Starting point is 00:00:12 We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. We get to ask other people questions because we're sick and tired of being asked questions. Well, sick and tired is a strong way to put it. But, you know, tired and sick. Tired and sick.
Starting point is 00:00:26 Listen to Hey, Jonas, on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you. you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the ice.

Joel Clatt last hour is going to join us.
Starting point is 00:03:20 I was just telling J. Mack, I don't have an addictive personality. But I don't have a coffee maker. I have an espresso machine, and I'm not a latte guy because I don't like any milk. And so on Christmas, nothing's open. I won't be able to have a coffee, and I'm freaking out. I'm going to go by a coffee maker just so I can have coffee on Christmas. Because it's the only thing in my life that I have to have. I have three coffees a day.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Three? I just listen to a study. And it adds like eight years to your life. Why don't you open it up to the social media guys and ask Joey Bag of Donuts on Twitter what he thinks about your coffee addiction? Since you value his opinion on the NBA so much, you should ask him about coffee. I mean, these guys know everything. Have you ever walked by a restaurant and it says under new ownership? and you walk by a restaurant and you're like,
Starting point is 00:04:08 you know, I didn't like that restaurant, but I'm going to give it a shot. I do that all the time. And it's a place that's frustrated you. It could be a dry cleaner. It could be a restaurant. And you used to like it, but it got sideways. Why?
Starting point is 00:04:23 Because the consumers want to be entertained and we want to be fed and we want to try new stuff. You just can't be rigid. And so I always, whenever I see a restaurant like I used to like it, and now they have a new owner. and I'm like, oh, I want to try it. I'm excited. It's like baseball.
Starting point is 00:04:38 And I'm done with it. And all of a sudden, literally the first year they sped the game up. Attendance and ratings 10%. And by the way, I think they even sped it up more this year. The ratings went up again in Fox Set Records. The audience wants to love your product. If it fails, don't blame the audience. Blame yourself.
Starting point is 00:04:57 If my ratings tomorrow stink, it's not the audience. It's me. I would say the cup final rating was awful because this guy, name LeBron James was not playing in it. Well, you're still going to rely on LeBron? What is he 16? Well, that's a legitimate issue. I don't think these guys seeming out because of three.
Starting point is 00:05:13 Let me ask you. Do you have a league or a player? You had the LeBron Curry thing that's phasing out. And, you know, the Americans. It's been phasing for five years. It's nice if you have, the NFL loses Breeze, Manning, and Brady. Ratings are up because they have a league, not a player. Well, it's a different sport.
Starting point is 00:05:29 And the NBA has their European stars are coming over. The Americans are kind of sort of rejecting Wemby and Lerner. and Janice. They don't love them the way they do American basketball players. It's not the end of the world. League will be fine. The league's going to be fine. It's broadcast partners.
Starting point is 00:05:46 It's broadcast partners. What do we care about those guys? We're not one of them. That's true. Okay. Greg CoSell, 45 years, NFL films joining us live. All right. So I watched the Eagles and Steelers.
Starting point is 00:06:01 And what was funny is Philadelphia is better, but it was 17 to 13. and the Steelers couldn't even move the ball. And if Najee Harris doesn't fumble, I'm like, how is Pittsburgh staying in this game without George Pickens? So I looked at Pittsburgh, and now Pittsburgh is going to face Baltimore. And it's funny, as I watch the Steelers in a weird way before the Najee Harris fumble, I'm like, I can't believe that they're in this game in Philadelphia, and they're not moving the ball.
Starting point is 00:06:31 When you watch the film of Eagles Steelers, what are two or three? three things that jumped out to you? Well, what really jumped out to me, to be honest with you, was the Eagles' offense. And I know they didn't necessarily just put a ton of points on the board, but the Steelers do have a good defense. But I thought what the Eagles are doing with their coaching staff and with Jalen Hertz is really, really good.
Starting point is 00:06:53 It's a lot of no huddle. Hertz is really good at the line of scrimmage. He understands what he's seeing. He gets them in the right play. And this week, they added a ton of no huddle. and empty. So it's no huddle and empty is what they do. So both those things,
Starting point is 00:07:11 what that does is it defines the defense before the snap of the ball, the no huddle and the empty. And Hurtz this week was as decisive as he has been all season. The ball came out. He had 37 dropbacks, Colin, and only five of them did he move.
Starting point is 00:07:27 He was playing from the pocket. The ball was coming out. He was hitting his receivers. He looked as good as he's looked all season long. I think you'll continue to see them do that. And I think that's sustainable for this reason. They always have the big old line and the power run game to fall back on. Yes. But they didn't have that to fall back on. And it's not falling back. It's actually their foundation. But if they didn't have that, I'm not sure they could play that way, but they always can line up and give the ball to Barclay. But I thought
Starting point is 00:07:55 they did a great job, a perfect marriage of coaching and hurts his traits. And it worked really well. And he looked really good. So I want to talk Steelers because they're facing. the Ravens. Now, Pittsburgh has just really dominated this series. You were never as big a fan of Russell Wilson as I was, and many of the fans are.
Starting point is 00:08:18 Now, when you watch that, they didn't do anything in the first half, they feel very George Pickens dependent. Where are you on Russ right now? Do you see a pretty low ceiling here with this offense? I mean, I think it's a specific kind of offense. I think they need the run game to be effective. I think they need the vertical game.
