Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
Starting point is 00:00:19 help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's
Starting point is 00:00:46 superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. For 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English.
Starting point is 00:01:12 Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:01:36 A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it.
Starting point is 00:02:00 Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. It's the herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio and FS1.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Joy Taylor is joining me. So the number one pick in the draft, Trayvon Walker, Georgia, right? Yes. I'm just going to throw this out there. So Jacksonville has no history of divisory. developing players. Now, they've drafted some great ones, Jalen Ramsey. They have no history of developing players that had too much chaos. Green Bay has, Baltimore has, Pittsburgh has, the 49ers have. New England. Rams have. Jacksonville doesn't have the culture that's
Starting point is 00:03:19 trustable to develop a player. So they draft a player that needs to be developed. Oh, by the way, who's going to develop them? Their defensive coordinator, Mike Caldwell. He's never been a coordinator. So he's going to be trying to figure out how the hell to be a coordinator. And you're going to have, if I'm Jacksonville, I just go get the most productive college player. You're asking a franchise that doesn't develop in a defensive coordinator who's never been a defensive coordinator to take a guy who a lot of people thought was like during the season, the fourth best defensive player. He's a developing player. Now, if he goes to Pittsburgh and Baltimore and Green Bay, I have much different feeling about that.
Starting point is 00:03:57 but you are what you've done. Jacksonville doesn't develop. That's not what they do. They occasionally draft great guys. They're not always a terrible drafting team. But that was strange. The other team, Joy, both the Jets and the Giants, I thought had, you know, they got a lot of good players,
Starting point is 00:04:17 mostly because they had a lot of picks up at the top of the draft. I mean, Sauce Gardner, the corner of the Jets got, I thought was the best corner. Garrett Wilson, the wide receiver, Ohio State. I thought was the best wide receiver. So, you know, but here's my thing. The Jets and the Giants have weird ownership situations. I don't know if either one of their coaches can coach.
Starting point is 00:04:37 I have real doubts about Robert Sala of the Jets. I don't know if either of their quarterback can play. Daniel Jones, I don't think can and good luck with the Jets kid, Zach Wilson. So what's it matter? I mean, seriously, the Jets and the Giants have a bunch of first round picks I liked. I like a lot of their first round picks. What's it matter? This sport is so much about owner and GM.
Starting point is 00:05:01 And if that's a mess, then you need a Joe Burrow to save you. These are edge rushers and, you know, receivers. And you didn't draft a star quarterback. So outside of the baseball teams, the sports franchises in New York are mostly awful. And the reason is they have lousy front offices and lousy owners. They have some good players. But, I mean, the Jets and the Giants have not had winning seasons. winning seasons in six years.
Starting point is 00:05:28 And the Jets easily have the fourth best roster in their division. Easily. Miami is upgraded massively on offense. And the Giants, to me, right now, have the fourth best quarterback in their division. Joy, how does that usually work in the NFL? Badly. Not great in a bad old line. Outside of Andrew Thomas, they don't like their offensive lines.
Starting point is 00:05:49 So, you know, it's like sometimes I, you know, I don't know. Yes, I thought the Jets had a really good night. But if the quarterback can't play from BYU, you, none of it matters. They'll just be dudes. They'll just be guys. So, you know, and right now, we feel very lucky in Los Angeles because we have
Starting point is 00:06:11 mostly Steve Balmer and Les Sneed and the Dodgers ownership group. In Los Angeles, we're very lucky. We have great owners. And we have stupendous front office executive wings. That's why our teams are all good. Yes, we have a bunch of good players, but they have stability, they have good owner, they got a lot of revenue, they have momentum, they have excellent cultures. So, you know, some of this draft stuff is just like, well, if Daniel Jones can't play,
Starting point is 00:06:39 you're going to be going draft to the quarterback next year and probably, you know, giving up picks to get him. So you're going to bring the quarterback in and not have all the picks you need. That's why Pittsburgh's so great for Kenny Pickett. They didn't have to give that anything up. He's a four-year starter. They got four years of tape. He was in the wait room. He was in the building.
Starting point is 00:06:58 Like, good organizations. It's funny how often good players fall to them. Isn't it funny with Baltimore? They got the best safety and the best center. Didn't have to move. Two starters. Good programs. I mean, Iowa, Notre Dame put a lot of guys in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:07:15 T.J. Hushmanzada is joining us now, 11 years in the National Football League. What did you make of, um, So Lamar Jackson's not happy. They got rid of his receiver. And my takeaway is I kind of trust the Ravens to do what they do. You know, you've been with the Ravens. They know what they're doing. So, I mean, my Lamar thing is, all right, no quarterback's totally happy.
