Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Yep, that's me, Clivert Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfills of conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to The Clifford show on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:04 And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok. On the Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 is big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild. I mean, it was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days I'd put on 10 pounds, I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard Podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:02:29 Sports Radio. Here we go. Hour number two on a Tuesday, live in Los Angeles. It's the hurt. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening. Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1. I got a haircut today. I'm not sure if I like it.
Starting point is 00:02:50 Sorry, radio audience. Joy Taylor, who's got a different hair style every day. I really like today's. Today's is I care, but not enough that you get an opinion of what I think. It's a very... It's a little... It's a little 80s. I like it.
Starting point is 00:03:05 You know, I can do like a jean jacket with some pins on it. So what do they call those shoulders? Oh, the shoulder pads, yeah. No, it's not. That's all, yeah. That's fine. I'm working with it. All right.
Starting point is 00:03:18 Our shows are work in progress. There's a lot of things happening. There's a lot of... People are being released. People are being signed. Yeah, so Joy is going to be breaking these stories. Jalen Smith was just released by the Packers. He was the Cowboy.
Starting point is 00:03:29 They let him go. Packer said, no, thanks. Yes. And, uh, yeah. There's some other things happening, so we'll keep you updated. All right. It's called the Herd Hierarchy. I do it every Tuesday, and here we go.
Starting point is 00:03:43 Heard Hierarchy. Time is now. Let's go. The top 10 NFL teams, according to college. Number 10. Well, the Raiders are 8, 9, or 10. I put them at 10 because they have an interim head coach. And the two teams I put right above them have like legendary coaches.
Starting point is 00:03:59 Listen, Derek Carr and this offense is averaging two yards more. per play without Gruden and also averaging 11 more points per game without Gruden. I don't know what to make of that. I have no idea what to make of it. Gus Bradley's done a good job. They are a top 10 team in this league. Derek Carr has been undervalued for his entire career. They are somewhere in the top 10 and I put them 10.
Starting point is 00:04:24 Number nine. They beat the Ravens, but the Ravens have a Hall of Fame coach and the Raiders have a interim coach. and Lamar Jackson's averaging 346 yards a game rushing and passing. That leads the NFL. I do worry about their secondary. It's a little bit of a mess. If they don't get a pass rush, Joe Burrell picked it apart.
Starting point is 00:04:44 So that's an issue. They are a flawed team. But to me, the Raiders, Ravens, if they play today, it's a one, two-point spread. I just think I get a Hall of Fame coach over an interim coach, and that means something. Number eight. You know, again, right there with the Raiders. the Patriots are not as dynamic as the Raiders are offensively, but back-to-back wins. They've scored 25 plus points in four straight games.
Starting point is 00:05:10 And let's be honest about this. They do a lot of things well. They got one of the best kickers, the best coach, the best offensive coordinator, arguably, excellent O line, solid running game. They don't turn the ball over. You don't get a lot of penalties. Now, they don't, they're not very dynamic offensively, but they can win the time of possession battle and they're out of the big mistake.
Starting point is 00:05:31 offense, which Mac Jones' first five, six weeks, he's a rookie. He's now completing 68% of his throws. When I watched him the last two weeks, my takeaway is that is a playoff team. Not a great playoff team, not a Super Bowl winning team, but they have become a playoff team. Number seven. I've got to give respect to the Titans. I know they lost Eric Henry. He's going to be back at some point.
Starting point is 00:05:54 Maybe the playoffs, but he's going to be back. I got to tell you something. I like Vrable. I like their culture. I like their toughness. You know, there's something to be said. If you got a tough guy coaching you, you're a tough team. Tomlin's a tough guy.
Starting point is 00:06:07 Pittsburgh's tough. Vrable's a tough guy. If all these coaches got into a sumo wrestling, Vrable and Tomlin would be the last two guys. I like their culture. I like their toughness. They got wins over the bills, the chiefs, the Colts. Only three of their remaining opponents have a winning record.
Starting point is 00:06:25 And I think they're going to be okay without Derek Henry. I don't think they're going to be as good, but I just kind of trust their culture. I trust their coach. I trust their offensive line. And you know what? Tanehill's good enough to scrap around here for the next six weeks until King Henry comes back. Number six. Buffalo outplayed Tennessee lost, but they outgained them.
Starting point is 00:06:49 Outtime of possess them. Buffalo's really good. I probably have them low. Number one offense, number one defense. Their pass rush is great. Their offense, you know, listen, they stalled. for two and a half quarters against, three quarters against Miami. They couldn't, they was three to three at home.
