Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule. of two. Listen to Stuff to Bole Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:35 A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Cliver Show. This is a place for raw, unfills of conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that
Starting point is 00:01:56 not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Herd podcast.
Starting point is 00:02:12 Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com Or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Hurd. Now let's get this party. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go. It's our number two.
Starting point is 00:02:37 We're live in Los Angeles. It's the herd wherever you may be. However you may be listening. IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1. J. Mack is joining. Look at that. Joel clats around the corner. Baltimore favored by three and a half over Miami.
Starting point is 00:02:58 So it tells you Vegas buys into Lamar on the offense. You know, Colin, I just had this theory. Two quarterbacks had big revenge spots in week one. Russell Wilson, right, going against Seattle, and Baker Mayfield going against Cleveland. Both were graded pretty poorly by pro football folks. Both could bounce back big this week. Baker against a giant secondary that's down a couple guys. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:19 And then Russell Wilson in a good spot at Denver at home. Yeah, I mean, listen, if you didn't play in the preseason, the takeaway is if you as a quarterback did not plan the preseason, 11 quarterbacks didn't, eight lost. and one of the quarterbacks that did win played another quarterback, somebody had to win, right? So the reality is here you should play. Mahomes played, Brady played. You know, it is. But I think, you know, I criticize Aaron Rogers.
Starting point is 00:03:45 I really say a lot of good things about Aaron, but my bet of the weekend was Minnesota, is that Aaron just kind of arrogantly said, even though I have three rookie wide receivers and Alan Lazard's my one, not really a one, more of a three, I'm just going to disappear in the offseason and play a lot of golf. and date a girl named Blue of Earth. And by the way, I'm not going to play preseason snaps. Okay, then that's on you. Like, that's on you.
Starting point is 00:04:10 Tom Brady played him, Alan played him, Mahomes played him. You didn't play him. So it's, now, I'm not saying every quarterback has to. I'll give you know, an example would be, you know, Kirk Cousins has played with Irv Smith, Adam Thielen, Justin's Everson, Dalvin Cook in this offensive line. Even though he has a new coach, it's the same dudes. How many years are those guys?
Starting point is 00:04:32 Two, three years. A lot of the same guys. I understand some guys not playing in the preseason. If you come back, oh, but I think like a Matt Ryan with the Colts, I'd want to play. He did. Mahomes has all new receivers. Last year he had a new old line. Mahomes this year had new receivers.
Starting point is 00:04:48 I would play. Tom Brady with all that offensive line injuries. Now Russell Gage, no gronk. I'd want to play. Like, Dak Prescott. I'd want to plan the preseason. I, there's a hand, not many, but there are a handful of guys. Like Kirk Cousins, I sort of give a pass to it.
Starting point is 00:05:05 You have a new offensive coach, but McVeigh's system, what they say, is not terribly complex. Shanahan's system is complex. So Trey Lance, he wanted to get snaps in the preseason. Justin Fields with a new coach. There are guys that should play in the preseason. There's a three or four guys. I'm like, it just doesn't matter at this point. But I thought Aaron Rogers should have played.
Starting point is 00:05:25 And I'll say this again, it's not just. that he had rookie receivers. They were small college rookie receivers. Okay, Nevada and FCS program. And you're opening up on the road, not at Lambo. And it's a division game. So let's say Green Bay opened up at home against the Jags. Okay, that's different.
Starting point is 00:05:51 It's not going to count in division. It's not a very good football team. You're at home. But when you have two receivers from small college, and you're going to open up in maybe the loudest stadium in the league. People say Minnesota is the loudest stadium, a division game, a wildly competent offense. And oh, by the way, Kirk Cousins has a winning record against Aaron Rogers. Like this is not, Minnesota really plays the Packers well.
Starting point is 00:06:17 The bears don't. The lions don't. The Vikings do. So to me, that was one of those, Aaron, that week one lost, that's on you. Now, Aaron can argue it's 17 games. We also lost week one last. year. But last year in week one, you had Devante Adams. So to me, Green Bay's lost. That's an errand loss. You can't blame the young receivers. That is an errand. I mean, good God, when Brady was
Starting point is 00:06:42 in his prime, in the summer he'd go on vacation. He'd take Edelman with him. He would work, I mean, he is literally one of these guys that needs repetition and timing. So you can't take small college receivers, first games on the road, in division, good team, against the team that's had kind of your number. All right. So what's Joe Burrough's excuse, Colin? I know you said you talked to. Hold on, hold on.
Starting point is 00:07:04 Pro football focus rated him 30th out of 35 quarterbacks in week one. He had major surgery. So appendectomy surgery is major. They're taking something out of your body. So I talked to him yesterday. Yeah. So he had major surgery. So I had a weird thing happen to me a couple years ago.
