Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. For 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:01:17 With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:01:37 I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app,
Starting point is 00:02:02 Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Hurd.
Starting point is 00:02:26 You're listening to Foxxport's. Sports Radio. Welcome back to the herd, Joy Taylor, Alex Curry, in for Colin Cowherd all week as he is touring Italy. He is in Rome right now. Go check out his Insta. Yeah, we'll give you a peek of, don't go check it out now. Watch the show, but we'll give you a peek.
Starting point is 00:02:48 We'll give you a peek of Colin's Instagram posted a little bit here on the show. He's enjoying his vacation. NBA playoffs are in full swing, and they have been really, really fun and really fun and really competitive. The ratings are up 23%, so the fans are enjoying it as well, not just making this up. It's very important to remind everyone that there are, you know, people still like the NBA. It's important. Amina Smith is joining us. She is the host and reporter for NBC Sports Boston, who had a huge win last night, a must-win game. And not only did they pull it off, look at the Sal Horford, you know, one time for the old heads. What's going on? He had an incredible
Starting point is 00:03:27 game. How impressed are you with Al Horford's 30 point performance in game four? I mean, I'm so impressed with Al Horford, a career high 30 points in the playoffs. But I want people to understand that Al Horford has been playing this way all season long. Like, he was a key piece that was added to this roster. And credit to Brad Stevens, president of basketball operations, when everyone saw that Al Horford was being brought back to Boston, people wondered, okay, is he washed because he's 35 years old. Is he going to be able to contribute as much as they need him to contribute for them to kind of go for Banner 18? And Al Horford has done his job and so much more. He's like a calming
Starting point is 00:04:05 presence in that locker room and obviously getting it done on the court as well. Six double doubles in the last 11 games with 30 points, Joy, 30 points out of 35 year old Al Horford. He's been hearing everybody call him old Al and he's showing y'all that look, these legs, these knees may still work and I got it. we're talking to amina smith no i i love i love the animosity that he brought last night you know you had a little moment with yannis the likable lovable yonis and the celtics are are not having it with him which which i like i like the animosity that's going on in all these series a little bit attention it's great for the fans it's grateful great for rivalries and uh he did that he did that
Starting point is 00:04:45 move that i bet i bet and took over so i love to see it um so you're not surprised with how the Celtics have, you know, put together these performances and even the series with Janus in the box then? No, I'm not surprised at all because this team all season long from the time that they turned things around back in January when they were 11th in the East and then they went on to finish the season second in the East. And this team flipped the switch. I don't know if it's Emaudoka, which I think a lot of people are forgetting that he's a
Starting point is 00:05:19 first year head coach. And they're right now in the conference semifinals. which I think a lot of people have them in seven games beaten the bucks, but they look like they have the bucks on their heels. But I'm not surprised at how this team is performing. They've been faced with adversity all season long and then been able to overcome it. Jason Tatum, 30 points, 13 rebounds.
Starting point is 00:05:39 Whenever he's called to step up and be that superstar for this team, he's able to do that. Jalen Brown as well, putting up 18 points and three rebounds in this game. This team is so deep. I think a lot of people overlook that. And a lot of people overlooked that also when they were playing in that series against the Brooklyn Nets too. I had so many people, you know, I'm originally from New York. So a lot of my friends, they're just like, you know, Katie, Carrie, like, they're going to come in there.
Starting point is 00:06:03 They're going to beat Boston. I'm like, look, y'all, I'm telling you, this Boston team is deeper than you think. They faced adversity all season long. So what we're seeing right now is not a surprise to anybody in the Boston area. Just a surprise to everybody else around the nation. Well, I think the thing with Boston is we've seen them. with this kind of core group a little bit underachieve. And you mentioned Brad Stevens moving into the front office and EMA coming in.
Starting point is 00:06:30 So there's a little bit of carryover, I think, in the expectations for this particular Boston team that they don't have quite enough to be competitive in the series with the other next level superstars. For example, Yon is the best player in the league. So what has EMA brought to this team that has sort of switched them into another gear? I think that what Eames brought is that he's gotten this team to buy in on the defensive end of the floor. I think, you know, you take a look at a lot of NBA teams. They only go as far as their superstar player. And Jason Tatum is obviously the superstar player on this Boston team.
