This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app,

On the Look Back at it podcast.
From 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 was big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year.
It was a wild year.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
A win is a win.
A win is a win.
I don't care what I'm saying.
Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media.
Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show.
This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard,
but celebrated.
So let's get to it.

Here we go. It's hour two. We're live in L.A. and the show is called The Herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1, where Colin was right, what Colin was wrong in a couple of minutes. Sean Payton stops by in 30 minutes. Former Saints coach joins us in studio. He usually goes in hour three. We bring him an hour two for those of you who don't get to listen to Hour Three. And you'll get the coach. His insights, he has been
fantastic. By the way, I have Joe Burrow now on my podcast, right? So I, you know, I find
myself, I want Joe to succeed. That game was fascinating because for the first time all year,
the Bengals looked like last year's Bengals. Flawed, vulnerable, make mistakes. But in the
second half, magic happens with Burrow and Jamar Chase. Jamar Chase is one of those guys.
You throw the ball out to him 10 yards, and it becomes an 80-yard play. There's so many players
in this league that are like, you can coach the heck.
out of your team. But do you have playmakers? Can guys do things you can't coach? Casey has them.
Buffalo has them. Burrow has them. I think the Chargers have them. I think they'll win tonight.
And your Jets maybe. Maybe. Maybe they're good. Maybe a wild car team. But I'll say, wait, on,
on Jamar Chase, he did take advantage of Marcus Latimore's backup. A lot of Moore out for the game,
Honey Badger looked terrible for the Saints. I mean, Bengals, nice win for your guys.
No, I mean, I don't know why here's the play.
They constantly play from behind.
But they're starting to look like last year's Bengals, where it was, you didn't necessarily
know if they were the best coach team on the field of the best team.
But then the second half, the defense would clamp.
Burrow would make plays.
By the way, since week two, he's got like 12 total touchdowns and one turnover.
So they're starting to look like the team we saw last year.
They're not as talented as Buffalo.
They're probably not as well-coached as Kansas City.
but that's a team that can win without a day game.
Since you mentioned the Jets, I would say they have more talent than the Bengals.
You look at the 25 and under, just 25 and under.
The Jets are loaded, Colin.
Don't give me that stare.
You know this team has a lot of talent.
One has Burrow.
This is true, yes.
Zach Wilson had 99 yards passing.
By the way, no touchdown passes last two weeks.
Elijah Moore didn't get targeted for the Jets.
All right, here we go.
Colin right, Colin wrong.
Boom, let's go.
Where Colin was right.
Blazing one great week, four and one.
We picked the jets to upset the Packers.
We loved dogs.
We took Atlanta, the Steelers and the Seahawks to win.
The only loss.
We picked the favorite Ravens, and they lost, led for most of the game.
We are 15 and 10 on the year.
The numbers are tasty this week as well.
We also had a good college weekend this year.
Where Colin was wrong.
Bailey Zappy, 29 points.
Bailey Zappy, Zappy, 38.
points, both 100 plus passer ratings. I didn't see this coming. Basically, he's getting the ball to the people
they want it to. He's less mistake prone than Mack Jones. They're running the ball. They're scoring big
points. This is what I did not see happening. This team's offense right now is rolling. I don't like
their playmakers. They've got B-tide ends and B&C wide receivers. It's kind of surprising. I mean,
it's like, Belichick's like, do what we say. You will win. And Zappy gets rid of that puppy quick. And he
delivers it accurately.
Where Colin was right?
Been on this for two years.
Tell me what Matt Lefleur's specialty is.
The special teams are again terrible in Green Bay.
The defense is underperforming,
and the offense is a BB gun
that doesn't use their top running back enough, Aaron Jones.
Dylan's getting more carries now.
I do not get it.
I can see great coaching with Brian Daybull
or Kyle Shanahan or Sean McDermott or Belichick.
I could see Brian Flores and,
Miami how he reshaped the defense in a year. We're on year number four now. What is his go-to
secret sauce? I do not see it. Where Colin was wrong. But I'm starting to see Robert Salas.
Last year the Jets were wildly uneven, half to half in game to game. They're now fifth and
takeaways and third in quarterback hits, and that is Sala. He is a young, good-looking, big energy
guy with a ton of passion, and that is the Jets defense. You can see.
see his footprint all over this defense. They play over outside of themselves, over themselves.
They play with a ton of passion. The Jets are. Now, the offense, to me, that's not his specialty.
