I don't know if I'm going to have my game for the next couple weeks. I'll talk to you about it, probably. I might need some of those injections. We've got some stuff cooking on the purple.

My injections. I like my injections. I want to need Botox, apparently, if this keeps up. All right. Peter King's going to join us in 15 minutes. He had a wonderful career. Great storyteller and elevated a lot of people. It was very helpful in a lot of young journalist lives,

which you can't say much better about a person in any business. when you're helping others along the way. And he certainly did that, and he's going to join us. So he announced his retirement this morning, and he had a wonderful column. He talked about multiple reasons why. And they all made a lot of sense. And you can see the joy that he created for a lot of people. He had a lot of people on the inner web reaching out and saying really nice things about him.

So Peter King in about 15 minutes. But now it's time we do this every Monday. Colin right, Colin wrong, and here we go. Where Colin was right? Bears finally all in on Caleb Williams. do I know. Justin Fields has scrubbed his bears social media accounts. It's what the kids do.

Whatevs. It's also the right decision. Three years in, his numbers have plateaued. Jordan Love made quantum leaks from week five to week 12. Three years, he's the worst fourth quarter quarterback in the league. Barry Zach Wilson-like numbers in the weaker NFC. I don't know why the Chicago media just parallel. by the thought of moving off him, but you're just not seeing enough growth.

I do think he deserves a second shot somewhere, and I think he's earned it. He's an athlete. He moves. He's got a pretty good whip. He can throw it. But right now in that defensive culture with Chicago, a franchise that can't get quarterbacks right, clearly they're making the right decision, moving on to drafting Caleb Williams.

Where Colin was wrong. Daniel Jeremiah comes on this show and others, a very respected former scout for multiple team personnel guy. He's got J.J. McCarthy going eighth to Atlanta. Jay Mack has been on this for six months. I don't see it. I see a guy that's too slender, six, three, and two hundred pounds. A little spindly to me.

I look at him, and I think Michigan coach, Michigan O-Line, Michigan run game, Michigan defense. A lot of guys could have won in that system. But increasingly, people that I respect are just love him. So now I do think he's better than the Zach Wilson, who I didn't buy it all or a Johnny Mansell. I think he's got some talent. I think he moves well. He's got a pretty good. arm. So I'm not saying, you know, bust. I just don't see him as a top 10 quarterback. Late first,

maybe, early second. That makes sense to me, somebody that can sit for a year and develop with the right offensive coach. But I'm wrong on this. People I respect like him a lot. Where Colin was right? Russell Wilson now acknowledging himself that the future in Denver is at best tenuous, a report by Jeremy Fowler, ESPN, respected reporter, that he would take a veteran minimum for the right spot. Listen, I said from the very beginning, it's a weird fit. He is a very hopeful, optimistic guy. Sean, his coach, who I love, can be a little caustic and outspoken.

I never thought it was a perfect fit. And I also think that Sean was so close with Drew Breeze, whoever the quarterback was in Denver, it was going to be difficult. I think Denver goes out in drafts like a Bow Nix from Oregon. So we had a feeling this would end in pretty soon. Where Colin was right. Andy Reid set to sign a new contract. I never bought into this retirement talk.

I called two people in the NFL I trust. They just rolled their eyes at the reports. I mean, for the record, there have been coaches that have retired and had good quarterbacks. But I think if you have Patrick Mahomes in his prime for another four or five years, you just don't retire, right? There's times to retire, and Andy's getting up there in age, but I also think he's a creative soul and a play designer and personality that likes to work and likes to help others, and I just don't think it's the time to leave.

I think he's got five minimum great years left. Where Colin was wrong. The Mavericks are good, and Kyrie Irving is crushing. In the last eight games, Dallas is 7-1. Kyrie's happy, 27 a game shooting 56% from the floor. I never thought this would work because Luca doesn't play defense, either does Kyrie. Kyrie is, you know, a lot of drama, but it's working. They're playing really good basketball, and they've beaten good teams.