Starting point is 00:07:05 So their offense goes into these dead spots. Cole Beasley's now banged up. But seven straight went over Miami. They give you the explosiveness of a great team and the pass rush of a great team. Almost every great team in league history, their quarterback's comfortable and yours isn't. And nobody makes your quarterback less,
Starting point is 00:07:30 comfortable this year than Buffalo. Number five. Listen, Tampa lost to the Saints. That's Tom Brady's kryptonite. He's 0 and 3 against the Saints in the regular season. They're all banged up. So Gronk hasn't been around. A.B. hasn't been around.
Starting point is 00:07:44 Their secondary is all banged up. This was the first time in a month. They didn't look fantastic. They're still, they've got notable players coming back. Do you really think this morning that derails them? Do you think significantly less than them? I don't. I just think sometimes there are matchups. Also, let's give the Saints credit. The Saints defense has given Brady the only team in the league that has consistently given Brady problems the last two years. Even in their playoff win, he wasn't great. So the Saints have him dialed up. It's a great coaching staff and Tom met his kryptonite.
Starting point is 00:08:19 Number four. Rams. Vaughn Miller will only make them better. They're averaging and this is a big, you know I love this stat. 6.5 yards of play. That is a big Vegas stat. When you're averaging six and a half a play, that's Arizona and the Rams, you can score on any play. Their defense also leads the NFL in sacks. Now they just added Vaughn Miller. So what they're telling you basically,
Starting point is 00:08:44 they're like Buffalo. We're going to make your quarterback really uncomfortable and we can score at any moment. That's why Buffalo Rams to me, I could certainly be argued into that's your Super Bowl. big play offense and your quarterback's running for his life. That is a good recipe to play the final game of the NFL season. Number three.
Starting point is 00:09:06 But Arizona did beat him in L.A., so I've got to put Arizona ahead of them. I don't look at it too much as a negative losing the Green Bay. They literally drove 94 yards down the field and had a chance to win the game. And if DeAndre Hopkins was in the game, they probably would have won it. So I don't think less of them. Kyler Marie's a little banged up, so I'm not going to keep them at one or two. because right now this morning, Kyler's playing at less than 100 percent,
Starting point is 00:09:29 so I can't put him at 1 and 2, Arizona 3. Number 2. The fact that Dallas went on the road with Cooper Rush and was that explosive and that good in critical situations blew me away. Their offense is number one rated in the NFL, 455 yards a game. I mean, folks, Michael Gallup is not playing.
Starting point is 00:09:50 DeMarcus Lawrence isn't playing. What I like about Dallas, every unit, every single unit, has a playmaker. the secondary Trayvon Diggs, Micah Parsons linebacker, Randy Gregory up front, Zeke in the backfield,
Starting point is 00:10:04 Amari and C.D. Lamb. Every unit, their tight ends have emerged this year. Every unit has a playmaker. That also, to me, has a Super Bowl Sunday feel to it. Number one. I got to give up to Green Bay. That was the most impressed I've been with Green Bay since our Super Bowl year. Missing 11 starters, your defensive coordinator,
Starting point is 00:10:24 go on the road. and physically run the ball, push it right down Arizona's throat. Just take out the opening week. Just get rid of it. They've won seven straight. They're not turning it over. Very few penalties. They run the football.
Starting point is 00:10:39 They can win without Devante Adams. Sometimes I'm more impressed with teams. What you do when things aren't perfect, that had blowout written all over it. On the road against the dynamic offense, and they totally control the game. know it came down to one play, I thought they totally controlled it. By the way, Matt Lafleur is 33 and 7, 33 and 7 since he arrived in Green Bay. And Aaron's numbers are through the roof. So Aaron found his guy.
Starting point is 00:11:13 You know what I mean? Stafford found his guy. Kyler's got his guy. Aaron found his guy. You play your entire career hoping to find that coach that completes you, gets you, hears you. Aaron found his guy, 33 and 7 with LaFleur. There it is. Jonathan Vilma, by the way, had the Eagles Lions last week, and this is interesting. I'm going to bring Jonathan on because I have a question about this on the trading deadline. He joins us live now, Fox Sports analysts. NFL 10 years, three Pro Bowls, a Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:11:46 Philadelphia is interesting. So they're not terrible, but they're probably not going to be a playoff team. But they got a shot, right? So they go and they look great against Detroit, and they've got a Fletcher Cox there sitting around. They could move, get some draft picks, maybe give it to a great team. The Rams got Vaughn Miller. Maybe somebody in the NFC is like, ooh, so if you're the Eagles on the trade deadline, you just did their game.
