Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an IHeart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Hey guys, it's us. The Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe. I'm Kevin. And I'm Nick. And guess what? We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas.
Starting point is 00:00:12 We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. We get to ask other people questions because we're sick and tired of being asked questions. Well, sick and tired is a strong way to put it. But, you know, tired and sick. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you.
Starting point is 00:00:30 you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy. Not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel. Help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the ice. Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:04 Every family has its secrets. But what happens when you discover that your dad has been living a double life? That is not the look of an innocent man. Is everyone lying to me about who they are? I felt such desperation. I felt it was what I had to do. Listen to deep cover the family man on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcast. or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:35 Here's something that should not be as complicated as it is, getting a racist statue removed. And here's something that should be a whole lot easier than it is, getting a new one put up in its place. I'm Akela Hughes, and Rebel Spirit Season 2 is about both of those things. As I was watching these statues come down, I was thinking about what it meant that I grew up in a majority black city in which there were more homages to enslavers than there were to enslave people.
Starting point is 00:01:57 Listen to Rebel Spirit Season 2 on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, it's Edwin Castro, also known as Castro 1021. And I'm Kunky, his best friend, and business manager. And we've got a new show called The 1021 podcast. I'm taking you behind the scenes on how I became one of Twitch's most popular streamers. We also love sports. And with the World Cup right around the corner,
Starting point is 00:02:24 we'll be breaking down the biggest storylines ahead of the big tournament here in the USA. Listen to the 1021 podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports Radio in noon to 3 Eastern 9 a.m. to noon Pacific. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the IHeart Radio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. All right. Here we go at Tower 2. It's Wednesday. Four minutes from Joel Clatt live in Los Angeles. It's the herd wherever you may be and however you may be listening. Thanks for making us part of your day. J-Mack, a lot of energy. When I get a good night, sleep, I go to bed early. I didn't, I smoked only half a cigar. I was in bed by 8.40 last night. I am Michigan getting ready to face Ohio State Clat over here. I'm an underdog, but I'm feeling it today.
Starting point is 00:03:36 I thought I caught a whiff of cigar on your breath about an hour ago. Late night with the cigars. No, it was an early night. I didn't even need neurogun. Oh, wow. Didn't need it. So this is interesting, and this is going to drive J-Mack crazy. But, you know, I think Kyle Shanahan is a rock star as a coach.
Starting point is 00:03:56 But all great coaches have a hole. Belichick, tone deaf to offense. right like all great coaches have a hole Andy Reid would tell you he's not a personnel guy Jimmy Johnson is Sean Peyton is so Christian McCaffrey is now he's lost a little bit of his fastball and you knew when you were the Niners
Starting point is 00:04:18 because he's a running back and they age quickly and he'd been beat up in Carolina he'd been injured that you knew it was like a three year you know he's like bringing an old veteran starter to your pitching rotation you got about three years of big innings and then you kind of know what you're getting So McCaffrey, the last three years, is the game changer. It's not quarterback for the Niners.
Starting point is 00:04:39 With Christian, they're 23 and 8. He doesn't play, they're 7 and 8. And he's missed 44% of their games, and I would guess that will go up. So we've all seen dynasties in the last several years end. We saw the Patriots dynasty end, why they lost a superstar quarterback. We saw Kobe and Shaq's dynasty end. why ego? We saw the Warriors dynasty dry up.
Starting point is 00:05:06 Why age? All different stuff. The goat leaves. One gets old. A lot of egos in Los Angeles. So the Niners are the near dynasty that never happened. They have a different dilemma. Why in the world could Kyle Shanahan not win it?
Starting point is 00:05:24 And I believe, and this happens, you know, they often say your greatest strength as a person is your greatest liability. Your confidence can all of a sudden pivot to arrogance. And that's not what Shanahan's about. But Shanahan has such a belief in his offense and his schemes, in my opinion, and I think he's brilliant, that it became a weakness. He settled at quarterback. Garoppolo and Brock Purdy. You are not beating Stafford. You're not beating Mahomes, Alan Brady with Purdy and Garoppolo.
Starting point is 00:05:59 McVeigh, who is also great, but schematically you can argue he's not Shanahan, upgraded. Goff, who's better than Garoppolo and Purdy. McVeigh's like, no, I'm going to upgrade to Stafford, and he got a ring. So I do think it's interesting. There's about five rock stars in the NFL at head coach. McVan, Shanahan are both rock stars. But when you look now at Christian McCaffrey, and again, to me, he was a big innings guy that came in here with about a three-year runway. It's not the same.
Starting point is 00:06:37 He's missed 44% of his games. I think that goes up to 55, 60% potentially. And he's a Hall of Famer. He's unbelievable. In my opinion, only two running backs. Walter Payton, Barry Sanders are probably better. Adrian Peterson was good as well, but he couldn't catch like McCaffrey. So I just think it's very interesting
Starting point is 00:06:54 is that as much of a wizard as Kyle Shanahan is, I think it's a cautionary tale that sometimes your greatest strength can become a little bit of a liability. He had so much confidence in his schemes and offense, he's like, I can win it with Garoppola, I can win it with Purdy, and what did both deal with?
