Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. For 1979, that was a big moment for me.
Starting point is 00:01:08 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year.
Starting point is 00:01:25 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.
Starting point is 00:01:51 This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast.
Starting point is 00:02:12 Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. You're listening to Foxxport's. Sports Radio. Oh, here we go. Live in L.A. Hour 2.
Starting point is 00:02:35 It's the herd wherever you may be, however you may be listening. IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1, Colin Wright, Colin Ron, a couple of minutes. J. Mack, joining us. So this is funny. So the Colts just named Jeff Saturday interim coach. And J. Mack, read what you read me. So he is the interim head coach. The Colts released this.
Starting point is 00:02:54 In a press release, they said that Jeff Saturday has consulted for the team for the last few years. Okay. And he was at training camp in 2022. So, you know, three months ago, he showed up at training camp, maybe gave a speech, talked to the coaches. Just Saturday, according to Field Yates over at ESPN, he is the first coach in NFL history with no coaching experience at the college or NFL level to be named a head coach. First ever. I wonder if Ursa didn't call him and say, listen, I'll give you a million bucks. Come in here, guide the ship. It's not the way. It's not the worst thing in the world if we lose the rest of our games. But no legit coach will take that. You come, do the best you can. You know, here's a big check and just do the best you can.
Starting point is 00:03:42 Erse, knowing he's not a coach. And they work hard, but they lose some games. Some? I'm not saying it's tanking. You try to win. It's a soft tank. Well, it says try to win. But I, folks, you think all the years I've been doing this, the, I'm going to write a book. when I no longer have to be on the air. I'll be like 80, 84, and I'll get somebody to help me write a book, and I'll tell you all the stories, and so many of them are about crazy owners in sports.
Starting point is 00:04:12 People have no idea what is like NBA, NFL baseball. The NFL, because it's so popular, these owners are crazy town. So what you're saying is billionaires are a little crazy. Well, some think the guy that just bought Twitter is. Who's that? Elon Musk. I refuse to say his name after the Twitter tangent he went on over the weekend.
Starting point is 00:04:33 That guy's losing it too. I told you you're going to Twitter Mountain. I'm not scaling that thing. I'm done. Tomorrow's election day, I think I'm going to be off social media all day. I told a buddy this weekend, I said, yeah, he's not going to be happy with the results tomorrow. I said, you may want to stay off for a couple days. I'll play monopoly with my kids.
Starting point is 00:04:48 There you go. Maybe some chess online. Oh, you mean have a life? That sounds good. Yeah. All right. Colin right. Colin wrong on a Monday.
Starting point is 00:04:54 Fire away. Where Colin was right? Fifth straight Packers loss. I told you. they're 27th in scoring behind Carolina. But I said, watch what happens when you don't put the time in with these young receivers in the offseason. As Jimmy Johnson just said, that is a bad decision. Aaron not willing to grow with all these young receivers in the off season.
Starting point is 00:05:19 It was going to take a different kind of Aaron, maybe a little less psychedelic tea and more time with teammates. This is a predictable. result where Colin was wrong. I thought the Rams would be a top five, six team in the league. I thought you'd go back to the Super Bowl, but the Alan Robinson move at wide receiver's been a bust. Core pieces returned. I thought it would look good, but it shows you they didn't keep Von Miller.
Starting point is 00:05:46 OBJs out. Andrew Whitworth retired. You can go from very good to, uh-oh, very quickly. Cluster injuries on the O line and wide receiver. Right now, they just don't have enough good offensive pieces. Where Colin was right? Well, the bills are what I said, they were last week, super talented, but too reliant on Josh Allen. They lack nuance and a consistent run game, and if you get them into close games, you got a shot.
Starting point is 00:06:18 Doesn't mean they can't win a close game, but it's not their DNA. They're looking for knockouts. Josh Allen, again, had to lead him in rushing. and when you have great corners and the Jets do, and they can shut down Stefan Diggs and the big plays consistently over the top and force this team to do other things, they get very limited, very fast.
Starting point is 00:06:42 Where Colin was wrong. Matt Eberfluse and the Bears, they may not have a winning record. I picked him for fourth and they may end up there, but they look like they've got their act together. Justin Fields looks like he's the guy. last three games, I see consistency in dynamic playmaking. I didn't love them hiring a defensive coach in an offensive era,
Starting point is 00:07:06 but Iber Fluse and Luke Getsey, the offensive coordinator, are using Justin Fields the way a smart coaching staff would. They may still finish in fourth, but I do feel like in fairness, I thought they were going to be awful, unwatchable, and a reeling mess, and they're really, really getting it together. Where Colin was right? Been a Brian Kelly fan from day one. I don't even get the Brian Kelly critics.
