Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hard Way with your favorite therapist and host, Kear Games. This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor? It signals to the world that you're not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Listen to learn the hard way on the AHA radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes. Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of Tontons and Wampas on the ice planet, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith rule of two. Listen to stuff to blow your mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:02:06 Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Our number three here on the herd, in for Colin Cowherd. I am Jason McIntyre. You know me, folks. Been on Cowherd Show.
Starting point is 00:02:40 Geez, dating back about six years now. And finally, for the first time hosting the show, solo. I'm flying solo. A lot of fun here in the studio. A couple great producers who I've known for a while. Shopping it up. We've had some good guests. We have one more coming up in about 15.
Starting point is 00:02:59 minutes. We beat up on Tom Brady. Drop it some NFL actionable fantasy and gambling nuggets for you. And now our number three, we're going to open some not great news for the Rams. We'll talk about in a moment. But I have to start talking about the big news from the final weekend of the NFL preseason. No, I'm not talking about the mascot for the Ravens who popped his ACL over the weekend. I'm not talking about my Jets who went to.
Starting point is 00:03:29 3-0 in the pre-season. Jets on Instagram, pumping up Robert Sala in the locker room, fired up like he was a couple years ago when he was with the Niners on the sideline. Nope, the big story from preseason week three was Tom Brady. The 45-year-old. He's aging gracefully, although a lot of you guys reaching out to me on social media saying, hey, Brady, 11 days off. Looks like my man had some work done. I don't believe that to be the case, although I have not looked great. But if I were a body language expert and I did play one back when I was on the staff at Us Weekly, back in the day, this was over 15 years ago. Also, when I interviewed Brady twice. One of them, I don't know if I mentioned this guys, the first time I interviewed Brady was at a Victoria's Secret Party in New York City. I had just gotten a new roommate.
Starting point is 00:04:21 I'll tell this quickly. I hadn't prepared to tell this. and you're in New York City, so you've got to vet all these guys. I get this recruit, this new roommate who played football at Penn State. He was like a walk-on big dude. And I'm working at us weekly. They're like, hey, Jason, Tom Brady just won a Super Bowl. He's at this Victoria's Secret Party.
Starting point is 00:04:40 Do you want to go ask him what's going on? He was at the time married to an actress. And I was like, sure, yeah. So I tell my roommate who I barely knew, hey, I'm going to the Victoria's Secret Party. Do you want to come? He's like, oh, my gosh, of course. So we roll up Victoria's Secret models all over the place. And I see Brady.
Starting point is 00:04:58 Now, this was after one or two Super Bowls. This must have been like 2003 or four. And I just roll up to him, interrupt him with his friends. I'm like, hey, Tom, Jason, us. Can I get a couple questions? He's like, sure. His friends pair off. So we're talking for like three minutes.
Starting point is 00:05:14 My roommate's like five feet away. Like, oh, my gosh, Jason, this guy just won the Super Bowl. And I swear, this is not a joke. This is no embellishment. maybe three or four minutes into talking to Brady, this supermodel just rolls up and starts talking to Tom like, I don't exist. Like, I'm not even there. And Brady just like basically gives me the wave like we're done here, Jay.
Starting point is 00:05:33 And I just was like, okay, cool. And you just see the man in action. And I've always been respectful of Brady, never been a huge fan. But I saw a different Brady this weekend, guys. Listen to the man, the myth, the legend. Tom Brady at the podium after facing a cults, week three in the preseason. I'm 45 years old, man. There's a lot of shit going on.
Starting point is 00:05:54 So, you know, you just kind of try to figure out light the best you can. And, you know, it's a continuous process. I feel good. I feel good. What did it mean for you? I play football for a long time. So I'm pretty good at it. It doesn't take long for me to remember how to play it.
Starting point is 00:06:11 Sure, Tom. Sure. You know what he did after he said that curse word? Oh, a curse word at the podium. Probably went home, cooked him, up a nice cocktail. I know Cowherd likes to have an occasional cocktail, but you know what was in Brady's cocktail. It was kind of nasty. It was a little bit of a diminished offensive line. It was a dash of a weakened pass catching group and probably two sips of a coaching change. And I'm just telling you,
Starting point is 00:06:42 Tom Brady off an 11-day vacation. Maybe I shouldn't say vacation. 11-day hiatus from the team did not sound like the confident cocksure quarterback that we have watched for two decades. This sounded like kind of a beaten down man who's going through some stuff. I'm a, again, a fan of Brady. I respect him. I hope whatever he's going through is all right. But I'm just telling you, on the field, these Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they're going to have some problems early in the season. I'm not telling you to go out and bet Dallas in week one because I don't totally trust this Dallas team.
