Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:01:05 A win is a win. I don't care which I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes,
Starting point is 00:01:24 creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:42 Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports Radio and noon to 3 Eastern 9 a.m. to noon Pacific. Find your local station for the herd at Fox SportsRadio.com or stream us live every day on the IHeart Radio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. We're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go, hour two. Greg Olson this hour.
Starting point is 00:02:09 Live in Los Angeles, it's the herd wherever you may be. However, you may be listening. Thanks for making us part of your day. I was thinking about this, J-MAC, is that the world, you know, it's changing all the time. And that the senior bowl is where all the GMs in the NFL go. it's Jim Maggie runs it. Great, great senior bowl.
Starting point is 00:02:31 They now include juniors. So the Senior Bowl is not the Senior Bowl. They have juniors. The NIL, I've had cousins, friends complain about the NIL, the transfer portal, is things change. And I was talking a couple nights ago to a friend of mine who happens to be in the league as a top executive. And he was telling me a story about how. owners now are so rich that when Matt Rule
Starting point is 00:03:03 was coaching Carolina he told this executive, I've got plenty of time. He's not going to write a $50 million check and get rid of me. And the executive said oh yes he will. And a week later he did. Is that the downside to global wealth that creates some opportunities and medical advances and blah, blah, blah,
Starting point is 00:03:24 it also has made the NFL owners many of the richest sports owners in the world, much more impulsive and much less patient. So generally, if you cover the NFL, you're a Peter Schrager, a Glazer, you know, by about week like seven or eight, you start writing those stories or hearing, hey, we got a coaching hot seat. And there'll be a couple of guys on the hot seat. And that's how I've always kind of felt the league should be covered.
Starting point is 00:03:51 But it's different now. The senior bowl has juniors that because it's a rounding air, I mean, you saw a lot. Jerry Jones's yacht. I mean, these guys now, they all own, you know, 300-foot yachts. They own multiple teams. They own soccer teams. They own multiple stadiums. I mean, Stan Cronkey, the Rams owns more commercial real estate than almost anybody, maybe
Starting point is 00:04:13 in the world or America, multiple teams, multiple arenas. Good for them. They're just not going to sit around and wait to be good. And so I think in September next year, there are seven or eight coaches, and many of them good coaches are on the hot seat because they have a quarterbacker expectations. I think Matt Eberfluse has to show signs that he can coach a young, talented quarterback in September. Sean McDermott's an excellent coach.
Starting point is 00:04:42 You can't keep losing home playoff games with Josh Allen. McCarthy's got a ring. It's already been announced. Mike's got one year left. Siriani almost won a Super Bowl. Last year was an abject disaster. Peterson, with Nick Foles, beat Brady and Belichek. But what happened to the Jags this year with Trevor Lawrence is hard to explain.
Starting point is 00:05:03 I think it's understandable. Robert Sala would acknowledge he's got a win and win early with Aaron Rogers, or he's in trouble. I was surprised Dennis Allen was retained. He's won about 35, 37 percent of his games as a head coach. You paid a lot of money to Derek Carr. You got a lot of win and start winning some games. You got to make the playoffs, right? So I think it's a different time in the NFL where owners have more money.
Starting point is 00:05:24 $45 million is a rounding air. you'll just write something off and start over. Hopefully not as impulsive as David Tapper, but that's the reality of it. Jerry Jones is at the Senior Bowl, because he views himself as the GM of the Cowboys, and he talked about it's kind of funny, Mike McCarthy's
Starting point is 00:05:43 status. I thought we made a pretty good move four years ago when we hired Mike McCarthy, and he's had some great in-season success. Now, he's come up short three times, but I I like the fact that he's hanging around the rim.
Starting point is 00:05:59 And I like what the team has done to hang around the rim. Not getting the ball in, but we're hanging around the rim. Let's don't discount hanging around the rim. And where we are right now with the players we've got, and I'm thinking about it from the whole look. So I don't think the organization is over-committed to Mike McCarthy. There's no coaching salary cap. you can move off Mike
Starting point is 00:06:27 you can move off Mike and trade deadline you can move off him fourth game of the year you can move off him at Thanksgiving I don't think the team's over committed to Mike I don't think he's a bad coach I think the question becomes how committed are you to DAC
Starting point is 00:06:43 whose cap hits like 55 large next year and he is not a 55 million dollar quarterback here's Jerry on deck and the top personnel with the Cowboys. I would anticipate with looking ahead
Starting point is 00:07:01 at our key contracts that we'd like to address. We'll be all in. And it will be going all in on different people than you've done in the past. We'll be going all in. We've seen some things
Starting point is 00:07:14 out of some of the players that we want to be all in on. And yes, I would say that you will see us this coming year not building for the future is the best way I don't say it and that ought to answer a lot of questions all right Micah C.D. Lamb, I totally get. They're elite players.