Starting point is 00:12:12 Could they be a playoff team or should they be sellers today, Jonathan? Wow, great question, Colin. The Eagles can be a playoff team, can not cannot, can be a playoff team. They have all the makings to be a playoff team. They just have to do it consistently. You just talked about Fletcher Cox. You have Josh Sweat over there, Javon Hargrave leading all defensive tackles and sacks. So you have a formidable front floor.
Starting point is 00:12:41 Now you can run the football. They ran it up and down Detroit playing field, ran it down their throat, did whatever they wanted. So if you have a good front floor, you have a running game, you have a quarterback that doesn't turn the ball over in Jalen Hertz. He protects the ball pretty well as long as you're not forcing him to do too much. You have the makings of a good team. So if I'm the Philadelphia Eagles, I look at the formula, I look at the recipe for success. Run the football. Get the ball out of Jalen Hertz's hands where he's not making a play 80% of the time.
Starting point is 00:13:13 Use that front four. Blitz. Blitz. Blitz some more. sleeping blitz, when you're hungry blitz, when you wake up blitz, just do the things you need to do to be aggressive defensively, and you can find yourself putting together four or five wins and getting the playoff plan. You know, I said this. Trading deadline is funny. Like the Rams are basically saying, listen, we have to face, I mean, this is the way I look at the Rams.
Starting point is 00:13:40 They're like, okay, we're going to have to face Brady, Aaron Rogers, and Kyler Murray in the playoffs. That's our obstacles. we got to have a great pass rush. Our pass rush is good. We got to make it better. To me, that's what the Rams said. It's like, we see our obstacle. And then if we get to the Super Bowl, we can face it Josh Allen.
Starting point is 00:13:58 They have a great pass rush. Is there a team right now you look at a good team? Jonathan, you say, boy, if they just... Like, I look at the Patriots and I'm like, Deshaun Jackson? You know, they don't have an over-the-top offense. But New England's doing a lot of stuff well. but they don't have somebody that can take the lid off. And I'm like, Deshaun's still one of the 10 fastest receivers in the game.
Starting point is 00:14:23 Is there a team you see today that you'd like to see Go Be Aggressive, a good team? Oh, I don't know how you missed it, Colin. It would be the Saints. We're talking about the team that just beat the Bucks. I know the Bucks were depleted, but the defense has been outstanding for the Saints against Tom Brady. Frankly, been outstanding. And you've got to give a lot of credit to Dennis Allen, defensive coordinator on what he's done. He should have for a head coaching job sooner than later.
Starting point is 00:14:48 I'm not sure why he's not getting more buzz. But if you take Deshaun Jackson, you put him in there, and I don't care who the quarterback is. You get Mike Thomas back, Deshawn Jackson on the other side. Sean Payton will figure it out. He can put Joe Blow, the Schmo quarterback. He can put me back in pads and go play quarterback. I'll figure it out.
Starting point is 00:15:07 I don't know who to get it to. You got Alvin Camara, you got Mark Emmer back, and then you got two awesome playmakers. So on either side, I would definitely go. after Deshaun Jackson, if I were the Saints, blow the top off of each defense that you face for the next 10 weeks and then see what happens. By the way, we mentioned that on yesterday's show.
Starting point is 00:15:26 That was one of the ones we threw out there. We said Patriots or Saints. So I want to go to this. Joey and I had this talk yesterday. So the Jets are a little bit of a mess. They bring in Mike White and they win. And let's say they win this Thursday. They win again.
Starting point is 00:15:43 and players are loyal to the Ws. They're not loyal to the future and development. Don't do it, Colin. Don't do it. What do you do it? No, no, we're not doing this. Listen, Zach Wilson was the number two pick for a reason. He is a rookie, and he has been playing like a rookie.
Starting point is 00:16:05 Let him live. To be quite honest, and I was on here a couple weeks back, ranting and raving about how the guys, these rookies should all take breaks. They should all be sitting the bench right now. Sitting the bench doesn't mean we're just going to move on without you. So this is probably a good thing for Zach. If he doesn't play, let him just learn, let him just sit back, have a little clipboard and a little earpiece look like he's all into it and understand what it is to play quarterback in this league. Because you put him out there in the fire. He's having to learn on the run. And then of course, someone comes in.
Starting point is 00:16:40 They've seen what all the mistakes that he's made is like, well, I'm not doing. that, check, I'm not doing that, check, I'm not doing that, check. Right? So now he goes in, and of course he's going to make plays. He knows all the things not to do. So that's why he had such a performance. So you've got to allow these guys, Zach Wilson is who we're talking about right now, allow him to grow to mature. I don't even want to mention what you are about to bring up, Colin. We're not talking about it, bro. We're not. Okay, so Mahomes is a brilliant talent. But, you know, when you watch them over the
Starting point is 00:17:13 last month. All right, it's not the same team. Interceptions are up. I mean, last night he was lucky not to have another interception. Are you surprised at all considering their talent and coaching with their offense and their struggles right now? Honestly, I'm surprised that you said with their talent. When you look at Tyree Kill, Travis Kelsey Mahomes, where do you go after that? Where is all the talent that we are supposed to be talking about? There really isn't. And I, that's part of the issue. You go on the defensive side, it's the same thing. You have a couple players that are good, but you don't have a formidable defense.
