Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule. of two. Listen to Stuff to Bole Your Mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th.
Starting point is 00:01:42 You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Cliver Show. This is a place for raw, unfills of conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Starting point is 00:02:26 Now let's get this party. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. What up? Welcome in. This is The Herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be missing to the show. I'm Doug Gautly. I'm Doug Gautly. I'm going to call on Calhurt.
Starting point is 00:02:45 A day after the U.S. advances to the round of 16 out of the group. After our own. It's like a little soccer upcoming. Damon Jeremiah is going to join us. Plus, there's this, remember Deshawn Kaiser, Notre Dame quarterback Once upon a time he was Aaron Rogers backup and his teammate. He shared a
Starting point is 00:03:11 interesting story about Arod and I my takeaway might be different than yours but I'm intrigued. That's upcoming this hour. Michael Lombardi next hour so many things to get to that I feel are interesting
Starting point is 00:03:28 in the world of sports. By the way, You know, like, look, social media has its downsides and it's plus sides. Kyle Pitts, did you guys follow him on social media? He put a photo out post-surgery, the MCL on his right knee, right? As a guy who had knee surgery a little over a year ago, like not PCL is ACL for me, but like, I love that. I love that. All right, this is actually where I am, what I'm doing.
Starting point is 00:03:58 There's this report that a Saudi team has offered Rinaldo three. $360 million. $360 million. $360 million. Various reports. Once as Al Nassar is willing to offer him a contract, three and a half year contract, worth $119 million a year.
Starting point is 00:04:25 $119 million a year. What would that even be like? That's nuts. But obviously, the idea of playing in what's seen as an inferior league and playing for the Saudis, seen as blood money. And as much as all of us could sit here and go, hey, look, everybody has a dollar figure,
Starting point is 00:04:45 $119 million per year for three and a half year. That's above my number, right? Like, I would have gone for a 50. The difference is, Cristiano Ronaldo at 37 years old, he's got to have half a billion in the bank, right? And he has the ability, if he comes stateside to he ain't going to make a hundred million here but plenty of money and he
Starting point is 00:05:06 doesn't have to sell his soul I guess right but what is that what is that number by the way right now the last six he's been uh his his contract with man united is 19 million a year so to go to 19 I don't know how much bigger house you can buy or how many more houses you can buy but that's a lot of cash. Speaking of soccer, so look, soccer guy may get offended and that's okay.
Starting point is 00:05:43 Like we operate in a world now where no one's supposed to be offended like, you know, I'm not offending your human rights, your civil rights or whatever. If this offends you, this is more a you problem. You're going to have to learn to deal with the world. Here's the thing. I'm told our junior and development programs are better.
Starting point is 00:06:03 They're still not what they are overseas. I'm told this is a young team and the best is still yet to come. And I want to believe it. And after listening to Eric Winald to talk, I think, we can get out of this round and avoid an Argentina like next round might not be that hard either. Like we might be able to go on a run here. A lot like the NCAA tournament, right? when you get out of the first weekend.
Starting point is 00:06:28 I remember, you know, my first year doing NCAA tournament games back when I worked for CBS, Wichita State was like an eight or a nine seed, but they hadn't been healthy all year. Right. So they play Pitt, Stephen Adams only year at Pitt, and they beat Pitt, they smoked pit. And then they play Gonzaga, who's the one seed. Gonzaga's starting two guard gets hurt. and Wichita State plays out of their minds, plus they're really, really good, right?
Starting point is 00:06:59 In hindsight, Fred Van Vleet was a freshman, I think it was a backup point guard, right? And they had, then Ron Baker was a redshirt freshman, and they end up winning. And then Sweet 16, Elite 8, they played like LaSalle and maybe Ohio State. It wasn't like Kentucky and Kansas were waiting for them. That's kind of what it feels like for the U.S. men's national team.
Starting point is 00:07:21 Like, it ain't like Germany or Spain or, you know, Argentina is waiting for us. Like, check please. We get, we, we're not, we're not Brazil. We're not ready for Brazil. We're ready for that. But here's the easiest way to say like, look, we're just not there and still kind of not close to being there. Jay Stu, you went to Brea O'Linda High School, correct?
Starting point is 00:07:51 That is right. Pride of Orange County. Pride of Orange County. I know the most, I know the most decorated alum. I can, the two alums. I can think of it, Bray O'Linda. Maybe, actually, you know, three of them, they all played college basketball. What about you?