Starting point is 00:07:37 But if you think about Dak Prescott's career in just the divisional round, this is not the Super Bowl, it's not even the conference championship, in just the divisional round. Some of these been home games. 0 and 3 with an 88 passer rating with offensive coaches. So I think the Cowboys issue is they're over committed to DAC financially. His best, that 13 and 3 year, number 1 O line in the league, Zique was arguably the best running back.
Starting point is 00:08:12 I think Tony Pollard's a free agent. Who's your running back next year? DAC is not a 39 to 44 pass a game guy. Listen, I love Lamar Jackson. Jackson. But he had 46 dropbacks last week. That's not his game. That Mahomes, I would prefer having about 38. You start getting into 40, 45 drops, even four dropbacks for a Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow. It's too many. First of all, you put them in the crosshairs of getting banged up and hurt. But all this stuff on Mike McCarthy.
Starting point is 00:08:44 Mike McCarthy has some clock management limitations. I thought they were completely worked by in Green Bay. But if you're paying your quarterback, $5,000. 55 large, he's got to be in that Mahomes class. He's got to be, you can say all you want about Lamar Jackson. Lamar Jackson beats good teams. I watched him crush the Niners this year and crush Miami this year and crush Detroit this year. Lamar Jackson wins a lot of game.
Starting point is 00:09:06 He didn't win a lot of games in January, but he won one. But, I mean, that to me is the issue. Mike McCarthy is fine, right? Like, he's got a trophy. So that's where we are there. Greg Olson shows up in about seven, eight minutes. we appreciate that stopping by for us. So, you know, the other thing we talked about earlier today is I was watching the Golden State Warriors play last night.
Starting point is 00:09:35 And I think it's really fascinating is that the NBA is going through a really weird time where Stefan LeBron have been the most popular players in the league for about 12 to 15 years. And so Saturday night, Stefan LeBron came out and played. It was a tremendous game. It got the highest non-Christmas regular season rating in like five years. But what's funny about the NBA is it's getting so international. And some of these international guys, they don't have, they don't, you know, like post-Michael Jordan, the league struggled to figure out who's the next group of guys.
Starting point is 00:10:07 And the NBA lost 50% of its ratings post-Michael. Well, Steph's not as popular as Michael, and LeBron's not either. But combined, if you look at the numbers, they are. And as I watched that game Saturday night, my takeaway is, who's the next LeBron and Steph? Because it's a real thing. These sports are all being engulfed by pro football, much like everything outside of hockey in Canada
Starting point is 00:10:33 or the English Premier League in London. We're becoming very much Europe. Where the NFL's numbers now, it is engulfing everything. And the NFL, to its credit or not, has quickly spotted its rivals and outside of college football went after the NBA on Christmas. They said, no, we're not going to give you that day. We're not giving it to you.
Starting point is 00:10:57 And this year, those NBA ratings on Christmas, their big marketing day of the year, disappeared. And so it was interesting watching that game. And I'm an NBA fan. But when Embed says, I can't play against Yokic, that is a major problem. Aunt Edwards does not have a national poll. SGA doesn't have that.
Starting point is 00:11:21 Yokic doesn't have it. Janice has a little bit with Dame. Celtics have a little bit because they've gotten close. But watching that game Saturday night, I'm not a big romanticizer, but I'm thinking, who's the next two guys to do this? It's a great question, Colin. I'll go back a couple years in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:11:41 Do you remember when Peyton Manning and Brady were winding down their dynastic battles? Yes. Everybody loved their postseason. And then Peyton retires, oh, who's going to be the foil to Brady? And then Brady League. Well, who's next? The next stars just always step up. But remember.
Starting point is 00:11:57 Josh Allen comes out of nowhere. Patrick Mahomes five years ago, nobody knew who he was outside of Kansas. But the NFL is a domestic league. So the stars always come from here. We've watched them at Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Bama, Oklahoma, Texas. That's easy viscerally to sell to fans. They watched them. I mean, I can't wait to watch Marvin Harrison play in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:12:17 and Caleb Williams. I can't wait to watch Bo Nicks, Brock Bowers of Tennessee, or of Georgia. But the basketball stars now are all coming from Lithuania and Serbia and Croatia and Germany and France. And we don't watch their
Starting point is 00:12:35 international basketball. So they show up to the league. They're on bad teams for about four years. We don't watch bad teams in the NBA. And the NBA is now trapped because they don't want to put those teams on TV. They want to go to LeBron. and Steph and the Celtics.
Starting point is 00:12:50 So as I watched LeBron and Steph, my takeaway is, that's your marquee game in the week. And they went, Steph and LeBron. They don't do load management. They got 15 years of build-in. They're iconic. The NFL's in a great space. Mahomes is young.