Starting point is 00:08:36 to be a factor because Russell Wilson still throws a very good deep ball. You know, I think I don't know how they coach him and I don't know what they ask him to do, but there's been a number of games this year where I've noticed that he immediately threw the checkdown and almost not even waiting to see the routes develop, which leads me to wonder if maybe that's the way they coach them. They say, hey, look, if you see a play that gains eight yards, take it. Let's not worry about anything else. Take those eight yards.
Starting point is 00:09:04 Let's stay on schedule. let's stay ahead of the sticks. Let's control the pace and tempo of the game. We've got a really good defense. Hey, we'll take a shot here and there. We have a back who's in Najee Harris, who's basically a grinder, not a big playback. So if we can stay ahead of the sticks, we can control the pace and tempo of games. I think that's the way they want to play on offense. Okay, so Denver tonight plays the Chargers. I tend to bet against young rookie quarterbacks on these short weeks. I think it's really tough. And so I'll take Herbert tonight.
Starting point is 00:09:37 They're at home. I just think this is a good spot for Justin, and I think it's a tough spot. You know, I watched Denver last week, and they got pushed around for two hours, and then they kind of rebounded. I think we all realize these teams are a year away, a draft away. Maybe Bow Nix needs 15 more starts. When you look at the Chargers and Broncos tonight, if I said to you, one of them is cool. closer to the Super Bowl bubble, that five or six-team bubble. Is there a team chargers or Broncos when they play tonight that you look at and you think
Starting point is 00:10:13 they may be closer than the other? You like their trajectory more. I mean, that's a tough question. You know, I think Knicks will continue to get better. He's been, for the most part, pretty stable, pretty consistent as a rookie quarterback. He's clearly gotten better as the season's gone on. is he going to have some bad moments? Absolutely. That's just the nature of the NFL.
Starting point is 00:10:38 You know, I think for tonight's game, I think that one thing that might concern me, we've seen Justin Herbert be under a lot of pressure lately, and we know he's hurt, and we know he always plays because that's who he is. But even though the Broncos have not played great quarterbacks in recent weeks, they do have a good defense. They've got a lot of speed. They've got a lot of movement.
Starting point is 00:10:59 Their secondary is strong. You know, there are certain players. in this league who no one knows but are really important players to the team they're on. And PJ Locke is a safety for the Broncos who was hurt and is now back. And they've got a really good safety tandem with PJ Locke and Brandon Jones. And they've got two really good edge players in Jonathan Cooper and Nick Benito. And there's been some protection issues with the Chargers. And I'm curious to see how that plays out tonight.
Starting point is 00:11:27 Okay. You know, I've watched the Packers and the Eagles with their athletic quarterback, say, you know what, we're going to throw it a little less, we're going to lean into the run game. And I think it's been highly effective. Miami's got a quarterback with an injury history. He's not a great athlete like a hurts or a love. But when I watch Miami,
Starting point is 00:11:46 I just don't trust them against good teams. I have four straight games of Tua throwing it over 40 times. I watch Miami. They feel too finesse, two track meat. I just, I, Mike McDaniel's clever. But Greg, every single. time I watch them, I'm like, there's no there there. They're pretty. They're fun. I, what do you, when you look at the offense, what do you see?
Starting point is 00:12:14 And I'm just going to give you my interpretation of the tape. I'm not suggesting I know any more than Mike McDaniel does. He certainly knows more than I do. But my interpretation, watching their offense is I feel like they throw the ball too much. Two is average in the games he has started this year, Colin, he's averaging 40 dropbacks per game. Now, to me, Given that he's a pocket quarterback and not a creator, to me, that's an awful lot, and that's too much for a couple of reasons. Number one, I don't think their offensive line is good enough to handle that. Secondly, they've kind of moved away from having a sort of foundational, conventional, run game. Everything to me, when I watch them, is geared toward getting on the perimeter with their speed,
Starting point is 00:12:54 and there's no question they have a lot of speed. But I always feel like that they should line up and run the ball. Think about the Rams. We know how good they can be in the past game, but they line up and they give the ball to Kairn Williams, who, by the way, is not a top two or three back in the league in terms of physical traits, but they line up and they run the ball and they generate and sustain offense. And I feel like that the dolphins need to line up and run the ball, but one can make the argument they don't really have that kind of back.
Starting point is 00:13:22 So it'll be interesting to see what they do this offseason. But to me, 40 dropbacks a game for Tua, who's a pure timing and rhythm player. That's what he is. and he's really good at it, but that's what he is. That, to me, is too many dropbacks. Okay, before I get to the Buffalo Bills a lot, because I think right now there's an argument, Philly and Buffalo are the two best teams.
Starting point is 00:13:43 I want to talk about Michael Pennix. So this doesn't happen very often. But last year's quarterback class was so good. Caleb, as you've noted, is a raw, unique talent. Jaden works, Bow's working. McCarthy had a very good preseason. Drake Mays got much better. I don't know if he's getting great coaching.
Starting point is 00:14:03 I think he's gotten much better. And then there's Michael Pennix. So I like Penix. I thought Pennix was a bigger, stronger Tua. That's what I looked at him. A bigger, stronger, too. So he's going to play now for Atlanta. And they still are only one back at Tampa,
Starting point is 00:14:19 and they beat him two times now. So if they get tied, they've got to win all three games. Sure. What should we expect? Let's go back to your, you're very good at this. What did you see coming into the league? strength, weakness, Penix. What are we going to see?
