Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me.
Starting point is 00:01:08 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year.
Starting point is 00:01:25 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hardway with your favorite therapist and host Kear Games. This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor. It signals to the world that you're not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that doesn't.
Starting point is 00:01:57 not mean that you need to. Listen to learn the hard way on the IHard radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Thanks for listening to The HARD podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the Hurt at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the IHart Radio app by searching Hurd.
Starting point is 00:02:22 We're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Ah, here we go. It is our number two on a Friday. Live in Los Angeles, it is the herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening. IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1. Joy Taylor's back Tuesday, Alex Curry today and Monday. She is in an undisclosed warm location, taking a much well-deserved vacation. So good for Joy, and Alex is here.
Starting point is 00:02:57 You live in Manhattan Beach, so that's a vacation every day, I guess. It's so funny because when my cousins used to come visit, they used to show up and they'd be like, you live in a vacation town. But it's like when you're born and raised there, you don't think about it. You grow up on the beach, on the Strand. That's just what you're used to. But when people would come to visit, they're like, you live in vacation. I know, it was interesting to watch. You know, the Bengal fans came here.
Starting point is 00:03:17 Yeah. And it was not only a nice week. It was hot. Like it was 85. Yeah, like it's just not that hot. At the beach, which it never is. So I told the story is I was down in Manhattan Beach a couple weeks ago during the Super Bowl, and I literally, had I had flip-flops, had I had board shorts, I would have gotten
Starting point is 00:03:35 out of my car parked and got out of the beach. It was so hot. We did, and it was beautiful. Beautiful, beautiful. So interesting stuff. I led the show today. I think it is interesting. Rob Demoski, who is the best Packer guy out there right now, certainly in a class of one or two people in his kind of mailbag is talking about the Packers and Aaron Rogers. And, you know, I, I'm not going to try to get into Aaron Rogers' head. I have no idea what he's going to do. But he talks about Aaron being seven and nine in his past 16 playoff games with two different coaches. And that there's people in the organization, even some, he says here, wonder if he can do it in January and February.
Starting point is 00:04:15 So remember, Matt Lafleur was not hired to fix the regular season. Mike McCarthy won in the regular season with Aaron. Matt LaFleur was brought here because of the end of the seasons weren't going well. Well, they're still not going well. All right. All Matt Lefleur is doing is winning more against the division than Mike McCarthy did. But to that, I would say the division was better with Mike McCarthy. The Bears won a Super Bowl or the Bears were in a Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:04:44 The Lions were better. You know, I think Jim Caldwell and Matt Stafford were pretty darn capable. By lion standard, it's still inexplicable why they let him go. And, you know, the Vikings were better during the McCarthy era than they have been the last couple of years as Mike Zimmer was recently fired. So that's kind of my takeaway on that, is that, you know, how much everybody wants to blame Aaron to lead the show, I said, you know, are we sure Matt LaFleur is a great coach? The other thing where I will defend Aaron a little bit on this is if you look at the last eight teams that played that were left in the NFL,
Starting point is 00:05:20 the last eight that were left, boy, I'm defending Aaron like crazy today. Kansas City, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Tennessee, Rams, Tampa, San Francisco, Green Bay. I can argue seven of those eight had better weapons. Tennessee had Julio Jones and A.J. Brown. After Devante Adams, I mean, you can watch the game against San Francisco. Aaron doesn't trust anybody else in a big spot. He doesn't trust the second tight end. He doesn't trust the number two receiver.
Starting point is 00:05:44 They had the weakest weapons. And I like Aaron Jones. And I like Devante Adams. But we live in a weapons league now in the NFL. Everybody's got two of everything. Two of everything. And you say, well, you know, again, I'm not saying that Aaron isn't part of the issue, but are we sure Matt LaFleur is a great coach? The division's got in bed, not doing anything in the playoffs that Mike McCarthy didn't do.
Starting point is 00:06:08 McCarthy's got a better winning percentage than Matt LaFleur does in the playoffs. I'm not sure Matt LaFleur was a great coordinator. He was certainly competent. But when he left Tennessee, they didn't regress. They didn't regress. Arguments could be made that Arthur Smith was as good or better. when Dan Quinn's and the Shanahan's leave as coordinators, that side of the ball gets significantly worse within a couple of years.
Starting point is 00:06:31 So, you know, it's just interesting when you have somebody incredibly well tied in is asking questions, and I'm in the peculiar position to defend Aaron Rogers. I don't know that Matt Lafleur is in the same class as the coach that just won the Super Bowl. I don't know that. And I don't think they have big weapons. And with Aaron's salary, good luck paying for a second great receiver. I think the league has changed. We just saw an awful offensive line get to a Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:06:57 That's the first time in my life. Why? They had really good weapons. That's what I used to say. Receivers are icing. Everything else is cake. Receivers now are not only cake, they're a big part of the cake. The rules have changed.