Starting point is 00:13:08 Alans young. Lamar's young. Herbert's young. Trevor Lawrence Young. Caleb Williams is coming. Here comes Drake May. NFL stars are overwhelmingly kids. But we didn't.
Starting point is 00:13:17 again, Lamar Jackson coming out of Louisville, like, oh, he's a nice player, is even a first round pick. And now he's like a legitimate bankable star. So these guys turn into stars. Mahomes was, come on, man, coming out of Texas Tech, Mahomes was nobody. He was a guy with a cannon who played against joke defense. I'm not denying the NFL found him,
Starting point is 00:13:34 but the NFL's never going to be an international league. That's not, they don't have that labyrinth of college football in Europe. So for like the NBA, Steph Curry, like listen, he was a good story at Davidson. If Steph Curry and LeBron retire tomorrow, Who's the face? Mal Holmes could leave tomorrow. There's seven guys.
Starting point is 00:13:51 It's going to take a year or two for the NBA. A year or two? A year or two? Someone to crystallize. It took the NBA post-David Stern, a marketing genius, about eight years. Yeah, but... Thank God Kobe and Shaq saved the league. Fortunately, Curry and LeBron are not going anywhere.
Starting point is 00:14:04 Curry's still averaging like 30 a night. No, Curry's great. LeBron's great. Yeah, yeah. But the NFL's got a... Their model, they get another 10 guys tomorrow. I mean, people are not going to understand how big Herbert's going to get with Harbaugh. They're going to be on Thursday, Sunday.
Starting point is 00:14:17 Monday. That's going to blow up. Even baseball. Remember, baseball was like, oh, there's Mike Trouts, the biggest star. Otani comes out of nowhere and is a massively huge to the sport. Like, we, I mean, not to get egotistical, you and I can help, along with the media, make some of these guys superstars by talking about them. No, no, no, no, but because they're interesting on a nightly basis, we get into them, whether it's football players, baseball, soccer, whatever. I think the NFL model, which is domestic, we all watch them, the draft. It just, and it gives you microwavable stars. I couldn't wait. I didn't think he was any good, but I couldn't wait to watch Tebow in the NFL. There's very few. Wembe is one of the last 10 years. Wemby's one of the only guys I'm like, I want to watch his first game.
Starting point is 00:15:02 I didn't see SGA's first game. And the everything is NFL, college kids come into the NFL. They're 23 years old. Many are married. They're ready to, Jamar Chase was a star. The best NBA players are 19. So even when they come in, they can't even drink at the whole. hotel bar. So it's really hard. I think the NBA
Starting point is 00:15:21 is in a weird thing. I like the international part of the league. I think these guys are great. I freaking love Yokic. I love Wemby. I love all these guys. But I think it's a harder sell in these numbers when the Celtics heat get beat by a women's college basketball game. Is that not a little bit of a well, that's not Hawks Kings. That's not magic wizards. Caitlin Clark is is a comment. No, she's crazy. By the way, so my family went east for the holiday break. Clark happened to be playing Rutgers. They're like, we've got to get tickets.
Starting point is 00:15:49 Yes. They went to the game, sold out. Mob scene afterward to get Caitlin Clark's autograph. She is one of those like transcendent stars. No, no question. Zion Williamson, like. No, that's great. But I think the NFL model with three and four years of massive TV ratings in college feeding you Baker Mayfield, whether or not I thought he was going to be good, he walked into the league as a partial villain. I don't know the basketball guys from Dusseldorf well enough to like him or hate him.
Starting point is 00:16:15 I don't know. I don't, you know, I don't watch European. tape? Yeah. Listen to Stuff to Blow Your Mind on the iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever. you get your podcast. All right, Seahawks just announced. They're going to, Mike McDonald is going to be the Baltimore Ravens
Starting point is 00:18:55 defensive coordinator is going to be the Seattle Seahawk new head coach. He's 36 years old, so there's a pivot in the NFL to younger coaches. D'Amico Ryan's has been sensational. You know I like offensive coaches. The last five Super Bowls, 10 out of 10 coaches offensive.
Starting point is 00:19:13 I do think defensive coaches, especially young ones when they get the star quarterback can win a lot of games. They can't do it with a backup like a Shane Steichen. They're not going to do it with Brock Purdy. But if you give them a Josh Allen, a Lamar Jackson, you can give a defense. I don't think defensive coaches are going to elevate a C plus B minus quarterback to another level like an Andy Reed, McVeigh, or Shanahan could. Or Matt LaFlewer did marvelous things. But a defensive coach, I've been saying this about Seattle.
Starting point is 00:19:44 They're the one team. They've got really good players and draft capital. I think I'd move some of those pieces to go up and get somebody or sit around and get a bow Knicks from Oregon. I just think Seattle's a quarterback shy of being really, really interesting, so they have their head coach. And we have Greg Olson, who we love. Fox Sports.
