I being hacked? So you say, you like it? I would say yes. And then, hey, where do I sign here? Because look, LeBron James, with all due respect, he played similar to what he looked like in his prime during the Cleveland Cavaliers years last season, his first stint. And they didn't even make the play in tournament.
Starting point is 00:09:18 and that's a product of there were a lot of old injured role players that weren't able to make life easier for him. And then his co-star Anthony Davis could stay healthy. Russell Westbrook couldn't adjust to any role as the first, second, or third option. So yes, but I think it takes two to tango, and I don't think the Warriors would ever entertain that idea. To be clear, I think philosophically, LeBron James would fit in with anyone, let alone the Warrior stars. He plays the game the right way. he knows how to adjust his role as a playmaker and score. But when you're assembling a team, one, he's going to command a lot of that salary.
Starting point is 00:09:56 So they're going to have to give up what partly makes the Warriors special with their depth and strength and numbers. So I don't think the Warriors would entertain that, but it's certainly a fun discussion with us. And I think if you're the Lakers, if you're LeBron, for sure, that would be a no-brainer. Yeah. So, you know, you've covered this Warriors team for a long time. do you think Clay Thompson this now is what he is or he's going to come back? Because as I watch him, he's not quite always comfortable with his body. Some of it could be the Celtics defense.
Starting point is 00:10:29 He was great in the last game against the Mavs. Is this kind of what he's going to be? I'm bullish on Clay Thompson. I don't think he's the finished product because I anticipated what we're seeing in real time after talking to people not only with the Warriors' staff, but outside medical experts where they said, look, coming off a two and a half year absence with pretty serious injuries, you're going to see flashes of Clay playing really well offensively, but you'll see the Russ defensively. He's not going to be the same player. But I think that next
Starting point is 00:11:01 season, he'll be the Clay of old. But in the short term, that is a challenge that the Warriors are facing with the NBA finals. Because while I have optimism that Clay Thompson will be due for one of his game six performances. I don't think the Warriors can afford to wait for him to have that in game six. They would like to have that in game three tonight because outside of Steph Curry, there has not been a reliable score so far in this Boston series. And while I do think I wrote this for NBA.com that the Warriors title fortunes were mostly depend on their defense because of the importance of it in the finals and the fact
Starting point is 00:11:37 that they were a really good defensive team in the past championship runs, they need more offense than just Steph Curry's brilliance. You know, I said, I did not pick Golden State this year, and here was my takeaway. They're a little old and expensive with their veterans, and they're not quite there with their young guys. Wiseman, Cominga, Moody, they're not quite ready. I think next year, Clay's better, young guys are more ready. Comingo would play in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:12:05 You wouldn't have to play Draymond, Steph as much with Jordan Poole. I am surprised by what I'm seeing. Are you surprised? Yes and no. I was surprised that they stormed out the beginning of the season, first in the West. I thought that they would be always hovering around the third and fourth place marker because,
Starting point is 00:12:26 they can rely on Steph, Clay, and Dremont, but they have a lot of young pieces and also other players that just never played with the Warriors during the championship run. But now that we're fast-forward in the finals, I'm not surprised that the Warriors are in the position that they are because I think that they really thread the needle pretty well of relying on their championship tested players, but also rebuilding or developing players on the fly and also putting veteran and young players in a position to succeed to fulfill positional needs and apply patchwork when those all stars were out. And I don't know if that's going to be enough against the Celtics.
Starting point is 00:13:04 They're a really good team. You've made a great point the last few days about the importance. of Robert Williams III, but the reality is there's just so many balls in the air in the finals. I don't know where this is going to go. I think Warriors and Seven, but the Celtics have their own case. You know, it's interesting. We were saying this. This is the way sports is.
Starting point is 00:13:23 If Matt Stafford doesn't make one no-look pass, we may just be like, you can't trust Matt Stafford. You know, in the big game, and now we're like, legend could be better than Aaron Rogers. We're very unfair. We're very unfair about this stuff. If the Celtics lose, and you got Jason Tatum here verbalizing, I'm not a star, I don't know if I'm the leader. I guess everybody could say, just bring it back, but Chris Middleton and Milwaukee will be favored. I still think Maxie is becoming a star in Philadelphia, so I have Embeded, Maxie, Thibble, Tobias. I think they could move hardened for pieces and be really formidable.
