This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's
superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app,
Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
A win is a win.
A win is a win.
I don't care which I'm saying.
Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey,
or my career in sports media.
Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast,
The Clifers Show.
This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes,
creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard,
but celebrated.
So let's get to it.
Listen to the Clifford show on the I Heart Radio app,
Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
And for more behind the scenes,
follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok.
Hey, what's good, y'all?
You're listening to Learn the Hardway
with your favorite therapist and host, Kear Games.
This space is about black men's experiences,
having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere,
but you're having them with a licensed professional
who knows what he's doing.
How many men carry a suit or armor?
It signals to the world that you not to be played with.
And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to.
Listen and learn the hard way on the IHard radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
What up? Welcome in. This is The Herd, wherever you may be.
And however you may be making it as part of your day. Thanks so much. I'm Doug Gotti.
In for calling Cowherd?
You ever do this when somebody posts something on social media and try and figure out where they are?
did you ever do that
Colin posted a reaction
I think to the Jimmy G thing
I don't know for a fact
where Colin is
I have a pretty good idea
I know a couple of the things
like we talked
I think over the weekend
but
that felt like East Coast
for Colin didn't it
it did
it felt like he was going to say Wicked Awesome
I don't know where
it felt like he was in New England
and I'll
I'll say this, okay.
There's a lot of people who crap on New England and New England's weather or whatever.
From this point until Thanksgiving, best place in the country to live.
The only downside to New England in the months of September and October and early November
is they don't really care about college football.
That's really the only thing because they love baseball.
They care about it.
They love, you got, this is not New England, but New York, like tomorrow night in Queens.
Serena playing and then like across the street you got de Grom pitching against against the Dodgers right
that's that's kind of that's wicked awesome um but they care about everything except really kind of
college football but the weather man once that humidity cuts is amazing amazing uh Neil uh you're
welcome on the Mike Dean reference yes I do know that he was a legend at at Sienna because I saw
Sienna tape. I know all about the Capital District.
Anyway, there's lots of ways to negotiate and renegotiate your contract, right?
And I do think that there are ways in which they're like different fields are similar.
You know, the pulling your stuff down off of social media, right, that is a little bit akin
to this has happened a couple times in my, not my, I haven't done it, but I know somebody else
in broadcasting has done it, who did the old clean out the office thing.
And I'll just, I'll tell you, for example, 12 years ago,
12 years ago popped up in my timelines, right?
12 years ago, I was on vacation from ESPN,
but I was already, I already apparently made the decision to leave.
And this is what happened.
So I'd worked there for 10 years, 9 years in Bristol,
and I was going on a two-week vacation.
I'd never been on even longer than a week vacation ever.
I haven't been on a two-week vacation since.
And I was going to think about, you know,
I had an offer from CBS, an offer from ESPN,
and what I wanted to do.
And I hadn't yet totally come to a decision.
So it was like a Friday night.
I got done.
My radio show used to be four to seven there.
And at seven o'clock, we had friends staying at our house.
so I had a cubicle and what happens,
and I don't know if you've ever been in a cubicle for,
this one I'd probably been in for like three, four years,
but you just kind of collect stuff, right?
And especially when you work in radio, people send you stuff, you know,
whether it's, you know, your M drive stuff or I got here,
you know, you got vitamins, you got somebody,
you'll send you something to sign, they'll send you a picture,
you'll get a you'll have old notes
you got all kinds of different
the Yiddish term is Khazirai
stuff if you will
right
chacholas is another one there's some chacholas
I didn't have a bobblehead collection
my Golick's
cube was next to me greenies was next to him
and they had even more stuff which kind of overflowed into mine
and then I had a little locker that had like my suit
so I was like you know what I'm going to clean out all this stuff
because the way it works there is, like,
and Colin was like the loan exception,
when you leave,
you're done,
and somebody goes and gathers up all your stuff
and hands it to you in like a big brown box.
And I just thought that was not personal.
Like, you know, I've been there 10 years.
I didn't know if I was going to leave.
But if I was going to leave, like,
I wanted to clean out my own stuff.
So I did.