And Zach Wilson last two weeks hasn't had a touchdown pass. So is this what they're going to be?
Have to win with defense only. But I will say this. By year two, you got to start showing me your
side of the ball and expertise. That's my knock on the floor. What does he do well?
starting to see the expertise of Sala.
This defense is playing with their hair on fire.
They're taking the ball away and they're getting to the quarterback.
Where Colin was right.
Said Jim Harbaugh is now in the underrated category.
I said Michigan would thump Penn State and they did, should have been 60 to 7.
They had a 42 to 18 time of possession advantage.
I said, Michigan's going to win this game.
They're going to win it because they have the better coach and the better program,
and this is the best team Harbaugh's had.
this is the best Michigan team including last year he's had.
It's the fastest, the most talented at quarterback.
They can run.
They can throw it deep.
They can hit you in the mouth.
The Michigan Wolverines and Ohio State both have separated from the Big Ten conference.
Ohio State did years ago.
Michigan, this is a legitimate team with a great coach, has joined them.
Michigan and Ohio State look different than everybody else in this conference.
Where Colin was wrong.
That was quick. The Dodgers won 111 games and they're out of the playoffs. I thought it was the best batting order I'd seen since the 1970s Cincinnati Reds. They're gone. Listen, we didn't know much about their bullpen. Craig Kimberl's a guy they paid for. A lot of money to be a closer. They left him off the playoff roster. And in the end, San Diego, a fun, young, exciting, talented team with a great closure and Josh Hader. They beat the Dodgers. By the way, baseball fans, there's
no salary cap. So these
upsets are great for the sport. You just don't want
the Yankees, Dodgers, Braves,
Mets. I think postseason
has given us turns and surprises
and twists. This is one
of them and the Padres are a good watch.
Where Colin was right.
Noisier the off-season,
uglier the regular season.
We said Arizona's making way
too much noise, too much publicity,
bringing in your agent, too much
stop it. Arizona's a mess
offensively, and that's with
a talented quarterback, good weapons, and an offensive coach.
There's no excuse for this.
I had a friend at the game yesterday.
He's like, this is a mess of an offense.
Kingsbury, by the way, signed an extension.
Kyler Murray signed an extension.
The general manager signed an extension.
So they got to communicate and figure it out.
You got to find resolution on this.
You just gave everybody an extension.
But this team way, way too much noise in the off season.
You've got the owner dropping stuff to the media.
you've got players, do it. Back and forth, everybody taking shots, and this is why I say,
bet against the noisiest off-season team, and Arizona won that going away.
Where Colin was wrong. I thought Notre Dame's new coach, Marcus Freeman, felt like a great fit.
He has been a dud so far. The offense for the Irish has evaporated since Brian Kelly left.
He's got great energy. He's good in the room. He's a recruiter. But they just lost to Stanford,
and it's the only FBS team
Stanford's beaten this year.
They were at home. Stanford's not good.
This is unacceptable.
They just don't have any creativity or any juice offensively.
They've had some injuries.
Not good enough.
Everybody's getting hurt all over the place.
Marcus Freeman and Brent Venable so far,
maybe they're just great coordinators.
Some guys are VPs and some guys are president.
Maybe he's just a great coordinator.
But this has been an ugly, ugly start for Oklahoma and Notre Dame's new young coaches, fairly young.
Where Colin was right?
I told you about three weeks ago. Cam Acres is not long for the Rams.
Doesn't block, apparently not a great practice player, doesn't follow direction,
fumbles too much, and the Rams reportedly this weekend, the running back is on the trade market.
If you watch the NFL and you see talented players playing less and less and less,
that tells you a coach has made a personnel decision or a personality decision
and Cam Acres looks like he is on the way out.
There you go.
Colin Wright.
Colin wrong on a Monday.
Sean Payton, bottom of the hour.
You know, I know people think I pick on the Packers.
There's another Aaron Bight I'm going to play here.
But it is funny that Matt LaFlewer is the Green Bay coach.
He was essentially, if you look at the, when you get a job in the NFL, you almost never get a superstar quarterback.
You never get Mahomes or you get Sam Darnold.
You get a backup.
You never get the keys to a sports car.
And that's Green Bay.
Matt LaFleure was given the keys to the sports car.
He's this good-looking guy.
He connects generationally the same kind of age as Aaron Rogers.
And Green Bay is great with that sports car when it's sunny and there's no traffic.
and you put the top down and the wind in your hair.