Starting point is 00:07:12 The middle of the field is receivers territory. It's no longer for safeties and linebackers. So if you don't have the weapons, good luck. So some of this is, they're not good enough. wide receiver and some of it is, are we sure that Matt LaFleur is great? He's capable, but Green Bay doesn't pay for coaches, never has. They don't pay the big money. They can pay for Sean Payton and cost you $15 million. LaFleur, cost you $5.
Starting point is 00:07:37 With that new segment on the show, okay, it may be the first and last time I ever do it, but I really like it. It's going to be called Great Take or Less Debate with my buddy Chris Brousard, co-host First Things First. This is going to run. revolutionized television, Chris. It's going to be talked about when I retire for years and years, or maybe it's the last time we do it.
Starting point is 00:08:00 But I've got some strong takes, sat and watched the Sixers' Bucks. I'm now kind of moving into watching a lot of NBA stuff. And so I've got four or five NBA topics. You tell me great take or let's debate. So I'll start with this one. And I said this at the end of last year. With LeBron and A.D., they can't stay healthy. Lakers are 9th in the West.
Starting point is 00:08:21 I would trade AD in the offseason, even if it infuriates LeBron. Great take or let's debate. Okay, it's a great take, all right, but there is a caveat. All right, I'm not shopping AD. I'm not, I got to get rid of AD at all costs. I better get something for it. So I would amend it, Colin, to I'm open to moving AD, even if LeBron is upset about it.
Starting point is 00:08:51 And I'm not sure if you make the right. trade, Colin, that he will be upset because he sees what the rest of a see that AD can't stay healthy. So here's the deal, though. I'm only trading AD for a superstar who's on that same level or a couple of stars. I'll give you a trade I would make. Bam out of Bayou and Jimmy Butler. Oh, yeah. That's what I'm talking about. I want that in return. But now that doesn't work financially. So that's hard to make. That's my point, though. What is, trade is out there. You're not getting Embed. You're not getting Janus. I'm not doing it for Damien Lillard. As great as Dame is, he's a guard, he doesn't defend. He's having a bad year or he was,
Starting point is 00:09:35 at least before he got injured, a subpart year by his standard. So I'm open to trading AD, but I'm not just giving him away at all costs to move on. I got to get something that helps me win a championship next year because LeBron's still here. All right. My take, the 76ers clearly won the trade with the nets. They're asking one really good player to join a veteran coach, a great center, terrific chemistry, going to be seamless. You'll see it in a week. They won the trade.
Starting point is 00:10:07 Great take or let's debate. Let's debate. Let's debate. I like Philly, but they got to get it done quickly. All right, I think they won it in the short term, but Brooklyn won it in the long term. And here's what I mean. Like, I think this is the best. year, Colin, for the Sixers to win the championship. I'm not predicting they will. I think Milwaukee's the
Starting point is 00:10:29 best team in the East, but this is their best shot. James Hardin will be 33 years old at the start of next season. He will be in his 14th year. And Colin, we know he loves the nightlife. He loves the boogie. All right? So what is he going to be like next season, right? We see this year that he wasn't quite the same James Harden. Was it because he wasn't happy? Was he? Was he? because he's getting older? Was it because the referees are calling the game differently? Whatever the case, he was an all-star, but not a superstar. And so I'm concerned long-term about what I'm going to get from James Harden. And also, there are a little some questions about the fit. Everybody says, oh, great guard, especially he's a great point guard when he wants to be, and a great big man
Starting point is 00:11:18 in Embed. Perfect fit. Well, Embed actually likes the ball a lot. Has a ball. He's a ball. He's a ball. He's a in his hands a lot, plays on the perimeter a lot, and he's not the type that's going to run the pick and roll with Hardin and roll to the basket for easy lives that Hardin loves to throw. So this is not the match made in heaven that everyone thinks. It can work, but it better work quickly, Colin, or they could regret this in the long time. Very interesting take on. I like that.
Starting point is 00:11:46 I didn't think about that. All right. Ben Simmons going to have the same problems he had everywhere else, disengaged. lacks confidence. I don't buy too many moving parts with a lot of egos. I don't buy Brooklyn. Great take or let's debate. Great take.