Starting point is 00:08:06 Ryan Music, you went to school in the valley, right? No, I went to in the South Bay. That's right. The great South Torrance High School. Oh, South Torrance High School. Yes, sir. They had a point guard, Jimmy Williamson, a couple years before me, he played at LMU, good, good player.
Starting point is 00:08:22 It's a rough side of Torrance, right? Southside, Southside, south side of anything is really a tougher side of the tracks, right? usually is. Okay, so here's what I want you guys to do. Think back. Who's the best athlete in your high school? Now I think back. Does anybody have the best athlete in their high school played soccer? Now, I understand that high school soccer, like these guys aren't being drawn from high school soccer, right? They're they're prodigies, they're bubble boys. And we do it in basketball now to match soccer as well, where a guy is kind of hand-selected. But it's still the same idea.
Starting point is 00:08:59 The best athlete you can think of growing up, the best athlete in your hood, did they play soccer? Once you get to that place, then we got to, then we have a legit chance to be a world power. That's really kind of, it's a very, very basic, very, very basic idea,
Starting point is 00:09:19 which is, let's not overthink things. When we get to the point to where the best kid, best athlete in your junior high school, elementary school, even high school, and they're playing soccer. Once we get to that, then we got a chance to dominate. Otherwise, and I understand that soccer is a game of immense skill.
Starting point is 00:09:39 Like, you got to watch these guys pass. Their ability to handle a soccer ball with their feet is like, you know, most of us who play baseball, like they catch a soccer ball with their feet the way we catch a baseball with a glove. Like, that's how good they are. I understand that there's training and development and all those, but on the most basic granular level,
Starting point is 00:10:00 once you get to the place to where the best athletes want to play soccer and want to give up the other sports, then you get yourself a chance. What do you think, music? Is that a fair way of looking at? Oh, absolutely. I mean, I just think of it in this perspective off the top of my head. If Josh Allen and Tyreek Hill wanted to play soccer, how much of a different level would the athleticism of our overall national team be at? Incredible. I mean, you pick out any defensive back in the national football league.
Starting point is 00:10:38 Right. Pick out any defensive back in the national football league. And I understand that there's a size element. And I'm not sitting here. Look, the flopping ends up, I think, costing them not just some fans, but also some young kids. Because it's just, you're just sitting there, you're watching like, dude, get up. And everyone else isn't the only one who does it. We do it as well.
Starting point is 00:11:01 Like, you got stepped on. There was a guy from Iran yesterday. I think he was their captain. He got stepped on a little bit. And he, I mean, just flopping like a fish you just took out of the sea. Like, dude, get up. But the game is really physical. Size is important, especially, you know, on set pieces for headers.
Starting point is 00:11:21 But on the most basic level, again, like if you took all of, of our defensive backs in the National Football League and you got 10 of them to volunteer at a young age, you get those, that level of athlete and you put them on a soccer pitch, we're good. We're literally anything else we have
Starting point is 00:11:44 any sort of focus and concentration on we're pretty damn competitive at, if not good at because we have an incredible amount, not just a diversity, but we have a passion for sports. And I thought Winolda had a great, that's that great line, right? Soccer is the sport of the future. And it's always going to be the sport of the future.
Starting point is 00:12:07 I may not look. Do I hope? Yeah. I mean, it would be really cool to say, hey, we, we decide, once upon a time, we decided to be good at soccer and we're good at soccer. But it's just hard because, you know, kids start playing soccer. And then, you know, we use the term burnout. But I just think they lack that interest.
Starting point is 00:12:28 It doesn't have the highlights, the collisions. I think there's some other kind of granular things missing. But whatever it is, it's just never been able to, just the most basic statement, get the best kids at each high school or each middle school or each elementary school. All right, coming up next, what can the Broncos do with the Russell Wilson-Albatross contract? What are the Cardinals going to do?
Starting point is 00:12:57 Why is LeVar so sensitive? and is Tua's success sustainable? Daniel Jeremiah joins us to answer those questions. Want more herd? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:15:03 I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:15:28 We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:16:14 And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person?
Starting point is 00:16:28 because you're afraid. Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose

Fox Portray of the IHeart Radio app wherever you're listening. Thanks so much for making it as part of your day. calling back tomorrow, I believe.