They are a beautiful team to watch.
But the moment there's a cloud in the sky,
there's a chance of rain,
keep the car in the garage.
This team, this is year four with LaFleur,
the minute there's crisis,
they fold.
The minute there's crisis.
And I think a lot of it,
it's a very young team with a lot of their weapons,
and they're dying for a leader.
And, you know, Aaron spent a lot of,
last couple of years doing his whole, I'm trying to find the meaning of life stuff, and that's
fine. But they look like a team that's not connected. It doesn't feel like Lefleur's connected
to Aaron. Aaron's connected to his young receivers. You can see teams that are connected, Philly and the
Jets. And it's not just teams that win. I mean, the Buccaneers lost this weekend, but I feel
with Brady in that offense, he's barking at these guys, he's going out with these guys, he is
connected to these guys. He doesn't know what's love him, but I feel a connectivity. I just don't
I think this team is begging to be led.
All these young kids on this team, they're begging to be led,
and this is where you see coaching and veteran quarterback play.
And, you know, maybe that's just not Aaron's makeup.
You know, his DNA, it's not his makeup.
He talked after.
Oh, I don't know.
I mean, we've got to be realistic about where we're at.
We played a couple subpar games in the last two,
so we've got to play better.
But wobbly,
only if people are breaking rank.
I think it would be interesting to look at the comments from all of our guys and coaches.
And hopefully we stick together.
That's the important thing.
But until I see it's breaking ranks, I'm not going to say there's any wobbliness going on.
I don't think loyalty is the most important thing here.
I mean, the key is loyalty.
No, the key is fixing it.
The key is fixing the issues, not everybody being loyal.
The bottom line is you're going to get splintered locker rooms even when you're winning.
Guys want to make their money.
Guys want to go, loyalty is not the problem here.
The problem isn't splitting ranks.
The problem is, what are they?
They're dying for leadership here.
And that's why, you know, I've had coaches text me when Aaron starts talking about retirement.
It's like you start talking about it.
Devante Adams, when he left, what did he say?
He said, I didn't know Aaron's future.
Who do they miss right now?
Devante Adams.
This team is not, they're not mentally or physically tough.
With Devonte, you played with a lead.
Aaron's numbers, his data in his career.
He doesn't play as well from behind.
Like he's not Mahomes.
Mahomes, that's his brand.
Elway, that was his brand.
That's Brady's brand.
Leading behind their great.
Russell Wilson for years.
That's not Aaron's brand.
Aaron's pretty.
Aaron's aesthetically pleasing.
Aaron throws a beautiful ball.
He's not known as a guy.
known as a guy that's a foxhole guy. He's kind of aloof. He's his own guy. He's a real
smart guy and he's really talented. But there are things guys are and things guys aren't. And I'm
sorry, but that was an interesting bite. Loyalty is the key. No, it's not. The key is leadership
and figuring out, hey, here's what we do well. Let's lean into this. I said going into this
season, it was going to be very interesting because what this team needed is not necessarily
what Aaron does well. Like, put his arms around kids. He doesn't have any kids. He's not married,
no kids. Aaron's life starts. Aaron's the son of his galaxy, right? It's not a lot of sacrifice in
his life. Not married, no kid. This is where you need like almost a father figure in the room.
Like, all right, guys, I got to be patient. We go back. That's not Aaron's makeup. I mean,
he's struggled with his own family. That's not his makeup. By the way, there are things, there are gifts,
that Aaron has that nobody else has.
But I'm not sure if he's the guy for this roster.
Did you see yesterday, Colin?
The Packers had six drop passes yesterday.
And Aaron Rogers coming out talking about breaking ranks.
They're sitting back here like, oh, Sammy Watkins is coming back from IR.
He's going to save the day.
Minds me of these crazy Laker fans who are like, Kendrick Nunn.
He's coming off the injury or injured reserve.
Kendrick Nunn's going to be our point card.
Like, they have no answer at wide receiver.
And Aaron looks like he's sick of these guys, doesn't he?
He just looks upset.
Rendell Cobb got hurt yesterday.
High ankle sprain.
Probably two to four weeks.
Listen, there are personality fits that work.
Like we've said this before.
I never felt Russell Wilson like felt like Seattle.
I always felt Aaron felt like a California quarterback.
And there are like Big Ben felt like Pittsburgh.
Like Big Ben felt like Pittsburgh.