Starting point is 00:07:05 And I think that he's bought into that defensive end of the floor as well. And you're also seeing him be more physical in his game. You didn't see that last season. Jason Tatum playing with an edge, being able to drive to the basket, being able to use his body to sacrifice his body. I think he's taking his game to a completely different level. And I think that's where you see this team being able to get over that hump, where they do have the same core players, they have the Jalen Brown, they have the Jason Tatum, they have the Markets Smart, they have the guys that have been there this entire time. But I think it's these guys taking
Starting point is 00:07:39 their games to a completely different level that has this team performing the way they are right now in the conference semifinals. I think it was, was it Jalen that got into it a little bit with Janice there. Oh, yeah. So talk a little bit about the tension that's going on in this series, because obviously we're seeing a lot of it in each of these series. And this particular postseason, I think, has, you know, had a little uptick in the, you know, questionable officiating, but also in these, the ejections and technical fouls.
Starting point is 00:08:10 And I feel like we're reviewing every single foul that's going on. But particularly that moment to me last night, I was like, oh, okay, let's just, yeah. A little extra spice in this one because, look, Janus in the bucks are very likable. It's hard to really pick apart, especially after the performance that Janus had in the finals last season. He really kind of shut the door and all the critics of his game overall and how he's been really throughout this postseason and playing without Chris Middleton. But yeah, you're seeing this moment. We're not friends right now. Talk about the tension that's going on between these two teams, the healthy amount of tension.
Starting point is 00:08:46 It's a healthy amount of tension. but I think a little bit comes from just the outside noise here in Boston. Obviously, like, Boston, the market, the media, it's a very competitive market. Like the standard here is to win championships. And you talk about a guy like Jalen Brown, he's been here his whole career. And that's all they hear. Like you talk about Kyrie Irving. This goes back to like Kyrie Irving coming back inside a TD Garden.
Starting point is 00:09:10 And people criticize these Celtics players for being so nice for saying, you know, oh, good game. Like, you know, after those type of games, like the media fans, like they don't want to hear any of that. They don't want to make nice with anybody. And I think it's almost like the players have kind of taken on that personality, especially in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:09:30 And Jalen Brown has to be the most level-headed guy that I've ever come into contact with in terms of seeing him play and being out there on the court. I've never really seen him be like that, especially with Janice, who's a super likable guy. But I kind of loved it last night. I loved it to see him be in a competitive mode
Starting point is 00:09:47 where he's like, look, we're not friends right now. Like we're trying to win a championship. We're trying to move on to the next round. You guys are the defending champs. Like, it's not time for you to hold my shoulder and try to, you know, be my friend. Same thing with Marcus Smart. Marcus Smart had tried to extend the olive branch to Janus out of the Kumpo while he was on the floor.
Starting point is 00:10:03 They got tangled up. And Janus kind of, you know, flag Marcus Smart off. And Marcus Smart was like, you know what? Forget it. Like, if you guys want to play like that, then we're going to have that keep that same energy. We're going to keep that same energy on this end. And I think that Jaylon Brown definitely. embody that. We're talking to Amina Smith, host and reporter for NBC Sports Boston. I thought that was a huge win for Boston. I'm loving it the way that the playoffs are shaping up. Now, obviously, you've spent a lot of time in Miami, as have I. I am openly a heat fan, and I'm a little bit nervous. I'm a little bit nervous about how this series is going. But how do you think the rest of this will play out? Because while Hardin had an incredible performance, and I did enjoy seeing, you know, some vintage Hardin, even if it was,
Starting point is 00:10:47 at the cost of the Miami heat. I don't think the heat are going to shoot 20% from three moving forward. Kyle Lowry is out, so maybe we'll see some Duncan Robinson. You know, they're paying him enough to go in there and shoot a couple threes and get off the floor. But really from the Sixers perspective, do you think that Hardin is going to be able to keep that level performance going throughout the rest of that series? I feel like this series between Miami and the Sixers is such a toss-up
Starting point is 00:11:13 because you had James Harden, who hadn't scored over 25 points. since late March and then goes into game four and just becomes vintage James Harden. He said himself after that game that, you know, having him be back, it feels like they kind of gotten their rhythm. And if you're a fan in Miami, you don't want to hear that. You don't want to hear that because their entire offense in Miami is going through Jimmy Butler. He's got, what, 40 points and 42 minutes in that last game.
