Carson Palmer always understood what it was like to have to deal with a bit of dysfunction, not always the world's greatest support. And as we've seen Carson, these young quarterbacks, Bo Nicks gets Sean Payton. That, to me, is an advantage.

Jaden Daniels gets Cliff Kingsbury. I think Cliff's a very sharp guy. He's had mobile. I think that's an advantage. I watch Caleb and I think, man, this is a rough sled, right? You sat behind John Kittner, if I recall, the first year, Central Washington. I remember that. Do you think you could make an argument?

They probably should have sat him maybe to Thanksgiving, Caleb, or is he so talented, which you were, just put him out there? No, I think the best thing for Caleb to do is play. I mean, he needs the experience. He needs these reps. And, you know, unfortunately, to be a good quarterback, you really need to go through some adversity. You need to come in and have struggles to really appreciate the peaks that you get to get to.

You've got to understand those valleys and those lows. And they'll make him a better quarterback. They'll make him work harder. They'll make him won it more. A lot of times when you see young guys come in the league and have a ton of success, they have fizzled out in the past. I think Caleb coming into this situation where he's really got to work at it

and he really has to play his absolute best football in order for them to win a game. I think that's a good situation for him to build his foundation of the future and the Bears' future on right now. You know, there is, as you well know, there is a gap between the best coaches and solid coaches.

Kevin O'Connell has literally coached the reckless out of Sam Darnold, who I think we both probably liked a lot as a Trojan. But he was a wreck, he was like he could have been, you know, he had some Carson Wentz in him that you saw the talent, but a lot of mistakes. And by the way, Matt Stafford's got some of that. Andrew Luckett, they're both great.

What do you think Kevin O'Connell is doing? Sam's clearly seeing things better. The reckless is gone. What is that? Well, I think as great as O'Connell's been for him, I think you need to give a little bit of love to Shanahan and his experience being in San Francisco and being in that culture and that situation. You know, I think that all, you know, this maturation of Sam started when he was in San Francisco and in that room wanting, chomping at the bit, waiting for his opportunity. Now he's finally got it. There were some instances last, last season where Brock Purdy was injured.

He was coming off the elbow. He had a concussion, and he was so close to getting on the field. And now he finally had to wait for so long to be in the right environment, have the right coach, have the right players around him. And you're seeing Sam Floresh currently. You know, Tony Gonzalez, the great tight end, once told me that he just didn't have the personality early in his career to confront coaches and confront stuff. It wasn't his personality.

And Tony always felt it could have cost him 500. matches. Joe Burrow had a moment this past week. They're 0 and 3. There's video of Joe. Basically, we're going to have a meeting after the game with his coach and his defensive coordinator. He's confronting stuff, which I am for. And I said, I think you and Joe Burrow are great examples of profound elite talents, but that it proves Brady had from Ernie Adams to Belichick, Mahalman. Andy Reid to the GM, a great quarterback has a ceiling. And I never felt you, and sometimes with Burrell, I don't feel they have it. When you were frustrated, let's say maybe you didn't have things furnished in Cincinnati. Would you have gone to a coach and called him out? Would you have said, we needed to sit down and talk?

Were you willing to do that? I was. They just didn't want to hear or didn't want to listen to me. You know, fortunately, it sounds like Joe, you know, he's brash. He's willing to get in those tussles. He's willing to give opinions. And, you know, I think back to the Super Bowl year. And they lost that Super Bowl to the Rams because they couldn't protect him.

And they needed to upgrade that offensive line. And they had his contract looming. And I was really antsy sitting that offseason watching. And what are they going to do? Are they just happy with going to the Super Bowl? Are they all in? And that was awesome. They went out and saying, Lyle Collins, they revamped that offensive line.

They brought in four new guys, I believe, to try to protect him. And that was kind of an opportunity for Joe to look around and go, all right, I have a contract that's looming. I'm glad to see they're willing to invest in me and protecting me. Now, a couple of years down the line, now they've got two receivers that both want and deserve new contracts. And this can be really interesting. I think over the next 24 months to watch what happened. with T. Higgins and Jamar because that's going to be really weighing heavily on Joe. So I was, I don't want to say a skeptic, but I watched Brock Purdy in college, a little small.

