Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith ruling. of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the Heard at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeart radio app by searching Heard.
Starting point is 00:01:51 Fox Sports Radio. Here we go. Hour number two in a Monday. Good to have you in. It's the heard in LA Live, wherever you may be and however you may be listening. Peter King's around the corner. So J. Mack is hovering. I don't want my phone near me. It'll distract me. But he's got his phone, all dialed up for Aaron Rogers, Jets, Packers. Sounds like Jimmy G. is talking to a couple teams. The Jets not one of them. So we could see some Domino's fall if Rogers makes a decision here in the coming hour or minutes. A couple of other minor moves happening, we'll get to here in about 30 minutes. But everybody wants to know Rodgers.
Starting point is 00:02:42 If you went with Jimmy Garapolo, that doesn't make a ton of sense. Either go get a quarterback you want or be bad and get a quarterback next year. But why be pretty good with Jimmy Garapolo? You would need to be really bad to get a good quarterback next year. And the Jets were almost a playoff team this year. Like they were in the mix until like week 17.
Starting point is 00:03:03 I don't think they can plummet to bad. I'm talking Texans. If I'm the Texans, Why bring in Garoppel? Either I'm going to get a guy this year or just pass on him be bad again. And then because there's two A plus plus prospects next year. There's not one this year. It's weird that teams don't like that strategy of let's punt on a quarterback now and let's just play it out and then go for next year. Build the roster around him and then put the quarterback in. Why don't they like that? It doesn't make sense. All right, Colin Wright, Colin wrong in a Monday. Plenty of both. Here we go.
Starting point is 00:03:32 Where Colin was right. I have said if I was the Packers, I would rip the band. hand aid off with Aaron Rogers. And Mark Murphy this weekend talked a lot of past tense. We wanted to help Aaron Rogers. I think they've come to terms that they want Jordan love to play. Now, Aaron could decide to come back, which again, I can think two things. If I was Aaron, I'd go to the Packers. If I was the Packers, I'd rip the Band-Aid off. But it looks like it's run its course. A lot of people are speculating that Green Bay wants to get rid of Aaron Rogers. That's something I've been saying for weeks, I understand it.
Starting point is 00:04:07 It's, listen, it's a commitment thing. With Jordan Love, you're going to have him off-season OTAs at your disposal. And with Aaron, he's kind of doing sometimes his own thing. Where Colin was wrong. Well, I thought the Bears should trade down. I didn't think they'd get that haul for this quarterback draft class. In fact, I predicted they would make multiple moves to get three or four picks. for them without an A-plus-plus prospect to get a first two seconds and DJ Moore, that's fantastic.
Starting point is 00:04:41 They have solved their wide receiver talent issue. They can concentrate now with a lot of picks to rebuild that defense. I did not think Chicago would get this much for Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud. Way to go. Where Colin was right. Well, I've been predicting for several weeks. J. Mack is my witness. the Rams were going to move off Jalen Ramsey.
Starting point is 00:05:03 I've been told they like him. He's talented, but he's not a core piece. I thought they could get a second and a starter. They end up getting a third and a backup tight end. But the bottom line is he's very expensive for the next two years, and he comes off a so-so season. And the truth is, you can win at the highest level in the NFL without great, consistent cornerback play.
Starting point is 00:05:27 You can't win if you got a bad offensive line, and the Rams currently do. so they're going to solve that side of the football, let Jalen Ramsey go. Where Colin was wrong. I loved KD to the Sons so much, and he's already hurt, and he's out for the regular season. He got hurt in the layup line. Brutal. And I really like KD.
Starting point is 00:05:49 But, I mean, the fact that injury knocks him out for the regular season, all the critics of this deal that said he's old and falling apart, look right. Worst case scenario. Hurt, early, out for the regular season where you build chemistry. Because that's what you want to do now. You want to build chemistry. Now he goes into the playoffs, hopefully fingers crossed, having not played much with the guys. Where Colin was right. Odell Beckham reported he looking for a $20 million a year contract.
Starting point is 00:06:22 Wow. I said this. When he did that show with LeBron, James, and Maverick Carter, I said he sees. himself as an NBA player, but the NBA doesn't have as hard a cap as the NFL does. He's not a $20 million wide receiver. He was out all last year because of injuries. He's hurt all the time. No franchise is going to see him as a number one. He's got number one talent, but he's not a number one receiver. And college football now consistently gives us 15 to 18 really good wide receivers annually. So I think he is just, I think he lacks a little bit of self-revelling.