Starting point is 00:07:17 and that offensive line will struggle with the Bucks. But I can foresee some problems for Tom and the Bucks this year. And I don't want to be a negative Nancy out here hosting the herd, but I'm telling you the defending Super Bowl champs are going to have some problems. Now, I mentioned this, you know, we do the pre-show call before we take the air, you know, earlier this morning. and I tell the guys, Ryan and Greg, two guys I've known for a while,
Starting point is 00:07:53 that I can see the Rams maybe missing the playoffs. I'm not predicting no missed the playoffs. I'm saying I foresee some problems. And they were like silent for a second. Oh, oh, hot take. We like it. We like it, Jay. And I was like, in my head, I'm like, listen, guys,
Starting point is 00:08:11 I can do hot take happy hour. Okay? That is fun. This ain't hot take. Happy Hour. I saw one of the most shocking stats because I keep this note section in my phone for all sorts of like interesting nuggets that I read or hear. And this one is stunning to me. The Rams have one of the three toughest schedules in the NFL this season. And you'd have to look really hard to notice this. But the defending Super Bowl champs, if you look at the teams
Starting point is 00:08:42 that are favored to win the Super Bowl, based on the gambling odds, the Rams play the top eight. All eight favors to play the Super Bowl or win the Super Bowl. The Rams face them. And they face one of them, the 49ers, twice. That is an absolutely brutal schedule. The only reason it's not the toughest in the league is because they're very good. Now, to go along the offensive line theme that we've talked about during the show,
Starting point is 00:09:08 their left guard, Whitworth, the rock of that offensive line, he gone. He retired. Now, I know they're replaced him with No Boom, who has done well, but again, he's never been like a full year starter. He's a great backup. And I just wonder if you look at the offensive line. I know they have Allen Robinson in place of Beckham. I think that's a huge win.
Starting point is 00:09:29 You look at how the Rams are built. They are built very top heavy. Right? You talk about brands in the NFL. One of my favorite things Cowher does is brands for teams. I don't know if he's done this for the NFL, but like you look at the Pittsburgh Steelers. Their brand is defense.
Starting point is 00:09:46 We are in a blue collar city. We're going to win in the trenches. We're going to push you around with T.J. Watt and Company. We're going to hit hard. It's going to be you go into Pittsburgh. It's a body bag game. Pittsburgh's brand is toughness. Right?
Starting point is 00:10:00 You look at the Rams. Their brand that they're building, that they're cultivating under Sean McVeigh, which I love is we are star-driven. Fits well, right? Being in the city of Hollywood and L.A. and crowbar in your way into the stratosphere in Los Angeles is tough. So what do you do?
Starting point is 00:10:17 We are going to go with heavy on their stars, and then we'll just fill in the gaps with new guys. Go look at who cornerback two is opposite Jalen Ramsey. Go take a look. Tell me if you've heard of them. Tell me if you're familiar with this work. Listen, it worked last year. Now, Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey, Matt Stafford.
Starting point is 00:10:35 Like, 60% of this roster is very interchangeable. Remember, they had a great team. two years ago, and then they just lost a bunch of guys to free agency. Hey, we can afford to lose two safeties. We've got Jalen Ramsey. We've got Aaron Donald. You know, there are some holes on this team, and there is not a lot of room for error if somebody were to go down with an injury.
Starting point is 00:10:56 Now, you look at the health for McVeigh's teams, and for whatever reason, they are always healthy. They are one of the healthiest teams in the league the last three years, which is great news, right? As long as you're healthy. Now, I know some people will say, but Cam Acres, Jay, Robert Woods went down. I'm aware. There's a couple.
Starting point is 00:11:13 By and large, they have been healthy under McVeigh. Now, I know McVeigh doesn't play any guys in the preseason. Stafford has this elbow issue. I like the Rams brand. I like what they're building. I can't get past this schedule. I can't. And I think the bills are going to beat him in the opener.
Starting point is 00:11:30 And yes, I know McVeigh, 5-0 against the spread, 5-0 straight up in career season opening games. He's very good. They'll beat the Falcons. They'll beat the Falcons of the Falcons in week two. Arizona, San Fran Dallas after that, that ain't easy. It will not be easy. And then you start getting into the meat of the schedule.
Starting point is 00:11:49 You're like, damn, they come out of the by week, the early by, which is not great. They come out of the buy. They got San Francisco, Tom Brady, Arizona again, at New Orleans, at Kansas City. They've got to go to Aaron Rogers in December. They've got to go to the Chargers. I'm sorry, not to the Chargers. Chargers are a home game. But in between, I'm sorry, after Green Bay and going there, they come back for a Christmas date with Russell Wilson.
Starting point is 00:12:17 Then they stay at home to face the Chargers. I mean, you look at, who's facing tougher quarterbacks in this three game stretch than Aaron Rogers, Russell Wilson, and Justin Herbert in December and January, January 1 for the Chargers game, when everything's going to be on the line? Now, I know the NFC's down and I like the Rams, but. You know, music practically fell out, dropped the phone when I said, I think there's a scenario where the Rams missed the playoffs. Some people, I believe Coward, has the Rams in the Super Bowl again. That's insanity. Music, Rams, playoffs, Super Bowl, or missed the playoffs?
