Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hard Way with your favorite therapist and host, Kear Games.
Starting point is 00:01:10 This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor it? It signals to the world that you're not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to. Listen to learn the hard way on the AHA radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tontons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1.
Starting point is 00:02:14 Find your local station for the herd at Fox SportsRadio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Heard. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Ah, here we go. It's hour two. Having so much fun. Live in Los Angeles. It's the herd, wherever you may be, however you may be listening.
Starting point is 00:02:36 Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1. You know, years ago, I met this young, energetic, young reporter. His name was Jason McIntyre. And I told him years ago, I said, J. Mack at some point we'll work together. This is true. I was in my home in Connecticut and the driveway on the phone. And I said, you're a grinder and a hustler.
Starting point is 00:02:59 You're a good guy. I once blew up his website. I had some guilt with that. And I said, I'll pay you back. We're going to work together. And now you have come out to the West. And he just told me during the break. He said, he's an East Coast guy.
Starting point is 00:03:10 He said, you know, my friends, they're all like, oh, you live in California. But you said, then they come out and visit. And they're like, holy crap, can I move out here? How do I get out? I know there's a stigma against California nationwide. But when you actually come out here and spend some time, time. The weather, the beach, like, it really, I don't want, don't, don't buy all this. Oh, it's so liberal. That stuff like doesn't exist. I don't see it day to day. Do you? You know what I see?
Starting point is 00:03:35 A corona in front of me in the sun. How about an assaibole? You know, I just, I mean, it's good. I have no idea how my neighbors vote, nor do I care. I don't either. By the way, yesterday was raining like cats and dogs. It was great. I couldn't walk my dog. It was so bad. Oh, it was pouring. You had about three days a year like that in L.A. Yeah, listen, if you watch certain media outlets, you would think, oh, my God, it's crazy out here. I don't know. I live out here and it's sunny out here. How about watching sports in California?
Starting point is 00:04:04 It doesn't get any better than that. The game starts at 10 in the morning, done week. I can literally watch an NFL Sunday and still go out to dinner. It's perfect. That's perfect. So Joel Clatt in about five minutes, I love teaching him about college football. So this is very interesting. right now Tua, quarterback of the dolphins, leads the NFL in on-target throws, number one.
Starting point is 00:04:27 So you feel pretty good about that. He is the most accurate guy when the ball perfectly thrown. He also leads the NFL in uncatchably inaccurate balls. All right. So this is what I predicted. Miami would make the playoffs and they'd get trapped with Tua because the offensive coach is so brilliant, they got running back upgrades, left tackle upgrades, Tyreek Hill. They're 6 and 0 when he starts games this year.
Starting point is 00:04:55 Highest passer rating and Miami is starving for stability. And that last point cannot be dismissed. Denver was so desperate to find the next L way that rational people talk themselves into Tim Tebow was great. desperation creates a loosening of the standards, a lowering of the standards. And Miami has been so dysfunctional for years and so chaotic and had so much instability, they are starving for stability. And they're not the Cleveland Browns of the Lions. The other thing to add to this is when you've had success, Bob Greasy, Don Shula,
Starting point is 00:05:42 Dan Marino, Jimmy Johnson, when you've actually had success, you have historically kind of high standards, and you add in now, you're starving. You start convincing yourself of half-truths. Two is great. No, two is winning. He's not great. That's a half-truth. He's winning, and he's completing a lot of balls 15 yards and under. He is not great.
Starting point is 00:06:10 Mahomes is great. Joe Burrow is great. Brady's been great. Maybe he still is. So I think Miami is now in a very predictable corner. We predicted what Minnesota would do this year when they're close games. We predicted Green Bay would pull back. We predicted Miami would be so profound offensively because Tua is a good distributor of the ball when the play is in front of him that they're a little bit trapped.
Starting point is 00:06:36 You start looking at their schedule. They get a lot of wins on it. Cleveland at home, Houston at home. Green Bay at home, Jets at home, certainly at New England, they've owned Belichick and the Patriots with Tua. So I think it is one of these kind of unique situations where I like Miami. But we said you're going to, the left tackle, the coach, the weapons, they're going to win a bunch of games. And all of a sudden you're going to wake up, it's a little bit like Dak and the Cowboys,
Starting point is 00:07:02 and you're going to have to pay a quarterback above what he is. because pride and desperation always create half-truths and a lowering of standards. And I'm hearing a lot of this. Two is great. No, he's winning. It's not great. That's a half-truth. Our next guest, if he ever tried a half-truth, I would hold him accountable and squeeze the truth out of him.
Starting point is 00:07:26 He is the voice of college football. He is Joel Clatt is joining us in the herd. What's up? What is going on? I'll tell you what I like. I'm here to hold you accountable. Yes, just like polling. I like accuracy in America.
