This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app,
Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
A win is a win.
A win is a win.
I don't care what I'm saying.
Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey,
or my career in sports media.
Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast,
The Clifers Show.
This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes,
creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard,
but celebrated.
So let's get to it.

On the Look Back at it podcast.
For 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84's big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year,
unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians,
and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Good to have you in.
Alex Curry filling in for Joy Tabor, who is in Europe until Wednesday or Thursday next week.
Currently at the Louvre.
Just saw she post that with the Mona Lisa.
Wow.
My wife's out of town until next Wednesday.
January 17th birthday.
Joy Taylor's 7th, January 17th birthday.
Your wife and Joy of the same birthday?
Yeah, and they're both gone until next Wednesday.
I said it before. It's one and the same.
Same personality totally.
Same personality.
Hold me accountable.
So here's a story that's interesting, Alex.
Yeah.
So Dale Arnold's been a reporter and talk show host and many things in Boston for years.
He tweeted yesterday that wouldn't be surprised if Tom Brady goes to the Miami Dolphins this season.
he said he's hearing parties for working on it he was the first person in the net and the media
in boston to report brady de tampa was a done deal so it's hard to wrap your brain around that
it feels absurd today this season but it's very i think it's very possible and i'll just throw this out
to you stephen ross owns the dolphins many of you know this stephen ross is the biggest
richest michigan donor tom brady went to michigan they've spoken they know it
each other, they have a relationship at some level. I was told, because I think we were the first
show nationally to break the story, we were Brady to Tampa. I was told by that source, Miami was
where Giselle would prefer to go. It's an international city. It's a fashion city. Miami is very
international. Giselle is an international star. Tampa's very domestic. Tampa's a small town.
And Miami feels like a much bigger city, much more dynamic and much more vibrant and much more international.
She wanted Miami, but in the end, they settled on Florida because the dolphins didn't have their act together.
And Tampa had, you know, a conveyor belt of really good players.
So Miami's roster today feels very Tampa Bay Buccaneer about two years ago.
A lot of good receivers.
solid B backs, you know, a tight end or two people like.
So the weakness of the Tampa team when he took it over, O-line, the weakness of this Miami team,
and they've tried to help it a little bit O-line.
Both teams had good young defensive players.
So it's very interesting.
And also Brady loves Kyle Shanahan and his system, which as you age is very, very good system
if a quarterback does have some limitations.
Brady doesn't have many, but it's a very good system for quarterbacks.
Who's the coach of Miami?
He's Kyle Shanahan's guy.
So they're building a very San Francisco offense out east.
Brady loves that offense.
So Chris Sims was on this show about a week ago, and he talked about,
he thinks it's not only possible, it's very possible because of something he heard not long ago.
I think he only retired to make a play to try to go somewhere else.
You know, that would be my two cents.
I know that he and Sean Payton tried the finagle away to be the quarterback coach in Miami.
I know that.
I still think it's very odd that the week Kyle Shanahan didn't go to the NFL combine.
Tom Brady was in San Francisco at the same time.
I just think that's odd.
I don't know.
It's a lot of coincidence there to where I just can't get behind it.
I think he tried to look at some options.
He couldn't find anything better.
And he said, you know what?
The bucks are still really damn good.
and the NFC, it's there to be had.
That is very true.
Green Bay lost Devante Adams.
They couldn't beat Tom with Devonte Adams.
They're not beating them now.
So it's something to think about.
It doesn't make a ton of sense now
because he literally got on the phone and recruited Russell Gage.
So that doesn't feel right.
That doesn't feel like on Tom's brand.
You recruit guys here.
You want to play a year with them.
But I could see it.
I mean, the Stephen Ross connection, the Michigan connection, the way they're building the offense.
I mean, you start looking at these weapons for Miami.
By the way, in a division where Belichick as a BB gun offense, the Jets of the Jets.
I mean, you know, you got Josh Allen, but you'll always be able to attract a lot of free agents and guys that take a little less to play in Miami.
I mean, Miami, if you go look at the NBA, when, if you go look at the NBA, when, if you're
you look at stars, free agents that have been able to choose where they want to go in the NBA,
you'd think they'd go to New York and Philly and Boston, and they really don't.