It took me like an hour throughout a,
bunch had some stuff a couple trips to the car and back and i remember driving out it was like literally
last time i was on the campus and i was like man that was kind of cathartic a lot of memories i remember
the first time i went there i was filling in for todd wright all night it was still it was the week
after this is a true story my first fill in was for a guy todd right all night did a great
overnight show out of tampa usually for orlando and it was the week after september 11th had
shut everything down. So I flew up from Oklahoma City and filled in, and it was a Sunday night
show. That Sunday evening, the Jets had played the Patriots, and Drew Bledsoe got knocked out of the
game. And somewhere there's a tape blooming out there of me saying, Tom Brady starting,
Patriots are done this year, right? I mean, freezing cold takes would just be able, people want
the Steph Curry take. That one was way worse than the Steph Curry take, right? Anyway. So I remember
I'm like driving out.
I get home.
I get a call from one of my bosses like, oh, I guess you're out then.
Like, what do you mean?
Well, you cleared out your stuff.
It's like, no, I mean, yeah, I did, but it doesn't mean I'm leaving.
I just, if I come back, and I'm not going to be for a couple weeks.
And in two weeks, if I decide I'm not coming back, they'll be, you'll hand it to me
in a box.
I got to decide what I want to keep, what I don't want to keep.
Otherwise, I wouldn't need a U-Haul to get all that stuff home.
Well, I guess you're out.
And I go, well, I guess I am.
And that was it.
Literally, that was it.
And part of the idea was, I had gotten this, there's a, I won't say his name.
He's a very big name in sports broadcasting.
It's not calling it.
And he had cleared out his entire, he had an office.
And one time he was in negotiation, he was going on vacation, he cleared out his office,
gave away ties, anything.
It was clean.
Like, wait, what?
And then, lo and behold, they came back and renegotiated and he stayed there, still there to this
day.
That gives you any hint.
Okay. Lamar Jackson's taking a completely different tact here.
And one that I'm going to guess is going to work, even though it feels like a really bad idea and it shouldn't work.
Based upon everything else we know about society, it's likely going to work.
What is it? It's responding to the word my friend in the NBA loves to use is civilians, right?
responding to civilians about, you know, government secret data.
That's basically what this is.
One unverified user, remember this is not like, hey, blue checkmark gang.
This is random, who knows who it is, said the Ravens should give Lamar Jackson $250 million guaranteed.
And another responded by saying they already offered that.
Lamar Jackson was like, no, they didn't.
responded to just some random conversation, which means he had to Twitter search himself
and then find somebody who happened to comment because, I mean, Twitter search Lamar Jackson,
there's plenty of commentary on.
No, they didn't.
Then after another user said, again, this is no, this random could be anybody.
As much as I love Lamar, a fully guaranteed deal would be bad business.
Jackson replied, you don't love Lamar.
Third person.
That's pretty amazing, right?
Lamar then liked another tweet that photoshopped him in a Dolphins uniform.
Huh?
So, look, this feels bad business is Lamar making any of this public.
Lamar liking a Dolphins photo when he's going to get a new deal.
No one disputes.
He's going to get a new contract with the Baltimore Ravens.
They're not going to let a guy they drafted in the first round at third.
There's no way they're going to let an MVP of the NFL, who they built the entire offense around.
They're going to let him walk.
And by the way, if he doesn't like the terms that they have now, he has this year, fifth year option, next year, franchise tag, following your franchise tag.
They don't actually even have to negotiate for not only those two years.
Then there's a third year's a transitional tag, which is a huge number.
You don't want to give him that much, but that's still out there as leverage for the team.
all the while they can negotiate an extension.
He's going to get a new deal.
And it is bad business to give a guy who runs the football
more than any quarterback has in modern football history.
$250 million guaranteed.
And again, if I'm Lamar and I have an agent and doesn't have an agent,
but if you have an agent, it's a very smart, hey man, the bar is Deshaun Watson.
because if you look at it and you're just
honest with yourself about comparing
you know it's like comps in real estate
okay
Lamar has an MVP Deshaun does not
Lamar's won a road playoff game by the
by the way before okay
I know that there's what it appears everybody thinks
there's a ceiling and I and so far there is
but it's not that you can't win the playoffs he just hasn't
been able to win consistently in the playoffs he just hasn't been
able to win consistently in the playoffs he has won
he has zero knocks against him out the football field.