Starting point is 00:07:33 This is the fifth job he's taken over and they've won almost instantly. Do your homework. Just watch the games. Go to Wikipedia. Where is he ever failed? You knew he was going to win at LSU and you knew it was going to be quick. Now, it's quicker than I thought. I thought he needed at least one entire recruiting class and at least year two middle of the season.
Starting point is 00:07:53 But they beat Bama and here's the game winning conversion. here we go snap to daniels sprint out throw to the right caught right corner of the end zone mason taylor tigertie two third i'm sorry he's not cool i know the internet loves cool he's a great not a good he's a top three or four college football coach in america today he's absolutely in the sabin class he just never had sabin's athletes at ls u or bama and now he does where Colin was wrong. Golden States got the third worst record in the West. They haven't won a road game yet.
Starting point is 00:08:41 Steph Curry is amazing, but they do look tired defensively. I didn't think the Draymond Green thing would be anything other than a galvanizing point. I didn't think it would be disruptive. And I don't know that it is, but Jordan Poole hasn't been as good as we thought. They're not playing defense. They can't win on the road. They're just not very good right now. They're sloppy.
Starting point is 00:09:03 Is it some of it fatigue? You go through a long, older players, long playoff run. Could be, but you've got to be able to beat, you know, the bad teams in the NBA with this lineup, and they can't. Where Colin was right? Y'all bailed on Cincinnati. I'm here to tell you right now without Jamar Chase. If they run the football like that, nobody's beating them in the AFC. And I mean Kansas City and Buffalo.
Starting point is 00:09:29 This team is excellent. They just don't have a lot of household names. On defense, Joe Burrow is top five in passer rating. I think he's in top two or three in completion percentage. Just because they laid an egg last Monday night. We said it at the time. Good teams lay eggs. Kansas City went to Indy this year and had a special team's meltdown and lost.
Starting point is 00:09:51 Don't let that define a team. They are excellent. And I think Cincinnati this morning to me is neck and neck with Kansas City and Buffalo and Philadelphia for best team in the National Football League. Where Colin was right? I told you I didn't get Clemson. I just don't get them. I've watched them three times now.
Starting point is 00:10:11 I don't get it. They're kind of one-dimensional. They've had to bench their starting quarterback. Notre Dame ran all over the Tigers. Listen, I've watched every single top 10 team. I get all of them. TCU and Oregon, UCLA, USC, Georgia, Tennessee, even though Tennessee lost.
Starting point is 00:10:29 I get all of them. I don't get Clemson. I think they're a pretty. program in a very, very weak conference, the ACC that beats up on bad teams. And a lot of it is Davoswini has built a really big brand. So we're giving them the benefit of the doubt. But this morning, the PAC 12 is way better than the ACC. I don't even think that's debatable.
Starting point is 00:10:53 And I think Oregon, USC and UCLA would blow Clemson off the map. I think Michigan would, Ohio State would, Georgia would, Tennessee would, Alabama would, LSU would. I don't buy Clemson. Maybe they develop into something. They're not that now and should not be considered a borderline playoff team. All right, good stuff. Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun.
Starting point is 00:11:18 One of my favorite things about sports, you know, is the fact that it's not scripted. And I'm from the Pacific Northwest. I am just my sister's texting me during the Seahawk game. She grew up, didn't like sports. It's shocking. I watched that Seattle, Arizona game, Vegas cannot figure out the Seahawks. Vegas can't. I mean, think about this.
Starting point is 00:11:41 Vegas, the two times they played Arizona, liked Arizona. And if you watch both those games, I watch both those games, it's not close. Seattle is absolutely better than Arizona, and I do not think it's close. If Gino Smith didn't have a red zone mistake, and you know what happens, he almost had two, he almost got a bad bounce, they blow them out. So I think Seattle is one of those where Vegas is caught off guard. I don't remember a player like Gino Smith in my life watching football, that he pops as a quarterback in year, what, eight?
Starting point is 00:12:15 I mean, it's just the craziest thing. And it does go to show. The Jets and the Seahawks had the two best drafts. And you insert four or five or six starters who are really, really good out of college. I mean, Soss Gardner has completely changed. the defense for the Jets. They can just go take the number one receiver out of a game. They had a good pass rush last year.
Starting point is 00:12:35 They have a good pass rush. But now it's like Stefan Diggs. Sosco over there. Let's take him out. It changes everything. And Seattle found a corner in the fifth round and to tackle. Kenneth Walker at running back is unbelievable. He led college football.