Starting point is 00:07:41 Let's start with this. I tend to, I find that my psychology is I don't like people getting bullied a lot. So I defend people, even sometimes when it's hard to defend, I defend Harbaugh out of the core because he is different, is unique, and he can be unlikable. And so people in the media sometimes aren't fair and harshly and the avalanche. Brian Kelly can be cringy. Had a horrible incident early in Notre Dame. But I think the fact that media people beat up on him,
Starting point is 00:08:10 I was so happy for LSU and Brian Kelly. The question becomes now, because you and I both agree he's going to win an LSU. I think so. I think he's a really good coach. But here's the question that's being asked. Was it maybe a tell on Alabama that Nick entered this conference with a lot of pretenders at coach?
Starting point is 00:08:32 And now you got Kirby. and now you got Lane and now you got Heipel's a star and now you got Brian Kelly. Is it the beginning of Alabama's end? I'm not prepared to say that and I don't think that the
Starting point is 00:08:47 truth of it. I think that's a half truth, Colin. Speaking of half-truths. I like that you are willing to go there. Yeah, let me explain why. It's because Alabama none of us would say that this is one of their better teams, okay? They're not they're certainly not what they
Starting point is 00:09:03 have been at wide receiver and that's affected them. It's affected their ability to run the ball. Although yards per carry, they're doing fine. They don't tend to run the ball enough, I find. I think Bryce Young is still fantastic. I think the biggest issue on their defense is that they don't have that interior defensive lineman. They've got great edge players, but the interior of their defensive line is not what it was. So all of that can be true, but that doesn't mean that there is a demise of the program that's some sort of imminent, imminent, you know, foreshadowing. Think about what it's taken to beat Alabama. No one's played a tougher road schedule than Alabama.
Starting point is 00:09:39 They've gone to Texas. That's 105,000. To Tennessee, 101,000. Two LSU, 103,000. So it's basically an average of 103,000. That's double almost double in NFL stadium. They're one and two in those games. And you're like, man, they've lost two games.
Starting point is 00:09:54 Yeah, think of what it took really good teams to do to beat them. Tennessee is a really good team with a guy. who might win the Heisman trophy. Really good team, talented. They're at home in front of $100,000, and it takes a Bama missed field goal and a make-by- Tennessee a yard over the crossbar and they carry the goalposts
Starting point is 00:10:15 out of the Eland Stadium. You made this point last week. I don't know what the average NFL stadium is. I'd guess like $65,000,000, but college stadiums in the South are over $100. But the difference is it's 19-year-olds. So going on the road in college. It's tough.
Starting point is 00:10:28 It is. You just don't win on the road. You don't win on the road at good places. Prove it with a number. Okay, top 10 matchups this year. There have been seven of them. Road team, 0 and 7. Top 15 matchups this year in college football.
Starting point is 00:10:41 There have been 11 of those games. Road team, one in 10. Only win Ohio State over Penn State. It just doesn't happen. Look at all the best teams in the country. Where is their one loss? Tennessee was at Georgia. Oregon was basically on the road against Georgia in Atlanta.
Starting point is 00:10:57 You look at Alabama on the road, Tennessee and LSU. Tennessee, you know, I mean, all of them, USC, on the road at Utah, Utah, on the road at UCLA, UCLA on the road at Oregon. You look at some of these teams, like the best teams in the country, Clemsons won 38 in a row at home. Oregon's won 23 in a row at home. So let me get back to the point about Alabama is like they didn't have the schedule that they were going to be able to go and dominate unless they had one of their
Starting point is 00:11:23 great teams, which they don't. Okay, so now all of a sudden their last three losses were a really good Tennessee team, a really good LSU team, and Georgia in the national championship. That's far different, let's say, than Clemson. If you want to compare, if we want to talk about these teams, these are the two teams that have dominated the playoff era. Five of the eight national championships have been either Clemson or Alabama during the playoff, right? 41% of the playoff spots have been Clemson or Alabama.
Starting point is 00:11:51 Clemson's last three losses are Notre Dame, a Notre Dame team that lost to Marshall and Stanford at home. And dominated them. A one-dimensional Notre Dame team that throws 115th in the country in passing offense. Pitt and NC State. Isn't that a lot different than LSU, Tennessee, and Georgia in the national championship? I just am not right. Like Alabama's going to be fine. Okay. I don't disagree with you. Okay. You have a trait that's a little annoying. Oh. You often support the little guy. Oh, is that the case?
Starting point is 00:12:21 I am not a fan of that. But I thought you just talked about trying to support the underdog. I don't like when people get bullied. I feel a contradiction. There is a bit of a contradiction. Okay. You always get really serious. soft and a lot of empathy and being a nice guy, a little bit of a do-gooder for me. And so every couple years there's this college team, clat, you put your arms around, Cincinnati or Michigan State. Okay, TCU's not an elite team with elite players. They're going to go, they're going to lose to Texas this weekend, probably.
Starting point is 00:12:52 But the point being is you got them four, the playoff system has them four, because we feel that they've, gosh darn it, they've won games, close over average teams. I'm looking at these teams below them. Tennessee is whacking people and Bama can clobber people and UCLA. You're just doing this because you're a nice guy and you feel it's a good story. You don't think that's the fourth best team in the country. You play to win the games, right? That's the NFL.
