at NFL network. So this isn't some like random person trying to make a name for himself and go viral. 60 mil is insanity. Okay. I like Dak Prescott. I did float on this show. I would sooner move off of Micah Parsons and C.D. Lamb and keep DAC and rework things. There really is no right answer here because Dallas keeps screwing up with Jack Prescott. As we saw with the Jaguars, pay your quarterback early before it gets dicey. Dallas has continually messed things up with Dak Prescott, and now they're up against it. If they want to move on, I believe the dead cap number is 40 mil. It'll be tough to win and build a title contender with the dead cap hit. So you've got to keep Dak, but now he's got you kind of bent over a barrel and you got to pay him 60 mil a year?

That's crazy talk. Now, as I said at the open of the show, like, listen, there's a world where people online can say, hey, look at the last 50 starts. Dak Prescott versus Patrick Mahomes. Like, this is a thing. This is a thing that another network did. I'm not going to call them out. But everybody wants to go viral right now, right? You get these easily digestible charts,

quarterback blind resumes for social media. And you look at it, it's like last 50 starts, Dak and Patrick Wilhomes, they're the same guy. This is it. Our staff got it. Look at how crazy we've gotten as a football society. This is not made up. if you cherry pick a few stats, oh my, wait,

DAC and Patrick, well, they're not that different? We'll pay DAC. And this is making America dumber. This is what we're doing. A lot of people, and again, it's easy to find a few stats, go viral, and you act like you made a point. Like, I'm sorry, guys, DAC is not a $60 million quarterback, not even close to it.

I would have him go over Kyla Murray. I'd pay him a little more than that. But folks, it does not. not look good for Dak and the Cowboys going forward. Let's go to Alex Curry with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Jack holds all the cards, though, if you think about it, because he becomes a free agent at the end of the year. He doesn't have to accept a deal. And you know there's a team out there that's going to overpay Dak

and probably more than what the Cowboys are willing to pay them if they don't lock them up. There's some desperate teams out there. There's a lot of desperate teams. Cooper Russian, Trey Lance, are not the worst guys to start in the world. I mean, they're not great. But we've seen Brock Purdy's success with a stack deck. It's going to be interesting. Yeah.

It's going to be interesting. All right, well, let's stay in the NFC East. Jaden Daniels is in his first camp with the commanders since being drafted. With the second overall pick, he and Caleb Williams will draw comparisons throughout their careers. And while the Bears committed to Caleb starting week one already, Dan Quinn and the commanders are holding off on that decision for now. In true competition, that's, you know, why we set it up as we did to have Marcus have some and Jaden to have some. So, no, no great declarations other than, like, being true to who we are, you know, as competitors.

There's no doubt that Jaden is making unbelievable progress here, and we'll have a really fun camp. But he's earned that opportunity to go compete. We wouldn't have given him those spaces and those times and those reps if he hadn't. but it was really clear that he's put in the work and he was ready to do that. So it was by intention for sure that he was able to do that. Commander fans need to be excited

because the future is bright in Washington. Sure. Jade and Daniels, they got him number two overall, right? There's no rush for this situation right now. As you said, they have, you would just heard Dan Quinn say, they have Marcus Marriota in there. They're going to make it a competition. But this also doesn't mean he's not going to start week one.

They're just not putting that pressure on Jada. Daniels right out of the gates, like we saw the Bears declare that Caleb Williams is already going to be their starter, week one. And did you see how he's getting picked apart in practice? Yeah. In OTAs, he's struggling a bit. It's like, you guys, it's not going to be easy for anybody transitioning from college to the pros right out of the gates. It's going to take some time. And I think by saying this, it gives him a little bit of a buffer to really figure it out and not have the pressure of the world and of the entire franchise on his back that he needs to figure it out and be perfect right away.

But you also have to remember he has Cliff Kingsbury who just spent a time with Caleb Williams as his offensive coordinator at USC. He is now his offensive coordinator. So he's going to have an offense that is tailored to him that is going to work for him. And those are the things you have to focus on. I like your optimism. I mean, Alex is very positive about a lot of stuff. I just looked at the Washington quarterback depth chart.

So, Jadenials versus Marcus Marietta for the starting job. After that, Jeff Driscoll and how about my guy from Notre Dame, Sam Hartman, pulling up the rear. I saw him in the video. If you look, the guy with the longish hair, you'll see. I'm just telling you, that guy can sling it. He was my pick to be a Brock Purdy type player. I don't know if it happens in Washington. Washington fans desperately.