Starting point is 00:07:38 What did you make of it? It's more of a personal thing with Lamar in Hollywood than it is a professional thing. They build a friendship. They both come from Florida. and you hate to see a friend leave. But Hollywood wanted to leave the system that is the Baltimore Ravens. And let's be honest, the system is Lamar Jackson. Lamar Jackson is the system in Baltimore.
Starting point is 00:08:04 And so he wanted to be a better player professionally, and he had to leave Lamar. And so you can say that's an indictment on Lamar, because Hollywood is looking out for him, this system does not fit me. The system is Lamar. Let me get to a system that I feel will fit me. And that's why we see what happened yesterday.
Starting point is 00:08:25 You know, it's interesting. So Hollywood Brown goes to Arizona. And you know their personnel very well. They have done a good job. They went out and got Zach Ertz. Now they get Kyler another receiver. And I kind of look at that Cliff Kingsbury offense, you know, that kind of air raid thing. And he's got a lot of different, you know, Ron Dale Moore is an excellent athlete.
Starting point is 00:08:45 Ertz is the volume receiver. DeAndre's the sideline guy. I kind of look at Arizona and I'm like, I think they're not trying to baby Kyler Murray. What they're saying is we got to get through the Rams and we got to be dynamic. We don't know if we have a coach as good as the Rams. I like what Arizona did.
Starting point is 00:09:04 Your thoughts? They have speed and they have size. So you look at Rondell Moore. He's small, but he's extremely strong and extremely explosive. Hollywood Brown, a really fast guy. And then you have AJ and Hopkins and D. Hopp on outside. Two big, go get the ball receiver. So you got two big guys.
Starting point is 00:09:24 Then you can have two smaller guys that can really blow the top off the coverage. And you, Zach Erds can work the middle. And so what they're doing is saying, okay, we can outscore you. We lost Chandler Jones. Defensively, we might not be as stout. But we're going to see if you have four corners that can match up with our four receivers. And also, with D. Hobb getting hurt last year, AJ was fairly healthy last year, but in previous years with the Bengals, he's been injured.
Starting point is 00:09:50 And so this can also be if we have guys that get hurt. We got Hollywood who's been a starter since he's coming into the league, and we got Ron Del Morrow, who were excited about who had a good rookie season last year. I was saying this just about five minutes ago. Jacksonville has no culture or history of drafting and developing players. Green Bay does. New England, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Rams, Niners. They don't.
Starting point is 00:10:20 So I would have just taken the best college player. I think you could have taken Sauce Gardner, Aden Hutchison, they're closer to refine talents, they're ready to play and start. Should I be concerned that the number one pick goes to an organization with no history of developing with a defensive coordinator that's never been a coordinator, he's trying to just figure that out. Now he's got to develop. I mean, I know everybody always loves talent and potential, but the Jacksonville pick,
Starting point is 00:10:49 can I be a little bit of a cynic on that? Yes, yes. When you pick a guy number one, you want to know what you're getting and what you're going to get. When with them picking Trayvon, it's almost like he has the measurables. He looks the part. He wasn't in discussion to be the number one pick until he ran a fast 40 and he showed out at the combine. When you watch Georgia football and you talk about Georgia football, you would name two or three guys on that defense before you got to him.
Starting point is 00:11:24 And he was the first pick. And so he has the talent. But that talent didn't show up in games all the time. When you go number one, you want to get a Trevor Lawrence, a Joe Burrow, a guy that is proven game in, game out year after year that I can get it done on the highest level. So it's concerning, but as excited as everybody is about getting drafted and the teams, half of these guys are going to be bused, Colin. And you look and say, why are they bus? It's what you just said earlier.
Starting point is 00:11:55 It's a lack of development. The majority of all these players can play. Coaches can coach, but they can't teach. Yeah, no. I mean, it's really what Nick Saban has done brilliantly. Yes, he recruits. He also develops players. They all get better out of high school.
Starting point is 00:12:09 He's the best at it. Yeah. That's what Pete Curl did. USC got all the juice out the fruit. Yeah. You know, it's interesting. So you know I love USC football, bit of a homer. Drake London's a great kid.
Starting point is 00:12:24 Like Michael Pittman before him, hard worker. So you work out with a lot of these guys, and I think you worked out with Drake London. The knock on him is, well, I don't know. He's not really a speed guy. You tell me, can he get open? What do you see with Atlanta's pick? He's going to get open. Like that's speed is so overrated.
