Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hard Way with your favorite therapist and host, Kear Games. This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor. It signals to the world that you're not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Listen and learn the hard way on the AHA radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of Tontons and Wampas on the ice planet, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:02:06 Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Welcome back to The Herd. I'm Joy Taylor. In for Colin Cowherd. Sorry, I was just getting one more sip of my coffee before we came back.
Starting point is 00:02:41 Nine cups of coffee a day, Jimmy Butler told us he has. Nine to ten cups of coffee a day. I would not sleep for two weeks. If you have Cuban coffee in Miami, then you're really not sleeping. I used to do that in college and sit around. He's like a little, little bit of Cuban coffee. That's the best time. Taylor Rooks joined us in a few minutes.
Starting point is 00:03:04 I also talked to Ryan Massillo and Emmanuel Acho in studio. Ryan is joining me. You often see Ryan in the booth with us. And today he is filling in. I do not have ten. You're doing double duty. Yeah, I guess you could say that as I fade the music out there. Yeah, double duty.
Starting point is 00:03:24 And I will not be having 10 cups of coffee either. that is way too much coffee. It's impressive. Yeah. I drink a fair amount of coffee in a day, but I am not to the level of Jimmy Butler. Actually, you know, when I think about it, I probably could train myself to do that because my aunts and my grandmothers, my grandmother and aunts would always have a pot of coffee, and they definitely made several pots of coffee throughout the day.
Starting point is 00:03:48 It's a very Pittsburgh thing to drink a pot of coffee yourself. Like they have the huge coffee mugs, probably like a northeast thing, whereas, It's cold. It's just nice to have a hot cup of coffee. So you could probably go through 9 or 10 cups pretty easily. It's fun show today. It was great to talk to Jimmy Butler and get into the Ben Simmons conversation a little bit. But we're all waiting on Aaron Rogers.
Starting point is 00:04:11 We are all just refreshing our Twitter for the news to find out where Aaron Rogers is going to go or if he's going to stay. Is he going to be the highest paid player in the league? Is he going to retire? We don't know. But while that domino is yet to fall, the conversation. about the quarterback market is being had, Jimmy Garoppolo, Carson Wentz. There's a lot of other free agents that we haven't really been discussing because everything
Starting point is 00:04:37 is contingent on what Aaron Rogers does. But there is sort of this feeling that there's going to be all this frantic movement with quarterbacks in the league because obviously everyone is trying to get that guy and you have to have that guy if you're going to win the Super Bowl. That's very obvious now. If you're even going to make it to the Super Bowl, you have to have that franchise guy. Well, I don't believe there's that many of those guys walking the planet to begin with, but you are always trying to level up. And in most cases, some teams would like to level up,
Starting point is 00:05:07 but are stuck in contracts or don't have another better option. So let's just break down. Let's get a better overall view of what the quarterback market really is. So we have to start with who is available. The free agents that are out there, actual free agents. So there's James Winston, Teddy Bridgewater, Marcus Marriota, Andy Dalton, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Mitchell Chubesky, Jacoby Brissette, and Terrod Taylor. Those are the free agents. Those are guys that are on the market. Jimmy Garapolo is on the trade block. Obviously, Deshawn Watson and Carson Wentz. Now, the Sean Watson is the number one guy actually in this market who will be moved. But of course, he is dealing with a legal situation, which we all know about. So we have to consider that when we talk about his situation.
Starting point is 00:05:57 And Carson Wentz, who I don't think should be moved, but the Colts are very upset with how that season ended and probably are looking to move him or at the very least get a much better deal with him there and restructure his contract. Also, we had up there potentially could be available, which is Aaron Rogers, as we discussed, and Russell Wilson, who I don't think is going anywhere until the end of this contract, but he did put himself out there as he might be available last year when he was upset with the front office and Pete Carroll. that seems to have died down a little bit,
Starting point is 00:06:27 but he obviously could be available. And then wildcards are Tom Brady. 1% is what I'm giving that he comes back. But it's being talked about, so we have to put it in there. And Kyler Murray's situation is a little weird, although it seems like they're settling down. They're going to pay him, which is the right thing to do.
Starting point is 00:06:41 So that's really what the, those are the names that are actually on the market available, could be available wildcards. Now here are the teams that don't have a quarterback. The Broncos, the Buccaneers, the Saints, Steelers, and the Washington football team. Now, yes, guys, I know literally they do have guys in the building, but we know that they don't have anything close to a franchise guy,
Starting point is 00:07:05 despite what the Steelers might be telling you, and despite whatever they paid, Taysam Hill. All of these teams need a quarterback. Teams that might upgrade are the Colts, the Giants who have said that they're sticking with Daniel Jones, but again, we'll see. The Panthers and the Texans who have said that they're sticking with Davis Mills, but if Russell Wilson's like, hey, I want to come to Houston, I'm pretty sure they're going to move off of Davis Mills.