But you think he might be competition for Jade Daniels? Listen, Dan Quinn, Mr. Backwards Hat guy. Did you notice that? You and Colin with the backwards hat. I don't care about the backwards hat. That's a coward thing. It doesn't bother me. I don't wear my hat backwards, usually.

Sometimes I'll do backwards into the side a little bit if I really want to be, you know, like a arrogant jerk. That's very rare. But I do think that it's not much of a competition. He's just saying this. Hey, Jay, you got to earn it. So you're calling. He's going to be starter week one. Okay.

But then again, saying things like this, get them. media who build these stories and create these unnecessary issues like we saw with Caleb Williams, like, oh, he's not, you know, he's not connecting in practice, he's not finding his spots, like he's struggling. It's like, you guys, I've been in pads yet. They're literally in shorts, like, walking through plays right now, just getting a feel of the playbook and like your new teammates and what the game is going to feel like with this new system. I can't think of a time, Alex were during the NFL season. We were like, do you remember a June at camp

without pads? Struggling. That's like never, I don't think that's ever happened. No, but I do like what Dan Quinn is doing here because, again, he's giving Jade and Daniels a little bit of a buffer to figure it out. So if he does struggle, okay. Maybe he's not going to be our week one starter. We'll give him some time and wait until he's ready.

It kind of ease him into it. But if he crushes, yeah, of course he's going to be starting. The bullets to start firing in real life before we say, oh, there's a quarterback competition, yeah. Exactly. All right, let's switch to the NBA, where Wembe is coming off an impressive first season, unanimously winning rookie of the year, becoming the first rookie to land the all-defensive first team and finishing second in defensive player of the year voting. The Spurs will look to add some more star power around Wembe, and an anonymous NBA veteran believes that players will take pay cuts to join him. Now, this is something I've talked about

a lot. This is a choice that every athlete has. right? Because there's no wrong answer, whichever route you choose as an athlete, because you don't have a super long time to make your money, right? So a lot of players can either go for the bag and just take all the money you can and then you're most likely not going to be on a championship winning team because you're not going to have that other money to get other players. Or you take pay cuts and you go play with a unicorn player. like Wembe and a legendary coach like Popovich, and you go and you try to be that dynasty, legacy, whatever you want to do. You can go for the money, or you can try to go for the championships, and you take a little bit of a pay cut

because if we want to get a group together that can actually go forward and win it, you're going to have to spread the money around a little bit. I've never liked the Spurs. No, I'd no dislike, just indifferent. But I love Wemby. and I saw something that I said to one of our guys here and he's like, oh, we'll get it in.

Okay. Do we have it? Do we have it? What are you talking about? Oh, Lemby shopping. In his Spurs gear, that's risky. That's like... You notice that San Antonio prices in the background, $4.97 on sale, probably like a TV dinner or something.

So Wembeinyama goes shopping. Yeah. And as if you couldn't tell, there's a 7-foot-9 guy walking around. Wemby's wearing his Spurs T-shirt. I love it. I love it. Hey, it's not my doppelganger. He's a walking billboard. Yeah.

So look at the lady with the phone. And this is similar to Messi. Oh, taking the photo? Messi went to Miami. Yeah. To play for the MLS team. Oh, yeah. He's going to get stopped everywhere he goes.

And now he had a bodyguard, but like Messi's shopping at the grocery store, people like, oh my gosh, it's messy. But Messi's like, did you see Messi's bodyguard just? Oh, sprint on the field. Oh, my gosh. To tackle a guy like crossfield the other day? Yeah, yeah. He's worth like half a billion dollars.

But here, here, somebody made the joke that Wenyama is shopping for his running mate, his wingman. Probably not. What kind of grocery store is this? Is it sort of, look at that. That's not even like a nice grocery store? GMX, we live in California. It's way different out here. Are you a lazy acres?

I am a lazy acres. I love, not as much as Airwan. I went to Airwold. I went to Airwant yesterday. Overpriced? Well, it's like a, it's like a, it's like a, it's like a, cult scene. Ballet parking.

Everyone taking like Instagram, like TikTok videos outside with their cups. It was like a whole, it was like a, whoa. I just walked into a influencer situation here. By the way, I've never seen a photo of Tom Brady walking through a grocery store.

People are like, oh my gosh, it's Tom. I'm sure he has his own personal chef. Yeah, he doesn't walk. He definitely has a chef. Step it up, dude. Get your own person. No, he's a man of the people. I love this.

He's still going out and he's still getting his groceries. There's some. something like really pure and awesome about that. But there was also some rumors, because who do you think the spurs will add around Wembe? Because there were some rumors maybe Trey Young was kind of floating around there. No? Don't know if I love that. Well, unfortunately, we have a couple weeks.