Starting point is 00:12:45 I mean, there's been fast guys that are out of the league in 2.2 seconds. They can't decelerate. And I have a, I give us an analogy to my players all the time we train. If I'm the fastest car in the race and I crash on the first lap, can I win the race? Absolutely not. If I have no control, if I can't decelerate, it doesn't matter how fast I am. And so had Drake run to 40, he probably runs. four, four, eight, to four, five, five, five, two, twenty.
Starting point is 00:13:17 Drake will be fine. He will create separation. He will go get the ball. You get all, all his catches are contested. Well, I would rather be contested than not contested. I'd rather you come down with it did not come down with it. He can create separation, and he will continue to show that. These people that do all this talking, they don't know what they're talking about.
Starting point is 00:13:37 All right. So Green Bay went defense, went Georgia. I don't think you ever go wrong drafting Georgia guys. but they didn't get a wide receiver. They still have picks. Historically, they get the receivers later. But I thought they could have gone up and gotten the Arkansas kid who I saw. I bet Arkansas three times last year I lost every time.
Starting point is 00:13:54 So I watched some Arkansas football. Burks, that receiver's really good, really good. I thought they'd move up for them. They didn't. Do you think Aaron Rogers is mad today, or do you think he gets it? He gets it because, Colin, when has the Green Bay Packers drafted a receiver in the first round? you go from my generation Donald Driver
Starting point is 00:14:14 Greg Jennings Jordy Nelson Devante Adams when had they drafted a receiver in the first round now granted Gutten Cooch wasn't the GM so I guess he's following suit
Starting point is 00:14:25 to the guys before him they don't draft receivers in the first round that's just not what they do they do a good job of getting them later on now this is what I will say if they can draft George Pickens tonight I'm okay because I
Starting point is 00:14:40 believe he's a first round talent. Okay. If the Green Bay Packers can go get another Georgia kid and George Pickings, I'll be satisfied. No, I mean, seriously, they've got last three top picks have been Georgia. Yeah, Pickens is a guy. There's some red flags, I think. Some people have some red flags on him, but man alive is he super athletic. So T.J. Hushmanzada, 11 years in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:15:05 By the way, I don't think I ever asked you. Can Kenny Pickett play? What do you make of him? Kenny Pickett going to Pittsburgh that fits him you play college ball there so it's not going to be oh how is he going to hold up in the weather
Starting point is 00:15:18 the Pittsburgh Steelers very rarely are guys buss there they do a great job of development so I believe Kenny Pickett will be successful because he's familiar with the city he knows what it's about all he has to do is just switch locker rooms now and the Pittsburgh
Starting point is 00:15:35 Steelers just their culture and the way they develop kids he'll be fine, but he's in a tough division. And so when you're in that type of division, you better be ready to go immediately. Yeah. TJ, great seeing you, my man. Can't wait to continue to watch this today.
Starting point is 00:15:53 I'll be on TV right after it. Good seeing you. Take care of, Colin. Appreciate you, man. You bet. What up, Joy? Hey, TJ. Fun stuff.
Starting point is 00:16:01 One more herd. The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the IHard Radio app. Search Her to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Starting point is 00:16:21 Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hart Radio. app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:16:43 I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Clivert Taylor the 4th. Starting point is 00:17:52 What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jek. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down,
Starting point is 00:18:03 and try to make sense of how we survived it. including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 was big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now, so...
Starting point is 00:18:26 Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes, I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years. for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:18:43 Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase
Starting point is 00:19:04 that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Starting point is 00:19:23 Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway.
Starting point is 00:19:39 Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. USFL action continues tomorrow with a double header on Fox. At 4 Eastern, the Tampa Bay Bandits take on the Houston gamblers, then the Birmingham Stallions battle the New Orleans Breakers. Breakers' best team in the league, best offense by far, most sacks. Philadelphia hammered Toronto. There's a lot of questions this week.
Starting point is 00:20:06 Rock Rivers, he always blows those leads. You would think because there's so many egos in the media that they would understand egos, right? Philadelphia is not an easy team to coach. Talk radio and the media very intense. A lot of expectations, sometimes unrealistic. Doc Rivers inherited James Hardin in the middle of the season. First of all, that's hard. When you inherit not just a player, a star middle of the season.
Starting point is 00:20:36 He's a player that's declining and has been hard to coach. Joe L. M. B'd, oh, he just got hurt again. Your best defensive player, Thibel, didn't get vaxed, so he got an anti-vaxxer, and he can't play in the Canadian games at Canada. You're trying to balance that, and these are all delicate egos, with Tyrese Maxie, who's this emerging star, who's really, really good, and you're thinking to yourself, do I take minutes away from Hardin? do I take shots away from Tobias?