Starting point is 00:17:53 Clearly, the stats are showing that. You don't have a formidable offense when you really think about it. You have a Michael Jordan quarterback in Patrick Mahomes. You have Travis Kelsey in his prime, Therick killing his prime. After that, you don't have much. That's why he's throwing these interceptions because he's forcing the issue. And defenses have caught up with the talent. They know how to defend Kelsey.
Starting point is 00:18:14 They know how to defend to re-kill. That's what's going on with Patrick Mahomes. All right. All right. So this week, who do you got this week? Falcon Saints. So Deshawn Jackson to the Saints. I like it.
Starting point is 00:18:26 You know something? You may want to go up. If this broadcasting thing, you get bored with it, you may want to go upstairs. You've got a pretty keen eye for this stuff, John. Great. No, I'll never get bored of this. This is way better. Less pressure.
Starting point is 00:18:37 And easy. Yeah, easier. Absolutely. Great seeing you, Jonathan. You too, Colin. Take care. Yeah. So is it the Colts and the Jets?
Starting point is 00:18:44 Day? Yes. Yes. I'm just saying, what if Mike White throws for 400 yards. I mean, I think it will be a conversation in New York. I think it will be a conversation amongst fans because they want to win. Yeah, fans are loyal to the Ws. Right, but that's not, that's not the plan. All right. What do I know? You know, I was watching last night. I was watching Patrick Holmes. and it really hit me that sometimes I think we misinterpret what we want from our quarterbacks. And we kind of fall for the same thing. We fall for the same thing. And I'm going to talk about that coming up.

Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English.
Starting point is 00:21:25 Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because. of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:21:47 We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch.
Starting point is 00:22:38 Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.

Open your free, our heart radio app, Search learn the hard way and listen now. Sunday night, the Astros came back from a four-run deficit to force a game six and now head back to Houston, looking to extend the series again,
Starting point is 00:23:17 while the Braves just need one more win to clinch the title. Game six of the World Series is tonight at 730 Eastern only on Fox and the Fox Sports app. You know, I was thinking about this with Patrick Mahomes. Last night, he went two for 13 on passes of more than 10 yards downfield. So I've been watching the NFL since 1972. I was a little kid. It was a black and white TV. I was in my room in Grayland, Washington,
Starting point is 00:23:42 and I watched the Miami Dolphins and the Washington football team with coached by George Allen. I can name all the players, honestly. I can remember the entire Washington football team roster. They were my favorite team. And since then, I've been really a huge football fan, right? And many of you have watched it for a long time. But in my lifetime, and this will take about seven, eight minutes. in my lifetime, there are quarterback styles that get discussed more.
Starting point is 00:24:07 So the first quarterback that was just different, you could look him up named Fran Tarkington. Like Russell Wilson, he was small, he was from Georgia, and he ran around. And it was crazy. He'd run in circles. He'd run all over the place. And he got talked about, I mean, back then you didn't have cable. You didn't have talk radio. But he was a fascinating player.
Starting point is 00:24:27 And Fran Tarkin, who was excellent and never won a Super Bowl. The next quarterback that the media, you just fawned over was Dan Marino. Probably the best pure-armed talent of my life. There's video out there, him throwing it behind his back. He did things like Mahomes that were just crazy town. He never won a Super Bowl. He got to one.
Starting point is 00:24:50 Then the Packers had the next two. Farv and Aaron Rogers. Both won one Super Bowl. Farve became an American icon. The Gunslinger, even though he was an interception machine, We just loved his guts and his weird decisions and taking unnecessary risk. And then there's Aaron Rogers, who next to Marino probably has the best arm talent I've ever seen in my life. And all those guys together have four Super Bowls.