Kevin Durant was an exception.
A lot of them have gone to Miami.
Shaq went to Miami.
Antoine Walker went to Miami.
LeBron wanted to go to Miami.
Chris Bosch wanted to go to Miami.
Miami's always been attractive to athletes.
It's aqua water, no state tax, very chill, warm weather, workout anywhere.
You can go out of your balcony and run on the beach any day of the year.
It's perfect.
So I was told that Tom would have ideally loved to have gone to Miami and go beat Belichick.
But they just didn't have their act together.
They didn't have players.
And Brian Flores, I mean, he just didn't know much about him.
I mean, he knew Brian.
But, you know, Brian's initial move into Miami was very defense-driven.
Now the franchise Miami is totally pivoted to offense, which they should.
So we'll see.
and I do think Chris Simms said this
I do think Brady
looks at the NFC
his division's now the worst in football
it's not even arguable
it's too late now to make big
moves it's the draft
free agency's over so that division's getting worse
and I think he you know
he always thought he would beat Green Bay anyway
so all right
sage Rosenfels played in the NFL
for 12 years Dolphins
Texans Giants Vikings Washington
so okay let me
throw this at you, Sage. So I'm reading an article from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel from a
longtime Packer reporter. And this is kind of fascinating. And I always understand, listen, when
you're on a football team, some of the guys you like, some you don't. If you're an older player,
you probably don't, you don't even listen to the same music as young guys. Like, I get it, right?
I'm not close with everybody at a company, but I do think it's important that I'm close with
joy and I'm close with my team, right, and my staff. So this article states that basically
Devonte Adams and Aaron Rogers, Devante never felt like he, he,
was part of the group.
Like, and it's like, dude, if there was one guy in Green Bay, I would be friends with.
Brady's taking his guys to the Kentucky Derby every year.
Am I reaching there or is that something?
I think it can be something.
I mean, everyone's always looking for things in Aaron Rogers.
He is a polarizing character, a polarizing quarterback, polarized in person sometimes.
And, you know, I think playing a position of quarterback is a lot about connection.
I really do.
I think the great ones, the great ones have this ability to connect with other people, no matter where they're from.
And, you know, I played with a lot of a quarterbacks from far, who had his own way, like a guy from the country,
connecting with people from all over the country who come from different backgrounds as him.
And then Eli Manning, who came from, like, wealthy private school in New Orleans, also had ability to connect with his teammates.
And some quarterbacks are a little bit better than that, better at that than others.
and maybe, maybe in Green Bay, this could be an issue with Aaron Rogers.
But, you know, who know?
He's his own sort of person.
And again, I agree with you.
If I'm a quarterback, I am trying to be basically not best friends, but very, very close with
the key components of my offense, the left tackle, the offensive line, my best receiver.
You want those guys to, you want to really get along with those guys.
Yeah.
So, you know, I said the downside to get Tyreek Hill to Tua.
is that
Tyree Kill
in this offense, by the way, with
Mike McDaniel,
it took Jared Goff and
Jimmy Garoppolo's numbers
and took those guys and made them,
it's very quarterback friendly.
And to his numbers last year
are pretty pedestrian.
They're going to be better now.
And I said, in a year,
will it divide the room in Miami
where everybody's going to timeout?
Goff was great with these numbers.
Garoppolo was great.
what do you make of Tyreek Hill two of the whole fit?
I mean, do you think in a year we'll be going,
we'll look at Tua differently because the offense will produce more points and numbers?
I think it will. Listen, I'm one of the quarterbacks that was a part of this system.
Mike McDaniel was a quality control back in Houston, right?
Matt LaFluor Quality Control, obviously, Kyle Shanahan, our offensive coordinator at the beginning of this whole thing.
If you look during that whole run, okay, from Houston days to Brian Hoyer in Cleveland having a pretty good season and just sort of, I mean, to obviously Matt Ryan and just all the places.
Aaron Rogers having one of the best years, the best years of his career at the end here in this offense.
Yeah.
Ryan Tannahill, failure in Miami, successful quarterback in Tennessee in this type of offense.
Yeah.
This offense does make quarterbacks better.
It does help them to maximize their talent.
It does put up better numbers.
