Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule. of two. Listen to Stuff to Blow Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam Jay.
Starting point is 00:01:41 And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it with our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black. people.
Starting point is 00:01:59 Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Heard. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:02:26 Ah, here we go. It's hour two. We're live in Los Angeles. the herd wherever you may be and however you may be listening i heart radio fox sports radio and f s one uh boston vanquished the miami heat last night series to tied it to a piece still feel like dallas is going to win a game in this series uh warriors can go for the sweep tonight it's in dallas you're playing for pride at this point a team that trails three o is never won i think ever in the conference finals or maybe even in playoff history i saw a number the other day
Starting point is 00:03:01 like 146 and 0. So Dallas is not going to win the series. The series is over. I could see them getting a game tonight. Yeah. I kind of hope they do. Yeah, so do. Just for extra basketball.
Starting point is 00:03:12 Otherwise, by the way, the finals. The Warriors could think to themselves, we sweep tonight. We're an old team. We get a week off. Oh, no. I don't think that the Warriors are going to mail it in. I think they're going to try and get this over with.
Starting point is 00:03:24 You don't want to play with anybody. Still a great team. I don't think they have a chance to win the series. But why play extra games? could have done now. But for that same reason, I think Dallas is going to, I would assume that Dallas is going to take tonight. Yeah. Report, Browns have offered to sweeten the pot in the Baker Mayfield trade.
Starting point is 00:03:44 So according to Albert Breer, Monday morning quarterback, Cleveland has offered to eat a good chunk of Mayfield's salary in order to help facilitate a trade. The question to me on this is Baker Mayfield above the shoulders. Does he view himself as a franchise guy or a bridge guy? He views himself as a franchise guy. So you can't bring him in to compete for the job. He's not going to do it with Deshawn Watson. He's not going to do it, period. That's not who he is.
Starting point is 00:04:08 He views himself as a former number one pick, a guy that won in Cleveland. He's got a chip on his shoulder. That's good. It's all good. But he does not view himself as a bridge guy. That's why the Pittsburgh Steelers talked about Baker, but in the end got Tribesky and a rookie. Tribesky will play the game.
Starting point is 00:04:26 You know, this is what you're seeing right now. Drew Locke and Gino Smith, you could do it. But Drew Locke and Baker Mayfield, those egos together in Seattle, would be a tire fire. Here's the reality with Baker right now. There's really, and we said this right after the season, be careful, Baker. There's not going to be a market for Baker Mayfield. Remember, next year's quarterback class is great. It is six guys.
Starting point is 00:04:52 The over-under on first round quarterbacks next year is six and a half. There's three I love, three I'll wait and see. but there's a lot of teams, for instance, Houston, Atlanta, Seattle are positioning themselves for the next draft. So let's look at the entire NFL landscape, all the teams. I would argue 26 teams have a quarterback that they view as the franchise guy or he's our guy for a couple of years. That would include Matt Ryan and Carson Wentz. That's virtually the entire league. Again, Tua.
Starting point is 00:05:22 They're not moving off Tua for Baker Mayfield now. So that teams out. And I think Tua is going to have some success. with those offensive pieces. So Miami's decision is going to be at the end of the year. Hey, two is actually pretty darn good. So that leaves the Texans, the Giants, the Seahawks, the Saints, the Falcons, and the Panthers. But as I just said, I think Seattle, Houston, and Atlanta are going to ride with their guys
Starting point is 00:05:49 and they're positioning themselves for next year. The owners are comfortable with it. You know, Texans, it depends on how the young guy from Stanford plays. He may end up being the guy, but they're positioning themselves. That leaves you with the Giants, the Saints, and the Panthers. The problem being with the Giants, the Saints, and the Panthers is Baker would have to compete for that job with Sam Darnold, with Daniel Jones, with James Winston. He don't want to compete.
Starting point is 00:06:15 And so I think those teams think Baker is better than the guy they have, but that's not his personality. And that is why I always say with quarterback's personality matters. I don't care if my receivers get along with other players. I got eight of them. I never understand when all the fanboys out there defend the Johnny Manzell's and the bakers, I'm like, you do get, if the first team doesn't go right, you're going to struggle in this league to get a second job because you're too big of a personality to be a backup. You can't Johnny Manzell back.