Starting point is 00:14:06 Miami adds a Bradley Beale. you don't want any part of that. Are we sure if they lose this series and Tatum doesn't play well? Are we sure Boston's just bringing them all back? Remains to be seen. I mean, Brad Stevens has been very bullish and being able to upgrade the roster around them. But at the same time, there was that temptation earlier in the season
Starting point is 00:14:27 when they were going through the struggles, that this was the conclusion that, oh, Jalen Brown and Jason Tatum tandem isn't going to work, and they held on to it. But I think that you make a really good point. And I think that Jason Tatum, he's not a superstar, but he's that 1A kind of guy. So maybe realistically having that tandem with Brown is the best way to go. Now, you obviously want to have a superstar dominant player that you know what you're going to get on a day-in-and-day-out basis.
Starting point is 00:14:59 But I think Jason Tatum has a lot of positive attributes of his willingness to blend his talents with Jalen Brown. And also, I think you make a good point that even at 24 years old, you usually get a sense of who a guy is and what makes them tick. But I think that he is about the right things. He has the good work habits. That's great. That's true. He addresses his deficiencies. The knock on him before was, hey, high volume shooter.
Starting point is 00:15:24 Now he's more efficient. Game one, he didn't shoot the ball well, but he was a really good distributor. But I think when we're looking at the expectations, we all thought that he is this superstar player. I don't think he's there yet. it really is going to be interesting because all four of their players, the Celtics, were in their prime. And the Warriors, if they lose this series, you start looking at it thinking, boy, Wiggins is expensive and he had a couple of games he didn't show. We can't break up, Draymond, Steph, and Clay. But Wiseman's not really doesn't fit.
Starting point is 00:15:59 I don't necessarily think the Warriors just, quote, bring it back. I mean, I think there's a possibility. I like Wiggins a lot, but after the six missed layups, the other game, he does not give you the alpha you want, although I do love him, but he's very expensive for what you get. I don't feel like they'll stand pad, will they? Yeah, Joe Leakeup operates, it might sound simple, but there's a lot of complexities to it. He's about winning, and so his devotion to Steph, Clay, and Dremont isn't because of any
Starting point is 00:16:30 nostalgia. It's because they've been winning a lot of games, and he knows what makes them special. So I think win or loss, he's going to lean toward keeping those guys because they have distinguishable skill sets, and it's easier to roster build around them. But at the same time, he's a results-oriented owner. So at the end of the day, winning is all that matters. And you know what's interesting, too, and this happens in sports. You see it in all sports, where a player gets elevated in a culture. A lot of people were done with Wiggins when he got there. And now we're like, who, he was a trade piece for the first year and a half.
Starting point is 00:17:08 The truth is with Wiggins, this may be what he is. And the best version of it, you move him and get more value that he's worth. Yeah, without a doubt. And the interesting thing with Wiggins is that on one hand, you don't always know what you're going to get offensively, but he has been remarkably amazing on defense, especially during these playoffs with shutting. down Luca Donchich at certain parts of the game. He was a huge factor why Jason Tatum didn't
Starting point is 00:17:33 shoot efficiently, especially in game one. And so I think with the Warriors, the good thing that they have win or lose Hainan next season is they don't necessarily have to make tough decisions quite yet. Yes, they can entertain giving Jordan Poole the extension. Kavan Looney is going to be a free agent, but some of the tough decisions from a cap standpoint won't be until next year because that's when Andrew Wiggins will be a free agent. So maybe next year, win or lose is when they try to gauge, okay, what kind of market value can we get for some of these guys versus keeping everything? I mean, I think at worst case scenario, whether it's Jordan Poole or Andrew Wiggins,
Starting point is 00:18:13 they're solid complementary pieces. It's probably a stretch to think they're franchise changing players. But with the Warriors infrastructure, when you have Steph Clay and Draymond, that's okay. And I think as long as that core is healthy and still play at their best, they're going to be willing to spend the kind of money necessary to keep those guys because they feel like that's the right championship formula. You know, it's interesting. I think you watch the playoffs, and that's how we judge players. I mean, Michael, six for six is the greatest accomplishment, right? And you watch the Warriors play, and I'm Phoenix, and I'm like, we can't play from behind.
