Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On The Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me.
Starting point is 00:00:39 I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:00:57 Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard,
Starting point is 00:01:27 but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Starting point is 00:01:46 Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds, I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go. It's hour two live in Los Angeles. It's the herd wherever you may be, and however you may be listening. IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. How much fun was Nick Wright? Eddie Johnson's son's broadcaster.
Starting point is 00:02:50 He'll be joining us last hour. Peter Schreger around the corner in a couple of minutes. Joy Taylor, how are you? I'm doing great. Peter up. Yep. So during the football season every week, for about 20 weeks, we do the herd hierarchy. Yes. And then I do it three to four times in the off season.
Starting point is 00:03:08 I do it after free agency. Then I do it after free agency in the draft. Because I do think there's a lot of different ways to make your team better. A coaching change. Denver did that. A quarterback change. Denver did that. Draftwell, Denver did that.
Starting point is 00:03:20 That's why I said yesterday, I thought Denver will be the most improved team in the league. Coach, philosophy, quarterback. quarterback, weapons, D-Line upgrade, they hit it out of the park. So today, I'll give you my post-coaching hires, post-free agency, post-draft, because I do think teams got better. We had good playoff teams like Arizona and Philly trade for explosive wide receivers. So like the Raiders made the playoffs and they went and got Devante Adams and Chandler Jones. So we've seen teams that were good at special players.
Starting point is 00:03:55 So here we go. Here's our herd hierarchy post-free agency coaching moves and the draft. Here we go. Heard hierarchy. Time is now. Let's go. The top 10 NFL teams, according to college. Number 10.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Hardest spot was number 10. I could have put a lot of teams. I'll put San Francisco because of the teams I considered. I think they have the best coach and the best offensive system, and it's an offensive league. Can Tray Lance play? I think he can. They got Drake Jackson early in the drive.
Starting point is 00:04:25 draft another edge rusher, probably opposite of Bosa. They also got a top corner from Kansas City, and that was their weakness. So I look at this team, and they'll figure out Debo Samuel. I don't know exactly what they'll do at quarterback, and that's why the 10th spot was hard. But I do think Trey Lance can play. I think an offseason of OTAs, preseason and camps. I'm betting on the culture and the coach and the roster Niners at 10. Number nine.
Starting point is 00:04:55 This is an easy one for me, Arizona. I think I may have them low. Don't remember Arizona in the last several weeks. Look at what they've done in the last couple of years in September, October, and November. Then they added Hollywood Brown and the best tied in the draft. Also, don't take away their playoff loss because Kyler refused to run. They're not the same team without it. Every year, Kyler and Cliff Kingsbury have gotten better, and every year they've added weapons.
Starting point is 00:05:20 They have pivoted smartly to the right side of the ball three years ago as a franchise. love where they're going. I think they've re-signed the right guys, sign the right guys, and I don't worry about DeAndre Hopkins. He'll be fresh and ready to go by the end of the year. Number eight. I'm going to give the Raiders some love here. Listen, they went and got, they re-signed Max Crosby and brought in Chandler Jones.
Starting point is 00:05:43 So they have two elite rushers plus Devante Adams, and they've got a coach in Josh McDaniel, who's on the right side of the ball. I thought they had a solid draft. Listen, we know what's around this league right now. You've got to be able to score points. I got Derek Carr. I get Josh Jacobs. I get Darren Waller.
Starting point is 00:06:00 I get Hunter Renfro. I got Devonthe Adams. Folks, there's not much better than that in the league. That may be as good as, that's the best tight end, arguably, the best slot receiver and the top wide receiver on one team. So I love where the Raiders are at. I also think Chandler Jones sometimes gets forgotten. He's an elite pass rusher for years.
Starting point is 00:06:20 And now he teams with Max Crosby. Number seven. I'm going to go with the Chargers. They went and got the best corner on the market, J.C. Jackson. They brought in Khalil Mack opposite Bosa. Watch out. The Raiders and the Chargers to me is a coin flip. I think Justin Herbert's got a little higher ceiling as a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:06:38 They also went to the interior offensive line with Zion Johnson in the draft. The Chargers were the best team in the league that didn't make the playoffs, and they shored up the two areas their coach, a defensive coach wanted to. Get us a Jalen Ramsey. Get us a big time corner and let's improve our pass rush. I'll have the Chargers at 7. Number six. Cincinnati Bengals had one massive hole and did a great job to plug it up.