Starting point is 00:07:23 It was, I got into a, I got, I broke a rib skiing and I couldn't move for about a month and a half. And I mean, it hurt to walk downstairs. And so I'm sitting here chugging coffee all the time, which thickens your blood because I could, I had no energy. It hurt to do anything. It walk up and downstairs. I'd been a long staircase. And so I'm sitting on my bed for six weeks, not moving. And all of a sudden I get a small blood clot. And, and so I thought, oh, right, you take blood thinners and you're fine. Yeah, they didn't open me up. It's just blood thinners. And the doctor's, and the doctor's said to me, oh, no, no, no, no. You don't understand. A blood clot, what it does to your nerves, what it does. Like, that's a major issue, a pulmonary embolism. I never took it seriously.
Starting point is 00:08:08 I'm like, I work out every day. I took blood thinners. It stopped hurting like five days later. I couldn't jog for about a week or two, but it was like, I'll walk around. You didn't open me up. And that was considered, like, jarring to your body. That was. Well, what is an appendectomy surgery? I go in, open you up, and take something out. So he didn't get any snaps. Now, Burrow told me yesterday, he goes, I wanted to play. He goes, I just couldn't do anything for two weeks. And so he also has, A, Mike Tomlin underdog in that defense.
Starting point is 00:08:42 B, you've got all new offensive linemen. You couldn't take a ton of snaps with them. It's a Hall of Fame coach in Zach Taylor. I didn't think Zach had a very good coaching game. I didn't think it was a very good coaching game. So I look at the Bengals and I think they're going to be fine. It's the same way I look at the Broncos today. Broncos fumbled twice on the one.
Starting point is 00:09:01 They're going to be fine. Like Denver's going to be fine. Cincinnati's going to be fine. Green Bay lost, I'm not sure they're going to be fine. I'm not sure their problems are solvable. Burrow getting more snaps at practice is solvable. Not fumbling twice at the one is solvable. I worry about the Rams left.
Starting point is 00:09:19 The Rams are now missing their center and their old lines not as good as last year. Nobody's giving you a left tackle at the trading deadline. I'm not sure all of the Rams issues up front offensively are solvable. All right. Well, I tell you got a little bounce in my step around these parts. I warned you all. I said, if USC gets good fast, I am going to be really difficult. Incorrigible.
Starting point is 00:09:44 Not fun to be around. And right now I've got him as the number one team in the country, and I'm being completely objective. Let's bring Joel Clat onto our show, number one USC, Bama, Georgia, you know, those schools, Ohio State. I actually, I actually, I want to temper it by saying that they're not good enough defensively, in my opinion, to compete for a national title. So let's just start with the USC thing. Before I get Texas.
Starting point is 00:10:12 Let's do it. Let's start in there. Okay. So I believe the transfer portal, you can solve one side of the football per year. Sure. I think they solve their offense. I mean, I think that's an understatement, to be quite honest with you. It's playing at a level right now that I didn't.
Starting point is 00:10:27 think was possible for them in one year. I mean, that's what the numbers bear out. If you're a USC fan, you should be pretty pleased because they're actually right now operating within a blueprint that has been to a playoff. Not just like, you know, oh, man, it's, you know, they're doing well. They're doing it. No, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:10:48 This version of USC, what they've done granted in two weeks is actually better in a yards per play scenario than the 2018 Oklahoma Sooners with Kyler Murray that went to a playoff. That Kyler Murray team. In a better conference. In a better conference. That Kyler Murray team averaged 8.6 yards per play, which is absurd, by the way. Right?
Starting point is 00:11:09 I mean, that was number one in the country that year. This USC team averaging more than that, 8.62 yards per play. That OU team in 2018 gave up 6.13 yards per play. Bad defense. We knew it. Yes, they weren't national championship caliber. they went to a playoff. And by the way, played scrappy against the Bama team, I believe, in an orange bowl in the semifinal. This USC team, guess how many yards there are given up?
Starting point is 00:11:35 5.09. So their margin right now in yards per play offensively and defensively better than a playoff team from Oklahoma. In a week of conference. Lincoln Riley knows how to take this type of team to a playoff. And when you look at what Notre Dame is doing early in this season, and you look at the way Utah struggled with a mobile quarterback and Anthony Richardson in their Florida loss. You said that. Why can't USC win the Pact 12th and go to the playoffs? I'm just saying, listen, that is, Colin, I know, like, people will say like, well, you know, Colin, he loves USC. I'm just telling you like I see it.
Starting point is 00:12:13 This version of USC is absolutely a version of USC that Lincoln Riley could win a conference with and go to a playoff with. They're playing that well so far. Will it keep up? I'm not sure. And you know why the reason? their only tripping point, health. Because if Williams goes down or Addison goes down, then who knows? Who knows what's going to go on?
