He's got a podcast three and out. He's a former NFL scout. We just sent him to the combine where he spent four or five days. He's back now.

Follow his stuff. Just really somebody totally dialed in. John Middlekoff now joining me as he does some time to time. So it's interesting. I see all the GMs you talk to, but coaches, it's interesting. Some go, some don't. What's your take on that as a former NFL scout? Yeah, it's not even some.

I mean, it's a lot of the Shanahan crew, right? It's Kyle, it's Sean McVeigh, it's Matt LaFleur, Robert Sala, I don't think was planning on going, and there were some articles written, and it feels like he kind of got forced into the deal. So I think this, it's pretty simple. If Tom Brady's working out and you're a quarterback, you should probably be working out. If Tiger Woods is hitting golf balls and you're trying to beat him on the golf course, you should probably be on the range. If Andy Reed is going to be at the Combine, he's a back-to-back Super Bowl champ,

he's been going to this thing for 40 years, and he told me, I talked to him for a long time. He said the value in this is not the workouts for me anymore. We get that on tape. I'm not a doctor. I don't, the medical, I have nothing to do with. I simply go for, I think the number now is, 45 interviews that when Chris Jones or Trent McDuffie or whoever we like in the draft is walking through that door, I get 15 minutes.

And it's my first interaction to meet a guy that my scouts have met throughout the fall that I have loosely watched or have an idea because Veach has given me. But I get to interact. Remember that famous video of Pete Carroll a long time ago? Another guy. He's out of the league. He'd ever miss this thing. Took off his shirt with D.K. Metcalfe.

Those interactions are big. And obviously the old school guys value them and the new school guys are in Cabo having a cocktail. Yeah. So your overview of the combine, you hear the whispers, guys are going out, they're having beers, they're having stakes, they're talking, people loosen up a little bit. What is the overview of the draft,

especially in the first couple rounds about the talent, what's good, what's not, what's under and overvalued? Yeah, I think obviously the wide receiver class is very, very highly thought of. I think these quarterbacks are very intriguing. You know, it reminds me a little bit. And again, there's a difference between the hype and the prospects coming into a draft and then how we view it.

Remember once upon a time that Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields' draft, Amack Jones was viewed. All those guys got drafted high, but now we've got to laugh at it. But it was viewed as a really good quarterback draft. This quarterback draft obviously is much more, there's much more substance behind it because all these guys have played in Power 5 for a long time starters. But there are a lot of opinions out there.

I mean, I was out having some cocktails with a bunch of scouts that do these regions, a guy that did the South. And it's just you can't argue that Jane Daniels is really, really talented. But would you feel really good about taking him number two overall? And that was, you know, one thing you hear down there is the buzz about Washington, potentially taking him to overall. Cliff Kingsbury, more of a spread offense. you know, Drake May is a very, very intriguing prospect, though when you watch him, and I did a couple of games, I don't really see it, but then this is what we talk about.

When you meet him for the first time, the size, part of the draft, too, is projecting, right? So can I improve on the flaws that he had as an offensive coach, as a head coach, as an organization? And I think everyone, you know, views Caleb as the 100% lock at number one, and obviously the domino of Justin Fields. I think a lot of people think Atlanta, but right now and over the course of this week, there are a lot of secret meetings going on in hotel rooms. And until something is official, everyone's in the mix. And obviously there are a ton of teams that need quarterback. So to me, Justin Fields, there are going to be a lot of teams sniffing around.

I think it's all about the value, right? How much is he going to actually get traded for? So the Giants are a fascinating team, John, because they need perimeter weapons. but if Drake May falls and many are every draft, we get a star that falls. We've seen Marino, Aaron Rogers. I'm not saying Drake Mays that, but there's a lot of talk about his inconsistency, and there's a lot of J.J. McCarthy fans. So let's say Drake May falls a little, five spots.

I, Mike Garifoldo NFL Network says he believes the Giants will take a quarterback and then sit him behind Daniel Jones. And I made the argument earlier. Daniel Jones and Justin Fields, the only difference is, one has a better offensive coach and has won one playoff game. They're the same guy. They hurt too much. They're inaccurate.