Starting point is 00:12:07 Look, on paper, their questions are, as I just said about Philly, on both of these sides. All right, a lot of questions on the Philly side, just as many questions with Ben Simmons that you brought up on the Brooklyn side. Now, in theory, on paper, it looks great. Ben Simmons gives them defense, which they needed. He got court vision. He can pass the ball. He can play at the dunker spot or inside near the paint,
Starting point is 00:12:31 whereas jump shooting won't be a problem. So if he gets his head right, it's great. But that's the question that you're bringing up. If he gets his head right, and here's the thing about Ben Simmons, Collins. Let's go back. At LSU, not a winner, right, kind of didn't love the game because he quit. And he didn't even finish the season. Best player in the nation.
Starting point is 00:12:53 and they don't even make the tournament, he doesn't finish the season. We go to Philadelphia. Does he love the game? Well, why didn't he just at least get a little better at his jump shooting over the past four or five years? Didn't even try. Still where he was his rookie year.
Starting point is 00:13:10 And then if you look at some of the playoff series with Philadelphia, especially last year, under achievement, right? Yeah. So the question is, does he love the game and is he a winner? and that has to be answered for this to work in Brooklyn. All right. Kevin Durant isn't necessarily to me. He's a great singer but can't work long term in any band.
Starting point is 00:13:34 Everywhere he ends up, he's on an island. Even in the great culture in San Francisco, by the end, he was on an island. Kerr struggled, Steph, Curry, Dre. And I love KD. He's talented, but I don't necessarily think you can say he's a winner. He's just a great singer. Can't get along with band members. That's who he is.
Starting point is 00:13:56 Oh, let's debate. Let's debate. I wouldn't say he's not a winner. What I would say, Colin, is he's not a leader. And to me, that means he is a perfect bandmate if you got leaders. So in Golden State, you're right. At the end, it got kind of shady because he had people whispering in his ear. He wants to be the leader, but he's not the leader.
Starting point is 00:14:16 So I look at him, Colin. You're of age where you remember this. Run DMC. Yeah. Great group that had two rappers run and DMC, and Jam Master Jay was the DJ, the late Jam Master Jay. Now, Jam Master Jay was as important to the group as run and DMC were. He made the beats, he was scratching all of that.
Starting point is 00:14:36 But he wasn't built to be the leader. He needed the two MCs to get the crowd going to make it work, to be the frontman. He just did all the great work behind the scenes and still got credit, but he wasn't the leader. That's Kevin Durant. I think Kevin Durant, Colin, can fit anywhere. And this is what worries me about James Harden. You couldn't play with Kevin Durant.
Starting point is 00:15:02 Durant doesn't need the ball a lot. He doesn't shoot too much. He doesn't over-dribble. He doesn't have an overbearing personality. He just wants to catch it and score. And so I think he's a perfect fit for the band, but he is not the leader of the band. And that could spell.
Starting point is 00:15:20 problems in Brooklyn because who is the leader? Is it Kyrie? Uh-oh. Yeah. All right. Here's another one. Zion, we're about 80% there. He's a bust. Well, I hate to say it. Right now it's a great take, Colin. And I think you hate to say it as well. But look, it is what it is. He's played, I think, 85 games. He will have played 85 games in his first three seasons. That means he's missed two of his first three seasons. Yeah. The hope, and people won't get excited about this name, the hope is that he becomes the Junis Ilgouskas.
Starting point is 00:15:57 And I don't mean that level of play, but I covers the Junisilgouskis. You remember he played with LeBron and Cleveland. Missed his first few years with foot problems, came back and played at the level that he would have played at had he not had the injuries. Like, you look at Grant Hill, Derek Rose, guys like that, they came back and played, right? But they never were the same. Right. And you don't want that with Zion.
Starting point is 00:16:22 If he comes back and he's a 15-point score, he's a role player, that's a bust, as you said. He needs to come back like Zedrunas and be the player he would have been had he not been injured. I'm holding out hope, but right now it doesn't look good. I'll say this, Colin. If there was worry, remember about a year ago, that Zion would be that first rookie to not take the contract extension. He wants to go to New York or he goes elsewhere. If I'm Zion, I'm calling David Griffin right now.
Starting point is 00:16:54 Griff, let's sign this extension as soon as possible. I'm in. I want to stay. He can leave later, but he needs to lock up that money long term. And if I'm Griff, I'm avoiding Zion for now. I'm not answering the phone. I'm not looking at him in the eye. I don't want to talk about the contract.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Well, you know, Zion, hey, how you doing? I got to go. So it's a tough situation for New Orleans because do you sign him long term or do you not? That's going to be a big question for them. By the way, a broadcasting Hall of Fame called. They're considering putting Great Taker Let's Debate already in. They're going to vote it in. That's how strong this segment was, Broussard.
Starting point is 00:17:31 Thank you. Debuted very strongly at the box office. Have a great weekend. You and Rob later on Radio, Fox Sports Radio. You're crushing it, buddy. Thanks. Good stuff, Chris Broussard. We'll have Leroy Butler, former Packer Great, is going to join us.