Starting point is 00:12:56 Jason, I would say that I almost called Colin on vacation and said, Colin, we've made a horrible mistake. It's 815. Is there any way we can set you up on a remote broadcast? Because Jason's going to come to the airwaves with just some torts. total lunacy that will just bring down the credibility of this show. Now, listen, I get what you're saying. I think when you look at the Rams, anything short of catastrophic injuries across the board,
Starting point is 00:13:22 which is equally as likely for just about any team in the NFL, it's not that they're just star-driven, is that they're so star-driven across the board in most key positions. Losing just one of them won't topple their season. I mean, you look at last year, they had almost just as tough as a schedule last year with the teams that they played. And it almost prepared them for the trials that you have to go through in the postseason. So sure, if they lose a Jalen Ramsey, that would very much hurt their defense. And maybe it would take them out of the Super Bowl. But unless you lose a Jalen Ramsey and Aaron Donald and a Cooper Cup,
Starting point is 00:14:01 I just don't see them as the type of team that would be like, oh, wow, somehow they only won nine games. year because it just didn't really work out. Now, there's a reason why, you know, since the 0203 or 0304 Patriots are the only ones who have ever won back-to-back Super Bowls, so I can understand why you'd have your hesitation about them being back-to-back Super Bowl champs. But simply making the playoffs considering there are multiple wild cards up for grabs, I think it's a stretch. Okay.
Starting point is 00:14:28 Listen, I'm not betting against the Rams to miss the playoffs. I just think there is a scenario that's not unbelievably bad where they missed the playoffs. You look at those linebackers. I know people are already probably sending me messages. Bobby Wagner, Bobby Wagner. Folks, there's a reason there wasn't like a robust market for Bobby Wagner. I like McVeigh a lot. I read a great story on him by Seth Wickersham recently about his work ethic.
Starting point is 00:14:51 And I'm all in on McVeigh. The dude is really likable. I like Stafford a lot. Cooper Cup is like my favorite receiver. I was at Rams Niners, the NFT Conference Championship game. I've never heard a stadium louder than. so-fi. It was a crucial third down driving for the go-ahead score. And I told my kids, you know, yelling at them two feet away from me. Cooper Cup, watch Cooper Cup. And Cooper Cup put a move on the
Starting point is 00:15:18 cornerback on the slant, broke two tackles. And it was deafening. I'll remember it forever. And what was really funny was this 49ers fan. There were some like rowdy, drunk 49ers fans. And they are, I mean, I took my, he was 11 years old. I took him in the bathroom. I was like, listen, earmuffs this, just, and there's just obscenities, like real vile stuff getting yelled by these drunk Niners fans. And, like, one of the 49ers fans was so devastated after the Cooper Cup play. He just walks up the stairs, puts his hands on his head, falls down like five stairs, and like onto the, behind us.
Starting point is 00:15:52 My kids are like, oh, my God, this guy dead. He just pops up, he was fine. But it was just like, I like the Rams. They're easy to root for, and I'm not rooting for them to miss the playoffs. And I know this is doom and gloom to say, oh, come on, Rams could miss the playoffs. Guys, they were 7 and 4 at one point last year. They also won their final three playoff games by a field goal apiece. They were not a dominant team like we've seen in the past with some others.
Starting point is 00:16:14 Other Super Bowl champions. All right, coming up next here on The Herd, Jason McIntyre, in for Colin Cowherd. We got an NBA reporter coming in to talk a little Lakers. That's next. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeard Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
Starting point is 00:16:38 It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the Eye Harder.
Starting point is 00:16:59 Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Clivert Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined.

Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:18:28 including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 was big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now, so... Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Starting point is 00:18:52 Yes, I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years. for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host,
Starting point is 00:19:10 and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing
Starting point is 00:19:31 and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch life becomes about wins and losses Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.
Starting point is 00:19:53 Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the hard way and listen now. Back here on the herd, Jason McIntyre in for Colin Cowherd. Before we get to our guest, I just want to remind people, the Cowboys just announced what their expected starting line is on the offense
Starting point is 00:20:20 versus the Tampa Bay Bucks in week one. They're going to start rookie Tyler Smith at left tackle. Rookie Tyler Smith. against Tampa Bay. Good luck with that, Dak Prescott. All right, joining the herd now. We've got a great guest coming in. L.A. Times NBA reporter, Dan Woyke. Dan, how you doing, man? Hey, Jason. How are you? I'm excellent. Thanks for joining the show today.
Starting point is 00:20:40 I told the producers, I got a curveball for you to open up. The first question, everybody's talking about, oh, hey, Lakers, man, they got another point guard. We're in great shape. All this going on. Dan, I'm looking at the Lakers roster, and I am asking you, give me the names of their small forwards in what has become a largely wing league, right? Three and D. Who do you have on the wing? You can defend like the Jason Tatums of the world. Michael Porter Jr., Kawhi Leonard.
Starting point is 00:21:07 Who are their wings? And maybe you start with LeBron, who either is the point guard of the wing. Yeah, I mean, I think that's probably where it starts from like a sort of defining standpoint. And then also you have Anthony Davis, who's a pretty versatile defender too. but you're right it is a big hole in this team the guy that's probably closest
Starting point is 00:21:30 to being what you would consider like a traditional wing is Troy Brown and yeah you know Juan Tiscano Anderson maybe a little bit and then what you just start doing in this was an issue
Starting point is 00:21:46 they had last year is like then you start like kind of overcasting right like well we know Austin Reeves is like a tough player, right? And you saw him really try to get his nose dirty guarding, you know, twos in the league. And if he could do it against the guy that's four, what about, like, maybe he'll try against
Starting point is 00:22:02 the guy's six. Oh my God. You know, like, maybe Lonnie Walker's athletic enough. Like, you start to talk yourself into this stuff. Like, yeah, I mean, this is a team that's missing sort of, you know, I mean, they had him last year. This isn't a great example because he wasn't very good for him last year. Like, they're missing Trevor a reason.