Starting point is 00:13:20 It should be the college game as well. Now, you don't think. This notion that we should just throw results out the window. I'm not saying that. Well, yes, you are. I say LSU could be ninth. I mean, they're undefeated. They've got quality wins, much more so than USC.
Starting point is 00:13:44 Well, give me all the TCU quality wins. They beat Kansas State. They beat Oklahoma State. Well, Oklahoma State's a fraud. Kansas State's Kansas State. Well, those are big wins? For my money, you look at TCU and they've earned that spot. I'm much more in the camp that you should be ranked where you deserve to be ranked.
Starting point is 00:14:02 rather than like, hey, you know, what's your roster composition and how have you recruited and are you a blue blood? Like, I just, I don't like, I don't like that at all. I think you should have to roll. If you're a national championship contender, I want to look at your schedule, you better have blown out five to six teams. I mean, rolled them. That's, if you go look at our last 20 national champions, they roll people, not all of them, and they can lose a game. LSU went to a championship with two losses in overtime. Well, Colin, you're trying to, like, are you trying to tell me that I'm suggesting TCU is going to win the national championship. So now you're, I think you're conflating like what we're doing here. If you're
Starting point is 00:14:35 going to put them in the playoffs, if they deserve to be in the playoffs, then they should be in the playoff. Their non-conference schedule included Tarleton State. I mean, I don't even know what that is. I don't really either. I cover the sport for a living. When I saw that, I was like, Tarleton State, could someone point that out to me on a map? And SMU, which has a good business school, but that's about it. So that, and Colorado, no shot because you played there, but I think they're an intramural franchise now. I think they went intermereals. Honestly. This TCU team has done everything that they've needed to do.
Starting point is 00:15:08 They're also one of the best offenses in college football. They've got an NFL wide receiver. I'm not suggesting that they're going to win the national championship. By the way, I would pick and will and have picked Texas to not only win this week, but cover the seven points. So it can play out. But that doesn't mean that TCU doesn't deserve to be ranked in that spot. I'm not just here to judge a beauty contest. The results on the field have to matter.
Starting point is 00:15:30 Okay. Okay. And so, like, I do not want to get into a situation where in college football, we throw results out the window and just have this four-team's subjective invitational tournament. That's not what I think it should have been. And that's not where I'm going to live. You guys have your Harbaugh video left. I said something this weekend, and I mean, I do a lot of tongue-in-cheek on Twitter. Okay. That platform's a lot of tongue-in-cheek. And this was a little tongue-in-cheek, but I do believe it. I think Michigan's the best team in the country. they can go toe to toe with Georgia and the pressure would be on Georgia. I think Michigan's better than Ohio State. I think people are reluctant to say it, but if you go back over the last 20 games, they got about 17 blowout wins in there. They are crushing, including Ohio State.
Starting point is 00:16:18 This is not Michigan from three and four years ago. Absolutely not. It's a different team. They're faster. They're better coached. They've got a better offensive line than Ohio State. The top of that, you said there's the best team that. No, Georgia is the best team in the country.
Starting point is 00:16:32 They've got the two best wins in the country. They'd be Tennessee and Oregon. Who would win if they play tomorrow? Michigan, Georgia. Probably Georgia. Okay. It might be close, but we just saw that game last year, and it wasn't ultimately all that close.
Starting point is 00:16:45 I think Michigan's a little bit better, and I don't think Georgia's quite as good. Okay, but Georgia lost 10 guys for the league. Maybe they're closer to one another than what they were a year ago, but I do think that Georgia is the best team in the country. That being said, though, when it comes to this Michigan and Ohio State game, it does feel like they are like locomotives just aimed at one another for November 26, right? I mean, and I think it's going to be an epic game because Michigan is suited to play with
Starting point is 00:17:09 Ohio State. And in particular with Ohio State struggle on the offensive line. They don't control the terms of the game like they need to with their offensive line. That was laid bare, the evidence last week in that windy game against Northwestern, a one win team. Here's what I would say, though, is that the reason I think Michigan has, like I moved them to number two over Ohio State. The reason being they have a higher floor than Ohio State. Ohio State can go to seventh gear, maybe eighth gear, and it's brilliant and beautiful. But the fact remains, Colin, I bet you every weather site in the country, weather on the internet, is being crashed by Buckeye fans refreshing for November 26th.
Starting point is 00:17:50 Like, what's the weather? And that shouldn't be the case. You're in the Big Ten. not be reliant on the weather to win a big 10 championship. If it's snowing, that's a Michigan game. If it's cold and winning. It was last year and all of a sudden you're in it. So let's put it in this perspective.