Starting point is 00:18:54 DeAndre Aiton's not good on the floor late. He's not a terrible free throw shooter, but he's limited offensively. He's not a great defensive big. He's certainly not Janice or Gobert. And he's got a little bit of a temper. And the sons are in a space where Luca hits threes and all of the guys in the West. A lot of these teams, here comes Kauai and Paul George next year. If I'm Phoenix, I've said this, I'd move DeAndre Aiton and I'd get, and I think he has value in the league.
Starting point is 00:19:18 There's a lot of teams that want an athletic, kind of a bam out of a bayou, DeAndre Aten, give me 17 a game. Not a great offensive player, but a big that runs well. I think Phoenix forget the regular season. I think they have to look at this postseason. Dallas is getting better. Warriors are not getting worse. Clippers are getting healthy.
Starting point is 00:19:40 Lakers can't be as bad. If I'm Phoenix, I take a big swing this off seat, and it sounds counterintuitive because they were so good. The playoffs are showing you the truth. Yeah. And to use a line from. Draymond Green who you know it well. It's about getting 16 game players, meaning the playoffs, right? And what's very surprising about DeAndre Ains is, yes, he had some learning hiccups early in his career,
Starting point is 00:20:04 but it really seemed like he turned a corner last year during the finals and that he was going to be on that pathway toward gain the extension. He did not get that, but they thought, okay, he's going to continue to grow. And then all of a sudden, he ran to a brick wall. And I'm with you that because of what we saw in the playoffs. The sons are better off trying to get something in a sign and trade. Now, if that doesn't happen and, you know, he comes back, they sign him as a restricted free agent. That's not the end of the world, but I think they have to be mindful, okay, what can they do leading to the trade deadline to get some pieces in return? Because even though it's nice to have size in today's NBA, it's not as important as it was before. It's more important to have
Starting point is 00:20:46 versatility. And it's most important to have guys that are about the right things that can do multiple things. And that's why partly bringing this back to the Warriors, they weren't so worried about not having a traditional big man because they were really leaning in on, hey, we have a lot of good players that can do multiple things that are about the right things. I think that's the winning formula in today's league. Okay. So if I'm the Utah Jazz, I would keep Donovan Mitchell, I would move Gobert. I think his contract is prohibitive, and he's limited offensively. And I think you can get a lot for Donovan Mitchell, though he can be a little ball-centric.
Starting point is 00:21:23 He no longer plays defense, though he was great in college. Your guess on what they do, because Quinn Snyder left for a reason. We have hit a wall. And I think the owner thinks we've hit a wall. Gober and Donovan don't like each other. It's obvious. What do you do? What do you think a reasonable move going forward?
Starting point is 00:21:42 because they're a very good, well, they're the Packers. They're always well-wrung. Yeah, I think the first step is see what they can get for Rudy Gobert. And look, to be clear, I don't think it has the reason should have anything to do with whether Donovan, Mitchell, and Rudy Gobert get along or not. This is a results-oriented league. That's how professional sports work. But the reality is whether it's patched up or not, the results haven't been there. They haven't been able to get deep in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:22:07 And one of the primary reasons isn't necessarily because of Rudy Go-Ber. but because of his defense, he's amazing as a rim protector, but they didn't have the personnel to defend on the wings. So they're better off trying to find different players that fill those spots because it's much more important to have multiple wing defenders than one amazing defender inside. So I go with that first. They keep Donovan Mitchell, but I think, look, it might even just be out of their control that because the jazz are where they are,
Starting point is 00:22:41 that Donovan thinks about going elsewhere. And that's not, you know, to be clear, anything coming from there. And I'm just connecting the dots and knowing how today's NBA works. So there might come a point where they reluctantly just have to part ways with him because he's going to leave anyway.
Starting point is 00:22:58 But I think in the short term, it's about seeing what you can get from Rudy Goldberg so that there's more of a supporting cast around Donovan and maybe that assuages his frustrations of where the jazz have been in the playoffs these last few years. All right. I like Celtics. Let's circle back. I like Celtics by about six to eight tonight.