Starting point is 00:20:05 Three pro bowl's 14 years. You know, I'm going to throw this at you because I've been on this thing now, ad nauseum for years. It's probably irritating. but I do think as the league has pivoted to offense, it's a different language. It's just Reed, McVeigh, Lefleur. I don't think Jordan Loveon proves that much in a defensive culture. And so I'm not anti-defensive coach, but you were in this league forever.
Starting point is 00:20:29 You had defensive coaches. And my takeaway is, as the culture has changed, there are some innate advantages to the offensive side. So if I see a Rahim Morris or Mike McDonald, I'm a little, concern, but is that hyperbolic or overstated? Yeah, it's funny. In my 14 years, I only played for defensive coaches. I played for Lovy Smith, Ron Rivera, and P. Carroll. So I've only played on teams that were run from the defensive side and the defensive point of
Starting point is 00:21:00 view. And listen, there's a lot of really good examples. I mean, of guys who've had a lot of success in Mike Tomlin and, you know, you can go around McDonald now, just getting hired by Seattle. I mean, there's a lot of examples. I think the reason why teams. teams gravitate towards offensive coaches is because typically to get an offensive play caller in your building, you have to make him the head coach.
Starting point is 00:21:23 And the greatest connection between the quarterback is with his play caller. And if you have success, success is going to get your staff poached. Look what's happened to Sean McVeigh, right? Every coach on his staff over the years has been poached. But what has always stayed the same? The play caller has stayed the same. If Sean McVeigh was a defensive coach and they've had the same exact success, every time these guys were plucked off his staff, his quarterback, Goff and now Stafford,
Starting point is 00:21:50 would have had to work with a new play caller. And it's just teams don't want turnover for their quarterback. And if you anticipate success, your play caller, if it's not your head coach, he's going to get plucked away from you and teams don't want that revolving door. There's always a lot more defensive coordinators available. I mean, how would you like to be Philly? you fire Sean DeSye and all of a sudden Vic Fangio falls in your lap. I mean, that's a pretty good, that's a pretty good defensive coordinator.
Starting point is 00:22:16 So it's not so much that defensive coaches aren't great coaches. They are. I mean, Bill Belichick, I mean, you can go down the list. They're just harder to find guys to change the game on offense. So if you can get them in the building, you've got to make them a head coach. So you're one of the best tight ends I've ever seen. And I go back to Kellan Winslow, Gronk, Travis, Kelsey, are probably the three. best I've seen. There's been other good ones,
Starting point is 00:22:40 Tony Gonzalez, Shannon Sharp. But I want you to because some of it's Mahomes, some of it's Andy Reed. But when you watch, because you really break this stuff down so well, his feet, his hands, he made some catches the other day, and this guy's 10 surgeries in.
Starting point is 00:22:57 This was backyard stuff. And, you know, it's funny. It's almost the more we doubted him all year. I'm like, he's got a podcast. He's got Taylor Swift. He's getting old. Every time I see him, he's limping. And I'm like, Yeah, it doesn't matter. He's really good. But what do you see from the position as an expert?
Starting point is 00:23:14 What does he do that I don't see maybe or that is elevated beyond what I can grasp? Yeah, I mean, the physical stuff is clear, right? He's tall. He can run. He's got unbelievable quickness. For a guy of his size to have the footwork to get in and out of breaks and stop and start, that's unique, right? So you couldn't have the success in the production that he has if you didn't have the physical qualities. and the physical tool. So we'll set that aside.
Starting point is 00:23:42 What makes him such a nightmare is when San Francisco this week has their scout team tight end running Travis Kelsey and he's wearing an 87 jersey and he is Travis Kelsey, he's going to run the routes that are on the card, right? The coach is going to hold up the scout team card and he's going to run 10 yards and run a dig or he's going to run 10 yards and run a corner. It's going to look like real routes. Travis Kelsey is improvising his routes the vast majority of the time. And I say that as a compliment.
Starting point is 00:24:13 Him and Mahomes have a unique understanding that Kelsey knows, okay, this is the timing of the drop. This is where I'm supposed to get to. How I get there is not as important as be where the quarterback expects me to be at the end of the route. And for a defense to not really know what that is going to feel like, it's hard to prepare for all week. the guy caught the ball two yards inside the numbers,
Starting point is 00:24:36 and that's where I think he's going to be. But that's not where Kelsey's going to be. He's going to run to open space. And Mahomes and him have the best connection. It's approaching the best connection of all time. You can say Brady and Gronk right now hold that mantle. But it's hard to prepare for guys when the routes are not what we always expect them to be. And find space, if you're open, stay open.