Not one.
Not a whisper of drinking, drugs, women, nothing.
Okay?
Super clean.
Face of a franchise.
Oh, yeah, and Deshawn Watson's torn his ACL twice.
Lamar Jackson, he got dinged up last year, but he's never really been hurt.
Never been injured.
He's been hurt.
Never been injured.
So I understand the, hey, $250 million.
That's the bar.
It should be $250 million plus a dollar.
That's what I'm worth.
And the team can sit there and go like, look, that's an outlier contract.
Everybody agrees to the bad contract.
And oh, yeah, by the way, that's Deshawn's third contract, not his second.
Okay, this is your second contract.
And it was only because he had leverage.
And he had multiple teams offering multiple deals.
And the Browns had to, you know, topped themselves.
But negotiating on Twitter feels, and not even negotiating with the team.
or with Schefter or making points with anybody with like just average random could be anyone dude
It obviously means he's frustrated. You know what he thinks he's worth and this is a very easy snapshot
Inside Lamar in which he believes that if you don't offer him 250 million dollars guaranteed you don't love Lamar
We love you we just don't love you two hundred fifty million dollars guaranteed for five years which would be a six year deal because
bro, you're going to, maybe not going to, the likelihood of injury is much higher for Lamar Jackson
than it is for most any other quarterback in the NFL.
It's like, well, then he won't run.
Well, he's the best runner we've ever seen.
Like, he's an unbelievable runner.
Well, he doesn't take the hits of Cam Newton.
Lots of guys don't take hits and then non-contact injuries.
And oh yeah, by the way, right now, you can't hit him because he's too quick, too athletic.
Three years from now will still be the same?
Probably not.
Guys don't get faster.
Everybody else does.
So it's not the idea.
And this is where you need an agent.
Okay.
Because then the aging can go like, look, man, they love you.
But they want to give you three years guaranteed.
Huge money.
And then the other two years will tack on whatever.
And as long as you're healthy, as long as you keep improving, then you get a new deal.
But negotiating on Twitter.
And I'm telling you, I don't, I don't love it.
I don't think anybody even likes it.
I don't think it's a good look.
It feels, it just feels like Kevin.
It's the same thing as Kevin Durant, right?
Just like, this is really where you want to have your voice heard?
Okay.
But it's going to work.
I mean, like, look, every college coach will tell you, if the NCAA rules against you,
get a bunch of the blue check brigade to tweet about how the NCAA is bad,
and then suddenly a kid who's ineligible is eligible.
how many things have changed because a business gets pressure off social media and so he's simply
putting pressure on social media and the Ravens I'm sure will relent and he'll get some gigantic deal
but unverified users saying it's bad business he's right he's right because remember a five-year
deal would go on the back of the fifth year this year so it'd be six years guaranteed and
Oh, yeah, by the way, news flash.
Mar Jackson didn't have a good year last year.
Very average.
Like, well, he didn't have his running backs.
He didn't.
You're right.
Aaron Rogers had Ty Montgomery, who was an average wide receiver playing running back,
went to the NFC championship game.
That's what the best of the best are able to do.
I'm not disputing the fact that it was an, you know what show with the Ravens and all their injuries.
last year.
But Lamar Jackson was unable to be the rising tide to lift all those ships.
Right.
I mean, look, Joe Burrow came off in ACL, essentially had no offensive line.
What he gets sacked 15, 20, 30 times against the Titans in the playoffs.
figured it out.
You know, the Ravens have drafted two, not one, two first round draft pick, wide receivers.
One, they sent Arizona.
They drafted first round.
draft pick tight ends.
They've used
resources to help that offense
while he's not making a bunch of money.
And there's been a ceiling there.
Do I think they're going to re-sign him?
Yes. Do I think Lamar Jackson is way better
than where he was drafted?
The last pick in the first round? Of course.
He's even better than the Ravens thought.
You know, the Ravens had two first round picks that year.
He was the second one.
He's been terrific.
But it'd be bad business to give him 250-plus
guaranteed over five years, which would be a six-year-
your deal.
But they'll probably do it because of social media and because Lamar is saying, if you don't,
if you don't give me that money, you don't love me.
Give me your thoughts at Gottlieb's show.
You can hit me up.