Starting point is 00:23:18 Your thoughts? Look, flip of a coin here. I'm only going for the Warriors because I think that they're going to carry things over defensively, the home court. I think they're experienced to be able to handle the rowdy Celtics fans. I think this is when Clay bounces back. But I could also see the alternative. The reality is after tonight's, game. There's not going to be any winning streaks. I think the Warriors can win two in a row
Starting point is 00:23:42 starting tonight, but after that, it's one game off, one game on, up to game seven. So I pick in the Warriors, but not enough to actually put money on it. Mark Medina, do you have one of them Twitter accounts? Yeah, Mark G underscore Medina. Okay. Well, you know, I think most guys, what you're making fun. You know, a lot of famous people don't. Bob Costas doesn't have a Twitter account. Well, that's Bob Costas. Well, he's all generation. I just want to make sure. Joy, I am, first of all, she's very unsettled with me because I'm going to start wearing vests.
Starting point is 00:24:12 She doesn't like it. You're not going to do that. That's no. That's a no. I forbid it. I mean, shout out to Ted Baker. What about this? You want this?
Starting point is 00:24:23 Ted Baker is great. Are you going to start wearing suits? Like you're going to wear three-piece suits with this? Because we can do that. Incumbered with that. That's too much. Right. But I just want an additional layer.
Starting point is 00:24:35 What I'd like is a sleep. sleeveless jacket of... Joy. Don't worry, America. I'm not letting this happen. Okay. All right.
Starting point is 00:24:47 Me and Ann are on the watch. Okay. It's great seeing you. Likewise. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHard radio app.

Starting point is 00:27:44 and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
Starting point is 00:27:58 And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Starting point is 00:28:15 Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free, our heart radio app.
Starting point is 00:28:31 Search learn the hard way and listen now. Sunday, get ready for a USFL doubleheaders, starting with the bandits and breakers at 4 Eastern on Fox, then flip over to FS1 for Stars Mallors at 730 Eastern. USFL Football Sunday on Fox and FS1. I've run into a few games. I haven't bet it yet. I don't people that bet it.
Starting point is 00:28:54 It's on the board in Vegas. Almost everything's on the board in Vegas. Me wearing a vest by tomorrow's probably on the world. Where did you get this fashion inspiration? I watch a lot of television and I see people wearing vests on the TV, on shows. I watched The Offer last night, and a young Al Pacino was wearing a vest, and I thought, I'd look good in that. What era is this? Well, that was the 70s.
Starting point is 00:29:21 Right. And it was in Brooklyn. But I still think stuff carries over. People used to wear bell bottoms, and they wear them again. So I think the vest thing is coming back. I sense it. I have a good sense. You want to be ahead of it?
Starting point is 00:29:32 What is old as new again, I have a very good sense of timing with fashion. I think that's understood in this industry. Your look is funny. I just want to know what the wardrobe. You're my sister. The worship department downstairs is thinking, listening to this. You really are. You're a combination of my wife and my sister.
Starting point is 00:29:48 You scold me. You do appreciate me. You tolerate me. And you will not let me. I will not let you do this. I have to protect you from yourself. You're not the only person that needs to. that joy with the news.
Starting point is 00:30:03 No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So the ongoing Deshaun Watson situation started in March of 2021, and now there are still new cases coming out. Two new lawsuits have been reported within the last couple weeks. The 24th lawsuit against him contends that Watson has sought out random strangers on Instagram for massages more than 100 times. There is a report that came out yesterday by Jenny Vrentas of the New York Times. that Watson arranged massages with at least 66 different women over a 17-month period.
Starting point is 00:30:38 So the first number you gave me, is that just DMing a pretty girl and say, hey, could you give me a massage? Or is he going and seeking professional massage therapists? From what I understand it is a combination of both. Oh, Lord. The numbers, of course, are what is always... A tell. Pushed me towards my opinion on the situation. as someone who gets massages, you generally have one masseuse.
Starting point is 00:31:08 As we know, professional athletes have to take care of their bodies. And are very particular on who deals with their bodies. They're like weirdly loyal to a coach or trainer. As they should be, because if you get someone who doesn't know what they're doing, they can quite literally manipulate your body so that you get injured. This is an actual part of normal routine for athletes. That's why they have masseuses on staff, massage rooms at the facility, and provide massage therapists, professional massage therapists, from the team.
Starting point is 00:31:50 So there's no need to seek out any additional massage therapist. Now, some players do because they don't like the massages there or there is a masseuse that Brady had his own trainer. You have a particular specialty. You have your own trainer. But you don't need 66 of them over a 17th month period. It's remarkable to watch some men defend him and say it's no big deal.