Starting point is 00:07:29 Now there's teams that are questionable who have a guy, but there are still questions about whether he's the future or what's going to happen or they'd like to upgrade, but they're in a contract situation. The Browns, Dolphins, Eagles, Falcons, Lions, and the Titans. I think all of the guys that are there are going to be starting for these teams next year. But we are still either seeing what they have there and Jalen Hertz. We know what Matt Ryan is, but there's contract situations. and Ryan Tannehill obviously has limitations. The rest of the league is teams that have a rookie contract, a rookie quarterback, have a contract in place with the guy that they can't get out of,
Starting point is 00:08:04 or they have a franchise quarterback. And that is a big group of teams. So when you really look at it, when you really break it down, there's probably only four teams that are really going to make an aggressive move at the quarterback position. And I believe that is the Broncos, the Colts, the Steelers and Washington. Now the Broncos obviously made a move to get Nathaniel Hackett.
Starting point is 00:08:30 They are making a play for Aaron Rogers. They seem to be the number one destination if Aaron Rogers is going to ask for a trade out of Green Bay. I also believe that the Broncos would probably be the best trade partner with Green Bay for multiple reasons. They can give pieces. Green Bay is in Cap Hell. They have some young pieces they could probably throw in there, some draft picks, whatever. also Broncos are in the AFC. So that makes sense that they wouldn't want to send Aaron Rogers if they have to force a trade somewhere
Starting point is 00:08:59 because despite what everyone's saying there in Green Bay about they didn't agree to a trade, they're not going to keep Aaron Rogers stuck there if he really wants to leave. First of all, he could just retire. And it's going to look bad on Green Bay. And he can opt out of the last year of his contract anyway. So they're going to make a trade if he wants to leave Green Bay.
Starting point is 00:09:19 So I think the Broncos is obviously the number one spot there They want a quarterback. They've been dealing with the rotation of quarterbacks since Peyton Manning. So they're going to do something. The Colts, I'm not so sure of. I think part of this is they want a better deal for Carson Wentz. They want a better rate for the way that he's playing. I don't think he was bad throughout the season.
Starting point is 00:09:40 Obviously, it was not to the smoothest season. They missed the playoffs and the ending of the season was a disaster. But I don't think that they should overreact because we can go back to that list of quarterbacks that's out there. and unless they plan on making a move in the draft, or unless they're just kind of waiting to see if maybe Aaron Rogers wants to go there, which I actually think the cult is a great destination for Aaron Rogers
Starting point is 00:09:58 if he was interested in it, they're probably going to stick with Carson Wentz as well. So that actually eliminates a team from this list, but they have clearly made it clear that they'd like to move off of Carson Wentz. The Steelers are saying they're going to stick with Mason Rudolph. I'm telling you right now, Steelers, all right? I am not for this.
Starting point is 00:10:17 I like Mason. I think he is a great, backup quarterback. There are three categories. There's the guy. We know who those guys are. There are bridge to average quarterbacks. And then there are backup quarterbacks that are just being forced to start. That's Mason Rudolph. You don't want to go into this situation in this division at the AFC North with Joe Burrow. Lamar Jackson and the Ravens are going to come back healthy. Baker Mayfield and that Brown team is going to come back healthy. Mason Rudolph cannot be the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I agree with Ryan Clark who said that they're just, they're not in championship mode. They're not the Steelers and the standard of the Steelers if that's what they're
Starting point is 00:10:54 doing this year. They may be just laying quiet and saying this so that they can try to get Kenny Pickett in the draft. He seems to be the number one prospect at the quarterback position right now, but they need to make a move. They don't have a quarterback. And Jimmy Garapolo would be a great bridge. I actually think Mitchell Tribisky, I know everyone's going to freak out, but as a bridge quarterback is a lower end starter, but a starter, Mitchell Trubisky would be a nice bridge until you find your franchise guy. They have some options there. And then Washington has said that they are actually going to make a play for a big ticket quarterback. Now, who wants to go to Washington? I don't know. And that's not because of Ron Rivera. It's not because of their roster.
Starting point is 00:11:35 But listen, I talked to Washington commander. That's going to take some time. I finally adjusted to the Washington football team. Now we've got commanders, which I'm really kind of disappointed about, like I like the Washington football team name. Anyway, the Washington commanders have a very dysfunctional organization. That is not news to anyone. And if I am someone like Russell Wilson who would be, that would be a good landing spot, they have pieces.
Starting point is 00:12:05 Ron Rivera is a coach that's coached in a Super Bowl. It's in a great market in a completely winnable division. That's a good destination. But you got to consider the ownership. You have to consider that. Now, it would be great for Washington, but if I'm someone like Russell Wilson, Aaron Rogers is not going here.