Starting point is 00:17:00 I think Colin is back tomorrow. Got some really interesting stuff and headline news upcoming. And then there's a... Aaron Rogers has entered the Spurrier zone. What does that mean? Or maybe the Tyson zone. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:17:14 We'll get to that upcoming. But let's start with Daniel Jeremiah. Of course, NFL analyst. He's host of Move the Sticks podcast. He and Bucky Brooks. That's a great show. You can download or he can see it on the NFL network. And he also calls the Chargers game.
Starting point is 00:17:28 for our affiliate here in Los Angeles. DJ, let's start with Jeff Saturday and the Colts, right? They're one and two. And like this isn't horseshoes or hand grenades. You don't get credit for coming close. But as somebody who's a neutral observer, how well coached do you believe they are since they made the coaching change? well i mean i i honestly i think the same issues they had previously still exist um you know i
Starting point is 00:18:03 think it does point a little bit to the fact of you know the majority of the coaching is taking place with the assistants and then the head coaches are you know mostly responsible for end-game decisions unless you're a play caller so jeff with the role he's doing i think you know being able to be to be organized to uh be a all that stuff he's needs to, but the end game, you know, management was a little bit of an issue in that last ballgame with the clock at the end. So, you know, I think he came out, owned up some of that. But that's something if you haven't coached before, that's a big part of your gig. Well, now he said when he, when he, when he yesterday talked about it, he said, yeah, he would like to call a time out, but he didn't say it was because of time.
Starting point is 00:18:47 He said it because they were a little bit, they're a little bit of a mess, right? It was more about being organized. and his initial answer, what I heard was, hey, they were in tempo, and my guess is, he probably thought, well, Matt Ryan, you know what you're going to see defensively. You can get up and line up. Whereas if you call time out,
Starting point is 00:19:04 now can you get organized, but so can the defense. Is there an argument to be made there? I mean, I don't like it personally because I just think with Matt Ryan and where his arm strength is at this point in time, I'd rather have the time because it's going to take you quite a few plays
Starting point is 00:19:19 to get down the field. So that to me would have been something I would have done differently just to give yourself more plays. So, you know, I can see trying to make that argument, but not with Matt Ryan where his physical skills are right now. I'm going to need as many plays as possible. Do you think they make him the full-time head coach? I don't. You know, I think this is a, you know, this is a good opportunity for him to be able to go back to Ursa with their relationship and say, okay, I've really had an inside look at this thing now.
Starting point is 00:19:54 I can kind of give you some dynamics and some honest information that I wouldn't be able to give you from the outside. I'd be able to share that information from the inside. I think they'll use that to go out and try and find their next coach. They need to find somebody that's going to be able to break in a new quarterback that's going to be able to develop a young quarterback. So I'd be surprised if they didn't go out and try and find an innovative offensive head coach. Yeah, it feels like he's a bit of a consultant there. and now the on-the-job stuff will give them a better sense of, hey, here's what you need to tweak, here's what I would fix,
Starting point is 00:20:26 and here's the way I would do it. It's undercover boss. I don't know if I've ever seen that show. I know the premise of the show, but that's what it sounds like. I agree with you. Why aren't the Ravens better? Well, I think you can look at some key injuries, specifically with Bateman.
Starting point is 00:20:45 I think when Bateman was out there, you can look at the numbers early in the season, and how Lamar was much better. I think they have a very, very average skill position group. So, I mean, I've seen enough of Lamar when he does have, you know, the big time tied in and does have, you know, somebody to throw to on the outside with Bateman that he's played at a better clip. So I think I would probably attribute it to that more than anything else.
Starting point is 00:21:09 He's not playing great. But, man, Doug, you know, you look at the group that he has around him right now and there's not a whole lot that instills confidence in from a passing standpoint. No, it really does not. Obviously, he overreacted to some random on Twitter, but, I mean, massively overreacted. But, okay, like, I mean, all of us have looked at our Twitter feed at some point and wanted to want to just let everybody know that we got this. We got a fastball that we'll use it every once in a while. Right.
Starting point is 00:21:40 I mean, everybody, we all wanted to be like, dude, Lamar, did you need to? That said, a lot of this is the sensitivity over the contract. That's obviously a thing. he clearly wants 250 guaranteed like Deshaun got. You've worked in that organization. How do they handle this? Well, I don't think he's going to get that. You know, I don't think they're going to move off of the number they were comfortable with.