Starting point is 00:07:04 Offensive line. They got Lyle Collins, Alex Kappa, Ted Karras, and then they got Hayden Hurst at Tide End, who's a really nice player. So I like their defense. They had a playmaking defense with a pass rush. We all like Burrow. And we all thought last year they had elite weapons. now Burroughs going to get another second to throw the ball with all these young wide receivers.
Starting point is 00:07:27 Also, we don't know about the division. We don't know who's starting a quarterback for Pittsburgh or in the opening month, Cleveland. By the way, Baltimore just doesn't have the wide receivers now. They lost Hollywood Brown. I like Cincinnati at number six. Number five. I give Tampa the five spot just because of Tom Brady. He's been in these big games and the NFC is weaker.
Starting point is 00:07:48 So I think they're going to have, you know, more layup games. They also brought in Shaq Mason. Offensive line is fine. Russell Gage, the wide receiver. I mean, they have more wide receivers with experience than almost every team in the league. I do think this is their last run and this is Tom Brady's last year. But in that division, I mean, they'll probably go 6 in O in division. They'll be able to rest guys going to the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:08:12 Healthy Tampa at number five. Number four. Now it gets really, really, really, really close. I'm going to go Chiefs at four. I love that they added Juju Smith-Schuster, drafted Sky Moore, Ronald Jones at Running Back. I do think this has a chance to be one of the better defenses they've had.
Starting point is 00:08:30 Listen, it's a tough division. I don't think that hurts them, but it's the reality of where they're at. I think Kansas City's really good, but I do not think they're as good as the team right above them. Number three. That's the Rams who won the Super Bowl. They added Bobby Wagner to improve their weakness,
Starting point is 00:08:48 their linebackers and Alan Robinson is an upgrade over Robert Woods at the two receiver. Now, it is hard when you win a championship. Everybody, you know, has a second glass of Vito and Bazin-Christall, but it's a pretty low ego team in Los Angeles. Matt Stafford's contract extended. And the Rams are good where you have to be good. Receiver, Edge Rush, Aaron Donald, Corner, quarterback, head coach. So I got the Rams at three.
Starting point is 00:09:17 Number two. I think Denver's the most improved team in the league. I know you think I'm nuts. What they did to their defensive line between DJ Jones, Randy Gregory, and Nick Panito from Oklahoma, totally transformed their pass rush, which I thought needed a lot of work. Russell Wilson, they also drafted a tight end out of UCLA to replace Noah Fant. Listen, we saw Stafford go to the Rams Super Bowl. We saw Brady go to Tampa Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:09:45 This is not going to take long. They're going to be good opening weekend. By the way, Denver never loses at home in September when they have a legitimate quarterback. So you know they'll start well. I think Denver is loaded and inches better than the Rams. Number one. Bills. I thought they had a great draft. They had von Miller, O.J. Howard, Jameson Crowder.
Starting point is 00:10:05 Buffalo right now there's an argument to be made. They're as good a front office as the league has. I mean, they draft well, they develop well, they play well. They're 13 seconds from getting past Kansas City. I love their draft. I love their additions. They get smart guys. They get playmakers.
Starting point is 00:10:22 They went and got Vaughn Miller, Jameson Crowder, just guys that'll make plays in big games. Tight-in O.J. Howard. Buffalo. I said this. I thought they were the best team in the league most of last season. They just had some rough edges. I think they've refined them with another excellent draft and off-season.
Starting point is 00:10:40 Buffalo bills number one. See, you think I'm an L.A. guy. I put Buffalo over the Rams. You think I'm a West Coast guy. I took upstate New York as number one. Well, I mean, I love the moves that L.A. made this offseason, too. But you have to consider there's a little, you know, a little pullback.
Starting point is 00:10:58 A little bit. A little back. It takes the edge off a little bit. A little bit. Like, it's incredibly impressive if you can come back at the same exact energy level after winning a championship. With that, Peter Schragher is watching our nonsense. Cheat-sheet, Fox Sports app.
Starting point is 00:11:15 Good morning football. Would you make anything that jumped out at you? I know people think I'm nuts on the Niners, but I think Trey Lance can play. I don't know. You know, we'll see. I mean, we don't know that. No Steelers, no Ravens, no Browns.