Starting point is 00:06:49 You couldn't Tim Tebow, I didn't worry about the ego. You couldn't have Tim Tebow as a viable backup. I mean, Mark Sanchez admitted with the Jets, it was too. distracting. So you can come in with all this hutzpah and all this arrogance and all this, you know, branding, but you better get the best one right, the first one right. Guys like Chase Daniel can be in this league forever. Marcus Marriota doesn't have a brand. There's like Colt McCoy. You can be in this league for a long time. Tyrod Taylor. If you're just like, hey man, I love football. I'll work in the room. I mean, Marcus Mariotta is actually getting a
Starting point is 00:07:25 second chance now to be the guy. Now, I don't think he'll end up being healthy for the entire season, but he's getting that run, and a lot of it is he works well with others. So come in with all your ads, come in with all your hutspah, but if the first gig doesn't go right, you become a bridge at best. Nobody wants to build around you, and we don't think we can bring in the room to be a backup. Because Baker is absolutely one of the 25 most talented quarterbacks in the league. What's the market? And T.J. Hosmanjada said this yesterday on the show. Here's the issue. He's a solid quarterback. It's his personality in the way he talks and just grows about things.
Starting point is 00:08:09 I don't mind the attitude that Baker has, and I've said this a thousand times. Baker, you got this chip on your shoulder. You were the first pick, bro. You were the first pick of the draft. Why do you have this chip on your show? What happened in high school and college, that is no longer the case. You were the number one pick in the NFL draft. Stop talking and go play. Now, if Cleveland picks up, gobbles up, eats up a majority of this contract, he's going to get a gig somewhere. He's just too good and too cheap not to give a job. I'm not sure where it will be.
Starting point is 00:08:38 Maybe it is Atlanta. Maybe they're like, Marcus, you've been a backup before you're a backup again. But that's what I say. The media falls in love with a quarterback out of college. The brand, Cam Newton, Tim Tebow, Johnny Mansell, Baker Mayfield, the brand. If you don't get the first one right, That career evaporates really fast. It's a very cruel world for quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:09:02 I don't care of linebackers, running backs. Anybody, safeties. You can bring all that ego from college. I kind of like it. I kind of like the edge. Not at quarterback. You're the face of the franchise. Quentin Richardson's co-host of the Knuckleheads podcast for the Players Tribune.
Starting point is 00:09:18 13 years in the NBA, former director of player development for the Detroit Pistons. He is now joining us. So I'm just going to lay the Celtics. in the heat out for you. As somebody who's been in control of an NBA team's player development, I said this about the Celtics. Chris Middleton, getting hurt was a break. Miami-Lowry hurt.
Starting point is 00:09:39 Butler hurt is a break. Philadelphia, Brooklyn, a little bit of a chemistry mess. This is the year for Boston to meet, Quentin, to make the run. If they can't win this series, do you start looking inside the organization saying, listen, we like all of our young guys, but we have hit. a ceiling here with Jalen and Marcus and Tatum and Williams. What do you do if they lose this series to rickety older injured Miami? I don't, I don't get, do anything drastic.
Starting point is 00:10:11 Man, I feel like this is really their first run at it under coach E. Mae Woodhocla and his leadership and the new coaching staff and everything going the way that they're doing things. So if I'm them, win-lose-a-draw, I'm right back to the right-back- at it next year. You know, you're trying to obviously tinkle with things that make things better, but I don't mess with Tatum and Brown and the court guys. I try and add to it. Okay, so now let's pivot to the Mavericks. There's a lot of talk Quentin about what to bring with Luca. And listen, his usage rate is really high. So he's not going to work with everybody.
Starting point is 00:10:46 You can't get him another high usage rate guide. It's going to be the right compliment of player. Like the other day, Joy and I talked about Donovan Mitchell. And I'm like, Donovan plays defense. I think his Utah thing, they may be moving on. Rudy Gobert gets mentioned. He's a great defender. Is either one of those Utah guys to you interesting with Luca? I think Rudy Gober would be interesting with him, not Donovan, because like you said, they both have high usage rates. I feel like Donovan needs to ball not as much as Luca, but he needs it a lot more than he would get it playing with Luca.
Starting point is 00:11:20 But I think Rudy could fit because obviously he's a defensive big. back in the paint as far as like a true big that can, you know, protect the paint, protect the rim and go get rebounds. But I think, you know, Rudy is a big that doesn't necessarily need post-ups. He's a good guy who can pick and roll. He's a good, good live thread at the rim. And then, like you say, he's going to be that lockdown defender in the paint three-time defensive player the year.
Starting point is 00:11:44 I mean, I think he would fit great with Dallas. Does it bother you that Luca doesn't come in shape and doesn't give a great effort consistently on the defensive end? The conditioning thing is more of a concern for me. I mean, there's plenty of, you know, very offensive dominant players of his caliber or more that, you know, don't play the greatest defense. I mean, I think, you know, he can work on his effort with it. But I think more so, you know, him being so young and the conditioning is the bigger deal for me. Because usually when you were at your youngest age is when it's easier for you to come in, you still looking slim and trim.