Starting point is 00:24:59 And he's got a quarterback that can throw the ball from any platform at any moment, and the ball's put on them. The combination of those two guys, they're unpredictable, and you just can't prepare for them in the conventional way that you prepare for most guys who are running things like it looks on a piece of paper. So here's my concern with San Francisco going into the Super Bowl. I've watched Mahomes minus 27 degrees at Buffalo, at Baltimore, have 12 great quarters. And some of his greatness is in the game against Baltimore,
Starting point is 00:25:28 just not making a mistake, kind of game managing, which I think is the next level of greatness, for a quarterback is, oh, I don't have to be great. Josh Allen sometimes is so great. He grates his way into some, you know, failures. But I've watched Brock Purdy in four first half quarters, Green Bay and Detroit. This is with the schemes of Shanahan, turbulent, choppy. And I'm like, the AFC is better than the NFC.
Starting point is 00:25:57 And Mahomes has had 12 really good quarters. And Brock's had five, eight quarters when I thought golf and Jordan Love outplayed him. I would think, if you had told me before I saw it, Brock Purdy will have really good halves, I would have said first half, right? Like Shanahan's schemes. Now, Detroit, some of it, he couldn't get the ball because they dominated. But should I be concerned, what does it tell me when he was outplayed in the first half by Jordan Love? He was outplayed badly by Jared Guff.
Starting point is 00:26:23 Why is that I would think Shanahan's schemes, that would be the half he would excel. Yeah, I think the biggest compliment that we can give Purr, is as long as Kyle Shanahan's been the head coach of the 49ers, they have been a dominant team, you know, their track record of NFC championships, Super Bowl appearances, all that's been well chronicled. They have never been a good team playing from behind. That's just never been their style.
Starting point is 00:26:50 They're a play from the lead. They're an under center, play action, half boots. You're not made to come back from 10 points in that style. Brock Purdy has brought them the ability to play more out of the traditional shotgun, to play more from behind, more in uptempo, two-minute. And we've seen in the two biggest games of the year, something we haven't seen from this San Francisco team in seven years, two weeks in a row against the wall against Green Bay,
Starting point is 00:27:16 and then down 17 at half. It looks like the end of the world's coming at the half last week against Detroit. To add the ability to play from behind is an element that this Kyle Shanahan offense has just never had. And now, when they do find their early rhythm with the run game with McCaffrey and Debo and the play action stuff to IU can kiddle. That's when they're at their best, right? The under center play pass,
Starting point is 00:27:37 and that's the core element of this scheme of why it's so good. Now all of a sudden you factor in, hey, I got a quarterback that can also play from the gun. Hey, I got a quarterback that can also play off scramble and pick up plays with his legs or throw off scramble and pick up big plays. I mean, it's just not what we've seen the quarterback position for Shanahan be able to do in the past,
Starting point is 00:27:57 and that's not a knock on Jimmy G or any of these guys. Purdy deserves a lot of that credit. and the trust that Shanahan has to put him in the gun and say, okay, we're going to throw the ball 25 times this half because we've got to come from behind. That's new. And I think he deserves a lot of credit. And obviously Mahomes is unique, right? Mahomes has played that shotgun style.
Starting point is 00:28:16 The games on my shoulders for the last three, four years. And that's nothing new to all of us. We've seen Mahomes do this now time and time again. The difference in Kansas City is this is a defensive lead unit. right mahomes is an all-timer kelsey's an all-timer Andy reed those guys on offense deserve all the credit in the world Steve spagnolo in this defense that is the story of the Kansas City chiefs
Starting point is 00:28:41 they might not get all the headlines and they might not be the center of attention but the reason they're in the Super Bowl is that defense finally you know there's an old saying generals have to separate from the you know the troops right you have to have some separation from the infantry and the general because you're going to have to make tough decisions. It's why my bosses don't go out and have a cocktail with me. I get it, right? Right? Got to be a little separation. And I think my knock on Dan Campbell, I defended him. I said, listen, he's true to who he is.
Starting point is 00:29:13 They leaned on their strength, their O line. He's completely authentic. He at times is reckless. I will defend him on all that because Baltimore didn't even bring the same game plan to the table. I don't know what the heck that was. Oh, I know what that was for Detroit. I've been Washington for 18 weeks. That's who they are. But I do think there's one thing where he has to, and the lack of a better term, grow up. Sometimes he coaches
Starting point is 00:29:37 like a player. And I want to go, you're a coach. Like the Dallas situation. I'm like, come on, Dan. You're not a player. Or is that fair? Are we getting into a new era where the coach is more
Starting point is 00:29:53 the player? Younger coaches, closer and age, generationally, to players. How do you view Campbell's sort of player-like emotional state on play calling? Yeah, so I'll take it as two separate pieces. So first, his personality and wearing his emotions on his sleeve and the love he's not afraid to be vulnerable, he's not afraid to put himself out there, whether it's in a post-game press conference or midweek or in his locker room speeches to his players. He is very consistent in that regard, and he's very unapologetic.
