This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

How many men carry a suit or armor?
It signals to the world that you're not to be played with.
And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to.

Hour number two here on the herd, it's me, Jason McIntyre.
You know who I am.
I'm Jason McIntyre.
In for Colin Cowherd, he is vacationing somewhere on the globe.
We should play out where in the world is Colin Cowherd game on the show today?
Because we don't know where he is.
He's somewhere.
But we'll chop it up the NFL, little NBA.
If I can crowbar in any other sports.
I did see, by the way, that breakdancing is going to be a new Olympic sport.
I was stunned at that.
I don't think we're going to talk about it here.
College football gambling bets coming up soon, soon-ish, I guess.
I wanted to start the top of the second hour with this.
Jeff Schwartz is coming up, former NFL offensive linemen.
We do a gambling show together at Fox during the season.
He'll come on the show and a little bit.
We'll talk.
His brother recently retired.
He was on the Kansas City Chiefs.
I do want to start this hour by talking about something that happened Friday on the herd.
You guys know I was on the Herd Friday with Cowherd.
And as a Jets fan, ding, second Jets mention of the show so far, Mark Sanchez was a guest.
And as a Jets fan like, you know, 10 years ago, I was riding the Mark Sanchez train.
Like, we went to two straight AFC title games.
It was amazing.
And I had said something on the show Friday that there's the potential for Trey Lance to be RG3.
And I'll break that down in a second as to why.
So Mark Sanchez comes up on the set.
He's like, hey, what's up, J-Mac?
And I was like, okay, never met you in my life, Sanchez, but what up?
And he's like, hey, what's with the Jet stuff?
I didn't know you were a fan.
I was like, yeah, I was born in New York.
He's like, oh, hey, thanks for stealing my Trey Lance RG3.
And I was like, oh, I didn't know you were going there.
And Sanchez was just like totally chill guy, super friendly.
I wanted to talk to him about what the hell happened against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the
AFC title game a decade ago, but it did not come up in topic.
But he was like giving me credit for,
pushing this Trey Lanch RG3 thing. Here's where it comes from. And I will admit, I grew up,
other than I was born in New York, I grew up in Northern Virginia, went to high school there,
went to college in Virginia, a lot of friends in the D.C. area. They are not happy that I'm down
on Carson Wenz. They did love RG3 briefly. That being said, RG3 came into Washington as more of a
finished product than Trey Lance is going into Sanfran. And that's the only hiccup with
where I was going with could trade lands be RG3?
Remember, Washington traded a bunch of picks to get up and draft RG3.
Sanfran traded some picks to get up and get trade lands.
The offensive coordinator in Washington was Kyle Shanahan.
His dad was the head coach.
You guys surely remember RG3 setting the NFL on fire as a rookie.
Monster numbers.
I think the season opener was against the Saints.
He put up Bafo Yards, just off the charts.
He probably won some people fantasy league.
year. He had like a 75-yard touchdown run against the Vikings. I'm pretty sure at the old
stadium or maybe it was FedEx Field. It was like down the sideline and I remember watching
it in my room like, oh my gosh, RG3 is a, he's a freaking receiver. Look at the speed. And like the
stands were shaking. It was incredible. Go look it up on YouTube. RG3 of course got hurt in the
Seattle game. Then he tried to play and he just leg got destroyed. I think Trey Lance can do
that for Kyle Shanahan, B, and
RG3? The problem, of course,
is that RG3
played in 41 games in college.
41. Tray Lance
played in 17.
RG3 had over 800
more pass attempts.
Those are constant reps that
Tray Lance just hasn't had.
Now, the counter is, well, hey, Jay,
RJ3 was throwing a Santana Moss and
Pierre Gosson.
Okay?
Look at who Tray Lance is throwing to.
Debo, Samuel, and George,
Kittle, two of the best at their position.
So you could argue Tray Lance is better set up.
Kyle Shanahan had 10 more years in the league than RG3 was.
I just wonder, there is some offensive line issues in Sanfran.
Remember, Alex McRotired, they lost a guard to the Jets in free agency.
So the middle of their line has some question marks.
But I ultimately think Tray Lance could have potentially,
big year. And folks, that's why his gambling odds for MVP have gone down from 200 to 1 to something
in the neighborhood of 30 to 1. So you miss the boat if you did not bet Trey Lance to win the MVP.
Now, I'm not that bullish on him. I do, however, have some bad news for Rams fans. And I got to
say this quietly because, you know, there's a lot of Rams fans out here. Folks, there's a scenario we'll
talk about later in the show where the Rams missed the playoffs. I don't want to go over
board, but the schedule is brutal.
All right, let's bring in Jeff Schwartz,
former NFL offensive lineman.
He does some gambling stuff with me for Fox Sports.
Jeff Schwartz, how you doing, my man?