Starting point is 00:11:40 And they still didn't win that game. Joy, you talked about being scared. Look, if Jimmy Butler is putting up 40 points in 42 minutes. and you still lose that game and then in game five, Kyle Lurie's not going to be in there. Dougger Robinson has been nowhere to be found. I would be nervous too in that series. Yeah, I am nervous.
Starting point is 00:12:00 My only, I guess, hope or saving grace here is one, I don't think that the heat are going to continue to shoot as bad as they've been shooting from three. Obviously, you live by the three, you die by the three. We know what they can do defensively, so I'm not worried about that. But, you know, James Hardin, in Miami. me is a different James Harder than in Philadelphia. We have different attractions in Miami, you know,
Starting point is 00:12:21 so attractions, some of his favorite places. You know, it depends on how you look at it, what you like to partake in. So that's what I'm hoping. There's a little bit of, you know, South Beach flu going on. I mean, listen, that's an advantage that Miami has.
Starting point is 00:12:38 Amina Smith does an amazing job hosting for NBC Sports Boston. Make sure you follow her on social media. Amina Jade TV. Thank you so much for stopping by, Amina. Thank you. I enjoyed it. Have a good one. You too. Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for. South Beach flu, James Harden. That's all I got at this point. You forget the big cities have the big distractions. And that's a big thing when you come in.
Starting point is 00:12:59 It depends. It depends. Everybody can go to, some people can go to big cities and not partake in the attractions or distractions. You know, we'll see how it goes. Certain types. Yeah. Thank you to Rick Buecker, Mary Kay Cabot, Amy Dash, and Amina Smith for joining us today on the herd. Big show today. And we have a new coworker and Tom Brady joining as the NFL analyst when he retires our lead NFL analyst. Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jay and I'm Alex English Each episode we pick it here
Starting point is 00:15:21 unpack what went down And try to make sense of how we survived it Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill Waxing all about crack in the 80s To be clear, 84's big to me Not just because of crack I'm down to talk about crack on day But just so y'all know
Starting point is 00:15:37 I mean at this point Mark this is the second episode Where we've discussed crack So I'm starting to see that there's a through line We also have AIDS on the table right now So Thank you for finishing that. sentence.
Starting point is 00:15:48 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast,

Starting point is 00:16:19 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross.
Starting point is 00:16:37 Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different. levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keer Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood,
Starting point is 00:16:55 pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free IHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. Let's get to Alex Curry with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Well, during Sunday's game four, a couple of Mazz fans had an exchange with Chris Paul's family, resulting in the fans being escorted out of the arena and banned until 2023. Now, head coach Monty Williams was obviously quick to defend his players and their families. And here's what he had to say yesterday about avoiding incidences like this in the future.
Starting point is 00:17:30 It's a hard one because it's happening more and more. And the situations are getting to a place now where I really feel like families who are in, to support their loved ones need to be protected a bit more. Whether or not we have to give these people our family members a section or sweet, something has to be done. Now, the Mavericks issued a statement yesterday afternoon explaining the situation, saying that two fans attempted to give unwanted hugs to members of Paul's family, which is so interesting because we were just talking about this yesterday.
Starting point is 00:18:15 of like fans coming up to you thinking they know you, thinking they're a part of your life and just wanting to give you hug. We had different takes. Yes. But most of the time, if you don't know someone, it is a bit jarring when they come at you and immediately take over your space. Correct. But I do like Monty's idea. Family should be in a section. Give them a sweet.
Starting point is 00:18:35 Give them a place where you do have security so families do feel safe and they can go and they can cheer on their loved ones at the highest level who have worked their entire lives to get to this moment. Yeah, I mean, I don't, I'm not against the idea of it, but I think it, you know, it's not as simple as everyone can just give a family section. First of all, different amounts of people come for, to support family members. You have people that have huge families. You have people that only have one person come. So how much space are you delegating to families? Also, there's this idea that, you know, players can just invite as many people as they want for free. They don't.