Starting point is 00:11:29 I think all three of those teams will bounce back this year. So I'm going to stay quiet. Your hierarchy is your hierarchy. Gosh, the Broncos sure got a lot of love for not being good in a decade. But okay. Okay. So, hey, tell me, explain to me. I really thought Howie Roseman,
Starting point is 00:11:46 and the GM of Philly said, listen, Dallas lost production. Giants didn't pick up Daniel Jones contract. I thought they smelled blood. I thought they said, this is a go-for-it moment to get A.J. Brown, who's a great wide receiver. How did it play? Give me the backstory, because that is a rare draft day move to steal a top five receiver talent. Yeah, the Eagles had the 15th and the 19th pick in the draft. looked at the chessboard and they wanted one of those top wide receivers, but they realized there
Starting point is 00:12:20 was going to be no chance one of those top four, which was Garrett Wilson, Drake London, Jameson, Williams, and of course, Chris Olavay were going to slip toward them at 15. So they had to be aggressive. Now, when it seemed like that wasn't going to work out, they said, okay, let's get an even better wide receiver. A.J. Brown is 24 years old. He was the number one receiving option on the number one team in the AFC throughout the regular season last year, and they got him because they were willing to pay him. Tennessee was not. They also did that without giving up a first round pick. They also did that with Jordan Davis being a first round selection also. And then I give Howie credit because it's not like they just rest on their laurels. Cam Juergens is going to
Starting point is 00:12:58 take over for center from Jason Kelsey. They got him later on in day two. And then they also added Nicobi Dean, who there was questions about an injury, but in the third round, Nicopi Dean won every award as a linebacker at Georgia and might have been the alpha of all those alphas on that defense. So I think it was a home run for the Eagles. Now, you can question whether Jalen Hertz is going to be the quarterback in the future or not. Well, guess what? They still have two first round picks for next year's draft. So how we get to a lot of dragging in the Philly media market, but I think he played this chess board perfectly and took advantage of Tennessee not wanting to give A.J. Brown that huge long-term commitment. So Fox Bet did not change the Arizona Cardinals line with the DeAndre
Starting point is 00:13:39 Hopkins injury or PED violation. And my takeaway was, Ron Dale Moore, because Christian Kirk's gone. Those 54 catches become 70. He's an emerging star. Hollywood Brown, who played with Kyler in college. They had huge numbers at Oklahoma. And it's funny, you know, I look at that move and I'm like, man, they have, their depth chart on offense, Shreggs, is silly.
Starting point is 00:14:06 It's an all-star team. I looked at that D'Andre Hopkins story, and I'm like, is it a big deal? I mean, how's it viewed by you? I think it's a monster deal. But you know what? It's those first six games. So the Cardinals were 7 and O with Hopkins and Murray. And then Murray is dialed in, MVP talk,
Starting point is 00:14:27 and then Hopkins goes down and they kind of fall off a clip. I think Hopkins is huge. But I do tend to think they're going to be okay. When you add a Marquis Brown, who is all speed, when you add a Rondeel Moore, when you add a Trey McBride in the second round at a Colorado State who's going to play a key, roll on this offense and you bring back
Starting point is 00:14:45 Zach Ertz, you bring back James Connor, you bring back A.J. Green. The names keep going on and on and on. I would add this. Though I don't have it on a firm ground, I assume the Cardinals knew this suspension was going down. That wasn't just a bomb that was dropped on them yesterday. So they had to game plan around this. Kyler's connection
Starting point is 00:15:05 with Marquise Brown is very important here. They were not only college teammates, their best friends and still best friends, such good friends that this was done and the deal was done and Hollywood managed to be on a plane during the draft so that by the time the draft party occurred for the Cardinals, he was there in attendance. Kyler is probably in his best, best mind frame with the organization after that trade. But voluntary starts and with no Hopkins, probably no Kyler, probably no Colt McCoy. You're looking at, you know, I think that the quarterback, I think, is Trey McSorley.
Starting point is 00:15:40 Tramick Sorley, the old Penn State quarterback for our volunteers, which looks more like a USFL team than it does an NFL team when you're starting off with none of your stars on the field for voluntary workouts. Kenny Pickett to Pittsburgh, so it was a smokescreen because we kept hearing, oh, Mike Tomlin. It loves Malik Willis. Were you shocked at all that, I mean, it really was a referendum that the GMs outside of Pittsburgh and Pickett, they don't like any of these quarterbacks. They viewed them all as either not talented or prospects.
Starting point is 00:16:11 Did that surprise you? It didn't surprise you they went quarterback, but I'll put my hand up here. I did very well on my final mock draft. I feel really good about it, but I had a different quarterback. I had Willis going at 20. And the reason was there was nothing coming out of Pittsburgh that they had this fond feeling for Pickett. And mind you, they see Pickett every day. If you haven't been to the Pittsburgh facility, it's the Steelers right here and the Pittsburgh Panthers right here.