Starting point is 00:12:21 And so for him to be this young and battling that now, it works. it worries me for the future that if he doesn't get a hold on to it, because I mean the natural progressions, we all get, you know, as we get older, we gain weight and things like that. So if he's battling that right now, that just is kind of in my mind for the future of them. So you look at the Warriors team, and we've been talking about this on the show, that they really do a good job doing a couple of things. One, they surround Steph Curry with a lot of guys that can defend multiple positions.
Starting point is 00:12:51 Peyton's going to come back in the finals. Wiggins is very good. Dre's been good forever. Even Kevin Durant's a long-willing defender. Looney now is an excellent rebounder playing much better defense. So they know what Steph is and what he isn't. The other thing is they draft and develop really well. They always find these guys.
Starting point is 00:13:09 Cumminga's another guy, I think, has a great upside. When you look at the Warriors dynasty, it started pre-KD, then they had it with KD. Many people suggest after this one they're done. Do you see a tale on this? How long does it last? Because Dre's older, Clay's older, Steph's older. What do you make in the next five years, the next five for Golden State? I mean, I think they dictate their own destiny, man.
Starting point is 00:13:38 I mean, people didn't expect them to be back here at this point. They didn't expect Clay to come back and play as well as he's played or be as healthy. So, I mean, for me, I can't put a ceiling on these guys and try and say they're going to be done at this point or that point. I think, you know, I mean, we're seeing the, the, the, the, uh, new dynamic of what a prime in your career is. You know, LeBron is at 37 years old, 17, 18 season still going strong. So, I mean, I can't discount and say that these guys are going to be done because, I mean, the way that Steph plays, the way that Clay play, you know, Jemont, they don't really rely on
Starting point is 00:14:12 some dynamic athletic ability. I mean, Steph is the greatest shooter. Clay is probably the next best or one of the top best shooters ever. So, I mean, they rely heavily on their shooting ability. So I think with that being said, and the way that they play selfless and they really play team basketball, it allows them to go into, I don't know when it's going to be over. But, I mean, I wouldn't just say that it's going to be over like the next three to four years because I feel like they still got a long time and a lot of basketball left in them.
Starting point is 00:14:39 Wiggins is an interesting player, Quentin, because he didn't quite have that dog or that alpha to be a one. And some guys do and some guys don't. I mean, you played with Dwayne Wade. He felt like a one the minute he showed up in Miami. That's just his genetic makeup, his personality. But Wiggins doesn't have that. He's just talented. Did long-term Wiggins, are you surprised he's worked this well with the Warriors?
Starting point is 00:15:07 Did you think he was kind of done and it was just going to be he'd disappear into the basketball heavens? No, I felt like when he went to the Warriors, I felt like that was the perfect situation because it was just what you said. Like he was, you know, being the number one overall pick, a lot of stuff comes with. that and they expect certain things. And, you know, Andrew Wiggins is a great player. He's an all-star, but he wasn't the LeBron James transcended change, you know, change a franchise by himself, but he still, that doesn't make him not, you know, he's still a max type player, extremely valuable player.
Starting point is 00:15:39 He's a great two-way player, and he's shown with this team that he's a great piece. And, yeah, his personality isn't to be outspoken or, you know, like the, you know, poker's chest out type guy. but that doesn't mean that he can't come in and impact this team. And I think he is one of the biggest, you know, biggest, like, surprises. And, like, he's a wild car for them every time. Like, you don't know when he's going to go for 20 plus 10 rebounds or things like that. And it makes them that much more of a threat to have somebody like him that can pop off like that at any time.
Starting point is 00:16:10 Yeah, he really is a wild card. Now, you're a studio analyst for the Orlando Magic, and we're part of a player development. You ran that for the Pistons. So we have an NBA drag. it feels like to me there's four or five guys who are really, really nice players. Jaden Ivy's super athletic, but I'm not sure. I don't know if he's a one. I think the kid, Duke's got a kid.
Starting point is 00:16:36 People like the kid at Auburn. Your magic have the number one pick. Is there a player that you look at at a college and go, that guy I can build around for a decade? He gives me the multitude, defend, score different way. Because I think in the NBA now, Quentin, can you do multiple things on both end? Can you defend multiple positions? Can you score the ball outside?
Starting point is 00:16:57 Can you in transition? Is there a guy for you in this draft like that? For me, I mean, obviously you look at the top three guys and they got, you know, they got Chet Holmgren, Jabari Smith, and Paolo. For me, I mean, what I've been hearing and seeing, it looks like it's going to be Chet. I mean, you know, he can play four, I guess, five. Well, I'm not sure his position, but I'm not. I mean, for me, when you look at Orlando Magic, they've got a lot of young talent and, you know, a lot of young players that's been drafted high and then guys are going to be coming back from injuries.