And as we see from the playoffs, especially in the NFC,
we see teams advancing into the playoffs and deep into the playoffs
and into now weighing in the Super Bowl.
So there is something about I had a cup of coffee with Kyle Shanahan or Sean McVeigh.
And Mike McDaniels had probably the most coffee with both those guys.
And in that style of offense, just so you know.
When I was in Houston, we signed Andre Davis.
He was like Michael Vicks, super fast ride receiver.
We needed him.
He wasn't a great receiver.
He was more of a tournament, but we needed him because he was so fast.
He needed with the play action type stuff that they run, you need a couple of guys that can really flat out roll.
And Andre Davis is one of those guys.
Of course, Tyree Kill, probably the fastest guy in the NFL.
So that component with play action, think if you're a safety, right?
There's play action.
The linebackers come up.
And now you've got Tyree Kill running action.
you with all of that speed.
He's going to be to run past you or you're going to back up so far.
There's going to be huge spaces in the second day.
That's what this type of offense does.
And he is the perfect addition to Mike McDaniel's offense.
You know, it's interesting.
Baker Mayfield didn't have a ton of market.
I kind of theorize that he's a better armed talent than Trubisky.
He doesn't have 22 civil suits like Deshaun.
He's vaccinated, unlike Wentz.
he's not as brittle as Marioota.
He's not as old and more athletic than Matt Ryan.
Yet there's no market.
And I said, it's the toxicity.
You have to be at some, just as always Jay Cutler's issue.
And I'm not saying you have to be loved by everybody.
But Baker Mayfield is one of the 32 best quarterbacks in America.
I strongly believe that.
He may be 20th, 18th, but he's one of them.
And when I say this, people push back in.
go, if you can play, you can play. And I'm like, well, maybe if you're Aaron Rogers.
But your thoughts about Baker virtually, having no market, all these guys that change teams
have issues. But is toxicity worse than all their issues? Well, I think you and I like to analyze
sports in two ways. Physically, watching a player actually play and compete. And then this
mental side, right? I've known you for a while now. You love talking about the psychology of
sports and how players think and how they are and how they act. And I know there's a,
you and Baker have a sort of a history there, of course. When I watch him, I don't know,
I've never met him. I've never been in a locker room with him. I've never been in a
huddle with them. I've never been. We've seen what I've seen publicly. And of course,
I'm a big 12 guy. So I was, I saw him at Oklahoma for four years. And just all of that,
I have my own perception of who Baker is and how likable he may or may not be.
That's my own.
But what I see when I watch him actually in the physical side on the film, all right, his feet are a mess.
If you would go and be a quarterback's coach and analyze all the things with Baker, his timing is off.
He doesn't have rhythm in his footwork.
He misses throws that he should be able to make.
He struggles sometimes to move on to number three to running back on a little burst route.
he's four hitches in and he should be two.
He has major weaknesses, I think, in some of those type of rhythm mechanics, which are really
important for the quarterback.
He missed a lot of throws last year.
Yeah, he did.
And that's why they didn't throw the, I mean, that's one of the reasons they didn't throw the ball
all that much.
What was his timing?
It's legit.
I mean, OBJ, he has his own sort of set of circumstances, but their timing, because
OBJ is always a little off.
And Baker's is always a little off.
That's where their timing was so terrible.
They both weren't great for a timing style of offense, which this is.
Yeah.
So I thought all year long that Kenny Pickett was the best college quarterback I saw,
and then I watched the Combine, and I know it's recency bias,
but his personality, his side, I mean, I watched him on YouTube.
You know, I don't watch Liberty Games, you know.
So I watched them at the Combine, and I was like, wow, that's different.
That's the best college quarterback.
because I watched all these other guys, the kid at Cincinnati, the kid at Carolina.
And I was like, so that was my interpretation that I don't like to be swayed by the combine,
but the help and the homeless guy, his interviews, podium, his size, his likability.
I got to be honest.
I'm a sucker.
I was swayed by it.
I mean, you've seen more than I have.
Is he the best college prospect out there?
Yeah, I think so.
I see the highest ceiling with him.
And I always like guys, as you look around,
you look back in your history,
Ohio State's won a lot of college football games, right?
Florida went urban Myers.
They went a lot of college football games.
But their quarterbacks end up not being good NFL quarterbacks.