Starting point is 00:21:06 And then you've got Tobias Harris, who's really solid, paid like he's great, he's good, and he feels like an odd fit. And Doc Rivers is trying to balance all of this in a very loud, outspoken, intense, urgent sports city in America. This is not an easy team, certainly not a team good enough to sweep anybody. So you got the hot, think about this. How many teams, I mean, there may be a lot. how many teams in the history of the league at the trading deadline get a star and then win the championship? I mean, even LeBron always took like until year two to win championships.
Starting point is 00:21:46 He needed Wade Bosch and LeBron were like best friends. They didn't get the chemistry right until 30 games. They didn't win until the second year. See, you got the hardened ego. You got M.B.'s ego. You got Maxi's ascending. You're trying to balance that because like now he's better sometimes way. better than Hardin.
Starting point is 00:22:05 And Tobias Harris, I mean, he's a guy who thinks pretty highly of himself. He makes good money, good player. He feels like the odd in your odd man out. And you're just trying to balance all this stuff. And they blow out Toronto. And they shouldn't. But they're not good enough right now to sweep anybody. Toronto's well coached.
Starting point is 00:22:21 They play hard. They're good at home. Here was Doc afterwards. What I loved about James tonight, I thought he scored, he scored those 10 points quickly. And instead of looking for more points, he started becoming a point guard again. And then he went back to scoring. So I thought, you know, I jokingly called him as scoring Magic Johnson. And I thought that's what he did tonight.
Starting point is 00:22:41 You know, he assisted and he scored on a lot of buckets for us. And I do think this is sort of the new James Hardin, who's like a gym rat. The guy always plays. Now, he may be out all night, but he always plays. He doesn't give you a ton of the defensive end, but he has become a little bit more of a facilitator than a pure score. if he was scoring 32 a night and taking shots away from M. Bid and Maxie, would Philadelphia be better this morning?
Starting point is 00:23:08 I don't think so. So Doc's trying to balance that thing. This is not Milwaukee's a piece of cake. Janus is the giver. Everybody knows it's Janice's team. Everybody in Boston knows it's Tatum's team. He Marcus Smart and Jalen Brown have played together for years. So of Steph and Clay and Draymont.
Starting point is 00:23:28 A lot of these teams are harder to coach. Some are much easier to coach. I think Doc's doing a great job of balancing all this stuff. And we'll see what happens next, Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. One of the other games last night was taken over by Chris Paul.
Starting point is 00:23:47 Suns win 115-109 over the Pelicans. Wow. Good job, good effort by the Pelicans. Very impressed. Very good effort, Joy. I mean, this is the best team in the league. They're playing team. I think taking them to six is genuinely,
Starting point is 00:24:01 impressive. They're building something there for a team that we were talking about at the beginning of the year. Mike had moved out of New Orleans. I think they did a really impressive job this year. But Chris Paul was last night. 33 points on 14 to 14 shooting from the field and he spoke about the perfect night
Starting point is 00:24:17 after the game. I had no clue to, I don't know. I think maybe like a half time I realized, I might need to shoot a little bit more. You know what I mean? But throughout the game for me, I'm literally managing the game. You know, I mean, we was talking about taking heat checks the other day.
Starting point is 00:24:35 And I don't do that because I don't shoot enough to take a heat check. And once I miss, I might be cold, you know, but they would sort of let me get to my spots and shoot it. And that's an important thing, letting a player get to their spot. It's going to make them more comfortable and they get in a groove and then they can take over the game, which is what he did. He became the first player since Bill Chamberlain to make that many shots without a miss. And DeAndre Aiton, by the way, he didn't miss much either. It was a really good night for the suns.
Starting point is 00:25:03 They look like they're back to them to themselves. I only got to see bits and pieces because I watched the draft. But it was like on the road, third quarter, blow it open. They got poker back. He had 13 points. Yeah. This is the team we saw in the regular season. Games are closed for a while. They lean on Paul, Booker, D'Andre Aiton, boom, game over.
Starting point is 00:25:23 And once they get things going, it's really hard to get back in the game with them. If you can't shoot the way that they can shoot and have the experience that they have a really balanced well-coached team. So the Sons will open the series against the Mavs on Monday night in Phoenix. They're currently favored by six points, according to Fox Bet. They're also favored to win the series at minus 278. I think that's going to be a really good series. Dallas is coming off of a really hard-fought series where they had to manage without
Starting point is 00:25:51 Luca. Everyone's confidence is really solid right now because they didn't have Luca at the beginning of the series, so they know they can step up when they need to. They can win multiple ways. Luca back healthy. That is going to be a really fun series to watch. And the Sixers also closed out their series against Toronto, as you mentioned. So they will face the heat in game one.