They run but get sacked a lot. It's weird. So my take is the Giants are a fascinating team. They need a receiver, but it's chock full. And I believe they have two second round picks. There can be plenty of receivers. What is your guess? What did you hear about the Giants who, you know, they're stuck with Daniel for a year,

but after that they can wiggle. I think there's going to be a lot of pressure on this organization. that, you know, obviously not the ownership, but the coach and the GM to be competitive this year because this was a team that had back-to-back coaches not last two years each. So Brian Dayball, what just happened, listen, how could you not, what happened two years ago

to be competitive with a roster that was pretty average, but last year was a disaster. So you take a rookie quarterback, Washington is going to be better than they've been. And obviously the Eagles and the Cowboys, a lot is going on, they're in a different universe than the Giants. So you take a quarterback really early.

We'll see on Daniel Jones health, can you compete to go above 500? Because to me, if you have a season where you're winning seven or less games, like John Mara has shown, they will move through coaches. Yes. So I think sometimes these head coaches, maybe he goes, listen, can we just get Daniel Jones back, play better, improve the talent around them? I wonder if you're Brian Dayball, you don't want a rookie quarterback.

you would rather try to hit on three or four guys throughout the draft and have much more talent because you got to play the Eagles and the Cowboys four times. And like we all know, they're rosters that the gap is really wide. And even Washington now is going to be much more a streamlined organization, high-level people, everyone's on the same page, new ownership. It's going to be difficult. So I don't know. I could see the ownership and the organization thinking big picture,

but I could see the head coach wanting position players that can, help him win September 10th. So Jemak noted this earlier. So Caleb Williams, who I think we both like, but there's no perfect player out of college. He doesn't even want to do the physical at the combine. You know, there's the fingernail thing. There's the jumping in the crowd with his mom and crying thing. It doesn't bother me.

It's a different generation. I can get over that fast. I like him. I've met him three or four times. I like him a lot. But there is, you know, you start nitpicking people, John. you're a former NFL scout, Philadelphia Eagles. You're looking for little things.

And the more I read on Caleb, now he's not going to take the physical. Well, everybody does that. What do we make of that? Well, the fingernail thing was, I mean, pretty embarrassing. There's no way around that. But that was two years ago. And then this year, he doesn't do it. Listen, we're guys.

We mature at slower speeds. I watched him talk today about the medical stuff because when I saw the headline on social media, I thought, oh, here we go. You know, it feels very NBA-ish. And then I watched him talk, and he actually was, I thought he explained it pretty well. I'm going to take full physicals with teams

that I know are going to draft me. Once upon a time, Dionne Sanders, I think it was like the New York Giants wanted him and take some cognitive tests. And he said, what pick do you have? Pick nine? I'm not, you're not going to draft me. I actually don't think it's as weird.

I do think it would have been a huge red flag if he says under no circumstances, I'm going to get physical. But the way he said, I have no problem doing it to the Bears, to Washington, maybe to two or three teams that have a chance to have to trade up to get them. But like, why should the Raiders have his medal?

That doesn't bother me as much. I think it's more intriguing about him as a prospect. Talking to scouts that have gone through there, they feel pretty good about him as a person. I think it's more about, can he play in the construct of an offense can the hero ball stuff which he was forced to do at USC can you rein it in a little bit part of Mahomes and that's where he gets compared to a lot like that the raw tools and kind of raining

it all in to become a complete player well he got Andy Reid right he got to go to the Kansas Chiefs that that's not going to happen here it's gonna he's gonna go to the Chicago Bears so I think there's just gonna be a ton of pressure on that organization you and I have talked about this if they start one and four their coach could get fired but it doesn't seem like you know Caleb's open to go in there and yeah it's it's I think he the physical tools are are not debatable right he the arm strength the movement his athleticism but like you said I mean most people are not Andrew luck right

which was the close to his can't miss as I've ever seen in my life this guy like a lot of really good prospects. At quarterback, you're very dependent on so many things. Who's blocking for you? Who's playing wide receiver? Who's calling the plays? How good your defense is? What division you're in?

What's your schedule? So a lot of things are out of his control, and you've hammered this for a long time. The bears aren't exactly team offense when it comes to a franchise. Finally, Justin Fields, a lot of rumors. I do think if you go into a season and you have a quarterback that is first or second best in a division, I'm going to pick you for a playoff possibility.