Starting point is 00:25:20 And yet Bart Starr and Tom Brady and Joe Montana strictly pocket quarterbacks have 16, four times as much. All of them talented, but mostly disciplined, coachable, stay in the pocket, and rely on a great coach to build a system and they can distribute an engineer out of it. Lombardi, Bill Walsh, Belichick, Bart Starr had five championships, two Super Bowl, three or NFL championships, but that's what the league was, right? We know those games. You get 16 with those guys. Great coach, great system, disciplined, coachable, not asked to be run around like Fran Tarkington or have the arm town of Aaron or Farver Marino or like I think sometimes we fall in love
Starting point is 00:26:13 with things that really aren't crucial. Mahomes is a mega talent and he'll win another Super Bowl and he'll get it corrected. But Greg CoSell a couple weeks ago said this on the air and it's like sacral to say this and it's all true and now you're watching it. Patrick Mahomes will always put up yards, okay, and they score a lot of points and you can easily say that's all that matters. Let's leave it alone. But the goal of coaching and teaching is to get players to play the right way all the time. And there's no question that Patrick Mahomes, as talented as he is, had kind of lost his way a little bit in terms of playing with
Starting point is 00:26:55 the proper footwork, the proper balance, throwing the ball, with a firm base. You know, the things that you really need to do to play at a high level snap after snap after snap. So Marino and Aaron Rogers are the most, are the greatest arm talents in my life. They played 30 years. We got one Super Bowl. One.
Starting point is 00:27:20 The arm is not winning Super Bowls. It's not. In fact, there's an argument to be made. The greater the arm, the more rich. risks you will take. It's like I always said, it's almost biblical. If you have a great voice, you'll sing, you'll sing in the car, you'll sing in the shower, you'll sing it. If God gives you that gift, you'll use it. Arms, I could argue, get in the way. You think you can squeeze it in. You take unnecessary risks. When you have a good arm, Bart Star, Brady, Joe, Montana, a good arm.
Starting point is 00:27:53 Sometimes you just dirt it. Sometimes you just throw it out of bounds. Sometimes you go underneath. And so, and I understand falling in love with it, but there's a lot of things that make a great quarterback, maturity, Brady's discipline. I mean, you know, judgment, health. Brady practices how to go down and not get hurt. I mean, Eli Manning's got two Super Bowls. Dan Marino was there once. And it's not like Marino had a bad coach. He had the legendary Don Shula. but there were a lot of little things. Dan wasn't as coachable, perhaps, wasn't quite as discipline, had a great arm, made throws, he probably didn't have to. So it's not that I don't think Mahomes is great, but right now this second, Aaron Rogers
Starting point is 00:28:41 is playing a much higher level than Patrick Mahomes, and I don't think it's terribly close. So he'll get it back. He'll be fine. It's not a referendum against them. But my whole life, I've been watching the quarterback that runs and zigs and zags and wild an arm in. There's no proof that wins Super Bowls. There is no proof that the strongest arm and the flashiest game and the what. There is proof that a great coach, a great system, be coachable, be a good talent, not a superstar.
Starting point is 00:29:14 By the way, Brady drafted six round, Montana, I think, drafted third round. You know, also the chip on the shoulder can play a part. There's a lot more upstairs. And I'm not saying Mahomes won't get there, but there's a lot of things here that we don't give a lot of credit to because they're boring. Discipline's boring. Coachability is boring. Nobody wants to talk about that stuff. Arm, left-handed, sideways.
Starting point is 00:29:40 There's not a lot of highlights in the history of the Super Bowl of quarterbacks throwing with their other hand. Just a heads up on that. I can find a lot of highlights in the Super Bowl of Joe Montana sitting in the pocket, being patient, being patient, and throwing it underneath for 11 yards. key first down. I can find that all day. You find me the Super Bowl highlights of left-handed quarterback guy, sidearm pitcher guy. It's not a lot of those. There's a reason. That's not what wins. And I know this is going to be, oh, my God, your anti-Holmes is great. I pay him 400 million tomorrow. It's not that. But we do fall in love. We have a history of falling in love with a lot of stuff that doesn't win the big one. Joy with the news.
Starting point is 00:30:26 the herd line news. Well, that's always the struggle with extreme talent, especially if you're rewarded for it. Like, if you play a certain way at the highest level, and it does lead to wins, it's even harder to not rely on that. It's harder to, you know, play within parameters. And we know people who are talented at other things,
Starting point is 00:30:48 like acting and television, and it's like the huge talents, but you still have to hit the break. Well, Marlon. still have to get to the commercials. Marlon Brando is considered arguably the greatest actor of all time. He was also the most difficult. So dealing with all of his talent,
Starting point is 00:31:04 you had to deal with his persona and his stubbornness. And like, you know, I think your point is great is that the battle with talent is, I mean, Carmelo Anthony's talented. Well, no, it was the most coachable. But I would say it's mostly the extremely talented. Yeah. Like people who are talented but still have to kind of scrape and earn certain things. and overcome a lot of things.