I'm good.
How you doing, buddy?
I'm getting psyched for the season.
Hit a couple good bets this weekend,
and I already got my week one college football,
mostly locked in, so I'm excited, man.
Yeah, yeah.
So you were in Vegas this past weekend or two weeks ago?
I was in Vegas shortly this past weekend.
The best part, by the way, was when I was rolling some dice.
and these heavy spenders were putting money on the don't pass line.
And I hit a bunch of sevens, and I hit the point a couple times.
They lost a lot of money.
It made the table very happy.
So it was a good weekend.
Good weekend.
I mean, it was five figures.
They lost on my rolls.
You're betting against me, man.
I'm like, come on.
What are we doing?
Love it.
Let's go with your, tell me one bet you made in Vegas over the weekend on NFL and one on college.
Okay, well, my favorite bet is the raven's one.
the AFC North. Now, when I
originally bet this, it was plus $210,
plus $200, now they're the favorite to the North.
There's a lot of money coming on this. I just,
it never made sense to me why
they were not the favorite. They would aim three last
year with Omar Jackson.
He got hurt, and they struggled.
But he also, he was the only one who got hurt, right?
It was all their running backs, their left tackle,
their two best corners.
You know, Klaas Campbell, like all,
everyone got hurt. Typically, the next year after that,
you're all healthy. It's kind of the way it works.
Bengals have a much tougher schedule this season.
they're due for a little bit of injury progression,
the Steelers, the Browns, like the Ravens to me
are good when they're in the Northern,
you know, for college football for a future bet.
I mean, Utah to the cultural playoff is a good wager, in my opinion.
You look at, here's what, but here's what,
okay, so I liked it to be Florida this weekend.
I already took Utah on the money line to be Florida.
If they beat Florida, you have to find me two losses on their schedule, okay?
So is it at Oregon?
Okay, fair enough.
USC at home?
I mean, if they split those, right?
And when the games are supposed to win,
they're in the playoff.
They're 12 and 1.
They've won the Pac-12.
I would imagine if they could beat Oregon or USC combination of both,
they'll play them again,
quite possibly in the Pacto title game.
Like, to me, they have the schedule to do this.
If you look at the other options,
whether Clemson probably maybe,
you know, if Alabama or Georgia
knock each other out this year,
that opens up one more spot for Utah,
Ohio State, I think probably around the table.
So I think Utah cultural playoff.
I love him this weekend.
Florida is the way to go for me.
Interesting.
We'll come back to the NFL,
but I know you went to Oregon,
obviously played there.
I like Oregon getting 17 and a half this weekend, Jeff.
And I think what should be a great game?
It should be a good game.
I'll be down in Atlanta for that game.
First time I've seen the Ducks in quite a while.
look, it's very simple.
It comes down to Bo Nix, right?
I mean, Bo Nix transferred from Auburn as probably the starting quarterback.
Dan Lennie will announce it, but I imagine he's the guy.
And you just have to hope that he just doesn't make mistakes.
Like, the defense's going to be really good.
It's multiple pros on that team.
They've recruited well.
Offensive line is good, running backs, wide receivers.
It's all good.
I hope they catch Georgia and sort of like a national championship hangover.
They're playing a team from the West Coast.
maybe they don't take Oregon very seriously.
So Stinson Bennett is not that given a quarterback.
I mean, they kind of get by with him.
So, you know, forcing him a couple turnovers.
But look, Georgia has elite players.
I still have a defensive line.
Still a defensive backboard, it's going to need a tough game of Oregon to win.
But I think when we keep it close early on, we have a chance to cover 17.
Yeah, I'm with you on that.
The Georgia defense, I think they lost six or seven starters to the NFL draft.
I mean, it's just going to look nothing like last year, right?
nothing but but they say that the best defensive lineman is still there
and that's jalen carter number 88 and then you have cayley wringo who had the
game of the interception against Alabama like they still have multiple first round
place on that defense yeah they're they're loaded all right let's get back to the NFL
I am curious you're a former offensive lineman I look at these bucks injuries I look at
Tyron Smith going down I look at some questions on the interior for the Niners I don't know
Jeff, it seems like offensive line is shaping up to be an issue around the league potentially.
Am I overestimating what's going on in Tampa or not?
Well, Tampa's a concern just because Tom Brady, you know, over the years,
as he gets older, it just gets tougher, right?
You know, he's not going to move very much going to sit in the pocket.
And he walks with the ball quickly.
And if you're interrupting him at all in that cadence of his by a poor offensive line,
you can really get him.
It seemed like the one way to really get him to slow down.
We've seen it with the Rams last during the playoff game.
We saw it many years in New England.
So that is a heavy concern.
You know, the Cowboys with Toronto Smith.
Like, you just, you don't really have those backups.
Like, you don't have someone who can just come in and be him.