Starting point is 00:12:33 Well, I mean, but if I go down this poor network. Well, Jason would be fine, and I can probably step in, and I'm sure the show would do just fine at that point, although it is called The Herd. I want to give you your respect. It is your show. Okay, so, but the point being is you brought in data, and I can't disagree with them at all.
Starting point is 00:12:51 All right, let's go to, okay, so this is the way, This is where college football fans are crazy. There's something about the plaque on the wall. Like an NFL fan could acknowledge, I don't like my quarterback. Fire the coach. College football fans can't do that. They just, if people just don't like Jim Harbaugh, oh, they're fourth in the country. Sure.
Starting point is 00:13:08 It's made the playoff beat Ohio State fourth again. It's pretty good. Brian Kelly, one everywhere. Don't like him. Okay. Little cringy. All right. And so, Sark, for whatever reasons, USC, arrogant, stumbled in life.
Starting point is 00:13:20 Oh, I don't know. A lot of fans are just. doubters. I watched that game against Alabama, and I said this yesterday, and I'm probably wrong, but I'm like, that was one of the few times. I thought somebody out clevered and out Foxx-Nixabin. Well, and I thought they just outplayed Alabama for the majority of the game. I mean, Alabama didn't do anything offensively for a big stretch of that game. There was six punts in a row. Four of them were three and outs in the middle of that game for Alabama's offense. With Bryce Young. With Bryce Young. And they felt like they had fixed the running,
Starting point is 00:13:53 game, they didn't. And this is not a defense that had a track record of dominance. You know, Texas's defense did not play well last year, in particular, stopping the run, and they came out there and really won the line of scrimmage outside of the one run. In fact, I'm just going to bring you data all day, okay? Did you know that outside of the 81-yard touchdown run from McClellan, the running backs for Alabama average 2.6 yards per carry? Can I throw a thing at you? Yeah, please.
Starting point is 00:14:19 30. And so when Pete was dominating the Pact 12, one of the big advantages was the rest of the conference was weak. Yep. He got whoever he wanted to. The Big 10 was weaker. He was literally Denver West cherry picking anybody he wanted that last school. Yeah, that's right. Nick Saban, Tennessee was a mess, Auburn was a mess, Georgia was a mess. Now Georgia's taking about four to five guys a year that went to Alabama. He's been doing that first. for four years now. Their pass rush, Georgia's is better. Their speed? No, it's not better than Alabama's. I look at Alabama. Not than Will Allen. Where's the pass rush outside of Will Anderson? Dallas Turner. I mean, he knocked Quinn Ewers out of the game. I mean, which is, by the way,
Starting point is 00:15:05 the, you know, I mean, drolling in on the ground, letter of the law type of deal. But I will say this, though, that that pass rush I still think is one of the best in, really, in football. Yes, I do. And and the reason they won is because they knocked Quinn Ewers out of the game. That was a cheap shot. It wasn't a cheap shot. I mean, it's a hit, drove him into the ground. I mean, it draws a flag, but I don't think it was cheap. I will say this about Alabama.
Starting point is 00:15:33 I am not going to make the same mistake that I did a number of years ago sitting on this couch, doubting Nick Saban. Nick Saban has evolved and adjusted better than any coach in the history of college football. He has won over a series of recruits. He has won over a cycle of different staffs. They will figure out a better way to run the ball. They will figure out a better way to attack with their wide receiver core, which was largely corralled by Texas.
Starting point is 00:15:58 Here is one thing, though, that I would give you, that I think is interesting about this Texas. You bring up Sark, and I want to just talk briefly about Sark. And I went into this at great length on one of my podcast episodes this week. I talked about the meetings with Sark and Nick Saven, and they were fascinating this week, last week, I guess. I was meeting with Steve Sarkesian first, and we were going to meet with Nick later in the day. This is Friday.
Starting point is 00:16:23 And Steve was just talking and we were meeting with players. And it kind of dawned on me. I was like, man, it just feels different. I don't know why. It feels different than the last 10 years at Texas. I don't know why. I couldn't put my finger on what felt different. I just kept telling Gus and our producer, something's better.
Starting point is 00:16:39 Something's more coherent. Like, it just feels different in a good way. And then we go to the meeting with Nick Saban later in the day, and it hits me like a ton of bricks. And I was like, that was it. That's what was different about Texas. I asked Nick Saban, what do you still love about this job? What is it? Why are you still doing this?
Starting point is 00:17:01 What, you know, like, what do you love about the job? And he says to me, I guess the chase is better than the capture. And all I could think about is that's what's different about Texas now. And he gave a great eloquent answer about it's not about the chase week to week trying to capture a championship. It's actually the chase on a day in and day out basis in order to prepare yourself for the report card of Saturday, which is going to reflect back to you exactly how well you prepared Monday through Friday. Great answer. Like only you can get from Nick Saban, right?