Starting point is 00:17:32 So, I mean, my thing with this pick is as long as the player, whichever guy they get, they come in hungry and they're ready to play hard. I mean, all three of those guys are talented. So, I mean, whichever way they go, I think it should be okay. But my thing is that they can come in and be durable as far as, like, available to play and be able to withstand. you know, this hectic 82 schedule without missing a lot of games, and they're going to come in with a high motor, it's going to be nothing but good for this magic team because they got a lot of young players with a lot of energy,
Starting point is 00:18:01 everybody's playing hard and trying to learn and get better. And I think if they get a guy, one of these guys, and they come in and they have that energy and they have that work ethic to get better, I think it's just going to be a big bonus for the team. Yeah, boy, Jammari-Smith's highlight tape is good. He can get up. Quentin Richardson, he's got a podcast.
Starting point is 00:18:19 It's called Knuckleheads with Darius Miles. Great seeing you. Thanks for coming on, and I appreciate it. Thanks for having me. You bet. Quentin Richardson, former NBA player for 13 years, he played with Dwayne Wade. A lot of people play with Dwayne Wade. It's played for a long time. Yeah, and a lot of people are lucky they played with Dwayne Wade. One more herd?
Starting point is 00:18:37 The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeart radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jek. And I'm Alex English.
Starting point is 00:20:35 Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because, a crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
Starting point is 00:20:56 So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Starting point is 00:21:45 And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Starting point is 00:22:00 Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Starting point is 00:22:16 Search learn the hard way and listen now. Saturday, it's a USFL primetime showdown between the New Orleans Breakers and Jeff Fisher's Michigan Panthers. Kickoff is at 9 Eastern on FS1. Then Sunday, the league leading Birmingham Stallions take on the Pittsburgh mallers at 2 Eastern on Fox. So I saw this story. Remember when I used to love the Patriots? One of the things I always loved about the New England Patriots, they were ahead of the league on stuff. Belichick went and seized the middle of the field with the late Aaron Hernandez and Gronk.
Starting point is 00:22:54 It used to be if you had to score passing the ball, you made your big plays up the sidelines. Belichick moved it in. The Patriots were way above average in terms of they never fumbled. It was like they went 20 years and rarely fumbled. They were just smarter. The left-footed punter. Just angles on stuff that was better than other teams. They always had good offensive line play.
Starting point is 00:23:15 Dante Scarnacia. Now I feel like they've fallen in love with themselves in their culture, and I don't understand what they're doing. Their draft was weird. There are things in my life that I just couldn't wrap my brains around. I was in local TV for years, then at ESPN, and there was this talk about 3D television. And I always thought, you're going to ask my mom to put on glasses to watch TV?
Starting point is 00:23:43 This is stupid. It bombed. It was a waste of. money. I didn't get clear Pepsi. It's called Sprite. I didn't understand it. Then there's things I understand, but I don't want any part of the metaverse. I like interacting with people. I don't want to stare at my computer screen or phone the rest of my life. The Patriots are somewhere in the middle. Like I don't get it, but I kind of do, and I don't want any part of it, which is they don't have an offensive coordinator. They have probably next to Green Bay the weakest wide receiving core in the
Starting point is 00:24:13 league as the league pivots and transitions to a more weapons-based league because of rules, regulations on what you can do defensively. Like, I get what they're doing, doubling down on their culture. But when your quarterback, Mack Jones doesn't have the ability athletically, and this is indisputable, to make plays off script. And you also have among the weakest playmakers off script, how do you win? you become a 1979 NFL team. You have to score on long ball controlling drives.
Starting point is 00:24:49 Kansas City can do that, and so can Buffalo and the Chargers and the Rams and the Packers, but they can also score quickly. New England has very little chance to go over the top, make plays with their feet, a super fast wide receiver beats coverage. They can score one way. They're not going to win shootouts regularly. They already can't get Josh Allen off the field. The last time they played, he didn't punt in his 10 possessions, 8, 10, 11, whatever it was.
Starting point is 00:25:16 So, like, I don't get it. I don't get not resigning J.C. Jackson. I don't get not having an offensive coordinator. It's the OTAs. He's young. No O.C. They're going to struggle to play from behind. We said this about the Phoenix Suns.
Starting point is 00:25:35 You can win a lot of games the way Phoenix plays, but because they don't have three-point shooters, Phoenix isn't built to come back quickly. They live on twos, not threes. New England now is built to play with the lead, and they will lead the Jets both times they play. But they will trail Buffalo at some point. And now with Miami's weapons, they'll trail Miami at sometimes. And they could trail the chargers or the Raiders or the Broncos or the Chiefs or the Bills or the Ravens.