Starting point is 00:22:03 And I think, you know, seeing some of the, you know, the struggles this year, even though I was attributed, as I mentioned, you know, to what's around him, you know, he hasn't played in a clip that would say, okay, we're going to move off of our number and where we are. I just, I don't see them doing that. they've notoriously been a very disciplined and principled organization in terms of the value they placed on players. And, you know, even though it's a high profile player high profile position, I don't really see them nudging off that. I'm intrigued by this discussion. In our lifetime, and you can tell me if I'm wrong, Kaepernick is the only guy to run that sort of system and get to a Super Bowl.
Starting point is 00:22:45 for the most part you get to the playoffs and guys kind of have it figured out right Lamar's got one road playoff win um but now you're you're watching the eagles and it's I mean they do some really interesting stuff in terms of blocking for the quarterback and it's 11-11 football it's that's hard to play 11 11 football is really hard to play especially when you have a quarterback who can throw the ball some and then make you miss some as well but my question is have we reached the point where you can win in the playoffs with that style? Well, I think you're going to have to have all the other pieces in place. And if you think back to that Niners team, I mean, that was Justin Smith and Alton Smith,
Starting point is 00:23:29 one of the most dominant defenses. That was Patrick Willis, Navarro Bowman. That was a loaded defense. That was an offensive line. It was probably the best in the NFL at that point in time. So I think those are the components you have to have. Now, I know the Eagles gave up a bunch of points the other day, but when you look, at the group that they have up front.
Starting point is 00:23:47 They've got real dudes. Javon Hargrave is a big-time, big-time player. Fletcher Cox can still go. They've got waves of defensive line, and they probably have the deepest offensive line in the NFL. So I think that, you know, you can do it, but you've got to have those pieces in place. I think Philadelphia does.
Starting point is 00:24:05 I think it's a watered-down NFC. So I think absolutely they could make a run in the playoffs this year. Yeah, I would also add that they look like they're going to get the buy. and that only helps you in terms of getting rested, but teams don't have extra time to prepare for them. They got to prepare for their first game, and then they got a short read to prepare for the Eagles. So unless it's the Cowboys...
Starting point is 00:24:27 You've got fresh legs, too. Fresh legs, and you don't have time necessarily scheme them up nearly as much. That's going to be interesting to see. Okay, let's get to some of these quarterback with Albatross contracts. Russell Wilson. What do you do if you're Denver? I was just talking with Robert Mays about this yesterday from the athletic. We had a long conversation about it, and there's no easy answer.
Starting point is 00:24:54 Obviously, you can't fire the quarterback, so the two things you can do to try and help the situation, you can go out and try and get a head coach or a coordinator that you think better fits him. That's the first option. The second option is you can look at it and say, okay, we're going to try and bring in a cheap alternative. can compete with him. And then you kind of have to divorce yourself from it, Doug, and say, look, we look at what we're paying the quarterback position, not necessarily we're paying the individual player.
Starting point is 00:25:23 So if you go out and you get, you know, maybe it's a Sam Donald or somebody like that after this year that doesn't cost you much, just to provide some competition. Maybe that pushes Russell. Maybe you get more out of Russell that way. Absolute worst-case scenario, you know, if he's not getting it done, you could play the other player and just look at it as the amount of money you're allocated.
Starting point is 00:25:41 to the position. But man, I can't imagine having him not starting for you after the money that you doled out and what's still to come. It's really kind of a nightmare situation. Yeah, I mean, I think the worst part about it isn't just the eroding skills. It's that, you know, yes, you got, you said hire a coordinator who fits him. I don't think he knows who he is. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:05 That's the problem. He's never, he's never embraced. He's never embraced the style of play that. brought him, you know, to the Super Bowls, you know, he's never, he didn't like that. He wanted to be somebody else. And somebody else that he wants to be doesn't work. So that's, that's where the, uh, that's where the tricky part is. Um, Kyler said, and you were calling the game for the Chargers Radio Network, Dana
Starting point is 00:26:30 Jeremiah is our guest. I'm Doug Gottlieb in for Collins or heard on Foxport Trader, the IHeart Radio app. Kiler said that their, their scheme was, was screwed up. I mean, like, I got a lot of questions. It's fourth and inches. why are they throwing the ball deep, whether it's New Hopkins or not? And why as a quarterback would you ever say that, right? Did this just a, it's all me, my bad, my bad, well, you know, and then first, in terms of scheme,
Starting point is 00:26:56 what did he actually mean? I don't know, man, but there was some major confusion at the end of that game where he's literally standing in the pocket with his left hand outstretched, like kind of like a shrug emoji, like what are we doing? Where is everybody? Clearly not on the same page, from a body language standpoint, I don't know if I've ever seen worse than we saw on that at the end of that ball game. Did you watch the Rams playoff game against the Cardinals last year?
