This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's
superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
On the Look Back at it podcast.
From 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 was big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year.
It was a wild year.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
A win is a win.
A win is a win.
I don't care what I'm saying.
Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media.
Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show.
This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard,
but celebrated.
So let's get to it.

Here we go.
It is our number two.
It is flying by.
We are live in Los Angeles.
It's the herd.
Wherever you may be, however you may be listening, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports
Radio, FS1.
I know many people.
Airport, picked my wife up Saturday, was packed over the next several days.
Lots of you are traveling.
Please be safe.
Spend time with your family.
This is one of the better weeks of the year.
We appreciate you joining us today.
you have a lot of options.
And yes, I'm going to be fairly intolerable this week.
USC1, Notre Dame is next, greater than I ever would have predicted.
And J-Mack is joining.
Listen, I don't want you to get down.
That was a very winnable game.
The punt return, you can argue, there was a clip.
Jet fans thought there was a clip.
They're not going to call that clip there.
Whatever.
You're not going to call that.
But you don't want to get too down.
Jet schedules either.
easier down the stretch than Cincinnati's.
So I think there's two or three teams we know we're going to make the playoffs in the
AFC.
And then it's going to...
The wild card list is pretty thin.
I mean, are the chargers in the mix, five and five?
Yes.
Are they good?
I don't know.
They're good enough to battle to the end.
That's going to be a fascinating.
That's a good question.
Justin Herbert's too good to not make the playoffs back-to-back years.
He's too good.
Steelers are out, right?
But that's a rebuilding year.
We get that.
It's going to be...
The wild cards are.
going to be Miami, the Jets, New England.
They'll see. Their schedule gets tough. They have a brutal one this week against the Vikings
on a short week. Mack Jones, by the way, he's not good, Colin. We can admit that, right?
He's not a good quarterback right now. Yes, I'm doing that as well.
All right. Colin Wright, Colin wrong, plenty of both on a Monday, and here we go.
Where Colin was right. Blazing five had a great week. We were four and one. All the games
broke our way.
We had the chargers plus the points.
We had the Bengals, Cowboys, Raiders.
Four and one is hard to do.
We're happy with it.
Last week, the games broke the opposite way.
This week they broke in our direction.
Four out of five, winning week.
Feeling good about that.
Where Colin was wrong.
Well, I left New England for dead.
I just don't get their offense at all, but they are six and four.
They would be, believe it or not, a playoff team today and a sixth seed.
third time this year they held an opponent to three points or less.
Their defense is second in the league.
Their special teams are reliable, actually won them the game yesterday.
Their run game isn't great, but it's certainly solid.
The ceiling is obvious.
Their 20th in point scored.
But Belichick on defense run game special teams today has them as a playoff caliber team.
Where Colin was right?
I said USC would beat UCLA.
I said it's high scoring.
It'll be close.
and it will be decided because Caleb Williams will make a play,
and that's essentially exactly what happened.
33 touchdowns, three picks.
Chip Kelly said, best college quarterback I've ever seen or ever faced.
We said this earlier in the year.
He would be the number one pick.
Don't even argue in the NFL draft.
He's got a lot of Mahalms.
He's got one great receiver in Jordan Addison.
This is a very, very well-coached team that is incredibly resourceful.
A lot of transfers, a lot of kids who probably don't play on Sundays playing together.
But the game against the Bruins was precisely what we thought it would be.
Where Colin was wrong.
Taylor Heineke keeps winning.
I mean, it may be ugly.
15 of 27, no touchdowns, no picks, but Jay Mack called it.
He mostly wins the locker room, lets Washington's defense win the game.
He's got a fairly low ceiling.
but a lot of what he does is a vibe,
and Carson Wentz turned off a lot of dudes in the room.
Heineke has got that sort of blue-collar overachiever thing,
doesn't think he's better than he is,
and mostly avoids disasters.
Here was Ron Rivera after.
We're going to go with Taylor,
and we'll work Carson back in and see where Carson is
in terms of if he's ready to be the backup.