It goes to the NFL, and I'm like, I mean, good, Jennings and Debo and Iyuk and Kittle and I'm Shanahan, and I'm thinking, you know, just don't crash the Mercedes into the driveway. Like, this is just an easy lift. But, you know, I watched him this past weekend without all his guys. and he made Joanne Jennings look like Justin Jefferson and I was just like, I guess he's it and I didn't see it. You were a number one pick. Are you surprised that he fooled that many people?

Even the Niners passed on him six times. You know, Kurt Warner was undrafted. Romo was undrafted. You were obvious. You know, you watch Josh Allen. Okay. You know, there's certain guys like Peyton Manning, you. But when he drops to the seventh,

why do you think he did when he's this good as a pro? Well, I think what you're getting at is what happens when they have to give him 20% of the salary cap in a couple years. You lose maybe the Christian McCaffrey and Kittles combination. There's going to be some give and take when they have to pay him because at that point, you maybe don't have IUC and Fred Warner on that roster because you've got to give that chunk of salary to him. But I think you saw it a little bit in Cleveland last year why he was not drag out.

in the first couple rounds. When he went into an inclement weather situation, and the ball was wet, and there's a little bit of wind, and that wind comes off of Lake Erie in Cleveland, and it just swirls in that stadium, and the ball doesn't quite come off at the same velocity, and it's not hitting your target.

And that team and Brock really struggled in that game. I think that's just a little microcosm of why you saw him get drafted late. When you combine losing those type of players and those caliber are really a pro-beckrogram, roster that they have in San Francisco. And you see him doing some amazing things with his feet, but you also see him getting beat up. He got a little banged up this last week. He's not a big physical guy that can take the pounding that a Josh Allen can take.

But I think you saw a little bit of that in Cleveland last year, and I'm waiting to watch, you know, San Francisco, they play in the NFC West. They don't play in a lot of bad weather situations until they head to the East Coast. and I think that's where you're going to see him struggle a little bit. Once that wind picks up, that ball gets wet, they start playing in a snow environment. He's really going to need Debo healthy. He's going to need McAfrey healthy because he's shown that when he gets in those environments, he struggles a bit. Yeah, one final question.

Go back to what you watched, you know, you played against in college, your NFL career and what you've watched. Mahomes has the trophy room. I'm not sure I've ever seen anything, and I loved Elway. I've never quite seen anything like Josh Allen, and he may be imperfect. But there are times I watch him, and to be a pro athlete, you're obviously the best in your high school, generally the best in your county. You're often the best in your state. So he is making professional athletes. There are times he looks like he's a different level than Jordan did this.

when you look at somebody that you had the gifts, when you look at Josh Allen, 6,6, 250, runs, arm, have you ever seen anybody that just from a gift standpoint like that? Did you play against somebody? Just see anybody? Not that I can think of. I mean, his combination of running ability and ability to throw the ball in the pocket, there's been a lot of quarterbacks that have been able to get outside the pocket

and make place their legs and run through tackles and have, you know, consistent, you know, 50, 80, 100-yard rushing games. But to be able to throw the ball accurately in the pocket and do that, that's a rare combination. I mean, Mahomes, you mentioned Mahomes. Mahomes, Mahomes does the same thing, not as physical when he runs with the football, but he can beat you with his legs outside the pocket. We've seen him do it in the playoffs. We've seen him do it in the regular season. And inside the pocket, those two guys are playing just at a different level than everybody else around them. That's why there's such a stark difference in the quarterback play between

Kansas City and Buffalo and really everybody else in the league right now. By the way, Michael Penix is not playing. I'm okay with it. I like Kirk Cousins. When you were sitting behind Ketna, you're a better player. You're bigger, stronger, yeah. Any bitterness? Like, how did you handle that whole thing? How did it feel to you? Because you weren't talking about it. No, I mean, I think Pennix on draft day knew the situation as soon as he picked up the phone from Atlanta, what he was going into. He knew Kirk had just signed a big deal there. So, you know, he wasn't going into a situation and then, you know, they slide the route, the rug out from underneath you and tell you, oh, by the way, we're signing a perennial pro bowler. So I think going into that situation, going to that staff, that ownership group, the success that Atlanta's had, I think he was fired up about it.