Starting point is 00:22:19 Yes. Right? Like, they're missing some version. of like, you know, a 28 to 31 year old guy who can, you know, spread his arms wide and defend on the wing and then step in and hit, you know, open shots. The trouble is, is like, this is something that everybody wants. Yeah. You know, this is something that everybody looks for. And generally speaking, something that people pay a premium for.
Starting point is 00:22:46 And the Lakers, because of their roster construction, because of the way that they have, um, you know, prioritize max players. Like, they don't have flexibility. And that's so you start, you gamble on Troy Brown. You know, and look, Troy Brown might have a good year, right, Jason? Like, there's some things to like shot it pretty well last year in limited usage in Chicago. It was a great defensive player at Oregon in the Pack 12. But the rub is, even if he is good, let's say he is like Malik Monk good for them.
Starting point is 00:23:17 Oh, my gosh. They can't sign him. They can't resign him. Like, they don't have his bird rights. he will then enter free agency you know free to get whatever and the Lakers will have to dip in the cap space to keep them so it's a tough
Starting point is 00:23:30 it is a tough hole in the roster and I think as they continue to sort of look at options you know with what to do sort of next because I think everybody kind of agrees that there will be some version of a next or at least they'd like they need there to be another version of a next you start like okay well where can we find one of those guys
Starting point is 00:23:49 I mean he was drafted you're right out of Oregon with some promise, barely lasted in Washington, Chicago. Like, again, I know people are going to be like, who cares about the wing? Like, the wing is heavy in this league. Like, they had Carmelo Anthony playing on the wing. Dan, how many nights did he get cooked badly? Like, they can't guard Luca Donchich, and LeBron can't do it at 38. Well, especially couldn't do it last year when he needed to do as much on offense, right?
Starting point is 00:24:14 So, like, that's sort of the issue. Now, I mean, this sounds kind of ludicrous, but this is, like, where Patrick Beverly does help. some. You can guard these players with smaller players. It's not ideal. You don't want to do it all the time, but it is kind of a curve over. You're right. What if you have Dallas in the playoff series? Who's going to guard Devin Booker if you're playing Phoenix?
Starting point is 00:24:35 Lonnie Walker, maybe? Yeah, I mean, that's, if it works out, you know, if everything goes to projection, like it'll be one of those younger athletic cats if you sawson Reeves, who knows. Or maybe it's Player X who is on another team right now. I mean, I will say that like when you hear a lot about these sort of
Starting point is 00:24:54 kind of Lakeer trade permutations, I'm sure we'll get into that. Yep. You don't hear though, like there isn't like some Tony Allen type dude out there that's like a part of any of these bags. Right. They're just like it doesn't really feel that way. It feels like it'll be more around shooting, which will then kind of, you'll have to do it on a team defensive way.
Starting point is 00:25:16 And it's not impossible. It's, you know, I mean, Catevis Caldwell Pope, Danny Green are good defenders. Yeah. they weren't, they're not Tony Allen type defenders, and the Lakers had the best defensive league and won a title with those guys. Yeah. Kuzma,
Starting point is 00:25:28 was their wing then, right? He was pretty good. He came off the bench, yeah. And Kyle got better defensively, but it was nobody would have ever mistaken Kyle Kuzza. Early in the Frank Vogel era as like a viable defensive wing. Like that, he worked into that. But even still, like, Kyle Kuzma,
Starting point is 00:25:45 even if he was having a bad defensive day, it was still six-nine. Yeah. And long. So all this leads. to the potential rumors of a Westbrook deal, right? And Buddy Heald is not a wing. He's more of a shooting
Starting point is 00:25:57 guard, and I don't know about his defense. Miles Turner, very good interior defender, but you look at this Utah alleged discussion, and maybe Bogdanovich is this missing wing. He's what, 6'9, again, he's not a fleet of foot, but...
Starting point is 00:26:12 And he's not really a defender, Jason. Correct. I mean, he, like, fits at least sort of the like the prototypical mold when it comes to size, you know? Like, and it's weird. Like, you would love to have a guy who doesn't on both ends the ball, but like those guys...
Starting point is 00:26:30 They're tough to find. They're not available, right? Like, they're just not. At least certainly not for what the Lakers are going to be trading here. So you start to find guys that can maybe do, you know, a couple different things. Like, you know, I look at Bogdanovich and I see a much more offensive amount of player, a great shooter. An underrated, create off the dribble player, too, like a good,
Starting point is 00:26:50 just a good offensive basketball player with some toughness and again good size. And I think, you know, that makes sense for this team. I mean, quite frankly, a lot of stuff makes sense for this team. It's funny. And I think, and I mean, again, that's sort of where they're at today. Is they still, you know, I think they make more sense today with Patrick Beverly than they did with Taylor and Horton Tucker, at least in the short term. It certainly makes more sense because Tailin Horton Tucker is sort of a wing,
Starting point is 00:27:20 but not in that traditional sense really at all. So, yeah, I mean, one of the guys they traded away was Stanley Johnson in that trade. Yeah, that would be one of those guys for them. There's your wing, you know, perfect wing guy. Now, Dan, I got to ask, I know some Lakers fans who were, A, outraged at Patrick Beverly. Like, I hate that guy. He's a jerk. He's a heel.