They beat OKC. They beat the Knicks. They beat Phoenix. They have the best record in the NBA in clutch games, 16 and 7. So it is working. I was a cynic of it. But right now it looks good. Where Colin was right?

I said that's a couple weeks ago. Boston's going to roll through the east. New York, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Philadelphia. They're not beating this team. Boston goes to New York wins again. By the way, we also said the Drew Holiday acquisition was really smart. We were sort of saying that we thought Marcus Smart, who was inconsistent offensively, hot and cold. Drew Holliday is like a...

significantly more offensively gifted and consistent version of Marcus Smart. We love that move. And by the way, Milwaukee's got good players. They got dame. They're a shell of themselves what they were with Drew Holiday. So right now, Boston is easily the best team proving it again this week and in the east. Where Colin was right. After the surprising suspension, excuse me, of the Eagles Big Dom, the security guy,

a report that Nick Sariani, the coach on the sidelines regularly got a into skirmishes with players because he took over some of the discipline role. My thing on Nick Seriani is sometimes it feels like he's a coordinator. Like he just sometimes as a coach, there's a certain gravitas, you've got to be above the fray. And listen, he can obviously win games with the right coordinators. I don't have Philadelphia making the playoffs. But according to a story, he was regularly getting into tiffs and arguments with players once the security guy, Big Dom left, that's not good.

Where Colin was right? Been saying for years, I think the Green Bay Packers last 25 years draft and develop as well as anybody, and Bleacher Report this weekend went back and looked at the last draft. You know who is number three? Quality of draft? The Green Bay Packers. Go look at their wide receiver and tight-end draft picks.

Go look at their offensive line for 20 years. I don't know, is it because they don't have an owner? Does it go back to Ron Wolf and sort of his system teaching GM after GM? Whatever it is, the Packers do the draft incredibly well. Maybe it's because they know they're not a hot free agent market. But last year, once again, not shocking, the Green Bay Packers nailed another draft. I've had my issues through the years with Green Bay. only Pittsburgh, in my opinion,

drafts and develops both sides of the ball as consistently well over the last 20 years, Steelers and Packers, where Colin was right and where Colin was wrong. So there was a, I guess it was a moment and incident this weekend where a really good Duke player, they got beat by Wake Forest, and fans stormed the court and the player got injured. We saw this with Caitlin Clark. People storm the court.

Players get knocked over. So first of all, asking college kids to be adults, it's not going to work. And now you can drink in most of these arenas and football stadiums. So asking a 19-year-old to have self-awareness, forget it. It's just trouble. But I do think, I put a lot of this on the administration at Wake Forest. New rule. If you're hosting a Duke, a Kentucky.

a Carolina, a Kansas, especially if it's a national TV game, a weekend game, and they're coming to your arena. How about tripling your security force? How about going from like 12 people to 30? You only have to do it once a year. You have the budget for it. All these schools pay their coaches a lot and the facilities are expensive. Ramp up your security force. Also, it's not hard to tell both teams, hey, listen, this is going to get emotional.

when the game ends, do your best job to go to your huddle, we'll put security around you, and you can walk off the floor. Everything is solvable. Again, I don't love fans running on the court, but I don't want to be old guy yelling at the sky. You're never, it doesn't matter. I've seen it happen.

Hank Aaron hit a home run in the 70s, and people were rushing onto the field. You're never going to get fans, inebriated, lubricated fans 19 years old in a college campus to have total self-awareness. This is what they do. You know, they get lubricated. They have fun.

It's Duke. It's a big brand. You can't triple quadruple security one time a year. In the SEC, what do they do? Security around the coach. They don't do that in the PAC-12 because you don't need to do that in the PAC-12. I don't even know if they do it in the Big 12 with a Big Ten or the ACC. But in the SEC, the administrators know.