Starting point is 00:31:27 They tend to understand, okay, there's a business side of this. There's a structure to this that's going to build, and not to say that there aren't extreme talents, obviously, that are extremely successful. We have examples of that as well. But you have to match the talent with the structure, and sometimes when you're rewarded for being an extreme talent,
Starting point is 00:31:45 it's harder to pull it back because you know what you're capable of. So Cardinals are in a wait-and-see mode with Kyler Murray. They said yesterday that, He is day-to-day with his ankle injury. Cliff Kingsbury also mentions that the ankle's feeling better. After having the weekend off, Jake Glazer reported on Sunday that Kyler could be out one to three weeks with the sprain. He was injured in Thursday's loss to the Packers. You could see him kind of limping off. If he can't play against the 49ers, then Colt McCoy would get the start. The Cardinals are currently favored by two and a half on FoxBed.
Starting point is 00:32:21 Obviously, this is not super dramatic news. it's not what you want to hear, but it's not a, you know, season-ending situation. And he could possibly still play. But, you know, if he is still in the state that he is right now, my guess is that they are easy with him because you don't want to force him out there similar to the DACC situation. And, you know, they're in a good situation right now, even though this is an important game, not similar to, you know, Dallas's game. You don't want to put him in a situation where he's injured for the rest of the season. Yeah. They're currently first in the NFC West right now at 7 and 1.
Starting point is 00:32:54 I think he's the rare. I think I'd rest him. Just because of how valuable. He's, yes. I mean, his style. Basically the same conversation we just had about DAC this week. Now, this is a divisional game, so it's a little bit different.
Starting point is 00:33:12 But you just, you don't want to put yourself in a situation where you force him out there. And he ends up making it worse. This is, you know, a day-to-day type of thing. You don't want it to become a week-to-week kind of thing when you are so reliance on his talent. Now their next couple games are, they're at the Niners, then they have the Panthers, and at the Seahawks. So not the easiest
Starting point is 00:33:34 and two divisional games, but Who did you say their backup? Who's the backup? Colt McCoy. Yeah, that's not the same level. I don't know. Col McCoy is not as good as Tyler. Yeah, that was quite a revelation for the audience. Well, I mean,
Starting point is 00:33:48 look, nobody thinks Cooper Rush is as good as Dak Prescott. No, that's a good point. He was able to pull it off. I don't. That's fair. We get crazy with the with the backups, your backup is not supposed to finish the season for you. Can they win a game? Can they win a game? Can they split games? Yeah. You're right. You're right. That's what you can ask for them. I can win a game with McCoy. Yeah. Not going to be a high scoring game, but I can win a game with it.
Starting point is 00:34:10 Well, everyone else is going to have to step up. This is the part of the season now. The last four stories that we've talked about in Herdline are all about injuries. This is part of the season now where everyone is going to have injuries, everyone's going to be banged up. What team is going to elevate in what moments to keep you, you know, in what they're not the playoff hunt, but, you know, keep you stable and don't put your stars in a situation where they're being forced out there unnecessarily. So the Steelers started
Starting point is 00:34:34 the season 1 and 3, but they have won their last three games and tight-in Pat Friermouth. Oh, he's good. Likes that teams are overlooking them. He said when people wrote us off, it kind of put a little chip on our shoulder and you know we're rolling right now. We've got to keep it going against the
Starting point is 00:34:50 Bears next week. He is really good. They got a good one in him. Steelers Bears on Monday night. Pittsburgh's currently favorite by six and a half. Oh, I like Pittsburgh. You'd like six and a half? Pittsburgh, we did this yesterday. I think it's so funny.
Starting point is 00:35:03 It is a home game. The 16 worst offenses in the NFL. One has a winning record, Pittsburgh. So I don't care what anybody says. Mike Tomlin gets credit for that. Yeah. Like it's time now. Yes.
Starting point is 00:35:19 Sean Payton gets all the credit for winning with Trevor Simeon. How in the hell they're winning games in Cleveland with their offense. I mean, it's if you can't, in 2021, if you can't score 20, you can't win games except Pittsburgh. They're third in the AFC North right now. Ratings are 5 and 2
Starting point is 00:35:37 and the Bengals are 5 and 3. Makes no sense. In 2021, it makes no sense. It doesn't, but they do have a good defense. Nogie Harris has been a nice pick. Nogie Harris is developing getting better every week. O-Line was good against Cleveland. It was the best O-Line performance of the year. I still think
Starting point is 00:35:53 they're limited, but they are well coached and they do have good pieces and good units. Chase Claypool and Johnson, the receiver. They do have, they always have good receivers. Deontay Johnson, they have over the top pieces. It's weird. You know what? Culture matters. It does. It's like New England. And winning these close games. Culture matters. Not winning a Super Bowl. But it's interesting. We don't, listen, I don't think it's the Steelers. The Steelers are clearly capable of, you know, sneaking in the playoffs. I don't think they're going to make any noise. But we don't really give them, and maybe it's because of the way that Ben has looked or looked at the beginning of the season,
Starting point is 00:36:29 that we don't, aesthetically, they're awful. We don't give them the, I guess the grace that we're giving New England or the saints to Mike Tomlin's point about Sean Payne and not being in the conversation for USC. But yeah, I think it's aesthetically, it's very clunky. I mean, that game against the Browns was not a, it was a hideous game. But it doesn't matter. You get the win and that's all that matters.