Starting point is 00:27:39 I want nothing to do with him. He's been like a Naker nemenesis for years, especially when he was with the Clippers. And then they upstage out by, gosh, his Lakers team stinks. I can't remember a time that a LeBron-led team was this disrespected. The Clippers are perceived as way better. The Warriors, obviously, defending champs are way better. The Lakers, they're not even the third-best team in the West. I mean, there's still Phoenix.
Starting point is 00:28:02 You could argue Denver. Hell, Dallas. I mean, keep going, yeah. So it's weird. Are we almost to the point we're undervaluing a LeBron-led Lakers team? Or is this just the reality? They just ain't that good. I mean, they were the 11th last year in the Western Conference.
Starting point is 00:28:18 you know, and I think they were 11th for a lot of reasons. Injuries were a part of them, but they weren't the only reasons. And that team's sort of inflexibility has been passed down to this teams. You know, they've gone about things very differently this summer. They aren't, you know, they're not looking at veterans. They're not looking at guys that are going to be, I mean, this is not a team that is going to put five Hall of Namers on the court at the same time like they did last year potentially, depending on what you think of Rajan Rondo's. sort of bona fides as a Hall of Famer. That's not going to be this team, you know,
Starting point is 00:28:54 but they're going to be younger, they'll be faster, and we'll see if that means better. It doesn't always. You know, but they seem like they've adjusted in that way, but, you know, at the end of the day, I mean, it's still going to come down to what happens with Russell Westbroke, either as a player in a Laker uniform, you know, finding his way or as a piece that the Lakers have to add value.
Starting point is 00:29:18 you to bring back and kind of almost undo. It's like the Control Z on the Westbrook deal, where you send him out for, you know, three role players, like kind of what they did when they acquired. Yeah, all right. We can wrap up with this one, Dan. More of a savior, as you hear to the Lakers from delusional Laker fans. Is it Kendrick Nunn, who did not play at all last year?
Starting point is 00:29:41 Or is it Cold Swindler? Or should I toss in Scotty Pippin Jr.? Who is saving the Lakers this year? I mean, it's funny you mentioned. in some of those names. Like there, there, there is sort of like, you know, this notion. And I will say, like, Jason, it does speak to the fact that the Lakers have, like, done really well, like, guys that they've drafted or signed that you can be like, well, you know, Scotty Heaven Jr. is going to give us some really good defensive garden.
Starting point is 00:30:04 It's like, no, like two-way players don't do this as a general rule, right? Like, normally they kind of, you know, they'll be playing for the South Bay Lakers and Maynand Beach and maybe have a nice year. And then, you know, hopefully you convert him to a full-time deal next year and he competes for a spot in camp. It's like, that's normally the pathway, right? The Lakers have because they've been so picked strapped have turned that on its head a little bit. I think you look at
Starting point is 00:30:28 what Austin Reef did last year and say, okay, like, give us that from everybody. Kendrick Nunn is interesting because it is sort of like, people forget he's on the team. They got three point cards, right? They got three right now. I mean, and that's sort of the issue, right?
Starting point is 00:30:43 It's sort of like, okay, you have these guys, like you said, you're always looking for winglick. There's a team that is very stack full of guards. It is a guard market. Like when you talk about a lot of these sort of, you know, kind of trade machine deals, like it usually has one, if not two guards coming back to the Lakers in the situation. So there's a good team that's going to be small in that sense, and they're going to have to figure out a way to overcome that. But yeah, it's funny. I mean, I just think it's, in one hand, it's a sign of respect for those other guys, but it's also speaks to kind of the problem that the Lakers are in in the front office situation where
Starting point is 00:31:15 you need to look to your two-way players to say, like, we need you to fill in this gap. Yeah, all right. Dan, Woyke, L.A. Times. Keep up the good stuff, Dan. Thanks for taking the time this morning. All right, thanks, Jason. Have a good week. All right. Dan, trying to put some optimism on the Lakers. It's tough right now. All right, music, let's get to the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Well, Jason, I've tried to be the optimistic one here this morning. You've been a bit of the pessimist. you know, a bit of a little negativity coming from the other side of the glass over there
Starting point is 00:31:50 and the host chair. But I do have a bit of unfortunate breaking news coming out of L.A. and Major League Baseball, that's right, yeah. Despite the fact that Dodgers are a ridiculous 50 games over 500 right now. Another hit to their pitching staff. Their ace, Tony Gonsolin, has been placed on the 15-day IL with a right forearm strain. Now, this is in addition to who was supposed to be their top ace coming into the season, Walker Bueller. He battled injuries for most of the season and has been ruled out for the remainder of the year after getting Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career. Clayton Kershaw is potentially returning this upcoming weekend in their series against the Mets.
Starting point is 00:32:32 That's according to their manager, Dave Roberts. However, Kershaw is in year 15. He's had injuries earlier this year. He spent time on the injured list back in May, and he recently last pitched on August 4th, so he'll be coming off about a month dealing with this latest injury. On the positive side of this, they do still have Tyler Anderson, who's having a career year, 13 and 2, 269 ERA. He was an all-star for the first time.