Starting point is 00:07:15 Injuries. And he settled. And then by the time he took a swing on Trey Lance, it was the COVID year, and all those quarterbacks missed. Here's Shanahan this week on the Christian McCaffrey injury. Frustrating year for him, he worked his ass off to get back to this point. And I think he was really feeling good and about to take off. But he'll get through this.
Starting point is 00:07:39 He's a hell of a player, hell of a person, and an unbelievable 49er. And he'll be back stronger than ever next year to help us. All right. Here we go. What a weekend of college football. And it just starts now. The season's getting crazy. Let's bring in the voice of college football.
Starting point is 00:07:57 Joel Klatte to the program. Let's hear it for Joel Klaas. What's up, dude? How are you doing? Breeze later, Brady yesterday. Joel Klaat, Sanjit. We're just all stars. Yeah, that's right.
Starting point is 00:08:08 Now, I will admit, I like the Buckeyes to win that game. It caught me a little off guard. When you were broadcasting that game, because I was sitting there thinking, what is Klat thinking? When you got to the late, Second quarter, were you thinking to yourself, what's Ohio State doing? I mean, yes, and I was saying that on the air a couple of times. But late in the second quarter, remember in the two-minute series right before the half,
Starting point is 00:08:37 they finally started using tempo, some vertical routes, and they went right down the field. And in a few of the series, let's remember, in the first half, they were able to go right down the field. They were stopped on fourth down on one of those. And so they were gaining yards throwing the football, and that's where their advantage was. and our, my conversations, they knew that, you know, they understood that. And the first half played out, they go in with a tie game. It's 10 to 10.
Starting point is 00:09:02 And I'm thinking to myself, they get the ball. And what they just saw and learned in that last series was they're going to come right back to the tempo. But they didn't. But they didn't really. Well, not in the first series. And I just, I got to tell you, it wasn't until after the game that it really dawned on me. I think that they were playing, you know, around Will Howard, who was maybe banged up in that game.
Starting point is 00:09:27 And after the early interception, I think that they got spooked a little bit in terms of the way that he was seeing the field. And then I think that they felt like their defense just would not give up a score. Because remember, at that point, it's 10-10, and the only reason that Michigan scored was first and goal inside the five after the interception. And then they get a short punt, and they get the ball, and they go five yards and kick a 50-plus-yard field goal.
Starting point is 00:09:47 And so I think that Ryan and Chip, in a lot of ways, looked at that, looked at the, way their quarterback was playing, looked at the way their defense was playing, and I think that in the third quarter, they thought to themselves, one score wins this. A field goal wins this, and that's the way they called the game in the second half. I think, you know, it's interesting. What if he loses in the first round of the playoff? Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:10:12 Now, I wouldn't fire it, but I do think we can say this. When you stacked him up against Harbaugh, he felt like the second best coach. on the field. That's okay. Most of the NFL does. So let's not overreact that Harbaugh beat him. Let's not overreact to that. Belichick beat Andy Reid. Andy Reid beat Belichick. Sometimes you lose a great coach. Tom Kaufflin, by the way, who should be in the Hall of Fame, it's idiotic that he's not, beat Belichick twice in the Super Bowl. Twice. Great coaches beat. By the way, Belichick for a year, struggle with Andy Reid, even before he had Mahomes. So it's okay to lose to Harbaugh. And this is what I would tell Ohio State fans. Just take the Harbaugh out.
Starting point is 00:10:51 He's arguably next to Belichick and Reed and Sean Payton, his best coach in the league football, on the planet. But then there's a Clemson loss, and then there's a Georgia loss. So, and Ohio State's not reasonable. They're irrational. Do you think there's a chance he gets fired if he lost to Tennessee in the first round? I don't think so. I don't think so. Just because I'm only going based on what their athletic director has said, Ross Bjork.
Starting point is 00:11:16 Remember, Ross is fairly new to the job. This is really his first full year on the job as athletic director. at Ohio State, and I don't think that he wants to go down that road. I also think, and I know that people say like, oh, you know, everyone has money, but it would cost a significant amount of money. Probably you're looking at upwards of $45 to $55 million just to buy out the current coaching staff you would need to then go and hire somebody and then spend money in the NIL. You're looking at another $20 to $25 million to do that.
Starting point is 00:11:46 So you're in the neighborhood of $75 to $85 million to make that decision. And I don't think that that's, I don't think he has the appetite for it. And I don't think that that would be the right move. I really don't. And this is the other part of this is like, I don't believe that I don't think that this is going to last forever. I think that Ryan is a very good coach. I think that there's a mental block with Michigan right now. And the game plan on Saturday I think was evident of that,
Starting point is 00:12:18 but there were obviously other factors. And this feels like something that when he gets over the hump, it's going to be big. I mean, Harbaugh didn't win over Urban Meyer, and they stuck with him when they thought they would fire him in the COVID year. They stuck with him and look at what happened. You look at the history of college football, and what you'll see is that most often,
Starting point is 00:12:40 even the greatest coaches in the history of our sport, have taken a while to win their championship. It took Osborne quite a while. It took Bowden quite a while. You know, it's very rare that you get these guys that win it right away like Bob Stoops or Larry Coker. It's generally the opposite. Guys take a while. Urban Meyer took a while.