What was it Taylor has shown you to lead you to this decision?
winning
that matters winning
where Colin was right
well I really like the Jets general manager
Joe Douglas I did not get the fascination
with Zach Wilson
I just didn't get it I thought he was
undisciplined a little small
play too much hero ball
and doesn't really
hold himself accountable I think there's talent there
I get that he's got a beautiful arm
and I and you know I wouldn't bench him yet
I think you have to play him for the rest of the season and see what you have.
Maybe he can turn it around.
And in fairness to Zach, he didn't get much run support and Belichick's the best defensive
coach on the planet.
So let's be fair here.
We weren't looking for 250 yards throwing.
We were looking for 160 and figuring out a way to win 10 to 3.
He couldn't do it.
But so far, I've been right on Zach Wilson.
Where Colin was wrong.
I thought the firing of the head coach and all the noise would be a problem for the Boston
Celtics.
But instead, now Jason Taylor.
Tatum is healthy, and he's averaging 30 a night.
Boy, Tatum's been unbelievable.
The new head coach, they're the best team in the NBA.
Now, I still think they're very dependent on the health of Senator Robert Williams.
When he plays, this is a great defensive team that can beat anybody, but Robert Williams gives you a shot against Janus or M.B., and his health will be huge.
But the new coach, old coach, doesn't matter.
Good roster.
culture and Tatum is just absolutely fantastic so far.
They're 13 and 3 best record in the league.
Where Colin was right?
Well, we predicted hot and cold Anthony Davis would have a great first half of the NBA season.
I said, because of all the criticism levied against him last year, he'll work hard,
he'll come in shape, and he'll battle.
He's got three straight 30-plus games.
He's top five in the NBA in rebounds and block.
when he is engaged and healthy and in shape, AD is fantastic.
25 and 12 and on the defensive end, a game changer.
This was predictable.
I still contend that eventually he will meet his match physically and that if you want to move somebody,
this is not a championship team, it's not close.
They need wing defenders and shooters.
Take phone calls on Anthony Davis.
This great first half was a big first half.
entirely predictable.
Where Colin was right?
I didn't and don't enjoy watching Titans football, but I've got to tell you.
I said Mike Vrable's on a short list of best coaches in this league, and when they beat Green Bay
on Thursday, they're seven and three.
And what's remarkable, Ryan Tannahill's been hurt.
The backup's a kid, a later round kid.
They've had half the defense gone, some of their offensive linemen gone.
They took the chiefs to overtime without.
getting a first down in the second half.
Mike Vrable's teams look like Mike Vrable, play like Mike Vrable played, resourceful and
tough and smart and physical.
And we told you, weeks ago, Vrable's on a short list of great coaches in the National
Football League.
By the way, Sean Payton's coming up right around the corner.
The Raiders are interesting.
So I've got to say this.
So I watched the Raiders Denver.
It was on my second TV, but I watched it.
So I've got a couple of thoughts.
So Denver's first time head coach Nathaniel Hackett, he's an offensive guy, right?
Well, after week one or week two, they hired a guy to run the clock for him, so he can't do that.
He is now relieved himself of the play calling duties.
he doesn't have anything to do with their defense, obviously.
So it's like the line from the movie Office Space.
What would you say you do here?
And not calling plays.
He's not running the clock.
He's not doing defense.
He's not doing special teams.
The staffs in Audwin and Denver,
where only Dom Capers have head coaching experience,
they are 0 and 3 in games they've led by 10.
With that defense.
So I'm not sure what he does.
I'm not sure where you go.
I would give it to Dom Capers.
I think all the talent defensively rebuild the locker room they've lost trust.
But I also want to talk about not just the negative, the positive of what the Raiders did yesterday.
And I said this last week.
They have lost six close games.
Max Crosby's playing great.
Derek Carr is getting the ball to Devante Adams.
I see passion.
I see caring, I see losing close, I see getting the ball to Devante Adams, I see Max
Crosby still crushing it, they and their fans should be hopeful.