Starting point is 00:12:51 I believe at one point he led, maybe he finished this. He led college football at Michigan State yards after contact. Kenneth Walker is an unlawful. unbelievable running back in the NFL. He's already a top five running back to me. Big, strong, burst, runover guys. Playmakers, speed, young, athletic. It's such a Pete Carroll team.
Starting point is 00:13:10 This is why Pete was a great college coach. He's really a teacher and a motivator. And I mean, USC with Pete Carroll would just play downhill. Big, fly out of the tunnel. Hair on fire. It's just, I don't even know what, if I can, if there's anything, like Seattle. I mean, like you could say, well, what about Cincinnati last year?
Starting point is 00:13:33 But we all loved Joe Burrow. We thought Joe Burrow was unbelievable. We loved their weapons. I mean, Cincinnati surprised us, but there was a lot of, yeah, Burroughs amazing. The weapons are unbelievable. Like, you watched it and you thought, oh, it's kind of interesting. Gino Smith was a bust and then a backup in what we perceived as the toughest division in football. Then they, and they did something that Seahawks haven't done in the last six, seven years.
Starting point is 00:13:59 They completely hit a home run in the draft. It's just great coach. It's such a Pete Carroll team. So young. I just fun watching them play. By the way, they're doing this without one of their best defensive players. Jamal Adams, who they got from the Jets via trade. One of the highest paid safeties in the league.
Starting point is 00:14:18 He's been out all season. They're doing it without him. I don't want to say when he comes back next year, how good are they going to be? But I'll tell you, who was big yesterday? Noah Fant came over in that Russell Wilson trade. Noah Fant was huge. We knew he was a good vertical. Not much of a blocker, I don't think, but he's more of a vertical tight end.
Starting point is 00:14:33 And Shelby Harris, the defensive lineman they got, that was kind of a, you know, unless you really follow some analytics, you wouldn't know much about Shelby Harris. He's been great for them up front. So they got two high-end starters and all these picks. Was Shelby Harris a throw-in in the Russell Wilson? Yeah, I mean, but I'd heard of Shelby Harris, but I'm not sitting watching interior line play for the Broncos. And he just, for his size, he moves really well.
Starting point is 00:14:57 Yeah. So you know I was on the Cardinals yesterday. When Gino threw that pick six, I'm sitting there, all right, that's the Gino Smith I knew for years in the Jets. Colin, he responded. He just calmed down, 75 yards down the field, touchdown. I was like, damn, he's all grown up. This is what makes, you don't see this story much in baseball or the NBA. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:15 Where you're like awful, considered a tanking. What if the Utah Jazz now were like literally running away at the trading deadline, led their division? You'd be, because we think of Utah. It's got some players, but, you know, they smack the Lakers on now Friday. Boy, LeBron. I think LeBron looks old. He's starting to look old. Lakers, there's some chatter about your Anthony Davis take.
Starting point is 00:15:34 It's starting to gain some steam online. Anthony Davis did not talk to the media last night after they lost. It's interesting. My Anthony Davis take, which I was so sad, barely slept. I was skeptical about it. I'll be honest with it. The world was. And now apparently I'm being backed by a very formidable source.
Starting point is 00:15:52 A.D. may be on the trade block. Oh, boy. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeart radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:16:12 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:16:37 I don't care which I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clipper Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement

Do you remember when Diana Ross
Starting point is 00:17:39 double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jek. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:17:59 Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes.
Starting point is 00:18:23 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far far away, such as the biology,
Starting point is 00:18:53 of ton-tons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Sean Payton time. We get him for 20, 25 minutes on Mondays. We love having him stop by, and there's so many things to talk about. Nine of the 10 playoff wins in the Saints history have come in the Sean Peyton era, and he's just enjoying life by the water, somewhere undisclosed location,
Starting point is 00:19:23 in Los Angeles. So I will say this. I want to start with Pete Carroll because I was critical of them in the offseason. They'd had four or five drafts that I thought were a little reckless. I thought the defense, I thought they got a little arrogant. Some of it could have been Russell, Pete, but I was really, really brutal. Then there are times I thought, you know, they're going to draft a quarterback, get it right. I don't even know what the precedent is to a quarterback hitting in his eighth or ninth year, Gino Smith. But as somebody in the league, are you surprised at what you're seeing
Starting point is 00:19:59 from this incredibly young team with Gino Smith? Yeah, I am. And certainly I was skeptical. It's fun to watch those guys now. And it's fun to watch Pete because he looks like he's having more fun. Yeah, he does. But more specifically when you're watching Gino,
Starting point is 00:20:19 We've seen it happen maybe twice, at least that I can recall. Rich Gannon was a 30-something better player. Good call. Good call. That's right. He was a 30-something better player. Trent Green was a 30-something better player, and he got injured. So it's very unusual, especially when you look at all the rosters.