Starting point is 00:06:58 awareness here at $20 million a year, he sees himself almost like an NBA player, and those contracts for brittle aging players do not exist. Where Colin was wrong. I've been saying I don't trust the Sixers, but they are 33 and 10 since December. James Hardens, like, reinvented himself, leads the NBA in assists. M. B. leads the NBA in scoring, and they're a number three seed, and they're not that many games out of being the number one seed. I just, my, My question is, oh, was James Harden in the postseason, M.B.T.'s health. But James Hardin deserves credit. From a very ball-centric score to now a more...
Starting point is 00:07:40 And we saw this a little bit in Brooklyn. He's become a much more willing distributor of the basketball, leads the NBA and assists. So right now I'm wrong. Where Colin was right? There are reports that the Carolina Panthers would prefer C.J. Stroud, the quarterback. This is what's interesting. I said when C.J. Stroud against Georgia showed running ability,
Starting point is 00:08:04 it reminded me so much of Justin Herbert at Oregon against Wisconsin in the bowl game. I watch Ohio State play six, seven times a year. I didn't know he was that mobile. And to be that mobile against Georgia, he's a lot like Herbert. He's big. He's apparently mobile. He is quiet, sort of personally reserved. He's accurate.
Starting point is 00:08:26 He played at a big time school. He's productive. So we could be sleeping on C.J. Stroud. Are we picking them apart because Ohio State's never had a great NFL quarterback? There's some Herbert vibes here for me and C.J. Stroud. Where Colin was wrong. I don't really buy the Sacramento Kings, but I will say. I think they're a better story than a team.
Starting point is 00:08:50 But they're going to be the number two seed in the West. They're number one in the NBA in scoring. And DeMonte Sabonis is. leading the NBA in double doubles. Deerrin Fox is giving you 25 a night. They're one of the more talented teams. They don't have any playoff history. But I thought this team was, you know, it was a fun, flashy, offensive team.
Starting point is 00:09:11 But eventually they'll kind of meet their ceiling. But I will say this, for young teams that don't have a ring, those regular season games, those weekend games, those TV games, they become a big deal. And Sacramento right now is getting the last. laugh. They're playing really, really well. We've had Deeran Fox on the show, good guy. Peter King's
Starting point is 00:09:32 around the corner. So J. Mack, what's the latest? What is the latest? Can I give you something from the weekend about this Bears trade? That's interesting. So people like Bryce Young. People like C.J. Stroud. Do you give up
Starting point is 00:09:48 a haul that the Panthers just did for somebody you'd like? Nope. Or do you give it up for someone with massive upside? Right. Who could potentially be, oh my gosh, could he be Mahomes if he works out? He's crushed the combine. He's got a massive arm. No, I thought, is the guy Anthony Richardson. Does Frank Wright think I'm such an offensive guy? Yeah, but why would you give me this? Okay. Why move to number one for Anthony to ensure you get the quarterback with the highest upside by a mile? I don't think you trade up for a small
Starting point is 00:10:18 quarterback like Bryce Young. And C.J. Stroud like is okay, but he might be the number two quarterback. He might have fallen. I think. some people believe that Anthony Richardson is the guy they traded up for. Because that's the only quarterback that makes sense that you would trade up. I mean, they gave up, I thought they overpaid personally. But you don't overpaid for Bryce Young? Well, I don't have a problem with the draft picks. When you added, think about this, you add a star receiver.
Starting point is 00:10:44 So if you do draft a quarterback in your Carolina, you bring him in and you gave away your best receiver. So then you're Justin Fields, where you like him, but he got nobody to throw to. So to me, I would have given you, I mean, I would have given you maybe an edge rusher, but I wouldn't have given you DJ Moore. If I'm drafting a quarterback, I'm not giving you the best. So McCaffrey's gone. DJ Moore's gone.
Starting point is 00:11:08 So you're going to draft a quarterback and give him, and the O line is okay. They had a couple of running backs who filled in for McCaffrey admirably. You know, they had a good season. But I don't love Anthony Richardson going one, but I know the betting market says Stroud right now. But remember, the betting market said Aden Hutchinson last March was like minus 350 to go number one. He did not go number one. I think the guy to keep an eye on is Anthony Richardson, which sounds crazy to me, but he really did blow people away at the combine.