Starting point is 00:17:50 You know, Aaron said it wouldn't take very long. Well, it's not very long time. This weekend, I want stuff. I want answers. And I'm not trying to get into Aaron's head. It's not somebody I can relate to. But Leroy Butler, former Packer Great, is going to be joining us this hour. One more herd?
Starting point is 00:18:05 The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeart Radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Starting point is 00:19:57 Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 was big to me, not just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:20:17 I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really?
Starting point is 00:20:36 Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Keer Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tript Fantine, Ryan Clark.
Starting point is 00:21:03 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross because you find it important to be a good person
Starting point is 00:21:23 while you hear on earth? Or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure,
Starting point is 00:21:39 and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free I Heart Radio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. Sunday, it's the most iconic day in all of Motorsports, the Daytona 500. The Great American Race kicks off the 2022 NASCAR season at 2.30 Eastern, 1130 Pacific,
Starting point is 00:21:58 only on Fox and the Fox Sports app. Now, Fox Met Super 6 is giving NASCAR fans a free chance to win $25,000 of Clint's cash during the Daytona 500, scan the QR code, download the Super Six app and enter your race picks in the Daytona 500 contest for your chance to win. Now Fox Bet Super 6 has given away over $6 million in cash prizes to date and there will be plenty of chances to win throughout the NASCAR season. Don't miss out. It is free to play.
Starting point is 00:22:25 I still think it's very interesting. Steve Young and Joe Montana in the last month have had thoughts about Tray Lance not being ready. I want to play that Steve Young by. It's an interesting word. I always say this, words matter. Most valuable player. Well, what does valuable mean? There's nobody in the NFL more valuable than Joe Burrow this year. He's the most valuable player. Well, Aaron Rogers, his stats were better. But Green Bay won this division with Mike McCarthy,
Starting point is 00:22:52 and you all think he's a bum, and I'm not sure I think he's great. So, like, Green Bay is the best organization, arguably in that division. Maybe not arguably. And they've won with McCarthy and Matt LaFleur. So, like, it could be, you know, let's be honest here. when Bill O'Brien won four division titles in six and a half years, was he a great coach? No, he was the best coach in that division for a while, right? So my takeaway is words matter.
Starting point is 00:23:21 Burrough is the most valuable player. Aaron's better statistically. But interesting. Steve Young talking to Canbyr Radio in San Francisco about Trey Young. He uses a word expansive. This is interesting. Now, Trey Lance, we don't know. And Trey doesn't know.
Starting point is 00:23:40 If Trey was ready, Trey would have played. Trey needs to get ready in this offseason. This needs to be the biggest boot camp effort in history to get him ready to be expansive. But we cannot wait for that. We've got to get, if that's what we're going to do, we've got to get them ready. And we've got six months to do it. That word's interesting. Expansive.
Starting point is 00:24:01 Is he limited knowing the playbook? That's what it sounds like. Is he being told that? I don't know. But it's a fairly rigid opinion considering Trey Lance played a second level of football FCS and only played one game in two years. So my takeaway is nobody thought he was going to be ready in September. Like, I don't really buy, like if he's ready, he would have played. He was the one quarterback we said that probably would not be ready. That was a reasonable take that Trevor Lawrence started for three years, Justin Fields for two, Mack Jones had Nick Sabin, Sark, NFL coaches. We all knew,
Starting point is 00:24:34 was pretty obvious that Tray Lance would not be ready to play in September. He hadn't, he played one game in two years, and he played a lower level of football. So it's going to take him longer to ramp up. So for Steve Young to say, if he was ready, he should have played. Really? I mean, he did get into six games. He had two starts, one bad, one pretty good. So I just think it's really interesting and coincidental I don't mind into that Montana and Young in the last three weeks to a month,
Starting point is 00:25:04 have come out with an opinion that is, Trey's not ready, let's go get a better quarterback. Is that coming from inside the room? My guess is, why, first of all, these guys are not flamethrowers. They're not fire starters. They're legendary, and they both have an opinion, he's not ready. Well, how do they know that? And you use the word expansive.
Starting point is 00:25:27 What are they saying? He hasn't picked it up yet. I don't know. But it's, you know, you got to listen to words that are used when people talk. My takeaway, I would move Garoppolo out of the building. I'd get a second, third round pick and a player, and I would give, I mean, you moved up to get him. I want to see him play. You got to give this kid 17 starts. You've got to give him a shot here. Like, I don't know if Justin Fields can play. Boy, he was hitting miss last year. You got to, you picked him,
Starting point is 00:25:55 where you picked him, you got to give him a year. Eli Manning was pretty bumpy first two years. so you got to give them a year. So to me, the advantage to Tray Lance, if you move Jimmy Garoppolo out, you're not paying anything to your quarterback. So you can go get, on the market, you can upgrade in multiple places with Tray Lance. But if you're drafting these guys in the first round,
Starting point is 00:26:21 especially if you're moving up, like Green Bay with Jordan Love and the Niners with Tray Lance, if you're moving up and giving off picks, you've got to play them. That is why, you go get them. I don't mind sitting them for a year. You can't go to a second year or not playing them.