Starting point is 00:18:06 In a dome, I think Ohio State's probably the second best team in the country. That's the best matchup against Georgia. But all things being considered, like I can play it in the shoe in November and the 26, boy, Michigan's going to have a great shot. I want to throw this out to you. You know, a lot of people, they want me to just talk about USC a lot, and I don't think USC is a playoff team. I think they should go to the Rose Bowl, play, you know, loser, Michigan, Ohio State.
Starting point is 00:18:32 That's where they're at now. That'd be a fun game. They're not really that good right now. No, they're not. They're overrated in the playoff rankings. That sounded personal. Well, no, it's not personal. The committee overrated USC.
Starting point is 00:18:44 They're 109th in yards per play defense right now. In the last three games, their defense has been awful, given up 30. 8 a game. They've got Caleb Williams, Lincoln Riley, and it's like, is Jordan Addison healthy? I don't really know. And meanwhile, UCLA has two ranked wins. USC has no ranked wins. And UCLA's
Starting point is 00:19:02 loss is better than USC's loss. At Oregon is a lot better loss than at Utah. So why is UCLA four spots behind USC? It's only the logo on the side of the helmet. It's brand bias. No. It's Caleb Williams. Because he is so great. Do you know, I had a GM
Starting point is 00:19:17 telling me that... I don't think that... I just don't think that they beat UCLA. I'm not saying you're wrong. Again, America's honesty broker. We are seeing I die. I am not, this is not a knock. USC story is two people. Lincoln, Riley and Caleb William.
Starting point is 00:19:33 I don't disagree with that. And by the way, that's why I have Caleb Boehmson. It's still, to this moment, top four in the Heisman trophy race. He's that good. Oh, he's, I had a GM in the NFL tell me before the season. He said, you're going to agree with me very quickly. Caleb would go number one in the draft this year if he was available.
Starting point is 00:19:51 But they're flawed. Oh, God, they have one NFL player in their front seven. And by the way, they're thin. So as the season's gotten older and you've had injuries, they've gotten worse. Oh, progress. They don't have enough Sunday bodies. They have a sophomore safety and a junior defensive end.
Starting point is 00:20:05 That is it. It is just guys. It is a worse version of what Oklahoma was under Lincoln Ryan. That sounds personal. It's not personal at all. It's the truth. Oh, you had better. run game than USC has right now. They had a better
Starting point is 00:20:20 core wide receiver in particular with the way they're banged up and their defenses were just a little little bit better. You're right. Well, I mean, he took over a four and 18. This is a remarkable coaching story. By the way, you always conflate things. You like take an opinion and then you're like, oh, you think TCU's going to win the national championship? No. No, I don't think TCU's going to win the national championship. You watched that political stuff last night? It was wild. That was wild. Good TV,
Starting point is 00:20:43 though. This network at Fox, we do sports. We do live politics and news. And I'm here for all of them. That's it. That's it. That was crazy last night. It was a wild night. But basically, you know all last night told me?
Starting point is 00:20:55 What? Our country is either really red or really blue. Depends on the state. That's it. Just depends on the state. It's like red got red or blue got bluer. Okay, finally. That was hard hitting right there.
Starting point is 00:21:05 No, it was. You don't need Steve Kornacki. You just come here. That guy, by the way, is the single best guy in TV. Do you see him last night at one point? At one point, Clay's that he's that guy on MSNBC. He's the political guy with last guy. Colin, I wasn't watching MSNBC.
Starting point is 00:21:19 I watched both. I watch everything. So last night at one point, on live television, Kornicki looked like all of us. He is scrambling to find a paper. He's throwing crap everywhere. He's like Jimbo Fisher-Cullen plays. Just like throwing paper everywhere, glasses all over. I appreciate anybody that covers those election night teams, it's great.
Starting point is 00:21:37 They were laughing. I thought they were both great. I thought even I have preferences. I thought they were both fans. I thought all the people on those shows were great. You know, Colin, I'm often reminded that you like to wrap your eyes. arms around everybody. You know, you're just wrapping your arms around them.
Starting point is 00:21:51 I don't think you should. I think you should watch with a more keen eye. Okay. So here's a keen eye. I'd fire Oregon's athletic director who scheduled that stupid game against Georgia. Well, dude, I'm with you. Oregon, they should have never played that game against Georgia. Oregon had a new coach, a new staff, a new quarterback.
Starting point is 00:22:08 They are a top six or seven team, maybe top five, but because they open up at Georgia. And it's not just that. You have a new staff, college limited hours. But remember, you have to understand when the game was made. Okay, so it wasn't made this last offseason. So you don't know it's going to be a new staff and a new quarterback. So you can't blame for that. But it was made the year that Georgia went to the national championship game.
Starting point is 00:22:30 And you decide, like, let's go play Georgia in Atlanta. Why? Like, I'm sorry, that just doesn't make any sense. If you want to do a home-in-home, I can kind of understand it. Although, it's just like that game is almost single-handedly going to keep Oregon out of the playoffs. It's on the administration. I don't disagree with that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:49 I don't think they should have played that game. If I was the AD, I would have called Georgia about six days before the game. We're having a flight issues. We can't make it out there. Well, we're going to have to forfeit. A forfeit would be better because you could tell the pollsters, hey, we could have won. Now everybody, that's so embedded in their brain, everybody thinks Oregon is awful. They're really good, but they weren't ready for that game.