Unfortunately, he's been injured.
They drafted Tyler Smith.
I would keep Tyler Smith at left guard.
He's been well done in the preseason.
Keep him there.
Try find yourself a replacement at left tackle,
whether that's Eric Fisher is a free agent,
whether that's a report trading for Walker Little, possibly.
In Jacksonville, that would be a way to go.
you know, that is very good, because if you look at the record of the Cowboys with and without
Theron Smith, like it's a big difference. They are a much worse team without him, and that's
not acceptable. Like, you, teams lose left tackles, they lose right tackles, and they play
fine. I mean, Eagles lost Jason Peters their Super Bowl season and still managed to block everyone,
right? Like, you can make it work with one guy out, but Cowboys have to find a way to make it
work without their left tackle. The Niners are just, you know, they're a retirement center,
but yeah, it's concerned, especially with Tray Lanceby in there.
Jimmy G real quick.
There is some speculation that the Niners will cut him this week and why would they wait so long?
Well, they didn't want him potentially picking Seattle in the division.
Seattle plays the Niners in week two and going there with like a month to prepare.
And Seattle didn't want to give up anything.
So maybe they land Jimmy G.
And then you got those two receivers.
They look kind of competent on offense in the preseason.
I don't know, Jeff.
Is there a scenario where Jimmy G ends up in Seattle in the division?
vision.
Well, he has to be cut for that to happen.
This is what I've seen in the entire time.
He has to be cut to go somewhere else.
And I don't really see so, you know, the odds on where Jimmy G.
Gove as well, like Seattle, Houston, all the bad teams, right?
And to me, I think his place this season is a backup on a good team.
If you're Seattle, you really, you'd rather stink this year.
Like, there's a lot of quarterbacks in the draft next season.
Like, be bad this year.
You yourself a young quarterback.
Jimmy Gropolo doesn't really win you a Super Bowl.
You may get you to eight wins, but like, do you really want to win eight games,
or would you rather win three games?
We'd have to quarterback next season and kind of start your franchise over again after Russell Wilson.
To me, you'd rather stink.
So to me, you look at the backup situation in Tampa Bay, in Buffalo.
I think Kansas City is pretty set with Chad Henney.
And you find situations for Jimmy Groplo around the NFL where he can be that, you know,
that $10 million of your backup, right?
Just a one-year deal.
if someone gets hurt, you have Jimmy Graspa.
That, to me, feels more of where I think he should be
than going to be the starter on a bad team.
It doesn't really do anything for me.
It doesn't make that team much better,
and it might just hamper them next season
from getting the quarterback in the future.
Well, could Jimmy G. go to Cleveland
get them to say 7 and 4
and then be that bridge to Deshaun Watson,
who gets him to the playoffs?
Because if you look at the schedule,
you know, Brissette could do well early,
but then he's going to get destroyed.
And, you know, they don't,
have a ton of weapons there, though. It's like Amari Cooper and a cloud of dust on the outside.
Yeah, it's certainly possible that they can do that. But what happens if you're 7 and 4?
Do you want to? I mean, I know you paid Deshaun Watson. He's going to play. If you're 7 and 4,
your first in a division, you're really going to feel good about going to a quarterback
who isn't played in a year and a half now? I mean, you have to play to John Walton. I get that.
But a guy that hasn't played a year and a half has a limited practice, not he hasn't, he hasn't,
He didn't practice the training camp two years ago.
He didn't practice a little bit this year,
but obviously just one pre-season game.
Like, if you're seven and four,
if you're aiming three,
if you're playing good football,
it would feel odd to be like,
yeah, we're just going to pull the plug on this season,
hope the Sean Watson plays won't get ready for next year.
Again, I think the Browns
would rather just, I don't know,
be middling with Jacoby Percette
and then have Washington coming and be kind of a savior
than have Jimmy G.
You know, he can play wellness offense.
We saw Baker play wellness offense,
and they win a bunch of games,
and you kind of feel silly going to Jean Watson.
All right, we'll wrap up, Jeff, with the Steelers quarterback battle.
It seems like Geno's a guy in Seattle.
Davis Mills, for better or worse, in Houston.
Justin Fields in Chicago, everything's set except for Pickett Tribusky.
It sounds like Steelers are leaning 70-30 to Trubisky to start week one.
Where are you on that one?
Yeah, I wouldn't surprise me knowing that, you know,
Tomlin is a veteran coach, obviously, with a veteran team.
and I'd imagine that he wants the veteran quarterback early on.
Just, that's the sense I get from Pittsburgh,
even though I think Pickett obviously is the future of what they want to be.
And you can always go to Pickett at some point during the season.
If you start Kenny Pickett, he doesn't play well,
and you bench him for Trubisky, of all people,
that it kind of makes you look dumb.