I love it when there's guys who are smaller schools and not the big blue bloods,
who raise the level of play of everybody and they end up winning a lot of football games.
I always think back to Drew Buries.
Yeah.
We win the Rolls Bowl in college at Purdue.
You take Drew Breeze off that team.
I don't know.
They win four or five games that year.
I think this kid is one of those types of guys that raises the level of play of sort of the people around him.
And obviously, he does have the physical talent.
And, you know, I know though, you know if that video of him handing out things to a homeless person in Indianapolis was staged, he's the type of person that seems like that you want on your football.
team. He just, I think he's, you know, could be a really good NFL quarterback. It's such a,
it's, I mean, I watch quarterbacks all the time. And it is still, I missed on Justin Herbert.
I wasn't impressed at Oregon. I saw him bubble screens and go routes out of bounds. And I was like,
eh, I'm not really sure. And of course, he is who he is. And so it's such a hard,
thing to try to really guess of which one of these guys is going to be a really good or a great
NFL quarterback or just a long time backup or out of the league in two years. I mean,
you get such a wide variety. But as you said that word, likeability, likeability to me is the
most underrated sort of characteristic that all these quarterbacks, that people who judge quarterbacks,
have a hard time seen. The likeability of your quarterback inspires the guys around them and those
teams that have winning more football games or winning playoff games and having comebacks. The
likeability to quarterback does just sort of raise the level of everybody in an NFL franchise,
and that is a very hard thing to find.
All right.
30 seconds left.
How's your bracket doing?
Because mine's a mess.
I butchered it.
I didn't like UCLA at all.
I love Arizona.
You got anybody left?
Good Iowa State, baby.
Iowa State tonight.
Men's and women's.
Men's and women's.
All right.
We're not just a football school.
No, Iowa State is, of course, my team.
you want to watch a grind-it-out defense.
In the Big 12, I'll tell you what, the way these teams play defense this year,
if we win, it's going to be 55-51.
If we lose, it's going to be 55-to-51.
It is low-scoring, grind-out basketball.
It's a lot of fun to watch.
Coach Opsenberger's on great job.
They won two games last year.
I know.
Talk about Cinderella story.
I know we have a pretty good tradition,
but to go from two wins into the Sweet 16, I can't wait for tonight's matchup.
Great seeing you, buddy.
All right. Thanks for having me on.
Yeah. Big 12, by the way, has accounted itself well in the tournament.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah. I mean, like, listen, and Texas Tech against Duke, like, that's a real basketball team.
They were good. That game with about five. Duke's best players hit a couple of big shots late.
The point, you know, point guard's not their best player. They have a top three kind of, you know, lottery pick.
But, like, their best players hit big shots late. Otherwise, that game was a, that's a coin flip.
So, uh, big 12 look good. And you know,
the error thing is Kelvin Sampson, Houston coach?
You forget they were in the final four last year.
And they lost players to the NBA, and they're back.
That dude can coach.
That guy can coach.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-taped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.

I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
so I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Because people scoreboard watch.

Sunday on Fox, things are always bound to get weird down in us.
You can outlast the rest on the first road course of the season
and bring home that checkered flag, NASCAR,
Circuit of the America Sunday at 3 Eastern on Fox and the Fox Sports app.
There's a difference between losing and losing the same way.
If you lose, it happens.
You don't necessarily need to tweak the program.
But I think Gonzaga has to consider it.
Gonzaga lost again, and in the tournament the last several years,
it feels like they're losing the same way.
They get pushed around.
They get out-physicaled.
They don't get toughened up much during their regular season
because they average 25 to 30-point wins in the WCC, the West Coast Conference.
It's not a terribly physical conference.
They have teams like San Diego, Pepperdine, Santa Clara, Loyola.
Sounds like places with really nice zoos and beaches.
It's a volleyball conference, right?
That's what it feels like.
Yeah.
It's not the Big East.
In the 80s and 90s, the Big East won seven titles and had 18 final fours.
And it was a wrestling match.
Providence and Seton Hall and St. John's and Georgetown in Villanova and Syracuse.
And every weekend was a battle.
And those teams came out of that conference and pushed pack 12 teams around in the tournament.