Starting point is 00:11:37 He's smart. Apparently at the whiteboard, he's dominating. We know he can run the 40. No, he's got heat from physically, there's some Cam Newton stuff where he's just bigger and stronger than linebackers and runs past and over people. I get all that stuff. I do think I watched him twice where I sat down. And, you know, because everybody started talking about him, maybe coming out. And I thought the accuracy stuff was obvious.
Starting point is 00:11:58 Some simple throws were really difficult. Is that correctable? It was correctable for Josh Allen. That's right. With a guy like Brian Dable. Is it correctable under Frank Reich who has been, I don't know, quite quarterback whisper? But he's been very good. No, I mean, Philip Rivers, Andrew Locke, and Carson Wends all got significantly more efficient.
Starting point is 00:12:17 And so that's the Anthony Richards issue. It's not athleticism. It's going to get more efficient. And so if Frank Reich says, let me go look at him at the combine, let me go look at his throwing motion. And Frank goes, yeah, it's Josh Allen. Well, then it's the right move. Yeah, I mean, here's the thing with Anthony Richardson. He's raw, but physically, none of these other guys are close.
Starting point is 00:12:36 Like, not close. Oh, it's night and day. Now, Levis is probably the closest in terms of physically, but a lot of questions. He's very ripped. He's a little bit stiff as an athlete, had somebody tell me that. A little stiff. name the great quarterbacks in your lifetime
Starting point is 00:12:53 that were ripped. And I mean like gun show. That's just not a position you need to be right. No, because you want to be fluid. You want to be fluid. You don't want to be ripped. Able to escape those 270-pound Eddrusters coming at you.
Starting point is 00:13:05 Yeah, yeah. It's interesting. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the iHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Starting point is 00:13:22 Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. Starting point is 00:13:46 A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you'll say. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated.
Starting point is 00:14:16 One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment. and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast, it's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So, if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Listen to The Clifford Show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
Starting point is 00:14:56 I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because.
Starting point is 00:15:17 of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:15:37 Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your So an interesting move just happened. Sean Payton coach of the Broncos went out and just free agent signed Jared Stidham the Raiders quarterback. It feels like a chess move because they're already paying a fortune for Russell Wilson.
Starting point is 00:16:05 Why pay for Jared Stidham? I'll just throw this out because now the Raiders have to overpay for Jimmy Garoppolo, who gets hurt a lot. The quarterback market drying up. So now the Raiders in the same division with Denver have to probably overspend for Jimmy Garapolo who the Texans want. And also the Jets may go after if Aaron decides to be a packer. It's a little bit of a chess move. They don't plan on playing Jarrett Stidem, I would guess, unless they've seen something that deeply troubles them about Russell Wilson. But to go spend more money at quarterback feels to me like a chess move. Now the Raiders have to overspend for the often injured Jimmy Garoppolo.
Starting point is 00:16:48 Really interesting. Peter King, Football Morning in America, NBCSports.com. That is a fascinating. I don't know if they need Jared Stidham. But you know what, Peter, so much of this, I learned this watching Belichick and all those years I lived in the Northeast, there's a lot of chess moves in this league. What's your initial reaction to Jarrett Stidham, more money at quarterback for the Broncos. That is a shocking development. There's no other word for it.
Starting point is 00:17:20 It's a shocking development. The Raiders wanted to keep Jared Stidham. There is no question about that. And Sean Peyton went in and trumped the Raiders. I'm a little bit surprised at Stidham actually doing that, even if it's for a little bit more money. And the reason is that he was going to be able to play most likely with the Raiders at least early. There's no guarantee the Raiders were going to get Jimmy Garoppolo, none whatsoever.
Starting point is 00:18:02 There are going to be multiple teams in on Jimmy Garoppolo. Yeah. So, I mean, that's one part. But, Colin, the reason that it really does shock me is that I think if you're Sean Payton, what you want to do is you want to tell Russell Wilson, Russell, we are all in with you, all in. And what this says is, Russell, we're hedging our bets with you. We're hedging our bets. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:33 So the Aaron Rogers Green Bay situation, multiple reports, there's a framework done. I offered this, Peter. I've left companies before. Generally, the new company has to provide something the old company didn't. Aaron's not going to New York for money. He's not going for a better coach. He's not going for fame. He mostly hides in the off-season.
Starting point is 00:18:57 He's not going for respect. He's respected by everybody in Green Bay. What do the Jets provide? Better offensive line? No. Easier division? No. Easier conference?
Starting point is 00:19:07 No. if you were going to leave a company, somebody's providing something, a company's not. I don't know what the Jets are providing. It's an offensive league. They've got a defensive coach on the hot seat. Is he going to go to the Jets? What do they provide? My gut feeling is that he will go to the Jets.