Starting point is 00:14:33 Yeah, I like Michael Penning's coming out. But, you know, the Tua comparison is very interesting because he is a timing-rhythm player, and that's what he did in college under Ryan Grubb, who's now the coordinator for the Seahawks. But Tua, to me, the strength of his, excuse me, Penix, the strength of his game is the fact that he would drop back, get the ball out.
Starting point is 00:14:53 And he had really good ball location. He was pretty consistent with it. Yes. He knew where to go with the ball. you know he does have a little bit of a low delivery at times and we'll see how that plays out once he becomes a starter but for the most part i thought that pennix was a really good prospect now he's not immobile but he's going to be at his core a pocket play yes but the difference is with it the difference is and you can see the evaluation the difference is and this is just part of it obviously as you
Starting point is 00:15:21 know because i send you a lot of my evaluations you know how detail they are but but is there a running football team. They run over 60% with Bijan on first down, and they're playing the Giants this week, and they're going to run the ball. So barring anything strange happening in this game, Pennix is not going to have 40 dropbacks. They'd be thrilled, in my opinion, this week, playing the Giants if Pennix goes, you know, 18 for 26 for 205 yards in a touchdown and doesn't turn it over. I don't think that this is necessarily a Michael Pennix game in the way they're going to approach it. They've got Robinson, they've got Al Jir, they're a running
Starting point is 00:15:59 football team, and Bijon Robinson for whatever reason does not get talked about enough because he is truly a high-level traits back in this league. Okay, let's talk about a Super Bowl team potentially in Buffalo. Sean McDermott's a very capable coach. He's a defensive-minded guy, he's got a lot of toughness
Starting point is 00:16:15 and grit, and they draft well. Their defense right now, Matt Stafford, it was a seven-on-seven drill, and I'm watching Detroit, and Detroit's doing in that second half, kind of whatever they want to do. What is wrong with Buffalo's defense? Yeah, that's a concern.
Starting point is 00:16:34 They're not really generating pass rush pressure with their down four, and they're not necessarily a big blitz team. They started to blitz a little more in the second half this week against Detroit, because they had to. They were not generating any pressure, and they predominantly play zone coverage, and they were missing some players on the back end due to injury. they were missing both safeties in this game, both of their starting safeties.
Starting point is 00:16:58 And then they had to go to safety even beyond that due to injury. And they were missing Rasul Douglas, one of their corners. So they're lacking people right now. But it starts with, if you're going to play zone, think of it this way. If you're going to play zone and you're only going to rush four, you need your four-man D-line pass rush to be a factor. It's not about sacks, but you need to speed up the quarterback. And they've been unable to do that.
Starting point is 00:17:23 and for two weeks their zone coverage has really, really struggled. Now, we know Josh Allen's been phenomenal, but you can't, when you get to the big games and the players, you're not going to put up 45 every week. That's not going to happen. You have been a huge fan. In fact, back in 2021, you had a column. You said Josh was the most intriguing quarterback you had watched in 45 years of watching film. You said the ball coming out of his hands is otherworldly.
Starting point is 00:17:50 I said I thought the most talented quarterback I ever saw my life was John Selle. Elway. And I said a couple of weeks ago, Josh Allen makes Elway look small and lumbering. He's just, it just doesn't, again, you sent me out of college, you're like, you and Mel Kuiper were both like, if this thing
Starting point is 00:18:09 works, it's going to be, I mean, I watched them at Wyoming, he was reckless and wild. Is he more talented than Mahomes, but Mahomes has the trophy? Is he more talented? In terms of pure physical traits, yes. Don't forget, he's 6.5, 240. That's a trait. It's funny because in that column I wrote in 2021 when I was actually Peter King and asked me to write his column in the summer, and I did. And it was 2021. So he hadn't really become Josh Allen yet in a strict way. And I said that he was the most physically gifted quarterback in the league and maybe one of the most physically gifted I'd seen, which was different at the time from saying he was the best. But of course, that's how people took it. But I wasn't. saying that. Now, you can always debate whether or the guy's the best or not. Those are fun debates. But, you know, you're dealing with a guy that's 6, 5, 240 pounds. That is a big, big man.
Starting point is 00:19:02 I've been fortunate enough to stand next to him and watch him throw a ball where I was literally standing right next to him, and it just comes out of his hand differently, Colin. I mean, this guy's a little different animal. So, again, we'll see what happens. If their defense doesn't get short up, well, you know, that could be a big problem. It's tough to put up 40, 45 when you get to the playoffs. You know, things are different. We'll see, but he is really playing at a high level. And I think one of the most important things to me, we know he can make those special plays. We know that. He could always do that. I think he's playing with a far better sense of poise and rhythm from the pocket than he ever has, and that's absolutely critical. So the play,
Starting point is 00:19:42 the 33-yard is your play of the week. Fire away. Yeah. Yeah. Now, this play was 33 yards to Ty Johnson. It was the second play of the game. So let's take a look at it. And the fact that it was the second play of the game means that it was game planned. So that's the important point here. This was game plan. They were playing against a lion's defense that was lacking starting players. So they were playing backups. So particularly at the linebacker position. So what they did on the second play of the game is they lined up in what we call 12 personnel, meaning they had one back and two tight ends. And they knew based on that what they would. get from the defense. You're going to see Alan. He's in the gun. And by the way, they do put him
Starting point is 00:20:24 under center a decent amount. But there's two stacked backers here, and they're both backup players, by the way. And they knew that. So what they wanted to do here, this was the design of the play. They wanted Ty Johnson the back to work against Alexander, a linebacker, who's only been there for a couple of weeks. So how did they create this matchup? Well, they took Shakir, and they would put him in what we call orbit motion. And that's the caused a switch in the coverage. You can see that they changed coverage, they moved inside. So now you have Cooper matched on Arnold, and you're going to have Branch who's going to run with Shakir moving inside. So that's what they knew would happen. Those two things were all part of the plan.