Starting point is 00:17:38 The chase is better than the capture, and it dawned on me. That's what's different about Texas. They no longer wanted to sit there and talk about being back. They no longer wanted to sit there and talk about the destination of where they wanted to be. They just talked about the chase. What are we doing today to make ourselves better? And I thought that was one of the reasons why I came away from that game, even in a loss, even with their quarterback being knocked out,
Starting point is 00:18:03 bullish on the Texas Longhorns. By the way, here's Clats top 10. For all you Harbaugh haters, you've got to go crying your soup here. But he's got Michigan 4. He's got USC 5. USC is great offensively. I don't know if they're five. You got all your teams in there.
Starting point is 00:18:18 They're good enough. Okay. They're good enough on office. It's 8.62 yards per play, man. That's crazy. That is. Okay, so here's my thing. I know it's not a great topic, but I do think it's a reality.
Starting point is 00:18:30 And sometimes things just change. The newspaper industry. We still need journalists, and there's a lot of great ones out there. Big J journalists. Yeah. Okay. But the discipline. distribution system changed in America.
Starting point is 00:18:46 Yes. Where I can get everything on my phone urgently. So it's just newspapers. Nobody to blame. It's not their politics. They've always leaned left. It's not that the writers aren't any good. The distribution mechanism for delivery to the audience changed.
Starting point is 00:19:03 I get everything on my phone within one minute. I don't have to read day old news tomorrow morning when you throw it on my porch. So it's nobody to blame. It changes. So here's my Nebraska. thing, they fire Scott Frost. The world's changed. Okay?
Starting point is 00:19:19 Is that every game's on television. Every game, used to be. Yeah, it's not like mid-80s or it's like Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma. There were like eight northern powers, Washington, Nebraska, Michigan, Penn State. And then, and that's where you had to go play mostly to be on television. Everybody's on TV. Yeah, every game. And I'll be damned if I'm going to play in cold weather and Lincoln.
Starting point is 00:19:43 Nebraska if I got choices. I think Nebraska's done as a program. No, I wouldn't say that. And I think that... I know. Am I... You look at J-MAC. The developments of the last eight months went in Nebraska's favor in a big way. And let me tell you why. Okay, I'll just want to paint a scenario for you. Trev Albert was very close to firing Scott Frost last year. Yes. Okay. And people were surprised, by the way, when he decided to retain him under a new... worked contract and Scott was kind of betting on himself and it was like, okay, well, he's got a winner, he's definitely out. He didn't and now he's definitely out. But think about if they would have changed right then. USC and UCLA had not moved to the Big Ten. So the separation of the SEC and the
Starting point is 00:20:29 Big Ten away from the other conference had not occurred yet. They had not signed their massive media deal, nor had it become very public about what those numbers were going to be, in particular in the SEC and the Big Ten. Now you fast forward to the current day. And we understand so much more about the future landscape of college football, namely being that the Big Ten and the SEC are really going to be driving college football, in particular from an economic fashion. They're likely going to have more seats in the playoff. The revenue that every coach in America now looks at himself and is like,
Starting point is 00:21:05 you know what, I need to get in one of those seats. Two conferences. I need to get in the Big Ten or the SEC. So coaches that last December would have not taken Treve Albert's call, probably take his call now. I'm looking at guys like, let's just throw him out there. Matt Campbell at Iowa State. I get that. Kalani Sataki at BYU.
Starting point is 00:21:28 Dave Iranda at Baylor. You might be thinking like, why would he leave? Well, I mean, is he going to sit in the Big 12? Like, what is the Big 12 going to look like? Is the Big 12 going to be a conference? I mean, are they going to have enough money in their Rev share to pay him what? Nebraska could pay him. So I do think that the structure of college football is going in a way in which,
Starting point is 00:21:49 and I said this, again, this week, Nebraska fans just sit tight. I'm not ready to say that they're done as a program because I've seen teams like Wisconsin and Iowa play very well. I've seen teams like Northwestern go and play for a Big Ten title. PJ Fleck has won 10 games and is, again, on the road to probably double-digit victories this year. I think Minnesota could win the Big Ten West. So you can do it at Nebraska.
Starting point is 00:22:13 It's just going to be difficult, and you've got to really put your nose to the grindstone. All right. All right. Michigan, they got the kid at quarterback now. J.J. J.J. You talked about him, J.J. McCarthy. I'm tickled at Hardball wins because he's a little odd, and he's a little different, and he drives people nuts.
Starting point is 00:22:33 And these are all things I like about public figures that are authentic. Jim is Jim through and through and doesn't care what you think. And I'll tell you something. the way, this is like an interaction I have every single week, and they're like, what's Colin Coward like? And I'm like, Colin Coward is Colin Coward through and through? And you're authentic, and that's why I love coming on this show.