Starting point is 00:27:23 Because that would be a challenge from worse body languages. Yeah, no, it would be on the podium. So, no, yeah, we've seen it, again, to a much lesser degree with what Zach Wilson said. But, like, Doug, it's just, it's so simple. And it's something you could literally, you could write it on your wrist. When it's right, it's we, when it's wrong, it's me. That's like the number one rule of dealing with the media. That's it.
Starting point is 00:27:48 That's all you have to know. I listened to Herbert after that game, right? And Herbert said, man, the defense gave us another shot. The coach, it was a great play. Everybody executed. We caught the, like, there was nothing about him. It was textbook. And it may be boring to people, but you know what it doesn't do?
Starting point is 00:28:07 It's not hard. It's not hard. it's not okay so what's the deal with kailer right like we we see the bad bye language we know that there's all these stories about whether or not he works but now he's got this big contract they again kind of same thing they give him a big contract and cliff who is the guy who was handpicked to coach kiler because of their relationship and knowledge of the system like they're going to fire cliff well i mean yeah that's going to be i i think that's going to be i i think that there's probably a new voice that comes into the mix.
Starting point is 00:28:42 I don't think Cliff will get fired. But, you know, and that's probably a year away from that being the case if it doesn't work out next year. The difference between these two situations, I would say, is that at least Kyler's skills haven't eroded. He's still very talented and can still do some special things. I just don't think they're buying with him right now, you know, with what they're doing. And for whatever reason, he just doesn't seem all that interested.
Starting point is 00:29:09 But the difference in him and Russ is that Russ, like his physical skills, like the taste on the football, his explosiveness, his quickness, that's gone. And that's, to me, a lot more troublesome than Kyle and Murray just being kind of uninvested, I should say, with what they have there. Let me dial back to the Russell Wilson part of it. Did you call any of their games last year? The Seahawks games? They played the Broncos?
Starting point is 00:29:34 I don't believe so. I don't believe so. I mean, did anybody see this? coming? No, I've never seen a quarterback fall off of cliff like this. Not in their early 30s. You just turned 34. I think today's his birthday.
Starting point is 00:29:47 Yesterday was a birthday. Yeah. So the, you know, you see, we always talk about running backs fall off a cliff. You better get rid of a running back a year too earlier than a year too late because one day if they're the next day,
Starting point is 00:29:59 it's gone. Quarterbacks is usually more of kind of going down a hill. And we've seen guys, you know, maybe in their late 30s with Peyton and some of those guys that all of a sudden that was gone. But I can't remember a guy at, know, 33 to 34, you know, I thought he played pretty well, you know, before the hand injury
Starting point is 00:30:15 that he had. And then just, it's like the explosiveness, the twitch is gone. I never seen anything like it. It's crazy. We're going to get, you're going to get a chance to call Tua against Herbert Sunday night, a week from Sunday, right? That was flexed out yesterday. That should be great.
Starting point is 00:30:35 First, let me ask you the manual Acho question. Obviously, the Chargers social media team had a lot of fun with him being called a social media quarterback, right? I know Herbert doesn't have social media, but what he meant was, hey, highlight throws, he's great, but he said, I like, I, Tua's better. You've seen every game, you've called every game that Herbert has played. And a lot of them losses, and I self-admin, I'm a Charger fan, I'm a long-suffering Charger fan. Okay. In your mind, how much of those losses can you pin on them? Doug, I think he has 10 fourth quarter comeback wins in his first three years in the league.
Starting point is 00:31:15 And then when you look at the losses, which there have been numerous, I mean, we can just go, I mean, literally just go to watch the Raider game at the end of the year, you know, fourth and 21, you know, all those fourth down conversions. And then, yeah, your defense, you know, couldn't get off the field. And it's, it's been that way in a whole lot of those games where he's made plays and put them in position Kansas City games over the last three years. there's a bunch of them where he's had what you think could be a game winning touchdown happened again this year with what left Mahomes a buck 45 and the homes goes down and that's that's a wrap but if they could get off the field defensively we wouldn't be having that conversation um okay what about two how sustainable is what he's doing oh i think it's i think with the group that they have i think it's extremely sustainable um
Starting point is 00:32:03 because that's what he is he's the best rPO you know quarterback that I've evaluated coming out of college in terms of quick guys, quick hands, quick decisions. He's accurate. Those things are, you know, are nice traits to have when you have a track team around you. And that's what they've assembled there, very similar what he had at Alabama. So I don't think that you can take Tua and drop him in with any, you know, group of players in any system and he's going to work. I think Herbert could. I think that's the difference between those guys.