They needed a big play and their quarterback got the ball to the right guy.
There are pieces, there is hope, there is talent, they are close.
There is a big gap between the Raiders struggling and Denver struggling.
I think the Raiders have the right coach.
I think you can win with this quarterback.
They're good at important positions like pass rusher, wide receiver, quarterback, left tackle.
They've got players.
So I said all last week, don't lump the Raiders and Denver together.
I think the Raiders are close.
They're close.
I do think they, I mean, it feels like they've been rebuilding this defense in this secondary
for seven years.
They've missed on a lot of pieces.
But I don't know.
watched that game, I felt the entire game. The Raiders were better. The Raiders would make a play,
even though they trailed and they trailed late. I really thought the better team was the Raiders,
and they'd figure out a way to win that game, and they did, and they won it the right way.
With their often maligned quarterback, having enough time, making a throw to their great receiver,
they went to the right players at the biggest moment. That's what winning teams do. So I would not sell all
your raider stock. Here was
Russell Wilson for the record
after another
agonizing loss.
What hurts probably more than anything else,
I would say, is that
these games are close.
One score games, you know,
and we have to be able to find ways to win them.
We have really good potential on offense.
Potential doesn't mean anything.
It just means that we haven't done it yet.
But we're going to keep working for it. That's for sure.
I do not see light at the end of that tunnel.
Can I ask you something about Russ?
Did you see their final drive, Colin, at the end of regulation?
He made just a catastrophic mistake.
All they needed to do was runtime off the clock because the Raiders were out of timeouts.
Instead of doing what Taylor Heineke did, remember he took a knee and got drilled,
Russ threw it away, incomplete, stops the clock.
Could have bled at least 33 seconds off the clock.
Raiders come down, get the field goal, sends it to overtime.
I know Hackett's a bit of a buffoon.
But Russell Wilson was really bad at the end of regular.
And that was one of his best games of the season.
Oh, no, he actually, he, but well.
Oh, I thought Russell played really, really well.
I thought he had Libwell from the pocket well.
I thought he played very well.
But for a veteran to make that mistake, Colin.
No, it's fair.
Totally fair.
Did not want to go at Russ.
But he's like, I wish we had kept the clock running.
Yeah.

What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look

with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

to the Sean Payton era. He's on our Fox NFL kickoff. We love having him here on a Monday.
Last week he was traveling, doing speeches and weddings and all the important stuff in life.
Just went to dinner with his lovely wife and got the company of Sean Payton.
And she's wonderful. You were wonderful. So it's great to have you back.
You know, I was watching Mahomes last.
I watched Caleb Williams for USC Saturday.
Boy, that was something.
I watched that.
I had a chance to see most all of that game.
What do you see with him?
I see.
Now, I'm going to be professional here because I haven't seen the 22 copy tape.
In other words, I'm watching the TV version, but watching the highlights.
And I see all the things that you look for.
You know, in other words,
There's a presence.
There's, there's, I see athleticism and accuracy.
Yes.
And in a big spot, he's fun to watch.
Look at that, throw.
He's fun to watch.
I like what I see from him more on TV than what I'm supposed to be liking a lot from some of these others without talking about who the others are.
Right.
I agree with what you were discussing earlier when it was said he might be the first pick if he were coming out this year.
And just off of the TV stuff, I wouldn't disagree.
So you watch, and the comp for him is Mahomes, which is always unfair.
It's a good starting spot, though.
Yeah, it's not bad.
There is something about this is that it's very rare.
We always knew Brady, you didn't want to give him too much time.
But with Mahomes, literally, when they were down to a minute 50, the discussion started,
this is way too early.
No, it was about two and a half.
And the announcers, last night, Trinico was talking about, okay, now you've got to slow this puppy down.
And it's like, so you, you know, the Mahomes factor, I mean, we always knew that you give Breeze,
Brady, Manning.
We know that, but it feels like 50 seconds now is the threshold for Mahomes.
they didn't have a spy on him.
What did you make of the defense?
Yeah, look, there's a lot of routes to go.