Starting point is 00:16:37 So Pickett was right under their nose for years. And I thought it was quite an indictment against Pickett that we hadn't heard from day one like, oh, the Steelers love Pickett. They see him every day. They see him compete. They see him work every day in practice. But they also see how he handles the staff there in the buildings. So the fact that there was no buzz around Pickett to the Steelers, and that came internally
Starting point is 00:16:58 from Pittsburgh. Usually you hear something. It made me think, okay, if they don't like Pickett and they're not high on Pickett, well, then I don't know who is going to be high on. pick it because they see the guy compete on a daily basis. Turns out they're just really good at keeping the cards close to their vest. This is really interesting because we had Mike Tomlin on in the draft day three for NFL network.
Starting point is 00:17:19 And I straight up asked him, I'm like, is there a chance he starts day one? And you're like, yeah, he'll compete. He'll compete not only with Trubisky, but with Mason Rudolph. So they went around the globe doing all the pro days. They were at Ritter's Pro Day. They were at Malik Willis's Pro Day. And the guy that they liked all along was right under their nose. And they kept it from us pretty well.
Starting point is 00:17:37 said yesterday the Jets had a draft that is about as good a draft as I can remember I think the first four guys are all starters three could be high-end starters you could even go to their top five because Rucker many saw him as the second best tight end it's just a that's about as good as you can do now they didn't have late pick so their hit rate's going to be much higher than typical draft I mean it I mean you're close to the franchise it felt like it just came together like some drafts the fall at the positions you need. That's what it looked like to me. Yeah, and look, sauce was their guy from February. I get the combine. I knew it was going to be sauce. That was their guy at four if he fell to them. Fortunately, Houston took another corner. They took Stingley at three. So
Starting point is 00:18:24 sauce gets there. And then they were hoping to get a wide receiver. Drake London goes at eight. Garrett Wilson, their throw with that. The real gem of this draft is at 26. Because I can tell you that Jermaine Johnson the second was not only one of the top players on their board, he was a top eight player on their board. And though I don't have it on confirmed status, he was in the same conversation as Tibado. So they liked both those guys as the top two pass rushers. So once he started slipping out of the top 10, top 12, top 13,
Starting point is 00:18:53 I could tell you Joe Douglas was on the phone, he was making calls, trying to trade back in to the top 20 to get Jermaine Johnson. It wasn't until 26 that they found a trade partner. and they got a guy who was a top eight player on their board. Now you go the next day. The Breece Hall pick is being overlooked in New York because they got these three first rounders. They were trying to get back in the first round to get Breece Hall.
Starting point is 00:19:15 So when there was rumors that Houston might want Breece Hall with the second pick of the day two, they moved up with the Giants and they get Breece Hall. Let's just look at it as four first rounders when they went into the day with just two picks. And I can tell you, they're very excited there, but they're also very modest with their expectations. They know what that AFC looks like.
Starting point is 00:19:33 They know that these are rookies, and they're going to have to temper expectations locally because all four of those guys may go on to be great players. You're still playing against the bills, still playing against the Dolphins. You're still playing against the Patriots. Good stuff. Peter Schrager, Fox Sports NFL reporter,
Starting point is 00:19:49 loves your coverage of all of it. You crushed on your mock draft. Good seeing you, buddy. Love seeing you guys. Keep it going. All right. Yeah, Jets crushed it. If Zach Wilson can play, they got themselves a team.
Starting point is 00:20:02 Oh, man, some stories today crack me up. It is amazing. The fatalism in college football now. It's ending. The end is near. I think it's a little fear. A little USC Trojan fear. It's okay when the SEC was dominating.
Starting point is 00:20:18 Last 15 years now, a little the big money cities get involved. Everybody's freaking out. One more herd? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at It podcast. I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English.
Starting point is 00:22:52 Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Starting point is 00:23:20 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. USFL action continues Fridays, the Philadelphia Stars, battle the Michigan Panthers at 10 Eastern on FS1,
Starting point is 00:23:42 then Saturday at 7 Eastern on Fox. Todd Haley's Tampa Bay Bandits take on Skip Holtz and the Birmingham Stallions. So Dion Sanders has gone into coaching, and he's had some success at it, but he does not love the NIL. He said it's free agency. That's all it is, buying players, he said, that's all it is. If you don't have it, you're not going to be able to compete the big money. It's just another way to keep schools that don't have the proper
Starting point is 00:24:10 funding down. I don't think it's tampering. What's happening is many of the high school coaches that coach these young men are reaching out on their behalf well before they enter the portal. You know, it's interesting. I see this all the time. It is amazing. All the fear in America. Believe it or not, pre-NIAL and pre-transfer portal, college football was dominant. Gosh, by 5% of the programs. In 14 of the last 15 years, the SEC has won or played in the national championship. The year they didn't, Ohio State was in it with Oregon, who has the richest booster and another Ohio State, one of the richest programs.