Starting point is 00:21:07 And don't forget, when something's the second play of the game, they know this is going to happen. And then they took the center and they actually pulled him, even though it's a pass play. And that has an impact on Alexander because now that's eye candy. He's looking inside and he's seeing the center pull, so he's waiting there. So now you're seeing how this whole thing is going to develop. You're going to get Cooper running against Arnold on the outside. He's going to remove him. He's going to lift him by running vertically.
Starting point is 00:21:37 And then what do you get? You get Johnson who worked through the line of scrimmage, and he's working against the linebacker Alexander, the matchup that they wanted, creating all that space with the mechanics of the play, and you get the back on the linebacker one-on-one. And Colin, this is what I was talking about with throwing the ball from the pocket.
Starting point is 00:21:55 This is a beautiful throw. It's a scheme to play, second play of the game. You couldn't place this ball any better. You couldn't hand it to him any better than that throw. And I think that's the area where Josh Allen has so significantly improved is he makes these throws now, whereas when he first came in the league, as you and I know, he would throw that ball 10 yards over the receiver's head.
Starting point is 00:22:17 Now he makes those throws from the pocket. Greg CoSell, 45 years NFL films. As always, Greg, happy holidays, good seeing you. Same to you, Colin. Thanks so much. Joel Clatt, joining us next hour. Very excited. We got game. We have big bets at the end of this hour.
Starting point is 00:22:34 Clemson at Texas. Indiana at Notre Dame Friday. That's interesting. When you have a really good coach, pro or college, and you give them extra time. Extra times not even. You give Matt Iber flus a month, what does it mean?
Starting point is 00:22:51 If you gave Nick Saban in college an extra month, what does it mean? So it's going to be, it's really interesting. Dabo Sweeney against Sark, that is fiery. By the way, did you see that the Notre Dame coach got a nice little extension this week, Marcus Freeman?
Starting point is 00:23:07 Because of the rumors he was going to Chicago. Well, I might have started on this show. Well, you would have. Yeah. Listen, that's a really good coach. And like you said, four weeks to prepare. I think it's four weeks, right, to prepare for this game? Well, he's a no-nonsense guy.
Starting point is 00:23:20 They love to run the ball, and they hit and they tackle. Notre Dame looks like their coach by a very energetic young defensive coach. They play smart, power football. They run it. They might have, after Gentie, the best running back in the country. I think so. There is some concern in the secondary, but I like the Irish here Friday. This could be one of the best weekends of the year.
Starting point is 00:23:41 Friday Saturday. Friday, Saturday, because I get college and pro. Yeah. I don't know what to make of the NFL slate. We'll eventually get to it, but there's not a lot of games that jump out at me on Sunday. I like the Chargers tonight. Rookie quarterbacks on a short week is trouble. I think they're 15 and 25 on these Thursday games.
Starting point is 00:24:02 Could you pull in stats here. I think rookie quarterbacks on Thursday. It's hard. And also, division rival games are close and ugly anyway. Anyway, and the Chargers just got blown out. So anytime a good coach and a good quarterback get blown out, they almost always circle the wagons. Without J.K. Dobbins, they've scored 17 points three straight games,
Starting point is 00:24:22 and they've been non-relly-competitive in the second. It's just, it doesn't look good. They need a running back bad. Ashton Genty. How about that? Boise State to the Chargers? Your Heisman guy? Okay.
Starting point is 00:24:34 All right. One more Herd? The Herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the I-Hard Radio app. Search heard to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Hey, it's Steve Kavino. And I'm Rich Davis. And together we're Kavino and Rich on Fox Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:24:50 You can catch us weekdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Eastern, 2 to 4 Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and of course the IHeart Radio app. Why should you listen to Kavino and Rich? Take your phone calls, chop it up as they say. I'd say the most interactive show on Fox Sports Radio. Maybe the most
Starting point is 00:25:25 interactive show on Planet Earth. Be sure to check out Covino & Rich live on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeart Radio app from 5 to 7 p.m. Eastern, 2 to 4 Pacific. And if you miss any of the live show, just search Covino and Rich, wherever you get your podcast and of course on social media. That's Coveino and Rich. Hey, it's us, the Jonas Brothers, and guess what? We have some big news. What's the news, new? Huge news.
Starting point is 00:25:46 We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas. We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to a... We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name, Hey Jonas, guys?
Starting point is 00:26:04 I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it. And we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers was... This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes.