Starting point is 00:26:35 Jordan loves now potentially in a third year. You've just wasted this opportunity of a lifetime to surround your rookie quarterback with great veteran players. I mean, if Trailer, and I understand the division's tough, but, I mean, that roster is really good.
Starting point is 00:26:51 Are you telling me you can't get to a wild card with Trey Lance? Is that what's being insinuated? I don't know. They know something in San Francisco They're not talking about. Alex with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news.
Starting point is 00:27:07 This is the herd line news. Very interesting. Definitely seem premeditated. There's something there. There's something there. Now, you mentioned the Packers. They made a move yesterday that could help keep Aaron Rogers around for 2022. It was reported that Green Bay is bringing back Tom Clements as a quarterback coach.
Starting point is 00:27:25 Clements was Rogers QB coach back in 2006 and had a variety of roles in Green Bay. for a decade. And right now, Fox Bet gives the Packers the best odds to have Rogers on their team next season. That's fair. I don't think that's crazy. I don't think it's crazy at all. They're going to have to make that puppy work in the salary cap, but it's not crazy. How much do you think this actually helps Rogers' decision? Well, they say they're buddies, so he was the buffer between McCarthy.
Starting point is 00:27:51 I think Aaron's somebody that you have to get people like that. I mean, Brady worked with a lot of different offensive people, Byron Leftwich, Bruce Ariens, Josh McDaniels. Charles Charlie Weiss and he worked with a ton of people Bill O'Brien that Aaron tends to have guys he likes and guys he doesn't so you know every personality is different not a shot like every personality is different but it probably helps Green Bay's cause I would guess and you said you're ready to hear Aaron's decision when do you think we're going to get it 10 days within 10 okay yeah next week sometime all right I like that All right, moving on, there are rumors circulating this season that Russell Wilson might be interested in leaving Seattle, and apparently Tampa Bay is taking these rumors to heart. According to NFL networks, James Palmer, the Bucks have done a ton of work to potentially acquire Wilson in the offseason. Bucks recently lost their star QB Tom Brady, obviously, when he retired, and they're also reportedly interested in Deshawn Watson.
Starting point is 00:28:49 Now, they definitely need to do something. When you lose the greatest player who came in, changed the franchise, won a Super Bowl. It's a big hole. It's a big hole they got a film. Well, Tampa, for their salary cap issues, let's just throw this out there. I don't think it's going to happen. But Tampa's the kind of team that could address something Seattle needs. They could give Seattle another pass rusher. They've got really good players inside the box.
Starting point is 00:29:13 They could give Seattle a tight end, maybe a Cameron Brate. They could give Seattle an offense. Ryan Jensen, no, he's a free agent. they have they their offensive line center right guard right tackle that's pretty good O line so they have things that could if you give me a multiple picks yeah if I was Seattle and I thought all right we need to upgrade the O line give me three first round picks I'll take another receiver beyond DK. McCaff and Tyler Lockett give me a pass rusher three picks you're not going to equal Russell Wilson.
Starting point is 00:29:51 Yeah. But I would say this, whoever the next quarterback is has a winning formula. Because Seattle's got some holes. Corner. I think they need another wide receiver. I think the offensive line at center and one of the guard positions is weak, right? Tackles not great. Pass rusher, they need more besides Dunlap.
Starting point is 00:30:09 So I don't know. I mean, Tampa's got a really, really deep roster. Yeah. And I don't want just draft picks for Russell. You got to give me starters. Yep. That's the old secret. Everybody thinks draft picks solve it.
Starting point is 00:30:21 No. No. You give me a Pro Bowl level. You give me your best corner, your best pass rusher, and three picks. Then it's a different roster for us. And speaking of picks, Rams GM Les Sneed was seen wearing a t-shirt at the Rams Super Bowl parade that said, F them picks in regards to giving up picks to get Matthew Stafford. And LeBron tweeted in response to the shirt, legend, my type of guy. Now, this comes right after the Lakers did not make a move.
Starting point is 00:30:49 at the trade deadline. But remember, we are just two seasons removed from the Lakers giving up their future for Anthony Davis. And it worked. They won a championship. It was kind of the perfect combination of time off in the before the bubble. Not a lot of people there in the bubble. And they won a championship. I think if you're Phoenix or you're, if you're Phoenix or you're Milwaukee, I don't think picks help you.