Starting point is 00:20:45 In that division. Gino's been with, though. I mean, you know, and then my wife is from West Virginia. And so, you know, at the start of the year, when I'm skeptical on this, I hear about it every week as they win. So it's, I don't want to say it's personal for me, but it's a credit to those guys, and they have drafted well. We were talking earlier when you hit in a draft on that many young players,
Starting point is 00:21:12 and you look at the contracts they're playing on, it's fantastic. Tell me the story you told me off air about parcels in the draft because it's so true. Well, all of us and the fans that love watching the draft, and it's a fantastic event. Thursday night, it's prime time. So much fun. We spend 95% of our discussion, generally speaking, social media, all the news sources, and on only about 5% or 10% of the draft. It's the first 20 picks.
Starting point is 00:21:41 Right. Maybe the first round. And yet, your better drafts. you know, have Camara in the third round. They have Trey Hendrickson in the fourth round. They have Ryan Ramcheck as the second first round pick. Marcus Williams. You and Mickey Loomis hit some home runs later round.
Starting point is 00:22:02 R.O6 draft. And it becomes really what you build your team around. But past Reggie Bush in the first round, which was a great selection for, is Roman Harper in the second played 14 years. Jari Evans in the fourth will be a pro football. Hall of Famer. Rob Ninkevich in the 5th. Oh, my God. We just didn't have the vision form. I told him he was going to be
Starting point is 00:22:23 a long snapper. He went to the Patriots and won two Super Bowls as an outside linebacker. Zach Streif and Marcus Colston in the 7th. Wow! So, um, I think that'll that'll pay dividends for Seattle
Starting point is 00:22:39 in the next five years. Oh, no quite. I mean, first of all, they just found their tackles for a decade perhaps. Yeah, unusual. And, and, And look, it's a group of people. It's Pete, it's Snyder. Those guys have been together for a while. And most importantly, it's identifying the vision as to what you have for the player
Starting point is 00:22:57 and being on the same page. It's personal for me. My sister doesn't like sports, but she, Russell Wilson made her fall in love with the Seahawks. So I get text every Sunday if the Seahawks are winning. So for me, and the power went out, so they were listening in their truck on the radio. All right. I want to go to, listen, you always said, I think that you said the best, wins or when you play poorly and win because you can coach them hard the following week.
Starting point is 00:23:21 Just a lot you can get out of that. How about a good loss? To me, Chicago this year is about identifying what can Justin do. And I watched the last two or three weeks and I'm like, you got to feel pretty good in film session today in Chicago. Yeah. And remember two and a half weeks ago a Thursday night game where they had a bad loss at home to the Redskins or excuse me, the commanders. We were just talking about Washington.
Starting point is 00:23:46 Thursday night the Bears lost, and everyone watching was fairly critical of the offense and not doing the things that fields can do well. He didn't really have many run opportunities. And so there was a lot of that piling on. And the very next week at New England, it was like, in credit Matt, Iber Fluss and the whole staff, they had a little bit of a buy week, if you will, to readjust. And so I think we've seen, we're seeing the byproducts now of that, that little buy week that they had and the confidence coming off of the New England went on the road, especially for a young quarterback. And so, look, when you have a player like that, it's very common for you to, hey, one assistant coach is going to cut up the Ravens film. One's going to cut up the Eagles film. Finding like offenses and like, skill sets that you might find an idea that applies to him.
Starting point is 00:24:49 We do that all the time, not just a quarterback. So I think that's one team. And the other was Tennessee a little bit. Like if you said there's, you don't want to lose. Tennessee was the one seed last year. So it's completely different. But man, they played Kansas City pretty tough last night. Let me tell you something.
Starting point is 00:25:07 They didn't have a second half first down. Yeah, it was impressive. I will say this. They bullied them a little bit. You know what? the first play of the game, that tied end play, and he ran over eight chiefs. And I thought, oh, this is what they're going to do. They're going to say, okay, you're the pretty team.
Starting point is 00:25:22 We're the tough team. Right. You know, Rabel's fascinating as a former player. I always feel like when I watch his teams, that his physical presence matters. He is a player. And I think when he goes and barks at the players to be tougher and be stronger and we're in this physically together, I think that there's such a buy-in. Whenever I watch Tennessee, I'm like,
Starting point is 00:25:44 Is there a coach in the league that has done more without having like the star quarterback and the star? What do you think about him as a coach? Yeah, I think he's very good. And we undervalue how many years in New England. Just think about I get to be around Belichick for eight seasons. And just relative to an education that later I'm going to draw back on when I'm a coach. And so all the details. that Bill maybe harped on when because Brable was a part of all of that.
