Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith ruling. of two. Here we go, live in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:02:36 It's the herd, wherever you may be, however you may be listening, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. It is hour number two, Trent Dilfer in about 10 minutes, and as Sean Payton, we'll be joining us next hour as well. J-Mack is joining us feeling great about his jets. You should be feeling great about your jets. Go to Green Bay, and they are a, I'm not giving sense. seven points up for Green Bay for anybody. It's funny, a month ago, the Jets have a stretch of facing Aaron Rogers and then Russell Wilson. And before the season, a month ago, they're like, oh, that's two losses.
Starting point is 00:03:11 I don't know about now, though. Denver's not very good, and Green Bay is struggling. They are. They're a one-half team. All right, we call it Colin right, Colin wrong. I take big swings. I'm off and wrong. We admitted on a Monday, and here we go.
Starting point is 00:03:24 Where Colin was right? I refused to put the Packers in my top 10. I got a lot of pushback, mostly from. Wisconsin and I kept saying they're a one-half team. They have no ability to throw the ball consistently down the field deep. You cannot be a Super Bowl team like this. I'm not even sure you're a great team. And by the way, what's up with their defense? Didn't we all think their defense would be excellent? Matt Lafleur, hello. Why isn't any better? Said this again. We have all decided, not me, but a lot of people have decided Matt LaFleur is an elite coach.
Starting point is 00:03:58 situationally, adjustments, elevating the passing game, I haven't seen it. Where Colin was wrong. Another two and three week blazing five. We're 11 and 10 on the year. We still have a winning record. But you know what?
Starting point is 00:04:13 You lose by a half a point here. You win by a half a point there. And I do apologize for picking the Steelers against the bills, which will go down as my worst pick in the history of the Blazing Five. It was over in five minutes and I do apologize. where Colin was right.
Starting point is 00:04:29 Baker Mayfield, a disaster in Carolina. When he came over, I said, listen, he's never going to have an offensive line like Cleveland. He will regret his immaturity because now the offensive line is below average. Welcome to the NFL. He's currently last in the NFL in pass-a-rating and completion percentage
Starting point is 00:04:47 and his entire career. He had Hugh Jackson, Matt Ruhl, Kevin Stefanski. He had offensive guys, so don't blame the coaching for everything. He had offensive guys. coaches. Some coaches never get an offensive coach. I got nothing against Baker, but I was right day one, and I'm right now. He's not a number one pick. He's not a unique athlete. He is a bottom tier starter for a non-playoff team. That's generally what his career I thought would be. Where Colin was wrong. I support Jared Goff all the time. But you know what? You got to be able to handle an occasional
Starting point is 00:05:22 road game. He was terrible this weekend. And I understand when Bill Belichick flung, comics is like a rookie or a second year quarterback. Jared Goss been in this league now, six, seven, eight years. You can't have a shutout on the road. He's never won a road game for the Lions. I don't think he has the greatest coaching staff, and they are missing some offensive pieces, but Jared Gough did me wrong. Where Colin was right? I said the best player I saw in college football was Soss Gardner, the Cincinnati Corner. That was the best college player I saw. And he has been an unbelievable player
Starting point is 00:05:57 for the Jets. Unbelievable. He'll take on anybody. He is long. He's athletic. He is fearless. He is a pro-bowl level corner as a rookie. And we said even though he was the fourth pick, I said that's by far the best college football player I saw play
Starting point is 00:06:13 all year long. And the Jets have themselves a lockdown playmaking corner for the foreseeable future. One of the key positions in this league now. quarterback, left tackle, edge rush, corner, wide receiver. I think they got the GM. I know they got the GM, and I know they also have their corner.
Starting point is 00:06:35 Where Colin was wrong. When Brent Venables got the Oklahoma job, my takeaway is, well, Oklahoma almost always gets the coach right, and he's an Oklahoma guy, and he was good at Clemson. He'll be fine. That's a good solid choice. Not only is it not a solid choice, I would move on at the end of the year and get Matt Rule. It is a disaster. He is not a head coach.
Starting point is 00:06:55 Folks, when you can't get your side of the ball right, 49-0-0 to Texas, it's a whiff. By the way, it's okay. Some people are born to be vice presidents. Some people are born to be CEOs. Some are vice presidents. It can't look like this. Tackling, coverages. It's a disaster.
Starting point is 00:07:16 And by the way, with a transfer portal now, do not be patient. Kids will move in a second. The Sooners will get cherry-picked. By the end of this season, they'll lose 20 players, especially offensive guys. Where Colin was right. Jimmy Garoppolo is now 35 and 15, and a 99 passer rating in his career as a starter. Do you know since the 1970 merger, the only quarterback with 35-plus wins on a higher passer rating over his first 50 starts is Mahomes? Yesterday, a classic Garoppolo.