Starting point is 00:12:57 Sabin, it took a while as a head coach in order to get to that point and then eventually win the national championship. And it's okay for people to learn on the job. I do think I said this. If you go look at Sabin, he starts at Michigan State. I mean, he averaged seven wins or something. Then he goes to LSU. and he goes to Miami doesn't work, maybe could have eventually, and then he goes to Alabama.
Starting point is 00:13:19 First year they lost to Louisiana Monroe at home. That's right. They got boat raced by Utah and the Sugar Bowl. And they lost to Florida that year as an undefeated. They couldn't beat Tim Tebow and Urban Meyer. So it took a while. I mean, Nick Saban didn't win a title until he's, you know, well into his head coaching career.
Starting point is 00:13:35 So I'm with you. But I also understand, like, that fan base is irrational. There's no question about it. Yeah. And the problem, and I think Ryan even admit this is like Saturday was not great, was not great at all. It was bad. Because they allowed Michigan to get in their head to play the game, the only game that they could win.
Starting point is 00:13:57 There was one out of ten paths for that Michigan team to beat this Ohio State team, and they allowed that path to take place. I don't want to go Dr. Phil here, but I've got a theory a little bit on this. So there's certain things you can say to a coastal elite, not that I am one or no any. but if you said to me, oh, Coastal Elite, I'd be like, yeah, 72 degrees today. How's it in Indy? I don't care if you call me to Coastal Elite, either to New Yorkers. I've been called that my whole life, and I'm like, I love the Midwest.
Starting point is 00:14:24 I fly over it all the time. So, but in the Midwest, but in the Midwest, if you say to somebody, you're soft. They don't like that. We are soft out here. We are. I'm soft. I am. I took, I take work off for an ice cream.
Starting point is 00:14:42 headache. I will take a day off any day. But Midwestern people, and Ryan Day was told the last three years, you're soft, Ohio State soft, you can't run the ball, and it got into his head. And I think if you told Lincoln Riley that, or you told nobody cares. I think that play, he was coaching that game to prove a point. Well, I know that that's the way it looks. I don't think that he was coaching to prove a point. If you gave him, like if Will Howard is seeing the football field really well and playing well, they throw the ball all over the place. That game was called because of the way the game happened. I don't think it was, so I'm just, I'm just disagreeing.
Starting point is 00:15:23 I don't think he's there like, we're going to prove we're tough. I believe that the circumstances of the way his defense was playing and the way his quarterback was playing led to the way that the game is called. And the evidence is the third quarter. So in the third quarter, they've got first and 10 at the 19 yard line with about six minutes, 622 left. That series ends in a really bad interception. Really bad interception.
Starting point is 00:15:47 Then immediately Davis Warren throws them an interception. And Caleb Downs picks it off. It's a 16 yard line. Now it's first in 10 at the 16 yard line. And your quarterback just threw a really bad interception. And guess what they did? Played for a field goal. Because they felt like a field goal was going to win the game at that point
Starting point is 00:16:03 and they missed the field goal. So I thought that was more what happened rather than this narrative of toughness and softness and everything like that. I will say, though, generally speaking, it does feel, it does feel at times, like Michigan is the guy in the lunchroom
Starting point is 00:16:20 that's like, hit me in the stomach. And then Ohio State is like the fast, you know, popular kid that has all this skill. Yeah. And gets baited into a stomach punching contest with like O'Doyle.
Starting point is 00:16:32 You know, O'Doyle rules. And it's like, that's the way it feels sometimes. That's a good one. I like that. So I'm just going to approach Nothing bothers me about the 12-team playoff.
Starting point is 00:16:43 I would ideally not like to have a three-loss team in there. Ideally. I'm not an idealist. Okay. I'm not. Like, I work in radio TV. I understand the game. I'm a bad segment from working at Costco.
Starting point is 00:16:58 I get it. So my point is... Wait, would you be a greeter? Oh, I'd be the best greeting. You would be the best greeter? Yeah. Batteries in the back? Can you imagine Colin greeting at Costco?
Starting point is 00:17:08 Why is that funny to you? Because you would just be like judging people as they walk by. I don't like your shoes. His walk is weird right there. I don't think he's going to get the sale. You know? I can be a little judgy. Okay, that's fine.
Starting point is 00:17:21 Okay, so the point is on this, and you're one of these reasonable people. I try to. It always tries to throw a life preserver to the sad. You're very empathetic. I am not. Okay. I'm going to call it out. Hey, Miami, you're playing a lousy conference.