Starting point is 00:22:51 I don't say weird. I just say, authentic. I like when Harbaugh doesn't, even though he says stuff sometimes and I cringe, once again, all you guys can whine and complain. He's got his quarterback situation, right? Clemson doesn't. A&M can't score. All these guys, everybody
Starting point is 00:23:07 loves, they say the right stuff. Harbaugh's clunky, you know, in a China shop and I watch them and I'm like, they're fourth in the country and I think that's exactly where they should be. They should be right there. I totally agree. They are very good. Now, they're playing nobody right now. They're 51 and a half point favorites against Hawaii. So, I mean, let's end. You play who's on the schedule. I get that. But if you're going to say you play who's on the schedule now, then you better give that, you know, opportunity to Texas A&M in November when they play Yukon or when Mercer rolls into Tuscaloosa. I will say this, though,
Starting point is 00:23:36 he's had to walk a tightrope with this quarterback situation because he has a kid in Kate McNamara that just beat Ohio State for the first time in a decade. I know. And won the division and won the Big Ten and took him to a playoff. And by the way, saved Jim Harbaugh's legacy at Michigan. Yeah. He was the quarterback that did that. And yet, there's an acknowledgement both from the fan base and the coaching staff and
Starting point is 00:23:57 probably even the team, the better version is probably JJ McCarthy. And it's a different offense, by the way, this year and a different team. Last year, they were built like a big truck. Oh, power. Run the ball, stay safe with the ball and play great defense. This year, they're a little bit more of a sports car. They've got great wide receivers, really good tight-ins, great backs, and it's an offense that could potentially average 45, 46, 47 points per game,
Starting point is 00:24:22 and you might need that upper-level athlete like J.J. McCarthy to maximize the potential of the office. Hey, you go on the road to Hawaii. Crazy things happen. It wasn't even on the road. That was in Ann Arbor, yeah. So, you know, 51 and a half points. Not even an almost upset there, by the way. Yeah, I didn't see it. By the way, if A&M loses to Miami this week, they're staring right down the barrel of one in five.
Starting point is 00:24:45 They've got to go to Arkansas. Well, not too, they play Arkansas in Arlington and Jerry World. Then they would have to go to Mississippi State and then to Alabama. How about all those boosters shelling out millions for high schoolers and they can't beat App State? Well, there's no excuses anymore at Texas A&M. They have supported their program as well as any fan base in the country. By far. Facilities, personnel, Jimbo got the 10 years.
Starting point is 00:25:08 They just, you know, they got the best recruiting class of all time. And then they got housed by App State. 186 total offensive yards. Crazy. You know, kids, you can always transfer to the West Coast. The college station is a snooze. L.A. is not. A lot of stuff happening here.
Starting point is 00:25:30 Oh, my gosh. Music festivals. Beautiful people out here. Music festivals. I've never been to one music festival in L.A. There are concerts and good ones. Music festival? You've never been to Coachella?
Starting point is 00:25:42 That's not in L.A. That's two hours away. L.A. County is massive. It's on the cusp of L.A. That's not in L.A. County, folks. That's in Palm Springs. Put your cowboy hat on.
Starting point is 00:25:52 You go out to the desert, and you may come back in two pieces, but it is a good time. By the way, Coachella, closer to Arizona than it is L.A. Just saying. Hard facts. Big J. journalism.
Starting point is 00:26:03 By the way, that Fresno State game, I may have to go to that one. You probably should. Fresno is not bad now. they're going to beat Fresno State. Oh, okay. Okay. I mean, I backed you up.
Starting point is 00:26:15 I told them they're like, I think they are a legitimate playoff contender. I just thought they could be like a top 10 team this year. Remember when he first got hired? I thought they were like, I was like, yeah, they'll probably like creep into the top 10. This is a legitimate playoff type of year. When are they going to put you on one of their games? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking.
Starting point is 00:28:31 What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jay and I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:28:53 I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now, so... Thank you for finishing that. incentives. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to
Starting point is 00:29:24 Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of ton-tons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Start Saturday strong with the big noon Saturday game of the week as number six Oklahoma battles Nebraska, followed by number 12, BYU taking on number 25, Oregon.
Starting point is 00:30:03 And finally, it all ends with a night at the horseshoe as Toledo goes head to head with number three Ohio State at 7 Eastern All-on Fox and the Fox Sports app. You know, it's funny. So, you know, I've defended Russell Wilson forever. And yesterday I got a call from a friend. They're killing me on Seattle Radio KJR, cowards defending Russell Wilson. He doesn't understand us.