Starting point is 00:07:51 109 passer rating, two touchdowns, no picks. He is simply a quick and accurate distributor of the football that makes very few mistakes. This football team in San Francisco is loaded, and it's loaded with players who are great after the catch. And Garoppolo's accuracy is outstanding, especially in tight spots. God, do I love me some Jimmy J. where Colin was wrong. UCLA hammered Utah. I've been saying this for the last two months.
Starting point is 00:08:28 Utah is the most complete football team in the PAC 12, top 20 offense and defense. They were undressed by UCLA. I think UCLA now is the best team in the conference. The Uts have played two really good teams, or I should say, two teams with a lot of talented guys. UCLA and Florida, they lost to both of them. Now, they're favored over UCLA,
Starting point is 00:08:48 but it should be noted UCLA has a very mobile quarterback, Caleb Williams and the Utes have struggled. They've struggled with mobile quarterbacks. Yeah, Uts are favored over USC. I'm not sure how I feel about that this morning. Where Colin was right? Yes, Draymond Green punching a teammate was ugly, but I said, folks, this happens a lot. Steve Kerr came out this weekend and said, quote,
Starting point is 00:09:12 I've seen this happen at least 20 times in my career. Players get in fist fights. Damien Lillard said, yeah, it's wrong, but I've seen not only that, I've seen that at college more than I've seen it in the pros. Yes, it's bad. Yes, Draymond Green should apologize. No, I don't like it. But this idea that it's outrageous, it's assault, he should be arrested.
Starting point is 00:09:35 Pro sports, you're talking alpha males, big dudes, want to get their way, trash talking. This stuff happens a lot. I'm not advocating it. I'm not for it. I think you should apologize, and Draymond's taking time on. But this idea, it is, this is outrageous. Steve Kerr says. I've seen fist fights 20 times in my career.
Starting point is 00:09:57 Where Colin was right? I said last week, every year we think there's five teams that can win championships in sports, and it's usually four, that the Mets are one of those teams that you think they can, but they can't. I loved them early in the year, but it became very obvious later in the year. They don't have enough sticks. They don't have enough hitters. Last night, they got a single hit. They scored one run combined in their two playoff losses.
Starting point is 00:10:21 I thought their story was great, a bunch of scrappy guys and two great pitchers. But in the end, you got to be able to in 2022. You got to have power. You got to have more hitters. They have one guy hitting over 300 in their entire lineup. And the Padres now move on a very, very talented Padre team, who, for the record, cannot beat the Dodgers. I think they've lost like nine series in a row to the Dodgers. With that, Trent Dilford, Lipscomb Academy head football coach in Nashville, Tennessee.
Starting point is 00:10:47 They won again this weekend. So I think, listen, I think fit matters a lot in life. I think Matt Rule is a great coach. He may not be a great coach in the NFL with average quarterback play. I would hire him in two minutes at an Oklahoma or any opening. What do you make of getting rid of him five weeks into this season? I don't think it's a bad decision. I agree with him.
Starting point is 00:11:10 I think he's a really good coach. I think it's kind of interesting, too, the timing of it all. It's the one-year anniversary, I believe, of John Gruden getting fired. You know, NFL loves chaos and agents love chaos. and you have Arizona State Open, you have Nebraska open, you have Georgia Tech open. You know, he is a college, big-time college head football coach. And if you're going to get rid of them, get rid of me now so I can start interfering for these college jobs. He didn't get the quarterback right in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:11:35 If you don't get the quarterback right in NFL, you're not going to win. It doesn't matter how good of a coach. He didn't get the offense coordinator right early on. You got to, in modern day NFL football, you have to get the offensive side of the ball right. You got to get the right coaches, get the right quarterback. you got to surround them with the right people. That's going to give you a longer leash as you rebuild a program. People want to see points.
Starting point is 00:11:58 They want to see productivity. They'll give you kind of a haul pass if you're not winning all the time, if you're productive and efficient offensively. And he couldn't get that right. At the NFL level, he's proven to do it at the college level to a very high level. Yeah. So I said this earlier. When Dak came into the league, the Cowboys ran the ball.
Starting point is 00:12:15 There were limitations on what they allowed Dak to do, and they played real good defense. Very clean. not a lot of turnovers. At some point, they decided, Dax's going to carry us. And it's like, that's not what he is. So Dallas now is doing what they did in Dax's first year. Lean into the run game. Keep it clean. You're a coach. We're not going to ask our quarterback to make certain throws.
Starting point is 00:12:37 We're going to keep this puppy clean under six penalties, no turnovers. And it's like, yes, this is what they could do. But my takeaway is Dallas has convinced himself at some level. that DAC can pull this team. And I like him. But I watched them yesterday and I'm like, this is Dak's rookie year. This is what they were.