You see it in college football, where the Big 12 is remarkable.
They set scoring records in football.
and then they play the SEC in the tournament in the playoff.
And the Big 12 has not won a national championship.
I could be wrong, but I think it's in, what, 17 years as the SEC keeps piling them up.
There's nothing wrong with winning regular season games,
and it's not like the Big 12 doesn't win bowl games in college football,
and that Gonzaga isn't an excellent March badness team.
But in 22 years, they've won their conference 20 times and finished second twice.
Now, they probably can't move out of that conference because they don't have a football program,
but it does make me think when you start losing the same way, Baylor, they beat UCLA last year,
but we're pushed around.
The 50-50 balls last night went to Arkansas.
Do they have to recruit a little differently?
They just don't come out hardened from their conference.
Here's an example.
This year, they played six games, six.
That's it.
decided by nine or fewer points.
They lost four.
Maybe it's just their conference.
Maybe it's not solvable.
But when you start losing the same way,
that's when you have to be introspective and go,
hey, do we recruit a little bit of different players?
I never question their skill or their offense.
Sometimes I question their toughness and their defense.
Here's Alex with the news.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Well, let's stick with the tournament because Coach Kay will get at least one more game in his incredible Duke career.
The Blue Devils beat Texas Tech last night, 78 to 73 to advance to the Elite 8, where they will take on Arkansas on Saturday, who are heading to their street, second street elite 8.
And then they knocked off number one zags that you were just talking about.
Now, this was Coach K's 100th tournament when he is the first coach to ever reach up milestone.
Any guess who the close second might be?
Let me think.
Is it somebody that's, I mean, you know, John Wooden would win a lot,
but back then the tournament didn't have as many teams.
North Carolina.
Dean Smith.
Roy Williams was 77.
Wow.
That is the closest second to his 100th tournament.
Oh, because Roy Williams was also at Kansas.
So, yeah, so Roy won a bunch of Kansas.
Okay, that's good.
That's a good trivia question right there.
I like that.
Yeah, good one, right?
So, but just to put this into perspective,
I know you were talking about it earlier,
how everybody loves Coach Kay.
these are some notable players that he's coached.
Because remember, he coached obviously at Duke,
but then he also coached the Olympic teams.
LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant,
Steph Curry, James Hardin, Kauai Leonard,
Damien Liller, Dwayne Wade, Cremel Anthony, Anthony Davis,
Chris Paul, Russell Westper, Kyrie,
Jimmy Butler, Draymond Grie.
I mean, he has coached them all.
A lot of personalities.
Yeah.
You know, and I've known a couple of people,
you know, I've worked with people that have been coached by him.
And he's not for everybody.
he's very intense.
He practices hard.
But, you know, I mean, just look at that list of coaches, players.
Kauai Leonard is nonverbal.
Kyrie Irving is highly verbal.
Yeah.
Jimmy Butler's a live wire.
Demar DeRosen's more low-key.
So is Clay Thompson.
Draymond Green is feisty.
I really encourage everybody to buy the book by Ian O'Connor called The Rise of Coach K.
Coach K, the Rise and Rain, fascinating.
And what I took from the book, and Ian's brilliant,
but what I took from the book, it was so well researched,
is that even as great as he is,
people didn't like when he got hired because he had a losing record.
Bobby Knight got him the job.
Bobby Knight called Duke and said, this is your choice.
And then five, six years in, everybody wanted him gone,
and the athletic director stood by him and said he's the right guy,
we're going to get it right, and he made the right decision.
And when you read the book, they've had so many great players,
but it felt like to me when I read the book,
the key to the whole Duke story was Johnny Dawkins.
And I remember Johnny, long, angular player.
They had good players forever,
but when you read the book, it really felt like when Johnny got there,
it kind of changed everything.
But he's overcome the one and done,
the three-point revolution.
It's a really good book because it's the kind of book that if you read, and if you're in any industry,
even if you're not in an industry, it shows you that even if you're brilliant and you have Duke,
it's hard in life.
Yeah.
It's been a struggle for him.
And that thing is teetered and been on the precipice of going off the edge.
And Mike just always had the will and fortitude to kind of get it back.
Fascinating book.
Please, if you can.
If you have time this weekend watching the games,
buy that book.