Starting point is 00:30:29 And I had good friends that were texting me yesterday saying, hey, I booed him too. He left us. And my takeaway, and he doesn't love Russell Wilson. He thinks he's a little corny. Here's my thing with Russell Wilson. Like, the NBA's always been associated with style. Like players, I mean, Dr. Jay had a style.
Starting point is 00:30:49 And James Harden as a style. And international soccer players, like how they dress matters and NBA guys. I mean, Michael Jordan literally had the classic suits and the earring. LeBron's got kind of a casually hip. It's much more casual than MJ. Kobe took some big swings on style. But because of the NFL's popularity, quarterbacks now are kind of judged by what they look like not playing football or going to a game.
Starting point is 00:31:18 And so Russell doesn't quite have a style yet. Like Brady is very clean. It's a very clean look, almost corporate clean. Aaron Rogers is sort of a contrarian, anti-establish. alternative music, kind of a hipster. Mahomes is kind of playful and fun. Burroughs kind of cool, swagger. You know, everybody's got their style. Russell doesn't really have a style yet. Sometimes he wears a tux. Other times, I saw him, I've seen him wear tuxes twice in person. Like he's, it's like he's formal, but it's overly formal. And so he gets a lot of crap. There was
Starting point is 00:31:57 something funny. I saw something yesterday on the internet. I thought was so funny. They said, Russell Wilson's never looked like the same person twice. His hair styles, his dress, he's just kind of finding his way to his style. Thank God I'm not judged on that because I would finish dead last among American sportscasters. I would finish last. I have no style. I don't know what I'm doing. But it's like one of these things that it used to not matter.
Starting point is 00:32:18 Nobody cared, but there's so much access to quarterbacks before the game, off the field, that what you dress like, what you appear like, you're now being compared to international soccer stars, NBA stars, we see you on social media, and Russell's got kind of a clunky, awkward, not quite sure what it is style, and he gets a lot of heat for it. I haven't refined this take, Colin, but like Russell Wilson, I'm multiracial, a mixed background, and, you know, you kind of can toggle between groups. You know, I have a diverse background.
Starting point is 00:32:53 I've done the 23 of me, and I can kind of fit into any bucket, you know. I go to Indian jams. It's what some of my background is. can dress very corporate. I can, you know, hang out with a lot of athletes. So I kind of bounce around. I think Russell's kind of in that same mold. That's fascinating. He isn't just one guy. Like Tom Brady, you know, we know what he is. It's very corporate. Yeah. And Russ kind of bounces around and has different looks, if you will. Does that make sense or no? I think it's fast. I think, you know what? That's the kind of thing I like discussing.
Starting point is 00:33:20 I think it's fascinating. Your background. I would never think about that. Yes. I've gotten a lot of the herd audiences like, are you Portuguese, are you Hispanic? You know, like I get a lot of that. stuff and I've been getting that all my life. But I mean, Josh Allen kind of dresses casual and country. And Aaron Rogers, California guy, Bay Area guy is kind of Hollywood cool. Yeah. And Brady comes from you. Dad sold insurance. He went to Michigan. It's very corporate. And Mahomes, a Texas kid, kind of playful and fun. Russell kind of, it's interesting, toggles between multiple. And by the way, we live in a world now where you get judged on that. I mean, it used to be nobody cared about quarterbacks. It was like international soccer stuff.
Starting point is 00:34:00 NBA star, nobody else care. These NFL guys now make $50 million a year. They're the highest paid guys in America. The sports never separated more from every other sport in America. In appearance now, guys are getting, I mean, people are brutal on these guys. I think it's going to change here in the next, like, 20 years as America gets more diverse and brown, you know? People starting to look more like me than Tom Brady increasingly in America. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:25 But he, boy, he gets a lot of crap for his style, what he wears. J-Mac with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. All right, Colin, first up, Chicago Bears, you know, Justin Fields did not look awesome, but he got the W, right? That being said, former Chicago Bears' offensive coordinator,
Starting point is 00:34:45 Mike March, was not impressed. He called out Field and said he was very unsatisfied with how everyone, including the second-year quarterback play. Here's what he said. I'm just shocked at the Bears. Fields was less than remarkable. That would be the kindest thing you could say about him. They're very undisciplined.
Starting point is 00:35:03 They're just not very good. They don't have a lot of talent there. Fields is going to have to shoulder it. But ultimately, when you look at them compared to Detroit today, it just seems like Detroit has made a huge leap and the bears are still kind of muddle around. That game was hard to watch. Okay, I said this in front of you.