Starting point is 00:12:58 Like, what do you see with what they're doing with their backup and winning now? I think this has been the greatest thing has ever happened to the offense coordinator of Kellynne Moore. He's called a boy genius. He's very creative and he is very, very good. But every coach, every play caller, has to kind of check themselves sometime and go back to what a winning formula is. That doesn't mean your risk adversity.
Starting point is 00:13:19 all the time, but it does mean you are a risk-averse at times. You've got to have a high-volume of carries. And this has gone on forever. If you have a high-volume of carries, your chances of going to go up. You got to play the strengths of your team. Even when you're calling offensive plays, when you have this defense that you can throw on the field, you've got to make sure you win the field position battle. You've got to make sure you're putting them in a good situation, not putting them in bad field position situations. You've got to limit turnovers. This is a winning formula that Kellan Moore has re-learned because he's had to. I think when DAC comes back, they can play the same style of football and just DAC being DAC, they'll add to their explosives.
Starting point is 00:13:57 He's a natural playmaker. He's going to add explosive plays. But it doesn't mean your volume of passes. It doesn't mean your pass protections go back to being stressed out. What they're doing right now is really sound. It is Mike McCarthy's best coaching job, in my opinion, because I'm sure he's been up in that office saying, hey, this is how you win under these circumstances. and you need to evolve as a play designer, play caller. So I think this is the best thing that's ever happened to Kellan Moore. I would expect him to maintain this existing profile of offense when Dak comes back. And Dak just being the quarterback will allow them to find more explosive plays within a game
Starting point is 00:14:34 without having to stretch themselves thin and adding risk. Listen, I don't think of myself as a real conservative football fan. I like the evolution. I like smart offense. but there are moments that I'm a law of average guy, and I watch Brandon Staley go for it, and I think, timeout. Cleveland's got no timeouts. It's Jacoby Brissette.
Starting point is 00:14:59 Make him go 65 yards. I hated that call. Keenan Allen went out to Twitter and went, what are we doing? You tell me you're a coach. What did you make of that chance? I couldn't believe it. I had to rewind the YouTube TV to make sure the situation was right. You know, I think what's happened is these guys have kind of started using the analytics as a crutch.
Starting point is 00:15:23 If you can just go by what the analytics say, then you have a hall pass in the post game press conference. You don't have to justify yourself. You just say, hey, this is what the analytics said. This is what I did. We're going to be ultra aggressive. We're going to play to win the game. All these things that the fan loves to hear. It's almost like teams are making these decisions because every, now I think it's three straight weeks in a row.
Starting point is 00:15:42 We've seen some crazy ones that are hidden under the analytics. umbrella. I think it's become more about winning the postgame press conference than it is about winning the game. I mean, there's no logic to say go for it there. There might be some spreadsheet with years and years of data saying in this situation, taking out momentum, taking out players. You mentioned Jacobi Percette, having to be the quarterback, taking away real substantive things that are involved in winning and losing. And it's just data that says, yeah, you win the game there. You don't give them a chance to get the ball. But in reality, like you just said, there was no logic behind it. You're not taking in the circumstances of this game when you make a decision
Starting point is 00:16:23 like that. So I think he's a great coach. But a lot of these guys, this new generation of head coach that are so locked into analytics, I don't know if it's their GM president's telling him to be this way or if it's their conscious decision. But when you have a 42 football your life like myself or some of the other gray hairs out there that have been around this game forever that have seen in-game situations where the gut is way better. than the piece of paper telling you what to do. You just know that that's not your best chance of winning. So my staff was very cynical this morning.
Starting point is 00:16:57 I saw the story over the weekend where Russell Wilson got a shot. His lat is torn. It'll promote healing. Now, my staff is like, oh, it's just, yeah, it's PR. And I'm like, well, if I had laryngitis, the show wouldn't be as good. If I was a quarterback in my lat's torn, I wouldn't be as good. This is why his deep ball accuracy has gone into the toilet this year. I think it's legitimate.
Starting point is 00:17:22 My team does not. They think it's PR. You tell me you're a quarterback. I'm going to read it to you. It says he got a, so it's been hurting him for weeks. No surgery, but it will promote healing. It's the lat. Well, I don't have a lat because I'm not strong enough to have one, but I know where it's at.
Starting point is 00:17:43 And I know it would hurt the throw of football. So tell me, do you think? think this is a little PR? Do you think there's something there? No, I think there's something there. I mean, if a guy's hurt, it's going to affect his quality of play. And I think you point out a really good piece of it. Now, maybe it's not extreme. Maybe it's not completely limiting him in all areas of throwing, but it would limit him in his body and his ability to generate rotational force and get the ball in the deep and be successful in the deep ball. And he's really struggled this year.