And there are Aaron's personality with this group of young players and this young
unproven coach.
It's odd.
It's just I can't figure out what they're trying to do.
What are they?
It's not just like Dallas right now.
I always have the same question.
What is Dallas?
Just a collection of talented guys?
That's not a team.
It's just talented guys.
This is Steve Kavino and Rich Davis.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at It podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Not a great weekend for Los Angeles.
Rams won, but they're a mess.
USC lost.
By the way, I actually, I was on a plane flying back from Utah Sunday morning with all these USC fans.
And I said to them, I feel better about your team today than I did going into the weekend.
If they had the game, going on the road is hard in conference.
Go ask Alabama.
It's hard.
And you go in, it's like the biggest, loudest crowd Utah's ever had.
And it was like, hey, Utah came off a bad win.
You know, USC almost had it.
A lot of backups made a huge place.
Didn't USC lead that game for all about like 40 seconds?
Yeah, I mean, I came out of it in my takeaway as USC is a flawed team, especially.
There's some places defensively where they're using sort of castoffs from other programs.
They're in every game.
They're obviously well-coached.
They've got reserves contributing.
Their quarterback and head coach are brilliant.
It's like sometimes you lose like, like for the Dodgers, you spend that kind of money.
That's a bad loss.
Sometimes I look around sports and I'm like, that's not a terrible.
I thought Dallas losing to Philadelphia.
I'm like, Dallas, there are ceilings to this team because of their coach.
Like Dallas has limitations.
They don't have enough weapons.
If C.D. Lam got hurt.
Lights out.
Like, it's over.
Like, they need C.D. Lamb to make plays.
But sometimes you have a bad weekend and you look up and you're like, you know, I learned something about my team and a loss.
I watched USC and I thought, you know what?
They may not lose again.
If they beat in Utah, my takeaway was they were losing to UCLA.
Now this morning, I think they'll beat UCLA.
Can you ask your USC sources about Jordan Addison?
That ankle injury did not look good.
Did not look great.
But good news is they play three poor Pac-12 teams until UCLA, so they got a month to get him right.
Well, the come down off that loss is going to be tough.
Caleb Williams looked very upset.
He was, by the way, that kid is phenomenal.
Caleb Williams is a superstar.
He is a great.
Oh, my gosh.
Listen, when you got the coach and the quarterback right in college football, like right now Tennessee,
they got a great young coach, the quarterback right, scoring 50.
points on Alabama.
I will just say, Lincoln Riley, late game usage of timeouts or lack thereof.
Could he use some work?
You know, he needs to work on that before he gets to the NFL, for sure.
He's going to the NFL calling in like two years.
He can pick his job.
He's been that good.
His play calling is incredible.
Oh, my gosh.
I think he needs a good six, seven years of college ball to refine his skills for the NFL.
Lincoln, you're not going anywhere.
J. Mack with the news.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Start with the 49ers, Colin.
Rough loss to the Falcons.
But nobody's healthy.
Well, that's the big picture is, my gosh.
After the game, it was declared that of their 22 starters,
11 of them are on IR, were inactive, or got injured.
Half the starting lineup.
No, they are, that's why I took Atlanta this weekend.
There's nothing they can do.
They're missing, and not only missing starters, they're missing stars.
Like 11 missing guys, 8 are stars.
Yeah, it's going to be tough to overcome.
Jimmy Garapolo said, you know, listen, they were in the game.
They beat themselves on Sunday.
Self-inflicted wounds was a big, that was the story of the day.
And, you know, those are correctable, but it's just you can't have them.
You can't have as many as we had out there.
And when you do have them, you've got to overcome it.
And, you know, we didn't do that today.
Putting up zero points in the second half is that's not us.
And so we just got to get back to the drawing board, just get back to our style of football.
And I think the rest will take care of itself.
But, yeah, we can't put out of performance.
this today. Yeah. That's almost
one of those. It's excusable.
Well...
Eleven starters out. I mean, come
on. Well, there are no points in the second
half was troubling. Colin, somebody sent me this stat
that Kyle Shanahan is
Owen 26 when
trailing by more than four points after
three quarters. That means he's not a comeback guy.
Well, let's... O'N26
is not a small sample size.
You can look away all you want. Like
Kyle Shanahan, eh.
A little troubling. All right. Next
out. Let's go to the Carolina Panthers. They suffered a bad loss to the Rams 24-10. Panthers are probably
the worst team in the league. They are. What about this, though? Yeah, this is the big news.