Starting point is 00:35:19 You were my witness a week ago. Of all the second year quarterbacks, the one I'm going to be the most patient with is Justin Fields. So why? Trevor Lawrence, offensive coach, and they spent $300 million on free agency. Trey Lance, great roster, Debo Samuel, Mac Jones, Belichick. Zach Wilson, really good. There's some interesting weapons. He's practicing today, by the way, for the Jets. Oh, he is? Yeah. Okay, Justin Fields, defensive coach, one receiver I like, a tight end that's talented but not productive, and it was in a range
Starting point is 00:35:58 and this is historically a poorly run organization. I said it before. I think the Bears are a 6th and 11 team. But I thought Sunday was the greatest example of what Justin Fields is. You have one legitimate. Dante Pettus, it gets cut by everybody, is one of his guys now, right? He was a draft pick. The Niners got him.
Starting point is 00:36:18 Didn't work. I think he went to a couple other teams. We got to be patient with this kid. He is overcoming so much. This is a bottom three. O line in the league. And he just beat the Niners with a great defensive front. Facing a great defense, right?
Starting point is 00:36:35 Completed only eight passes. But the passes that mattered, right? A couple, he found the busted plays. Okay. And came through that. That's not a great stat line, right? Okay, but it was wildly windy, a much better roster with one legitimate weapon.
Starting point is 00:36:50 You have to contextualize this performance. All I know is in the fourth quarter, he made two huge plays that ended up being pivotal in the win. By the way, we might need to book Mike March on this show. If he's willing to go in on somebody that hard after one game, it's great. You've got to contextualize what young people are working. I'd been in this business 25 years.
Starting point is 00:37:11 I came to Fox. I immediately got a huge staff. Way easier. I mean, serious, I had people like, oh, how'd it work? I'm like, I had everything for me. I had marketing. I had management. I had a great network.
Starting point is 00:37:22 I had support. That's easy. These guys come out of college. They go to the NFL and you don't like the GM. the coach, the lines, the weapons, this kid won. Who are the Justin Fields receivers at Ohio State? Are they all in the NFL now? I mean, there's no question.
Starting point is 00:37:37 Yeah. He had better receivers in college than he does in the NFL. That's not even available. That's not even available. It's a line, too. Yeah. Yeah. All right, next up, the Cleveland Browns.
Starting point is 00:37:45 Start the season 1 and 0 for the first time since 2004 with the W over the Panthers. Jacoby Brissette, eh, 18 and $34.47 and a score. It was enough to get the victory, but Kevin Stefanski is still looking for more. improvement from Deshawn Watson's filling. I think he will continue to get better. Having said that, I know there were some misses, but really, really proud of how he finished that game. There was some opportunities early, but you've got to understand that these games are,
Starting point is 00:38:13 there are going to be some moments of some highs. You've got to battle through the lows. You look around the league, and there's some tough moments. There's some really good defenses out there. So for us, it's going to be about, you know, learning from the plays that we would like back. and then just putting a plan together to be able to go perform this week versus Jets. Let's not forget how good this roster is.
Starting point is 00:38:36 Like all things said, we've paid a lot of attention to Baker Mayfield and Deshaun Watts. This is still a great O line with an elite receiver, a really good tight end, a star running back, the best edge rusher in the game, and an elite corner, and a very, very good young lineback. Don't forget Kareem Hunt, the backup running back to Chubb. It was awesome. Now, their center got hurt, so there's a little instability. This is still a top eight roster to me in the league. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:39:04 They go from being pick-em to an underdog against the Panthers to big favorites against the Jets this week. Is that a game you're watching? I think Cleveland's going to win it handily. Handily? Yeah. A slight disagreement there. But let's go out of story number three. The ongoing trade speculation surrounding Russell Westbrook.
Starting point is 00:39:21 Oh, Lakers' talk. It is not going to slow down following his latest move. Russ has listed his Brentwood home in Los Angeles for sale according to a post on Zillow. I don't know what he's asking, Cowherd, but maybe we'll look into that. We're in the housing market. He's reportedly open to a trade,
Starting point is 00:39:37 but has not requested one from the Lakers yet. Well, this is a thing. Because where he lives, I happen to know the area, you don't put your house up for sale. He's not upgrading. Like, if you leave that area, you're leaving L.A. Yeah. So my takeaway is that's, he changed agents.
Starting point is 00:39:54 His house is for sale. You know, you ever gone online and they're having like top five signs, your spouse is cheating or something. The top two signs you're going to be traded. One of them is you change agents and you put your house up for sale. You know, I'm going to start looking on Zillow in Dallas to see if Mike McCarthy put his house up for sale yet because he's in trouble with Cooper Rush in Dallas. Jay Mack with the news.
Starting point is 00:40:19 Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Hi, this is Jay Glazer, and you may know me for the world of football or fighting or even shows like HBO's ballers. What you don't know is for my entire life, I have lived in something I refer to as the gray, depression, anxiety. So now I'm coming out with a new podcast, Unbreakable, a mental health podcast with Jay Glazer, where each week, while we talk about mental health, I hope to describe it.