Starting point is 00:18:13 Yeah. And he's got speedy guys that can chase down the deep ball. So I think you pointed directly to one of the results of him being banged up. Now, I don't think it's their only issue. I don't think everybody's saying, hey, the only reason the Broncos are stinking is because this lat injury. I mean, they got some real dysfunctional issues on offense. But yeah, being a quarterback and having an injury like that would definitely affect you in some manner.
Starting point is 00:18:37 All right. Trent Dilfer, beyond the X's and O's with Trent Dilfer, his podcast. We love him on a Monday. That's why we always put him front and center. It's great seeing you again. Thanks, brother. Yeah. This morning, when I came out, deeply concerned about the well-being of Russell Wilson,
Starting point is 00:18:54 all I got in the meeting was groans. Ah, it's a PR move. And I'm like, timeout. You're a court. All I'm saying is this. He has always been two things, mobile and a beautiful deep ball thrower. I've seen him multiple times run this year, so he's not washed there. He's now a terrible deep ball thrower.
Starting point is 00:19:15 There's got to be a, you can't go from, if you had a 98, on our fastball, the next year you throw 91. There's got to be an issue there. Now, if he'd have gotten worse over the course of years, but this idea that he was as good a deep ball throwers as the league had, and now he's awful at it.
Starting point is 00:19:31 Am I, all I see with this story is courage. Well, Colin, I guess the big issue here is why announce this after arguably the worst game Russell Wilson has played in the last like three years? Well, because he didn't get the shot until after the game. But why not announce it before the game, and then I guess the counter to that is, well, then
Starting point is 00:19:47 the other team would just go after you with the shoulder. Yeah. And he really can't win, but something's really wrong with Russell Wilson. I just wonder, I don't want to go overboard. Remember Baker Mayfield in Cleveland, Colin? He had the opposite shoulder injured. He wanted to be a tough guy and play through it. It went very badly for him. I hope that's not the case with Russell Wilson here. But don't you think it's a little weird? If you were great at something, like digital, like this guy is so good on tech. And the next year you were bad at it, I'd be like, that's got to be explainable. It'd be one thing, you know, I mean, so.
Starting point is 00:20:17 Something has, you can't go from one of the best deep ball throwers in the last decade to at it. How about, we touched on this last week. D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett pretty good in Seattle on the deep balls. They look great yesterday with Gino Smith. They've made Gino Smith look like a great deep ball thrower. How much of Russ's success was D.K. and Lockett going deep in Seattle. I can't process that yet. What do you mean?
Starting point is 00:20:42 Geno's throwing bombs that look really darn good. All right. I'm not in any way. I'm not selling my rough stock, just to be clear. I'm just saying, is this idea, this story came out, and the internet, because he's a little cringy, everybody thinks, is like, oh, this is a manufacturer. And it's like, no, it was a real shot for a real thing. He's a quarterback. His lats all screwed up.
Starting point is 00:21:02 There's got to be some, because he can make all the short throws. Anything 12 and under, 15 under, I'm watching the games. He's fine. It's weird how the internet criticizes a lot of Lamar Jackson and Russell Wilson, huh? A lot of other guys get a pass. That's just strange. I don't know. It's weird.
Starting point is 00:21:17 I'm not hinting at anything at all. All I'm saying is I seal a profile and courage. Willing to let that story out. What do you get when you combine a three-time manager of the year at a three-time national sports writer of the year? It's the Book of Joe podcast. Hey, this is Tom Verducci from Fox Sports, MLB Network, and Sports Illustrated.
Starting point is 00:21:38 And I'm Joe Madden, and we're going to be around to talk a little bit about managerial decisions, playoff games, and what may have occurred in the dugout, maybe in the 1980s. I can't wait for this, Joe. We're going to dive into what goes on in the dugout and behind the scenes in Major League Baseball. Cars, wind, whatever else we want to talk about. Listen to the Booker Joe podcast on the IHeart Radio app, on Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:22:00 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays at noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
Starting point is 00:22:26 I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions,
Starting point is 00:22:44 my journey from basketball to college football or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes,
Starting point is 00:23:01 creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast. It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So, if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be.
Starting point is 00:23:27 Listen to The Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars. fan so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of taun tons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith Rule of Two. Listen to Stuff to Bole your mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Starting point is 00:24:12 Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with a little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:24:30 Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but literally. But just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed, correct.
Starting point is 00:24:45 So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Starting point is 00:25:02 Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Then later on, the Dodgers take on the Padres at 9 Eastern over on FS1 or stream it all on the Fox Sports app. Dodgers have owned the Padres despite. It should be a good series. Should be a great series. A J-Mac with the news.
Starting point is 00:25:30 No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the Heard Line News. So the Pittsburgh Steelers got pummeled. I mean, the worst loss of Mike Tomlin's career. I mean, not even competitive. I mean, it was, like you said, it was done in five minutes. It was a risky bet by you there to take me.