Obviously, you're trying to keep them in the pocket.
You're trying to get extra help on a certain player like Kelsey.
And, man, for the most part, that was a back-and-forth battle, obviously,
and listening to him being interviewed after the game.
and I think this, his off-schedule ability,
and I'm talking about this throw right here by Mahomes was amazing.
You know, the tight end turned up and it was boom, right there.
I still get back to if you're able to really see all the other things
that are happening with this player during the course of the game
is where you really appreciate his greatness.
We see the physical skill set,
but his ability mentally to present.
process very quickly.
He's narrating cover zero.
He's narrating,
hey, number three is coming down in the box.
Like the additional information
he's providing for
his teammates is uncanny.
And he takes pride in it.
You can see. And so I think
the one thing,
which is difficult for me to watch,
I can kick a field goal slow.
Like, I can take time.
bleed time off the clock and kick a field goal and use the clock to kick a field goal.
I don't know how to do that and score touchdown.
And so a lot of times I'll hear a young group announcing the game or a veteran group say,
well, be careful we don't score too quickly here.
And then I think to myself, how do I score slow touchdown?
Meaning am I just choosing to score it on fourth down?
Now, I know I can use the clock in the huddle and get to the line of scrimmage and not, I understand that.
Right, right, right.
But scoring a slow field goal is easy.
Slow touchdowns, I just don't know how to do that yet.
Yeah.
By the way, Herbert is a different, he's a little more mechanical than Mahalms.
But when I watch him, he made a play last night, and it was a little play.
But it's one of those that a pro athlete does, and people just watch it and TV and think it's easy.
it was his last touchdown where he can wait an extra beat because his arm is so strong.
He can give that defense.
He can get right in his face.
And then he was backpedaling.
And it was only about a 16, 15, 12-yard throw.
It was just a rope.
And I'm like, that's a pro athlete.
You know, the Jordans and they make everything look so easy.
I think Herbert can be a little mechanical.
But delivery of ball, I like, like Burrow, it makes a mistake, forgets it.
Yeah.
That's why the game was so good last night, because when you're really paying attention to it all,
it's no different than when you're seeing Mahomes and Allen go at it.
We're seeing two of the better, we're seeing the best in the game right now,
and then arguably one of the other top four or five.
And that was exciting to me to watch the skill level of those players.
And, you know, I heard you, just when you guys started before I left the house,
it's that downer if you have someone else and you're contending and you realize, well,
we're not even on the same T-box as these guys.
Well, if you have to start convincing yourself.
Yeah, yeah, but we just, but we're wanting to, like we were talking earlier,
we're wanting to get to that major.
We want to get to Augusta.
Right.
And then we'll worry about the black T's when we get there, you know, all the way back.
We'll figure that out.
So you've said on this show before, you like when a team plays,
poorly and wins because you can coach them home. Yeah, I think taking advantage of a win sometimes
and you know you didn't play your best football, all these coaches today, Monday is, we've talked
about it. The first half of the day is the game you just played, the corrections, getting the
players treatment, and then the second half of the day you jump on the next opponent. So everyone's
coaching off of mistakes. There's no perfect game played. But periodically, you can have a game you
win and you know and you know your players know, hey, we got a lot of work to do still.
And I think that's a, you can grow in those type of situations.
Or you're the Cowboys when you literally win by the middle of the second quarter.
So Mike McCarthy now, it's interesting.
They have a series of games at home against average teams.
They came off a blowout on the road.
What's that like?
How do you bring that locker room down just a bit?
That's a great question.
I think, look, you're going to go in there and you're going to discuss the corrections.
And look, that was an extremely well-played game by Dallas.
Yes.
But I think you're going to take the approach.
Well, then who scares us?
In other words, if that's what we can do and you've kind of shown your hand talking to your team,
then who do you get worried about?
And the point is, hey, if we play like we're capable of playing, then, you know, we have a shot to be one of these teams.
And there's two or three of them and there's two or three of them in the AFC.
So I think honesty is always a good approach with your team.