Like it's like, you know what, like,
this is a, to be a calculation when it comes to a lot of these situations.
That's why Jimmy G.
has to go on San Francisco because you can't have him just sitting there when Traylance plays poorly
that you can't go to it. It cannot be an option of yours because you cannot go to another
quarterback when you play the young kid. And so I think in this situation, you start with the
older player in Trubisky. Maybe he plays terribly for three games, four games, plays average.
You put picking in and then you let him ride the rest of the season. You can't. If you start week
one with them, you have to let him ride all 17 games. This way you can look to me is the way
they're going to play this. Interesting. All right. Jeff.
Schwartz, Fox Sports, NFL analyst, gambling guy, Pac-12 guru. Can I call you a guru?
Dude, I looked at my record, kept track in 19 and 21 because 20 other weird COVID year.
Yeah. Pac-12, 65, and 27. You have to spread for me.
That's decent, man. Well- Yeah, pretty good, yeah.
Utah this week, Daniel State minus 6 hosting Arizona. Those are my two so far.
Interesting. All right, Jeff Schwartz. Enjoy it. I'm sure we'll talk soon, man. Take
you. Take care, bud.
Schwarz loves a PAC 12.
I'm looking at a PAC 12 game this week.
We'll talk about it in a little bit.

Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football,

Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined.
And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.

Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it,
and we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross.
you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth?
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

in for Colin Cowherd.
Thank you for the Snoop Dog there.
Music.
I want to talk about this NFL top 100.
I don't want to call it a list.
It's more nonsense than anything.
Listen, as a guy who built a website
into something and then sold it,
it got written about it in the New York Times.
I'm sorry for the humble brag there.
But I can unequivocally tell you,
lists are click gold mines.
Honestly, I could rank French fries.
Who has the best fries among, you want to go restaurants, we could go fast food,
and it could get 100,000 clicks easily?
By the way, the correct answer is what, music?
Best French fries.
I guess probably the reigning champ would be McDonald's.
Of course, yes.
And the runner-up, and it's close, is Chick-fil-A's waffle fries, assuming waffle fries count.
Yeah, that's fair.
Of course they count.
Okay, just making sure.
And then I could come up with a list of ranking the characters on Friends,
a show which doesn't even hold up great,
but it could get 500,000 clicks.
And by the way, the correct answer on the number one character on Friends music is?
I have no idea.
Did you not watch Friends?
I mean, like, episodes here and there, but I have no idea.
Episodes here and there.
There's like the number one show in America for a decade.
And you watch episodes here and there.
I think the correct answer, Tooie, check me on this.
Rachel?
Okay, thank you.
Jennifer Aniston, obviously.
Jennifer Aniston, come on.
Joey?
Oh, gosh, he was terrible.
I could not deal with that guy.
I can't watch Friends reruns.
That being said, this list of the NFL top 100 players will do a million clicks if you cover the website for NFL, their Instagram, if they do Snapchat, TikTok, Twitter, whatever.
They'll get a million clicks because it's lowest common denominator stuff.
There's really no argument.
Who is the top player in the NFL?
Well, sure as hell is not Tom Brady.
Are you kidding me?
How is Tom Brady a 45-year-old guy?
the best player in the league.
Oh, I'm sorry, top player in the league.
I mean, let's just go here.
Josh Allen, not in the top 10, is comical.
Okay?
And again, I don't know the language I can get into here on the herd.
I don't want to get in trouble.
But Patrick Mahomes 8?
I mean, can I say asinine?
Like, that's ridiculous.
Patrick Mahomes is the eighth best player in the NFL?
That's just pure insanity.
Devante Adams.
And again, Devante Adams is special talent, man.
That guy's good.
The route running.
Impeccable hands.
He was catching passes from one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the sport.
You don't think there's going to be a little drop-off?
Catching from Derek Carr?
Just a little bit?
I mean, think about this.
Patrick Mahomes on the NFL top 100 list is eight.
And again, I don't go to outrage about this.
I know it sound like I'm outraged, but I'm just fired.
I love talking about sports.
Jonathan Taylor, fifth best player in the NFL.
Top five in fantasy, you know it.
Top five in the NFL.
Are you kidding me?
I mean, his greatness is wholly dependent on the offensive line.
By the way, I have fantasy drafts this week.
I've mentioned already.
If Taylor doesn't go one in your drafts, he should go two.
I saw a stat from the football outsiders.
The Colts faced the easiest slate of run defenses in the NFL this year.
There's a shot at 2,000 yards for Jonathan Taylor.
That still doesn't mean he's a top eight player in the league.
Like that is pure insanity.
And again, I talked about Brady at the outset.
I know Tampa fans.
I've seen your, on my Twitter is just a torrent of diarrhea about how bad my Tom Brady take was at the outset.
And I get that.
That's fine.
Whatever.