Starting point is 00:17:36 Your last two losses, you don't beat any of you don't have a good win. Yeah. Okay, Alabama's got three losses. Ideally, I don't like that. I don't think you should have two mulligans, but they beat Georgia. And, you know, losing to Oklahoma is not the worst thing in the world. They also were three-and-one against ranked teams. So I don't like them having an extra mulligan.
Starting point is 00:17:55 There's not a great option. Let's start there. So I'm taking Alabama over Miami is a better option. I think, I think based on the strength of schedule, based on what Miami did within their ACC play, they had a very favorable ACC schedule, or they didn't have to play many of the Is there any other kind? See, there you go. There you go.
Starting point is 00:18:14 Greeting. I morphed right into snarky guy. You did. That's it. The snarky greeter. Bama's resume is not great, but to me, the bubble was those four teams from 11 to 14. So it's Bama, it's South Carolina, it's Ole Miss, and it's Miami. And if you put Alabama, head-to-head, resume for resume with all of those bubble teams, they win the argument.
Starting point is 00:18:36 There you go. I did this on my program for today's show. And I know people don't like it. I understand that. And I'm not saying that this is a great option. I'm just saying that in an argument, Bama wins those arguments. Miami does not have a ranked win. You can point at that and you can say they're also losing at the wrong time,
Starting point is 00:18:54 losing two of their last three games. Yeah. This is not a great option. And I don't think Alabama is a great team. I don't think that they have a chance to win the national championship. Either do I. But in a resume argument with Miami, they win that argument. I think that that would be the main point.
Starting point is 00:19:11 Okay, so this whole flag planting. Yeah, at the end of the game. Okay, so people overreact to everything. And my take is they're young people, these rivalry games, it's easy to sit, you know, a thousand miles away and go, what are these hooligans doing? But if you live in Columbus or Ann Arbor, this is a big deal for these kids. Well, it's not just a big deal, Colin. By the way, like, think about it just for a moment. But you and I kind of saying it happened.
Starting point is 00:19:41 I'm going to be similar with you here. Think about it for just a moment. Why do we love college football? Passion. Passion. Wild. Tribalism. Yes.
Starting point is 00:19:53 We feel. Regionalism. We love it. As fans, as members of those institutions, we are gators, siminels, buckies, wolverines, buffaloes. Wherever you went to school, I don't even know. Screaming Eagles, thank you. Yeah, see, there you go.
Starting point is 00:20:10 You know why is because we feel like part of our identity was forged at those places. That's right. This is a real thing. This is a real thing. And in professional sports, you can't say that. You can't say like, yeah, I am a cowboy. I mean, there are some that try and they're lunatics. And that's what's so great about college football.
Starting point is 00:20:30 And so here's the problem with that is that it makes it an incredibly emotional sport. Once it's emotional, then it can go right to the red line and, particular in rivalries. Now you've got like family rivalries, right? You've got like blood thick rivalries going on. They go back decades and decades and decades. So if it overheats a little bit, I'm not going to throw the baby out with the bathwater. It's part of what is college football. Now, do I love it? No. Do I wish that it would take, do I wish that this would happen? No. Is it ugly for the sport at times? Yes. However, however, if I'm going to love the sport because it goes up to that line, I cannot be upset when it inches over that line. And I'm not going to chastise the individuals
Starting point is 00:21:13 for being emotional in that situation. I know what it feels like to lose to your rival at home. I know what it feels like to beat your rival on the road. One is elation and the other is the depth of depression that you can't even fathom. Why? Because it's tribal. That's how we identify. So, folks, if you're mad at 18 to 22 year olds, being emotional about what happens at the end of the game, I think your anger is misplaced. Yeah, we agree on that. That makes me rethink my entire line of...
Starting point is 00:21:49 Hey, I know what it's like to lose an intramural game over time. Yeah, see? I went sideways. I tell you what? I didn't sleep for half a day. And by the way, what's the fix? It's like, should we not have flags? Okay.
Starting point is 00:22:04 But it's like Texas planted their flag on Michigan's field. earlier this year. Baker Mayfield did it, famously at Ohio State. Yeah, I get it. This stuff happens. Okay. I don't know, man. So I was, you know, as I'm prone to do, I was at the big game, USC Notre Dame. So, and sharing, you know,
Starting point is 00:22:25 I try to add something. I just don't go to the game like you and then exit with a paycheck. I try to add something. Oh, interesting. Yeah. Maybe get on a headset. So anyway, here's my thing with Lincoln Riley. It's not the 6 and 6. It's not that. Really?
Starting point is 00:22:41 I don't love that because I think life has momentum and inertia. It could be 6 and 6 and you lost your star quarterback. Here's what bothers me. Today's recruiting day. Alabama is going to sign more kids from Southern California than USC. Yeah, that's a huge problem. That is an issue, is that there's this preciousness to Lincoln Riley. I'll just say that it's like, that is.