I do have a blue check on social media.
I think, I believe one play, one play is enough to get you fired.
I think it happened over the weekend.
We'll talk about that.
And Notre Dame, Ohio State, week one.
Oh, and LSU takes on Florida State,
and neither team is ranked also week one?
Little college football next in the herd.
One more herd?

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with a little kill?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you're not.
But just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed correct.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing
and we're still chasing it
and we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth,
or are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

You know, there's, I know there's a lot of reasons that people lose their job in coaching, right?
There's a lot of reasons.
In the NFL, if you lose the locker room, in the NFL, if you're unable to make important in-game decisions,
especially two-minute drill,
going for two, not going for two.
But I, you know, like,
I think at some point Mike McCarthy, for example, this year, right?
It's like, you have an offense coordinator who handles the whole offense.
You had a defensive guy.
You have nothing to do with that.
Your job is in-game decision-making, end-of-game stuff,
and if you screw it up,
when to take a time out, when not to take a time out,
when to kick, when to go for it.
You screw that up.
Enough to enough.
You know, you just, you got to go.
But there are, there are times in, like Chuck Pagano's fake punt call.
You guys remember that?
Where there was, was it two offensive linemen and a center, like two guards and a center, right?
And then Pat McAfee back to punt.
And then you had everybody else spread out wide.
They're taking on the Patriots.
I want to say it was a stay-ind-alone game.
Was it Monday night or was it Sunday night?
Whatever it was, it was widely regarded as the worst fake punt call of all time.
and Chuck Pagano, who Bruce Ariens did a great job when he was sick and it was Chuck strong,
I don't think he was a great head coach.
But when he was fired, that was the moment, right?
That was the moment.
I would, it's like, do you remember when Oregon played Nebraska, Mark Helferich's last year?
I think they scored six touchdowns, went for it every time, went for two, didn't get any of them.
right that was a series of plays but i mean by the way he's the guy who signed justin herbert
like he was a quarterback guru that thing went to you know what in a hell in a handbasket
the second that he was let go but it was because of that game or those decisions the i'm going
to keep doing what i'm doing that ended up getting him fired i mean look scott frost
appeared to be the perfect hire you know if that
thing doesn't work in Nebraska, you start to look around and go, Scott Frost can do it, who can do it?
I mean, we can sit here and go, oh, Frank Solich was done wrong. I don't know. That thing wasn't
going right with Solich. They were still kind of in the dark age offensively. Obviously, Bill
Callahan, it didn't work. You know, you kind of go through the different stages of, at some point,
you start to go, hey, Nebraska, we might have been wrong to leave the Big 12. And,
leave Texas football behind where we could have really recruited instead.
Now we're recruiting against other Big Ten schools for Big Ten players.
And why would you go here when you go to Penn State?
Why would you go here when you go to Michigan, Michigan State, or Wisconsin, or even Iowa?
But Scott Frost, he had an undefeated season in Central Florida.
He was a great player at Nebraska.
All seemed like it worked.
He's up 11.
And I don't know how many of you guys watched.
They're playing in Ireland.
He's up 11 in the second half.
in what I think anyone would consider
the most important game of his career.
This season, they have to win.
And last year they were really close.
More close losses to good teams than anybody.
Like, man, their record wasn't any good,
but they played everybody close.
They got all those, you know,
I know that close only matters
in horseshoes and hand grenades,
but Nebraska football, man, they're close.
You're up 11.
I mean, an onside kick that doesn't work.
five plays later, Northwestern scores, you end up losing the game.
If Scott Frost loses his job at the end of this year,
it will be about the totality of it,
about all the huff and bluster, about changing things and changing the culture,
yet the results stay the same, all the close losses.
But that play, that's his Pagano on sidekick.
I mean, a Pagano fake pun.
Look, here's what he said about after the game.
I made that call, so that's on me.
I thought all the momentum was on our side.
I thought if we got it, we could end the game.
And I felt like maybe we were the better team.
You can't really foresee them scoring 14 straight and us sputtering after we'd played well to start the second half on offense.
So again, those are excuses.
If I had it over, I wouldn't make the call.
Look, I love the idea that Scott Frost's like, look, I've had it all over, I wanted to have done it.
We don't hear that from football coaches.