Starting point is 00:26:19 I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast where people could call in and say, Hey Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title
Starting point is 00:26:30 for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy,
Starting point is 00:26:44 not quite on Humor Me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, S&L's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:27:05 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get. your podcasts. Hey, I'm Joe Dono. You might know me as that loud guy who yells out, help on the internet. Help! Somebody! Please! But there's so much more to me than me. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian, and recently, I've become quite the helper myself. And on my new podcast, Hope from a Hypocrite, I'll be changing lives, helping people in need with my sage advice and thoughtful solutions. Sike, I'm a comedian. I'm not qualified to give good advice. Join me in my comedian. Join me in my and friends as we riff rant and recommend some of the most legally dubious advice known to man.
Starting point is 00:27:46 If I'm calling you, even if you're on your phone, let it ring twice. One ring is too scary. Oh, cream a chicken suit. Hey, cream. Cream a chicken suit. This is Help from a Hypocrite, the worst advice from the dumbest people you know. Listen to Help from a Hypocrat as part of the Mike Coutura podcast network available on the IHart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. What's up, fam, it's Isaiah Thomas.
Starting point is 00:28:13 And I'm C.J. Toledano and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't
Starting point is 00:28:40 have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court licking his fingers while he got the ball. Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Starting point is 00:29:06 Oh, yeah. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Will Ferrell's Big Money Players and IHeart Podcasts presents Soccer Moms. So I'm Leanne. Yeah. This is my best friend Janet. Hey.
Starting point is 00:29:22 And we have been joined at the Hips since high school. Absolutely. Now a redacted amount of years later, we're still joined at the hip. Just a little bit bigger hips. Wider. This is a podcast. We're recording it as we tailgate our youth soccer games in the back of my Honda Odyssey. With all the snacks and drinks.
Starting point is 00:29:38 Sidebar. Why did you get hard? seltzer instead of beer. Oh, they had a bogo. Well, then you got it. Do you want a white color or something here? Just a again. What are y'all doing?
Starting point is 00:29:46 Microphones? Are you making a rap album? Oh, I would. Come on. Can you move? I would buy it. Cuts through the defense like a hot knife through sponge cake.
Starting point is 00:29:57 That sounds delicious. Oh, you're lucky. I'm not a drug addict. You're lucky. I'm not an alcoholic. You are. I'm not a killer. I love this team, and I'm really trying to be
Starting point is 00:30:07 a figure in their lives that they can rely on. Oh. Oh. Listen to soccer moms on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. You know, it would be interesting. I was listening to Caleb Williams talk yesterday, and he's frustrated. But it's funny. Like when you watch certain quarterbacks in this league, Mac Jones, Zach Wilson, Desmond Ritter, your eyes tell you that doesn't look right.
Starting point is 00:30:36 But when you watch Justin Herbert or Caleb Williams struggle, you're like, no, it looks right. It's got to be the coach. It's like if you have a movie and there's a bunch of great actors in it and it gets heavily promoted and it has a major studio behind it and it bombs, it's probably a script and director issue, right? Like, that's the problem. You know it should work because you've had success.
Starting point is 00:30:58 And so I think Caleb, I said this, I think he's better than Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield in terms of raw talent and they're both crushing now because of the right fit. I always thought Caleb was more Andrew Luck. not as good out of college, but Andrew Luck, where I thought he would just bulldoze obstacles. Now, I picked the Bears for fourth place, and I picked them to win seven games,
Starting point is 00:31:19 but it has not looked as good as I thought. Now, I'll say this to defend him. He has not thrown an interception since Halloween. Okay. He has got right now, let me look it up, he's got more touchdown passes than Kyler Murray and Justin Herbert. He's got more passing yards than Jalen Hertz. So it doesn't look pretty, but he's not turning it over.
Starting point is 00:31:45 He's throwing for yards. It's just he's got nothing to work with. And the difference is Andrew Luck was winning 11 games, but Andrew Luck's division wasn't nearly as good as this division. This division now is the best division in football. That's why they've got to get the coaching thing right. But Caleb was talking this week about, like, losing really affects him. Losing is one of those things that actually really affects me.
Starting point is 00:32:10 It's tough, but I do have the understanding of where I'm at my career and where I'll be at. And so having that understanding is important for me, myself internally, because internally it's tough. Internally, when tough times happen, you know, just human natures, is to do the opposite of what you're doing. you're doing or what you've been doing or all these different things. So it's the toughest part is fighting yourself. And, you know, especially when when there's tough times. Yeah, I mean, he's, what he's saying is you have to fight the self-doubt. But again, there's encouraging things here.
Starting point is 00:32:51 But between the chaos with the bears and how good this division is, you just can't have hiccups. I mean, you can't have a Hail Mary lose a game. You can't have a block kick, lose a game. You can't have a coaching snafu lose again. They should have three more wins. this team should have three more wins and then you look at him and go, oh, they got seven win team. So it's especially for young quarterbacks. I was just talking tonight, the Broncos
Starting point is 00:33:15 play the Chargers. Rookie quarterbacks on Thursday night football on the road are nine and 25. It is hard when you're a rookie. This is all new stuff. This is all new territory. But if you're a bear fan and you're bummed out,
Starting point is 00:33:30 don't blame him for the Hail Mary. Don't blame him for the block kick. Don't blame him for the coaching snafu against Detroit. This team should have three more wins, and he's got more touchdowns in yards than a Kyler Murray, a Jalen Hertz, a Justin Herbert, and he hasn't thrown a pick since Halloween. So there is stuff there.