Starting point is 00:23:07 a way bigger issue than going 6 and 6. That's my point. There's this thing you know, and again, I don't want to bully people that are 6 and 6. I think Brian Kelly's a great coach, bad year. Well, and S.E was competitive. I don't like their
Starting point is 00:23:23 lack of connectivity to the local dominant great high schools. I'm telling you, man. That's a problem. This is what's wild is that you could build a top 4 college football team,
Starting point is 00:23:39 probably the national champion, and all you would have to do is go with a radius of, I'll call it, 50 miles from USC. And you can win the national championship. I think you, I've always believed to get some of your, I think there are other parts of the country
Starting point is 00:23:57 that deliver big defensive linemen. Yeah. We eat too well out here or something. I don't know what it is. Our linemen are like 260. That would be an area, although guess who just put together one of the great defensive line performances I've ever seen from an individual
Starting point is 00:24:11 Mason Graham. From Servite. From Servite, California. He was the L.A. County player of the year in the heavyweight wrestling champion. He had no interest in playing from Michigan. And he almost single-handedly, along with Kenneth Grant, the Devens of Tackle, he almost
Starting point is 00:24:27 single-handedly beat Ohio State because Ohio State decided they were going to run the football right on. He was unblockable. Single teams, teams didn't matter and he's from servite and it's like what he wasn't interested smart kid that's a problem to jim harb but that's a problem it is a problem i'll i'll throw this out let me let me let me let me end it here put a bow on it it's good to see you it's great to see you because a lot of times you come here and i know i'm going to have to be hard on you was it today one of those days
Starting point is 00:24:55 no i thought was pretty nice i said when i agree with you you think it no you and i disagreed a lot when when i threw that pretty accurate theory on ryan day midwest we're soft he got into his head. Yeah, but that was just wrong. Oh, okay. Sure, you bet. Okay, well, it happens infrequently, but I'll own it. Okay, let's do this.
Starting point is 00:25:14 Is that here's the best part. So you're not like this, but a lot of people are like this. They don't like change. I can remember when I was a kid, and the speed limit was 55 to 65. Oh, I had somebody in my family. We're all going to die. And the manufacturer said, let's build better cars. No, I mean, the Autobahn had a better safety record than our freeways,
Starting point is 00:25:33 and they're driving 100. The bottom line is society changes, people overreact, baseball. Oh, you put it in a pitcher's clock. The tenant's up, ratings up, games faster, it's better for the sport. Fox just broke records on baseball. And they made a bunch of changes. They're going to make another one, the golden it bad. Yeah, I heard about that.
Starting point is 00:25:49 Yeah, I love that. Okay. So my point is, all this NIL and transfer portal, it's a lot of motion for college football. But here's the great part about it. The unintended benefit that I didn't see coming, it eliminates great teams. That's right. Because Georgia, Texas, Ohio State, Notre Dame, they get the stockpile talent. Well, now, now all these Louisville's or Oregon's or Washington's, a UCLA or whoever it is has money goes,
Starting point is 00:26:20 do you want to be a backup left tackle? You're a five-star kid. Come start for us in L.A. This is exactly right. And it's an unintended benefit is that you're like, the Bama stuff, congrats to Bama. That's not happening ever again. I don't think so either. I don't think so.
Starting point is 00:26:33 I think the closest thing that we've got to a team that could really dominate for a few years is Texas right now with the way that they've built their roster. But talented players are unwilling to be backups. I mean, that's just the way college football is. And before, they were forced to be backups if they wanted to play for the teams that could compete for and win the national championship, because that was such a narrow scope of who could actually compete for and win national championships. So now you expand it out. So I'm just talking about the expansion of the playoffs. and how that drives parity.
Starting point is 00:27:04 But then you also have now resources in terms of how teams and programs all over the country can spend money on NIL. That's right. The transfer portal allows for that freedom to go to different places. And now all of a sudden you've got teams like Indiana in the playoff. And Arizona State playing for a right to go to the playoffs in Iowa State for the right to go to the playoffs. I watched the 1,300 overtimes in Georgia, Georgia Tech. I'm still not sure who the better team is. That's 100% right.
Starting point is 00:27:31 I always thought Georgia Tech was an engineering school. and I'm like, I think they're better than Georgia. There is the peak. So the best teams can be has been brought down just a little bit. And the middle has risen. And college football has never been better because of it. And now all of a sudden, the regular season has been the best regular season that I can remember. It's nuts.
Starting point is 00:27:52 As far as competitiveness. Now, you can say like, well, Georgia's not great and this is not great. Yes, it's fantastic, actually. It's fantastic that even Ohio State with this roster that we, all thought was the best roster that we had seen in a long time is not infallible. Look at, look at Oregon is undefeated. Narrowly beat Boise State. That's right. Narrowly beat Idaho. It's true. It's great.