Starting point is 00:24:52 National titles aren't going through Purdue, folks. A lot of you media do-gooders want to put Cincinnati in, get them into the playoff, and then we always go, eh, not great. Sports been dominated for the last 25 years, quarter century. I looked it up this morning by seven programs and you know who they are. I don't love the current NIL and transfer portal frenzy. I don't think it's sustainable. But it's like a lot of new things, Bitcoin, NFTs, drones, the NIL.
Starting point is 00:25:22 It feels like it needs more, I don't know, structure and regulation. But none of them are going to change the world. the dollar is not going anywhere. I don't even know what NFTs are. And UPS and the post office aren't leaving because of drones. College football, more than any sport in America, team sport, has been dominated by like 5% of the programs. Do I worry about the middle of college football?
Starting point is 00:25:52 No, because it's never been driven by it. Here's what I know. if USC's in the top five or six teams, L.A. County loves the Trojans. And there's 10 million people in L.A. County, which is more people that are in 40 states. And the TV ratings, which have been dipping in attendance, which has been dipping, will go back up. And because, you know, the West Coast has big cities. Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles. The West has Denver and Arizona.
Starting point is 00:26:22 A lot of big cities, Vegas. They like college football. for the last, I don't know, 10 years, they can't really compete. It's all going to be okay. I don't know if it's sustainable, I doubt it. But there's a lot of new things out there. And you've convinced yourself that Bitcoin and NFTs will change the world. And I disagree.
Starting point is 00:26:41 And I don't think this will change anything. The rich will get richer. But it's always been driven by a handful of schools. And oh, by the way, they've been paying kids through the church in the South forever. They've been money changing hands. Now you just hear about it because there's sponsors attached to the money, but the sport's been driven by money forever. There was the facilities game and then there was the Harbaugh contract.
Starting point is 00:27:07 And it's always been. The SEC's got the best TV deal and now the Big Ten TV deal. Sports always been driven by money. Now it's just the players get a little bit of it. Joy with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 00:27:24 Exhausting. Exhausting. So Tyler Hero was questionable going into last night's game. He wasn't questionable after it. He was not. He came off the bench, scored 25 points and 29 minutes, as well as having seven assists. The second most in his playoff career.
Starting point is 00:27:42 He can be streaky when he's hot, though. He's a problem when he's hot. Bam out of Bio had 24 points and 12 rebounds, went 8 for 10 from the floor, and 8 for 8 at the line, and Jimmy Butler added 15 points. So all around, good game for the heat. They did have a rough night at three point line, shooting 25% 9 of 36.
Starting point is 00:28:00 So when you don't have Dwell and Bid on the floor, you can get away with that. That's not sustainable moving forward. Right. They were without Juel M. Bid who suffered a right orbital fracture and a concussion in game since six against Toronto. He is not expected to play in game two. They are paying attention to him. You will possibly be available for three and four. He missed a lot of time with this injury the last time he had it on the other eye,
Starting point is 00:28:23 on the left side. So hopefully he's going to be back for three and four. Tobias Harris had 27 points. Tyrese at 19. But James Hardin had 16 points. This is what he is, Joy. And 5 of 13 shooting, nine rebounds and five assists. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:39 His streak of being held under 25 points is what? Is now 11 straight playoff games, as long as since he was coming off the bench for OKC to start his career. Now, it does help that Maxie and Tobias Harris are more than capable on any night of dropping 23 points. That helps a lot. Yes, but they need James Hardin to do more. Last night especially. Yes, and it's apparent, well, yes, I mean, they're without to LMB. James Hardin was supposed to be the other superstar that came in in that trade. Now, again, I think when you're looking at the trade overall, obviously the Sixers are still winning.
Starting point is 00:29:12 The nets are nowhere to be found in the postseason, and Ben Simmons never saw the floor, but they need more from James Harden. And is he capable of giving more at this point? I don't know. I thought going into the playoffs that James Hardin was at the top of the list of guys with the most amount of pressure. You know, obviously if you're the defending champions, you have pressure on you in Milwaukee and Janice. He stepped up to the plate showing he's the best player in the league. I didn't think the Nets actually had that much pressure on them. They were a low seed and they had no continuity all season. James Hardin is a big part of the trade.