I mean, there's not a better locker room leader and just all around teammate than Kirk Cousins. Everywhere Kirk spent, everybody loves him. That is unanimous. You go in any locker room that Kurt's been in. Guys love him. So, you know, he's not there to coach. He's not there to bring this young guy along, but this young guy is there to watch this old guy do it

and watch him train and watch him watch film and watch him lead team meetings, watch and break the hub. You know, there's so much he can absorb, so much he can learn, being in a new system, being in a new offense. Well, Kirk's also in that same situation. This is a new offense.

So he's getting to really watch Kurt in real time figure this out, figure out new receivers, new tight ends, new offensive line calls, the line of scrimmage. And this is a fabulous situation. I know Pinnix wants to play, and he probably has the ability to be the starter in a number of teams tonight. But when you look at the flip side of it and you look at what this can do for his career and how this sets him up, he's learning how to be a pro from one of the best.

You could argue they should have beat the Chiefs. But despite the slow start, Matt Ryan was asked on Twitter how he feels about Atlanta so far and said, I'm bullish on the Falcons. I think they are facing the gauntlet of the schedule early in the season. I believe the offense OC are only going to get better as the year goes on. No reason to panic. NFC South is wide open. I totally agree with this.

You sure about that? No, I like it. What was that glib response? I don't know, man. What? Just say it. So all of a sudden, Kirk Cousers is going to be fine with this offensive line falling apart? It is. They're dinged up.

I mean, a lot of people around the league are dinged up. 49ers are. They're one and two. Now, an interesting game this week that we didn't think much before the season started, but the Saints play the Falcons. They do. So it kind of feels like... Well, the Saints offensive line is beat up too from that Eagles game.

Yeah. And the Falcons are... The winner of this game, I mean, this is a real... They're both dinged up. Nobody's got a physical advantage. Who do you like? This is probably a stay away for me, sorry. It's just, it feels like the Spider-Man mean, these are the two same teams.

Like, what's going on here? I do want to ask, how the heck, so the Falcons got Kyle Pitts in the top 10 in the draft? He has been a huge disappointment. He has one 50-yard catch. They're throwing to Ray Ray McLeod. And is it, is it Mooney the other guy? Yeah, this is my interpretation.

He's not a real physical player. And so he doesn't block. And if you don't block NFL coaches, they hold it against you. Yeah. I mean, that's how a George Kittle goes in the fifth round, And in camp, you're like, yeah, he could block. Tony Gonzalez block. Shannon Sharp block.

The great Antonio Gates. You've got to make an effort. Kyle Pitts is sort of a slender. He'd almost be like a slower receiver on the outside, but they have Drake London. That's my interpretation. He's just kind of a finesse player. It's just weird. There's no rhyme or reason to the offense.

And next thing you look up and like, Ray Ray MacLeod has five targets and Kyle Pitts has one. And you're like, is that the game plan? And it's not really working. I mean, they couldn't do anything against Pittsburgh. No, you've... I just don't get what their offensive. Like, what is their offensive philosophy? What do they want to be?

A fair question. I think they have a very good running. I think they should be like Detroit, an immobile quarterback, run first, throw on play action. I think they're a poor man's Detroit Lions. X-Len O line, quarterback that doesn't move but accurate,

nice pieces on the outside. They don't have Amaraa and they don't have Leporta. Pitts is not Leporta. He's awesome. They're banging. But you're right. They don't. But I like your strategy.

That's what they should be. But then I watch them and it feels like there's a disconnect. I don't know. We'll see. I don't have a lean on this game at all. It's just too many injuries, you know? Next up, Colin. Ooh, Raiders.

Okay, this is fun. Andy Dalton smoked the Raiders in Vegas. Afterward, Antonio Pierce called out some of his players for business decisions. A lot of people thought of him. It was Devante Adams. Remember, he threw up his hands frustrated well. Devante Adams has shined in. Here's what he has to say.

I think at the end of the day, you look at the drives that we had at the end of that game, and we didn't really have much to play for other than the pride. And there was some guys out there that, you know, they were kind of just trying to see it another day. Multiple times throughout the three hours we were out there where people were maybe not, you know, putting that extra hit on somebody, not, you know, putting that extra block or not straight a little bit more just so that we can have it looked away from one or two on tape. That's fair. I mean, Antonio Pierce was a physical player,

and he saw some of his guys not putting their shoulder into it. Happens. One of our producers had a good question. This is a Brown's Raiders matchup this weekend. Which quarterback situation do you prefer? Deshawn Watson in Cleveland? Minchu, because I can get out of his contract. Minshu and Aid and O'Connell with the Raiders.