Starting point is 00:30:25 I think that's a big reason why when you speak to God. and Taylor Decker and Pene Soule and the veteran, the leaders of this group, they can't say enough about this guy. And it's not your typical, what's a player going to bash his coach? Like, it's not your typical player, just coach speak and, y'all, he's a great guy. Like, it is genuine. The love they have in that locker room for Dan Campbell is genuine. So I'll say I think it's a big reason for their success.
Starting point is 00:30:51 I don't think it's a coincidence. I think the connection they have between him and their identity and that locker room is a big reason they flipped it in three years. As far as his play calling, and as far as his, you know, what people, you know, they want to call him reckless, they want to call him, I think it's important to point out,
Starting point is 00:31:09 reckless is when you make the decision in the moment just off emotion. That is not what Dan Campbell is doing. Those decisions were made last week. Those decisions were made three years ago. In fourth and three, we are going to go for it every single time. And I think it's,
Starting point is 00:31:27 it's important to differentiate between, yes, he's an emotional guy and yes, on the sideline, it appears that it's all being caught in the moment. It's the exact opposite, right? The people that want him to take the points, people that don't like the fourth down fake punts and all that, those are emotional reactions to outcomes you don't like. Dan's actually the one removing emotion, removing gut feel, and saying, no, we are 14 of 17 on the year and fourth and three. That is better than my kicker from 48. The notion that I'm turning down the points is just not true. It's just not mathematically accurate.
Starting point is 00:32:06 And I think the response to that is actually more emotional than the way Dan is approaching it. By the way, I thought about this. So Harbaugh, his hype videos out, and I love the guy. But I do forget that he's been out of the NFL for nine years. And he is quirky. The league has changed. but I think his physicality sort of transcends college pro. That's my take.
Starting point is 00:32:31 If I said to you, 11 wins, second to the chiefs, is, you know, from where they were, I mean, do you see anything being an issue with Jim? Because nine years, Greg, there's a lot of rule changes, culture changes. You think he's going to be a hit or no? I think it's hard to anticipate him not being good. I mean, the guy has won literally at everything. level and literally wherever he has coached college, small school, you know, Stanford, Michigan,
Starting point is 00:33:04 the 49ers. I mean, we went head to head with that 49ers group, you know, call it 2010 to 13 or whatever that span was. They were incredible. So, I mean, I just, it's hard to bet against them. I mean, when you have a track record of success at all levels, all levels of college and both and the NFL, there's a reason that he is who he is. And I, and he might be quirky. He might have his own way, of doing things, but when he steps in front of that locker room, these players are well aware of what he's accomplished. They are well aware of the expectation and the winning standard that he creates everywhere he goes. And the guys that are able to match that standard are going to find themselves on the way out. And the guys that rise to that standard and embrace it are going to be the guys
Starting point is 00:33:46 that help turn that thing around because there's no doubt that Chargers team has a lot of pieces, obviously starting with the quarterback, that they should be a contender in that division at the bare minimum. So I'm with you. I don't, if you talk about you, if you talk about, told me they're going to win 11 games and compete there at Mahomes and whatnot. Yeah, I'd say that sounds right. It's when you have the track record of success that he has and the ability to replicate it in all scenarios, not just a very unique situation. He only wins when he has a great quarterback or only wins when he has a great defense.
Starting point is 00:34:15 He's won in a bunch of different ways at a bunch of different levels, and I think that speaks volumes. Greg Olson, Fox Sports. Good seeing you. Great work as always, buddy. Love what you do. Appreciate it. All right, thanks.
Starting point is 00:34:31 You back. Greg Olson. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Starting point is 00:37:13 or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to Stuff to Blow Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your point. podcast. This year, resolved to keep your family safer than ever. Go to simply safe, colin.com. There's no safe like simply safe. 20% off your new system with a fast protect plan. Jay Mack with the news. No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 00:37:43 So your friend and my neighbor, Chip Kelly, has been at UCLA since 2018, but it sounds like a lot of NFL teams are trying to get him to be an OC, Colin. He had spent four years in the NFL as head coach of the Eagles and Niners. I don't... Is this a leverage play from you? No, I mean, I think my takeaway is the collective, the NIL collective at UCLA is pretty Spartan compared to Ohio State, Michigan, USC, Oregon, Washington. And he does, I think he feels he has a competitive disadvantage. And also, I mean, UCLA is a basketball school.