Starting point is 00:31:15 But I think if you're the Lakers, they can. I mean, Jonathan Cumminga for Golden State. has been a pick for the Warriors that he's going to see time in the playoffs. So I don't think picks are bad necessarily, but I do think when you get to the top, I mean, if you go back to Shaq and Kobe's Lakers, the Miami Heat, the Warriors with Katie, Steph, even without him, there's not a lot of room for draft picks. They're rotational guys, maybe. But again, do you trust for these great teams like Milwaukee, Phoenix Golden State?
Starting point is 00:31:42 Do you trust that rookie, that 19-year-old? Because that's what comes out of the draft now. Do you trust them in game six of a playoffs? series. Cumminga can defend, so Golden State will probably get him out there, but I'm not going to have them with seven minutes on the clock. So draft picks are important, but once you're at the very top of this league, I'm not going to take a 19-year-old. Milwaukee should not have a 19-year-old on the floor in any series against Brooklyn, late in the game against Philadelphia, Miami. I don't want them on the floor. So is it worth it for the Lakers? Like immediately at that moment,
Starting point is 00:32:16 but look at it now, two years removed? They have so many needs. AD is constantly injured and he's injured again now for at least four weeks. Alex for the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd lie news. We have talked today. I've been very pro-Aren Rogers today.
Starting point is 00:32:35 Rob Demovsky, who's been covering the Packers for a long time. He's one of a very small group of people. He talks about the Packers. You know, you trust him. He works at ESPN. He's been doing this a long time. So he said, you know, for some reason, Aaron hasn't been great all that often in the playoffs since the 2010 season.
Starting point is 00:32:51 They haven't had a sustained run. He's seven and nine past 16 playoff games. He's spectacular in the regular season. But can he do it in January and February? And my two takes were, do we know LaFleur's great and he doesn't have enough weapons? Now, I will say this. The other thing that has to be addressed, and it's completely fair, and all these Packer fanboys, they get mad when I say this. But I'm right, you can't just blame a lack of weapons because I just watched Matt Stafford win a Super Bowl with one star receiver.
Starting point is 00:33:19 Cooper Cup. That's it. They were down to their third tied end, and they had special teamers playing wide out. And Devante Adams and Cooper Cup are both great. Aaron could not win a playoff game at home, and the opponent, San Francisco, did not score a touchdown. So I just watched Matt Stafford dominate the fourth quarter with one-star receiver. Last three years, in the playoffs, Aaron Rogers' fourth quarter. 87 passer rating, 54.5% completion percentage. That ain't LeFleur and that ain't receivers. Aaron shrinks. He gets tight and he plays rigid and he just doesn't.
Starting point is 00:34:01 He has trust issues. We know this with his family. We know him personally. He has trust issues. His trust, you become your personality as a player. He got trust issues on the field. You could see it against San Francisco. So that's on Aaron.
Starting point is 00:34:16 Like he's not good enough late. And don't give me the, well, he doesn't. Matt Stafford had an end table in Cooper Cup, special teamer, third string, tight end, and beat a Bengals defense, a great pass rush, unbelievable safeties and good corners. So some of that's on Aaron. Stafford, Burrow, Mahomes, you know, they don't shrink late. They're not always their best late, but they don't shrink. Brady and Stafford are also fighters.
Starting point is 00:34:42 There's some NFL film stuff out there right now, and Stafford during the Super Bowl. He is aggressive. You know, Brady would scream and yell at teammates. he would scream and yell at coordinators. Matt Stafford is barking at Cincinnati Bengals. He's a fighter. And Brady's a fighter. And Peyton Manning was a fighter.
Starting point is 00:34:58 Aaron's not. And you become your personality. There's a lot of passive aggressive stuff. And I think he, you know, in pressure situations, I think people tend to revert back to their true personality. Fourth quarters, last three years in the playoffs, Aaron's been bad. Like bad.
Starting point is 00:35:13 What do you want me to say? That was nice for the first hour and a half. I got to be honest. Leroy Butler, former Packer, is right around the corner. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. On Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app.

Starting point is 00:37:32 on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:38:01 To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really?
Starting point is 00:38:24 Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Starting point is 00:38:50 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth.
Starting point is 00:39:12 Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keer Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway.
Starting point is 00:39:30 Open your free, Our Heart Radio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. By the way, college football fans are freaking out because the NCAA announced today they're not going to do a 12-team playoff. It's only going to be four. I'm really not that striding on it. Eight, 12. I'd do 12, give the first two, four teams a buy.