Starting point is 00:26:02 They can't score quickly. This offense is not built to score quickly. And that's why I just, part of it I guess, get like the metaverse like I get it I don't want any part of it part of it is 3D TV clear Pepsi what are you doing like you just can't build a football team this way the draft was weird they're not fast enough they let go of their elite corner it feels like they're doubling down on culture that's the spurs right you're not viable anymore you got to have stars got to have easy buckets got to have easy touchdowns you don't want to have
Starting point is 00:26:41 to out brilliant people every week. And as brilliant as Belichick was during the great years, those Randy Moss teams, they are also like getting you freebies. Gronk was giving you some freebies. The late Aaron Hernandez got you some freebies. There are no freebies with this offense. Good luck in an AFC now that is loaded with playmakers, not only on the outside, but at quarterback.
Starting point is 00:27:07 Bengals, Chiefs, bills. Chargers, Raiders. Raiders may finish fourth in their division. Miami now has multiple perimeter playmakers. Joy with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 00:27:27 Well, speaking of Miami, he dropped game four in blowout fashion last night. It was painful, particularly that first quarter. 10282 loss to the Celtics, but series is even at two. It's been a very interesting series. Miami has a lot of banged-up players, as do the Celtics at this point. That's kind of been the theme all season with Miami. It has, hasn't it? But they still managed to finish first in the east,
Starting point is 00:27:50 which is why Eric Spolstra is confidence that tomorrow's Pivotal Game 5 is still in the works for the heat. We've proven, you know, that we can do it. Like I said, the margin for error, either team, you know, whatever, they've done to us, we can do it to them. You know, and none of us are happy about what happened tonight, but we've proven that we can find solutions offensively in a lot of different ways. It does feel bleak, and this is how we react game-to-game in the series, but it is even, he is right.
Starting point is 00:28:32 Now, the question you and I discuss this, health is going to be big in this series, because neither team's great. I mean, Golden State is without pay. and a great defensive player, they're fine. They just have more guys. So my question is, Marcus Smart should be back for the Celtics. They'll be at full strength.
Starting point is 00:28:51 Who is PJ Tucker out? Everyone is banged up at this point. The roster. They didn't have Tyler Hero last night, which whatever you think of Tyler Hero, he is a better defensive player than Duncan Robinson, which you pretty much saw why Duncan hasn't been getting a lot of minutes.
Starting point is 00:29:06 Yeah, he's a liability. Running around, fouling people, and not knocking down shots the way that he is paid to do. But the biggest question for me with this heat team, really all series long has been BAM. Because you can't rely on Jimmy Butler to go out there and get you 40 points a night. No.
Starting point is 00:29:22 That's not how successful teams thrive. You're the number two. Bam was averaging 19.1 points per game during the regular season. In this series, he's averaging 14 points per game. They need him on offense. We know BAM is a great defensive player. Offensively, they need his scoring. This has been kind of, remember all year I kept saying,
Starting point is 00:29:44 I don't really get the heat like it's a culture play. My takeaway is Butler is a great athlete who can score. Bam's a great athlete who can disappear. I don't feel like, I feel like with Boston I get certainties almost every game, most quarters. With Miami, I feel like after Butler, and now he's got knee inflammation, I don't get a lot of absolutes. And that shouldn't be the case with Bam.
Starting point is 00:30:07 That should not be the case. Bam needs to score more. Now in game three, he had 31 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, and four seal. So that was the biggest game for him this series, obviously. But they need more from him. Yesterday was an offensive disaster, obviously. PJ Tucker had no points. Jimmy Butler had six. Kyle Lowry, three, Max Trues, zero points.
Starting point is 00:30:25 So that's not going to work against anyone in the postseason. Victor Oladipo was only the one that kept him in the game with 23 points, 30 minutes off the bench. But not a good night for the heat. So the Lakers have been toying with trading away Russell Westbrook all offseason after an awful first year in L.A. But apparently, teams are holding firm and demanding the Lakers include at least one first round pick to take on Westbrook's remaining deal. He has a $47.1 million dollar player option next season. He would be the fourth highest player next season if that option is exercised. As of right now, L.A. has no intention of including a first round pick to facilitate a deal.