Starting point is 00:26:08 That is a really interesting series. So I like Philadelphia in that series, but a lot of people, Miami was the number one seat in the east. I like the heat in that series, obviously. I picked the heat to win the championship. But I think it's going to be a really good series as well and a long series. So the NBA playoffs has been incredible. The first round was awesome, which is rare.
Starting point is 00:26:27 And I think we got some great matchups in round two. So Baker Mayfield and Jimmy Garoppolo are expected to get traded at some points. And the Browns and Niners are entering 2022 with new starting quarterbacks. And Jeff Howell, the athletic reported yesterday that the Texans, the Texans might be looking into both Baker and Jimmy Gee. I thought they were going to get Davis Mills. Well, yeah, they currently have Davis Mills as their starting quarterback. He said also despite the fact that there was no interest in Baker during the Watson trade, a source told him that things might have changed.
Starting point is 00:27:00 So, you know, it's a good any spot for them. I don't I don't know that I could see Jimmy G with the Texans. If on the Texans side would go with Davis Mills there. Now, obviously, as I just mentioned, it's kind of odd because that was the Deshawn Watson trade with the Browns. So why wouldn't you do it then?
Starting point is 00:27:17 What has developed in the Baker situation that makes anything different. I like Davis Mills. I think Davis Mills has something there. He's 13 games last season, 66.8 completion percentage. 2,664 yards. Accurate. 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Yeah, no, he's accurate.
Starting point is 00:27:32 Big kid, sees over the top. I mean, he didn't have much to work with. He didn't have a running game. Didn't get great protection. I thought he was decent. I really did. I also think it was kind of telling last night that Carolina did not take. I mean, I thought for sure Malikwis was going to Carolina.
Starting point is 00:27:47 I think that's actually a good sign for Matt Ruhl. The owner's like, just get the best player. Just get the best player. Don't worry about the quarterback right now. I mean, Matt Ruhl has a really long contract. I think he has seven years. So he's only going into his third. So they'd have to pay him for a really long time.
Starting point is 00:28:00 time if they were to move off of him. And maybe they are being more patient than owners tend to be in the NFL, but I thought that was a good sign for Carolina. Obviously, the Seahawks and Panthers could also be potential landing spots for Baker Mayfield to Jimmy Garoppolo. So only one quarterback was taken in last night's drafts in the first round. The Steelers selected Kenny Pickett with the number 20 pick. I also thought this was where Malikwilis was going to go if he did not go to Carolina.
Starting point is 00:28:27 It just felt like coming out of all of the, offseason, the combine. It seemed like most of the momentum was leaning towards Malik Willis over Kenny Pickett. But the Steelers have selected him, which I think is a great situation. He played for Pitt. He's been in the building. No team in the league knows Kenny Pickett more than the Steelers, and they are a well-run team. So if they feel confident in Kenny Pickett, then he was the right choice and he's ready to play right now. So here's Mike Tomlin letting Kenny Pickett know he is staying in Pittsburgh. All right, all right, all right, all right. Watch out. Let's go, baby. That's awesome.
Starting point is 00:29:02 Kenny, what's up? Hey, what's you doing tonight, man? Y'all watching TV. What y'all got going on? Hey, are you ready to come back to Oakland? Hey, we're about to make you a Pittsburgh Steeler, brother. Congratulations to you and your family. Bro, we're excited to have you, man.
Starting point is 00:29:25 This is awesome. I love Mike Tomlin. It's so rare to see Mike Tomlin, like, Lovely. It's great. I love my comment. I watch that on a loop. That is, those are the moments from the draft that make it really special. I mean, I mean, I mean, look how excited Franco was.
Starting point is 00:29:40 Franco could not contain himself as soon as, as soon as the commissioner showed in the card, he was freaking out. So I think it's great. Can you imagine as a young man having somebody call you and say, hi, this is Mike Tomlin. I'd like to make you a Pittsburgh dealer. I mean, that is, that's one of the great sentences in sports. Yeah. I mean, that is great. I mean, that's a feeling that I don't, like that, especially when you're at that transitional point in your life, you know, you've graduated college, you're moving into your career.
Starting point is 00:30:11 Like, that's a, that's a phone call, like a feeling you can't duplicate. Yeah. That's why it's why the draft is so exciting and special. Like, obviously, you know, we talk about it in a very transactional way, but there is this amazing emotional, transitional thing, historical thing about the draft that I think is so fascinating and fun. Oh my God, you're just changing lives. And the projection of like where these guys go and the expectations and then guys will fall and they overcome it. It's just, it is really fun. When you start looking at these quarterbacks who have dropped, remember Marino dropped.