Starting point is 00:23:13 So I cancel stuff all the time. I guess. Don't make dinner plans with Colin. You should see who I'm having dinner with tonight. You know, that's disappointing. I raise my children to have integrity, and that's just not the case. I raise my kids to have a cigar and a good time.
Starting point is 00:23:28 We're different parents. Okay, Clat, you're awesome. You're doing, what game are you doing this weekend? Ohio State, Indiana, 40-point spread. I might just say it the whole game. It's just like, 28, 34. Just like, just start listening off. That's the deficit, just like play the spread the whole time.
Starting point is 00:23:46 Sorry, Indiana. That was rude. I apologize. First great advice I gave my son. He was 11. You know what I told him? This is how you light a cigar? No.
Starting point is 00:23:56 I said the first day you can bet legally, make a bet the rest of your life. What does that even mean? That means roll the dice and be interesting. It's a better life. You're out there preaching morals and values. I'm like, take the Rangers and the point. That's good parenting.
Starting point is 00:24:14 By the way, did you see LSUs only favored by three? at Arkansas? Well, that's because they faced Bama, and it's hard. Teams that beat Bama... Is it? Because that feels like a trick, right? I mean, isn't that like your wife walks down and it's like, how do these jeans look on me?
Starting point is 00:24:30 And you're like, um, yes. This feels like LSU minus three. Arkansas just lost by four to Liberty. That's a good point. What are we doing? Hey, one more thing about politics. Give me freedom and give me liberty. That's a good out right there.
Starting point is 00:24:47 Don't just don't give me liberty football. But give me freedom and liberty. You don't want to Hugh Fries getting a massive contract from Liberty? Oh, man, we're about to go into the triangle of freedom. Yeah. All right, I got to get out of here. All right, I understand. I understand. I understand. I understand.
Starting point is 00:25:02 Poor McIntyre has to watch this. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the IHeart radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but in It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Starting point is 00:25:24 Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:25:46 I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. Starting point is 00:26:45 Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of taun tons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to Stuff to Blow Your Mind on the iHeart Radio app,
Starting point is 00:27:12 Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your problem. podcast. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me. Not. just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:27:47 I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:06 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. In less than two weeks, the biggest sporting event in the world kicks off as Christian Pulisic leads the U.S. men's national team as they return to the World Cup stage for the first time in eight years. The FIFA World Cup starts November 20th on Fox and FS1. You know, you and I talked about this.
Starting point is 00:28:40 If I told you rank your four favorite sports, mine's NFL college football, NBA, and a big fight, a UFC fight, big fight. My wife doesn't like sports, but she'll go to these big fights. We have a blast. And then I am much more of a World Cup person that I am the Olympics because for a lot of reasons, I just don't care about luge or
Starting point is 00:29:00 relay races. I watch soccer. So I was a season ticket holder to L.A.F.C. for years. Tremendous environment. This weekend. Tremendous. So if I said to you, what are your four favorite sports? In order. Big four, the favorite four sports. Are we counting events like Olympics? No, no. I'm
Starting point is 00:29:16 My favorite event is World Cup. Your's World Cup? World Cup followed by March Madness. Those are the top two for me. But sports, yeah, NFL, NBA, college football, college basketball. I'm not into the big boxing UFC fights. I mean, I'll go hang out and have some beers with some buddies. You didn't grow up with it.
Starting point is 00:29:35 No. I grew up on the East Coast. I was like football, basketball. So my first job was Vegas. So I went to a lot of fights. And you get addicted to it. Did you hang out on the strip a lot? I'm trying to think of young cowherd.
Starting point is 00:29:46 No, but I went to Jerry Tarkhanian ran the rebels, and I went to a lot of fights. If you look up, I was at like, if you go into the 90s and 80s, late 80s and 90s, like the Hagler-Hern stuff, I was at the fan-man. Have you ever heard of the fan-man fight? It's the craziest thing in the history of boxing, the fan man. Oh, the guy who parachuted in or whatever? Yeah, I was two rows back. Oh, wow. Staring at it hit the ring.
Starting point is 00:30:09 Oh, it was the craziest night of my life in sports. Look up fan man, YouTube. I'm second. I've watched the video a hundred times to see if I can find. me, but the video's always from behind where I was sitting so you can't see me. It's the craziest night of my life in Vegas, and I had some crazy Vegas back. And it involved a fight and a guy on a parachute? It was, it's hard to explain the device he flew in on, but it involved a lot of propellers. I'm not allowed to talk about the craziest nights in Vegas. It's just off limits.
Starting point is 00:30:35 All right. J-Mack with the news. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. But look it up. Fanman, Vegas. Just go look it up on YouTube today. I'll get right on that. All right, let's go to the Brooklyn Nets call. In about an hour ago, they announced that they've hired Jacques Vaughn as their next head coach. He had been an assistant with Brooklyn since 2016 filling in his interim coach. What's interesting here is, I think it was a week ago. Yes.