Starting point is 00:31:03 that's kind of why, to me, they are having conversations with new coaches about what they're going to do if Westbrook has to stay on the team because you can't give up any more assets if you're the Lakers. You've already sold everything. You've already, you know,
Starting point is 00:31:17 you got your championship and now you're in this situation. You made the decision to bring in Russell Westbroke, which I think will probably go down as the worst trade in NBA history. It's the worst trade in Laker history. This is the situation that you're in. So you almost have to run it back
Starting point is 00:31:30 with Russell Westbrook, Anthony Davis and LeBron James. You almost don't have another choice, which is why the coaching search is so interesting to me, because we keep talking about Doc Rivers as if he's on the market. He's not. He is currently employed. They're not going to give up any assets to get Doc Rivers.
Starting point is 00:31:44 Also, Doc Rivers coached for the Celtics and the Clippers. Now he's going to go to the Lakers. I don't see that. I don't care how many stars he's coached. There are some histories here with those organizations and the Lakers that he has had experience with. So he's not even on the market. He's not even available.
Starting point is 00:32:02 So that's step one. He'd have to get fired. They've said they're not letting him go. So I don't even think he's going to be available. But the other options are Darbinham, Terry Stott's, Kenny Atkinson. Well, the Lakers brand is big enough and their loyal fans. They have built so much equity up through the years. It's like the Seahawks in this year.
Starting point is 00:32:23 They can just tank. Nobody's selling their season tickets. It's a great brand in Seattle. No, that's not the problem. So you can sit through an awful year with Westbrook. You're not going to lose season ticket holders. I don't. I mean, now, you'll be uninteresting.
Starting point is 00:32:33 In a wildly competent, distracted L.A. market, you'll be in the back page. But you're not going to lose any, you know, you may lose brand share, but you're not going to lose market share. The Lakers can be awful for one more year. My question is, why did you fire Frank Vogel? Why are you paying him a year not to coach if these are the options for the coaches that you're going to bring in? Well, what are you doing? Yeah. Like, to me, that's just escaping.
Starting point is 00:33:01 goat for the front office and ownership. We got to do something because everyone's mad. Let's just fire Frank Vogel. Who are you hiring? It's making a difference. Terry Stott's an offensive version of Frank Vogel. It's the difference. Frank Vogel's been there. He won a championship two years ago. It's nonsense. So after
Starting point is 00:33:17 a long off season, Russell Wilson will start season in Seattle. But this time, it will be on the opposite side of the ball. He played 10 seasons for Pete Carroll and the Seahawks. So it would be understandable if he had some emotions. I'm calling this the Petty Super Bowl. I actually can't wait for this game. And I love that it's the first week of the season before Seattle's all out of it.
Starting point is 00:33:35 But Russ is all business and he's cheating week one like any other game. Obviously, Seattle's been the world to me over the past 10 years. I think for me it's not emotional though. It's got to be non-emotion. You've got to be able to go into it with understanding that it's just ball. He's about going on there and trying to play the best football for our football team here and going to try to go win. Seattle does not have four players that would start for Denver. I'm dead serious. D.K. Matt Kaff, yes. An interior offensive lineman I like, yes. Maybe a safety.
Starting point is 00:34:06 People are going to understand very quickly why Russell left. It's going to be Brady, Tampa. They're going to be so good right out of the gate. Everybody's going to go, oh, yeah. And they have the easiest schedule in the league for the first nine weeks. So they're going to come out of the gate swinging. Now, they do have a new head coach. So that is the difference between Brady and Tampa and Stafford with McViv.
Starting point is 00:34:31 Like those coaches were already there. Everyone else didn't have to adjust to a new system. So there is that element of it that I think will make things interesting. Not saying that they won't so be competitive, but there is another obstacle that Denver is overcoming that the Rams and the Bucks did not have to overcome, which is a new head coach and first year head coach. But yeah, the Broncos are going to be a team that we talk about a lot this season. I do wonder, though, once the season, once we get into the,
Starting point is 00:35:01 later part of the season, which is much more difficult. Obviously, they're in an incredibly tough division. There's a lot of pressure on Russell Wilson in this situation, which he asked for. Yeah. And we've been talking about the Broncos like they're a quarterback away for a long time. But this will be a great start to the season against Seattle. And there will be lots of storylines and lots of good quotes leading into this game. Joy with the news.
Starting point is 00:35:22 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lie News. Interesting article in The Ringer. And they talk about how can Lucas, Dallas, Mavericks close the gap this offseason? And they give you, first of all, they acknowledge what the Mavericks are missing. A big.
Starting point is 00:35:38 DeAndre Aitin, Rudy Gobert, engineer a trade possibility. Gobert is really expensive. Should the Mavs pursue Rudy Gobert? They acknowledge he's the best interior defender in the league. I don't know if I want him on the floor late, not great offensively outside of Lobbs. There's a little DeAndre Jordan here, but a better defender. And he's really expensive, like 42 large a year. There's the Brunson dilemma.