Starting point is 00:32:12 It's not illegal. He's the face of an NFL franchise guaranteed $234 million. And he has apparently lied to Cleveland and the NFL. Stop talking. It's a big deal. This is a terrible situation for everybody involved. I mean, it's a bunch of, it's a bunch of, it's a bunch of meatheads who are, you know, just looking at the, you know, the key,
Starting point is 00:32:32 side of it, what, you know, his lawyer came out and said with the happy endings. Like, this is not a movie. This is not a joke. This is not something that your, your buddy did in Vegas one time. This is a real thing. Also, prostitution is illegal in most parts of the country. So it is actually illegal to do that. That is illegal to do that. Now, whatever your personal moral opinion about it and and I probably agree with you it doesn't matter that's not the point and what the cases are about is not about prostitution it's about sexual harassment it's about being made having someone force themselves on you that's what this is about so whatever your opinion about happy endings is irrelevant it doesn't matter what your opinion about it is that's what these
Starting point is 00:33:18 civil cases are about and now this 24th case could be even more problematic because as we learned yesterday, if they have criminal charges they can bring forward, then forget what happened with the 22 cases prior to that. They can go back to court and possibly bring a criminal charge if that is a part of this particular case. Watson posted an Instagram story of some lyrics in response to the recent developments for our radio audience and said, see, the blogs can't break me down. See, I'm the voice. I don't reply, but the rumors y'all don't heard, I'm a humbly deny. from, yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:54 I'd probably stay off social media. I would stay off social media around this time. And it's also not blogs. It's the New York Times and a NFL investigation and 24 civil lawsuits. So we've moved past the blogs and rumors at this point. Again, I don't, I cannot believe we're still having this conversation when the NFL does not have the burden of responsibility that courts have in order to suspend someone. They can shut them down for the year right now. This is just going to continue to be a story.
Starting point is 00:34:21 And quite frankly, it's done nothing but get worse. every single day. So I don't know how they let it continue, but we'll see what happens. I don't know what more of the investigation needs to be done, but every day it goes on, it gets worse. So there's been a lot of mysteries surrounding the Patriots' offensive plans this season,
Starting point is 00:34:40 and Bill Belichick didn't provide much clarity when he was asked about what they will do going forward. We've had a lot of changes offensive in the last couple of years. It's a good time to streamline things. We did that defensively. a couple of years ago and I feel like this is a good time to do it offensively. So, yeah, this is an element of that every year.
Starting point is 00:35:03 The streamlining process that you're going through, is it a new system on offense? I don't know. How big are the changes that you're making? I don't know. Make changes every year. I can't. I wouldn't be able to rank them.
Starting point is 00:35:21 I think his grumpiness was more endearing when they were great. Now he's just a grumpy old average coach, right? there are 500 teams, 9 and 8? You know, I don't know that I want to see Bill Belichick go out like that. I don't think I ever thought he would go out like this, but if Matt Patricia is your offensive coordinator, they're reportedly having him call offensive plays this season. Remember, as good a defensive coach as he is,
Starting point is 00:35:45 he let his best corner go. They couldn't force Josh Allen to punt once in the last two games, and Miami has gotten not better, significantly more talented on offense, and Miami beat him twice last year. I mean, they're an injury. Seriously, if they don't have a lot to work with, if Hunter Henry got hurt a tied end,
Starting point is 00:36:09 boy, they are just, because he ended up being of the two, Jono Smith and Hunter Henry, he was the one tied in that was kind of productive. They just don't have much. There's not much there. It is a bad skill group. They have a couple running backs I like, don't. love. You can't win in this league in 2022 with 12 play drives. Well, it just, it doesn't feel like they have any identity. Not offensively. Not at all. But you would think at least with a Bill Belichick
Starting point is 00:36:35 led team that they'd be like, okay, like maybe we don't, we aren't where we need to be offensively. You know, we lost the greatest player of all time. We're still kind of trying to tweak things and figure that out. But we are solid defensively. Like we are going to be a handful for anyone defensively. Like they don't feel like they have an identity at all. Like, what are the Patriots? Like tax accountants are always looking for loopholes, right? Because tax laws change. Right.