And the honest truth is we can be dominant defensively.
We had great balance offensively.
His numbers were fantastic.
Right.
The balance with the running backs and all.
I would be very forthright and just say, hey, this is what we're capable doing.
And that was against a good team.
Oh, yeah.
That was against a good team.
So when you talked about this, Jimmy Johnson said something about a month ago.
He said, and he got some pushback.
He said, I want to see teams play Philadelphia a second time.
I heard them.
And it's people are like, whoa.
And it's like, well, we've always known Thanksgiving football on.
is different. So we're seeing some of these robust teams, Philadelphia, come way back down to
earth. Explain that. What is happening to Philadelphia's dynamic offense in the last couple of
weeks? Well, I think the first thing is it's our league in that the margin between, let's say,
the Eagles and a middle of the pack NFC team is much closer than the margin.
of Ohio State and Purdue.
And so, and then secondly, I think, you know, we all get all the tape.
Every team gets every game played.
So when you're playing the Eagles this upcoming week, you have 11 weeks of their season.
You can go back to last season if you want it.
You have all of their games last year.
I think there's an ebb and flow to how a team plays sometimes.
They were certainly one of the hottest teams.
in our league. And they've just, you know, for whatever reason. Now, I sometimes like to look on the
other side of the slate and say, look, Indianapolis has found a little new life here. They did last
week with a win, you know, two more wins and he was going to become Jeff Sunday, not Jeff Saturday.
That's what I said. We were going to give him a new name. So I think Indianapolis probably played a little
bit more up to their standard defensively. They were a good defense a year ago. I still think,
think, and it's interesting now as you watch this NFC shape up, I still think one of the better
teams in the NFC is going to play tonight and it's San Francisco. And we very well could see
a San Francisco Philly type NFC championship game or the rematch of the 49ers and the Cowboys,
which was the last year. Last year's, was it wild card game? Yeah. So one of the things I try to
avoid and I often don't is confirmation bias. So I didn't love Zach Wilson out of college. So
So it's easy for me if he struggles to go, yeah, see, I told you so.
Yeah.
And I'm trying to stay out of that.
I didn't love Daniel Jones out of college.
That's okay.
With Carson Wentz, I hung on because I liked him out of college.
I hung on too long.
Sure.
So I was always worried about Zach.
My takeaway, he was Johnny Mansell with a great arm.
I didn't see discipline.
Kind of hero balled it, a little small for my liking, but a big arm talent.
But I saw a looseness and a casualness and a dependence on spectacular.
This league is a lot about curls and flat and timeout and spectacular.
The coaching's too good.
Even Mahomes.
You don't get that much spectacular in this league.
So now you're sitting there if you're the coach.
And I think Sala, I'm starting to see Sala's footprint, the defense, the passion, the physicality.
I agree.
I can see as coach.
I agree.
So you're sitting there thinking, boy, I like my GM.
I like my coach.
How long?
What do you got to see?
so that when you have those meetings where the quarterback's not in it,
what do you have to see going forward for that?
It's a great question.
And I think that what they're able to see that we can't see
are all the other reps that take place in training camp
and all the other positives and negatives that take place during the course of the week,
all the other.
And so they probably sitting in a staff meeting today have a better,
feeling of where they feel like they're at with him than we do. The mistake oftentimes in our
league, though, is admitting when it comes to something like that, you know, a first round pick
a quarterback that we made a mistake. And so then it can be compounded though, and that costs
everyone their job. And so I think this, I think they'll have a good idea when this season ends.
Is this guy going to be a part of our Super Bowl? We always talk.
about the roster this way. Is this guy going to be here when we win the next Super Bowl
or is there going to be someone else in his spot? And so that was the language we used in New Orleans.
Is he going to be a part of our next Super Bowl win? And that just allowed you to think long-term,
he's going to be part of the solution as opposed to he's holding the fort right now. Because
every team, you know, you have to have a handful of these hold the fort guys. Your roster's
made up that way. But I think, look,
the loss of the running back has hurt them.