Starting point is 00:19:08 They pay for seats. And some of them want their family members close. Some people want them in a suite. sweeps are obviously sometimes more expensive than the regular tickets. Everybody doesn't make the same amount of money. There are levels to how you configure all this. Each organization isn't really interested in giving a family section, whether it's paid for or not,
Starting point is 00:19:28 because if you do a family section, you're not going to upcharge your players, right, for a family section. So then are you losing money? So it becomes very complicated. Obviously, you can't count on people keeping their hands to themselves because that's way too much to ask these days. But money is right. More and more of this is happening.
Starting point is 00:19:43 It's, I think it's a result solely of the internet. I think people feel entitled to things that they did not feel entitled to in the past. One is access. And two is this idea that you are, you belong to me in some way. Like I have, I can do what I want to you. And there's no consequences. Correct. And not every interaction is necessarily, uh, done with ill intent.
Starting point is 00:20:09 Sometimes it's just someone saying hello. Sometimes it's, you know, someone is a little inebriated and they don't know that they're being obnoxious or stepping over the line. Not that that's an excuse at all because I don't believe that it is. But to make excuses for people touching other people, don't touch other people. Don't touch other people. It's that simple. Do not touch other people. We learn this in kindergarten.
Starting point is 00:20:30 Keep your hands to yourself. You are not entitled to other people's physical attention. That is an insane concept to me. Like, I've had people walk up to me in the bar and, like, put their hands in my hair. Why are you touching me? I am not a circus animal. Do not touch me. This is not a petting zoo.
Starting point is 00:20:51 Do not touch me. And it's like, when you react that way, people get, they have this entitled idea that, like, well, I'm not touching you with the intent of harming you or upsetting you or doing something inappropriate. So therefore, why are you reacting this way? Like, I am not your property. Do not touch me. I've been in situations before. I was in downtown L.A. And obviously, like, it's an honor that anyone want to take a picture with me.
Starting point is 00:21:17 That's not what I'm saying here. But someone asked to take a selfie with me and I took, like, you take a selfie, you're next to someone. After we took the selfie, he kissed me on my head. Like, what am I supposed to do in that spot? I'm a woman. I'm by myself. I'm in downtown L.A. I'm going to choose violence in this situation.
Starting point is 00:21:34 No, I'm going to choose life. I'm going to walk away. Right? Like, I mean, obviously, I would prefer to react in the way that I want to react. But that's not why what would in the world would make you feel entitled to do that? So like was his intent to be like creepy? Probably not. But that is wildly inappropriate to do.
Starting point is 00:21:52 Yeah. So the whole idea that you're entitled to touch someone just because you want to, you're entitled to hug someone, unwanted hugs, you think it's normal to embrace someone and push your body against someone who you don't know without their consent. I don't know. What am I supposed to do with that? Family section. Family sections.
Starting point is 00:22:13 Family sections. It's probably the only choice that we're running it too. Yeah, that's what it's going to be. All right, let's move on. The Bucks went through a roller coaster of emotions earlier this offseason when Tom Brady decided to retire and then unretire, just 40 days later.
Starting point is 00:22:28 But you think it was tough for the Bucks? Think about the NFL schedule makers. The NFL Broadcasting Chief Howard Katz spoke to Sam Farmer of the L.A. Times about how Brady's retirement and unretirement changed their process. saying when Tom Brady retired, we were concerned about the strength of the NFC package because there were so many terrific Tampa Bay games that we were looking at.
Starting point is 00:22:50 And then a month later, he unretires and we have to sort of start all over again. And you kind of forget that a lot of these stadiums, yes, the game's the number one thing, but you also have concerts, different events that go on. And it's trickle-down effect. And we're slowly finding out that the goat, Tom Brady, is the defining factor. in this entire situation and full scheduling, which is also a good problem to have. It's a good problem.
Starting point is 00:23:17 You want the goat to come back and you want to be able to reschedule this whole NFL season situation. Well, yeah. I mean, that's just the power of a superstar the level of Brady. I guess the good news for the schedule makers moving forward is the next time that Tom Brady says he's retiring.