Starting point is 00:32:59 And in other good news, Mookie Betts, who had injuries earlier in the season, has been red hot in August, hitting 333, eight home runs, 17 RBI just in the month of August. So not good for the Dodgers. Obviously, coming into the year, considered some of the World Series favorites. They've been winning games all year despite injuries all across the board, whether it's been pitchers, whether, like I said earlier,
Starting point is 00:33:20 Mookie Betts had injuries early in the year. But this latest hit to the rotation, hopefully it's only 15-day IL right now for Tony Gonsolin, so they still have time to get them some rest, maybe get them right before the playoffs. But that would be a big, big hit to their rotation, considering they already lost Walker Bueller. Big week for the Dodgers, right?
Starting point is 00:33:37 They got the Mets for three and then the Padres. I know you're down on the Padres. I think they'll be all right. You say I'm down on the Padres like that's a personal opinion. That's just a fact. They have not necessarily been good since winning the trade deadline by getting Juan Soto, which is great. Juan Soto is a fantastic player.
Starting point is 00:33:53 But they traded for Josh Hater and I think I heard, I either heard or read. I can't remember exactly where it came from. But he has something like a 25 ERA and like six appearances for the Padres. So that's not like me trying to pull up some deep saber metrics to try and convince you some team is bad when they're in fact good. Those are just indisputable at that point. Fair enough. Okay. All right.
Starting point is 00:34:16 We will turn our attention back to the NFL for these final two stories, Jason. Well, when the commanders, the Washington commanders, kick off their season hosting the Jaguars in week one, it will be Carson's third team in three years. Some people, and I'm looking at you right now, Jason, some people have their doubts about Wentz now, and you could even call some of them haters. But once is trying to tune out all those haters. he was asked about how the preseason went and how they feel going into the regular season. Quote, obviously we've put some good, we've put some bad, put some ugly out on tape. It's not been perfect, but I like where we're at. That's the mindset.
Starting point is 00:34:51 It's definitely not perfect. We're building and growing as a team every step of the way. But I really like where we're at, and I'm optimistic. So you may be down on Washington, but Carson Wentz isn't. I just, I don't understand the optimism. Carson Wentz is on his third team in three years, right? That is correct. He got kicked to the curb by the Eagles.
Starting point is 00:35:13 He wouldn't listen. He fought with Doug Peterson. The Colts were so sick of him. They got rid of him because he choked in the final game of the season. It caused him in the playoffs. And now Washington's optimistic all of a sudden? What am I missing here? By the way, Chase Young, their best defensive player, starting on the Pupplist.
Starting point is 00:35:30 I think he's out for the first four games. Yes, that is certainly not great for... And they're running back, Antonio Gibson, who was really... good last year is on special teams now. He's like third, I don't know what the hell's going on there. And the guy that should have been there starting running back, who I told my brother to draft in fantasy, Robinson just got shot yesterday. And it sounds like, yeah, he was getting a carjacked or something.
Starting point is 00:35:52 It sounds like he's maybe we'll play later in the season. So this is just, I don't want to say they're cursed, but this Daniel Snyder black cloud hovering over the team. Look, there's certainly reasons to be cautious about how, good Washington could potentially be in the short term of this upcoming season. I'm not sitting here trying to be some big Carson Wentz defender, but I think if you look at what they've been able to accomplish the past couple seasons and what they had at quarterback, it's almost undeniable that they've at least upgraded somewhat at the position.
Starting point is 00:36:25 Now, I don't think there are going to be some NFC powerhouse. No. Just, you know, competing with the likes of the Rams, the buccaneers for the division. but I think in a big picture sense, they clearly upgraded in that regard. Okay. And we'll finish up with the Steelers. One of the last remaining quarterback battles, if you will,
Starting point is 00:36:47 although I don't know if it's going to end up being much of a battle. As they wrap things up over the weekend, an impressive showing for their veteran quarterback, Metro Trubisky, who went 15 for 19 with a touchdown against the lines, essentially locking up that starting position in week one of the regular season. Over first round draft pick, Kenny Pickett, who was impressive throughout the preseason. When talking about the preseason and where he feels heading into the regular season, Trubisky said this at the conclusion. I think I've just shown I can run this offense.
Starting point is 00:37:16 I could lead this offense and I have what it takes to help this team win games. Some confidence from Mitchell. Maserati Mitch or is he Mazda Mitch? I think it's money Mitch. Oh, how many passes did Mitchell Trubisky throw last season? over under 50. Over under 50. That's for sure under. Yes, yes.
Starting point is 00:37:36 Yeah, not even close. He was basically the caddy for Josh Allen. Like, hey, Josh, hey, good job, buddy. But he was in the playoffs two years ago. Remember with the Bears? That's true. Yeah, again, they lost to the Saints, I think. Correct.
Starting point is 00:37:47 I just, I don't see it. I think by like week four he'll be out and Kenny Pickett will be in. Yeah, I'm with you. I struggle to see why the Steelers don't just go with Kenny Pickett. I understand if you wanted to start with Mitch in the preseason and you bring Kenny Pickett in the positions that you brought him in, you know, in the second half, not as the starter. And if Pickett struggled, then I totally get why you would continue moving forward
Starting point is 00:38:16 with like, okay, we're going to go with the veteran Mitch, you know, see Kenny Pickett's clearly struggling to come along. But he played well. So why you're not ready to just turn the page and go to him knowing that that's what your future is going to be and why you're just delaying the inevitable, trying to make it work with Mitch Chubisky just doesn't make sense to me.