Starting point is 00:36:52 That's, that's how they keep score. So Zion Williamson has played. played in just 85 career games in three NBA seasons. And one of his former teammates, JJ Redick, is concerned about his health. He said, of course, I would be worried just in general about Zion, given his injury history. There's certainly a lot more at play here than whether he ends up leaving the pelicans in five or four years or whatever it is.
Starting point is 00:37:15 Zion has to be in better shape. That's not a secret. And he's got to get healthy. And JJ Redick was always an impeccable shape. So that's coming from somebody who is like a cardio monster. J.J. Reddick, I've known guys who have played with J.J. Ruddick, like he was, his fitness level was through the roof. No, I mean, look at, I would have taken Zion over John Morant. You had to. Nobody, you had to.
Starting point is 00:37:39 But I mean, it's starting to feel a little bit. Their games are different. It's starting to feel a little like Oliver Miller, who was a wildly talented center of the Phoenix Suns God. And Oliver couldn't control his weight. And, you know, and I think Zion's more naturally gifted. But Oliver Miller was a great, great, I think he played at Arkansas. He was a great college player, and it just didn't work. Well, however gifted Zion is, if he's not on the court, it doesn't matter. Redick played with him for two seasons with the Pelicans. He still hasn't, Zion Williamson still has not made his season debut.
Starting point is 00:38:10 He did have foot surgery over the summer, which, look, you have foot surgery. You know, James Harden talked about rehabbing over the summer. He didn't get to play and do his normal cardio workouts and, you know, play pickup. So he's not in the shape that he wants to be in. have a lower extremity surgery, you're not going to be able to do cardio the way that you normally do. And when you're a bigger guy, this is how it's going to look. But if you're also consistently not healthy, this is a concern. And at some point, it is on the player. You are the one who is doing the rehab. You are the one who is doing the eating. You are the one who is working
Starting point is 00:38:43 out and, you know, taking care of your body. But by the way, it's not fairies in New Orleans. Great food city. It's real easy in Cincinnati to drive home and not start off with Applebee's. Do you know that if there was a place that? Blue Crab manets here in L.A. I would eat there every day. No, I mean, literally in New Orleans, you're literally driving home and it's like, would you like these Rockefeller oysters? Would you like this bennie? No, I eat really, really well when I'm in New Orleans every time. It's a great food city, yes. That's nothing against Skyline Chili, I'm saying, but there's cities. If you go to England,
Starting point is 00:39:16 you land at the airport, I've done this, you drive to London, there's no fast food the whole time. So it's like, okay, I'm not going to eat much here. You go to Italy. and you can smell the bread. Yeah, but everything in Italy is like fresh. And then you walk 10 miles every day. So, you know, it's a little different. But again, he's an incredibly talented player who we all want to see become the star that we think he's capable of.
Starting point is 00:39:39 He's just got to get on the court. Yeah. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd lie news. And you know what's so good in New Orleans? The quality, like every waiter in L.A. is an actor. And in New York, the rent so.
Starting point is 00:39:54 expensive. They want you up and out. Want to turn the tables four times. You go to New Orleans. They don't worry about turning the tables. Oh, it's a fabulous hospitality. It's the best hospitality. Like you sit there. They take so much pride. You sit there. I'm like, I'll get up and let you turn the table. No, you're here all night. Oh my God, the hospitality. It's not fair. If you are struggling with your weight, you need to move. Because that city is there to eat. You fly in, you have lunch. You fly out. That city was made. The hospitality in New Orleans, best in the country. It is. Be sure to catch live edition. of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart
Starting point is 00:40:31 Radio app. Hey, what's up everybody? It's me, three-time Pro Bowl of LaVarrington, and I couldn't be more excited to announce a new podcast called Up On Game. What is Up on Game, you ask? Along with my fellow Pro Bowler, T.J. Hushman Zada and Super Bowl champion. Yep, that's right. Plexico Burris. You can only name a show with that type of talent on it. Up on Game. We're going to be sharing our real-life experiences loaded with teachable moments. Listen to Up On Game with me, LaVar Arington, T.J. Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English.