Starting point is 00:23:33 He really is. And he'll be joining us. And you know where he's going. So we won't have to worry about that when it comes to the scheduling and the rescheduling. But yeah, that's, I mean, it changes everything when you have quarterbacks, especially the level
Starting point is 00:23:45 of Tom Brady moving around who's going to be in the marquee slots for games and you know which ones you circle on the schedule, which schedule release is Thursday. Very much looking forward to that. Thursday at 8 Eastern right here on FS1 and NFL Network.
Starting point is 00:24:01 Yep. That's going to be a fun one. Win lost, win a lot. Friday show is going to be a good one. All right, let's move on. As you mentioned earlier, Dallas mayor, Eric Johnson, has floated the idea that Dallas should be the next city considered for a potential NFL expansion team. Obviously, there's a major hurdle here. Jerry Jones Cowboys are one of America's most popular teams and dominate the Dallas sports scene. Now, Mayor Johnson knows the Cowboys are the big ticket in town, but he still believes two teams could coexist. Here's his response to the question about the NFL
Starting point is 00:24:34 expansion. The answer is Dallas. Why? We are about to pass the Chicago metro area and become the number three metro area in the U.S., which would make us the largest U.S. metro area without two teams. Football is king here. Dallas needs an expansion team, and we would be able to sustain two NFL teams better than L.A. or New York went on to say a step further, if L.A. and New York can both support an NFC and AFC team, then Dallas, the capital of football surely can as well. They've won three playoff games in 25 years, so I would not call Dallas the capital of football. No disrespect to the Dallas Cowboys. that blows my mind every single time you say it.
Starting point is 00:25:12 Yeah. That is crazy. And I think it's all going to come down to what Jerry Jones thinks. If Jerry Jones is okay with it, then it might happen. But if he's not, this is going to take away fans from his franchise. Well, to be clear, first of all, I don't believe this is happening at all. No. This was a suggestion floated by the mayor.
Starting point is 00:25:28 Yes. This is not something that is like reported to be happening or anything of the sort. Yes. I don't believe it will happen. No. Now, it would make Jerry a lot of money because that team would play in Jerry's world. but no. Like, first of all, you can't have one expansion team.
Starting point is 00:25:43 So it would have to be multiple expansion teams, which then changes the entire landscape of the sport, which thrives off of the fact that there is a tremendous amount of urgency in every game. So this only takes away from that when you add to the sport, add games, add expansion teams. If you were going to have an expansion team, you would do it internationally, Toronto, Mexico City, or London. And you're not going to have fans in Dallas that are also fans of the Cowboys
Starting point is 00:26:08 and whatever expansion team there is. that way. That's not how it works with sports fans. Do they have the number of people to support a second team? Maybe. Sure. But that doesn't mean that it's the right location for an expansion team. And for that matter, New York and the Giants, they have had fan bases there forever.
Starting point is 00:26:29 The Chargers fan base is two hours away when they moved, which is San Diego. Close enough. So there is some carryover to Los Angeles. It's not like they moved across the country. like the St. Louis did to Los Angeles, which there was a fan base in here with Los Angeles with the Rams to begin with. Yeah. So it's, it's when you have an expansion team like that, you have to create a fan base, which is not going to happen in Dallas when it is America's team. He is right about that. Yes. It is America's team and it is the Dallas Cowboys. And also,
Starting point is 00:27:00 I don't think that Jerry would do this. Jerry's not splitting, uh, splitting the shine there in Dallas with anybody. Yeah, you're not going to share, you're not going to share your spotlight. But as you mentioned, internationally makes the most sense. NFL's already playing international games this season because they are trying to expand the game of football. As it should. That would be a no-brainer. If it happens, that would be a no-brainer.
Starting point is 00:27:23 Yes. London, Germany, and Mexico City are the international games this year. That's Alex Curry with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Heard Lye News. All right, we have a report from Italy. We'll get to that next.
Starting point is 00:27:38 And next and best for last, We play tears of joy. I'll give you my AFC quarterback tears on the herd. Starting point is 00:28:34 Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying.

Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English.
Starting point is 00:30:13 Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:30:35 We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:30:56 Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Trip Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:31:25 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.