Starting point is 00:36:00 But Jalen Brunson's a very good young player. He's tiny. He's 6'1. He's not going to defend. Luca can't defend. So you've got your issues. What's interesting to me about Luca is I said this yesterday. There's a lot of comps with Larry Bird.
Starting point is 00:36:15 I see it. I get it. The international Larry Bird. But there's also comps with Carmelo Anthony. He's not in shape. He plays himself in shape. You get nothing on the defensive end. Players eventually resent that.
Starting point is 00:36:26 There's some James Harden. He's got the ball in his hand so much. You end up observing him. You're watching him. You're not playing with him. You're staring at him. I think the bigger issue here is to demand and tweak Luca. And I love him.
Starting point is 00:36:40 Outside of Yanis, I'd probably start my franchise with him or Jason Tatum. But some of this is just a Luca thing. Like he comes in out of shape. And I know he's young and he gets in shape rather quickly. But like when young guys struggle with weight, that's like an old NBA guy. Knee braces and they get heavier. Antoine Walker was on the show yesterday. and he kind of talked about what to do with Luca going forward.
Starting point is 00:37:04 Is he going to be willing to let another star come on his team and share the basketball? Also, I need him to take a LeBron James approach to his body. Sky's the limit how good he can be, and he'll be the MVP of this league, if not once but maybe twice if he takes that type of approach to his body. And then also, I think for the Dallas Mavers as a whole in this playoff, what they have to learn is what they need and what they're missing. they did take a big swing. Yep. It's interesting. People forget that when Jordan came into the league,
Starting point is 00:37:35 he was actually given two great offensive players, Orlando Woolridge and Quentin Daly. He didn't work with him. He worked with Scotty Pippen, who understood his role, more of a slasher, I'm Robin to your Batman. It worked. Phil Jackson talked him into Stop scoring as much, trust your teammates. Kobe Bryant, by the way, did not work with other guards outside of Derek Fisher. He worked with Shaq and then eventually Powell Gasol. There's this idea that you just accused. accumulate talent and it's like the Olympics. The difference is in the Olympics, players are more
Starting point is 00:38:04 selfless because they're playing for the country, the flag, and patriotism. Here you're playing for a slice of the economic pie. So you just think, oh, just get Luca, have another good guy. Rudy Gobert is not very highly skilled. He may be the best fit. DeAndre Aiton has limitations, but he may be the best fit. Fit is a real thing with stars. Some guys are never going to give you a great effort on the defensive end. Carmelo Anthony has never seen a defensive possession he likes. It is a hobby more than a profession. He's going to make the Hall of Fame. Kobe, I'm not sharing the ball in the back court. It was hard. It was pulling teeth to get him to share it with Shaq. Eventually, he got better, matured with Powell Gasol. So it sounds easy. Like,
Starting point is 00:38:46 let's just put him with another star. It doesn't work that way. I've been in this business. You and I have been in this business for a long time. The idea that you just throw everybody up there, a lot of people who are good, don't work with other people who are good. And I don't think, think it's just as easy as everybody thinks. The Rudy Gobert piece, if Gobert cost you $20 million, not 40, I'd do it tomorrow. My issue is I get locked into Lucas' deal, I get locked into Brunson's deal,
Starting point is 00:39:09 I get locked into Gobert's deal, and I may need somebody else, and I just don't have any room. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Hey, it's Ben, Ben, host of the fifth hour

Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:41:41 I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because. a crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
Starting point is 00:42:01 I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:17 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we
Starting point is 00:42:49 don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Starting point is 00:43:07 Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way.

Go to tankless made simple.com. Leaders in green technology as well. It is interesting from time to time when, you know, I always try to be aware of the fact that some people,
Starting point is 00:43:44 Aaron Rogers falls into this category. He's great, but he's very public. He can be antagonizing. So sometimes he gets over-criticized for stuff that is just his personality. He's quirky. He can be aloof. not every quarterback's going to be the same guy. Like Kyler Murray and Aaron Rogers have different personalities.
Starting point is 00:44:01 Carson Wentz has rubbed people the wrong way. He's got a different personality. Doc Rivers always feels like one of these guys. Like literally he's going to be a Hall of Fame coach. He was a very good player. He was very good on television. And he keeps getting really good jobs by like really good GMs generally because he knows what he's doing.
Starting point is 00:44:17 He took over the Donald Sterling Clippers. They were the laughing stock of literally the sport. That owner was forced out for obvious clear reasons. And he ended up winning 63% of his games. And what happened to Doc is he had a highly discussed and wildly entertaining team. I always thought it was a flawed team. I never thought it was a championship team. I always said, Blake Griffin was the best volleyball player in league history.