Starting point is 00:12:22 So if I'm someone like Russell Wilson, and I don't know how many other big-ticket guys are out there, Deshawn Watson, that's a whole other conversation going to Washington. I don't know who it is they're referring to. Maybe this is for next year, but they're going to be in the quarterback market and they're likely going to sign one of these free agents
Starting point is 00:12:41 or trade for someone. So when you look at the big picture of everything, I don't think there's really going to be that many teams that make a move for quarterback. I think the Broncos are absolutely going to do something. I think Washington's absolutely going to do something. The Colts say they want to, but if they get a better deal for Carson Wentz, they probably should stick with that because Carson Wentz will get signed immediately. He will have offers immediately. And the Steelers cannot run it back with Mason Rudolph, but they keep saying they're going to. So once again, we're waiting on that guy.
Starting point is 00:13:13 make a decision when he does. We'll see where the pieces fall. We'll talk to Taylor, Rooks of Bleacher Report and Turner Sports coming up next and discuss what's going on with the Lakers and James Hardin makes his debut tonight next on the herd. One more herd? Welcome back to the Her Joy Taylor in for Colin Cowherd. That is Ryan Music. It will give us the news at the bottom of the hour. Let's go out to Taylor Rooks of Bleacher Report and Turner Sports.
Starting point is 00:18:03 My dear, dear friend Taylor, thank you for joining me today. Absolutely, I'm so happy to be here. You look great. I'm loving the show so far, and I also agree with everything Colin said about Matthew Stafford. Yeah, I had some questions about Matthew Stafford throughout the regular season, but he has removed all doubt and deserves all of his flowers. He's done an amazing job. Taylor, I read recently that you have done over 200 interviews. Yeah, over like 2,000 interviews, I would say.
Starting point is 00:18:34 Oh, my God. Oh, my God, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. No, no, it's okay. All good. I think they were counting, you know, from high school and college and the pressers I've done and the sit downs and all the things. I would say my one-on-ones. I've probably done more around 200.
Starting point is 00:18:49 But if we're talking about the amount of scrums I've done and one-offs and things like that, it probably is closer to 2000. But a lot of that is because I want my focus to be interviewing. Like I try to only do that. So the numbers have certainly racked up over time. Well, listen, all of those count, as we know in this business, reps matter. So, you know, when you start, all of that leads up to being the great interviewer that you are today. She recently spoke to Damar de Rosen, Micah, Micahe, Micaheufins, on her show. So make sure you check those out.
Starting point is 00:19:21 So you've done over 2,000 interviews. Who is somebody you haven't interviewed that is on your interview bucket list? Because which also includes, you know, Barack Obama, who you have. Yeah, that was probably my favorite. But, you know, I love to interview Michelle Obama. I always talk about hopefully one day interviewing Serena Williams. I would just love to see her in a sit down setting. So Serena is absolutely top of my list.
Starting point is 00:19:48 I adore her. She is one of those athletes that, you know, like many others, like a Tom Brady, you look at them and you think about how good you can be. Right. Like watching Serena Williams is such this like emotional experience and you're rooting for her so much. I just feel super connected to her as an athlete, as a black woman. I'd love to sit down with her one day. So you were at All-Star in Cleveland, and speaking of interviews,
Starting point is 00:20:13 you recently posted about Alan Iverson, and a big moment for me and my career was when I was covering Big Three, I got to interview Alan Iverson. And he is such a, he's such an impactful figure in culture, in sports, and we were talking about him on the show this week,
Starting point is 00:20:31 just how he, with J.A. Adonda, how in some ways maybe he was ahead of his time, but he was so influential to young people and to young basketball players. What was the scene like there with the NBA 75 and Michael Jordan? And it just felt very, it felt very celebratory, but I don't know, like jubilant. Like I was happy to see all of them together. Yeah. I mean, that was absolutely by far my favorite part of the weekend.
Starting point is 00:21:01 I mean, being in the arena, as they brought out members of that NBA 75 team, it was such a, surreal and beautiful moment. And when you think about it, just the fact that all those players were in the same room at the same time was unbelievable. I mean, I thought that everything was going to collapse when they show Michael Jordan on the screen. It was so loud in there. I thought I was going to faint. But, you know, also just the juxtaposition of those younger guys doing the intro to, you know, was John Moran and Devin Booker and Luca Donchich and Car Anthony Towns. And so to see that this is the next generation, people that have a really good chance. in the next 25 years being a part of this ceremony too.