Starting point is 00:39:50 I'm for more at this point. More playoffs, the better. People are more distracted. We're all busier. We don't have time for regular season games. Monday through Friday, sports viewing is not doing great. Weekend sports viewing. Big college football.
Starting point is 00:40:02 The World Cup will do well if it's really, really special. NFL, March Madness. You've got to be special or the weekends. but, you know, I'm for more big playoff games for all sports and shorter regular seasons. I think the NBA should shorten its regular season by 15 games or more. I talked to Darrell Mori last week. He thinks they should be down to 58. I'm like 60, 70.
Starting point is 00:40:24 But I think we have a more distracted society. We're on our phones all the time. Give people more games that absolutely matter urgency. I think a playoff would do that. All right. Leroy Butler played 12 years in the NFL. It just got Hall of Fame. How about that?
Starting point is 00:40:39 Boy, Butler is a Hall of Famer. That's why I bring you on now. Not because I like you because you give me a rating spike. Congratulations, Hall of Famer. That must feel great when you wake up in the morning. I mean, it must, you put a lot of time into this sport. I really appreciate that because it does impact your family as well. But, you know, my son is 10 years old.
Starting point is 00:40:59 And he couldn't wait to go back to school, of course, because now he's like the favorite, you know, kid in the school. So my family is really having fun with it. So it's been a nice, it's been very nice. Well, you've earned it, and you had a nice post-football career. So, you know, it is interesting. Aaron's going to make a decision here in the next couple of weeks. I did think it was interesting.
Starting point is 00:41:19 I've said this on the show, Leroy, that the Packers have never done their business publicly. They just don't do it. They're like New England. They keep it in-house. They draft. They develop. They're very private. They don't have an owner, so they don't have, you know, Jerry Jones holding press conferences.
Starting point is 00:41:31 But over the last couple of weeks, they went public with their love for Aaron Rogers. And my takeaway is, Are they preparing that if he leaves, they can say, hey, we told you, we loved him. We gave the love. Why do you think they went public? I think they understand that the fan base is not fans. They're shareholders. I mean, they actually just raised $70 million.
Starting point is 00:41:57 Yeah, saw that. The stock sale. So when you have your shareholders, it's different than a fan base because you're invested in the team. They just wanted everybody to know their direction, that they're, This is the direction. We won him back for two or three more years, and we're going to go for it. They went for it last year, Colin, $45 million of the cap. That's never happened.
Starting point is 00:42:19 So at least take it to the fan base. Not only will we're spending the money, but we're going for it. Now, it didn't work out, but let's do it again and see what happened. You know, what's interesting is you host a very popular radio show, and this is really one of the reasons I love to bring you on, because you're really in the belly of the beast there. You get calls every day. And I'm fascinated. So when the, I haven't asked you this, when the Packers lost to the Niners,
Starting point is 00:42:44 the following Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday on your show, who got the criticism for that? Platinum question. I would say 80% was on Aaron Rodgers. Okay. Because, and people were saying, do you really need a Hall of Fame quarterback to win when you see Joe Burrow and Matthew Stappen in the Super Bowl? with this offense. And people are thinking maybe it's time to move on because he's going to be MVP and you can get a lot for him.
Starting point is 00:43:19 Sure. And you can kind of put a great team around him. I mean, 80% of people were saying exactly that. Okay. Now, now we've had three or four weeks. Everybody, you know, talks themselves off the ledge this morning, this afternoon on your show when you take calls because there'll be a topic. is it still 80% question or is it back to we love Aaron we want him back we don't want what are they saying today this afternoon it's switched it's like 70% let's go for it okay
Starting point is 00:43:52 I know how I felt after they lost to Kyle Shanahan and Jim and G again oh fine let's go for it again it's fun to win 13 14 games there sure sure but we got to get to the postseason and win a Super Bowl Now, you know as well as I do when you trade up to get a quarterback in the first round, you don't have to pay him for four years. So you want to take advantage of that. So if they bring Aaron back, Jordan Love, you've wasted that. You have wasted that advantage, which Seattle used with Russell Wilson to build a mega roster.
Starting point is 00:44:24 We've seen, you know, I mean, Lamar Jackson, Baltimore, you know, you're not paying him much. Mahomes, you can retain your greatest players. Well, if they bring Aaron back, Jordan Love, you just wasted that. I can't help but read into this is they, they seem at practice, and he's just not the guy. I mean, that's my takeaway is if he was great, heck, Leroy, if he was 80% Aaron, you just make the move, right? Well, the thing about the Packers, they've never had a backup quarterback that they could depend on Aaron went down. So they're thinking, hey, listen, he's on a four-year deal anyway. We can pick up his fifth-year option.