Starting point is 00:38:35 Yeah, I'm with you, man. I think the only thought is Tomlin wants to be conservative, let's not lose the game, and let's try to get T.J. Watt, who, by the way, got hurt and then final proceeding. But, like, Kenny Pickett wasn't some college superstar known for being like a gun slinger out there. I'm serious.
Starting point is 00:38:51 So I don't get where even that would be your apprehension. I think it's just rookies are a little. little more skittish. They haven't seen defenses. You know, Mitch has seen a lot. Oh, yeah. Mitch Trubisky, known for being a stoic in the pocket. Tuck and run, baby.
Starting point is 00:39:07 Yeah. Tuck and run. Come on. I just, it doesn't, I don't get it. I don't get it. I don't see, we've never seen anything from Mitch Trubisky at any point in his career that should ever give you like, hey, that guy's a proven vet who can handle the big moment.
Starting point is 00:39:22 Like, okay, I get it. Early in his career, it wasn't his fault that Cody Parky did the double doing. Oh, that cost me money, by the way. Yeah, I'm sure. did. It cost a lot of people money. But like I just I don't see it. We've never seen it from Trubisky so it doesn't make sense. And you mentioned the double doink. Nicely done music. All right.
Starting point is 00:39:37 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The third line news. We will wrap up the show with college football winners. I'm just going to give out some winners for this coming weekend. I know Greg Tooey's a big Texas guy. I don't think
Starting point is 00:39:52 I'm wagering on Texas unless he wants to offer up a high spin prediction on his guy Bijon. That's next. on The Hurt. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Hey, it's Ben. Host of The Fifth Hour with Ben Mallor. Starting point is 00:42:22 Each episode, we pick you here, unpack what? went down and tried to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now, so.
Starting point is 00:42:48 Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:43:22 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, We get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on Earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Starting point is 00:43:45 Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Starting point is 00:44:03 Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. Back here on the herd, Jason McIntyre in for Conlin Cowherd. He's getting a much needed vacation before the NFL season fires up. Music, I got a text from a Lakers fan. He's a season ticket holder after the last segment. AD is saving the Lakers. season if not Lakers or toast. I just love Lakers fans.
Starting point is 00:44:30 This guy has good seats too. I would love to go to Lakers games this season. I'll just offer that up. Look at you. So basically what we've learned on this show is you are going to be spending time trying to acquire and invite yourself to charge your games and Laker games this season.
Starting point is 00:44:50 Here's the cool thing about Lakers games. So I can get a media pass for FS1. do FS1 shows, I want to go to Lakers game. So I'll go like 90 minutes to two hours before the tip, and I'll just go court side and just watch guys warm up. And it's really awesome. Like James Harden, a foot in front of you working on all his permutations. And Steph Curry and Luca Donchit, you can hear the chatter.
Starting point is 00:45:10 And then I happen have got to know some of the, not the players, but trainers and talk to them. It just feels cool. I'm a bit of a gym rat. I'm sure you saw my. Are you there taking notes trying to replicate for your Tuesday? morning leagues? So, from Tuesday morning league. So I did win a local championship
Starting point is 00:45:28 out here in L.A., obviously. We had a former Notre Dame quarterback on our team. I thought that it was, when you walked in this morning, I was trying to see what it was. I didn't know if it was a haircut, a shirt. It's the presence of greatness. Basketball Chief Championship. It's the title. But like, you know, you're around some of these guys, and I got to know Jared Dudley a little bit. He comes
Starting point is 00:45:46 and does some FS1. Sure, yeah. And then Jared Dudley's warming up. This is like three or four years ago before a game. He just comes up to me, courts out. Jay Mack, what up? How you doing? and like the people around me are like, who's this clown? Why is Jared Dudley talking to this nobody? And I was just like, oh, good to know players. Anyways, all right, let's get to best for last music.
Starting point is 00:46:04 Is there music for it? Yes, thank you. All right. For over two hours, I've been telling you guys, I'm going to Vegas this week. I'm laying the lumber on some college football bets. I did just look. Some of these lines have moved.
Starting point is 00:46:19 For instance, if I told you without looking, Tewy, Notre Dame, is a big dog against Ohio State. How big of an underdog do you think they are? I know this because I just saw the Marcus Freeman quote about using it as motivation. Dude, I saw this at 14 and a half over the summer. I say it's 17 and a half now. That's massive.
Starting point is 00:46:39 Now, I'm not touching the Irish. I'm not touching them with Ryan Music's money. I'm sorry, I can't do it. Ohio State's loaded. I mean, listen, Ohio State's got like three potential highspin winners on offense. I like the running back. Obviously, everybody likes the quarterback. He could be the Jets QB next year.
Starting point is 00:46:54 I'm not advocating laying big money on a 17.5 point favorite, but I don't see Ohio State losing this game, but I'm also not betting on them to cover that big number. So I would walk away from that one. Now, a couple of our guests today have touched on Utah, the Utes, two and a half point favorites, favorites in Florida. A lot of people are going to see that and their head's going to spin. You can't just go into the swamp and get a W.