You put four or five security guards around a Nick Sabin, Kirby smart that's what you do seems to me this would solve a lot of it the Duke head coach John Shire on the court storming he didn't like it disappointed we lost but look for me it's I'm more concerned

about the well-being of our guys you know flips sprains his ankle what are we going to ban court storm like when are we going to ban that like how many times does a player have to get into something where they get punched or they get pushed or they get taunted right

in their face and it's a dangerous thing now some people are suggesting you could sue the kids and I do think in the second half the public address announcer could make several every three minutes I've heard this before when I've gone to big events do not come on the field you can be prosecuted I think that would help it would slow a few people down but you can't legislate everything people are going to speed on the freeway you're going to get idiots on airplanes You can't legislate everything. Kids, inebrated arena, when Kentucky's in town or Carolina, some are going to storm the court. It's up to the university.

It's not difficult for once or twice a year to triple security, have four or five players around the Duke or the Kansas bench, whoever's visiting in your arena. And the minute that thing gets close, they surround the team, players are told, don't worry about shaking hands. We can do it later. We'll do it under the arena. We'll do it in the locker rooms. Get off the floor immediately.

Run to your bench. We'll surround you and walk you off. It's not going to be ideal, but the idea of banning, storming the court. I went to a football game in Seattle this year between Seattle and Oregon. Good luck when Washington on the last play of the game, you know, holds off Oregon and wins. Good luck telling 9,000 college kids, hey, stay put 9 bud lights in. It's not going to happen. All right, Peter King retired today.

Well, he announced his retirement from full-time writing this morning. covered the NFL for 44 years and done not only a splendid job, but broke a lot of stories, helped a lot of people, and the outpouring of affection for Peter King was noticeable this morning. And I told our staff, I said, well, we should not Bon Voyage, but we probably should bring him on the show and salute the great Peter King, who's now joining us live. Man, so, are you going to write another, like, are you done writing

period. Like you're never going to put pen to paper again. Is that true? I don't know. I don't know, Colin. I mean, I just decided that I was not going to do my column anymore. Football Morning in America. I've been doing it online now for 27 years. And I just felt like it was probably time to step away from that. And quite honestly, I have no idea what I'm going to do. I don't have any plans. I have no, nobody is talking to me about a job. I mean, at some point, I'll think about it, but I think I'm just going to get bored for a little while. That's not a bad idea. Well, I spent the week in Rhode Island, I would suggest go there, eat lobster, drink some good beers. I did it for a week, and I had a ball. So if you don't know what you're going to do, that's a good

place to start. I want to go to here, though. So I watched, when I flew back, I watched, I've been watching the documentary, Dynasty, Jeff Benedict's great book, terrific reporting. And I got to tell you, Bruske's emotional and funny. Randy Moss is hysterical. Ty Law is a stand-up comedian. Brady is Raw. Episode 4 is one of the best docs I've ever seen. Belichick comes off as a little defiant, a little defensive.

Ernie Adams is incredibly likable. Even Robert Kraft is a billionaire. He comes across as a guy that loves his Patriots. Apparently, Bill doesn't love how he's being viewed. And Peter, my takeaway on this entire doc is the more he, one, the lessee smiled, is that Bill was so engaging early and he's just not now. What did I miss? Was it Spygate?

What happened? Go back to your 20 years ago when you covered him. Well, you know, I haven't talked to him since Spigate because I said and reported some stuff he didn't like. And look, I think this, I think Bill Belichick, I think we have to remember one thing about, you know, this project. And that is that, you know, it was a project that Jeff Benedict did, and he did it with the full cooperation of the crafts. Yeah.

And with Robert and Jonathan and the family. And I think that it's clear there have been times and situations where there was no love lost between the crafts and Bill Belichick. And my feeling is that if someone had done this with the entree of Bill Belichick and did it all from Bill Belichick's point of view, well, you'd probably be seeing a different side of the story. I just think it's human nature, honestly, and I think it's human nature to look at a situation and to basically say that, look, if Bill Belichick, who is hard,

to love in the first place and if he is a not necessarily tangential figure but if he's a figure who isn't the main part of the story you're probably going to get some parts of that that don't look good for bill bellichick yeah you know it's that to andy read and i said i didn't buy the andy reed retiring stories because i don't know what it is about offensive coaches but many of them are play designers and it's it's more of an art-full joyful experience. We are constantly having to evolve. Defensive coaches is a lot about don't turn it over, dominate the clock and field position.