You guys are going to do that.
Do you.
But offensive line, the continuity is gone.
Oh, by the way.
A.B.
gone.
Gronk, gone.
Godwin gone for at least two games.
Tom Brady ain't the number one player in the NFL guys.
Is he the best quarterback in NFL history?
His career has been certainly, undeniably so.
But to not have Patrick Mahomes won, to me, is just crazy.
I mean, Josh Allen, who I didn't even love coming out of Wyoming,
who I didn't love the first two years of his career,
with Brian Daibold turned into a juggernaut.
They didn't run Josh Allen the first half of last.
season because they wanted to save him for the second half.
And look at his numbers. There's a reason
he's the MVP favorite.
I was stunned
at this. I should
just rattle. Do you have the top ten?
Or two-e-cuhy-cuhy. I should have
written it down. I just wrote down the ones I was upset
with. I definitely have the
top five here. The top five was
Brady, number two, Aaron Donald,
number three, Aaron Rogers,
number four, Cooper Cup, number five,
Jonathan Taylor.
Yeah, I like Cooper Cup a lot.
Is he the number one receiver?
Yeah, probably.
But is he better than Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen?
Of course not.
Come on.
Six, T.J. Watt, seven, Devante, like you said, Mahomes, eight, yeah.
Jaila Ramsey 9 and Travis Kelsey 10.
I don't get the Mahomes thing either.
Like, Super Bowl MVP, Super Bowl win, Super Bowl MVP.
Like, what do players have against him?
Yeah.
You know, there's almost-
He's likable?
Yeah.
Tui, does it?
feel a little bit like the
Steph Curry hate. He's like,
oh, and I shouldn't bring this up. He's a light skin
guy. He's got a family. He's
wholesome. I just think he's too good.
What do you mean? Too good of a player?
Yeah. I think people are just, they're just so like,
oh, Mahomes, he's just too good. Like, we can't put
him, you know. Brady's like the king, right? We're all
watching House of the Dragon, right?
It feels like Brady's the king and until he gets unseated, he's going to be
number one. Should I be watching House of the Dragon?
You should be. The first two episodes were amazing.
So if you haven't seen.
Game of Thrones, which I'm sorry,
have not.
Can you watch this show?
You can.
Okay.
You can.
I mean, it is good to know some of the,
I mean, this is set like 200 years in the past,
so it's good to know a little bit what happened,
but you, not necessarily.
My line used to be, I draw the line at dragons,
and I just don't deal with them and talk about them and watch shows involving them.
But enough smart people that I like and respect have said Game of Thrones is incredible.
You and Colin are in the same boat.
Music, do you do dragons or no?
Yeah, I mean, I haven't.
started this series yet, but yeah, it doesn't bother me.
I mean, the other thing to remember about maybe this series is different based off of
the actual content and the years that they're covering.
But, like, Game of Thrones is so much less about actual dragons and so much more about
power plays, yeah.
That's what I've heard.
The only streaming thing I can mention here, and I'm still a cable box guy, I got three
cable boxes at home.
You know, I've got the DVR and all of them.
So you're the one keeping them in business.
Basically, I have.
I have the DVR box.
I've got like the all movie channel package because when I'm at home during the day doing work,
I always want to just flip around.
Yesterday school ties was on.
Have you seen school ties?
No.
Oh my gosh.
Music.
No friends.
No school ties had Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Brendan Frazier.
That movie's incredible.
It's about football and prep school stuff.
I've seen it 30 times.
But all right, let's get to heard line news.
I've prattled on long enough music.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
It's all right, Jason.
You're filling in for Colin today.
I think prattling on is what we're expecting from you today.
So don't feel too bad about it.
But let's keep it with the NFL.
One of the teams that made huge waves this offseason
was the Chargers making major changes to their defense.
Now a major reason why they missed the playoffs
was because of their leaky defense,
but also to the aggressive nature of their young head coach,
Brandon Staley.
who famously or infamously led the league in fourth-down conversions last year.
Of course, in their winner-go-home game against the Raiders to make it into the playoffs,
they failed on a crucial fourth-down conversion,
as well as other instances earlier in the season against other teams,
which he received loads of criticism for.
So when he was asked about his approach heading into year two as a head coach
in that aggressive approach, he told Peter King, quote,
I think as a coach, anytime something doesn't go down,
you're going to challenge yourself and say, was that the best thing?
Did I give myself our team the best chance to win?
But the mindset, I don't regret.
The mindset of why we did it, I think in games like that, you have to go meet moments like that head on.
Brandon Staley doubling down on his go forward on fourth down.
Let's put the ball in Justin Herbert's hands and we can expect to see it yet again in year two.
How much does the narrative change if the Raiders and Chargers tie in the final game?
and the Chargers make the playoffs.
Sure.
The narrative about him changes totally because they missed.