Starting point is 00:28:13 So I'm with you. That's why I look at this playoff and I think that there could be some real chaos. I think there could be some real chaos. I think that there's going to be a couple of first round matchups. Yep. Pending the way that this weekend goes, think about this. If Oregon beats Penn State, they fall probably behind Georgia and Ohio State. If Texas beats Georgia. They probably sit in there right there. That means I think that we're likely to get, I think that there's a good chance that we get some sort of
Starting point is 00:28:40 like Tennessee at Penn State, Alabama at Ohio State, probably Indiana at Georgia. That's the way the first round kind of looks. And if Clemson's able to beat SMU, it would be Clemson at Notre Dame. I believe that's going to be the first round of the college football playoffs. I'm glad we
Starting point is 00:28:56 ended on a good spot. You can be a bit of a grudge holder. You know, we got there. It takes a while. But it's, you know, You dismissed about 30, 40, 50% of what I said. And yet, we closed. We disagree so well, I feel like. We hugged at the end of dinner. We arrived home in a good mood.
Starting point is 00:29:15 It's a model for America right here. That's a good way to put it. This show is, and this segment was. Well, more so this segment. But sure. But sure. Even on the way out, it's got to be snarking. Hey, got a Costco greeter against the king of snark.
Starting point is 00:29:27 You choose America who you like, because I know I've made my choice. Can you just hear? Somebody walks in? Nice sweater. It'd be... Actually, we should film it. This would be amazing. Colin is a greeter. Let's not go there.

So how did we actually come up with a name Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it. Well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band.
Starting point is 00:30:26 Before Jonas Brothers was... This is how you guys remember it going to be. down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, where people could call in and say, Hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Starting point is 00:34:16 J-MAC having to sit through that clat stuff. I know you're raring to go. J-Mack, without further ado with the news. No, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line news. We're contractually obligated to talk about Russell Wilson since everybody. loves him. He's one of your favorite quarterbacks. Yes. Remember when people were doubting Tomlin going to Wilson from... Oh, everybody. Big Ben, everybody was. Russell Wilson, 10 touchdowns, three interceptions.
Starting point is 00:34:43 The Steelers are five and one since the move. Here's Tomlin on his quarterback. I don't know. You know, he's a football guy. You know, he loves football. He likes to work. I think that if you have that general approach, this is probably an easy train to get on.
Starting point is 00:35:02 because that's my tenor, that's our tenor. We love football. We like to work at it. Have you seen the new HBO Hard Knocks with Tomlin? I have not, no. Do I need to do you? I didn't see it last night. The staff said this morning, Tomlin comes across as very strong, very well-equipped, really impressive. You know, because he's running the show, which we talked about, you and I both talked about, Russ doesn't have to be a savior.
Starting point is 00:35:27 Russ just has to fit into this really good program. In Denver, Russ is like, hey, save us. And it didn't work. I mean, Aaron Rogers Jet, save us. It doesn't work. Stafford wasn't asked to save the franchise. They've just been to a Super Bowl. Brady goes to Tampa.
Starting point is 00:35:43 He was asked to elevate a team that was 500 with James Winston throwing 30 picks. So what's interesting is Russ goes to this place that drafts develops. It's tough. They win. They go to the playoffs. And he's like, hey, can you just elevate the offense? And apparently the HBO show, Tomlin's very four. formidable in it.
Starting point is 00:36:01 Not a surprise. So have we said enough good stuff about Russ? Can I question? No, why you don't like? Okay. No, it's not that I don't like it. Remember, people said I look a little like Russell Wilson. I don't, whatever.
Starting point is 00:36:12 Colin, this is a six game sample size. Six. If you remember last year, Joe Flacco came off the sofa. He was raking leaves with his kids. And he was starting like three weeks later. And he went on fire and the Browns were excellent down the stretch. And everybody got excited about Flacco. We know what he is.
Starting point is 00:36:28 Is this just a small sample size? of Russ cooking, right? Right. And he's going to come back down to Earth here later in the season. Do you believe that? No. I think Russell is much closer to his prime than Flacco was. And I don't think Russell's in his prime,
Starting point is 00:36:43 but I think Russell is 79%, 81% of his prime. Aaron Rogers is about 38% of his prime. Flacco is about 28%. Russ is closer to 75% of his prime. He's not quite as elusive. I still think he throws the exact same velocity and accuracy. see he's always thrown. He's just, he's, he was closer to Kyler Murray seven years ago. He's not quite as elusive, but he still moves well. And he, I still, I think he, he also is a
Starting point is 00:37:11 off-season grinder, so he's aging, I think, gracefully. If you take out the Hackett year and you go Seattle, Sean Payton, Denver to this, he's a hundred passerating guy. That's what he is. I mean, listen, it's one data point, passerating. Well, it's kind of the big one. Is it? Listen, again, Russ has been excellent. There's no denying it. How do you go from being total garbage two years ago with Hackett? Well, because Hackett doesn't know what he's doing.
Starting point is 00:37:40 I mean, he got demoted as a coordinator in New York. It's fair. And then last year, he put up pretty good stats with Peyton. Actually, his stats are, you know, kind of comparable to what he's done this year. That's right. But it just, you know, salary-wise. He was A in his prime. He's B-plus now.
Starting point is 00:37:55 Do you think he's got, like, his own office and all this stuff that he had? No, no. Which I didn't love that, but it wasn't the end of the world. So he has changed who he is. It's not that he's changed when he went to Denver. He was viewed as a little bit of the savior, and I think they over-indulged him. I don't think it means he can't be humble and grateful. It just, listen, it just happens.