Starting point is 00:43:02 Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84's big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed cracks. I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Starting point is 00:43:31 Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it
Starting point is 00:44:12 and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:44:28 And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Starting point is 00:44:55 Mercedes-B-U-S-A-D-C-B-U-SA-N-Best or nothing. Speaking of food, years and years ago, I lived in Las Vegas, and I used to eat at this sub-place. And I remember the name of it. I remember the logo, and it was great. And then one time, they have bad roast beef. I'm not going to call it out,
Starting point is 00:45:11 and I was sick for four days. And I didn't have any money, and I was living on seven-up, and just throwing up, yacking it for like four days. my next five years there, I never went back, even though every experience was great. But my bad was so bad that I could never look at it the same. It didn't matter that 30 times I'd gone before. It was fantastic.
Starting point is 00:45:33 It was so bad. And in a weird way, this is what happens with reckless quarterbacks. Sam, Donald, and Carson Wentz. They're bad is so bad that everybody thinks they're terrible. Like, if you ask fans, is Carson Went any good? overwhelmingly on Twitter, 90% he's terrible. But if you live in Indianapolis, you're like, except the games against the Titans, he's been fantastic.
Starting point is 00:45:57 But he was so bad and this is the problem with reckless quarterbacks, is they divide staffs and they divide rooms. If you have a great quarterback, everybody's in. I mean, everybody's in on my homes. If you have a bad quarterback, we know who they are. Everybody's out. But Darnold in New York and Carolina, that's dividing people. Wentz in Indianapolis, that's the kind of guy that divides people.
Starting point is 00:46:20 Because his bad is so memorable. And one highlight can literally stick to your career. OBJ, the one-handed catch. I mean, OBJ hasn't done anything in three years. But you still think he's elite. He's no longer average. But the catch. Carson Wentz had a left-handed interception in the end zone this weekend that was so
Starting point is 00:46:42 god-awful that you just like, You can't win with that. And I can see teammates like, you can't. But Sam Donald had the number, was the number one rated quarterback on PFF this weekend. Number one rated, but you can't, you ask people, Donald's terrible. You can't be, you can't lack talent to be the number one pro football focus quarterback for a week. Every snap, they take every snap. And I, this is what I always worry about.
Starting point is 00:47:08 Jay Cutler had some of this. Jay Cutler, Carson Wentz, Donald. Their bad is so bad. it's like 20 years from now showing highlights bad. Remember when Dan Orlovsky ran out of the end zone? Like that sticks. But when you get to be Wence, if you look at Wence's stats this year when he doesn't play Tennessee, he's fantastic. He's a pro bowler.
Starting point is 00:47:31 Here they are right here. He's completing 67% of his throws, 11 TDs one pick and 110 passer rating against everybody else. Against the Titans, he's a backup. 52% completion percentage. 67 passer rating. Folks, it's hard to have that bad of a passer rating in two games. And I think that's the thing with Wentz. I think Indianapolis likes him.
Starting point is 00:47:56 But they can get out of his contract after last year. And between the injuries and his memorable bad plays, it sticks. That Titans pass could have just, to me, that was the season. that was the seat just get out of the end zone get to overtime you're going to win that football i thought indy had a better game plan i thought in i thought the colts controlled a lot of the game but when you have a reckless quarterback and his his bad is so memorable i can literally remember the logo the name the theme song to the sub place in vegas had 30 great subs there one i was sick for four days i can never go back i can't at that
Starting point is 00:48:38 the smell of it. I can't get near it. And I think Wendt is one of these players that will eventually sort of divide the room. Is that half the people will be like, I'm putting 70 hours a weekend. He's throwing the football left-handed out of the end zone. Every time we play the best team in our division, he's ridiculous. And I think the other half the room goes, find me better on the market. Kirk Cousins doesn't have half this talent. But Kirk doesn't have memorable mistakes.
Starting point is 00:49:06 he's just inefficient or he plays a little scared. Like when he has, he and Darnold, they honestly can be in the clutches of a 300 pound defensive lineman that can bench press Delaware. And they're like, I'm going to make the play of the year. I don't even care. I'm going to make a left-handed throw out of the end zone. And it's like, oh, God, no. Oh, no. And, but it is, there are two things.
Starting point is 00:49:35 I'm not sure you can ever coach up. Indifference, Ben Simmons, and reckless, wence. You'd be the greatest coach in the world. I don't know if you can coach that stuff. It is what it is. Wolf and Shepherd, athletic shoe in the bottom,