Most football coaches are like, nope, it was right, it was there.
We just, you know, didn't execute.
you know we got to be aggressive
or whatever
but think about the other parts that he said
I thought we were the better team
you're the better team kick off and then get a stop and win the game
you're the better team one play
you don't need one play
this isn't the Patriots on fourth down
in their own territory
hey man if we get two yards we get a first time
an onside kick is not a high percentage play
that's like yeah man if we score
in this possession you take a
you take a half court shot
If you have a layup and you win the game, that's different, right?
Completely different.
If you're on your own 40 and you got a foot and you're like,
my offensive line is better than their defensive line and this is what we work for.
And if we get a foot, that's a reasonable explanation.
But the we thought we were the better team.
One play wins the game.
Who could have seen it going wrong?
A lot of people could have seen it gone wrong.
Just about everybody.
Like, let's not act like an onside kick.
It doesn't even work in Madden.
Like, all these, like, coaches, coaching like it's Madden.
Love it.
Going forward on, forthdown.
Love that.
Going tempo, trying to screw.
Love it.
It doesn't even work in Madden.
And I'm sure I'm going to get this social media.
Dude, you don't know how to do it on Madden.
Like, okay.
I give it to you.
But that's the kind of play that gets your ass fired.
You know?
What are you doing?
You're Nebraska.
You got the better team.
You're up 11.
Kick off.
Get a stop.
Get the ball back.
Shove it down their throat.
Win the game.
That and, do you see Northwestern?
When they run the ball, they just ran the ball to win the game.
Northwestern had the ball, and they out Nebraska to win the game.
Yikes.
Let's get to Ryan Music with the news.
This is the Herdline News.
Oh, man.
That's a, as you said, Doug, like, you can't win the entire season in the first game of the year, but it sure feels like you could.
You can lose it. Yeah, you could certainly lose it there. Well, we will continue with a bit of college football here, Doug.
LSU made big waves this offseason when they brought in Brian Kelly to be their new head coach.
And his family.
Me and my family. I am family. I think that, I think he's somehow gained an action.
accent and lost it over the course of like five months. It's really remarkable. Very, very quick
transition for him. Their season begins on Sunday against Florida State, as you mentioned. Florida
State did win their week zero matchup over Duquesne. The big question down in Baton Rouge, though,
facing Coach Kelly is who's their spreading quarterback? And when asked about it, his response was
everybody here wants to know who the quarterback is. I get that, but I think it's a tactical
advantage for us not to announce it. The advantage for us is that we haven't played.
So it doesn't help to give up any of our cards in that sense.
Got to keep those state secrets close to the vest there, Doug.
I don't love it.
I mean, it's better than Michigan.
Did you hear what Jim Harbaugh said where it's biblical?
It was, yeah.
Biblical?
What?
I'm not that familiar with the Bible, but did Solomon play too cool?
Was Solomon one of those guys like, man,
was he like the headball coach?
Okay.
He was like, man, help, hey, hey, we got two good gonebacks.
Go see you play better.
Because you brought it up.
Yes.
The Jim Harbuss story was one of those things where when you're reading and researching to do stuff for the show, you know, there's a lot of like aggregations out there.
So like you see one iteration of it.
And I saw the quote and I go, this can't be the original story.
There has to be more to the quote here where he explains what that means.
Nope.
I never got to the bottom of it.
I'm like, I don't even understand what that means.
Yeah, Aaron Rogers wants to follow up.
up on that question? Yeah. You know, I don't even, he said it was biblical.
Solomon was a really smart guy or something like that. And that's it. You just left it at that.
You know, I guess my Old Testament knowledge is just not strong enough. I wasn't aware there
was discussions about quarterback and leadership and playing at the University of Michigan.
I do think the Old Testament mentions the Buckeyes, though, somewhere in there. There definitely was
hands on leather. Yeah, okay, yeah. But you also
couldn't wear two claws back then. Maybe that's what it was, right? Because back then, if you wore two
cloths, you could be stoned. You had two different fabrics, you could be stone. But if you had two
quarterbacks, not stoned. All good. Again, this is very limited biblical knowledge. As for
LSU and their family of quarterbacks, I hate this. I hate this. What coaches don't realize
they do. And we've seen it happen. I mean, even guys that are good coaches,
they make the wrong pick coming out of train camp,
sometimes for a myriad of reasons, right?