Starting point is 00:26:19 And so I have a ton of respect for him. And look, I would say he's a friend and someone who I think is extremely talented. And, you know, I kind of had the same vision when I was talking with Detroit in the interview process for Dan Campbell. I said, this guy, I think, has a chance to be an offensive version of what Vrable is for the Titans. Players will go through a wall for him. Yeah, and there's a stature, and he's a former player, and he's a tough guy.
Starting point is 00:26:49 Tough guy. You know, those would be the two if we had one of these MMA deals. Who else is in there? Tomlin would be on the outside. He would have been 10 years ago. But am I missing someone? No, you're right. There's a physical component.
Starting point is 00:27:06 No teams play harder than Detroit and Tennessee. Yeah. And so I thought last night, man, it was, there were two different styles. And that was impressive. It was. Because quietly in that division, we tend to lose track of them. Like, you lose track of their record and their wins.
Starting point is 00:27:27 Well, college footballs is big down there as pro. Yeah. We don't get the television. They don't have the same ratings. And so between Houston and Tennessee and Indianapolis and Jacksonville, you know, I think it's tougher. So, I mean, elephant in the room is that you're going to get calls when the season's over or you will now. We all know.
Starting point is 00:27:48 There's no reason. Sean, you're the very rare great coach on the market. Not since Andy Reid. Has there been a guy you're like, yep, you'll win really fast and you'll have a chance really fast. So you're that guy. I'm not looking for inside information. But what I'm looking for here is I want to make sure if you do leave Fox, you take the right job. Because I've said this before about coaches.
Starting point is 00:28:09 I've had NBA coaching friends where I've said, you guys are not taking good jobs. You're better than the job. So I look at Indianapolis. And for years, I thought it was a stable environment. And this morning, I'm like, the hell's going on? If I'm a coach, I mean, it feels like Ursay now runs the whole franchise. Am I wrong? It's hard to tell from afar.
Starting point is 00:28:34 I think this, well, a week or two ago, they fired their offensive coordinator, who I don't even think was called. calling the plays. I think Frank's been the play caller. I'm going to go back a little further and say they've never recovered from Andrew Luck leaving the building. You're right. And when you think about that investment, that was the first time we heard in football this like suck for luck or, you know, in other words, we need this pick. And so just pick one of these guys that were highly drafted or maybe the first pick of the draft or second or third that are successful and just pretend that they just said, hey, you know what, I'm going to retire.
Starting point is 00:29:12 Like, that can set a group back. But it's news to me, it's a surprise to me, and then the news that Jeff Saturday is going to be their head coach. He's never been a coach anywhere. It's a surprise. And so you never really can tell until you open the doors in some of these buildings because they're all run differently. It's, you know, universities are run in a similar fashion in the Big Ten or in the SEC.
Starting point is 00:29:38 But in the NFL, That's fascinating. Yeah, they're all independent businesses, and they're different, each and every one of them. Based on the personality of the guy owning it. Yeah, ownership, the city, the tradition, and we're living in an era where there's a lot of ownership. I don't want to say flexibility, but there's new owners coming into this league. When I first got into coaching in the NFL, I'd say more than 50% of the owners made their fortune with their football teams. and it was the Mara family and the Roonies and, you know, the hunts.
Starting point is 00:30:14 And there's more and more now are, I would say, clearly the majority are private business success stories that have purchased the team. And so what's going on in India? It's hard to tell, really, unless you're in the building. But certainly, and here's the thing, that was one of the teams. This is, this is like me trying to play fantasy football. But I saw them having a pretty good season. I thought Matt was going to be an improvement for them. I picked him to win the division.
Starting point is 00:30:43 They've got a runner. They've got a good defense. And it's like, what happened? You know, and there are a lot of things that happened. So as Seattle has been a surprise on one side of the room, Indy's been the opposite. Yeah. We just spent five minutes on the AFC South. We have to move off that division.
Starting point is 00:31:01 It's boring. Okay. Now let's go to Josh Allen. I think I talked to Jimmy earlier. When you have a great player, there's not many, like literally superstar. And you're a quarterback whisper. So you have this great player and you're very reliant on him. But when I watch them, I think, and the Jets matched up well because they're so good at corner,
Starting point is 00:31:24 we're going to take out the big play. Yeah. Run the ball. And they don't. So I've said with Sean McDermott, I don't doubt he's a good coach, but this is four years now. They haven't developed a run game. it's hard for me to consider them a Super Bowl team when I see Philly run and yesterday Cincinnati run and I can see Kansas City run.