Starting point is 00:38:20 They have nice facilities. I'd love to see him stay, but he's testing the waters. UCLA has always had this feeling, and I say this lovingly because I have so many UCLA friends, they've always kind of lacked a clarity on what they are in college football. They're about a 7-8 win team, and he just crushed USC in their high-paid, better collective transfer portal-driven rival. And so I've said this before. I would appreciate him.
Starting point is 00:38:46 You're not going to find a Chip Kelly on the market. So they go to the Big Ten, correct? Yep. Okay. Where do you think they rank in terms of collective NIL money? Oh, no, no. Bottom half. Yeah, yeah. Below Michigan. Definitely not top half. They're not Michigan State. They're not Ohio State. They're not Penn State. They're not U.S.C. Probably in that class. Are they Iowa? I bet you they're not as good as Iowa. They're not Washington or Oregon. Oregon's loaded. U.S.C.'s close. Okay, so from an NIL front, they're not a juggernaut. However, I'll take Chip Kelly, no disrespect.
Starting point is 00:39:21 Kirk Ferrence or Oh, no. Hey, in college or pro, give me an offensive coach. Right, right. So they can still compete and win, like you said, eight or nine games, but the playoff is going to be a tall order.
Starting point is 00:39:32 Yeah, I think it's a tall order for them. If I had to guess the four teams now that over the next five years are going to make the playoff from the Big Ten, Ohio State's done. Oregon, I think Lincoln and Riley's going to come back fine. And then I think it's...
Starting point is 00:39:48 Whoa, whoa, whoa. You put the USC in the playoff? Yeah, third or fourth team out of the Big Ten, yeah. I'll take that. They've had the number one offense in the country the last two years. They're fine. Caleb Williams, a transcended quarterback. Who are they got now?
Starting point is 00:40:02 So I said Ohio State lock it in. That's locked in. I think Oregon's a lock it in. You've got a good quarterback. And then I think it's up for debate, but I would take after that Penn State, Washington, USC. There's a lot of turnover at those states. Michigan's coming back a little bit. I'm worried about it.
Starting point is 00:40:19 I think Michigan, there's no other harm on the market. They're losing 15 to 18 NFL guys. I'm not downplaying it, but I would say, or Michigan over the next five years is going to be closer to Washington, USC, than they are to Ohio State in terms of consistent. Next year, Ohio State, that's my one bet to win than that. Yeah, Ohio State's going to be a better team next year. So UCLA, like, reasonable expectations, 7, 8, 9 wins. I think if they could win eight games going forward, all things considered NIL, and filling their stadium now with Badger fans, Buckeye fans, much more revenue,
Starting point is 00:40:58 not as much debt service, you'd have to be happy. So it's better that or like the Tampa Bay Bucks OC job? I'm just picking a team out of 10-air. Well, no, I wouldn't take the Tampa Bay Bucks' OC job. What? But if you gave me that... What? I'm not leaving UCLA unless there's about four or five of them.
Starting point is 00:41:16 You know, if you gave me a Justin Herbert. Oh, that's not happening. Or if you give me a Mahomes, I would, you know. Come on. I'm just saying there's not many. Seattle. Seattle. Let's say McDonald calls him. Chip, I want you to come home.
Starting point is 00:41:27 I think he would strongly consider it. He's got ties to the Pacific Northwest. You don't sniff? Can you? Well, that's not the future. They're going to go get a quarterback. What if your future, by the way, is Bo Nix? What if Mike McDonald says, you tell me which quarterback out of the Pac-12 to take?
Starting point is 00:41:43 And that's part of the deal. Knicks or Panics? Okay, all right. Little creativeness. I like that. I don't know about next that high. We'll see. Next up, ooh, Stefan Diggs.
Starting point is 00:41:53 Collin, the stories are starting to circulate. You know, he had another 1,000-yard season. Whoopty damn due. According to Peter King, the bills are expected to ask Diggs to rework his contract this off-season, which Diggs would not be happy about. A separation seems unlikely, but the team could save $18 million in Catspace if they release him with a June 1st designation. It's very complicated.
Starting point is 00:42:19 The staff, all the mathy people on the staff this morning said, you could get rid of him before June 1st, but then you have a cap hit. If you trade him, it's more of a cap hit if you trade him quickly, but if you wait until later, it's not the cap pit, but the draft is already over. So it's a lot more complicated. After listening to the staff, get a little mathy with me this morning.
Starting point is 00:42:42 I would probably keep him. although the facts presented to me this morning. I will say this. I think they've become less Stefan Diggs reliant. Josh, Cook, Kincaid, Dawson Knox. I like the Boise State. Little receiver, the gadget guy, I think's clever. Gabe Davis, they're not as reliant on him as I felt they were two years ago.
Starting point is 00:43:04 Pretty good receiver draft. I think it's a very big tell. I don't think they have a third pick. So I think they have a first and a second rounder. I would take a receiver in one of those picks. I'll just say Puka Nakua fifth round pick. Okay, things happen. Okay, all right.