I'm going to add it to my audio book, Q.
There you go.
Thank you for that.
You bet.
All right, moving on.
The Dolphins introduce the new offensive editions of Tyree Kill.
And Tehran Arm said yesterday,
the two are hoping their combined experience
can help Miami become a strong contender in the postseason.
A lot of the team's success will be dependent on Tua's performance.
But Tyree Kill thinks the dolphins have put together the right pieces
to support their quarterback.
Take a listen.
Tua is one of the most accurate,
quarterback's in the NFL, man. So just his ball placement, you know, getting us the ball in space,
you know, perfect placement. They definitely want to put all the right pieces around the
quarterback because the quarterback is the most important play on the field. You know, having myself
to run and a few more other pieces that were already here. Like you definitely, like you definitely
can tell that the only want to win. I like when Miami's good, though, is the Miami Heat teams
that have won have had some glamour, the Miami Hurricane teams that one had some glamour.
Like the city, you kind of, you become your city.
you know, Dan Marino's dolphins.
Like I like when the dolphins are fast and they're glamorous and they're fun.
Nothing against Brian Flores, who I really thought was excellent.
Yeah.
But it wasn't the most beautiful football.
It's going to be a lot prettier now.
I got a lot.
I mean, geez, Cedric Wilson's your third receiver.
So your second receiver is Jalen Waddle, who was fantastic at Alabama.
And Tyreeks obviously gifted.
And Mike Gaseki.
So it's going to be, it's going to feel a little old.
cool dolphin where they're going to throw the ball.
It's going to be a lot of speed.
There's going to be some up-tempo stuff. It's going to be fun to watch.
And I think it's going to be extremely important that Tyreek talks to Tua and really gives
him the insight that he got from one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
Patrick Mahom almost be like a coach to him.
Yep.
So, and it sounds like he's going to do that.
Sounds like he's excited to do that.
All right.
Well, just a week after losing Devante Adams to the Raiders,
Aaron Rogers is losing another target as Marquez Valdez Scantley.
has signed with the Chiefs. This comes just a day after Kansas City, sent all pro-wide receiver
Tyree Killed to the Dolphins for five draft pick. Now, although the terms haven't been made public,
reports indicate that Valdez Scanling is signing a three-year deal worth up to $36 million
that will set him up to go from one MVP quarterback to another. Now, we knew KC was going to go out
and get some weapons. He is a speed receiver. Yes. So you're not going to get the entire route
tree from him. He's a speed receiver over the top. He'll give you five, six touchdowns.
a year. And you can do some bubble screen stuff. Get him the ball early or late. Yeah.
Not really an intermediate guy to this point in his career. But listen, he's tall and can really
run. And the truth is, he gets behind the defense. So, and again, with Andy Reed, he goes from
Aaron and Matt LaFleur to Andy and Mahomes. So he's a nice piece. They're going to draft another
receiver. And they got Choochoochoo. And they have, yeah, that needs to be. So they got a number
True in Hardman, a good slot in Juju.
I think Scantling's their deep threat, maybe a two to a three.
Probably a three. They got a world-class tight end, the best young center in football,
good old line. So I like the move. He is not a one-dimensional player, but you kind of know
what he is. This is not Cooper Cup. We're going to put him in the back field. You know,
drag route. He's going to beat people over the top. So, and he'll give you five, six touchdowns
year. And by the way, in the
AFC, you can't have enough weapons, so I liked it.
And it's Patrick Malmes. You have Patrick Moms.
Good stuff, Alex, for the news.
Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd-Lie News.
Big college basketball night tonight.
UCLA and Carolina.
That's what I'm so excited about. Great. That's going to be.
I was like watching Duke and Michigan State the other day.
Yeah.
Izzo and Coach K. Like, there's so much history with that stuff.

Do you remember when Diana Ross
double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam Jek.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack,
so I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you
hear on earth.
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

So Deshawn Watson,
the talented and controversial quarterback,
22 or 20 pending civil lawsuits,
he did get some good news yesterday
on certain counties.
not taking up some legal action, not charging him.
We'll let lawyers figure that out.
He's holding his press conference today in Cleveland.
I'll give you a couple of the quotes that we've pulled off social media.