Starting point is 00:31:42 I don't know if you can win a Super Bowl being this reliant on the big play, can you? Yeah, well, two things. There's certainly a style in which they play offensively. And so I'm going to use the term RPO and that's a run pass option. Right. And so if I send in an RPO, I have to be willing to send in. a runner pass. In other words, whatever comes of it. But, you know, in our league, there are times and more than you think where I just want to frickin' run. Now, that requires me to leave the
Starting point is 00:32:18 eighth defender free or the ninth defender free. There are times where most of the time we're getting a loaded box. We're getting a safety dropping down. But you wanted to run it. But I still have to find a way to run the ball, even in an eight-man front. I see some similarities though with, you remember the, the, the, the, uh, the Mike Holmgren and Brett Farr, are we done with the rocket balls? You know, and, and far, I, I see some of that with Josh. The, the, the confidence. Yes. In this arm, sideline to sideline, vertically down the field, just like with Brett. And so Holmgren had to come to terms with him and say. And yet there's always going to be, you know,
Starting point is 00:33:05 each day you go to work, you might have to shout sometimes. And I think that same thing probably exists. Not in a, I watch from afar, and I think, I do think Sean's a great coach, and their defense has been playing. And it was a tough loss, but it also tells me a little bit about the Jets. And I would say this, much like all we've heard about is the NFC East and the strength of the East, the Cowboys, the Eagles, certainly, and the Giants. the same with the AFC East.
Starting point is 00:33:36 And if I said to you in describing the AFC East as being really strong, I don't need the Patriots record, by the way, either. Because I'm going to go by the Bills, Dolphins, and Jets. Would you have ever guessed that? Well, I liked the Bills and Miami. I thought the Jets were a bottom four team. But that's where we're at right now. That's great.
Starting point is 00:33:57 That's why the league is so amazing. That division is good. I watch Mike McDaniel and Miami. go back to Miami because I gave Chicago love for losing. So let's talk Miami. When I watch McDaniel sometimes, I think to myself, Bobby Bowden once told me this, the late great Florida State coach. Sure. He said, I would stay up on the East Coast. He goes, I knew all the other coaches went to bed. I'd stay up, watch Oregon and steal their plays. He goes, because I knew nobody in my conference did. And I watched Mike McDaniel in the movement and what they're doing with Tua. And I'm like,
Starting point is 00:34:28 I think if I as a coach, I'd steal some plays. I think he is real. What do you see from McDaniel? No, I see the same. And I see a great pedigree. Obviously, I don't know Mike, but his history. Sometimes we can't control who we had an opportunity to work for. You take a job. You need a job. Sure.
Starting point is 00:34:46 And then if you're fortunate, you work for some people like Parcells or, like for me. And Mike, I think, has had some of those really, really good influences. And you see his spin on an offense now. And here's what we would do yearly at the Saints, for instance. We would pay attention to who we're jealous of. Who's doing things that are uniquely different? Oh, that's cool. And who are doing things that we think are cutting edge?
Starting point is 00:35:19 And that would be a study not only, it's every week we're cutting that team up. Somebody's doing something that you guys like. Every week we're looking at it. And we're going to present it Wednesday night when we're looking at third down, if it's a third down thought. We're going to present it Thursday night when we're looking at red zone, if it's a red zone thought, and if it's short yardage goal line. So we are going to, even though, let's say, we're playing the Atlanta Falcons on a Sunday,
Starting point is 00:35:45 we are going to be watching other tape that may not be Atlanta, and it's not necessarily opponent-driven, it's idea-driven. And you like some of Miami's ideas. Yeah, absolutely. It'd be one of the tape. we'd study. They'd be on the weekly study list. And there'd be a few that you kick out of there too
Starting point is 00:36:05 now. You can only look at a few and so who's doing things creatively, they would certainly be one. So if you have, you're dealing with young, often millionaires. Some are highly emotional. Michael Thomas, an emotional player. And so you don't coach
Starting point is 00:36:21 everybody the same. And so today, and again, it's our weekly Aaron Rogers comment. Aaron's an emotional guy. He's rich, he's single, he's going to do what he wants, he doesn't like motion. So today, you walk in and it's five straight losses. I thought there was a moment before the game. The CBS, I think it was CBS cameras, took a shot of him. It was NBC cams, my bad. I'm watching on a screen, and they took a picture of him. He just looked like he was in a bad mood. Trading deadline.