Starting point is 00:19:28 And if he wants to go anywhere, it probably is the Jets. Here's the thing, Colin. You can tell. when Adam Schaefter a month ago said there's a good chance Aaron Rogers is going to be traded. Now, I don't know that Aaron Rogers at that moment in time knew exactly what was going, you know, what was going on. But the point is, Colin, that he knows that it's over in Green Bay. So if he really does want to play somewhere where he's welcome, and where he's going to be a partner and all that,
Starting point is 00:20:10 he's got to leave Green Bay. So now you tell me where's the best place for Aaron Rogers to go. There aren't many places who want a 35-year-old quarterback who can be hard to deal with and who has either one or two years left most likely. I mean, name the teams. and by the way, who's going to have to pay him $59 million this year and compensate Green Bay with something fairly significant.
Starting point is 00:20:44 I mean, Colin, it's like when people try to oversimplify Lamar Jackson and say, oh, my God, he's an MVP, he's only 26 years old. Why aren't their teams out the door waiting for him? It's because Lamar Jackson would cost a lot in compensation. and in the last two years he's missed 34% of the snaps due to injury. It's not hard to figure out. And same way, it's not hard to figure out that there's not teams lined up at the Green Bay window to take Aaron Rogers off their hands.
Starting point is 00:21:19 I was shocked. I'm not shocked very much, but I was shocked that in a quarterback class that we don't really have a slam dunk, that the Bears got a first two seconds and essentially DJ Moore solves their receiver issue. Now they've got Mooney, Claypool, Cole Comett, DJ Moore. He's a terrific receiver, Peter,
Starting point is 00:21:42 who gets you 1,000 yards a year in Carolina with Kyle Allen, Donald, and Baker. So it's like they can now, the receiving room, it's grownups. It's really productive players. How surprised were you? When I saw DJ Moore and the picks, I get if it was Caleb Williams at USC,
Starting point is 00:21:59 who everybody thinks is a slam dunk. I was blown. I thought it was a haul. That was how it landed for me. What about you? Well, nine days ago, I sat with Ryan Poles, and he told me about everything that pretty much is going on. Two or three times in a conversation that lasted about 50 minutes.
Starting point is 00:22:25 He talked about the contingency of how the, trade could change if there were a significant player involved. And I found out this weekend, Colin, that for a long time since they've been talking to Carolina, that polls said there will be no trade without DJ Moore in it. So the Panthers want to solve their quarterback problem forever. Okay. and the only way that they thought they could do that is by making a trade for this pick now,
Starting point is 00:23:01 even though I don't believe that they are solid on who exactly they want right now. Wow. Finally, you know, Sean McVeigh has threatened retirement twice. The first time got him a new contract. This time, I think, got him more say in personnel. So they've moved off Floyd, Bobby Wagner,
Starting point is 00:23:23 Jalen Ramsey. And I, and I, you know what it feels like to me, Peter? Is that he looks at Zach Taylor and all those offensive weapons and Shanahan's offensive weapons. And Mike McDaniel's offensive weapons. He's like, hey, I want a Super Bowl. And we were 15th in defense. You got to give me some weapons on the offensive side. And I think Sean has used that sort of I'm going to retire thing.
Starting point is 00:23:44 I'm not blaming them. I think it's leverage. Everybody, when you have it, use it. But it looks like to me, they're going to really move toward the, they're going to the opposite of the Steelers. Their money's going to be on offense. If McBae's going to be the head coach, that's what it feels like to me, that it was a cash dump to free up stuff for offense. How did it land for you? I think there's a couple of points to be made. Number one, the Rams aren't the Rams of two years ago anymore. Those days are over. Colin, right now they've got 11 picks in this draft,
Starting point is 00:24:20 and I believe that you're going to see right now. I think the Rams are going to make another trade to try to even multiply that second round pick that they have the 36 overall and get two or three picks out of that one. There's a very simple reason. There's an old philosophy. Jimmy Johnson had it. He said, I want maximum picks every year. And he always said, I'm no smarter than anybody else when it comes to drafting guys.