One of the things he said is, I understand there's going to be a stain that's probably going to stick with me for a while.
I've never done the things people are alleging.
I'm going to continue to fight for my name and clear my name.
He also said why he was traded, asked to be traded.
the biggest thing at the time.
We were both going in different directions.
That's why I wanted out.
I thought the most interesting quote,
he said,
I knew Cleveland was the best situation
from a football standpoint.
Now, that's where I agree with him.
Remember, this came down to four teams.
Atlanta, Carolina, New Orleans,
all from the awful NFC South or Cleveland.
Well, the best coach that we know of is in Cleveland.
He was the AP coach of the year.
what, two years ago, or a year ago.
So, I mean, you got Arthur Smith in Atlanta, no idea.
Bruce Allen's the new coach.
Is it Dennis Allen, my bad.
Defensive coordinator elevated.
So Dennis Allen, he did it once and got fired in Vegas or Oakland at the time,
so I have no idea.
Matt Rule, I like, but I got no idea.
He's not going to be around there along.
If Sam Donald keeps throwing picks.
Or I got Kevin Stefansky.
Well, folks, head coach has a lot to say in how you do.
The other thing is, just think about his life experience.
He was running for his life for the last four years in Houston.
They didn't have a good run game, and the O-line was awful.
Well, Cleveland's got the best tandem in the league in Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb.
That's the best running back tandem.
Excellent O-line.
Good tackles, great guards.
They also have David and Joku, who for some reason, Baker-Mafield doesn't throw
to who's super talented.
And now they have Amari Cooper, who's a grown-up, right?
So, like, you know, this is a guy that's been in the league a while.
You know, you can depend on him.
It is the best situation.
It's noisy.
He's going to get suspended, I would guess, for all of September.
The division's not easy.
I tend to think, well, the division's tough.
It's kind of overrated.
Matt Stafford went to a way better division and won a Super Bowl.
You know what I mean?
like in the end, if I was a quarterback, I'm not.
But if I was a quarterback, I would worry less about the division and more about
am I going to a place that has help, right?
Like people, Aaron Rogers is in a lousy division.
It's not helping him.
Okay.
They get the buy at home and they still can't win.
So, and by the way, Ciox were winning Super Bowls in the great division.
Niners got to a Super Bowl in a great division.
Rams just won a Super Bowl in that division.
Alabama and Georgia with the two best teams in college football,
they come from the toughest conference.
I think that's overrated, being in an easy division.
Scott and Zaga, you're not tested all year.
So I think, you know, if you can come out of this division as a playoff team,
Cincinnati twice, Pittsburgh twice, Baltimore twice,
your battle tested.
That means something.
So by the way, he was in a lousy division in the AFC South.
They got out of that division.
They get beaten the playoffs.
So it is the best football situation.
coach, O-line, and weapons.
Now, if you went to Atlanta, which I thought was going to win,
because at one point they had Kyle Pitts, Calvin Ridley, and Russell, gauge.
Well, that's kind of different.
They don't have gauge anymore.
And I have Ridley, and so it's not the same.
And they're all lines, bad pass blocking O-line.
So it makes sense to me.
So if we get some sound here before the hour, we'll give it to you.
Now, I said this earlier.
We're kind of through the biggest part.
Somebody's going to sign Devonte Parker, the wide receiver for Miami.
He's okay.
He's like a three.
He's kind of athletic, but he's not real consistent.
He's probably a three.
Decent three.
Dolphins got Cedric Wilson.
They don't need him now.
A better three.
So here are my post NFL free agency predictions.
I'm not going to do records.
I'm not going to do playoffs.
But my feeling today is Buffalo was the best team
easily in that division. They add
Vaughn Miller to protect leads late
in the game from the edge. They're still the best team.
I think Miami just simply has far
better playmakers than New England.
Jalen Waddle, Cedric Wilson, Tyreek Hill,
Mike Gaseki, they got better players.
I don't understand what New England's
doing. I just don't get it.
I don't get it. They're not paying
Mac Jones. Who are you paying?
I think they're third. They're a non-playoff team for me.
and the Jets, I'll believe it when I see it.
I think in the West and the AFC, people are spending a lot of time paying attention to Russell Wilson.
You should.