Starting point is 00:31:41 I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free, our Heart Radio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. Welcome back to The Herd. Joy Taylor in for Colin Cowherd. It's been a fun show today. Very exciting show.
Starting point is 00:32:04 Tom Brady will be joining the Fox Sports family. as our co-worker. In the near future. In the near future. He is not retired yet. But when he does, he will be here at Fox Sports as our lead NFL analyst. That's very exciting news came down this morning. Thank you to Rick Bueger, Mary Kay Cabot, Amy Dash, and Amina Smith for joining us today.
Starting point is 00:32:23 It's now time for Best for Last. And we're going to play the Tears of Joy. So the 2022 NFL schedules had to be released Thursday, 8 Eastern on FS1 NFL Network. and I can't wait for win-loss and to see which games are in prime time and which games are on Fox. And so I'm going to present my tears of joy. So I'll separate the NFL quarterbacks into my own tiers. And let's start with the AFC quarterbacks. And then tomorrow we'll do the NFC.
Starting point is 00:32:49 So my tiers are superstar, self-explanatory, best of the best. Starter, you can start, not sure how far you can carry a team. Bridge, you're just a filler while the team is looking for a Super Bowl quarterback. And the last one is unknown. We still need more information. So, Alex, who do we have up first? Which tier would you place Josh Allen in? Josh Allen, highest passer rating in a single postseason in NFL history.
Starting point is 00:33:13 First quarterback in NFL history with 4,000 passing yards, 35 plus touchdowns, five plus rushing touchdowns in back-to-back seasons. He has had three playoff appearances in four seasons with the Bills, and they've won the AFC East back-to-back seasons. He looks like the future of that division. Obviously, Josh Allen is a superstar. Yeah. All right.
Starting point is 00:33:35 Which tier would you place Tua in? Tua Tua Tua Tula Tula Tula Tulae. He is the starting quarterback for my Miami Dolphins, 13 and 8 record over his first two seasons. He is entering his first year under their new head coach, Mike McDaniel, the former 49ers offensive coordinator. They made some big moves this off season. Obviously, Tyree Kill being the biggest move,
Starting point is 00:33:57 highest non-paid quarterback in the NFL, four years, $120 million. They put a bunch of pieces around him, really leaned into the offensive side of the ball. So we will find out, but right now he is unknown. Ooh. All right. Which tier would you place Mack Jones in?
Starting point is 00:34:14 Mack Jones, 10 and 7 record with the Patriots led the playoffs, the Patriots to the playoffs in his rookie season, named to the Pro Bowl. Only rookie quarterback to lead his team to a winning record and playoff appearance last season. Still a lot of questions about him. You know, kind of a limited ceiling. He's not super athletic, but that's still a very difficult thing to do.
Starting point is 00:34:32 and he had a nice rookie season. I think he's going to still develop. I know everyone's panicking about Bill Belichick, but I still think he's a pretty good coach. And I'm going to put Mack Jones as a starter. All right. Which tier would you place Zach Wilson in? Oh, spicy Zach.
Starting point is 00:34:49 Spicy Zach. Three and ten record in his rookie season. Ranked last and completion percentage and pass the rating amongst all qualified quarterbacks, but he's only 22 years old. He did improve in the second half of the season after missing four games due to a sprain knee. He has a long way to go.
Starting point is 00:35:06 He is unknown. All right. Which tier would you place Lamar Jackson in? Lamar. Most wins, 37 by any quarterback before turning 25 in NFL history. League MVP, only quarterback in NFL history with multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons. He is one of the most unique and dynamic players in the league. He is going to get paid.
Starting point is 00:35:28 He's the future of this franchise, the future of the league. He is a superstar. there you go. Which tier would you place Joe Burrow in? Oh, Joey Ice. Big time Burrow. Led the Bengals to the Super Bowl last season. The Bengals, who hadn't won a playoff game since 1990.
Starting point is 00:35:47 First number one overall pick to lead the team to the Super Bowl within his first two seasons, which should tell you something about the number one overall picks that we've had. Joey B is incredible. I've always been in on Burrow. He's been a superstar before he even got to the league, but he is obviously in the superstar category. Yep.