Starting point is 00:32:34 Herbert can play kind of any style. and I think he'll be just fine. There's a specific way you need to build and handle to it, and they've done it, you know, textbook-wise there with the Miami Dolphins this year, and that's why you're getting an MVP-level play. If you were the Cowboys who appear to be close, you might have the best player in the sport of Micah Parsons, right?
Starting point is 00:32:55 The running backs look good, right? Both of them look good. Like, Zick looks good right now. James Washington is just back now practicing. Would you add an OBJ? I would. just because I think there's a long history in sports of being rewarded for being bold. I think playing it's safe.
Starting point is 00:33:15 I don't know that that's necessarily the best way to win championships. I think you have to take some risks. And there's a little risk there for sure, but there's a tremendous amount of talent. And maybe I don't, maybe I wouldn't feel comfortable or don't want Odell on my team for the next five years. But I wouldn't mind have them on my team for the second half of this season in a playoff run. Do people in the league think that Tom Brady plays next year? Hmm. I don't know, man.
Starting point is 00:33:43 I don't, I think it feels like to me this will be it, but, you know, I guess we've been wrong on him in the past, but it doesn't look like he's having a whole heck of a lot of fun right now. No, but do you want to end it in that way, right? Or do you want to, does he want to roll the dice and, you know, his play caller was in New England for a long time and now is in Vegas. Okay, maybe the Niners need a guy, although I'm not sure he fits how they play offensively, right? Does he want, I mean, I don't know if that's really why he got a divorce,
Starting point is 00:34:17 but if you get a divorce because of football, are you really going to, and you, you know, are you really going to give a football? Yeah, but my question is, is it, you know, is it going to get better at what, age 46, golly, he's got seven rings. I mean, he's, I don't know. I put myself in his shoes and I'd have been done a long time ago. Sure. You know, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:34:37 I don't know how he's going to proceed, but it just seems like this is a guy who's sure as heck not having a lot of fun. You mentioned there's always a reward in going for it. Rams went for it last year. Now they're paying the price this year. Does this make the league or anybody in the league more hesitant about going for it, seeing as what's happened to the Rams? No, because everybody I know in the league would trade off, you know, some down years for a Super Bowl. you know, however many down years that is. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:35:03 I worked in the NFL for eight years, and I went to the playoffs, I think, five times on the teams I was with, but I didn't win a Super Bowl there. If you told me I could go back and win one Super Bowl and the other seven years would be under 500, I'd make that trade in a heartbeat. Dilford took a head coaching job.
Starting point is 00:35:21 You're going to take one next? You're going to? Heck no, man. Heck no. But I'm excited to see how he does. I'm curious actually to see what happens with the Elite 11 because he's run that thing for so long. So I guess that might be under some new leadership.
Starting point is 00:35:35 It might be. It definitely might be. All right. By the way, your Aztecs survived the anteaters last night. Pretty good ball game down on Manizuma Mesa. Appreciate you join us and look forward to your call of the charges this weekend. Thanks, Doug. Call me after the Padres signed, Trey Turner.
Starting point is 00:35:51 We can chat about it. Okay. As Dana Jeremiah, noted Padres fan still doing his victory lap over a couple wins in the in in the postseason let's get to ride music with the news no no no turn on the news this is the herd line news podre's guy of course come on podre's there's always one right Doug there's always at least listen I'm an angel guy so I got no room to hey no we we my friend we have no we we Jason Stewart's like an orange county guy and he's like I like the Dodgers I go to
Starting point is 00:36:23 Dodgers games all the time come on Jay Stu I mean We've got one thing that we call our own, and you don't want to call our own. I grew up, what, five minutes from Anheim Stadium? Braya is not five minutes. Well, okay. Well, I mean, five minutes without traffic. And I, you know, it's 25 minutes. With no traffic, with no traffic, with a jet tied to your back, you couldn't get to Anaheim Stadium in five minutes.