I would take the Raiders quarterback situation over the Browns in a heartbeat. Minshu is... Somebody said this. I forget who it was. I apologize for not giving you credit. Minshu as a football player is like Dishon Watson without like the stardom. You know, there's a sense that Dishon's a star. If you look at them play, they're both mobile.

They're both decent from the pocket, not great. Deshawn's obviously got personal issues. But the difference is, Minshu is always viewed one way, and Deshaun is viewed as a star. If you take out how they're viewed and you put them out there and you had one drive to win the game, who would you take? I think it's much closer than you think. Maybe right now. One is viewed as a...

Look at how he's paid. One is viewed as a star. He was a star. He was not. By the way, Minshu was seven and six as a starter last year in Indy. Yeah, I know. Minshu is just one of those guys that... I'm not saying it's unfair, but sometimes...

people are viewed in lots of industries as a star, but the production you're like... They're not. Everybody says they're a star, but they're not. So, I don't know. I view Watson is almost like a Tesla stock. You buy it. You're like, I got Tesla stock, and it continues to fall and fall. You don't want to sell because it's Tesla. It's a cool stock. But it keeps falling and falling. And Watson's stock. Colin, is this rock bottom? Can it get worse? He's arguably the worst quarterback in the league through three weeks. That's how bad he's been. Can it get worse? I'll ask you right now. minute 50

it's bad we'll wrap up with the WNBA story, Colin, because Caitlin Clark, they made, she made her playoff debut Sunday, they got blasted, but they play again tonight. But this is the real story. Colin, are you ready for this? Caitlin Clark's game on Sunday against the Connecticut Sun in the middle of the NFL slate drew 1.84 million viewers. The highest rated WNBA playoff game since 2000.

Okay? I asked the staff, I'm like, oh, how did the other games do? They must be, everybody's talking about WNBA ratings are up. $460,000 for Storm Aces. $410,000 for Liberty Dream. She's basically four and a half times the rating surge. She's going up against the NFL. And Drew 1.84. So, Colin.

And by the way, they put her games up against the NFL. They didn't get her in the shooting contest. Not good enough for the Olympic team. She's one of the seven best players in the league now. WMBA fans are not going to like this. But are we going to see some ref interaction here. We need to keep the Caitlin Clark train going. Caitlin Clark better win tonight.

Honestly, we've never talked WNBA on the show ever, right? Before Caitlin Clark? I'll be honest with you. If you would have asked me before this season, seven players, I could give you about four. Maybe. It's just not on our radar, right? It doesn't do numbers. Now, Caitlin Clark's doing numbers.

But if she's out, is this the last time we talked WNBA until next season? Just being real and honest. And let's be real. There's a lot of people in the media that, you know, they protect the WNBA. The WNBA. The WNBA was not prepared for this. I said it's like Pearl, it was like, you know, it's a hot band and Ticketmaster can't get the tickets right. They're not ready for it. You're like, they're not prepared for Taylor Swift's era tour. Like, you've seen that before. Like ticket brokers are like, we just, we just can't handle. Stores do this. They get a new iPhone and they can't handle it. They don't have, the league was not prepared for this. And they didn't act very swiftly. I said when the All-Star game came around, I said, A, She should be in the All-Star game, too. You pay her whatever it costs to get her in the three-point shooting contest. I don't care what it is.

You go to your top sponsor. You go to your bank. You go to the NBA. You pay her $5 million. Private Gold Stream there and back. You get her in that shooting contest. You just do it. I don't care what it costs.

She said she was tired. I was tired this morning. I had some neuro gum, and I did the show. Yeah, Clark in Game won four of 17 shooting. First career playoff game. Come on. It's irrelevant. I just hope they win tonight.