Starting point is 00:21:39 It was just the past, the present, and the future of the NBA all in one place. And I also think in the league we're having this kind of watershed moment right now where you're watching those players that eventually this league is going to belong to them. So that moment was just you could feel the gravity of it in a lot of different ways. But it really was like a dream. We're talking to Taylor Rooks, Bleacher Report, and Turner Sports. They have a moment like that at the pro-phopofer. Hall of Fame, they have a dinner the night before the speeches. And if you're a
Starting point is 00:22:11 hardcore NFL fan or just, you'd like something similar to what Taylor's talking about, that's sort of what it is. Like, it's all of the, the Hall of Famers in one building. And it just, it feels like, oh my God, there's so much great. Yeah, like, whoa. In this building right now. So the NBA is back tonight. It was actually back last night, but it's back from All-Star. And there's two big storylines moving forward that everyone is going to be paying very close attention to in Ben Simmons moving to the Nets and Hardin making his debut with the Sixers tonight. We spoke to Jimmy Butler earlier about Hardin and how he thinks that's going to work. And he said he thinks it's going to go very well. I believe that the Sixers have won this trade for
Starting point is 00:22:49 multiple reasons. But what do you expect from Hardin with Philadelphia? Yeah, you know, I do agree with Jimmy simply because, you know, sometimes when these trades happen, we do tend to look at them in a vacuum in terms of, okay, who won, who lost. But this is one of the rare instant. And is where both teams won simply because somebody who didn't want to be there is no longer there, which in turn is going to impact the team. Ben needed to go somewhere else. He did. It wasn't working with James and Brooklyn.
Starting point is 00:23:18 He's gone. So both teams just by definition got better simply because of that. I think for the 76ers, seeing Harden and beat on the court together is going to be great. It's interesting, though, because when James got to Brooklyn, I asked him, you know, what parts of his game will have to change for it to work and what parts of it will have to stay the same for it to work. And he said his playmaking ability needed to remain the same, you know, getting big as good finishes around the rim. And he said he understood that it won't always be about scoring for him. But now that he's in Philly, that's flip some because they need
Starting point is 00:23:47 him to be ball dominant. You know, Hardin is often going to start with the ball in his hands. That adjustment is really going to come for Embed. He even said it's going to be an adjustment that, you know, he's going to have to become more of a pick and roll player, maybe pick and pop. So tonight I'm more so going to be looking at that defense or maybe, lack of defense that will be happening with the Sixers, you know, their rotations and really how they balance the change with Hardin. So you have really in-depth conversations with players and in your interviews. And I think it's still a very clunky space for all of us to have this mental health conversation. So it's layered with Ben Simmons. I do think that some of the
Starting point is 00:24:27 critique of Ben Simmons is fair based off of his personality, the history of his play, how he's been in big moments. That's fair. But I don't in any way believe that Ben Simmons has fabricated this mental health story. Now, crazier things have happened, but that's a pretty extreme thing to lie about in today's society. Like, there will be drastic consequences if that turns out to be true. So, and he's not playing now, even though he is in Brooklyn. Like, he's still coming back. So what is your opinion of really the whole conversation surrounding Ben Simmons and his exit from the Sixers, the mental health situation, and why he's not playing now that he's in Brooklyn? Yeah, well, you know, I think a lot of that stems from what we believe mental health looks like,
Starting point is 00:25:18 what we believe struggles look like, you know, that video happened and he was literally just on the basketball court talking to people and people were like, oh my God, I thought, I thought something was wrong with him. It's like, well, the thing about mental health. there's a lot of time, this is like internal. You're figuring out how to deal with that on your own. You're figuring out, you know, what's going to make you happy. He just had a major adjustment, something that hopefully does make him happy and put him in a bigger space. But I think it's very dangerous when we start to feel like we can look at somebody and by simply looking at them, we can determine what their mental state is. So Ben Simmons has come out in reports and all these
Starting point is 00:25:53 things and said that he was dealing with struggles in Philadelphia. You have to believe that at face value because the only person that understands his state of mind is him. So I would definitely caution people to be very wary to, you know, have hot takes or think pieces about what Ben Simmons thinks, especially with something, you know, as fragile as this. And when you really look at it just in terms of like, you know, the base level and on a human level, if you're at a job where things are necessarily going your way, you know you want to get out, you know you're struggling. That's also very clear, you know, that people in Philly, they were booing him. He was like enemy number one, even things on like the news channels were making fun of him.
Starting point is 00:26:33 Like that would be really difficult for any human being. So just like simply that aspect of it, you would think somebody would be struggling as well. So I just encourage everybody in anything in life to put yourself in that person's shoes and understand that the only person that knows what's going on is that person. And that's what I think for Ben. And I hope he thrives in Brooklyn. I think that he will thrive in Brooklyn. You know, the beauty of it with Ben and Brooklyn is,
Starting point is 00:27:01 as much as I would love for Ben to shoot, trust me, I would love for him to shoot. The beauty of it is now he really doesn't have to. You know, he's surrounded by shooters. He can focus on everything that he does well. He's an elite pastor. He's an elite defender. He has an amazing ability to create. And this is really the perfect situation for him.
Starting point is 00:27:17 So once his conditioning is on track, they feel like he's ready for, you know, actual NBA gameplay. I think it's absolutely going to be a show in Brooklyn. I mean, it's Ben Simmons, Kevin Durant, and Kyrie Irving. It's got to be good. Kyrie Irving sometimes, but it's going to be good. Well, it's looking like he might get back full time, depending on what New York City mandates are. We're talking to Taylor Rooks, Bleacher Report, and Turner Sports.