Starting point is 00:31:01 All the reports. Nash fired Ima Udoka probably in 72 hours. Never came. How ticked off do you think Nets Brasses? They wanted him, obviously, that they now can't get him because of the kerfuffle that Kairie Irving stirred up last week. I read, I think it was from an athletic reporter. I apologize for not giving the person credit, but that Adam Silver contacted the Brooklyn Nets owner and was very apprehensive about hiring the former Celtic coach. Yeah, I mean, you've got Kyrie Irving
Starting point is 00:31:34 reducing your franchise to rubble and now you want to bring in a guy who basically got suspended for the year in Boston because of some off-court stuff. I mean, Brooklyn is a train wreck. They're a mess. And here's poor Kevin Durant. Well, I shouldn't say that. He chose it. But Kevin Durant is just in the middle of this pile of rubble. When do we start to fire up the Kevin Durant trade stuff?
Starting point is 00:31:55 Because Colin, it's getting it. Like, they're obviously going nowhere. Right, right. Kyrie's not coming back. What's the market like for Kevin Durant? I mean, he's still a very, very good. I don't know if he's a top five player in the league right now? Oh, yes, he is.
Starting point is 00:32:08 Oh, you don't think Katie's a top five player? Who? I mean, okay. Okay, I can say you get five guys in the league. I would take young. I go Luca. I go Janus 2. Luca, you're number 2?
Starting point is 00:32:19 We both go Janus 1, Luca, 2. And then it's Steph Curry. Steph would be my 3. KD. 4. I would take Jason Tatum over Katie. Younger, more athletic. Is there a timeline? I'm talking just to win now.
Starting point is 00:32:34 Win now? Kevin Durant. I would say Kowai Leonard just to see the look on your... Kaui Leonard? Because you've got to hear during commercial breaks cowherts ranting about Kaui Leland. You're a Clipper fan. He never plays.
Starting point is 00:32:47 You pay all the money for season tickets. He's never there. Sat out like, I think it was 17 months or 19 months. I would be furious if I bought Clipper season tickets. What about Steve Balmer? How ticked off that? This is year four of Kyrie and. So that's interesting.
Starting point is 00:33:00 If we both got. So let's say it's a three-year timeline in the NBA. It's a three-year timeline. So whoever you get, you care about three years. Janus, Luca, Kate, Janus, Luca, staff. Steph. Hold on.
Starting point is 00:33:15 KD. What about Yokic? I think you want an MVP or two. No. I'm out on picking Denver teams. Jason Tatum, I like. Oh, I love Tatum.
Starting point is 00:33:26 What about Joel Embed? I don't trust him in the play. He's going to be healthy. He has been healthy. Yokic is a great stat player. Show me the playoff wins. Fun fact, Joel Embed has never been to a conference finals. I know.
Starting point is 00:33:39 I like him. But again, this is this sport. I don't care about February, I care about June. You know, you're probably right. I take it back. Kevin Durant has to be top five, because once he leaves Brooklyn, he's going to be locked in. Shucks, man, this is an embarrassing. This is a stain on my career. This is probably keeping me out of like top 10 all time, right? He was on the fringe of that. He's not a top 10 player. Most of that is his undoing. If he stayed with Golden State, he would be a top 10 player because he'd still be there in winning titles. And I think you'd be,
Starting point is 00:34:11 if he was still there with all those guys and winning titles, he may be 9 or 10, but I put him in. Does Polinka call the Brooklyn Nets? Hey, do you want Anthony Davis? Polinka's got to get on the phone with somebody because just not giving up draft picks. There's no value in having plentiful draft picks in Los Angeles, a distracted city with multiple pro and college teams. And hey, hey, we got draft picks in four years.
Starting point is 00:34:36 Nobody cares in L.A. about that. By the way, Lakers Clippers tonight, If the Lakers lose, I think they're last in the Western Conference, and Clippers are not expected to have Kauai Leonard. You better not lose this game. Clippers are a better team. Clippers will win that game. Clippers are the better.
Starting point is 00:34:50 Whether or without Kauai, they're better. They're deeper. They have more versatile wing defenders and more shooters. Is Lonnie Walker going to play for the Lakers? Who knows? He's their third best player. All right. Next story.
Starting point is 00:34:59 Green Bay Packers have lost five straight. A lot of injuries, Colin. It's getting ugly on the defensive side of the ball. Things aren't looking good for Aaron Rogers. Looks like no Watson, no Romeo Dobbs. But team president, Mark Murphy, he's not giving up hope yet. We're all very disappointed. The expectations, and rightly so, we're very high going into the season.
Starting point is 00:35:17 I have a lot of confidence in Matt LaFleur, Brian Gutiakunst, and executive Russ Ball. My expectation is we will play well, we will improve. I know things look bleak, but things can change quickly in the NFL. We're not ready to give up on the season. What if they get blasted by Dallas? Season over. At three and seven, they're done. It's over.