Offensive guys like Shanahan and Andy reads literally in the offseason, Sent me plays he's drawing up. Oh, we're going to use this one early in September. You've got to see this. And I look at Andy and I think he's such an educator and teacher. It's not just Mahomes. Andy's aged very gracefully. was did Andy ever have a grumpy side or a difficult side when i because i don't i mean i know philadelphia but i didn't follow him when he was in his 20s 30s what do you make of the arc

for reed juxtaposed against belichick i first met andy reed in 1995 i was working for sports illustrated i was in green bay doing a story on the packers and he came up to me and said i don't remember his exact quote but it's something like i really wanted to do the job that you have right now when I went to college, I wanted to write football for Sports Illustrated. And so I've known him for almost 30 years. And the one thing about Andy Reed that people, I think, don't know well enough is how incredibly imaginative he is. And he's got a coach on his staff, Matt Nagy, who everybody was down on him with the

Bears. But this guy is really one of the bright play researchers. play designers that there is so much so when they were struggling against new england in December a play that matt negie brought to andy read and they put in their offense was from the nineteen forty two columbia pen game in the ivy league they called it high and patrick mahomes was lined up in a three-point stance for the first time in his NFL career not under center And it was just a real weird play. But it jumped started their offense, and they ended up beating the Patriots that day.

That is why, in my opinion, Andy Reid's borderline brilliant, because he understands that it's all not going to be pretty. And in a year when Kansas City was 15th in the NFL and scoring, instead of one or two or three, they had trouble all year moving the ball. So you know what they did? they got really weird and cutesy and imaginative. And that guy on the screen right there, Andy Reed with Patrick Mahomes, they made it work. You know, it's interesting. When I got into, when I was a kid, I wanted to be a baseball announcer.

And my first job out of college, I was a baseball announcer. I do an inning of play-by-play for the Las Vegas stars, Padres affiliate. Jack McKeon was the GM of the Padres, a really funny guy. And it was a dream job. And then I don't know if it, I lived in Vegas, it was gambling on football, but you've been in this sport long enough to know when you started, baseball had more of an imprint on the media, the fabric, and social currency in America. I'm looking at the new salary cap numbers exploding for the NFL. Peter, I could do 80% of NFL football on my show and my ratings would go up. I monitor it to not become the NFL network.

in your opinion it can't just be the scarcity argument because NFL's had scarcity forever it can't just be that I do think gambling has been jet fuel people do not turn off bad games anymore they just keep watching bad games

but in your opinion baseball was here football was here and it's flipped you've covered one you love both what do you think it is is there a primary reason I think that football is the absolute perfect television sport. It fits into a neat three-hour window.

And for so long, until last year when Theo Epstein grabbed the tiger by the tail and throttled Major League Baseball and said, we're cutting 20 minutes out of every game, and I think they're going to cut more than that. Baseball became this plodding, boring story. That's what happened to baseball. And there are too many establishment baseball guys who said there's nothing wrong with baseball. And it took Neo Epstein to really change things. And look, maybe it's too late. I don't know. All I know is now, Colin, when I look at football and you hear people complain about having to pay $599 for a football game, here's the only thing I say about that. Yes, they complain.

And I'm not saying that they love doing this, but why was the Miami Kansas City game that was on Peacock? Why did that get significantly better numbers, even though it was pay-per-view than the game last year, Jacksonville and the Chargers in the same time slot? I'll tell you why. Because the NFL did a smart thing. They put Mahomes on pay-per-view.

They put Tua on pay-per-view. They had a great game on pay-per-view. And all I'm saying is that people might get upset, but people are going to go and find and watch these games, no matter where they are. That's what the NFL has on sporting society right now. So, you know, I was, I've talked about this for a while. It's really interesting to me.