You can't be the fourth best quarterback in a division. Well, Goff's better than him. Jordan loves better than him. And if Kirk Cousins came back for two to three years, he's better. He'd be the fourth most consistent quarterback in a division. He goes to Atlanta. I think he's more talented than Derek Carr. He's in the class with Baker Mayfield.

We don't know what Bryce Young is. I think Fields in Atlanta, I'd roll the dice if I was Atlanta. Good old line, nice weapons, home, dome, NFC. see still? What do you make of the field rumors? There's been a lot of smoke with Atlanta, and my take is, maybe there's a secret team, but it feels right. Yeah, everyone is

putting him there. I talked to someone close to Kirk Cousins, who I didn't see it, but I guess they put out a video of his rehab, which is going exceptionally well. He bought some product for a lot of money that he brought to his home. If Kirk Cousins is healthy,

to me, Justin Fields is an afterthought if I'm a front office. I'm trying. If I'm Atlanta, obviously if I'm Minnesota, if I'm New England, before I trade any pick of value, which let's face it, it's probably going to be a second or third round pick for Justin Fields, a guy who struggles to throw in the pocket. If I'm Atlanta and I got these weapons, I'd be over Kirk Cousins. Now, the medical is a huge, you know, obviously is a major point that you've got to figure out,

but I don't have to give up a draft pick. I just pay them a couple years, $60 million. The Saints did it last year with Derek Carr. and Kirk Cousins is a better player. So I get Justin Fields, really famous player, name gets your headlines on the internet. I think he's a pretty average player. And ultimately, because there's competition around this time of year, it drives up the price. Right.

So I would, if I'm Atlanta, I'm sniffing around Kirk Cousins before I'm giving a third round pick or two threes or whatever it cost me to get for Justin Fields. Yeah, he did say, I think it's really a good point. Andy Reid goes to this thing every year. If you're a coach, you may want to go to this thing too. Is that reasonable? Tiger Woods is out there practicing in his prime. You probably want to practice. If Brady in the off-season is going to Costa Rica with receivers, you probably want to work with your wide receivers.

This is... the herd line news. So we focused a lot this week, Colin, on people who love everybody. And also a little bit of hate, including some of the guys who are talking draft prospects here. Well, here's another big hater, Charles Barkley, okay? The Lakers and Warriors, we know it. You taught me how to play the hits, right?

Whether it was my radio show, podcast here, play the hits. Lakers and Warriors are the hits. Well, Charles Barkley is sick of it. He wants people to talk about teams besides the Lakers and Warriors. Because I'm so sick of these fools on other networks talking about the Lakers and the Warriors We don't brag about any other playing teams, do we? I understand Steph is great

And LeBron is great Ain't nobody worried about the Lakers and the Warriors in the West. The Lakers and the Warriors, they own a little spell. They're doing well. LeBron was amazing last night. But they're not going to beat those teams up top. So stop juicing them up.

I disagree. He's totally wrong, as usual. Well, first of all, we talk about Denver a lot on this show, and we talk about the Celtics a lot, because I think they're the two best teams in the league. I absolutely believe nobody in the East would beat the Lakers or the Warriors

in a seven-game series. Phillies toast. Nicks don't have enough offense. Milwaukee's declining. I mean, I think Boston, Denver best team, Boston second, I think the Warriors and the Lakers are absolutely in Phoenix, and okay, see,

Minnesota, I don't, we'll just see. But I disagree. We, We talk Celtics nuggets a ton on this show. Okay, so remember last year, the Memphis Grizzlies were the second seed. And Barclay said in the same crap last year, he talked about Memphis, talk about John Marin. No, thanks. We didn't buy anything.

And guess what happened? Lakers smoked them. And I know there were some injuries, whatever. And then there was the Sacramento Kings, who were a nice story. I tried to talk about them. I wouldn't light the beam. You shut me down, and they end up losing great seven-game series. But, Barkley, these teams have to learn how to win before we talk about them.

I mean, let's be real. OKC's like third, best player could walk in this studio. I might not know who they are, and I watch a lot of NBA. But they're just kind of anonymous. No, I watch a lot of NBA, especially two weeks ago going forward, and I don't trust O KSTI in the playoffs. They'll win a series.