Starting point is 00:25:47 terrible bet by me. Take the Steelers. Kenny Pickett's first start didn't go well. They got a field goal on his first drive, did nothing after that. Tomlin, listen to man, he is not a happy camper. Here's what he said after the beat down. Satisfied with the effort, we just got smashed. Like, what are we talking about here, guys? We got to absorb the position that we're in, what transpired today. We got to know that there's going to be better days not to provide or to seek comfort, knowing that there's better days is going to be borne out of our commitment to making sure that they're better days.
Starting point is 00:26:19 And that's what I talked to the team about. But where we are today, not good. Well, I mean, Baltimore, Cincinnati, and Cleveland, once Deshaun gets back, you have three very, very high-end quarterbacks and Kenny Pickett. The question becomes, and this is why I believed in starting Kenny Pickett,
Starting point is 00:26:38 I wanted 17 starts, and then in a very rich quarterback class, I know what he is and what he isn't. So my takeaway is, you just got to play Kenny Pickett. I got to know what he is. And by the way, I wouldn't rule out draft in another quarterback. My executives that I leaned on all saw Pickett as a late, second, early third round talent. Does it mean he can't work?
Starting point is 00:27:03 I like him. I really liked him early in the season last year in college. And then I started leaning on my guys. And they're like, they're not a lot of special. It's just capable. My big take on straight fire today was I think the Steelers need to embrace the tank, Colin. I know it's not in Mike Tomlin's DNA. Pittsburgh fans are proud.
Starting point is 00:27:21 They have the toughest schedule the rest of the way. They have Tampa up next and then two more other games that are difficult. They're going to be one in seven heading into the buy. Pickett has no chance back there. None. I don't know. He was like a folk hero in Pittsburgh because of one year in college. Like look at his other three years.
Starting point is 00:27:36 He did nothing. Like, I just don't know. If I'm the Steelers, football outsiders put out odds for the number one pick. Pittsburgh has the second or third best, number one's Carolina by a mile. But if you're Pittsburgh, so you're going to get a chance. I mean, Seattle is scoring too many points. They're scoring too many. They're going to be out of it, and Pete Carroll's probably not happy.
Starting point is 00:27:55 But Pittsburgh was down three defensive starters going into the Buffalo game. Three more guys got injured and left. T.J. Watt, they have never won a game when he hasn't been on the field since he's been in Pittsburgh. O and 8. Colin, what are you rushing T.J. Watt back for? Like, I would just, I would cool my jets if I'm Pittsburgh. I know that's not easy to digest, but as a Jets fan, I know what tankings like. Sometimes you've got to go back to move forward.
Starting point is 00:28:18 One step backwards, two steps forward. That's right. That's right. It's an old jet saying. I thought it was Paula Abdul who said that. But anyways, the Philadelphia Eagles, let's get to a good team that can actually win games. Now, 5 and 0 did not cover the spread, but nice victory over the Cardinals holding on. Good win.
Starting point is 00:28:36 We're up 14-0. It looked like it was going to be an easy win, but Jalen hurts. Listen, man, this kid, could we do a segment on the quarterback sneak? Like, why don't everybody just get the quarterback and just run on fourth and one? Jaylor Hurts is automatic. They're becoming a little bit of Green Bay where they're very good. Half of the game, I love them. And then they kind of button it down and close it down.
Starting point is 00:28:58 They're not a great second half offense. And Kyler Murray got a lot of heat this morning for not knowing the clock. That's an incredibly makeable field goal. 43 yards, really? In the NFL. Kylear Murray? I thought it was a little overblown. Another quarterback people don't like
Starting point is 00:29:13 Kyler Murray. Maybe it could be video game stuff. I don't know what it is, but when I watched that game at the end, Kyler Murray gave you a chance to win. Ticket to win. I mean, the 43-yard field goal, those are made in high school. Those are absolutely, when you get under 45 yards in college or pro, I feel pretty good about that.
Starting point is 00:29:32 This was a guy they picked up off the practice squad because their other kickers hurt. But the big takeaway here, big picture. Arizona's defense was good in the second half. Yes. DeAndre Hopkins is coming back in two weeks. I would just say, given the Rams flailing, keep an eye on Arizona. No, I think it's a very legit. Potentially buy low. We like to buy low stocks. Yes. I think Arizona's potential. I watched that game in the second half, and my takeaway is Cardinals have a lot of talent.
Starting point is 00:29:54 They got a lot of good players. Yeah, they got something there. All right. Final story. The Giants, we got to go to the Packers. Listen, I was playing hoops yesterday morning, and it was 173, right? We're playing basketball. Right. Packers are going to roll. I come back. What the hell has? What happened to the Packers in the second half, Colin? How do you let the Giants with a quarterback on a bumwheel score five possessions in a row? Well, also long drives because the Giants, unlike the Packers, the Giants and the Cowboys are saying, here's our strength, let's lean into it.