Starting point is 00:37:00 So a good accountant is always looking for loopholes, state, federal, whatever. The NFL has changed the rules and everything now is for the offense. Tell me a less talented offensive unit in the league. They have led the NFL for back-to-back years and are 17 and 16. In their own division, they are easily, including the Jets, I think today, the least talented offensive team. I don't care how good your coaching is. I don't care how good Pete Carroll is. He couldn't win with Russell Wilson with a Jurassic offense. Like Zimmer fired. I mean, like good defensive coaches struggling because it's an offense. Zach Taylor's getting
Starting point is 00:37:41 to a Super Bowl. But I wouldn't care that Bill Belichick was a defensive coach if I felt like they had a really strong offensive identity or they were building something. But like does not even have an answer and now all of a sudden Matt Patricia is calling offensive plays. They don't have a number one receiver. I don't know. I just have a lot of questions about them and I would hate to see it spiral because I think Bill Belichick had such a great legacy. But I mean, and then on the flip side of it, Tom Brady is immediately winning. Right, right, right. And being productive. So it just, it's not a good contrast when you're looking at how the legacies are playing out. So Aaron Rogers isn't sure how many more years he will play in the NFL, but he does know that he wants to finish his career in Green Bay.
Starting point is 00:38:30 That relationship changed, for sure. I mean, it really did. I saw some really positive things with everybody involved. It wasn't like this, you know, in a relationship and your partner's telling you that you're the cause of all the problems. That wasn't what I was doing. there was a lot of issues and potential solutions. And I'm very proud to be a part of the solution. And those three especially were a big part of the solution as well. So do you think you'll finish your career here? Yes, definitely.
Starting point is 00:39:00 He's incredibly comfortable. You know when you have a big decision and you're weighing it? And there's a lot of anxiety. And then you make the decision in your head. And suddenly you're very comfortable. Aaron is totally comfortable talking about shutting it down after a year. If he wins big this year, you can tell. He is totally comfortable.
Starting point is 00:39:20 I think Aaron's made a decision. First of all, he's telling you, I'm not playing longer than three years, probably. He already brought up one year and two years. So I think Aaron's made decisions like, if this is a really good year, I think I may shut it down. If it's bad, I'll probably come back. But what you're watching is at the end of a, and this is rare, he still has four good years to play maybe five, and he's probably going to shut it down. He's just got other interests. He's not driven by football.
Starting point is 00:39:47 His life is music and friends and social and travel and he's just a different cat. He likes investing. He likes real estate. I mean, I'm just, you know, I follow enough of him. He just likes a lot of different things. And that's okay to those kind of person. Not everybody's Peyton Manning. No, not everybody's Tom Brady.
Starting point is 00:40:06 That's why they're in different categories. And he's an all-time talent. He's a Hall of Famer. He has his ring. He has his MVP's. He really doesn't have much more. more to prove. I thought he would win more championships, but also when you look at how Green Ray does business and how they're structured, actually we probably shouldn't expect that.
Starting point is 00:40:25 Yeah. They got one at a time. That's how it goes with their, with their quarterbacks. That's their very conservative organization, always good, not rarely great. And, you know, if you look at how he plays in the postseason, that's kind of a reflection of that. I don't think it takes anything away from him. And at this point in his career, I don't know that I expect anything else. Every player has a different identity and a different legacy and are driven by different things. It's not that I don't think Aaron Rogers is competitive. Just to your point, I think he's a complex person. And maybe there are also now some extra things that go along with playing football that
Starting point is 00:41:03 he doesn't really enjoy and wants to just go enjoy his life. Also, football is a grime. You do it for you know, 16 years after a while. If you have other interests, it's like, okay, this is a lot in my body. This is a lot to deal with the meeting. Yes. So he signed a four-year extension this offseason with the Packers. He set to earn $42 million in 2022, 59.5 and 23 and 49.3 and 24, which got him to the $150 million mark. Two years are fully guaranteed.
Starting point is 00:41:30 So that's part probably around where it gets interesting. So after three years, he could retire at 41. and the Packers, or the Packers could look to rework the deal. So the structure of the contract makes it kind of a year-to-year deal to call for him to continue playing. So if he retires, the team decides to move off of him after the 23 season, they would be hit with $68.2 million in dead money in 2024. But, you know, that's the deal you make to keep Aaron Rogers. By the way, Joy, a couple of my NFL contacts are pro vests.