Starting point is 00:33:47 You can see the there, there. A lot of these guys, you look at him and you're like, yeah, it just doesn't look like it's going to work. When Justin Herbert was losing as a rookie, I'm like, yeah, that's going to work. They just got to get the right coach. That's how I feel about Chicago. J. Mack with the news. No, no, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:34:02 Turn on the news. This is a good. the herd line news. We haven't talked too much Kyler Murray lately because he has stumbled the last few weeks, but Colin, he had a great moment at a press conference this week talking about the game against the Panthers.
Starting point is 00:34:16 You know, listen, not everybody's built for the cold, okay? Temperatures in Carolina are expected to be 35 on Sunday. Kyler Murray is from Texas, played at A&M in Oklahoma. Here's his answer when asked about playing in 35-degree temps.
Starting point is 00:34:32 No, I mean, I don't, I I've played in cold weather before. It's not, I don't know. How cold is this supposed to be? Like, 35? Yeah. It just hit him that it's going to be 35 initially. He's like, oh, nobody.
Starting point is 00:34:50 Oh. Yeah, it's going to be cold. I don't think it's that big of a deal. 35 degrees I'm fine with. You get down to 13 degrees at Columbus Saturday against Tennessee and Ohio State. 13 degrees? That is bone-chilling.
Starting point is 00:35:06 45 is very cold to play for Poland. Let me just ask you this, Colin. Where are we with Kyler Murray? What do you do if you're Arizona? He's a franchise quarterback. Based on what? Based on leading that team to the playoffs, in a really good division. So he's a franchise quarterback, but Brock Purdy isn't?
Starting point is 00:35:22 No, Brock Purdy is at $30 million a year. Oh, at $4. I'll pay $45 for Kyler because he is a playmaker. Over under in his career, one and a half playoff wins for Kyler Maria. He has zero, by the way. I would say under just because of... He's a franchise quarterback and he's going to win one playoff game in his career? Daniel Jones has one playoff with.
Starting point is 00:35:44 Come on. Well, he's in a really good division with McVeigh and Shanahan. Excuses. Kyle Murray loves. I know that you're boy from UFC. I won't hammer him. Next up, you know, if we didn't get enough cuss words out earlier, how about Brian Callahan, Colin? Oh, no, wait, we're doing Kevin Durand here.
Starting point is 00:36:03 We're doing Kevin Durrano. My bad. But the NBA has announced a new All-Star game format. It's a four-team, three-game one-night tournament. It sounds a little clunky. You want change. You got it, Colin. There's maybe too much change, though.
Starting point is 00:36:18 The winning team in all the games will be the first to score 40 points. I know, I can't follow it either. Very gimmicky. But Kevin Durant was asked about it. Okay. Here you. Here's KD. I hate it.
Starting point is 00:36:29 Absolutely hate it. I hate it. I get terrible. All-Star game, four mass change it. All the four mess, were terrible in my opinion. We should just go back to the East West, like, but just play a game. I think we've been trying to bring that flare back somehow with the All-Star weekend,
Starting point is 00:36:47 but I think we just keep a tradition. We'll see how this one works. You never know I might be wrong. I'm just another guy with another winner, pay if, but we'll see how it works. You know, what they're trying to do, and I'm going to give the NBA and Adam Silver credit. What they're saying is if it's only to 40,
Starting point is 00:37:02 it's short and it's intense. And what they're trying to do is bring back the intensity to the All-Star game. Because now it's just like nobody plays defense. But if you're going to 40, guys are like, dude, it's eight minutes of basketball. So my take is this is all about, and I don't think it's a bad move. It sounds weird. Like the golden it batten baseball sounds weird. So once a game, it's like having a DH.
Starting point is 00:37:27 You get to use Bryce Harper again. And by the way, it's not going to be a game-winning move. most of the time because even a great baseball team loses 50 games. A great baseball team loses 54 games. But this sounds weird, but in the end, they're just saying, hey, how do we make this game more intense?
Starting point is 00:37:45 Because people, fans are losing their attention span. And so I think on its premise, I get to move and kind of like it. Okay. You know, people don't like my NBA takes this week. Whatever. But I'll just say this.
Starting point is 00:37:59 The internet and social media completely changed all these All-Star games. The NFL Pro Bowl is completely irrelevant. I've been saying we should just do like a 40-yard dash or 100-yard deck. Skills competition. Right? MLB All-Star game. I know it's a midsummer classic. Come on. It has no juice. And the NBA All-Star game, everybody's out on it. Nobody wants to play defense.
Starting point is 00:38:18 And I think a lot of that has to do, Colin, with all we care about now, rightfully, is championships. That's all anybody talks about. Legacy titles. Nobody cares if you win an All-Star game. Nobody cares about the regular season. And I don't know how we change that. That's just the way things are now. Like, you could do all this stuff to the NBA All-Star game. Nobody's going to care. It's like, oh, we're only playing a 40.
Starting point is 00:38:40 Like the Elam ending, it had a moment. What the audience does care about, March Madness ratings were up. If something feels special, Caitlin Clark games, even regular season, feel special. Ratings up. Playoffs this year, Fox broke records. Otani, Lindor, Judge, Machado. You also are naming stars. Well, I'm saying. Stars make things special.