Starting point is 00:30:25 And they just give the ball to Saquan Barclay. Long drives, ball control, and I don't know. I mean, I looked at it. You could have limitations as a team, but if you know your strengths and lean into it, him, you look at least like you're a capable well-coached team. The Giants look well-coached. Ceilings low, but very well-cote. You watch Brian Daible leaving the field, like yelling. I like that. I need energy. Here's what safety Xavier McKinney said about confidence in this team. We got a lot of good players in a show today. We knew what we had before. We didn't really need
Starting point is 00:31:01 anybody to tell us what we had or didn't have. We're proving it. Now, Colin, in the preseason, this was a team we talked about here on the show. Giants potentially frisky. They have a weird quarterback situation because remember they passed on Daniel Jones for the fifth year option. So now Dable's building a winner and a culture and he's going to have his pick of quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:31:21 I don't know what he's going to do. I think, did we talk about Jimmy Garoppolo maybe in New York? I don't think it's Garapolo can handle a big city, can handle a big culture. You know I like Garoppolo. And I also think you don't, you give up a second round pick to get Jimmy G. By the way, the longer you wait on Jimmy G, you're not going to bring him in this year.
Starting point is 00:31:40 But Garoppolo now, because that San Francisco team, I think it's going to end up in the NFC championship. Well, I don't know for doing anything on their injuries. Listen, they are as beat up as anybody in the NFC. And winning. And winning. They lost their quarterback who had a pick six. It might be an ACL. Like, they're really hurt.
Starting point is 00:31:56 Tough game in Atlanta this week. Yes, I'm looking at the board after a great. All right. Jay Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lie News. So, you know, when you watch the Cowboys and the Rams, you know, it was a pretty dominating performance.
Starting point is 00:32:12 I mean, the Cowboys pick, you know, pick up a fumble, get a sack early, block punt. Listen, what the Rams did last year, all their chips to the middle, right? They went all in, and they won a Super Bowl. And now they're average. Every fan base in the country would take that. They went for it. Vaughn Miller gave up draft picks. OBJ.
Starting point is 00:32:33 Matt Stafford gave up multiple first-round picks and a third-round pick, and the law. of averages is you leverage the future for now and right now they won last year they take it they're in a very distracted market with the lakers and USC and the dodgers and the clippers and they're like we got to get people to pay attention to us we got a new stadium that was four and a half billion dollars cost overruns we got to put people in that and i totally get what they did but they when you do this when you give up a lot of picks to get a von miller and then you get a matt stafford and you're going to be thin somewhere. And they're thin at wide receiver and there's been injuries and they're thin on the offensive line and there's been a half dozen injuries. And right now they can't move
Starting point is 00:33:14 the football. The good news is for the Rams. Their coaches in A, their quarterback's in A. They've got multiple defensive stars. They have a very supportive owner. They have an outstanding culture. And let's be honest. There are three losses with all these injuries on offense because they're almost all on offense have been to Buffalo, San Francisco, and Dallas. Maybe the third. best defenses in the NFL right now. So they're losing appropriately to dominating front sevens as their offensive line and receiving core is a mess. I think the Rams are going to be fine.
Starting point is 00:33:45 But I mean, I'd much rather be the Rams go all in, sacrifice a little future to win a Super Bowl than be the Mets who went all in financially and can't win a wild card. You know, the Mets can't hit. So my takeaway is I never have a problem with people going all in if you can win. And the Rams won. But there is a price to pay, and it's going to be harder to rebuild. They don't have a first round pick. They have a second and a third.
Starting point is 00:34:12 They don't have many picks left next year. So they're going to have to go get another receiver. You know, their offensive line and their receiving core. Alan Robb, the only thing I'd be concerned about, Alan Robinson appears to not be able to get open. And when you watch the Rams play, McVeigh and Stafford are not even building packages for Alan Robinson. They're not even building packages for him. It's not like they're trying to get them the ball. almost like they've waved the white flag in this thing like, it doesn't work. He can't get open.
Starting point is 00:34:39 So that may just be a bad free agent acquisition and Les Sneed got a lot right over the last three years. But they got to go get another receiver. They got to get healthier. They will. Their center's coming back. A receiver's coming back. I think they'll be okay and vie for a playoff. I mean, they've played the Niners defense, the Buffalo defense, the Cowboys defense. When your offensive line's all banged up, those are the three defenses you'd be like, can we not play them? So some of this is explainable, but they did. They pushed everything to the middle of the table.
Starting point is 00:35:09 They won a Super Bowl. But this was, I'm not sure if it's inevitable. You have a few injuries. Nobody plays in the preseason. Soft tissue injuries everywhere. And they're all beat up in the O line. And they can't move the sticks against any good front seven. Remember the Toronto Raptors went all in for Kauai Leonard, won the championship.