Starting point is 00:27:41 If the former co-star in Philadelphia for Ben Simmons was Joelle Embed, it seems like he is the favorites, like he will win the MVP this year. Do you think he is the MVP? Yeah. I mean, he's having like probably the best season of his career. It doesn't seem like he has, he's showing any signs of stopping. Right now at this moment, I would say him. But it's really fun because there's so many good people in the conversation.
Starting point is 00:28:09 You know, you obviously have Embed in there. But then yet people want to talk about Demar and the season he is having and John, the season he's having. So it does tend to be a narrative vote. I really do try my best to look at what's happening on the court. I am a voter. and it gives me so much anxiety, but I love it. And I think that, you know, at this moment, it's probably in B.
Starting point is 00:28:31 But there is season left. Big things can happen. But he's absolutely having an amazing season. Yeah, there is a lot that can still happen. We're out here in Los Angeles, and there is a lot happening with the Los Angeles Lakers. And I get it all the time everywhere I go. Lakers fans wanting to know what to do, how to solve it. What's happening?
Starting point is 00:28:50 Why are we not, you know, number one and winning the championship? and, you know, all that. I think it's very layered with the Lakers. I'm going to expound on this a little bit later in the show, but it just feels like everyone's trying to position for it's not my fault right now. And I hate that that's where they've gotten. But what is your opinion of what's going on with the Lakers right now? I mean, my opinion is they're going to have to do something to figure it out.
Starting point is 00:29:19 I don't necessarily know what that thing is at this moment, but what's happening right now isn't working. And I think that was probably the biggest surline of the trade deadline was the fact that nothing happened for them. But the thing about the Lakers, but specifically LeBron, is that when he is on your team, there's always going to be a major microscope on everything that is happening.
Starting point is 00:29:41 And when things go wrong, people are like, oh, it was GM LeBron. Or when things go right, they're like, oh, it's because it was LeBron. Like, that's just the nature of how it's always going to be. It doesn't matter. The team that LeBron, is on. But I say that to say, that means that when things are going wrong, they also are going
Starting point is 00:29:57 to look to LeBron to fix it. And I think that he also, in a lot of ways, looks at himself to fix it, too. As much as I wanted this Westbrook situation to work, it feels like it isn't. But I don't think that that has anything to do with Westbrook as a player. It has to do with Westbrook and its situation, the same way it does with every single player. I don't think these conversations about whether or not, I know, Westbrook is elite as we say. Our Westbrook is as good as we say are fair. Westbrook is actually and very obviously, you know, an elite player and a talented player and all the things we dream with him to be,
Starting point is 00:30:32 but maybe the situation just wasn't the right one for him. And I think that once that's figured out, everything will be okay. Also keeping AD healthy, you know, it breaks my heart every time he goes down, just to feel like your body is betraying you in that moment. So, you know, it's health issues, it's personnel issues. It's a bunch of things, but I would caution, you know, Laker fans to know, like, it's okay. This happens to teams. You guys won a championship.
Starting point is 00:30:58 I can't say that about my team. But all these things, they ebb and flow, and that is the nature of the NBA. Yeah, Taylor, Lakers fans and Los Angeles in general were not very measured with our expectations of things. So that's all I ever say when someone talks to me about the Lakers. And, like, expectations need to be rational. with this team, but they aren't, and I think that's a big part of it. And as you mentioned, AD being healthy. So I want to ask you really quickly a little bit about the NFL. Obviously, the big story right now is Aaron Rogers and what he's going to do.
Starting point is 00:31:31 I don't know what Aaron Rogers is thinking or planning ever. And I feel like I'm just like on the strings, like with everybody else, but like that's fine. That's where I am. This is what I do. So, but that's what's happening. I think that Aaron Rogers, for multiple reasons, should leave Green Bay. I think for his legacy, I think that the story has hit a wall. I think the ability for the Packers moving forward based off of their cap situation has also hit a wall
Starting point is 00:32:02 for what they should expect to do in the postseason. So I think it would be best served for him to leave Green Bay. What do you think Aaron Rogers should do? Because we have no idea what he's going to do. Yeah. I mean, it's one of those things where the answers seems obvious. like Aaron Rogers absolutely should leave Green Bay. You know, it's that relationship that you're in that you've told everybody you don't want to be in that you don't necessarily know how to get out.
Starting point is 00:32:29 You decide you're going to give you like one more go and then everything still doesn't work. And any of my girlfriend told me that, I'd say, okay, let's go. It's time to leave. And I think that Aaron Rogers is, you know, probably feeling that way too. But, you know, you have an affinity to this team. You know, he loves the Packers. You know, he loves the fans. He loves his teammates.