It's fascinating. The bears are over 100. years old and have never had a great quarterback. Green Bay has had, if Jordan loves as good as he looked at the end of the year, this will be their fourth. He looked really good. It is crazy. It's like, they just do quarterbacks right, receivers right. It's Green Bay, draft and develop well. And I said, I would understand if Caleb Williams did a Manning or an L.A. and said, this isn't going to work for me. But if he did that, and I, been told by his camp, he's not going to do that. He thinks there's a way to win. It's Houston.

But, I mean, Iber Fluse could be out if they start poorly. He could be out in seven weeks. Do you think, if knowing Chicago's history, a defensive culture, they don't have a great all-time receiver or quarterback. It's just the way poor owners, stadium issues. If you were the agent for Caleb Williams, you've been in this league forever, would you consider an L. Way Manning move for him? I wouldn't, and I'll tell you why. Because I understand that a lot of people think, oh, Chicago's the place quarterbacks go to die. And I understand that, and you've seen a lot of them do that there in Chicago.

However, and first of all, Colin, I will just say I'm absolutely opposed to Chicago taking Caleb Williams, because in my opinion, you could own the next two drafts by trading the first pick in this draft and getting a ransom for it. And I would do that and build with eight or ten picks in the first two rounds in the next two years around Justin Fields, who definitely is good enough to win with. Now, having said all that, if they do make that move and they do go get Caleb Williams and they build around him,

It's an eminently winnable scenario for them because they're starting to build and they do now have some pieces in place. So, and can you imagine if you're Caleb Williams, you're the first great quarterback since Sid Luckman, you know, to walk down Michigan Avenue? It would be an amazing thing. He would be the toast of the town. He would own Chicago. Forget the Cubs. The Bears own Chicago. when they're great.

And I think he would have a great chance to do that. Yeah, I'm not a Justin Fields fan, but I've had too many NFL GMs and scouting guys. Just tell me how good they think Caleb Williams is. And he's not flawless, by the way. He does sometimes veer toward the spectacular and not take the layups, which, by the way, Mahomes, early in his career, had a little bit of that, but Patrick has been so good the last two years.

Just taken underneath stuff and layups. I always say this about Jordan. Michael Jordan twice a night would make a play you'd never seen, but mostly he just hit mid-range jumpers. Mahom, I mean, that's what Michael scored 24 of his points on mid-range jumpers. He knew, take what they give you. Mahomes has become that. Twice a game, I can't believe what I'm watching. And then 24 times a game, he throws a curl route for nine yards.

He just makes the play that's there. That's right. It's brilliant. He's got the ability to do things you've never seen before, but he's so. good at knowing when to take the underneath stuff. Yep. Finally, I like Russell Wilson. I don't think he's in his prime, but I never thought the Denver situation worked. Sean can be bit cynical, outspoken, raw. Russell is almost to a fault, optimistic and hopeful, let's ride, can turn people off. Some people think it's inauthentic. So I didn't think the personalities worked. I think Denver's going to go get a Bo Nex or somebody at a college. and Sean's going to mold him to be his guy.

But Russell to the Steelers make sense to me, and I'll tell you, I want you to throw back if you disagree with this or agree. Steelers works. He doesn't have to set a culture in Pittsburgh. Tomlin does that. They've got young receivers, both are a bit, in my opinion, outspoken, and at times immature. Russell's the opposite. He's mature. He's committed.

He's efficient. He's refined. You can't send to Justin Fields to Pittsburgh. He hasn't refined himself yet. Russell's all refined, all efficient, all accurate, all mature, married, kids, grown up. I think Russell and Pittsburgh, I love their roster. I think he's perfect. I think it works.

What say you on that, Colin, you, I have been saying this for a month. It's perfect what you just said. And the reason is, think about it. The Pittsburgh Steelers can employ Russell Wilson for $1.2 million this year. It is a prove-it season for Russell Wilson. They were down on him in Seattle at the end. He goes to Denver. It doesn't work in year one.