Starting point is 00:35:36 That's what I think. Because after that, it's Tennessee. and then at Philly. So, like, they're scheduling. I think we said this before the season. I don't know. I don't have their schedule in front of me, but I think November was kind of the mud,
Starting point is 00:35:51 kind of the tough spot where it could get. It's just so weird. Coming into the season, we had so many questions about McCarthy and Dallas. Is he going to survive? Remember Dak got hurt week one? Geez, McCarthy, is he going to be toast? And now everybody trusts McCarthy going back to Green Bay.
Starting point is 00:36:03 No, I don't trust him in the playoffs, but I do think they'll win Sunday. I think the best game Sunday. Maybe it's one of my picks. I like Seattle, Tampa is a fascinating game, the one in Munich. This is becoming the Seattle Seahawks' like three-hour binge watch. I mean, Seahawks fans love you now. I like winners.
Starting point is 00:36:21 I like winners. Geno Smith is the winner, huh? All right, Steelers. I'm sorry. Steelers have been struggling a lot this season. You know the bottom of the league on offense? Mike Tomlin hasn't had a losing season since becoming head coach in 2007. Here's what he said when asked if he's open to making change.
Starting point is 00:36:37 to the current game plan and getting younger players on the field? If it's conducive to engineering victory, that's our sole agenda. It's putting together a plan and highlighting the skills of players that produce victory. And so if that's an opponent of the equation, then certainly. We're singularly focused on this week's opportunity, which is to win this game. Steelers hosting the Saints, New Orleans, short week. Monday Night Football Lost, they are two and a half point. favorites in Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 00:37:09 Tomlin is an underdog. Come on. You got to ride Pickett, right? It's not something I've savor or... Not a marquee game this week? Well, you said I have to, you know, ride Kenny Pickett. I don't have a lot of confidence in Kenny Picker. Coming off the by?
Starting point is 00:37:25 Come on. Matt, Canada, had a whole week to put in a new install. He's had three years to get the offense. He's not very good. By the way, did you see they're out on Najee Harris? Steelers fans are calling for the backup. Naja Harris tap dancing a lot. Well, how about the offensive line?
Starting point is 00:37:40 Why is it Naji Harris's fault? Create holes. Steelers fans, man. These guys are irrational. Well, again, proud franchise, desperation, then you start doing half-truth. Nogie Harris is no good. No, Nogie Harris isn't great,
Starting point is 00:37:56 but the O-Line's not good. They've been working on it for four years. They still can't get the O-Line right. J-Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lie News. live editions of the herd weekdays in noon
Starting point is 00:38:11 Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Hey, what's up, everybody? It's me, three-time Pro Bowl of LaVore Arrington, and I couldn't be more excited to announce a new podcast called Up On Game. What is Up on Game, you ask? Along with my fellow Pro Bowler, T.J. Hushman Zada and Super Bowl champion. Yep, that's right. Plexico Burris. You can only name a show with that type of talent on it.
Starting point is 00:38:38 Up on game. We're going to be sharing our real-life experiences loaded with teachable moments. Listen to Up on Game with me, LaVar Arington, T.J. Hushmanzada, and Plexico Burris on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast from. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Starting point is 00:39:08 Either way, the podcast, Superhuman, documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care which I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th.

Listen to Stuff to Blow Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking.
Starting point is 00:41:09 What the hell does George Bush got to do a little count? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:41:28 To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:41:50 Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Boot the losing team. Go with the winner. Switch to Consumer Cellular for Talk, Text, and Data. $20 a month, limited time offer.
Starting point is 00:42:07 consumer cellular.com slash the herd. promo code the herd. You get 25 bucks off and you sign up today. So it is interesting what's going on. I had Jeff Howe, the athletic on earlier. And one thing we know about trades is that a lot of the things that happen in these sports, they just come out of nowhere. You can't predict.
Starting point is 00:42:27 I mean, Kevin Durand to the Warriors, like happen fast. And Brady to Tampa. I was on the air. Happened fast. And I said, You know, when you get divorced, that is such a life-altering event. So Tom Brady's 45. I think one of the reasons he moved to Florida when he was a patriot was Tom warm weather.
Starting point is 00:42:52 His wife had great influence, more international city than Boston. And now he's divorced. What's your loyalty to Florida? Tom's never felt like a Florida guy to me. He's a Northern California kid. and I think he acclimated to the Northeast, but he doesn't even feel like a Northeast guy, right? Like I always thought Tommy's just, Tommy's Tommy.
Starting point is 00:43:14 He's not loyal. He's in Northern California. That's where his family is. His favorite team was the Niners. He feels very California to me. High school, wanted to play college there. They overlooked him. So his parents are getting older.