Starting point is 00:36:51 They didn't get anybody. What's the discussion today? He's rich. He's smart. He's been around. What is the discussion today with Aaron Rogers to get him back? To pause. No, listen, I think, look, it's the immediate challenge in front of you. I said this to you earlier. So I think this is my fifth or sixth show. And I don't know that it's coincided with every one of their losses, but I like how you guys will email me.
Starting point is 00:37:26 You'll email me potential topics. And I like the idea that we're not really, much of this is not, yeah, it flows. And we're good with whatever it is. And I feel like every week, we have an Aaron. We have an Aaron Green Bay. And I kind of feel like this is the last one.
Starting point is 00:37:42 Yeah. I'm not suggesting like next week's mailer here, but I'm just saying, this is what they are? I think this has been, it's, I think we've, and we've repeated this, not Mondays, but we've seen Sundays repeat itself. And right now they're not a good team.
Starting point is 00:37:58 That's right. And can they be a better team? Absolutely. I'm sure they feel like they haven't played their best football. But the body language, the games, and look, losing is awful. Because there's so much that goes into it, it's bad for the players, it's bad for the coaches. There's nothing worse. And the fear of failure is a great motivator.
Starting point is 00:38:20 It's probably the number one motivator for any competitive athlete or coach is that the idea of not winning is really. really powerful. But that fear of failure is, is, yeah. And so Mondays after a loss, I mean, you know, you go through just because you know all the energy that went into it. And here you have to recalibrate by noon today. All right, you deal with the game that you just played. And somewhere by lunchtime or one o'clock, you're flipping the script and right away you're on to their next challenge. Who's their next challenge? Dallas. Oof. Oh, exactly.
Starting point is 00:38:58 Right. Off rast, off extra rest. They're a little better than Detroit. Yeah, it's an oof. That's what you say at lunch today. That's the game. And so I think Green Bay will play them well in Green Bay. Okay.
Starting point is 00:39:12 I think they will. Well, let's end on a good note. Yeah. Minute left. I like the Saints tonight. What say you? Well, I do. I would say this.
Starting point is 00:39:24 And I've been a big part of this now. In other words, we haven't played the Ravens well. And let me back up by saying that. It's not because it's been Lamar Jackson that whole time. John's done a great job. I think we won our last match in, if I'm not mistaken, in Baltimore on a Sunday night, the best kicker that's ever kicked in the history of our league missed a PAT, hit the upright. And we turned around and I think we won 1716, and we like sprinted to the locker room.
Starting point is 00:39:53 But I would say defensively, defensively, it's going to be important for New Orleans to have some answers for some of this QB run because that's something that historically we've not been really good at. And so for Dennis and their staff defensively, early in this game, we'll see how they defend Lamar and some of the design runs. They're still a little nicked up, but it's an important game for them.
Starting point is 00:40:21 horizontally or vertically is the only way they get in the playoffs, right? They're not going to get in as a wild card in that division. It's got to be Tampa Bay, whoever's in the NFC South. It's only a one-team playoff division. And the Saints have played the Bucks, great. Yeah, so the Bucks aren't the, it's the schedule coming forward here, and you have to win the South to get in the postseason. Yeah, this feels like a huge, huge game for New Orleans tonight.
Starting point is 00:40:47 I think it will be. Monday night football. And look, prime time. It feels different there. Yeah, they've been really good on prime time. Yeah, they have. Really good. You guys were always a good big game team.
Starting point is 00:40:57 Yeah. That was that Rams game when you didn't get that call. Other than that, did I bring up a bag? You just said we were going to end on a good note. You're fibbing right now. I mean, holy cow. I just popped right into this small brain of mine. What a pleasure.
Starting point is 00:41:11 Sean Payton, it's my favorite 20, 30 minutes of the week. We take a break. It's the herd. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Sports Radio, FS1, and the I Heart Radio app. Hey, what's up, everybody? Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app,

Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you're going to be. can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:43:52 I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:44:17 We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast.
Starting point is 00:44:41 Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of taun tons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to Stuff to Bole Your Mind on the iHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. I don't know if I could top Sean Payton.
Starting point is 00:45:16 Folks, if you only heard the Sean Payton, after the segment, the stories are, the stories are unbelievable. Jimmy Johnson's got a new book. Sean should write one later. You know, I really like being on the show, but if he takes a head coaching job and brings me on in some fashion, I'm going to have to leave here. You know, I like Sean Payton every time he comes out.
Starting point is 00:45:35 If I just get the stories, I'll leave here. Yeah, some of this stuff. Oh, my God. But we do have a great story to open with this, you know, this plucky football team in New York, the Jets. Yeah. They pull off one of the biggest upsets of the NFL season. 11.5 point underdogs, I think they closed as.