Like, I know he lost his job,
but look what happened at USC with Sam Donald.
You start the wrong guy the first three games,
then Donald comes in, you win the Rose Bowl.
Bad look.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's, what were you watching?
Now, sometimes it should be pointed out
that the more experience you have within a system,
the more experience you have at a school,
you're going to look better in the preseason.
Because you know what's coming.
I mean, any basketball,
my first couple weeks of practice at either school I went to,
I was lost.
Why?
Because I hadn't been there.
The guy I was going against Had,
and they just have a better feel for things.
But you undercut the chance for a quarterback to be a leader
by not naming him the starting quarterback.
You do.
You undercut the, because why should I listen to you, dude?
You're not even the starting quarterback.
Whereas if you're starting quarterback, you're like,
hey, this is my offense, this is my team.
Okay?
You run the group chat.
You tell guys when to be there.
You get the throwing sessions early.
you're the first one in the building, you're doing all those things.
And I do think that coaches have a tendency to, whether they know they're doing it or don't know they're doing it,
undercut the authority of a starting quarterback by not naming one to start the season.
Yeah.
And maybe it has to do with Jane Daniels, the one who may be the start of the state transfer.
So they think he's not all the way there yet.
Well, sometimes what you want is you want a guy to earn it on the field.
Right.
You want that, you bring him in.
And all of a sudden, an electrifying drive, and then everybody buys in because they see it in person.
Maybe they didn't see it in practice.
Maybe he's a gamer.
Yeah.
Could be similar to what a lot of reports are, like Albert Breyer said, about what's happening in Pittsburgh Steelers.
Sure.
Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett hasn't been – Kenny Pickett hasn't been impressive in practice, but much better in the games type of thing.
So I guess we'll find out on Sunday when their season officially begins.
We'll move over to the NFL, Doug.
Still a little over a week before the NFL regular season kicks.
off with the bills, taken on the reigning champion Los Angeles Rams, but the preseason is all
wrapped up and pro football focus put out that Justin Fields was their highest graded
quarterback in all of the preseason. According to their analysis, Fields had zero turnover
worthy plays in all of its preseason action this year. It's awesome. It's really good. Doesn't
matter, but really good. I mean, look, the question for Justin Fields is very simply. You have
a new regime that didn't draft you.
So, and if you look at most of these guys that are cut today that were drafted by the team,
you're like, man, why did they cut them?
Because there's a new general manager.
But a new general manager is like, look, I didn't draft that guy.
I got no ties to him.
I cut him.
Doesn't mean my draft pick doesn't stay with the team.
So he's going to have to prove himself.
And there's questions about his offensive line, questions about his weapons.
And I guess we'll see.
But, I mean, congrats.
I mean, look, it's better to be the highest rated quarterback in the preseason than being the lowest rated or any other.
Sure.
There's no negatives to it, but it...
And then when you're like...
Yeah, Dev, I mean, to your point about them potentially, you know, making a decision on him,
it's...
I can't believe what Chicago has done.
I mean, there's been so much about the history of their lack of having a true star quarterback in the history of the Bears' franchise.
And going back over a year ago when they traded up to get Justin Ponce.
fields, it was kind of like, wow, look at the bears. They're actually doing it. They're actually
going in on getting a real quarterback.
And all of a sudden, it's like, hey, make it or break a time. Before you even know it,
he's going into that second season. And it's clear that that organization could be ready
to move off from him in. I don't know if it's, I don't know if it's clear. I just,
they don't, they don't own him. If his, his failure, if he fails, it's not tied to them.
right it's not tied to them so I think that's a that that's a and look Ryan Pace is also he's a former
offensive lineman in his own right right yeah so I'm sure he believes I mean I got a good feel for
offensive line I got a good feel for what it's going to take to rebuild this thing and either he
sees it or doesn't see it in fields that's what he's brought in and remember his time was in
Kansas City so right he's seen what the best look like I would hope that he would know but
But there has been a lack of investment to this part on the offensive side of the ball that
has others in the NFL saying they don't, they're not sold what they have.