Starting point is 00:39:04 Yeah. So what's happening in sports? UFC fights. Their pay-per-view numbers are up. The World Cup, Fox, up. March Madness, up. So what the audience is telling you with the iPhone, we love it when it's special. So to me, NHL regular season, not special.
Starting point is 00:39:24 NBA, especially when everybody plays the same, not special. Baseball's regular season was up, but it doesn't feel. as special. So I think what is happening is the audience is telling you when it's special, we will pour in the NFL. And for the record, college football, these bowl games have been on a downward trend for a decade. They're out now. Okay. Forget the exhibition. Wait till you see the ratings Saturday. For the playoff games, urgency. Because it feels special. So the audience is still consuming. It has to qualify, though, as wow. You can't compare though postseason stuff, March Madness, all that, to regular season. It's just.
Starting point is 00:40:02 just a totally different animal. And like, you know, I get it. People are worked up. I am a purist. I like the old NBA All-Star game format. I like Steph Curry. It's 60 points and uncontested dunks and nasty Zach. I'm not a purist. You and I are opposites. You're very much a traditionalist and a purist, and I am not. I am new stuff, new ways to do things. I mean, I don't want to act like I'm an old fuddy-duddy and I don't like new stuff. But yeah, I don't have a huge problem with the NBA Star game. But again, when you're watching stuff, you have a phone you have a second screen but what here's what happening the NBA All-Star game literally has crashed once again the audience is always right and
Starting point is 00:40:42 they're telling you this is crap it's like the Pro Bowl nobody under any yeah but it didn't used to be like that the All-Star game used to be worth an hour of your time the consumer is telling you this is crap and when the consumer tells you what Adam Silver to his credit is going we're gonna tweak it just listen to the consumer they'll give you all the answers I mean listen they've tried tweaks They did the draft, remember where they had, like, guys drafting, and then someone was the last pick and they were kind of ticked off. Then they tried the Elam ending. Like, they're trying stuff.
Starting point is 00:41:12 You know, I know you don't get along with KD. I like him. KD is funny. No, no, we're fine. I like him. I'm going to go ahead and guess he liked my take on inside the NBA. That's, I'm just going to put that out there. Anyways, let's wrap up with Brian Callahan and the Titans, Colin.
Starting point is 00:41:28 Oh, my. This was the, I think this wins for the, like, midweek press conference. the year. A reporter asked about how fans are calling the Titan soft and Brian Callahan lost it on this reporter. I think, to be honest with, I guess, complete and total, if you want my honest opinion.
Starting point is 00:41:47 These guys are tough, man. They go after it every day. That makes me relatively angry that that would be some presumption. That means you just don't, you know, you don't do anything about it that you don't know what you're talking about, you know what you're looking at. So I don't, I won't stand for, I'm not going to stand for, for anybody calling his football team soft. Yeah, first of all, Tennessee's not soft. They're bad at quarterback.
Starting point is 00:42:09 There's a big difference. I never look at them as soft. I think the Callahan's historically want to play smash-mouth football. Yeah. The Titans have issues. Miami, I'll argue, feels soft. When I watch Miami play against the northern team in cold weather, they come across as very finesse.
Starting point is 00:42:29 I've never thought Tennessee is soft. I think they're quarterback situations. If they can get Darnold, they might be a buy team. I don't know how Darnal will like outside outdoor games. No, I'm sure he's... Indoor games, man. I mean, Jared Gauth looks like one of the best quarterbacks in the league in this. Well, he is.
Starting point is 00:42:44 He's unbelievable. He's going outdoors this weekend in Chicago. I know. What is it? Like 10 degrees in Chicago? I know. Is that why you're not going there this weekend? I'm going there in a couple weekends.
Starting point is 00:42:52 A little chilly in Shattown. One of us is willing to expand his horizons. J. Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Live News. We're making big bets on the college football playoffs next. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app.
Starting point is 00:43:16 Hey, it's us, the Jonas brothers, and guess what? We have some big news. What's the news, huge news? We created our own podcast called, Hey, Jonas. We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts.
Starting point is 00:43:30 Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there. but this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it. Well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band
Starting point is 00:43:49 before Jonas Brothers. This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, people could call in and say, hey Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad

You're lucky I'm not an alcoholic. You are. I'm lucky I'm not a killer. I love this team and I'm really trying to be a figure in their lives that they can rely on.
Starting point is 00:47:44 Oh. Listen to soccer moms on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, welcome back. Big Betts brought to you by Draft King. sports book, the crown is yours. Here we go with our big bets. It's time for big bets. Colin and Jemak make their favorite Big Ten bets of the week. Okay, a lot of lousy weather. I'm going to take Indiana plus seven and a half. I think it's a low-scoring, ugly game with a lot of running. These are very good defenses especially. I like both of these coaching staffs. I think if
Starting point is 00:48:27 You give these coaching staffs time. It's going to be a fairly competitive game. I think Notre Dame's the better team, and Notre Dame will win. But again, we're talking about a first snowy, cold, outdoor. People always talk about the Big Ten weather. The regular season's done by late November. You get one crappy weather game. This is a bad, historically bad weather game.