Starting point is 00:45:49 Take it down the bills 20 to 17. Listen, we said Jack Wilson can't play from behind. They were down 14-3. Very impressive stuff. Robert Zala, very fired up about the rally. You know, I know a lot of people are going to be surprised, right? I don't think there's a person surprised in the locker room. Like I said, we don't flinch.
Starting point is 00:46:08 I think we're too young to flinch. And just a belief, you know, just in preparation that we believe we can we can win and if we just go 60 minutes. And like I've said it before, our three preseason wins were in the fourth quarter. And there's just a belief that if you just give us time or you just, if we have a play to play, we're going to treat that play like a championship moment. We're going to do our best, do our best. And I feel like they've got that mindset.
Starting point is 00:46:35 Like the Seahawks, a lot of young players have a huge impact. Those young players don't know what they don't know. They're fun to watch. Seattle and the Jets hit high. home runs in the draft and they've got four or five, six guys, rookies playing real time and you can see the energy for both teams. There's a belief with these young teams. Yeah. One fun stat from the game. So the Jets blitz Josh Allen twice. That's it. Well, your D-line's great. Incredible. And they still sacked him five times.
Starting point is 00:47:05 Eight quarterback hits. The rookie out of FSU Jermaine Johnson, he had been hurt for a couple weeks, came back. He was all over Allen. Well, that's why they moved that defensive lineman. They traded him to Denver. Martin. Martin, yeah. But if you watch the final play, Josh Allen tries to uncork this bomb. Jermaine Johnson kind of pulled back and was waiting to,
Starting point is 00:47:23 he was like spying Josh Allen to see where he was going, got the pressure on him. Listen, the Jets defense has been incredible. Colin, this is a fun story. I don't want to think too far ahead because there's still a lot of football left, but they're legitimately in the playoff race. They've got to buy and then the Patriots. And bigger than anything.
Starting point is 00:47:39 Can you just enjoy the moment? Are they going to be in the herd hierarchy tomorrow? They've never, did you tell the audience, they've never made the herd hierarchy in the six years you've been doing the show. I don't think so. I don't think so. Tune in tomorrow, folks. Second hour, I think it is, right? Okay.
Starting point is 00:47:54 Next story, not as interesting, but Joe Mixon had a nice day yesterday. Five touchdowns. 153 yards on the ground, another 58 through the air. Mixon's so good. He's a stud. Mixon himself outscored the Panthers. They could do nothing. I cannot believe I bet the Carolina Panthers yesterday.
Starting point is 00:48:09 Just an embarrassment. They've now destroyed the Falcons and the Panthers at home. So if you're a bottom feeder facing Cincinnati, look out. They can take down some teams. That sounds like a slight. You just look a shot at them. Well, yeah. I mean, they're beating up on the dregs of the league.
Starting point is 00:48:26 They're not beating up on them. They're destroying. They're pummeling them. The jets cannot pummel anyone. Well, yes. Packers, I'm sorry. I'm just telling you, if this is what Cincinnati's run game looks like, you might as well buy those tickets to Arizona for the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:48:40 You know what's frustrating. Super Bowl. Let's slow down. I was on the Panthers because they had the number 10 run defense in the league, and they get trucked by Joe Mixing like they didn't show up. I don't know, weird. Now, Baltimore loses tonight, Colin, looking good for your Bengals. I like the Saints tonight. I did take the Saints on the Money Line as well.
Starting point is 00:48:59 Now, this third story is just starting to percolate online. What? Colin's going to love it, obviously. So the Lakers lose yesterday to the Cavs. Lakers had a great start. Anthony Davis looked good early. And then it kind of fell apart. And Anthony Davis was not getting the ball in the second half.
Starting point is 00:49:14 Two shots. Two shot attempts for your franchise center in the entire second half. And? So the Cavs win, and afterward, Anthony Davis says, I'm not talking to the media. Uh-oh. So we have the Lakers at 2 and 7. AD not getting shots in the fourth quarter. 30 seconds left.
Starting point is 00:49:32 And he doesn't want to talk to the media. Bill Simmons said something. Didn't you hear that? Bill Simmons has speculated that Anthony Davis was on the trade market. Thank you. Listen, he's not a reporter, but we know he's written a book on the NBA. He's absolutely a reporter. Bill Simmons is a reporter.
Starting point is 00:49:48 He's a reporter for this show. He says stuff and I steal. You're just excited. You're just excited that you were right on Anthony Day. Look at this fist pump. That's two straight hours of fist pumps. Hour three next. It's the herd.
Starting point is 00:49:59 Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, S&L's Mikey Day and headwriter, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Starting point is 00:50:36 Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:51:01 A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me. Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.