So Steve Wilkes kicked wide receiver Robbie Anderson out of the game. He popped off on the
sideline to a wide receiver coach. It was like Antonio Brownish. So he kicks him off the sideline
after the game was like, listen, we're not going to deal with this now. Guess what? Like 20 minutes ago,
Robbie Anderson just got traded to the Arizona Cardinals according to the NFL network.
Now, Robbie Anderson as a Jets guy, the Jets let him walk.
Yeah, Jets let him walk.
And he was a good productive player.
And Jets fans, you know, all these Jets guys on social media,
how could we let Robbie Anderson go?
He's so good.
They let him go for a reason.
This guy's a locker room nightmare.
He has a massive ego.
He just burned bridges in Carolina.
Cliff Kingsbury, good luck with Robbie Anderson in Arizona.
Now, it could mean that Hollywood Brown, who went down against Seattle yesterday,
they had to, like, carry him off.
It didn't look great.
DeAndre Hopkins comes off the suspension list for his debut Thursday night.
They play the Saints at Home.
What are we to make of Cliff Kingsbury, Arizona?
Well, everybody just got extensions.
So, I mean, to me, Robbie Anders, they're trying to save the season.
They're trying to do anything they can.
He's a speed guy.
I like their personnel.
I think Steve Kimes put together a good roster.
But, I mean, Cliff Kingsbury had a losing record in college.
We're not talking Lincoln Riley here.
One thing that was really troubling as someone who bet on Arizona this weekend,
they didn't fix their kicking situation, right?
They kept this guy who was, I don't want to hammer the kid.
He missed badly last week against the Eagles.
Colin, they got inside the 35-yard line and we're like, well, we can't kick.
So we got to go for it on fourth down three times.
They fail every time.
Then the guy misses an extra point.
And this is a close game.
Now, the good news for Arizona, NFC West, nobody's above 500,
which is a major shocker, Niners, Rams.
So Arizona's not out of it yet.
No, they're not.
Seattle's shockingly interesting.
The whole division's weird.
Yeah, very strange.
It's a weird division.
The Super Bowl champs can't score with an offensive coach in Stafford.
Did you watch Rams, Carolina?
I watched a little bit of the first half.
It was the worst watch of the game.
Then I started watching it was the corner TV game,
but the first half was absolutely watching paint dry.
And you were waiting for Ellen Robinson to break out.
He had a decent game.
He did.
He had five or six catches.
Yeah, 63 yards.
Way to go.
Alan Robinson against the worst team in the league.
All right, wrapping up.
I think we'll talk about this little plucky team in New York.
Love it.
The Jets.
Colin, how about that win, 2710 over the Packers?
And look at this.
This was awesome.
Soth Gardner, the defensive rookie of the year, Locke, put on a cheesehead after the game.
It was taunting fans.
There were a lot of Jets fans there, by the way.
And then, of course, Alan Lazardo, the Packers came and knocked it off.
He was not happy.
You know what?
This kid is the best player in the draft.
He's absolutely fan.
And their other, Reed, the other corner's good.
DJ Reed, they got him from Seattle.
He's a good player.
number on sauce gardener yesterday.
So they targeted him seven times.
Gave up one catch for eight yards.
He is a locked down guy. He's a pro bowl
corner. The kid is so talented.
When you got a great quarterback like that.
Come on, this is funny. Yeah. Listen,
and the Jets, Colin,
maybe they get it from me, a Jets fan, but they
got a lot of swag. This team is
talking trash and backing it up.
Their sideline is like fired up
with young energy. No, it is.
But there is an issue. So he's a defensive
coach. And the defense, all
numbers show you that Sala's imprint is showing up.
Zach Wilson, another weekend.
Elijah Moore, zero targets, the offense.
I think the offense is underachieving and the defense is overachieving.
Now, the good news is, we know their GM's good.
Is Sala going to be one of these Sean McDermott guys where they may not be able to develop the O-Line and the run game?
But if you, you know, you start looking at them.
Get your starting quarterback back.
This is my thing.
When you hire a young coach, the first warning sign, Nathaniel Hackett at Denver or Brent and Venables, Oklahoma, they can't get their side of the ball right.
So it took him a year, but the defensive side, they play with, it looks a little bit like those Niners teams he came from.
Yes.
The energy, the collisions, the physicality.