Starting point is 00:24:54 I'm going to make mistakes just like everybody else will. I want more picks so I can make mistakes. So if I hit on half of them, I've got more chances to be right. And that's what I think less need is doing. I think you're going to see them do it next year as well. And the other thing, Colin, cost efficiency, control, of costs. They want to get a bunch of Ernest
Starting point is 00:25:22 Joneses, a bunch of Nick Scots. They want to get a bunch of those guys. And so that is what this is all about. They don't want Jalen Ramsey. He doesn't do them any good right now. This is a team that's not going to be good probably for
Starting point is 00:25:37 another couple of years. They need building blocks. And that's what every move they're going to make in the next few weeks is about. By the way, I like Lamar Jackson. I'd sign him. He wins 75% of his games. I think he's a more accurate thrower of the football than he gets credit for. Again, I'd sign him. And nobody wants to pick on a parent, but I do believe it's fair to say lack of an agent has not helped him. When all these teams came out and said pass on
Starting point is 00:26:05 Lamar Jackson, you wouldn't do that if you had a bona fide big time agent because you don't want to offend agents because they have a bunch of players and you may want some. How is it falling for you on Lamar Jackson. Again, he's a dynamic player that wins in a tough division and a tough conference, 76% of his games. I don't think I can move off that. Connie, all your years... I don't think the Ravens want to... I don't think the Ravens want to move off it, Colin.
Starting point is 00:26:32 The only problem is Lamar Jackson has started one of... Started and finished. One of 12 December and January games in the last two years. So at the time when the games are biggest, he's been hurt two years in a row. Now, I'm not saying that he's injury prone. I don't mean that. But he is a guy who runs more than 10 times a game on average in his career. So if you're going to run, get out of the pocket, get into the open field 10 times a game.
Starting point is 00:27:11 And you're going to get hit in the pocket anyway when you stay back there. sometimes. The point is very, very simple that you can't do an irresponsible contract. You can't do a real long-term contract and guarantee it all. If he's not going to stay standing, I just don't think it's a smart contract for anybody to do. Yeah. Peter King, NBCSports.com, Hall of Fame voters since the early 90s, covered it since the early 80s. Good seeing you, Peter. Thank you, Colin. Take care. Boy, the Aaron Roger stuff. You should watch, if you could host this show, J-MAC over there is twitching.
Starting point is 00:27:52 He's got his ticks. He's just, he's all beside himself. J-Mack with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. I twitched because Peter King said, The Rams, this is a team that's not going to be good for a few years.
Starting point is 00:28:08 Did you hear that? I was like, a few years. Well, I think they have 11 pick. They don't have a first. but I think they've got a couple thirds, a bunch of fifths, a bunch of six, a bunch of sevenths. You can, you know, in this league, you can get depth and starters all over the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh round. Think about this. Half the NFL players are undrafted.
Starting point is 00:28:28 Now, think about that. In the NBA, a majority of the star players are top 18 picks in the first round. So what does that tell you? Is that in the NFL, it's just not size. Right? If it was just size, first round guys would always make it. You take the big strongest athletes. why is half the league undrafted?
Starting point is 00:28:46 Because you find guys that are more coachable, work harder, functional football intelligence, versatile. It's just not a big, strong, tough guy. In the NBA, a second round great player like Yokic is a once-in-a-franchise moment. There aren't as many late bloomers in the NBA. You can identify the talent early. It's 14 years old. In the NFL, there's late bloomers.
Starting point is 00:29:10 Some guys, to build a great football team. I mean, you go look at the Niners. George Kittle was a fifth round. Jennings is a sixth round. Brock Purdy is seventh rounder. Elijah Mitchell is six-rounder. And that's a powerful offense. Some of their defensive early picks have missed,
Starting point is 00:29:25 so they just made up for minutes ago with a massive signing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right, let's start with the Carolina Panthers. You just talked about this. Traded with the Bears to secure the first pick desperately, desperately. Desperately, Panthers need a quarterback. Frank Reich said the team will enter the next few weeks to decide who they want.
Starting point is 00:29:40 And a text message to Albert Breer. Here's what Frank Reich said. excited about this group of young quarterbacks. We think they all have strengths that make them unique and worthy of the number one pick. We have a little over a month to confirm which is the right one for our team. Now, remember when the Niners traded up, Colin, and everybody thought it was for Mack Jones. And they pulled an audible late and went Trey Lance. Let's be real.