Starting point is 00:35:29 That's right. Kauai bolts. And they're kind of left holding the bag. Like, hey, listen, we had a. great title. It was fun for a great role. By the way, they would do it again. Of course they would, yeah. If I was the Rams, I would absolutely do it again. Here's Sean McVeigh after the loss. This is some adversity that we're facing right now as a football team.
Starting point is 00:35:45 You find out a lot about people when you do go through that. I'm going to continue to stand up here and do the best I can for this team. It's not good enough right now. This is a challenging time right now, but I can assure you one thing. We're going to keep swinging. We're going to keep fighting. And this is when you learn about people. I think they're going to be okay. I don't think this year the way it's constructed, it's a championship team. I think it has a chance to be a playoff team.
Starting point is 00:36:09 They got some bad injuries and a bad scheduling break on defenses, and they look incredibly vulnerable when you put them up against the Niners, the Cowboys, or the Buffalo Bills front. Well, they have Carolina this week followed by a buy. So maybe a chance to get healthy, bring back some starters. But then out of the by, San Francisco and Tampa, two more pretty nasty fronts. They need their center back. They're on a third string center.
Starting point is 00:36:31 and it is clearly an issue. You could see Stafford with the happy feet every time he dropped back. Where's Michael Parsons? Panicking. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week,
Starting point is 00:36:43 within the IHeart radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Starting point is 00:37:00 Either way, the podcast's super. Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying.

Starting point is 00:38:22 Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of taun tons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts,
Starting point is 00:38:50 or wherever you get your podcasts. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English.
Starting point is 00:39:09 Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 was big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed. That's correct. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Starting point is 00:39:35 Now you're finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Numbers don't lie in the last decade.
Starting point is 00:39:54 Over 4 million people have chosen Simply Safe Home Security. Check it out 20% off. Simplysafecolon.com. So the Chargers won yesterday, but it was interesting. They led 30, 28. There's a minute left, a fourth and one, a minute 15 or 13 left. They go for it. They fail.
Starting point is 00:40:12 And I did not like it. There's two things you could have done in this situation. Pun it, and then take Jacoby Brissette, an average quarterback with no timeouts, make him go 60 yards. He did not have a completion, not a single completion over 20 yards in the second half. He ain't Mahomes. Alan, Brady.
Starting point is 00:40:29 That's not what he is. He's not bringing you back quickly. He had some nice drives, but he's not the kind of guy that's going to bring it down the field quickly. They don't have that kind of receiving core, and he's not that kind of quarterback. So I'd have punted it deep.
Starting point is 00:40:41 You've got a minute 13, minute 14, no timeouts. You've got to go 60, 65 yards. Instead, when you fail, Cleveland's got to go 10 yards for a potential game winning kick. I think it's a terrible call. But I thought what was really, really interesting is I heard two weeks ago that there are some veteran players.
Starting point is 00:41:01 You know, Staley has very little coaching experience. And if you don't win games like last year, you know, locker rooms get split. I'm not saying that's happening. But Keenan Allen went to a very respected player in that locker room, went to his social media account and said, what are we doing? By the way, he did not delete it. He kept it up. He's got friends, you know, he got players that are aligning with him.
Starting point is 00:41:24 This decision sounds great today because you won. It's the wrong decision. Jacoby Brissette, no timeout, 65 yards. It's not a dynamic receiving core. And he didn't have a completion over 20 yards. Again, I'll go what Trent Dilper said. It feels like there's the cool kids in class have all got the analytics figured out. And it's very different.
Starting point is 00:41:50 In baseball or in basketball or hockey. every individual game doesn't feel as impactful. In the NBA, I've talked to players for years. You experiment or rotations. I mean, the Celtics were a mess until the trading deadline last year and then turned it on and got to the finals. But in the NFL, you have to win Sunday. You can't experiment.
Starting point is 00:42:10 People lose jobs. You have to win games. So I don't care what analytics say. There's no way, absolutely no way, analytics told you that Jacoby Brissette with no timeouts without a completion over 20 yards in the second half, that's the play. You know how fast the clock goes when you don't have any timeouts and you've got to go 60 yards? That clock is even good completions of 15 yards.
Starting point is 00:42:35 You get your wasting 10, 12 seconds to get up to the line. But here's Brandon Staley after. We believe in our process. We believe in our players on both sides. And we were coming out here on the road to win this game, not kick it and then go hope to win. Again, law of averages, it seems to me, when you go into a football game, if you know you're facing Mahomes, Alan, Brady, there's just a handful of quarterbacks. You know going in situationally, it's different than facing Jacoby Brissette, a Baker Mayfield, a backup.