You can see the Jets are, if you had to guess, what's their head coach do.
You'd be like, oh, that's a defensive team.
Yeah.
And by the way, Chicago similarly, I worry about their offense.
but when I watch the Bears, I said this on Friday morning.
The Bears are really well coached.
They just have limitations offensive.
So like the Bears and the Jets, we don't like their offense,
but you can see the coach's imprint.
You probably have the right guy if that's the case.
Yeah.
I would agree with all that.
I'll just say the word about Zach Wilson.
So against Pittsburgh, remember his first start,
he threw a terrible red zone interception.
And since then they've really locked down Zach.
He's not doing a lot.
And they're saying we can move with special teams.
We'll win with defense and we'll run the football.
It seems to be working, Colin.
Four and two.
They got Denver this week.
Trip to a mile high.
Denver on a short week with the worst coach in the league in Hackett.
J-Mac with the news.
Very exciting.
Very exciting.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd-Lie News.
You know, it is interesting sitting watching Buffalo and Kansas City and that I don't think
there's a great team in the league.
And I think this is the difference between pro and
college football. The last 10 years in college football, it just felt like mostly Alabama's just
had better players. And you lose some suspense. The reason this year in college football is so good
that I think Michigan now is as good as Ohio State. And Tennessee is now as good as Alabama.
And that's the strength of the NFL. It doesn't matter market size. Like in baseball right now,
the ratings are going to be not very good. You know, if the Yankees lose, forget it.
The Dodgers are out. The Mets are out. The Braves are out. The baseball is very much.
market reliant. The NBA is very star reliant. It didn't matter that LeBron played in Cleveland or
Miami. It doesn't matter. The bottom line, he's a star. People watch him. But the NFL secret
sauce has always been big market, small market, it doesn't matter. I mean, Buffalo and Kansas City
is the best rivalry in American sports. They're both small markets. And as I'm watching them
last night is that it's really not who's the best team anymore. I don't even, honestly,
I don't look at that rivalry as a who's the best team.
It's basically who gets the ball last.
I don't even care where the game's at.
I don't care if it's in Kansas City or Buffalo.
I think these quarterbacks and these teams and coaches are so good.
They negate home field.
I honestly felt like Buffalo got a bad call.
Chris Jones tripping was uncalled and they still won.
So this rivalry is really not about home field.
It's really not about who's the better roster.
It is kind of a who gets the ball last and who makes the ball last.
and who makes the big chess move in this rivalry.
Buffalo added Von Miller.
Buffalo got more support with their run game last night than Kansas City.
They win.
Now it's the Chief's move when they meet again.
They've met five teams, five times here,
and every time they meet, it gets closer.
This rivalry is now, who gets the ball last?
I don't care where the game is played.
I don't care.
You know, Buffalo, last night, Josh Allen just got a little,
a little more support than Patrick Mahomes did.
from his defense and from his run game, and he won.
Now it's time for the Chiefs to make a move.
But that rivalry to me is just, it's what the essence of the NFL is, market size doesn't matter.
The rosters are, I mean, you watch these games week to week.
You have no idea.
Like, I think the Chargers will win tonight.
If Denver won, I would not be surprised at all.
Did you notice the Chiefs started two rookie cornerbacks and left them alone on islands against Diggs and Davis?
That's a little crazy, no?
Yeah, a little bit.
All right, Sean Payton's around the corner.

Sean Payton joining us in J-Mack.
So, you know, there were some people that were a little upset coach.
You know, Brady at a wedding, it was all over the internet.
Bobcraft.
Congrats to Bob.
And then he did miss the morning Saturday meeting, which I don't know the importance of it.
And so he's barking at people in the offensive line.
And there was a lot of blowback.
A lot of people were like, hey, man, you can't respond.
goes both ways.
Brady wasn't there Saturday morning.
You used to fly and watch all your son's high school football games on Friday in Dallas,
fly back on that 1 a.m. flight Saturday morning.
Are you bummed to...
Well, I said this yesterday.
I think...
I don't think we even discuss it or flinch at it,
if not for the 10 days already missed at training camp.
And look, he's earning.
the right for personal days. You know, when you're, when you're someone like Tom and he's going to
handle some, whatever it is, it comes up. I was saying this earlier. You have a large roster of
65 guys and coaching staff. These are the things every year. There are funerals. There are weddings.