Starting point is 00:30:07 Nobody has any clue who the Panthers are taking. All these people betting on CJ Stroud, that's fun and nice. if you were asking me today where my money is, I think it's Anthony Richardson. I don't think you trade up for CJ Straub. He is even more physically gifted than Cam was coming out of college. And Cam was one of the best college players for a season I've ever seen. So he is just big, strong, vertical moves. And also, when you get these quarterbacks who are, like when Cam came into the league,
Starting point is 00:30:34 he was so unique, it was hard to prepare for Cam. Because he was such a unicorn. He played so differently. So you don't have anybody on your scout. team like Anthony Richardson. So at least for a year, it's like the wildcat worked for like a year and a half. So Anthony Richardson is going to come here at six four and a half, 260, can run a four for wherever he runs.
Starting point is 00:30:53 They're going to be wildly entertaining. And my take is Frank Reich is going to have a lot of power here. And Reich, I thought it was a mistake by the Colts. Reich has taken Andrew Luck, who threw a lot of picks, Carson Wentz, who threw a lot of picks, Philip Rivers through a lot of picks. Those were quarterbacks that had efficiency issues, not talent, and he made them significantly more efficient. Carson Wentz, who's done 27 touchdown seven picks with Frank Reich.
Starting point is 00:31:25 So he looks at Richardson and says, I've seen this. It's called Josh Allen. It's called Carson Wentz, big strong kid who throws picks and makes, you know, accuracy issue. So I think you're on to something. And remember, the owner of the Panthers hedge fund guy, Teper, You know those hedge fund guys. I know you know many of them. They like the big bets, big risky bets.
Starting point is 00:31:45 Yep. And they usually pay off for those billionaires. All right, next up, the Rams. Remember McVeigh nearly left? Cowherty was talking about taking an announcing job. A lot of rumors about that. He decided to stay with the Rams, and he gave more insight recently
Starting point is 00:31:59 into why he stuck with the Rams. But to say that as a competitor, that that's something that I would have felt comfortable walking away with. No, I would not have felt comfortable walking away. from a situation where I think I owed more to the people than that. You know, I'd like to think that, you know, without having to talk about it, different things like that, when you're making a commitment, you're saying, hey, I'm committed to being the best coach that I can possibly be,
Starting point is 00:32:26 not just for this next year, but for a handful. You know, you don't ever want to sit here and act like you can predict the future, but it's not something that I'm looking at as a short-term type of decision. Yeah, I think he's going. I think he's going to be around. I think he's getting very frustrated losing to his rival Kyle Shanahan. The good news is he's got the ring and Kyle doesn't. And I think Kyle would trade the ring for division wins.
Starting point is 00:32:54 Yeah, all these people are like all the Rams. Remember when the GM said, forget those picks or, you know, the bad one of those picks. Wish he had them now. He got a title. People forget that. You win a Super Bowl. You know how many franchises would kill for a Super Bowl? If you told Kyle Shanahan, who's dominated McVeigh in games, would you take the ring?
Starting point is 00:33:11 one second. So, listen, they went all in. Remember, the Rams were brand new to L.A. You got the Dodgers winning their division. Lakers huge brand, Clippers for real. You got Lincoln Riley at USC. The Rams are like, listen. And he had a cost overrun in the stadium of like $4 billion.
Starting point is 00:33:31 In a wildly distracted city. And the Rams said, we're going to go all in. We know we're going to have some issues financially. I don't think they regret it for a second. I think because of the offensive line injuries, which were insane last year, it got worse. But their line wasn't even good at the beginning of the season. Remember the season opener wasn't Stafford's act like six or seven times? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:54 You could just tell. It got uglier than they thought it would. But in the end, it's Los Angeles. I mean, look at the history of the Philadelphia Eagles. Super Bowl appearance, bad. Super Bowl appearance. I mean, these big city teams, they take big swings. I support it.
Starting point is 00:34:11 All right, we're going to do a quick catch-all to wrap up. A lot of signings that have happened. So we briefly touched on the Austin Echler requesting permission to seek a trade with the Chargers. That feels significant for a Chargers offense that has had issues. Eagles linebacker T.J. Edwards, undrafted out of Wisconsin, he was awesome tackling machine. Just signed with the Bears for a year deal. Bears are spending. Jason Kelsey, one of your guys, just announced he will return for the 20-23 season for the Eagles.
Starting point is 00:34:38 Big. So he's not going to just quit the NFL and be a podcaster full time. No, that's a big move. That's huge for the locker room. Now, the bad news is in the last like seven minutes, Javon Hargrave has left the Eagles to go to the 49ers, an $84 million deal, four years. So a defensive tackle in the middle of that Eagles defense goes to the Niners. So they're going to have to move off some people.