Starting point is 00:40:51 Give it words. Listen to Unbreakable with Jay Glazer on the Eye Hard. radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast.
Starting point is 00:43:35 Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far far away, such as the biology. of ton-tons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The numbers don't lie in the last decade. Over 4 million people have chosen Simpleaseaf home security
Starting point is 00:44:08 to protect their home. It's Simply Safe. Your safety is the only thing that matters. Free indoor security camera, check it out. Simplysafecolon.com. So we didn't talk about it much. We gave it about three or four minutes earlier in the beginning of last hour, is that Giselle Bunch and Tom Brady's wife came out publicly for the first time. And there's a lot of stories out there.
Starting point is 00:44:30 I wasn't terribly comfortable talking about him. I had a good source on it. Tom and Giselle were kind of fighting over the retired, unretired thing. Now it's gone public. Boston gossip columnists were on this. New York gossip columnists. Those papers have that stuff. Tom and Janelle have been battling ever since he unretired.
Starting point is 00:44:52 And so she came out in Elle magazine and basically said, I'd like him to be more present. She goes, I've got my concerns. It's a violent sport. I got kids. I'd like Tom to be more present. I have definitely had these conversations with him over and over again. Ultimately, I feel that everybody has to make a decision that works for them, and he needs to follow his joy.
Starting point is 00:45:11 And Brady has his kind of week leader in the football season, him Jim Gray and Tom Brady have pod. And I think this is, you're successful. You've been doing something a long time. Sports is very unique because you retire often in your 30s. So you're sitting there looking at 50 years. What are you going to do? You've been famous.
Starting point is 00:45:29 You've been beloved. And you're going to play golf? I mean, it's a different ball game. And so Brady talked to Jim Gray about, you know, aging. It's more difficult. And here's how it sounds. You have different priorities when you get older, you know. And I think when I was 25, it was a simplicity of a 25.
Starting point is 00:45:46 year old life. And I think when you're 45 and you have a lot of other commitments and obligations, which are very important to you, namely children that are growing up. I haven't had a Christmas in 23 years. You know, I haven't had a Thanksgiving in 23 years. I haven't celebrated birthdays with people that I care about that are, you know, born from August to late January. And, you know, I'm not able to be at funerals and I'm not able to be at weddings. And I think there comes a point in your life where you say, you know what, I've had my fill. It's enough. And time to go on to move into other parts of life. Well, it does go to show you.
Starting point is 00:46:20 Don't be envious and jealous of anybody. Everybody's got to sacrifice something to be great at something else. You're going to give up Christmases. If you're an NBA star, their biggest games are on Christmas. You know, LeBron, he plays on Christmas every single year. And Tom Brady, you didn't get Thanksgiving every single year. So it's the reality, the complicated duality of a very, very successful life. the best CEOs in the world and the people that found companies during emergencies.
Starting point is 00:46:50 I was just talking to somebody yesterday that was going to have a big vacation in Paris got over there. The company went sideways. It lasted 20 hours. They had to get back on a plane and cancel a two-week vacation. Try telling that to your husband or wife. You've been planning it for two years of vacation in Europe. So, you know, it's a rich person issue, but nonetheless, it's an issue. And so I said this earlier and I really believe it.
Starting point is 00:47:14 there are times it would be like really easy to retire. Like you don't like your work. You're exhausted physically. Or it's getting harder and harder. Like I understand certain people in jobs. You look around everybody's young and techie and you're old and not real techie and you're like, I'm getting out of here. You don't want to make cold calls anymore on Wall Street.
Starting point is 00:47:35 Like I get it. But for Brady, it's the opposite. There's about seven great quarterbacks in the league. He's one of them. And most of them are in the other conference. in his division, it's Baker Mayfield, Marcus Marriota, James Winston. That should be six wins a year.
Starting point is 00:47:52 You're at six wins in division. He's got the best defense in division. You know, so like it's hard. It's gotten easier for him. It's the weakest division in football, and he's the captain of it. He's got the best receiving core, arguably in the entire national football league. He's in the easier conference. So, like, I get it for him.
Starting point is 00:48:11 Tom's looking around, and I think a lot of people, a lot of men and women are looking around as they age and you hit a number and it's the number you're supposed to retire. I think Nick Saban's going through this. And Nick Saban's looking around and going, well, outside of Kirby Smart, who's taking recruits from me? I've got it rolling. I got momentum. I'm winning games. Outside of the guy at Georgia, I win all the recruiting battles. Like, I get it. It's tough. And I think Tom's in that space. I think if he was in the AFC looking up at Josh Allen Mahomes, Herbert, I think it'd be easier to step aside. Hour three next.
Starting point is 00:48:49 Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for band.