And I still, didn't he call a timeout and give the Raiders a chance to think about it?
Is that what happened?
He did.
His explanation was more so that he didn't call a timeout to allow them to do anything.
He called the time out because they thought that they were not in a good defense alignment
based off of what they saw from the Raiders.
I still remember that.
That game was amazing.
That game was out of control.
Yeah, yeah.
So I'm team Chargers.
I'm Team Staley.
I bought a Chargers t-shirt this week.
If any of my buddies listening want to...
I know a couple guys with season tickets to the Chargers.
If you want to bring me to a game, I've got the Chargers T-shirt ready to go.
Oh, look at you.
I'm a Jets fan talking about the T-Rexir.
I'm literally wearing a Jets.
As I'm looking at you, wearing a Jets T-shirt.
I like sports.
They are fun.
That's fair.
That's fair.
But do you like, for the most part, do you like Staley in that approach?
Or are you expecting to see a little bit more of a pivot towards adjusting?
I forget who coined it.
But I think the saying,
is punt to lose and staley just does not he is aggressive as hell i love it that's how i operate in
life uh if i was not aggressive i probably would not have met my wife i just rolled right up to her at a
bar and i was like yo what's up yo what's up not not that the line is that how that not that's cheesy
but even worse than that she'll tell you the better story but it worked you know i got a number
yo what's up hey that's being aggressive j mac that's impressive stuff right there all right
Let's move it along here.
It's been a process, if you will, for Bill Belichick and the Patriots since the departure of the great Tom Brady that you were besmirching not too long ago for being considered the best player in the league.
But the Cam Newton experience did not work.
Last season with Mack Jones in his rookie year was mostly a success, making the playoffs.
But they were then somewhat embarrassed by the bills in the first round.
Now everything you're hearing out of training camp has been bad, and I mean bad.
They lost their veteran offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels,
and they've tried replacing him with failed former head coaches
and Matt Patricia, Joe Judge, also former Patriots coordinators.
Matt Patricia, a defensive coordinator, Joe Judge, a special teams coordinator.
Now, when being asked about all of these struggles in training camp,
here's Bill Belichick on WEEI addressing those questions.
Where is Mack now and how concerned are you that these struggles may impact his growth
as he enters his second year?
Yeah, Max had a great attitude every day. He comes in early. He's ready to work. We go to work. The end of day, we talk about what happened, make corrections, make adjustments, come in and do it the next day. So he's one of our most consistent workers and prepares very well. So I've seen anything other than that.
It's all good in Patriotland, according to Mr. Belichick, Jason. I love it. I'm going to reference pop culture here for the answer. Have you seen the movie Departed, obviously?
No, no, I'm kidding.
Yes.
I was trying to.
Mark Wahlberg is a great actor, and he's amazing in that movie.
And he said at one point he wants to treat the local cops like mushrooms.
Feed them poop and keep them in the dark.
With the Boston accent, it sounds way better.
Trust me.
I think you nailed it.
I feel like that's what Belichick is doing with the media right now.
He's giving nothing on the offense and the coaching and showing absolutely nothing.
They're getting killed.
they look terrible in practices, keeping the media in the dark.
That being said, music, I'd see bad things in the future for the Patriots.
Like six or seven wins.
Oh, wow.
And as a Jets fan, I will be greatly enjoying the demise of the dynasty.
Are you, is it confirmation bias?
Are you seeing what you want to see there, Jason?
No, I mean, I read a piece.
I think it was by Warren Sharp about how the Patriots spent like drunken sailors last.
year. So they're out of money this year to make any changes and they need to make some changes.
They lost an offensive lineman. The receivers are eh. I don't know about the defense. I just feel
like the schedule is not favorable. A lot will happen that Miami game early. If they lose that
one, I think it will spiral. Wow. So you're already, you have no faith in Mack Jones
improving in year two. You're seeing more regression in year two. Yeah. I mean, no Josh McDaniels.
Josh McDaniel is a great offensive coordinator.
I don't know how it will be as a head coach.
It hasn't gone well from the past in Denver.
But yeah, I think Mack Jones came in a veteran,
a lot of college snaps, a lot of experience played well.
You're not faithful in the Devonte Parker edition.
I said on the herd last week,
the Jets have better receivers than the Patriots.
Patriots have the worst receivers in that division.
Dolphins have Tyreek.
Bill's, Stefan Diggs and Company.
Gabriel Davis, by the way, is awesome.
Yeah, Patriots, I'm not feeling it.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Herd Lye News.
All right, good stuff.
Music coming up next.
We will talk to a college football analyst.
Oh, boy, can't wait.
He's got a new book out.
Is Utah going to the playoff?
USC and Lincoln Riley?
I think because I'm filling in for Cowherd,
I'm contractually obligated to talk about USC.
All that's next.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that
George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George
Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jay.