Starting point is 00:35:01 Well, it probably means they're not going after Tom Brady. I saw a story this morning, Niners for Lamar Jackson. That's off the table. Niners, I think you can kiss the Brady stuff goodbye, kiss Lamar. Okay. but are they going to move off like an armstead? I don't think so. Basically, they got run over in the NFC title game, right?
Starting point is 00:35:17 And they just said, let's get that guy who we could use to stop the run in the defensive line. So the Eagles now, in the span of like an hour, have lost their top tackler linebacker, their defensive tackle, and all of their cornerbacks are free agents talking to people. So Eagles. We knew this. We talked about this. Lost the Super Bowl. They're looking at maybe losing five or six defensive starters as well as defensive coordinator and offensive coordinator.
Starting point is 00:35:40 Good Lord. That's a significant loss to overcome. The Niners, right now this minute, are so far ahead of the rest of the NFC in sheer roster talent. Who's your quarterback week one? Okay. By week three, it's Purdy or Lance, whoever it is. We hope. I would agree with you, yes.
Starting point is 00:36:00 But a lot of questions. It feels like a year where there's going to be somebody coming out of nowhere to represent the NFL. But I'm just talking in terms of roster talent, NFC, The Eagles this morning defensively are not the same team. No. I would have, yeah. Also, they got to pay Jalen Hertz, remember. You know, you want to give Jailen Hertz 45 mil. You're going to be losing some guys on defense.
Starting point is 00:36:22 I don't know. Niners don't have a quarterback. When can we start talking about the Detroit Lions? Are they winning the NFC next year? I don't know if the Niners are going to win a Super Bowl, but that roster stacked. Yeah, you just put double-digit wins in. That's an insane roster now.
Starting point is 00:36:36 A full season with McCaffrey, Debo, Kittle. They're loaded if the quarterback pans out. J-MAC with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lye News. The Brady-Lamar stuff,
Starting point is 00:36:52 I mean, you're going to keep paying all these defensive pieces. You've got to pay your quarterback nothing. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays at noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, I'm Doug Gottlie. The podcast is called All Ball. Starting point is 00:37:41 Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Starting point is 00:39:18 Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because,
Starting point is 00:39:36 of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:39:56 Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your Okay, we got all sorts of moves happening. Sean Payton is not resting on his laurels. The Denver Broncos have signed Mike McGlinchie. He was the Niners right tackle.
Starting point is 00:40:17 Very good at the end of the year. They're paying a lot of people in San Francisco, so they can't pay everybody, so they'll go out and draft the tackle. Mike McGlinchie comes over. The O-line, left tackle is pretty good for Denver. He got hurt, Bulls. So now they have two more than capable.
Starting point is 00:40:34 They have one guard they like. they have two tackles they like, and they've got Jared Stidham from the Raiders. I think that's a chess move forcing the Raiders now to overpay for Jimmy Garoppolo, who the Texans want. So they're going to get into a bidding war for Jimmy Garoppolo. So it's a chess move. They got Jarrett Stidham out of the Raiders. That's what it feels like to me, because he doesn't even play the same style as Russell Wilson.
Starting point is 00:41:03 They don't have a similar aesthetic or style. So Stidim's a big guy, pocket guy, Russell, smaller guy, move around guy. So that feels like a little bit of a chess move. But I like McGlinchy is a real solid right tackle. So first thing Sean Payton wants to do is get that O line cleaned up. The Broncos are also reportedly, they are shopping all their wide receivers, including Cortland Sutton, who's a terrific receiver. receiver. So Denver, Denver's taking phone calls and not a shock. Sean Payton is very busy so far.
Starting point is 00:41:41 Agreed, Colin. And now according to NFL network, at this moment, the Raiders are closing in on a deal with Jimmy Garoppolo. There you go. So this is what we said. Once Stenham signed, it forces the Raiders to have to make a move on Jimmy Garoppolo. And they had to. So listen, Garapolo is a winner. He's good in the locker room. I will say this about the Raiders. I love their offensive pieces. Find me another team in the NFL, another team that has a star back, a star sideline receiver, a star slot receiver, a excellent left tackle, and a star tied end. Kansas City doesn't. Kansas City does not have that good weapons.
Starting point is 00:42:26 They don't have a star veteran back and a star sideline receiver. They have a star tied end and guys in the slot. So the Raider, Garoppolo hit the lottery. He got Belichick. Then he gets the Niners Kyle Shanahan. And now Garapolo, it's the good looks, the lucky charm. Now he gets an absolutely gifted offensive personnel group. Raiders are stacked offensively.