They had no run game yesterday.
The greatest ally you can give that position is a running game.
And back to Mahomes, like this running back, their hand in the ball off to now.
All right, not Edwards Bell, but this late round pick, where's he from?
Number 10?
What's his number?
The Checo.
Listen, what did we like about him last?
So when Patrick gets a snap and he hands it to Pacheco and it gains 14 yards,
there's just another snap that I'm going to have X amount of these in the game.
And I think guys, when we evaluate, I always say this about Kyler, Murray.
I want to see him have some easy snaps and teammates make some plays for him
where he doesn't have to jump off the high dive.
And I felt like I noticed that runner yesterday.
I mean, he was explosive and he did some good things.
It's going to be more difficult for Zach if that doesn't exist, if it's just all me.
And so their ability, I'm talking about the Jets, to run the football,
is going to allow those people in charge of evaluating the quarterback a better opportunity in the evaluation process.
because currently if we're evaluating on what we're currently seeing from their offense,
we may move on and we may realize, look, it's been overall the offense and the surrounding parts.
So I think they've got to be better at running the football, and I think that'll help him a little bit.
But, yeah, I mean, to watch that game unfold with like a walk-off punt return.
Oh, boy.
And I know New England's good on defense, and certainly they're well-coached.
But this was the season.
The Jets are going to beat the Patriots.
That was the game.
That game was there for you.
This is it.
Here we go.
It's been forever.
So, you know, I've been doing this long enough that I have enough guys in the executive
suite and scouts.
And they've always sort of held you and Andy Reed to a different standard.
They'll be like, uh, Peyton and Andy.
You're just viewed.
Now, Shanahan has moved into that young sort of offensive guy that's got a system that
is just a pain in the butt to face.
Yeah.
He can run on you?
even when you stack the box.
So you and Andy have had, for the greater part of 15 years,
have been the offensive guys, the innovators, the playmakers,
the schematic guys that you're not going to solve.
You just keep coming up with stuff.
When you, I want to circle back to the Chiefs,
one of the things I like about Mahomes is his ability, because Andy's hard.
Like you, he coaches hard.
He barks.
Yeah, yeah.
And you do.
I mean, you coach hard.
Is that did you ever, you always say that you watch plays.
and you kind of dabble and write stuff down.
If I'd never seen Andy Reid coach and I said, Sean, you say there's this,
I heard there's this guy in Kansas City and he's like, oh, he's special.
How do you look at Andy Reed?
As an offensive guy, how do you look at Andy in that offense and what you see that you're amazed by?
Well, with great respect, with great respect.
First off, you know there's a culture Andy's created there.
You can see it.
You can feel it.
There's also an offensive culture.
And what I mean by that is it pretty soon, all the assistance, and Monday is a big day for this,
they begin this advance work on the opponent, and they're looking for thoughts that they can give to Andy on Tuesday,
or Tuesday thoughts they can give to, you know, in those big meetings, can their play get to the list,
and then can it get from the list to the game, and then can it be called in the game,
and there's nothing better when you're a young assistant,
receiver coach, quarterback coach, any one of those positions.
And one of your ideas makes it down the road
and arrives in a game where it's a successful play.
Like that is a big deal.
And then there's a level of trust then.
And so, you know, we had that and had that,
or had that in New Orleans where,
and I used to say this all the time,
man, don't get, don't get discouraged if that idea we just didn't get to in this week's plan.
But it's contagious, and I think that Andy's a reason for that.
He creates this...
A competitive, creative.
And look, when I broke in, when I cut my teeth into this league in Philly, it was right before Andy got there.
So I was part of Ray Rhodes' staff.
I was with John Gruden, and we cut up Green Bay and Andy Reed's teams, you know,
and Holmgren's team.
We cut up Shanahan and said,
like every week we were studying those teams.
And so for the last 15 years,
Andy Reed was someone we were studying at Kansas City.
And even though we might be playing the New York Giants,
we would still be cutting up and looking at touchdown,
red zone, third down thoughts,
that week that took place from the chiefs.