I don't even know that for sure. Sam Presti's great. SDA is remarkable. Sons or OKC, who you take in a series. Don't tell me what's happening in regular season. I would take the Sons over OKC. Okay. Golden State.

Okay. Lakers or OKC. Lakers. So, I'm sorry, We have a history in the NBA. Young teams that have never won anything play their arsoff in the regular season. Chicago Bulls' Derek Rose team. Those guys played so hard every night.

And then they faced LeBron. And it's like, LeBron's like, okay, we'll play now. I'll never forget. I think they won game one, right? The Rose and the Bulls. And then LeBron said, I'm guarding Derek Rose of the fourth, and it was game over. And they won't full state. He was MVP of the league.

Totally shut him down. And we've been doing this our whole life. The only time a young team flourished that I can remember in the, playoffs was the bubble Miami team and the explanation was the old veteran players who were married with kids missed their families and hated it whereas the young guys are all single they're like hey we're playing video games and hoops that was a rare instance where a young team like outplayed veteran teams take the bubble out old teams yeah always by the way last year Jimmy Butler bam spolstra like you're talking about guys with a lot of

playoff experience. You remember that Lakers team with Kobe and Shaq? Everybody loved them, love them. They had some playoff struggles. Remember the airballs by Kobe against Utah? Like, it happens. OkC is the one whereward. Hardin, Russ, and Durant went to the finals against the Healds. Remember they were like a young

team. And then the genius GM, Sam Presti had to trade James Hardin after that. Well, he's done a very good job. The media loves it. Well, he can't make one move that's not stellar? They go to the finals and he trades James Harden because he didn't think

they could afford him. It was one of the dumbest moves in the end. Oh boy. He is literally one of the smartest guys in the league. And he made a colossal mistake. How did Westbrook and Hardin work in Houston? Maybe he saw that at practice. I can't believe you're doing this to me now.

Okay, let's move on to the NFL. Doing it to you? What facts? I'm doing facts to Jason. Patriots head coach, Gerard Mayo made waves when he said the team was going to burn some cash in free agency. now that the cap has gone up. He started to walk that back just a little bit, Colin.

I kind of misspoke when I said burn some cash, but I was excited when you see those numbers. You don't have to spend all of it in one year. This is going to be a process. I don't want people to think, you got 60-70 mill. So let's get this guy, that guy. It may work for a couple games or a season, but it won't work long term. I am a believer in the Chris Ballard of the Colts.

His view, I like what he does. He lets everybody go crazy for about four days, and then he walks in, and then he gets a guy that's like the fourth best receiver and the third best edge rusher. I see these guys spending all this money in the first two, three days. Ballard's always been, that's how I would do free agency. I would like, I need an outside linebacker. Like, you're the Rams, let's say, and you've got really, you got a veteran Aaron Donald, than a couple of excellent young guys.

I think they're going to spend money on a corner or an outside linebacker, maybe both, but probably one. I don't need the best outside linebacker. I don't need the best edge rusher because I have very good young pieces accelerating and growing. But if I can get the third or fourth best edge rusher and get me nine sacks instead of 14,

I save money as my young players around the nine sack guy improve. I just think, and the other thing is when you pay a free agent, like the top free agent corner, you're getting entitlement and an ego. You bring in the third or fourth best wide receiver free agent. He's a little hungrier. He didn't go.

He got shut the, he didn't get the big money. He didn't get the bag. He's got something to prove. It almost sounds like you're into the money ball approach, which kind of works. No, I just think Ballard is, and he's dealing with an owner who can be impulsive and people have been on. It's like, listen, man, go look at the history of getting the top blank in free agency. It just doesn't work very often. Final story is a bummer.

Kenny Pickett, rough second season in Pittsburgh. I was on the Kenny Pickett. I was driving the bandwagon before the season. It crashed early. It was ugly. The organization has been open about bringing in competition for him this year, but say they still believe in their 2012 first round pick. Steelers GM spoke at the Combine about Pickett,

saying the team has full faith in him and is excited about the new offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith, and the impact he will have. I don't know, Colin. Pickett had one good year at Pitt. Remember, as like a super senior, had like 40 touchdown or whatever? I've always told you that a Super Bowl winning general manager, so there's a few of them here.