And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here.
unpack what went down and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 was big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack,
so I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now, so.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

and we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
because you find it important to be a good person
while you hear on earth,
or are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

Back here on the herd, Jason McIntyre in for Colin Cowherd.
You guys know he's a huge college football guy.
I will be going to Vegas this week, laid some lumber on some college football bets.
And to get me all excited, we're going to bring in Yogi Roth Pack 12 network analyst.
a new book out, five-star quarterback.
It's not about the stars.
It's about the journey.
Yogi, how you doing, man?
I'm doing well, man.
How are you doing?
I'm excellent.
I'm very excited for college football to get started this weekend.
We had a guest on earlier where I was trying to sell Oregon getting 17 and a half this weekend.
Tell me a team in the Pac-12 you're excited about this season.
I mean, you know, me, probably like you.
I can't wait to see anybody.
Even over the weekend, I was watching every game.
name that was on in week zero.
It didn't matter if it was Charlotte or whomever was playing.
But I think I'm really anticipating SC.
I'm calling the opener there on Saturday with Ted Robinson on the Pactole networks.
And I don't recall a time like this where I've anticipated a team so much in my career
broadcasting now almost 20 years just because of what they've done, what Lincoln has done.
I think I added my experience there when I was on the staff at SC under Pete Carroll.
and we had it going from his opening press conference where he said he wanted the Coliseum to be the Mecca college football.
This is step one in that journey, and the roster is awesome.
It's reshaped in a way that it's never happened before in the history of the game.
And it's just going to be intriguing.
So I think for them, also, of course, Dan Lannning is an opener.
It's so unique in playing its former team after they won a national championship in a road game.
I know it's a neutral site game, but it's a 100% road game in my eyes.
And then the Bruins, the UCLA, I think they're really underval.
you. I could see them going to the Pactville
championship game to play Utah.
I love what they're about. And I think
Utah is the class of this league right now
of the way they've done it. I think this is
the next natural step for them to be truly
considered to be a giant in college football.
And they've got a giant opportunity
on the road at 7 p.m. Eastern
when they go to Florida.
Yeah, that USC game's interesting because the week after
they have Stanford.
And I kind of had circled that one.
Stanford's going to, they got a good quarterback.
they got a good offensive line.
Listen, I know Stanford's not going to be great,
but I have a feeling they're going to be better than the experts think.
Anything on Stanford, Yogi.
I was in time with Tanner McKee doing a feature on him.
He was in the book.
David Shaw was in the book, five-star QB, a lot of Stanford guys.
And what you learn is that the ethos there are so strong that they're not a three- or four-win team.
I just don't believe.
And then I went to Washington practice, and you watch guys like Michael Wilson,
finally healthy.
and Tremaine finally back and healthy after that injury last year against Oregon when they beat the ducks
in that crazy wild finish that they had up there on the farm.
You add in Elijah Higgins, all of 6-3-235.
You add in the tight end room, Ben Urosick, Sam Rausch, and this offensive line.
And people never give their own line two years.
This offensive line has had a full line so much.
So year one, year two on campus, those guys weren't training together.
They didn't get a full-in-all.
I was calling their games, and they were still meeting on Zoom last year.
There aren't many teams, definitely in the southern part of the country that we're meeting on Zoom last year, let alone in 2020 all the time.
So I just think that it's not given a lot of consideration around what pandemic up there.
So I think they're going to take a step.
And I think Tanner McKee, other than TJ Stratt, I think he's in that next dialogue of the quarterback for next year's draft.
I think he's a stud.
And the defense changes schemes.
They have some talented players.
And they're healthy now coming out of camp.
And I think that's always been the biggest thing with them.
So we'll see.
But I'm with you.
I'm excited on Stanford and at home with Jake Hainer.
First round pick, but they don't have any misses.
Like, I just went to watch some practice last week.
They're a talented team, man, and they're going to make it hard on FC on the road.
So not a lot of gimmies for the Trojans, but, man, as you reference, a ton of anticipation and excitement.
To go back quickly to UCLA, Chip Kelly lives like two streets away from me, maybe a three-wood away.
And he's the quietest guy you rarely ever see him, but I saw him walk in my dog once.
I'm not willing to go up to him and talk to him.
Chip Kelly's kind of intimidating to me, but I got to ask, Yogi, you know, 18 and 25 after four years.
I know last year they did well and COVID kind of wrecked them in 2020, but I feel like there
are a team not getting talked about much in the Pac-12 because USC garnered taking up so much of the oxygen
and everybody loves Utah opening his top 10.
Is UCLA, you mentioned they're kind of a sleeper for you.
What is it about this team this year?
Well, I think I was the only guy in the media last year to pick them and win the South.
clearly didn't do it, but they had a solid year.
And then this year, I put him second heading into the season.