Starting point is 00:38:18 I've seen it in my business, any business. They coddled him for a year. And then Sean came in and said, this is nonsense. Hang out with the players. And that didn't. But by the way, he did. He and Peyton were never going to work because they're both offensive guys with a world view of offense. Tomlin Pete Carroll can work.
Starting point is 00:38:36 They're defensive guys and they're going to let Russ do his thing. Whereas Peyton's like has a strong view of offense and this is how he views it. That's why Bow Nix as a rookie comes in and Sean's like, this is how you win at this level. And Bo Nix is like, yeah, okay, coach. Whereas Russ was established and had been to Super Bowls and had a little bit of a... He also rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Seattle, come on. We heard.
Starting point is 00:39:00 I know. When he was at rock bottom with hacking, I admit, I admit. The stories were out there from all the former players. I get it. I'm not denying those. So is it possible that someone can change to the level he's changed? Because I'm telling you right now, if they go pay him $40 million a year,
Starting point is 00:39:14 is he going to turn into the old Russ who's like, hey, I don't know why. I don't want you guys to know where I live, but I'm having a party. You remember that story? We heard crazy stuff. I got a little. Can someone change that dramatically in the span of two years at the end? I don't think he changed. I think it's very possible for people in their 30s to sometimes you sign a new deal, you get a new
Starting point is 00:39:37 Maserati, I think it people change, but I think you always come back to your values, sort of your moral fiber, and I think Russ at his core is a good guy. I know people, I would agree with you. I know people are hearing this saying, Jay Mack, you're a hater. I like Russell Wilson. I'm just pushing back because that's what I do well. You know, the show works well when I push back. Well, okay.
Starting point is 00:39:58 Next up, the Chief's tackle situation has been a nightmare. It's a mess. In August, Colin, the kid from BYU's been a turnstile. And the other dude, Morris, oh my gosh, he's pathetic. So they have acquired DJ Humphreys. Is he supposed to be really good? Recently. So I was just digging into it.
Starting point is 00:40:14 We'll get to that after we hear the audience. I've heard of him. I don't know, is he a high-rated tackle? Casey, yeah, we'll talk about it. Casey expects him to play this week, possibly start. Here's Mahomes on his new guy. I think more than eight-day men, he's going to get him comfortable. I mean, he has to get comfortable within the offense.
Starting point is 00:40:29 He has to be comfortable physically. I mean, coming back from injury and getting those reps and stuff like that without having practice and training camp. And he's doing that, man. He's a truest pro. He's not only working himself back in the shape, but he's helping other guys as well. And so whenever he's ready, he'll have opportunities to go out there. But until then, we're going to let these guys roll, and we have full belief that the guys that are out there going to make it happen. I kind of like the Chiefs in this spot.
Starting point is 00:40:56 At home, Sunday night. Chargers are so banged up. No, J.K. Dobbins, and did you see, McConkey may not go? But, he's all their offense. Anyways, let's get to DJ Humphreys. So last week, Mahomes was sacked five times. Remember that on Thanksgiving? What's his name?
Starting point is 00:41:14 Crosby was just annihilating the left tackle. So they're going to start Humphreys. He's a former first-round pick. He made a Pro Bowl. He tore his ACL last year. The Cardinals cut him to save like $15,000. that. But this is the one stat that jumped out as a potential huge win. He was a
Starting point is 00:41:30 four-time team captain in Arizona. He was beloved in the locker room. When he was cut, Kyler Murray shouted him out. And the chiefs have done a great job to find transitional pieces. They do this very, very well. Ju-Jew Smith-Schuster. In Pittsburgh, they're done with him. He goes.
Starting point is 00:41:46 He's productive. They let him go. New England can't do anything with him. They bring him back. They've done a very good job. I mean, Kareem Hunt was done. Now he's back. I mean, I was totally. So, I mean, I can't Kansas City does a really good job of inside the league scouting and finding guys that fit their culture. And I guarantee you, I didn't know that captain thing. Humphreys, that's a good fit for them. He's like a leader.
Starting point is 00:42:08 Like he's a grown-up. Those guys are mature. And if you remember their Super Bowl loss when it was Tampa Bay's guys just crushed them off the edge. Mahomes running for his life, they cannot have a repeat of that. You mentioned Chargers chief. So the line is four. Chargers played them real tough at SO-5. I think, but I think it comes down to this, what you pointed out.
Starting point is 00:42:28 This is one of my favorite picks of the week, Kansas City. The Chargers, sometimes in football it's just a bad spot. This is a bad spot for the Chargers. I thought that last week. Because the Raiders, so Kansas City plays poorly in wins. Okay, so they're coming off a game in which they're like, they're going to be motivated. They almost lost to the Raiders. I think they'll play very well.