Starting point is 00:32:48 You know, that is one thing about Ann Rogers. You never hear anybody say that he is a bad teammate. So whatever issues he's having with, you know, the front office, that is not permeating to, you know, his brothers on the field and the product that he's putting out. You know, he still is playing at a high level, of course. But I do think it is time to go. I think that we all saw that writing on the wall when he was upset about Jordan Love, you know, and not being consulted in that decision.
Starting point is 00:33:13 And I'm a firm believer that wherever you are happiest at, is probably where you will thrive at. Will you succeed at? Will you play the best at? And I just don't know if the Packers give him that environment at this moment in time. It's just something like we saw with Odell, right? The moment he came to a place that worked for him, look what happened. And I think that we'll probably see that with Aaron Rogers as well.
Starting point is 00:33:36 But I think, you know, a lot of it depends on how he handles that, you know, break up per se, you know, where he goes, what that goodbye is like. and if it's done the right way. Because I think so many times, that's what tarnishes people's opinions of others as how the thing is done. I mean, Aaron Rogers has proven obviously how good of a quarterback he is, how great of a quarterback he is. But now it's just making sure that that split is, you know, amicable,
Starting point is 00:34:05 and it leaves a good taste in everyone's mouth. But it's absolutely time to go. I agree. I actually thought of someone I want you to interview. You haven't interviewed Bill Belichick, right? I haven't, but I would love that. We need to sit down with Taylor Rookson, Bill Belichick. Hey, speak it.
Starting point is 00:34:22 This has to happen. Listen, we're going to get all the tea about that dynasty eventually once Bill retires because Tom's done. Tom's not coming back, right? I say Tom doesn't come back. But I don't know, could you, I was having a conversation with my friends about this the other day. Could you see him just having like a backup QB role on a team to kind of
Starting point is 00:34:45 be around the game, kind of nurture a young QB coming up. I just don't know how long he can stay away from it. I don't either. You know, like, that is someone, he loves it so much? I'm like, is he going to coach? I don't know if I see him in the booth. I don't be on a team in some capacity. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:35:05 I think, I think he's got to stay retired. It's, it's time. Yeah, like, it's tough. Listen, as long as he is not tormenting the Falcons any longer, I don't really care. We got to get the Bill Belichick interview. Bill Belichick, if you're listening, you got to sit down with Taylor. Taylor, thank you so much for joining us.
Starting point is 00:35:23 Make sure you check out her show, her recent interviews with Damar, DeRosen, D.K. Metcalfe and Micah, Micah, and Micah Parson's. Bleacher Report and Turner Sports. Thank you so much, Taylor. Great to see you. You too. Bye, Joy. Sorry, Ryan.
Starting point is 00:35:38 I went along with Taylor. Listen. Now I see how Colin feels. I fully understand my role on this show, and that is. much more important than me. I'm very sorry. You have nothing to apologize for. We'll sneak in another story in the last

Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jek. And I'm Alex English. We pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Starting point is 00:38:53 To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:39:16 Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you here on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid?

Starting point is 00:40:39 When me and Taylor gets a talking, It's, uh, someone's got to get in my ear, let me know. You forget me, Ryan? I'll, you know. Yeah, I'll forgive you. I'll forgive you. See, this is an appropriate time to apologize. And there I am apologizing.
Starting point is 00:40:53 And Ryan Rissillo of the ringer. Host of the Ryan Rissillo podcast. Thank you for joining us, Ryan. Appreciate it. Yeah, good to see you, Joyce. Thanks. So I saw that you were talking about Zion recently. and I have some thoughts about what the situation is. I've heard some things, as I'm sure you have.
Starting point is 00:41:16 But it's twofold. I think that the Pelicans can't really stand on their reputation, Chris Paul, Anthony Davis, and now Zion is unhappy. But also, Zion has lived up to all of the fears that people had for him coming into the league, and he has constantly injured. The weight has been a bit of an issue, and he's missed 58% of the games. So what, in your opinion, or based off of your sources, is really going on with Zion in New Orleans? Well, I think everything you said about their history is fair.
Starting point is 00:41:48 I would say that they've definitely stepped up in the way they've compensated front office people, the training staff. I mean, there was a time there where it was considered one of the worst spots that you could land in the NBA. So I do think that things have gotten better. The part of this with Zion that's really frustrating is that we know once he's actually playing, he's one of the most dominant offensive players in the league. I mean, he was unbelievable in what he did last year. And I think the front office has actually done a pretty good job for the other team that after a disaster starts, it basically been 500.
Starting point is 00:42:15 And if they had to Zion, you know, I wouldn't pick him to come out of the West, but they'd be really competitive. So I think it's twofold. Like, if he has issues and it's not where he wants to be long term, which we still don't really know that that's the case, because he's also going to want this rookie Mac extension. So he's going to have to get out there and play because that's just going to happen out of nowhere somewhere else. He has to figure out a way to commit to being ready and taking care of himself. in a way that I would say most people around the team have said, you know, he's a young kid who's been dominant, he's gotten away with his approach because he's just been so good and so productive.