Starting point is 00:42:01 They like the idea of me. Again, what type of vests are we talking about? I was talking about like the puffy vest. I had a puffy vest on last night. It was good. I was able to even move my arms. Not like Aaron Rogers. Like a ski vest.
Starting point is 00:42:12 Not unlike Aaron. I do not want to commit to a singular vest or a singular moment. But my NFL sources are I'm getting a lot of this. A lot of thumbs up on the best. You guys are going to have to get comfortable with a new Colin. He is coming around the band. Yeah, okay. Joy with the news.
Starting point is 00:42:32 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The HARD Lye News. The CFOs that get it? Get it. The CFOs that don't, don't. One of a kind financing, go to netseed.com slash herd, H-E-R-D.

Starting point is 00:45:00 Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:45:23 To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed cracks. starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really?
Starting point is 00:45:46 Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. Starting point is 00:46:41 I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. All right. Two NFL stories.
Starting point is 00:46:59 I'll try to get to both. Number one, Steve. Evie Young, Hall of Famer, former Niner Great, is now, quote, mentoring Trey Lance, the young quarterback for the 49ers. Was Len Dawson brought in to mentor Patrick Mahomes or Dan Fouch to mentor Justin Herbert or Jim Kelly brought in to mentor Josh Allen? Can we just let the kid play? He's been there for over a year. OTAs, practice, games. Kyle Shanan's already great with quarterback.
Starting point is 00:47:32 I mean, Jimmy Garapolo, who none of you seem to like, got traded to the Niners in mid-season in 2017. Three weeks later, he started. And that offense is not easy. And you don't even like Garapolo. Lance has been there 405 days, and they're now. Kyle Shanan's like, I've got to bring in somebody else. There's a difference between support and life support. I'm getting to a point, like, I'm concerned that they're bringing in Steve Young.
Starting point is 00:48:02 We've had multiple former Niners, Montana, Steve Young, he's not ready. I've got a report I was to. Listen, Joe Flacco came from a small college like Trey Lance. First year he started, first game, got to the AFC championship. And you didn't like Flacco either. These are guys you don't like. So this is concerning. There's a bubble wrap quality here that I just let him play, figure it out.
Starting point is 00:48:31 I'm hearing way too much. I mean, Justin Fields, not a peep. Played, struggled, had a couple good moments. They're not bringing in Jim McMahon figure out Jay Cutler. It's like they're just giving him practice, getting in reps, at OTAs, trying to get better. I'm hearing too much about Trey Lance and people trying to help Trey Lance. All right, I have time for my second story. The Seahawks wide receiver, D.K. Metcalfe is not at minicamp.
Starting point is 00:48:59 It's an unexcused absence. Here's the story behind the story. his numbers are going to plummet and he wants to get paid early. He knows his numbers are going to plummet and the Seahawks do and the Seahawks are not going to pay him. Because Drew Locke isn't Russell Wilson and those numbers are coming down and he wants to get paid early. And the Seahawks for three reasons have leverage here. Number one, losing a little more is not the worst thing in the world this year for Seattle. They want the top quarterback next year's draft.
Starting point is 00:49:31 Number two is Seattle, because of the Russell Wilson trade, is loaded the next two drafts with first and second round picks. They got nine picks total next year. And number three, college football gives us, what, 25 college receivers that play a year, some excellent day one. And they've already got a couple decent receivers. So I also believe we are in a wide receiver bubble. the Tyreek Hill trade, I believe you'll look at it and go, you can't give a team five draft picks. So I think we're in, we have tech bubbles, housing bubbles. I think we're in a wide receiver bubble.
Starting point is 00:50:13 I think they're valuable. They're not that valuable. Even Tyreek Hill is not five picks valuable. So now is not the time for two things in America to have a gas guzzling truck with gas prices. Now is not the time. Buy Tesla or whatever you want by. The second thing, it's not a time to be paying wide receivers huge money. Unless you have a star quarterback and you can elevate them.
Starting point is 00:50:40 I think Seattle has the leverage here. This is a moment I would not give an early extension. Hour three. Next, it's the herd. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends, me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.

Starting point is 00:51:26 It's the enhanced. games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential.