Starting point is 00:30:46 Didn't Dan Marino drop in the draft? He goes to Don Shula. Aaron Rogers drops. He gets to go to Green Bay. Kenny Pickett drops. Lamar Jackson drops. I was telling my wife last night, I said, I know it sounds terrible. but you make all your money in the NFL in your second and third contract.
Starting point is 00:31:04 No, you do. And I mean, since they've changed the rookie scale, they really do. So it's like, does everybody understand, Baker Mayfield probably would have been way better off going to New England at the bottom of the first round. And, I mean, you know, the reality is you don't make your big money anymore in the first contract. You make it in the second and the third. So that, to me, it's like if I was a, you know, if I was a dad, I'd be like, this is great.
Starting point is 00:31:30 You get this is great. You're going to go to a playoff team. This is great. For Kenny Pickett, this is absolutely the best case scenario for him. You're going to a Steelers team that is solid. Mike Tomlin's never out of losing season. They know you. They know everything about you.
Starting point is 00:31:46 You played for the University of Pittsburgh. For those who you don't know, they share facilities. Yeah. They play. Both of them play in Heinz Field. They share the stadium. He's changing locker rooms and he's moving into a much nicer apartment. Also, it's through the years.
Starting point is 00:31:59 Dave Wonstat, who's from Pittsburgh, the Steelers have generally not wanted to draft Pittsburgh kids because they don't want the pressure on them. If they fail, they feel bad. That's been sort of an unspoken thing in the NFL. The Steelers would rather, you know, they don't want to put a lot of pressure on a kid. So the fact they went and got Kenny Pickett,
Starting point is 00:32:17 knowing he's ours, they like him. I mean, they've seen him play for four years. Right. I think it's a really good sign for anyone who had questions about Kenny Pickett that he went with the Steelers because no team knows him better. And as far as the hands thing, as I said, like the hands thing is exhausting. Guess what? He played in Pittsburgh for the University of Pittsburgh. There's zero weather adjustments whatsoever. He's literally changing locker rooms. He can play in cold weather. Marino went
Starting point is 00:32:44 in the first round, pick 27. Yeah. So he dropped, but he goes to one of the great coaches ever, Don Shula. Where you go matters for everyone like you were talking about earlier. I love the Giants and Jets picks as well, but it's like it's so much depends on the organization. But for a Quarterback, it is essential that you go somewhere stable. And then you occasionally get a Joe Burrow or Andrew Luck. Right, who are good enough to overcome the situation. But in both instances, Joe Burrow got beat up and Andrew Luck's out of the game. So you think, well, they're the exception.
Starting point is 00:33:12 Both paid a price going that high in the draft and getting drafted by a poor team. You know, Carolina with Cam Newton. They had bad old lines when he was there. You know, so like he paid a price. So you hate to tell kids this, but it's like you do get, especially for quarterbacks, dropping. Let me give you a few examples. Marino, Rogers, Lamar, like Brady, not the worst thing in the world. No. Joy with the news.
Starting point is 00:33:37 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd lie news. Well, you know, obviously what I usually do is I make a prediction after free agency. I do like four predictions before the season starts for my teams. And I do it after free agency. And then I do it after free agency and the draft. and then I do it after camp, after injuries.
Starting point is 00:34:01 And so I haven't done it, but yet post-draft. I'll probably do Monday or Tuesday. I'll do kind of a prediction on the teams that have gotten better. Two teams have really done a good job this offseason to get better, and especially on offense. The Miami Dolphins have gotten a lot better on offense. I don't know if their coach will make it. Philadelphia has done a really good job, and they've gotten a lot better.
Starting point is 00:34:23 And I think in both instances, I think it, I think, Miami looked at it and said, listen, man, Buffalo is great. That's the standard in our division. But also, New England's probably got its weakest roster in the last 20 years. I think Miami smells a little opportunity here. Listen, Netflix just lost a billion, multiple billion dollars on the stock market. They're now letting go of people. Watch all the rivals of Netflix like Disney Hulu go into acquisition stage.
Starting point is 00:34:52 They sense weakness. Netflix is not going away. they're going to rebound quickly. They'll lean up. But there's this moment here where Netflix is a little unstable, losing billions in the market, losing employees, a little chaos in the building, disharmonie. Watch all the streaming services sense weakness with the industry leader.
Starting point is 00:35:13 I think Miami looks at New England and says, okay, this is the weakest their roster's been. This is our moment. And they went big on offense. Philadelphia, I think, is doing the same thing. They got really aggressive last night. I think they look at Dallas. They lost a lot of production.