Starting point is 00:42:46 And so he hasn't really changed his approach. Well, clearly now with a second injury, he needs to change it a bit. But really for him, like when people talk about joy, him saying, well, he'll never play for the Pelicans again, I don't think it's close to that level of discontent. Because, one, he doesn't really have any freedom. He's still on the rookie scale contract. And number two, he's going to want to get that max. only going to happen once they see that he's ready to go again and reminds us of the player that we
Starting point is 00:43:11 saw last year. So Ben Simmons is in Brooklyn, but isn't playing yet. It's still kind of a murky situation. It's a little sensitive with the mental health part of things and when he's going to be available. I am not optimistic about how things are going to go in Brooklyn, but what is your opinion of how Ben Simmons career is going to go moving forward, particularly in Brooklyn? He definitely has less pressure on him now than he did in Philadelphia. And let's face it, for an NBA fan base in a city, Brooklyn's a little more forgiving than Philadelphia is. Philadelphia is a tough place to play. So if, I feel like we've said if now for two straight years with Brooklyn, which has been fair,
Starting point is 00:43:49 if it is Durant and Kyrie and some of the New York City mandates change and Kyrie's able to go full-time, not just in a way games, I think it's a great spot for Simmons because he can focus on defense. When you look at even a guy like Brown, who's like this undersized five that they've played where they sort of inverted their offense, that's kind of a lot. going to be Ben Simmons role. So he's going to be a five on offense where he can handle the ball and then just live on these cuts away from two scores that you have to worry about or the shooting that they have out there. So I actually think his life is a lot easier because it's not going to feel like, hey, when Embed is bottled up or Embed's not out there or Embed's getting
Starting point is 00:44:24 double-teamed in the post, now we need you, our All-Star, right? Because the branding of Ben Simmons is that he's this guy completely changes your franchise. Well, offensively, he's never really been that. So Philadelphia was always asking him to kind of carry that burden. He doesn't have to carry any of that now in Brooklyn, again, if everything is right. And then he can just focus on playing defense. They can go small. I think they can do a lot of different things. I think it's a really good fit for him.
Starting point is 00:44:48 But I am obviously still concerned seeing somebody that look completely uncomfortable with the place where he works. And that's on a basketball court the last time we saw him when they lost against the Atlanta Hawks. Yeah, there's just so many qualifiers around the situation that I'm like, eh, I'm just going to watch and see. I don't know what to expect. If it's great, cool. If it's not, I'm not going to be surprised. There's just so many qualifiers around that situation in Brooklyn. So you mentioned the Sixers.
Starting point is 00:45:11 James Hardin's making his debut tonight. I'm more optimistic about how this is going to go and how this is going to fit. But what do you think about Hardin and the Sixers? I think for Embed, it's been really frustrating because even though he's had a couple shooters, you know, Seth Curry now with Brooklyn, they've tried to put shooters around him. That's really what every team is trying to figure out a way to do. Like how do we use our star and then space everybody out and have as much shootings as we possibly can that still holds up defensively. With Hardin, you actually have someone that not only
Starting point is 00:45:40 can dominate the basketball, but also get through the basketball. His passing is actually really incredible. I mean, the different stuff that he's done over the course of the years has always been really impressive. I always felt like Embed, a lot of times it felt like it was just a chore to get him the basketball in right spot. So I think that part with Hardin will work. I do wonder, though, the downside for Embed with this is that he's in a tight MVP race, whether it's Yokic or DeRosen, making this push now that's been pretty consistent push all season long and all the other players that we've mentioned. I just wonder because Hardin's usage, his shots, like he's going to get a lot of these shots. I just wonder how much that's going to impact Embed's overall statistics as he's kind
Starting point is 00:46:19 coming down to the last less than 30 games here to try to win an MVP. I want to talk a little NFL with you. We're talking to Ryan Rissillo of the Ringer, the Ryan Rissolo podcast. So we talked about at the beginning of the show, the Jimmy Garoppolo conversation and Montana and Steve Young and after coming out saying that Tray Lance isn't ready, which I believe, because I don't know what the benefit of the Niners putting out that Tray Lance isn't ready. But I also don't think that there's any way that they keep Jimmy Garapolo and that they shouldn't be surprised what the market is for Jimmy Garapolo. What do you think of the Jimmy Garapolo traleance situation? You know, for all the years that we spent debating Garapolo, and I, you know, look, I'm from the New
Starting point is 00:46:58 England area, so I probably watched it a little bit closer when he came in. I kept hearing like, oh, Jimmy Garoppolo, Jimmy Garoppolo. And even when he, you know, he, he won. a few games and his record was pretty good even to the start of San Francisco. I was just like, I'm not sure. And then when a team moves the draft capital that the Niners moved, even despite playing in a Super Bowl, which by the way, can happen. Like a quarterback who you don't think is the answer for your franchise for the next decade, like you can still get to a Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:47:20 It does happen. It's just a lot better when you have one of those elite guys. And Gropolo is certainly not that. You could even argue that he improved this season. But when the team themselves spends this much draft capital to go up and draft a Tray Lance, who had played one college game in that last weird season that we had, that kind of tells you that whatever debate we have about Garapolo and being the answer, the team just told us that he isn't by going ahead and doing this. So I still think there's probably enough of a
Starting point is 00:47:46 market out there, especially if Roger stays or Wilson stays or whatever happens to the other six or seven quarterbacks we've been talking about it for a year. If none of them really move, then I think Oropolo becomes a more attractive asset. On the Lance part of it, that's fine. You want to tell me he needs to sit that first year? Okay. but there's a lot of times in life where you have to take on a job that you're maybe not ready for and I've never quite understood this fascination with just constantly sitting people, especially when you drafted him this high and then not playing him. There comes a point where the watching can be beneficial and then it can be, I believe, overdone.