Like, you have to stay that up to speed on it,
or you're just not keeping up with, you know, what's being served at the local pizza establishment.
I just know there's a line of people out there that want to eat there.
So I got to figure out what are they serving.
And that's part of working at your craft and taking an interest, putting your own spin on it.
And I think Andy's done that certainly as well as anyone.
And he, and I get back to these bloodlines in a little bit of our DNA.
He had Mike Holmgren who was that way.
and there was such a staff that came from Holmgren's group of coaches.
It's great.
It's unbelievable, right?
And they've gone on.
And so that type of stuff is a little contagious.
And I think that, man, I love watching their offense because I look for ideas.
That red zone Kelsey thing where they brought them over and they had the way they blocked it and pinched it.
And you're like, I haven't seen them use that play.
No, interesting.
And they just waited for the moment.
Yeah.
And anymore now, it's become a little.
Especially if you give Nance and Romo that game,
and he's in the red zone,
and he's got 5,000 plays down there inside the 10.
Right, right.
No, it's just become legendary.
And so that's when I sit back and be like,
all right, easy.
He's got eight plays now, all right?
He's got one day to work on him.
He's got two hours.
It's great seeing you, Sean.
Mondays, as always, our favorite time.
20, 25 minutes with Sean Payton.
Loved every second of it.
Thank you.
Outstanding.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do?
a little kill. Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but yeah, yeah, literally.
But just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS.
on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

J-Mack with the news.
No.
No. No. No. No.
Let's start with the New York Jets, Colin.
Should we go back to them, revisit them?
Let's do it.
103 total yards in the game.
I thought this was a misprint, but two yards of offense in the second half.
That's two full quarters.
They had two yards of offense.
Robert Sala had a pretty blunt description of
just how bad it was.
Can you put up in the second half, especially in the offense?
Seven possessions, only two total yards?
Um, no, it's dog.
Well, you know, he's, uh, he could have said a lot of things there.
He wants it to be known that he's really unhappy.
Um, so he's not hiding his emotions.
He's not covering up for anybody.
He's letting you know we should have won the game.
He's pointing right at his quarterback.
I've never had a dog in my life until we got one.
year and I had never picked up dog poop before.
You pick up dog poop.
All the time.
You know what dog, it's very warm.
That's what the Jets offense was.
A steaming pile of dog poo.
Yeah.
And I mean, I'm frustrated.
Ten punts, Colin, nine completions.
Nine completions.
I was on social media calling for the backup yesterday.
I know.
You lose your mind a little bit?
I mean, no, that's reality.
Dude, he's air mailing eight yard outs, Colin.
No, that ball in the flat.
He threw it directly.
I don't know if we have it.
I know.
threw it directly to a McCordie brother.
who somehow dropped the ball in his breadbasket.
I mean, look, Garrett Wilson was ticked off yesterday.
He's like, what's going on?
I know it was windy.
It was windy, and he had no run game.
Oh, yeah.
They didn't have rookie Breeze Hall in the backfield, so that's why he's stuck.
No, I'm saying is there was a lot of converging factors.
Belichick's brilliant, windy day, no run game.
So my thing was, if they come out of the game with one touchdown, no picks, 140 yards,
I would have given that an A.
because I think it was a really difficult situation.
Belichick, wind, no run game.
But to have 77 yards and, I mean, like, miss easy stuff, then you get down to a D.
That's what it is.
This came down to one word, him saying no for responsibility.
If he says, I was terrible, I will do better.
I know.
We're not freaking out today.
All right.
Moving on.
Travis Kelsey, monster game.
The hype was like, oh, Derwin James can shut down Travis Kelsey.
Did you see that nonsense on social media?
When Derwin James plays, Travis Kelsey doesn't do much.
Derwin James played six receptions, 115 yards, three touchdowns for Kelsey,
cooked Derwin on the final touchdown.
Well, they also do a really good job in the red zone.
They get him open.
I mean, this is a really, when you have a great quarterback and a great play designer
and your Travis Kelsey, I think it's a handful.