We'll be hosting again soon. We do. Because Cowherds a vacation. Yeah, yeah. So we got some time before free agency. Okay. All right. Well, sticking to the NBA, Damien Lillard joined Janus and the Bucks this offseason,

but they didn't end the season like they wanted with a first round exit to the Pacers. Now, Dame didn't look like his usual self, and Doc Rivers recently revealed the possible reason why. We were at dinner, and he said, Coach, I didn't work out all summer. It's the first time in my life that I've not worked out. I was so scared of getting injured, working out.

He knew he was going to get traded, so he said, you know, I did some light running. I did some shooting with no one in the gym, but I didn't go at all. He said, I'm out of shape. And he was honest about it. That's one of the reasons you love him. Because he is honest.

He said, this is the worst shape I've ever been in. Never a good outcome when you're not prepared for anything in life, especially when you were a professional athlete. Not great, not great. Alex Curry with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd Lie News.

All right, let's welcome. into the herd a long time NFL superstar. Darrell Moose Johnston, Fox Sports NFL analyst, and also the EV, let me get this correct, EVP of football operations for the UFO. Moose, how you doing? I'm good. How you doing? I'm excellent. Excellent. Big weekend ahead. We got the title game on Sunday on Fox. Your thoughts on the Stallions. Can they do it again? Yeah, I know. How about that? We got a little bit.

of a dynasty here going on in spring football. So are we going to get a three Pete right out of the gate in spring football? And in the first year are the UFLs. So they've played really well. I think one of the hardest things when you talk about spring football is the turnover that we have, you know, with the rosters and the fact that Skip Holtz and the general manager, Zach Potter, they've been able to get back to that championship game the first two years and win it and now they're back again for a third consecutive year with all that turnover. And I think a lot of it goes into, you know, the culture that they've built there. And there's some senior leadership that has returned and make sure that that is in place.

But they'll be playing the one team that knocked them off this season. And they did that without John Lovett and Anthony McFarland, who are back and healthy now. And when San Antonio decides to run the ball, they can run it on just about anybody. Yeah. I like how you mentioned culture. My Jets could use a little culture infusion. Let's talk about last weekend's ratings, astronomical 1.2 million viewers. on the conference semifinal, conference finals.

I mean, that's a good omen here heading into the championship. It really is, really is. Much better numbers than either league last year individually. And really kind of a tough weekend. There was some big name marquee sporting events during the course of last weekend, headed off by the Belmont there on Saturday. And I think we were number seven when you looked at the sports viewing during the course of Saturday's events. And then we were number nine on Sunday.

So it's been a really good showing for us all season when it comes to a rating standpoint. I think a couple of weeks ago, all four games during the course of that weekend, spiked at over one million viewers at one point during the broadcast, and that was the first for us this season. So, you know, the fans are really starting to tune in. I think they enjoy the, you know, the transparency that we have, the access that we grant. It's a very entertaining broadcast.

And St. Louis has really embraced the league championship game in St. Louis's weekend. And you guys are averaging 34,000 fans per game in St. Louis. Why is it such a hit there, you think? But probably a couple of reasons. I think it is a football town. And they've embraced the battlehawks right out of the gate. So you've got that factor. And then I think they want to show to the NFL that they are a football community.

And they're still a little bit upset with the Rams leaving St. Louis. So they want to show everybody out there who's a fan of the game of football that this is a community that embraces the game. It's been fantastic. What I've really liked from our legacy USFL teams is that they have to go into an environment that's very hostile. And you've got to be able to execute and perform with that crowd noise. And they're very intelligent fans as well. You're seeing a little bit of it on the screen right now.

But, I mean, really coordinated, orchestrated cheers. They understand the game of football. They know when to get loud. They know one to be quiet to help their defense out. So that's one of the things that's been great for our legacy USFL teams is to get into that hostile environment and have to execute and perform. Obviously, everybody loves watching the UFL and seeing, like, could this guy translate to the NFL?

So Monday is the first day for UFL players to sign with NFL teams. What do you kind of expect heading into a championship game Sunday and then Monday the big day? Yeah, well, we're actually had some workouts already. So trending towards the end of the week, we had 27 of our guys, you know, go to 31 workouts. Jake Bates has worked out for three teams. Liam Fornadell is worked out for three teams and offensive linemen from D.C. So it's actually Tuesday.