Starting point is 00:42:47 So they haven't covered a spread, I believe, in six weeks, six games, last six eight, and they're just not covering at all? Do you think they can cover four? they can't get separation, Colin. And the Chargers run defense pretty good. I know Bijan had 100, but there was no major explosive runs. I don't know how the Chargers generate. Offense, that's the question.
Starting point is 00:43:04 That feels like an hundred. It feels like 2317. Is Quentin Johnston going to catch passes this time? I was at the Ravens game. I had three drops. Oh, my gosh. Anyway, final story is Jordan Love. So remember he had that eight game stretch with at least one interception?
Starting point is 00:43:18 Yeah. Well, he's cleaned it up. No turnovers the last two games. Packers 2 in those games. and they've won handily, obviously massive game tomorrow night. Packers Lions. Best Thursday game maybe ever. I think you already invited me to go out for drinks to watch this one, but I haven't responded to you yet.
Starting point is 00:43:36 That was a joke. Hands in town. Oh, the white's, oh, exciting. Who you got in this one? Jordan Love or Jared Gondon? Well, it's six. I love the Packers. If it got to three, it's a stay away.
Starting point is 00:43:48 At three and a half, Green Bay plus three and a half, I would take the Packers. At six, I thought, you call it the look-ahead line. At six, I thought it was an insane number. I just looked at the Lions injury report. Three defensive linemen, including two starters, have not practiced this week. Probably not a good sign. This feels like a Josh Jacobs 25 kind of carry game. Even the backup, I think his name's Wilson.
Starting point is 00:44:12 This is going to be a tough one. Now, the Packers' defense, O'Collin is not very good. Jire Alexander hasn't played in a minute. High-scoring game, low-scoring? What's a league? High-scoring. I think 28-27. Good football game.
Starting point is 00:44:28 I'm taking the points. Okay, so you'll take the three. Last team with the ball wins. Field goal wins it. Walk off field goal win for one of the teams, 28, 27. Who's more pressure on the lions, right? They're holding off the Eagles, bears. And you sweep the pack.
Starting point is 00:44:43 You got, you know, you're in clear. You don't want a young Green Bay team, not at their peak, beating you at your peak. That's not at your place. Not good. J. Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lye News.

Starting point is 00:50:27 and kind of, I guess you can say, more influence on his terms. May it be a good way to say it. Here's the thing. Jerry Jones is 82. There may be part of them that doesn't want to start from scratch again. That's part of it. Secondly, McCarthy can go, well, Micah and Dad,
Starting point is 00:50:47 got hurt. And they play the Bengals and the Panthers next, and the Cowboys have five wins. What if they end up, you know, what if they end up with seven, eight wins? McCarthy's like, can you imagine if I had Dak and Michael Parsons? We're an 11-win team. So I don't think they stack up with the best teams in football. I don't think they're relatively close to Green Bay, Detroit, Philadelphia. And I think one more draft, they're not going to be close to the Rams.
Starting point is 00:51:12 I don't think they're Buffalo, Baltimore, Kansas City. I don't think they're as good as Houston. So I don't think they're close. But I also think Jerry Jones could have a little bit of guilt because Derek Henry flourishing in Baltimore, they could have had last year and this year for $8 million bucks and Jerry passed on him. And you look at it now and Jerry Jones is thinking,
Starting point is 00:51:34 you get a lot of criticism for that. So I think there's a lot of things. I think Jerry's 82. Jerry's a little guilty what he handed McCarthy. McCarthy can point to Dak and Micah injuries. I had said before the season, I thought the Cowboys this year would be the start of a decade-long regression. A lot of it tied to DAC being massively overpaid.
Starting point is 00:51:54 It's an aging roster, an aging owner, an overpaid quarterback. It's all happening, and it all happens very fast in this league. So you saw it with San Francisco. Super Bowl to What a Mess. Dallas. Twelve wins to What a Mess. New England. Dynasty to Mac Jones is the future.
Starting point is 00:52:13 So this is a cruel league because you're getting tacked. And a lot of guys get hurt and Jack gets hurt and Micah gets hurt and all of a sudden you're one of the worst teams in the league. But now they're starting to stockpile wins with Cincinnati and Carolina coming up and they may get to seven wins. And Jerry's 82 and it's like he's guilty about not giving Mike McCarthy much of a roster to work with and he doesn't want to start over. So I think you have to consider it. It's weird. You get into these big brands like the Lakers and the Cowboys and they're incredibly cautious. You'd think they're the, you know, like, oh, they take big swings, but the money is so big.
Starting point is 00:52:52 There's so much to lose. DAC at least makes you competent. You can win nine, ten games with DAC. The people that take big swings are the Houston Texans. Or like, if you, like Washington, we're clearing everybody out. Well, they've got nothing to lose. Dallas has a lot to lose. They've been winning a lot of games.
Starting point is 00:53:11 They're on television. The Lakers have a lot to lose. Let's go hire a friend of the late Kobe Bryant to be our general managers. Let's keep it all in-house. So I thought they were going to fire Mike McCarthy two or three weeks ago. They beat Cincinnati and Carolina. I'm not so sure. I mean, Dak wants him.