Starting point is 00:43:18 All right. True, true, true. It'll be a big tell if the Buffalo Bills get a receiver stay in the second round. We'll know that Diggs is probably toast and saving that $18 million come June 1. The draft should be a big sign. Final story. Uh-oh. Here we go.
Starting point is 00:43:32 Lakers fell below 500 after another blowout loss. I mean, they got smoked by the rockets earlier this week, and then by the Hawks. Trey Young went off early in that one. LeBron, I don't know, in a word, he's not happy. Here's what he said about the state of the team right now. We could on any given night beat any team in the NBA. And then on any given night, we get an ass kicked by any team of NBA. It's totally, that's exactly what they are.
Starting point is 00:44:02 Listen, that's a lot of the league. But the big problem is, AD and LeBron are healthy, and they're circulating around 500. I saw The Ringer put out an article about should the Lakers? trade LeBron, a little bit of nonsense. No. But it does get interesting this offseason. I'll tell you right now, LeBron is over Darvinham.
Starting point is 00:44:22 He does not love Darvinham. Can I throw something at you? I'm not breaking news here. Austin Reeves? Stop! They're not trading Austin Reeves. I don't want to hear it. How has he been this year?
Starting point is 00:44:33 He's good. I couldn't hear you. He's good. He's on an amazing contract. He was scintillating in the playoffs when it matters more. So now you've got to pay him. And also, I don't know if you know, Austin Reeves went to him at the university. He is him.
Starting point is 00:44:46 And the Austin Reeves celebration, you need to get on board with Austin Reed. If the Lakers trade him, they're going to, fan base will be outraged. They'll sell their season tickets. I don't know about that. They'll be outraged on the internet. Trajee-Angelo Russell, ship Rui Hachimura. Okay. How is, hey, Ryan, can I get an honesty broker?
Starting point is 00:45:05 How's Austin Reeves done this year? 15 points a game. Well, there's more than just 15 points per game. Oh, yeah, there's the defensive lapses on the other end. He's a good, long defense. He's a plus defender. He's had some lapses this year. I'm being a smart, Alec.
Starting point is 00:45:21 I like Austin Reeves. Everybody in this world, probably including the ringer, had him as Jason Tatum, you know, without the handles. Like, can we slow down on him? He should be your best starter. He's a nice player. I like Austin Reeves. And I'd love to have him on my team. And LeBron likes playing with him.
Starting point is 00:45:38 But you guys all elevated him to like a two. See, the problem is, and LeBron knows this. There isn't a defender out there who comes in and helps his defense go from like 15th to the top 10. There isn't. You're not going to fight. Jeremy Grant ain't doing that. They should go the opposite and bring in my guy, Zach Levine, catch and shoot, gives you buckets off the bench. I'm telling you, man, this is an offensive league.
Starting point is 00:46:00 I don't think it's terrible. Lakers are like 27th or 30th in offense. I know. It's not terrible. Go get Zach Levine. I'm sorry, guys. Dejanta Murray ain't putting you over the top. He's not doing anything.
Starting point is 00:46:09 Zach Levine, make it happen. You know that's my guy. By the way. I will bring you to a Lakers game. By the way, the mathy guys on this staff, who I share so much affection with, the Lakers are minus 133 with Austin Reeves on the court, second worst on the Lakers. Because I watch Laker games pretty consistently.
Starting point is 00:46:30 I don't see what you're selling me. Okay. America needs to know Colin Coward is the best cherry picker of stats on planet Earth. The one data point. ship him out of town. Set into Orlando. One data point? Yeah, he has not been amazing.
Starting point is 00:46:46 But he's been in and out of the starting lineup. I'm not blamed Darwin Ham guy. Darwin Ham would, I mean, like, Lactorian Prince is like his son or something. He treats him like a king. Like he's amazing. He can't come out of the lineup. Laker fans have had it with some of this Darwin Ham stuff.
Starting point is 00:47:01 Dharvanham last night said, I'm not on social media. I don't know what's going on. Well, good for him. He's a grown-up. Maybe he needs to get on there and listen to some of the NBA. Oh, yeah. Twitter Bob.
Starting point is 00:47:10 Oh, yeah. Go to Reddit boards. That's where all the answers are. J. Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Ly News. I got to tell you, I'm so fired up for Jimmy Hardball.
Starting point is 00:47:24 That's what I'm going to start. I called Tom Brady yesterday, Tommy. I just came out of my mouth. I don't think Jim's Jimmy, though. Jim's Jim. You can't have the MI that thing there. All right, Greg Olson, money. Jordan Schultz coming up last hour.
Starting point is 00:47:37 There's some breaking stuff going on. on. It's the herd. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes.