I talked to him about Pickett. And then a near Super Bowl winner, I talked to two GMs. And the feeling was they understood why Pittsburgh needed a quarterback. and he's a local kid, but they viewed him as a late, second, early third round pick. And a lower-end franchise guy. So that would be fine if you didn't have Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Deshawn Watson, Mahomes, Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, Trevor Lawrence, C.J. Stroud. In the AFC, not good enough. So I'm trying to look it up here.

Pick it 2020 first round pick. Isn't that the draft Rock Pro 301-7th dead last? I'm just curious what you think. Oh, I think Purdy's better. Okay, well, obviously. But if Purdy had gone to Pittsburgh, could he thrive? Not the way he's thriving in Sanfram, but could he thrive? Um, I don't, not nearly close.

First of all, you've got a lot of sort of impulsive, a juvenile wide receiver stuff over there. But they're talented. Well, but he'd have to, like, that's fine if you're Brady. Settle down. If you're a rookie, I have to deal with that. Remember when the Cowboys got rid of Des Bryant? because they thought Dax's maturity could run the team, and Desil was getting in the way of that.

So if he goes to Pittsburgh, they can't get their own line right. Well, they can't get their offensive coordinator. Nobody was succeeding with that. So I don't think he would be fine in Pittsburgh. He would not be on this show. We would not be talking about Brock Purdy. It's fair. Shanahan, great weapons, winning culture.

You want to play that card. I think they had drafted Jordan Love. I'll be honest with you. If the Steelers had drafted Jordan Love, then obviously he didn't go. No, again, again. Jordan Love was not ready. Yeah, and he wouldn't be working with this. Pitchfurt has shown no ability under Tomlin.

I mean, Big Ben was just freaking talented. Where are they developing less talented people into great players at quarterback? They're not doing that. They have an archaic offense coming. Now, maybe with the new offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith, it'll look good, but, geez, you watched the Falcons last year. A lot of question and play calling in the red zone.

Run, run, run. Underused Bijon Robinson. A lot of halfback. on first down, like, that stuff doesn't work anymore. I'm worried about Pittsburgh. I like the organization. I like Tomlin. I don't think they're finishing over 500 this year.

I think this is the year. It ends. Tomlin walks away, and they head towards shit. Just look at the quality of coaching and quarterbacks in the AFC. It's insane. It's never been better. Ever. It's never been close to this good.

16 teams in the AFC. Pittsburgh's bottom six. Maybe bottom four. I don't know. Starters? I'm just saying The quality of coaching Even people that are on the hot seat

Sean McDermott Sean's a very solid coach He got to the playoffs with Tyrod Taylor Sean McDermott knows what he's doing I think he's a little A little like most defensive coaches A little off on offense But he's a grown-up

Indianapolis feels better about their quarterback room right now Than Pittsburgh does And it's not close Not even close The only teams that are down there with the Steelers Who? Patriots Who? There I'm anybody I don't know what's going on with the Titans.

Here we go. Every Friday, last segment, tomorrow's headlines today. Let's predict. Justin Fields. What's the headline for him? It's weird. If you listen closely to Middilkoff, and it sounds like he's kind of plugged in on some teams. This Atlanta stuff is phasing out. I think there's a sleeper. The headline will be. Justin do it. Fields headed to Pacific Northwest. Colin, I'm putting together some breadcrums. I know you like them. So they hired a fellow by the name of Ryan Grubb is the O.C. He was at Washington. seems like he knows Michael Penix well.

Penix is supposedly on the radar. You look at their new head coach, McDonald. They had a running quarterback with Lamar Jackson in Baltimore. And he knows McCarthy, who's scrambling. They will need a mobile quarterback. Gino's okay. But if you look at his game log, he clearly regressed from two years ago. When he was good, he was a pro bowler.