And it really doesn't work in year two. So now everybody's saying, okay, is Russell Wilson done or can he be salvaged? So Russell Wilson goes to Pittsburgh. And look, it makes no sense for the Steelers to go into this season. this coming season with the two quarterbacks, the two incumbents, you know, Pickett and Rudolph that they have, makes no sense whatsoever. Not in a division with Burrow, Lamar Jackson, and Deshawn Watson. It's nonsensical to do that.

You almost get a free look for a year with Russell Wilson. And what if he's really good? What if he's really good married to Arthur Smith for this year? and then they end up keeping them. And she's like, oh, isn't that the coach of the heat? And I looked over and I'm like, that's our exposed to. You live in Miami. You had to go to Hawaii to get surf. I mean, you could. It's a million, the Caribbean's around the corner. Yeah. And he could not have been nicer.

Played pretty fantastic all season and then did not win the Super Bowl, but Chiefs, D.C., Steve Spagnola, was impressed with the Brock Purdy performance in the Super Bowl. Colin, he reached out to the QB. Here's what he said. I just texted Brock the other day. I tried to track down a cell number. I just wanted to tell him how much respect I have for him.

Hell yeah. Dude, I love it. What a terrific game he played. I mean, he's such a quality guy, strong Christian man, and I respect all of that. No, that's nice. Any deeper thoughts besides that's nice? I don't know. Brock Purdy's 17 and 4 career record.

You love a good record. I acknowledge that he is more of a playmaker than I have given him credit for. And I thought he played okay in the Super Bowl, not great. Okay. Four or two record in the playoffs. One of them was a loss against Eagles when he got injured like the first or second series. He finished fourth in the MVP voting this year, Colin. Well, I couldn't give a rip about it.

You've got a quarterback. You do? Yes. Again, I don't understand people. In a division with McVeigh, Pete Carolyn Shanahan, with the worst. owner, the feeling is the Bidwell family is the least capitalized,

the poorest, worst game day revenue. He got them to the playoffs with Cliff Kingsbury. And you think I'm doubting him? It's like I always say about Matt Nagy. He got Mitch Trubisky to the playoffs twice, and in the division, Aaron Rogers was in his prime,

Stafford was in his prime, and Kirk Cousins was in his prime, and he got Mitch Trubisky to the playoffs twice. And you don't think Matt Nagy deserves another head coaching? opportunity. I didn't say that. I'm just not the biggest fan. He's a spectacular talent. I wish he was 6'3.

He can't make third place in his own division. Listen, I used to like Kyla Marie. I have not seen the improvement.

I know he was injured. Well, that's because he didn't need... Go back to his first, second, third year. You don't see the embryo? No, there was the first three years. But then he plateaued. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But his plateau is, I can get a team with a bad owner

and a coach that got fired to the playoffs. If that's his ceiling, I'm good with it. It's weird how you are, like, defensive. It's crazy. He's hyper-athletic, twitchy, accurate, and throws a gorgeous deep ball. I'm not sure what I'd like. Look at these throws. Your brand is not hyper-athletic-twitchy into those guys.

Yeah, it is. You're more of the cerebral, smart quarterbacks who get up to the line and change plays. That ain't Kyler. He's like, oh, we're tuck and run. He throws a beautiful ball from the pocket. By the way, this whole video game thing, I don't love it. But again, Bidwell family, McVeigh Rams, richest owner, Stan Cronkey, Yorks, Niners, Shanahan, Pete Carroll.

These are well-capitalized, big brands, great coaches, stacked rosters. he gets to the playoffs. Okay. So he's getting allegedly Marvin Harrison, right, in the draft. I've watched between Connor, Kyler, and Harrison, and that tight end they have, this team's going to be really good. Really? I'll make a prediction.

Oh, here we go. Here we go. Let's lay it out there. Most improved teams in the league next year. Stop. Arizona and Washington. Both NFC teams. I'll buy Washington.