Tuesday we'll be able to start signing those contracts. I'm excited to see what happens. There's a number of guys there. Our coaches have talked about the quality of football all season long. They said it was very difficult getting to that final 50 because of the competition and training camp. They say the speed of the game has been much improved from the first two seasons for the USFL and the first season for the XFL.

the physicality has been there. So I think that our guys, not only getting the opportunity, but much better prepared this year because the quality of competition was really kind of bumped up with the teams going from 16 in both leagues down to eight. All right, Darrell, let's transition to the NFL. There was a report from Ian Rappaport, NFL Network, that Dak Prescott is seeking $60 million a year. Now, you've been around the league a long time.

You see and hear a lot of rumors. Which side do you think? Let's start with this. Which side do you think kind of leaked this? Was this the Cowboys putting it out there to make Dak look bad and greedy? Or is this Dak saying, listen, I'm drawing my line in the sand. This is my number. Cowboys aren't meeting it, guys, and we have an impasse.

Yeah, I'm not sure where the number came from, but exactly the conversation that you were just having about San Antonio and what you're going to do there when you've got that marquee player, how do you get other people to come in? I think that that's one of the things that happens. And I've become a big fan of that window theory when you've got that. that potential franchise quarterback on that rookie contract, you got to make your hay at that time and try to make a run into championship.

And once you get those contracts signed to the quarterback, that starts to take away from your ability to surround him with the talent. And I think that that's the biggest thing. And you talk about guys taking pay cuts to be a part of a team that might chase a championship. I think it's also interesting to see, and we saw this with Tom Brady towards the end of his career,

the desire to win a championship. He was taking pay cuts. playing for less to make sure that he had the people around him to help him be successful. So I think that that's one of the things as we talk about these quarterback salaries getting higher and higher every time one of them steps up to sign that new contract, that this is going to limit your opportunity to have that swing tackle, to have that fourth wide receiver, you know, to have the pieces in place necessary on the, on the offensive side of the ball to help that offense move. And then also on the defensive side of the ball. You just, you

erode your depth. You eliminate the opportunity to have an extended. run because they've got they've got micha parsons coming up they got cd lamb coming up you know that you've got to be forward thinking so i i don't know where the number came from but you know hopefully it it's not it's not true you know for dallas cowboy moving forward because that that's going to be tough for them you know to be able to build uh to be able to build that nucleus around deck prescott it's 60 million dollars here okay i'm a long time jets fan and i got to say the a ron roger stuff is just wearing me down but maybe you could put me at ease so you were with the cowboys for a while obviously you had Troy Aikman in there.

I'm just curious. Is this Rogers missing minicamp? I know it's mandatory. It was apparently an excused absence. They know where he is. They're just not saying. I don't know, Darrell, should we read into this? Or is this just, hey, it's June.

Let's talk about the NFL. Aaron Rogers is not there. Or is this an issue, the leader of your team, not in the locker room for mandatory minicamp? Yeah, I think just from the leadership standpoint, you know, you should have a good reason why you're not there. You know, he demonstrated a big desire to get back on the field last year, if at all possible, with that injury. And it just didn't happen.

The season didn't unfold the way that maybe provided him the opportunity. So you know the passion is there for Aaron Rogers to continue to play. And you just wonder why he's not there from a leadership standpoint and really starting to immerse himself into that offense and work with the guys around him. I know it's not as diligent as it was when I played the offseason, you know, was much more structured. There was much more time spent at the facility. You know, the OTAs that we did were a little bit more competitive. You know, our off-season programs were much more challenging. You know, that's where you prepare to get ready to make a championship run.

And it's just a different structure in today's NFL. So I think a lot of people will look at it from that standpoint where Aaron's played a lot of football. You know, whatever the reason why he's not there, it's not going to impact the team moving forward. The reduction in the time they spend together, you know, is so much more, you know, today than it was when I was there, you know, missing that guy for a couple of days probably doesn't have the impact that would have had on our team had Troy Aikman not been there for a week of OTAs because we did a lot of installs. We were growing as a team at that time.

That's a great point. I hope Jets fans are listening, an NFL veteran who knows a little about the league. Great stuff. Darrell Moose Johnson. The watches are fine. Okay. They just, you know, can't do a lot of stuff. I don't know. Let it live a little. The future is on the phone. The future is in technology. No, the future is outdoors playing and having fun.

in between matches. And my son doesn't have a phone. So what does he do? He sits there by himself or? Well, he's like, can I play a game on your phone? Can I watch? And I'm like, no, hang out, be a kid, play games, goof around. But no one else is playing with them.

I'd rather my kid got in trouble than just sat there scrolling TikTok or Instagram or whatever. Oh my God. Hey, Mac. No, honestly. Yeah, I mean, you can limit social media. but also like if everyone else is on it, does he have like an iPad? Everybody else is doing it.