Starting point is 00:47:20 I think it's in the swamp. Utah minus 152 on the money line. So you've got to lay 152 bucks to win 100. I'll say this about Florida. I love their quarterback and the potentially as Anthony Richardson. He's one of these boom bus guys. He had like 100 dropbacks last year. But you can see he's like a 6-5 quarterback.
Starting point is 00:47:39 There's some Cam Newton in him. It's tough to bet against Florida, but I like Utah and Kyle winning him. I'm just saying if you want to bet Utah to win the Natty, I know it's crazy. It's going to be Ohio State or Alabama. but if you think Utah has a chance, get them before this game. Because if they go to Florida and happen to win kind of big, I think the odds will go down and you won't get as good of a number. I like Utah to win that game.
Starting point is 00:48:02 If you're looking at two dogs, Cincinnati, the Bearcats, Desmond Ritter has moved on, sauce gardeners playing with my jets now. There are seven and a half point underdogs at the Arkansas Razorbacks, Pig Sui. I think Cincinnati goes in there and has a chance to win this game outright. 7 and a half is a little disrespectful for a team that made the playoff last year. I think they can keep it close. This feels like a 3127 Arkansas.
Starting point is 00:48:30 I like Cincinnati. I'll be taking the Bearcats plus the Tuddy and the hook. And finally, Georgia defending national champions, led by Kirby Smart, 17.5 point favorites against Oregon. And folks, I'm just saying Oregon is going to surprise some people. They look good last year against Ohio State on the road. I mean, they look great in that game. I think they will pull out all the stops here. Bo Nix, not going to be daunted by this deep south environment.
Starting point is 00:49:01 Obviously a pro-Georgia crowd, probably 75-25 Georgia. I think Oregon covers the number. I'll take the hook. My prediction, Saturday afternoon, the hook is gone. I would not be surprised to see a 16 and a half. Give me the ducks, baby. Quack! Quack!
Starting point is 00:49:18 Music, how you like it? You and Schwartz. Yeah, I think I'm on the Ducks. I've been texting him about this. I have some people in Vegas who are saying that hook will absolutely be gone by game day. We'll see. I think the dumb money comes in on Georgia,
Starting point is 00:49:31 the smart big money, the influential money comes in on the Ducks. Wow. You're high on the Ducks. I am. I'm bullish on Oregon. In this spot, 17 and a half is a huge number.
Starting point is 00:49:42 It is. It is. And considering, I mean, look, I know Georgia and their recruiting is going to be top level, continuing year and year out, what Kirby Smart has done. But they just lost so much, and it's not necessarily, they didn't win the national championship last year because of their offense. And they lost a ton off of that defense. So I could see where you're coming from on that. How about this one? A guy I follow on Twitter just posted point
Starting point is 00:50:07 totals have just gone up for week one now that the preseason is over. NFL week one. The Jets point total is 18 and a half with Joe Flacko under center against the Ravens. How the hell are the Jets getting 18 and a half points? That number's at least a point off. Now, maybe they're saying Zach Wilson, who was riding a bike on the sideline. I'm sure you saw this, watching the Jets Giants game. He's looking like it's fine. Couldn't be pulled away from the TV, yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:32 But Baltimore's defense is healthy. Baltimore's going to win special teams. I don't see a world where Joe Flacco gets a Jets over 17 and a half to 18 and a half. I think you've got to hammer the under there. I mean, isn't like single digits more likely for the... It is, but maybe. there's a fluke, Lamar Jackson fumble, scoop and score, and the Jets get an easy touch-out. That's being optimistic.
Starting point is 00:50:52 Very optimistic, yeah. So I don't know. Who's your NFL team, too? Is it the Houston Texans? Yes, sadly. I don't admit that anymore, though. I'm in a dark place. No, he's on the Davis Mills campaign trail.
Starting point is 00:51:03 Give it to me. Rough. Now, Davis Mills coming out of high school was like a five-star, right? He was the number one recruit in the country coming out of Atlanta. Like a pro-style quarterback here? But he's one of those guys, Yogi Roth mentioned earlier. Like, some of these guys during COVID, they really got screwed because they didn't play. Stanford never did anything.
Starting point is 00:51:18 They were shut down, basically. So we really don't know what he is. No, we do. We watched him last. I mean, we do. You know what I mean? Yeah, so that was Stanford. Then he was in the NFL and we watched him. Whatever.
Starting point is 00:51:32 I mean, listen, he was decent in spots. Listen, I bet the Chargers in a must-win game in Houston, it killed me. It knocked me out of a survivor pool. It's weird how, like, the media loves him. So ticked on. The media loves it. And even play, like, people think he's going to have a great.
Starting point is 00:51:46 year. I don't know. A great year? Who's his best receiver? Cooks? Who's her number two receiving? Nico Collins? Oh dear. The kid from Michigan? It's going to be a long year. Yeah, yeah, from Michigan. I mean, they're all long when you guys lost Watson, but there's always the draft next year. Right? Bryce Young, come on down. I'm curious to know if they're going to end up moving Laramie Tunsell at some point. Yeah, no, that'll be interesting. I just saw Alex Leatherwood from the Raiders, apparently his trade bait.