DJ Jones and Randy Gregory, Ann added to Bradley Chubb, is an unbelievable front if they're healthy.
That is really, really stout.
So I have them winning the division.
even without Tyreek Hill, I picked Denver with Tyreek Hill.
I picked Denver to win it.
I think Kansas City will still be viable.
I think the Chiefs and the Chargers,
it'll come down to the end of the year when they play each other.
Probably in week 16 or 17, they'll play each other.
Whoever wins gets second, whoever doesn't gets third.
And I put the Raiders in fourth,
but I think they're going to be a real viable team.
I mean, again, this division is you could have four playoff teams.
So I don't think that's ever happened.
It could happen here.
in the AFC North, again, the only reason I put the Browns fourth,
I don't think Deshawn plays in September.
And I think if you go one in three in this division,
O and four, one and three, if he doesn't play for five or six weeks,
it's hard to overcome.
Bengals, Raven, Steelers, listen, Joe Burrow has a better O line and better protection.
He got to a Super Bowl being sacked 70 times.
Benefit of the doubt.
I love him.
I love his weapons.
I like Zach Taylor.
I'll give them the division.
I got the Colts with Matt Ryan over the Titans.
Again, I don't think either team's great.
They both feel 10 and 7.
I do think Robert Woods to Tennessee was a really good fit.
He is the best run-blocking receiver in the league.
It's a physical football team.
All Mike Frable teams are physical.
He's a really physical receiver.
But I like Matt Ryan.
I know he's old, but he was never young.
To me, I have them winning the division.
In the NFC, I'll throw it out.
Listen, do we like anybody?
Dallas is not the same team today.
So even with their weapons last year,
they disappointed you because of Mike McCarthy.
Well, he didn't go anywhere.
Carson Wentz, I think adds wins.
Remember, Washington lost a lot of one-possession games,
and they were really bad at quarterback.
They'll be way better at quarterback.
And I think Dallas, Philly, and the Giants are non-playoff teams.
I'll take the Rams,
although I will say this.
They're probably not going to have quite the pass rush.
Don't be socked if they make a move.
They may draft it, trading deadline.
You know, Vaughn Miller was really big for them.
And Aaron Donald's a year older.
So I like him a lot.
I do think Trey Lance can play.
I do.
And I love the coach.
And I like their offensive personnel have to upgrade in the draft the O line.
But I take, I think Trey Lance can play.
get second. Arizona's a viable third. Seahawks are in rebuild mode. That's not
argue about that. Before Devonte Adams left, I told the staff, Minnesota is going to win this
division. I think the Vikings with an offensive coach are going to pop a little bit, love their weapons.
Both receivers, tight end back, added Zadaria Smith, the edge rusher. I think Minnesota,
always a team that plays the Packers well. Kirk Cousins, winning record in Lambo. Green Bay has no
weapons. They got no weapons. It's hard to win a division. Minnesota's got several. Bears,
lions rounded out. And in what is as bad a division as the world's ever seen, Tampa will
clinch by Thanksgiving over the Saints, the Panthers and the Falcons. Falcons in full sort
of not tank, full rebuild mode. So now you do know half the teams that made the playoffs,
For the last 20 years, half the teams that make it don't the following year.
So don't at me.
Cowboy fans, you're crazy.
That division, you've got a different winner every year.
So half the teams that make the playoffs every year do not the following year.
So I have the Washington will make it.
I'm going to have Indy make it.
I'm going to have Denver make it.
And I'm going to have Minnesota make it.
you do realize last year's standings, it's not going to look like that.
Every year, eight coaches on average get fired.
We thought it was going to be three.
It was eight or nine.
And every year, half the playoff teams are out, half stay.
Who's going to stay?
Brady and Tampa, Rams.
I think it's fairly predictable.
I'm going to give Cincinnati the benefit of the doubt.
Buffalo feels like a pretty safe bet.
I do think Kansas City makes it in a different position.
But, listen, quarterbacks won the best division.
and if you look at my picks,
I've mostly got the best quarterback
winning every division. Josh Allen,
Russell, Russell Wilson,
slow down, slow down, slow down, slow down.
They'll both get in.
I think Wentz is the best quarterback in that division.
Many say Dak, I think Wentz is more physically gifted.
Matt Stafford.