Starting point is 00:36:46 My point is this. I was given a lot of time growing up to be an Angels fan, and I chose the team that's better with a better history. and frankly, less drama and everything. So thank you guys. Thanks for giving me this platform to tell you why I'm a Dodger fan. Hi, music. What do you got? All right. Well, you were talking about some head coaches that have had their struggles during this NFL season.
Starting point is 00:37:13 Matt Rule, formerly of the Carolina Panthers, was the first head coach fired in the NFL earlier this year. After an 11-27 record with Carolina since his hiring in 2020, He spoke with Peter Schrager on his podcast called The Season on IHeart Radio. And here's what he had to say about what he would maybe do differently during his time in the NFL. I think I probably would just probably take it another job. You know, I mean, I think it's a great place, you know, the wonderful people. But I just don't know if I was a fit there. You know, at the end of the day, we talked about, hey, we're going to have a four-year plan, a five-year plan.
Starting point is 00:37:52 You know, if you tell me, hey, we got a two-year plan, then I'm going to go get signed a bunch of free agents. and do it. So, you know, what was a four-year plan became a two-year and five-game plan real quick. If he was only given time. He was only given time. I mean, like, listen, by the way, you think there's a four-year-five-year plan in Nebraska. Good luck with that one, buddy. Yeah, right. You know, I mean, good, good luck with that one.
Starting point is 00:38:16 Poor Matt Rule is the only guy who seems to think that the number of years on the contract that he signs means that's exactly how much time he'll be given. Look, I'll be fair. If we're being completely fair with him, okay? Like, there's no doubt. They probably, you had a new owner like, look, take your time, build it the right way. Everybody always says that. The problem is that you can't have a new quarterback every year. They're the Colts without, they're a less successful version of the Colts, right?
Starting point is 00:38:44 Teddy Bridgewater, Year 1, Donald Year 2. PJ Walker, Baker Mayfield, Darnold Year 3. But it's Baker Year 3, right? That was the thing. I'm sure that they thought, hey, we're going to get to Sean, we're going to get to Sean. But this is like college recruiting. You can't put all your eggs in one basket if you don't get them, be left with something else. They couldn't figure it out.
Starting point is 00:39:09 They couldn't figure it out at the quarterback position. And that got him fired. Period. Stopping it. Teddy Bridgewater wasn't good enough. Yeah, I think it's that. And look, look, Christian McCaffrey got hurt. Sure, I mean, that played a big role in it.
Starting point is 00:39:24 Christian McCaffrey didn't miss a game his first three years, then he couldn't stay healthy. And I don't know what it would have looked like. Last year they were 3-0, remember? Then he gets hurt. They're not the same. But the bigger point is, like, nobody has patience anymore. And that's why these guys have these ridiculous buyouts in college. You get a ridiculous buyout.
Starting point is 00:39:41 So when you have a year where you're like, hey, look, you've got to have patience. Like Jim Harbaugh. Right? You know, Jim Harbaugh had to give some money back, right? So he went from 9 to $4 million because the life insurance thing. It was kind of a little phony. They kind of dialed him back. But it just, again, it saved him so that he could get to that next cycle to where they've now taken off.
Starting point is 00:40:02 Sure. I think the other point, obviously, the quarterback played a major role in it, but it was there just wasn't any progress with the team. At no point other than in a very brief stint at the beginning of last season, we were like, hey, this scene looks like they're really coming along. And they play three of the worst teams in the NFL to start the year. Exactly right. Exactly right. We'll wrap it up with this, Doug. We'll get a little bit of NBA in here.
Starting point is 00:40:20 How about that? Finishing up in the NBA, last night was a big. night for Luca Donchich. The Mavs getting a win over the Warriors. Luca with another insane triple double, dropping 41, 12, and 12. He had a ridiculous start to the season. His third 40-point triple double of the year,
Starting point is 00:40:39 the rest of the league has zero combined. His head coach Jason Kidd asked about it. He said, it's getting a little boring, obviously joking. Luca currently averaging over 33 points per game, leading the NBA, also fourth and assists per game. I mean, he's amazing. And I think, you know, it's one of those things where he changes how you look at basketball because he's obviously not a blur.