Now, Jaden Daniels inherits Cliff Kingsbury, so he hadn't gotten very... He's kept it out of the rough. Bow Nicks, although limited, I think somewhat limited as a big arm guy, is... I... I can just tell you that Sean

Peyton thinks this is like step two of 10 that he's going to keep building. Well, just as a heads up, sometimes it's one step forward, two steps back. And now he goes up against the New York Jets on the road, back-to-back road games. I know Denver staying east. It's a tough spot for the young quarterback against solid defense. Okay, so we showed video earlier. I like that our staff found the Joe Burrow video. So if we can run that again.

So Joe Burrow did not go to the locker room. took the helmet off and there's video of him after that game, I don't know if confronting, but having a very serious conversation with a coach and the defensive coordinator. And I asked Carson Palmer about 15, 20 minutes ago, about that. Would you have done that? What do you make of that?

Fortunately, it sounds like Joe, you know, he's brash. He's willing to get in those tussles. He's willing to give opinions. and, you know, I think back to the Super Bowl year, and they lost that Super Bowl to the Rams because they couldn't protect him, and they needed to upgrade that offensive line, and they had his contract looming, and I was really antsy sitting that off-season watching.

They brought in four new guys, I believe, to try to protect him, and that was kind of an opportunity for Joe to look around and go, all right, I have a contract that's looming. I'm glad to see they're willing to invest in me and protecting me, And it's going to be really interesting. I think over the next 24 months to watch what happens with T. Higgins and Jamar because that's going to be really weighing heavily on Joe. Yeah, San Francisco was noisy in the offseason with a holdout. Dallas was noisy in the off season.

C.D. wanted his money. Cincinnati was noisy. Three holdout teams all struggling. And Mike Tomlin, with his quarterback issue, a greater. position. Mike's like, we'll see what happens. I'm not going to worry about it. I'm not going to tell you who quarterback one is. That's the value of the Steelers and the Packers. They just don't fire coaches. I mean, they had to eventually let go of Mike McCarthy. Aaron won that. But, you know, Pittsburgh, they empower the coach and the Miami Heat empower the coach and the Spurs empower the coach.

You'll have dips, especially in the NBA if you have a dunk and retire. But San Antonio now is Wemby and Popovich is going to have a nice runway for about six years. You mentioned Pittsburgh undefeated. So you see a little symmetry between Minnesota and Pittsburgh? What's their quarterback situation? They got guys kind of sort of off the scrap heap on the cheap. You know what you can do when you have a cheap quarterback? Build a hell of a roster.

Pittsburgh has a damn good defensive roster. We'll see how long this lasts. But it is interesting that two, three and O teams both don't have franchise quarterbacks that are making all the money. Think about this with Tomlin. Laby and Bell got chirpy out. A. B. Chirpy out. Chase Claypole, Cherpy traded him.

That just, this is not the NBA and nobody proves it more than the Pittsburgh Steelers. They're back in their coach. I mean, listen, Pat Riley chose spolster over LeBron. Okay. And LeBron was still, he was darn close to his prime. No, he was, yeah, yeah, yeah. It just doesn't happen very often. in pro sports.

You're just like, we're going to go with a coach. But it does pay off. The heat and the spurs between the two have eight titles. And as great as the Celtics franchise is, they have won in how many years? If you want to drag DAC into it, remember. Two now.

Celtics have two now. We were pretty set fast. You don't pay DAC 60 mil. Cowboys did. And their roster looks limited. They're hurtling toward disaster. This could unravel quickly. And then you're stuck with a $60 million quarterback.

How attractive is the Dallas coaching job? Well, you can't build that a roster? I'll tell you a job that I think's actually attractive. I think Pittsburgh has... I've said this before. I think Pittsburgh has a top 5-6 roster. Well, wait, wait. The job's not open.

No, no, I'm saying. No, no, I'm not saying for the head coach. A quarterback, every year we have a free agent quarterback. Every single year we have one. That Pittsburgh thing, I mean, they can get rid of both quarterbacks. They've got a star receiver. They have invested draft capital in the O line. I like their backs.

Best Pass Rush. maybe in the sport. Great culture. Don't fire coaches. Arthur Smith is a more than capable offensive coordinator. It's a very interesting. We're talking about Russell and Justin.

Maybe you keep them. But if I was a free agent quarterback, I think Russell saw what is obvious. No chaos. Strong coach. I think Pittsburgh, I mean, I didn't think they'd be good this year, but the roster,