Starting point is 00:48:20 And then at that point it's like, okay, now you're holding up the development of actually getting out there and playing in real games and getting all the reps during practice. So I would be all in on them playing Lance now, even if they don't. feel like he's entirely ready because I think you get past a point of no return. We're like, okay, now you're actually hurting his development by never having him play and feel like he's the number one guy. Ryan, I know you're an avid watcher of the herd and a very close friend of Colin Cowherd. But I've been saying this forever.
Starting point is 00:48:48 So thank you for validating what I say all the time. It drives me insane. I don't get this obsession with Patrick Mahomes, no Aaron Rogers did it. The league is different now. You have to find out what you have in your young quarterback. as soon as possible. Because if they are good, then you need to load up around them and try and make a Super Bowl push before you have to pay them.
Starting point is 00:49:09 And if they're not good, you can move off of them quickly, i.e. Josh Rosen and Kyler Murray and move in a different direction. But you can't do that if you're not evaluating it. I gave the Niners grace in this situation because they had Jimmy Garoppolo and because Trey Lance was in a uniquely very raw space because of COVID. But this year, absolutely you have to play him. You have to play him. Aside from the draft picks, the three first rounders and the third rounder that you gave up to get him, what are you waiting for?
Starting point is 00:49:40 Yeah, that's my point. And you're kind of burning those early years really incredibly affordable and all the cast space you can spend elsewhere. You know, I've heard different Mahomes discussions about what he was ready for and what he wasn't ready for. And that basically out of Texas Tech, they had it kind of like reprogram as a quarterback. But it's just still hard for me to figure, like looking at him these last few years, realizing he's been on a path. I know people are dissing him a little bit right now, which is ridiculous, by the way, in Mahomes. But, you know, he's on a path to be one of the all-time grades. I still think he would have figured it out had he not played behind Alex Smith.
Starting point is 00:50:10 So people use that as an example. And maybe they're right on that one. The Rogers one, I don't ever want to hear. The only reason Rogers sat that long is Farr would retire and unretire every season. Okay. So that's not like this whole idea. Like, granted, I worked next to Danny Cannell for years and I always joked him. Like, you're the only pro athlete that I've ever met that was cool about playing.
Starting point is 00:50:29 because we'd argue about this and he'd say, now, man, I'd be good just to hang out and not get in. I'm like, well, that's because you still wanted the NFL checks, which he admitted to, by the way. So it's like I'm calling him out. But none of these guys actually want to sit this long. And the Rogers example is such a rarity. I don't know why anyone ever uses it as a template for that's exactly how all these guys
Starting point is 00:50:48 become successful because there's a lot of really good quarterbacks that did play right away. And you might as well make your mistakes, get it over with and have at least that learning season because if Lance doesn't play this year, Joy, then what do we do? Like the third year in, still have no idea. I completely and wholeheartedly agree.
Starting point is 00:51:04 Ryan, you've been excellent. Thank you. I like when we agree on it on almost everything. That was perfect because I completely agree. Thanks for jumping on with me, Ryan. Have a great day. All right. Thanks, Joy.
Starting point is 00:51:13 Make sure you check out Ryan's podcast, the Ryan Rosillo podcast on The Ringer. In for Colin Cowherd today. He is enjoying some vacation time, well-earned, very long football season. So he is off today. We'll be back on Monday. So I'm here along with.
Starting point is 00:51:29 Ryan Music in the booth. And we have a lot more still to get to. We'll talk to Emmanuel Ocho here in studio later in the show. Got to talk about the Lakers and my thoughts about what's going on with them and the chaos and leaks that are happening and why I think that's going on. Also, of course, what is Aaron Rogers going to do? And this new report that he wants to be the highest paid player in the NFL. We'll discuss that next on the herd.