Starting point is 00:42:52 I do wonder he went from being, there was a moment last year. He was the best quarterback in his division. Kyla Marie had gotten hurt. Do you know what he is? Matt Stafford was hurt. Jimmy, one of the best quarterbacks in the NFC. right when healthy. Now he goes to the AFC. Rank the quarterbacks
Starting point is 00:43:07 in the AFC Westford. Well, it's different. It's a different ball game. Very different. The Raiders are sitting there thinking, Josh McDaniel's like, I've got to win games. And Jared Stidham's not a starter. But this, we just said it five minutes ago. This really forced the Raiders hand. So now that you you've got to go pay for Jimmy Garoppolo,
Starting point is 00:43:25 which he was already in the running. So and I'm sure the Raiders were willing to pay more than Houston because Houston has the number to pick and Houston can draft a quarterback, the Raiders don't. So again, on paper, the Raiders are fascinating. In the new NFL, there are six positions where you've got to be good. You've got to be good at, and Jimmy Garoppolo is more than capable. He may be a B quarterback.
Starting point is 00:43:50 He's more than capable. Quarterback, star receiver, left tackle, edge rusher, and I think it helps to have a good corner or a good running back. and an offensive coach. So you can tell what the Raiders are going to do in the draft. They're going to go heavy defense. They need a corner, another safety, and that's fine. They've got an edge rush.
Starting point is 00:44:10 They need an interior delinement, another corner or two, and a safety. So that gives the Raiders clarity. This is going to be a heavy, heavy defensive draft. Oh, by the way, outside of Max Crosby, Raiders' previous regime butchered a lot of defensive picks. So, listen, clarity. We got our quarterback. and we know what we're doing in the draft,
Starting point is 00:44:31 and we didn't have to give up any picks to get him. Okay, non-quarterback edition, do you want another signing? This is spicy for a team we like going forward. Detroit Lions have signed Steelers' cornerback, Cam Sutton, three years, $33 million. I know it doesn't sound huge. Cam Sutton was very, very good last year in Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 00:44:48 He will slide in opposite Jeff Okuda in Detroit. Now you have to wonder, Colin. There's a lot of talk at the draft. Lions need a cornerback. Do they get the kid Gonzalez from Oregon? I think he's, I think he is. Mike, can't. Right.
Starting point is 00:45:01 The only player in the first, in the top 10 that feels like a can't mess is Christian Gonzalez, the corner for more. And it felt like the Lions were a good landing spot. Now they're off the board with two cornerbacks. You know, Akuta hasn't had a great run. You got to start to wonder, are they thinking quarterback for the future with their first pick in the top 10 to reset that quarterback market with golf? We've talked about this.
Starting point is 00:45:25 Lions continue to be spicy. This team can spend if they get the quarterback on a rookie deal. This is your Jacksonville a year ago. You're really in on Detroit. I think there's something here. And they beat my Jets last year in an awesome performance. It is interesting. Many speculated the Lions could go get the corner from Oregon.
Starting point is 00:45:43 They're now off the market for it. You would think. They don't need another cornerback. You don't want to invest too much there. The defensive line is good. They got a lot of young players last year. Their draft picks were a lot of home runs. Offensive line is great.
Starting point is 00:45:56 I think the Detroit Lions are becoming a sleeper. Especially if we get news, Rogers is gone out of the NFC, right? That's really... Okay, breaking news. Garapolo is a raider. Earlier today, Sean Payton, Denver go arguably overpay for a backup, Jared Stidham,
Starting point is 00:46:13 forcing the Raiders' hands to probably overpay for Garoppolo. I think Garoppel is going to have some success. I mean, remember, Josh McDaniels coached him in New England, so they have a relationship. They were already in discussions. This probably just, they made sure they spent it up got it done.
Starting point is 00:46:30 So I'll tell you, this is where the NFL is great. I can't wait to watch Garoppolo with the Raiders. I'm very interested. He's gone from Belichick to Kyle Shanahan to a stacked offense. I mean, Garoppolo's, he's gotten like the trifect of breaks. And I like him, but sometimes people have a lucky charm. He's had a lot of winning in his career, that's for sure. He got more talent.
Starting point is 00:46:53 He's had more offensive talent than almost anybody in the league over the last eight years. More offensive talent than he has armed. talent, right? That's not a shot. I mean, that's reality. He's not a big time thrower. I think that's totally fair. All right, hour three, baby. It is moving. It's the herd. One more herd.