Yeah, it's going to be interesting to see what the actual expectations are, what they set them
at for fields, because I think the win-loss record is going to be a really tough hill for him
to climb.
Sure.
So what are they going to need to see from him?
Is it, you know, whatever, improved completion percentage, you know, better touchdown to
interception ratio, those type of markers, because I don't think anyone's looking at the bearers going,
that's an 11-win team.
So you know the losses are going to be piled up.
What can he show just based off of how he plays to convince them that it's been good enough?
That's right.
Music with the News.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Heard Lye News.
All right.
We got a lot of NFL still to get to, including Jimmy Garoppolo, re-signing for a lesser amount with the San Francisco 49ers.
also a big signing or extension in the NBA,
how that affects others and potential trades in the NBA.
I want to get to.
Danny Connell is going to join us next hour.
We'll talk, we will talk Florida State.
There's all these programs out there that are looming, sleeping giants,
that eventually you think they'll figure it out.
Feels like USC, not back yet, but on the path to being back.
What about Texas?
What about Florida State?
We'll ask Danny Connell next hour.
But how about next?
Dan Wetzel is going to join us.
Of course, the best-selling author, he covers college football.
We'll get his sense of how big a game is this for Notre Dame and is Texas back?
And, oh, yeah, by the way, remember Clemson?
Can they get back to being Clemson this year?
We get to that next in The Herd.

Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all,

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at It podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know.
I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
and we're still chasing it
and we don't know when we've done enough
because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
because you find it important to be a good person
while you hear on earth?
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

Danny Cannell next hour.
We'll talk about some of the lines on some of his games.
It was actually,
um,
dare I say, an exciting baseball game.
night in Anaheim. Crazy exciting baseball game. In Anaheim last night? It was. And some interesting
tennis in Flushing, which leads to an amazing Wednesday night with Serena and DeGrom like across
the street, both performing, Dodgers, Mets, along with the U.S. Open taking place. There's more stuff
to get to as well as some hoop stuff upcoming. But let's welcome in Dan Wetzel who he joins us.
Of course, he's a best-selling author.
He also wrote about Serena's win last night.
I want to get to that in a second.
And he works for Yahoo Sports.
Let's start with Serena.
This is a weird final match at some point to follow because you don't actually know when it's going to be the final match, right?
It's just a, it's a very strange.
Is tonight tonight?
No, no, wait.
We wanted to win, but everybody wants to be there for the last match, right?
It's a weird kind of existence.
Well, I think the fans want to be there for the last victory.
Yeah.
Nobody wants to be there to watch the inevitable loss,
but which is what I think made Monday so special.
You know, how long does Serena last at this U.S. Open, you know,
is anyone's guess.
She's playing the number two seat on Wednesday.
Could she win that?
Sure.
And make a run for a couple more games.
Sure.
But what you saw on Monday, you know, she doesn't play much anymore.
she's got injuries.
She's 40, about the term 41.
She's a mother of a nearly a five-year-old.
I mean, all of this stuff is so unprecedented.
So what you saw on Monday were these moments where she could still dig deep and deliver some incredible shot, particularly reserve at times.
But there were other times she just, you know, was not competitive on every ball would just allow, you know, allow shots to go past or wouldn't chase stuff that.
and she benefited from really playing a journey,
a journey of an opponent that aided with some unforced error.
So it was a great night Monday in New York.
And I think going into this, you know,
other than some miraculous run to win it or the finals
or something crazy like that,
this is pretty much a successful U.S. Open for everyone involved at this point.
You had the feel good night and the big celebration.
and if she loses on Wednesday, she loses on Wednesday.
But it was a great scene on Monday night with just the energy of the crowd
and the celebration after and the celebrities and just looked like a lot of fun for Serena Williams.
It was a celebration of an incredible career, a historically great career.
Dan Wetzel joined us from Yahoo Sports.
Let's get to college football.
If Scott Frost isn't the guy in Nebraska, who is the guy in Nebraska who can do it?
Yeah, that's an excellent question.
And, you know, they have not been able to figure that out.
They've had some decent coaches that they've let go,
that they probably wish could duplicate that success.
Frank Solich and Bo Polini in particular,
both would routinely win nine games.
That all of a sudden wasn't enough for Nebraska.
Now they probably beg for that.