Starting point is 00:29:47 He's not had the postseason success. He needs to have for the level of superstar that he is. and he's kind of struggling right now as far as what they need him to do. So the Sixers were also six of 34 from a three-point line, shooting 17%. So it was just all around bad game for the Sixers, and the Heat are a good team, but they're going to need a whole lot more from everyone. Game two is tomorrow in Miami. The heater currently favored by eight and a half, according to Fox Bet.
Starting point is 00:30:12 Luca, in the other game last night, scored 45 points in Game 1 against the Suns, but the Mabbs still lost, and Jason Kidd said they're going to need some of their role players to step up and help Luca if they want to win this series. He got whatever he wanted. When you look at the shots, you know, in the pain behind the arc, mid-range, and then also I thought he got his teammates some great looks that we normally have made. I thought he played great.
Starting point is 00:30:41 We just got to help him get someone, you know, to join the party. The final score was not indicative of how that game. Oh, God. Phoenix was head. by 10, 12. They dominated the whole game. Whole game. The Mavs lost 121, 114.
Starting point is 00:30:56 Luca also had 12 rebounds and eight assists in addition to his 45 points. So he had an unbelievable game. But the Mavs other four starters combined for less points than Luca, 39. Dorian Finney Smith had 15. Jalen Brunson at 13. Reggie Bullock at seven points. And Dwight Powell had four points. So he's right.
Starting point is 00:31:15 They need someone else to step up. Spencer Dinwiddie, I think, had eight points last night. So they need everyone. who contributed. The Sons are what we, as you said, they're Berkshire Hathaway. We know what we're going to get from the Sons every single night. To Nick's point, you have the best player on the floor
Starting point is 00:31:30 in Luca Donchich. If anyone else steps up and has a big game, you probably win that game just because of how good Luca was last night. So we know the Sons are the best team in the league. That's what consistency gets you. If you take advantage and play good defense,
Starting point is 00:31:47 I mean, that's what's going to happen. So Luca can put up 45 and it's irrelevant. game two is tomorrow night in Phoenix. The sons are favored by six, according to Fox Bet. So some big NFL news yesterday. The NFL suspended D'Andre Hopkins six games for violating the PED policy. His manager released a statement saying that D.Hop and everyone he works with are completely shocked by the findings.
Starting point is 00:32:10 So he said he's committed to demonstrating that he did not knowingly take a banned substance, and they're testing every products he used to figure out how this could have happened. So even if it's taken accidentally, that doesn't particularly. the player from suspension. I'd love to see a list of stuff you can't take. Or maybe you can. Like is there, you know, because it was the old, when I was in high school, it was the old poppy seed excuse.
Starting point is 00:32:32 If you got busted for pot, you'd be like, I had poppy seed muffin for breakfast. And that got you off. I got you got a lot of trouble. Not that I was ever tested or busted, but that was the, that was in the hallways. That's what people talked about. Did you ever have to be drug tested? Oh, I've been drug tested multiple times. Really?
Starting point is 00:32:46 And won't let me in the house without it. Oh, come on. No, I was drug tested. Yeah, Tampa. Tampa. I remember literally I showed up to Tampa and thank God I'd kick the habit. So I got there. And the first thing they did, I walked in and they sent me down to this hospital on the Kennedy Boulevard at some little mall. And I sat in the back, I sat there in the back and waited and waited and I took it and sweat and bolts on that one, Joe. I had to be drug tested once for a job for a radio station.
Starting point is 00:33:17 Yeah. You should want your people on radio to be a little off. I thought that's one of the words. Yeah, I was actually kind of surprised by it. Not like a pilot or something. But, but. How'd you do on that? Well, I passed. I was not positive.
Starting point is 00:33:30 That's how it was going to. I drank a lot of water that week. But I did pass. No, I'm sure that the list is, you know, obviously very complicated for these. But, you know, these guys do take a lot of different supplements and stuff. So he's saying it's an accident, you know, I don't, I'm not going to get crazy about this, you know, it is what it is. He's projected to lose about $5.2.
Starting point is 00:33:55 $2 million from his base salary and bonuses due to suspension. So he's going to lose some money for it, even if it is accidental. But, you know, this is why if you're working with, you know, those kind of possible substances, you have to be very careful. Well, what you're finding is, what you're finding is a lot of the athletes that do this are rehabbing off an injuries. They're not doing it. They've made their money.