Starting point is 00:48:48 I think Notre Dame wins, but I would take the hook at seven and a half. Interesting. I am head to head against you, my friend. And I got Notre Dame winning and covering at home. I just know Indiana, when they stepped up in class this year against Michigan and Ohio State, they did not look good. You want to be produced 66-7? Fine. Awesome.
Starting point is 00:49:06 But this is a Notre Dame team, like you said, extra time to prepare for Freeman. Amazing run game. And Colin, I will just say, this is newfound territory. We've never had a playoff game where someone's at home. That's like a big edge. How much of an edge? I don't know. I tried to propose to the staff that we do teasers because I love Notre Dame and a teaser down to win by
Starting point is 00:49:24 I won, but I do think they can cover seven and a half. This ground game, we could be looking at 300 yards on the ground for Notre Dame. Okay, I'm going to take Clemson, Texas, the under 52. I think Texas knows they have a significantly better roster, and they'll be conservative, like they have the last three weeks. I don't think they're going to unveil any of their playbook to let the next couple of teams they play see it. They're in line to face like in Oregon. They're not going to let them see anything.
Starting point is 00:49:49 I think Clemson, number three-ranked scoring defense. I don't think Clemson can win, but I think Clemson can keep it close. I think the pressure is on Texas. They'll come in with a fairly conservative game plan. Close to the vest. We'll beat them. I'll take the under 52. I'm on this game as well.
Starting point is 00:50:07 I do like Texas favor by 12. I know it's a double-digit spread, but I just, Clemson felt like they won their Super Bowl to get into this game beating SMU. They came out awesome and then petered out. SMU went to the up-tempo attack second half. Clemson could not get stops, Colin. I'm looking at some arch manning props once they get released. I think we see some arch packages.
Starting point is 00:50:27 Would not be surprised that Texas drops a 40 burger. This is like a 40 to 13. I don't think highly of Clemson. They have not been good all season. And I'm all in on Texas. I think Texas is live to win the whole thing. Well, I do too. I'm going to take, again, I'm going to take the plus seven and a half in 13-degree weather,
Starting point is 00:50:44 Tennessee to keep it close against Ohio State. I think their defensive line is going to force Ohio State to throw the ball 40 times, and I don't trust Will Howard. And Ohio State didn't trust Will Howard against Michigan. Tennessee has a great run game, led the SEC and rushing, and a great D-line. When you play in crappy weather,
Starting point is 00:51:03 those are really important units and factors. I think Ohio State's better. I think Ohio State's going to win this game, but the pressure is on Ohio State. What if their first series they punt? Tennessee scores takes a lead, and that crowd starts grumbling?
Starting point is 00:51:19 I'm going to take the hook. I like dogs. I think the dogs are going to be competitive in these games. Dogs are barking in December. I'm against you again. Head-to-head. Uh-oh, somebody's in some trouble. I got the Buckeyes covering seven and a half. I just, again, I believe that that Ohio State Michigan game,
Starting point is 00:51:35 complete overreaction. Everybody's bailing on Ohio State. Tennessee is the public dog. Every Joe Public who goes into Vegas this weekend is betting Tennessee. They all like, yet the number's not really coming down. That means the pros are voting on Ohio State. I think they show up here. I do have
Starting point is 00:51:51 concerns about Will Howard, no doubt about it, but I've got some concerns about Nico, the quarterback for Tennessee. This guy's highly touted. I haven't always seen it. I know the defense is good, but again, like you said, cold weather, Ohio State's had a lot of time to prepare for this. I think the stadium's going to be juiced up. My big question to you is, if Ryan Day somehow loses this game, are they firing him like no, I don't think they can. Are you sure? I like competitive games. I like competitive games. You like three blowouts. I think the only reason I don't have Penn State here is because SMU is Chuck and Duck all the time. They're going to come in the back door.
Starting point is 00:52:25 They're not going to quit throwing. So I didn't put them on here, but I like the favorite this weekend. I'm leaning toward the home teams with extra time to prepare and really good coaches. I think Ryan Day is one of the best coaches in the country. Freeman. If Ryan Day lost, you wouldn't fire him. I don't know. I mean, I would tear up my Ohio State Futures tickets from the summer.
Starting point is 00:52:46 I really thought they were the best team in the country. And that loss at Michigan kind of changed some things for me. I don't know if day's completely safe if they lose this game. Colin, come on. Losing to Michigan again and then losing at home. They've lost four straight to Michigan. And next year it's back in Ann Arbor and the Buck and the Wolverines have the number one high school quarterback. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:53:05 Like this was the year to beat Michigan. Well, you know, Chip Kelly came out this week. I don't know if you heard the press conference. And he was like, yeah, you know, I didn't do a great job of getting the ball to our guys. Smith, the superstar receiver, the other receiver who's a first rounder. Like, they got to throw the football. Stop this running it. Tennessee's run defense is damn good.
Starting point is 00:53:24 They better come out and throw the football. I don't know if Howard totally delivers. I got faith in Ryan Day and Chip Kelly. All right. You got me nervous on the black guys down. No, I mean, you've had a very good year doing this. I think it's going to be a close weekend. You think it's going to be blowouts.
Starting point is 00:53:38 Where's clat on this game? Well, we'll ask him. Okay. I don't know. He knows. He knows. He knows. He knows.
Starting point is 00:53:42 He's got the better than it. I'm not doubting that. They've also got all the pressure. Yeah. Hey guys, it's us The Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe. I'm Kevin.