Starting point is 00:35:29 Both Washington and the Giants are kind of unsettled at quarterback. Daniel Jones, Giants aren't picking up his option. A report this week that Carson Wentz is merely a bridge quarterback. And so they go out and they get Hassan Reddick, a tremendous edge outside linebacker, playmaker defensively. Then they go out and get A.J. Brown, big time playmaker. and then they get Jordan Davis, who's going to play alongside Fletcher Cox, and eventually replace him. So I do think, I do think like Miami and Philadelphia, you get these little moments and you're like,
Starting point is 00:36:03 okay, this is the best team or the best roster. And you can sense it gets wobbly and it's like, let's go for it. This is our moment. Let's go for it. So I really like what Philadelphia did. Hassan Reddick is excellent, smart player, playmaker. I like the AJ Brown pickup. You got to figure out if, if, you're going to figure out if,
Starting point is 00:36:21 Jalen Hertz is the guy. So they went and drafted Devante Smith last year. He was better than I thought. Now you've got two big time receivers. All right. They've always been pretty good at Tide End. All right. But timing's everything.
Starting point is 00:36:34 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, it's me, Rob Parker. Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Boyd got to do a little kill? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English.
Starting point is 00:38:58 Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Starting point is 00:39:27 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:39:52 in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it
Starting point is 00:40:08 and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:40:24 And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Starting point is 00:40:45 Don't. go to net suite.com slash herd visibility controls over budget planning, HR financials, and more. So this will be my Arizona sports segment. Let me start with the Arizona Cardinals. A lot of people are like, wow, they made a trade. They went and got Hollywood Brown. That's a lot of money. Yeah, the Arizona Cardinals in a division with the Super Bowl champs and Kyle Shanahan have said,
Starting point is 00:41:10 listen, we got to get fast, we got to get elusive, we're going to be in shootouts. we have an offensive coach and a young star offensive receiver. Our young receiver quarterback, excuse me, Kyler Murray, who's been beat up the last two years at the end of the year. Let's get him more help. They got slot receivers. They have big receivers. They have speed. They have size.
Starting point is 00:41:29 They have Zach Ertz. They have James Connor who can catch. What they're basically saying is if we're going to win, we're going to win with offense. That's the side of the ball Arizona's chosen. What? The Seahawks spend a lot of money at safety. The Bears spend a lot of money at safety. center and linebacker in 2022.
Starting point is 00:41:48 I'm okay with what Arizona is doing. It's the right side of the ball. A lot of different unique athletes. Kyler Murray's the franchise. So let's get him as many players as we can. Some are small and fast. Some are big DeAndre Hopkins. Aren't the burners.
Starting point is 00:42:03 They have put a lot of draft capital at receiver and a lot of money at wide receiver. And like Miami, they've said this is the side of the ball. Bill Belichick's the defensive genius. How's he doing? Big Fangio, Mike Zimmer, Pete Carroll, how are they doing? So Zach Taylor won the division that had John Harbaugh and Mike Tomlin. Is he a better coach?
Starting point is 00:42:25 I don't know, but Zach Taylor's an offensive coach. And so that's where they're spending the money. I have absolutely no problem with it, and I like their draft pick last year at wide receiver, and I like the moves they made. Let me talk about the Phoenix Suns. So I'm not a big fan if I told you so because, you know, I do a call. right, Colin wrong, you know, every Monday. Nobody's perfect at this, certainly not me. But I am a huge fan of Chris Paul. And I've said before, there's five or six point guards
Starting point is 00:42:54 that are the all-time greats. Isaiah Thomas, Magic Johnson, John Stockton, Steph Curry, Chris Paul. Sorry if I miss one. For all different reasons. All of them, very self-aware. Some would say Steve Nash in there, very self-aware. I was never a Westbrook fan. head down, live in a tunnel, not my cup of tea. But Chris Paul, to me, he came out of Wake Forest. He was very feisty. He has the ability to be a great score, as you saw last night. But it's not really what defines him.
Starting point is 00:43:26 Smarts, toughness, mid-range, elevating. For years and years, he took all this heat about, you know, he doesn't win the finals. But let's go back to the Clippers. What happened when he left Blake Griffin and D'Andre Jordan? maybe simple basketball minds thought they were superior. They both disappeared. Neither one of their games had any nuance to it. Blake Griffith could jump over a car.
Starting point is 00:43:52 DeAndre Jordan was an unbelievable long player. Their games didn't have a lot of nuance. Chris Paul's game is 80% nuance. He does the stuff. You can't see the coaching, the huddles, the mid-range, work in the angles. in Phoenix. They'd been to hadn't made the playoffs in years. They get Chris, they go to the finals.