There are births. And the player would always come up and say, hey, you know, my wife's going to be
going into labor. We'd have a plan in place if it was in season. The funerals, unfortunately,
Unfortunately, you know, those, we deal with those.
So, yeah, I was a little surprised that,
because Friday is the night where the players and coaches are finished in the building.
Your kind of work is done Saturday, their morning meetings and a walk through.
I was a little surprised that he didn't return, you know, on a private plane.
Right.
So, but he may have very well had something that he needed to tend to there,
and that would be between Tom and Todd.
And so we never felt the need.
But it only becomes newsworthy because of the training camp days missed.
And then, you know, they lose the game.
If he had played well yesterday, we'd be on to topic B right now.
Right, right.
We wouldn't even be, you know, addressing topic A.
And it's part of the business that we're in.
So I said this, and I don't think it's a reach.
And I said it before the season.
I said, I don't know if Aaron's built for this roster.
It's a bunch of young kids, it's three rookies.
You've got to be patient.
And this is not a knock at Aaron.
Never married, no kids.
No, you know, his life, no sacrifices to the married the kids.
This is going to take patience, a father figure, hold some hands here.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam Jay.
Now you're finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
They're going to make mistakes the same ones over and over.
They played at Reno.
And, you know, FCS or FBS schools.
And so I look at this Green Bay roster and Sean, it's not getting better.
Well, there were two games that surprised me yesterday a lot.
This was one of them.
You know, they had a tough loss the week before in London versus the Giants, right?
And this is a game back at Lambeau that you see them, you know, kind of pivoting and getting the win they needed.
Look, I don't think it's just the receiver room.
that's an easy
now when you lose
Devante Adams
sure there's a couple teams that I think
really miss
they're there
he's one of them
I think at Tennessee
that trade they made
with Philadelphia
they told you it hurt
oh Brable told you
you could see the press conference well we get to see
it live now and we get to see
the help it's given Philly with
the addition
and then I believe this
I think
I think Grankowski for what he did in Tampa's offense,
people didn't realize and who watches how good a tight-end blocks.
Right, right, right.
None of us do.
Right.
Because we're consumed with fantasy.
And so when the tight end blocks the de-gap,
we don't get four points in our fantasy,
and the run hits for eight yards.
But when you don't have a tight end in this league that can block,
it is hard to run the ball.
We're seeing that in Tampa Bay.
When you don't have a tight end in the tight end
the tight red area on third down.
So there's a few teams last year offensively
that were kind of here.
Yes.
And here we are week six and we're like, what happened?
And it happened right in front of us.
But the Green Bay result, I think, was a little surprising.
And credit the Jets.
Oh, they're playing with incredible energy, college energy.
Yeah, like, I want to see the Jets Giants play Wednesday night.
Just a scrimmage.
That's right.
and then go back to the normal schedule.
Well, you're watching two coaches build cultures.
Yeah, and it's fun to watch.
Yeah.
So Philadelphia may not run the offense you would, or maybe you would with this personnel.
My question is, is it sustainable?
Does this offense work in January, in February?
Or, because there's some explosion plays happening in the first six weeks,
and then all of a sudden everybody gets the analytics and the trends.
Is this a smoke and mirrors offense?
No, I know this firsthand.
We've seen them.
Now, they weren't six and oh with the.
that time, but they run the ball scheme-wise and game plan-wise and skill set-wise,
players, coaches, as well as anyone.
And to their credit, I've seen Hertz grow enormously here in a year and a half his play.
The confidence they're playing with, I've always felt like the key for them to play in February
is going to be how well their defense plays.
They run the ball extremely well.
And then we see and you can always, there's a few teams like this.
All right.
Everyone in our league has to stop the run.
Let's just start with that, right?
And yet the 49ers, generally speaking, find ways to have eight and 12-yard runs
that other teams don't have.
And you look at it and like, what are they doing differently in Philadelphia the same way?
And so that travels into the colder months.
That travels into January.
Certainly they're one of the teams that,
that you're going to have to beat in the NFC and look, they're unbeaten.
And I think the other thing now is, man, the skill set outside with the receivers in the
tight end, if you said, give me the best X, Y, and Z combination.
Now, X and Z are receivers in the NFL.
Yeah.
And the tight ends the Y.
You could come up with a good argument that their three equals anyone else's.
So Mac Jones and Bailey's happy.
I look at him and I think maybe Mac is more talented.
That doesn't mean he's doing exactly schematically what the coaches want him to.
And when I watched it yesterday, I'm like, what do I care about talent?