Starting point is 00:44:42 He was great at the net. But he couldn't necessarily shoot. He was kind of rigid at times offensively. DeAndre Jordan, without Chris Paul, what was he? And Chris Paul's a mid-range guy. As the warriors at the same time were becoming sort of the three-parts. point shooting avalanche of the sport. They were ahead of the clippers analytically.
Starting point is 00:45:00 So this idea that he didn't win with the clippers, he won a lot with the clippers. He's the winning his coach with the clippers. I've never understood, you know, sort of the criticisms with him. The other thing is, this Laker job is a big job with big egos. It's going to be hard to coach. You're going to have to have somebody that can not only navigate night to night, but can navigate these egos. There's a story that came out that,
Starting point is 00:45:25 Russell Westbrook, and this is just who Ross is at this point, was outraged and fired back at Frank Vogel when Frank Vogel suggested, just merely suggested that to get the ball up court faster than anybody could bring it up. And Westbrook was outraged by that. I'm the guy. Well, I mean, if you're going to battle with that, this is not a winning formula. So you have to have somebody that can navigate Westbrook. LeBron's an older player. he's giving you in the last three years, 55 games a year. And he still runs the offense.
Starting point is 00:45:59 So 30 games a year, the guy who runs your offense won't be available. Anthony Davis is wildly talented, but has never put in the requisite time working on his body. So he tends to be overly brittle and has already peaked. Mello actually became one of the gems of the season. He came to terms with what he is and was a really nice bench player. But they gave away Caruso for nothing. and KCP. And so you've got a million things to deal with here.
Starting point is 00:46:26 And the idea that you can bring in a recently fired coach, at least Doc comes with a title should probably have two. Doc comes from a Philadelphia team where considering M.B.'s face exploded, Hardin's game exploded, and Thibel wasn't vaxed and couldn't play on the road. I thought they did a pretty good job. So this is just one of these jobs for the Lakers. I don't think Terry Stott feels right or big enough. He's an offensive version of Vogel.
Starting point is 00:46:50 Darwin Ham could be good, but man, is that a tough first job? That's a lot. Dan Wojke, L.A. Times, has covered Doc many times with the Clippers and now covers the Lakers, talks about Doc potentially being the next Laker coach. He's incredibly experienced. Virtually for the last decade plus in basketball, he's done nothing but coach stars. Having somebody with that type of experience, it's sort of like a warm blanket, right? You can feel fairly comfortable that Doc knows what he's getting into and has ideas for how to manage this stuff.
Starting point is 00:47:20 especially if Russell Westbrook is back too. I think the other argument for Doc is that he wins a lot. He does win, right? The issue with Doc, I think, and Doc has one ring, and the mistake Doc has made, and I think he would admit to this is like, he's defended himself. And like, you should never defend yourself. You should just be like, my record is my record.
Starting point is 00:47:43 Like, I'll see you in Springfield one day when I'm in the Hall of Fame. You know, when you get these big jobs, Yankees a great example. That's a big job. You got nine, you got four newspapers and three guys apiece, sports talk radio, it eats you alive. There have been managers who got that job and it just overwhelmed them. I would say the Dallas Cowboys, Mike McCarthy at times feels overwhelmed. Just it's too big. Who succeeded?
Starting point is 00:48:08 Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcells. Kentucky basketball. I think his name was Billy Gillespie. Overwhelmed. Calipari, big enough for the job. Duke basketball. Notre Dame. I felt Charlie Wise was overwhelmed. Clay Helton at USC was overwhelmed by it. There are a handful of these jobs and the Lakers, good or bad, are one of them. Most of their successes have come with coaches that can handle
Starting point is 00:48:34 the gravitas of it. And I think Doc can do that. Now, I'm not saying Philadelphia would give him up, but not only do you have to deal with the Lakers, but we've seen this. Like Urban Meyer is big enough for Ohio State. Nick for Alabama. Bob Stoop, soaps, immediately felt big enough for Oklahoma. Is Brent Venables? I'm not sure. That is a big boy job. I've seen guys get the job at Texas with the longhorns. They shrink really fast.
Starting point is 00:49:00 So, you know, all things considered, I think Doc fills a lot of quotas here. He's experience, got a title, and you're not going to hire Doc. And if they start out four and nine, run him out of town. Like, he's too respected. You've got to get over the fact that he coached the Celtics and Clippers. Get over it. I know you got to get. Lakers are not at a point to be precious.
Starting point is 00:49:22 You got to just hire the best guy available. Guys, just because you're getting older, doesn't mean you have to slow down. There's M Drive. Walgreens has it. Right Aid.