Starting point is 00:44:16 Everybody talks about Houston. The James Harden Houston stuff worked for about an hour. It was the time Chris Paul was there. When they gave the warriors at the time, the dynasty at the time, huge problems and led in the series. Oklahoma City was tanking. Chris Paul comes in. Boom.
Starting point is 00:44:31 There are these, I find myself defending people, not the stars, but the stars who don't get treated like stars. I mean, Chris Paul was with the Clippers when like Donald Sterling owned him. OKC was tanking. Houston had James Harden, who literally was so ball-centric he was exhausted by the playoffs. He goes to Phoenix, a team without great ownership or out-great recent history. I still don't think they're smartly owned.
Starting point is 00:45:02 And he's taken this entire roster, and it's been, in my opinion, the first or second best team in the NBA. this year I thought the best team I saw. So you go back to the three series clinching wins for the Phoenix Suns or for Chris Paul in the last couple of years. He's averaged 37 points and shot 77% from the Florida. That doesn't count his defense, his intelligence, his ability to sort of manage a game, when to turn it on, when to turn it off. But, you know, I hear this all the time from NBA fan boys. I watch all the games.
Starting point is 00:45:36 That's a shame. First, you should get out once in a while. Second, if you have to watch a lot of basketball to figure out Chris Paul's great, you don't really know basketball. It's like anything else. You can spot talent in any industry in minutes, in singing at seconds. If you need to watch Chris Paul every night to decipher to unlock the Rubik's cube of his game, dude, smart, reliable, tough, vocal.
Starting point is 00:46:05 Everybody wants to be everybody's friend. in 2020 in sports. Not Chris. Not Chris. Chris will bark at you. Chris is old school. I don't understand why more people don't like it. Maybe it's because he doesn't jump.
Starting point is 00:46:15 He's not really vertical. You're not going to see him on the cover of Slam magazine. But he talked after the game last night where he was virtually perfect. I had no clue to. I don't know. I think maybe like a half time I realized, I might need to shoot a little bit more. You know what I mean? But throughout the game for me, I'm literally managing the game.
Starting point is 00:46:37 You know what I mean? We was talking about taking heat checks the other day. And I don't do that because I don't shoot enough to take a heat check. And once I miss, I might be cold. But they would sort of let me get to my spots and shoot it. So the Sons hadn't made the playoffs. I'm reading here since 2010. He arrived during the finals.
Starting point is 00:46:58 And looked like the best team next to Milwaukee in the league. Now, they may not win a championship. And here come all the vultures around Chris Paul. Yeah, Milwaukee does have the best player on Earth. historically in the NBA, when you have LeBron or Michael or Magic or Janice or Bird, you usually win. And Janus right now is easily the best player in the league. So, yeah, they may not win it. They'll probably lose to Janus.
Starting point is 00:47:20 But Chris is a little bit like the classic pocket quarterback in the NFL. You know, the highlights aren't as good. Another sizzle to his game. But if you go back in the history of the NFL, you've got to be able to throw from the pocket to win. Like Kyler Murray will win a Super Bowl if he develops into a better pocket quarterback. Lamar Jackson, pocket quarterback. A lot of these guys move around. You got to throw the ball, distribute to others, not run around.
Starting point is 00:47:52 Eventually, that will win you Super Bowls. And Chris Paul's got a little bit of that. It's not a lot of flash. It's not very vertical, but good for him. And, you know, I can just see him now if they don't win the finals. it's like folks who was beating jordan you know when akim won his championships when michael went and played baseball like magic and bird basically for either 10 or 12 years it was like they were in the finals like it's just you do get these players occasionally how many finals did lebron make it a row
Starting point is 00:48:21 was it eight or nine like yonis is the best player in the league he's never hurt he's got a really good coach and a really good support system there's a chance they're not going to win the championship you know dionre aton gives him a shot because he can defend yonis a little, but way to go, Chris Paul. Got your back here. All right. Joel Klatt's going to stop by, talk about the draft.
Starting point is 00:48:43 It was a lot of fun. It was. The Jets, you know, sometimes you just don't want to say, like, I do think the Jets got the best receiver and the best corner and, you know, a top three or four edge rusher. I really do. I mean, I watched the Jets. I'm like, those are good players.
Starting point is 00:49:01 Jets had a good draft. But folks, if you, if you coached, If your coach is the fourth best coach in your division, and it could be, he's definitely third this morning, could be fourth. If your quarterback is the fourth best quarterback in the division, we'll see. He's not number one with Josh Allen. It's hard to overcome that stuff.
Starting point is 00:49:21 So is Zach Wilson pops this year, then all this stuff may work. Hour three on a Friday next. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite.