Starting point is 00:43:14 You know that, right? We all know the great ones. You manage risk differently. Remember last year at the end of the year they went for. on like a fourth and six deep in their own territory. My takeaway was, well, the reward for going forward is a single first down. You'd need five more just to kick a field goal. If you fail, which they did, you give it to Derek Carr almost automatic offense.
Starting point is 00:43:38 It made no sense. The whole risk and reward thing, here there is a reward. You get two yards, the game's over. Like, I get that. But in this situation, contextually, backup quarterback, length of the field, no big completions. They had one big completion all day, and that was first, second quarter to a tight end. I just, I think it's a Trent Dill for earlier on this decision.
Starting point is 00:44:04 He didn't like it either. I think what's happened is these guys have kind of started using the analytics as a crush. It's almost like teams are making these decisions because every, now I think it's three straight weeks in a row. We've seen some crazy ones that are hidden under the analytics umbrella. I think it's become more about winning the post-game press conference than it is about winning the game. I mean, there's no logic to say go for it there. A lot of these guys, this new generation of head coach that are so locked into analytics.
Starting point is 00:44:34 But when you have a 42 football year life like myself or some of the other gray hairs out there that have been around this game forever that have seen in-game situations where the gut is way better than the piece of paper telling you what to do, you just know that that's not your best chance of. winning. Last year when they had this go-for-it moment, remember that against the Raiders, I talked to two Hall of Fame-level coaches. I literally reached out and said, explain this to me, and both said, it's a terrible call. You do risk in this league when there's a big reward. Like yesterday, there's an argument that you get the first down the game's over. And if I was facing, let's say I was facing Aaron Rogers and there was a minute 50 left, that makes more sense. Now, again, if I'm facing Brady and Mike Evans and Chris Godwin and there's a minute 50 left, then that makes a little more sense, a little more.
Starting point is 00:45:30 But Jacoby Brissette and that receiving core, that decision doesn't make any sense. I don't want to be the defender of Brandon Staley because I largely agree with you here. Here's the counter. You have a top five quarterback. You need one and a half yards. You've rung up 460 yards on the Browns, 6.7 years. yards per play. Shouldn't you be able to get a yard and a half? Oh, listen. If the Seahawks lived with that, Russell Wilson has two Super Bowls, it always sounds easy to say, shouldn't you be able to get a yard and a half?
Starting point is 00:46:03 You get into these moments late in games, everybody gets a little tight. I mean, I'll give them credit. The play they called, at least they put the ball in Herbert's hands. That part I like. All I'm saying is you have to have context for going for it. If I'm facing a top seven I'm going to make decisions. I can play much more conservatively as a team late in the game if I'm facing Daniel Jones than if I'm facing Patrick Mahomes, right? Like you have to can, it just can't be a, well, the numbers say, where are you on the field? By the way, yesterday in Buffalo was crazy wind.
Starting point is 00:46:40 Is there wind? What are the last four series? Who's the quarterback? Do I have a great offensive line? By the way, their offensive line now is missing a left tackle. Yeah. Pipkins went down yesterday. And by the way, Chargers special teams historically, Colin, has been a house of horrors,
Starting point is 00:46:55 okay? Whether it's blocked, a penalty, something goes wrong, they give up a big return. Like, historically, the Chargers have been burned. But did you notice Harbaugh had a situation last night? Similar. Fourth and one inside the five late in the game, he kicked a fuel goal to go up six. Everybody killed him on the internet. He had Justin Tucker for late in the game to win it.
Starting point is 00:47:15 Even though the Bengals went down and got a touchdown, you felt confident, right? Lamar and Justin Tucker. I like those odds. Sometimes kicking the fuel goal or punting is the right move. Be damn what analytics say, you know? All right. By the way, my staff, unfortunately, is very cynical. There was a report that came out this weekend.
Starting point is 00:47:34 Sources say that Russell Wilson has a partially torn lat and got a shot this weekend and that he's been in pain for multiple weeks. I see this as a guy who played hurt. the staff does not, they think it gets released. Not that it's untrue, it gets released to protect him. All I know, and this is where I'll defend him. If you are very good at something in life, regardless if you're a man, woman watching, and then suddenly overnight, you're terrible at it.
Starting point is 00:48:05 I want an explanation. That doesn't make you're the best salesperson on the force. A year later, she's the worst salesperson. Is she going through turmoil in her life? Did she lose her right-hand assistant? Explain it to me. People don't go from great to bad overnight. There's got to be an explanation.
Starting point is 00:48:23 Russell Wilson was certainly in an argument for the best deep ball thrower in the league. Now he's terrible. And I mean, not accurate. Underthrown, overthrown, not accurate. This appears to be a reasonable explanation. I am being met with cynicism, which I don't appreciate. but I got Russell's back on this. Wait and watch the offense now.
Starting point is 00:48:48 There's a firework show coming up. Can't buy your tickets now. Your popcorn now for that Denver offense. Hour three next.