If I'm Belichick, here's what we've schemed.
Get it there fast.
And I watch him, and I don't even think it's a quarterback controversy.
They didn't give anything up to get Matt.
They didn't give anything up to get Bailey.
If I'm a coach and my guy...
It's the perfect...
team. And I say this, and it's a credit to New England, to build, to ownership, to the epitome of
functionality. It's the perfect team for a player like Bailey Zappy to be at where, and we used to say
this after the draft and the teams all together. And in the meeting, you have your draft picks.
You have the guys you signed after the draft, free agents. So you have the fourth round picks and Bailey
Zappy and the seventh round
round picks and the first rounders there.
They're all there and then the free agents
and the free agents that are
veterans from other teams.
And we
would always say, hey, that's
you guys are here now and that's the
science and the art of procuring
talent. How you
arrived here will have no bearing on how
much you play. Now, we can say that
but teams
double down on mistakes
all the time in our league and it's frustrating
to watch and you see it happening.
Bill Belichick is just going to
go by what he sees.
I mean, and just
and so not having had a chance
to really evaluate Bailey Zappy
other than in the green room and watching him,
but if Bill feels like
that player gives them the best chance
to win, that's who's going to play.
You know, we spent so much time discussing
is there a controversy in Dallas?
No, there isn't.
There's a gap here.
Yes.
All right.
to realize a little bit.
But, you know, Cooper did his job.
They went four and one.
It's great.
All right.
Held the fort and in some.
But back to your point with Bailey, Zappy, there could be no better place to be undrafted or a late round pick, prove your worth, and there will be no politics or whatever relative to you getting on the field.
He's going to play.
And we said all the time, we're selfish.
We want to win.
and your locker room is empowered when that happens.
Conversely, when those players in the locker room feel like you're playing someone
that isn't necessarily the best,
or they haven't seen that relative to someone else on the roster,
maybe because you were drafted higher,
the opposite can take place.
Casey Buffalo, when you're in big rivalry games,
you certainly had it with Brady and Tampa New Orleans.
Do you coach different?
Well, there's just a sense of urgency.
And we always got to ask this question.
We played Atlanta.
It's a rivalry.
I'm like, ah, it's a regional game.
First off, I think of college football with rivalry.
Sure.
In the NFL, we see these swings and pendulums.
You know, there was a stretch where, indeed, New England, Manning.
That was a great, like, six-year stretch, whatever it was.
And then we went through the Ravens.
Steelers. Oh, that was a low-scoring great game. Outstanding stuff. Yeah. All right. We shared that a little with
Tampa Bay. And clearly, clearly, 2022 right now, one of the ones that we all want to watch,
and I think we're going to see it again is Buffalo, Kansas City. Yeah. But the unique thing is
there's a good chance the next time we see it, it's going to be in Buffalo. And when you start
doing the math, I think they're 11 and 2 at home.
in their last 13 games.
It'll be cold.
That's a hard place to play now, buddy.
I mean, you go into that stadium and, oh, my gosh, it's difficult.
And that's the significant of yesterday's game.
Look, both those teams are, it was a fantastic game.
At first it started out low scoring and then you just knew.
And the other thing is, like five minutes left in the game, you thought,
normally this would be like a quarter.
You know, but for these teams, it'll last forever.
I think the significant of that game yesterday has a chance to be home field.
Yeah.
Sean Payton, I wish we could take it to the next hour.
We probably could.
The show's called The Herd.
I could make an executive decision.
So I want to take a break.
Do you got anything to do?
I've got nothing to do.
And the show's called The Herd.
Like, who are we reporting to here?
Exactly.
I haven't told my boss is that for six years.
Where are they today?
Home, watching this wonderful show.
and let's break for gold bullion or whatever it is we break for.
Oh, you know, one of the things I want you to think about as we go to break.
The Saints Bengals game was very interesting yesterday because I just think Burroughs got something
and I'm not sure you can coach it.
And I'm going to ask you this on the other side.
There are guys late in game.
They just, I once saw this with a race car driver.
They put a heart monitor on him.
And his heart rate didn't go up the faster he went, even in.
collisions. And I watch Burrell, and I swear to God, he's better with two left than the first quarter.
I swear he's better. Okay, we're going to take a break. Top of hour number three. Sean Payton continues.
We all get smarter live in Los Angeles. It's the hurt. Yeah, we'll just shoot the bull.