Starting point is 00:45:04 and that's a lot of money to be put into quarterbacks, but we just don't know. Now, Denver says, okay, we don't want Aaron. But Nathaniel Hacker, who was his quarterback's coach for two years, I'll take him and give you a third round pick. Then the package's got to think about that. If you think about some teams, you know how it is, Colin. All these coaches thinking, another man's treasure is another man's treasure.
Starting point is 00:45:27 I can fix him. I can make him a player. Right, right. Because there's so many teams that need quarterbacks. Yeah. So today, your guess, and I, A, when do you think Aaron's going to make the announcement? And B, what do you think he does and why? I think he'll say that he'll be back.
Starting point is 00:45:41 I think me, I have no knowledge of just guessing. I think they're working on a deal right now to save the money under the cap. I think it'll be announced maybe next week or the week after. He's going to sign a two-year extension. They'll save some money. Now they can target Devante Adams. But before they do that, they got to get the head coaching extension and good to cuts. It's not just Aaron.
Starting point is 00:46:02 Let me ask you this, though, and I think you see this all the time, where teams peak, there's a window. And I said this, if you pay Devante Adams and Aaron, I think you've kind of, you're going to have to make some tough decisions here. And I think the roster's peaked. And I do think Green Bay does a tremendous job with drafting and developing. I think they're terrific at it. But I kind of feel like we've seen the best of this. Am I wrong? I don't think you're totally wrong, but the window's still open.
Starting point is 00:46:31 but every year it closes maybe an inch or two. It's not shut. But it is something to the fact that it is called Title Town, right? I mean, you've got to be judged by Super Bowls. I mean, Matthew Staff is a Super Bowl winner. You can never take that away from. I mean, that was the only difference with the Rams. So the Packers got to figure out a way to get back to the next level.
Starting point is 00:46:54 And I always said this, Colin, real quick. Matt, the floor needs to be a control freak without being a control freak. This is how I want it done. This is what I want to run. And Aaron has to be coachable. They say, yes, we're together. This is a partnership. Let's go win. That's why Mike Hongham, who I think is a Hall of Fame coach. That's how he did it with Brett. And I think it works. But both guys got to be on the same page. By the way, you got to be a minute here. Somebody had to have great impact in your life to be a Hall of Fame football player. Who was it? Well, real quick, Ray Rhodes, he was his idea to move me to safety.
Starting point is 00:47:33 But Michael Hulner changed my life. Real quick, he walked by my locker out of Michael Jordan, Jersey. He said, why don't you wear your own shirt? I said, I don't have a shirt. He said, exactly, go do something. And I wouldn't do something. That was impactful. So great, senior.
Starting point is 00:47:51 Congratulations. You're one of the good guys. Thanks, Leroy. All right. Thank you so much, God. I love it. I love how he hears from the Packer fans. because I don't, and I'm fascinated.
Starting point is 00:48:00 I want to know what they think, and nobody gives me the answer on what they think. It's funny. 70% get rid of Aaron. Week later, we love Aaron. We're just kidding. Which is fans are emotional. They should be. A really interesting story coming out.
Starting point is 00:48:15 Alex will have more on this next hour. This is interesting. Rich Orrumburger's really good. Comes on this show, former Patriot, radio host in San Diego. He's hearing things about the Tom Brady Bruce Aaron. Ariens breakup that are very interesting that there was tension because Aryans called out Brady multiple times. And Tom was always a good soldier, but nobody wants to be called out.
Starting point is 00:48:38 You don't, I don't. Nobody does. So, and Ariens called him out on more than one occasion. So apparently Brady and Leftwich, you know, they would go and do their game plan and stuff. And Bruce Ariens would sometimes come in after they had done it, take a red pen to it and mark it up, mark it up. And according to Rich Ornberger, that Brady, and Leftwich often felt undermined building a game plan. They put all the work in.
Starting point is 00:49:03 Ariens would come in and go, nope, nope, nope, yeah, yeah, nope, nope. And there was a little tension rising right there. So I don't doubt that at all. Rich is really smart and well connected. And I also think, as I said before, is, you know, if you're in a relationship with somebody for 20 years and it ends, you had to have a lot in common to be in a relationship for 20 years. as we can all say today, oh, Belichick was brutal. Tom Brady and Belichick had a lot in common. Not age, aspirational, driven, smart, focus, detailed. And they didn't last that long. They would have never left New England if they could draft a wide receiver.
Starting point is 00:49:41 He wouldn't have left. Why? Why would you leave? You've got the best defensive coach ever. So, you know, you leave somebody after 20 years. There was a lot about Belichick that I think Brady does miss. He was aligned with. Bill more than people think. Hour three next.
Starting point is 00:49:57 Another podcast from some SNL, late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an