Starting point is 00:34:15 Right. Yeah, it's not like they're, yes. You're not finding a lot of 22 years. year olds do it in football. What you're finding is a 28-year-old coming off a second injury, and they're like, I'm good, but this will get me better, faster. Like, you can rationalize a lot of things in life. Like, a lot of these older players that do it, like, I know what they're thinking. They're not doing it. They've made money. Yeah, they're not juicing to get their contract or, you know, and that's not even what necessarily what this is. Like, it should just be a random
Starting point is 00:34:44 substance that happens to be banned. We don't know what the specific thing is, but he is going to miss some time. I do think it's more significant to their success than you do based off of their lineup. A lot of people do. I think Arizona's, God, their depth chart, and they got the best tied in in the country. Man, there are a lot of weapons. People are looking at their end of the year failures. It's like, don't do that. They were really good. Kyler got hurt, DeAndre Hopkins, so they didn't have quite the vertical presence. Like, watch out. Because this team, remember when they were like 8-0? We were like, that's the best team in the league. Tyler was in an MVP conversation.
Starting point is 00:35:20 When they were healthy, they lit the league up. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd line. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the I-Hard Radio app. Hey, I'm Doug Gottlie.

Starting point is 00:37:59 or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the iHeart radio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush
Starting point is 00:38:16 didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:38:37 To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really?
Starting point is 00:38:59 Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. If you're a valued customer, you deserve a simple gesture of appreciation from your credit card company. Learn more, Discover.com slash match. Limitations apply. The Warriors play tonight. I think they play tonight, don't they?
Starting point is 00:39:25 In Memphis. So, Dr. Mon Green. It's Buck, Celtics, and Warriors Grizzlies tonight. What's the line on that? The Celtics are favored by five. All right. Is Memphis favored by a point or two, probably? Draymond Green, obviously, got that flagrant.
Starting point is 00:39:42 You got Warriors minus two. It'll be a close game. You know, Draymond is a fascinating player. So it was a second round pick, total grinder. He is part of my podcast company, the volume. He's awesome. He was viewed as a tweener and had kind of an odd game, but he's become a huge catalyst. And, you know, it's a lot of people, he can be annoying.
Starting point is 00:40:01 And he's got a very Rodman-esque feel, but he's a better offensive player. But he was asked about the ejection and his game. I'm never going to change the way I play basketball. It's got me this far. He's got me three championships, four all-stars, defensive player a year. not going to change now. My reputation is a badge of honor. Not everybody can earn that reputation.
Starting point is 00:40:23 And so what's interesting about Draymond is, you know, society is always trying to kind of push everybody into a box and to be one thing. But look who's really important in the playoffs, Draymond Green, Chris Paul, the sons are a complete mid-range team. And this is the thing about the NBA. I love analytics, but analytics doesn't tell you about a guy's toughness or his heart. or is he a catalyst in the locker room? I would take Draymond Green's career over Carmelo Anthony or Russell Westbrook. And be honest with you, I think I'd take it over James Harden. James Hardin isn't beloved anywhere.
Starting point is 00:41:00 James Hardin's a guy that could score the basketball and was a comet for about four years. And I know he's an all-timer and it'll be a Hall of Famer, but I don't think of James Hardin and winning or Westbrook and winning in Carmelo and winning. I think of guys who didn't take care of them. or didn't take care of their game and eroded quickly. Draymond is substantial and authentic and averages nine points a game and has three titles and this group could probably win another or two. That matters.
Starting point is 00:41:31 Everybody's trying to fit everybody into that analytics three point box. But if you really look at the playoffs, Jimmy Butler's not a great shooter. You know, Draymond Green, Chris Paul in the mid-range jumper. these playoffs are once again being controlled by a lot of players that like Drew Holiday were overlooked or Janus for a long time couldn't hit a free throw. Listen, the three point thing is great if you can shoot them like Steph Curry. But I think there's an argument to be made that after Steph, the most valuable player for this franchise over the last 25 years. I mean, Rick Berry, Steph Curry, and Draymond Green.
Starting point is 00:42:13 I think he means that much to the franchise. And he's not willing to change who he is. Sometimes you've got to deal with some nonsense. But how valuable is he? He's the Rodman of the Bulls. He's the one guy you don't want picking you up at half court. Second story in the NBA that I thought was interesting. So Bill Orham covers the Lakers for the Athletic,
Starting point is 00:42:35 and he wrote a story yesterday. Laker fans were throwing up in their mouth that the Lakers should keep Russell Westbrook. and by keeping Westbrook in the first half of the season, show him off and essentially fool the NBA. He's a depreciating asset, as economists call it. And my takeaway is that's what the Lakers have been reduced to, complaining about an HBO series and trying to fool the NBA on Russell Westbrook.