Derwin James is good.
Travis Kelsey is historically great.
Here's what Pat Mahomes said about his tight end.
I mean, obviously Travis, I mean, it's Travis.
He makes his greatest tie-in of all time.
He makes plays like that that win games.
He just competes.
At the end of the day, he's going to keep fighting until the very end.
And when you see that, I think it not only is impressive for him,
but it gets other guys going.
It shows that.
I mean, like I say, he's one of the best, not the best tight end of all time.
And he's coming to work every single day to get better.
And so that shows you, whenever you step in the facility,
you're like, man, I got to get the work.
If this guy's doing it, I have to be able to at least match that.
And so that leadership that he brings, as well as the play, he brings in the field,
it is special, and it takes a lot off my shoulders.
Yeah, that's fun to watch.
I love watching Chiefs games.
I would love a Chiefs fan to tell me, what does it feel like to have a quarterback like that?
Like, a franchise, you're set.
You're done.
You're good for the next decade.
We both took the Chargers and the points.
Chargers match up with them pretty well.
They really do.
I think a lot of it is that if you're Burrow and the Bengals match up, if you're going to play Mahomes,
you've got to be able to score quickly too.
Because you can't be one of these teams that has to have, like New England now needs 13 play drives to score.
You have to have the ability to score quickly on Kansas City.
Because they will, no matter how good your defense is, they'll have a three-play drive.
And so if you can answer that with an Allen or a Mahal or a Herbert or a Burrow,
it keeps you just can't bring an offense that has to go the length of the field
because I will say this, Kansas City with Spags, that defensive front is athletic.
I mean, they are all over Herbert in that game, and Herbert can move.
Listen, I know there's a bunch of meatballs who,
want to go after Justin Herber. Well, he didn't win another game. He was terrible again.
By the way, his starting tight end was out. His offensive line gave up five sacks.
Mike Williams just go down after one catch. Like, dude, can we just, the charges are going to be
fine. Justin Herbert is an excellent top six quarterback in the league. I'm glad we agree on this
coming. All right, we'll wrap up with the Philadelphia Eagles. Boy, they did not cover the spread
for me, six and a half. I mean, hell, they trail by 10 points in the fourth quarter.
Final drive was all Jalen Hertz. I don't know how close to you watch that drive. It was in a
11 play 75-yard drive, but it was a lot of Justin Hertz drops back and he's running.
That was literally how they were going to get home.
Didn't want to make a mistake.
He scores the rushing touchdown for the 17-16 win.
Not exactly a resounding vote of confidence for this team in the NFC.
Dallas Goddard is a big loss for that offense.
He's like a good blocking tight end and like a safety blanket for Hertz.
It didn't look overwhelming.
And now this is two straight weeks that the Eagles have looked a little suss.
Yeah.
I still really like their roster, so I think they're fine.
They would be less fine in the AFC.
But you know, it's interesting.
The NFC is a little better than we think now because Dallas is playing really well.
San Francisco, watch them tonight is getting healthy.
Philadelphia is a very competent team.
Seattle, have you looked at Seattle's schedule?
I'm sorry, there's not a lot of L's there.
There's not a lot of L's for the Seahawks.
I looked this morning.
Who are they playing this week?
A lot of Ws.
Seattle's getting to the playoffs.
You've got to come to terms with it.
They're getting in.
I'm not ready to concede the bed
I don't know that they're there
I'll say this though
you said cowboys
I'm just curious right now
rank on like a scale
top three in the NFC who you think's going
in the Super Bowl right now
San Francisco one
Philly 2
depends on where they play
home field
Dallas Seattle
whoever has the home
Vikings are out huh
oh no no you're right
Vikings 3
okay
no no no Dallas is above the Vikings
No, yes, they are.
They are.
Okay, but I think
should they be below the bucks?
Tampa's the sleeping giant.
I've already bet them this weekend.
When Tampa can run,
total game changer.
And their defense, getting healthier on the back end.
Yep.