Colin, Justin Fields, to me, makes sense. I think they take fields. I would not be shocked if they also drafted Pennix. And that quarterback room, Drew Locke, he was like a piece. Carol favorite, it's over. That ship has sailed. And I think Gino Smith is on his way out. Keep an eye on Justin Fields and Seattle. Tomorrow's headlines today. What's the headline for Russell Wilson? So a lot of people have Fields ticketed for Atlanta. I think they got other ideas. The headline

will be in Russ we trust. Dirty Birds acquire squeaky clean quarterback. Listen, I think this is the grown-up that Atlanta needs. Rahim Morris, listen, man, he's not going to want a young guy to come in and mess around and maybe there's upside. You know what you're getting with Russell Wilson. He's a professional. He's a grown up. He comes in, established veteran. Out to prove something.

His last two stops. The endings have been ugly. I think Russ makes total sense in Atlanta. I think he becomes like kind of a big name there in the city, a face of the franchise, which they've lacked sorely since Matt Ryan left. Interesting. I like that. Tomorrow's headlines today.

Let's project what the headline will be for Baker Mayfield. Yeah, not that much smoke around him because he had such a good season in Tampa. Everybody loves him. The headline will be Bay Flowers bring May showers. Baker stays with bucks. I think this just makes sense, right? Like, he thrived there. They like him.

The fans like him. Everybody likes him. I think you even said it was kind of a cultural fit with like the city of Tampa and Baker Mayfield. Now, listen, it probably ain't going to go with swimmingly, right? The offensive coordinator leaves. It sounds like Mike Evans is not going to be returning, although, you know, with salary cap going up, maybe they keep him, but Evans is going to have a lot of suitors.

And maybe like Super Bowl contenders versus a playoff team. So I don't think Baker's going to be as great next year, but I think he's found some stability. And this is a great, what is this, his second, third, fourth act? You know, it didn't work out the last two. This one should work. Yeah, I think he's a perfect fit.

Tomorrow's, you know, unlikely Netflix quarterback series star, Kirk Cousins, who we both like getting old injury. What say you? He's the toughest one to read because it feels like the market is ro- bust. I think there's only one team. The headline will be Kirkland. Vikings love the cousin sample size. You know, I'm a big Costco guy. I had to crowbar that in there. I think this just makes sense all around. You heard Middilkoff talk about it. The Vikings like him. I think they bring him back on like a one to two-year deal. And you just don't want to lose him. He seems like he wants to be there. He's going to Twins games. He's like a fixture in the community.

And I think they could be pretty good. Did you see they cut Madison or the running back? Remember, they got rid of Dauvin Cook. Now they're getting on, reading from Madison. They're starting to free up some cap room. My guess is they're freeing up room to pay Kirk Couss. There's an old saying, Minnesota nice. People are nice. Kirk Cousins is a good cultural fit.

Like I think Baker and Tampa feels like a little loose, a little pirate ship feel to Baker. Minnesota nice. That's cool. I like that. People are nice there. Tomorrow's headlines today, finally. I'm interested here.

Pretty good running back in New York City. Saquan Barkley has suitors, maybe. Does he? I don't know. It's weird. The running back market is so depressed. I almost feel like there's value. The headline will be. Lightning strikes twice. L.A. recharges with Sequin. Listen, Harbaugh's made it known. He wants to be a smash-mouth team. He does. Sequin. Listen, I still think there's a lot of value. You could squeeze a lot more out of Seekwan. He's still a very good player.

Yeah, but I know the injuries have stunk and the Giants have kind of regressed a little bit. But man, this would be a big hit for the New York Giants. Did Daniel Jones all by himself back there? We know he did this with Andrew Luck at Stanford. He did this with Kaepernick, Alex Smith. Jim wants to create. He did this with J.J. McCarthy at Michigan. He does not want his quarterback, regardless of who he is throwing 42 times a game.

So like you said, they will probably draft a running back. There's a couple from Michigan who are going to be drafted. And Sequin Barkley and Free Agency. He's not a 25 carry-a-game guy. No. You don't run into the ground. You don't need those guys. No.

But, you know, 10, 15 touches in a Ladani and Tomlinson roll with the Jets. Do you remember LT at the end? He was so valuable. Catching passes, running, veteran leadership. I think this works. And Sequan's out to prove a lot because the Giants kind of jerked him around last year. I don't think he liked that. And by the way, Harbaugh is going to do something contrary, and so nobody wants to pay a running back.