It's a weird job at this point,
and it has been since they left for the Big Ten.
wrong league
wrong league dan that's the that's the deal wrong league
like we could talk about all the money
and all that stuff and i think the new big ten
with ucla and u sc gives them the chance to come and recruit
california that that may might save them
but cutting texas out of the equation the opponents
wrong league that's that that's what's gotten coaches fired
that and an onside kick when you're up 11 in ireland
those are the things that get you fired yeah i mean i'm out of the dreadful
decision i mean they're playing they were up double digits on northwestern
which is not exactly like the o three
Miami Hurricanes that are going to score 60 points on you.
They run the ball.
You don't have to worry about like quick strike offense.
We got to keep them off the field.
You punt them deep and make them take nine minutes to get down the field.
But regardless, you're right, the wrong league.
They have a ton of money, but right now they're just another big school with a big
stadium and a great game day environment in the Midwest.
And there's a whole bunch of those.
but they're further from any appreciable talent base than anybody else.
So they're constantly trying to get kids out of Ohio and Detroit and Chicago,
and you literally have to drive or fly over five schools just like Nebraska to choose Nebraska.
Yeah, and the kids don't know about 30 years, they went with no less than a nine-win season.
30 years.
I mean, it's really remarkable.
Speaking of remarkable success, Florida State, we're going to see them against L.S.
you. And, you know, from my lifetime, I remember, was it 14 years in a row? They finished top
six or better, which is just craziness. How far away is Florida State from being Florida State?
It's not going to be this year. You know, the thing about the Florida schools is generally one of
the three main schools is up. And when you get it going at one of those three places, you are the best
in the country, whether it's Miami or Florida, Florida State.
And then usually something happens and you get knocked down and someone else ascends.
And right now none of them are there.
And it's sort of a battle of which one is going to make that move.
Miami is doing an awful lot, doing really well in recruiting, and they have Mario Cristobal.
Is it going to be the Cains?
Is it going to be Florida with a new regime?
They're doing all right.
They're in the SEC.
Or it can be Mike Novell at Florida State.
But it's sort of this kind of whackable thing where one's up and then everyone else.
goes down. And right now it's wide open, but Florida State does not have that talent level to be it
right now. But, you know, can you get there? Yes, because the potential is enormous at any of those
three schools. You just have to get it right. I don't see that this year or next. Maybe in the future,
though. All right. To the big one this weekend, Ohio State, Notre Dame, first game of the season,
and it's the first regular season game, Marcus Freeman's going to coach against his alma mater.
I think everyone concludes probably a better guy, right? Like, just the, the,
The players love them.
The parents seem to love him.
But 17.5 point dogs.
This does feel like an Irish, I don't know if you can lose close.
But it's also interesting because he did lose his first game,
that bowl game to Oklahoma State.
I know not everybody played for Notre Dame.
But how important is this game for Marcus Freeman and his future at Notre Dame
in terms of setting kind of the course of where they're going?
Yeah, I mean, look, it's one game.
And the problem with college football is they're the fifth-ranked team in Ohio State's second,
and Ohio State's a 17-and-a-half-point favorite.
The gap is so enormous.
So there's not any pressure to go win this game any more than there is to win every game at Notre Dame.
But you certainly don't want to get the doors blown off right off the bat.
This is going to have a huge television rating.
there are tons of recruits watching.
There's tons of recruits in person that Ohio State is visiting that Notre Dame is also recruiting.
So there is a lot on the table for that.
And the one thing that Markets Freeman has done is elevated the recruiting at Notre Dame
to where they're involved in a few more of these super high elite players that he can go get.
He's an extremely personal guy, definitely more personable than Brian Kelly.
But you have to keep those.
They've got great recruits committed, but you have to keep them.
And, you know, I don't think this would happen, but you don't want to lose, you know,
54 to zero or something like that.
Right.
And everyone go, wait, can this guy coach?
Because we don't know.
It's that way with any brand-new coach, Dan Lannning in Oregon, Brent Venerables at Oklahoma,
same thing.
What can you do?
So that's the pressure.
Is this a competent team?
I think if you do that, he's fun.
Dan, great stuff.
Can't wait to read your next column.
Thanks so much for joining us.
I appreciate it.
Appreciate it, Doug.