Starting point is 00:41:05 His conditioning's been called into question and obviously playing this summer for Slovenia. I think he maintained better conditioning. And that's why he's had a better start. Also, should be pointed out a lot of the guys who are his contemporaries who should be putting up triple doubles. They're not playing enough minutes right now to even get there. but Luca's the best player in the league. I just,
Starting point is 00:41:26 and, you know, and he's modestly better and more competitive at the other end, but he's the best player in the league so far, and I'm not really sure there's an argument for anybody else. And that's why I'm using with the news. Well, that's the news.
Starting point is 00:41:44 And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lie News. New Aaron Rogers story out, and to be honest, probably the least surprising story that you're going to hear. But it's interesting, and we'll get to it next in The Hurt. Be sure to catch live editions of The HARD weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app.

Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
Starting point is 00:42:55 I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking.
Starting point is 00:44:15 What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know.
Starting point is 00:44:41 I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:57 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. Starting point is 00:45:21 Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses.
Starting point is 00:45:40 Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way.

Starting point is 00:46:23 Do you guys, are you familiar with? I think Bill Simmons came up with the Tyson Zone, didn't he? The idea of the Tyson Zone, a shout out to Bill. Tyson's zone is, there's not a story about Mike Tyson that you wouldn't believe to be true. If I said, I saw Mike Tyson once, his hair was on fire. he had he was riding unicycles with clowns down the street being chased by a bull you would say I believe it I believe it that's the Tyson zone about I'm going to say 15 years ago or so I came up with the Spurrier zone.
Starting point is 00:47:10 Spurrier's Steve Spurrier back when he's head coached at Florida, right? Or actually when he's at South Carolina. He was in the Spurrier zone. He took them to Atlanta to the SEC championship game, which no one ever thought possible. Might not ever happen again. But he was so respected, revered, not just in the SEC, but nationally.
Starting point is 00:47:33 You know, he won the highsmiths as a player, won national championships as a coach, that Spurier could kind of say. say whatever he actually felt. Well, you know, we like to play Georgia first game of season. They always have a couple guys suspended, right? He was right, but nobody would actually ever say that. Rogers is somewhere kind of in the middle, right?
Starting point is 00:47:51 He's at the place where he feels like he can say anything he wants. And there's not really a story about the way he thinks that you wouldn't believe to be possible. Case in point. Deshaun Kaiser, Notre Dame, then former NFL backup quarterback. He said this on a podcast. talking about being Aaron Rogers teammate for the first time in 2018. Shut the door, and the first thing that Aaron Roger, that comes out of Aaron Rogers' mouth was,
Starting point is 00:48:17 you believe in 9-11? What? Do I believe in 9-11? Yeah, I mean, why wouldn't I? He was like, you should read up on that. Okay. Now we start learning about the playbook and stuff. I'm like, wow, like, I don't know where this is going,
Starting point is 00:48:31 but what it ended up being was just like a real thought experiment where you wanted me to go back and look into some of the conspiracies around. and provoked a lot of great conversation and we really bonded over that and we started sharing some books and talking about some other things and got into history and business and finance inner earth moon landing the moon oh he's probably he's probably got some crazy theories on the moon reptile people y'all are laughing go do your research i'm telling you go do your research i think it's funny the idea of a thought experiment and this is uh on an innocent level i think who he is. I actually think
Starting point is 00:49:08 that's what Kyrie originally said and wanted to be with the flat earth, but then they become defiant in, hey, I have the ability to say and do my own research. That's great. The problem with the flat earth is like scientific facts.
Starting point is 00:49:25 And even with 9-11. And I understand like anyone, you hear 9-11 and the idea of it being conspiracy and you're automatically like, what? This is what he thinks? But I don't don't believe that's what he was proposing or even believes. It's more challenging conventional wisdom. And the idea that somebody says, well, this is what we do and what we believe, because
Starting point is 00:49:46 what we always done and what we always believe. I agree with that. There's a point. There's a limit. And it's probably when he's challenged on that point, challenge on that limit, that he gets defensive instead of pointing out, this man, it's kind of a thought experiment here. but I think we can all agree that Aaron Rogers on some level in either the Mike Tyson zone or the Spurier zone or whatever zone Aaron Rogers operates within.
Starting point is 00:50:13 By the way, Aaron Rogers expected to play Sunday at Chicago as a place he said he loves to play and win. It's awesome. I offered up the thought on this show last week. Is it possible or watching the best to ever do it in Mahomes? What if Mahomes and Burrow tied together are a great tandem from the past? We'll discuss next. I'm Doug Gottlieb, this to hurt.