Starting point is 00:43:27 If Tampa, like if he won a Super Bowl, I don't think it's possible. He may just call it a career. But I think there's, stuff here that's really, really possible. And one of the things I think is possible is San Francisco with that roster loses in the playoffs, you know, like to a Minnesota or a team like a Seattle. And they feel they're a better team and Garoppolo doesn't play well.
Starting point is 00:43:52 And Shanahan's like, I don't trust Tray Lance. I'm moving off Garapolo and they would go get Brady. And Brady's parents are getting older. And he's a Niner fan in a Northern California kid. And he would go to San Francisco. and he'd figure out a way to make his salary count. I think it's very possible. Jeff Howe, I talked about it.
Starting point is 00:44:09 He used to cover the Patriots. I said it may seem daffy, but he keeps complaining about, you know, Tampa doesn't have things buttoned up, buttoned up. Say what you want about Belichick and Kyle Shanahan. They got stuff buttoned up. They're intense. So is Brady.
Starting point is 00:44:26 Tampa's always felt very loose. And Tom's struggled with kind of tightening things up, commitment, pre-snap. Anyway, Jeff Howell, when I threw out this theory, said this. My theory is, if Brady continues to be frustrated for the remainder of this season in Tampa, and he's going to become a free agent, if he still wants to keep playing, I don't think he's going to want to come back at age 46, seeing an organization or a roster that he doesn't think is going to meet his Super Bowl expectations, and he would enjoy,
Starting point is 00:44:59 again, becoming a free agent. So who is he going to look at? Of course he would be gravitated toward his hometown 49ers. I think he would also be gravitated toward Josh McDaniels and the Raiders if they want to split with Derek Carr. And I'm not willing to rule out a potential return to the Patriots. I think at this point in his career, familiarity is going to be important. Reason I think the Raiders and the Patriots would be a distant second or third is because Tom would prefer the NFC. Here is the current.
Starting point is 00:45:29 If the season ended today, this would be the. route to the Super Bowl for Tom Brady in the NFC. I think he wants to stay in this conference. Jalen Hertz, a number one seed would have a buy. Cousins would face Garoppolo. I'd take Garoppolo and the Niners. Gino would face Daniel Jones. I'd probably take Seattle, probably.
Starting point is 00:45:51 They'd be at home if they won the division. Brady would face DAC. So you start looking around. I would take Gino and then it would be Hertz against Garoppolo. Again, I would take the Niners roster and experience to win that, Brady over Gino, and Tom would face his former understudy to get to the Super Bowl. That's pretty darn attractive to me. Now, if you go over to the AFC, this is why I, not that I would totally discount Belichick
Starting point is 00:46:18 and the Raiders, Josh Allen get to buy. Then it's Herbert Mahalms, Lamar and Tua at Tanna Hill and Zach Wilson. Now, Zach Wilson's obviously the weakest, but let's look at after that for a comp. then it's literally it's Josh Allen and Tannahill both of one playoff games it's Mahomes and Lamar Jackson MVP's and then you know I would go with Josh Allen and Mahomes that is a lot tougher sled to get through and I do think Tom thinks about that I think one of the reasons he chose Tampa was all their weapons I mean he looked at it and he just went outside of like right tackle maybe another running back they've got all the weapons brought grong down I think Tom looks at everything at
Starting point is 00:46:59 45 years old. So I think the Niners makes a lot of sense. And that's not a knock on Garoppolo or Jalen Hertz or Gino. I mean, they're having great years. But boy, you put, if quarterbacks matter, and we know they do, you put the quarterbacks you go through in the NFC over the AFC. Nick Wright was on our show yesterday, and Nick's not a huge Brady fan because he loves Mahomes. This was Nick right yesterday on Brady's potential path. Your guy, Tom Brady, if they're the four seat, the only road playoff games would be against Jalen Hertz
Starting point is 00:47:33 who's 0 for 1 in the playoffs lost to Brady Geno Smith who's never been in the playoffs and Kirk Cousins Tom Brady is going to go 8 and 9 and then host a playoff game and then go visit Kurt Cousins and then potentially have Jimmy Garoppolo
Starting point is 00:47:49 or Gino Smith to go to his 11th Super Bowl and I'm going to lose my mind It's not I mean, it's not far-fetched. It's just been a strange year. The Seahawks are a massive surprise. I think they're a wonderful surprise. I think it's a great story, and Pete Carroll can roll his eyes at all of us amateur critics.
Starting point is 00:48:11 But that's why Niners feels right to me. I think it's a little early to give the Seahawks the division. I mean, the schedule points to the 49ers. I think they're going to overtake them. And then San Fran is not going on the road. But I can't believe you. pick the Titans to beat my Jets. Are you kidding me? The Tennessee
Starting point is 00:48:31 Titans? No shot. They did not get a first down in the second half at Arrowhead and took the game to overtime. Mike Frable was a great coach, yes. Didn't get a single first down. Not one. And took the Chiefs and Mahomes and Andy Reid overtime. We may need to make a... With a backup quarterback.
Starting point is 00:48:50 Hour three. Next. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy. Not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends.