Starting point is 00:43:05 By the way, the Niners and the Browns are also trying to fool the NFL with Jimmy Garoppolo and Baker Mayfield. Everybody knows they're trying to move off them and there's no bidders. But the one thing I'll say about Jimmy Garapolo that Westbrook and Baker-Mayfield have in common. And it's a thing I talk about a lot. Toxicity is a turnoff. And people will tolerate difficult agitators, Baker early, Westbrook early. But the minute you lose some of your skills or a road, people want no part of you.
Starting point is 00:43:40 people want no part of Westbrook and no part of Baker. Now, Garapolo has a lower ceiling, has injuries, and he's pretty expensive. But Garapolo is going to age well because he's willing to kind of dive into your culture and be part of something that's beyond him. That's the downside to having one of these power brands. Like Baker's got a big brand, but he's his own brand. And so can he fit into your culture? And most people around the league are like, nah.
Starting point is 00:44:10 We'll draft a quarterback in the third round. Nah. We'll take a shot on Kenny Pickett. Baker's more talented than Kenny Pickett. I absolutely believe that. If Baker would have been agreeable and more Jimmy Garoppolo, he'd have multiple teams right now. Because you could make the argument, well, I mean, it's Cleveland. They butchered him.
Starting point is 00:44:31 He got hurt. It's Cleveland. It's the ownership. That toxicity thing, there'll be times in your life if you're talented and young that you can get away with it. But Garoppolo, I think, will move first on the market or get the next best opportunity because he's just easy to get along with. And that matters a ton. Another NBA thought. For years and years, we've known the Splash Brothers on the West Coast, multiple titles. It's Clay Thompson. It's Steph Curry. They apparently have found a third Splash Brother, Jordan Poole. Now, they're not
Starting point is 00:45:05 the Splash Brothers, but on the East Coast, the Celtics have Jason Tatum, Jalen Brown, and Marcus smart, five years, no titles. I think tonight's going to be very interesting. If Yonis goes in again and dominate, and Yonis did not play well in game one, he's going nowhere, and Chris Middleton's not there. So Milwaukee dominated the opening game on the road with Yonis having a very average night,
Starting point is 00:45:33 no Chris Middleton on the road. I mean, Boston was rested. They had a sweep. They're at home. and it wasn't competitive. What do you do? I mean, that's the thing with the Splash Brothers and titles. You're going to keep Drayman for another few years.
Starting point is 00:45:50 You'll keep Clay Thompson because you've got that three titles, the ceiling. I mean, if Golden State knocked off Phoenix, would we be stunned? But if they lose tonight and they go down 02 and you can't beat Janus without Chris Middleton, what do you do? It's very Toronto Raptors. Like tonight feels like not the end of those three, but the beginning of discussions of what are we doing here? What are we doing? Are we Toronto?
Starting point is 00:46:19 Because Toronto for years. Oh, excellent. Number one. See, they'd be great. Get to the playoffs swept by LeBron. And at some point, they're like, we can keep doing this Canadian thing. We're nice people up here. But we've got to take a big swing.
Starting point is 00:46:31 And they didn't got a title. And even though Kauai left, it was like, that was worth it. Absolutely. That was worth it. Boston loses tonight. I'm not saying it's the end of the three, but it's the beginning of discussions in the offseason. What will be doing? We're the Celtics.
Starting point is 00:46:47 We're not Toronto. Like, we're the Celtics. We've got a lot of banners. Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, Bruins, you win the cup. You win Super Bowls. You win the title. And so I do think it's interesting because the reality is Tatum is a great, great player. Marcus Smart is a heart and soul defender.
Starting point is 00:47:07 Jalen Brown's good sometimes. not consistent, like a Jordan pool, it just depends on the night. But, you know, Boston has done almost everything right. They really have. They're very golden state other side of the country. I mean, they had a coach, Kerr and Brad Stevens, good front office, drafted well, developed very well. The difference is one team got into the three ball sooner than the other team.
Starting point is 00:47:36 And one team just for years could never get past, you know, LeBron J. games matter. But you start, you lose tonight. You can't beat this Milwaukee team because Chris Middleton's going to be back potentially by the end of the series and he's back next year. And I think what you're going to find with Milwaukee, if they win another title, you're going to find some ring chasers. You're going to find the occasional veteran guy that's like, this has been really good for Drew Holiday. It's been really good for Brooke Lopez. It's a great place to play. You don't have to be a star. You can make money. You know, like last year may have been the weakest team. You start getting
Starting point is 00:48:11 the honest LeBron and his prime. There's a lot of veteran guys, the David West kind of guys, the Ray Allen like, kind of feel like a title. It's good for my brand. I got one. I'd like to have two, three. So big, big game for the Celtics tonight. Not a lot of must wins. This is a must win.