Starting point is 00:36:03 Which tier would you place Deshawn Watson in? Well, Deshawn led the NFL in passing yards in passing yards per attempt in 2020. He was a pro-baller in each of his last three seasons. Obviously, he did not play last season. And he did lead the Texans to two AFC South titles, the Texans, the team that I do not consider to be a really well-run organization.
Starting point is 00:36:23 But he might still face suspension. He hasn't played in the year. If he gets suspended this year, it'll be even more time off. He is a, superstar when he is playing, but we have no idea what's going to happen with him, so I'm going to put him in an unknown. All right. Which tier would you place Kenny Pickett in? Kenny Pickett. Love this fake slide move. That's over, by the way. Thanks, Kenny Pickett.
Starting point is 00:36:44 Four-year starter at Pitt, 2021 Heisman Trophy finalists. Most touchdown passes in a single season in ACC history. A lot of people are concerned about his hand size. I don't understand why that was an issue because as you can see where he is playing, you might recognize that. that's Heinz Field. That's the same place where the Steelers play, which drafted him. Look, he has some limitations. So did all the quarterbacks in this year's draft. But if anyone was going to know what his limitations are, it would be the Steelers. They're a pretty well-run organization.
Starting point is 00:37:13 Six Lombardy's there have had three coaches in their entire history. And Mike Tomlin is a Hall of Famer. So I don't know what he's going to be. That's why he's in unknown. All right. Which tier would you place Davis Mills in? Davis Mills. Davis Mills had 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Starting point is 00:37:28 88.8 pass the rating and 11 starts in his rookie season. He's such, he's an interesting player. An interesting player,
Starting point is 00:37:36 but he led all rookies with four games with 300 plus passing yards last season. He did deal with the Deshawn Watson drama and the Tyrod Taylor
Starting point is 00:37:45 rotation of quarterbacks. I think he's a bridge guy, though. I think we've seen enough of Davis Mills that he's not going to be that high level starter or superstar,
Starting point is 00:37:54 but he is capable on putting him in the bridge. All right, what tier would you place Matt Ryan in. Maddie Ice leads the NFL and passing guards over the last six seasons. Surprisingly, that's a pretty interesting stat. He's at 13 straight seasons with 20 plus passing touchdowns.
Starting point is 00:38:11 He's tied with Brady for the longest active streak. Brady's a pretty good player. And he'll have a much improved offensive line. He will have a lot of different more interesting weapons with the Colts. The Colts kind of feel like they're right there. The Falcons did not. I think he's a starter. I think Matt still has some stuff, some juice in there.
Starting point is 00:38:31 And he's got a little chip on his shoulder now that he's with a new team. And they want to win now. So I'm going to put Matt Ryan as a starter. What tier would you place Trevor Lawrence? Trevor Lawrence. I am giving him a complete pass on this rookie season. I do think he has the potential to be a superstar. They spent a ton of money in free agency as a new head coach now after dealing with a disaster
Starting point is 00:38:49 last year with Urban Meyer. I am going with unknown, though. We don't know what he is yet. That's fair. Which tier would you place Ryan Tanna Hill in? Ryan Tannenhill is weird. Three straight winning seasons, three playoff appearances, back-to-back
Starting point is 00:39:02 AFC South titles, but blew it in the playoffs as the number one seed. Three interceptions in the divisional round. I think he's a bridge. They drafted Malik Wilson in the third round. I think they're looking towards the future when it comes to the Titans. Interesting. Which tier would you place Russell Wilson in? I mean, Russell Wilson
Starting point is 00:39:18 he's a superstar. Most wins by any quarterback through his first 10 seasons in NFL history and now with a new team. We'll finish it out. Patrick Mahomes superstar Derek Carr's superstar Justin Herbert's superstar. Oh, you ended on superstars. All superstars. Look, the AFC is loaded.
Starting point is 00:39:34 It is just going to be a packed, packed place, the AFC. A lot of superstars in the AFC. Fun show today, myself and Alex Curry. We will be back tomorrow in for Colin Coward on the herd. Thanks for joining us. We'll be here tomorrow. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite.
Starting point is 00:39:52 Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob. Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:40:11 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Starting point is 00:41:27 84 was big to me. I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year.
Starting point is 00:41:44 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to Look Back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed human.