And I say that because of a few things.
One is Chip Kelly, he really revamped this entire organization, right?
Every coach says that, but I've been on the inside and watching it, calling a bunch of their games or the last few seasons.
And you look at this team now, number one, it's his most talented team.
Number two, it's his tightest team.
And number three, Chip Kelly, it's the longest tenure he's ever been a head coach at,
heading into year five, as you referenced.
And he got a quarterback in year five in his system.
He's never had a quarterback with more than three years in his system.
So I'm just excited about that.
And then as we talk often about, you know, USC in the portal and they thrive and crush it.
UCLA has as well.
And they don't get a ton of play in that regard.
But you look at Jake Bobo, a wide receiver.
I think he's an all-conference wide receiver transfer from Duke.
Jack Sharboning, I think he's a legit Heisman candidate,
especially if they get going and create some momentum.
them and maybe they'll be undefeated when Utah comes to town, possibly two undefeated top
15 teams, right?
Utah would be top five probably by then.
A huge stage for them.
I love them on the defensive side in terms of the changes they made on the staff.
And then they bring in a guy like Darius Muisat who was All Mountain West at linebacker.
They bring in two twins from North Texas to play the edge.
They bring to me a game record in Leotu Latu.
He's a 6-5-265 rugby player who transferred from Washington as he had to medically retire.
nobody's referencing his name
and to me he's got a chance to be an absolute
record on that defensive edge for them
so I like them and I like how their schedule
sets up to be blunt like they look at their first
three games because of Michigan
bailing on the game and they're supposed to play them
they've got to start the way that they're starting
so the schedule sets up beautifully
for them to take a real run this year
Dorian I had a chance to talk to him
earlier this week on my podcast
and man he's just
he's so connected as a leader
this is a guy who had 304 pass a
in high school. Most high school
quarterback coming to college of over a thousand.
He had to learn on the fly
on a big stage with a bright spotlight
and he's really developed
into that type of leader and learned from
Chip on really how to do that.
So, yeah, man, I'm excited about them.
I'm grounded in my evaluation
on them. There's not a lot of hype that you need
to lean into. I think we just look at the facts.
You're like, okay, they're going to play good football.
They'll be better on defense. And you look
how the schedule lays out who they have at home,
when they're biweek lands.
UCLA to me as somebody I'd pay attention to.
All right, Yogi, we'll wrap up talking about your book on the five-star quarterback.
You know, I saw something that Arch Manning plays weak competition.
It reminded me of Zion Williamson and South Carolina.
He was beating up a bunch of like six-foot-tall-white kids and just dunking all over everybody.
And they were like, oh, I don't know.
Zion crushed it at Duke.
Arch Manning, anything similar there when he makes his move to Texas next year?
No, I think overall, like, number one, I think recruit had the title of five weeks.
journey.
If you think about that, only one has ever won a Super Bowl as a starting quarterback,
and it was Matthew Stafford in Year 13 Team 2.
It was last year.
So most guys don't live up to the projected height that gets thrust upon them.
So let's just start with reality there.
Number two, every league in high school football around the country is not the Trinity
League here in Southern California, right?
Like you're not having five or more D1 guys on every high school team.
So at the end of the day, if you love the craft, are you a seeker around the craft?
and are you enjoying the craft?
And I think now those three things are really critical for recruits
because it's easy to not enjoy it, enjoy it,
because it's NIL, it's a business,
it's how much money are you making?
You know, there's so much things around it.
I think falling in love with the craft can also get altered.
I see that a lot.
In the book, we wrote a whole chapter around the wonderment of the position
and how most guys I talk to with the elite 11,
even the counselors, when they come by,
they're like, yeah, man, it's not that much fun anymore,
it's become a job.
So you have to have the people around you to,
He didn't make it a joy for you.
Then you've got to want to continue to learn.
And everything I've learned about Arch, I've never met him,
is that he's truly that seeker.
And he's going to a place in Steve Sarkesian.
I was on his staff for a few years at FC.
He's as good as you're going to find at developing and mentoring that position.
So I expect him to thrive.
And I don't know if I expect him to play day one.
I think there's so much hype on that.
Most guys don't thrive day one.
I'm a huge fan, a quarterback sitting, learning.
And when they play, letting it rip versus learning on the fly.
Yeah, love it.
Yogi Roth, the book is called Five Star Quarterback.
It's not about the stars.
It's about the journey.
Great stuff, man.
Continued success, Yogi.
Anytime, brother.
Congratulations on everything for you.
All right, thank you.
Yogi Roth, really good stuff.
I like that.
It's about the journey.
That's the whole journey versus destination topic.
You guys know this.
I hate to get philosophical at the end of hour number two,
but hour number three is going to be off the hook.
Are the Rams?
The defending Super Bowl champs.
Are they missing the playoffs?
